We were planning to visit the North East and some ease to access locations. We got in touch with NatureWings who suggested and designed the package for us which was for 6 days including 2 days stay each at Shillong, Cherrapunjee and Kaziranga. Naturewings had got our hotels booked and arranged for a cab pick up from the Guwahati airport who stayed with us during our journey and then finally dropped us back to the airport at Guwahati at the end of the trip. I must say not only the trip well planned but the choice of stay and the points to visit at the various tourist spots was very well thought of. The cab operator who was a local person was very friendly and helpful. He acted as guide to us and advised and informed us on points of interest. We had stayed at Orchid Lake Resort Barapani and Barbareek Inn at Shillong, at Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort at Cherrapunjee and at Wild Grass Resort at Kaziranga. The stay at these places were very comfortable and along with the tranquility and scenic beauty Orchid, Cherrapunjee Resort and Wild Grass Lodge it turned out to be a very memorable and enjoyable stay. Naturewings were also regularly in touch with us and though we really didn't need any help as everything was very well planned out. Must mention the support we got from Ms Arpita and later Mr. Ratul who kept in regular touch.

We have taken Kaziranga and Arunachal Trip through NatureWings in this year January month. It was Nine Nights trip with my three friends and their families. Our trip includes Kaziranga, Tawang, Dirang, Bomdila and Bhalukpong. We are from Mumbai and we got the reference of NatureWings from one of my close friend, who took the North East Package Tour from NatureWings last year and suggested me to take the Kaziranga Package Tour along with Arunachal with NatureWings only as they were extremely happy with NatureWings Service. So after a discussion, we did lots of customization as our choice and they revised the itinerary happily so many times. We have planned for Kaziranga Jungle Safari for long and our first day was in Kaziranga Jungle and on the next day early morning we took the famous Kaziranga Elephant Safari . It was only once in a life time experience as we could see the One Horn Rhinos just from few metre distance. In the afternoon, we took the Kaziranga Jeep Safari in the central range and that too was great experience. We stayed in a nice resort close to Kaziranga Western Range and resort was very beautiful with nice ambience, food and service were extremely good. Next day, we started for Western Aurnachal and we visited Bomdila, Tawang, Diranga and Bhalukpong and overall Arunachal experience was also very good. Thank you NatureWings for providing best experience in our North East Package.

We were very confused about whether to choose Arunachal Pradesh as our holiday destination but NatureWings, especially Suman convinced us that it will be a good journey and he made it. Thank u, Suman. You made it. We were fascinated by the enchanting beauty of Arunachal. It's really a gem in the North East travel sector. The hotels, homestay, the driver provided were really commendable and cordial especially when you are traveling such an extreme part of any location, The driver must be very friendly, faithful, and cordial and that one provided by NatureWings was perfect. Thank you, Suman and NatureWings for such a nice and perfect trip.
We booked our Arunachal Tour for Nov 2019 end. We were 6 persons traveling from Mumbai. We reached Gauhati by air and from there, our Arunachal Tour started with a tour guide cum driver provided by NatureWings. In this remote off-beat destination like Arunachal, you have to depend entirely on your driver and thankfully we got a decent and cordial driver throughout our Arunachal Tour. On our return, we visited Kamakhya Temple and offered puja. It was a nice trip. Mr. Suman from NatureWings deserves a Kudos.

It was such an amazing tour to Arunachal Pradesh that I can't get over it even after a year of our visit especially the quaint town of Tawang. Our family planned to have an incredible vacation to this North Eastern State with our journey starting from Guwahati and covering beautiful places like Bhalukpong, Dirang, Tawang, Bomdila, Tezpur, and Kaziranga. The destination was great, and we enjoyed a lot while staying in good accommodation amidst the mountains, quiet nature with serenity and peace was true bliss.

NatureWings Holidays arranged our Tawang Trip from Mumbai and it was a great experience we all had due to an exceptionally well-planned trip by Mr. Sandip Raha. All hotels we stayed in were good and hygienic, with our very polite driver who kept the car very clean. We appreciate and recommend NatureWings Holidays for worry-free Tawang related tours.

We went to Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh in the 2019 Diwali vacation from Delhi and booked our tour through NatureWings Holidays based on online reviews. They handled the whole trip with great care and we received follow-up calls from them on daily basis. The hotels booked were good and after spending 13 days we again wished to visit this State once again through this professional travel agency who assured us their best service.
Thanks a lot to NatureWings Holidays managed by Mr. Sandip Raha, and only for him my North East Tour was a great success. The whole arrangement was superb and everything was systematic and praiseworthy. Utmost care was taken to see our age, liking, difficulties, and choices before booking our hotels and car at a lucrative rate. I recommend every North East explorer to choose NatureWings as their travel partner for a worry-free and reliable trip.

Tawang is a beautiful place to visit while on a North East Package Tour and in early 2020 we got a chance to explore this beautiful place amidst the tough mountains. The highlight of this place is its 400 years old Tawang monastery along with few ads on nearby places like Jaswant Singh Memorial, Nuranang falls, Bumla Pass, Sangetsar Lake, and War memorial. Although the place was undoubtedly great with a good stay, but the food is an issue here as my mother being vegetarian had to rely upon minimal options, but other than that we had a great family time.

Present renovation added to this Gompa is the main prayer hall, which was dedicated to the service of God by his Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama on 13th October, 1997 AD.

Guwahati to Tawang Road Trip – Information, Guide & Map
Northeast India , Arunachal Pradesh
Last Updated on: Mar 17, 2021
Tawang is one of the most beautiful destinations in Arunachal Pradesh. And it was also the first place that we visited in the state. Our Tawang trip introduced us to many firsts. It was our first interstate road trip. That is why the Guwahati to Tawang road trip always brings a fond memory. We were also introduced to the Buddhist culture for the first time on this trip. The land of Monpas had been a kaleidoscope for us. In this article, we are sharing our experiences and all the essential requirements for Guwahati to Tawang road trip.
“Tawang is a utopia” We had heard this from an acquaintance who had visited the place almost 20 years back. She could vividly describe her experiences in Tawang and we could only sense her excitement when she spoke of the place. She had only good things to say about the beauty of Tawang and only a few complaints about the tricky roads towards the destination. Her excitement was contagious and soon we were ready for our first road trip from Guwahati to Tawang.
Why do we recommend Guwahati to Tawang Road Trip?
Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh remains one of the most sought after destinations of Northeast India. Ancient monasteries, rugged landscapes, beautiful lakes, high mountain pass and waterfalls all along the way are only a few of the attractions of this remote northeast Indian destination. The entire journey from Tezpur to Tawang is full of surprises and attractions. Bhalukpong, Dirang and Bomdila are beautiful destinations all worthy of your attention and time.
The winding mountains roads as you approach Tawang are equally beautiful and dangerous. Guwahati to Tawang road trip is an ultimate adventure for all those seeking the thrill of the road.
Guwahati to Tawang Road Trip Routes
There are actually 2 different routes for the Guwahati to Tawang road trip. One is through the NH13 starting from Guwahati, while the other is through the Chariduar – Tawang Road. Both the routes meet a little before Bomdila and take almost the same time. The route through NH13 is a little faster, but you will miss out Bhalukpong through this route.
Route 1: Chariduar – Tawang Road (512 km, 16 hours approx)
Guwahati – Nagaon – Tezpur- Balipara – Bhalukpong – Bomdila – Dirang – Sela – Tawang
This is the most common route for Guwahati to Tawang road trip. We had taken this route to Tawang.
Route 2: Via NH13 (450 km, 15 hours approx)
Don’t get fooled by what google map says. It takes almost 15 hours of continuous drive on the road to reach Tawang.
Guwahati – Sipajhar – Kalaigaon – Udalguri – Bhairabkunda – Kalaktang – Rupa – Bomdila – Dirang – Sela – Tawang
Bhairabkunda is a popular picnic spot near the junction of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan. The place is also the meeting point of three rivers Jia Dhansiri, Bhairavi and Daifam.
What is the recommended vehicle for Guwahati to Tawang Road Trip?
If you plan to self-drive on the Guwahati to Tawang Road trip, you must be a very good driver and must have experience driving on the mountain roads.
As for the car, any good SUV will be good for the roads. Your car should be in good condition. Please select any car that has high ground clearance. If you are hiring a car from Guwahati or Tezpur, please see the condition of your car beforehand.
If you are from another country and planning a road trip in India then you need to get an IDP on International Driver’s Association .
You can also cover this trip on a bike. Just like cars, your bike should be in good condition. You can read our article on Ladakh Bike trip to know about the tips of doing such a bike trip on the mountain roads.
Guwahati to Tawang by Public Transport
You can travel from Guwahati to Tawang by public transport as well.
Guwahati to Tezpur
From the ASTC Bus Stand beside Guwahati Railway Station, you will get both buses and shared sumo to Tezpur. The sumos run from morning till evening. You will also get buses to Tezpur from ISBT Guwahati. Buses tale about 5 hours to reach Tezpur from Guwahati.
Tezpur to Tawang
There are shared sumos running from Tezpur Sumo Stand all the way to Tawang. These sumos cover the entire 500 km in one day. They start as early as 5.30 am or 6.00 am and reach almost after 8.00 pm in the evening at Tawang. They provide stops for breakfast and lunch and tea 3 to 4 times throughout the journey.
If you want to visit Dirang or Bomdila, you can get off at these places.
Tezpur to Bomdila
Shared jeeps are also available from Tezpur to Bomdila.
Bomdila – Dirang – Tawang
From Bomdila, you will have two options. Buses start from Bomdila at around 5.30 am while shared sumos starts from about 6.00 am. Sumo from Bomdila to Tawang takes about 8 hours to reach while buses can take up to 10 hours.
You can stop at Dirang and can take another bus or sumo to Tawang from Dirang.
Please note that the buses and sumo all start at an early hour from these places. The distances are large and the roads are not in the best conditions.
If you wish to travel by bus, please keep track of the timings and bus time table. While our return from Bomdila to Tezpur, we had decided to take the morning bus. It so happened that the last 2 days were some holidays and buses did not ply. As a result, the only bus from Bomdila to Tezpur was fully packed with the local people and we did not even get a place to stand. We later had to rush and get the shared sumo to Tezpur.
Tentative Itinerary for the Guwahati to Tawang Trip
The distance between Guwahati to Tawang is almost 500 km. This trip is not possible to cover in a single day. The roads are also not in very good conditions at many of the places. When we visited Tawang, we took the route through Tezpur and Bhalukpong. This is the most common route taken by travellers.
Day 1: Guwahati – Tezpur (181 km, 4 hours)
Day 2: tezpur – bhalukpong (60 km, 2 hours), day 3: bhalukpong – dirang (140 km, 5 hours), day 4: dirang – tawang (135 km, 5-6 hours), day 5: tawang, day 6: tawang – bumla pass – madhuri lake – tawang, day 7: tawang – bomdila (175 km, 6-7 hours).
- Day 8 : Bomdila – Guwahati (269 km, 8-9 hours)
Here is the detailed Itinerary
We reached Guwahati Railway Station at around 10.00 am in the morning. From the ASTC Bus Stand near the Railway station buses and shared jeeps are available to Tezpur. We took a shared jeep to Tezpur and started at around 12.00 noon.
Travelling by shared vehicles always takes more time than hired or own cars. They stop at various places take up passengers and what not. So it took us almost 6 hours to reach Tezpur and we reached there at about 6.00 pm. We stayed at our uncle’s house at Tezpur for night.
The real journey begins after Tezpur. The scenic landscape and beauty of the surroundings cannot be missed. Bhalukpong is a small town on the Assam – Arunachal border where your ILPs will be checked. The last stretch of the road towards Bhalukpong is extremely beautiful. The road goes through the forested area. The forests have very beautiful names – Sonai on one side and Rupai on the other.
It is here on this road we saw a huge wild elephant on the road. As we were passing through the forest road under the supervision of military personnel, suddenly a wild elephant came out from the forest and stood in the middle of the road. We had seen elephants in jungles before at Dooars as well, but we had not seen something as large as that one. Our car driver did not wait for a moment and simply turned back and took us through a different route through the village. He told us that the elephants were quite dangerous in those areas and he did not want to take a risk. Good for him!
We reached Bhalukpong by noon. When I first heard of Tawang, I had also heard about the River Jia Bharali. And instantly I had fallen in love with the name. It was my wish to stay at Bhalukpong for a night and romance with Jia Bharali.
Jia Bharali is beautiful. It is a small rocky river, something that we have seen earlier as well. But at Bhalukpong, everything felt new and refreshing. There are villages beside the river and occasionally we could see a few people sitting on the banks of the river. The river is known as Kameng in Arunachal Pradesh. Its origin is in the glaciers of Tawang.
Things to do in Bhalukpong
- Spend time beside the Jia Bharali River
- Visit the Tipi Orchid Centre
- If time permits, visit Nameri National Park
Alternate Itinerary:
You can also visit the Nameri National Park and stay there.
We left Bhalukpong the next morning towards Dirang. We were now on the way towards Upper Himalayas and quite naturally, it started getting colder. The narrow BRO roads were bumpy and dusty, but the surrounding greenery made up for it. We were amazed to see so many waterfalls on the road. A waterfall would spring up at any corner! We had visited just after the monsoon and that could have been the reason for so many waterfalls. Nevertheless, we kept on moving and looking at the scenery and the small villages that came on the way.
Finally, we reached Dirang after crossing the Sangti valley. Dirang is an absolutely delightful place. At one side of the serpentine road is the Kameng River while the village is on the other side. Kiwi farms are found beside the roads. The small market place has a few shops and homestays for accommodation.
You can spend a couple of days at Dirang doing just nothing. The place is simply mesmerizing. We stayed there for a night and then left for Tawang on the next day.
Things to do at Dirang
- Visit the Khastung Gompa
- Sit down by the Dirang River
- Visit the Thubsung Dhargyeling Monastery
- Explore the villages and interact with the locals
- Explore Dirang Dzong
- Visit the beautiful and picturesque Sangti Valley. Infact, you can stay at Sangti Valley as well. Sangti Valley is also the home of black-necked cranes during the winter season between November to March.
It might take more time depending on the time you stop on the way.
We would recommend you to start early in the morning, especially if you are self-driving. Just like most of the high altitude passes in India, it is better to cross Sela Pass before 12.00 pm. Very cold and strong winds blow after that time and sometimes the weather condition becomes really bad. The visibility near the Pass becomes poor after 12.00 noon, more so if you are visiting during the monsoon season.
If you are going by bike, we would definitely recommend you to start early and cross Sela before noon. During our trip, we heard about a few bikers who faced problems in the afternoon due to clouds and low visibility.
We started at Dirang at about 8.30 am. It takes about 2-3 hours to reach Sela. Before reaching Sela, there is a stretch of zig-zag roads that can be quite tricky to navigate. A very good driver is required to navigate these roads.
Finally, we reached the grand gate saying “Welcome to Tawang”. Numerous prayer flags were fluttering in the strong wind. There are numerous stories about the bravery of Indian soldiers during the India-China war and few of them are related to Sela Pass as well. There is an army canteen where you can have some hot tea or coffee.
When we reached the Sela Pass, the weather was quite cold and a strong wind was blowing. Just beyond the Sela Gate, is the Sela Lake. The Lake remains frozen for most of the time, but it was completely blue in October, when we visited. We spent some time near the lake, posed for some pictures and then started our journey again.
Jaswant Garh
Jaswant Garh is about 20 km from the Sela Pass. This is also a must-visit place on your way. Jaswant Garh is the memorial of the brave Indian soldiers who lost their lives in the Sino-Indian War in 1962. The brave Indian soldiers not only faced harsh climatic conditions but also had outdated arms and ammunitions to face their Chinese counterparts. Even though, they hold their ground. The memorial is built on the memory of Jaswant Rawat, who single-handedly resisted the Chinese soldiers for a couple of days before being killed. He is worshipped as a god here.
There is an army canteen here as well that provides free tea, samosa and Maggi. There is a clean washroom as well. We stopped at the canteen and had a conversation with the army personnel there. He told us about his life in the army and heard our stories as well.
We finally started from Jaswant Garh towards Tawang. The Jang village falls on the way that is famous for the Nuranang Waterfall. We decided to visit the waterfall on our way back and headed straight towards Tawang.
If you wish to visit the mighty Nuranang Waterfall, take a diversion from the Jung village. This is another awesome place to visit on your Guwahati to Tawang road trip. If you are not visiting it while going, please do visit it while returning.
We finally reached Tawang after 7 hours. Didn’t I tell you the time to reach Tawang will depend on the length of the stops you make on the way!
After travelling through the rugged mountain roads we finally reached Tawang. A place so hidden from the world, it seems we have finally reached the utopia. Tawang district shares its borders with Bhutan. The place is also influenced mainly by Tibetan culture. As I said before, we were first introduced to Tibetan Buddhism at Tawang. Home to the Sixth Dalai Lama, Tawang is a peaceful place with maroon robed monks moving around with a serene smile on their faces.
Tawang houses the largest monastery in India. The Buddha statue inside the main prayer hall is something to look at. I stood in awe in front of the statue for minutes.
Since we had been on the road for the last few days, we decided to take it easy this day. We stayed at Tawang and explored the town. There are a number of places to visit in Tawang. The Tawang Monastery itself will take up half a day if you wish to explore it properly.
Places to visit in Tawang Town
- Tawang Monastery
- Urgelling Monastery
- Samten Yongcha Monastery
- Tawang War Memorial
We were told to start early for Bum La and Madhuri Lake. Very soon we understood why. Bum La is the Indo-China border situated at an altitude of 16000 feet. It is located about 35 km from Tawang city, but the roads are in the worst conditions. You need to have a very good car for the journey lest you want to avoid back pains.
Bum La is accessible to Indian only. No foreign tourists are allowed since it is a border area. Even for Indian visitors permits are required. We reached Bum La at around 9.00 am. It was extremely cold in the open. We visited near the India-China border, stood in front of the Indo-China Friendship Board, took photographs all within a few minutes time. We kept on wondering how our army stays and guards the borders at such harsh conditions!
Madhuri Lake
After our visit to Bum La, we drove back towards our next destination, the famous Madhuri Lake. The actual name is Sangestar Tso (Lake), but it is now known as Madhuri Lake after Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit had shot for a movie here with Shah Rukh Khan!
We were the only visitors to Madhuri Lake. We were surprised to see no tourists there. October was supposedly a peak season. After spending some time at the Madhuri Lake, our driver took us to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Well, this is not the Tiger’s Nest Monastery or Taktsang Monastery of Bhutan. This seemed to be a smaller version of the one in Bhutan.
After our visit to the monastery, we started our journey towards Tawang town. On the way, we stopped at a few other lakes of Tawang like P. T. Tso (Pankang Teng Tso), Kyo-Tso Lake, Kheset Tso, Tsobri and a few others whose name we did not know.
Finally, it was the time to bid adieu to the beautiful land of Tawang and return back. While on return we took a detour from Jung village and visited the Nuranang Falls.
The waterfalls cascade down a height of 100 metres and looks magnificent even from a distance. Standing below the waterfall, we felt so little compared to its height. Everything about the place was spectacular.
We retraced the same way and reached Bomdila. Bomdila is a small town and also the district headquarters of the West Kameng district. At Bomdila, you can visit the Bomdila Monastery and the Craft Museum & Ethnographic Museum. You can also visit the Bomdila viewpoint.
Day 8: Bomdila – Guwahati (269 km, 8-9 hours)
While return, you can take the NH15 route. However, we returned by the same way we went. We did not stop at Tezpur and then finally to Guwahati.
What are the Best Places to visit en route Guwahati to Tawang?
I have covered this in the itinerary itself. Here is the list of places where you must stop en route Guwahati to Tawang.
- Jashwant Garh
- Nuranang falls, Jung village
What is the Best Time for Guwahati to Tawang Road Trip?
Before planning your Guwahati to Tawang Road trip, please be aware of the weather conditions in Tawang. It is a place where the weather remains pretty uncertain.
April to May
This is the best time for all those who seek refuge from the heat of the plains. It is the summer season and temperature ranges from 5 to 22 degrees. You might still get to see snowfalls in the higher altitudes and Sela Lake might be frozen during this time. This is a good time for a road trip.
June to September
This is the monsoon season in Arunachal Pradesh. While the entire region becomes very beautiful in the rains, travelling, in general, is a bit risky due to the bad road conditions. The area around Sela Pass remains cloudy and visibility is very poor. We would recommend you not to take a road trip at this time. Roads can also get stuck due to landslides.
Late September to October
The autumn brings clear skies and cooler weather. Road conditions are better now and the waterfalls are also in their full glory. The lakes in Tawang are in their true colour and not frozen. We had visited in October. Tawang Festival also takes place in October.
November to March
This is the winter season in Tawang. December and January see entire Tawang in a blanket of ice. Many of the major attractions become inaccessible due to snow. Temperatures often go below zero during this time. While you can visit Tawang during this time to experience the snow, but I don’t think this is an ideal time for a road trip.
The best time for Guwahati to Tawang road trip is between April and May and October and November.
How to get Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh?
Getting an ILP for Arunachal Pradesh is perhaps the easiest among the northeast Indian states. You can apply ILP for Arunachal Pradesh online .
Offline ILPs are issued from Arunachal Bhawan in Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Shillong, Tezpur, Dibrugarh, North Lakhimpur and Jorhat.
What are the Places to stay during Guwahati to Tawang Road Trip?
Tawang has a number of hotels and homestays.
Best Places to eat during Guwahati to Tawang Road Trip
During the entire travel route, you will get a number of eateries along the way. On the journey, try having proper meals. Avoid excessive spicy food.
Important Tip: Try not to have alcohol while travelling towards Tawang. Alcohol and high altitude do not work well together. There are chances to get AMS and that can happen to any individual, however, fit he may be.

Hi, your blog was very informative. I am planning to travel solo from guwahati. Kindly recommend if i can take public transport in tawang to cover all the points in tawang or shall i book a private cab? From where shall I book the cab?
Thank you so much for your comment. It is better to book a cab for sightseeing in Tawang. You will get cabs from the market area. You can also ask the hotel where you are staying.
i am planning to visit arunachal in between september october this year .no doubt ,your wonderful and very informative article regarding Arunachal visit will help me much. thank you very much.
So glad you liked our article. Thank you so much. Have a wonderful trip.
it is very informative and helpfull.Thank u. we are planing to visit twang onthe last weak of september
Amazing….blog. Extremely informative! For a larger group of travellers, would a 25 seater traveller work well on those roads?
Thanks Lakshmi, for taking the time to read our blogs. Recently, I have heard that the roads are now in very good conditions. Buses used to travel on these roads. So I think a 25-seater traveller will also work on the roads. But for Tawang sightseeing and other places like Maduri Lake, I am a little doubtful about a big vehicle.
Thanks so much for the information! I would love to do this trip. Do you have any knowledge on permits for non-indian citizens? Thanks!
Thank you so much! For permits for non-Indians, please have a look at https://experiencenortheastindia.com/ilp-procedure-northeast-india/
Thanks a lot for the wonderful information…
Thank you so much!
Very informative can you give a list of homestays you came across
Thank you! We will try to include the homestays in our next update.
Thank you for such a wonderful article. I am planning to visit Tawang this weekend in a public vehicle. Just wanted to know if I can get shared tourist vehicles in Tawang for sight seeing or will I have to hire a private cab
Hi Guys, thanks for the wonderful article. Just wanted to know if we can cover all these areas in 4-5 days, I will take a private cab.
Tawang itself will require 3-4 days. You can always reduce the days spent there. This entire trip can be done in 5 days if you do not stop over at Dirang, Bomdila or Bhalukpong.
I’m glad I found this article. Very informative. All the best for your future adventures.
BTW I’m planning to visit Arunachal Pradesh this September (2021). Any good cab/ Car contact number to travel from Guwahati to Tawang?
I have been always fascinated by the beauty of Arunachal Pradesh. Though i have never visited the place, but it surely is in my travel list. Your wrote such a wonderful article. Thank you.

How to Plan A Week-long Guwahati to Tawang Road-trip: An Insider’s GUIDE!
About this blog: A road trip from the plains of Guwahati to the high of the Tawang is a time consuming yet rewarding journey showcasing the very best of Northeast India! In this blog, I tell you how to plan the road-trip to Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh as a part of a DIY trip.
Tawang remains the most sought after destinations in Arunachal Pradesh, North East India. Hundreds of travellers flock to the high mountains every year. The snow of higher Himalayas, multiple unexplored trekking routes, the glacier trail, frozen lakes: you name it and thou shalt get it!
However, the mighty mountains are not reachable by regular flights, let alone be the great Indian railway. Flight remains a hastily arranged helicopter trip and the avian route takes away from the nature trails. Road trip from Guwahati with a strong SUV is practical the way forward.
Of course, you can also share the ride if you avail a seat with the shared sumo cars! Plenty of these shared jeeps leaves from Guwahati and Tezpur. So does a state run bus. The only caveat is you have to start as early as 5 am in the morning. that is fine considering Arunachal Pradesh is the eastern most state of India and morning starts here before you know it!
Also Read about Three days in Tawang ! You may consider exploring Kaziranga National Park on the way back.
Save it for to read it later!
Assuming you are prepared to scale 15000 feet of Himalayas, physically, mentally and are equipped with documents (read the ILP, Inner Line Permit: a necessary document to visit anywhere and everywhere in Arunachal for those outside of the state), here is a guide for a week’s travel in the last pristine wilderness of Himalaya, largely staying away from touristy crowd.
Please note, we traveled by the end of December. The snow had melted, the fall was on, greens of the mountains had disappeared. If you are planning to visit during monsoon, you will see a different world altogether! However, monsoon also sees frequent landslides enroute Tawang, be advised of that.
A few basic information on our travel to Tawang
- We reached Guwahati by flight from Bangalore
- We traveled with a private SUV car. If you are planning to travel in the same way, I suggest hire an SUV. Charges (INR 5000 , $74 per day)
- We had skipped Nameri national park for we were visiting national parks of Assam . Otherwise, I would have spent a day at Nameri National Park too.
If you are planning to ride a bike to Tawang, this guide will still be helpful. Just plan for a steep ascend.
A hurricane tour of Guwahati, en-route Bhalukpong
We reached Guwahati on a mushy afternoon. The capital city of Assam city that loosely connects the extended seven sisters state with mainland India, also termed as chicken’s neck , reminds me of Kolkata for many reasons. I bid adieu to Guwahati quickly as our car took the highway towards upper Assam. The leisurely strolls by river Bramhaputra and gaping with tenderness at the pretty old colonial houses can wait until next time, I console myself.
We were headed for Bhalukpong for the night. The long stretch of highway bypassing the plains of Bramhaputra’s alluvial soil, vast water bodies and green croplands stretching till horizon are such a treat to the eyes. The roadside is dotted with little Dhabas, which serve the best (and I repeat, the BEST) Indian thali .
Also read: A sumptuous spread of authentic Bodo cuisine!
The traditional Assamese thali comes on a Kansha er thala (brass plates) , with neatly filled up bowls circling, containing delicacies like leafy vegetables, fish, meat, daal and more. Assamese love their rice. My Bengali palette was excited and got more excited when the macher jhol (fish curry) came with little taste of sugar and more of a tangy sourness!
By dusk, we reached Koliabhomra bridge (literal meaning a black bee bridge). As the name suggests, the Koliabhomra is humongous bridge connecting the banks of Bramhaputra, and a road to Arunachal Pradesh, the state that is India’s far east. If you plan rightly, you can witness a majestic sunset on the river.
My mother recalls her younger days from Shillong and talks about Bramhaputra dearly. In her opinion, the monstrous river was actually a sea! Imagine watching a sunset over a sea like water body at the Himalayan foothills?
Be careful of the travel season. Monsoon gives extra volume to the Bramhaputra Nod (and not a nodi , a feminine figure that usually describes Indian rivers. Bramhaputra is a male river, merciless).
Good to know to information:
We reached Guwahati at 11 am in the morning and decided to proceed for Arunachal Pradesh on that very day. The onward journey took us roughly 5 hours and we were at Bhalukpong by a little after sundown.
Bhalukpong is at the border of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Crossing border will require you to get an ILP, which I have written at details here. We got our ILP online. Alternatively, you can decide to spend the night at Guwahati, specially if you are reaching late at night and have little time buffer for travel on the same day. Ideally you will be proceeding for Bomdila the day next.
- Pros of visiting Bhalukpong and not heading for Bomdila : More time to acclimatize. Extend the travel, especially it is a road-trip! Meeting the beautiful river named Jia Bharali (also known as Kameng)
- Cons (not really) : You cover more distance and spend extra money. Not soaking in the gentleness of Guwahati!
A night at Bhalukpong and romancing river Jia Bharali
Jia Bharali, Jia Bharali… ever since I heard the name of this river, I knew I gotta go and meet her. I have a thing for the rivers !
Bhalukpong welcomes us with darkness, punctuated with transcending cars’ headlights. The tiny roadside stalls has Maa Tara written on them! I knew Arunachal is Bengali’s own Switzerland but why indulge in maach-bhaat-daal in Arunachal? (guilty I am since I gorged on the same in a couple of days’ time!)
Soon after we caved into our hotel Druk and ordered for dinner. The hotel runs of minimal resources however has all the goodwill to provide you comfort. As a result, we had a great meal of roti and Chicken curry along with daal and salad with warm hospitality.
Arunachalis will overwhelm you with the efforts they put in in order to make you feel comfortable. Water is sourced from outside, so is food. You are expected to cooperate and not generate waste out of what you are provided. A melancholic Momo shop as the town was undergoing a power cut. Memories of my melancholic momo…
Also read: Complete guide to visit Sa Pa in 3 days!
It is a small town by the mountain river. Early morning rendezvous with Jia Bharali is refreshing.
It was actually from the second day that I realized I have escaped the urban shackles and living in the true wilderness. The river is made out of small rocks, formed over ages as ice melted and brought them down from upper Himalayas. Jia Bharali sows you kakchokkhu jol, (in Sanskrit, we don’t compare water with crystals, but with a crow’s eye). Locals live by the river. Every now and then, you will spot an old lady sitting by the rocks with a cheep. I remember our Kashmir trip where we spotted the snipers like bounty hunters. Jia Bharali flows fast, full of energy, temps you with her beauty, yet scares you when you go nearby. You know you cannot swim in that water. Mountain rivers.. hidden currents…flash floods…
Reality hit me hard as I proceed a bit further on the river bed. A tiny opening from the town opens it’s mouth on the river. Tons of plastic, rejected waste and much more are flowing in. Is that how we treat our rivers?
Jia Bharali is called as Kameng in Arunachal and is originated in the Tawang glaciers, where we are headed for. Many a rope bridge connecting marooned villages adorns the river.
- if you want to binge on cheaper alcohol, stock up here. do not indulge in kiwi wine et al unless locals offer you at the home-stays. Do try the rice wine though, one of the best local moonshines from North East.
- Do carry a torch. Entire Arunachal suffers from power cut after sundown.
- Love birding? do not miss Nameri National Park. (Advice coming from birder Rupankar Sarkar).
- Love the local portraits? Ask before you use your camera. The mountain people are descendants of royal tribes and may not feel exactly amused being subject of DSLRs.
If you look carefully, there is no dearth of desire. Desire by nature. To create an overflowing life. The lush green of the mountains are constantly nourished with water. Water flows as sun rays glistens on the glaciers. In between all these, we humans strive to make meaning of our (in) significant lives. Build rope bridges to cemented roads, and feel secure and connected. . This bridge is nearly half a century old. Think of it. It is as old as famed Howrah bridge. Made with handmade ropes and wood, it has holes right in the middle, yet sustains local livelihood with unprecedented calm. . Be it a war or a delivery of a new born, villagers rush through this to the nearest secure center. Take temporary shelter, birth-nurse the baby and come back. And in good times, the bridge helps them cross the river with tons of logs collected from the dense forest. They sell some, use rest for fuel. . On the way to Dirang, from Bhalukpong. A 150 km stretch of road with nearly 6/7 rope bridges. In winter, it may get frozen. In monsoon, the river may get overwhelmed and storm through it. . It lives though, and help locals in the process. . Underneath flows my beautiful river Jia Bharali ❣ . . . #arunachalpradesh #explorenortheast #indiatravelgram #iamtb #nikonphotography #woodenbridge #livelikealocal A post shared by Orange Wayfarer (@orangewayfarer) on Mar 14, 2018 at 4:00am PDT
Leaving Jia Bharali behind in search of the elusive to Dirang Valley
Bidding adiue to Bhalukpong was easy as I chinned up for the upper Himalaya. The wind will be thinner, colder and sheer in a few hours, I promised myself. Scaling up the dodgy BRO roads can be a challenge for an unaccustomed.
We saw groups of children on their way to school in blue uniform. It was the end of December. Fall colors made love with the mountains, it was all read. Did not spot any snow en-route, It never snows in Dirang, locals said.
People climb up the slopes of their terrace at ease. A few roadsides vendors are selling garlic and bamboo shoot achars. Bamboo shoot achar in Arunachal has a strange aroma and style of melting well with the food. Wild banana plantations make for a green hollow in the valleys. Sights of previous landslide intrigues me. several army vehicles pass through.
In Arunachal, I have experienced innumerable umber of army vehicles, surpassing local populace. Especially on my way to Tawang. I found people DM-ing me , post my IG stories how Doklam possess a threat for international security and demands convoy movement. The thought is scary.
We stopped a little ahead of Sangti valley and has lunch. Humble daal, rice, raddish shaak never tasted better in my life. You can also order a bowl of warm maggi. The tour agencies plying people from the plains will arrange for a dining hall and serve steamed rice and other delicacies the thakur cooked early in the morning.
The Shangti valley we crossed en-route is a military camp. It houses army hospitals(which also serves locals), churches and a prominent kabarsthan (burial ground).
Dirang town is small and bustling, surprising given it’s high altitude. At one side, the serpentine path goes towards Tawang. On the other hand this river Kameng flows and sings for the entire night. What is not there to love in Dirang? The local market has dominant Marwari business population, selling coconuts, Hindu worshiping ingredients and woolens.
It is possible to find a few home stay accommodation in Dirang market, which you do not get to see online. Home stays are often spread through word of mouth, by seasoned traveler.
We lived in the sole hotel of Dirang, Pemaling , acquiring a prominent cliff as you enter the town and looking over the majestic mountains. Local cuisine is served here, decor is very old school, which I love!
- Again, allow yourself enough time to acclimatize. Cannot stress enough!
- There is only one route to Tawang and with heavy snow means it may be closed.
- Road is spiral. Get medicine if motion sickness bothers you. A quick home remedy: use garlic pods in drinking water. Learnt from a lady selling breakfast.
- Do make plans to spend a few days in the serene Dirang Valley.
- There is a national yak research center which was closed when we went.
- Do not buy woolens from Dirang unless you wanna pay extra price and help the business men. Army camps sell the same thing for cheaper.
The last lag of the road-trip: Dirang to Tawang
While standing by the high cliffs of Dirang, a splash of cold Himalayan wind caressed my cheeks. I knew I have reached home !
Also read: What are the things to consider before this Tawang trip?
With a couple of boiled eggs as breakfast, a few pine nuts collected from the hot spring, we start for Tawang. Jia Bharali dances by the side. River bed has become deeper, broader. With a few bends, we lose her and proceed to a broken road. There are walls made with huge stones to prevent landslide. Roads and dust show nature did not oblige to human effort. Soon after, the mountains started to look tinier, Dirang valley looked like a miniature human habitat from afar, we were about to tread on Sela Pass.
The first time I heard about Se La Pass, I hardly knew about the regal entrance and the stunning lake. I knew army men died here during Indo-Sino war out of bitter cold, only to be found later as “frozen body”.
Sela Pass and Nura valley
Risk scores high rank as you cross Sela, one of the highest motor-able pass in the world. The lake retained frozen shape by the banks, allowing visitors to tread carefully. In good summer days (if there is summer at all in this part of Himalaya), the arid land grows moss, making a lounge for the wild yaks. Many small Buddha stupas are raised by the road. They are decked up with yak skeletons, bright colors, flags marking peace mantras and dharma jantra, chiming in a peaceful vibe.
You will ideally stop at Sela and make merry by the bans of the lake. Once content, your journey to Tawang starts. The wind is bitter cold, yaks are all wild, the mountain stream is fearsome, army camps look like glasshouse and show no photo signs everywhere. Sela lake is neighbours with Nura Valley. Named after the local women who helped Indian warriors during the battle of Nuranang, the valley will inspire awe.
Peaks of Himalaya scale up to the sky. In January, you will see a few glimpses of ice. Ice sheets cover the road. Road is newly built, after much toil. At the moment around half a million warriors are sharing Indo-China border. The road was built in order to provide easy access for military convoy.
Jaswant Garh
Soon after, you shall reach Jaswant Garh. The road to Tawang bears legacy of Indo-Sino battle field, some of the horrific cruelty and accounts of bravery. Back then, India, a newly independent country was using ammo similar to those used in WW1. Sepoys were left to encounter an unknown and stronger army from human and nature as well. Jaswant Gagh is a Buddhist inspired dome where locals come and offer there worship to Jaswant Rawat , a sepoy who resisted Chinese army for a couple of days, before being beheaded. The bunkers remain. Moss grew on them. Yaks graze by its side. Dainty women click selfies with snow capped peaks of Himalaya at the background.
Army has opened a canteen here to provide free Chai, samosa, maggi and a washroom. I must admit, this washroom was on of the best in cleanliness I had used en-route. A lot of army convoys make a stop here. Legends of the land says Jaswant’s spirit comes to slap the sepoys who fall asleep on duty!
The Jang Village
The descent starts towards Jang as you have crossed Jaswant Garh. You will spot a lot of menacing looking black furry dogs on the road. Dogs at Bomdila eat men. I read somewhere. I keep safe distance from them. The small town has a petrol pump by Assam Oil, a few eateries serving maach and bhaat (yes, i succumbed to greed and regret. DO NOT eat fish here). A grocery shop next is selling yai yai, dried corns, a lot of vegetables and more.
Every house in the villages has there own kitchen garden. Real estate is more REAL here, with a sprawling courtyard scaling higher. It is easy to grow your own cauliflower, radish and the domesticated Mithun go for a stroll with the toddler. Life is laid back, easy, calm, resources abundant: all the things we dream on!
You can speed up post lunch and head straight to Tawang if the sundown starts! However, with a little extra time take the deviation to head for a majestic glimpse of Nuranang Falls .
Shahrukh Khan romanced Madhuri Dixit with a flute on the top of the waterfall. The king of romance could never go wrong with the choice of a venue!
Nuranang is a major tributary of the river Jia Bharali. A Hydel project stands at the bottom, providing power for the town. The waterfall is set amid a wild set up, away from the hustling of human civilization. On the other bank, Yaks graze gracefully.
We sped up to reach Tawang at the sundown.
SBI board says welcome to Jang. So you know banking facilities can be availed here.
If you are traveling by shared Sumo, you are likely to miss Nuranang Falls and spend lesser time by the Sela Pass. However, upon request and a bit of luck, it is doable (provided you reach Tawang before it is dark).
Talks are in progress for a tunnel proceeding towards Tawang from Dirang or Bomdila, so that the weather cannot gnaw much on the accessibility. However, I wonder how the road-trip to Tawang will shape like if that happens!
Tawang: the elusive white horse
(also details where shall you visit in Tawang)
Crossing these treacherous yet stunning landscape in a few day’s time, as we reached Tawang town, hidden from the plain-lander carefully, at the highest cliffs of Himalaya, I wonder how did the monk reach here ages back. I wonder at his energy, enthusiasm and vision while sipping on a cup of warm butter tea, a Tibetan delicacy.
Tawang is influenced with Tibetan culture at large. Once a part of greater Tibet, it was annexed with India with the old British McMohan line. Much political bickering has been hurled at it. The Chinese Dragon looms large at the border. Yet, the home to sixth Dalai lama, Tawang is a peaceful city of maroon cloth clad monks. The Sakyamuni Buddha, the oldest form of Buddha worship in India, smiles at his devotes, from his gigantic crown.
the town of Tawang is old and nothing spectacular. It’s busy, small, roads are dwindling, night falls suddenly after a spectacular sundown with pink smeared all over the sky, bitter cold gnaws your skin deep.
If you hike a little you will confront barriers, army jeep, may be asked to show permit at every check point and an overwhelming presence of khaki uniforms will make you gape.
But Tawang also houses India’s largest monastery. You need a day to explore the old monastery, its museum, library, quarters housing the young monks and more.
Want to explore more of Tawang? Head to the nunnery where the sixth Dalai Lama was born.
Visit Bum la (exclusive to Indian Passport holders)
The real prowess of an Indian Passport comes when you apply for a visit to Bum la. International travelers, I am sorry but this is solely Indian territory and no other countryman is allowed in.
Spare a whole day for Bum La. Arrange for a pricey Arunachali car (highly a sumo, if lucky you shall get to share), and ride the sojourn into what can be described as Himalaya’s last true wilderness. Roads are on the make on many occasions. People are at work. A single car comes at the end of the day to take them back home. They wait with a lit fire. From a distance that fire looks very much like what hope looks like!
Also go to the Madhuri Lake, locally known as the Sangteshar lake. Migratory birds roam freely.
And then the return journey begins! Tawang to Bomdila
Killjoy starts when you have to bid adieu to a mountain town bordered by glaciers and azure water (or is it the sky)! The descent starts with a heavy heart as we proceed towards Bomdila. One last time I could look at the tiny monastery at the lap of the mountain. One last time i could walk on the ice cover of Se la lake. Haaye !
Also Watch: A series of roadtrip in youtube!
The descent was rather fast. We reached Bomdila by 3 pm.
The town of Bomdila showed us the much coveted local life and let us interact. Our hotel overlooked a football ground. A tiny Chinese restaurant served us great food, spicy with fiery chillies (which I love)! At night, we went for a stroll and lost one of my my ear ring. The next morning, as I went for a lookout, the kind man came out with his dustbin and rampaged through it all. I wish I would not have make him do this!
A lady came to sell her day’s product. Mithun jerky, yak cheese, different types of seeds and other delicacies that they love were on sale!
Bomdila may not match up with Dirang when it comes to natural beauty and of course Jia bharali does not flow by the side. However the huts are pretty and show a fest of color in plant pots, resting on each balcony! How I love the mountain towns! I hear there is a gompha nearby as well.
Bomdila to Guwahati: That’s a wrap!
We were further traveling to Shillong and had a long day ahead! For Guwahati you need around 9 hours. The descent is rather dramatic. Yaks get replaced by scenes of cows grazing! The cold air does not pass through the car and you start to sweat in awhile!
You know you have reached the plain land, in the comfort of home once the Assamese tea gardens show case it’s legendary stretch.

Northeast India is high on my list. The pictures of Bum La look really impressive, but ;uckily your blog gives great tipos on other places to go. The Assamese thali looks delicious as well
I went to India in 2016, but sadly I didn’t have time to explore north east India. Arunachal Pradesh looks like it is brimming with natural beauty and as a foodie, I would love to visit the tea farms.
This is an amazing trip. You Good to Know sections are helpful.
I think you’ll find very similar landscapes and surroundings when you go to Bhutan later this year!
Brilliant advice here. Incredibly detailed with great photographs. Really opens up a part of India I’m not familiar with. Well done.
Sounds and looks so amazing! I’d love to do this itinerary one day, it looks perfect for a mountain and nature lover such as myself.
I have never been to visit India but it seems that there is so much to do that one could visit it for years and not see all of it! I hope to get there soon! Thank you for this wonderful article!
I am really fond of road trips to northeast. Though haven’t done this circuit. Must say your post is very descriptive and informative. I loved the photos and the one of Thali was mouth watering. Thanks for sharing
hi, could you please tell me the name of the hotel you stayed at in Bomdila and any other good options that you might be aware of.
Hotel Pemaling 🙂
Is passport mandatory for getting Bumla pass permit? Any other govt. of India ID wont’t work?
Hi Raphale. Any ID issues by GOI will be accepted. passport is not mandatory.
Hi Madhurima,

Kaziranga Tawang Tour 8 Days [8D/7N]
If you want to visit both the Kaziranga National Park and take a Tawang tour in Arunachal Pradesh but have just about 8 days to spare, this Tawang and Kaziranga itinerary will be a good fit for you. This Kaziranga And Tawang In 8 Days is a great introduction to both these otherwise very different places.
The day-wise plan for this Kaziranga Tawang tour of 8 days that we will follow will be as follows:
Day 1: guwahati to kaziranga national park.
- Day 2: Kaziranga National Park jungle Safaris [Jeep Safari and Elephant Safari]
- Day 3: Kaziranga National Park To Bomdila/Dirang
Day 4: Bomdila/Dirang To Tawang
- Day 5: Local travel in and around Tawang
- Day 6: Tawang – BumLa – Shungestar Lake – Tawang*
- Day 7: Tawang To Bomdila/Dirang
Day 8: Dirang/Bomdila To Guwahati
The tour begins at the Guwahati airport where you will be greeted and received by North East Explorers representative. On the way, enjoy scenic views of Assam countryside, paddy fields, and perfectly manicured tea gardens as you drive through the plains of Assam dotted by random, small towns all along, to the Kaziranga National Park . If you land early in the morning, you can go for Kaziranga Jeep Safari else, the evening is free to rest and relax.
Day 2: Kaziranga Jungle Safaris – Jeep Safari and Elephant Safari
Get up early and head to the elephant safari boarding point. You will be picked up from your stay well ahead of the safari start time. Once on the back of the elephant, enjoy watching the one-horned Indian rhinos from up close. And not just the rhinos, you will get ample opportunities to spot different types of deer, water buffaloes, and a variety of native and migratory birds, among others.
After a quick rest during the day, head out again for a jeep safari deep into the National Park . A jeep safari is a really interesting way to explore and feel the jungle as it takes you much deeper inside the woods as compared to the elephant safari. Going deeper means sighting more animals, even some of the most elusive ones.
In the evening, head to the Kaziranga Orchid Park to enjoy some cultural performances (depending on the park’s schedule).
Day 3: Kaziranga to Bomdila/Dirang
We enter Arunachal Pradesh today. The drive will take you from the plains of Assam to the high mountains of Arunachal Pradesh. Take multiple photo breaks on the way, the views outside will compel you to! Lush green vegetation, high mountains, and interesting snaking roads will keep you company all through your journey today. Reach by late evening and stay at the beautiful Bomdila Monastery or a gorgeously-located Monpa homestay in Dirang (if staying in Dirang) for the night.
We start for Tawang today and en-route stop at Nyukmadung war memorial and pay our respect to the fallen soldiers there. Our next stop will be at the mighty Se-la (high-altitude pass) and soak in the gorgeous views of the surroundings. The breathtaking views up to the Se la itself make up for the day, you will simply not want it to end.
At Se-la, we visit & pay our respect at the Tawang war memorial . Then, we warm ourselves with some piping-hot tea at the army canteen before resuming our journey from Se la to Tawang . But, not before stopping for a small stroll by the lovely Sela Lake (which remains frozen in winter and much after that).
Next, we stop at the Nuranang Waterfall, or the Jang Falls, as it is also known. The sheer grandness of the waterfall is sure to make your jaws drop. By evening, we reach our lovely homestay in Tawang where more fun awaits 🙂
Day 5: Tawang Local Sightseeing: Must-visit places
Today is a relaxed day so, start your day at leisure. There are quite a few places to visit in Tawang which you will be exploring today. We begin our day at the Tawang monastery , located not very far from our homestay. We explore the place at our own pace. Stop and talk to the monks staying there, take in the views of the town from the monastery, and much more. Then, from there, we head to the Urgeling monastery , the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama and the Ani Gompa (time permitting). In the evening, we visit the Tawang War Memorial and experience the light and sound show there.
Day 6: Tawang To Bum La and Sungester Lake
Today is going to be a long day over bumpy roads for the most of it. On the bright side, today is also going to be one of the most exciting days of your Tawang trip. We start early today to explore the beautiful lakes and valleys at the higher reaches of the region. On our way to our first stop, the Pankang Teng Tso , we drive through what was once a battlefield. The scars of the war can still be seen all around.
We then proceed to the India – China border at Bum La , which is at an altitude of about 5000 mts above MSL! We spend some time there before starting our return journey to Tawang. Albeit, with a very interesting detour. We visit the Sungester Lake , also known as the Madhuri Lake of Koyla (the Bollywood movie) fame, and spend some time there, impressed by the sheer size of the towering mountains surrounding the place. Not to mention the beauty of this unique lake. By evening, head back to Tawang.
Day 7: Tawang To Dirang/Bomdila
Today we start our return journey back to the plains of Assam. We re-trace back the route we had taken while going up, to Tawang. Enjoy the scenery outside and take multiple photo stops as you, please. By evening, reach your homestay in Dirang/Bomdila.
We wake up early today so that we can explore the monastery once again (if staying at the Bomdila monastery), this time while the monks are busy praying. After a hearty breakfast, we start our return journey, back to Guwahati which marks the end of this wonderful trip.
