Trek to a high altitude lake in Mt Trishul's shadow

Some of our top treks are favourites because of the mountain views they offer. Think of Chaukhambha from Deoriatal Chandrashila or Bandarpoonch from Dayara Bugyal. It is difficult to find such magnified views of big mountains like these. However, Brahmatal is a trek that takes the cake. It has a view that beats all of these!

Here is why. Right on your second day, you climb out of the beautiful rhododendron and oak forest to see a white wall of the Trishul massif. And these views only come closer as you traverse the ridge towards Jhandi Top.

At Jhandi top, you are almost at the center of the mountain views. To your right rises the massive Mt Trishul and to your left stands Mt Nanda Ghunti. You even see the Ronti Saddle, the ridge that connects Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti!

That is not all. At the highest point of the Brahmatal trek, Brahmatal Top,  a new set of mountains open themselves up before you. You see Mt Neelkanth, and Mt Hathi Ghoda… while Trishul and Nanda Ghunti are to your right. Always there.

Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti, are your companions throughout the trek. Even the highest point of this trek is approached from the side that is exposed to Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti.  This trek deserves to be talked about among treks with the best mountain views.

To top it all, Brahmatal has lovely forests, two lakes to look forward to and a meadow to traverse through.

What I Like About the Brahmatal Trek

Sandhya is a founding partner at Indiahikes. Here’s Sandhya talking about one of the well-known treks in our country.

1 . The Rhododendron forest from Lohajung to Bekaltal

Brahmatal has mesmerising forest walks. You get to walk through the centuries-old forests of Oaks and Rhododendrons. What particularly stays with me is the  dedicated section on Rhododendrons ! Just out of Bekaltal, you get a demarcated section of Rhododendron forests.

The Rhodo forests are a treat to the eyes. The trunks twist and turn in shapes and forms. The trunks are usually bare and smooth wooded. The trees are not too tall and form a nice canopy at the top. They are close enough to form a perfect green roof over your head.

This is what you see throughout the year. If you come here during  March and April, you get a pink flowery roof . If you come here during  winters, you get a white snowy carpet

2 . The ridge meadow walk from Tilandi to Jhandi Top

On the second day, you climb out of Bekaltal trekking up through some of the most beautiful rhododendron and oak forests. As you near the top, you are curious and impatient to see what lies outside the tree line.

You enter the meadow on the mountain top and in front of you is a wall of white mountains. Having climbed all the way up to the ridge (which runs parallel to Ali Bugyal of the Roopkund trek), you see grand views of the Trishul range.

You know you are climbing to the top but the enormity of the  mountain ranges so up close  is something very special to Brahmatal.

Starting there, all the way to Jhandi top is one of the best ridges walks you will do in our mountains. On one side you have the mighty Trishul range fanning out and on the other side opens up to layers and layers of mountain ranges arranging themselves in height order going down all the way to Deval and Tharali.

These are the villages that you drove through to reach the base camp. To your right below the  Trishul, the range spreads out the entire Roopkund trek . Every landmark, every campsite, and every climb on the Roopkund trek is seen from the Brahmatal ridge. I have never stood on one trek and gone through another trek, that too perhaps the most iconic trek in its entirety like this.

3 . The Gujreni Campsite

The Gujreni campsite enclosed by forest but in grassy clearings, with commanding views of mountain tops, I think I could fall in love with these camps.

They are secluded, with plenty of space to stretch your legs, walkabout, or take a peek in the forests, yet, you can just sit in one corner taking in the views. I have done lots of treks and have loved lots of camps, but if you ask me about Brahmatal, then I think it has some of the better campsites.

Trek Trivia

Things Nobody Tells You About Brahmatal

The Arrowheads of Bekal Tal

Tale of the Bekal Naag Devta and the Pundit

brahmatal trek youtube

In the neighbouring areas of Bekal Tal, people can be seen wearing or carrying arrowheads. These are used as lockets, some are displayed in homes, and some are attached to peoples’ walking sticks among other such ornamentations. These arrowheads have a couple of stories behind them.

Uttarakhand is known as dev bhumi (divine or holy land) as Mahabharat is said to have taken place in parts of it. It is said that the arrowheads are from the days of the grand epic when they were used in battles. These arrowheads can be found stuck on trees in the forests as well today too. However, most of them have been removed and are being used by the locals.

There's also another story related to Lord Curzon linked to the arrowheads. It's often hard to verify what is fact and what isn't, but they're good stories to listen to. Make sure you ask your guide or the locals about it.

brahmatal trek youtube

There are stories of a local pundit who would come to pray to this Naag Devta regularly. Pleased with his steady devotion and service, the God once invited him down to his golden temple at the depths of the lake. The pundit is said to have seen a stunning sight. That of an underwater city of snakes, with the Naag Devta presiding over them in his temple.

The story takes a sad turn when the pundit defies the snake god. However, the myth brings forth interesting elements in the region. Not only is the Bekal Tal a sight of this myth, but the Ratgaon water source appears like the meandering body of a snake, as seen from Tilandi. Mythology tells us that Bekal Naag Devta left the lake through that route, leaving the Ratgaon water body in this snake-like figure.

Even the water from Bekal Tal is said to have seeped down along with him and appeared in the Ratgaon source.

5 Reasons Why Indiahikes

brahmatal trek youtube

When we brought out new trails in Indian trekking, safety came with us. Back in 2012, we were the first to introduce microspikes, and two years later, pulse oximeters became standard thanks to us. Nobody does safe treks like Indiahikes. In the mountains, emergencies don't care who you're with – everyone knows that when trouble hits, you look for the yellow tents of Indiahikes.

brahmatal trek youtube

We are pioneers in trekking. Since 2007, we have brought out treks that have become India's most famous treks: Roopkund, Rupin Pass, Buran Ghati, Kedarkantha, Kashmir Great Lakes, Tarsar Marsar, Brahmatal, Phulara Ridge—the list goes on. In 2023 alone, we brought out five new treks in Indian trekking. We know treks better than anyone . This comes directly from the reason why Indiahikes was born: to bring out trek information and enable trekkers to trek on their own.

brahmatal trek youtube

More than 25,000 people trek with us every year. We are the largest trekking organisation in India. 24% of our trekkers come back to trek with us every year. Over 4,000 students from the top educational institutions trek with us every year. Aside from this, families with children choose to trek with Indiahikes knowing that our treks are the safest. We have taken over 8000 children trekking so far, and the number continues to grow.

brahmatal trek youtube

We focus on designing transformative experiences. Our trek leaders conduct thought-provoking exercises that help you reflect and contemplate. This impact stays with you for a long time. Trekkers return feeling energised, more confident, or developing abilities to deal with difficulties. Many have changed careers, rethought their core values, become more humble, shown gratitude to others, or started a new fitness journey.

brahmatal trek youtube

Since 2012, we have pioneered sustainable practices that have become standard in trekking. Using eco-bags, our trekkers have cleared over 120 tonnes of litter from the mountains. We do not carry packaged foods; instead, we serve freshly made food. We do not light campfires; we carry coal to light angethis to keep you warm. Our bio-toilets not only keep our toilets odour-free but also enrich the soil. When you trek with us, you leave mountains better.

Brahmatal, The Himalayan Trek

Index Brahmatal, The Himalayan Trek Always remember: Nothing is certain during a pandemic. Plans change, strangers become family, memories run through the veins and the experience becomes the motivation for another trek. The adrenaline rush and mini heart attacks? Those are just cameos.

Brahmatal Trek Summit at 12000 Ft.

Preparation

We started planning in late October and even after knowing the great lockdown, interstate traveling restrictions, and non-functional public transport we still decided to go for the trek.

We then booked our trek with Trek the Himalayas group. After a lot of Google searches and a hell lot of YouTube videos, I realized I need to get fit first and then started cycling, running and was not even close to the expected stamina for the trek but the workout helped me to keep my muscles loose.

We planned the whole trip, and along with the trek we were also covering Mukteshwar and Munsiyari in Uttarakhand. By road, we were traveling for more than 1300 Km and we didn’t even think once as we knew how heavenly the destination was going to be.

This was also the time when the Farmers’ Bill Bills were passed and the protest against these bills had started around Delhi. Along with this stress we also had to carry a COVID-19 negative report as the Uttarakhand government had mandated the negative report and e-pass to cross the border. 48 hours before the trip everyone had scheduled an RT-PCR COVID-19 test and that was one of the most stressful moments of the trip as even one positive would lead to the cancellation of the whole trip and in addition to that 10 days of quarantine. We needed 6 Negative results and also, we asked the driver to test so there was added pressure.

Himalayan Trek

10th December 2020, was a Happy day as our Optimistic plan was working and we had the required documents, all negative reports, an E-Pass for Uttarakhand, and loads of courage and positivity.

Travelling in a Pandemic

We had communicated to the Trek the Himalayas (TTH) group that we would meet directly at the base camp. Lohajung was the base camp and it was 18 Hrs. drive from Delhi so we took one stop near Nainital and stayed there at night. We Reached Khurpatal at 11 pm, checked in at the hotel and had dinner after that. When I looked up at the sky it was clear and filled with stars. There were two photographer friends with me @shagunbathija and Kaustubh Nerurkar who have a great passion for Stargazing and they started to shoot the sky which looked amazing. This was the first time I had witnessed such a clear sky with thousands of stars.

On 11th December 2020, Early morning we woke up for our first sunrise in the Himalayas. It was the first sunrise of our trip and it was really beautiful. The temperature was around 12 to 15 degrees so a perfect hill station morning. Everyone got ready and did some photoshoots and we checked out from the hotel.

Home Image

Photoshoot at Khurpatal, Nainital

According to the plan, the destination for today was The Base camp, Lohajung. We left around 10 am and we had to cover more than 200km today, the maps estimated it was around 8 Hrs. drive but it took us almost 11 Hrs. to reach the base camp.

The road to Lohajung was not that straightforward as it’s a remote village and the road is also not well developed. Along with that we didn’t have a network and the forest was dense and we had to rely on offline maps. For the last 50 to 60 Km we had to travel in the dark and the roads were really bad. It was tiring but the amazing landscapes of the Himalayas and the beautiful sunset kept us going. We reached Trek the Himalayas base camp around 8 pm and the trek leader was there to welcome us and also sanitize us. The temperature was around 5 degrees and I was already in 4 layers and freezing.

Home Image

Base Camp Lohajung, 7662 Ft.

Ours was the first batch after the lockdown and there were just 6 of us, the 2 trek leaders and some helpers for the entire trek. We got our rooms which were basic with just 4 walls and a mattress, later we realised that it is a luxury to get a bed and washroom at that altitude. We were welcomed with some spring rolls and hot chai followed by dinner. Post dinner we were given a summary of the plan for the next 3 days then we completed all the formalities submitted the required forms and reports and went to sleep. We had to fill out a declaration form and also get one form filled out by a physician who needed to declare us fit for the trek. Read the disclaimer carefully, It's scary!

Home Image

Read the disclaimer carefully, It's scary :p

12th December 2020, Trek Day 1 and we woke up between the great Himalayas to a heavenly sunrise. We woke up at 6 AM. It was really cold and that was the best view I had of my bed. We hadn’t seen the location as we had traveled in the dark and when we saw it in the morning we were stunned, I felt that the bad roads and no network were all for the good as they maintain the sanity and beauty of this place. The more it gets connected to the world, the more commercialized it will get. We spent almost 2 hours doing a photoshoot, whereas we should have done some preparation and warm-up for the trek. We had to rent a couple of gears and also pack our offloading bags (bags which will be carried to the next base camp by mules, so you can just trek by yourself without carrying the heavy bag) and get ready by 9 AM, for which, we were of course late.

 Sunrise from the basecamp

While we were having breakfast, we could sense the weather changing, the temperature was dipping and we could see the snow clouds moving toward us and it was the first snowfall of the winter and our excitement had no limit.

After breakfast, we ran to rent trek gear from the local store nearby. We rented a Poncho, Gaiters, Trekking Pole, and Trekking fleece. The morning was full of a hassle as we had to pack the bags for 4 days and also pack the trekking gear and get ready by 9 AM. Our Trek leader started with the briefing and warned us to be on time as we could not afford to be off the plane in the mountains.

Home Image

Start of Trek Day 1, Mountains in the background covered with snow clouds

Six warriors and 2 trek leaders: nervous and unaware of what’s coming but ready for the adventure (as we only signed up for this ). 100M into the trail and the snowfall started, that was the first time I experienced a snowfall. Everyone was damn excited and everyone was screaming like babies and the ponchos were out. I didn’t plan my packing properly and had offloaded my poncho too. That was good learning as you should plan your packing properly, plan your layering for day/night/snowfall/rain and almost anything because as they say weather in the mountains can change any moment.

Home Image

The transition of trail on Day 1

We started with a brown trail and in 15-20 minutes it had turned into a white trail. The transition to the white trail was unreal and the snowfall was peaceful. I put my music on and I was just enjoying each step. I looked at my friend and we both had that relief in our eyes, all the efforts, all the planning and stress, everything felt less in front of this beauty. Everyone had prayed for a snow trek and the prayers worked out so much that we had to pray for the weather to clear up ASAP.

Home Image

The snowfall hadn't reached the below mountains yet

The first day was around 6 to 7 hours of trek and we were full of energy though our clothes were getting wet, some of the body parts were already frozen and the snowfall was increasing continuously. Our trek leaders were a little bit tense as it is not a good sign, if this goes on till the next day then Brahmatal Lake will be covered with snow and the summit also cannot be done. Trek leaders were thinking of all the permutations and combinations of different trails we could follow and taking weather reports from the base camp.

Home Image

I used to take small breaks while trekking and this gave me some time to enjoy the small flakes of snow falling on my face and also catch my breath. I could relate to the quote that the Journey is important and not the destination.

Hydration Break & Photoshoot

We looked really happy but honestly, we were wasted, we were walking for almost 6 hours and there were no signs of the campsite. The snowfall slightly became a pain in the ass and we couldn’t see a ray of sunlight the whole day. We climbed the last mountain and we could see the campsite beside a frozen lake and that was satisfying. The setup was unreal and felt like I was dreaming. Between some random forest in the Himalayas, a frozen lake, 4 tents one kitchen tent, and complete silence.

Home Image

Campsite 1, End of Trek Day 1, 9690 Ft.

Checked into our tents and there was snow all over our clothes, shoes, gloves, and some forbidden places, which was making us very uncomfortable. We did our cool-down session and there was a small lecture on AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) and some knowledge about mountaineering. Trust me after the lecture you will feel like you have all the symptoms and you should return to the base camp but hold on to this thought, just sit and let it sink in because this is what you came for, and trust me, you’ll be fine in some time. After the lecture, we had some snacks and tea and then at sunset, we went to the Bekal Tal Lake which was around 500M away.

Home Image

Bekal Tal Lake

This Bekal Tal Lake for me was the best scene and it was no less than the scene from Game of Thrones. The temperature was dipping down more and it had crossed zero degrees, there were slight winds and we were standing beside the frozen lake and hearing the stories about the lake. Also, the trek leaders were sharing their experiences and stories about this trek. People get excited about ghost stories when they are on a trip, some locals and our trek Leader were sharing some stories about the Roopkund trek which has a similar lake and the stories are scary (Roopkund Lake is filled with skeletons of extraordinary sizes which didn’t look like a normal human beings’ skeleton).

Post that we walked back to our campsite in the dark and the temperature was below zero degrees. There was a shop beside the campsite and it was a permanent shop which was run by a girl and her younger brother. Their customers were trekkers like us and I have no idea how they sustain in those conditions and survive on those earnings. Their parents work in the base camp and these guys run a shop at around 9700 Ft. that too without basic amenities. At that point, I realized how blessed we are and how small our problems are. We are voluntarily putting ourselves in such harsh conditions for fun and in a couple of days we will be back to our urban life with all the luxuries and they are working high in the mountains to make their daily living.

Post dinner we had our oximeter checkup, at sea level our oximeter reading should be around 95 or more, and at that altitude the air is thin and the oxygen level is not the same in the air so the normal level there is around 80. Everyone’s reading was around 85 to 92, and then guess what was my reading? It was 78 the trek leader looked concerned and I am pretty sure they were not prepared for this and asked me to have more water and keep them informed if I had some breathing problems.

Then post that we had some fireside chats and then moved to our respective tents and started the real test of our physical and mental stability. The tents were on snow, the temperature was minus and we were really tired and feeling a little bit feverish too. Also, the oximeter reading was there in the back of my mind which was haunting. These thoughts were going on in my mind about going back from the first campsite and not continuing ahead but somehow the night passed.

Trek Day 2,13th December 2020

13th December 2020, Trek day 2. I woke up at 6 AM with around 2 to 3 hours of proper sleep and the sunrise was expected around 8 AM but the sky was clear and it was the best news for us. We did our morning routines; also, the first experience of dry toilets was not bad and it was not a big problem as we had bigger problems because everything was frozen. Packing the sleeping bag packing our bags again and clearing the tent was a big task in the morning as your full body is cold your hands are not moving and you are shivering and you have to get things done. We got our gaiters and mini spikes to walk on snow, we put them on and were ready for day 2. This was also going to be a long day as we had to trek for 6 to 7 hours, we had packed our lunches. 2 Hours to Jhandi top which was the first point where we could see Mount Trishul very closely, and then from there it was 3 to 4 hours trek to Brahmatal Lake.

Once we reached Jhandi top I felt like my body was giving up slightly, the sun was out. I was in one layer but still felt my body was cold. My body felt fatigued as I couldn’t have good sleep and was having breathing issues and stamina issues while ascending. Somehow, I kept myself going and reached the Lunch point and my body severely needed rest. The photo below is the location where we stopped for lunch. I had no plans to eat so I just covered my face with a cap and rested. That was the best power nap I had as the sun was out after almost two days and the temperature was also pleasant and it was really necessary for me. After the nap, I had snacks, protein bars, and dry fruits and my lunch was done.

Home Image

My Happy Place :)

I put my music on and I just enjoyed the location and grasped it all in. I realized that trekking is a bit like life, the journey only requires you to put one foot in front of the other … again and again and again. And if you allow yourself the opportunity to be present throughout the entirety of the trek,

you will witness beauty every step of the way, and not just at the summit.

This was also a moment of gratitude where I was just thankful that I could witness this. We should be thankful for what we have; we will end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.

The power nap was really helpful and it gave me the strength to reach the next campsite which was a 2 hour trek from there. Slowly and steadily, we went ahead and as it is said the best view comes after the hardest climb, the second campsite was indeed the best.

Home Image

Campsite 2, 10450 Ft.

We could see the Summit peak from our campsite and also there was no shop like the previous campsite which means no fire for rescue. We requested the trek leaders for a bonfire but it was not allowed by the forest authorities so we had no option left but to bear the cold and survive. The campsite was set up below the Summit mountain and it was 500m away from the Brahmatal Lake. It was an open area so the wind was strong and the temperature was around -5 degrees and the predicted temperature at night was around -10 degrees. Getting out of the tent and going to the kitchen and dining area was also very difficult. Our socks were wet due to the snow and our shoes were also frozen, I couldn’t feel my feet for like two straight days.

Home Image

Inside the Camp

The tent had two areas, one where we used to sleep and the outer area to keep our shoes and trekking poles. We were given a sleeping fleece and a sleeping bag to sleep in the tent and there were two people in each tent. The first night we got the orange campsite and it was a little bit small for two so we took the blue tent which was bigger and had a good balcony too.

Home Image

Dining area

The food from Trek the Himalayas was amazing, we used to get soup, Maggi chai and also in the second campsite we got Jalebi. After the sunset, we were having Maggi and chai in the dining area and everyone was shivering. The sky was clear as it was the meteor shower night and the temperature was dipping due to cold winds and it reached -10 degrees. Everyone had the same question: how will we survive this night? We had planned this trek for the meteor shower which was going to start around 11 PM and the peak of the meteor shower was around 3 AM. We finished the dinner by 8 PM and somehow went back to our camps to sleep early as we had to wake up at midnight, my campmate was feeling a little bit feverish and honestly, I too did not understand what my body was going through as it was the extreme conditions. We decided to wake up around 2.30 AM and experience the Geminids meteor shower from the best place possible.

Home Image

Geminids Meteor Shower captured by @Kaustubh, Brahmatal Lake

At 2.30 AM I somehow gathered the motivation and energy to come out of the warm sleeping bag and go out of the tent where the wind was strong and it was freezing but that is what I had to go through to witness the meteor shower. It was majestic and heavenly outside. I was speechless as there were millions of stars and every 5 to 10 sec, we could see a shooting star. We got whatever we asked for and we were more than content, all the hard work, stress, planning, and effort were worth it at that moment. That is me standing in the above picture with a torch in hand, the struggle was real to capture this as I had to walk 500m away from the campsite and stand there for 15 sec so that the DSLR camera could capture the beauty. I could see there were some footmarks of some animal and it was pin-drop silence out there. The Photographers kept their cameras out of the tent and we went back to sleep for 3-4 hours.

14th December 2020, Summit Day, Trek Day 3.

Again, we woke up around 6 AM and the plan was to do Summit in the morning and then start our descent towards the base camp and take a halt in another campsite which will be around 2 hours far from the base camp. Everyone was freezing and some of them in our group was feeling sick too so one of the brilliant minds in our group came up with a plan that if the basecamp was just 2 hours away from the last campsite then why can’t we directly descent to the base camp after the summit and skip one night in the campsite.

We confirmed this plan with our trek leaders and they were kind enough to consider the plan although they warned us that it’s gonna be a long day but can be done. So, the plan was now to Summit and then we will directly descend to Basecamp on the same day. This was the advantage of trekking in small groups.

Brahmatal, The Frozen Lake

At 9 AM, we started the trek and it was again going to be a long day with 8 to 9 hours of trekking but we were determined to not think about it and just enjoy the last day in Heaven. We packed our bags, visited the Brahmatal Lake, and then started our Summit Day trek. We could see the summit from our campsite and it seemed to just rise high as we went closer to it. After almost 2 hours of ascent, we reached the summit which was around 12,000 Ft. We were closest to the great Mount Trishul and Nanda Ghunti and it was just magnificent. That was the highest altitude I have been in till now and was a proud moment for me. At that moment everything around me was calm and stable and it brought me calmness and satisfaction to myself.

Brahmatal Trek Summit, 12000 Ft.

Oh, how can I put into words, the scenes that delight the eyes, the blessed peace of mind, the sheer exuberance which fills your soul and the list goes on? As we were a small batch and the first batch after the lockdown there was no one out there. The silent forest, the calmness of mountains, and the exhilaration of the summits is something which will stay with us forever. The plan was to spend around 15 Minutes on the Summit and then leave as we had to reach the base camp the same day. We spent more than 1 Hour clicking pictures and creating life memories and we still didn’t want to leave that place.

Trek Leaders , TTH (Meenakshi and Aditya)

The two trek leaders from the Trek the Himalayas group and they were the sweetest trek leaders. Meenakshi was leading the group from the front and Aditya was there at the end making sure everyone was on track and doing fine. I was the last one trekking due to my extraordinary fitness and also I was enjoying the journey way too much. I bonded well with Aditya and the best thing about them is they don’t push you hard, they let you enjoy the scene to the fullest and click pictures and take videos as that is what we came for. They were always accommodating and welcoming about our problems and dynamic plans (which we were good at due to apparent situations ).

Ali Bugyal , The Longest Bugyal in Asia

Everyone clicked their Summit photos and group photos as this would be cherished for a lifetime. I sat there for around 10 minutes and grasped all that was possible mentally and thanked god, thanked god for creating this and also that I was able to witness this. It was not an easy journey and that is the only reason why it was extra special. We had to start our descent and the destination was basecamp. Our bodies felt fresh and energised and all the problems vanished. We realised the real limits of our bodies when pushed hard. Two Nights in Mountains just made us stronger for life and prouder too. It gave us the confidence to survive anywhere and made us physically and mentally fit. Around 1 PM we started the descent. The previous trails were all covered with snow so we had to mark our trail and go ahead. The first stop was Jhandi Top than the other campsite where we were supposed to stay but we skipped that and went straight to basecamp. We reached base camp around 6.30 PM and it was dark by the time we reached, but we spent some extra time witnessing the beautiful sunset.

Sunset during decent , Day 3

The last sunset we witnessed at Lohajung marked the end of our beautiful Himalayan journey — The Brahmatal (Snow) Trek ! My friend and I couldn't believe that it ended and now we had to go back to civilization. Due to all the stress before the trek and the freezing nights in tents we questioned ourselves why we came for this trek, all our friends questioned why to put so much effort and who tires themselves out on a vacation, but at that moment we had answers to all those questions and hopefully, I was able to explain it in this blog.

Home Image

The happiness on our faces explains everything. It was a very proud moment that we summited our first Himalayan trek without any complications, also we completed a 4-day trek in 3 days.

Proudest Certificate

As I said at the start I took you to the beautiful Himalayas at 12000 feet height and got you back safely (Please check yourself for any symptoms of AMS). And If you felt my journey through this blog, please like the post, drop a comment and share it (It will probably inspire me to book another deadly). Thanks for your time and adios.

Trekking Agency

Having followed India Hikes on social media for some time, I opted to join them for the trek. Despite encountering a few initial challenges from miscommunications or last-minute adjustments communicated by the trek organizer, I ultimately had a fulfilling experience. The treks were meticulously organized, with a strong emphasis on safety being their foremost concern.

Day 6 – Lohajung to Rishikesh

The final day is dedicated to the return journey back to Rishikesh. Trekkers can extend their stay in Rishikesh for an additional cost. During my stay, I opted for the Live Free Hostel, which the trekking agency recommended.

The hostels in Rishikesh offer excellent accommodation options with a relaxed and vibrant atmosphere. They provide the perfect setting to unwind and connect with fellow travellers, fostering a sense of camaraderie and friendship.

Which is the Best Season to do the Brahmatal Trek?

The Brahmatal trek offers distinct experiences depending on the season you embark on the adventure.

Winter season (December to February) showcases the trek at its most enchanting, with snow-capped peaks and trails blanketed in pristine snow. However, brace yourself for freezing weather during this time.

Spring season (March to May) unveils a breathtaking landscape adorned with vibrant rhododendron flowers, painting the trail in hues of pink and red, creating a picturesque setting.

The Autumn season (September to November) treats trekkers to crisp, chilly weather and awe-inspiring views of snow-capped mountains, making it another favourable time to undertake the trek.

Conversely, it’s not recommended to attempt the trek during the summer months (June to August) and the rainy season due to unfavourable weather conditions.

What to Pack for the Trek?

Make sure to bring along an additional bag to store items and clothing not needed for the trail at Lohajung. Additionally, if you’re offloading your backpack, carrying a daypack for essentials during the trek is advisable.

Sleeping Bag: The trekking agency provides a sleeping bag each night, but during winter, I carried my own for added warmth.

Inner Blanket: Provided by the trekking agency, this liner is used in the sleeping bag daily.

  • Hiking T-shirts: 3 pairs
  • Hiking Pants: 2 pairs
  • Breathable Underwear: Clean pairs for each day plus two extra
  • Thermal Top and Pants: 1 to 2 pairs
  • Fleece Jacket: 1
  • Hiking Socks: 1 pair for each day plus two extra
  • Woollen Socks for the night: 1 pair
  • Night Clothes: 1 pair with a sweater

Footwear and Accessories:

  • Lunch Box (secure)
  • Toilet Rolls
  • Deodorant (travel size)
  • Eco-Friendly Paper Soaps
  • Toothpaste, Toothbrush, and Tongue Cleaner
  • Safety Pins
  • Personal Medications, including Diamox
  • Power Bank and Charging Cord
  • Water Purification Tablets

These essentials ensure a comfortable and safe trekking experience while adequately preparing for varying weather conditions and terrain challenges.

Essential Items for the Trek:

  • Refillable Water Bottle
  • Emergency Thermal Blanket
  • Headlamp with Extra Batteries
  • Trail Snacks (Dry Fruits, Chocolates, Biscuits)
  • First Aid Kit and Personal Medications
  • Poncho/Rain Coat
  • Fleece Jacket
  • Beanie and Balaclava
  • Hand Gloves (Inner and Outer, Waterproof)
  • Sun Protection Cap
  • Sunglasses and Sunscreen
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Camera (Optional)

These items ensure preparedness for various situations and challenges during the trek, keeping you comfortable and safe throughout the journey.

Other Things Required for the Trail

  • Trekking Shoes: A sturdy and comfortable pair of trekking shoes is essential for navigating varied terrain with ease and stability.
  • Trekking Poles: Trekking poles provide added support and balance, especially on uneven or steep trails, reducing knee strain and improving overall stability.

How Many Layers of Clothes do I need?

I recommend layering up with five layers of clothing for evening and nighttime at the campsites to combat the rapid temperature drop after sunset. Start with thermals as the base layer, followed by a T-shirt, sweater, fleece jacket, and finally, a padded or down jacket for added warmth.

During the trek itself, you won’t require as many layers. A T-shirt paired with a fleece jacket should suffice to keep you comfortable while on the move.

Ensure to cover your neck, ears and head at all times, including when trekking.

Do we need to Carry our Backpack throughout the Trek?

You can have your backpacks offloaded, with ponies carrying them at an additional INR 250 per day per person. If you opt for this service, having a day pack for the trail is essential.

How much did the Trek Cost?

Note: My expenses are based on travelling from Bangalore.

Trek Charges: INR 10,309.

Additional Expenses:

  • Backpack Offload Option: INR 1,000.
  • Transportation between Rishikesh and Lohajung: INR 2,600 per person (round trip).
  • Flight Charges between Bangalore and Delhi : INR 8,500 for a return trip.
  • Bus Charges between Delhi and Rishikesh: INR 1,200 for a return trip.
  • Stay at Rishikesh: INR 1,500 for a private room.
  • Taxi Charges and Miscellaneous: INR 2,000.

Total – INR 27109 per person.

Is there any Wildlife on the Trail?

Indeed, the trail boasts abundant wildlife encounters. We had a thrilling encounter with a bear during our last trekking day. While the bear pursued one of our fellow trekkers, our group’s unity and loud presence deterred the bear, prompting it to retreat with a formidable roar.

Additionally, at the Thilandi campsite, we were treated to the majestic sight of a Himalayan Griffon vulture , adding a fascinating touch to our adventure.

How are the Toilets at the Campsites and on the Trails?

Dry toilets are utilized at the campsites, featuring a pit covered by standing tents. Instead of water, sand dust is used to cover waste, with strict instructions to avoid water or wet tissues, relying solely on toilet paper.

During the trails, nature serves as the restroom, with the wild behind the trees serving as facilities. While this lack of commercialization preserves the trail’s natural charm, it also means no tea houses or toilets along the way.

How was the food provided by India Hikes?

The food experience during the trek was truly outstanding, and it was one of the main reasons I chose India Hikes for this journey. Every meal was served fresh and piping hot, leaving a lasting impression. A highlight of the culinary delights was when we were treated to hot and delicious gulab jamuns at the Brahmatal campsite.

What was the Paperwork Required?

The Brahmatal trek necessitated some paperwork to be completed before the journey:

  • Medical Certificate: Signed by a physician, detailing any pre-existing medical conditions and blood pressure readings.
  • Waiver Form: Signed by all participants, acknowledging the risks involved in the trek.
  • Proof of COVID Vaccination: Certifying completion of both vaccine doses.
  • Proof of Identification: Valid ID for verification purposes.
  • Pre-filled Interstate COVID Pass : Required by the Uttarakhand government for entry into the state.

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, it’s imperative to consult your doctor before embarking on the trek.

Lessons Learned

  • When opting for interstate buses, it’s advisable to choose government-operated services for their reliability and minimal risk of cancellations. For travel to Uttarakhand, consider utilizing the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation buses.
  • For flights, complete the pre-check-in process and have all necessary documents readily available. Given the rapidly changing circumstances, stay updated on interstate travel regulations.
  • Select dry-fit clothing for the trek, and prioritize trek pants with pockets for conveniently stashing your phone and trail snacks.
  • Layering clothing allows for easy adjustment to changing temperatures during the trek.
  • Even with a rain cover for your backpack, safeguard your clothes and electronics by storing them in additional carry bags for extra protection.
  • Pack one or two pairs of warm socks specifically for the chilly nights.
  • Consider bringing hand warmers for comfort in cold conditions, readily available at stores like Decathlon.
  • Include extra shoe laces in your gear for unforeseen circumstances.
  • If you lack adequate gear, consider renting high-quality equipment from the trekking agency.
  • Carry some cash for purchasing refreshments at dhabas along the trail.
  • Keep headlamps easily accessible for navigating in low-light conditions.
  • Trekking poles offer valuable support and stability during the trek.
  • Maintain a steady and cautious pace on the trail, prioritizing safety over speed and taking small, deliberate steps.

How to Get to Rishikesh?

Rishikesh does not have an airport; the nearest one is in Dehradun. If you’re travelling solo, I recommend flying to Dehradun and taking a bus to Rishikesh. Indigo and Air Vistara are two airline providers that operate flights between major cities and Delhi/Dehradun.

The distance from Dehradun to Rishikesh is approximately 50 kilometres, with a travel time of about an hour by road.

From Delhi to Rishikesh, the distance is roughly 250 kilometres, and the journey typically takes 4 to 5 hours by car.

By Public Transport

The most reliable way to travel from Delhi to Rishikesh is by bus, with the journey typically taking around 5 hours by road.

Avoid booking private buses, as they often cancel at the last minute. I experienced this firsthand when a bus scheduled to depart at 8 PM was cancelled at 6:30 PM. Left without alternative transportation, I had to settle for a local red-coloured bus with uncomfortable seats.

For those travelling between Dehradun and Delhi, numerous frequent buses are available, lasting just over an hour.

Refer to the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation for buses.

Travelers can take a train from Delhi to Haridwar, where they can transfer to a bus bound for Rishikesh.

Similarly, one can catch a train from Dehradun to Haridwar and then continue to Rishikesh. This entire journey typically lasts around 3 hours and 30 minutes.

For the latest train schedules and information, it’s advisable to consult the IRCTC website.

Is Brahmatal Trek Safe for Solo Female Trekkers?

Generally, trekking is safest with a trekking buddy or through a reputable trekking agency. I highly recommend against attempting this trek independently or even with your group without the assistance of a local guide. The trekking agency I chose was particularly adept at catering to solo female trekkers, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.

Download the Emergency Plus app for any unforeseen situations. The app does not require a mobile network; it shows your location. This is useful to inform the emergency services in case of any emergency. If you are a tourist, always have good comprehensive travel insurance to cover yourself in case of any emergency.

Closing Notes

Trekking in the Himalayas becomes an addiction, with each journey leaving an indelible mark on your soul. The breathtaking scenery, the camaraderie shared with fellow trekkers, the awe-inspiring starry nights, the serene snow-covered landscapes, and the endearing mountain dogs all create unforgettable memories that linger long after the trek ends. It’s no wonder you yearn to return and relive those precious moments.

What nobody tells you about Brahmatal - Jatropani Peak

While Brahmatal Trek is getting increasingly popular, most people don’t know about its sibling – Jatropani Peak.  Jatropani Peak at 4071 mts is a day’s hike further from Brahmatal Campsite on the west ridge. Brahmatal Trek Itinerary: The Perfect Trek To Unwind Your Soul

After taking some time off for a week, I returned to my office. However, this time, something felt weird. I was not able to focus on work. For the first time, I had an existential crisis at my workplace and kept asking myself questions like these:

“Where am I?

“What am I doing here?

“Was I in a dream last week?”

It took me almost a week to familiarise myself with my workplace surrounding. As my first-ever Himalayan expedition, the Brahmatal trek profoundly impacted me, unlike any other trip that I had done before.

I’m sure it will do the same to you, especially if you’ve never done a Himalayan trek before. Located in Uttarakhand, the Brahmatal trek is known for its vast meadows, panoramic views of snow-laden Himalayan peaks, and its everchanging colours across different seasons of the year.

There are plenty of other attractions on this trek that make it worth it for any beginner trekker. In this guide, I will walk you through some of them via the Brahmatal trek itinerary I followed with Himalaya Trekker that made me fall in love with the mountains.

5. The best beginner trek to offer a complete Himalayan experience

2. reach kathgodam.

  • Day 7: Drive from Lohajung to Rishikesh or Nainital

What is the Brahmatal trek height?

Where is brahmatal.

Brahmatal, also known as Brahma Tal, is a Himalayan trek located 200 km from Nainital in Uttarakhand. The base camp of the trek is Lohajung which it shares with another famous trek in the region, the Roopkund trek. While trekking in the Brahmatal, you can even see the trails of the Roopkund trek on the opposite side.

However, the Hon’ble High Court of Uttarakhand banned the Roopkund trek in 2019. Since then, the Brahma Tal trek has gained popularity as it has a similar landscape to the Roopkund and is much easier than the former.

The Brahmatal trek starts from Lohajung, covering 30 km and spanning six days. Being a popular trek in Uttarakhand, various trek operators conduct this trek.

Why should you do the Brahmatal trek?

There are so many reasons you should do the Brahma Tal trek in Uttarakhand. Given below are five of the most important ones that make this trek a memorable one:

1. Camp near two different alpine lakes

brahmatal trek itinerary

The Brahmatal trek goes through two alpine lakes: Bekaltal and Brahmatal. Not just that, as part of your Brahmatal trek itinerary, your campsites are set up near these two lakes, thereby giving you time to sit beside these lakes and enjoy the scenery.

Both lakes are in distinct settings as well. The Brahmatal lake appears as a heart-shaped crater on a meadow, whereas the Bekaltal lake is tucked deep inside a forest surrounded by oak trees.

Spend some time besides both these and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature.

2. Stunning expansive meadows and ridgelines

brahmatal trek route

One of my personal favourites, the meadows and ridgelines of this trek, is sure to leave you spellbound. It feels as though you are in Switzerland.

This walk starting from Tilandi gives you clear views of enormous mountain ranges, the bluest of skies and snow-laden peaks. In short, everything you could ask for appears in one place in front of you.

But that’s not it, as you walk further, you’ll see the landscapes changing. If you’re a shutterbug, the photos you get on this portion of the hike will be among your favourites.

3. Different seasons, different landscapes

weather in brahmatal

One of the best things about the Brahmatal trek is that apart from being a beginner’s trek, it remains accessible most of the year. You can do this trek during spring (March-April), autumn (September-November) and winter (December-February). There are very few treks in the country that can say that about themselves.

To add to that, the landscapes you experience are entirely different during all the seasons. You’ll encounter rhododendron blooms during spring, clear mountain views during autumn and a winter wonderland filled with snow during winters.

4. Huge snow-laden peaks give you company, daily

brahmatal trek price

The most surprising aspect of this trek is that you get views of snow-laden peaks like Mt Nanda Ghunti starting from Day 1 right in front of your guest house.

As you walk on the meadows of Tilandi on Day 3, you’ll again see the peaks of Mt Nanda Ghunti and Mt Trishul. After that, you get to witness these peaks and their surroundings almost daily from different angles.

The summit climb, however, has the most memorable scenes. You can witness panoramic views of these vast peaks and their neighbouring mountain in all their glory from Khamila Top (the highest point of this trek), leaving you fulfilled to the core.

brahmatal trek location

As I mentioned earlier, the Brahmatal trek made me fall in love with the Himalayas because of all the sceneries and landscapes I witnessed here.

Be it walking through a forest filled with oak and rhododendron trees, camping near alpine lakes, hiking on expansive meadows or seeing snow-laden peaks daily, you’ll feel rewarded, especially if this is your first-ever Himalayan trek.

And the best part is that it doesn’t demand a lot of time or energy from you to have these experiences because the Brahmatal trek is a 30-km trek averaging only 4-5 km daily. It makes the Brahmatal trek one of the most value-for-money Himalayan treks for beginners.

How to reach Brahmatal?

lohajung to brahmatal trek distance

To reach Brahmatal, you need to get to Lohajung first. Now, there are a couple of ways you can reach Lohajung.

1. Reach Dehradun

Dehradun is on the western side of Lohajung. From Dehradun, Lohajung is close to 300 km and a 9.5-hour drive. You could choose this route because Rishikesh is near Dehradun and on the way to Lohajung. As such, you can come early before the trek commences and spend some time in Rishikesh.

If you’re coming from a different part of the country, you can take a flight to Dehradun. You can also take a flight to New Delhi and then take an overnight train/bus to Dehradun to save some costs. There are plenty of trains/buses to Dehradun.

From Dehradun, you need to hire a private/shared cab to reach Lohajung.

To make it convenient for you, you can use the shared cabs/tempo travellers provided by trek operators that start their journey from Dehradun.

Kathgodam is an alternative to Dehradun, located on the south of Lohajung. You can choose this option to visit Nainital before the trek as it is just an hour away from Kathgodam.

If you’re doing the Brahmatal trek from Delhi, the only way to travel to Kathgodam is to take a train/bus from there. Hence if you’re travelling from afar, you can take a flight to New Delhi before boarding a train/bus to Kathgodam.

From Kathgodam, just like in Dehradun, you need a private/shared cab to Lohajung.

As I did the trek with Himalaya Trekker, they provided shared tempo travellers for the group right outside the Kathgodam station.

Brahmatal trek itinerary

Different operators take different routes and break to conduct the Brahmatal trek. For example, Indiahikes has a campsite at Tilandi on Day 3, while other trek operators camp at Brahmatal. However, one constant thing is that it takes six-seven days to do the Brahmatal trek (including the journeys to and fro Lohajung).

In the Brahmatal trek itinerary below, I share the itinerary I followed during my experience with Himalaya Trekker. Note that I did the Brahmatal trek in October so your experience may be different depending on the season you choose.

Day 1: Reach Lohajung (7,600 ft)

brahmatal trek best time to visit

Your Brahmatal trek itinerary begins from Lohajung. You’ll cover the 10-hour, 220 km long drive from Kathgodam to Ranikhet in a shared tempo provided by Himalaya Trekker.

Note: Some trek operators start their Brahmatal trek itinerary from Dehradun/Rishikesh to Lohajung.

I booked the Ranikhet Express from New Delhi, which reaches Kathgodam by 5 am. If you’re coming from New Delhi, this is the most convenient and economical way to reach Kathgodam on an overnight journey.

Note:  As Nainital is only an hour away from Kathgodam, you can travel to Nainital a day before and explore the place.

After reaching Kathgodam, my fellow trekkers and I freshened up at the washroom in the Kathgodam railway station. At the station, we met other fellow trekkers and met our driver.

By 7 am, we started our road trip. On the way, we stopped to have some breakfast from a roadside restaurant.

The route from Kathgodam to Lohajung is a treat to the eyes. As you cover the distance from Kathgodam to Lohajung, you traverse two different regions of Uttarakhand: Kumaon and Garhwal.

where is brahmatal trek

Initially, you’ll be driving through winding roads as you pass through tall mountains and vast valleys along the way. As you go further, you’ll be crossing pine trees, a couple of rivers and small villages.

In short, the drive from Kathgodam to Lohajung is enough to keep you engaged for 10 hours.

We reached our guesthouse by around 7-8 pm, and by this time, it was dark. At 7,600 ft, Lohajung is cold, especially at night and early morning.

We settled in and had our dinner prepared by the staff of the Himalaya Trekker.

One of the best things about Lohajung is seeing the Nanda Ghunti peak in front of you. From our guesthouse, we were able to see the moonlight falling on the peak at night. If you’re able to reach before sunset, you can also enjoy the orange colours of the sun shining on the snow-laden peak.

It is the perfect icing on the cake after a long journey from Lohajung.

Day 2: Lohajung (7,600 ft) to Bekaltal (9,670 ft)

brahmatal trek route map

We start our Brahmatal trek today. We got ready in the morning, had our breakfasts and left the things we didn’t need in our guesthouse.

Note:  Always put the excess things you don’t need for the trek in your accommodation provided by the trek operator.

At Lohajung, you’ll find a few stores that sell clothes and accessories you might need for the trek, like jackets and shoes. However, I recommend carrying everything in advance instead of relying on these shops.

We met our trek leader and his supporting staff. Unlike the usual trek leaders from cities, our trek leader for the Brahmatal trek was an experienced local trekker from Uttarakhand. Hence, we gained some insightful knowledge and hidden secrets about the Brahmatal trek and this region making our experience more immersive.

brahmatal trek altitude Framedventures

We started our trek at 9 am from Lohajung. Initially, we walked through the streets of Lohajung, featuring a few general stores and houses. We then enter a forest trail and go through small farms and local homes as we start seeing panoramic views of a valley in front of us.

Today’s walk is mostly inside a forest characterised by oak trees and rhododendrons that bloom during February and March. The walk is relatively easy as you’ll ascent through this densely-populated forest alongside a stream. Hence, you’ll find multiple opportunities to fill your water bottle.

After trekking for 4 hours, we reached our first campsite called Khopdalia at around 1 pm. This campsite is a perfect setting for a picnic spot.

brahmatal trek best time

Covered by thick forest, Khopdalia is a small clearing inside a forest with a small pond surrounded by mountain ranges. You’re completely immersed in nature here as all you see, hear and feel are the sights and sounds of nature.

As we checked in to our tents, we had a hot lunch prepared by our staff. In the evening, we visited Bekaltal, just 10 minutes from the campsite. Bekaltal is a small lake surrounded by thick oak trees deep inside a forest. It is a great place to chill and spend an evening.

You can also check out the sunset from the campsite in the nearby mountain ranges in the evening. The entire sky becomes orange.

Day 3: Bekaltal (9,670 ft) to Brahma Tal (10,660 ft)

brahmatal trek wikipedia

Today, we start our trek to Brahmatal, which is 6 km away from Bekaltal.

We started our trek by 9 am. Initially, we trek through the same forest filled with oak and rhododendron trees. This hike is more or less similar to the forest walk we had yesterday.

However, after an hour, we reach the open meadows (called Tilandi) on the trail for the first time. Known as bugyal, this green expanse is a welcome change from the forests we walked through for the past two days.

This hike from Tilandi to Brahmatal is one of the highlights of this trek.

delhi to brahmatal trek distance

Tilandi is a vast meadow with clear blue skies, huge mountain ranges and sweeping valleys nearby. The peaks of Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti were visible right in front of us.

It is hard to find such open landscapes on any trek. We took a break and spent some time raking in the panoramic scenery around us.

From Tilandi, we continued our trek to Brahmatal, walking along a ridge as the landscape around us opened up even more.

brahmatal trek map

The hike is mostly a descent from the ridge, and we reached the Brahmatal campsite by 1 pm. At 10,660 ft, the Brahmatal camp is half a kilometre from Brahmatal, the second lake on this trek.

Unlike our previous campsite, the Brahmatal camp is on a meadow neighbouring a stream of water and surrounded by a few trees.

In the evening, you can visit the Brahmatal lake or roam around the area as there are many sceneries to take. Around this time, we experienced a hailstorm at our campsite, making the entire landscape appear as if there was snow.

brahmatal trek cost

The highlight of the day, however, was the night.

We could see the stars in the sky and the Milky Way Galaxy. It was as clear as you could see. As a photographer, watch out for this occurrence if you’re at this campsite.

Note that it becomes cold at night, though, so layer yourself properly.

Day 4: Brahmatal (10,660 ft) to Khamila Top/Jatropani (13,120 ft) and back to Brahmatal

brahmatal trek blog

The sunrise from the Brahmatal campsite is spectacular. As you open the zip of your tent, you’ll see the orangish horizon line stretching across the sky with the mountain ranges beneath it. To witness the sunrise, try to wake up before 6 am.

The summit of the Brahmatal trek is today. We need to cover a 5-6 km distance that may take up to 6-7 hours to reach the top, i.e. Khamila Top, and come back. As we’ll be returning to the same campsite, you can leave your stuff here.

We had our breakfast and started our journey by 8 am.

brahmatal trek package

This hike to reach the top is challenging. You’ll only be ascending until you reach the top. One hack you can use is taking small steps and climbing in a circle instead of vertically. In this way, you save energy and enjoy the views in a better way.

After climbing for two hours, we finally reached the top, making our efforts worthwhile. You can see panoramic views of Mt Nanda Ghunti, Mt Trishul and the nearby mountain ranges.

We reached the right time because the sun was high up in the sky, and everything was crystal clear. Apart from the snow-clad mountain peaks, we saw neighbouring mountain ranges with vast meadows, ridgelines and a thick layer of clouds floating across the blue skies.

brahmatal trekking

It is a sight to behold and experience, especially if this is your first-ever Himalayan trek.

We spent two hours at the top and had our packed lunch before making our way back as we reached our campsite by 2 pm.

The rest of the day is yours to explore around the Brahmatal campsite.

Day 5: Brahmatal (10,660 ft) to Tilburi (9,670 ft)

brahmatal uttarakhand

We make our way back to Lohajung starting from today. On the way, we stop at Tilburi, which is our last campsite, before we reach Lohajung.

We started our trek by 7:30 am as we crossed the Brahmatal lake on the way. The Brahmatal lake is a heart-shaped lake sitting in the middle of a grassland. At this time, the lake appears in the deep blue as it reflects the sun’s rays.

Today’s walk is another one for the soul. After crossing the Brahmatal lake, we hike across a mountain top and circle around its edges. As we do this, we get another chance to see the neighbouring snow-laden peaks at a distance.

brahmatal trek distance

What makes it even more remarkable is that the scenery keeps changing depending on where you are. It becomes hard to maintain your pace with the group when your eyes seem fixated on such beautiful settings.

Soon enough, we descended through a forest filled with oak and rhododendron trees. This descent can be slightly tricky so be careful.

After covering 5 km, we reached Tilburi (9,670 ft) by 1 pm. It is a small clearing at the edge of a mountain from where we could see the neighbouring mountains and the Wan village that we cross the next day.

brahmatal trek height

Another highlight of the Brahmatal trek happened at this campsite. As we were having tea at 4 pm, we witnessed not one but two rainbows side by side simultaneously. It was the perfect setting to sip our tea while enjoying the rainbows overlooking the colossal mountain ranges in front of us.

The sunset at Tilburi adds to the experience. Around 6 pm, the sun sets as you see its orange glows on a snow-laden peak nearby. You couldn’t have asked for a better ending to the trek.

Da y 6: Tilburi (9,670 ft) to Lohajung (7,600 ft) via Wan

brahmatal weather

The morning at Tilburi is also one for the eyes. We could see tall mountains filled with snow in the backdrop of a forest, among other sights. Make sure you walk up during sunrise.

We had breakfast and prepared for our final hike to Lohajung as we started our trek by 8:30 am.

brahmatal trek from delhi

As you would expect, today’s hike is a complete descent. However, I found this walk unique because we went through a local village called Wan. Wan is a welcome change after spending almost a week in the Himalayas.

As we descent, we see houses entirely made of stones and terrace farmlands. Soon enough, we crossed a vast stream of water where we refilled our water bottles.

We met some kids thereafter, and saw some women tending to their farms during the walk.

brahmatal trek difficulty level

When we finally reached Wan village, the adventure was not over yet. Due to recent landslides and a broken bridge, we had to descend and ascend on broken stones to cross a water stream.

On the other side, a jeep was waiting for us who took us to Lohajung. By 1 pm, we reached Lohajung as we celebrated our trek back at the guest house.

brahmatal lake

You have two options today. Either you can drive back to Rishikesh or go to Nainital. Half of our group went to Rishikesh while the other half went to Nainital.

At either of these places, you can spend a day or two before leaving for your home.

To go to Rishikesh or Nainital, you can choose to go with the same vehicle that your trek operator provided you, or you can ask around for shared cabs in Lohajung.

And with that, our Brahmatal trek itinerary comes to an end.

Brahmatal trek difficulty level

The Brahmatal trek is relatively easy meant, especially for beginners. Even if you haven’t done a Himalayan trek before, the Brahmatal trek acts as the perfect ‘trailer’ to show what is in store for you in the Himalayas.

Barring a couple of days, when you have to ascent constantly, the trek covers 30 km, averaging 4-5 km a day. If you feel that 4-5 km a day is a lot, it still feels less, considering the fantastic landscapes and sceneries you encounter on this trek.

However, do keep in mind that you still need some level of fitness to do this trek. You can consider reading this guide by Indiahikes to prepare yourself.

Best time for Brahmatal trek

brahma tal

One of the best things about the Brahmatal trek is that is you can do it during any time of the year, unlike other Himalayan treks. Different seasons bring out different sceneries from the Brahmatal trek.

The summer season is the only time you can avoid this trek apart from the monsoon season, which remains off-limits for all Himalayan treks.

From March to April, you can watch the rhododendron blooms giving the trek a different shade during the spring season.

In the autumn season, which happens from September to November, the weather in Brahmatal becomes clearer from the dust after the monsoon season and hence you get some fantastic mountain views. That is why I did the Brahmatal trek in October. Hence, it is the best time for the Brahmatal trek if this is what you’re looking for.

The sunrises and sunsets during this season are out of the world. On top of that, the mountain views of Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti are some sights that will stay with you for some time.

brahma tal trek

Another reason I enjoyed this trek during the autumn season even more, was that all the trails were empty. We didn’t meet anyone during our entire hike, making us feel like this trek was exclusive only for us.

Coming to the winters (December-February), this is the time of the year when the entire trail becomes completely white, turning it into a fairyland. While the experience may be slightly tricky, the trek is entirely worth it.

Both the Brahmatal lake and the Bekaltal lake are frozen, giving it a different look altogether. The campsites cover themselves in snow, and most importantly, while most of the other Himalayan treks are inaccessible, this trek remains perfectly accessible even during winters.

So, in short, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a season for the Brahmatal trek. It ultimately comes down to what you prefer.

What to carry/wear for the Brahmatal trek?

brahmatal trek in october

If this is your first trek, it’s essential to ensure that you carry the right things for your trek to have a great first experience in the Himalayas.

You can look at this list below shared by Trek The Himalayas to equip yourself with the right stuff.

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the brahmatal trek.

The Brahmatal trek is a 30-km trek in Uttarakhand that is known as a beginner trek. On average, it covers 4-5 km daily and barring a couple of days including the summit day, the trek is relatively easy even if it’s your first time in the Himalayas.

Which month is best for the Brahmatal trek?

It’s hard to choose a particular month for the Brahmatal trek because it is known for all seasons (except summer and monsoon when the weather in Brahmatal isn’t ideal). Hence it depends on what you want to experience in your trek.

Choose March-April if you want to see Rhododendron blooms, September-November if you wish to have clear mountain views and December to February if you love snow.

Which trek is best: Brahmatal or Kedarkantha?

Both the Brahmatal and Kedarkantha treks are among the best winter treks in the country. Both the expeditions take six days and go up to 12,500 ft.

As someone who has done both the treks, I consider the Brahmatal trek to be better when it comes to being less commercialised. However, I still recommend you to close your eyes and choose any of these treks because both these treks offer amazing sceneries.

The Brahmatal trek starts at 7,600 ft at Lohajung and goes to 13,120 ft at Khamila Top, which is the day of the summit.

On average, the trek height is around 10,000 ft during most of the days.

how to reach brahmatal

The Brahmatal trek in Uttarakhand made me fall in love with the Himalayas and the mountains in general. The sights and landscapes I witnessed in the Himalayas were secondary to none.

If you’re trekking in the Himalayas for the first time, I highly recommend this trek considering the effort it takes to witness the fantastic sceneries the Brahmatal trek offers. Even if you’re an experienced trekker, you can view this trek as a more accessible alternative to the famous Roopkund trek, which has similar views.

Be it the spring, autumn or winter, the Brahmatal trek is one of the few treks in the country which you can do during different seasons. As such, it remains a popular trek in the Himalayas if you want to experience the thick forests, expansive meadows and panoramic views of the snow-laden peaks of Uttarakhand.

Having said that, I hope you enjoyed reading this detailed guide on the Brahmatal trek itinerary. Let me know in the comments below if you have any questions.

Also, once you’re done with the Brahmatal trek, take your Himalayan experience to the next level with the Goechala trek in Sikkim that takes to India’s highest peak, Mount Kanchenjunga.

  • Winter Treks 2023 & 2024

A trek that has captured the hearts of beginner trekkers & winter trekking enthusiasts is the supremely beautiful Brahmatal Trek in Uttarakhand. Set amidst the Trishul range in Uttarakhand, the Brahmatal trek is a winter wonderland with magnificent close-up views of giant mountains surrounding the trail.

The breathtaking Brahmatal Lake!

Nestled in the deep heart of Uttarakhand is the gorgeous and extremely picturesque Brahmatal lake that can only be accessed through the Brahmatal trek. While the lake isn’t huge, it sits in the midst of a snow-carpeted meadow open on all sides with just one lone tree keeping it company. The lake is frozen through most seasons and is crystal clear when not iced up. While the lake is not directly on the trail, one would need to hike a little to come across this beauty. This is also close to one of the campsites on the trek. The lake remains unfrozen in spring and all through autumn and is good months to see the icy blue waters of the lake. Brahmatal is a name that is derived from Lord Brahma. The mythology mentions that Lord Brahma used to meditate on the Brahmatal lake. The lake is situated at an altitude of 3,400 m above sea level.

The Views from Brahmatal!

One of the many reasons we love the Brahmatal trek is because of the views of the giant mountains you find along the trail. While treks like Kedarkantha, Gorson Bugyal, Pangarchulla etc. give you great views of the Garhwal mountains, nothing comes close to what you see on the Brahmatal trail. While the Brahmatal trek starts from the Rhododendron forests, once you finish this climb, it opens up to a gigantic view of the wall of Mt. Trishul Massif (7,120 m/23,359 ft) that resembles a trident. Trust us when we say, you will be awestruck at the first glimpse. The views will get even bigger as you climb further up and you will also get a chance to see Mt. Nanda Ghunti (6309 m/20,698 ft). As you reach Brahmatal Top, you’ll also get up close to Mt. Neelkanth (6596 m/21,640 ft), and Mt. Hathi Ghoda (6729 m/22,070 ft). These views will definitely leave you wondering how minuscule we are amidst these giants.

The perfect winter trek!

Brahmatal trek best time to visit is the winter season. If you have an everlasting love for snow and winters, then this is one trek you must do. Considered to be one of the most popular winter treks in India, Brahmatal is a great trail for Nomads who are new to Himalayan trekking. This trek takes you through two Rhododendron and Oak forests, introduces you to two lakes – Brahmatal and Bekaltal Lakes shows off a gorgeous snow-carpeted meadow, and has campsites that look like a scene right out of Frozen! In peak winters the entire trail gets drenched in snow and you get to spend and camp for five days in a snowy wonderland. Brahmatal trek temperature in winter may range from -8°C to 5°C.

Great beginner trek with a Summit!

The Brahmatal trek covers the highest altitude of 3,733 m (12,250 ft) which is Brahmatal top. The overall brahmatal trek distance is of 30 Km which takes five days to complete. Brahmatal trek difficulty level is moderate. As the trek takes you through forests for most of the trail, the chances of getting Altitude Mountain Sickness is lesser here. The gradient of this trek is moderate which means that the climb is less steep as compared to Kedarkantha, however, the trek distance on each day will be longer. In the winters, you can expect to trek in knee-deep snow and experience snowfall every now and then. While you may require microspikes during the trek, there is no technical climb in this trek. While this is a beginner Himalayan trek, it is always recommended that you be physically fit when it comes to high-altitude treks.

Meet your fellow trekkers in a meet and greet session where you will also be prepped for the upcoming Brahmatal lake trek. In the evening, head out to witness the magnificent Ganga Arati and explore the authentic local cultures of India. Stay the night at Rishikesh.

Day 2: Lohajung

  • Altitude:  7,600 ft (2,316 m)
  • Travel Duration: 8-9 hours

On Day 2, you start traveling towards Lohajung from Rishikesh. This is an extremely scenic drive and will also see picturesque pine trees on the route today. When you arrive in Lohajung you will be greeted by the majestic Mt. Nanda Ghunti Peak. Lohajung is basically a small town located in Chamoli District of Uttarakhand. It is also the base for various popular treks like Roopkund, Brahmatal, and Bedni Bugyal. A good evening stroll around the village is perfect to fill up your Instagram feed & to get yourself warmed up for the trek the next morning. Stay the night at the hotel in Lohajung.

Day 3: Bekaltal

  • Altitude:  7,600 ft (2,316 m) to 9,689 ft (2,953 m)
  • Trek Duration & Distance Covered:  5 hours, 5.8 km
  • Gradient:  Moderate; Mostly ascending through forests

On day 3 you start trekking from Lohajung to the Bekaltal campsite. The trek distance is approx 5.8 Km. The winding trail takes you through beautiful Oak and Rhododendron forests. You will come across the Mandoli village as you cover a short distance post starting the trek. The trail is well laid out and as you go higher up, you will start seeing the Kali Valley where the rivers Kali and Pindari meet. You need to keep trekking from here and after a certain point, when you reach approx 2,590 m (8,500 ft), you will come across a beautiful wooden bridge of about 10 meters right above a stream. You can stop to fill up your bottles at this stream. When you cross the bridge and trek a little further, you will reach Begum a resting point with views of the magical meadows seen in the distance. As you start trekking again you come across two more streams, the last one being Gujrani Stream. It takes about an hour from Gujrani Stream to reach the beautiful Bekaltal campsite. This last distance takes you through an Oak forest which is a moderate climb. As you reach Bekaltal you will start seeing views of the giant Mt. Trishul on the horizon.

Bekaltal is your campsite for the day and a 10-minute hike from Bekaltal will take you to the Bekaltal lake while lies amidst Oak trees. The water of this lake is brown unlike that of Brahmatal lake. In winters you will notice a thin sheet of ice formed over the lake. You will notice how quickly time flies when you sit by the Bekaltal lake and just reminisce your journey through the day.

Dinner will be served in the main tent post which you can go to sleep in your allotted tents.

Day 4: Brahmatal

  • Altitude:  9,689 ft (2,953 m) to 10,440 ft (3,182 m)
  • Trek Duration & Distance Covered:  5-6 hours, 7 km
  • Gradient:  Moderate with a steep climb + gradual ascent and descent towards Brahmatal

On day 4 you start your day early with a scrumptious breakfast at the Bekaltal campsite. Post this, you start packing the essentials for the day. Once everyone is ready you start trekking towards the next stop which is the Brahmatal Campsite. The climb will take you through Oak and Rhododendron trees and then a winding ascending trail as you make your way to the next campsite. If you start early enough you can get good sights of the mountains around before the clouds set in. If the skies are clear, you'll have breathtaking views of the mountains all through the trail with views of Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti specifically. You will constantly gain and drop height as you traverse through the trail today. You will sometimes walk right beside the treeline and sometimes right above it. The treeline will mostly have Rhododendron or Oak trees. You start ascending steep when you climb towards Jhandi Top which becomes the highest point of the ridge.  You can see the mountains in a panorama here and the Roopkund trail is visible from here as well.

The view at Jhandi Top will leave you awestruck. You spend some time here before you start your descent towards Brahmatal which is about 1.5 km from Jhandi Top.

You can unwind at the campsite and relax for the day.

Day 5:   Brahmatal Top

  • Altitude:  10,440 ft (3,182 m) to 12,250 ft (3,734 m) and on to 9,640 ft (2,938 m)
  • Trek Duration & Distance Covered:   8 hours, 7.5 km
  • Trek gradient:  Moderate

Day 5 is your summit day so you start trekking early post your breakfast. The brahmatal trek height is of 12,250 ft (3,734 m). From the campsite, it takes about 15 minutes to reach the Brahmatal Lake which is the first stop along the trail to the summit. The lake sits right in the midst of a meadow and the trail leading up to the lake is a gradual ascent. The lake in winters remain frozen and when visited in spring and autumn shows off it's crystal clear beautiful blue waters. The break at the lake also presents a good photo opportunity while we discourage and do not allow nomads to walk on the lake at any given point in time. The lake is accompanied by a lone tree that has snow all over during winters.

The next step to keep trekking until you find a ridge and from here you get a good view of the entire lake. Again, a great photo opportunity. The first ridge climb is a gentle ascent leading up to the final ridge to the summit. The ridge then opens up to the marvelous views of the mountains you saw at Jhandi Top. This is where you will be resting for lunch. After a 20 minute break you start trekking again but this time it's a descent with mountains to your right and the entire valley to your left. You will now come across closer views of Mt. Trishul, Mt. Nanda Ghunti, and 180 degree views of the entire mountain range with Chaukambha, Mt. Neelkanth, Mt. Mandi, Mt. Nilgiri and many more peaks. This is Brahmatal Top. This is the highest brahmatal trek altitude of 12,250 ft (3,734 m).

Your campsite for the night Daldum is about 3 hours from the Brahmatal Top and you start descending into a forest after spending some time at Brahmatal Top.

Your tents will be ready to welcome you upon reaching Daldum. You will stay the night here and relax after the long trek.

Day 6:   Lohajung

  • Trek Duration & Distance: 4 hours, 2-3 Km

This is where the forest ends and it takes about 30-40 minutes to reach Malling from your Daldum campsite.

From here getting back to Lohajung is easy. You'll find houses on the slopes and then trail made of stones which is frequented by visitors. This trail will lead you to Lohajung directly. Upon reaching Lohajung you will check into your hotel and rest there for the day.

Day 7: Rishikesh

  • Altitude:  6,170 ft (1880 m)
  • T ravel Duration: 7-8 hours

On day 7 you start travelling from Lohajung to Rishikesh. You can expect to arrive Rishikesh late in the afternoon. Check in to your hotel and rest for the day.

Brahmatal Trek

The Best Beginners' Trek in Uttarakhand

Available Batches

Brief description.

Resting in the depths of the Uttarakhand Himalayas, the Brahmatal trek treats you to soaring views of some lofty mountain peaks such as Mt. Trishul, Mt Nanda Ghunti and Mt. Khamet. At an altitude of 3800 m, the Brahmatal trek is open throughout the winters when most of the other trekking routes are closed making it a perfect winter trek for beginners.

Brahmatal hosts one of the loveliest forest walks that are home to diverse bird species and century old oak trees. During spring, the trails of these forests are carpeted in the red and pink blooms of rhododendrons. In winters, the landscape transforms dramatically sheathing the region in pristine white snow, making it nothing short of a Winter wonderland.

Long, never-ending ridgelines, expansive meadows, and 360-degree views of colossal peaks from the summit are some of the other attractions of the Brahmatal Trek. Read more about the Highlights of the Trek here .

Spanning over 28 km, the Brahmatal trek begins from the base village of Lohajung located in the Chamoli district in Garhwal Himalayas. The 6 km trek from Lohajung to the Gujreni campsite runs through dense forests of Conifer, Cedar, Oak and Fir. The Gujreni campsite is at the heart of a beautiful clearing surrounded by Oak and Rhododendrons with panoramic views of snow-capped ranges.

The next day, the trek gradient increases gradually. A 2-hour trek will lead you to the Bekaltal lake, frozen during the winter months, making up for a tranquil view.

The trail heading out of the lake continues to remain dominated by Oak and Rhododendron forests. You start catching glimpses of Mt Trishul through the woods from here on. The forest soon opens up to an expansive meadow, Talindi Top, that rewards you with spectacular views of Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti amongst others. The ascent continues beyond this point until you reach Jhandi Top which surpasses the views offered by Talindi Top. It is a 1.5 km descent from here onwards to the Brahmatal campsite. The campsite is delightfully set at one end of a ridge, opening up to a stunning view of the blue silhouette of mountain ranges stacked layer after layer at the horizon. The Brahmatal lake is only 500 M from the campsite. According to legend, the lake is believed to be the place where Lord Brahma meditated ages ago.

The trek to the summit begins the next day and is nothing short of thrilling. The trail climbs through moderately inclined dense forests eventually translating into a ridge stretch that opens up to gaping views of the tremendous valley behind. The summit offers awe-inspiring vistas of some well-known Himalayan ranges like Mount Trishul, sacred Mount Nanda Ghunti, Mount Chaukhamba, Mount Neelkanth, Mount Kamet and Mount Hathi Ghoda.

While the trail is relatively easy to navigate, the ascent to Brahmatal Top can be challenging during heavy snowfall season. The snow, during these times can run knee deep requiring some effort during ascent and descent. Read more about the challenges of the Brahmatal Trek along with the gear and skills needed to complete the trek here .

Brief Itinerary

Detailed itinerary.

Arrive at Lohajung (2331 M)

Distance: 294 kms (Dehradun to Lohajung)

Duration:   11-12 hours

We begin our journey to Lohajung from ISBT Dehradun latest by 7 AM. It is located at a distance of 294 km from Dehradun and would take about 11-12 hours to cover. The landscapes throughout this drive are striking.

The journey begins with a drive uphill that will take you through the Kumaon region into the Himalayan Belt of Garhwal. The roads here are extensive and the Shivalik ranges can be spotted at the horizon. The setting is tranquil and the Ganga river accompanies you swiftly throughout this stretch.

It gets exciting after this. We will be passing through three of the five iconic confluences of the Alaknanda river (Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Karnaprayag) on the way to Lohajung.

A beautiful showcase of tradition, Devprayag, is the first confluence we will be passing by. It is the converging point of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers. You can clearly see the turquoise of one merging with the teal of the other in the valley below.

40 kms from this point, we reach the historic town of Srinagar on the banks of Alaknanda. The Rudraprayag lies further ahead from here.  It is the confluence of the Mandakini and Alaknanda rivers.

About 33 km from Rudraprayag is the third confluence of Karnapraya, the meeting point of the Alaknanda and the Pindari River. Each confluence is unique in its setting and is a delight to behold!

Lohajung, located in the Chamoli district of the Garhwal Himalayas, is 86 km from Karnaprayag. Expect to reach Lohajung by late evening around 8-9pm.

Lohajung (2331 M) to Gujreni/Lower Bekaltal (2750 M)

Distance: 6 kms

Duration: 4-5 hours

We begin from Lohajung at 9 AM. Packed lunches will be provided for the day. The trek starts on a well-paved stone trail that heads into the forest. The Nanda Ghunti Peak can be spotted right from the beginning of the trek.

After a short walk through the woods, you will come across Mandoli village tucked in to the colossal mountain ranges on your left. The trail ascends gradually in long, serpentine curves from here. Higher up, you will be able to spot the Kali Valley which is the confluence of the Kali and Pindari rivers.

Beyond this point, the trail mostly runs through dense forests of conifer, Cedar, Oak and Fir allowing little sunlight in. There are also Rhododendrons in this region. They bloom during late winter and early spring season and cover the trail in pretty colors of orange and red. During the winter months, these paths are covered with pristine white snow and no flower blossoms.

The next landmark from here is a 10 m wooden bridge running over a stream where you can refill your bottles. Crossing the bridge, you will reach Begum that makes for an excellent resting point overlooking the expansive Navali and Bagdi Bugyals.

At a 20 minute hike from here, you will come across two streams. The second stream which is the Gujreni stream will eventually lead you to a beautiful clearing set in the backdrop of lush forests. This is the campsite for the day.

This region carries a woody scent and is surrounded by umber-brown Oak and Rhododendron forests. After setting up the camps, try spotting some of the birds around like Himalayan Woodpecker, Asian Barred Owlet and Blue-fronted Redstart amongst others. You will encounter snow from late December till Early March at this campsite dropping the temperature considerably.

Rejoice in the seclusion and silence of the campsite for it offers an opportunity to look inwards as much as outwards.

Trek from Gujreni/Lower Bekaltal (2750 m) to Brahmatal (3400 M)

Distance: 5 kms

The trail from the Gujreni Campsite enters a thicket of forests with a moderate ascent throughout. You will catch the first glimpse of Mt. Trishul through the towering trees here. At a 2 hour hike away, lays the Bekaltal lake lined with Oak trees all around.

The color of the water is mud-brown indicating a high amount of dissolved organic matter. During the peak winter months, the lake is likely to be frozen. You can spend some time here immersing in the profound silence of this setting.

The trail dives straight into dense Oak and Rhododendron forests with a steep incline for the next hour. As you walk higher, you will see an idyllic view of the Bekaltal Lake retreating slowly below. The canopy of the forests is almost impenetrable, keeping most of the sunlight out. This allows patches of snow to sustain on the trails even in early spring season.

After an hour or so, the forest opens up to a spectacular meadow, called Talindi Top which offers some phenomenal views of Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti. 1 km from here is the Jhandi top that sets a stunning vantage point surpassing the views offered earlier at Talindi Top. With the skies wide open and several layers of jewel-blue mountains decked one over the other, the spectacle is absolutely surreal to behold.

Jhandi Top marks the highest point on the ridge. The trail begins to descend beyond this point. The Brahmatal campsite is only 1.5 km of a downhill trek on the ridge from here.

After you reach the campsite, you can visit the Brahmatal Lake which is only 500m from the campsite. The Brahmatal lake is believed to be the place where Lord Brahma meditated long ago. This lake is completely frozen during winter season and is a marvel to behold.

One can go out and explore the beautiful photography options available at this place. Be prepared for subzero temperatures that could fall even below -7 degree Celsius during peak winter nights.

Brahmatal (3400 M) to Brahmatal Top (3846 M) to Brahmatal

Duration: 4 hours

The trek starts early around 6AM after having a light breakfast at the campsite. This day of the trek is the most fascinating visually and the terrain is relatively easy to negotiate. There is also the added advantage of leaving the backpacks behind at the campsite since we will be returning here for the night.

During the winter season, your trek leader will provide you with microspikes and gaiters depending upon the snow conditions.

20 minutes into the trek, you will come across the Brahmatal lake tucked into the middle of a lush clearing. The trail till the Brahmatal lake is a steep incline climbing steadily through open grasslands. In the winter season, this area is usually covered in a sheath of white snow making it no less than a Winter Wonderland while the lake glistens under the morning sunshine.

Beyond the lake, the trail ascends moderately and envelopes into a ridge. You will notice the Brahmatal lake retiring in the valley below as you steadily gain altitude. The first ridge is a stretch of gentle ascent that leads you to the final ridge climb.

The final ridge eventually opens up tp a breath-taking spectacle of snow-capped mountain ranges standing so close to you that you feel like you are watching them on a theatre screen. Try spotting Mt. Trishul, Mt. Nanda Ghunti, Mt. Chaukhamba, Mt. Neelkanth, Mt. Kamet and Mt. Hathi Ghoda amongst the ranges.

Although Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti accompany you throughout the trek, the close-up view from the summit is still thrilling to behold. Spend some time at the top immersing in the experience before heading back to the campsite.

Brahmatal (3400 M) to Lohajung (2331 M)

Distance: 11 kms

Duration: 7-8 hours

After having a scrumptious breakfast, we begin the descent back to Lohajung at 8 AM following the same route as the ascent. Be prepared for a long day of trekking.

The trail runs through thick Oak and Rhododendron forests. Eventually, you will come across little Shepherds huts which the locals use to keep their livestock. Following the man-made stone trail beyond that point, you will be descending to the mountain villages leading to Lohajung.

Expect to reach Lohajung in about 7-8 hours. You can then explore the slow and peaceful life at the village and learn about the various legends around the area. Do not miss the sunset in the evening. The orange rays brushing the Mt. Nanda Ghunti peak gently is lovely to watch. This is followed by a piping hot dinner at the guest house.

Departure from Lohajung (2331 M)

Distance: 294 kms

Duration: 11-12 hours

After morning tea, we will be starting for Dehradun early at 6-7 AM. The journey will once again take you through the three confluences of Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag and Devprayag. Expect to reach ISBT Dehradun by 6-7 PM.

In case, you plan on traveling back to Delhi the same night, consider booking a bus that starts at around 10-12 PM to account for any delays we might encounter on the way.

Small Group Size

Our batch sizes are capped at 15 for smaller treks with the trek leader and trekker ratio of 1:8. This ratio, in our years of experience, has proven to deliver the best trekking experience for individuals as well as groups. Capping the size of the group ensures individual attention to each trekker so that no signs of distress or need during the trek go unnoticed. It also helps to form a more cohesive cohort with better group energy which helps define the rhythm and pace of days on the trek. As you go higher up on the BRS scale, since the stakes are higher, expeditions have an even smaller group size with the ratio of expedition leader to climber set at 1:2.

↬ description.

Brahmatal journey (pronounce “Brahma Tal”) is one of the most beautiful treks in the world, and there are comparable paths in the Himalayas, but at a much greater altitude. The Brahma Tal trip is a simple winter hike that has about everything you might want from a winter hiking location. The Brahmatal walk is quickly gaining popularity because to its breathtaking scenery. This walk has a lot going for it, including seemingly endless ridge lines, expansive and pleasant alpine meadows/Bugyal, high altitude lakes, and vistas of beautiful peaks. You’ll want to put the Brahmatal winter trek on your itinerary for more than just the stunning landscapes you’ll see. Brahmatal is a medium-sized lake hidden behind the ridge (coordinates: 30.176878°E, 79.589449°N), and it can be found only by descending from the peak. Lord Brahma, according to myth, did some soul-searching here beside the lake. Bekhal Tal, the second lake on the route, is similarly concealed by the surrounding woodland. Many of you may easily miss it, therefore your guide will likely point it out to you. Both lakes are about the size of a standard one, given that they are so far up. From the route’s highest points, you have a breathtaking view of the High Himalayan ranges stretching from east to west. The peaks of Mrigthuni, Devtoli, and Maikoti in Kumaon may be seen on the right as you go north-east. The Trisul mountain and the enormous Nanda Ghunti to the north are spectacular. Nandaghunti and the Bethartoli Himal. The towering peaks of Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, Mana, Kamet, Hathi, and Ghoda may be seen to the west and left. Views of Ali Bugyal, Bedni Bugyal, Roopkund, Junargali, and the distant Ronty saddle, among others, can be seen from this ridge, which is directly opposite the more well-known Roopkund trek.

↬ Itinerary

Day 1- From Rishikesh to Lohajung driving

Pickup will take place at Rishikesh in the morning, and the journey to Lohajung ( 2320 m/7600 ft) is around 220 km long. It’s possible that the trip will take roughly 10 hours, including breaks. The route travels through the Kumaon area and, for the most part, follows the vast valleys that are found in the Shivalik Himalaya. Along the way, we pass through Almora and Kausani. The route progressively winds its way through the conifer forest and reaches the Garhwal administrative area after passing through Gwaldam. The road is named after the Garhwal administrative region. A significant amount of elevation is gained over the last leg of the trek from Deval to Lohajung. In addition to a handful of private hotels, Lohajung is home to a GMVN tourist lodge and a Tourist Rest House. Connectivity is available from all of the main mobile networks here. The view of the sunset from Lohajung absolutely warrants a separate remark. The Nandaghunti massif’s warm hues may likely leave you unable to find words to describe them. the accommodations for the night at the Tourist Rest House or Lodge.

Day 2- From Lohajung to Bekhal tal/Khopdalia trek

Today is the first day of our walk. Starting right next to Lohajung, we make our way slowly up the ridge, which has a modest incline, and continue doing so as we go around the mountain. When we pause and turn around to look behind us along the trail, we are treated to a breathtaking panorama of Didna village and Nandaghunti mountain. In contrast, interesting ridge line formations and the settlement of Mandoli in the foreground capture our attention. The majority of the trek takes place among the thicket of conifer, cedar, oak and fir trees.

Over the course of about an hour, we make a slow ascent up the ridge. From this point, we make our way along a ravine that is covered by a thick growth of vegetation. There is very little sunlight that makes its way in here, and it is quite likely that snow will fall here, if it has not already. After travelling for a bit, we eventually make a turn to the left and come to an area that is good for camping. Khopdalia is the name of this beautiful camping area that is around 2950 metres or 9670 feet in elevation. The whole distance is 6 km, and the time required might be either four or five hours. We set up our tents for the night. Bekhal tal may be reached in only ten minutes from here. You are welcome to see the area with your guide in the afternoon.

Day 3: From Bekhal tal/Khopdalia trek to Brahma Tal

Today, after breakfast, we go out on the main route from the campground and make our way back into the canopy of the forest. The rhododendrons and conifers that make up the woodland are diverse. During the spring, the woods are filled with pink and red flowers. We will arrive at Bekhal Tal (about 3000 metres or 9840 feet) in the next ten minutes. This lake is around the size of a rectangle, and it features a modest temple perched on one of its edges. In a typical year, the temperature drops below freezing in December and stays that way until March. From this vantage point, we have to ascend the ridge, which is a moderately steep ascent that takes around one hour and a half. The walk through the forest continues with just brief rest stops interspersed throughout.  After finishing this ascent, we arrive at the edge of the high altitude meadow known as the “Bugyal” in the Himalayas. During the winter months, Himalayan Monals make their home at this forest edge. From this point on, the view to our right, which is the north-east side, will open out to provide an expansive vista. Peaks of Kumaon like Maiktoli, Devtoli to Mrigthuni, Trishul and Nanda Ghunti, one by one. As we make our way along the ridge, we are treated to one of the most alluring vistas in all of Garhwal. After a fantastic stroll lasting almost an hour, we leave the ridge and descend on the left slope to reach the lake Brahma Tal, which is approximately 3,250 metres (10,660 feet) in elevation and is surrounded by the slopes of the surrounding mountains. This lake is around the size of a medium longitudinal lake, and on this elevation there are just a few trees still standing. The lake is difficult to notice from a distance, but one must approach near enough to catch a glimpse of the dark turquoise water. We found a nice spot near Brahma Tal to pitch our tent and slept there for the night. The distance is 6 km, and travelling it might take between 4 and 5 hours. We set up our tents for the night.

Day 4: From Brahma Tal to Khamila trek and back

Today we are going to make an effort to climb to the top of the peak that is located to our north-west. The highest point of the ridge that we traversed the day before in order to get to the camping spot at Brahma Tal is literally right here where we are standing. The ascent to the top of the ridge should take between three and four hours at a leisurely pace. If you want to reach the peak by 10 in the morning, you need to have an early start—between 6 and 6:30 in the morning. There are two summits, with the western one being the taller of the two (Khamila Top, which is also known as Jatropani at 4000 m/13120 ft), and the eastern one being a few hundred feet lower. At the beginning of the hike, we make our way through the meadow and up the ridge towards the peak. As we make our way closer to the summit, the peaks that extend westward to Nanda Ghunti become increasingly visible from this route. The last portion of the trail up to the peak is littered with boulders. The view from the summit is a genuine panorama that encompasses more than 180 degrees.  From this vantage point, you will be able to view the mountains that surround the Badrinath valley. These mountains go from west to east and include Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, Hati Ghoda, Ronty, Trishul, Mrigthuni, Bethartoli Himal, and Maiktoli and Devtoli. After waiting for half an hour, we make our way back to our tent at Brahma Tal and set up. You will have a view that encompasses the whole valley below as well as the camping area. The whole distance is 8 km, and it may take between six and seven hours to complete.

Day 5: From Brahmatal to Lohajung Trek

We turn around and go back the way we came yesterday and descend to Lohajung. If you didn’t have a chance to see the panorama while you were reaching, you now have another opportunity. This should take between six and seven hours. If you have the time and inclination in the evening, you should make an effort to watch the sunset on the side of the valley towards Deval or Gwaldam. From the Lohajung bazaar, walk downhill for ten minutes until you reach any bend that works. The variety of hues that may be seen in the sky will undoubtedly astonish you. Day 6: From Lohajung to Rishikesh drive

We will depart for Rishikesh today. We continue on the same path until we reach Tharali, at which point we make a sharp right turn and go towards Karnaprayag, following the blue Pindar river. We follow the Alaknanda river from Karnaprayag all the way to Rudraprayag, where it joins up with another tributary called the Mandakini. The holy river Ganga is formed by the confluence of two major rivers, the Alaknanda and the Bhagirathi, which are located in the valley at Devprayag. Brahmatal trek

6 days - 5 night, low to moderate, * gst @ 5% extra, brahmatal trek.

The trek to Brahmatal, a lake where Lord Brahma is said to have meditated according to mythology, is one of the few treks that can be done during the winter months when most trekking routes are closed. Lohajung, the Brahamatal trek’s base camp, is a small town with a lot of mythological significance. It’s important to connect with the locals and learn about the town’s history. These stories provide insight into the local culture and values. The Brahmatal trek, which is on the opposite side of the popular Roopkund, is a great winter choice. One of the many reasons to do this trek is to see the spectacular Himalayan range from the trail.  Read More

The glacial lake is located at a height of 3180 meters. This trek’s trail is completely coated in snow, making it a winter wonderland for snow lovers. Trishul, Nandaghunti, Chowkhamba, Nilkanth, Kamet, Hathi, and Ghoda peaks are among the prominent seven thousand visible. From this trek, you can see much of the Roopkund route, including views of Ali Bugyal, Bedni Bugyal, and Junargali. The walk is entirely inside a coniferous forest with Cedar, Oak, and Fir trees, which is a relaxing experience in the winter. Brahmatal is now largely unchanged and serene due to its lack of popularity. The best time to go on the Brahmatal Trek is between December and February.

One of the things that can be intimidating about buying a cargo ebike is how unfamiliar they feel. Whether a bike is designed with weird geometry and wheel sizes or odd features for heavy hauling, every ride can feel unfamiliar.

For traditional cyclists who want to haul a grocery store trip’s worth of groceries home but don’t want to mess with technology they’re unfamiliar with, the Trek Fetch+ 2 is a decent option. It’s more expensive than some of our favorite alternatives, but it has an easy-to-ride step-through design, well-made components, and great plastic buckets (and other accessories) for storage.

There are bikes with more advanced features for the money, but even after I spent a summer riding the Fetch+ 2, it barely needed a tune-up. For a modern cargo ebike with a classic cargo bike maintenance schedule, it might be worth spending a bit more cash.

On the Road

The Fetch+ 2 is the smaller of Trek’s two latest cargo ebikes, which includes the box-fronted Fetch+ 4 ($8,500) , which is more oriented toward toting around dogs and children in between groceries and beer.

The Fetch+ 2 instead is a more traditional step-through cargo bike that employs a myriad of attachments, most notably two plastic panniers that hang off an extended rack on the rear. You can get a padded seat cover for the rear to let friends hold on and ride, or mount a couple kids’ seats behind you, but I’d still probably use this bike more for errands than transporting little ones.

As an objet d’art , the bike is simple and unassuming, which is ideal for a bike this expensive. The battery is integrated into the frame, but a sizable bulge means nobody will fail to notice it's an ebike. You can get it in three colors. I liked the black of our review unit, but the bright blue would probably be my choice if I was buying one.

While much of the bike will be familiar to anyone who has ever seen or contemplated a cargo bike, Trek really gets the geometry and style of this bike correct as far as making it very usable for many tasks. Even the dual-sided kickstand pops up and down with remarkable ease (shockingly rare on other large ebikes I've used). I particularly enjoyed using the rear panniers for hauling flats of berries and other easily squished items that tend to rattle around in softer panniers.

The panniers fit a ton of stuff; I was able to get four full-size grocery bags spread between the two black plastic totes. I like that they had little plugs in the bottom that you could feasibly use a plastic bag to cover and then fill them with ice and drinks.

I spent a couple months using the Fetch+ 2 as my primary bike, and came away much more impressed than anticipated, given the specs and the price.

On paper, this is an expensive ebike to have pretty standard mid-drive cargo bike specs. The 85 Nm Bosch motor and 500-wH battery are good for 20-plus miles a day loaded down in any city, but they’re not better than models like the larger Xtracycle Stoker, which has the same torque and a 630-wH battery for $4,999. The Trek also doesn’t have a carbon belt drive and variable transmission, which we consider the best (and easiest to maintain) shifting mechanism for cargo bikes.

Overhead view of bike handlebars

The more traditional chain-and-gears drivetrain and no suspension make this a less comfortable and more difficult-to-maintain bike than favorites like the Tern GSD ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ), which costs about the same. I have to say, I was expecting the difference in riding experience to be more severe. The fatter-than-usual 20 x 2.35-inch tires of the Trek absorbed potholes better than other suspensionless bikes. It also stopped just as well as its competitors, thanks to hydraulic disc brakes.

Mid-drive cargo bikes are much better than their rear-hub counterparts, especially when toting larger items or smaller humans, because they allow you to get more torque to the wheels, and provide a more traditional riding experience. I never found myself lacking for power, though I did crunch through the gears a bit when starting on a hill.

The Fetch+ 2 rides really well, with a solid frame and no creaks or sketchiness of any kind (as picked up from my local Trek dealer, another plus of ordering from the brand), and I really liked how bright the built-in lights were when riding home from soccer games and band practices at night. The fat wheels were easy to turn, giving this a turning radius similar to a non-extended ebike when I was making U-turns in the city. It also has a built-in phone mount with a wireless charger, which makes it really nice for using a map app to cruise to unfamiliar places.

It’s not a fun bike to ride in the traditional sense; it’s not the fastest or the most comfortable, but it is satisfyingly robust and confidence-inducing. In my months of riding, I never had a single issue with the bike. That’s unusual given the state of some of the roads I often took the Fetch+ 2 on the side of, and a testament to Trek's great build quality.

If I was a longtime Trek owner and interested in getting into cargo ebikes, I’d certainly give this line a look, with the understanding that I might find something I like better from Tern, Xtracycle, or another brand for the same price—or something from Rad Power Bikes or another more affordable direct-to-consumer manufacturer for less. It’s a well-made bike that does what it claims to do, but it’s on the spendy side.

It is a bit hard to come by, at least in bike shops around my hometown of Portland, Oregon. If you’re interested in this one for your treks around town, I’d make sure to call ahead for a test ride. If you want a familiar-feeling bike with all the frills of electrification, it’s worth a spin.
