On Board Mexico's All-you-can-drink Tequila Train

Hop aboard the Jose Cuervo Express for an unforgettable experience.

cuervo express tequila tour

No, it’s not just legend: The tequila train, formally known as the  Jose Cuervo Express , is the only old-style train in all of Mexico, and it travels between the western Mexico city of Guadalajara and the community of Tequila, which the  Mexican Secretariat of Tourism has called a Pueblo Mágico (or Magic Town) .

Step onto the vintage vehicle and back in time for a glamorous day of cocktails by train car. When you ride the Jose Cuervo Express, you'll enjoy tequila tastings, agave harvesting, and good, old-fashioned sightseeing. You'll also be treated to Mexican snacks and Jose Cuervo tequila cocktails in addition to onboard entertainment like Loteria (Mexican bingo).

All riders receive access to  Centro Cultural Juan Beckmann Gallardo , a tour of Jose Cuervo’s La Rojeña distillery (the oldest in Latin America), and free time in the town of Tequila. Jose Cuervo has been producing tequila at La Rojeña for over 250 years since Jose María Guadalupe de Cuervo began selling the first Vino Mezcal de Tequila de Jose Cuervo after the King of Spain granted him a charter to commercially produce the spirit.

The train features four different wagons — Express, Premium Plus, Diamond, and Elite — each offering its own experience. For instance, the Diamond Wagon evokes the old-school allure of train travel with leather and wood accents and an embossed ceiling.

The most impressive, however, is the Elite Wagon , a luxurious wood-paneled car with floor-to-ceiling windows and well-crafted, comfortable spaces from which to watch the scenery fly by, tequila in hand. The Elite experience comes with a line of custom cocktails, as well as an open bar stocked with Jose Cuervo spirits like the brand's crown jewel, small batch Reserva de la Familia Platino, Reposado, and Extra Añejo tequilas.

If that’s not enough indulgence, the trip also includes a three-glass educational tasting led by a tequila expert, live mariachi music, and a tour of the Reserva de la Familia private cellar.

The website promises you “will be dazzled by the spectacular view offered by the [Elite] wagon’s large windows to admire the impressive beauty of the landscape.”

The 11-hour journey starts at 9 a.m. in Guadalajara — and you can choose from either a morning or sunset train experience, with the other leg of the journey by bus.

Trips start from $130 for the Express wagon, which is also the only class that allows children. Tickets for kids 6 years old and over are $107 per person, while kids 5 and under travel for free without an assigned seat.

Aboard the Tequila Train: Review of the Jose Cuervo Express

cuervo express tequila tour

Aboard the Jose Cuervo Express, tequila never stops flowing. The elegant train ride between Guadalajara and Tequila is just part of a full-day and unforgettable adventure in the cradle of Tequila.

Practical Details

  • This unique experience is offered by Jose Cuervo Tequila, one of the leading Tequila brands in Mexico and beyond. It’s the only tequila train in Mexico, since the Herradura Express didn’t emerge from the pandemic.
  • The train runs every Saturday, with start and endpoint in the capital of Jalisco, Guadalajara. Destination is Tequila, a charming town and birthplace of the namesake spirit. Tequila is protected by a Denomination of Origin, meaning it can only be produced in this region.
  • The train ride is part of an 11-hour journey through Jalisco. The spirit is served non-stop and in all shapes, from delicious cocktails to an actual tequila tasting.
  • Two itineraries to pick from set the course of the day. On the Sunrise Itinerary, you board the train in the morning for the outbound journey to Tequila. The Sunset Itinerary includes the train in the afternoon for the return journey to Guadalajara. On both itineraries, the other leg is traveled by bus. We picked the Sunset Itinerary and are happy we did – more on why below.
  • The train has four types of wagons: Express, Premium Plus, Diamond and Elite. Each wagon comes with different perks and price tags. Starting prices are $2,880 MXN or 145 USD per person. We paid just a little extra for the Premium Plus experience, which was worth it.

cuervo express tequila tour

Since we picked the Sunset Itinerary, we were making the outbound trip to Tequila by bus. This was probably the only time on the tour we didn’t have a tequila drink in hand. Coffee and pastries are served to the excited crowd prior to the 9 AM bus departure. By this time on the Sunrise Itinerary, you would be tasting straight tequila. As the bus gets closer to Tequila, blue agaves start to dominate the quintessential Mexican landscape.

cuervo express tequila tour

We might have postponed the start of the tequila fountain, but not for long. Upon getting off the bus, everybody receives a personal tequila bottle, refills included.

cuervo express tequila tour

The Sunset Itinerary begins in the scenic agave fields, with a breakfast staple from Jalisco. The torta ahogada is exactly what the stomach needs to brace for a bottomless flow of tequila.

cuervo express tequila tour

Breakfast is followed by an agave harvesting demonstration. A jimador shows off the skill and strength that goes into harvesting blue agave, the base ingredient of tequila.

The bus continues to the heart of Tequila town, where Fabrica La Rojeña is located. In addition to La Rojeña distillery, the stunning Jose Cuervo estate houses an art gallery and an exclusive tequila cave. Cuervos or black ravens are found throughout the estate as a reference to the family name.

cuervo express tequila tour

The guided tour of the distillery and tequila cave is followed by of course, more tequila. We got to savor delicious mango and tamarindo margaritas from La Rojeña’s Margarita Bar.

cuervo express tequila tour

The town of Tequila is an attraction in its own right, so we were happy with some free time to stroll the colorful streets. It’s a lively town full of restaurants, hotels and several other tequila houses. Tour busses shaped like tequila barrels and bottles roam the streets, adding to the ambience of Disneyland for grown-ups. Nonetheless, Tequila manages to keep the feel of an authentic Mexican Pueblo Mágico.

We weren’t sure what to expect from the next activity, since Mexican Show has the potential to be cheesy. As most travelers on the Jose Cuervo Express are Mexican and well-versed in the art of traditional party atmosphere, the bar was set high. Everybody was equally impressed with the performance of traditional music and dance. The frozen margaritas only add to the festive experience.

cuervo express tequila tour

Yet the best part of the day was still upon us, another advantage of the Sunset Itinerary. We hopped on the Jose Express just in time for golden hour aboard the train.

cuervo express tequila tour

The journey on the vintage train car is the highlight of a fantastic day. Riding in the Premium Plus wagon, we had our pick of elegant private booths. In addition to the tequila tasting led by an expert, a variety of delicious tequila cocktails and snacks are served.

cuervo express tequila tour

The Jose Cuervo Express is definitely a splurge, but worth every penny. The full day of authentic activities and never-ending flow of tequila ensure you get bang for your buck. It was one of our favorite experiences while living in Mexico.

The rhythmic motion and the gentle sway of the carriages created a soothing ambiance, setting the stage for the adventure ahead. We embarked on the Jose Cuervo Express, ready to immerse ourselves in the vibrant culture and rich heritage of Tequila.

The “Sunset Experience”: From Guadalajara to Tequila

Our journey began with the “sunset experience,” where we traveled from Guadalajara to Tequila by motor coach. The scenic route offered breathtaking vistas of rolling hills and fields of agave plants stretching as far as the eye could see. It was as if nature itself was welcoming us to the land where Tequila comes to life.

Arriving in Tequila: Agave Fields and the Spirit of Tradition

Stepping off the motor coach, we were immediately greeted by the unmistakable aroma of agave, a scent that permeates the air and tells the tale of Tequila’s rich heritage. Our first stop was the Agave Landscape and Ancient Industrial Facilities of Tequila, where we witnessed the captivating “jima” process—an agave harvesting demonstration. It was a mesmerizing sight, as skilled workers showcased the artistry and precision required to harvest this precious plant. We couldn’t help but be awestruck by the dedication and expertise involved in creating the foundation of Tequila.

Discovering La Rojeña: The Heart of Tequila

Our next destination was Destileria La Rojeña, the oldest distillery factory in Latin America and the home of Jose Cuervo tequila. As soon as we entered, the echoes of long-standing customs surrounded us, transporting us back in time. Knowledgeable experts guided us through the distillery, sharing captivating stories about the art of tequila production. From the agave fields to the aging barrels, every step of the process was meticulously explained, deepening our appreciation for this iconic spirit. It was here that we truly understood the passion and craftsmanship that goes into every bottle of Jose Cuervo tequila.

Leaving La Rojeña behind, we found ourselves in the Magical Town of Tequila, a place where history and charm intertwine. Walking through the streets felt like stepping into a living postcard, with vibrant buildings displaying the unique architectural style of the region. The bustling markets invited us to explore, offering a treasure trove of handcrafted goods and cultural gems. We couldn’t resist bringing home a piece of Tequila’s spirit, and we found ourselves enchanted by the stories behind each artisanal creation.

A Gastronomic Delight: Mexican Snacks and Tequila Cocktails

As we continued our Tequila adventure, we found ourselves in the Express Wagon, where we were treated to a delightful assortment of Mexican snacks and tequila cocktails prepared with Jose Cuervo Especial Reposado and Tradicional Plata. The flavors danced on our tongues, each bite and sip revealing the intricate blend of ingredients and the skill of the mixologists. It was a celebration of Mexican cuisine and the perfect accompaniment to the journey we were undertaking.

Immersing in Mexican Culture: Music, Dance, and the Spirit of Tequila

One of the highlights of our Tequila adventure was the captivating Mexican show. The rhythmic beats of the mariachi band and the graceful movements of the folkloric dancers filled the air with an electrifying energy. The performers’ enthusiasm and passion for what they were doing swept us off our feet. It was a testament to the rich heritage and soul of Tequila, an experience that touched our hearts and connected us to the essence of Mexico.

Reflecting on this extraordinary experience, we are filled with gratitude for the opportunity to delve into the rich tapestry of Tequila’s culture and history. The Jose Cuervo Express provided a seamless and immersive journey, allowing us to connect with the essence of this remarkable destination. From the captivating landscapes to the flavors that delighted our taste buds, every moment was infused with a sense of discovery and wonder.

If you’re ready to embark on your own Tequila adventure, I recommend that you to book your tickets for the Train Tequila José Cuervo Express on Expedia for the best deal! Immerse yourself in the vibrant culture, indulge in authentic flavors, and explore the enchanting Magical Town of Tequila. This journey will take you on a path of discovery, deepening your understanding and appreciation of the traditions that make Tequila truly exceptional.

Mezcal’s production involves roasting agave hearts in underground pits, lending it a smoky and earthy character, whereas Tequila is typically milder due to its use of modern ovens.

The crafting of Mezcal involves a deeply traditional approach, where agave hearts are roasted in earthen pits lined with volcanic rocks, imparting a distinct smoky and earthy quality to the final spirit. Tequila, on the other hand, often employs modern ovens for agave cooking, resulting in a comparatively milder flavor profile. This divergence in cooking methods adds an intriguing layer to the Mezcal vs Tequila comparison .

How to Take The Jose Cuervo Tequila Express Train to the Magical Town of Tequila, Mexico

I love a great Day Trip - and I love a great tequila! About an hour outside of Guadalajara , Mexico in Jalisco is the magical town (literally, Pueblo Mágico is an official designation from the Mexican Government) of Tequila, Mexico. The  birthplace of Tequila is vibrant, with cobble stone lined streets, and surrounded by stunning agave fields with views of Volcán de Tequila in the distance. Mundo Cuervo's train tour takes you on an ultimate day of drinking, learning about the origins of tequila, and experiencing a true Mexican tradition. When you're in Jalisco, it's great to see in a day - but also has a few amazing hotel offerings and restaurants if you want to stay and enjoy for a bit longer.

Want to see more about Guadalajara? Read our full Travel Guide here .

The Basics:

The Jose Cuervo Express is a full day experience that will take you from the center of Guadalajara on a beautiful, vintage train out to the town of Tequila and your ticket price includes the entire experience - the train ride, guided tequila tastings, meals, a tour of the factory and agave fields, and the bus back to the city.

A standard-class ticket runs $119 for the experience.

The higher-end Premium Plus Cabin runs around $141 for a ticket, and the highest class Diamond Wagon is $157 per person. Tickets can be purchased from Jose Cuervo, or directly through TripAdvisor .

All aboard! Inside the beautiful Diamond Class wagon

cuervo express tequila tour

Our first tequila of the day - at 9:30am.

The Tequila Express departs every Saturday at 9:00am from Guadalajara Station. Arrive 30 minutes to an hour early to check in, and the waiting area has coffee, hot chocolate, and light breakfast snacks of bread and fruit cups. Then you head to the train and find your assigned cabin and seat.

The Train Ride:

The first time I took a train in Europe, I got to the station naively envisioning a James Bond style, wooden-lined vintage train experience. I was not exactly a clean, modern... train. The Jose Cuervo express is by far the closet we have ever come to finally having that vintage train experience. The seats are arranged in parties of four, and the ride lasts around 90 minutes. We were in the standard class cabin, and the team came around often with water and mixed tequila drinks, and big baskets of chicken and cheese tamales, as well as other snack skewers. Then took us through a couple of guided tequila tastings. The ride takes you out through the countryside and through endless fields of blue agave.

The higher class cabins have more extensive plated meals and more liquor and tequila options to choose from. The Diamond cabin has more expansive couch and table seating with a full bar.

La Rojeña Tour:

After arriving to the own of Tequila, a lux golf cart takes you over to the working Jose Cuervo factory La R ojeña for a tour of the entire process - from roasted of the agave piñas to the distilling process and barrel storage. The distillery is actually one of the oldest in the Americas and has been producing tequila for over 250 years. You'll get to stroll through, see how the tequila making process works, and what makes them so good at what they do.

The Jimadors:

While you are in the agave fields, a local Jimador (a Mexican agave farmer) demonstrates how they cut and harvest the agaves in preparation for roasting and distilling. He makes it look easy, but when we tried to cut a few ourselves, you find out how difficult and physical the job really is.

Mexico’s All-You-Can-Drink Luxury Tequila Train Is Back On Track — And Selling Out Fast For 2021

Tickets are selling fast for the Jose Cuervo Express, back on track for 2021.

After taking a pandemic pause last year, the famous Jose Cuervo Express , Mexico’s luxury tequila train, is back on track and accepting reservations for 2021.

This year’s tickets are being snapped up quickly, due to a combination of pent-up demand and diminished capacity. The train is only operating every other Saturday, with a limited number of available tickets to comply with government restrictions.

The tequila train experience is operated by Jose Cuervo, a name synonymous with tequila. In 1758, three quarters of a century before Mexico became an independent republic, King Ferninand VI of Spain bequeathed land to Jose Antonio de Cuervo y Valdes to begin growing agave. Thirty-seven years later, his son, Jose María Guadalupe de Cuervo, began selling the very first Vino Mezcal de Tequila de Jose Cuervo after receiving the first official charter to produce tequila commercially.

The Jose Cuervo Express offers two itineraries. The first, the “sunrise” itinerary, departs Guadalajara at 9 a.m. for two-hour train journey through 40 miles of agave fields to the town of Tequila in the state of Jalisco. By law, real tequila must with blue agave grown in one of five Mexican states — Jalisco, Michoacan, Nayarit, Guanajuato and Tamaulipas.

On board the train, an expert taster guides a tasting of various premium Jose Cuervo tequilas. After disembarking in Tequila, guests tour the Cuervo production facilities, have lunch and take in a Mexican show before ending the afternoon with a demonstration of agave harvesting.

If you prefer to sample tequila at a more respectable hour, the “sunset” itinerary makes a lot more sense. You begin the tour at 9 a.m. at the Cuervo bottling plant with the agave-harvesting demo, and then hit all the elements of the first itinerary but in reverse order. The day winds down with the two-hour train journey and onboard tequila tasting, with the train arriving back in Guadalajara at 8 p.m.

The Diamond wagon offers plus velvet-upholstered sofa and enormous windows for watching the agave fields go by.

Ticket prices range from $116 to $166, depending on which of the four types of train cars you choose. At the lowest end of the price range, three Express passenger wagons have wood-paneled interiors and offer coach seating . The next level up is Premium Plus, which comes with a bar and waiter service. Some of the wood-paneled wagons offer private tables for four, while others offer lounge seating.

The two top tiers offer next-level luxury. The new Elite wagons feature comfortable couches, enormous windows for watching the Mexican countryside roll by, and multiple rooms with both table and lounge seating as well as a dedicated open bar. Finally, the Diamond wagon is the most exclusive on the Jose Cuervo Express, with velvet curved sofas, a beautiful embossed roof and various rooms, including a dedicated bar service and waiters.

Travelers interested in hopping aboard the famed tequila train should move quickly to secure tickets. As of today, the train is sold out into mid June.

Best Places To Stay In Jalisco

The state of Jalisco has so much variety with a lot to offer. Everything from beach towns, mountains, forests, jungles, big cities, small towns and pueblo mágicos.

Here are the best places to stay in Jalisco – covering the variety of experiences this beautiful state can give you.

📍 GUADALAJARA: The third largest metropolitan area in Mexico, Guadalajara (GDL) is a big city but much slower paced than Mexico City. GDL has a ton of cool bars, clubs, restaurants and malls. I’ll be completely honest, I enjoy Mexico City a lot more than GDL. However, I still think it’s a cool place to visit and there are a ton of cool areas near GDL for day trips or weekend getaways.

image of vibrant street with colorful flags in Tlaquepaque

It’s also a great destination for bachelorette/bachelor parties or just any group trip. They have trendy restaurants that are great for big groups, fancy clubs, beach clubs, a ton of bars, excursions, resorts, Airbnbs and other smaller towns to visit nearby.

I normally don’t like super touristy towns but PV still feels quite local and traditional to me. The Old Town known as “Zona Romantica” is really charming with its cobblestone streets and beautiful architecture.

➡️ Vallarta Shores Beach Hotel

📍 SAYULITA: As mentioned above, PV is a great hub to get to other smaller towns such as Sayulita. This once sleepy little surf town with mostly local travelers has now become a popular destination for foreigners. I’ll be honest, I miss what it was before. But nonetheless, it’s now a fun place to go with a lot of bars, restaurants and boutique shops.

image of street in the main square in Sayulita

The best way to get to Sayulita is by flying into Puerto Vallarta. The town is about an hour and 15 minutes drive from PV.

image of me on the beach in Sayulita

Pro tip: if you’re looking for a chiller vibe go to San Pancho which is a smaller beach town just 15 minutes away.

➡️ Ximena Hotel Boutique

📍 AJIJIC: You could definitely stay a weekend or a few days in Ajijic but this could also be done as a day trip coming from Guadalajara. This lakeside gem is located an hour away (by driving) from GDL along the shores of the largest lake in Mexico, Lake Chapala. Charming streets, laid-back vibes and beautiful lakeside views make Ajijic a perfect weekend getaway.

image of AJIJIC sign by Lake Chapala

➡️ Casa del Sol Inn

📍 MAZAMITLA: This mountain town Pueblo Mágico is the perfect nature escape. Spend your days in cozy mountain cabins, going on hikes during the day, and just enjoying nature all around you. I stayed at an amazing bubble glamping resort that was such a unique experience. Check out the link below!

I rode 2.5 hours on the back of a motorcycle to Mazamitla from Guadalajara (would not recommend it – too long for me on a motorcycle). If you take a car it shouldn’t take more than 2 hours unless you’re going around traffic hours.

➡️ La Estela Bub ble Glamping

image of bubble glamping in the mountains in Mazamitla

📍 SAN SEBASTIÁN DEL OESTE: Nestled in the Sierra Madre mountains, San Sebastián del Oeste is a quaint colonial pueblo mágico that makes you feel like you’ve taken a journey back in time.

The best way to get to San Sebastian del Oeste is flying into Puerto Vallarta and the drive from there should be less than 2 hours.

Tequila, Jalisco: FAQs

Aside from tequila tours in Jalisco, let’s dive into some common questions about Tequila and Jalisco below.

Is Tequila a city in Mexico?

Tequila is a charming pueblo mágico (magic town) in Jalisco, Mexico. As you can see, they obviously have the best tequila tours in Jalisco being that it is known to be the birthplace of tequila.

image of me walking down a colorful street in Tequila

Is Tequila, Jalisco worth visiting?

Tequila is definitely worth visiting! Indulge in the breathtaking views of agave fields, go on a tequila tour, visit distilleries, try some local food, and enjoy the quaint cobblestone streets in this magical town.

image of guacamole, salsa and limes at a restaurant in Tequila

Where is the swing in Tequila, Jalisco?

The extreme swing is located just 10 minutes outside the town of Tequila.

What is the best month to go to Jalisco?

It really depends on where in Jalisco you plan to go and what you want to experience considering that Jalisco has beaches, mountains, big cities, and small towns. Generally speaking, the rainy season is around June to October. However, I’ve definitely been to Jalisco during this time without it raining but the summer months are really hot so for that reason, I would avoid it. It’s safe to say you’d be good to go around November to May.

Is it safe to travel to Jalisco, Mexico right now?

I’ve traveled to Jalisco several times by myself and I’ve generally felt safe. Is there cartel activity there? Yes. But I’ve traveled all of Mexico solo and with friends and I haven’t had any major issues. I feel like if you aren’t around certain situations or cause any trouble you should be fine.

Just like anywhere else in the world, practice safe measures and always be aware of your surroundings. (Don’t walk alone at night if the area is quite desolate, don’t flash your money or expensive things around, carry only what you need for the day, etc.)
