12 Nearby Cheap Countries to Visit from Dubai with Easy Visa Requirments

where to travel

Updated: 7 July, 2023

Over the past two years, several countries have slowly begun to open their borders to international travelers, including those who are traveling from the United Arab Emirates, after being kept in their homes for more than two years. Since a number of countries have reduced their restrictions on UAE resident visas, vacation plans do not seem too far away. As a matter of fact, international travel contributes considerably to a country’s economic growth. Thus, it has become necessary for many countries to lift Covid-19 restrictions. As a consequence, these countries have adjusted themselves in order to benefit from the economic benefits of tourists choosing to spend their holidays in their respective countries.

Oman is one of the neighboring countries to the UAE and has both elegant modern structures as well as centuries-old street markets. It is one of my favorite countries in the middle east, where mountains surround its land and there are some unexplainable caves and wadis. The Sultanate of Oman is a great escape for residents of the UAE, who are interested in hiking, seeing dolphins and playing with them, or even just cruising along its beaches. As a matter of fact, it is widely believed that humans have lived in Oman for at least 106,000 years, which makes it one of the oldest countries that have been inhabited by humans ever. Although the government of Oman is strict when it comes to impolite visitors, travelers who adhere to the country’s rules will find this nature-rich country to be a fascinating place. I recommend looking at Musandam, Salalah, Wadi Bani Khalid or Muscat during your next holiday if you are considering traveling to Oman.

Though a proper Oman visa is required to visit most parts of the country, UAE residents and visitors with valid UAE tourist visas are eligible to visit Musandam Dibba. This is done with just an entry permit. You can get the permit by booking a hotel in the Musandam Dibba area or a cruise trip. For other border areas, UAE residents can get a visa on arrival regardless of nationality and passport. For more information with regards to cruise booking, you can ask this musandam dibba cruise operator.

Quick Facts:

Flight Duration : 90-minutes

Vis Requirements : Now all UAE residents can get visa on arrival.

Do you know that Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital, is often compared with Dubai because of its extravagant structures and its enthusiasm for gold? On the other hand, when comparing Azerbaijan’s daily expenses to those of the UAE, you’ll find that they’re nearly half. Approximately 350 mud volcanoes are located in the country, which makes it the country with the most mud volcanoes on the planet. In addition to grand palaces, medieval mosques, luxury seaside resorts, and a skyline filled with contemporary towers, it is filled with numerous other natural and man-made attractions. With the combination of East and West culture along with influences from Middle Eastern, Russian and Turkish cultures, Azerbaijan has a very friendly and welcoming attitude toward tourists.

Geographically, Azerbaijan borders the Caspian Sea in the east, Iran in the south, Armenia in the west, and Georgia and Russia in the north. It is not surprising to see Russian style buildings here since Azerbaijan was a Soviet republic until 1991. During your trip if you meet with Azerbaijan’s native people, expect lengthy and warm greetings and politeness. In Azerbaijan, there is a low rate of aggressive crime, which is one of the reasons why it makes an ideal destination for solo female travelers.

Flight Duration : 3-hours

Vis Requirements : Almost everyone can get visa on e-visa.

The combination of Asian and European cultures in Georgia makes it a country worth visiting. Since the UAE Residents are able to obtain an on-arrival visa, Georgia has become one of the most popular holiday destinations from the UAE. Since independence in 1993 from the Soviet Union, it has become one of the world’s most lucrative countries. Historically, Georgia served as a link between the Middle East and Europe, giving Georgian cuisine a unique blend of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors. The Soviet Union built Georgia, which has many Russian-style buildings, but Old-Tbilisi is irresistible. Old Tbilisi is home to the Peace Bridge, Mother Georgia, Narikala Fortress, Freedom Square, Anchiskhati Basilica and the Theater Clock Tower.

In addition to historical attractions, Georgia has something special to offer for hiking- the stunning country is home to the Caucasus Mountains, which connect the Black Sea and Caspian Sea. Even in summer various areas of the Caucasus mountains are covered with spectacular snow-capped glaciers, crystal clear rivers, and lakes, making it a perfect spot for walking and trekking. If you’re looking for affordable Georgia tours, check out Georgia tour packages here to make your trip cost saving.

Flight Duration : 4 and half-hour

Vis Requirements: Regardless of passport, you can get visa-on-arrial.

Abundant cultural heritage, ancient Christian sights, attractive scenery and scrumptious cuisine, along with a friendly visa policy make Armenia an appropriate country for UAE residents. Armenia borders Georgia in the north, Iran south, Turkey west and Azerbaijan in the east. It’s widely believed that Armenia was the first country to legally adopt Christianity. So prepare yourself to explore the oldest churches and monasteries. Just in case you don’t have much time to spend in Armenia, check out the Tatev monastery. Despite possessing all these enjoyable activities, Armenia remains unspoiled by mass tourism. Armenia is renowned for its rich nature and thick forests. The country capital Yerevan has several appealing buildings and places such as the Republic Square, the Opera house, Cascade and  various parks, etc. When you’re in Yerevan, watch the fountains at Republic Square. Aside from that, Armenia has numerous national parks and reserves such as Dilijan National Park or the Khosrov Reserve. The major problem is communication because the Armenian language is fairly complicated.

It is true that Armenia has a pleasant climate throughout the year. Summer is the most convenient time to visit it. In terms of budget, Armenia is a relatively inexpensive place to visit for UAE citizens.

Vis Requirements: Emirati passports do not need a visa to enter Armenia. Other national depends. Go to this link to check against your passport.

There is no country that deserves to be referred to as the gateway to the West from Asia more than Turkey. Being located between Asia and Europe, Turkey is one of the countries that has everything for tourists. Turkey’s capital Istanbul is a stunning coastal city with a historic heritage. Other than Turkey, none of the non-European countries has that many Bazinteen era buildings. The European side of Istanbul has the endless historical attractions of the Bazinteen Empire. Regrettably, at the moment, the UAE has some political issues with Turkey, but it doesn’t impact UAE residents who travel to Turkey. In fact, Turkey is among the most popular destinations for UAE residents.

For the nature lover, Turkey has a wide range of landscape destinations. Landscapes of Cappadocia, Patara and Kleopatra beach provide best quality nature scenery. Over 1300-year-old Turkish cuisine won’t let you stick with just one food item if you’re the type of food lover you are. Be sure to try corba -a delicious soup, kumpir- baked potato, kofte -meatballs, kebab and baklava. Those who are coffee lovers should not miss Turkish coffee. It’s powerful and tastes delicious. Historically, Turkish people have socialized in coffeehouses, similar to the Middle East and South Asia. If you wish to experience Turkish culture, I endorse you opt for private tour packages . Over the last few years, Turkish currency has been de-valuing so even private guided tours wouldn’t cost you much.

Vis Requirements: If you hold a valid visa or residence permit from any Schengen country, US, UK, or Ireland, you can apply online at www.evisa.gov.tr For a Turkey eVisa, either apply via the official Consular Procedures or visit Natvisa.

 Hagia Sophia

Saudi Arabia

Despite the convenience of a one-hour flight from the UAE, Saudi Arabia has been overlooked by UAE travelers. It’s true that Saudi Arabia’s cities such as Makkah and Madina are loaded with Islamic sacred places. Saudi Arabia has developed tourist attractions for entertainment lovers in other parts of the country. In fact, the Jeddah tower which is supposed to be 3,281 ft (1 km) high will outrank Burj Khalifa upon completion. Apart from modern skyscrapers, now several tourist activities such as desert safaris, water sports, theme parks, food tours etc are also organized in Saudi Arabia.

So, those days are no longer when UAE residents mostly travel to Saudi Arabia for Umrah and Hajj etc. Furthermore, with time, the Kingdom is getting more flexible with non-Muslim travelers. Although it is one of the strongest Muslim countries in the world, it still follows some stick policies. For tourists in Saudi Arabia, particularly non-Muslims, the biggest concern is to respect its moral values. A large number of people, including tourists, have been punished by the Kingdom in the past. However, in recent years, the Saudi King has introduced lots of flexible rules for tourists. The good news is that as long as you adhere to Saudi rules and customs and don’t commit any serious acts against Islamic values, you’ll be in safe hands.

Note: If you’re planning to go to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah, I suggest you check out this Umrah tour operator . The company offers various packages from the UAE by road and flight as well.

Flight Duration : 3 and half-hour to MAKKAH

Vis Requirements: UAE residents need a Saudi visa based on their nationality. GCC citizens, including UAE nationals, can enter without a visa and use National ID cards. Good thing is now Saudi Arabia eVisa allows multiple entries to UAE residents for 1 year from the date of issue.

If there’s any unfortunate country with lots of undesirable media coverage, it’s Pakistan. You can count on me for one thing: western media portray Pakistan inaccurately. It’s true that just like any other country, Pakistan also had some law and enforcement issues in bordering parts of the country. But accusing Pakistan of each blunder in nearby countries is rubbish.

Isn’t it rubbish that Pakistan alone can defeat NATO in Afghanistan and the 700K Indian army in Kashmir with just a few thousand militants?

Anyway, until 2018, Pakistan didn’t pay much attention to tourism. Luckily, Pakistan’s current government led by the captain of the 1992 cricket World Cup winning team, Imran Khan has been doing a tremendous job attracting international tourists. Those international tourists who’ve been into Pakistan proudly call Pakistan the Land of hospitality. Despite lacking a tourism hub, Pakistan has few things to keep visitors entertained. Pakistan brings together historical structures, a beautiful green landscape, high mountain hills, untouched beaches and even the cold desert. On top of all, hospitable locals will be glad to help you. The federal government of Pakistan not too long ago managed to make it easier to visit Pakistan by introducing an eVisa. Considering that the current government is ruled by a strongman whose ambition is to boost tourism to Pakistan, criminal activity against visitors is rare. Visit Pakistan’s northern regions such as Naran & Kaghan valley, Hunza and Swat if you are considering visiting. Thankfully, from UAE, it’s now easier to reach Pakistan’s northern areas with the Pakistan Airlines new direct flight from Dubai to Gilgit.

Additionally, This Kaghan valley tour operator based in Islamabad could help you in organizing your north Pakistan trip by road from anywhere in Pakistan.

Flight Duration : 3 and half-hour to Islamabad

Vis Requirements: Pakistan has recently introduced e-visa. Apart from that, now many countries citizens get visa on-arrval. I suggest you head over to this link to check your eligibility.

With more than 7,000 years of history, ancient architectural wonders, interesting myths, amazing culture, and tasty food, it’s no surprise Egypt is the hottest country to visit from the UAE. Egypt is also renowned for the Pyramids, the Sahara Desert, and the Nile River. Additionally, Egypt is widely known for its entertainment-oriented nature. Since Egypt was penetrated by several world-class imperialist powers in the past, the combination leftovers of those empires creates an exciting combination. Most of those superpowers’ remnants are in Cairo, the country’s capital. The Pyramids of Giza and Nile River cruising are two famous attractions in Cairo. Like the UAE, substantial areas of Egypt contain desert landscapes. The legendary Sahara desert also lies in Egypt. However, like many other developing African and Middle East nations, Egypt is also turning its unoccupied desert into modern tourist sights to attract more international vacationers. Recent $1 Billion worth of the Grand Egyptian Museum will likely be a game-changer for Egypt tourism because it is considered to be the world’s largest archaeological museum, which means history enthusiasts will discover Egypt’s thousands of years of ancient culture under one roof.

Egypt is one of the few African countries with a resort town – Sharm El-Sheikh. The entire Sharm El-Sheikh coastline is packed with high-end resorts, restaurants, and nightclubs. Moreover, the area is endowed with crystal clear water and extensive coral reefs, making Sharm El-Sheikh a popular snorkeling and scuba diving site in Egypt.

Flight Duration : 3-hour and 45-minutes to Cario

Vis Requirements: Egypt permits GCC citizens to enter visa-free, whereas UAE residents of other nationalities may require an Egypt e-visa for visiting.

Another dream and easy to access destination for UAE residents, Sri Lanka is a tropical island nation located next to the Maldives. Due to its wonderful marina & wildlife, sunny weather conditions, and attractive seashores, Sri Lanka is often referred to as the ‘Wonder of Asia’. This small island of Sri Lanka is also renowned for its abundant biodiversity, cinnamon production, and tea exportation. If you wish to experience a safari within a four-hour flight from Dubai, Sri Lanka won’t spoil your plans. Large elephant- and leopard-filled national parks, like Yala, Minneriya, and Udawalawe have almost everything for wildlife enthusiasts.

In terms of water sports and tropical beaches, Sri Lanka is an excellent alternative to the Maldives. It is impossible for it to offer everything Maldives offers. However, it’s ideal for UAE residents and honeymoon hunters who couldn’t visit Maldives due to expensive resorts. As soon as you land at Colombo airport, be prepared to meet smiling and well-mannered people. In Sri Lanka, marine life continues to flourish throughout the years. From dolphin watching to scuba diving, or even surfing, Sri Lanka can prove itself as an outstanding vacation destination. When exploring Sri Lanka, it’s better to book a private taxi. As a result of the recent covid crisis, Sri Lanka is currently suffering through a major economic downturn.

Flight Duration : 4-hour and 45-minutes to Cario

Vis Requirements: No matter what passport you have, you can get Sri Lanka e-visa.

Snakes, Asian black bears, black panthers, and several other animals can be observed in India, making it one of the most popular places in Asia for animal lovers.

Even though in recent years, violence against minorities has increased up, most parts of India are safe for tourists. However, if you’re solo female travel, you should be extra cautious as sexual harassment against foreigners and female travellers in certain parts of India including the capital Delhi is usual. If truth be told, In India at every 20 minutes a girl is raped as per TOI Report . Aside, Taxi scams, pickpockets are common in India. Beaches and cities like Budva, Kotor, and Herceg Novi, which are ideal for swimming, sailing, and water sports, can be found along the stunning Adriatic Sea coastline. 13 Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Last-Minute Holiday (Direct Flights & Easy Visa Process)

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

After years of traveling, you’d expect me to be one heck of an organized traveler- you’d assume I’d always plan trips at least months in advance, always have my visas organized, and be a pro at packing quickly. And, I’m not in the least bit embarrassed to say that you’d be wrong on all three counts. And that’s why I need to be aware of countries to visit from Dubai that are easy to get to.

I’m very much a last-minute or at the most a two-weeks-before planner, and so I often choose to go where I can get visas quickly and easily (on arrival and/or as a UAE resident), or to places for which I already have a multiple entry Schengen visa . And I need at least four hours to pack for any kind of trip because packing light means having to strategize- and that takes time.

So, I get it- I really do, when you say you love to travel, but sometimes just can’t be bothered to plan everything months in advance, sort out itineraries and visas and hotels and everything else, especially if it’s not just you, but a spouse, group or family that’s also counting on you.

I am a professional travel blogger and I still hate the amount of time it takes to organize trips.

No one needs that kind of stress to go on a holiday. And as an Indian passport holder, I know that waiting in anticipation to get your visa in time, is not a pleasant experience at all.

So, if you’re based in Dubai (or the rest of the UAE or elsewhere in the GCC), and the only reason you’ve been putting off a trip is a lack of time and advance planning, I’ve got you covered with this list of countries to visit from Dubai that are great for your next holiday, and that you can get to easily with direct flights and a smooth and easy visa process (especially if you’re a UAE resident, or have a multiple-entry Schengen, UK or US visa) even on a last-minute plan.

By the way, if you’re looking for insider tips about cool restaurants, best cafes in Dubai , romantic hotels in Dubai , attractions and things to do in and around Dubai, and cool day trips from Dubai , join my Dubai Travel Planning Group on Facebook.

Incredible Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday

1. azerbaijan.

Still a largely off-the-beaten-path destination in the Caucasus (especially when you consider all the attention that Georgia gets), Azerbaijan is a country by the Caspian Sea that lies on the ancient Silk Road in Central Asia, a place that since it’s ancient origins has welcomed travelers and cultures from around the world. And it’s one of the lesser-known but still amazing countries to visit from Dubai.

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

Some of the best places to visit on a short trip include Baku, the fire temple-museum of Ateshgah and the rock carvings at the UNESCO Site of Qobustan National Park, Tufandagh Mountain Resort (for snow, views and skiing) and Qabala (to see beautiful nature), and the crafts village of Lahic.

The capital Baku is a modern city also home to an old town, known as Icherisheher that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with sights such as The Maiden Tower, Palace of the Shirvanshahs, mosques, and caravanserais- guesthouses for merchants who arrived by sea.

In contrast to this, you’ll find Gothic, Renaissance and Art Noveau architecture (from the oil boom period) and modern buildings with fluid lines such as The Flame Towers and the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center designed by architect Zaha Haddid.

In Baku, you’ll find great local and international restaurants and cafés, lively squares and promenades, theaters, galleries and museums, bars and nightlife, and shopping in boutiques, markets and malls. Azerbaijani cuisine is delicious and rich, and one of the highlights of any trip to Azerbaijan is tasting the fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables. Azerbaijan also has a rich heritage of arts and crafts, and Azerbaijani carpets are so rich, unique and intricate, you’ll never have seen anything like them.

If you have more time, Azerbaijan has some truly awe-inspiring landscapes that you can see in places such as Qabala, Yengija forest and Nohur Lake, as well as spa hotels for a relaxing getaway surrounded by nature.

Why Go: For cosmopolitan Baku, ski and snow resort in Tufandagh, quaint villages, great hospitality, delicious food, and nature.

When to Go: Azerbaijan is a year-round destination. The best times to go are during spring, summer and fall, so between February/March and October. Winter has its own appeal- you can go skiing in the mountains (such as in Tufandagh) or experience traditional sporting events in Sheki.

How to Get There: If arriving by air, you’ll fly into the capital Baku. There are direct flights from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Jeddah, Kuwait, New York, London, Milan, Paris, Prague, Tbilisi, Russia, Turkey, and other Post-Soviet countries in Europe.

If you’re going from Dubai, Flydubai flies directly to Baku, as does Azerbaijan Airlines, at the time of writing. Use my favorite flight search site Skyscanner to look for flights to Baku .

There are also rail connections with Tbilisi and Russia and bus connections with Georgia , Turkey and Russia.

Visa for Azerbaijan: E-visas are now available for Azerbaijan. You can check your eligibility and apply here or here .

If you’re a UAE resident, have at least six months left on your UAE resident visa and your passport, and have return tickets booked, then you can get visa on arrival in Azerbaijan (at the time of writing). It’s always best to check current visa rules before you travel .

Where to Stay in Baku: Dinamo Hotel Baku is a luxurious sports-themed hotel with a fantastic restaurant and bar, great breakfast, and stylish rooms in a historic building close to sights of interest and attractions.

To stay in the heart of nature at a spa resort, consider the Qafqaz Thermal Spa and Resort .

If you live in Dubai, then you probably know someone- a friend or relative or colleague who has been to Georgia. Georgia sees a lot of tourists from the Middle East and is one of the most popular countries to visit from Dubai, especially during the Eid holidays. All of this attention is rightly deserved.

Abanotubani, Tbilisi Old Town: 10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

Georgia’s capital Tbilisi is both charming and eclectic. There’s an old town with hilltop churches, a fortress, winding lanes and backstreets with run-down buildings and old architecture with beautiful colorful balconies. Soviet-style compounds give way to houses and art cafés, women bake bread in basement bakeries, and artists sell their wares in parks.

Flea markets, garden, busy squares, sulphur baths, fascinating architecture, theater, and opera and ballet- these are just some of the things you can experience in Tbilisi. Here’s my ultimate guide to Tbilisi that you’ll find useful if you plan to spend a short break or a few days in the city.

Watch My Video of Tbilisi

Georgian cuisine is delicious , hearty and affordable- think Georgian pizza or khachapuri- freshly baked bread topped with cheese, eggs and other toppings, flavorsome khinkali- soup dumplings, succulent kebabs, and lobio, a comforting stew of kidney beans, onions, and herbs.

Further away, are the remarkable mountain landscapes of Svaneti (great for hiking), and Kazbegi and Gudauri (where you can go paragliding and skiing), and mystical cave cities (Vardzia) that still house monks, churches and monasteries. If you like beaches, it’s worth exploring Batumi , and finally, let’s not forget the wine region of Kakheti. Georgia claims to be the birthplace of wine, and well, the wine really is something special. You can do a winery tour in Kakheti where you can go wine tasting.

It’s worth mentioning that Georgians are very warm and friendly, and as an Indian, I had a great experience while traveling around Georgia .

When to Go: Spring, summer, fall and winter. Late spring (mid-April and May) and early summer are best to go hiking. Summer (July and August) can be very hot and humid, but it’s still a good time to go to the coastal region of Batumi, or hiking in regions that otherwise are inaccessible due to snow in winter.

September-October or fall is a good time to see the changing colors or the wine harvest season. Visit in winter if you want to go skiing in Gudauri, or don’t mind the cold and want to experience Christmas traditions. Given how close Tbilisi is to Dubai, you can easily visit on a long weekend with little planning.

Mestia, Svaneti Georgia

How to Get There: The easiest way to get to Georgia is to fly to Tbilisi. There are direct flights from Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, Moscow, Baku, Munich, Vienna , Amsterdam, Paris, London, Frankfurt, Tel-Aviv, Athens, Kiev, Astana, and other Post-Soviet countries.

Look for flights to Georgia from Dubai .

You can also travel to Tbilisi via bus or road from Baku and Yerevan .

Visa for Georgia: Georgia now issues e-visa making it easy for tourists to come to Georgia. Check eligibility and apply here or here . If you aren’t sure, check the visa regime with your country here.

If you’re a UAE resident, then you’re eligible to get a visa on arrival if you have at least six months left on your resident visa and passport and have return tickets booked. But like I always say, these things can change quickly, so best to check visa rules just before you go.

In 2016-17, there were reports of Indians being denied entry into the country even when they had e-visas/visas. I cannot comment on this because with me visiting as an Indian passport holder with a UAE resident visa and Schengen multiple-entry visa, it was a smooth process.

Where to Stay in Tbilisi: From hostels for budget travelers and very affordable apartments to family-run and boutique hotels and fancy luxury hotels, Tbilisi offers plenty of choices for accommodation.

From my experience, I can recommend Falcon Apartments Rustaveli , one of many places I stayed at during my month long visit. You can also look for more options below or read in detail about my advice on where to stay in my Tbilisi guide .

You can probably tell that I love the Caucasus, and Armenia is the third country from the region that I highly recommend for an easy last-minute and oh-so-cheap holiday from Dubai. Armenia is home to dramatic mountain landscapes that seem like they were painted, fantastic hiking trails, medieval monasteries, and the capital Yerevan- an intriguing modern city with plenty of art, culture, museums and sights to keep you busy on a short break.

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

Considering how close it is to Dubai, I’m surprised that it’s not more popular as one of the top places to visit from Dubai.

For nightlife in Yerevan, expect wine bars, jazz bars, underground bars, and rooftop bars, and a mix of laidback casual bars, places with live music and dancing, as well as nicer, sophisticated bars in fancy hotels.

While in Yerevan, you absolutely should take one evening to watch opera or ballet at the Armenian National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet. We watched a grand ballet from front row seats at tickets that cost only $10 each!

Yerevan also has good shopping if you’re into brands and such, also local designer boutiques, and you can get a nice chunk of your money back at the airport as shopping above a certain amount is tax-free.

Apart from exploring Yerevan, and really taking it all in slowly while you enjoy the amazing restaurants and local food as well as wine bars (the local wines are great), you can also take day trips to Lake Sevan, Geghard Monastery, Debed Canyon. If you love nature and hiking, don’t think twice before keeping a day or two to visit and explore Dilijan National Park.

The best part? Yerevan isn’t nearly as crowded as Tbilisi, and it feels more modern and European than Tbilisi as well- if you’re after that sort of vibe.

Why Go: To enjoy city life, art and culture, good food and wine, nightlife, and shopping in Yerevan, to take day trips to see nature and monasteries, and to go hiking in Dilijan National Park.

When to Go: Late spring is pleasant and in late April-May, temperatures are between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius with sunny days. Nights can occasionally be chilly (10 to 12 degrees Celsius) with some rainy evenings.

In summer, between June and August you can expect daytime temperatures between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius, which is still pleasant, if you’re coming from Dubai. Fall, in September and October is also a good time to visit for mild weather and too see beautiful autumn foliage. Winters in Yerevan can be cold and snowy, but you can still visit if you’re after that kind of weather and a bit of skiing.

How to Get There: You’ll likely fly into Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan if you’re coming by air. There are direct flight connections from Dubai , Sharjah, Athens, Beirut, Berlin, Istanbul, Moscow, Paris, Tbilisi, Vienna and Warsaw, among others. Flydubai offers cheap flights to Yerevan. You can also look for other options here .

There are also bus connections with Tbilisi , Georgia, as well as train connections with Tbilisi and Batumi in Georgia.

Visa for Armenia: Many nationalities are exempt from visa to enter Armenia. Check the visa rules for your nationality here . If you need to get a visa, check if you’re eligible for an e-visa or check rules and apply here .

If you’re a UAE resident, and have a return ticket, and six months left on your UAE residency and passport, then you’re eligible to get a visa on arrival in Yerevan. As always, these things can and do change quickly, so check visa requirements just before your trip. But the ease of getting a visa on arrival for UAE residents, without question, was one of the main reasons Ankit and I booked a last-minute trip to Yerevan (we booked just four days before our date of departure).

Where to Stay in Yerevan: In Yerevan, you’ll find hostels, apartments, budget hotels and luxury hotel chains. Look for accommodation options here:

In my opinion, Istanbul is one of the greatest cities in the world-its perfection evident the very moment you lay eyes upon it for the first time with the silhouettes of the  Hagia Sophia  and the Blue Mosque standing proud by the  Bosphorus straddling two continents . Being in Turkey cannot be compared to being elsewhere in Asia, the Middle East or anywhere else for that matter. Without a doubt, Turkey is one of the best places to visit from Dubai on holiday.

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

Turkey’s landscapes are unbelievable and a photographer’s dream- you only need to lay eyes on  Cappadocia  or  Pamukkale  to know this is true. And history is everywhere; in the old town of Istanbul, the  underground cave cities in Cappadocia  and  the ruins of Ephesus . Turkish  food is incredible  so be prepared for the extra pounds, as food is a real highlight.

Istanbul is the kind of city where you’re surrounded by historical and cultural treasures, where friendly sellers will offer you a cup of tea when you walk through old market lanes on a warm evening, where you can joins the local to eat simple fish sandwiches seaside, drink beer in bars that spill out on the streets, and dance the night away at one of the city’s fancy nightclubs- all in one day.

There’s also good shopping in Istanbul- clear from the fact that most locals look like they’ve stepped out of the pages of a Zara lookbook, with many Turkish designers selling clothing and shoes in stylish boutiques quietly tucked away in backstreets.

When to Go: Spring (March to June) and Autumn (September-October) are the busiest seasons for Turkey because of great weather and long days with little or no rain. Summer (June to September) can be quite hot, but that means you’ll also find less crowds and more reasonable prices.

I visited in winter (December) and while winter (November to February) can be chilly and a bit rainy, that’s the time I fell in love with Turkey. Also, winter sees much fewer crowds and easy availability for hotels, plus lesser crowds in places such as Cappadocia as well.

How to Get There: Turkey offers flight connections to Dubai , Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi, as well as the US, UK, Thailand, Japan, and European cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Milan, Vienna, and others through its airports in Ankara, Antalya, Izmir and Istanbul, with Istanbul offering the best connectivity.

Look for flights to Turkey :

Turkey also has rail connections with London and some other European cities such as Budapest and Sofia . There are also ferries from Greece and Cyprus.

Visa for Turkey:

Check your visa eligibility and rules for travel to Turkey. If you’re eligible for one, you can apply for an e-visa here .

If you’re going to Turkey from Dubai, you’ll need to apply through VFS, read the visa application requirements and process here .

Where to Stay in Istanbul: In Istanbul, you’ll find hostels, apartments, boutique and family-run hotels as well as major international hotel chains.

Look for accommodation in Istanbul:

5. Sri Lanka

Pristine palm-fringed beaches, whale-watching in the Indian Ocean, fortified cities with colonial architecture, cave temples and lush forests, hiking trails , an ancient Ayurveda heritage, wellness resorts , vibrant festivals , and spotting leopards in the wild on safari , these are just some of the diverse experiences you can have in Sri Lanka . This amazing island nation is one of the coolest places to visit from Dubai especially if you’re looking for a cheap holiday.

Things to do in South Sri Lanka

While the nature is definitely a highlight, one of the things that stands out about the country when you visit is the hospitality and friendliness of Sri Lankans, whether it’s is the cities or in the beach towns. The unique cuisine is another highlight. Expect seasonal dishes with fresh fruits and vegetables, delicious seafood preparations and plenty of flavors and spices, as well as street food.

Watch my Video of Safari in Sri Lanka

When to Go: November to March-April is the best time to visit Sri Lanka, specially if you want to avoid the sweltering summer temperatures, humidity and the rains.

How to Get There: The best way to get to Sri Lanka is to fly to the capital Colombo. There are direct flight connections from Dubai , Abu Dhabi, Muscat, Jeddah, many Indian cities, Maldives, London, Melbourne, Seychelles, Tokyo, Singapore, Beijing, Shanghai, Jakarta and other cities in the Middle East and Asia.

Look for other flight options.

Visa for Sri Lanka: Many nationalities are eligible for the Sri Lanka e-visa . If you’re eligible, you can apply for it online to get an authorization letter before you arrive.

Where to Stay in Sri Lanka: Around Sri Lanka, you’ll find several incredible and unique properties- from luxurious safari villas and beachfront resorts, to luxury treehouses, Ayurveda wellness resorts and family-run boutique hotels and guesthouses.

If you like beaches, consider Cinnamon Hikka Tranz or Cinnamon Bey Beruwala . If you’re looking for a health focused retreat, consider the Siddhalepa Ayurveda Resort . One of the highlights of my last trip was to stay in a safari villa at Cinnamon Wild Yala .

If you live in Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE, and still haven’t taken the time to explore Oman, then you need to change that right away. Right next door to the UAE, but vastly different in terms of both landscapes and culture, Oman offers a taste of slow living in the Middle East. Understandably, it is one of the best countries to visit from Dubai, and many tourists visiting the UAE also combine it with a trip to Oman.

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

While the capital Muscat is a modern city, it’s not the kind that needs escaping from- it’s neither overly commercial, nor touristy. Sights in Muscat include the Muttrah Souk, a traditional restored market where you’ll find souvenirs such as beautiful lamps, silver Omani daggers called khanjar , frankincense, oud perfume, traditional attire, and more, Al Alam Palace- the Sultan’s palace, the Royal Opera House, and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. Other cities such as Nizwa are also great in that they feel very authentic.

If you like nature and activities, then you’ll love exploring sights such as Wadi Bani Khalid and Wadi Shab, the lush green landscapes of Salalah, and go hiking through Omani villages, rugged wadis and along terraced farms in Jabal Akhdar (something you can do when you stay at the Alila Jabal Akhdar ), that can be cooler than Muscat by at least 15 degrees Celsius around the year.

If you’re visiting Oman with family, you might be interested in my review of the family-friendly Millennium Resort Mussanah .

Watch my Video of Hiking in Jebel Akhdar

When to Go: Oman is a year-round destination and if you’re visiting from Dubai, then it might be a great idea to head to the mountains in Jabal Akhdar or to Salalah, both of which are likely to be much cooler than Dubai and Muscat.

How to Get There: The best and quickest way to get to Oman is to fly into Muscat or Salalah. Muscat offers connections to several international cities worldwide.

Look for flights to Muscat or Salalah from Dubai.

You can also get to Oman from Dubai by road, crossing the border in either Hatta, Buraimi or the Dibba transitional border, depending on where in Oman you’re going.

Visa for Oman:

Oman offers e-visas for many nationalities. Check your eligibility and apply for an e-visa before you arrive in Oman. If you’re a UAE or GCC resident, you still need to apply for an e-visa depending on the category.

At the time of writing, visas are also issued at the UAE-Oman border in Hatta, but if you’re visiting during a long weekend or a public holiday, then you should know that you’re likely to have to wait for several hours at the border to get your visa issued. On a recent long weekend, a four-hour journey turned into a seven-hour one, thanks to delays and long queues at the visa office at the border.

Where to Stay in Oman: There are some lovely hotels and resorts in Oman, from family-friendly beach resorts such as Millennium Resort Mussanah and the luxurious Six Senses Zighy Bay (perfect for active, beach-loving couples) to Alila Jabal Akhdar (a mountain resort great for those who love hiking or relaxing in nature).

Read my review of Millennium Resort Mussanah and my review of Alila Jabal Akhdar and book here, or look for other options:

7. Maldives

That the Maldives are astoundingly beautiful is no secret- I’m sure you’ve seen photos and drone videos of white sand beaches and overwater villas over turquoise waters. The Maldives are like paradise for beach lovers and those who love diving and snorkeling.

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

While there are plenty of luxury resorts in the Maldives, what you might not know is that there are also many guesthouses and boutique hotels that are perfect for independent travelers and those on a budget. So if you’re looking for a cheap holiday from Dubai, it’s very much do-able.

While many tourists choose not to, it’s worth taking a bit of time to explore Male and get a sense of what life is really like for the locals- far removed from the world of luxury resorts on private islands.

Why Go: For paradise-like beaches, snorkeling, diving and water activities, for a romantic getaway, or to go diving.

When to Go: Visit the Maldives from November to March so that daytime temperatures are pleasant and there’s no rainfall to dampen your holiday plans.

How to Get There: The best way to get to the Maldives is to fly into Male. There are direct flights from Dubai , Abu Dhabi, London, Bangkok, Beijing, Colombo, several Indian cities, Istanbul, Moscow, Muscat, and a few other cities in the Middle East.

Look for flights to the Maldives .

Visa for Maldives: It’s so easy to travel to the Maldives because all nationalities get a free visa on arrival, provided you’ve got a return ticket booked, a machine-readable passport with at least six months validity, and sufficient funds to cover your stay. Check visa rules here .

India is both diverse and intense, especially if you aren’t South Asian yourself, but as a destination, it’s unlike anywhere else on the planet. India’s diversity is not only in its many cultures, religions and languages, but also in its landscapes.

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

While you’ve probably heard of the forts and palaces of Rajasthan ( Jaipur and Udaipur), and the grandeur of Taj Mahal, or the nightlife and beaches of Goa, you might not know that northern India is home to some breathtaking landscapes that hikers will appreciate, whether in Leh-Ladakh or in little hamlets in the Himalayas. Arunachal Pradesh is a great adventure destination with plenty of opportunities to go hiking, biking and rafting.

In southern India, Kerala is perfect for a bit of downtime in the heart of nature- think traditional houseboats on quiet backwaters that offer a taste of slow rural life in fishing villages. And Indian cities such as Mumbai, Kolkata, Banglaore, Amritsar and Delhi, among others, each have a different kind of vibe and plenty to offer in terms of dining, entertainment, nightlife and shopping.

My biggest piece of advice, if you’re thinking of traveling to India on a short trip (even a week is short for India) is to pick one region and visit at the most two to three places during that time that are close to each other geographically.

Traveling in India is intense- everything from the language barrier to arranging your own transportation and getting to places can be challenging- you don’t want to get burnt out on your holiday by trying to do too much in limited time.

On the plus side, India is close to Dubai, and it isn’t expensive- so it’s ideal if you’re looking for a cheap holiday from Dubai.

Why Go: For bucketlist sights such as the Taj Mahal, for mountain towns and villages in the Himalayas, for bustling cities, for palaces and forts, for adventure off-the-beaten-path and to relax in southern India.

When to Go: Visit between October and March to avoid hot, humid weather and the monsoons.

How to Get There: You can fly into major Indian cities from around the world and there are direct flights from Dubai .

Look for flights to India.

Visa for India: To arrange a visa for India, you’ll have to plan well in advance, as it can take longer than expected. I’m Indian and don’t need a visa but from what I hear from friends of other nationalities, Indian visas can be well, a time-consuming process.

Check eligibility and see if you can get an online visa for India . Also, I suggest making a few calls to the Indian consular services in your country of residence to check the best way to get a visa for India where you live.

Where to Stay in India:

While the might Everest and epic Himalayan views are certainly Nepal’s biggest draw, Nepal is a country that isn’t just for trekkers and hardcore adventurers, but also for those interested in cultural experiences in medieval cities with rich heritage- such as Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur . With regular flights, it’s one of the best countries to visit from Dubai.

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

Nepal is full of spiritual experiences- temples, monasteries and easy trails in the Kathmandu Valley that are nothing short of therapeutic. It was here that I fell in love with hiking and I didn’t even make it to legendary trails such as the Everest Base Camp or the Annapurna Trail.

Elsewhere, Nepal offers plenty of opportunities to step outside your comfort zone, whether it’s to go rafting in its wild rivers or bungee jump or paraglide. If you’ve always dreamt of going on safari, then visit Chitwan National Park.

The Nepalese are a warm, resilient people- eager to bounce back after the effects of the 2014-2015 earthquakes. Around the country, you’ll find English is spoken quite a bit, and even where there isn’t outside of the main tourist areas, you’ll find the locals to be so helpful- they’ll be willing to go out of their way to help.

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

Religion is important in everyday life- and even if like me, you aren’t religious, you’ll find yourself intrigued. Nepalese food is great too- comforting dal bhat and tasty momos (dumplings) and hearty soups- just the kind of thing you need after a long day of exploring.

Considering how budget-friendly Nepal is, it’s one of the best places to visit from Dubai, on a cheap holiday.

When to Go: Autumn (September to November) and Spring (February to late April) are the best times to visit weather-wise. Best to avoid the pre-monsoons and monsoons and the chilly winter season, especially if you want to spend time exploring outdoors (and really you will because that’s where the main draws are).

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

How to Get There: You’ll have to fly into the country’s only international airport close to Kathmandu. There are direct flights from Dubai , Sharjah, Delhi, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Mumbai and Bangalore.

Also search for other flight options here.

Visa for Nepal: Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival in Nepal once they arrive at the international airport. Check your eligibility and visa rules and if you need to, you can apply here .

Where to Stay in Nepal:

Where you’ll stay will largely be dependent on the type of activities you’re hoping to do. While you can stay in Kathmandu for city life, and to do daytrips to places such as Bhaktapur, Bodhanath and Patan, you can also choose to stay a few days each in other places such as Pokhara where you’ll be closer to hiking trails and nature spots.

I’ve said it many times before and I’ll say it again- there is no other feeling in the world that compares to when you see the ancient Nabataean capital of Petra in Jordan for the first time. I don’t know what time travel feels like, but it must not be very different from what it feels like walking through the Siq, a swirling 1km long canyon with smooth sandstone walls that leads to the rose-colored Treasury or Al Khazneh. That alone is reason enough for Jordan to be on this list of top countries to visit from Dubai.

A Road trip across Jordan: 10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

Whether you spend just a day seeing a bit of Petra, or spend two to three days hiking there, or decide to stay overnight and see it lit up after sunset, Petra is the kind of place that will leave you awestruck. Further away, the desert of Wadi Rum, where you can follow in the camel tracks of Lawrence of Arabia , feels like you’ve arrived on another planet where the landscape is just sand dunes shining under a glimmering moon.

If you love hiking, then the Jordan Trail is a relatively new 600km long trail that you can either hike entirely over 40 days or hike parts of to see the country’s rich and diverse landscapes.

If you love the sea, then you’ll love the coastal town of Aqaba where sunny days, diving, snorkeling, boat rides and fresh seafood await. Floating in the Dead Sea is, of course, another one of Jordan’s bucket list experiences. The capital Amman is full of character with Roman ruins, low-rises, residential districts, markets, mosques, cafés, art galleries and bars, as well as plenty of restaurants serving international and local food.

When to Go: To be able to explore outdoors, visit Jordan in either Autumn (September to November) or Spring (March to May). In Summer (June to August), the days are long and sunny but the temperatures can reach 40 degrees Celsius, which might be a tad too much if you’re not used to it.

How to Get There: You’ll fly either into Amman or Aqaba. There are direct flights to Amman from Dubai , Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Kuwait, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Bangkok, Moscow, Paris, London, New York, Frankfurt, Rome, Vienna and other cities.

Check other flight options here:

Visa for Jordan : Several nationalities are eligible for a visa on arrival in Jordan. Check your eligibility and visa rules here and here .

At the time of writing, Indians are eligible for a visa on arrival in Jordan, but not Filipinos, provided they have a passport that’s valid at least for six months.

Where to Stay in Jordan: I’ve stayed at the Kempinski Ishtar Dead Sea and the Kempinski Aqaba and can recommend both.

11. Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is a Central Asian gem that should be on your bucket list if you have a love of hiking in spectacular landscapes- think turquoise lakes, breathtaking mountains, views to make you forget the notion of time, and overnighting in yurts in the wilderness.

10+ Countries to Visit from Dubai for Your Next Holiday: Direct Flights & Easy Visas for your last-minute holiday.

This is a destination for the intrepid traveler who cherishes the opportunity to experience local immersion, culture, and the many benefits of community-based tourism. Given how easy it is to get to from Dubai, it’s one of the best countries to visit from Dubai for adventure and nature lovers.

When to Go: June to September- summer is ideal for hiking.

How to Get There: You can fly to the capital Bishkek via Dubai, Istanbul, Tashkent, Almaty and Moscow.

Look for flights to Bishkek .

Visa for Kyrgyzstan: Many nationalities do not need a visa to enter Kyrgyzstan for 60 days, while others can get a visa on arrival. Yet others, including Indians, are eligible for e-visa . Check your visa eligibility and rules .

12. Seychelles

Like the Maldives, the Seychelles are the ideal destination for vacationers who like the idea of time in an island paradise with azure waters, gorgeous beaches and days filled with diving, snorkeling and downtime on the sand.

If you’re looking to get away from it all, or go on honeymoon or babymoon, then you will love the Seychelles. There are various resorts that you can choose to stay in depending on your preferences and availability.

The best part? It’s a visa-free country so if you find affordable flights and accommodation, then it’s super easy to organize a last-minute trip. This is one of the big reasons why it’s one of the best countries to visit from Dubai, especially for those of us who need to apply for a visa to go anywhere.

Why Go: To vacation in an island paradise and enjoy snorkeling, diving, watersports and hiking on forest trails.

When to Go: The Seychelles are a year-round destination and April to November is an ideal time to visit.

How to Get There: You’ll fly into Mahe, the entry point to the other islands in the Seychelles. There are direct flights from Dubai , Abu Dhabi, London, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Paris and other cities.

Look for flights to the Seychelles.

Visa for Seychelles: Seychelles is a visa- free country and anyone can enter visa-free as long as they have a valid passport, onward tickets booked and sufficient funds to cover their stay.

An under-the-radar island in East Asia, Taiwan offers a surprisingly diverse mix of experiences ; beautiful national parks and mountainous scenic areas with hiking trails and few visitors, indigenous cultures rich in tradition, art and crafts, delicious cuisines from the mountains and coast, and cities that are effortlessly cool, fashionable, hipster, arty, and intriguing, all at once.

Read my week-long itinerary for Taiwan .

From national parks, cherry blossoms and indigenous culture to food & art in the cities, see the best of Taiwan in a week with this 8-day Taiwan itinerary. Here are the very best things to do and places to visit in Taiwan plus practical information to help you plan your trip. #Taiwan #Taiwantravel #timeforTaiwan #heartofAsia

Then there’s Taipei- a city that changed the way I thought of Asian capitals. None of the chaos, none of the crowds- calm, laidback, trendy, modern and orderly, Taipei is the kind of city you don’t need to escape from. Plus there are tons of cool things to do in Taipei .

There’s culture in the art galleries, delicious food in Taipei’s night markets , districts and cultural parks, shopping from designer boutiques and international chains to pop-up stores, and a dining scene that includes Michelin-starred restaurants, street food, and hole-in-the-wall places serving traditional and local food. For nightlife, expect eclectic bars, trendy wine bars, slick rooftop bars, speakeasy bars and nightclubs for every taste.

Watch my Video of Taiwan

Further away, nature lovers will appreciate the quiet hiking trails and sublime mountaintop sunrises in the Alishan National Scenic Area, as well as the cherry blossoms that adorn the country’s landscapes from January to April.

It’s also worth timing your visit around the Taiwan Lantern Festival, held in a different city each year where thousands of lanterns, created by local and international artists, around traditional and modern themes, light up the sky, land and water and attract locals and tourists from around the world. In 2020, the Taiwan Lantern Festival will be held from 8 th to 23 rd February 2020 in Taichung.

And the people? Friendly, respectful, welcoming (also of diversity) and so polite they put the rest of the world to shame. In fact, Taiwan is a Muslim-friendly country with several Muslim-friendly hotels and restaurants serving halal food and the availability of prayer rooms and mats around the country. This is why it’s on my list of the best countries to visit from Dubai- because Taiwan is making travel more accessible for Muslims.

When to Go: The best times to visit are Spring (March to May), that is also a good time to see the cherry blossoms, and Autumn (October and November). Winter (December to February) is also a good time if you don’t mind the chilly nighttime temperatures.

How to Get There: There are direct flights to Taipei from several Asian cities and others such as Dubai and Istanbul. Look for flight options from Dubai and elsewhere here:

Visa for Taiwan: Depending on your nationality, you may or may not need a visa to visit Taiwan . Some nationalities can get a visa on arrival, others need to get an e-visa and yet others need to apply in person in their own countries.  Check your visa eligibility and rules here .

Summer escapes: 10 destinations welcoming UAE travellers

From kenyan safaris to beach holidays in europe and indian ocean retreats, there are plenty of options on offer.

Planning a summer holiday is not as straightforward as it used to be, but if you are itching to get away, there are a number of destinations around the world that are currently welcoming travellers from the UAE. Here are 10 summer holiday ideas, with options for travellers who are both vaccinated and unvaccinated.

Cyprus is only a four-hour flight away and Emirates operates five weekly services to the Mediterranean island, making it a great option for shorter, last-minute trips.

The country is perhaps best known for its food and beaches, but is also home to a wealth of archeological sites, charming villages and a mountainous region that will offer much-welcome respite should you wish to fully escape the summer heat. There are currently no movement restrictions on the island, meaning you can enjoy its many attractions freely.

The UAE is categorised as a “red” country by the Cypriot authorities, meaning travellers from the UAE must take one PCR test prior to travel and then a second on arrival at the airport in Cyprus, at a cost of €30 (Dh130). You must then self-isolate until your results come through, which generally takes about a day.

Fully vaccinated travellers from the UAE can travel to Cyprus without having to quarantine or self isolate. The island recognises all vaccines approved by the European Medicines Agency, as well as Sputnik and Sinopharm. All travellers to Cyprus, vaccinated or otherwise, must complete an online Cyprus Flight Pass form within 48 hours of their departure from the UAE.

In spaces where a large number of people might congregate, such as wedding venues, theatres, cinemas, shopping malls and museums, you may be asked to show your Cyprus Flight Pass as part of random checks by authorised officers, so it’s worth keeping either a physical or digital copy on hand at all times. Checks will not take place in more open areas, such as parks, picnic sites, beaches, archaeological sites, theme parks, children’s play areas and outdoor restaurants.

Mdina in Malta. Courtesy David Alfons

At a mere 27 kilometres long, Malta is tiny. But it has been inhabited by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Greeks, Arabs, Normans, French, British and, perhaps most visibly, the Knights of St John, resulting in a rich history that begs to be explored.

Made up of five islands – Malta, Gozo and Comino, plus two uninhabited islets in the Mediterranean Sea – the southern European country lies halfway between Gibraltar and Egypt’s Alexandria.

Its capital, Valletta, may be the smallest national capital in the European Union, but it’s also a Unesco World Heritage Site, and home to museums, 16th-century mansions, fortresses, narrow streets, boutique hotels, bars and restaurants, as well as the Upper Barrakka Gardens, a serene spot overlooking the Grand Harbour.

Malta has reopened to tourists with a traffic-light system in place and is currently on Abu Dhabi’s Green List. The UAE is dubbed amber by Maltese authorities, meaning that travellers can visit if they have a negative PCR test result taken no more than 72 hours before travel. All travellers also need to complete a public health passenger locator form before flying to Malta.

Zanzibar reopened its borders to tourists in May. Courtesy Camilla Frederiksen

A longstanding favourite with UAE travellers, Zanzibar has only grown in popularity since it reopened its borders to tourists in May.

Whether you want to spend your days exploring Stone Town's 19th-century Unesco-listed architecture, while away the hours on a semi-deserted beach, or get up close to nature at the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre or Mnarani Marine Turtles Conservation Pond, this archipelago has much to offer. August is Zanzibar’s driest month, with temperatures reaching about 26ºC, making it a cool escape from the UAE’s summer climes.

All travellers above the age of 5 are required to present a negative PCR test, taken within 72 hours of arrival in Zanzibar. They must also fill in a Traveller’s Surveillance Form before arriving and must hold valid insurance for the entirety of their stay.

If you’re looking for a bargain, The Residence Zanzibar is currently offering 45 per cent off room rates, plus a 25 per cent discount on food and beverages and 50 per cent off spa services. The property consists of 66 stand-alone villas, each with a private swimming pool, and is located 55 minutes from Stone Town.

A travel corridor between the UAE and Serbia means vaccinated travellers can fly between the two countries without having to quarantine, as long as they can show proof from a recognised authority that they have received their final shot of any Covid-19 vaccine.

Unvaccinated travellers can enter the country if they can show a negative PCR test taken within 48 hours of arrival, or a certificate showing that they have recovered from Covid-19 within the past six months.

This landlocked country in the heart of the Balkans remains relatively under the radar, so is ideal for those looking to steer clear of the madding crowds this summer. Temperatures average at around 30ºC in August. Flydubai currently offers daily direct flights to Belgrade with a flying time just under five-and-a-half hours.

Nestled between the Danube and Sava rivers and dubbed the White City, Belgrade is cool but gritty, with an intriguing mix of Socialist-era blocks and art nouveau architecture. Skadarska offers a taste of bohemian Belgrade, with its cobbled streets and galleries, while Savamala has been transformed into the city’s creative hub.

Those looking for a more active holiday can head to the south-east corner of the city, where, in the Avala Mountain and National Park, hiking trails and stunning views abound. Alternatively, take a stroll around Kalemegdan Park, which is set within the walls of a Roman fortress.

Mykonos, the fun-loving island of Greece

When Greece announced it was reopening its borders to tourists on May 14, the country’s tourism minister tweeted: "Greece is offering what people need. Calm and care-free moments on the road towards normality.”

Greece’s sun-drenched beaches, multi-faceted islands and exceptional cuisine will offer all the calm, care-free moments you need this summer, while its myriad historic sites, signature blue-and-white buildings and thriving local fashion scene will also entice.

As a result, Greece will be a no-brainer for many UAE travellers this summer, so expect popular tourist hot spots to be be busy over the coming months. Many visitors will head straight to the country’s islands – from fun-loving Mykonos to low-key Paros or honeymooner-favourite Santorini. Less-visited islands such as Kefalonia, Andros or Antiparos might be a better option for those still keen to avoid crowds. For those opting to stay in Athens, the historic neighbourhoods of Plaka and Monastiraki await, or, for a quieter experience, you can head to the suburbs of Kifisia or Vouliagmeni.

UAE travellers arriving in Greece are required to present either a negative PCR test, taken no more than 72 hours before arrival, or a negative antigen certificate taken no more than 48 hours before arrival. The UAE and Greece have established a travel corridor, meaning fully vaccinated travellers, including those with the Sinopharm vaccine, do not have to present a PCR test, as long as their second jab was taken at least 14 days prior to arrival. Travellers will also not need to quarantine when returning to Abu Dhabi.

All visitors must fill in a Passenger Locator Form at least one day before travelling and may be subject to random testing at the airport.

Flight time from the UAE to Athens is just over five hours. Emirates offers flights from Dubai with fares from Dh2,595; Etihad offers flights from Abu Dhabi for Dh1,768; Aegean Airlines and Wizz Air also fly between the two capitals

Azerbaijan is welcoming tourists from a select number of countries, including the UAE. Visitors must either show proof that they have been fully vaccinated, or present a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of arrival in the country. The country is on Abu Dhabi’s Green List, meaning travellers do not need to quarantine upon their return.

Known as the City of Winds, Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku, is a true amalgamation of old and new and east and west. Its medieval, Unesco-listed old city, known locally as Icherisheher, sits adjacent to the imposing, ultra-modern Flame Towers and the distinctive Zaha Hadid-designed Heydar Aliyev Centre.

Home to twisting alleyways, artists' workshops, traditional markets and authentic restaurants, the old city is encircled by 12th-century walls, while the newer parts of the city offer a delightful blend of Gothic, baroque, neoclassical and art nouveau architecture, as well as grand boulevards lined with designer shops. The city is clean, orderly and extremely pedestrian friendly. With a flight time of less than three hours, this is the perfect spot for a last-minute city break or an impromptu shopping trip with friends.

If you’re looking for a summer holiday that involves staying put in a stunning resort, Mauritius is your best bet. The Indian Ocean island is reopening its borders on July 15, with a two-phased approach. In the initial phase, from July 15 to September 30, it will welcome vaccinated travellers to enjoy holidays within 14 “resort bubbles”.

Guests will have to stay within their resorts, unless they are remaining on the island for longer than 14 days. Those staying for more than two weeks will be able to go out and explore the island after taking a PCR test on day 14 of their holiday.

Even though they must be vaccinated, all visitors must also show a negative PCR test upon arrival in Mauritius, taken between five and seven days before they travel. They will then have to take additional tests on days seven and 14 of their resort holiday, as applicable.

The 14 approved resort bubbles offer something for everyone. Those looking for an intimate, secluded, romantic stay can head to the luxurious Constance Prince Maurice, which is part of The Leading Hotels of the World and designed in accordance with feng shui principles. For a more active affair, Long Beach Mauritius is located on the island’s famed Belle Mare beach and offers diving, kayaking, snorkelling, water skiing, windsurfing, a climbing wall, tennis courts, group fitness classes and a gym. For those looking for a more budget-friendly holiday, the three-star Tropical Attitude and two-star Cocotiers Hotel Mauritius are also on the approved list.

Emirates operates two flights per week to Mauritius. It's a six-and-a-half-hour trip, with prices starting from Dh4,375

The Maldives was one of the first destinations in the world to start welcoming back tourists. Dnata

If you haven’t been vaccinated but an Indian Ocean island retreat appeals, the Maldives is a firm favourite . It was one of the first destinations to reopen to tourists and has so far been very successful in keeping visitors safe.

The archipelago’s “one island, one resort” concept means that social distancing occurs by default, making this an ideal option for people still keen to avoid too much social interaction.

The destination offers countless resorts, at varying price points, but if you want to be a pioneer, head to the Kuda Villingili, which opened in June. Thailand's largest, and arguably most famous island is open for business . Year-round sunshine, endless sandy beaches, the blue waters of the Andaman Sea and top-class Thai cuisine have long made Phuket a much-loved holiday destination.

Head to the southernmost tip of the island, Laem Chao, for breathtaking scenery and sunsets; stroll around old Phuket town to take in the traditional Sino-Portuguese architecture; wander through the Wat Chai Tharam temple; or decamp to one of the beaches on the northern coast, which are typically less crowded than those in the south.

On July 1, the southern Thai province removed all restrictions on fully vaccinated travellers. This applies to all vaccines, including Sinopharm. PCR tests are still compulsory before travelling, and need to be taken no more than 72 hours before departing for Phuket. Visitors will also need to complete subsequent PCR tests on days six and 12 of their holiday.

Travellers must also complete and submit a Certificate of Entry form before they travel. Finally, Covid-19 travel insurance with coverage for at least $100,000 is required, with policies offered by airlines not accepted.

Non-vaccinated travellers from non-red-zone countries, which includes the UAE, can also travel to Phuket, but must stay in a local quarantine hotel for 14 days upon arrival.

Etihad flies to Phuket three times a week, with fares from Dh1,795; Emirates operates four times a week, with fares from Dh1,995. Flying time is six hours and 30 minutes

If a safari has been a longstanding feature on your bucket list, now could be a good time to make that wish come true. UAE travellers, vaccinated or otherwise, are not required to quarantine upon arrival in Kenya. They do need to present a negative Covid-19 test, fill in a passenger locator form before flying and then submit daily health information via the online Jitenge platform. A national curfew is currently in place from 10pm to 4am.

Head to the Masai Mara for safari lodges where social distancing is a given and wildlife experiences are infinitely more enjoyable now that there are fewer crowds. At this time of year, the rolling savannahs are teeming with wildlife, from giraffes and zebras to elephants, lions and cheetahs. Time your trip well and you may even see one of the world’s most spectacular wildlife phenomena – the Great Migration.

If you have a particular penchant for elephants, head to Amboseli National Park in the south of the country, where you’ll get prime wildlife spotting experiences against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak.

If you want to combine your wildlife spotting with a bit of beach time, head to Mombasa or the Unesco-listed Lamu Town, where you can spend hours exploring evocative backstreets that are brimming with Portuguese, Swahili, Omani and Zanzibari influences.

As most schools in the UAE prepare to wrap up the final semester by July 1 for a two-month break, many families are gearing up for summer travel. According to an online marketplace, travellers have begun making plans weeks in advance in anticipation of the upcoming Eid Al Adha holidays , followed by the summer break.

So, where are residents flying to this summer? Based on Wego's data, the most sought-after international destinations for UAE travellers are Egypt, India, Jordan, Morocco, Pakistan, Thailand, Lebanon, Turkey, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.

Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels.

Mamoun Hmedan, chief business officer of Wego, said: "This trend reflects the desire of many travellers to visit their friends and relatives in their home country during the summer. Most of these countries are notably visa-free for GCC nationals.

"With airfares rising during the summer period, it is important to plan and book trips as early as possible to get the best deals."

The travel booking site has observed a jump in summer airfares to almost all these popular destinations compared to the same period early this year. Average flight prices are now 42.72 per cent more expensive for flights to Egypt, up 64.08 per cent to Jordan, and up 32.10 per cent to India.

However, compared to last year’s summer rates, average flight prices are still cheaper. The YoY drop in average airfares to Saudi Arabia, Thailand, and the UAE, for example, range from 18.36 to 27.63 per cent.

According to data, destinations such as Turkey and Thailand have emerged as preferred holiday options, demonstrating travellers' interest in enjoying unique tourist experiences and exploring new cultures.

So, how much will flight tickets cost for UAE residents travelling to these destinations?

Istanbul return flight fares start at Dh651

If you plan to travel to Turkey around the first week of July, you can expect a return flight to Istanbul for a three-week holiday of approximately Dh651 for a direct flight. However, if you wish to travel to Antalya , the cheapest airfare will be Dh1,223. If you want to experience the otherworldly Cappadocia in Central Anatolia, the most affordable flight to Nevsehir will cost you Dh1,299.

Amman return flight fares start at Dh1,179

Renowned for Petra's ancient ruins and the Dead Sea's therapeutic waters, Jordan captivates travellers with its dramatic landscapes and stunning heritage. The cheapest airfare to Amman will cost Dh1,179. But if you fly to Jordan's only coastal city, Aqaba , the cheapest flight will cost you Dh1,612 (with 2 stopovers). Meanwhile, the best deal is available for Dh2,529.

Riyadh return flight fares start at Dh441

Saudi Arabia is home to the holiest places in Islam, and the capital, Riyadh , seamlessly blends ancient traditions with modern development. A return flight from Riyadh starts at Dh441. But if you wish to go to Jeddah — vibrant port city on the Red Sea, known for its historic architecture, bustling souks, and modern skyline — the most affordable flight will cost you around Dh670.

Cairo return flight fares start at Dh1,915

If you plan to travel to Egypt around the first week of July, you can expect a return flight to Cairo from Dubai for a three-week holiday to cost approximately Dh1,915 for a direct flight. However, prioritising the fastest available flight will increase the cost to around Dh2,214. A flight to the Red Sea resort town, Sharm El Sheikh , famed for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and luxurious resorts, will be Dh1,612.

Casablanca return flight fares start at Dh2,274

The best deal to travel to Casablanca around the same time as mentioned above is Dh3,140; the cheapest fare will be around Dh2,274. Travelling to Rabat will be more expensive, with the best deal available for Dh3,830. Marrakech's best deal will cost visitors around Dh2,761.

Bangkok return flight fares start at Dh1,395

Flying out to visit some ornate shrines and vibrant street life in Bangkok ? The best deal will cost you around Dh1,395. However, flying to Phuket will cost you around Dh1,898. To enjoy Chiang Mai 's laid-back vibes, numerous temples and monasteries, UAE travellers will have to shell out around Dh1,772.

Islamabad return flight fares start at Dh1,041

Pakistani expats travelling home for the long summer holidays will spend around Dh1,041 on a flight to Islamabad or Karachi for Dh918. Meanwhile, flying to Lahore will be cheaper than the other two cities and cost residents around Dh870.

Mumbai return flight fares start at Dh1,490

Millions of Indians living in the UAE travel back home during the summer holidays, spending the majority of the two-month vacation in their native regions. So, here are the best deals for some of the most popular destinations.

  • Mumbai: Dh1,490
  • Delhi: Dh1,590
  • Kolkata: Dh2,100
  • Bangaluru: Dh1,880
  • Kochi: Dh1,890

Often called 'Paris of the Middle East', the best deal to Beirut will cost you around Dh1,845.

Djerba return flight fares start at Dh2,430

Exploring Tunisia's sprawling capital comes at a hefty price; the best deal to travel to Tunis is around Dh5,160. If you plan to visit Djerba , an island off the coast of Tunisia, the best deal will be around Dh2,430.

Meanwhile, the UK, Germany, and Italy top the list for European summer destinations. The UK's enduring popularity, especially, may be attributed to the new ETA system that allows GCC citizens to travel to the UK hassle-free.

Mamoun said, "Our data indicates that the summer season and school holidays represent a peak period in travel, as many seek to take advantage of the holiday to meet their loved ones or explore new places.

"We are seeing a significant increase in travel through our platform and recorded over two million searches for flights from the UAE. We expect searches and bookings to increase significantly as the school holidays approach."

*All airfares were checked on June 9 and aggregated using Skyscanner.

The best time to go to Dubai

Mar 16, 2021 • 4 min read

DUBAI, UAE - February 18: Burj Khalifa the tallest building in the world. Dubai Downtown cityscape. Dubai evening skyline, busy roads, sunset on February 18, 2017 in Dubai.

Dubai has warm temperatures year round, and the pleasantly warm winter months are perfect for exploring the city © Umar Shariff / Shutterstock

With its location in the Arabian desert, it's no surprise that Dubai has only two settings on its thermostat: warm and hot. In the months when much of the Northern Hemisphere is shivering, Dubai makes a great getaway for winter sun, but in the sweltering summer months, anyone who is brave enough to stay in the city is hustling between air-conditioned patches of cool.

Here's a month-by-month guide for the best time to visit Dubai .

Editor's note: During COVID-19, please check the latest travel restrictions before planning any trip and always follow government health advice. Events may be subject to change.

High season: November to April

Best time for outdoor urban adventures

Visitors on the viewing platform at the Burj Khalifa, Dubai

When much of the Northern Hemisphere is bundled up in hats and winter coats, Dubai is blossoming. Moderate temperatures bring in major festivals and events, and al fresco dining lasts late into the night. Accommodation rates are high. Outdoor activities and excursions into the desert are best done at this time of year.

Shoulder season: May, September and October

Best time for quiet beach holidays

Boat on a canal through Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai

The days are hot, and the nights are balmy. Because the winter crowds have disappeared, these months are good for quiet beach holidays, with sea temperatures averaging 82°F (28°C). Pleasant temperatures also mean it's still possible to camp in the desert.

Low season: June to August

Best time for budget travelers and indoor shopping

Visitors at the Aquarium in Dubai Mall

During the hot and humid summer months, travelers on a budget can more easily book into Dubai five-star's accommodations thanks to steep discounts. Life moves indoors, and summer sales lure shoppers into the air-conditioned malls.

Month-by-month breakdown

Here's a monthly guide to what you can expect through the year in Dubai. All events are subject to change.

January is a blissful month in Dubai. When much of the rest of the world is suffering post-festive season doldrums and icy conditions, the daytime temperatures in Dubai average a pleasant 77°F (25°C). January is still Dubai's coldest month, so bring a light jacket for evenings out. Key events:  Dubai Shopping Festival, Dubai Marathon

February in Dubai is another warm and winning month, with sun-kissed weather and plenty going on, including many outdoor events. Pack a pashmina for al fresco evenings. Key events:  Dubai Jazz Festival, Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, Dubai Food Festival

Dubai's weather in March might be heating up a fraction, but it is still near perfect in this action-packed month, with warm seas for swimming and enough of space on the sand. Key events:  Festival of Literature, Art Dubai, Sikka Art Fair, Taste of Dubai, Dubai World Cup, Middle East Film and Comic Con, Burj Al Arab Swim, Dubai International Boat Show

The spring weather in Dubai is still warm rather than blistering, but school breaks mean you’ll see more tourists around the Easter holiday. April is a rollicking good month for beach fans and fashionistas. Key events: Fashion Forward, Al Marmoom Heritage Festival, start of Ramadan in 2021 and 2022

In May, temperatures in Dubai can nudge 95°C (35°C) or more, and most visitors have cleared out in anticipation of the summer heat wave. Beach clubs and indoor shopping centers provide welcome relief during the day.  Key events: Al Gaffal Dhow Race

Summer has arrived, and it's already blisteringly hot outside. Life shifts indoors to air-conditioned malls and museums, and swimming in the sea or a hotel pool feels like sitting in a bathtub. Key events: Dubai Summer Surprises

July is the hottest month of the year in Dubai, and it's a scorcher, with average temperatures of 105°F (40°C). Flight prices and hotel rates drop significantly. You can really cool down at the city's snowy indoor slope, Ski Dubai . Key events:  Eid Al Adha in 2021 and 2022

Dubai is still roasting hot in August. Tourist attractions are generally empty, especially toward the end of the month when schools start up again.

Dubai's searing summer temperatures are slowly starting to drop, and it's a good time to be by the sea. Excursions into the desert are possible again, and the balmy evenings lend themselves to stargazing among the sands.

Temperatures in Dubai have started to cool nicely, although you can still expect humidity and toasty warm days in early October. The cooler nights are lovely for a stroll along the Dubai Canal and for dining outdoors. Key events:  Diwali in 2022

By November, the summer heat has subsided, and visitors from colder climes are returning to enjoy the balmy temperatures. Much of life moves outdoors. Key events: Diwali in 2021, Dubai Rugby Sevens, DP World Tour Championship, Global Village

The end of the year marks the beginning of the peak tourist season for a reason: the sea is still warm, the air is crisp and clear, and evenings are warm enough for outdoor dining. Key events:  UAE National Day, Dubai International Film Festival

Gambling has long been taboo in Islamic countries. Now, analysts see UAE as the next Vegas

Howard Stutz

The United Arab Emirates, a country where almost three-quarters of its population adheres to Islam — a religion that considers gambling a harmful activity — could one day surpass Las Vegas as one of the world’s most lucrative casino markets.

Despite a gaming ban throughout the Middle East, UAE is creating a gaming regulatory system allowing each of its seven emirates to have at least one integrated resort — a property that includes a casino, hotel rooms, restaurants, entertainment and non-gaming attractions.

One development is already under construction. Wynn Resorts is building a $3.9 billion integrated resort, first announced in 2022 , on the man-made Al Marjan Island in Ras Al Khaimah. At least two other emirates — Dubai and Abu Dhabi — are targeted for a casino resort.

Those three properties alone, according to gaming advisory firm CBRE Institutional Research, could produce as much as $8.6 billion in annual gaming revenue. That’s more than the $8.4 billion in gaming revenue produced in 2023 by the 25 properties that make up a major portion of the Las Vegas Strip, according to Gaming Control Board Senior Economic Analyst Michael Lawton.

“We believe the UAE represents one of the most compelling opportunities in global gaming,” CBRE analysts John DeCree and Colin Mansfield wrote in a research report last week. They led a team of CBRE analysts during a weeklong visit to the UAE in early May to gain an understanding of the market.

As with other international gaming jurisdictions, Mansfield said casinos in the UAE would create an untapped market of high-end Middle Eastern customers, providing Strip resorts with another visitor base to populate their ultra-luxury gaming lounges, restaurants and other attractions.

“[The UAE] is a way to expand your brand's global reach with a new market that’s potentially never seen or visited Las Vegas,” Mansfield said in an interview with The Nevada Independent . “We like the financial aspect of diversifying cash flows.”

DeCree said the UAE, given the luxury hotels and restaurants that already populate Abu Dhabi and Dubai, could eventually have a character similar to Las Vegas, which has become dominated by non-gaming spending that often reaches 65 percent of the total revenue stream.

“I think it is reasonable to expect the UAE will be the Las Vegas of the Middle East,” DeCree said.

The UAE already has an existing tourism industry with some 200,000 hotel rooms. DeCree said the emirates offer “a high propensity for luxury and consumer spending, a business-friendly operating environment, strong existing transportation and lodging infrastructure, and virtually no gaming competition.”

DeCree said he expects the market to have some similarities to Singapore, which has two integrated resorts operated by Las Vegas Sands and Malaysia-based Genting Group in which 40 percent of the revenue comes from non-gaming activities.

Combined, Singapore's two casinos accounted for $3.4 billion in gaming revenue in 2023.

The first step in the process will be for the UAE to end its ban on gaming. The analysts expect a regulated casino market would follow a similar roadmap the UAE took in relaxing rules in 2020 that previously prohibited activities such as alcohol consumption by non-Muslims.

Gaming would be decriminalized through a federal decree or legislative changes to the criminal and penal code.

“We anticipate these legislative changes to be forthcoming in the next few months,” CBRE wrote, suggesting the action in the region that is often shrouded in mystery may have been already signed but not published. “We wouldn’t necessarily expect a very public announcement.”

UAE’s regulatory structure is still a work in progress some 10 months after the General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA) was established with former MGM Resorts chairman and CEO Jim Murren overseeing the agency’s board and former Missouri gaming regulator Kevin Mullally as CEO.

Murren told The Nevada Independent last fall he could not comment about the process and Mansfield said CBRE couldn’t disclose who they met with in the UAE. In the report, the analysts wrote, “We foresee an operator-friendly framework” for the GCGRA.

“Everyone had been publicly restrained [from commenting] and we’ve been following [UAE] media, which fueled our thesis around what we think the regulatory structure could look like,” Mansfield said.

Kicking the tires

Most of the major international gaming operators are already exploring the UAE’s potential, hoping to land one of the potential integrated resort licenses.

“Everyone is going to kick the tires,” Mansfield said. “The UAE is a compelling opportunity.”

Wynn is beyond the tire-kicking stage. A planned 1,000-foot-tall hotel tower is already rising above the shoreline next to the Arabian Sea. The future casino will encompass just 4 percent of the property’s overall footprint of 5.6 million square feet.

Wynn Al Marjan will have 1,542 hotel rooms and suites and 22 high-priced villas with beachfront access, 22 restaurants and lounges and retail and meeting spaces.

“Wynn Al Marjan Island should generate strong returns, high property margins, and a greater non-gaming mix than Macau and even potentially Singapore integrated resorts,” CBRE wrote.

Wynn was “handpicked” by the Ras Al Khaimah emirate to develop and operate the resort. However, the regulatory framework the emirate created has now been superseded by the GCGRA.

“Although some investors remain cautious on the licensing process, we would argue that Wynn Al Marjan Island is too big, or too important, to fail,” CBRE wrote in the report. “Since the Wynn project was announced in 2022, the broader Al Marjan Island master plan accelerated, attracting significant investment to the region.”

Among the companies CBRE suggested would have an interest in the UAE are Las Vegas Sands, Hong Kong-based Galaxy Entertainment and Melco Resorts, Genting Group and Florida-based Hard Rock International.

MGM Resorts International is already in Dubai, partnering with Wasl Asset Management Group on a 25-acre non-gaming resort development on Jumeirah Beach, one of the emirate’s man-made islands. The $1.2 billion project includes three hotel towers totaling 1,500 rooms and will be branded under the Aria, MGM Grand and Bellagio names.

MGM Resorts CEO Bill Hornbuckle said last September that a 150,000-square-foot space is being created on the site for one of two amenities — either a casino or retail center. He said MGM’s involvement in the project happened long before gaming discussions ever began.

“The UAE is a fascinating opportunity,” Hornbuckle said.

In the report, DeCree and Mansfield wrote the island would be one of the stronger locations for gaming, given the neighborhood includes the Burj Al Arab Hotel , which was designed to resemble a sailboat; Dubai International Financial Center and the Palm Jumeirah man-made island.

CBRE predicted a single gaming license in Dubai could produce more than $2.8 billion in gaming revenue.

“We suspect Dubai could support two [gaming licenses] that could potentially rival Singapore given the amount of visitation, tourism, wealth, and population,” the analysts wrote.

Caesars Entertainment has taken itself out of the UAE market. In November, the company ended its affiliation with a non-gaming hotel and resort in Dubai that began in 2018.

After selling its stake in a potential South Korean venture in 2023, Caesars CEO Tom Reeg said the company was no longer interested in international casino operations beyond its Caesars-branded hotel-casino in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, where tourism is already a strong focus, is the unspoken-for location being touted by the analysts in the report.

The 15-square-mile island includes several theme parks, including SeaWorld and Warner Bros. World, an 18,000-seat sports arena, a race course for the FormulaOne Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, a 2.5 million-square-foot retail mall and a waterfront development with more than 20 food and beverage outlets.

Although MGM Resorts has expressed some interest, “There is no clear front runner for an integrated resort operator in Abu Dhabi, should the emirate move forward with licensing,” the analysts wrote. “We suspect just about any other global [integrated resort] operator could be interested given the potential size of the opportunity.”

First roll of the dice

DeCree said the UAE is moving faster toward implementing and developing a gaming market than any other nation.

He cited Japan as an example where casinos were discussed in the early 2010s as a way of using the tax revenue to fund the infrastructure needed for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo.

However, long before the pandemic pushed the Olympics into 2021, most of the major U.S. gaming operators departed the bidding process.

Nearly two decades after the process began, MGM Resorts plans to open Japan’s first casino resort — a $10 billion project in Osaka — in 2030. If the Wynn Al Marjan remains on schedule for a 2027 opening, the UAE could have the Middle East’s first gaming development three years ahead of Japan.

“We looked at some other jurisdictions, and it takes a very long time to go from studying gaming to debating what the regulatory structure should look like, to licensing, implementation and execution,” DeCree said.

The analysts experienced how quickly the UAE is evolving.

“We've seen a country that is very focused on investing and maintaining its leadership position in global tourism and as a financial hub,” DeCree said.”

In Europe's Schengen area , your passport must be valid for at least six months at the time of your entry. At present, the Schengen area includes most European Union (EU) countries, except for Cyprus and Ireland.

If you are transiting through Canada or the United Kingdom (UK) enroute to the Schengen area : your passport must be valid for at least six months, even though Canada and the UK do not themselves have the six-month rule. If your passport will expire within six months, airlines may not let you board your onward flight to Europe.

Traveling in Europe

If you plan to travel in Europe, you need to know about the Schengen Borders Agreement, which allows you to move freely within a number of countries without border checks. Tourists, exchange students, and people visiting for business from certain countries, like the United States, can travel in the Schengen area for up to 90 days. The Schengen area includes most EU countries, except for Cyprus and Ireland. It also includes four non-EU countries: Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.

Before you travel to the Schengen area, we recommend you do the following:

  • Check the expiration date on your passport book carefully before traveling to Europe. Ensure your passport book is valid for at least six months when you enter the Schengen area. This is especially important for minors under age 16 as their passports are only valid for five years. In contrast, U.S. citizen adults aged 16 and older receive passports that are valid for 10 years.
  • Always carry your passport book with you when traveling to another country in the Schengen area. Even if there is no border check at that time, officials may reinstate border controls without notice.
  • Be prepared to explain your purpose of travel.
  • Be prepared to provide proof of sufficient financial resources for the visit.
  • Comply with other entry requirements for each country you will visit or transit.

On our Country Information pages , you can find passport validity requirements and other important information for your destination country. If your passport does not meet the Schengen requirements, you may be:

  • Refused boarding by the airline at your point of origin or while transferring planes.
  • Denied entry when you arrive in the Schengen area, regardless of how long you will stay.

An immigration official will determine if you qualify for visa-free entry to the Schengen area when you first cross any external Schengen border. You will have to present your passport at that time. The officer may deny your entry if you do not qualify.

You should also check passport validity requirements if traveling onward from the Schengen area to a country outside the Schengen area. You can find this information in our Country Information pages.

HOW LONG CAN I REMAIN?

  • With a valid U.S. passport book, you can stay up to 90 days in the Schengen area for tourism or business during any 180-day period. You must wait an additional 90 days before applying to re-enter the Schengen area.
  • If you plan to stay in the Schengen area longer than three months, contact the embassy of the country where you plan to spend the majority of your time and apply for a visa.

Countries in the Schengen area may reinstate temporary internal or external border control without notice. U.S. citizens should carry their U.S. passport book at all times when entering or leaving the Schengen area. They should also bring it when traveling between Schengen countries.

How can the U.S. government help me if border officials do not let me enter?

  • We can give you the contact information of foreign embassies of the countries you wish to visit.
  • We can provide information about hiring an English-speaking foreign attorney overseas if you choose to do so.
  • Note: We cannot influence a foreign government’s decision about allowing you to enter. We cannot intervene in another country’s criminal or administrative procedures.
