Hy-Line Cruises and the Steamship Authority: Nantucket’s Lifeline to the Main Land

Nantucket Living

One of our favorite ways to get to and from Nantucket is by way of a ferry. Ease into island time and take in breathtaking ocean views as you make your way across Nantucket Sound and into the heart of Nantucket. When planning your trip, you will find that two main ferry companies offer service to and from the island; the Steamship Authority and Hy-Line Cruises . Both companies offer hour-long fast ferry options from Hyannis, while the Steamship Authority additionally offers a traditional car ferry with a crossing time of just over two hours.

Hy-Line Cruises

Hy-Line Cruises operates two boats on their Hyannis to Nantucket route, the Grey Lady and Grey Lady IV . The Grey Lady has operated as a year-round ferry since 2003 and features two levels of seating, including an outdoor area on the top level for taking in ocean views as you cross the water. Hy-Line Cruises’ newest ferry acquisition, Grey Lady IV , is a 150’ 3-level boat with two areas of outdoor seating and the new “Captain’s View” – an exclusive seating section inside on the second level. Each ferry has a layout that mixes rows of individual seats with group seating and options with tables. Also equipped with free Wi-Fi, TVs for entertainment, full-service snack bars, and restrooms, a trip on either ferry offers plenty of amenities for your traveling comfort.

Nantucket Ferries Steamship Authority

Steamship Authority

The Steamship Authority provides ferry passage to Nantucket for everything from travelers to vehicles carrying supplies that keep the busy island moving. The ferry that is often used when bringing your vehicle to Nantucket, the M/V Eagle, is commonly referred to as the “car ferry” or the “slow boat.” The lower level of the M/V Eagle is reserved for vehicles that load on one end and depart on the other, while the upper-level features seating for 768 people, including passengers and crew. Rounding out the passenger level are a full-service snack bar, free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, as well as restrooms. For those looking for “fast ferry” service to the island, the M/V Iyanough is the Steamship Authority’s passenger-only option. The 154’ boat carries up to 400 people and has three levels, an outdoor seating area, free Wi-Fi access, and flat-screen TVs throughout the interior. Other amenities on the M/V Iyanough include a snack bar featuring beer, wine, and mixed drinks, as well as a variety of hot and cold menu items to choose from.

The Nantucket ferry schedules change with the seasons. Your best bet for accurate schedules is to check the individual company websites or nantucketferries.com , which is updated with the most current ferry schedule for both the Hy-Line and Steamship.

captiains View hyline nantucket ferry

On the newer Hy-Line ferry, Grey Lady IV, passengers are given the option to upgrade to Captain’s View seating. The Captain’s View upgrade is limited to 32 passengers and allows you to pre-board the ferry and enjoy a designated seating section with the only forward-facing view off the front of the boat.

The Steamship Authority offers eFerry ticketing granting you a way to book your tickets conveniently through your phone.

Regardless of which ferry you choose for your journey to and from Nantucket, be sure to toss a penny overboard as you depart. Local legend has it that if you toss a penny into the harbor as you round iconic Brant Point, you assure a future return to Nantucket.

Located in the Nantucket pier, it sells tickets on the high-speed ferry to the mainland (Hyannis) and also directly to Martha's Vineyard (Oak Bluffs). We were taking the midday ferry to Oak Bluffs ($42 per person), but got there a bit early, so hung around in the Air Conditioned benches until the ferry was ready to board. The boat was pretty empty, so I had the opportunity to stand outside at the stern while the ferry was going at top speed, and it was real enjoyable experience (the air conditioning fans are right there, so you feel the warm air from that on your left, the passing breeze on the right, and a bit of sea spray). The boat can really go, and will take you to Martha's Vineyard in about an hour (cuts the time in half vs taking the normal ferry). It has two levels of passenger seating, with snack bar with alcohol and washrooms in the lower level.

Overall: 3 stars, Captain's View: 2 stars. Basic, at times amazingly pleasant and at times unempoweredly rude ("that's just the way it works") ferry service from Hyannis to Nantucket. Frankly, since I think you don't have many options (perhaps Steamship Authority), I'll primarily review Captain's View here. The best part of this service seems to be the Bloody Mary's and the hilariously detailed bar rules they have (no doubles, one drink/person/visit) which seem to indicate that people party hard on this trip. On our 11am outbound plenty of folks were drinking the Bloodies, which looked pretty good, and a bunch of beers as well. On Captain's View, first I think it's -- unless you're booking really early -- available only when you don't need it, so if you're booking with a short lead-time and it's available, it's almost definitional that you don't need either the early boarding or the nicer seat. On our trip back, the rest of the ferry was no more than half full and Captain's View was packed. Adding a little to that was an off-duty crewman who sat in Captain's View only to be visited by his on-duty buddies having fun looking at SnapChat pictures or such. Adding the ambiance, I suppose, but not in the way you wanted. Captain's View provides two benefits: a nicer seat in the front part of the upper deck which affords, well, the Captain's view (which is nice) and early/priority boarding. The former is nice anytime, the latter can be valuable or useless or, in our particular case, useless when it would have been valuable. We had a party of 3. One person missed the outbound and took a later ferry. Rather than have him deal with that at the time of the outbound, they bounced **all three of us** at the "priority boarding" for Captain's View, requiring us to go back to the ticket office, pay them $5 for a no-show on one of three outbound tickets -- when he had addressed that with them (and they had to notice they were letting him on a later ferry). This bothered me considerably, not even letting, say, the two of us who didn't no-show board on time and defeating half the point of Captain's view.

a ton of empty seats but people don't want to share their row of seats or table so people are made to sit on the floor or steps and crew was completely useless, I was told to sit outside in the rain if I wanted to sit down 32 empty seats inside.

Photo of Laurie I.

I thought the whole experience was really nice. We paid for the close parking and were instructed where to go right away. Then we were asked if we wanted our bags check and we said we were not sure. He said ok, well let me know if you do. Now here they could have said all bags should be checked and that might have been easier, but no big deal.I will say the lady who does the cargo checkin was rather rude (we went to her window by mistake)but other than that it was great. It did run late so we changed our return ticket so if you are tight on time, book a later ferry. Inside the bartender was super sweet

Photo of Gary H.

The cruise was great! Quick loading and they were prompt both going and coming. Nantucket was awesome and worth the money. Things to note: off site parking is available at the transportation center for $17. A free shuttle service is included and is a short 5-10 minute ride. The cruise ship parking area near the boat is $28 and the other lots are $35. Masks are required if inside the boat, but not outside. This is an update to my 5 star review which is now a 1 star review. When our tickets were purchased we had a hard time deciding on our return trip time and the employee told us the tickets could be changed to any time we wanted, no worry, just go to the terminal and they will change the time for us. We changed our time to 2 hours later to stay for dinner. The ticket agent said no problem and printed us new tickets. We were happy and so was the pizza place who received our money. We noticed a charge to our credit card the next morning for $17 from the cruise line. Not once were we told that there would be a charge to change ticket schedules. Not when we booked the cruise or when we changed the time on our return trip. They never asked for our credit card either which means they kept our card on file. BEWARE-fraudulent activity on this ferry company. Can you believe this? Cruise was nice, but this is unacceptable .

We booked a round trip from Hyannis to Nantucket. While waiting for our trip back, I was unable to pull my mask down to simply tell my hearing impaired husband (who relies on lip reading). The attendant, Stephen, told us we would have to exit the building in order to communicate with him. This is against the American disabilities act and against Massachusetts government policy. Will link below. Absolutely ridiculous. Will not EVER recommend this company. Highly disappointed for the $162 we spent on this. https://www.mass.gov/doc/guidance-for-face-masks-in-public-settings/downloadl

The ferry left on time both coming and going. It does move along quite nicely. I would guess about 20-25 knots. It's on the expensive side though at $78 person. My only tip: if it's a busy week, choose the first parking lot you see instead of driving in circles

Photo of Bailee P.

I don't know why they have such bad ratings on yelp! We made our reservations for a day trip to Nantucket the day before. The tickets are expensive for just getting to the island but there really are no other options and demand is high so they could raise the price even higher if they wanted. Definitely get there early to board from Hyannis to find parking (which is also expensive). The staff was friendly and makes sure everyone is wearing a mask which is promising. The way back we tried to get on an earlier ferry because we had already finished dinner, the workers were putting us on the boat when it left the dock. They try really hard to get the standby passengers onto the boat which is very nice of them. They're operating with less passengers on the boat than they usually do which is nice to not be on top of other people.

Photo of Jaimee A.

I wouldn't necessarily call it a cruise ship, more of a ferry. We took Hy-Line Cruises to shuttle us back and forth between Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. For that they do a very good job. The ships are big and air-conditioned. They arrive and depart on time. The bathrooms are very clean. The ship has snack options. This is a safe, clean, reliable way to travel between islands.

Photo of Jon F.

Rude, nasty, ignorant and unhelpful staff care nothing about helping you in any way whatsoever. If Nantucket relied on these dopes as ambassadors the island would be vacant. The rude staff has helped me decide to vacation elsewhere. Use any other way to get to the island as the staff is singularly unhelpful.

Visiting the Islands

What is there to do on the islands.

Both islands offer picturesque beaches and charming towns full of shops, restaurants and points of interest.  Each island has its own lively night life too.  If you’re only there for the day, but want to see it all, then a bus tour is the best way. We have information about each island available on our web site. Click here for Nantucket and here for Martha’s Vineyard . For more information on the islands check out each island’s chamber of commerce web site: Nantucket Island Chamber and  Martha’s Vineyard Chamber.

Is there a tour of the islands available?

There are bus tours available on both islands.  These tours take you all over the island and allow you to see the most in your limited time.  The Martha’s Vineyard tour is a fully narrated tour which takes approximately two and a half hours with a stop in Edgartown. The Nantucket tour is a continuous, fully narrated tour which takes just over an hour.  It covers close to 65% of the island including The Old Mill, Sconset Village with its rose-covered cottages, Low Beach, Sankaty Head Lighthouse, the Nantucket moors and more.  Buy tickets for both tours at the ticket office or call (800) 492-8082 to book your bus tour with your ferry trip.

What if I can’t choose between the two islands?

If you’re having a hard time choosing which island to see, then why not see them both?  Hy-Line is the only provider of an “ Around the Sound ” excursion which departs from Hyannis and allows you to visit both islands in the same day.

With its unspoiled charm and natural beauty, it is easy to see why so many travelers flock there summer after summer. Nantucket is easy to navigate by foot, bike, or car, as it is only fourteen miles long and three and a half miles wide, making it perfect for a day trip or a longer stay.

No matter where you are on the island there are so many things to see and do! With its gorgeous beaches, delicious restaurants and ice cream shops, numerous historical locations, museums, and the fun and interesting stores that line Main Street, Nantucket has a little bit for everyone.

When cruising into Nantucket Harbor you will pass Brant Point Lighthouse, completed in 1759. Many visitors love to take photos of the lighthouse from the boat, or you might choose to walk to this lighthouse which is a very short distance from Hy-Line’s ferry terminal. They say when you leave Nantucket and round Brant Point, throw a penny in the water and it will guarantee your return!

Martha’s Vineyard: Artsy Culture with New England Charm

hy line cruises nantucket office

Only an hour away on  Hy-Line’s high-speed ferry , Martha’s Vineyard is twice the size of her sister island, Nantucket, at almost 100 square miles. Where Nantucket is mostly flat and sandy, Martha’s Vineyard has woods, fields, hillsides, and the breathtaking Aquinnah Cliffs. Along with its natural beauty, the island also boasts delicious, fresh seafood, hundreds of great retail shops, farmers markets, breathtaking beaches, and a friendly island culture.

Martha’s Vineyard is a beautiful island, consisting of six towns with magnificent coastline. The six towns of the island retain their own character and style. The “down island” towns of Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, and Edgartown are shopping havens with attractions and restaurants to suit every taste. The “up island” towns of Menemsha, Chilmark, and Aquinnah are quaint, quiet places reminiscent of the island’s maritime past.

To get a good sense of the island, you can either take a bus tour of each town from one of the many operators in Oak Bluffs or rent a car or bike for a little more flexibility. If this isn’t your speed, don’t worry; there is plenty to do within a short walking distance from the boat. Oak Bluffs offers colorful gingerbread cottages, the tabernacle of Camp Meeting Association, the serenity of Ocean Park with views of the Atlantic Ocean, and a busy main street full of restaurants, ice cream and candy stores, and shops full of anything you could possibly want or need. The town is also home to the Flying Horses Carousel, the oldest working platform carousel in the country, which is a must-see. Try your luck at grabbing the brass ring for a free ride!

Martha’s Vineyard is a bustling island with so much to offer—you’re sure to love your time there.

Hyannis: Centrally Located Near the Cape’s Best Things to Do

Hyannis has been Hy-Line’s home since 1962 when they first started as a sightseeing boat operating  Hyannis Harbor Tours , out past the Kennedy Compound in Hyannisport. These sightseeing trips still operate today, highlighting the history of local area landmarks with live commentary. There’s a little more fun in the summer with specialty trips such as sunset cocktail cruises, ice cream floats, and musical bingo.

Also at the Ocean Street Dock are  Cape Cod Fishing Trips  on Nantucket Sound. Whether you’re a novice or a hearty fisherman, Hy-Line has trips for everyone. Manned by their helpful and attentive crew, both fishing vessels are Coast Guard inspected and certified for your safety.

With its picture-perfect Main Street, beautiful harbor, and attractions to please every age, Hyannis is considered the hub of Cape Cod for good reason. Hyannis proves to be a great home-base while visiting Cape Cod, for all these reasons and so much more.

Cape Cod Canal: A National Civil Engineering Landmark

This man-made canal is the widest sea-level canal (without locks) in the world. It was built to create more efficient nautical trade routes, opening in July 1914. Passage through the canal is safer than having to maneuver around the dangerous shoals and unpredictable currents surrounding the Outer Cape, saving ships more than 160 miles of travel. From Onset, a village of Wareham, hop aboard  Cape Cod Canal Cruises , the Canal’s only sightseeing cruise. Climb aboard the Viking for a two or three-hour sightseeing cruise featuring live commentary about the fascinating history and points of interest along the Canal, or in the summer choose from more options like a family cruise where kids ride free, or a live music cruise.
