Force Quit the browser

If the Safari browser has frozen on your Mac, the easiest way to troubleshoot it is to force quit it. This is to get rid of the technical glitch which prevents your browser from launching normally. Here is what you need to do.

• Tap the Apple menu located in the top left corner.
• Choose the Force Quit option from the drop-down.
• Select Safari in the Force Quit window and press the Force Quit button.

Note: You can also use the Command + Option + Escape combination key combinations to close the Safari browser.

• After the browser is closed, launch it by tapping the browser icon.
• If the browser does not launch, try the next fixes.

Update the Safari browser

Clear Browser Cache

A corrupt browser cache is another probable reason why the Safari browser is not working as intended. Follow the steps below to clear the outdated browser cache:

• Launch the Safari browser.
• Choose the Safari browser from the top menu bar and followed Preferences
• Access the Advanced tab and tick the checkbox preceding the Show Develop Menu in the Menu Bar option.

• Once done, a new option Develop will appear on the top menu bar.

Delete Safari Preferences

Misconfigured Safari settings can also cause such problems with the browser. To fix this, you should delete the browser file that stores the browser preferences. But before you start, you should force quit the browser.

• Launch Finder and then use the Command+Shift+G shortcut key combination to bring up the Go to the folder pop-up.
• Now you have to paste the following path in there and press the Go button. ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Safari/Data/Library/Preferences
• Here, look for the file com.apple.Safari.plist in the list and choose the Move to Trash option.
• After deleting the file, you need to reboot your Mac.
• Now launch the Safari browser and see if the functionality of the browser is restored.

Note: You can tweak the browser settings as per your choice from the Safari Preferences window.

Disable Safari Extensions

Similar to any other browser, the extensions of the Safari browser are also intended to improve the web browsing experience. Ironically, some of the outdated or corrupt extensions start to interfere with the working of the browser and cause random freezing and crashing issues. To catch the problematic extensions, we will begin disabling all the extensions one at a time.

• For this, choose the Safari option in the menu bar and then Safari Extensions.
• Now begin unchecking the check box preceding each of the extensions.
• After disabling all the extensions, force quit the browser as explained in the first method and then launch it again.

• If Safari launches without any problem, you can try enabling one at a time and identify the one causing the problem.
• When you catch it, uninstall it from your web browser.

Safari on Monterey - no windows

After Monterey update, everything was working fine, until a few days later my safari closed all the windows. Since that moment I cannot reopen my safari back. Icons with the "safari" name on the menu bar are visible when trying to launch the app, although, no windows will appear. What I've tried:

• Force quit safari
• Delete all history, erase all cookies and caches
• Delete all plist files
• Remove safari from icloud syncing
• Disabling and uninstalling all of the extensions
• All of the above in the same time
• Invoking safari from some link
• Deletion of all files related to a safari that I could find in ~/Library

I'm running the latest version of Monterey on M1 Macbook Pro.

Any ideas how can I try to fix it?

Everything you need to know about the new Safari in macOS Monterey

Safari becomes more powerful in macOS 12 Monterey. We have compiled for you a list of all the significant new changes in this release.

Apple introduced macOS 12 Monterey during WWDC21, back in June. The first developer beta was released later that day, along with those for iOS 15 , iPadOS 15, watchOS 8, and tvOS 15. Whether you have the latest MacBook Pro or a slightly older, less capable Mac , macOS 12 Monterey will bring big improvements to our favorite desktop machines later this fall. A notable change is the mightier and more colorful Safari in the latest macOS update.

Streamlined tab bar

The new tab bar takes up less space and adjusts its color depending on the webpage you're visiting. This color flow makes it seem like the page is actually filling up the entire Safari window and offers a cleaner look. If you miss the old tab bar design, you may switch back to the old one in Safari Tab Preferences.

By default, the new Compact mode is chosen, but you can always switch to Separate mode if you change your mind. Personally, I use Compact mode because it allows more web content to be viewed at once.

If you dislike the new color adjustments that are based on the pages you're viewing, you may also turn that setting off from Safari Tab Preferences. Just toggle Show color in tab bar on or off.

Redesigned tabs

Tabs now have more rounded corners and a more defined look. They smoothly expand and shrink as you close and add new tabs respectively. This way they're always stretched just enough to fill the tab bar, offering a more uniform appearance.

To simplify the UI (user interface) further, Apple has hidden some buttons behind a 3-dot more menu. Now the Share, Bookmark, New Quick Note, Privacy Report, and Reader View buttons are accessible through this 3-dot menu. If you'd rather have one (or more) of these buttons in a more visible location, you can always edit the toolbar and add them for faster access.

Most of us have separate web pages for our personal and work lives. For the longest time we could create a bookmark folder to categorize our frequents, but that wasn't the fastest or most convenient way to access the right tabs at the right time. This is where tab groups come into the formula.

Tab groups — as their name suggests — are bundled webpages of our own choosing. You can give them a name to make recognizing what category they belong to easier. Once you add tabs to a group, they'll remain there, even after you quit Safari, until you close the individual tabs inside a certain group.

Once you set a group up on one device, it is synced across all of your updated Apple devices. It has to be one of my favorite features on macOS 12 Monterey because it makes separating my entertainment and work tabs an effortless process. I'm always a single click away from switching "profiles" back and forth.

Redesigned sidebar

Apple has redesigned the sidebar in Safari on macOS 12 Monterey. The new sidebar includes the Start Page, your Tab Groups, Received Links (Shared with You), and Collected Links (Bookmarks and Reading List). The new sidebar makes accessing these sections easier and hides them away when they're not needed so you get more web browsing screen real estate.

New privacy protections

Apple has been taking its privacy approaches to the next level for a few years now. New ways to keep users' data safe are always getting added to new releases. An example of that is iCloud+ features that offer VPN and hide-my-email services to paying users. However, non-paying users also get new privacy protections with the latest Safari. Your online privacy is protected through Intelligent Tracking Protection which prevents trackers from profiling you through your IP address.

HTTPS upgrade

When you visit an HTTP website that supports HTTPS, Safari now automatically upgrades you to the latter because it's more secure.

Autofill 2FA codes from Keychain

macOS 12 Monterey also includes the ability to add time-based 2FA (2-factor authentication) codes to Keychain. So now when you are signing into a website, you just Touch ID, and Safari will fill in your email/username, password, and 2FA code, if required. This makes the signing in process a hassle-free one. You no longer have to keep third-party apps to manage and store your 2FA codes.

Bottom line

Combined with the major macOS 11 Big Sur redesign, Safari becomes an even more powerful web browser on macOS 12 Monterey. The previous release introduced the Start Page, where users find the content they might want to visit before they even start typing.

The Start Page bundles your iCloud Tabs, Favorites, Frequently Visited, Shared with You, Privacy Report, Siri Suggestions, and Reading List. It also lets you set a custom background so you add more personality to your web browser. The best part? It syncs to all of your updated Apple devices, so you don't have to set it up manually on each device of yours.

While Safari still lacks some features that some rivals offer, it's slowly becoming a solid opponent to the rest. It offers an objectively minimalistic UI, webpage translations (requires macOS 11 Big Sur or later), Tab Groups, Extensions, and more. At this point it I use it as my sole browser, and I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything by not using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, for example.

It's common for Apple at this point to release major macOS updates a few months after the rest of their operating systems. This is due to the complexity of macOS and to ensure users don't get a rushed, buggy build that ruins their experience with this OS. Here’s how to bring back the old safari tab bar in macos monterey beta – for now.

The new Safari design in macOS Monterey has been controversial, to say the least. The new design is radically different from previous versions of Safari, with features like color adaptivity, a dynamic url bar, and buttons crammed into a single three-dot list. Luckily, Twitter user Zhuowei Zhang has found a way to bring back the old design if you’re not happy with the new one.

This might all be a temporary fix, as Apple could easily remove this ability in a subsequent beta of Monterey. But bringing back the Big Sur Safari design isn’t too difficult. In fact, all you have to do is create a new plist file within the macOS library.

If you’re running the macOS Monterey beta, you can follow Zhuowei’s steps over on their Github page to bring back the legacy Safari tab bar design. You’ll need to copy and paste a snippet of code that disables the “UnifiedBar” feature flag. Once you’ve created the file, make sure to reboot your Mac to allow the change to take effect.

Once you’ve followed Zhuowei’s steps, you’ll have your fully customizable old-school tab bar back in Safari. While Apple may remove this in the future, the fact that this is possible at all suggests that the team might be considering a user toggle to switch between the two layouts.

Has anybody else seen this? I see it on my PowerBook M1 and Mac Studio M1 Ultra. Safari might be running fine for hours, then stops loading new pages or updating any window. Quitting and relaunching the app does not change anything. A new tab stays blank and does not load the Start page. The only thing that fixes it is quitting Safari, opening Activity Monitor and killing all ""Safari Webcontent (cached pages.) I have seen this on multiple systems running Monterey. I have disabled Extensions but it is independent of that. Has anybody else seen this? Some WebKit content in Mail also appears not to load.

I've been having this happen on my 2021 iPad Pro 11 especially after hours of website use. I have not had this happen on my MacBooks yet. I kill the Safari app on iPad OS and it starts working again until it eventually just stops loading pages as if the internet has gone out (while other apps work just fine). Sounds similar to what you're reporting - but iPad OS. :/ I've actually started browsing on my MBP more because of this.

Thanks again. I'll copy those plists and hope I don't need to use them, but good to know they're there just in case. I try to keep a record of every System and Safari parameter I change (apart from those that are easily user accessible) because hey, you never know when there will be unintended consequences from a minor tweak that was long ago forgotten.

I had this issue a few months ago I couldn’t resolve, but I was using the Beta of MacOS and Safari Tech Preview. I attributed this issue to buggy beta software. I no longer have the issue but I have wiped and reloaded to non-beta Monterey and regular Safari.

I have been having abysmal Safari Internet performance since upgrading to the Mac Studio. I do not know if it is the Mac Studio or my Internet. Other devices do not seem affected to the same degree. My frustration is mostly centered on my banking site and trying to open Google search. I tried on Chrome this morning and it seemed better. I am going to try to turn off Private Relay and see if it makes a difference. I wish I could turn it off for just certain websites, but I do not see an option for that

Still a problem with 12.5. Technology preview has the same issue. Firefox does not. Quitting Safari is not enough, have to reboot!

Preview thumbnails not displaying in Finder (Monterey 12.7.4)

• Safe mode doesn’t solve the issue either.
• The search on Activity Monitor for "com.apple.quicklook.ThumbnailsAgent", force quit, and relaunching the Finder works momentarily.
• Any new file I create after that, it goes back to the icon file but not the preview thumbnail. I work creating school material, so that preview is very useful to me.

Does anyone know of a permanent solution for this? It's pretty annoying having to do the activity monitor thing 10+ times a day, specially when the relaunching won't re-open the Finder windows I had to relaunch. Then, I have to open them again manually.

I have read the following in some forum, but I've not tried it yet, anyone knows if it will help as a permanent solution if none other is out there:

Dock this script created in Automator and saved as an App and you can even set a short cut if you will:

do shell script "launchctl kickstart -k gui/501/com.apple.quicklook.ThumbnailsAgent" user name "YUOURUSERNAME" password "YOURADMINPASSWORD" with administrator privileges

do shell script "killall Finder"

Thank you. Sorry for missing that you had tried Safe Mode already.

One other thing you can try is to delete Finder preferences. Sometimes the plist file may become corrupted, and that can cause unexpected behavior.

In Finder, press Command-Shift-G and paste

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist

drag the file to the trash and relaunch Finder.

The script you mentioned seems to automate the process that you described of killing the quicklook agent and relaunching Finder, so at least until you can't avoid that, it will at least let you do that faster.

b) booted normally, and logged in to a new user account

b) I created a new user account, and the thumbnails previews are working there.
