Choosing the Best Side of a Cruise Ship

Choosing the Best Side of a Cruise Ship

One of the decisions to make when booking a cruise is selecting the ideal cabin, including which is the best side of the cruise ship to choose. While there isn’t a definitive “best” side of a cruise ship, understanding the advantages and disadvantages of each side can help you make an informed decision.

Explore the pros and cons of each side of a cruise ship, allowing you to choose the option that suits your preferences.

The port side of a cruise ship refers to the left-hand side when facing forward (towards the bow). Here are some key factors to consider when choosing a cabin on the port side:

  • Scenic Views : Depending on the itinerary, the port side may offer captivating views during certain ports of call. If your itinerary primarily includes ports on the port side, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy breathtaking vistas directly from your cabin or the ship’s public areas.
  • Sun Exposure : On some itineraries, the port side can benefit from more shade during the day. If you prefer to avoid direct sunlight and enjoy a cooler ambiance on your balcony, the port side might be a better choice.
  • Docking Position : When the ship docks at ports, the view from the port side cabins can vary. Sometimes, the port side will face the land, providing a view of the port facilities, while other times, it may face the open sea or other ships. It’s essential to consider whether the visual aspect of the docking process is of interest to you.

Starboard Side

The starboard side of a cruise ship is the right-hand side when facing forward. Let’s explore some factors associated with choosing a cabin on the starboard side:

  • Sunrise and Sunset Views : Depending on the direction of your itinerary, the starboard side can offer spectacular views of both sunrise and sunset. Imagine waking up to a glorious sunrise or savoring the mesmerising hues of a sunset from the comfort of your cabin or balcony.
  • Panoramic Ocean Views : If your itinerary predominantly features days at sea or cruising along beautiful coastlines, the starboard side can provide an uninterrupted view of the vast expanse of the ocean. The absence of land on this side can create a sense of serenity and connection with the sea.
  • Distant Landscapes : When the ship approaches ports or passes by scenic locations, the starboard side may provide distant views of picturesque landscapes. It’s important to research your specific itinerary to determine if the starboard side aligns with your desired sights.

Additional Factors to Consider

  • Ship’s Design : Not all cruise ships are identical, and their layout can impact the views from each side. Research the ship’s design and consult deck plans to understand if there are any potential obstructions, such as lifeboats or overhangs, which could limit your view from specific cabins.
  • Personal Preferences : Ultimately, your choice of cabin side depends on your personal preferences and priorities. Some passengers prioritise privacy and quiet, opting for cabins located away from public areas. Others may prioritise convenience, selecting cabins close to elevators and amenities. Consider what matters most to you in terms of location and convenience.

What is the Best Side of a Cruise Ship to Be On?

what is the best side of a cruise ship to be on

From your destination to your itinerary, there’s a lot to consider when booking a cruise. But before you fill your head up with thoughts of what to do, where to go, and what to eat, you might want to consider where you plan to sleep. What many cruise guests don’t know is that their place on a cruise ship can significantly affect the experience.

The specific location of your stateroom could make or break the entire vacation. So which is the best side of a cruise ship to be on? Take cues from this practical guide.

Port vs Starboard: What’s the Difference?

If you’re not used to maritime lingo, the words ‘port’ and ‘starboard’ can seem a little too technical. But simply put, port is the left side of the ship and starboard is the right. These terms were coined sometime in the 16 th century as the New World colonization came into full swing.

Of course, you could always just say ‘left’ and ‘right’, but the difficulty is that these terms can change meaning depending on the perspective of the person using them. Port and starboard stay the same regardless of where you look at the boat from, eliminating the ever annoying exchange of ‘my left or your left?’

The side you choose will heavily affect the kind of views you get during the trip. And because most of your cruise will be spent, well, cruising, it’s important that you choose a stateroom that will give you exactly the kind of picturesque backdrop you’re hoping to post on your Instagram page.

Some cruises will offer breathtaking views regardless of where your room is located. For instance, a trip through the Panama Canal will provide beautiful scenery whether you choose port or starboard. Then of course, there are other routes that might have most of the mountain sides, quaint villages, and shorelines on just one side during the whole trip.

For those who want both calm ocean waves and a view of the locality, closed-loop routes start and end at the same departure port. That means you can get the best of both worlds regardless of whether you choose port or starboard.

Again, it’s all a matter of preference. If you like the sights and sounds of the ocean, then choose a stateroom that faces the wide open waves. Otherwise, you can book a room that faces the unique scenery that you’re scheduled to pass through. If you’re not sure which side offers which, you can always give your cruise liner a call and they should be able to assist you.

Is the Cabin More Important Than Location?

Some people say that it doesn’t really matter what side of a cruise ship you’re on, as long as your cabin provides the kind of comfort, space, and convenience that you prefer. To some extent, that might actually be true. To give you a better idea, it’s important to know the four types of cruise staterooms:

These rooms are the smallest and don’t have any windows that show you the view outside.

Usually the same size as inside rooms, but may have a window or a porthole that shows you what’s going on outside.

These larger rooms have their own veranda that lets you step outside and enjoy the fresh breeze without having to step out on deck.

These are the largest and most luxurious. Bedrooms are separate from living rooms, and some might even have a kitchenette.

If you really think about it, you probably won’t be spending too much of your time locked up in your stateroom. There are a lot of things you can do on a cruise ship, and tons of interesting places to visit on board. So although that room view might play a role, you’re not going to be there 24/7 to stare out the window.

See to it that you also consider the quality of your stateroom. Does it provide enough space? What about any features and amenities that could improve the experience? If you only plan to plop in bed after a day of activities, and inside or outside room might be enough. But if you’re staycationing like nobody’s business, definitely upgrade to a balcony or suite.

How to Choose the Best Cabin on a Cruise Ship

Before you make that booking, see to it that you fully understand what you’re getting. There’s a lot to consider when choosing a stateroom, and there are a few factors that might not come to mind unless you really take the time to think things through. Here are some basic considerations:

Do You Get Seasick?

This could play a major role in your enjoyment. If you find that you often get seasickness on a boat, then you might want to choose a room with a view. Rooms with opening windows or balconies also improve ventilation which can help you breathe much better. See our complete guide on where to stay on a cruise ship to avoid seasickness .

You might also be interested in: Can Seasickness Kill You? and How to Prevent Seasickness on a Boat .

What Kind of View Do You Want?

Again, it’s all about preference. You can always ask your cruise line to find out what kind of view you can expect on either the port or starboard side of their ship.

How Much are you Willing to Spend?

Like airfares, cabin prices can fluctuate dramatically. Typically though, prices tend to drop around two months before the cruise is set to sail. Although it can be risky (especially if staterooms are selling out fast) you can hold on to your luck and wait it out to see if you can snag a discounted deal.

A Room with a View

Deciding on the side of the ship you want to be on depends mainly on your preference and what you expect to do while you’re on board. So, exactly which is the best side of a cruise ship to be on? Well, you’ll be the judge of that. Just make sure to consider your expectations and don’t be afraid to ask so you can get the most out of your cruise ship experience.

It’s not just a farewell; it’s a grand send-off, as Celebrity Silhouette , the current Celebrity Cruises ship home-porting in Southampton, prepares to embark on her final voyage from the UK on October 22nd, 2023.

cruise side profile

This departure not only signifies the end of an era, but serves as an opportunity to celebrate her remarkable milestones since 2018,  as she makes way for Celebrity Apex , an Edge-Class ship,  in 2024.

cruise side profile

Launched in 2011 Celebrity Silhouette is the fourth ship in the five ship Solstice-Class built by Meyer Werft in Germany, she sailed on her maiden voyage on 23rd July of the same year.

On 28th April 2018 Celebrity Silhouette arrived in Southampton to start her maiden season from the UK port replacing an earlier Soltice-Class ship Celebrity Eclipse which sailed from Southampton for eight summer seasons its launch in 2010.

At the time she had an all white hull which was Celebrity Cruises colour scheme at the time.

28th June 2021 saw the newly-revitalised Celebrity Silhouette arrive in Southampton with the new blue hull colour.

Her Legacy is Recognized in Numbers

CHARTING THE SEAS

  • Silhouette has charted a staggering 230,000 nautical miles , equivalent to circumnavigating the globe almost nine times over.
  • She has also carried  199,164 guests from Southampton – if they were to lie head to toe, they would form a line approximately 318 miles long, which would almost stretch the width of England at its widest point (346 miles).

AN ENTERTAINING HISTORY

  • Entertainment has always been at the heart of the Celebrity experience. Over the past five years, Silhouette has hosted an astounding 4,226 theatre performances . That’s equivalent to just over 176 days of non-stop laughter and applause.
  • But that’s not all; Silhouette also ‘rocked the ship’ with a total of 24,390 hours of live music during her time sailing from the UK . Picture grooving to continuous tunes for an astonishing 1,016 days and 18 hours in total.
  • AT YOUR SERVICE
  • Behind the scenes, a dedicated crew of 11,997 members has ensured that every voyage was an unforgettable experience. These individuals could populate the coastal town of Minehead in Somerset.
  • Speaking of populations, Celebrity crew members have represented an average of 60 different nationalities within the team over the years. That’s more than the number of countries in Europe (which sits at 50!)
  • Silhouette created her own little slice of Europe at sea visiting varied port after varied port – 64 ports in total to be exact with the top three most visited ports being Copenhagen, Tallin and Stockholm .

TOASTS AND CELEBRATIONS

  • Love has truly been in the air – and at sea! Celebrity is proud to have celebrated 105 weddings on board since 2018 , averaging 21 weddings per year – making Silhouette a love-filled destination in her own right.
  • When it comes to toasting life’s moments guests have staggeringly popped nearly 100,000 (97,771 to be precise) bottles of fizz on board since 2018 . Cheers!
  • Then there is Silhouette’s Martini bar, which is so cool that it maintains an average temperature of -20 degrees . Temperatures like this are only found in the Arctic – making Silhouette’s bar a paradise for penguins (but you won’t get cold having a cocktail).

AN ICONIC ELEMENT

  • Finally – we must not forget the ship’s beautifully manicured lawn – engineered for her unique journey, fortified to endure the embrace of sea-borne elements. This lush expanse became legendary within the industry due to its unique location on a cruise ship – and has been mowed approximately 500 times since 2018.

Take a look at Celebrity Silhouette sailing from Southampton.

With endless horizons explored, breathtaking sunsets witnessed and countless memories created on her remarkable journey, the icon will be setting off to new waters. She makes way for Celebrity Apex, Celebrity’s the second ship in the Edge Series which is set to home port in Southampton from May 2024 for the European season.

Celebrity Apex will continue to revolutionise the way guests experience the world, all with the convenience of sailing directly from the UK.

Hurtigruten Expeditions to rebrand to HX from December

Emphasizing Sustainability and Adventure Travel

Oslo, Norway (September 19, 2023) – Hurtigruten Expeditions, the world’s foremost expedition cruise company, is set to undergo a significant transformation as it rebrands itself as HX. This rebranding, scheduled to launch this December, will introduce a fresh global brand identity featuring a new name and logo.

cruise side profile

HX, an homage to Hurtigruten Expeditions’ roots, represents an exciting evolution for the renowned travel brand. The change reflects the company’s commitment to maintaining its iconic position in the field of expedition cruising and sustainable travel.

Hurtigruten Norway, which recently celebrated its 130th anniversary of operating the original Norwegian Coastal Express, will retain its name but simplify it to “Hurtigruten.” This name harkens back to its origins in 1893, signifying “the fast route” in Norwegian. Both Hurtigruten Expeditions and Hurtigruten Norway are wholly owned by Hurtigruten Group AS and are part of a diverse portfolio of sustainable travel brands. This portfolio includes a range of land-based activities such as hotels, restaurants, and more, offered through Hurtigruten Svalbard, and a 25 percent stake in Ecuador-based Metropolitan Touring, renowned pioneers of sustainable travel in the Galápagos Islands.

Daniel Skjeldam, CEO of Hurtigruten Group, commented on the rebranding, saying, “The name Hurtigruten is synonymous with travel in Norway, just as it has been a renowned travel brand for over 130 years. Today’s evolution of our brand identities is the culmination of the work that started in 2021 when we split the two brands. HX will remain at the forefront of expedition cruising and sustainable travel as we continue to significantly grow its global presence while strengthening Hurtigruten’s iconic position on the Norwegian coast.”

HX’s commitment to expedition cruising extends to offering high-end itineraries to remote destinations worldwide. While traditionally known as the Polar experts, the company ventured into the Galápagos Islands last year, which has already become its third most popular destination. Moreover, HX will exclusively sail the West African archipelagos of both Cape Verde and the Bissagos Islands, presenting a thrilling new itinerary set to launch this fall.

The full implementation of the HX brand and logo is slated to begin in December, with updates across brochures, websites, and social channels. Over the next 18 months, the fleet’s six ships will undergo livery repainting to reflect the new identity.

This transformation follows the strategic separation of the two brands in 2020, enhancing their operational and commercial autonomy. This allowed for distinctly different guest experiences, and implementation began in 2021. Hurtigruten Group further adjusted its fleet, transferring Hurtigruten Expeditions’ MS Otto Sverdrup to Hurtigruten Norway as of January 2024, responding to growing demand. In the 2024-2025 Antarctica season, HX will offer a remarkable 36 departures across eight diverse itineraries spanning 12 to 24 days.

HX will continue to lead in expedition cruising, offering immersive small-ship experiences rooted in exploration, scientific research, expert-led lectures, and community advocacy. The Hurtigruten Group provides an extensive range of itinerary options, including Antarctica, the Galápagos Islands, Greenland, Svalbard, and the West African coast, along with Alaska, Iceland, Canada’s Northwest Passage, the British Isles, and many other exciting destinations. Notably, HX boasts one of the most sustainable fleets in the industry, featuring MS Roald Amundsen, the world’s first-ever battery-hybrid-powered ship, and its sister ship, MS Fridtjof Nansen.

Hurtigruten Group’s commitment to sustainability is unwavering, with a goal to become the world’s most sustainable adventure travel company by achieving emission-free travel by 2050. The company’s dedication to sustainability was exemplified by the recent announcement of Hurtigruten Norway’s zero-emission ship set to launch in 2030.

As HX, Hurtigruten Expeditions continues its legacy of pioneering adventure travel while further emphasizing sustainability, creating a promising future for exploration enthusiasts worldwide.

Ambassador Cruise Line Apology after passengers witness Faroes whale hunt

cruise side profile

Ambassador Cruise Line has issued an apology to passengers onboard its ship Ambition (formally AIDAmira) after many witnessed a so called traditional whale hunt or “Grindadráp” while the ship was docked in the Faroese capital of Torshavn last Sunday (9th July.)

cruise side profile

According to reports late in the afternoon, passenger’s onboard bore witness to the mass hunt and its messy aftermath, during which 78 long-finned pilot whales ( Globicephala melas ) were driven by a flotilla of over 40 small boats and jet-skis into shallow waters.

Passengers watched on in horror as a group of 150 people then hauled the animals ashore with hooks and others armed with killing lances slaughtered the animals in the space of 20 minutes. The aftermath of this event turned the sea around the shoreline blood red.

cruise side profile

Also onboard at the time were conservationists from the UK based whale and dolphin charity ORCA that is dedicated to the protection of whales, dolphins and porpoises (collectively known as cetaceans) in European waters.

cruise side profile

According to a blog post on their website the arrival of the Ambition coincided with the culmination of the sixth hunt of 2023, resulting in the slaughter of 78 pilot whales in the port area, including 9 tiny calves estimated as being no more than a month old. The charity also said the Faroes were “flaunting the hunt” in front of tourists, many of whom had specifically come to enjoy seeing whales and dolphins in their natural environment. They observed that some of the pilot whales, including a calf, took well over 30 seconds to die.

cruise side profile

The following day the cruise line issued an apology to guests in which it reiterated its own stance on whale hunting and ocean conservation in general.

“ Ambassador can confirm that the arrival of Ambition in Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands on Sunday 9 July coincided with the culmination of a hunt of 78 pilot whales in the port area. We were incredibly disappointed that this hunt occurred, particularly at a time when our ship was in port and have offered our sincere apologies to all those on board who may have witnessed this distressing occurrence. “ the cruise line stated.

In the statement the cruise line went on to say;

“ We are utterly opposed to the commercial hunting of whales and dolphins in the Faroes, or anywhere else come to that. While traditional hunts of this type have taken place for many years in the Faroe Islands to sustain local communities, we strongly object to this outdated practice, which we believe is now becoming commercial, with meats sold in local supermarkets, for example. “

Onboard Ambition for this cruise were where both Ambassador’s CEO, Christian Verhounig, and ORCA’s CEO, Sally Hamilton, who are both onboard hosting ‘in conversation with’ and FAQ sessions that offer guests the opportunity to learn more about our journeys in sustainable travel & tourism and conservation.

The cruise line has been working with the charity since 2021, and the partnership includes the first-ever cruise line “Anti-Whaling” campaign with Ambassador calling on the Faroese government to ban the practice altogether.

cruise side profile

What is a Grindadráp or Grind

Whaling has taken place in the Faroe Islands for the past 1,000 years. Every year, annual hunts – known as the grindadráp – takes place, commonly known as “the grind.” It typically takes place between July and September and can happen at any time, when a pod of whales or dolphins are spotted at any one of the 26 designated killing bays around the islands.

Once spotted locals use boats and jet skis to herd the whales into a designated bay. They then use hooks, ropes, and mønustingari (a Faroese knife designed to cut through whales’ spines) to capture and kill the animals. According to the Faroese the hunts are non-commercial e.g the meat is not exported and is kept for themselves and distributed amongst the community as free food, however there have been accounts of carcasses being left to rot or being dumped.

According to the non-profit marine conservation Sea Shepherd Faroese hunts lead to the death of up to 1,000 pilot whales and other dolphins a year, the hunts are very stressful and brutal for the animals with some taking many minutes to die.

In 2021, the Faroese government was forced to launch a review after 1,423 dolphins were killed in just one hunt. Following this, they announced an annual catch limit of 500 dolphins. Pilot whales are also a protected species in the EU.

For many years there have been calls from many environmental organisations including Greenpeace, ORCA, Sea Shepherd, Whale and Dolphin Conservation together with a growing number of Faroese for these out dated and cruel hunts to stop.

The Ambition was sailing an 11-night “Iceland’s Land of Ice & Fire” itinerary that departed Belfast on Thursday, July 6, and called at Liverpool prior to the stop in Torshavn.

Together with Ambassador the following cruise lines all have ships visiting Torshavn this year AIDA, Azamara Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Fred Olsen, Explora Journey’s, National Geographic, Holland America, Hurtigruten, Oceania Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Phoenix Reisen, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea, Viking Cruises and Windstar Cruises.

I personally think its time for the industry along with CLIA to look at whether it thinks its still acceptable to visit the Faroes as a destination while this practice continues.

What do you think? should cruise lines boycott the Faroes? let me know in the comments.

What Side Of A Cruise Ship Is Port Side

what-side-of-a-cruise-ship-is-port-side

Introduction

When embarking on a cruise vacation, you may find yourself wondering about the different sides of the ship and their significance. One side that often piques curiosity is the “port side.” If you’re not familiar with maritime terminology, you may wonder what exactly the port side is and why it’s worth considering when choosing your cabin.

In simple terms, the port side refers to the left side of a cruise ship when facing forward. It is the opposite side of the starboard side, which is the right side of the ship. These designations have been used in seafaring traditions for centuries and continue to be relevant in modern cruise ship practices.

Understanding the distinction between the port and starboard sides can be useful when navigating a large cruise ship or when determining the best view for your cabin. By knowing which side is the port side, you can make an informed decision when selecting your accommodations and enjoy the benefits that come with it.

In this article, we will delve deeper into the subject, exploring the significance of the port side on a cruise ship. We’ll discuss how to identify the port side, factors influencing its allocation, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of choosing a cabin on this side. So, let’s set sail and unravel the mysteries of the port side.

Definition of Port Side

The port side of a cruise ship refers to the left side of the vessel when standing at the front and facing forward. It is the side that faces the port, which is the area where the ship docks when it arrives at a destination. The term “port” is derived from the old English word “portweard,” meaning the side of the ship that is closest to the port during docking.

Traditionally, the port side of a ship is identified by the color red. This helps crew members and passengers differentiate between the port and starboard sides, especially in low light or foggy conditions. Ensuring clear communication and understanding of the ship’s orientation is crucial for safety and effective operation while at sea.

The port side is considered the “official” left side of the ship and is designated for specific purposes. On larger cruise ships, you will find amenities such as dining rooms, entertainment venues, and public areas situated on both the port and starboard sides. However, each side may have its own unique features and attractions.

It’s important to note that the port side remains the same regardless of the direction the ship is sailing. Whether the ship is moving forward or in reverse, the port side will always be on the left when facing the front of the vessel. This unchanging designation simplifies navigation and allows for consistent communication among crew members and passengers.

Definition of Starboard Side

In contrast to the port side, the starboard side of a cruise ship refers to the right side when facing forward. It is the side of the ship that faces away from the port. The term “starboard” originated from the Old English word “stéorbord,” meaning the side of the ship where the steering paddle was located in ancient times.

Similar to the port side, the starboard side has its own distinctive color to aid in visual identification. The color green is traditionally associated with the starboard side, serving as a visual cue for distinguishing it from the port side. This color coding helps ensure clear communication and prevents confusion, particularly during critical operations such as docking or navigating through narrow passages.

Just as the port side, the starboard side of a cruise ship also contains various amenities and public areas. While some facilities may be shared between the port and starboard sides, there might be slight differences in terms of layout, design, or specific attractions on each side. It is worth noting that the starboard side remains consistent regardless of the ship’s direction, mirroring the unchanging nature of the port side.

Understanding the distinction between the port and starboard sides is crucial for both crew members and passengers, as it ensures seamless navigation and efficient communication throughout the ship. By familiarizing yourself with these maritime terminologies, you can better orient yourself and make the most of your cruise ship experience.

Determining Port Side on a Cruise Ship

Identifying the port side on a cruise ship is relatively straightforward. When facing the front of the ship, also known as the bow, the port side will be on your left. This can be remembered by associating the word “left” with “port” since both words contain four letters. Additionally, you can recall that “port” and “left” both start with the letter ‘L.’

Another method to determine the port side is by looking at the ship’s layout. Typically, cruise ships have clear signage indicating the port and starboard sides in public areas. Look for signs displaying the words “port” or “left” to guide you in the right direction. Crew members are also readily available to assist if you have any confusion regarding the ship’s orientation.

In your cabin, you can also use the directional information provided in the room. Many cruise ship cabins have indicators, usually in the form of arrows or symbols, that denote the location of the port side. This can help you orient yourself even without a direct view of the outside.

If you find yourself on a deck without clear signage or cabin indicators, you can take a moment to observe the ship’s movement while facing forward. As the ship cruises, landmarks or structures on land can serve as a point of reference to determine the left side, which corresponds to the port side.

Overall, there are several ways to determine the port side on a cruise ship, including visual cues, signage, cabin indicators, and observing the ship’s movement. By being aware of which side is the port side, you can better navigate the ship and take full advantage of the amenities and views offered on that side.

Factors Affecting Port Side Allocation on a Cruise Ship

The allocation of cabins and amenities on the port side of a cruise ship can be influenced by various factors. While not all ships follow the same layout, there are a few common considerations that can affect the distribution of facilities on the port side:

  • Location of Ports: The positioning of ports of call can play a significant role in the allocation of amenities on the port side. Cruise lines often aim to offer scenic views of the ports and landmarks during arrival and departure. As a result, cabins with windows or balconies on the port side may be more desirable for passengers seeking picturesque views.
  • Market Preferences: Cruise lines take into account the preferences of their target market when allocating cabins and facilities on the ship. For example, if the majority of their passengers prefer port-side views or have expressed a preference for cabins on that side, the cruise line may allocate more amenities and accommodations accordingly.
  • Balance and Symmetry: Cruise ships strive to maintain balance and symmetry in their design and distribution of features. Therefore, they may allocate similar amenities and cabins on both the port and starboard sides to ensure an equitable experience for all passengers. This can create a cohesive and visually pleasing ship layout.
  • Operational Considerations: The operational needs of the ship can also influence the allocation of facilities on the port side. For instance, certain areas such as gangways, embarkation and disembarkation points, and loading areas may be located on the port side for efficient handling during port visits.
  • Accessibility and Convenience: Cruise lines may consider the ease of access and convenience when assigning facilities to the port side. This can include placing popular amenities such as restaurants, bars, or entertainment venues on the port side to ensure convenient access from various areas of the ship.

It is important to note that the allocation of amenities and cabins on the port side can vary from one cruise ship to another. Factors such as ship size, target market, itinerary, and specific design choices can all influence the distribution of facilities. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to review the ship’s layout and deck plans to get a better understanding of the specific allocation on the port side before selecting your accommodations.

Advantages of Port Side

Choosing a cabin on the port side of a cruise ship can offer several advantages, which can enhance your overall cruise experience. Here are some key benefits of opting for the port side:

  • Scenic Views: One of the primary advantages of selecting a cabin on the port side is the potential for stunning views. When the ship docks at ports of call, passengers on the port side often enjoy picturesque vistas of the coastline, landmarks, and other points of interest. This can be especially rewarding when visiting scenic destinations like Alaska, the Mediterranean, or the Norwegian Fjords.
  • Sunsets and Sunrises: If you enjoy witnessing spectacular sunsets or sunrises, the port side can be an excellent choice. Depending on the ship’s itinerary, the port side may offer optimal views of the sun sinking below the horizon or casting vibrant colors across the sky as you wake up and start your day.
  • Less Noise and Disturbances: Another advantage of selecting a cabin on the port side is the potential for less noise and disturbances. Since the port side generally faces away from the dock and the hustle and bustle of the pier, it may offer a quieter and more serene environment for relaxation.
  • Privacy: In some cases, the port side cabins may provide more privacy compared to cabins on the starboard side. This can be especially true when the ship is docked, as cabins on the port side may have a better line of sight to the shore, thus reducing the likelihood of being overlooked by other passengers or nearby ships.
  • Ideal for Early Risers: If you are an early riser or enjoy starting your day with a peaceful stroll or workout on the ship’s deck, the port side can be advantageous. As the ship typically docks early in the morning, cabins on the port side allow you to step out onto the deck and enjoy the serene surroundings and fresh sea air.

Keep in mind that the advantages of the port side can vary depending on the ship’s itinerary, docking locations, and specific design choices. It’s always a good idea to review the ship’s deck plans and consider your preferences before making your final cabin selection.

Disadvantages of Port Side

While there are several advantages to choosing a cabin on the port side of a cruise ship, it’s important to consider the potential disadvantages as well. Here are a few factors to keep in mind:

  • Limited Views on Some Itineraries: Depending on the specific itinerary, the port side may not always offer the best views. In certain destinations, the ship may dock in a way that obstructs the view from the port side cabins. It’s essential to research the ports of call and check the ship’s itinerary to ensure that the port side will provide the desired scenic views.
  • Noon Sun Exposure: The port side cabins can be exposed to more direct sunlight during the afternoon hours, especially on cruises in the northern hemisphere. This can result in the cabin becoming warmer compared to those on the starboard side. However, modern cruise ships are equipped with advanced climate control systems to mitigate temperature differences.
  • Distance from Port Activities: In some cases, the cabins on the port side may be located farther away from the main port areas or attractions. This can result in longer walking distances or the need to rely on shuttle services to reach the desired destinations. If being close to the port activities and attractions is a priority for you, it’s worth considering this potential disadvantage.
  • Noise from Docking Procedures: When the ship is docking or departing from a port, there may be increased noise and vibrations on the port side. This can be more noticeable in cabins situated towards the front or rear of the ship. However, the duration of these disturbances is usually temporary and should not significantly impact your overall cruise experience.
  • Shoreline Visibility: While the port side may offer stunning views during port visits, it could also mean that the shoreline may not be visible from the cabin while cruising at sea. If witnessing the open ocean or distant coastlines is a priority for you, cabins on the starboard side or other areas of the ship may be better suited to fulfill this preference.

Ultimately, the disadvantages of the port side can be subjective and depend on individual preferences and priorities. It’s essential to consider these factors and weigh them against the advantages when selecting your cabin to ensure the best possible cruise experience.

Tips for Choosing the Port Side on a Cruise Ship

If you’re considering selecting a cabin on the port side of a cruise ship, here are some useful tips to keep in mind:

  • Research the Itinerary: Before making a decision, carefully review the ship’s itinerary and the ports of call. Determine which destinations are known for their scenic views or landmarks visible from the ship. This will help you gauge the value of choosing a cabin on the port side for each specific port of call.
  • Consider Your Priorities: Think about your priorities for the cruise. If you value privacy and quieter surroundings, cabins on the port side may be more suitable as they face away from the hustle and bustle of the dock. If you’re an early riser or enjoy scenic views during port arrivals and departures, the port side can offer a favorable experience.
  • Review Deck Plans: Take the time to study the deck plans of the cruise ship. Look for amenities and public areas that are exclusively available or concentrated on the port side. This can help you determine the convenience and proximity of desired facilities to your chosen cabin.
  • Consider Balcony Cabins: If you enjoy spending time outdoors and appreciating the views, consider booking a balcony cabin on the port side. Balconies offer private spaces where you can relax and soak in the picturesque scenes, especially during port visits or scenic cruising.
  • Consult with a Travel Agent: If you’re unsure about choosing the port side or have specific preferences for your cruise experience, consult with a knowledgeable travel agent. They can provide insights on the ship, itinerary, and cabin selection to help you make an informed decision.
  • Be Flexible with Cabin Location: Keep in mind that the view and advantages of the port side are not limited to specific decks or cabin locations. While cabins located closer to the bow or stern may offer more unobstructed views, there can still be enjoyable port side cabins situated in other areas of the ship. Remaining flexible with cabin location can provide more options and potentially better pricing.

Remember, the decision to choose the port side ultimately depends on your personal preferences and priorities for your cruise experience. By considering these tips and conducting thorough research, you can make an informed choice that aligns with your desires for a memorable vacation.

The port side of a cruise ship holds its own allure and advantages, making it a consideration for those seeking an enhanced experience during their cruise vacation. Understanding the distinction between the port and starboard sides is crucial when selecting a cabin or exploring the ship’s amenities.

By choosing a cabin on the port side, you can enjoy several benefits. The potential for stunning views during port visits, the opportunity to witness captivating sunsets and sunrises, and the added privacy and tranquility away from the bustling dock are just a few advantages worth considering. Additionally, the port side can offer convenience for early risers and a sense of navigation familiarity throughout the cruise.

Of course, it’s important to be aware of the potential disadvantages as well. Limited views on certain itineraries, exposure to direct sunlight during the afternoon, and distance from port activities are factors that should be considered. However, these disadvantages can often be mitigated by research, selecting the right cabin location, and understanding the ship’s specific layout.

When deciding whether to choose the port side, it’s essential to consider your own preferences, priorities, and the specific itinerary of your cruise. By researching the ports of call, reviewing the ship’s deck plans, and consulting with a travel agent if needed, you can make an informed decision that aligns with your desires for a memorable cruise experience.

In the end, whether you opt for the port side or any other side of the ship, focus on enjoying the journey, making lasting memories, and embracing the unique experiences that a cruise vacation has to offer. Bon voyage!

Caribbean Princess cruise ship

Caribbean Princess deck plan review at CruiseMapper provides newest cruise deck plans (2024-2025-2026 valid floor layouts of the vessel) extracted from the officially issued by Princess Cruises deckplan pdf (printable version).

Each of the Caribbean Princess cruise ship deck plans are conveniently combined with a legend (showing cabin codes) and detailed review of all the deck's venues and passenger-accessible indoor and outdoor areas. A separate link provides an extensive information on Caribbean Princess staterooms (cabins and suites), including photos, cabin plans and amenities by room type and category.

Caribbean Princess (2004-built, last refurbished in 2022 April) is the sixth of the nine Grand-class Princess cruise ships – together with Crown , Diamond , Emerald , Golden (Pacific Adventure) , Grand , Ruby , Sapphire and Star (Pacific Encounter) .

Caribbean Princess cruise ship deck plan shows a total of 1569 cabins for 3138 passengers (lower berths/max capacity is 3766) served by 1200 crew-staff. The boat has 18 decks (15 passenger-accessible, 9 with cabins), 12 restaurants and bars, 6 lounges, 5 swimming pools (+ 2 splash), 7 outdoor Jacuzzis, 14 elevators.

Passenger-use launderettes (laundromats) are located on decks 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 14. These are self-service laundry facilities with ironing boards and detergent being provided.

Deckplan changes 2019 refurbishment review

During drydock 2019 refurbishment (June, done in Freeport Bahamas ), on the liner was installed fleet's first-ever waterpark - Reef Splash Zone (without waterslides!). Located aft-portside on Deck 17/Sports Deck (beneath the ramp leading to Skywalkers Nightclub on Deck 18), the water park was added as a new section to the original aft swimming pool (Pirate's View). The redesigned area now includes a large-sized Splashpad (outdoor water playground) fitted with splash pool, water cannons, water sprays, showers, interactive whale-like structure (with a "raining" fluke). The surrounding lounging area (designed for families with kids) was updated with new patio furniture (comfortable sectionals, chairs, sunloungers, padded garden couches with tables), new fixtures and finishes. The existing swimming pool, whirlpool hot tub (large outdoor Jacuzzi) and poolside bar (Morgan's Bar) were also renovated.

Princess Cruises Caribbean Princess water park (Reef Splash Zone)

The newly-added Game Zone hosts family fun competitions and features oversized backyard games (the likes of Jenga, Cornhole, Connect Four). At Morgan's Bar (kids-friendly) parents can enjoy mocktails and cocktails. The surrounding lounge area is furnished with comfortable sectionals. The water-park is protected by wind panels (throughout the area) while its Shade Canopy (aft-starboard) is a sun-protected seating area covered with canvas canopies. The music system and lighting were upgraded (to the steps and swimming pool) and new wall lighting was installed for the evening open-deck parties, activities (including stargazing and educational kids programs) and themed events.

On Deck 16, the Spa complex (forward) was renovated, redesigned and updated with contemporary artworks and signage. On Deck 16 aft, at Camp Discovery Youth Center (kids-only complex for children 3-12 yo), the Outdoor Play Area was upgraded with an interactive water table for current itinerary/destination-themed fun activities.

Deckplan changes 2017 refurbishment review

During the ship's 2017 drydock refurbishment (March 25 - April 5, done in Freeport Bahamas ) resulted in the following changes:

  • New kids area ("Camp Discovery") was added aft on deck 17.
  • Pool deck's MUTS screen ("Movies Under the Stars" / 850-seat outdoor movie theatre) was upgraded.
  • The number of interconnecting cabins (for families) was increased with an additional 87 pairs.
  • (Lido Deck 15) "Horizon Court" was replaced by "World Fresh Marketplace". The ship's new buffet restaurant now has new decor, improved layout and more food options. Breakfast includes 24-hour cereal station, designer pancake station, hot cereal choices (like shrimp & grits and polenta porridge). Lunch includes hand-crafted sandwiches, regionally-inspired soups, a wide selection of meats (sausages, hams, roasted). Dinner includes family comfort foods, PB&J bar ("Peanut Butter and Jelly"). Nighttime buffet offerings include live-action cooking station (stir-fry, customized pasta, salads).
  • (Lido Deck 15) the ship now has 2 casual specialty restaurants formed from the old "Cafe Caribe". Both restaurants are designed for families with kids. The first at-fee restaurant ("Planks BBQ") serves family-style meat planks (ribs, beef, sausages, chicken) plus sides (fries, chili, coleslaw, charred toast, dill pickles). Dinner here is served and costs USD 12 pp. Free buffet-style breakfast and lunch here include customizable breakfast bowls, signature soup, fresh-made salads, fork & knife sandwiches. The second at-fee restaurant ("Steamers Seafood" offers steamers with regionally sourced seafood (Black and Blue Mussels, Scallops and Sausage, Classic Clams, Crab-stuffed Flounder). Dinner is served and costs USD 12 pp. Free buffet-style breakfast and lunch choices include egg dishes and ramen bowls.
  • Following the 2017 refurbishment, the ship's pool deck (15) offers 4 outdoor dining options. "The Salty Dog Grill" (formerly "Trident Grill") offers “The Ernesto” burger (best at sea), other specialty beef burgers (with handmade patties and buns), also Street Tacos (with grilled chipotle-lime chicken or roasted sweet potato, corn tortillas), fries and classic hot dogs. "Slice Pizzeria" (formerly "Prego Pizzeria") offers Neapolitan-style pizzas, Deep Dish Focaccia (with marinara, meatballs, cheese), California Artisanal Toast, Sliced Stromboli (calzone filled with deli meats and cheese). "Coffee & Cones" (formerly "Scoops Bar") offers gourmet ice cream sandwiches, free ice cream cones, specialty coffees and teas. "THE MIX" (formerly "Blackbeard’s Bar") / poolside drinks bar) was updated and redesigned.
  • The specialty Italian Trattoria restaurant Sabatini’s (formerly "SHARE by Curtis Stone", on Promenade Deck 7) was redesigned, debuting a new menu with antipasti and handmade pasta dishes by celebrity chef Angelo Auriana, Sabatini’s new menu was implemented fleetwide in 2017. Angelo Auriana is an Executive Chef and partner in the Los Angeles' Italian restaurants "The Factory Kitchen" and "Officine BRERA". Chef Auriana's dishes are based on using old-world grains (like buckwheat and durum wheat) giving them the protein strength necessary to keep the house-made pasta's shape. He also uses numerous non-traditional herbs (like mints and marjoram).

All stateroom beds (a total of 3200 units) were replaced with the company's signature "Princess Luxury Beds”.

Carnival's Ocean Medallion technology was installed in September 2018.

MSC ships - bulge / retractions along side profile of the ship

Do y’all know why some of the MSC ships and some of the other lines newer ships have those bulge outs along mid ship?  Why the ship aren’t “flush” some portion of it stick out while portions of doesn’t and is instead retracted, when looking along the side of the ship

i initially thought perhaps for the life boats but that doesn’t seem to be case. Is it for aerodynamic reasons?  Purely aesthetic design? Perhaps to help with wind resistance or stability?

I would imagine there’s some reason for it but I have absolutely no clue why this design instead of just making it all flush along the ship to have as wide of a space to fit as many cabins as possible and to have those longggggg hallways without any zig zagging like an older ship

I might not fully understand your question. Do you mean why many news ships are narrower on the lower decks and then wider often from deck 7 and up? That is because in several canals and port entrances there is a specific max. width on the waterline and some storeys up, but higher up ships can hang over.

Or do you mean that lengthwise mostly on the middle the superstructure (above promenade deck) is wider than the more forward portion or aft portion? That is often to give room to wider elevator banks. For example, if you look at MSC Seaview's deck plan, you can see the elevator banks are in the front and back of the wider portion. Further forward from the most forward elevator bank, the superstructure gets slimmer. Same behind the aft elevator bank.

It's simply to replicate the shape of us overfed and under exercised passengers, so that we don't look out of place!  😉

Haha

but even so, couldn’t they have added another row of rooms by making the ship “wide” all throughout?  But maybe they didn’t want to add more insides instead of more balcony room??

I have often wondered this myself.   The cabins on the upper decks on the "in" sections are really not all that desireable as they have the deck above hanging over.   That are a lot of ships with this design so there must be a compelling  reason.

My guess is that cabins on the bulge out part are slightly larger and therefore attract a premum by being classed as deluxe balconies

I think the elevator and staircase explanation makes a lot of sense….especially since MSC and other cruise lines just can’t start packing in more inside rooms if they made it “wide” throughout the the ship.

I suppose factors like public space square footage, lifeboat capacities, dining capacity, crew area and additional crew, etc gets all compounded and considered before they can pack in additional inside rooms

What’s a Side to Side Cruise and Why Should I Book One?

by Prof. Cruise · January 22, 2023

cruise side profile

Most veteran cruisers know what a back to back (b2b) cruise is, where you stay on the same ship for consecutive cruises (check out my Guide to B2B Cruising if you’re new to the idea). And many, like me, have dreamed of retiring to a b2b2b2b2b2b2b2…until death. But I’ve recently changed my plans, and you might consider doing so too once you learn about side to side (s2s) cruising.

What’s a Side to Side Cruise?

It’s not a new dance move your kid will teach you only so they can laugh when you look like an octopus trying to navigate their first venture onto land wearing four pairs of ill fitting roller skates. A side to side cruise is when you disembark one ship only to embark on another ship at the same port on the same day. I have my first one planned for a few weeks from now when I’ll disembark the Discovery Princess then walk next door to immediately board the Celebrity Solstice at the San Pedro Cruise Terminal in Los Angeles.

While I suspect the vast majority of my readers are currently plotting how to fake an extended illness so they can get off work long enough to try it too, a few may be skeptical. So allow me to convince you…

Why Should I Book a Side to Side Cruise?

1. for a vacation from your vacation..

The transition back to regular life after a cruise can be exhausting and cause one to utter that well-worn phrase: “I need a vacation from my vacation!” Solution? Book another cruise! A “recovery cruise,” so to speak. This is the primary reason I’m trying my first side to side. Let me explain.

I have a kid. Who will be joining me on the first cruise. And will probably try teaching me a new dance move. Now while no one wants to admit that they low-key dislike their children at times, one doesn’t need to be strapped to the lie detector machine to acknowledge that vacationing with children isn’t always super relaxing. Yes, it’s fun to see their excitement and watch them take in new experiences and make memories as a family and blah, blah, blah. But it’s also work! So I’m sending my son and husband home (“Bye guys, I’ll miss you!” And the lie detector says, THAT’S a lie!) and hopping on a solo cruise so I can relax and unwind after my first cruise. (That has to be the most privileged, first-world thing I have ever said – let me be clear how humbled and thankful I am to have a life that allows me to say that. And DO that!)

Okay, but why a side to side instead of a back to back?

2. To avoid boredom .

I’ve never been bored on a cruise. And my only concern about an extended cruise on the same ship is missing my dog. However, I also like the idea of mixing things up a bit. By switching ships, one can experience different activities and entertainment, different restaurants and bars, different scenery, and a new crew. On a back to back, you’ll likely experience the same menus, same activities and entertainment, same crew, and maybe even the same ports. You can really mix things up by switching to an entirely different cruise line and itinerary (which is what I’m doing).

3. To create a custom itinerary.

Side by side cruising can allow you to create your dream itinerary. Or at least a really cool itinerary not offered on a single ship. My side by side cruise takes me to both Mexico and the California Coast.

4. Because you can’t decide between two ships.

Book them both! Plus you’ll achieve to your goal of sailing every cruise ship at sea faster if you book side to sides instead of back to backs.

5. To justify overeating.

Walking from one ship to the other has to burn at least enough calories to justify a third dessert at dinner each night, right?

6. To hide.

This one doesn’t really apply to me because I only ever need to hide from my family and they’re aware of my plans to board the Celebrity Solstice after our tearful (ha!) goodbye. But maybe you’re trying to elude someone like the police or an assassin. Ship hopping will make you harder to track!

Too out there? Okay, but speaking of getting caught, you might be wondering: that all sounds good, but what’s the catch?

What’s the Catch? Disadvantages of Side to Side Cruising

While I’m generally sold on side to side cruising, there are a few disadvantages when compared to back to back cruising. First, you have to pack up after your first cruise. My second favorite thing to do on a back to back cruise is to take a photo of the exterior of my cabin door on the last night and post it to social media with the caption: what’s missing from this photo? Then I keep people in suspense for a few hours before following up with: MY LUGGAGE! I also enjoy gloating at dinner when my table mates ask about my plans for the evening: NOT PACKING!

But on a side to side, you have to pack and move your stuff over to a new ship and cabin.

My first favorite thing to do on a back to back is to use that glorious time after debarkation and before embarkation when I have the ship almost totally to myself to secure a prime lounger that I will hog all week because no one, passenger or crew, is brave enough to move the seedy romance novel I have reserving it for fear that someone might think it theirs (you should consider that one of my best cruising tips, btw).

On a side to side, you’ll have to sprint to that prime lounger on embarkation day with your seedy romance novel only to discover a back to backer left their smelly gym shorts on it!

You’ll recall that earlier I said my plans for retirement have changed. In light of discovering side to side cruising, my new plan is b2b s2s b2b s2s b2b…death. Who’s with me? And with that…

Class Dismissed!

I. INTRODUCTION

Hi there! Just wanted to give you a little heads-up. This is a tutorial and a guide on how to draw side profiles based on my experience.

It is designed primarily for beginners, but artists of all levels are welcome to join in!

I'm going to share with you a quick and easy tutorial on how to draw a simple head profile and it's also a guide to help you understand more about the side profile. It is a pretty simple guide/tutorial.

  • About drawing side profiles:

Each person’s head has a unique shape - so every face and side profile will be different. Another thing is stylization, it can be different depending on the artist’s style too. So be sure to have your drawing references.

*NOTE*: A single standard of facial aesthetic is not appropriate for application to diverse racial and ethnic groups.

Here’s an example to show what I mean by using Clip Studio Paint EX head model.

With the head model available in Clip Studio Paint EX, you have complete freedom to adjust the facial features as per your preference.

II. SIDE PROFILE FEATURES

When it comes to the side profile, there are a few key things that stand out. Some of these include the shape of your jawline, how prominent your chin is, the height of your nose, and even your hairline. There are a handful of features that can define what you look like from the side.

More examples:

Eyebrow socket shape

Upper lip height

Ear positioning and shape

1. The guidelines

It's handy to have a guideline when you're new to drawing a side profile. It helps you get familiar with the process and makes it easier to start off on the right foot.

Using a guideline when you’re starting is a very useful tool when you are just being familiar with drawing a side profile.

Start with the basic shapes:

First step is the construction of the face. My starting point is to sketch out a rough circle first. Usually, it’s never a perfect circle, but you just need something that resemble a circle

From then on, I’ll sketch in a cross ( + ) (The cross: It is the point where the brow line crosses the middle of the face, and a vertical line splits the circle down the ear and to the chin.) across the circle, then the jaw line and eye/ear line.

After that, I draw the nose at the eye line and the ear in the middle of the circle.

In the  following, I sketch the eye, eyebrow and also some more details for the ear.

Finally, I erase the guidelines and draw more over the sketch I made.

2. The differences between masculine and feminine features of a profile

  • The shapes and lines: Sharp, soft, round, hard conner, ect…

When it is about 'feminine' and 'masculine' lines in design. We refer to the different qualities they possess. Generally, masculine lines are more sharp and abrupt, while the latter boasts a more softer and smooth flow.

But the truth is, these lines aren't mutually exclusive - they can coexist in the same design! Think of it as a spectrum, with different combinations of traits. Some lines may be sharp and abrupt but also ease into the next. Others may be angular, but not entirely. At the end of the day, the possibilities are endless!

Straight lines and sharp corners for the masculine side profile

Rounded curves and softened corners for the feminine side profile

*NOTE* : It can combined however you what.

III. DRAWING A SIDE PROFILE

3. proportion / stylization / same face syndrome.

It is prudent to keep in mind the principles of proportion, stylization, and avoiding the same face syndrome while designing.

Nonetheless, one should not fret about adhering to them stringently. Our visual perception is attuned to objects that appear harmonious and authentic, hence it is advisable to rely on our innate instincts.

With slight adjustments to the placement of guidelines, you can create a multitude of facial variations.

Just by changing the guidelines, you can already make different kinds of faces.

Don't be afraid to mix it up! By playing around with different techniques like changing face proportions and using shape guidelines, you can bring a fresh and unique feel to your artwork. Open yourself up to new shapes, like rectangles, triangles, and circles, and have fun experimenting with them in your side profile drawings.

TIP: To add diversity to your art, consider exploring various shapes such as rectangles, triangles, and circles in your drawings.

IV. FINAL WORDS/ CONCLUSION

Drawing a side profile is all about embracing uniqueness and experimenting with your style - there's no right or wrong way to do it! But if you want to see real progress, you need to learn how to practice effectively. This saves you time and sometimes it can guarantees better results.

You should study many artists works, to see how do make it. When studying professional artwork, don't just trace it - take the time to break it down into its fundamental components. This will help you identify the big and small shapes that make up its essence.

So keep honing your skills and perfecting your craft. I hope this guide has given you some helpful tips for starting your journey to creating amazing side profiles. Remember, have fun with it and don't be afraid to try new things! 😽

TIP: Don’t be afraid to use references, use a lot of them.
