Picard Season 3 Villain Vadic Has a Surprising Star Trek Legacy

At last, Star Trek: Picard has revealed its big bad for season 3. A bounty hunter with a starship that’s armed to the teeth, Amanda Plummer’s Vadic makes her debut in “Disengage” and immediately leaves her mark on Star Trek canon. Not only do we learn that her ship, the Shrike, is capable of slinging enemy ships at other enemy ships but that she’s not even remotely afraid of Starfleet or legendary officers like Jean-Luc Picard. In fact, Vadic seems to relish this chance meeting with the “synthetic” Starfleet admiral.

But it’s not the old man she’s truly after. As we learn in the episode, it’s Dr. Beverly Crusher’s son, Jack Jr., who is being relentlessly hunted by Vadic and her masked crew. Jack (Ed Speleer) is a smuggler with a bounty on his head for crimes committed outside of Federation space and Vadic’s come to collect. The episode seems to tease there’s a bit more to Vadic’s mission than meets the eye, and perhaps it has something to do with the hour’s biggest reveal: that Jack is not just Beverly’s son but also Jean-Luc’s child ! Has Vadic manipulated events to get both Picard Sr. and Jr. on the same ship?

Picard showrunner Terry Matalas has teased that there are more layers to Vadic than what’s presented at the start of the season, describing her to SFX magazine ( via Trek Movie ) as a “bit of a mystery” who has a “deep-seated yet sympathetic reason for wanting vengeance against Picard and the Federation.”

“We really wanted a major villain, for Vadic, that she should be a larger than life, classic Star Trek villain who had her own reasons for doing what she does. And when you heard them, you’d say, ‘You know, she might have a point,’” Matalas told SFX ahead of the season premiere.

There are already plenty of theories floating around about who Vadic might truly be. Some fans think she might be secretly connected to another The Next Generation alum from an alternate universe. Or perhaps she’s related to Shinzon in some way or is a descendant of the Soongs? Is she also related to Picard?

Whatever the case, Vadic actor Amanda Plummer brings her own Star Trek history to the role that won’t be obvious on screen. As you might have guessed from her surname, the actor is the daughter of the late, great Christopher Plummer, who’s best known to Trek fans as the scheming General Chang, the main villain of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country .

You’ll of course remember that Chang was the Shakespeare-loving Klingon general who tried to sabotage peace talks between the Federation and the Klingon Empire until he was eventually thwarted by Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise. That hard-earned peace would ultimately mark the final mission for The Original Series crew on the big screen, and result in the new status quo that saw Klingons cooperating with the Federation in The Next Generation .

Vadic isn’t Klingon, of course, so the General Chang connection will very likely just remain a fun behind-the-scenes easter egg, a wink at longtime fans of the movies. That said, Star Trek characters have been known to alter their appearances to hide their true identities in the past…

We’ll find out what’s up with Vadic soon enough as Star Trek: Picard season 3 continues its run on Paramount+.

Yes, we’re enjoying seeing all our Next Generation favorites this season on Star Trek: Picard … but we’re also enjoying getting to know their latest adversary.

This week’s episode introduced Amanda Plummer — a celebrated actress with credits like Pulp Fiction , The Fisher King and So I Married an Axe Murderer — as Vadic, a cackling bounty hunter intent on taking custody of Beverly’s son ( and Jean-Luc’s son !) Jack Crusher. With her gleeful malevolence and boldly literary proclamations, Vadic is already making a place for herself in the pantheon of all-time great Star Trek villains. In fact, she most closely resembles the vengeful Klingon warrior General Chang from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country , a role played by Amanda’s own father Christopher Plummer.

They did hit a slight snag with Plummer’s availability, however, Matalas recalls: “Amanda was shooting another show, Ratched , so she came in after we had already shot the majority of Episodes 1 through 5. So we didn’t know who was going to appear on the viewscreen. By the first rehearsal, we were all holding our breath, and [when] she gave that performance, people were hugging each other, people were congratulating each other. We were so thrilled to have a classic, larger-than-life Star Trek villain.”

Vadic isn’t just a one-dimensional bad guy, though, Matalas adds, hinting that she “has her own story and reasons to sympathize with her as well.” Why is she so dead-set on capturing Jack Crusher? “She has very personal reasons, but she also answers to a higher power, let’s just say.” And as far as how Vadic fits into the larger Star Trek universe, “she absolutely connects to canon,” Matalas promises. “It’s coming up.”

So far this is the strongest season yet. Can’t wait to see where they take this.

Calling it now: She answers to Sela. Someone has to hire the bounty hunter.

Larger-Than-Life usually means exaggerated and over-the-top and is rarely ever a good thing. Her demeanor in epsidoe 2 was already slighty awkward and pointing in that direction. Lets hope the rest of her is grounded and nuanced… but I am not holding my breath.

How can you see we’ve seen all the Next Generation cast, when m so far it’s only been Riker and Crusher????

Worf appeared in episode 2 as Raffi’s handler. LaForge is expected to appear as is Lore.

And with Will, Deanna can’t be too far behind

Deanna Troi was already in the show….

And she will be again this season. The previews have already shown her

During the original run of TNG there were many mentions by Beverly of something she needed to tell Jean Luc.

Combine that with her disappearance in TNG season 2 and that might explain Jack’s origin.

That would be incredible, if that’s when he was conceived!

Nope. Anything but a classic villain for any show or film, let alone Trek. Episode 2 was all the weaker for her Batman ’66 style acting. Her and Rafi are the weak links so far, everyone else has brought it, especially Frakes and Stashwick.

Too bad the 1st & 2nd seasons of Picard were as good as this 3rd season. It really needed all the Next Generation characters and much less artsyness.

she answers to the alien parasite queen, who is perhaps the sister of the queen that was killed in season 1? hmmm

'Star Trek: Picard' Season 3 Introduces Amanda Plummer as the Ultimate Villain

Plummer is set to play the new big bad for the show's final season, alongside returning adversaries Lore and Moriarty.

In the new trailer for Star Trek: Picard Season 3 we got our first official look at the show's new villain. Earlier this year, executive producer Alex Kurtzman teased that she would be "amazing," and now from the new footage shared at New York Comic Con, we can safely say that this new character is certainly a worthy adversary for the returning Next Generation crew.

Introduced in the trailer as well as a new image is Vadic, played by Tony Award winner Amanda Plummer whom audiences may recognize from her roles in Pulp Fiction , The Hunger Games: Catching Fire , and more. The trailer introduces Vadic as an alien captain and a formidable opponent hellbent on the complete and utter destruction of Starfleet, and quite possibly humanity. We get a good look at her ship, the Shrike, in the new footage, and it's definitely reminiscent of Nero's ( Eric Bana ) ship in the 2009 Kelvin-verse Star Trek movie. However, Vadic is certainly not Romulan.

In the trailer, Vadic promises to scorch the earth beneath Picard's feet in her quest for vengeance — against whom it is unclear, but it's likely that she's at the heart of the conflict that leads to Beverly Crusher's distress signal. Former ship's counselor, Deanna Troi senses an "all-consuming darkness" in their new enemy with her empathic abilities, as the trailer showcases an all-out showdown against the bloodthirsty Vadic.

Also introduced in the new trailer, alongside the returning crew members and their newest enemy, are returning Next Generation adversaries Lore and Moriarty. Brent Spiner has played a number of characters throughout the history of Star Trek , reprising the beloved android Data in Season 1 of Picard , and Soong-dynasty ancestor Adam Soong in Season 2. Fans have been wondering who Spiner will play this season as Data was given a permanent death in Season 1, and the trailer reveals his long-awaited return as Lore. Moriarty is even more of a surprise to viewers as a completely unexpected return from Daniel Davis . Davis originally played the classic Sherlock Holmes character Moriarty in a holodeck program frequented by Data and Geordi. On Next Generation , the hologram eventually gained sentience and was allowed to leave the Enterprise.

In addition to Plummer, Spiner, and Davis, Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard will feature Patrick Stewart, Gates McFadden, Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, Jeri Ryan, Michelle Hurd, and newcomers Mica Burton and Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut. The third and final season arrives on Paramount+ on February 16, 2023. In the meantime, you can watch the new trailer down below.

The final season of Paramount+’s  Star Trek: Picard is a family affair, as just revealed at New York Comic Con . Not only will the third season reunite most of the original cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation for one last adventure, but also Amanda Plummer, daughter of the late Christopher Plummer — who was the villain in  Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country — will go head to head with Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) as new villain Vadic.

Though not much is revealed about Vadic’s beef with Picard, we do discover in the teaser trailer that the cackling villain has something to do with the missing Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden). We also know thanks to a release provided to Decider that she’s an alien, and the captain of the Shrike, “a warship that has set its sights on Jean-Luc Picard and his old crewmates from his days on the Enterprise.”

…and that wasn’t the only reveal at the packed panel. In addition to Plummer, joining the cast are LeVar Burton’s real life daughter Mica Burton as his character Geordi La Forge’s daughter, Alandra La Forge. And Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut, who is not LeVar Burton’s real life daughter, will play Geordi’s other daughter, Sidney La Forge. Sidney is the helmsman of the  U.S.S. Titan , while Alandra works side by side with Geordi.

But wait, there’s more! As seen in the trailer, two classic Star Trek villains are returning. The first is Daniel Davis as Professor Moriarty — yes, the one from Sherlock Holmes stories — who seems to have once again escaped from the holodeck to terrorize the crew. And not only that, but Brent Spiner is playing his fourth character in three seasons of Picard with the return of his villainous android, Lore.

Along with Stewart, Spiner, McFadden and Burton, Star Trek: Picard Season 3 also stars Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd, all reprising their roles from either  Next Generation or early seasons of  Picard or other shows. I dunknow, there’s a lot of  Star Trek .

Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, Terry Matalas, Patrick Stewart, Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Doug Aarniokoski and Dylan Massin serve as executive producers of Season 3. Terry Matalas also serves as showrunner.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 will premiere February 16, 2023, with each episode of the 10-episode long season available to stream weekly.

‘Star Trek: Picard’ Teaser Shows Amanda Plummer as Final Season Villain (VIDEO)

The cast for Star Trek: Picard ’s third and final season gets better and better. At the show’s New York Comic Con panel today, Saturday, October 8, fans learned that Emmy-winning actress Amanda Plummer will be a big bad in the action to come.

The actress, daughter of the late Christoper Plummer , has three Emmys and a Tony Award to her name, and she has made her mark on the big screen, too, in films including The Fisher King , Pulp Fiction , and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire .

In Picard , she’ll play Vadic, “the mysterious alien captain of the Shrike, a warship that has set its sights on Jean-Luc Picard [ Patrick Stewart ] and his old crewmates from his days on the Enterprise,” as Paramount+ explains.

The trailer for Season 3, shown at Sunday’s NYCC event, shows Vedic seeking vengeance against Picard and vowing that “the night will brighten with the ashes of the Federation.”

And it shows Picard’s old colleagues from Star Trek: The Next Generation in Vadic’s crosshairs as well. Picard receives a distress call from Beverly Crusher ( Gates McFadden ), who says she’s being hunted. Geordi La Forge ( LeVar Burton ), meanwhile, is surprised that Picard roped in William Riker ( Jonathan Frakes ) and Wolf ( Michael Dorn ). And Deanna Troi ( Marina Sirtis ) detects an “all-consuming darkness” on a ship the crew explores.

The clip also features the return of The Next Generation alum Brent Spiner , reprising the role of Data’s brother-android Lore, and TNG guest-star Daniel Davis , back as the villain Professor Moriarty.

'Star Trek: Picard' Reveals Season 3 Character Portraits

Paramount+ announced the additions of Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut ( Cruel Summer ) and Mica Burton ( Critical Role ) as recurring stars on Picard . Chestnut will play Geordi La Forge, Geordi’s eldest daughter and helmsman of the U.S.S. Titan, while Burton will play Alandra La Forge, Geordi La Forge’s youngest daughter and one of his colleagues.

Who Is Vadic in ‘Star Trek Picard’? Everything We Know About the Villainous Big Bad

She was touted as the season’s big bad, but is there a greater evil at work?

“Star Trek” has had some memorable villains in the past: Khan, Q and The Borg Queen to name just a few.

When the villainous Vadic was introduced as the big bad in “Star Trek: Picard” Season 3, viewers knew there had to be more to her than possessing a super powerful warship.

As the season progressed, her true, tragic origin was revealed. Here’s everything we know about the villainous Vadic.

Who Plays Captain Vadic?

Vadic is played by Amanda Plummer on “Star Trek: Picard.” She is an original character introduced in Season 3. She appeared in promos ahead of the season premiere, and debuted in the second episode titled “Disengage.”

You may recognize her from her role as robber Honey Bunny from “Pulp Fiction.”

Plummer is the daughter of Christopher Plummer. The elder Plummer also played a legendary “Trek” villain: General Chang of the Klingon Empire in “Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.”

Is Captain Vadic Human?

On the outside, Vadic appears human. She has two scars running down her face, earning her the name, “The Marked Woman.”

In reality, Vadic is a Changeling, an alien species of shapeshifters first introduced in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.” Her true form is a gelantinous state. Her species’ homeworld is the Founders Homeworld in the distant Gamma quadrant.

Is Vadic an Ordinary Changeling?

Like others in her species, Vadic can change her form and shape. She impersonates a Starfleet lieutenant while arresting Will Riker at Daystrom Station. She kills the other arresting officers before revealing her female humanoid form.

A foe capable of besting the legendary crew of the infamous U.S.S. Enterprise certainly has a few tricks up her sleeve. Literally.

Vadic’s hand is actually another Changeling whom she receives instructions from. She cuts off her hand so this other unnamed Changeling can take form. Yes, it’s as gross as it sounds.

Why Does She Hate Starfleet?

In order to win the Dominion War, Starfleet devised a virus — a biological weapon — to weaken the Changelings.

In Episode 7, Vadic reveals Starfleet gave her the ability to mimic human blood and hold her solid form longer than other Changelings. Her “evolved physiology” comes from cruel experiments conducted upon her and her “loved ones” as a prisoner of war.

She and nine other Changelings were subject to all sorts of tests as part of Project Proteus at Daystrom Station. In Greek mythology, Proteus was a sea god who could take many different forms.

Vadic and the other Changelings were burned, injected with chemicals, electrocuted, spliced and experimented on. The goal was to create “perfect, undetectable spies who could drop into any species and create chaos.”

Vadic eventually was freed and took the face of the female scientist that tortured her.

She has the ability to pass on her evolved physiology to any Changeling who wishes, at the cost of shorter life span and constant pain.

What Does She Want With Picard and Jack Crusher?

Vadic seeks revenge against the Federation for “taking her family.”

The Changeling’s plan for Frontier Day — an event where the entire fleet gathers in one place — remains unclear.

Picard and Beverly Crusher surmise they want Picard’s human body and Jack Crusher’s blood to create a perfect replica of Picard to infiltrate the Frontier Day festivities.

But Vadic suggests Jack is something more, telling Beverly, “He’s not for me. We could bond over that, since he was never really for you either.”

What Ship Does Vadic Command?

Vadic commands the Shrike, a powerful warship of unknown origin.

It’s far more powerful than the Titan and has a massive weapons payload, including an experimental portal device stolen from Daystrom Station.

The Shrike used the portal weapon to disable the Titan by “teleporting” its own photon torpedos back at it, although it easily could’ve used other weapons as well.

What Are Unanswered Questions About Vadic?

It’s unclear how and where Vadic obtained the Shrike.

Who is the mysterious “hand” she take instructions from?

And why is Jack Crusher so important to her?

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Is Evidence That Amanda Plummer Was Born To Play A Sci-Fi Villain

On the new season of "Star Trek: Picard," actress Amanda Plummer plays a mysterious character named Vadic, the captain of a massive, overpowered weapons craft called the Shrike. Vadic is something of a mystery. She's very clear that she wishes to apprehend Jack Crusher (Ed Speelers) to collect the bounty on his head, but she seems willing to commit horrendous acts of villainy in order to do it. Either Jack's bounty is massive, or something else even more mysterious is afoot. 

Vadic is more than a mysterious and determined bounty hunter, though. She is an outright villain. The bridge of the Shrike is a dim, misty space, and she sits in her captain's chair like it's a throne of skulls. She wears red gloves, slicks her hair forward, and sports scars on her cheeks. There is something not-so-vaguely fascistic about her wardrobe. She has a crew, but it's difficult to tell if they are skull-faced robots, or bird-like aliens in masks. When Vadic speaks, she purrs with self-satisfied wickedness, knowing she has the upper hand in any scenario. Most threatening of all, she pronounces Jean-Luc Picard's name with a stressed French accent. "Picarrrrr," she growls. 

Oh yes, and the Shrike: Built to look like a talon, the Shrike is equipped with ultra-powerful weapons the likes of which Starfleet hadn't ever encountered. It is equipped with tractor beam technology that can grab a whole starship and hurl it at another. Later in the series ... well, other, more powerful weapons will also be revealed. Eventually, too, audiences will see that Vadic has a connection to a larger, perhaps recognizable "Star Trek" antagonist. 

While Vadic follows a tradition of threatening Trek villains, Plummer is making her into something notable and memorable. Like her father, Plummer is a great Trek villain.

The villain tradition

One might recall that Christopher Plummer , Amanda's father, played the eye-patched Klingon General Chang in Nicholas Meyer's feature film "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country." At the end of that film, Chang could be seen gleefully spinning in his captain's chair, enthusiastically yelling Shakespeare quotes as he pummels the U.S.S. Enterprise with photon torpedoes. It seems that playing cackling sci-fi villains is an intergenerational talent, as Amanda Plummer is meeting the task with aplomb.

"Star Trek," of course, more typically eschews the moral simplicity of "heroes" and "villains." In a superhero universe, one can approve of violence committed by heroes and condemn violence committed by villains because, well, the heroes are going to be peerlessly righteous by definition. On "Star Trek," the antagonists are rarely outwardly evil, often driven by philosophies and principles that merely stand counter to the show's protagonists. Even popular "villains" like Q (John de Lancie) or the Borg are functioning perfectly ethically by their own personal guidelines. It's just that neither of them has had any reason to place much value on human life. 

The "Star Trek" feature films are more typically concerned with a simpler, unambiguous hero/villain dynamic, at least since "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." While many love "Khan," a consensus seems to have been reached at some point that it was the best Trek movie of them all (a claim that few might dispute). As such, future Trek movies began to emulate it; one might have noticed that multiple films in a row featured crazed, revenge-bent villains who have a bone to pick with Starfleet. All the films from "Star Trek: Nemesis" through "Star Trek Beyond" had "villains."

Plummer's range

Since the new season of "Star Trek: Picard" is quite clearly trying to emulate the look and feel and plotting of a feature film (it even borrows musical cues from previous Trek movies), it stands to reason that the showrunners would also want to employ a now-traditional villain character.

Amanda Plummer is weirdly perfect as a "Star Trek" villain. Plummer began her acting career in the 1980s, and she immediately accrued acclaim for her twitchy intensity. In 1982, she won a Tony award for a production of "Agnes of God," and can be noted for any number of high-profile film roles. She was the shy woman beloved by Robin Williams in "The Fisher King," she held up a restaurant in "Pulp Fiction." She was excellent in an early episode of " Tales from the Crypt ." She won two Emmys for her guest spots on "The Outer Limits" in 1996 and on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" in 2005. Plummer's career is perhaps too extensive to delve into here. Needless to say, the reader has likely seen her in several films or TV shows without trying. 

"Star Trek" is a world of order, rules, a chain of command. Jean-Luc Picard is a formal character played by a classically trained actor, Patrick Stewart. Amanda Plummer, meanwhile, has amazing talents playing unhinged, angry, or twitchy characters. Compared to the typical propriety of "Star Trek," she is unpredictable, dark, scary. She's perfect in how out-of-place she is. And yet, she is completely convincing, representing a dark, criminal corner of "Star Trek" that is not usually explored. 

More than anything, Plummer is emotionally and dramatically immediate. Like Iago, her motivations are less important than her impact. What a cool character.

New teaser for the highly-anticipated final voyage also unveiled!

Paramount+ today debuted a new teaser for the third and final season of its hit original series Star Trek: Picard at today’s Star Trek universe panel at New York Comic Con. The final season premieres on Thursday, February 16, 2023, exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S., with new episodes of the 10-episode-long season available to stream weekly on Thursdays.

It was also revealed that Tony Award winner Amanda Plummer ( The Fisher King , Pulp Fiction ) joined the cast in a recurring role as Vadic , the mysterious alien captain of the Shrike , a warship that has set its sights on Jean-Luc Picard and his old crewmates from his days on the Enterprise .

Mica Burton ( Critical Role , Vampire: The Masquerade: L.A. by Night ) and Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut ( Cruel Summer ) also joined in recurring roles. Ensign Sidney La Forge is played by Sharpe Chestnut and is the eldest daughter of Geordi La Forge and helmsman of the U.S.S. Titan . Ensign Alandra La Forge is played by Mica Burton, Geordi La Forge's youngest daughter who works alongside her father.

In addition, fans learned during today’s New York Comic Con panel that Brent Spiner reprises his character Lore in this final season, and they will also see the return of Daniel Davis as Professor Moriarty from Star Trek: The Next Generation .

The Star Trek Universe New York Comic Con 2022 event wrapped up with Picard and a Star Trek: The Next Generation reunion . And a brand new trailer has all sorts of reveals, including the first look at the villain and Brent Spiner’s character. There are also new details on Geordi’s kids, one of which is played by LeVar Burton’s daughter Mika.

The Picard panel featured series star Patrick Stewart and cast members LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis and Brent Spiner, as well as executive producers Alex Kurztman, Terry Matalas and Rod Roddenberry. The trailer reveals Brent Spiner’s character this season is named Lore, has a quick appearance of the Enterprise-F, and ends with a look at Daniel Davis returning to the role of Professor Moriarty from Star Trek: The Next Generation . It was also revealed that Tony Award winner Amanda Plummer ( The Fisher King , Pulp Fiction ) joined the cast in a recurring role as the villain Vadic. Amanda Plummer is the daughter of the late Christopher Plummer, who played Klingon General Chang, the villain of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country . Here is the official character description of Amanda Plummer’s role in Picard :

Vadic, the mysterious alien captain of the Shrike, a warship that has set its sights on Jean-Luc Picard and his old crewmates from his days on the Enterprise.

The panel also produced more details on two new characters, the children of LeVar Burton’s Geordi LaForge. Mica Burton ( Critical Role , Vampire: The Masquerade: L.A. by Night ) and Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut ( Cruel Summer ) join Picard in recurring roles. Ensign Sidney La Forge is played by Sharpe Chestnut and is the eldest daughter of Geordi La Forge and helmsman of the U.S.S. Titan . Season 3 details

While we saw a lot in the trailer and got some details on some of the new cast, we still don’t have much on the plot for season three. Here is the latest official synopsis:

Picard features Patrick Stewart reprising his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard, which he played for seven seasons on Star Trek: The Next Generation , and follows this iconic character into the next chapter of his life. The final season premieres on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023, exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S., with new episodes of the 10-episode-long season available to stream weekly on Thursdays.  Picard streams exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and is distributed concurrently by Paramount Global Content Distribution on Amazon Prime Video in more than 200 countries and territories, and in Canada it airs on Bell Media’s CTV Sci-Fi Channel and streams on Crave.

The biggest surprise for me was the reveal of Moriarty.

I think it’s safe to assume that’s gonna be the biggest surprise for everyone.

Seems a pretty obscure plot point to me for a series that will air in 2023. I really liked the Moriarty follow-up at the time, which was that genuine rarity of a sequel being superior to its progenitor in just about every way. But will most non-diehards remember it at all?

Hi highly doubt it. But in a way I think it’s a cool twist because as of late there seems to be a Sherlock Holmes resurrection between Robert Downey Jr and Benedict cumberbach and Henry cavil and the likes and maybe having one of those characters here will draw newcomers in

Yeh Cumberbatch hadn’t played Sherlock since 2017 (thought it was longer than that) and RDJ back in 2011. and I doubt most ppl even know Superman is playing Sherlock in a supporting role in those spoof netflix films with the Stranger Things girl

Just about everyone that watched TNG will remember him, so much so that he has appeared in other shows that give a nod to TNG. Plus this is another Star Trek show, so some level of prior knowledge will be expected. Also, being 2023 makes no difference as it’s not like the last time anyone seen TNG was the 1990’s.

Genuine question, where did he appear as a nod to Sherlock Holmes outside of Trek ?

I believe it was on “The Nanny”.

I’m not a “die hard” TNG guy. Only seen most episodes twice. Once when they aired and on my rewatch about 5-6 years ago. Most episodes I just didn’t remember because they were so bland and vanilla but I tended to remember the really good ones and the really bad ones. Those holodeck episodes all fell in the ‘really bad’ pile. So I recalled it but only because the episode was just so awful.

Looks great. I loved S1 and S2 so i hope S3 is just as good. I have seen Amanda Plummer in an episode of the Blacklist and she was quite good so can’t wait to see her in Picard. Great seeing Lore again but how and of course Moriarty should be interesting.

A lot of the Khan wannabe villains in Trek have fallen flat but Plummer is often a fascinating actress. Still cautiously optimistic.

I won’t be shocked if she’s carrying some big bioweapon to try and destroy the Federation with in a big ship and we hear a ‘FIRE EVERYTHING’ line to keep with the revenge villain trope this franchise just keep pushing on us.

The Picard Season 1 countdown comics said that Picard told Starfleet to make Worf Captain of the Enterprise when he was promoted to admiral even tho they had reservations of Worf saving Dax and leaving a Cardassian informant to die during the war in DS9

I’m not sold it IS Lore…. Geordi sees that person, his brain jumps to a conclusion and he asks, “Lore?” A question. Spiner’s next line could just as easily be, “No.”

I think that would be weird to include his name just to be a red herring. And we knew Spiner was playing an old character. And in the original teaser trailer when they announced the TNG cast was coming back, he sounded exactly like Lore.

She very obviously has history with Picard but it doesn’t seem to be any history we are aware of in canon. I’m hoping beyond hope this won’t have anything to do with the Picard family like Season 2 and to an extent Nemesis did.

Yeah I’m super excited to FINALLY get the next Enterprise! It’s no way they could hit the final season and leave it out. I’m more positive on the trailer overall, but I knew the villain part was going to disappoint me. But I can’t wait to see how Moriarty and Lore fits in to all of it though.

Moriarty is really getting me curious. Lore less so. Lore hasn’t been interesting since they jumped the shark with him in descent.

Also I’m still trying to figure out who those aliens with the clicking noises are. They remind me of those alternate dimension aliens from the TNG ep Schisms.

Yeah there are a LOT of villains in this one lol. Assuming Moriarty is one (but it’s Moriarty, he’s one of the oldest and iconic villains in literature). Lore seems like he will be helping Picard and company (and in a Starfleet uniform???) but who knows? Maybe he’s there to take over the ship.

Yep. Way overused cliche, but I’ve come to accept lowered expectations and creativity. Cinema, television and music are all in decline which is consistent with the fact that people in America are also. Why expect the arts to be any different?

At least they aren’t bringing the Enterprise E back to blow it up. Or crash it on some planet. My expectations are nil after season 2. I don’t think they could handle a 2 hour action script, much less write a 10 episode one. Its bound to be disjointed and full of filler. Like the first two seasons. If they haven’t course corrected as much as RMB is saying, and frankly i don’t believe it.

I was hoping for Moriarty! I figured it would be Lore, it’s good to see both. Not sure about Vadic how she will fit in. Also happy to see NCC-1701-F, curious to see who is captain. I am excited for this season!

Wow. Looks like Season 3 will be intense. I really hope we get a better season.

Funny thinking about when Picard was first introduced as a show and they described it as an adult character piece show which it NEVER felt like to me but they kept saying. But now, it’s basically back to big bombastic action Trek like the movies again. And I’m not complaining, it’s just funny how we ended up back here pretty quickly.

When it was first conceived IIRC Stewart very much wanted Picard to be Treks Version of Logan. But after 2 seasons I think P+ realized it just wasn’t working and they weren’t going to net the TNG crew go out with a whimper again if they could help it. ESP with Kelvin pretty much done at this point.

I think it was OK to go the Logan route in the first season but I don’t think fans would’ve wanted that Picard throughout the entire show either. They still want Captain Picard, the guy who commands every room he enters, very decisive and of course gives those wonderful speeches Q comes to listen to. That’s the Picard they want.

And we knew it was going to be a bigger movie vibe because Matalas describes the season as the movie we wanted to see them go out as. So it was always going to be big and explosions everywhere but I hope it’s not too much like the Kelvin movies and it’s Worf and Riker jumping off stuff every episode. But we got the villain wanting vengeance trope once again so its feeling like the Kelvin movies in that way. And why I’m not loosing a lot of sleep if they are really done with those movies now.

Yes exactly. Starting out with a Logan like vibe is cool and all but lets be honest, they knew full well what the audience was tuning in for and it wasn’t that. We did in fact want TNG season 8, not Logan.

Agreed. I was happy season 2 we got to see more of the old Picard but now that he’s back on a starship again and with his old crew then I hope we see the Picard we grew up with, even while acknowledging he is still older now.

from season 1s Logan to the full on ‘legacy sequel’ of season 3 (or maybe TNG s8) TNGs Force Awakens (which had to be influenced by the success of ST09) or more recently Top Gun Maverick (which obviously took its title from Star Trek Picard)..

I guess maybe s2 was an attempt at Avengers Endgame? 🤔 (itself influenced by All Good Things)

But the problem there is that Stewart has completely lost his charisma. He absolutely does not command any room he enters any longer. Relying on that would be asking a great deal from the audience as well as Stewart himself. He just can’t pull it off any more. Not denigrating the guy. But he is over 80. Most folks loose a few steps.

Yeah he’ll never be the same Picard we got in TNG no more than Shatner will be the same Kirk we got in TOS. But at least aim for that direction. What bothered a lot of people in the first season is he kind of just let everyone step all over him. He never tried to take leadership like in the show and movies. But I also think because Picard was no longer a Starfleet commander by that period and the point was to see a man who left that role behind long ago and had to get it back again. He had a more leisurely life for over a decade.

Hopefully we’ll see him more in command and the confident character we got now that he’s back in Starfleet and running things again.

Shatner hasn’t played Kirk for 30 years. And there are no plans to bring him back. That said Shatner doesn’t seem to have lost near as much as Stewart has.

That might be the idea but the problem I described still remains. Stewart just doesn’t have it any longer. The script may call of it but Stewart is no longer capable of pulling it off.

Then just don’t watch man. Problem solved.

That’s a different matter. I was only mentioning that Stewart has lost a lot of steps in his older age. Many people do. It’s not a knock. Just a reality. He doesn’t have the same presence he had in his TNG days or even in the feature film days. It’s gone.

You say you have ‘hope’ but then want to challenge everyone who like this and the other shows. I mean there was a direct example of that when it was mentioned Robert Meyer Burnett said he happened to like the third season of the show and you want to question him on it because he simply said he liked it? Really?

If you are so bitter to the point you want to try and discredit others for even speaking positive on it after they seen it then that doesn’t sound like ‘hope’ to me, right? It just sounds like someone who is waiting to hate it no matter what. How else would you interpret it?

What I, and I think most others, would not want you to say is the tired cliche of “don’t watch”. That’s just not very realistic for heavy fans. If you don’t have anything to say besides that it would be better to not say anything at all. There is always hope. Prodigy showed this group is indeed capable of producing something that doesn’t suck. But the RMB example just doesn’t seem like a trustworthy source. How has this guy been able to see the show so very early? It couldn’t possibly be ready to stream yet. What he saw had to be very early cuts at best that are far from the finished product. What is his connection to P+ or Secret Hideout that he has such access? If he has a connection then it would be fair to think his opinion would be compromised in some way. Sorry but logic suggests his opinion at this early stage should be doubted.

If the show were complete and shown to a random test audience their response would be a better gauge. You seem to trust the guy. I don’t know him from Adam so forgive me if I have doubts about his take. And you can’t deny I have good reason to doubt him.

Honestly disappointed by this.

Looks like a lot of pew-pew fighting, explosions, concerned close-ups, an over-acting megalomaniac villain played in an extreme melodramatic way, and inappropriately timed wise-cracks. So, same as the previous two seasons.

I mean To be fair this is really just a TV show in name only. They’ve been saying from almost the beginning they planed on treating season like a movie. And Trek movies have been about vengeance and ship battles since wrath of khan.

Well, a trailer is necessarily going to feature all the action bits rather than static clips of people sitting about talking. So I think your comment is a little unreasonable in that respect. But I share your disappointment with yet another big super-villain hell bent on revenge for something; that formula has been done to death on Trek, and particularly since TNG hit the movie screens in the mid 90’s and most of those villains ended up being altogether forgettable.

I hate it. Another Space Revenge plot and supervillain. Looks like Nemesis meets Into Darkness without of any of Into Darkness social commentary. Looks atrocious and nothing like the TNG show. And we still have dark and drab colors and poor lighting. No hopeful optimistic future here.

Frankly, this trailer took my anticipation down a notch. Seems like more of the same undermotivated revenge-crazed villain nonsense. I am looking forward to seeing Amanda Plummer in this. She’s such an interesting actor. I will say, though, that I do like the look of what they’ve shown so far. Very cinematic. It looks a lot more expensive than SNW (although, to be fair, I like SNW’s look, too. Kind of harkens back to TOS in a lot of ways).

I wonder if part of the problem is that they’re hiring too many Treksperts to produce these shows. People like Matalas and McMahon may be able to win pub quizzes with their knowledge of the combination of Kirk’s safe, but can they actually write a good *story*?

Robert Wise was a newcomer to Star Trek back when he made TMP, and Nick Meyer even more so when he made Wrath of Khan. The latter jettisoned some of the iconic imagery of TOS in favor of design elements like the monster maroon uniforms and Kirk’s glasses. He showed real structural damage and casualties during space battles.

The only similar move that NuTrek has made was bringing on Michael Chabon for season one of Picard. Oddly enough, that’s the only NuTrek I’ve really enjoyed. (I grant that some folks disagree with that assessment, but at least he *tried* something new.)

These arguments/opinions don’t make much sense to me. McMahon has made what I think most fans of Trek would say is the best or second best of the NuTrek shows (and I agree with them). I think over almost 3 seasons, he has shown that he can craft good stories. And the episodes he writes personally are generally considered among the very best of LDS. The sense of humor may not be up to everyone’s liking, but most of the stories are solid both Trek-wise and just plain story-wise.

I don’t know how much of a Trek trivia expert Matalas is, but I do know he is a big fan. But so far, we don’t really know how good of a Trek story he can craft as he was only around for part of season 2 of Picard’s production, afterwhich he directed his attention to season 3. I personally am not a huge fan of his, but based on 12 Monkeys and not the limited bit I have seen of his Trek. I tried watching 12 Monkeys after hearing how well plotted it was, but bailed after a couple of seasons of what I felt was kind of meandering plot for plot’s sake.

As for getting non-Trek people in – fresh blood as it were. Yeah, Meyer worked out great for Star Trek, but a strong counter example was Stuart Baird. Famously brought in for Nemesis, he turned out what I think most fans agree is the worst Next Gen movie and maybe one of the bottom 3 Trek movies overall. (For me those would be ST:V, ST:Nemesis, and STID.)

I think what they need is Trek fans who understand what Trek is and is supposed to be about, and then the time and space to develop the show/season. Chabon and the showrunners of PIC season 1 notably started filming season 1 without knowing where it was going or how it was going to end (bad mojo for a serialized story). The showrunners for season 2 supposedly learned that lesson and had plenty of time to correct for it, but as I interpret what they have said covid delays and lockdowns caused them to change course. They couldn’t do what they had planned and instead did what they could manage. Yeah, you can blame Matalas for some of that being the supposed showrunner for at least part, but I don’t think it was an overly Trek-focused approach that doomed that season/production.

I am hoping having one consistent showrunner for a whole season, a set of actors who know what they are doing, and a set of characters who all have defined roles or purposes will finally give us a good overall season of PIC, but I must say that the tone of this trailer really undermines my hopes a little.

While yours is a fair point, it is also worth noting that Baird was the director, not the screenplay writer. The latter was John Logan, and I think the screenplay was pretty compelling; to the extent Nemesis had problems, it was in the execution, which tends to fall on the director. (I’m among those who think NEM is, though not perfect, highly underrated.)

Wow, and I think that Logan is to blame for most of the issues. Baird was a disaster, granted, but even with good or even inspired execution, NEM would still have been bad. (I can go for pages on Baird’s failings — a guy who has Jerry Goldsmith score all three of his features and still can’t deliver a watchable flick has got prob-lems — just weighing them against Logan.)

Matalas may be a big fan but in his case that fandom may get in the way of him plotting out a good story. McMahon is a big fan and he uses it by just throwing in as many fangasms as he possibly can. And I’m sure he knows that it comes at the expense of comedy and character. He respects the show so much that he just can’t bring him self to take good natured pokes at it. Lower Decks probably should have been written and conceived by someone who had no great love of Trek. Might have been more funny but there is also the problem with current day situation where comedy writers are afraid to write good comedy. And that bleeds over to even drama. Writers seem to be afraid to write quality characters. The Trek problem very well could be related to the overall writing and plotting problems that exist all over media today.

Great Trailer ! Nothing bad to say about it ,it washes away 2 seasons of Picard stink. Its what fans have wanted since the series was announced ,going out on a high note ! So now its Speculation time , So who is Valdi ? It seems She is really Pissed at Picard ,and giving off a this is all very personal vibe .,LIKE SHE WANTS PERSONAL REVENGE . Years ago, there was this constant criticism that trailers were revealing too much. I never fully and truly agreed until now. Did they really have to reveal Lore in this early trailer? I didn’t mind the reveal of Moriarty. He’s a hologram for goodness sake. What possible threat can he be? However, revealing Lore was simply too much, too soon in my opinion.

Yeah but that was an awfully flimsy and a plot that was simply impossible to buy. And this is a show that features ripping people apart and reassembling them somewhere else! A holodeck character, no matter how it was put together, should not have the ability to take over the ship. It just doesn’t made any sense whatsoever. The concept of those episodes were just not thought out well at all. And it’s not a surprise that the Secret Hideout people thought including that was a good idea.

Instead of the Lore/Moriarty reveal I would have preferred at least a hint of what this story might actually be about. So far we have almost nothing to go on, and what little we do know (villain out for revenge) is frankly disappointing.

This is some of the worst news about the season for me. I don’t know why, but I have always disliked Amanda Plummer. I have never liked any character I have seen her play and I find her voice to be very annoying. I hope my dislike of the actress will not detract from my enjoyment of the season. The rest of it looks intriguing.

Agreed. The last four movies did the same kind of thing over and over man. None of these people have any original ideas to make a compelling story. Nemesis and basically all the JJ verse movies sucked for me. I give Beyond a little slack because at least it pretended to explore at least a little. ,🙄

I’m hoping this season actually has more things than villain wants to wipe out the crew for 10 episodes. That would get boring fast.

Last 5. Insurrection was about people seeking revenge. At least Nemesis contained some thoughtful moments and the final act was as strong as any Trek film final act.

I think he means against the Federation itself. In Insurrection, the Son’a was working with them against the Baku.

I actually liked the set up in Insurrection. It was actually original because we never seen the Federation openly work against a benign species before. Even Section 31 mostly just go after the A-holes lol. But per usual it was the execution that ultimately failed it.

I’m afraid one of our friends we grew up with won’t make it out of this series alive…

Looks good. Looks a bit too Nemesisy to me but I can’t deny how great it is to see the cast back. TNG is my favorite show bar none and love this cast so much. It’s a dream to have them all back together. 😎

The irony is two out of the the three Kelvin movies required no time travel and the villains were from prior centuries anyway. It is funny that all the main villains from those movies are in fact from another century:

At this point I doubt we’ll ever see another Kelvin movie again or at least in the near future, but by some miracle one happens, the next villain should be from the 21st or 25th century. Just for the consistency of it. ;D

The Actor that plays Professor Moriarty on Star Trek is American. Daniel Davis was born in Arkansas. His British accent is so good, the actual British actor on the Nanny (tv show) was told several times to get hints from him to improve his accent. 😁

But to be fair, the movie doesn’t go out of its way to explain the command structure of that ship. It’s way in the background to what’s happening in the story.

I always thought tHfRO would make a good template for a offshoot Trek film. Romulans develop a new kind of cloak. Romulan commander fears it’s meant to start a war, steals the prototype. Starfleet Intelligence officer figures out what’s happening and ends up going on a wild adventure aboard the USS Dallas, with a short detour to the Enterprise. Imagine the Painter/Davenport conversation but it’s Picard and Riker.

HFRO was loosely based on an actual incident during the Cold War involving a Soviet frigate called Storozhevoy.

There’s no such thing as a ‘British’ accent. There’s over a dozen of them and they are VERY distinct from each other. No everyone is middle class and lives in London.

What there *is* however, is a kind of standard pronunciation of many languages — kind of the “Queen’s English” (OK, the king’s English now) used on the BBC. Or the Columbian/Costa Rican standard accent in Spanish rather than Mexico or Barthelona, or Russian from St. Petersburg rather than the Lower Volga, etc.

I just finished watching Robert Meyer Burnett’s video discussing and analyzing the trailer. And as some people know, he has watched the entire season and really loved it. According to him, what we see in the trailer is only a small portion of what the season is about and says the villain in it and the revenge plot is not really what it seems either. He’s basically saying it’s a misdirect. She’s definitely a villain but not in the way the trailer is portraying her.

So if that’s true, that’s kind of a relief. I DO like the trailer but I can tell a lot of people are kind of over the uber-villain for revenge motif. I accept all these shows and movies will always have a villain of some kind but at least come up with a different angle. And according to Burnett, she does have one. He seems to really like the character a lot. He also says how and why Moriarty is there is unique and interesting.

He keeps praising this season while reminding people how bad he thought season 1 and 2 was, so I’m still cautiously optimistic. And just seeing the cast back and doing their thing looks like it will be a lot of fun!

I was a little underwhelmed by the villain reveal here. My mind immediately went to, ‘Oh great, just what I always wanted – Star Trek vs. Edna Mode!’ However, I do like the Plummer connection.

It would be a relief, if we ignore most everything else RMB has said and done this century up to the TV restart of Trek a few years back. The guy seemed like a very intelligent and deftly funny critic of things TREK in the 90s, but since then he seems to have become ‘unsound’ – to quote how they describe Kurtz’s methods in APOCALYPSE NOW.

His involvement with the needing-to-be-indicted Peters on AXANAR was the final straw for me, so even if his op of KurtzmanTrek has been largely (but not entirely) a match with my own thus far, his rave over s3 doesn’t inspire confidence (and the idea that they might have showed him the whole season in advance just to get him on their side seems like an overtly-political maneuver, like something a studio would do for Harry Knowles back in the Aint-it-cool-news heyday, and so I find it particularly disconcerting and disheartening.)

I have to wonder about the intelligence of some of these people, then. Fans are sick of stock revenge villains. The writers seem to be, too, if what Burnett is saying is true. Why, then, would you showcase a stock revenge villain in your introductory trailer? Do these people not know how promotion and marketing work?

They knew people hated the Beastie Boys scene from Star Trek 2009 as well, but it was prominently in the Star Trek Beyond trailer. So i think they are that clueless.

Remember how many misleading UPN ads we got for Voyager? The promo for “Real Life” was all about the space tornados, “Think Tank” had the announcer ask the immortal question, “Does Jason Alexander want Seven of Nine for her mind… OR HER BODY?”

Which still goes back to the general question about intelligence. And teaser or not, this is the first official impression many of us will get from the show. If I hadn’t happen to see the above comment, I would walk away thinking it’s yet another villain-of-the-week seeking vengeance and the fate of the entire galaxy is at stake. And I’d probably go see what’s coming up on Disney+.

Same thing with newspaper headlines. I’ve had op-ed pieces published with radically different headlines than the one I’ve submitted, to the point where in one case the headline actually contradicted the point I made in the article itself.

But they’re hired by the same people, who should have some sense about this.

Good intell Tiger2. As one who actually liked Picard S1 (despite some glaring mis-steps), but not S2, I was wondering exactly what to expect next. It is good to hear you and others are encouraged RE S3. Ultimately, most want to see some form of TNG reunion, despite what Sir Patrick prefers, so it is not surprising that IMO, this latest trailer seems to have a TNG movie-like feel to it. February can’t get here fast enough haha!

Definitely agree. Even though people do seem a bit soured on another villain who wants to take down the Federation, people do seem to love seeing the cast back together. And the chemistry looks like it’s still there like it was 20 years ago. And it probably helps because they are all best friends in real life and part of each other lives. So that connection really looks and feels real.

The season could be really bad but I think if people love seeing these characters again most will enjoy it on that level alone unless they do something to a character fans don’t like. But we’ll see.

I’ve heard you discuss this before but I just can’t help but think this is not genuine. There has to be a reason why he would suddenly like this and not the first 2 seasons. The fact that he was allowed to view the entire season so early just sets off the “red alert” as it’s not something that can be trusted.

I mean I didn’t love the first two seasons of TNG, DS9 or ENT (but didn’t hate any of them) but fell in love with their third seasons. Star Trek is infamous with the third season being the ‘improved’ one.

And end of the day you can still hate it even if he really loved it right? No one is saying because he liked it it means everyone will. It just gives us hope if one guy who hated the first two like this one, maybe more will feel the same way. But none of it is a guarantee regardless.

I been following Burnett and his scorched earth policy to all things modern Trek for a decade now. It’s no reason for him to make this up. And if he really didn’t like it, he would’ve respected Matalas and just not say a thing until it aired. Rob’s a good guy, he’s just very passionate about his geek hobbies like we all are.

OK. You trust it. To me the entire situation just doesn’t pass the smell test. The only thing that gives me hope is that the trailers and pre-season propaganda for this season are very similar to that of S2 in that everything pointed to the season story being complete garbage but the actual season itself was not quite as bad as presented ahead of time. So maybe it’s possible this season will not be as bad as is being presented as well.

Yeah it could be completely awful. I’m only saying its possible it is really good too. I mean it is possible. Star Trek usually gets better as it goes so we’ll see. If it sucks you know I won’t have any issue saying so. But yeah, fingers crossed.

It is possible but it is also possible I will get hit by a bus tomorrow. It’s just unlikely. *sigh* The more I see from Secret Hideout the less impressed I am with their ability to deliver quality. Only Prodigy not sucking has given me hope that it is possible, however unlikely, that SH might get lucky and make something that isn’t sub par.

I may be more hyped about the return of Prodigy , but the Enterprise -F and a new starbase that reminds me of Terra Venture from Power Rangers Lost Galaxy are what I love best about the Picard final season trailer.

The spirit of Data is an essential part of the magic that creates this special tng-vibe. Like Spock’s spirit is essential to the tos-feeling. If that’s not back, tng will not be back. Like tos wouldn’t work without Spock.

Perhaps. But I could see 7 of 9 fitting into the TNG crew in lieu of Data.

That’s all I’ve really been waiting for. This is the villain I wanted. I’ve always thought that Lore simply being disassembled ran contrary to the rights that Data earned. Lore should have had a trial or something. I’m THRILLED to be getting the TNG cast together again, but having Lore back is the icing on the cake. Can’t wait!

I was always a big fan of the Professor Moriarty storyline… so much so that PM has been my handle on the Trek BBS site for over 20 years ;) So you can imagine my utter astonishment to see the criminally underrated Daniel Davis reprising his role from *28 years ago* !!

Do not disappoint us, Star Trek Picard producers. STICK. THIS. LANDING.

What would be nice is if they could make him a three-dimensional character, rather than a mustache twirler. They pulled this off very nicely in “Ship in a Bottle.”

Compare this textured writing to that of Nero “kill everything” in NuTrek.

Some of it looks exciting but I’m sort of annoyed by that mustache-twirling, revenge-seeking caricature of a Trek supervillain… I try to get the best out of it. Maybe it’s the last time we get such a villain and the next entry will commence with the exploration, awe and wonder :-)

If I am not mistaken she was the young woman with Tim Roth trying to rob the diner and she gets on the table and says “I’ll execute every one of you MF’ers.” Wow. Would never have recognized her. Of course Pulp Fiction came out almost 30 years ago. I can still recognize Tim Roth but not her.

That’s an interesting theory, but just because Moriarty was smart enough to beat Data does not necessarily mean he is crafty enough to beat Lore. Or doesn’t it?

Who Is Vadic in ‘Star Trek Picard’? Everything We Know About the Villainous Big Bad

“Star Trek” has had some memorable villains in the past: Khan, Q and The Borg Queen to name just a few.

When the villainous Vadic was introduced as the big bad in “Star Trek: Picard ” Season 3, viewers knew there had to be more to her than possessing a super powerful warship.

As the season progressed, her true, tragic origin was revealed. Here’s everything we know about the villainous Vadic.

Warning, this post contains spoilers through Episode 7 of “Star Trek: Picard.”

Who Plays Captain Vadic?

Vadic is played by Amanda Plummer on “Star Trek: Picard.” She is an original character introduced in Season 3. She appeared in promos ahead of the season premiere, and debuted in the second episode titled “Disengage.”

You may recognize her from her role as robber Honey Bunny from “Pulp Fiction.”

Plummer is the daughter of Christopher Plummer. The elder Plummer also played a legendary “Trek” villain: General Chang of the Klingon Empire in “Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.”

Is Captain Vadic Human?

On the outside, Vadic appears human. She has two scars running down her face, earning her the name, “The Marked Woman.”

In reality, Vadic is a Changeling, an alien species of shapeshifters first introduced in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.” Her true form is a gelantinous state. Her species’ homeworld is the Founders Homeworld in the distant Gamma quadrant.

Is Vadic an Ordinary Changeling?

Like others in her species, Vadic can change her form and shape. She impersonates a Starfleet lieutenant while arresting Will Riker at Daystrom Station. She kills the other arresting officers before revealing her female humanoid form.

A foe capable of besting the legendary crew of the infamous U.S.S. Enterprise certainly has a few tricks up her sleeve. Literally.

Vadic’s hand is actually another Changeling whom she receives instructions from. She cuts off her hand so this other unnamed Changeling can take form. Yes, it’s as gross as it sounds.

Why Does She Hate Starfleet?

In order to win the Dominion War, Starfleet devised a virus — a biological weapon — to weaken the Changelings.

In Episode 7, Vadic reveals Starfleet gave her the ability to mimic human blood and hold her solid form longer than other Changelings. Her “evolved physiology” comes from cruel experiments conducted upon her and her “loved ones” as a prisoner of war.

She and nine other Changelings were subject to all sorts of tests as part of Project Proteus at Daystrom Station. In Greek mythology, Proteus was a sea god who could take many different forms.

Vadic and the other Changelings were burned, injected with chemicals, electrocuted, spliced and experimented on. The goal was to create “perfect, undetectable spies who could drop into any species and create chaos.”

Vadic eventually was freed and took the face of the female scientist that tortured her.

She has the ability to pass on her evolved physiology to any Changeling who wishes, at the cost of shorter life span and constant pain.

What Does She Want With Picard and Jack Crusher?

Vadic seeks revenge against the Federation for “taking her family.”

The Changeling’s plan for Frontier Day — an event where the entire fleet gathers in one place — remains unclear.

Picard and Beverly Crusher surmise they want Picard’s human body and Jack Crusher’s blood to create a perfect replica of Picard to infiltrate the Frontier Day festivities.

But Vadic suggests Jack is something more, telling Beverly, “He’s not for me. We could bond over that, since he was never really for you either.”

What Ship Does Vadic Command?

Vadic commands the Shrike, a powerful warship of unknown origin.

It’s far more powerful than the Titan and has a massive weapons payload, including an experimental portal device stolen from Daystrom Station.

The Shrike used the portal weapon to disable the Titan by “teleporting” its own photon torpedos back at it, although it easily could’ve used other weapons as well.

Picard season 3 is the final adventure The Next Generation cast never got

"That was the goal from the beginning, to send 'em off in one final adventure that was both thrilling and deeply personal," says showrunner Terry Matalas.

Terry Matalas, the newly appointed showrunner for Star Trek: Picard 's third and final season, felt the pressure to stick the landing — not just for the audience, but for himself.

Years ago, his love of The Next Generation fueled the Emerson College graduate to become a PA in the Trek production offices, through which he became friends with Seven of Nine (a.k.a. Jeri Ryan ) while working on Voyager and taxied Jean-Luc Picard himself ( Patrick Stewart ) around in a golf cart to the studio stages. Now, here he is, decades later, and it's his prime directive to give the characters he loved as a kid the send-off they never got.

Matalas sees Picard season 3 as the proper "last story" for the Next Generation era. "I think the original series had a final send-off with Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country ," he tells EW of the 1991 movie that brought back the William Shatner -led cast. "This cast," he says, referring to The Next Generation , "never really had that. So that was the goal from the beginning, to send 'em off in one final adventure that was both thrilling and deeply personal."

The mission was to re-assemble the main crew of The Next Generation around Stewart. Gates McFadden . Jonathan Frakes . LeVar Burton . Michael Dorn . Marina Sirtis . Brent Spiner . The whole Enterprise gang. There was no back-up plan.

"It was this or bust, so I had to go hard," Matalas admits. "The good news is I think everybody really wanted to do it. It was something that was in their hearts. The cast certainly wanted to return. They're all lifelong friends. And another chance for them to be reunited on a starship? Who wouldn't say yes to that? The pressure is really finding a story that's worthy of that."

Crushing it

Watching Star Trek with his dad every Sunday from the living room couch, Matalas felt like Captain Picard and his chief medical officer on the Enterprise were among the "will they, won't they" greats of television. "It feels like, 'Why didn't they for decades?'" he asks himself. "It felt like it should have gone there in a feature film. Now that you're here at the end, wouldn't it be great to see, 'Oh, they went there alright.'"

With the return of McFadden as Beverly Crusher, Matalas says "we get to see the fallout of that," as well as "a coming together" in the final season.

"I also think that Beverly really never got her due," he adds. "That was one of the ideas I had from the beginning: The first person you actually saw this season was Beverly Crusher popping in the frame and defending her doctors. She was still a doctor, but she wasn't traditionally the kind of doctor you expected her to be. A lot of time and a lot of discussion with Gates went into that."

Forging a new path

Matalas had conversations with all the legacy Trek actors returning for Picard . He admits there were nerves around telling them where there characters would be after all this time. To get ahead of that, he met with each one individually to lay out his plans. "I was fortunate that, creatively, we were very aligned," he says. "They know their characters better than I do."

He remembers the reaction from Burton, who returns as Geordi La Forge, now with two daughters. Burton's own daughter Mica Burton plays Ensign Alandra La Forge, Geordi's youngest who works alongside him, while actress Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut plays Ensign Sidney LaForge, Geordi's eldest.

"I remember vividly the Zoom conversation I had with LeVar Burton, where I took him through the 10-episode arc I had envisioned for him," Matalas recalls. "I pitched to him this big moment at the end of the season, and by the time I was done, there were tears in his eyes. It dawned on me that I just made Geordi La Forge cry with this story. And then I started to cry."

Worf by way of Kill Bill

Matalas' chat with Dorn went differently. There weren't many tears. Just some references to Kill Bill .

Multiple books and comics have been released since the last movie with the Next Generation cast, which was 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis . They offered clues as to what Worf could have been getting into. "We didn't want to say no to any of those ideas, but we certainly had a vision of where he was now," Matalas notes.

The writer-producer didn't see the fan-favorite Klingon as a starship captain, despite what the stories from those novels and comics might depict. "I see him as a samurai," Matalas notes. "I actually see him with this Klingon sword on his back. I also see him, although this doesn't quite line up with Klingon lore, with a white beard."

According to the showrunner, there was a long pause as Dorn processed this: "He's like, 'Do you mean like Pai Mei from Kill Bill ?' I was like, 'That's a way to go.' And he goes, 'I love it.'"

Butch and Sundance

Another reference Matalas had was the 1969 Western with Robert Redford and Paul Newman, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid . That was his touchstone for Picard's relationship to his former No. 1, William Riker.

Frakes previously appeared on Picard as Riker, but he takes a more prominent role in season 3. "I thought it was important not to just get them all together in the first moment, but to earn each one of these character stories, to give each one of these characters their moment before they come together," Matalas explains.

"If you were going to do a last Next Generation movie, you would really only have two, maybe three hours to do that," he adds. "That's what's beautiful about a 10-episode sort of 'mini' series. You can explore all of them and see how they're different and pair them up."

"A classic Star Trek villain"

If we're going back to the first Golden Age of Star Trek , Matalas felt he needed "a classic Star Trek villain." That's how he describes Amanda Plummer's Vadic.

Details of this character are locked away in a guarded vault deep in Starfleet command, but we know she captains the Shrike warship and has targeted Picard and his old Enterprise buddies for her own reasons.

How is she more classic? "She's a bit more theatrical by intention," Matalas says. "She's a bit more like her father, Christopher Plummer, in Star Trek VI and that was by design." Plummer's Oscar-winning dad played General Chang in The Undiscovered Country . "We wanted someone who would chew the scenery a bit more, someone who was fun to watch," Matalas continues. "Having said that, when you get to know her story, you will find sympathy. Vadic has her reasons for all of this, I say cryptically. When you do [find out], it will make a lot of sense."

From Enterprise to Picard

Among the new faces is a familiar one from the Trek canon.

Actor Todd Stashwick once played a Romulan posing as a Vulcan in a 2004 episode of Star Trek: Enterprise . Stashwick is now back as the very human Liam Shaw, captain of the USS Titan, the flashy ship fans will see in season 3 of Picard . He's a former engineer with a long history within Starfleet. His first officer is Seven of Nine, who was placed in an accelerated Starfleet program after the events of season 2.

Stashwick had worked with Matalas on another sci-fi series, 12 Monkeys . Many writers who worked on that show followed Matalas to Picard . "When we were creating the character, the first thing I said was, 'Captain Stashwick comes in,'" Matalas recalls. "We just kept saying, 'Captain Stashwick! Captain Stashwick!' There was never anyone else in our mind for that role."

What lies beyond the stars?

Matalas is planning season 3 as the last outing for Picard , and the powers that be have already announced these last 10 episodes as the final season. However, executive producer Alex Kurtzman spoke up at the Television Critics Association press tour panel to suggest that maybe the door isn't so closed after all.

"When we started the series, Patrick and we all talked about really wanting it to just be three years, feeling like we could really tell a complete story with the season you're now seeing as our endpoint," Kurtzman, one of the architects of the new Trek -verse, had told reporters at the event in January. "That being said, anything is possible. If a show blows the doors off the place, as we're certainly hoping it will, and we're very, very proud of season 3, who knows?"

Matalas says the future of Picard depends on how viewers react to the "final" (with aggressive air quotes) season. "It's up to the television gods. And by that I mean Paramount+ and Alex Kurtzman," he says. "There's certainly a desire by me and many of the actors to continue some of these stories. I think the way this season ends, there's a tremendous opportunity. So I'd be lying to say that I don't have a thousand and one ideas ready to go. But you know the nature of television is mercurial. So we'll see."

Amanda Plummer of “Pulp Fiction” and “ Star Trek: Picard ” fame and veteran thesps James Russo and Ulrich Thomsen (“The Celebration”) have joined Uwe Bolls’s forthcoming migrant crisis thriller “Run.”

Set to start shooting in Croatia on April 17, the film focuses on a group of desperate migrants as they reach the Italian coast after a perilous journey across the Mediterranean Sea and the impact of their arrival on locals and tourists.

The film’s previously announced cast members include Kristen Renton and Daniel Sauli (“The Deuce”), who worked with Boll on his most recent film, the New York City crime actioner “ First Shift ,” as well as Sammy Sheik and Mohammed Qissi.

Explaining his motivation to tackle the weighty subject and tell this story, Boll told Variety : “I’m a very politically interested person, as my films ‘Stoic,’ ‘Rampage,’ ‘Darfur,’ ‘Heart of America,’ ‘Assault on Wall Street’ or ‘Auschwitz’ show.

“The boat migration through smugglers from Africa into Europe is escalating year by year more and has turned into a lose-lose situation for the population and the migrants.

“The communities who have to take care of the migrants are feeling left alone by politicians and cannot handle the situation anymore. My film shows one day in an Italian coastal town where a violent drama unfolds. So we present a microcosmos showing that the situation will get out of control and possibly very violent.” 

Praising his cast, Boll added that the high-profile thesps were the ideal picks for his challenging film.

Boll wrote, directed and produced “Run,” with Michael Roesch executive producing and handling world sales via his Stuttgart-based Kinostar .

Also joining the production are past Boll collaborators Mathias Neumann (“First Shift”) as DP, Boris Velican (“BloodRayne: The Third Reich”) serving as line producer and editor Ethan Maniquis (“First Shift”).

Post production for the pic will be handled at Tunnel Post in Santa Monica.

Before heading off to Croatia for the start of principle photography on “Run,” Boll will attend the April 10 German premiere of “First Shift” at the Karlsruhe Independent Days International Film Festival, where he’ll also be taking part in a special Q&A.

Lt. M'Ress is a Caitian officer with a seat on the USS Enterprise bridge, created for Star Trek: The Animated Series when Star Trek 's jump to animation meant that the aliens in Star Trek were no longer restrained by what the makeup department could physically create. As the first Caitian in Star Trek , M'Ress sets the standard for the feline alien species , later echoed by Star Trek 's other animated Caitian, Dr. T'Ana (Gillian Vigman) in Star Trek: Lower Decks .

Actor Stephanie Czajkowski suggests that T'Veen may have some Deltan ancestry, but in reality, T'Veen's lack of locks comes from Czajkowski's own battles with cancer.

When Vadic (Amanda Plummer) commandeers the Titan in Star Trek: Picard season 3, episode 8, "Surrender" , T'Veen is one of the Titan bridge officers used as leverage against Vadic's request for Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers). Mr. Mot (Ken Thorley)

In an interesting twist, Mr. Mot is a barber working on the USS Enterprise-D, and happens to be a Bolian, a species that has no hair of their own. Nonetheless, Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) says that the civilian Mot is the best barber in Starfleet . There's more to being a barber than just cutting hair, after all, and Mot's listening ears are available to anyone who comes to sit in his barbershop chair, as long as they don't mind receiving a little free advice on the side.

After providing excellent service to the crew on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Mot grew even more successful. The Bolian barber became an entrepreneur, which is evident by the presence of Mr. Mot's Hair Emporium as one of the many businesses in Stardust City, on the planet Freecloud, as seen in Star Trek: Picard season 1, episode 5, "Stardust City Rag".
