Maker’s Mark Now Does Supersized Distillery Tour With Star Hill Farm Experiences

  • by Gary Carter
  • August 4, 2023

Maker’s Mark has debuted a new series of visitor tours at the home of its whiskey making campus in Loretto, Kentucky.

Called Star Hill Farm Experiences, the tours are designed to provide guests with a deeper look at the 1,100 acres of natural land where Maker’s Mark Bourbon is made, and highlights the sustainability, agriculture and research initiatives that take place there.

In a statement from Maker’s Mark , the brand touted the Star Hill Farm Experiences as “a natural extension of the vision on which Maker’s Mark was founded,” calling Maker’s Mark co-founder Margie Samuels a “pioneering force behind bourbon tourism in the 1950s, opening the property to family, friends, curious locals and travelers before formal distillery tours existed.”

Maker's Mark Star Hill Farm Experiences

The statement goes on to explain that Samuels’ had a belief that people should be given the opportunity to see where and how their favorite products are made, and that’s the case with these new experiences.

“Since the founding of Maker’s Mark in 1953, achieving the distinctive flavor and quality of our whisky has remained a direct reflection of the environment that surrounds us,” said Rob Samuels, eighth-generation whisky maker and grandson of the Maker’s Mark founders. “We’re proud to offer these new, immersive experiences that not only let visitors explore the natural beauty that Star Hill Farm has to offer, but also better understand and appreciate nature’s influence on the whisky in their glass.”

The Initial tour offerings now available for booking are:

  • The Oak Experience: A first-hand introduction to the American oak tree from soil to sip, including a visit to the white oak research forest, a journey and toast to the Mother Oak tree (one of the oldest oaks in Kentucky), and the opportunity for guests to plant their own white oak.
  • The Seasonal Star Hill Farm Tour: Invites guests on a sensory exploration of Star Hill Farm tailored to the season, including crop harvests, livestock visitation and discovery of ingredients grown on-property for the cocktail and culinary programs.
  • The Maker’s Mark Art and Design Tour: A look at the world-class art and design featured throughout the property, all of which is designed in harmony with and in celebration of its natural surroundings on Star Hill Farm.

“In the past, our guests have only been able to explore a small piece of our home at Star Hill Farm,” said Amanda Humphrey, Star Hill Farm advocacy and experience manager. “With these experiences, we’re excited to invite those interested in learning more about Maker’s Mark to see, touch and interact with the wood, wheat and water that are essential to our bourbon.”

She said visitors can come forage for ingredients they use in bar and restaurant programs, meet the livestock that enrich the soil and call Star Hill Farm home, and see the environmental research projects they’ve undertaken first-hand.

Humphrey noted that additional experiences will be introduced regularly and will vary based on the Kentucky seasons.

Future tour offerings will include truffle foraging, an apiary and beekeeping experience, an immersive look at their estate-grown grains, sorghum harvesting, and more.

These new tour offerings are available in addition to the classic Maker’s Mark distillery tours.

About Maker’s Mark®

In 1953, in Loretto, Ky. Bill Samuels, Sr., fulfilled his dream to create a handmade and delicious bourbon. He decided to make his whisky in small batches, using soft red winter wheat to enhance the softness and sweetness. He then rotated each barrel by hand for consistency and, finally, aged each barrel to taste. While he developed the bourbon, his wife Margie Samuelsideated the bourbon’s name and label, standout bottle shape, iconic and signature look that still involves hand-dipping each bottle in red wax to this day. Together as co-founders, Bill and Margie transformed bourbon from a “commodity” into a premium handmade spirit, and today Maker’s Mark® Kentucky Straight Bourbon continues to be crafted in the same, purposeful way. In recent years, Maker’s Mark has introduced thoughtful, super-premium innovations to its portfolio, including Maker’s Mark 46®, Maker’s Mark® Cask Strength and Maker’s Mark® Private Selection, the industry’s first-ever custom barrel program. Today, Maker’s Mark is the largest bourbon distillery in the world to achieve B Corp Certification and the first distillery to achieve Regenified certification, a reflection of the brand’s dedication towards building a more inclusive and sustainable economy. Maker’s Mark

A must see stop on the bourbon trail.

Its the world-class, historic Maker’s Mark Distillery near Loretto in Marion County, and it’s just minutes from Lebanon, the Heart of Kentucky.

It’s one anchor-end of our Marion County Trail—along with Limestone Branch Distillery in the middle and Independent Stave Company’s Kentucky Cooperage the other anchor-end.

Maker’s Mark Distillery is one of the most iconic stops on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

The distillery hosts more than 100,000 visitors each year from all over the world. The distillery also offers visitors unique opportunities throughout the year including art exhibits, specialty dinners at the onsite restaurant, Star Hill Provisions, festivals and more.

About Maker’s Mark

The first bottle of Maker’s Mark was dipped-sealed and sold for $7 in 1958. In 1980, the distillery was declared a National Historic Landmark.

In 2016 the Maker’s 46 Cellar opened. Previously Maker’s 46 could only be aged during the cold months of the year. Dynamite was used to blast into the limestone hill about 100 yards from the distillery and produce a cave. The cave was transformed into a one-of-a-kind whiskey cellar that provides a tasting room where Maker’s Mark Private Select customers can make their own Maker’s 46 creations. The Cellar is open to visitors taking the Maker’s tour.

In 2023, the grandson of Maker’s Mark founders Rob Samuels leaned the distillery even deeper into sustainability and regenified agriculture. In December of 2023 Maker’s became the first distillery in the world to be “Certified Regenified.” Not only are the farms that provide corn and wheat to the distillery certified, but the distillery itself is now Tier 3 Certified Regenified.

You’ll find touches such as dry laid stone projects by Scottish Master Craftsman Stone Mason Neil Rippingale, and specialty drinks available featuring natural elements from the distillery’s Innovation Garden and mushroom growing zone.

The distillery nowadays emphasizes on-the-grounds farming activities and oak tree regenerative programs with tours, in addition to traditional-style bourbon distillery tours.

Distillery tours are offered every day except for major holidays and every hour on the half hour. Visitors can dip their own bottle in the iconic red wax in the distillery gift shop. The gift shop offers visitors a variety of Maker’s Mark merchandise including clothing, artwork, souvenir items, specialty bottles, and of course bourbon.

Maker's Mark Barrels

Most connoisseurs of fine spirits have heard about and probably sampled Kentucky Bourbon. We are willing to bet you have heard of the Bourbon Trail and might even know the difference between whisky (spelled the Scottish way), bourbon whisky and Kentucky bourbon whisky. If we have already stumped you, don’t worry, keep reading as we highlight one of the best places to learn about all things Kentucky Bourbon Whisky from the experts at Maker’s Mark® Bourbon Distillery .

The Distillery

The distillery was purchased by the Samuels family in 1953; however, the bourbon whisky recipe has been in the family since before prohibition. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark, and the grounds at the distillery are immaculate. It’s almost hard to believe this is an industrial operation considering all the attention to detail.

Distillery Tours

There are four different tours available, the hour-long general distillery tour and three other options featuring tours of at least two hours. Get ready to learn about Bill’s Mash, double-barrel aging, barrel rotation, and red wax. There are some tour restrictions depending on the tour— some tours require being over 21 years of age and able to walk a good distance and climb stairs. Don’t forget to book your tour online in advance, walk-up tours are based on availability.

General Distillery Tour – The standard one-hour tour is very comprehensive and will give you an excellent understanding of the process and time required to make a Kentucky bourbon whisky packaged with the trademarked red wax.

Maker’s Immersion – This two-and-a-half-hour tour dives deeper into the operations of the distillery, including a few areas not available to visitors on the general distillery tour. The tour concludes with a maturation-style tasting and your own set of Maker’s Mark® wax-dipped rocks glasses.

Behind the Bar – During this two-hour option you will have a guided tour of the facility to learn about the distilling process followed by a mixologist class to learn how to create your own scrumptious drinks with the finest Kentucky bourbon whisky. After the session, you will be able to impress family and friends with your drink menu at the next party.

Heritage Tour – Calling all history buffs, this tour will give you an in-depth two-hour lesson on bourbon, all things Maker’s Mark® and American history.

Maker's Mark Bottles

The Bourbon

– Maker’s Mark® – Maker’s Mark 46™ – Maker’s Mark Private Select® – Maker’s Mark® – Cask Strength Bourbon Whisky

Did you know? Look at the logos and you will notice SIV before the Maker’s Mark® name. The “S” is for Samuels, and the Roman numeral IV symbolizes Maggie’s husband’s status as a fourth-generation distiller. It was later discovered that he was actually a sixth-generation distiller.

Bonus: While visiting the distillery, enjoy lunch at Star Hill Provisions®, serving premium, farm-to-table fare. The restaurant is open for lunch every day, check the website for late lunch and dinner hours. Just like everything at this distillery, you will be impressed by Chef Newman Miller’s menu. The menu changes seasonally and features locally sourced and inspired ingredients. Don’t forget to stop in the Maker’s Mark® Shop to peruse the merchandise and take something home to remember your visit.

Flavor Through Nature: Maker’s Mark Distillery Opens Up 1,100 Acre Star Hill Farm to New Tours & Experiences

Maker's Mark Distillery - Introduces Star Hill Farm Experiences Tours

A visit to Maker’s Mark Distillery  in Loretto,  Kentucky doesn’t just happen. It’s not a distillery you just pass by while driving down the highway and drop in. It’s a distillery that takes a while to get to. It’s off the beaten path (be sure to use the directions below, you’ll thank us later). It’s a distillery visit that you go to on purpose. Add all that up and that’s just one of the reasons why its one of the best distillery tours in the U.S.

Maker’s Mark Distillery is one of the oldest distilleries in the country. The original distillery on this site was the Burks’ Mill and Distillery. It was built by Charles Burks between 1805 and 1815. The gristmill and distillery operated until Burks passed away in 1831. In 1889, distilling was begun again by George R. Burks, a great-grandson. He erected the present plant where the stillhouse now stands.

What we know today at Maker’s Mark Distillery began on this site in 1953 by Co-Founders Bill Samuels, Sr. and his wife Margie Samuels. Production began a year later in 1954 and four years later they bottled their first Kentucky bourbon whisky in 1958. Unlike many distilleries that have updated to modern processes not much has changed here since its founding. Many of the methods in use today are still done the old-fashioned way, often by hand, the same way they’ve been done for 70 years. And that is what makes a visit to this distillery so charming.

Introducing the Maker’s Mark Star Hill Farm Experience Tours

Star Hill Farm Experiences is a new series of visitor tours at the home of Maker’s Mark. The tours are designed to provide guests with a deeper look at the 1,100 acres of expansive natural land on which Maker’s Mark Bourbon is crafted, as well as the sustainability, agriculture and research initiatives underway that allow the brand to cultivate bourbon that betters the world, while crafting the most flavorful products possible.

The Star Hill Farm Experiences are a natural extension of the vision on which Maker’s Mark was founded. Matriarch Margie Samuels was a pioneering force behind bourbon tourism in the 1950s, opening the property to family, friends, curious locals, and travelers before formal distillery tours existed. Her belief that people should be given the opportunity to see where and how their favorite products are crafted is amplified with the new experiences, as guests are given the opportunity to not only see the production process, but also participate in Maker’s Mark’s pursuit of flavor through nature .

“Since the founding of Maker’s Mark in 1953, achieving the distinctive flavor and quality of our whisky has remained a direct reflection of the environment that surrounds us,” said Rob Samuels, 8th generation whisky maker and grandson of the Maker’s Mark founders.

“We’re proud to offer these new, immersive experiences that not only let visitors explore the natural beauty that Star Hill Farm has to offer, but also better understand and appreciate nature’s influence on the whisky in their glass.”

Initial tour offerings now available for booking include:

  • The Oak Experience: Oak is a critical part of the bourbon making process. One of the legal requirements of making bourbon is that it must be aged in new charred oak barrels (containers). The Oak Experience is a first-hand introduction to the American oak tree from soil to sip, including a visit to the white oak research forest, a journey and toast to the Mother Oak tree (one of the oldest oaks in Kentucky) and the opportunity for guests to plant their own white oak. Maker’s Mark and The University of Kentucky collaborated on a comprehensive, industry-first effort to map the genome of “MM1,” a white oak tree on Star Hill Farm estimated to be up to 500 years old . Studying the genetic data of this mother tree will provide information about the species’ longevity, disease resistance and vitality.
  • The Seasonal Star Hill Farm Tour : This tour takes guests on a sensory exploration of Star Hill Farm tailored to the season, including crop harvests, livestock visitation and discovery of ingredients grown on-property for the cocktail and culinary programs.
  • The Maker’s Mark Art and Design Tour: Artwork has always been a part of the distillery. When walking through Warehouse B (on the way to the gift and bottle shop) make sure to look up and see the Chihuly glassworks. In reality, you can’t miss it. What you may miss though are the hidden cherubs. If you take a close look you’ll find five hiding among the beautiful sea urchins. Throughout the tour you’ll discover world-class art and design features, all of which is designed in harmony with and in celebration of its natural surroundings on Star Hill Farm.

“In the past, our guests have only been able to explore a small piece of our home at Star Hill Farm,” said Amanda Humphrey, Star Hill Farm Advocacy and Experience Manager. “With these experiences, we’re excited to invite those interested in learning more about Maker’s Mark to see, touch and interact with the wood, wheat and water that are essential to our bourbon. Additional experiences will be introduced regularly and will vary based on the Kentucky seasons. Future offerings will include truffle foraging, an apiary and beekeeping experience, an immersive look at estate-grown grains, sorghum harvesting, and more. New tour offerings are available in addition to the classic Maker’s Mark distillery tours, offering first-time visitors the chance to design their perfect day at Maker’s Mark and give existing fans a reason to return.

In 1953 Bill Samuels, Sr., fulfilled his dream to create a handmade and delicious bourbon. He decided to make his whisky in small batches, using soft red winter wheat to enhance the softness and sweetness. He then rotated each barrel by hand for consistency and, finally, aged each barrel to taste.

While he developed the bourbon, Margie Samuels ideated the bourbon’s name and label, standout bottle shape, iconic and signature look that still involves hand-dipping each bottle in red wax to this day.

Together Bill and Margie transformed bourbon from a “commodity” into a premium handmade spirit, and today Maker’s Mark® Kentucky Straight Bourbon continues to be crafted in the same, purposeful way.

Today, Maker’s Mark is the largest bourbon distillery in the world to achieve B Corp Certification and the first distillery to achieve Regenified certification, a reflection of the brand’s dedication towards building a more inclusive and sustainable economy.

Maker's Mark Distillery - Star Hill Farm Tours

1) Regenerative Farming Practices In 2022, the 1,100 acres of Star Hill Farm earned Tier 2 certification from Regenified, an independent regenerative soil verification leader. The brand champions regenerative farming practices to improve soil biology, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and maximize the flavor of everything the farm yields. 2) Local Ingredient Sourcing 86% of the ingredients featured at our on-site restaurant and in our cocktail program are grown on-site or, like the ingredients in our whisky, sourced from within a 30- to 60-mile radius. 3) Farm Tour Visitors’ Experience A new “farm tour” visitors’ experience gives distillery visitors a chance to learn not only about how we make our whisky, but how we are protecting and nurturing our natural environment.

4) Zero Waste-to-Landfill Distillery Maker’s Mark became a zero waste‑to‑landfill distillery in December 2022 through diligent recycling, reuse and composting efforts supported by the entire employee team. 5) The Right Weight 4. Zero Waste-to-Landfill Distillery Maker’s Mark became a zero waste‑to‑landfill distillery in December 2022 through diligent recycling, reuse and composting efforts supported by the entire employee team. Maker’s 46® refreshed its packaging, reducing its weight by 32% and enabling a 975-tonne CO2e decrease. 6) On-Site Lakes Maker’s Mark founders Bill and Margie Samuels purposefully chose Star Hill Farm for their whisky distillery because of its access to spring-fed water sources. Protection and conservation of these on-site lakes continues to be a central part of our environmental stewardship.

7) The Genome Tree Maker’s Mark and The University of Kentucky collaborated on a comprehensive, industry-first effort to map the genome of “MM1,” a white oak tree on Star Hill Farm estimated to be up to 500 years old. Studying the genetic data of this mother tree will provide information about the species’ longevity, disease resistance and vitality. 8) Natural Water Sanctuary Maker’s Mark owns 100% of the watershed surrounding our water source, with 75 acres – and expanding – designated as Natural Water Sanctuary. 9) Native Plants and Pollinator Garden We plant native grasses in the Natural Water Sanctuary to increase biodiversity and the water quality with greater contact between water and limestone. The plants also help reintroduce native pollinators, including bees, butterflies and groundnesting birds.

10) Cover Crops & Livestock Using systems like cover crops and rotational grazing, we’re helping improve soil structure and health as part of the holistic regenerative farming model. As ruminant animals are reintroduced to the land, they improve the diversity of soil biology and leave organic fertilizer for plants. 11) White Oak Research Forest With the University of Kentucky, Maker’s Mark created the world’s largest white oak research forest. With more than 400 unique families of white oak trees, the oak forest acts as a living laboratory for scientists to study, understand and improve the species.

Maker's Mark Offers New Tours Of Its Farm Estate

Maker's Mark Offers New Tours Of Its Farm Estate

July 31, 2023 –––––– Danny Brandon , , , ,

Maker’s Mark has expanded its visitor program with a series of three new tours featuring different aspects of Star Hill Farm, the distillery’s 1,100-acre property. The new tour offerings, called the Star Hill Farm Experiences, are designed to explore the natural resources that go into making its bourbon.

The first of the three offerings, called “The Oak Experience,” is for visitors interested in things arboreal. The $220 tour starts with a quick course on American white oak trees and then explains the intricacies of barrel maturation and cask finishing. Visitors are then taken through the property’s white oak research forest, including a visit to the Mother Oak tree —one of Kentucky’s oldest trees, estimated to be between 300 and 500 years old. The tour, which lasts two and a half hours, concludes with a tasting of expressions from the Maker’s Mark Wood Finishing Series.

The second offering is called the “Star Hill Farm Tour.” This package explores the Star Hill Farm wheat fields and livestock pastures. Other options are tailored to the season, with this summer’s focus on the mushroom quarry, apiaries, and garden. This one costs $60 and lasts just over an hour; it starts with a Gold Rush cocktail and concludes with a tasting that includes three samples from the Private Select and Wood Finishing series.

The sheep are just one of the attractions part of the seasonal Star Hill Farm tour

The third new option is called the “Maker’s Mark Art and Design Tour,” and focuses more on the aesthetic side of the Maker’s Mark campus, showcasing some of the original art pieces on display there. The hour-and-a-half tour costs $45 and starts with a welcome cocktail. It concludes with a viewing of Spirit of The Maker , a piece by the world-renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly that was installed on the ceiling of Maker’s main rickhouse in 2013 , accompanied by a single tasting from the Private Select range.

Dale Chihuly's glass piece Spirit of the Maker is the final stop on Maker's new art and design tour

The tours have already started rolling out, with tickets available online via the Maker’s Mark experience page —which also contains additional booking information. Although not required, guests are encouraged to book in advance to secure a spot and arrive at least 15 to 20 minutes early. The classic Maker’s Mark tours will still be offered.

Maker’s Mark has already expressed an interest in expanding the Star Hill Farm tours in the future. Although the specifics haven’t been announced, there are plans for a bee-centric apiary experience and a tour that dives even deeper into its estate-grown wheat. This is all part of an effort by distillers to bring the issues of terroir and sustainability into the picture, while also casting a wider net to attract even more new visitors to what’s already a booming tourist destination.

Maker’s Mark Bourbons to Try

91 Maker's Mark Wood Finishing Series: BEP (2023), 55.35%, $70 The latest offering in the Wood Finishing Series is finished in barrels with ten virgin toasted oak staves. It has notes of soft spices, vanilla, chocolate milkshake, dried herbs, and pepper. Its lengthy finish incorporates oak with more chocolate and spice.

89 Maker’s Mark, 45%, $30 This is Maker's flagship expression, a wheated bourbon with the trademark red wax seal. Its main notes consist of caramel, vanilla, toffee, and almonds. The finish is reminiscent of a pie, with crust, candied fruit, praline, and pecan notes emerging.

Is Makers Mark a Top Shelf Bourbon?

Maker's Mark is a highly acclaimed and widely available bourbon that can be considered top shelf. It is a wheated bourbon, which means it uses wheat instead of rye as the secondary grain in the mash bill. This gives it a softer, sweeter flavor than other bourbons. The regular version of Maker's Mark has earned a “mid-shelf” rating, while its Cask Strength variant has been given a “top shelf” rating by many whiskey connoisseurs due to its deeper, more robust flavor profile. Maker's Mark Cask Strength is often seen as one of the best widely available wheated bourbons out there, making it an excellent choice for those loking for a top shelf experience without having to search far and wide for bottles like Pappy or Weller.

Who is the Current Owner of Makers Mark?

Makers Mark is currently owned by Beam Suntory, Inc., a global leader in premium spirits. Founded in 2014 through the merger of two of the world's leading beverage companies — Beam Inc. and Suntory Holdings Limited — Beam Suntory has a portfolio of more than 100 brands, including many of the world's most admired and top-selling premium spirits. Maker's Mark Distillery was acquired by Beam Suntory in 2011 and is now the sixth largest bourbon distillery in the world. Maker’s Mark Announces Rye Bourbon, First New Mashbill Ever

maker's

Thank you for joining The Bourbon Review and Tito Belvedere for April Fools’ Day ! We’ll see you next year—if not sooner.

Maker’s Mark distillery, famous for their red winter wheated whiskey, announced this morning that for the first time since their founding more than six decades ago, they’ll be releasing bourbon whiskey made with a second, rye mashbill.

Maker’s Mark Rye Bourbon breaks a precedent of more than half a century, and the new bottling, aged the same way as the wheat recipe, will be distinguishable only by the green wax atop the bottle.

“All these years we’ve been so focused on wheat—the whole time there was a whole other grain out there for flavoring bourbon,” explained Bill Samuels, patriarch of the brand. “We started playing with it about a decade ago, and after it aged for a few years, I said, well there might be something here.”

In contrast with the smooth, slightly crisp profile of the wheated Maker’s Mark bourbon, Maker’s Mark Rye Bourbon will be a sharp, spicy bourbon meant to hurt a little on the palate.

“I like that kick you get. It’s definitely different than what we’ve ever done before.”

The distillery has apparently done secretive market tests to examine whether the bartending world is ready for a rye bourbon, and according to Samuels, they see a huge opportunity. “We’re already looking at cutting back on this easy-drinking stuff and turning out some of this punchier, more aggressive recipe for the next few years,” explained Samuels.

Maker’s Mark Rye is available today, April 1, on limited shelves for $49.99.

Kentucky Mule

Liquor.com has been serving drinks enthusiasts and industry professionals since 2009. Our writers are some of the most respected in the industry, and our recipes are contributed by bartenders who form a veritable "Who's Who" of the cocktail world.

Though it's popularity has waxed and waned over time, the Moscow Mule remains one of the most popular cocktails in the United States. First created in Los Angeles in the 1940s (despite its namesake), the refreshing, effervescent combination of vodka, lime and ginger beer is a member of a broader family of cocktails called bucks—drinks that include ginger beer and citrus—which date to the late 1800s. The Moscow Mule is one of the best known cocktails of this kind, but the "mule" terminology itself has since extended to a wider array of drinks.

The Kentucky Mule substitutes bourbon for vodka, hence the “Kentucky” moniker. The weightier profile of bourbon cuts through the ginger more noticably than vodka, resulting in a more flavorful drink than the original. For the best results, use a high-quality ginger beer with a spicier flavor profile that can better stand up to the whiskey. Or, if you’d like to experiment, you can try your hand at making your own ginger syrup . In that case, use club soda as your bubbly topper.

The Kentucky Mule is exceedingly easy to make. Simply combine your ingredients with plenty of ice in a copper mug, if you have one. Otherwise, a highball glass will do. Garnish with mint, and you have an whiskey-based twist on the classic that you’ll want to drink all year long.

Liquor.com / Tim Nusog

Ingredients

2 ounces bourbon

1/2 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed

Ginger beer , to top

Garnish: mint sprig

Add the bourbon and lime juice to a copper mug or a highball glass.

Fill the mug or glass with ice and top with ginger beer.

Garnish with a mint sprig.

What's the Difference Between a Buck and a Mule?

Both a buck and a mule denote drinks that follow the classic highball template , but specifically call for ginger beer or ginger ale, along with a squeeze of citrus. One of the earlier and most popular examples of a buck is the Dark 'n Stormy , but the term covers a range of cocktails that include these ingredients.

The mule is one of the cocktails that falls under the buck umbrella. It originally only described its namesake Moscow Mule, but the runaway popularity of the cocktail has caused "mule" to supplant "buck" as the more common modifier in recent times. It could be argued, however, that a buck can mean a highball that uses ginger beer and any citrus, while a mule specifically calls for lime.
