Virginia Hunting Terrain and Wildlife Habitat

The state of Virginia offers something special for everyone!  Over 30% of the state is used in agriculture, so no doubt there is plenty for the native wildlife to eat, as well!  There is trophy deer hunting in VA from the sea to the mountains!

Virginia Hunting Areas and Regions

The Coastal Plain, bordered by the Chesapeake Bay, is rich waterfowl hunting area because it is rich in marshlands.  Between Fairfax and Fredericksburg, VA there are some good duck hunting hotspots.

The Piedmont Area is rich and fertile and this is where the majority of the farming is done in the state.  Tomatoes, soy, peanuts and tobacco are a few of the crops produced.  There are even a few wineries and vineyards, but those are in the mountain areas.  Deer, turkey and duck hunting opportunities are found in this area.

The Blue Ridge and the Valley & Ridge areas are the hot spots for whitetail deer, bear, turkey and even elk.  The Blue Ridge Mountains are truly a breathtaking sight!  This part of the country draws many visitors, particularly during the autumn months when the mountains are alight with fall foliage colors.  What a great time to get in the woods and scout out a perfect spot!

The far west of Virginia is the Appalachian Plateau.  This, too, offers some great hunting opportunity for a variety of game.

Virginia Hunting License and Regulations

For most Virginians, hunting is a long held and sacred tradition.  Virginia has welcoming policies for hunters to enjoy the state’s resources.  However, there has been many years of game management and development of the state’s wildlife management areas for public hunting.  Virginia is a big proponent of youth and apprentice hunting, with a goal of keeping the tradition alive and preserving wildlife for future generations.   In-depth research can be conducted at Virginia Dept of Game and Inland Fisheries website.

The Whitetail Deer season kicks off with a youth hunt in late September, followed by archery season.  Different area have regulations regarding bag limits and early and late season, and which counties allow gun hunts.  Our featured VA Hunting Guides will make sure you are set to be within the law.

Bear hunting is on the rise in Virginia – but this is a no-bate state.  Hunting is only allowed in designated areas around the Blue Ridge Mountain Range.  Our featured VA hunting guides will know the hunting method used, typically spot and stalk, as well as the correct seasons and bag limits.

Spring and fall turkey are available in Virginia.  The spring is a fantastic time to take to the woods in pursuit of a big gobbler!

Virginia Hunting Tidbits

Types of Hunts we Provide at Monquin Creek Outdoors

Turkey hunts.

Monquin Creek offers some of the most superior turkey hunting in Virginia. We have access to six counties across the state and over 25,000 acres, providing ample opportunity for our clients to be successful on a spring or fall turkey hunt. Our guides have more than 30 years of combined experience calling in longbeards and gobblers in both the spring and the fall.

The landscape for turkey hunting varies, ranging from farms, hills, pastures, and along rivers, to large timber pines and cutovers. Our land management practices are strategically implemented across these properties to provide nutrition for a healthy population of turkeys. These food plots typically consist of corn, milo, clover, oats, wheat, and rye.

Waterfowl Hunts

Monquin Creek proudly offers waterfowl hunting services in Virginia.

Our Virginia waterfowl season begins in April when we start planting food sources for the winter migration of waterfowl. Food sources include corn, soybeans, Japanese millet, and milo. Monquin Creek also establishes wood duck houses around the property to assist in raising young wood ducks. These wood duck houses are also used as an educational resource for youth.

As conservation stewards, we aim to do our part to help the waterfowl population thrive by engaging in trapping efforts of various furbearers and other waterfowl predators ahead of the season to help ducklings survive. Come September, we begin scouting and observing the migration of ducks, geese, and swans.

Duck Hunting

Our Virginia duck hunts primarily consist of marshes, rivers, ponds, creeks, and field impoundments. Hunters can take a variety of species of ducks including pintail, redhead, canvasback, widgeon, gadwalls, shoveler, green-wing teal, blue-wing teal, black duck, mallard, wood duck, divers (including bluebill), and ringed-necks.

On our Pamukey River waterfowl hunts, hunters have a chance to harvest a variety of waterfowl out of strategically positioned duck blinds, including wood ducks, widgeon, pintails, and gadwalls. We also have pit blinds established for goose hunts. Other types of divers and puddle ducks can be hunted in different locations that we have reserved for our hunters.

guided hunting trips virginia

In Virginia, we primarily provide hunts on large agriculture fields and field impoundments. Virginia currently issues a limited number of permits per year which will need to be drawn by the hunter. Check the Virginia Department of Wildlife’s website for further information.

Goose Hunts

Monquin Creek offers goose hunts in Virginia beginning in September with the September resident goose season. You will have the opportunity to hunt farm ponds and first-cut corn fields, along with access to local golf courses to help control geese populations. The winter migration of Canadian geese arrives in late October and typically lasts until March. We have Canada geese that roost on our properties and feed on our agriculture fields every year, which provides great opportunities for corporate events or large hunting groups to hunt together.

Whitetail Hunts

Monquin Creek Outfitters offers some of the best whitetail deer hunting in the state of Virginia. We pursue mature whitetail deer that average 3 years or older and score 130 or better.

We ensure quality deer hunts by monitoring trail cameras year-round for predators and deer herd populations. Our land management practices include strategically placing food plots across our properties to include corn, milo, clover, oats, wheat, and rye.

To avoid pressuring deer populations for their continued health and the success of our clients, we have established deer sanctuaries on all our properties.

Additionally, tree stands are strategically placed to take advantage of the deer movement and wind direction for every hunt.

Working with our partners, Monquin Creek has been under the QDMA program for more than 15 years. We have also worked with the Virginia Department of Wildlife and the DMAP program in managing herd populations and establishing quality whitetail bucks.

View our deer hunting packages.

In our opinion, there is no better way to kick-off the fall hunting season than with an action-packed day of hunting doves! Our dove hunts take place in a variety of favored dove habitats and provide a thrilling experience for our hunters. Our dove hunting packages are a great opportunity to invite friends and family to dove hunt with you for a memorable and exciting day of hunting.

Rabbit Hunts

We recognize that our clients’ rabbit hunting interests vary, as some may have dogs of their own while others prefer to have trained dogs and a guide provided. While we attempt to accommodate the interests of our clients based on the packages listed below, please contact us if you have further questions.

Upland Bird Hunts

Our partners—Cumberland Estate and Preserve at Dundee—offer some of the best upland bird preserve hunting opportunities in Central Virginia. Additionally, Monquin Creek now offers wild quail and woodcock hunts on our properties. On thousands of acres of well-managed wildlife habitat with well-trained dogs, Monquin Creek and our partners seek to offer successful hunts for diverse levels of expertise in upland bird hunting.

Monquin Creek’s woodcock and quail hunting opportunities are not on a preserve. Monquin Creek guides hunts for wild, federally regulated, migratory birds. Please review the information below:

* Please note: ALL hunters who plan to hunt migratory birds (including dove and woodcock) must be registered with the Virginia Harvest Information Program (HIP) in addition to having a valid Virginia hunting license. Please visit DWR’s website to learn more and to register for HIP. Hunters do not need a HIP permit to hunt quail—just a valid Virginia hunting license.

Please view DWR’s 2022-2023 Migratory Gamebird Digest, or visit DWR’s website which includes information about in and out-of-state license requirements, permitting, and migratory bird hunting information.

While many of our eastern properties do hold bears, currently, most of our bear hunts will take place at our Daniel’s Run location in the western part of the state. Typically, we encourage our clients to pursue our fall bear and deer combined package, as bear and deer seasons generally take place at the same time. However, there is an opportunity to book a bear hunt only. Please contact us for more information.

Virginia Hunting Trips

I have often said that it was the canvasback that built this business, and its true we have some world class areas for canvasbacks, but we are really so much more. Over the last 20 plus years we have put together some of most productive and diverse waterfowl hunting in the eastern flyway.

The operation at a closer look

Potomac river.

We have many private blinds on the Tidal Potomac River mainly in the Woodbridge area. Over the years we have worked really hard in positioning them to take advantage  of the feeding habits, weather patterns, wind direction, tide conditions, migration patterns, refuge impoundments and the kitchen sink. The Potomac has a variety ducks that migrate there every year. We hunt shallow bays near the refuge impoundments and the larger creeks for mallards, black ducks, pintails, gadwalls, ring necks, and widgeon. When it gets colder we move to our big water blinds to target canvasbacks, redheads, and blackheads (Chesapeake term for lesser scaup) and greater scaup. But when it freezes then it all comes to the big water blinds. And of course the bonus is we take Canada geese on a lot of our duck hunts. Our blinds are fixed stationary blinds and can accommodate up to 5 shooters comfortably, 6 shooters possibly. If you have more than that in your group we can run multiple blinds.

Our Inland Swamps and Ponds

Our inland areas are where we do a lot of our early season hunts.  During that time we have a lot of wood ducks, teal, and some resident mallards, and black ducks. Then there is always a smattering of gadwall as well. As we start getting into the  migration and colder weather the mallards and black ducks start to pour in. The ponds consistently produce Canada geese and some will cough up both geese and ducks.  These areas are well off the beaten path, but access into our blinds is very user friendly. We like to limit our puddle duck hunts in these areas to no more than 4 hunters per blind. Our blinds in these areas will be either stationary box blinds or permanently fixed A-frame blinds.

Field Goose Hunts

Most of our field goose hunts occur in central Virginia, Our farms are in the counties of Orange, Fauquier, and Culpeper.  Some of my most memorable hunts have been during the evening while a full moon hangs over the field with big flocks of Canadas in route to our field against the back drop of the rolling hills of the piedmont. Simply awesome! We do these hunts from A-frames or layout blinds According to our clients mobility.

Pick Your Hunt

We start our season on September 1. During that month we target early Canada geese on both water and in the field. Our water hunts are primarily on the Potomac and are very consistent; while our field and pond hunts take place at our farms in the central part of the state. We target both teal and geese the last half of the month. Teal hunting is all about timing if we time it right then its awesome, if we don‘t then the poor geese take the beating. The 4-day October season is all about wood ducks and teal in our swamps. It doesn’t get any better than our setup we have at Big Tree. All I’ll say is that you better bring your A game, because when they turn the corner into the slough they are going to be right in your face! November is all about hitting the birds that are staging here as they migrate through. We run a combination of hunts during thIs time. We‘ll continue to pound the swamps for wood ducks and teal, the only difference now is that the mallards  and black ducks will be joining in. Because our swamps are loaded with food we pull a lot of ducks into these areas. This is also when we turn our attention to the blinds on the Potomac that are positioned around the refuge impoundments. We run traffic on these birds as they as they access these ponds. They are mostly mallards, black ducks, and gadwall. It's this part of the season when we will take a lot of Canada’s while duck hunting provided Canada's are in season. December through January is when it's all in play, This is usually when we get our first big push of Canada geese. As they stage on our farms we get after the field hunting. As long as we don‘t get a major freeze  the swamps are fat with fat mallards and black ducks. Back on the river we are utilizing our stationary blinds or setting our 28-foot pontoon floater and running a massive spread for gadwall, widgeon, redheads, ring-necks, black-heads, and of course cans. Everything being equal and we had enough cold up north all of our birds should be in town, at that point all we need is some good nasty local weather to get them up and moving.  At this point in the season we run both morning and afternoon trips. A cloudy windy afternoon can be magical for the big three divers, and our afternoon hunts are very convenient for our local folks to get off work early to do some gunning. If we get ice, well it's game over, it all comes to our big water blinds at that point. This has been our MO for the past 20 plus years and it has served our clients well.

Wesley was very helpful in planning our excursion, honing in on what we specifically wanted, to make the experience fun and memorable. He partnered us with Preston, who was in close contact leading up to the event, ensuring he met the needs of what we wanted, from what kind of fishing we wanted to do, to dietary needs for lunch planning.

We got to fish, Wes did the rest. From changing lures when necessary depending on what they’re biting to feeding us a great lunch on the river. He really catered to our group the whole way. We’re already booking more trips for bird hunting as well as fishing. Looking forward to our next adventure with Wesley Hodges!

If I could give this more than 5 stars I would. It’s indescribable what a Wes Hodges Guiding and Lodging experience is like. From the moment you plan the trip and even after you leave, Wes and his team personally curates your trip to fit you. It’s so much more than the fishing. No matter what level you’re on, there’s something to be learned from Wes, whether it’s about casting, technique, or life.

Booked the trip for my 40th birthday, had never tried fly fishing and Wes looked like the guy to teach me! Ended up that Wes had an emergency the morning of our trip but was very communicative and managed to get us another guide, Brad, who was awesome and patient, despite my lack of fly fishing skills. Had an amazing time and caught a bunch of small mouth! Would go again in a heartbeat.

My wife and I had a tremendous time with Wes. Very knowledgeable about the river, patient and personable. We're both beginners to fly fishing and Wes is a great teacher and guide. We'll go again and can't wait to bring the rest of the family. Highly recommend. Lunch on the water was top shelf.

Wes’s upland bird hunting experiences are second to none. He addresses every detail from scouting out the best locations and covers to preparing delicious lunches in the field. His dogs are a pleasure to watch work and hunt with. I highly recommend Wes for your next bird hunting excursion.

We booked a float trip with Wes & I asked him to instruct my daughter & make her fall in love with fishing. Mission accomplished! Wes was professional, personable, knowledgeable & fun. We caught many smallmouth and had a ball. Lunch was fabulous and I highly recommend Wes for your next trip. Now, out to purchase fishing supplies for my daughter, thanks to Wes!!!

Outstanding from start to finish!! Wes and Preston worked tirelessly to provide us with everything we needed to have a great time and an incredible experience!! We had 4 guys with different skill levels in our party, and both guides tailored their feedback to each of our unique needs. In addition, they provided us with top level equipment to keep us comfortable and a nice lunch break. I would recommend this company to anyone!!

On this our first ever upland bird hunting trip, my son and I could not have hoped for a better guide! Wes Hodges is the real deal! Incredibly experienced and incredibly knowledgeable and a pleasure to spend time with. I highly recommend Wesley Hodges Fly Fishing and Bird Hunting. We’ll be back for sure.

Our guide Preston Austin made all the difference. This was my second Fly Fishing trip and I had yet to catch anything. That would soon change. Preston informed, instructed, assisted and encouraged throughout the day. From the flies and their configuration on the line to technique and spotting, our success was directly linked to his significant fishing acumen. Add to that a fun spirit, a focus and interest in us and a nice lunch with beautiful surroundings, we could not have had a better day.

Thank you Wes Hodges for an awesome two day fly fishing adventure on the New and James Rivers of VA. Wes is a top notch professional who knows the craft of teaching a challenging skill well. This is my second time fly fishing with Wes and I look forward to many adventures in the future. The accommodations Wes has built for clients on his property are awesome and he's a friendly host with superb cooking capabilities.

An Oklahoma tourist says he faces 12 years in prison in the Caribbean after he mistakenly left 4 bullets from a hunting trip in his carry-on duffel bag

  • Ryan Watson was on vacation when he was charged with illegally carrying ammo into Turks and Caicos.
  • He and his wife, Valerie, say the four bullets in their duffel bag were unknowingly left there from a hunting trip.
  • Watson now faces 12 years in prison, alongside several US tourists charged for similar offenses.

Insider Today

An Oklahoma man traveling with his wife in the Caribbean territory of Turks and Caicos faces 12 years in prison after four rounds of ammunition were found in his luggage.

Ryan and Valerie Watson arrived in Turks and Caicos earlier this month to celebrate his 40th birthday with several other couples, their families said in a GoFundMe. NBC Boston reported that the Watsons arrived on April 7.

But the pair, who have two young children, were arrested in the self-governed British territory after airport security found the four bullets in their carry-on duffel bag.

Their families' GoFundMe said the ammo had been left in the bag unintentionally, and was from a prior deer hunting trip.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for white-tailed deer, and I recognized them, and I thought: 'Oh, what a mistake.' I had no idea that they were in there," Ryan Watson told NBC News.

Valerie Watson was released from the charges on Tuesday and flew back to Oklahoma to reunite with her children.

But her husband remains in Turks and Caicos, and was granted $15,000 bail the day after by the local supreme court, according to a police statement.

He now faces 12 years in prison, which is the minimum custodial sentence for bringing firearms or ammunition into Turks and Caicos.

Ryan Watson must stay on the islands and report twice a week to a local police station while waiting for his hearing, which is set for June 7.

Meanwhile, his family is trying to raise $300,000 for his legal fees and housing in the Caribbean.

"Isolated from their family, friends, and children, they face mounting legal fees, living expenses, and the overwhelming stress of their situation," their GoFundMe reads. "The emotional and financial toll is immense, and they are at risk of losing everything."

"We were trying to pack board shorts and flip flops," Valerie Watson told CBS News . "Packing ammunition was not at all our intent."

The Watsons did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider through their GoFundMe.

Eight US tourists prosecuted since February

It is illegal to bring firearms or ammunition into Turks and Caicos, and penalties apply regardless of the offender's status or country of origin, according to the local attorney general's chambers.

Several tourists caught under this law were previously let off with just a fine, while at least one was given a prison sentence under the minimum limit.

But in February, a court of appeal ordered that all offenders be given at least the minimum sentence of 12 years in prison.

At least eight tourists from the US have since been prosecuted under this rule, per the attorney general's chambers.

Another American tourist, 31-year-old Tyler Wenrich , was charged on Tuesday with possessing ammunition after he arrived in Turks and Caicos on a cruise ship, according to local police.

"While going through a security checkpoint, it was discovered Mr Wenrich allegedly had ammunition in his possession," a police statement said.

Amid the recent spate of tourist arrests, the US State Department published a September advisory warning US citizens that it wouldn't be able to secure their release if they brought firearms and ammo into Turks and Caicos.

"We strongly encourage you to carefully check your luggage for stray ammunition or forgotten weapons before departing for TCI," the advisory said.

The US State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider.

Tourism is a key revenue for Turks and Caicos, and in 2019 provided about $787 million, or 65% of the island's GDP, to the territory, per a 2023 report by the Commonwealth Chamber of Commerce.

The Caribbean archipelago is a popular port of call for US cruise ships, and this year has seen a 127% jump in tourist arrivals — the largest increase in the world — compared to 2019, the United Nations World Tourism Organization said in February.
