Chascona House Museum

Located in the Bellavista neighborhood of Santiago, Chascona House was the home of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. He named the home ‘La Chascona’ (‘tangle-haired woman’) after his wife Matilde, and today it’s an excellent museum full of his personal possessions, including a painting by Diego Rivera.

Museum of Memory and Human Rights

Set in Santiago, the Museum of Memory and Human Rights was founded to commemorate the victims of human rights abuses during the regime of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet between 1973 and 1990. The museum has three floors with audio exhibits, interactive photography, newspaper archives and video footage of detention centres.

Best museums in Chile

Our escorted tours of Chile take you to the country’s top museums, from the former home of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, to a commemoration of the victims of the Pinochet regime.

Traditionally made from deep-fried wheat dough, a sopaipilla is South America’s version of doughnuts. In Chile, they’re made with pumpkin in the dough, and served as a side dish with pebre, a chili sauce, or as a delicious dessert after being boiled in a chancaca sauce, a hot sweet syrup.

A classic Chilean condiment found across the country, pebre is served with many meals including fried sopaipilla, or spread on bread and meat. It’s a sauce of chili pepper, garlic, onion, olive oil and coriander, although variations can be found in different regions and households.

Empanadas are a beloved dish across Latin America. In Chile, they’re traditionally made with a filling called ‘pino’, a mix of ground beef, raisins, onions, black olives and hard boiled eggs. Our Local Specialists will show you where to try the best empanadas at any time of the year.

Best food in Chile

We’ll take you on a culinary journey through Chile, as we reveal the best places to try classic empanadas and delicious sopaipilla.

Mountains. Wines. Cities.

This long and narrow country offers a variety of different ecosystems to explore. From the world’s most arid desert in the north, lush forests and coastal shores, to the frozen land in the south that is home to penguins, the activities are endless. Whether it’s sighting volcanoes, horseback riding or simply sipping on the world renowned wine, an adventure awaits. Speaking of wine, Chile has many vineyards and over 20 different types of grapes – a wine tasting is a must.

Destination Must-See's

Chile ms2

Founded in 1541, Santiago is the capital and largest city in Chile. It has been almost completely destroyed by war and natural disaster and rebuilt multiple times. Today, this peaceful location (bordered by miles of vineyards and the Andes mountains) has grown into a flourishing cultural, administrative and financial center.

Chile ms3

Torres del Paine:

This spectacular national park is internationally recognized as one of the most beautiful, unique, and uncontaminated places on the planet. It has beautiful views of lakes, rivers, waterfalls, glaciers, forests, and incredible wildlife. The dramatic landscape arises form the turbulent movements of the earth that occurred 12 million years ago.

Chile ms4

Located in the southern end of South America, Patagonia is shared by Argentina and Chile. Chilean Patagonia is the perfect place to take in the rugged coastline, a collage of islands and absolutely stunning scenery. Visitors can be seen riding horseback, cycling, trekking, kayaking and rafting in this romantic, remote getaway.

Destination Must-Do's

Chile md1

Funicular up Cerro San Cristobal:

If you want the best view of Santiago this is the way to go. The park high on the hill overlooking the city is Santiago’s largest green space. There are a multitude of attractions here such as the zoo, church, botanical garden, two public swimming pools, and a wooden playground. At the very top you will find the famous statue of the Virgin Mary.

Chile md2

Cruise through the Chilean Fjords:

Experience one of the most underrated places on the continent. This “edge of the world” location is anything but desolate. Some of the most fascinating features of Patagonia are its incredible glaciers. Unlike most glaciers in the world that are shrinking each year, these are still expanding. Some are only accessible by boat as they lay in one of the world’s most remote and remarkable landscapes.

Chile md3

Strait of Magellan:

This channel at the southern tip of South America connects the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. It is 350 miles long and about one mile wide at its narrowest point. Discovered in 1520 by the Portuguese maritime explorer Ferdinand Magellan, it is a narrow natural passage between oceans but is considered very difficult to maneuver because of climate and narrow passageways. Today it remains an important ship route.

Chile md4

Chilean wineries:

Originally produced for catholic mass rituals, Chilean wine is among some of the most popular in the world. Giving Chile uniqueness to their wine is the Carmenere grape. Originally born in France, this grape now thrives in the climate of Chile. The grapes create a deep savory red wine that is nothing short of spectacular.

Expert Advice

PaulVieira

It’s good to know that Chile is on 220 V / 50Hz and uses European style 2-prong round plugs or the V prong flat plug.

Chile e2

Chile can actually get chilly. It covers an area that ranges from tropical in the north all the way down to the windswept tip of the continent.

Chile e3

Consider our Easter Island extension. It’s a Chilean territory and worth the trip for a chance to explore this remote and mysterious island – home of the iconic moai statues.

The 9 Best Chile Tours For Unforgettable Adventures That Are Achievable & Affordable!

Expert travel storyteller Jordan Adkins, founder of InspiredByMaps.com, brings a decade of adventures across 101 countries and 450+ UNESCO sites into rich, off-the-beaten-path narratives, melding ecological expertise with genuine, seasoned travel insights. His full bio can be found here.

Wines come to mind when Chile comes up in travel conversations and for good reason. This South American country has been producing wines for almost 500 years, thanks to Spanish communion wines that first planted the idea.

Today, Chile is home to some of the best coastal mountain grapes, such as those grown in Maipo Valley, and cool climate varietals, such as those grown in Casablanca. Beyond the more familiar red wines, Chile is distinctively known for its Pinot Noir and Syrah – the former flourishing in Chile, the latter a rising star.

What a convenience these wine-growing regions are within easy reach of the well-worn Santiago de Chile-Valparaiso tourist circuit that takes visitors from the capital to coast in comfortable day trips, with enough time to do a vineyard tour and wine tasting in between. Fortunately, typical group tours in Chile that take this capital-to-coast route make it a point to stop somewhere along the way and indulge everyone’s taste buds.

best tour operators in Chile - best Chile tour package - best tours in Chile - best tour companies in Chile - best Chile tours

For those keen on history, the central coast is a must-see. Before the construction of the Panama Canal that made navigating between the Atlantic and the Pacific much shorter, Valparaiso was an important resupply stop for ships coming up from the Straits of Magellan. All that history is contained in the old quarter that UNESCO deemed important to preserve.

Away from the central coast, there’s much to see in this long, thin strip of land sandwiched between the Andes and the Pacific. The barren and seemingly alien landscape of the arid Atacama Desert to the north, and the ice-sculpted landscape, horned peaks and blue-tinted glaciers of Patagonia to the south beckon.

Both have their intrepid-minded fan base, and both offer an opportunity to escape the crowd that often converges where crisp white wines are served.

The logistics of pulling off such an expedition through the icy Patagonian wilderness and the battered sand and rock of the Atacama would be mind-bending, though, to say nothing of prohibitive.

best tour operators in Chile - best Chile tour package - best tours in Chile - best tour companies in Chile - best Chile tours

These days, however, organized group tours make even shorter treks into these desolate lands possible and light on the pocket. And if you want to add a jaunt into another country – and even in that tiny island floating in the vast South Pacific – group tours offering multi-country trips are easily arranged from within Chile.

Leave the travel planning to the experts, and before you know it, you’re face to face with a massive stone statue that defies notions of transport. If the ancient islanders knew how to get them from A to B, then modern tour operators shouldn’t have any problem getting you from the north of Chile to the south, notwithstanding the 2,700-mile distance.

Where to begin? Start with a bite-sized trip into the country, and add more tours as you go along.

Itinerary: the Atacama Desert and Uyuni Salt  Flats

Group Size: 20

Age Range: 10 to 99

Operator: Bamba Travel

Large-group, partially guided adventure through two of the world’s desolate and most surreal landscapes.

  • Geysers
  • Moon and Death Valleys
  • Atacama ‘Dead Sea’
  • Dali Desert
  • Laguna Colorada
  • Uyuni Salt Flats

On arrival at Calama airport, transfer to San Pedro, the Atacama gateway to the Atacama Desert. Enjoy the rest of the day exploring the town at your own pace. Head out to the Moon Valley and Valle de la Muerte (Death Valley) on Day 2 to see whimsical salt and clay formations and the conical summit of Licancabur Volcano rising in the lunar-like landscape.

Witness the Tatio Geysers get active, dip into a relaxing thermal bath, and float in the cold water of the Cejar Lagoon, Atacama’s answer to the Dead Sea.

Depart San Pedro de Atacama for the Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia. After crossing the border, switch to a 4×4 vehicle and drive to a lagoon and a lake in the shadow of Licancabur. Press on through the surreal boulder-dotted landscape of the Dali Desert, so named for inspiring the artist in creating his art.

Past steaming geysers and craters containing boiling mud, please arrive at the blood-red-colored Laguna Colorada, named for its mineral-rich waters where pink flamingos feed.

(If you want to go straight to where the desert adventure starts, sign up for this weeklong Atacama & Uyuni Salt Flats Adventure 7D/6N.)

Marvel at the vast white expanse of the Uyuni Salt Flats as you drive to Fish Island in the middle of it where cacti and petrified coral dot the landscape. Breathe in the imagery as you go to Villa Mar town for your last night on the trip. Leaving Villa Mar town in Bolivia, cross the border back to San Pedro de Atacama, where the trip ends.

Spend three nights in San Pedro de Atacama and three nights in shared rooms throughout the Uyuni trip. Expect 4 breakfasts, 3 lunches and 2 dinners. An English-speaking guide accompanies you during the Atacama tour and a Spanish-speaking guide during the Uyuni tour. Transport combines van, minibus and 4WD during the Uyuni tour.

Founded in 2005, Mexico-based Bamba Travel started as a hop-on, hop-off bus service operator. Over the years, they expanded to include services that make it easier for independent travelers to travel in local transportation and stay in a destination for as long as they want and still have the flexibility to create their itinerary. They have grown to provide their services to more than 80 countries worldwide.

If you want to add a Uyuni adventure and make Chile your base, this weeklong Atacama & Uyuni Salt Flats Adventure 7D/6N will get you there.

Tourism in Chile Where the impossible is possible

From the extreme north with the driest desert in the world to the austral south with eternal ice and inverted waterfalls, Chile is an invitation hard to refuse. Learn about tourism in Chile and be amazed by the experiences in the southernmost portion of the world.

norte

Discover our diversity

The tranquility of vast sandy esplanades and intense sunshine contrast with deep blue lagoons, small towns where the native customs are kept intact and large cities with beautiful beaches.

Nestled in a plain of small valleys and coastal destinations, central Chile stands out as one of the most populated areas and surprises with the assortment of activities that can be performed, from the mountains to the beaches.

The mystical Rapa Nui culture floods the entire island and gives life to one of the most emblematic destinations in the world. Its pink sand beaches, volcanoes and grasslands along with more than a thousand Moais are just some of its main attractions.

The rain falls heavily on millenary ancient forests of deep vegetation and assorted wildlife, and then gives way to a deep blue sky. Southern Chile stands out not only for its wonderful green landscapes, but also for being one of the most important areas for adventure tourism in the world.

An almost untouched nature full of mountains, fjords, glaciers, forests, steppes, pioneer villages where you can breathe the cattle traditions and the gaucho culture, along with important cities, is part of what you can find in the Chilean Patagonia.

4-Hour Private Market and Food Walking Tour in Santiago

Title 7713

We offer 24 hr free cancellation on most of our tours, winery visits and hotels. For more detail please see the individual cancellation policies on the tour, winery or hotel page.

Tour Overview

Join this walking culinary tour in Santiago to experience Chile's vibrant market district first hand and discover the local culture.

You'll not only get an introduction to the fresh, simple but wholesome typical fare that Chileans eat at home, but you'll get to sample it as well.

The tour starts in the Plaza de Armas and from there you will walk your way north through La Vega Chica, La Vega Central, Tirso de Molina and Mercado Central. This will take you through the lively bustle of the real working market that supplies much of the city with its fresh goods. A blend of colors, smells, faces with just a bit of chaos.

You'll have the opportunity to try home-style dishes like Porotos (beans); enjoy a refreshing Mote con Huesillo, which Chileans themselves can’t decide if it’s a dessert or a drink; another typical Chilean drink with a history; and other typical Chilean treats. You'll also enjoy some seafood in the Mercado Central paired with a crisp glass of Chilean white wine.

More than just a culinary tour, this is an excellent way to discover the local culture.

What’s included

  • A traditional Chilean alcoholic drink, a glass of wine, a bottle of water
  • 4-5 food tastings
  • Bilingual tour guide
  • Hotel pick-up and drop-off
  • Any personal expenses
  • Food and drink not mentioned

Santiago's Plaza de Armas, next to the statue of Pedro de Valdivia on his remarkable horse.
