For most Cozumel tours by jeep, it’s recommended to bring biodegradable sunscreen (regular sunscreen is prohibited), sunglasses, a sun hat, a beach towel , and a change of clothes. You’ll also want to bring some money for tips–both pesos and dollars in Cozumel are accepted.

The cost of Cozumel jeep tours varies depending on the type of tour you choose and additional activities. Most Cozumel jeep tours range from $75-$150 USD per person.

Most Cozumel jeep tours are private, but there are also shared tours available. A private tour will allow you to customize your itinerary and enjoy a more personalized experience.

On most Cozumel jeep tours, you’ll get drive along Cozumel’s scenic coastal roads on the southern end of the island. You’ll also to get explore the less-developed eastern side with its rugged beaches and maybe even venture into the jungle for some off-roading.

Most jeeps in Cozumel have manual transmission but sometimes automatic jeeps are available upon request. If you plan to do the driving, it’s best if you know how to drive a stick shift!

Jeeps can typically fit up to 4 passengers but it depends on the type of tour you choose as to whether you’ll be driving or your local guide will be your chauffeur.

🚨 Do you need travel insurance for Mexico? Yes! Most insurance plans in your home country will not cover incidents abroad. I recommend using Travel Insurance Master, which is a handy travel insurance marketplace where you can compare policies. Get a FREE quote by clicking here !

🇲🇽 Traveling to Mexico soon?

These are the Mexico travel resources I use and recommend:

🏨 Hotels : I always find the best deals for Mexico hotels and resorts on Expedia or Booking.com . If you prefer a vacation rental, check VRBO as they are often cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

✈️ Flights : I recommend using Skyscanner for the best Mexico flight deals. Be sure to sign up for their price alerts for your preferred travel dates.

🚗 Rental Cars : I recommend using Discover Cars because you can compare multiple car rental companies and see detailed ratings for overall value, ease of pick-up, efficiency of agents, car condition, and overall time spent.

🚙 Cancun Airport Transportation : I recommend booking a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation for the quickest and most hassle-free option!

🤿 Tours & Activities: I always use Viator or GetYourGuide for booking tours and activities in Mexico. You can cancel up to 24 hours before the tour for a full refund, plus they have excellent customer service if you were to have any issues.

🚨 Travel Insurance: After my Dad broke his hand in a taxi accident in Playa del Carmen, I always recommend buying travel insurance before your trip for added peace of mind! I recommend Travel Insurance Master for short trips or Safety Wing for digital nomads.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen : Don’t forget to add biodegradable sunscreen to your Mexico packing list ! Regular sunscreen is prohibited when swimming in the ocean and cenotes in Mexico, so you’ll need to pack some biodegradable sunscreen for sun protection. I recommend Sun Bum Sunscreen , which is reef-friendly, vegan, and cruelty-free.

Getting to Cozumel

To get to Cozumel you have a couple of options. The easiest way is to fly directly into Cozumel International Airport (CZM). Many major airlines offer flights to Cozumel from various cities in the United States and other countries. Once you arrive at the airport, you can easily reach your destination on the island by shuttle .

Another option is to fly into Cancun International Airport (CUN), which is a popular gateway to the region. From Cancun, you’ll need to make your way to Playa del Carmen , which is about an hour’s drive south of Cancun. There are several transportation options available, including private shuttles , taxis, and public buses (ADO) .

Once you reach Playa del Carmen , you can catch a ferry to Cozumel. The ferry ride takes approximately 45 minutes, and there are multiple departures throughout the day. The ferry companies operating this route include Ultramar and Winjet. The tickets can be purchased at the ferry terminal or online in advance.

If you’re vacationing in Playa del Carmen, the ferry makes it easy to take a day trip over to Cozumel for some snorkeling .

When to Visit Cozumel

The best time to visit Cozumel for snorkeling is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During this time, the weather is generally sunny and the water visibility is at its best. The water temperature is also quite comfortable, ranging from 77°F (25°C) to 82°F (28°C).

However, it’s worth noting that Cozumel can be quite busy with tourists during the peak season, which is from December to February. If you prefer a quieter experience, visiting in the shoulder seasons of November or April may be a good option.

I’ve snorkeled year-round in Cozumel and it’s nearly always wonderful. Occasionally if a storm comes through the water will be a bit cloudy but it clears up quickly.

The Mesoamerican Reef System

The Mesoamerican Reef system is the second-largest barrier reef in the world and stretches over 1,000 kilometers along the coasts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras.

It is a major attraction for snorkelers in Cozumel due to its incredible biodiversity and vibrant coral formations. Snorkeling in Cozumel allows you to explore a small portion of this magnificent reef system , which is home to over 500 species of fish and 65 species of coral.

The crystal-clear waters of Cozumel provide excellent visibility, making it an ideal destination for snorkelers of all skill levels.

Tips For Snorkeling In Cozumel

  • Choose the right location: Cozumel offers numerous snorkeling spots, so it’s important to choose the right one based on your skill level and preferences. By taking a snorkel tour, you’ll be sure to go to a great spot.
  • Bring your own gear: While there are plenty of places to rent snorkeling gear in Cozumel if you have your own equipment, it’s always best to bring it along. This way, you can ensure a proper fit and have gear that you’re comfortable with.
  • If you’re going to be snorkeling a few times on your trip, buying your own equipment may be cheaper than renting. I like this set . It’s not too expensive but really good quality.
  • Use a rash guard : Even with sunscreen, your skin can quickly burn. Wear a rash guard to protect yourself from the sun.
  • Apply sunscreen: Make sure to choose reef-safe sunscreen to minimize any potential damage to the coral reefs in case you end up back in the water.
  • Respect the marine life: Cozumel is home to a diverse range of marine life, including colorful fish, turtles, and coral reefs. It’s important to respect their habitat and avoid touching or disturbing them. Remember, you’re a guest in their environment.
  • Stay hydrated: Snorkeling can be physically demanding, so it’s important to stay hydrated. Bring along a refillable water bottle and drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after your snorkeling adventure.
  • Follow local regulations: Cozumel has specific regulations in place to protect its marine ecosystem. Make sure to follow any guidelines or restrictions set by the local authorities to help preserve the reef system for future generations.

Responsible Snorkeling in Cozumel

Responsible snorkeling in Cozumel is important to ensure the preservation of the marine ecosystem. Here are some tips for snorkeling responsibly:

  • Respect the marine life: Avoid touching or disturbing the coral reefs and marine animals. Keep a safe distance and observe them from afar.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen : Regular sunscreen can contain harmful chemicals that can damage coral reefs. Opt for reef-safe sunscreen that is free of oxybenzone and octinoxate.
  • Do not feed the fish: Feeding fish can disrupt their natural feeding patterns and can lead to dependency on humans for food. Let them find their own food sources.
  • Do not collect souvenirs: It is illegal to collect or remove any marine life or coral from the reefs in Cozumel. Leave everything as you found it to preserve the ecosystem.
  • Practice good buoyancy control: Avoid touching or standing on the coral reefs as this can cause damage. Maintain good buoyancy control and swim with a relaxed and gentle kick.

By snorkeling responsibly, you can help protect the beautiful marine life and coral reefs in Cozumel for future generations to enjoy.

What to Bring for Snorkeling in Cozumel

Bringing your own snorkel gear means that the mask will fit right and the snorkel hasn’t been in hundreds of mouths. (Yes, they disinfect them, but still … ick.)

Also, all snorkels are not created equal. Some let more water in through the top and into your mouth. It’s much better to have a snorkel designed to decrease water intake.

If you want to bring your own snorkel gear, here’s what you need:

Snorkel, mask, and fins. This is a good mid-range set with a dry-top snorkel .

Tours will provide life jackets on request. If you’re going to be snorkeling on your own, this is a good compact, inflatable snorkel vest :

A rash guard is great for protecting your skin from the sun . It will also help you use less sunscreen.

Reef-safe sunscreen will keep you and the coral protected.

Water shoes will protect your feet from rocky beaches. They’re also great for slippery boat docks.

However, they don't let you take any photos and charge $140 for theirs. $140 for digital copies of all your photos or $40 if you want one print of one photo. We paid $110 per person at our hotel and it included entrance, buffet access, taxi and the encounter. They have a sea lion show you can watch as well but we ran out of time. • Nansvacation 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Book a different day pass somewhere else. There was no buffet lunch, just a plate of food that was given to you. That was absolutely horrible. there was no soft drinks or Mexican fruit flavored drinks as advertised. when I mentioned we were supposed to get soft drinks, he said oh no, no drinks come with this. He finally gave us two glasses of water. would never book this again. Read more Written March 15, 2024
  • Avidtraveller0211 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Don’t book off-cruise, but don’t recommend either way If you’re thinking of booking off-cruise, don’t! We booked day passes with lunch/drinks for $48/each. Nothing else is included, even snorkel gear will run you $17/pp. Waited in line at the port for 20-30 minutes for a taxi, then waited almost an hour at check in once we got to the park. Only the drinks/food in certain areas are included, but they are an extra cost in the (very small) beach area and snorkel areas. Food was not great: hamburgers, hot dogs, jello, chips, nacho cheese from a can, etc. Sea lion show is only 15 minutes long. Lines were long everywhere - buffet, bars, bathrooms, etc. Also, be prepared to be bombarded by people selling bracelets, braids, pictures with birds and lizards, ice cream, purses, tequila, etc. it was constant. Not a great experience overall. Will not go back. Sad we wasted a day here. Read more Written March 10, 2024
  • rooneygina 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Mostly worth it, the snorkeling was the highlight. Snorkeling was great, MJ’s rented gear and staff friendly and helpful. Underwater statues of Jesus and Mary were cool! Blue lagoon restaurant had no buffet that was suppose to be included. We did get a plate of food. No choice. Take what you get. They charged us almost 5$ for a bottled water and 15$ for a shot of cheap tequila, I felt exploited. Sea lions show was cute. Pool was nice break, except the smell of sewage nearby. • 690billied 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great place to relax Jose was an awesome guide! The park is amazing! Some of the best snorkeling we have ever done. The food at the buffet lunch was delicious. I can’t remember if our waiter was Manuel or Miguel. But he was great and very attentive. Lots to do. Sea lion, dolphins, manatees and a beautiful beach with lots of chairs. We did tequila tasting and it was some of the best I’ve ever had. Definitely will go again. Read more Written March 6, 2024
  • Ryan J 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great time snorkeling at Chankanaab We got the all inclusive pass which included entrance fee, snorkel gear & lunch including a couple beers for the adults. The weather was great, the water was crystal clear for snorkeling with lots of fish to see & the lunch was good. There are chairs in the shade included. We saw a few iguanas wandering around which was cool. The ruin replicas were also neat to see as was the sea lion show. We liked our time at Chankanaab. Read more Written February 29, 2024
  • Chaskamin 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles On our own most of the day Tour: Blue Cozumel (Chankanaab and Glassboat) The tour was a mess from start to finish. We were given the wrong pick-up time (Cancun hotel zone). The hotel called to find out what was going on after us waiting 1 1/2 hours. Found out we were given the wrong time, and the driver went to the wrong hotel. The driver came back for us and we eventually got going. On the way to the ferry (Winjet) the driver got stuck in traffic. When we got to Playa del Carmin we were rushed to the second floor of a souvenir shop where we paid cash for our Ferry tickets. We were totally confused.... and then rushed to the ferry to travel on our own to find someone with a Cucurumbe shirt in the crowd on the Cozumel. We found there were several other people arriving with us, many complaining about how behind their tours were (Not all Blue Cozumel). My wife and I were put in a taxi and met our guide at Chankanaab park. The park is a bit dated, but our guide did a good job getting some of us snorkeling. The snorkeling at the park was good. We had a so-so lunch and then our guide put us in a taxi for part two which was the Glassboat. My wife and I were told a time when we had to find a taxi and be back at the Ferry. (no guide from here on) Our taxi dropped a group of six of us off, but we had no idea of where to go. We saw a boat, followed it, and got directed to the Glassboat office. Eventually, we got to take the glass boat tour and do a little snorkeling. The snorkeling was not as good as at the park, and those of us in the water got stung by jellyfish...... when we got back to the dock the boat people helped us get a cab back to the ferry terminal... but lots of traffic, and nearing the terminal our cab got rear-ended. We got let out, and not speaking Spanish found a couple that could give us directions to the ferry. We ran. Made it..... When we arrived back at Playa del Carman we saw others from our morning bus ahead of us. We tagged along since we had no idea where to get picked up... In the end, we finally made it back after a 15-hour day. It made a memory. Not really a tour. Read more Written January 24, 2024
  • 702moniqued 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Beware of fire coral!!! This was our second time to the park. The first time was fantastic (back in 2017), this time not so much. Definitely get the all inclusive package or they will nickel and dime you for everything (drinks, food, snorkel gear, etc). There are also vendors in the park setup that try to get you to their booths and are quite pushy. Also, there are NO warning signs, but be aware of fire coral. I climbed on the floating buoy jump deck and got stung by venomous fire coral on my inner thigh. They did spray some vinegar on it, but seemed annoyed. Maybe if you put a warning out, you wouldn’t have to treat these stings. We ended up leaving, grabbing medicine for my leg, then finding another park that offered more with a nicer beach. It’s been 4 days and the sting is very much still there. Read more Written December 18, 2023
  • robertlY4441SZ 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Totally unprofessional, not worth it Totally unprofessional. They just meet you at the entrance and take hours to locate your booking No skiping lines here after that you are taken to a restaurant and they show you where tou can eat from the buffet. This is not an activity as you have to do and ask everything by yourself this is why the price is cheaper than other packages here. I do not recommend this company and bussines. They gave us excellent service and went above and beyond with my husband. He needed help equalizing, Sergio held on to him the whole time. The pictures were excellent as well. • 430marlah 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles LOTS OF WALKING! Vehicles in poor condition. Tour was not as described. Was expensive at $270 usd plus $50 for the ferry ride. We wanted a tour that did not entail too much walking that is not this tour. First the pickup at the hotel at 7 am was 45 minutes late. Went to drop off point and had to wait for others. Then had to walk to ferry. Across to Cozumel. Then walk 6 blocks to a taxi. Drive 45 minutes to a beach adventure park. Had to walk thru the sand for about a kilometre. Lunch was dissapointing. Then get "buggy" a Nissan buggy of sorts with no doors that 4 people ride in. Back seat has crappy seats with no padding. We drove for a long way in the highway then for kilometres on a dirt road with lots of speed bumps and pot holes. Our backs were so sore we couldn't stand to ride in them again. The buggy were very poor condition, they are ready to fall apart, seatbelts don't work, sounded like the tire was going to fall off. Got to another beach to be there for over an hour. Missed the lighthouse cuz we were late. Drive for another couple hours to make it back to Cozumel. Had to walk more to get back to ferry. Was supposed to be back by 5 or 6 pm. Finally got back to hotel at 9 pm. I would only recommend this for younger adults. It was too long for the kids in the group. Read more Written November 23, 2023
  • Cameron F 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Overall not bad, with a few annoyances Everything was great except for the food/ “buffet”. It was not good at all. The shops were great and the beach was great. Snorkeling was awesome as well. The drinks were way over priced for what you get. About as expensive as on the ship, you would think on land they would be cheaper. Very easy to go through whatever money you brought with you. Frequently approached by people trying to sell you things. Even repeats after you have said no thank you. Read more Written November 10, 2023
