After 40 years, Kwik Trip will no longer sell milk in plastic bag starting in May

For over four decades, Kwik Trip customers prided themselves on saving pennies and the environment by purchasing milk in a plastic bag. Week after week they would secure the bag using a special pitcher and then pour.

This week the LaCrosse-based company made the decision to discontinue the sale of Nature’s Touch bagged milk across all stores beginning in May 2024. Company officials attribute the change to guest preferences and purchasing patterns, citing declining demand for the bagged product compared to milk sold in jugs.

Scott Zietlow, CEO of Kwik Trip said that after thorough consideration and analysis, the company decided to discontinue bagged milk to focus on items that resonate more strongly with guests.

John McHugh, Vice President of External Relations said the company marketing department has contacted groups who had special promotional coupons for bagged milk and have offered a new solution with our other milk offerings.

"This is an end to a product that was associated with the Kwik Trip brand for many years, but after evaluating the need and cost for new equipment to replace our antiquated bagged milk equipment, and the decreased customer demand, we made the tough decision to discontinue Nature’s Touch milk in the bag,” McHugh said.

Milk in a Bag and Other Things in Kwik Trip

They have fresh coffee too. I drink coffee occasionally, but Tiffany has to have hers every morning. Whenever we go into a Kwik Trip , someone is making a fresh pot. We have yet to have old coffee while there and they have a large selection of specialty brews as well. They also have a variety of creamers, sweeteners, and syrups. And its pretty cheap, especially compared to going to Starbucks.

Then there’s the dairy section. If you are not from Wisconsin, there’s a good chance you have no idea what cheese curds are. Basically, its baby cheese. Its the form cheese takes as its being made before its been aged and pressed into a compact rectangle for selling blocks of cheese. At Kwik Trip , its brought in daily so you know its fresh. When you bite into it, it squeaks on your teeth. The fresher it is, the more pronounced the squeak.

Then of course is the milk in a bag. This is brought in daily as well. Its a half-gallon, so not as much as you might buy normally, but its still enough for a few days. It comes in a bag though, not a plastic jug. They have pitchers stacked right next to the milk too, and they are free to take, so grab one as well.

The milk comes in the standard varieties, Whole, Skim, and 1% (or whatever the terms are now), as well as chocolate and orange juice. When you get home, drop the bag in the pitcher and cut off the corner and you have a convenient spout. Do not pour the milk in the pitcher though, just drop in the bag.

Kwik Trip also has a decent selection of cheap vegetables and fruit as well. Potatoes, onions, apples and oranges, along with some others. In Wisconsin, you don’t have to worry about running into a grocery store for 30 minutes to find what you need when its something Kwik Trip has. They also have some meat like ground hamburger, deli cuts, bacon and sausage. Of course, they have salads and sandwiches premade as well if you are in a rush and want to grab something fast.

Beyond that, its a standard gas station with Slim Jims, soda, beer, ice, and toiletries. The ATMs are free as well.

So there you go, from a Wisconsin native to you, the benefits of Kwik Trip .

The milk in a bag is definitely a Kwik Trip thing. I’ve never seen it in any other stores, even in Wisconsin. I have heard that Kwik Trips not in Wisconsin also have them, but they are pretty much exclusive to the Midwest.

(WFRV) – Due to what Kwik Trip described as a ‘substantial’ decline in demand, the company has decided to discontinue Nature’s Touch bagged milk.

Kwik Trip announced that it has decided to discontinue the sale of Nature’s Touch bagged milk across all stores. This will reportedly start in May 2024.

The release says that purchasing patterns indicated a ‘substantial’ decline in demand for the product when compared to milk sold in jugs. Bagged milk was reportedly been a part of Kwik Trip’s product line for over 40 years.

We constantly evaluate our product offerings to ensure we’re meeting the needs and preferences of our guests. After thorough consideration and analysis, we have decided to discontinue bagged milk to focus on items that resonate more strongly with our guests. Scott Zietlow, CEO of Kwik Trip

It was also mentioned that Kwik Trip’s Marketing Department contacted groups that had special promotional coupons for bagged milk.

“This is an end to a product that was associated with the Kwik Trip brand for many years, but after evaluating the need and cost for new equipment to replace our antiquated bagged milk equipment, and the decreased customer demand, we made the tough decision to discontinue Nature’s Touch milk in the bag,” John Hughes, Kwik Trip’s vice president of external relations, said.

McHugh said the marketing department has contacted groups who used special promotional coupons for bagged milk and is offering solutions with Kwik Trip’s other milk products. Kwik Trip CEO Scott Zietlow says the company will focus on items that “resonate more strongly with our guests.”

Bagged milk will disappear from stores beginning in May.

(WLUK) -- A Kwik Trip tradition is coming to an end.

Kwik Trip says it will discontinue the sale of Nature’s Touch bagged milk across all stores beginning in May 2024.

In a statement released Wednesday, Kwik Trip wrote, "While bagged milk has been a part of Kwik Trip’s product lineup for more than forty years, guest preferences and purchasing patterns have indicated a substantial declining demand for this product compared to milk sold in jugs."

Kwik Trip, which is planning a second distribution center , currently carries the Nature’s Touch brand of bagged milk.

Kwik Trip, which recently was named to USA Today’s Top Workplaces list , has about 800 locations. O ne of the biggest independently held c-store chains in the country, it serves customers in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. It produces more than 80% of the products sold in its stores, supplied by its own bakery, commissary, dairy and distribution center.

Milk in a Bag: An Unusual Find from Kwik Trip

• Lower in price than regular milk in a jug
• I can go into the store, get milk and get out without having to walk all the way to the back of the supermarket just to buy milk.
• It only comes in half gallons.
• The bags are kinda floppy, like carrying a dead body. (They kinda ooze around the counter and refrigerator, but at these prices, I can put up with that.)
• You have to put them in a special pitcher. (It's free when you buy your first bag of milk.)

Gee, I haven't been to a Kwik Trip in years! They used to have more around here.  

What a cool idea - I have never heard of this.

There is a local chain in the Lansing area in Michigan (Quality Dairy) that sold milk in the bags for years. I remember my mom buying it when I was growing up. I'm not sure if they still carry it or not.

We've been buying milk in a bag for ages here in Canada!  

I was going to say, there's a song about Canada that talks about milk in a bag, it's by Five Iron Frenzy (a Christian punk band).  

We don't have that around here, but the pitcher reminds me of the holder my grandmother had when I was growing up. It was a plastic frame with a handle on the side that was sized for a paper 1/2 gallon carton, to make it into a pitcher-like entity. (It also looks like the water pitchers they use in hospitals.)It would be lighter than the other non-waste option - glass bottles. (My nieces and nephews from WI are in town visiting, and they brought 4 bottles of milk with them. My mom has a hard time lifting them because they're so heavy.)  

I remember those carton holders, too. Now the cardboard cartons are missing and so are the "Missing" panels on the cartons are missing, too.  

I am in Florida and have never seen milk in a bag. Now I will say that I very rarely ever go into a gas station to pick up anything, so maybe they have them.  

So... does one pour the milk out of the bag into the pitcher? Or is there a spot to open the bag and then reseal it? As great as this idea is (I love that there's little packaging waste), I like my milk to be sealed in the fridge so it doesn't pick up funky flavors or odors.  

From the picture, it appears there's a dotted line with a picture of scissors, so I'd think you would cut it open.  

That's what it looks like, but that stinks. I don't think it's very hygenic to leave an open container of milk in the fridge.  

My MIL has this all the time... I freaked the first time I saw it. Give me my gallon jug any day. Ok I guess I am a milk snob?

I saw milk in a bag for the first time when I went to visit my friend in Canada. She would buy a box that had two half gallon bags in it.

When I saw this post, I thought - oh a pun by kitchenguy... but no, you were serious! lol I guess this is just what I am used to. Milk is available in Ontario in bags, cartons or plastic bottles... You can buy a bag of milk here for $4-5 (this varies greatly from one side of the country to the other, just ask our friends from the Maritimes), there are 4L so 3 bags & you use the plastic jugs. We go through enough milk here, I've never considered twixit clip-ping the bag shut - it is used long before it could go bad in the fridge! The cartons or bags are available at grocery stores, usually you can only get the jugs in my area from convenience stores...  

My Canadian transplant friends had quite a time getting used to it. The native Canucks say it's more environmentally friendly.

Brooks: kwest for kwik trip's bagged milk ends with moo-ving realization.

Kwik Trip is discontinuing bagged milk.

Which is unfair, because some of us just learned that milk in a bag is a thing . Now we'll never know whether we were supposed to drink it or play cornhole with it.

Milk in a bag was beloved by a large swath of Canada, Wisconsin and select Minnesotans. By May, it will vanish from the milk crates in the bottom of the refrigerated cases in the gas stations. But after four decades of production, Kwik Trip says it no longer makes fiscal sense to keep bagging milk in a milk carton world.

Which left me very little time to grab a bag of milk. The thing I never knew I wanted until I couldn't have it.

My kwest for a Kwik bag o' milk led me to the Kwik Trip just off the interstate in Plymouth. Honestly, is there anything Plymouth doesn't have?

Since there's no use crying over bagged milk, let's celebrate what we had. It was cheap, it was convenient, it used less plastic than a jug and it was jiggly and fun. You will be missed, milk bag.

Why bag the milk? According to a deep dive the CBC took on the topic , the practice began half a century ago, when plastic was pricier and Canada was transitioning to the metric system. It was a lot easier to change a one-quart bag of milk to 1.3-liters than to retrofit an entire assembly line for resized milk jugs or cartons.

All you needed with a milk bag was a milk jug. Some Kwik Trips may still have them in stock. Do not just stab the bag of milk with a straw like a giant Capri-Sun . The Canadians have posted helpful how-to instructions online. Thank you kindly, Canada.

And in conclusion, would anyone like a bag of milk? I forgot to pick up a jug and now it's just rolling around my refrigerator like a Shmoo .
