Kosovo Travel Blog_Things To Do In Peja Kosovo

So you’re thinking of visiting Kosovo or perhaps are planning a more extensive adventure around the Balkans ? Like many who have fallen for the charms of Europe’s newest country, I genuinely believe Kosovo is one of the continent’s most underrated destinations.

Now increasingly tourist-friendly and safe to visit, the challenges of visiting a country that only declared its independence in 2008 are far overwhelmed by the many great reasons to add it to your Europe bucket list .

Although the locals’ unbridled welcome left the biggest impression on me following my short trip to Kosovo, the integration of unexpected cultural gems with stunning nature left me wondering why Kosovo isn’t more popular.

These are why my stop in Peja became a firm favorite during my months of solo backpacking the Balkans. ( Side note: yes, this is a safe region for solo travelers to visit too!)

Skip Ahead To My Advice Here!

About Peja Kosovo

One Month In The Balkans - Inside view of the Patriachte of Pec Monastery in the Dukagini valley close to Pec in Kosovo

Peja is also known by its Albanian name Pejë or Serbian name ‘Peć,’ which means ‘cave,’ presumably after the nearby canyon or caves, which you can still visit today.

Pec Kosovo is a small city with less than 50000 inhabitants and is part of Kosovo’s greater Peć district, close to the borders of both Montenegro and Albania .

All cities are within 2 hours of each other and accessible by regular and straightforward bus routes. The most well-known are the quirky capital Pristina and the cultural hub of Prizren. Peja is one of Kosovo’s ‘three Ps,’ often suggested as a recommended route through Kosovo.

I bought my 4 euro bus tickets upon arriving at the station and was able to stow my backpack below, making Kosovo a pretty peaceful country to travel around. Alternatively, you can rent a car , popular with many passing through on a Balkans road trip.

Although there isn’t much to do in Peja compared to its larger European counterparts on the surface, it has some incredibly specific historical sites of its own, and the surrounding scenery is not to be missed. Peja is the perfect gateway for hiking the formidable Accursed Mountains or visiting the nearby Rugova Canyon. The mountain ranges here are breathtaking, and the waterfalls are amongst the least visited in Europe. Except for the locals, of course, who will surely give you some great tips during your stay.

Historically, Peja city was a major religious center in medieval Serbia and was made the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church back in the 14th – 18th centuries. Although delightful monasteries from this period remain in the area, more than 80% of people’s homes were damaged during the tragic Kosovo War in 1999.

Although this is no reason not to visit, the city is visibly less modern than others in Europe; the tourism industry here is noted for its friendly guides. Extremely hospitable locals front the comfortable accommodations.

Still not convinced? My hostel dorm was only 2 euros a night (yep, you heard that right), and a meal was never more than 4 euros, although vegetarian options aside from pasta and pizza are pretty limited.

Brands We Use And Trust

Outdoors activities in peja.

If you plan to visit Peja, the chances are you’re keen to use it as a base to visit the nearby natural landscapes . Here are some of the region’s best-known hikes and outdoor activities, all easily accessible from Peja.

Lake Liqenat (Half Day Hike)

mendi tours peje

This is the most leisurely hike to access for those traveling through Kosovo on public transport and, although strenuous, is suitable for less advanced hikers.  The only bus to the Lake Liqenat hike is at 7 am from Peja Bus Station (get off at Kuqishtë, on the bus heading towards Boge). The bus back is at 3 pm, or you could arrange a cheap taxi. Pin Kuqishtë to your google maps, so you know where to get off. It is also worth pinning ‘Te Liqini’ to your map, which is a restaurant. The hike starts from behind this restaurant.

This hike has incredible views over the cool blue Lake Liqenat, straddling Kosovo and Montenegro’s border. You could technically cross the border here just by swimming across the lake! In total, you will see two glacial lakes on this hike alongside the magnificent peaks of the Accursed Mountain range.

Hasan Peak (Half Day Hike)

This half-day hike is a little taxing, going up to 1900 meters altitude, but doable for anyone of reasonably good health and worth it for the scenery. With guides, it’s also possible to take in the snowy peaks during the winter, or else you can enjoy the stretching views of flora and fauna here in the spring .

Balkan Natural Adventure has many hiking options available and appears committed to providing a rewarding experience for its guests, at least if their 5-star reviews are anything to go by. The hikes become increasingly difficult to access if you don’t have a car; however, you could arrange a driver or use this top-rated tour company. The only downside is that they may be a little pricey for budget travelers , starting at a hefty 120 euros. You’d be better off doing the Lake Liqenat hike if you choose to travel on your own and a budget .

Hajla Peak (7-8 Hour Hike)

Hiking up to 2400 meters with views over Kosovo and neighboring Montenegro  is the best option for adventurous hikers, especially since you can make it an overnight stay. Not only does the base camp have a mountain hut with basic amenities, but you could also rent camping gear from BNA for one night, allowing you to continue hiking to the peak the following day if you wish.

This particular hike is also part of the ‘Peak of the Balkans’ trail . This longer trail can be made over up to 10 days, depending on your route, crossing through Albania , Montenegro, and Kosovo . It is recommended only to do this route with a guide unless you are a highly experienced hiker, and it is an unmatched way to see these unspoiled landscapes.

Rugova Canyon And Via Ferrata (Rock Climbing And Zip Line)

Rugova, Kosovo. Where to Travel in the Balkans | Balkans Travel Blog

While those traveling by car can appreciate the 25km long Rugova Canyon and its incredible 1000m depth from afar, those feeling adventurous can take the Via Ferrata option, which translates to ‘Iron Path.’ It refers to a route that utilizes ladders and steel rungs without the need for technical equipment, though an affixed harness is secured, keeping participants from the possibility of falling. This way, you can view the canyon via an exhilarating rock climb. Phew.

Combine it with the nearby 700m zip line for a perfect day trip , hurtling over the canyon in under a minute.

Those looking for a more relaxing day out – or who are scared of heights – can enjoy walking along the canyon while spotting the many springs and waterfalls in the area.

What Else To See In Peja

The old bazaar.

While in Peja itself, you can check out the Old Bazaar. In theory, this is a traditional-style marketplace to pick up some local souvenirs , though the options might seem a little lackluster, with the exception of local jewelry artisans. Consider dropping by to relax in a cafe and try some Turkish coffee instead.

Patriarchate Of Peć

Things To Do In Peja, Kosovo - Facade of the Patriachte of Pec Monastery in Pec

One of the best things to do in Peja is visiting the Patriarchate of Peć, a 30-minute walk from Peja city center. Alternatively, you could take a taxi.

This 13th-century monastery is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and considered an important medieval monument in Kosovo. It’s still in use today, and you will see the nuns going about their day. Inside, they will happily give you a tour of the incredibly impressive floor-to-ceiling frescos.

TIP: Serbian monasteries in Kosovo are usually guarded. You may need to hand over your passport to enter, as I did when visiting the Patriarchate of Peć. If you forget your passport, you won’t be able to enter. Some travelers have noted they felt uncomfortable speaking to the police force, but I had a very positive experience with a welcoming man and a cute dog at the entrance.

Visoki Decani Monastery

Just over a 20-minute drive south of Peja is this Serbian Orthodox Christian monastery. The unique domed exterior is surrounded by an impressive backdrop of pine forests and mountains, but the interior is the real show-stopper. Also a UNESCO World Heritage site , the church still has 1000 preserved frescoes built in 1335. It is noted for having the most elaborate examples of stone ornamentation from this period.

White Drin Waterfall & Radaci Cave

Another spot only around a 20-meter drive from Peja, although the waterfall is unfortunately in the opposite direction from Decan Monastery. Still, it’s a great stop on the way to popular tourist cities Gjakova and Prizren, Kosovo’s cultural center.

Follow the walkway through the forest and over old stone bridges till you reach White Drin Waterfall, a remarkably serene spot popular with locals. Also, during your visit, follow the signs to Radaci Cave. Also known as ‘Sleeping Beauty Cave,’ marvel at the stalactites and stalagmites on display. Tour guides here speak English, and the cave is lit up inside with a multi-colored display, so don’t worry if you’re a little scared of the dark. Bring a jacket , and the small ticket cost 2.5 euros.

Are you looking for one of the most beautiful places to visit in Kosovo ? Well, you've come to the right place.

While most visitors stop in the capital city of Pristina , or the charming city of Prizren , we found some of our favorite places to visit in Kosovo were those that were out in nature.

Peja is a place with gorgeous landscapes, delicious home cooked meals, and super friendly people. It's a place we really fell in love with, and was when we truly changed our expectations of Kosovo as a destination.

In this guide we're going to share everything you need to know for visiting Peja, and why it should be added to your list. Let's jump right in!

Where is Peja?

Peja is located in the west of Kosovo , in the region of Rugova. Tucked away in the Accursed Mountains, this small town is actually the third biggest in the country, and is located right by the borders of Montenegro and Albania .

Kosovo is a land locked country, with borders of Montenegro to the north west, Albania to the West, Macedonia to the south, and Serbia to the North and East.

Where is Peja

Peja is located in the west of Kosovo.

How to Get to Peja in Kosovo

The closest airport to all of the top places to visit in Kosovo is the Pristina Airport. From there you can easily get a bus to Peja for just 5 euros, and it is less than an hour and a half away. Peja is also well connected with other places to visit in Kosovo such as Prizren , Gjakove, and Mitrovica.

If flights into Pristina are too expensive, two alternative choices to visit Peja can be by flying into either Podgorica (the capital of Montenegro) or Tirana (the capital of Albania). Both of these cities are 3 1/2 hours away, and you can then get to Peja by renting a car from one of those airports.

Flight Tip:  Using Skyscanner you can put from "your city" to "Everywhere". This way you can see which is the cheapest airport in the area to fly. Also, you can check the calendar to see which are the cheapest dates for your destination!

Search for a flight near Peja:

We had a rental car when we visited, which you can also easily find in the airport of Pristina , as well as inside the city center.

Visiting Peja by Tour

If you don't have a lot of time, but want to visit Peja and see the highlights, we highly suggest doing a tour from Pristina or Prizren . This will allow you to explore more in less time, and meet other people along the way.

Here are a few great tours to choose from:

Entry Requirements for Kosovo

Now that you know where Peja is located and how to get there, it's important to know the specific requirements for entering the country of Kosovo.

Visa Entry Requirements

Kosovo allows visa-free access for up to 90 days for all nationalities throughout Europe  (including the  UK ), the  USA , Australia, and plenty of other nationalities. If you aren't sure whether or not you need a visa for Kosovo, make sure to check out the official website of foreign affairs in Kosovo , or to get in contact with your local embassy.

Note: Due to where Kosovo is located, and because of the war in Kosovo a few decades ago, visiting Kosovo  from  Serbia can be pretty complicated. However, visiting via another surrounding country is pretty easy, and we had no problem crossing the land border via Macedonia .

Covid Entry Requirements

There are no longer any restrictions for entering the country of Kosovo when it comes to Covid-19. Masks are also no longer necessary, and it's even pretty rare that you'll come across anyone who is wearing one.

Local Adjustments for Peja, Kosovo

Whenever traveling to a new destination, there may be certain things differing from your home country. Some of these things could be language, currency, or even electrical outlets used. Here are a few of the "local adjustments" to keep in mind when traveling to Peja, Kosovo .

What Language Do They Speak in Peja?

The official language in Peja, as well as the other places to visit in Kosovo, is Albanian.  92% of people living in Kosovo are in fact of Albanian decent, which is why they speak Albanian, and not Serbian.

Currency Used in Peja

The currency used in Kosovo is the euro. While some of the other places to visit in Kosovo accept credit card more regularly, smaller places such as Peja are more cash based. We did find a restaurant or two that accepted credit card, as well as the bigger hotels. However, we do suggest keeping plenty of cash on you, as ATMs can be pretty limited in the area.

What Plug Types are Used in Kosovo?

The electrical outlets in Peja, Kosovo are for the same plug types as the rest of Europe , which are primarily for plug type F. The standard voltage in Peja is 230 V with a standard frequency of 50 Hz. If you are from the Americas, we definitely suggest purchasing a New%20Year%20Sale%20-%20Order%20Over%20$39+%20Save%2010%%20Off! " https:="" rel="nofollow" shareasale.com="" style="outline: none;" target="_blank" class="">travel adapter which converts the energy as well. This way you won't burn out your electronics.

Is the Water Safe to Drink in Peja?

The tap water in Peja is totally safe to drink, so you won't have any issues drinking from the tap. As many of the activities are outdoors, we do suggest having a refillable water bottle to keep hydrated.

Tipping Culture in Kosovo

The tipping culture in Kosovo can be a little tricky, as the majority of websites claim that tipping isn't common nor is it necessary, However, many locals from other areas of the country told us that it is very much appreciated.

It definitely seemed expected in the restaurants that we visited, and we felt better leaving a bit extra for our servers. We personally suggest leaving 10% as a tip (in cash) if you feel that you have received good service while out at a restaurant.

Things to Do in Peja, One of the Most Beautiful Places to Visit in Kosovo

Now that you know almost everything you need to know about adjusting to the places to visit in Kosovo, Let's check out the best things to do in Peja.

Don't have time to read the whole article and want to save it for later? Just pin it!

Peja, best places to visit in Kosovo Pin

Browse the Bazaar of Peja

Ready to start exploring all that Peja has to offer? While Prizren has a much more ascetically pleasing downtown area, we do think it's still worth doing one thing in the center of Peja, and that's the Bazaar. Here is where you can really immerse yourself in the culture of Kosovo, and browse through the different shops that they have.

Drive Through Rugova Canyon

Peja is known for its landscapes, and Rugova Canyon is definitely one of the top ones. The highway actually goes right though the canyon, so you can admire the large rock walls with the river right next to you. We even found a restaurant on the side of the road to stop and enjoy the beautiful scenery around.

Rugova Canyon has beautiful views while driving through.

Take a Look at "Hotel Relax"

Want to see one of the most random and unique places to visit in Kosovo ? Well, this was something we happened to pass on accident while driving through Rugova Canyon, and decided to stop and check it out.

Right off the side of the highway through Rugova Canyon lies a "hotel" like you've never seen. A local man decided to claim his own spot next to the river, and build an outdoor hotel from things he's accumulated.

Hotel Relax in Peja, top places to visit in Kosovo

This hotel has been created from random items accumulated by a local man.

While one may initially think it's a homeless man, this guy actually lives in Peja, and comes here to escape and just relax, which is exactly why he decided to call it "Hotel Relax", a place in nature to simply hang out and enjoy what the Earth has provided.

We definitely suggest you to stop by and walk over to chat with him. He was so sweet, and down to Earth, and even made some coffee for us while he told his story.

Hotel Relax in Peja, top places to visit in Kosovo

The owner of Hotel Relax even invited us for a cup of coffee.

Hike to Kucisko Jezero

One of our favorites things that we did in Peja was to hike to this beautiful lake. Head down the highway towards the border of Montenegro , and you can park at the restaurant Guri I Kuq, where you'll then be able to start your hike.

We had terrible luck and had to hike in the pouring rain. The hike was extremely steep and rocky, so we suggest trying to go on a dry and sunny day if you can. Needless to say though, the views when we arrived were pretty beautiful. The hike up took about 45 minutes, and the way back took a half hour.

lake in Peja, top places to visit in Kosovo

This beautiful lake can be reached by a steep hike.

Visit Resort Ujevara e Drinit

While we normally wouldn't think to put a resort on our list of things to do, we truly loved Resort Ujevara e Drinit. Just 10-15 minutes outside the center of Peja, this gorgeous hotel and restaurant is a slice of luxury in the mountains. Not only that, but right on the property are two very cool landscapes you won't want to miss out on.

Resort Ujevare e Drimit, top places to visit in Kosovo

Walk Down to the Waterfall

Right behind the restaurant of the hotel you can find a suspension bridge. Walk across and in just a few minutes you'll find a beautiful waterfall! It's free of charge to visit, and super easy to get to.

waterfall in Peja, top places to visit in Kosovo

Explore the Cave

Now walk a little further up and to the left. You'll find a trail that leads to a cave! We truly couldn't believe this was on the same land as the resort right in front of it.

For just a couple of euros you can get a guided tour of the colorfully lit cave, and learn a bit of the history of Peja. The guides are super friendly, and had excellent English.

cave in Peja, top places to visit in Kosovo

This cave is located right behind the resort.

Stop at the Patriarchate of Pec Monastery

While the city of Peja doesn't have a ton of things to see, there is one that is worth mentioning. Right outside the city center of Peja you can find a beautiful red painted monastery. We actually couldn't find the entrance, so we suggest asking a local for directions and not attempting to follow Google like we did.

Check Out the Monastery Visoki Decani

On the road between Peja and Prizren there is a small town called Decani (this is also where we found tours going to the following trek we'll mention). While Decani doesn't have a ton to offer, it does have a beautiful monastery worth stopping by.

Note:  We suggest only going here if you are driving, and are planning on traveling to Peja from Prizren or Pristina.

Trek to Liqeni I Zemres

This was actually at the top of our list for things to do in Peja. Unfortunately, we found little info on the internet, and didn't know just how much of a journey it would be to get there.

This is a great day trip, if you can plan it right. Liqeni I Zemres is located about an hour outside of Peja, and can be reached via tour from The government office in Decanit, or by having a 4x4. DO NOT follow Google Maps, as we wasted hours of our day attempting to go down a road that didn't lead anywhere.

In order to reach this stunning lake you'll have to drive from the town of Decanit to Junik, and then take the long and windy dirt road for about an hour to Grand Gjeravica, where you can start your hike. Make sure to give yourself the day for this one, or you can sleep at Grand Gjeravica and do the hike in the morning.

Take a Trip to Mirusha Waterfalls

This was one of our favorite places to visit in Kosovo , and can be done as a day trip from Peja, Prizren , or Pristina (it's right in the middle of all three).

Upon arrival to Mirusha Waterfalls, you're greeted with two restaurants facing a beautiful set of falls. But the best part of this place is what hides behind it all.

Mirusha falls, top places to visit in Kosovo

There are actually several waterfalls here, and each one can be reached by climbing via rocks and ropes. If you're looking for a hidden gem, then this is definitely it.

Mirusha falls, top places to visit in Kosovo

Mirusha Falls is definitely one of the top places to visit in Kosovo.

Food & Drink in Peja

We really loved the food in Peja, and found it to be very similar to the mountain areas in some of the other places we visited in the Balkans such as Zabljak in Montenegro , and Zlatibor in Serbia . Easy meats, fresh bread, and hearty soups and stews are some of the things you'll find on the menus in Peja.

Here are a few of the dishes we suggest trying:

  • Veal Soup - (our favorite!)
  • Somun - baked round bread similar to pita
  • Tarator - cold yogurt based soup
  • Burek - Flaky, oily pastry rolled and stuffed with meat
  • Flija - dough layered like a crepe with butter and sour cream
  • Stuffed Peppers - (with ground meat)
  • Speca me Maze - broiled peppers bathed in a cheesy sauce
  • Peja - this is the local beer made right in Peja
  • Rakia - homemade fruit brandy that is super strong

Our Favorite Restaurant in Peja: Guri i Kuq

Tucked away in the mountains (right by the border of Montenegro ) is one of the best restaurants we visited in Kosovo . If you're going to eat at one place in Peja, please let it be this one.

We stopped in here quickly to have a bite before our hike. Although we weren't super hungry, we knew we'd be hiking for a few hours so just got a bowl of veal soup. It was so incredible that the only thing we could think of during our hike was having another bowl once we got back.

Food in Peja, Kosovo

We highly recommend the veal soup!

It was pouring rain and the servers couldn't have been kinder when we came in. We ordered local beer and had traditional food, while overlooking the gorgeous surrounding scenery. We loved the people working there, the food, and the atmosphere, and seriously couldn't recommend it enough.

Getting Around Peja, One of the Most Beautiful Places to Visit in Kosovo

While you can get to Peja with public transportation, there is little public transport to the different places in the area when it comes to nature. We highly suggest going with a car, and making sure that it is a 4x4. We didn't see any car rentals in the city, so just to be safe we suggest booking online from Pristina.

If you don't have a car though, you can easily walk around the town, as it isn't so big, and then get tours to explore the best things to do in Peja.

Where to Stay in Peja

There are quite a few different options for places to stay in Peja. You can either stay in the city of Peja itself, or you can stay in one of the cabins on the outskirts. If you're looking for a more relaxing getaway, we suggest choosing accommodation in the mountains.

We personally recommend staying at Resort Ujevara e Drimit, as it is a beautiful property, has a restaurant, and is home to a waterfall and cave on site as well.

cabin in Peja, best places to visit in Kosovo

There are also a lot of great cabins in the mountains to stay in.

If you're looking to be centrally located, and to be close to plenty of restaurants ad shops, then you'll definitely want to stay in the center of Peja. This is also great for those that don't have a car, plan on exploring a lot, or want more convenience during their trip.

Is Peja, Kosovo Safe?

Being tha t Kosovo  doesn't have a lot of tourism, and it still has turmoil wit h Serbia , I definitely didn't think that it would be the safest country to travel to. However, after visiting, we found Peja, (along with the other places to visit in Kosovo)  to be extremely safe.

People are super friendly towards tourists, and we never had any issues walking around alone or at night.

Top 10 Things to See and Do in Peja, Kosovo

  • Author david
  • Date April 4th, 2021

Situated in the eastern section of the Accursed Mountains in western Kosovo is the city of Peja. Located in the mountainous Rugova region, this Balkan city is a dream for curious travelers with its mix of tradition and modernity. The area is home to modern attractions like ski centers and zip-lining balkan natural adventure , beautiful natural locations, and centuries-old UNESCO sites and traditional cuisine. These things make up the top things to see and do in Peja, Kosovo.

The History of Peja

History of Peja

It is thought that Peja was built on the ruins of an ancient Roman town known as Siparantum. Many ancient stelae from the time period have been unearthed in the area.

peja city center

Peja was ruled by the Serbs for 300 after a Serbian Grand Prince liberated the city from the Byzantine Empire in the late 12 th century. Serbian archbishops then built homes and churches in the city, which later became a major religious center.

mendi tours peje

After it fell to the Ottomans in 1455, the city’s was known by its Turkish name, İpek. Nearly five centuries later, the First Balkan War of 1912-1913 ended the Ottoman regime.

mendi tours peje

The city was conquered by Montenegro, beginning a rapid succession of changing hands from Montenegro to Austria-Hungary to Serbia before becoming part of Yugoslavia until its dissolution in 1992. It remained a part of Serbia until 2008, when Kosovo declared its independence, becoming Europe’s youngest nation.

Modern-Day Peja

mendi tours peje

Today, Peja is a quaint city of just under 49,000 according to the 2011 census, but it is rapidly becoming a must-visit tourist destination. But while Peja has seen an influx in visitors from around the world in recent years, its traditional roots remain intact.

mendi tours peje

Its Ottoman and medieval Serbian architecture are still proudly on display and can be seen in its mosques, churches, and its bazaar. The city also has an active and successful sports scene, as it’s home to Olympic gold medal winners, as well as pro football and basketball teams, among others.

mendi tours peje

I had the amazing opportunity to tour Peja with my friend Erjan from Travel Media EU in October of 2020. During my two days there, I learned that the area around Peja is also quite stunning, with gorgeous valleys, peaceful forests, and majestic rivers cutting through the mountainous terrain. It’s one of my new favorite Balkan cities, and I’ll break down why in this guide. These are the top 10 things to see and do in Peja, Kosovo.

Visit the Old Bazaar

mendi tours peje

If you’ve followed my travels for any amount of time, you’ll know that meeting and interacting with locals is something that’s very important to me. I’ve long held the belief that the people make the place. One of the best spots in Peja to people-watch and get a peek into local life is the Old Bazaar and city center .

mendi tours peje

Also known as the Bazaar of Peja, the Old Bazaar is built in the traditional Ottoman style in the center of the city. However, it isn’t the original bazaar. The original bazaar has been destroyed twice—once during World War II and again during the Kosovo War in the late 1990s.

mendi tours peje

There, you’ll find a beautiful, lively, and clean pedestrian street lined with souvenir and jewelry shops, clothing stores, and kebab restaurants. If you need a nice jacket or shoes, you can find them there, as well Albanian flags and even musical instruments. As I visited during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, I also saw vendors selling face masks featuring the logos and colors of local soccer teams.

mendi tours peje

Whether you’re there to just browse or if you have some money burning a hole in your pocket visiting the Old Bazaar is one of the top things to see and do in Peja, Kosovo!

Check Out the Main Square

mendi tours peje

Another popular gathering place for locals in Peja is the Main Square, which is only a 9-minute drive from the Peja bus station. In most European towns and cities, the main square often serves as a meeting place for people. They’re also usually lined with shops, best restaurants , museums, and sometimes even government buildings.

mendi tours peje

In Peja, the main square borders the river. It is bounded by quite a few businesses, including a meat shop with a delicious-looking display of hundreds of sausages in the window. This is sujuk, a spicy sausage that is a staple in Kosovar cuisine. It’s chewy and fresh, and while it certainly has some heat to it, it wasn’t overbearing.

mendi tours peje

If you’re a bit more adventurous, the shop also sells a variety of organ meats, which are my personal favorites. They’re not for everyone, but if you enjoy the buttery, gamy, iron-rich flavors and textures of organs like liver and kidneys, this is the spot for you!

Eat Traditional Tavas at Kulla e Zenel Beut

mendi tours peje

Kosovo is a culture that embraces meat, dairy, and vegetables. Nearly all of its traditional dishes contain one (or all) of the three, and they’re all quite tasty. One of my personal favorite places to eat traditional food in Peja is Kulla e Zenel Beut, which stands just minutes from the main square.

mendi tours peje

Located in a beautiful wood-and-stone house with a tower, the restaurant has a rustic and cozy mountain-like ambiance. The owner is quite friendly and took me back to his kitchens, where I watched them prepare a number of casserole-like dishes called tavas.

mendi tours peje

I recommend starting with some raki, also known as rakija. This is a fruit brandy that is popular throughout the Balkans. It can be made with a variety of fruits, including apples, plums, apricots, pears, and berries. Their quince fruit raki is outstanding!

mendi tours peje

But as good as the raki is, the menu highlights are the tavas. The veal-and-vegetable tava is a creamy mixture of lamb meat, vegetables, and cheese. I also highly recommend the gooey and acidic tomato-and-cheese tava, the spicy chili-and-cheese tava, and the earthy pepper-and-tomato tava.

mendi tours peje

You also can’t leave without trying their buttery baked meat, which disintegrates in your mouth instantly. I suggest stuffing some into some pita bread. The melt-in-your-mouth meat and the fresh, chewy bread are a combination made in Kosovar heaven! It’s one of the best things to do in Peja, Kosovo and will have your mouth watering long after you leave!

Hike Along the White Drin Waterfall

mendi tours peje

While the city itself offers more than enough sites and activities for travelers, I recommend taking some time to explore outside the city. One of my favorite spots in the area is banks of the White Drin River, near Resort Ujevara e Drinit. Located just 30 minutes outside of town, it’s the perfect day trip for anyone who wants to explore the region’s stunning nature .

mendi tours peje

The rushing White Drin River passes through both Albania and Kosovo and is surrounded by deep forest. There’s a path along the banks that most people can easily hike, which passes by the resort and takes you by a flowing waterfall. The mountain water is freezing, so I recommend not getting too close if you don’t want to get drenched by the mist!

mendi tours peje

A set of steps leads to a unique bridge that crosses the river directly above a set of waterfalls. Further along the path, you’ll find the second-largest cave in Kosovo, Sleeping Beauty Cave. My guide Erjan told me that this tunnel-filled cavern is a dream to explore, but if you want to visit, you can only do so between April and October.

mendi tours peje

Hiking trails along the White Drin River is also one of the top things to do in Peja, Kosovo for wildlife enthusiasts. The wet forest environment is the perfect haven for fire salamanders, beautiful amphibious creatures with black and orange markings.

mendi tours peje

We found a curious and friendly one on our hike back to the resort! It was the first time I’d ever seen a salamander in the wild. The little guy even crawled up Erjan’s arm!

Have Raki at Resort Ujevara e Drinit

mendi tours peje

Before you set out on your hike along the White Drin River—or after, if you prefer—I recommend stopping inside Resort Ujevara e Drinit . The resort stands on the banks of the river, giving guests unparalleled views of the area’s natural splendor. The best place on-site to enjoy the views is the hotel’s restaurant, Moncafe.

mendi tours peje

From there, visitors can enjoy the soothing and peaceful sound of the flowing river and enjoy a drink or a meal! If you like to live as the locals do when you travel, I recommend starting your day with an espresso and a raki.

mendi tours peje

It’s one of the best ways to immerse yourself in Kosovar culture, as coffee and raki are common breakfast pairings. It likely wouldn’t be the first choice for most Western visitors, but when in Rome, right?

Go on a Qebaptore Food Tour

mendi tours peje

As I mentioned earlier, meat is a major part of the cuisine in Kosovo. Meat is prevalent throughout the Balkans, where you’ll find one of my all-time favorite meat dishes. Known as ćevap, qebap, or ćevapčići depending on which country you’re in, this mincemeat sausage is one of the most mouthwatering dishes you’ll find in the Balkans.

mendi tours peje

In Peja, you’ll find this dish at numerous restaurants known as qebaptores throughout the city. If you want to sample lots of different variations on the dish, I suggest going on a qebaptore food tour!

Qebaptore Dioni

mendi tours peje

At Qebaptore Dioni, Erjan’s personal favorite qebaptore in Peja, you’ll stuff a fresh, warm pita with ćevapčići, cheese, cucumbers, tomatoes, and cabbage. Few things beat fatty meat; warm, pillowy bread; fresh cheese; and crisp vegetables all in one bite. It’s outstanding!

Gazi Qebaptore Restaurant

mendi tours peje

Five doors down at Gazi Qebaptore Restaurant, the specialty is a spicy sujuk sausage that’s like a smoky chorizo. It’s served with salt and a spice mixture on the side. I suggest sprinkling a bit of each on top. It takes the sujuk to the next level, flavor-wise! Enjoy it with some Peja beer!

Qebaptore Egzoni

mendi tours peje

Further down the street, you’ll find Qebaptore Egzoni. There, they sell meatballs that are more like burgers. They come with cabbage, tomatoes, chilies, cucumbers, pepper seeds, potato salad, and salt. The peppers make the dish quite spicy, but it’s worth it. Flush it down with a milky yogurt drink called ajran to kill the heat in your mouth and throat!

Qebaptore Te Agimi

mendi tours peje

In Peja’s bazaar, you must stop at Qebaptore Te Agimi, which sells veal, ćevapčići, ribs, and much more. If the delicious-looking sujuk hanging in the window is any indication, the food here is outstanding. Their veal is essentially a skirt steak, which you eat with ajvar (red pepper paste), cheese, and cabbage. The creaminess of the ajvar and cheese make it a dish you can’t miss!

Visit Stone Castle Vineyards and Winery

mendi tours peje

Less than 15 miles west of Peja is one of my favorite places in Kosovo, Stone Castle Vineyards and Winery . Located in the town of Rahovec, Stone Castle is the largest winery in Kosovo, as well as one of the oldest. While there are other wineries in the area, Stone Castle is the most famous.

mendi tours peje

The owner of the winery is a successful American businessman, which is why the American, Kosovar, and Albanian flags are displayed outside. The winery was established in 1953 and privatized in 2006. There, they produce a whopping 30 million liters of wine every year. The grapes they used come from their 2,243-hectare vineyard, which they share with private farmers.

mendi tours peje

In their cavernous cellar, I got to see some of their enormous barrels. They range from 500-liters to 10,000 liters and are made of American and Hungarian oak. Unfortunately, the cellar is off-limits to the general public, but you can still try some of their creations in their wine tasting room.

mendi tours peje

Inside the barrels, they age a number of fine wines, including chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, merot, and shiraz. They also produce raki and cognac. Their 2019 Cabernet-Merlot blend taken directly from the barrels is quite young, while the 2016 variety is richer and full of flavor.

mendi tours peje

In the wine-tasting room, you can try their rosé, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, chardonnay reserve, vranats, and more. I suggest the 2015 red dry shiraz and 10-year-old brandy. They also have a strong but smooth raki that’s 49% alcohol. Of course, buying some Stone Castle wine is a must. Some of their reds cost up to 60 Euros (roughly $70 USD) per bottle, but it’s worth it if you can afford it!

Stone Castle Vineyards and Winery Bërnjakë p.n. Rahovec 21000 Kosovo +381 29 276053

Visit Rugova Valley

mendi tours peje

Northwest of Peja, between the city and the Kosovo/Montenegro border, is another of the top things to see and do in Peja, Kosovo, R ugova canyon Valley. This serpent-shaped valley snakes its way through stunning mountain landscapes that include alpine forests, mountain pastures, and glacial lakes.

mendi tours peje

This mostly unspoiled area is a haven for outdoor activities enthusiasts looking to go hiking, zip-lining, skiing, and rafting. The area is also pockmarked with caves, canyons, and waterfalls, all of which are ripe for exploring.

mendi tours peje

During my visit, the zipline was closed, but we came across a river that passes along the main highway. There, we explored two waterfalls before finding a street vendor selling honey and local drinks. He also sold wooden raki bottles that he’d carved from tree branches!

Dine at Restaurant Art Design

mendi tours peje

Roughly a five-minute walk from Hotel Dukagjini is another of my favorite restaurants in the city, Restaurant Art Design. Outside, the restaurant boasts a charming wooden terrace with a stream that runs underneath it!

mendi tours peje

The cooks at Restaurant Art Design are supremely talented, and it shows in the food they serve. In addition to being a massive meat-lover, I also love fresh vegetables.

mendi tours peje

One of their most unique offerings is bread shaped like a traditional qeleshe hat. The cooks fill it with a mixture of sauteed beef, eggplant, peppers, and carrots. The vegetables had a nice, roasted flavor that perfectly complemented the meat and bread. It was like a hearty, stick-to-your-ribs beef stew, perfect for a chilly autumn day.

mendi tours peje

I also highly recommend the vegetable soup, which contains a large amount of pepper and meaty chunks of chicken. The parsley in the soup adds quite a bit of flavor!

mendi tours peje

As is customary in Kosovo, the meal also comes with fresh cucumbers, tomatoes, cheese, onions, and peppers on the side. I suggest adding some of the white cheese to the beef and vegetables, which adds a whole new dimension of flavor to the dish. If you’re brave enough, try one of the peppers, but be warned—they can be pretty spicy!

mendi tours peje

Of course, a dining experience in Kosovo wouldn’t be the same without some raki. The kind I tried at Restaurant Art Design was very smooth and almost tasted like pure water. But, like most raki, it contains a high alcohol content, so don’t let the smooth flavor fool you into drinking too much!

Stay at Hotel Dukagjini

mendi tours peje

While I’m not necessarily a budget traveler, I certainly appreciate a good bargain, especially when it comes to comfortable accommodations. Peja’s best accommodation, Hotel Dukagjini , also happens to be quite affordable. This five-star hotel in the center of the city is the perfect choice for travelers exploring the city.

mendi tours peje

The hotel itself dates back to 1956 and is considered one of Kosovo’s elite hotels. It was completely renovated after becoming part of the Dukagjini Group in 2008. Hotel Dukagjini manages to feel both traditional and modern and boasts unique and charming architecture.

mendi tours peje

It also boasts gorgeous, elegant decor and offers complimentary breakfasts and WiFi. Its spa is also free to use for guests, so if you have the time, I highly recommend enjoying their sauna or getting a massage. It may just be one of the top things you do in Peja, Kosovo!

mendi tours peje

Guests can choose between five different types of rooms: a standard room, a deluxe suite, a deluxe twin room, a presidential room, and a penthouse. All rooms boast stunning views of either the river, city, or Rugova Gorge.

mendi tours peje

My room was furnished with a comfortable bed and mini-bar. There was also a flatscreen TV and a sleek and clean bathroom. The comfort I experienced there was top-notch. The staff was friendly and the hotel’s central location meant that I was never too far from any of the local attractions. It’s a must when staying in Peja!

BONUS: Visit Birra Peja

mendi tours peje

One of my favorite experiences I had in Peja was touring Birra Peja , the largest brewery in all of Kosovo. The brewery is massive and getting an exclusive, VIP tour of the facility made the beer enthusiast in me happy beyond measure. Unfortunately, this tour is not available to the general public, but I’ll walk you through it.

mendi tours peje

The tour begins inside their taproom, which is open to the public. There, you can try some of their cloudy, unfiltered Peja beer. The taproom is the only place you can try it, so I suggest sitting down, relaxing, and really enjoying it.

mendi tours peje

You can also sample their clearer, amber-colored filtered beer, which is also fantastic. Both beers both made with water from the White Drin River, which is why they’re both of such high quality.

mendi tours peje

After sampling both in the taproom, I got to check out their massive brewing system, which is a complex process that involves multiple stainless steel tanks. I also got to see how the malts are cleaned and steamed before water and hops are added.

mendi tours peje

Erjan and I followed that by seeing Peja Brewery’s bottling process in another building. I got to learn how the bottles are washed and filled. The beer gets pasteurized at 200 degrees Fahrenheit, and then the bottles get labeled! I’ve always had a passion for seeing how beer is made. It never ceases to amaze me!

Birra Peja Str. Nexhdet Basha Nr,160 Peja 30000 Kosovo

mendi tours peje

With a booming outdoors scene, the most prominent winery in the country, and some of Kosovo’s top hotels and restaurants, Peja is a dream. Between the meat-rich, mountain-inspired cuisine and the tranquil, scenic surroundings, it’s my belief that Peja must be on every Kosovo travel itinerary. The people are friendly and the sheer variety of activities will keep even the most fickle travelers entertained. Book a trip to Kosovo today to experience the beauty of Peja for yourself!

A day trip to Peja is a must for anyone visiting Kosovo. The location of Peja is perhaps its real asset. The mountains rise up behind and spread below it is the fertile plain of Dukagjini. Cutting into scenic mountains the Rugova Gorge offers great opportunities for hikers, skiers and cave explorers. There are numerous one day and half day trips you can do around the city. Starting from climbing, hiking and even, Via Ferrata. The town is most famous for being the seat of the Serb Orthodox Patriarchate. Albanians on the other hand cherish Peja as an important Ottoman trading town and home to Haxhi Zeka. Zeka was a charismatic leader of the Albanian national movement in the late 19th century. By size of population Peja is also Kosovo’s second-largest city. Despite its near total destruction in 1999, you can still get a flavour of the Ottoman market town and discover beautiful  kullas .

What to visit

SEE VIA FERRATA, HIKING IN RUGOVA, ZIP LINE FOR A UNIQUE NATURAL ADVENTURE

mendi tours peje

Regional Ethnological Museum of Peja

Housed in a beautiful example of a typical Ottomak konak  (town house). The permanent collection presented in three rooms includes traditional costumes, cloth, musical instruments and Illyrian handicrafts. Allow about half an hour to visit the museum.

Haxhi Zeka’s  kulla

The original building was set on fire in 1999 and only parts of the outer walls have survived. The kulla is still owned (and inhabited) by the Zeka family. After its destruction, the family set out to restore it carefully. Unfortunately, it is not open to visitors. A real jewel of an 18th-century Ottoman  konak , Haxhi Zeka’s  konak.

Bajrakli Mosque

Also known as the Çarshia or Market Mosque. The precise date of its construction is not known. It is believed to have been built in the second half of the 15th century. At the time when Peja was the centre of the Peja sançak (an Ottoman military district). That was also the time when Peja enjoyed its unrivalled role as an important regional trading outpost for Dubrovnik.

Çarshia e Gjatë

What used to be the main street of the old bazaar. In the past, both sides of the street were lined with traditional houses, small jewellery ateliers and little shops. Much of the hard cash earned abroad by Albanians working in Switzerland or Germany found its way here to pay for expensive gold jewellery for prospective brides.

The Patriarchate of Peja

The Patriarchate is located in an impressive natural habitat, where the Lumbardhi River comes out of the Rugova Gorge into the fertile plain of Dukagjini. There are six churches under one roof of this monastery. The first church dedicated to the Apostles was built at the beginning of the 13th century by Archbishop Arsenije and was intended as burial place for the Serbian archbishop.

Crowned by the turquoise domes and spiked minarets of the lovely An-Nur Great Mosque, Pekan Baru is one of Indonesia’s more off-the-beaten-track and overlooked towns. It hails in as one of the historic trading ports on the island of Sumatra, positioned between the meanders of the Siak River just a short way from the Strait of Malacca that links across to the mega-industries of Singapore. However, despite its mercantile past that was shaped by the hands of Sultans and Dutch East India alike, this town still retains a glaring cleanliness and accessibility. Its downtown hums with hawkers and street food vendors, aromatic Oriental dishes and Malaysian satay from the lively Malay Quarter signalling a cosmopolitan mix of ethnicities and languages. The dry season can be challenging though, as it brings in a haze from burning palm plantations that can go on to affect the whole region; that apart there are Pekan Baru tour guides aplenty at hand happy to plan excursions out to the beaches of Bintan as well as the agreeable seas of Batam Island to the east.

> Nestled on the slopes of the Sharr mountain and banks of the Prizren Bistrica,  Prizren is known as “Museum City ” and carries the epithet of the most beautiful town in Kosovo.

As soon as w e arrive, we will take a stroll in the narrow streets boasting the numerous captivating religious buildings, enchanting mosques and old Orthodox and Catholic churches. Besides for its multiculturality, Prizren is also known as a political capital of Kosovar Albanians so, along the way, we will make sure to also enter the world of history puzzles and comprehend the civilisations alternating fears and hopes at the Kosovo ground.

During the walk we will visit the Town Museum, explore the striking Sinan Pasha Mosque built in 1615, cross the Old Stone bridge highly resembling the Emperor’s bridge in Sarajevo, see the amazing Hamam Of Gazi Mehmet Pasha and explore its amazingly preserved bazaar with souvenir shops where, for extremely low cost prices, you can purchase some really good hand-made clothes, shoes or jewellery.

Besides its captivating bazaar where you can enjoy amazing shopping opportunities or simply observe the mesmerising work of the old craftsmen, Prizren is  a home to the open-air mosque very often called the Broken Mosque among the locals. This is the oldest oldest Ottoman artefact in Prizren and the first Muslim house of prayer in the city.

> Built in 1306 by king Stefan Milutin, the church is now declared a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance and on the UNESCO’s List of World Heritage in Danger as part of the Medieval Monuments in Kosovo.

After the old town, during the 15 minutes of nice hike to Kalaja Fortress (Kaljaja) looming over the city and surrounding valleys we will make sure to pay attention to the ruins of the Orthodox Church “Our Lady of Ljevis.

Few minutes from the ruins we will notice the amazing Kalaja Fortress, symbol of Prizren. Built in the 11th century, the impressive Prizren Fortress provides the city’s best view so grab your cameras as, from here, you will be able not just seeing Prizren as if in the palm of your hand, but also the surrounding Mt. of Prokletije and Peja.

> Narrow streets of Gjakova

After Prizren, we will visit Gjakova, and trust us, the cuteness of this small old town is overload. Our first stop will be a charming local restaurant nested on Çabrati hill overlooking the town. We will have warm and tasty bread, juicy lamb meat and fresh Shepherd’s salad with some home made juice.

Gjakova carries the title of the most charming town of Kosovo. Although nowadays a bit slow-paced, during the Ottoman Empire, Gjakova used to be a major trading hub on the coveted route between Shkodra and Constantinople. Walking this captivating town it will be hard to face the fact that almost 85% of the town was left in the ruins during the latest war.

> Peja is a home to the Patriarchy of Peja, one of the most important late Byzantine era monuments dating back from 13th century.

Our last stop of the day will be the town which is believed to be built on the ruins of the Siparantum, an ancient Roman town. As soon as we enter Peja you will have a chance to witness the history from its ancient beginnings all the way through the challenges of the recent Kosovo war and struggles to cope with the modern times.

Besides being a cultural and historical treasure trove, Peje boasts some of the country’s biggest mountains and is a paradise for outdoor adventure enthusiasts.

Peja is a town where you will have a chance to get an insight into the real local life and the best way to do so is by visiting the vibrant Peja bazaar.

> You can purchase astounding hand made everyday items and souvenirs at the bargain prices.

We will take a stroll in the streets of the bazaar, talk to the local vendors and try some of the famous Kosovo sudjuk and cheese. Moreover, we will delve deep into the history of Kosovars and meet with the local craftsmen who will introduce us to the story of the Albanian cap traditionally worn by Albanians -qeleshe or plis. It is believed that this woollen headpiece is directly related to a similar headgear worn by the Illyrians. Plis must be kept white at all times, and when this is no longer possible, one has to get a new one.

While older generations still wear it, modernisation has led to Plis caps devolving from an everyday headgear into traditional clothing for special occasions. We will learn how the plis was made from scratch and, afterwards, make a visit to the amazing Peje Ethnological Museum where we will have a chance to witness  the history of the regions from the prehistoric times all the way to the late 20th century.

We will return to Pristina in the evening hours and drop you off at your hotel.
