A trip odometer is a useful feature found alongside the main odometer on a vehicle’s dashboard. It provides additional information to the driver by tracking the distance covered during individual trips.

Unlike the main odometer, which logs the total mileage the vehicle has accumulated over its lifetime, a trip odometer can be reset. This allows drivers to measure the distance of specific journeys, monitor fuel consumption for precise distances, or gauge travel time for regular routes without affecting the permanent record of total miles traveled by the vehicle.

We can reset the trip odometer before starting a new journey to ensure accurate distance tracking for that particular trip.

Many modern vehicles come with digital odometers, which include one or more trip meters providing an easy-to-read display.

The advantage of having this information readily available helps us manage our driving patterns, plan for maintenance, and keep tabs on vehicle performance.

Trip Odometer: A Detailed Dive

Odometers have been central to how we understand vehicle usage. They track the total distance a vehicle has traveled, transitioning from mechanical gears to crisp digital displays.

Evolution from Mechanical to Digital

Initially, odometers were mechanical devices, consisting of a series of gears connected to the vehicle’s transmission. As the car moved, the rotation of the wheels turned the gears, advancing the odometer’s display to reflect the distance traveled.

Their durability meant they could last the lifetime of the vehicle, but they were not without drawbacks. Precise calibration was essential to ensure accuracy, and physical wear could eventually lead to inaccuracy or failure.

In recent years, digital odometers have largely replaced mechanical ones. They work by receiving electronic signals from a sensor, usually located in the vehicle’s transmission.

A trip odometer , specifically, allows us to measure the distance for individual journeys. Located within the instrument cluster, it operates similarly to the main odometer but can be reset to zero, providing separate tracking for the distance of specific trips.

This function is valuable for mileage tracking for business travel, monitoring fuel efficiency, or even just noting the length of a road trip.

A speedometer , by contrast, informs us how fast the vehicle is moving at any given moment, which, although related to distance measurement, serves a separate role in the vehicle’s suite of instrumentation.

The Role of Odometers in Vehicle Maintenance

Odometers serve as vital tools for monitoring vehicle health and scheduling maintenance. They provide essential data that allow us to keep our vehicles running efficiently.

Tracking Mileage for Service Intervals

• Engine Oil : Replace approximately every 5,000 miles
• Air Filter : Replace around 15,000 to 30,000 miles
• Transmission Fluid : Change every 30,000 to 60,000 miles

Fuel Economy and Efficiency

How To Use Trip Meter In Car? Most Helpful Scenarios

From gas mileage to engine oil replacement intervals, we all have those moments when we suddenly realize the value and importance of our trip meters. While it's located right in front of the dash, most drivers just can't get around how the trip meter works, especially when dealing with an unfamiliar vehicle brand/model. However, it's never that difficult.

To use a trip meter, you have to navigate to the Trip menu using the button(s) on the steering wheel or trip computer panel. You can also use the appropriate reset button to reset trip values before or after any trip. There are slight changes across different models, but it's all the same basic principle.

Most cars usually have more than one trip meter. For instance, you may notice your car has two trip meters labeled "Trip A" and "Trip B." 

In any case, the working principle is the same. The only thing is that they function independently of each other. 

In other words, Trip A and B allow you to keep two different mileage logs simultaneously. Most car owners use the Trip A meter to measure shorter mileage, while Trip B records longer distances. 

But whichever case, how you use a trip meter (A or B) is all up to you. The main thing is knowing how to use this car component, so you can reset it when due. 

How To Change The Display On A Trip Computer

Generally, regardless of what car you drive, you can switch between displays by pressing the button controls on your steering wheel. However, some brands, like Toyota, may have a button on the lower part of the odometer screen, which you can use to swap between displays. 

Trip Meter Vs. Odometer

Most times, trip meters get confused with odometers. While these two pretty much do the same thing, they're not exactly the same. 

An odometer measures the total distance covered by a car ever since it started being used. A trip meter, on the other hand, only measures the distance covered per trip or the total distance covered since the last reset date. Most cars have trip meters built into the odometer screen. 

While you can reset trip meters before or after trips, you can't do the same to an odometer. In fact, it's actually illegal to reset Odometers in some countries, as it shows the total mileage of the car. 

Benefits Of Using A Trip Meter

• Easy Mileage Calculation

The most significant benefit of trip meters is that they save the driver the trouble of calculating the mileage for any particular trip. You see, before now, cars only employed odometers. So, if you wanted to get your mileage from a trip, you'd have to subtract the mileage at the end of the trip from the initial mileage reading. 

This method of calculating mileage, of course, wasn't very efficient or convenient. Drivers often forgot their initial mileage readings, making the entire attempt futile. 

With trip meters, however, you don't need to cram values in your head for every trip. All you have to do is reset the meter before you start the journey-the reading you get at the end of the trip is the mileage for that particular trip. 

• Fuel Consumption Monitoring

One of the greatest benefits of the trip meter is that it helps you keep an eye on your car's fuel consumption rate. Let's say your car consumes a gallon of fuel every ten miles. In a scenario where you've consumed a gallon of gasoline, and yet, your trip meter tells you that your car has driven only 7 miles, you can be sure something is wrong. 

In modern vehicles, the odometer screen can equally give you a direct value of the fuel consumption rate, so you don't have to compare values yourself. 

• Easy Reminders For Maintenance Jobs

Several car routine maintenance practices depend on the total miles driven. Car batteries typically last for 30,000 to 50,000 miles on average, and engine oils need replacement for every 3,000 miles. 

You can always use your trip meter to keep a watchful eye on your mileage and then carry out the maintenance once the target value is approaching. Trip meters are also very important for gauging the lifespan of certain car components, like tires. 

For instance, let's say you install a new set of tires, and it's only expected to last for 5000 miles. You can reset your trip meter from the date the tire was installed. As you keep using your car, you can easily tell by your trip meter when you're close to the 5000 miles mark. 

How To Use/Reset A Trip Meter-Typical Scenarios For Different Vehicles 

Depending on the brand and model of your vehicle, there may be slight variations in how your odometer or trip meter works. Let's take a look at some popular vehicle brands and how it's done in these vehicles. At least, you can take a clue from here. 

How To Use Trip Meter In Toyota Vehicles

In Toyota Vehicles, you won't easily find menu buttons on the steering wheel that control the trip meter. Rather, there will be a button on the lower right side of the instrument panel for this function. 

For most Toyota cars, pressing this button once will display "Trip A," and pressing it a second time will display "Trip B." To reset any of these trips, simply make sure it is the one showing presently on the display, and then press and hold the button. The values should return to zero after a few seconds. 

For models like Toyota Corolla, you can change or switch displays by pressing the stem at the lower left corner of the instrument cluster. Resetting your trip meter simply entails pressing and holding this stem until the values change to zero. 

How To Use Trip Meter In Ford Vehicles

To Use the trip computer in Ford vehicles, you must use the 5-way controls on the steering wheel. You'll find buttons like down, up, left, right, and OK: use these to navigate to the trip menu. 

Note that Ford vehicles (just like Toyota) usually have multiple options, so be careful which you select. Here are the menu options you'll find in most Ford vehicles:

• Average Fuel: Shows average fuel consumption rate per trip.
• Trip timer: Records how long a particular trip takes. The timer starts automatically when you turn on your vehicle and stops when you turn it off.
• Outside Temperature: shows the temperature outside of your car.
• Trip Odometer: Records distance traveled per trip
• Digital Odometer: Records total distance traveled by car.
• Distance to Empty: Shows the estimated distance your car can travel before the gasoline runs out.
• All values: Displays all the above-mentioned variables on one screen.

Suppose you wish to reset the trip odometer, press and hold the OK button until a status bar loads up. Once the bar fills up completely, the trip meter will be reset. 

In Ford vehicles, you also have the option to reset the entire trip computer. To do this, go to the "All Values" screen and press and hold OK until the values reset to zero. 

How To Use Trip Meter In Chevrolet Vehicles

For older models, you'll have to repeatedly press the menu button until you see a "trip/fuel" menu shown on the screen. Now, press the down arrow button to toggle between "Trip 1" and "Trip 2."

If you wish to reset any of the trip meters, simply press and hold the "set/clr" button for a few seconds until you see the mileage change to zero. Note that in some models like Chevy Cruze, there'll be a thumbwheel to use in selecting options (scrolling up or down)

For newer Chevy models, you'll usually find "left" and "right" arrow buttons on the steering wheel that allow you to scroll between menu items. Use this button to scroll through the menu list until you see "Trip 1" or "Trip 2" displayed. If you wish to reset any of these, use the checkmark "?" button on the steering wheel.

How To Use Trip Computer In Mercedes

For Mercedes cars (modern ones, of course), they employ a tiny touchpad instead of regular steering buttons. This touchpad is usually located on the left or right wing of the steering wheel, close to other buttons. 

To control the trip computer or toggle between displays, you simply swipe the touchpad left or right with your finger. To reset the trip meter, first, ensure you are on the trip display menu. Next, click the touchpad button. 

A message will pop up on your screen asking if you want to reset the meter. Click the "yes" option, and you're done. It's important to note that most Mercedes cars have automatic reset timers, and you also have the option of resetting your trip meter from a particular date or time. 

Typical additional features in a Mercedes instrument cluster include current speed, current consumption rate, Eco display, etc. 

Making the most use of your trip meter will save you the trouble of unexpected breakdowns and also keep you up-to-date with preventive maintenance. Some cars give you more liberty to manipulate trip meters than others. However, as you can see from this article, the basic principle of using/resetting a trip meter doesn't really change. 

Note that the instructions for the brands above are generic, and slight differences may be noticed across different car models. It's always best to consult your user manual for specific instructions.

RALLY EXPLAINER - Choosing a Tripmeter

What is a Tripmeter?

The ability to measure traveled distance accurately, and correlate it with distances in a roadbook is at the heart of Rally Navigation.

A tripmeter at its most basic is simply an adjustable, highly accurate odometer. More advanced features can include measuring speed, providing compass headings for HP/OP sections, providing a clock, stage timer, hour meter for maintenance scheduling, and displaying waypoint information.

How do they work?

There are two main types of tripmeters:

• Wheel Sensor Driven

Wheel sensor tripmeters rely on a micro switch sensor usually placed near a front wheel hub that is triggered by a magnet usually located on a brake rotor. As the magnet passes over the sensor with each revolution of the wheel, a pulse is registered by the tripmeter. This pulse is multiplied by the conversion factor programmed into the tripmeter, and a distance is displayed to the racer. Wheel sensor tripmeters require very little electricity to operate, and can operate for periods without external power. Wheel sensor tripmeters are usually less expensive.

GPS driven tripmeters rely on a GPS antenna to provide course data to the tripmeter. In additional to displaying speed and odometer, GPS driven tripmeters can provide additional functionality like compass (CAP) headings. GPS driven tripmeters do not require the install and routing of a wheel sensor, but will not function without external power. NOTE: Some events such as Dakar or Rebelle restrict the use of GPS devices.

An in-depth discussion of the effective accuracy difference between GPS and Wheel Sensor is here , but for nearly all Rally purposes, we can consider the accuracy between the two to be equal. Nearly all of the (very rare) Tripmeter failures we see are related to cable damage. Both GPS and Wheel Sensor units can be equally reliable with careful install and cable protection.

ICO or RNS?

Since its release in 2017, the ICO MAX series has become the world standard. It’s rare to see a Dakar bike without at least one ICO MAX-2 (Wheel Sensor). The MAX series has a composite case and 25x65mm “Seven Segment” LCD screen (Similar to a digital clock) with bright orange backlight. The MAX-G has an external cabled GPS Antenna. The ICOs are designed and built in the USA.

The ICO MAX-2 (Wheel Sensor) is $350USD

The ICO MAX-G (GPS) is $450USD

The RNS GFX series was released in 2020 and is the next generation of Rally Tripmeters. The GFX series has an anodized billet aluminum case, and 35x60mm Transflective HD Graphics 172ppi LCD screen (Similar resolution to a tablet or laptop screen) with a bright blue backlight. This screen allows for the display of multiple data at once, and full text menus.  The Pro model has an internal GPS for durability and simplicity. It also has the capability to connect to an external GPS device to display hidden waypoint arrows similar to an ERTF or RallyComp, which is great for realistic training. The RNS GFX Series is designed and manufactured in Germany.

How do I use the trip computer in my Ford?

The trip computer in your vehicle keeps track of the time and distance you have traveled. The trip computer has several menu options that you can access by using the five-way controls on your steering wheel. Press down, up, left, or OK to scroll through the options, which include: 

• Distance to Empty: Indicates the approximate distance your vehicle can travel before running out of fuel. 
• Trip Odometer: Registers the distance you have traveled on an individual trip.
• Trip Timer: Keeps track of how long each trip takes. The timer stops when you turn your vehicle off and restarts when you restart your vehicle.
• Average Fuel: Shows the average fuel economy for a given trip.
• Outside Temperature: Shows the outside air temperature.
• Digital Odometer: Tracks the overall distance you have traveled.
• All Values: Shows the Distance to Empty, Trip Odometer, Trip Timer, and Average Fuel. 

Using Your Trip Computer

Setting your trip odometer to track an individual trip.

• Scroll to either the Trip Odometer, Trip Timer, or Average Fuel screen using the five-way steering wheel controls.
• Press and hold the OK button until you see the status bar loading. When the status bar fills in all the way, your computer will be reset.

Resetting All Trip Computers

• Scroll to the All Values screen using the five-way steering wheel controls.
• Press and hold OK until you see that the computer is reset to zero.

The instrument cluster of a car contains several important instruments that give drivers important information. Three such instruments are the speedometer, odometer, and trip meter. Many car owners don’t know the difference between these components, and if you are one of such drivers, you’ve come to the right place.

Speedometers track how fast a car is moving, odometer tracks the total distance traveled by car, while trip meters measure distance traveled between trips. The information provided by these three instruments is of great value to car owners.

Odometers, speedometers, and trip meters are usually located on the dashboard or instrument cluster where a driver can take a quick glance at them without losing concentration. Anyone who has ever driven a car is bound to be familiar with the speedometer and odometer. The trip meter is likely the one most people are less familiar with.

However, we’ll be discussing all three instruments and the differences between them for educational purposes. So, continue reading to learn more about these important instruments.

Understanding The Odometer, The Mileage Tracker

An odometer tracks mileage which is the total distance traveled by car. Designed to be non-resettable, an odometer will track mileage through the vehicle’s lifetime.

There are several important reasons for tracking the mileage of a car, and one of such reasons is to know the level of work the engine has been subjected to. And this is usually considered when buying a used car. A 5-year-old vehicle with 5,000 mileage will be considered better than a 2-year-old car with 10,000 mileage.

It’s a crime to tamper with the odometer of a car, something that happens as people reduce the readings on the odometer to increase the value of the car. It’s more difficult to tamper with digital odometers than mechanical odometers which are typically found in older cars.

A car’s mileage can also be used to track fuel economy, which is the rate at which the vehicle consumes fuel. Also, mileage can be used for maintenance practices such as oil changes or servicing the engine.

Your car insurance may also require you to track mileage, especially if you are using a mileage-based car insurance plan. Doing this allows you to know when to get a top-up or when to drive less to avoid exceeding the current limit of your plan.

Odometers can be digital or mechanical. Mechanical odometers are something of a dying breed as modern cars now favor digital odometers, which use an optical or magical sensor connected to the transmission of a car to calculate mileage. For mechanical odometers, mileage is calculated by an output shaft attached to the transmission.

Understanding The Speedometer – The Instrument That Measures Speed

The speedometer is designed for only one purpose, and that is to measure the speed a car is traveling at. The speedometer starts reading the moment the car is in motion and goes back to zero when the car comes to a complete stop. So, unless the car is moving, the speedometer reading will always be at zero.

Without speedometers, drivers would have no idea of how fast they are moving. So, a speedometer allows drivers to know their current speed to allow them to drive safely to avoid accidents. Also, speedometers allow drivers to travel within speed limits. If you go above the speed limit, you may be flagged down by an officer of the law and receive a warning if you are really lucky. If Lady Luck isn’t smiling at you, you may be charged and fined.

Understanding The Trip Meter

The trip meter, also called the trip odometer, is an instrument some drivers may not be familiar with, especially those that drive older cars. Modern cars generally have trip meters because of how easy it is to incorporate them since they are usually digitized.

The function of a trip meter is to record distance making it similar to an odometer. However, the trip meter is resettable. You can always reset the trip meter back to zero whenever you want.

Some cars tend to come with two independent trip meters, which are usually designated Trip A and Trip B. Having two independent and resettable trip meters is advantageous to drivers as they can use the two meters for different purposes.

For example, Trip A can be used to monitor the total distance traveled in a day or in a week. At the end of the day or week, the trip meter can then be reset after taking note of the distance traveled. Trip B, on the other hand, can be used for other purposes, such as tracking the total distance traveled between fuel refills. This can give drivers insight into how far they can travel on a full tank, half tank, or a particular amount of fuel. Drivers will know whenever there’s a change in the rate at which the engine is consuming fuel or if the fuel obtained from a different source is of lower or higher quality.

As discussed above, the difference between these three instruments is their function. Below is a table to simplify the differences.

TRIP Odometer

I have a 2014 Tri Glide and I thought I knew a lot about it. BUT Guess that's all wrong:whiteflag. I can't for the life of me figure where it's at and how to set it ? Can someone shed some light on this for me ? Thanks  

Rick, the only places I have seen reset or select switches on these is on the faring next to the speedometer (around the 7 o'clock pos.) or on the side of the trim panel on top of the gas tank. Should be something about it in the owner's manual.  

If its anything like my 2014 Limited, there is a switch on the front side (not facing you while seated) of the left switch assembly. Easy reach with your left index finger and each press scrolls thru total miles, trip A, trip B, miles to empty, then back to total miles. At least by my memory and on my bike. Hope this helps.  

Thanks guys I found it. It's on TOP of the left handle Bar right on top of it. All you have to do is with your left index finger is push it down to reset it.Gives you 2 choices. You guys are great Thanks again. Now I really feel stupied :wink  

Yep. 2014 reset button is on the left switch housing. Has a circle looking symbol on the button.  

On the top of you handle bars on the left side.

Press & hold down the switch on the top of the left handle bar switch. This resets the trip odometer.  

i have a 2017 harley davison raod glide with a aftermarket radio and my miles are km how can i change it back too miles  

I looked and foy=und this hope it helps With the Odometer displayed ,press and hold the trigger switch, until it changes from miles to kilometers . The trigger button is on your left control module. The button that shows gas range , mileage and trip Should be the same way to change it to miles Quad Lock (youtube.com) a video of it

For the current trip, you can display distance, duration and average energy usage. You can also show distance and total and average energy used since your last charge and for additional trips.

To name or rename a trip, touch the trip's name, enter a new name for the trip, then press Save . To reset a particular trip meter, touch its associated Reset button.

To display the odometer, do either of the following:

I am just wondering how common a problem is this ? Anyone else experiencing this ?

I have to say these drivers are a really bad indicitment on Thailand. From the moment we have arrived at the airport they have just been a pain to deal with. We were told at the airport about having to pay toll and meter use. However, when we arrived at our destination in Sukhumvit the driver wanted 2000 baht. He showed a picture on some monitor of a price, but this was not a meter.

It’s a common issue.

Always agree to use the meter before getting in the taxi, or use an app like Grab that’ll have a set price for the journey.

And whatever you do NEVER take a tuktuk ride or agree to tour a gem store or place selling silk.

Thailand is chockablocka with fraudsters both local and farang. Caveat emptor!

We use Grab app, then we know the price ahead of the trip. Carry small notes as don't expect change.

Real common.

Dudes even pour water in the passenger footwell and say you did it and want to charge you an extra 100 to clear up. Jokers.

Use Grab or Bolt and for a rough calculation expect to pay 50 baht for the first km and 10 baht for every subsequent one.

Taxi drivers understand meter krab or ka if you are female. If they dont put on the meter get out and dont put any luggage in the boot/trunk until they agree on the meter if you are Appless

Gov. Phil Murphy will head to Silicon Valley and Hollywood in California this weekend in a bid to pitch New Jersey’s film and high tech sectors — especially artificial intelligence — to businesses out west. 

On Thursday, Murphy addressed an artificial intelligence summit hosted at Princeton University — a sector he’s referred to as a “moonshot” industry in the Garden State.

“We’re coming together to think ahead about one of the most positive and promising and potentially disruptive developments in human history,” the governor said Thursday afternoon. 

New Jersey, Murphy continued during his keynote address, is “perfectly positioned to lead the way in harnessing generative AI to address some of our world’s greatest challenges.” 

Murphy’s economic mission will run April 14 to 17, according to business magazine ROI-NJ . It will feature the first lady, Tammy Murphy, as well as Tim Sullivan, head of the state Economic Development Authority, and Wesley Matthews, head of Choose NJ, a nonprofit started by former Gov. Chris Christie to pay for the governor’s economic missions . 

Choose NJ spokesperson Ingrid Austin said the trip will take Murphy and his entourage through Silicon Valley in the San Francisco Bay area and Hollywood in Los Angeles, and that the nonprofit will pay for this trip.

“While industries like filmmaking and technology have long found a home on the West Coast, the truth is today, there is a whole new world of opportunity opening up right here in the Garden State,” Murphy, a Democrat, said last month in Atlantic City . 

What is AI? What's it used for?

AI, and more specifically generative AI, is a technology that processes data from the internet like a human brain to create content — text, pictures, video, music — based on users' instructions. 

Its emergence has meant that suddenly people who weren't computer scientists and didn't know how to write code could get their computer to perform tasks in seconds that would have take them minutes, hours or days to do in the past: respond to emails, write marketing brochures, design a magazine cover.

Technological applications in AI could range from fusion control to the power grid, chip design, home assistants and surgery, said Mengdi Wang, an associate professor at Princeton University’s Center for Statistics and Machine Learning.

Generative AI could be used for more mundane tasks that could otherwise take hours or days, and data searching becomes easier. 

At the forefront was OpenAi , a company based in San Francisco that was founded in 2015 to create a generative AI platform available to the public.

Its financial backers have included Elon Musk, Amazon and Microsoft. And it has rolled out ChatGPT, which generates text, and DALL-E , which generates digital images, with new versions providing increasingly human-like responses.

A recent report by the Pew Research Center found that 23% of American adults have used AI chatbot ChatGPT, up from 18% last July. 

“It’s like a Wild West,” said Aaron Price, chief executive officer of Tech United, a trade group for New Jersey’s high-tech industry. “Parts of the technology are very mature, parts of the technology are immature.” 

Comes with major downsides, needs 'guardrails'

The technology comes with massive downsides.

The federal Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency warned that ahead of the 2024 elections , generative AI could be used by foreign adversaries, cybercriminals and any member of the public to depict political figures in compromising positions or saying controversial statements that they didn’t actually make. 

USA TODAY reported on the prevalence of AI-generated nude images of famous and non-famous people alike. Graphic images generated of Taylor Swift were one glaring example. ChatGPT meanwhile has been used to generate academic essays by students, essentially cheating. 

“It needs some guardrails,” Teik Lim, president of the Newark-based New Jersey Institute of Technology, said in an interview last month.

AI-generated content could, for example, be required to display a prominent disclaimer that it is AI-generated, Lim said.

Kristin Dana, a computer engineering professor at Rutgers University, said that in some cases, AI might have trouble with such basic tasks as discerning between a school bus and an ostrich, given the right conditions. 

“Deep learning can fail in surprising ways,” she said at the Princeton summit, in reference to the process by which AI teaches something to a computer. 

What's NJ doing with AI?

In December, Murphy and Princeton University President Christopher Eisgruber said they would establish an AI hub at the Ivy League school. It would, under the plans, bring jobs and economic development while pushing forward the state’s AI industry.

New Jersey has an artificial intelligence task force , which is responsible for analyzing the potential social impacts and risks that come with artificial intelligence. The task force is also responsible for educating the state’s workforce and offering recommendations to authorities.

Fairleigh Dickinson University's Madison campus is sponsoring a contest for middle school and high school students worldwide to create content using ChatGPT , the free AI system.

Day trip to Suzdal from Moscow: transport, sights, maps and tips

 DAY TRIP TO SUZDAL

  Suzdal is one of the most popular destinations on the Golden Ring and the whole city is often described as an open-air museum.  The city has no railway station and practically no heavy industry, meaning that is has preserved its provincial charm and a great deal of architectural monuments.

  From Moscow, Suzdal is not as easy to get to as Sergiev Posad (the closest Golden Ring city to the capital) but it is worth going the extra distance as Suzdal provides more of a contrast from Moscow.  If you make use of high-speed trains it is possible and not too demanding to visit for even just a day, but of course spending the night there is recommended to soak in the atmosphere or to combine it with a visit to neighbouring Vladimir.  As the city is a very popular tourist destination you will have no problem finding a cafe or guesthouse there.  There is practically no public transport in the city, but the city is small and most sights are located relatively close to each other.

  Buses directly to Suzdal leave from Moscow’s Schyolkovsky Bus Station.  There are about 9 buses a day and it takes around 4½ hours depending on traffic.  The buses stop at Vladimir too.  Using this option will mean a rather exhausting day trip.

Orientation and Main Sights

  Suzdal is a relatively small city and it is not difficult to walk around the city to see most of the sights.  

  The main road in the city is Ulitsa Lenina which runs north across the whole city.  

  The main sights of Suzdal are located either on or just off this road, including the two main sights: the Suzdal Kremlin in the south and the Spaso-Yevfimiev Monastery in the north.

  Suzdal is famous for its medovukha (mead) which is an alcoholic drink made out of honey.  It can be drunk either hot or cold, meaning it perfect in both summer and winter, and you will find it on practically every menu in the city.  There are various flavours of the drink available and even a non-alcoholic version.  In addition to medovukha, you can find all traditional Russian souvenirs in the city and there is a big souvenir market on Torgovaya Ploschad.

Earlier, we brought you news of a deadly Russian missile attack on the city of Chernihiv.

Now, local officials have said the death toll has risen to at least nine.

The city's acting mayor, Oleksandr Lomako, said three explosions rocked the city just after 9:00am local time, hitting a multistorey building.

"Unfortunately, Russia continues to engage in terrorist activity against the civilians and civilian infrastructure as confirmed by this strike on Chernihiv once again," Mr Lomako told Ukrainian TV.

He said several buildings, social infrastructure and many private cars were damaged.

The head of Chernihiv regional hospital said at least 18 people wounded in the attack were being treated there. 

More injured civilians had been taken to other hospitals, he said, and urged locals to donate blood.

Pavel Durov said yesterday that the messaging service was spreading like a "forest fire".

Mr Durov, who is estimated by Forbes to have a fortune of $15.5 billion, said some governments had sought to pressure him but the app, which has now 900 million active users, should remain a "neutral platform" and not a "player in geopolitics". 

For context, WhatsApp, has more than two billion monthly active users. 

He founded Telegram in 2014 after he refused to comply with Russian government demands to shut down opposition communities on his VK social media platform, which he sold. 

It is particularly influential in former Soviet Union republics and, after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, has become a major source of unfiltered content from both sides about the war and the politics surrounding the conflict. 

The app ranked as one of the major social media platforms, after Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok and Wechat.

Croatians are heading to the polls after an election campaign in which battle lines were drawn on whether the country should lean more towards NATO or Moscow. 

Today's vote pits the ruling conservative Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), led by prime minister Andrej Plenkovic, against an alliance of centrist and left-wing parties informally led by populist president Zoran Milanovic and his Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The election comes as the country struggles with the highest inflation in the eurozone, a labour shortage, illegal migration and allegations of widespread corruption.

At stake in the race for the151-seat parliament is not just the nation's future domestic policies but also whether Croatia leans east or west in its international outlook.

If the HDZ stays in control, the country would continue a pro-Western course in supporting Ukraine.

But success for the SDP would shake the HDZ's long dominance of politics and potentially open space for stronger pro-Russian influence in the country, akin to Hungary and Slovakia.

Polls close tonight and official results are expected tomorrow.

Most pre-election polls predicted a victory for the HDZ, but without enough seats to rule alone.

The HDZ has largely held power since Croatia gained independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991. 

The nation became the newest member of the European Union in 2013, and joined Europe's passport-free travel area and the eurozone last year.

A Russian missile attack on social and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine's northern city of Chernihiv killed at least four residents, the acting mayor has said.

Earlier, regional governor Vyacheslav Chaus said: "The enemy hit with three missiles almost in the city centre. There are victims among civilians and many injured."

Emergency services and medics were reportedly working at the site, but limited further details were available.

Chernihiv is about 93 miles away from Kyiv, and the strike comes amid an intensification of Russia's drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian cities, targeting the country's power sector and other critical infrastructure.

This morning, a Russian missile attack on the Ukrainian town of Chernihiv has killed at least four people and damaged infrastructure, according to local officials.

Three projectiles reportedly hit close to the city centre, with civilians among the dead and "many injured".

Here's a quick round-up of the key updates so far: 

• Ukraine's air defence systems destroyed all nine drones launched in a Russian attack, the air force said;
• The IAEA warned that attacks on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant put the world at risk;
• The Kremlin reacted to French President Emmanuel Macron's call for a truce in international conflicts during the Paris Olympics and said Ukraine might use it as an opportunity to regroup and rearm;
• German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he had asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to exert influence over Russia to end the war in Ukraine.

Good morning, and welcome to our overview of the war between Russia and Ukraine as it rolls into another week.

The big news of the weekend came from the Middle East as Iran launched a significant missile and drone attack on Israel. Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack and said Ukraine knows "very well the horror of similar attacks by Russia".

Meanwhile, a Kremlin-installed official in the southern Zaporizhzhia region said 16 people were killed in an attack on the occupied town of Tokmak, which Russia has blamed on Ukraine. Two  people were also killed in a separate shelling in the Russian-occupied Kherson region.

While our live coverage remains paused, we've zoomed out to give you the bigger picture of the war today.

The frontline

Concerns appear to be increasing that Ukraine's defences may be at risk of collapse in the face of a new Russian assault. 

Sources in numerous media outlets over the past couple of weeks have raised this fear as Ukraine is facing shortages of both manpower and ammunition, and appears outmanned and outgunned on the battlefield.

Western officials told Bloomberg the country is now at its most fragile moment since the war began. 

Ukraine's military chief said on Saturday that the battlefield situation in the east had "significantly worsened in recent days" and that Moscow had ramped up its assaults since Vladimir Putin extended his rule in the Russian presidential election.

Reports also suggest Ukraine's second-largest city, Kharkiv, could be among the targets for a renewed Russian assault. 

Kharkiv has faced intense bombardment from Russia in recent months, coming under fire from S-300 ballistic missiles and glide bombs, and was the target of repeated attacks last week. 

The city is not the most likely target of a fresh assault, media reports say, but Russian news outlets have raised the prospect. 

'Massive strikes' on energy infrastructure 

Overnight into Thursday saw a huge assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, with 40 missiles and 40 drones reportedly sent into the country by Russia. 

A thermal power plant just outside Kyiv was completely destroyed and went up in flames, while 200,000 residents in Kharkiv were left without power. 

Vladimir Putin later said he had been "obliged" to attack Ukraine's energy infrastructure after Kyiv conducted attacks on Russian oil refineries.

Attacks at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

Russia accused Ukraine of attacking the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in a series of drone strikes over three days. 

The attacks at the Russian-occupied plant began on 7 April, with the roof of reactor 6 damaged. 

Ukraine has repeatedly denied involvement and said it would never target a nuclear facility, suggesting Russia was behind the attacks.

The UN's nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, has warned the "reckless" attacks "significantly increase the risk of a major nuclear accident". 

It has not said who it believes is behind the attacks. 

Civilian casualties increase sharply

The UN recorded a dramatic increase in civilian casualties in Ukraine in the last month. 

At least 57 children were killed or injured in March - double the number in February - as Russian forces stepped up their attacks. 

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission said it had verified at least 604 civilians killed or injured in Ukraine in March, a 20% increase from the previous month. 

"The March increase in civilian casualties was mainly due to attacks by the Russian armed forces using missiles and loitering munitions across Ukraine and increased aerial bombardments near the frontline," the Rights Office said.

It followed warnings from Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Ukraine country could run out of air defence missiles if Russia keeps up its intense bombing campaign.

At least 10 people, including children, have been killed by shelling in a Russian-occupied town in Ukraine's southern Zaporizhzhia region, a local Kremlin-installed official said.

International diplomacy

In a rare meeting between a head of state and a minister, Chinese President Xi Jinping met Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov for talks on Monday. 

The pair met in the Chinese capital, where they pledged to strengthen communication. 

It was also a big week of diplomatic talks for the UK foreign secretary, who headed to Washington to appeal to Congress over the stalled multi-billion-dollar aid package for Ukraine. 

Lord Cameron made what was seen by some as an unusual trip to visit Donald Trump in Mar-a-Lago - likely because Republicans blocking the aid bill in the House of Representatives are aligned with Mr Trump. 

The foreign secretary was tight-lipped about what was discussed afterwards, saying the pair had "discussed a range of important geopolitical subjects". 

While live coverage of the war remains paused, here's a quick round-up of the key updates: 

• Two people were killed by Ukrainian strikes on the Russian-held parts of Kherson, the Moscow-installed regional governor said;
• Russia's defence ministry said its air defence systems destroyed 10 Ukraine-launched drones over the Krasnodar region in southern Russia and five drones over the Black Sea overnight; 
• Ukraine similarly claimed to have downed 10 Russian drones;
• The death toll in Zaporizhzhia from yesterday's attack, which Russia blames on Ukraine, rose to 16;
• President Zelenskyy condemned last night's attack by Iran on Israel.

A Ukrainian rocket also struck a machine-building plant in Russian-occupied Luhansk in eastern Ukraine, injuring three civilians, according to Moscow-based official Vladimir Rogov.

Meanwhile, Russia has claimed to have taken a village in Ukraine's Donetsk region. 

Russia's defence ministry said the capturing of Pervomaiske had improved its tactical position on the frontline. 

Ukraine's army chief has also warned the situation on the eastern front had deteriorated in recent days, with Moscow's forces intensifying its armoured assaults. 

Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi said battles were still raging for control of a village west of the devastated Bakhmut - an area that has seen some of the bloodiest fighting throughout the war.

Donald Trump's Business Records to Be Used Against Him in Trial

Donald Trump's trial in New York will be a "paper case" relying on business records between the former president and his ex-lawyer, Michael Cohen , according to a legal expert.

Joyce Vance, a former federal prosecutor and legal analyst who is a frequent critic of the former president, made the remarks while previewing Trump's historic falsifying business records trial, which will begin on Monday with jury selection .

Trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in relation to so-called "hush money" he arranged for Cohen to pay adult film star Stormy Daniels to keep an alleged affair she had with Trump a secret ahead of the 2016 election. The money was listed in Trump's company records as "legal fees," which prosecutors suggest was part of an unlawful attempt to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential race.

Trump, the presumptive 2024 Republican presidential nominee, admits reimbursing the $130,000 hush money to Cohen but denies having an affair with Daniels.

Writing in her Civil Discourse blog, Vance noted that prosecutors would need to try and convince the jury that the money Trump paid to Cohen , later listed as "legal fees" to prevent news of the alleged affair from becoming public, was not to protect his marriage, but to help his 2016 election hopes.

Vance also said that they would need to rely heavily on Cohen, arguably their star witness in the case, despite being a "convicted felon and self-confessed liar" when he takes the stand in the New York courtroom to testify against Trump .

"How do we know the hush money payments were about the campaign, not Trump's desire to protect his wife, who was at home with their young child while he was with Stormy Daniels? There are a lot of reasons, but one of the chief ones comes from the prosecution's statement of facts," Vance wrote.

"Trump directed Cohen to delay making payment to Stormy Daniels for as long as possible. He told Cohen that 'if they could delay the payment until after the election, they could avoid paying altogether, because at that point it would not matter if the story became public.' So much for Melania Trump 's feelings."

Newsweek reached out to Trump's legal team via email for comment.

With regards to Cohen, who pleaded guilty in 2018 to federal tax crimes, lying to Congress , and campaign finance violations in relation to hush money payments paid to Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal, Vance added that "presenting a witness like this isn't easy, but the [prosecution's] best strategy is to remind jurors that they didn't pick the witness—the defendant did."

"Here, Cohen has told a more or less consistent version of his story since first agreeing to cooperate. Prosecutors surely wish he had less of a public presence, but he is clearly not a witness within their control," Vance wrote.

"Ultimately, they will have to corroborate his testimony with other witnesses or with documents. But the point remains, why did Donald Trump use Michael Cohen to conceal this scheme if everything was on the up-and-up? Ultimately, this is a paper case, and much of the proof will be in the form of business records and other physical evidence uncovered during the execution of the search warrants on Cohen," Vance added.

"This case is an early chapter in the story of Trump's willingness to cheat in elections and break the law in order to win. In that sense, it's the most fitting place for prosecution to start."

Vance also suggested that Trump understands the seriousness of the charges against him as he made several attempts to delay or throw out the case through the courts, all of which were rejected .

"If it were such a minor matter, you'd expect him to be eager to clear his name instead of letting the case drag on for over a year," Vance wrote.

In a post on Truth Social on Monday morning, Trump accused the proceedings in New York of being a "witch hunt" that aims to stop him from winning the 2024 election.

"As virtually every legal scholar has powerfully stated, the Biden Manhattan Witch Hunt Case is, among other things, BARRED by the Statute of Limitations. This 'trial' should be ended by the highly conflicted presiding Judge ," Trump wrote.

"The Radical Left Democrats are already cheating on the 2024 Presidential Election by bringing, or helping to bring, all of these bogus lawsuits against me, thereby forcing me to sit in courthouses, and spend money that could be used for campaigning, instead of being out in the field knocking Crooked Joe Biden , the WORST President in the History of the United States. Election Interference!"
