Space is a scary place, as we’ve seen in countless movies and TV shows — but the thrills that come with these stories prove that while the dangers of venturing off this planet are many, there are still thrills a’plenty in the great unknown, and adventures beyond our potential comprehension.

Timed to the Season 3 premiere of Syfy’s “The Expanse” and the launch of the Netflix’s “Lost in Space” reboot, here’s a look back at all the great sci-fi television we’ve seen set in the cosmos, a rich tradition of storytelling that’s captured our imagination for decades. (For the record, while “Lost in Space” Season 1 was a bit too grounded on one planet for consideration here, it may make the cut in future seasons.)

Debating what counts as a “space show” is tricky, though one easy rule was that the show has to center around a spaceship or space station of some sort (sorry, stargates don’t count). Some of these selections below didn’t last all that long — several Season 1s weren’t followed by Season 2s — as television, much like space itself, can be an unforgiving environment. But that doesn’t mean they didn’t shine brightly when they had the chance.

18. “Defying Gravity”

In retrospect, it’s kind of hard to believe “Defying Gravity” was actually ever a real show made for broadcast television — one starring Ron Livingston, even! It’s not just that the ABC drama about a team of astronauts embarking on an epic tour of the solar system was tonally much closer to “Grey’s Anatomy” (romantic entanglements and all) than “The Right Stuff.”

But what did air was fascinating, as it gave real effort to ground the storytelling in ways that made the scenario seem legitimately plausible. Well, that is, until the glowy space rocks showed up, all part of a series of twists creator James Parriott explained after the show’s cancellation would have led to some of the most bonkers TV ever. “Defying Gravity” was one weird show, and we would have liked to see more of it.

17. “Final Space”

It’s still early days yet for the TBS animated series created by Olan Rogers and David Sacks, but so far the first season has proven itself to be far more than the comedy we might have expected based on early trailers, with some epic-scale space-set sequences. Plus, the stellar voice cast includes Fred Armisen, Tom Kenny, Tika Sumpter, Steven Yeun, Gina Torres, Keith David, David Tennant, and also… Mooncake.

Mooncake is the best — adorable and yet highly lethal. He adds a level of cute darkness to the adventures of Gary (voiced by Rogers), a one-time prisoner who gets drawn into an intergalactic conflict over Mooncake’s fate — even though Mooncake is more than capable of taking care of himself.

16. “Space: Above and Beyond”

Glen Morgan and James Wong left “The X-Files” in 1995 for this one-season adventure, which tracked a team of young fighter pilots who get enlisted in the war to save humanity from alien invaders. There were plenty of interesting sci-fi touches to the action, including the introduction of clone soldiers that brought up some deep questions about the nature of humanity. But more importantly, there were kick-ass space battles (especially given the level of technology available in 1995 for such things). More a war show than an exploration show, “Space: Above and Beyond” still showcased the thrill that comes with breaking out of our atmosphere.

15. “Virtuality”

“Virtuality” had a lot of early buzz associated with it in 2009, as it represented “ Battlestar Galactica ” creator Ronald D. Moore returning to sci-fi television for a pilot directed (brilliantly!) by Peter Berg. Plus, check out this stacked cast: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (“Game of Thrones”), Kerry Bishé (“Halt and Catch Fire”), Joy Bryant (“Parenthood”), Jose Pablo Cantillo (“The Walking Dead”), Ritchie Coster (“Happy!”), James D’Arcy (“Cloud Atlas,” “Agent Carter”), Clea DuVall (“Veep”), Omar Metwally (“The Affair”) and Jimmi Simpson (“Westworld”). The premise was also an exciting one, albeit somewhat similar to “Defying Gravity” (which coincidentally came out the same year) — an ensemble cast heads out on a dangerous deep space mission, one that’s being documented live in part as a reality show being broadcast back to Earth.

However, “Virtuality” was less about weird glowy space rocks and more about two big ideas: Our home planet is currently besieged by environmental crises that threaten the end of mankind, making the crew’s mission all the more important. And also, the crew’s primary form of entertainment — a virtual reality system that lets them live out all manner of fantasies — is malfunctioning in a major way. There were a ton of big ideas here, but while the show never went anywhere beyond a one-time airing on Fox in the summer of 2009, you can still find the full-length pilot available for sale on DVD.

14. “Red Dwarf”

Red Dwarf X Photocall at the Prince of Wales Cinema Leicester Square Robert Llewellyn Craig Charles and Chris BarrieRed Dwarf X Photocall - 03 Oct 2012

The rare space show that plays as a comedy, “Red Dwarf” has been a cult favorite for decades, initially premiering in the UK in 1988 and continuing to release new episodes even as recently as 2017. Iconic for both its longevity as well as its relatively bonkers plotting (which involved several major resets over the years, killing off every character at one point and then resurrecting them), the series quickly developed its own wackadoo world view, while also having a great deal of fun playing with sci-fi tropes with pure irreverence. Bopping around space with Lister and his pals might not be the safest of adventures, but they did seem to have a good time.

13. “Black Mirror: USS Callister”

Black Mirror USS Callister

When publicity photos for the Season 4 premiere of Charlie Brooker’s Netflix anthology series began to circulate, they led to a lot of questions — most especially why the show, normally based in a world that looks a lot like ours, was doing a “ Star Trek ” homage. The answer not only proved to be one of the show’s most intriguing twists to date, as we discover that the world of “Space Fleet” has been recreated by bullied-turned-bully Robert (Jesse Plemons), and he’s using his virtual world to torture those he feels have wronged them. While “USS Callister” is in many ways a postmodern riff on “Trek,” it also manages to build up to an exciting climax that J.J. Abrams himself would be proud to direct.

12. “Star Trek: The Next Generation”

No Merchandising. Editorial Use Only. No Book Cover Usage.Mandatory Credit: Photo by Moviestore/REX/Shutterstock (1602497a)Star Trek: The Next Generation , Patrick Stewart, Michael Dorn, Brent Spiner, Marina SirtisFilm and Television

Proving that “Star Trek” wasn’t just the domain of Kirk and Spock, the 1987-1994 series featured some pretty epic moments. While not as dark or complex narratively as subsequent “Trek” installments, “Next Generation” did manage to wow us both narratively and visually — whether facing off against the Borg, the Klingons, the Romulans, or beyond. Life wasn’t all that tough on board the Enterprise (compared to other ships, the place was basically a Lexus) but it didn’t skimp on the action when the time came for it.

11. “Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2003)”

The 2003 animated series technically no longer exists in “Star Wars” canon, but while later shows like the 2008 “Clone Wars” and “Star Wars: Rebels” represented quality efforts to extend the universe to new worlds, artistically neither reach the same levels as this. In hiring “Samurai Jack” creator Genndy Tartakovsky to tell his version of the events between “Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith,” Lucasfilm ended up with a truly groundbreaking series that was rich with striking visuals and exciting action; as Tartakovsky recently discussed with Uproxx , his work might continue to have a strong influence on the franchise.

10. “Babylon 5”

Created by J. Michael Straczynski (who would later collaborate with the Wachowskis for the Netflix series “Sense8”), this five-season adventure took some very odd twists and turns, with epic interplanetary struggle getting showcased alongside some groundbreaking CGI effects. While the battles were good, it was the political aspect of the show that was the most intriguing, as the premise focused on a space station created to serve as a neutral ground for peaceful deliberations between alien species — whose battles often took on a Shakespearean feel. But there were also religious overtones introduced, warring telepaths, a Earth government which becomes increasingly totalitarian in scope, and some badass standoffs. “Babylon 5” had great ambition that has kept it memorable for sci-fi fans. (Never forget Ivanova’s take on the Babylon 5 Mantra. )

Top 15 Space Sci-Fi Shows

best space sci-fi TV shows list

The world has definitely come a long way since the inception of the Space Race between the then-Soviet Union and the United States back in the mid-1950s.

While it has certainly ceased to become a competition between Cold War rivals and has moved into more cooperative efforts between many different countries, the Space Race led to a continuing legacy of technological advancements in space exploration.

These developments have also paved the way for enhanced imagination and creativity. Creators now have a foundation on which to expand science fiction – the sky is the limit, literally!

When there are still so many unanswered questions about space and all the things that are out there, your imagination could take you anywhere.

I mean, how much do we really know about the existence of other planets, other worlds, and other species?

A lot, sure, but these TV shows take it all just one step further!

So, here’s a collection of science fiction TV shows that you can binge-watch on all things space!

Killjoys, Space/CTV Sci-Fi Channel (2015 – 2019)

best space sci-fi TV shows

Canadian network Space first ordered Killjoys to series in late 2013 before having the SyFy network jump on board as co-producers, releasing the first season two years later in 2015.

It wrapped up neatly five seasons later in September 2019.

Killjoys focuses on Dutch, Johnny Jaqobis, and Johnny’s troubled older brother D’avin, three interplanetary bounty hunters working for the Reclamation Apprehension Coalition (RAC).

As agents of the organization, they’re duty-bound to execute warrants to search for and apprehend people across what’s called the “Quad”, a four-planet system “on the brink of a bloody, multi-planetary class war”.

Despite this war, however, they must remain neutral in the conflicts despite their personal experiences and beliefs.

Vagrant Queen, SyFy (2020)

recent sci-fi TV series

Unsurprisingly, the SyFy network has yet another show to add to the list and one that premiered in March 2020 and is ten episodes since it was canceled after just 1 season by its network.

Vagrant Queen is based on the comic book series of the same name published in 2018 and created by talented comic book writer Magdalene Visaggio.

In Vagrant Queen , Elida Al-Feyr is a former child queen who’s on the run following the death of her mother and the downfall of their empire at the hands of Commander Lazaro.

She has since survived as an outlaw and scavenger, staying under the radar so her enemies can’t find her.

However, she’s eventually tracked down by acquaintances and told that her mother is still alive.

With their help, she sneaks her way back into her former kingdom to rescue her mother and hopefully, resume her mantle as a child queen.

The Ark, SyFy (2023 – present)

best space travel tv shows

The newest series on this list of the best space sci-fi series is SyFy’s The Ark which just recently earned a second-season renewal.

Set about a hundred years in the future, the show takes place on Ark One, a spaceship en route to Proxima b after Earth has become barely inhabitable.

One year from reaching their destination, the crew of Ark One is awakened after something hits the spacecraft killing most of the upper management of the ship.

Now it’s up to the remaining three lieutenants, who become the highest-ranking crew members on the ship, engineers, officers, and other staff survive long enough for them to get to their new planet.

Lost in Space, Netflix (2018 – 2021)

Netflix sci-fi space series

Here we’re talking about the recent 2018 reboot of the show, though we can’t do that without mentioning the 1965 original series – which itself was a sci-fi reimagining of the novel The Swiss Family Robinson.

This reboot was released on Netflix and has since concluded its 3-season run.

If you’re familiar with the original adventure novel then you’ll know that any adaptation of it is highly likely to focus on a family that is shipwrecked in some way or other.

Lost in Space features the Robinson family, among other families, on the way to colonize a new star system to ensure the safety and survival of the human race.

However, they’re attacked by alien robots and instead, crash on a nearby planet.

As they struggle to survive in a strange, new environment, they must also find their way back to their mothership.

The Expanse, SyFy/Prime Video (2015 – 2022)

best space travel tv shows

Since its premiere in 2015, The Expanse has received critical acclaim and has continued to gain both high ratings and an expanded viewership.

Despite this, SyFy canceled the series after three seasons but luckily, it was subsequently picked up by Amazon Prime Video for its last 3 seasons.

The show is based on the series of science fiction novels of the same name written by James S. A. Corey where we’re catapulted some hundreds of years into the future.

In this future, the solar system has been colonized by humanity and is divided into three major factions centered on Earth, Mars, and the Belt: the United Nations, the Martian Congressional Republic, and the Outer Planets Alliance, respectively.

These places are approaching a state of war, and it’s up to an alliance from all factions to unravel a conspiracy and stop the war.

Star Trek: Discovery, CBS/Paramount+ (2017 – present)

best space travel tv shows

The entire Star Trek franchise undoubtedly fits right into the bill of the space and sci-fi genre and has been around since the 1960s, so far spawning nine series’, thirteen movies, books, comics, games, and many others that have helped cement it into pop culture.

However, we want to home in on Star Trek: Discovery , the seventh series in the franchise.

Star Trek: Discovery takes place around a decade before the events in the original series, which is of course the first series in the franchise.

Here, we become more acquainted with the USS Discovery as they are caught up in a war between the Klingon houses and the United Federation of Planets.

As their adventures continue, they even end up traveling way beyond their – and even our current – future.

The Mandalorian, Disney+ (2019 – present)

best space travel tv shows

Chances are that by now, you’ve already seen multiple variations of the Baby Yoda meme circulating on social media.

In case you didn’t know, that’s from Disney+’s The Mandalorian , which is the first live-action series for the Star Wars franchise .

It quickly rose to popularity and has since received countless positive reviews.

Sharing continuity with the Star Wars movies, The Mandalorian is set five years after Return of the Jedi and 25 years before The Force Awakens .

The titular character is, in fact, the Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin who operates outside of the confines of the New Republic.

The Orville, Fox/Hulu (2017 – present)

space sci-fi comedy series

When Seth MacFarlane’s name is attached to a project, you can be sure that there’ll be a comedic element thrown into the mix.

Fox’s The Orville , which is created, produced, and starred in by MacFarlane, doesn’t disappoint as it racks up ratings from the network and positive reviews from both critics and viewers alike.

The Orville gets its title from the fictional USS Orville, a starship led by MacFarlane’s character, Captain Ed Mercer, that patrols the Planetary Union (an alliance between Earth and other planets) some 400 years in our future.

He commands the Orville alongside his first commander and ex-wife, who he caught in bed with an alien, and thus their space exploration begins.

The Orville pays heavy tribute to the Star Trek franchise in both parodical elements and homages.

Dark Matter, Space/SyFy (2015 – 2017)

best space travel tv shows

Dark Matter is another creation born from a partnership between the Canadian network Space and the American network SyFy.

The show is based on the comics of the same name created by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, published under Dark Horse Comics. It ran for three seasons before eventually being canceled by SyFy.

Six centuries into the future, where space exploration and artificial intelligence seems to be pretty normal, six people wake up from stasis onboard the Raza, a run-down starship that’s basically in ruins.

They have no memories of what they’re doing there or even who they were before coming out of their deep sleep.

Left with no choice but to work together, they team up to find answers and survive on their own – all with the help of a female AI also on board with them.

Another Life, Netflix (2019 – 2021)

best space travel tv shows

Streaming giant Netflix contributes another sci-fi drama to this list with Another Life .

This space sci-fi series features a stunning ensemble cast including Selma Blair, Justin Chatwin, Katee Sackhoff, and Jake Abel, and incorporates various elements typical of the science-fiction genre.

Scientists in the US Interstellar Command scramble to find answers about the alien artifact that has mysteriously landed on Earth.

As these answers remain out of reach, however, it’s up to Captain Niko Breckenridge to command a crew of capable astronauts aboard the Salvare spaceship and figure out the artifact’s origins.

As their interstellar investigation continues to become more and more dangerous, they must also fight to ensure that their mission will ultimately allow them to return home.

Nightflyers, SyFy (2018)

best space travel tv shows

From the brilliant mind of George R. R. Martin (author of the Game of Thrones series of novels) comes a sci-fi horror and psychological thriller series that’s likely to drum up some unsettling nightmare fuel.

Sadly, the SyFy network canceled the series after just one season as it failed to garner enough interest or good ratings.

Nightflyers takes place on the advanced spaceship that the series is named for, where a team of scientists has taken it upon themselves to explore the outer reaches of space to search for alien life forms.

The further into outer space they go, however, the farther they stray from the brinks of sanity as well.

Soon, a series of unexplainable and horrifying events start to ravage the ship and the team realizes that what they have to fear isn’t the unknown outside – it’s the unknown running loose on their ship.

Battlestar Galactica, Sci-Fi (2004 – 2009)

best space travel tv shows

The Battlestar Galactica franchise can trace its roots back to the late 1970s, when it had its beginning with the original series (albeit having run for only one season).

Though arguably less renowned than the two previous sci-fi franchises mentioned here, the world of Battlestar Galactica only continued to grow into further TV show adaptations, books, comics, board games, and video games.

A reboot miniseries was aired in 2003, which eventually led to this Battlestar Galactica series the year after and aired for four seasons.

During its run, we join the titular spaceship Battlestar Galactica, its captain Bill Adama, and its crew as they lead the remaining survivors of the Twelve Colonies after it was attacked and their population was decimated by an alien race.

Firefly, Fox (2002)

best space travel tv shows

Fans of the genre will be deeply familiar with Fox’s Firefly thanks in large part to its status as a cult classic despite it having run for only one season before being canceled by the network.

Even now, it has been mentioned or referenced in various other TV shows such as Castle , The Big Bang Theory , Community , and even the Battlestar Galactica miniseries – not to mention having its own film, comic series, and RPG.

In the far future where Firefly takes place, the United States and China are the only remaining superpowers, having formed an alliance and a fusion of both cultures.

In this world, many of the planets are under the Alliance’s control, but those on the outer edges live with limited authority – but limited resources as well.

The captain and crew of the Serenity starship, who are central to the series, is one of these groups and make a living on cargo runs and smuggling goods and people.

Farscape, Nine Network (1999 – 2003)

best space travel tv shows

The first and only Australian series on this list is Farscape .

In this sci-fi drama, we follow astronaut John Crichton, who finds himself flung across the cosmos after an experimental space mission that goes awry.

Stranded aboard a living spaceship named Moya, Crichton encounters a colorful cast of alien characters, including the enigmatic Peacekeeper Aeryn Sun and the eccentric Dominar Rygel XVI.

Together, they navigate the dangers of uncharted space while evading the relentless pursuit of hostile forces.

Stargate SG-1, Showtime/Sci-Fi (1997 – 2007)

best space travel tv shows

The last series on our list of the best sci-fi space shows comes from yet another sci-fi franchise.

What started as a movie, Stargate in 1994, has since spread to include two direct-to-video films, three TV shows, a web series, an animated series, numerous books, comics, and video games.

Here though, we honor the first TV series in the franchise: Stargate SG-1 .

The series picks up after the events in the original movie, so viewers should be aware that the US government has discovered the presence of the Stargate, one cog in the network of portals across various planets in space.

The eponymous SG-1 is formed by the US Air Force, comprised of special operatives now tasked with exploring the other galaxies and defending the Earth against extraterrestrial threats.

The Expanse

A few years after Garth Ennis's Preacher achieved mild success on AMC, the writer's famous superhero comic  The Boys  touched down on Prime Video and blew the doors off. In the series, a group of corrupt celebrity superheroes grapple for power and fame as a gang of outlaws (aka The Boys) hunts them down individually. It's a violent spectacle that smacks the audience in the face with a heaping helping of social and political commentary. And it's quite good, too.

The Man in the High Castle

What if America didn't win World War II? That's the central question  The Man in the High Castle  aims to answer. Based on Philip K. Dick's novel of the same name, the series takes place in the 1960s and presents an alternate reality where Nazi Germany and Japan share control of the US. When newsreel footage from an alternate timeline where Germany and Japan lost the war surfaces, the seeds of rebellion are planted. Ridley Scott executive produced the poignant, thought-provoking series.

Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams

Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica) and Michael Dinner (Justified) came together to bring  Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams  to life. The futuristic anthology series explores how technology can impact humanity in various fantastic and horrific ways. Narrative  similarities between Electric Dreams and Black Mirror  most certainly abound. However, each episode of the Prime Video program takes inspiration from the work of the titular sci-fi author.

Thematically,  Night Sky  feels reminiscent of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Cocoon. The slow-burn series, which only lasted one season, stars J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek as an aging married couple grappling with the trials and tribulations of their golden years. Also, a mysterious portal to a strange planet exists underneath their shed. This sentimental mystery box series explores aging and mortality in a surprisingly heartfelt way -- thanks to the engaging performances of the two leads.

best space travel tv shows

Inspired by Robert Kirkman's comic series of the same name, Invincible follows Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), an ordinary high school kid who happens to be the son of Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons) -- the most powerful superhero on the planet. When Mark exhibits special abilities, he discovers the unfortunate truth about who his father is and the insidious things he's done. This animated series is beautifully designed, well-written and wonderfully acted. It's seen by many as the best superhero show on TV, and for good reason.

In The Power, Prime Video's series based on Naomi Alderman's 2016 novel of the same name, teenage girls all over the globe suddenly develop the ability to shoot electricity from their hands. How exactly does this superpower change the female experience in America and beyond? Toni Collette and Jon Leguizamo star alongside a cast of talented young women in a series that aims to flip gender tropes and dynamics on their heads.

best space travel tv shows

Paper Girls

It's easy to compare  Paper Girls  to Stranger Things. Parts of the story take place in the '80s and follow a group of kids struggling to make sense of a supernatural event in town as they ride around on their bikes. The similarities end there, though. Based on the Brian K. Vaughn comic books of the same name, the one-season program kicks off when our 12-year-old paper delivery girls face their future selves and fight for survival amid a time travel war that unfolds around them.

best space travel tv shows

Truth Seekers

As surprising as it may seem, Truth Seekers is the first TV show Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have created together. Over the past few decades, the duo cultivated a reputation for kicking out hilarious genre jams from Shaun of the Dead to End of the World. Truth Seekers may not be as laugh-out-loud funny as their previous collaborations, but that's okay. The ghost-hunting series is still chock full of horror homages, and thanks to the fun chemistry of its ensemble cast, it's a worthwhile low-stakes binge.

best space travel tv shows

The genre anthology series boom that followed Black Mirror's initial success helped bring The Feed to Prime Video. It's another program that explores the darker side of technology. The program takes place in a near future London, where people can livestream their day-to-day lives thanks to an implant in their head. Tapping into society's obsession with social media and the dopamine rush that drives terrible decisions, The Feed features a top-notch cast that includes names like David Thewlis (Wonder Woman, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) and Game of Thrones alum Michelle Fairley.

best space travel tv shows

Dead Ringers

Prime Video took a big swing with Dead Ringers. This updated twist on David Cronenberg's cult horror classic finds Rachel Weisz in the dual-starring role as doctors Elliott and Beverly Mantle. Their drive to push the health care envelope throws medical ethics to the wind. The result is a program that never shies away from exploring topics like big pharma's control over women's health, antiquated reproductive practices, body autonomy and so much more.

best space travel tv shows

The rotoscoping animation used in Undone offers a dreamlike tapestry for the audience to take in. One could easily view the show as an ethereal work of art, but there's also deep substance here. The show follows Alma (Rosa Salaza), a troubled 20-something whose life is turned on its head after she suffers an accident. As her reality shatters itself into something else, she must fight to make sense of her trauma. Part mystery, part thriller and part family drama -- it's safe to say that Undone is unlike any TV show you've seen before.

best space travel tv shows

Not to be confused with the short-lived sitcom starring Patrick Warburton, this live-action take on the blue superhero with wiggly antennae is more extensive, more action-packed and takes the comic book genre it's parodying a bit more seriously. Ben Edlund, the creator of the original comic and 2001 TV series, executive produced this iteration of the character, ensuring the program's sense of humor and vibe stayed true to his original vision. Peter Serafinowicz and Griffin Newman have a wonderful chemistry together. Jackie Earle Haley's villainous portrayal of The Terror is an absolute delight. It makes the three-season series a must-watch for any comic book fans.

10 Incredible TV Shows That Prove Animation Is The Perfect Medium For Sci-Fi

Fbi: international's chicago pd casting creates 1 glaring problem, four years later, i still can't believe how empire's series finale was handled.

  • Hard sci-fi shows focus on scientific accuracy with believable premises, devoid of fantasy elements.
  • Complicated sci-fi can be challenging, but when done right, hard sci-fi is immersive and rewarding.
  • The best hard sci-fi shows range from space thrillers to Earthbound dramas, all known for authenticity.

Good hard sci-fi shows are relatively hard to come by, but there have been a few more popping up in recent years. Hard sci-fi is defined by its concern for scientific accuracy and logic. There are no magical systems or elements of fantasy in hard sci-fi, just believable premises that could soon become reality as technology in the real world advances. In most examples, hard sci-fi focuses on a near future where a certain technology has been allowed to develop beyond humanity's potential to control and comprehend it, whether this is artificial intelligence, genetic modifications or something else.

Complicated sci-fi movies and TV shows can often get bogged down in their own logic, and this can be particularly difficult for hard sci-fi shows, which can't magically explain away any plot inconsistencies. However, when it is done right, hard sci-fi can be incredibly rewarding, and much more immersive than most other sci-fi. The best hard sci-fi shows range from space-faring thrillers to Earthbound technological dramas, but they are all categorized by their believable atmospheres and their dedication to accuracy.

Animation is the perfect medium to capture the ambitious intergalactic concepts of sci-fi, and there are some great TV shows that demonstrate this.

15 Defying Gravity (2009)

A crew struggles with the effects of long-term space travel.

Defying Gravity focuses on the psychological effects of long-term space travel with a small crew. This premise should have gotten more interesting and more intense as the series progressed, so it's a shame that Defying Gravity was canceled after a solitary season without managing to fulfill its potential. The flashbacks hamper the show's progress a little too much, but there are signs that it could be a fascinating drama when it keeps the action on board Antares for long enough. There are many better sci-fi shows out there, but Defying Gravity is a novel experiment as a soap opera in space, and it was quirky enough to deserve at least another season.

14 3 Body Problem (2024-)

Earth deals with the consequences of first contact, 3 body problem.

*Availability in US

Not available

Based on the award-winning novels by Liu Cixin, Netflix's new sci-fi series had a lot to live up to. The first season provided a steady start, but more importantly, it sets up an even more exciting future for the show . Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss have a lot of experience juggling huge ensemble casts, and this skills are essential to keep 3 Body Problem ticking along at an even pace. This steady direction, coupled with a few breakout performances, means that 3 Body Problem season 2 could iron out the kinks and deliver on the show's potential.

13 The Man In The High Castle (2015-2019)

An alternative history where world war ii had a different outcome, the man in the high castle.

Set in an alternate reality where the Axis powers defeated the Allies in the Second World War, The Man in the High Castle often puts its sci-fi elements on the backburner to explore the rich landscape of its alternate Earth . There is enough political intrigue and personal drama to make the show interesting even without the sci-fi twist, that there are films in existence which provide glimpses into other realities where the Allies were victorious, or where an American resistance pushes back against oppression.

12 Person Of Interest (2011-2016)

Artificial intelligence is used to predict terrorist activity far in advance, person of interest.

Created by Jonathan Nolan, Person of Interest is a sci-fi drama that focuses on the terrifying intersection between mass surveillance and artificial intelligence. Set in an alternate world that is becoming increasingly likely, Person of Interest follows a software engineer and a Special Forces veteran who team up to investigate people who are deemed as potential threats to national security by an advanced computer known ominously as "the Machine". Person of Interest probes at the relationship between man and machine during the ascent of artificial intelligence , and it questions who's truly in charge.

11 Foundation (2021-)

A group of isolated humans try to survive the galactic empire.

Foundation is more expansive than most hard sci-fi shows . It's set thousands of years in the future as humanity has conquered the galaxy, but this isn't Dune or Star Wars, since the rules of the universe still conform to science and logic. The one fantastical system at play is "psychohistory," but this is merely a pseudoscience that combines psychology and history to try to predict the future. It's only a few steps removed from astrology, so its presence shows that human arrogance will always prove to be the undoing of society. Foundation is packed with stunning visuals, but it also has the substance to back this up.

10 Altered Carbon (2018-2020)

Humans can preserve their consciousness to extend their lives beyond death, altered carbon.

Altered Carbon presents a fascinating murder mystery in the vein of many classic noir thrillers, but the detective at the center of it all has only just had his consciousness rebooted and inserted into another body. Altered Carbon sometimes threatens to tip over into more fanciful sci-fi, but it mostly remains logical and clear. The bold genre mash-up of sci-fi and crime drama is a pleasure to watch, and the two dovetail nicely. Just as Takeshi Kovacs learns more about the new world around him and the puzzling murder he must solve, the audience also learns the rules of the game.

9 Travelers (2016-2018)

People travel back in time to protect their fragile timeline.

Netflix's Travelers could have been one of many similar time-travel shows where the rules are muddy and obscure and the timeline is too convoluted to be interesting. Instead, the show focuses intently on the consequences of its central premise, both in terms of the timeline implications and the philosophical debate . Travelers features several characters from the future who harness technology which can send their consciousness back in time. They work covertly to prevent a series of catastrophes which threaten their very existence, but it's a delicate balancing act as they try to avoid the usual time travel paradoxes which stymie other shows.

8 For All Mankind (2019-)

An alternative history where the space race rumbles on for decades, for all mankind.

Another one of Apple TV's great sci-fi shows, For All Mankind delves into an alternative history where the USA and the Soviet Union continued the Space Race well beyond the 1960s. Each season jumps forward in time to highlight the rapid technological progress born out of the intense competition of the Cold War. For All Mankind season 5 could see private interests getting even more tangled up with space exploration. In this way, the show's alternative history reflects potential real-world scenarios of the near future. For All Mankind manages to maintain enough focus on its characters to carry its plot as it jumps through time.

7 Devs (2020)

A tech giant keeps a shadowy conspiracy under wraps.

Although it only ran for eight episodes, Devs lingers long in the memory. The show follows a software engineer at an enormous tech company who gradually unravels the dark mysteries relating to her employer's top-secret project. Nick Offerman shines as a gruff antagonist who sees himself as the shepherd who will guide humanity into a new era of consciousness, reflecting the obscene power that some real-life tech companies hold. Devs is created, written and directed by Alex Garland , and the series has the same disquieting atmosphere as his movie Annihilation.

6 Orphan Black (2013-2017)

A group of clones find each other and search for answers about their creation, orphan black.

Orphan Black is a showcase for Tatiana Maslany's talents as an actor . She plays several clones, each with their own individual styles and personalities, who were born as part of an illegal experiment. The clones share a unique bond, and this allows Orphan Black to explore themes of family and solidarity as well as examine the controversies of human cloning. Orphan Black is also an exciting thriller, however, as the clones discover that they are being hunted by the corporation responsible for their creation. There are plenty of twists and turns as the clones search for answers, and the series keeps these mysteries interesting across its five seasons.

5 Severance (2022-)

Workers surgically split themselves between the office and the outside world.

If Severance season 2 is anything like the first, then the Apple TV show could creep even further up this list. Severance dissects the grim state of corporate culture , with workers undergoing a medical procedure that splits their memories of work from their memories of their lives outside. From this relatively simple yet original premise, Severance finds plenty of new ways to examine the downside of society's unhealthy relationship with work. The scariest thing about Severance is how the writing and the performances make it seem relatable despite its dystopian atmosphere.

4 Dark (2017-2020)

When children start to go missing, a small town uncovers a strange mystery.

Dark is a German sci-fi show with a deeply fascinating mystery at its core. After children start to go missing one-by-one in a small town, the townsfolk uncover a wormhole beneath the local nuclear power plant. While anything with a wormhole would usually be fantastical to be classified as hard sci-fi, Dark gets a pass due to its relatively grounded exploration of the concept. Dark 's tightly constructed narrative uses multiple timelines spanning several decades , but it remains compelling and comprehensible throughout. Part of the allure of Dark is slowly learning about the complex mechanics at play.

3 Black Mirror (2011-)

A sci-fi anthology about the potential horrors of humanity's obsession with technology, black mirror.

Since Black Mirror is an anthology series, the episodes vary in their approach to science-fiction , but they are mostly grounded and realistic. The best episodes of Black Mirror tend to take a zeitgeisty technology to its dark limits, showing a near future where people's day-to-day lives are orchestrated by oppressive artificial systems. In each of these episodes, the point is that humanity has placed all sorts of stringent limits on itself for no reason other than corporate greed. The season 3 episode "Nosedive," for example, explores a world where people incessantly rate each other on social media, assigning social privileges to those deemed worthy.

2 Westworld (2016-2022)

A theme park staffed by robotic "hosts" goes haywire.

Westworld takes place in a future where the obscenely wealthy can take vacations at a theme park populated by artificially intelligent robots. There, they are free to indulge their every desire, but the robots soon develop sentience beyond their programming. The idea of artificial intelligence developing its own agenda has been everpresent in sci-fi, but there aren't many movies, shows or books that approach this premise quite like Westworld. The automatons can be seen as stand-ins for any number of oppressed groups , as their creators weigh up moral considerations along with financial ones.

1 The Expanse (2015-2022)

Humans across the solar system head toward all-out war, the expanse.

In a future where humanity has spread across the solar system, ther exists a fragile peace between Earth and Mars, until new technologies threaten to grant world-ending power to whoever wields them. The Expanse pairs this epic storyline with a fascinating investigation into a missing persons case. This allows the series to maintain its impressive scope without losing sight of its characters. The Expanse is hard sci-fi at its very best. It eschews the tired tropes of the genre and grounds itself in a reality where everything must make sense. There are no magical solutions for the characters, and this keeps the stakes high.

Ultimate List of 10 Best Space TV Shows

best space travel tv shows

When it comes to the best space TV shows, the competition is really fierce. There have been numerous shows that involved space and science fiction in their themes so we had difficulties filtering the ones that focused solely on space travel and revolving topics. Surely, one might argue that Stranger Things is a show that explores the topics of space and multiverses – but in this list, we focused primarily on shows that are about space exploration and have most of their plot happening in outer space. Without further ado, check out our list of best space TV shows.

Table of Contents

Firefly [2002-2003]

Firefly TV show cast

If your year of birth starts with 19 we are sure that you remember this classic. Firefly had a short history as only one season aired back in 2003 before Fox canceled the show . Many netizens agree that this was the worst mistake Fox has ever made – Firefly didn’t have a single bad episode and the cast was absolutely amazing. Not many shows in history have such a dedicated fan base after only one season and without any kind of book or comic source material. The only reason for Firefly not being our number one on this list is the fact that it is so short – only 14 episodes. If you still haven’t seen it, although it was canceled, watching this classic is a fun way to spend a weekend as this is surely one of the best Space TV shows of all time.

Killjoys [2015-2019]

Killjoys space TV show cast

If you are not a deep sci-fi fan or are simply looking for something a bit more lightweight and action-focused, Killjoys is a good choice when it comes to space TV Shows. The overall impression is that this is a lighthearted, and generally speaking enjoyable, exposition-driven series in which Hannah John Kamen shines in her lead role. The show focuses on the advantures of space mercenaries and most of the episodes can be watched as stand-alone ones. So yeah, you can sit back and enjoy the action – but it is also notable that the main plot intensifies and develops as the show progresses. Killjoys has a total of 50 episodes spanning throughout 5 seasons.

The 100 [2014-2020]

The 100 TV show

This is one of the shows that was initially produced for younger audiences and most of the actors are in their early twenties but due to the popularity it gained, it became so much more. Although the first few episodes started out strong, the quality of the script somewhat deteriorates in “filler” seasons but comes back strong again in the final. Some parts of this space TV show might be a bit cheesy and cosplay is kinda of strange but overall, it was a fun ride – especially since the ending was delivered nicely. Elisa Taylor, Bob Morley, and Marie Avgeropoulos are the leads and their performance was decent in the first season but also progressively better as the show moved forward.

Mandalorian [2019-present]

Mandalorian printscreen

Well you know, it’s baby Yoda and Pedro Pascal in a Star Wars setting – what’s there not to like? No seriously, Mandalorian is one of the (few) good shows that Disney delivered lately – the visual effects are stunning, the main plotline is interesting, the characters are well-developed, and is a fun watch. No point in describing the plot – just by looking at the screenshot above you can get a pretty good picture of what this space TV show is about. So far, 24 episodes have been released across 3 seasons – and more are to come.

Orville [2017-present]

Orville TV show cast

We wrote about Orville in our list of Best Fantasy TV Shows of all time – and we still think that this show is highly under-ranked. It has it all; that true Star Trek vibe that Star Trak reboots miss so much; the overall chill style of humor throughout the show; quirky dialogs and generally well-written characters. Almost all the episodes are stand-alone so there’s no need to binge-watch this – unless you get hooked on it. We enjoyed the first 3 seasons and we are positive that you will as well.

Farscape [1999-2003]

Farscape TV show

If you thought that Firefly was a blast from the past, take a look at this jewel of the science fiction world. Farscape was, and still is, one of the best space TV series for a reason – its unique plot, 90’s fantasy vibe, great cosplay and fantastic choice of actors are what turned so many viewers into fans of this classic. We know that the show is old but it is worth your time. Even if you watched it before it’s still a good candidate for a re-watch as, unlike so many other space TV series, this one really stood the test of time.

Expanse [2015-2022]

Expanse printscreen

The Expanse has been one of the most recent successes of Amazon – or better said, Amazon and SyFy. Based on James Corey’s novel as the show’s source material, SyFy ran Expanse for three seasons until canceling it in 2018. The decision was baffling as this was, and still is, one of the best shows they created judged by both, the audience and the critics. Whatever the reason was, Amazon Prime saw the opportunity and picked up the show, prolonging it for 3 more seasons. The first three seasons were more sci-fi oriented as the final three leaned more toward exploring space politics – but it all came down nicely in the series finale.

Stargate SG-1 [1997-2007]

Stargate SG1

For all the 90’s kids, this is a well-known classic. SG-1 is simply good all-around – the plot, the acting, the costumes, everything except the action which is kind of outdated now when you watch it. However, keep in mind that this show was filmed more than 25 years ago – and as such it surely deserves a place on our list of best space sci-fi series. We won’t get too much into the plot – basically, there are Stargates all around the galaxy and we discover one on Earth. You get a pretty good idea of what happens next – enjoy watching this show and reminiscing about sci-fi shows of the old.

Star Trek: Next Generation [1987-1994]

Star Trek Next Generation

Star Trek is a well-known franchise to all science fiction fans – and there’s no need to describe any plot from this show as it’s one of the most well-known franchises around the world. We just wanted to give this series a well-deserved second spot on our list – and if you haven’t seen it in a long time, it’s time for a re-watch. We guarantee that it’s going to be a much more immersive experience than watching new remakes.

Battlestar Galactica [2004-2009]

Battlestar Galactica ship

So, it all comes to this. This is, in our opinion, the best space TV show of all time. Sure, some other shows had a longer run, and visual effects are better in modern ones – but when it comes to delivering an original story, and producing a true science fiction experience, nothing can come even close to Battlestar Galactica. The show is good for many reasons but the most obvious one is that it covers so many topics and provides an immersive experience for a viewer. It’s also a very long story, a very long journey that came to a satisfying (depending on who you ask) ending. If you haven’t seen it, forget what we wrote about the other shows on our list – watch this one first.

Vuk Radulovic

Vuk Radulovic is a graduated historian with a keen interest in the fantasy genre. For over 20 years he watched, listened, and read basically everything that came across his hands when it comes to fantasy TV shows, books and movies.

He has a particular interest in the Witcher realm as well as the Sword of Truth book series. He thinks the Demon Cycle book series is one of the most underestimated fantasy books of all time. He is looking forward to The Last of Us series.

When he is not in the fantasy realm, Vuk likes to nurture his interest in SEO marketing and content writing.

The 10 Most Rewatchable Time Travel Shows, Ranked

You’ve reached your account maximum for followed topics.

Travel time is probably one of the more popular plot devices within sci-fi (and some fantasy) TV shows. Fans of sci-fi and fantasy are familiar with various forms of time travel, including time loops, arguably made famous in pop culture by Groundhog Day , and traveling to the past to alter the future, reminiscent of Back to the Future . There are also time doors, time portals, wormholes, and your standard time machine. Sometimes, even events are triggers for time travel.

With all the different ways time travel can occur in fiction, there are plenty of television shows with interesting time-travel plots to choose from. However, some time-travel shows are more rewatchable than others because of plot holes, unrelatable characters, or repetitive plot devices. Luckily, there are time-travel television shows out there that are worthy of a rewatch by sci-fi and fantasy fans. These TV shows make time travel interesting with intricate storylines, loveable characters, and mind-bending timelines.

10 'Ashes to Ashes' (2008-2010)

Created by matthew graham and ashley pharoah.

Ashes to Ashes , in the same vein as Life on Mars , is a British crime drama series that ran for three seasons on BBC One. The series stars Keeley Hawkes as DI Alex Drake; it was shot in 2008 by Arthur Layton, and she is sent back to 1981. She comes face-to-face with DCI Gene Hunt (played by Philip Glenister ), whom she had read about during her investigation into the bizarre incidents surrounding Sam Tyler, the protagonist of Life on Mars . Alex is determined to figure out how to get back to her own time, but in the meantime, she teams up with Gene to solve cases.

While Ashes to Ashes tends to settle into a case in each episode, it stands out from a standard police procedural. The mystery of why Alex has been sent back in time permeates through the plot and keeps viewers intrigued about what is going to happen next. Life on Mars leaves the ending of Sam's story ambiguous, and Ashes to Ashes provides an explanation of Alex and Sam's time travel. There are so many interesting details within Ashes to Ashes that provide hints of what is coming in the show’s finale that it makes for a great rewatch. Viewers can pick up on things that they might have missed leading up to the big reveal. Not only are these hints fascinating for viewers to find and try to connect everything together, but the chemistry between the main characters, the moody Gene and the witty Alex, is magnetic, which gives fans a potential romance to invest in. After all, any police procedural needs a good dynamic relationship to keep viewers engaged with the show. Therefore, the Alex and Gene moments alone make A shes to Ashes worth watching again and again.

9 'Russian Doll' (2019-2022)

Created by leslye headland, natasha lyonne, and amy poehler.

After getting hit by a car and dying, 37-year-old Nadia Vulvokov ( Natasha Lyonne ) finds herself reliving the day of her birthday over and over again in Netflix's comedy-drama series, Russian Doll . But, Natasha isn't alone in being caught in a time loop; Alan ( Charlie Barnett ) is also reliving the same day. And this is just season one of Russian Doll . In the second season, Nadia and Alan find themselves going between the past and present day. Nadia is taken back to the 1970s to "visit" her mother, x (y), and Alan goes to West Germany before the tearing down of the Berlin Wall.

When sci-fi fans think of time loops, they might picture the movie, Groundhog Day . Russian Doll separates itself from Groundhog Day by taking the monotony out of its plot with surprising twists and creating space for complex character development. The complexity of the time loops (and eventually time travel) really makes fans think about how everything is connected. Lyonne and Barnett give incredible performances in Russian Doll . Nadia and Alan are flawed characters, but this only makes them extremely relatable. Viewers will want them to escape the time loop and get back to their normal lives they are missing out on. The second season does away with the time loops and brings in time travel. Both Nadia and Alan want to change the past in order to make the future better .

8 'Quantum Leap' (1989-1993)

Created by donald p. bellisario.

Before Scott Bakula helmed the Enterprise as Captain Jonathan Archer in Star Trek: Enterprise , he played a physicist named Dr. Sam Beckett. Dr. Beckett is working to make time travel a reality, but after a few years and lots of money, he discovers that the government is planning to pull the plug on his work. He decides to use himself as a test subject. Ever since he stepped into the Quantum Leap Accelerator, Sam has been living other people's lives in the past. But he isn't alone, as he has a little help from AI (Dean Stockwell), a hologram from his own time.

Firstly, Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell are really a great dynamic duo in Quantum Leap . The banter between Sam and Ai is one of the biggest reasons that this popular time travel show is worthy of rewatching. This is a formula for each episode, which can make it predictable but comforting at the same time. Sam finds himself in the body of someone else, and he must figure out how to help the person with a problem. Once he solves the problem, Sam then time travels to the next place. The show weaves in a lot of history and famous figures, which makes room for some great guest star appearances, like Bruce McGill as Al the Bartender in “Mirror Image” and Debbie Allen as Joanna Chapman in "Private Dancer."

7 'The Lazarus Project' (2022-2023)

Created by joe barton.

The Lazarus Project is an action-packed time travel show that, unfortunately, only had two seasons. The show stars Paapa Essiedu as George Addo and Charly Clive as Sarah. George is happily living his best life with his wife, Sarah, but he notices something strange happening—a time loop. No one else seems to realize that the time loop exists, except for George. George is contacted by a secret organization, and it is told that he is one of the few people on Earth who can recall time-reversion events. He is invited to join the Lazarus Project team. Their mission is to prevent mass extinction events by any means necessary and then do a time reset. When Sarah is in a life-threatening car accident that results in her death, George wants to go back in time to save her. However, the Lazarus Project team doesn't approve of this, and George decides to save Sarah, even if it means breaking the rules. George's actions cause a cascade of events that threaten humanity.

Unfortunately, The Lazarus Project only ran for two seasons, but it made an impression on sci-fi fans. The show explores thought-provoking questions around topics like morality, as any good sci-fi TV show should, and brings up interesting dilemmas around time travel, which some shows might hesitate to address because of their complexity. The characters of The Lazarus Project, especially George, are put in high-stakes situations, which makes each episode like a mini-action movie. This sci-fi show has also been praised for the cast's intense performances. It's thrilling to rewatch The Lazarus Project to see how George's character changes throughout the show.

The Lazarus Project

6 '12 monkeys' (2015-2018), created by travis fickett and terry matalas.

Adapted from the 1995 film directed by Terry Gilliam, which is one of the most rewatchable 90s sci-fi movies , Syfy's 12 Monkeys is a sci-fi television show starring Aaron Stanford as James Cole and Amanda Schull as Dr. Cassandra Railly. In a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2043, a group of scientists from Spearhead, led by Dr. Katrina Jones (Barbara Sukowa), discovers the abandoned Project Splinter. After many unsuccessful attempts to time travel, Dr. Jones recruits James Cole, a scavenger, to be a time traveler. She sends Cole back in time (also known as "splintering") to try to stop a pandemic of Kalavirus from happening. Cole meets Dr. Railly, a virologist, and they discover the virus was created by an organization known as the Army of the 12 Monkeys.

One of the biggest challenges for any time travel show is making it believable, and 12 Monkeys manages to do exactly that. There isn't anything off with the way the show weaves in different timelines. The elements of realism woven into the show's intricate plot are what make 12 Monkeys such a great show to rewatch. The writers put lots of hints within the dialogue, and 12 Monkeys fans love rewatching the show because they are able to catch the significance of these lines when they weren't able to before.

5 'Undone' (2019-2022)

Created by raphael bob-waksberg and kate purdy.

After she almost dies in a car accident, Alma Winograd-Diaz ( Rosa Salazar ) discovers that she can manipulate time and sees her deceased father, Jacob Winograd ( Bob Odenkirk) . Alma investigates the truth about her father’s death. This is all just the first season of Undone . In the second season, Alma and her sister, Becca ( Angelique Cabral), go through a time-bending journey into their family’s generational trauma.

Undone is done in rotoscope, and the visuals in both seasons are breathtaking. It's like artwork coming to life. Besides the breathtaking visuals, Undone' s time-bending plot is intriguing, especially so during the second season, when Becca also experiences what Alma has been going through. The best moments of the show are the chemistry between Salazar and Cabral, who brilliantly portray the Winograd-Diaz sisters. This chemistry brings out the show’s best dark humor moments, making it worth watching.

4 'The Ministry of Time' (2015-2020)

Created by pablo olivares and javier olivares.

The Ministry of Time ( El ministerio del tiempo) , also called The Time Department , is a Spanish fantasy drama in which a secret organization, known only to the Spanish Monarchy and the Prime Minister, is in charge of guarding time doors and preventing anyone from changing history through time manipulation. Julián Martínez ( Rodolfo Sancho ), a paramedic from the 21st century, is recruited by The Ministry of Time, along with Amelia Folch ( Aura Garrido ), a university student from 19th century Barcelona, and Alonso de Entrerríos ( Nacho Fresneda ), a solider from 16th century Seville, to make sure that events in history go as planned.

The Ministry of Time is a fun rewatch for history buffs, as this time travel TV show focuses on historical events in Spain and around the world. With its focus on history, there are plenty of opportunities for significant figures, like Salvador Dalí and Isabella II of Spain, to make appearances throughout the show's four seasons. It's also entertaining to watch characters from different time periods interact together, especially Julián, Amelia, and Alonso.

3 'Dark' (2017-2020)

Created by baran bo odar and jantje friese.

Dark is a German television series on Netflix about generations of families, including the Kahnwalds, Nielsens, Tiedemanns, and Dopplers, over a span of time. In the town of Winden, Germany, children go missing, and there is a connection between the missing children and a cave underneath a nuclear power plant. The show’s main families discover a wormhole within the cave, and soon their secrets unravel.

The families in Dark are very elaborate and complex, just like the show’s plot, so it's easy to miss connections during the first watch through. The cast does a remarkable job of amplifying the show’s intensity with their acting. While the intensity can make it hard to binge-watch, it’s worth rewatching to experience the emotional journey that these families go on. Watching this sci-fi thriller is an emotional rollercoaster, as there are so many layers within the stories that cross different eras.

2 'Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency'

Created by max landis.

It's rare to have a sci-fi show that has humor without being cheesy (or puny), especially one that is also a crime drama. Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency takes the absurdity and hilarity of Douglas Adams' novel of the same name to a whole new level. Elijah Wood plays Todd Brotzman, a bellhop whose life is changed forever after he stumbles upon the body of a millionaire, Patrick Spring. Detective Dirk Gently, played by Samuel Barnett , meets Todd, and the two begin to investigate the murder. However, it won't be an easy investigation as Dirk has made some enemies who want him dead.

What makes Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency so rewatchable is just how absurd it is, and the strangeness in the plot (with its eventual dash of time travel) just adds to the show's great sense of humor. Elijah Wood and Samuel Barnett make a great comedic duo, and they go above and beyond to roll with any weirdness that is thrown their way. The "villains" in Dirk Gently are just as hilarious with their wicked sense of dark humor. One of the standout "villains" is Bart Curlish ( Fiona Dourif ), a holistic assassin who believes that the universe brings people for her to kill.

WATCH ON SLING

1 'Doctor Who'

Created by sydney newman, donald wilson, and c. e. webber.

One of the most beloved time travel shows is Doctor Who , which first premiered on November 23, 1963. The Doctor is a time lord, and they have been played by multiple actors over the years, including David Tennant and Jodie Whittaker . The current actor who plays the Doctor is Ncuti Gatwa , who gave a stunning performance in his first season debut . As a time lord, the Doctor travels in a Tardis, a time-traveling machine disguised as a police box. The Doctor doesn't travel alone; they are often accompanied by companions, humans who want to see the universe. Currently, the Doctor's companion is Ruby Sunday, played by Milie Gibson .

With over 800 episodes so far, there is so much history and lore in Doctor Who . That means there is a lot to rewatch! What makes this show such a great rewatch is the variation in storytelling and iconic characters. As Doctor Who fans are well aware, time travel makes for great adventures for the Doctor and their friends, which means rewatching episodes doesn't get old at all.

The show follows the adventures of a Time Lord, “The Doctor,” who is able to regenerate, and the Doctor’s human friends. The Doctor and his companions journey through time and space in the TARDIS – a time-traveling ship shaped like a police box – saving the universe with a combination of wit, bravery, and kindness.

10 Best Space TV Shows of All Time

of 10 Best Space TV Shows of All Time

Outer space is everywhere: Not only are we physically surrounded by it, but we’re inundated with images of it, both real and fictional. Whether a story unfolds in the past, the present, or the future - in our own galaxy or one far, far away - space makes a great setting for films and TV shows.

For most of us, watching TV shows about space is the closest we’ll ever get to the astronaut experience. And most importantly, the inhuman emptiness of space forces characters to confront their private fears and self-doubts even as it inspires existential and epistemological questions that fascinate us all. It’s no wonder that show-makers all around the world never stops making space movies. With that said let’s look at the list of top space TV shows.

10. First Wave (1998-2001)

‘First Wave’ is outstanding, passionate sci-fi action drama. This is a show that lives in real time, a show that is intelligent and full of raw emotion. The performances are never flat. It is a sci-fi show that is imaginative while at the same time being very down-to-earth. In a way their reality is much like ours. While the Gua, an alien race that are both highly intelligent and extremely ruthless quietly prepares to conquer and destroy, humanity in general (with the exception of Cade, Ed, and Jordan) still don’t believe in aliens at all, pretty good premise.

9. Killjoys (2015-present)

Image result for Killjoys

‘Killjoys’ is part of SyFy’s attempt to reclaim science fiction from JJ Abrams and the CW. The show, about interstellar bounty hunters, is pretty straight forward and fun. Science fiction should have some science elements to it but Killjoys doesn’t fall into the trap of trying to be too clever. It is a fun, action oriented series first and foremost and any complications, interpersonal issues, mysteries and cool tech stuff never overwhelms the story.

8. Dark Matter (2015-2017)

Related image

It is a major challenge to take on a show set in space with the ships, technology, characters, plot, and in this case they are on the right track. This show fills a gap that was left by galactica and stargate universe and the like. Each episode has been better than the last. Strong, likable characters. Solid performances by actors you may not have seen a lot of times before. The story mixes humor, suspense and even tragedy. Sure, it’s ‘just’ traditional space opera. But space opera deftly handled, to the point where it becomes absolutely compelling.

7. Bitten (2014-2016)

Image result for Bitten

The sets and location shots are wonderful particularly the Toronto interiors, the family estate and the village street scenes. The attention to detail – NY plates on the cars, American flags flying, newspaper racks on the sidewalks & individualistic costuming all add to the sense of authenticity. It is based on the Women of the Otherworld series of books by author Kelley Armstrong.

6. Wynonna Earp (2016-present)

Image result for Wynonna Earp

If you like shows with action, the supernatural element & a western twist, I’d recommend giving this show a try. There are some funny scene which are always good, so the show is not so serious and the character have a sense of humor which makes the show look more promising. Melanie Scrofano is great as a gun-slinging demon killer. The villains are interesting unlike some TV-shows where they are just bland. The show doesn’t contain too much violence/gore either. The background score is perfect.

5. Lexx (1997-2002)

Image result for Lexx

Most science fiction deals with characters who are altruistic or malevolent, and have stories that are simple, with good guys defending against bad guys. ‘Lexx’ is different, in that it explores the amoral side of humanity not by showing these usually undesirable traits not just in minor characters, but in the main characters, in the crew of the Lexx itself. The very story is just hilariously cool, as we see the talking spaceship, Lexx, which is in fact a living insect, but a huge one and unbearably droopy and always praising Stanley Tweedle, an unlikely hero, who owns it and is always willing Xev. This is a serial for adult but also for very clever watchers. Watch it by all means, as you have never seen anything like this and will hardly see any other.

 4. Being Human (2011-2014)

Image result for being human 2011-2014

Being Human is a breath of fresh air for the whole “Creatures of the Night” genre. If you think it’s just another Twilight rip-off I’m gonna stop you right there. Don’t avoid a show like this because you think you are above the “vampire” trend. It’s not about a vampire and a werewolf, it’s about trying to be normal, kind and morally acceptable under extremely abnormal and immoral conditions. Can they rise above and choose the high ground or will they be trapped in their violent natures, forever miserable.

3. Orphan Black (2013–2017)

best space travel tv shows

Imagine the shock one has to go through when one comes to know that s/he is a clone, and that many such clones exist in the world as we know it as a part of the larger plot. When Sarah Manning, a con artist comes to know of her real identity, of being Beth Childs, a police detective, the world comes crashing upon her as she uncovers the clones’ origin, the political-corporate nexus, the secret surveillance, and the antagonistic religious factions who are on a killing spree to eliminate all such clones. The series progresses with Sarah’s last-ditch efforts to avoid any possible abduction either by the clone killers or creators and also to protect her daughter – the only clone child to date. This thought-provoking series has its ample dose of twists, and revelations, along with some multi-layered performances which will take you for a ride.

2. The Expanse (2015-present)

best space travel tv shows

This show takes us 200 years ahead of time. The whole of the Solar System is colonized by humans and is divided into three major groups- Earth, Mars and Outer Planets Alliance. An incident involving an Officer of the ice hauler results in the events that might lead to the destabilization of the peace maintained in the Solar System. 1. Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994)

Image result for Star Trek: The Next Generation

It’s a show that had very well written stories, and each week there was a different hero from the no named ensign, to the captain himself. Several of the stories developed into true sagas and much of the plots involved many of the original cast. In this day and age of terrorism, and threats of war, it would be nice if we could apply more of the philosophies from the possible future of this series.

TOP 10 Must-see Netflix Space Series

TOP 10 Must-see Netflix Space Series

Netflix is one of the most popular streaming services today, with a vast library of movies and shows to accommodate all tastes. That is why we decided to take a good look into its archives and new arrivals to offer you the best Netflix Space series, in our opinion. So, let’s get started.

The most popular Netflix space series

These series about space on Netflix rank so high because they combine several genres, feature excellent computer graphics, and come with exciting plots. Some are perfect for light watching with the whole family, while others will deeply immerse you in the atmosphere of space technology and alien worlds. We hope you will find something to your liking.

Lost in Space (2018-2021) IMDb 7.3

Netflix Space series- Lost in Space

The Lost in Space Netflix series is a remake of the 1998 science fiction film of the same name. The story takes place in 2046. Earth’s resources are depleted, and humanity is looking for shelter on other planets. The Robinson family’s ship is thrown off course and crash-lands a few light-years from its intended landing site on an unknown planet. Professor John Robinson, his family and the pilot, are trying to survive in the new environment. The storyline is based on the young Will Robinson’s friendship with a robot that initially acts hostile but then saves the heroes’ lives more than once.

To be fair, the remake is even better than the original. This is a real family series that keeps the viewer hooked for all three seasons. It has everything to justify a high ranking — dynamic plot, realistic graphics, excellent cast. Unfortunately, new episodes of Lost in Space are not expected. The third season was the final one, and the history of the Robinson family is now complete. If you haven’t seen it yet, watch these exciting Netflix space series with the whole family.

NightFlyers ( 2018) IMDb 5.8

Netflix NightFlyers

These Netflix space TV series are based on the novel of the same name by George R. R. Martin and the 1987 film adaptation. The action takes place in 2093. A group of scientists is sent on a Night Flyer spacecraft beyond the solar system in search of alien civilizations. When horrifying and violent events start happening on board, the crew begins to doubt themselves, each other, and their reclusive captain. They soon realize that the real horror is not in outer space — it is already on their ship.

Nightflyers has been critically acclaimed for its eye-catching visual style and will especially appeal to fans of the sci-fi horror genre set in the confined space of a spaceship.

Another Life (2019)  IMDb 5.2

Netflix space series - Another Life

The story of Another Life begins with an unidentified flying object in the form of a large Moebius strip that lands on Earth and forms a huge tower of crystalline structure. Scientist Eric Wallace, employed by the United States Interstellar Command (USIC), is trying to make contact with the tower.

Meanwhile, his wife, Captain Nico Breckinridge, is sent on the spaceship Salvare (Latin for Savior) to determine the artefact’s origin and find the alien civilization that sent it. The Salvare can travel faster than the speed of light, and the crew is in suspended animation (called soma in the series) for most of the flight. However, after a navigational error, Niko wakes up from hypersleep and finds that Salvara is in danger.

These Netflix space series were released in July 2019 and ranked high, so it was renewed for a second season, released in October 2021. If you love the mix of space travel and sci-fi drama, Another Life is for you.

Away (2020) IMDb 6.6

Netflix space series away

This Netflix space series is focused on Emma Green and her husband Matt Logan, American astronauts training to become a part of an international team for a three-year mission to Mars. Shortly before lift-off, Matt is taken off the flight due to illness, and Emma decides to leave her husband and daughter for a greater purpose. The three-year mission takes off from the Moon; however, several crew members distrust Emma’s ability to command due to her response to a crisis situation.

The series is essentially a melodrama in a space wrapper. Its main message is that if people want to achieve the impossible, they need each other. If you are a fan of this genre, as well as the acting of the inimitable Hilary Swank, then Away is for you.

Space Force (2020) IMDb 6.7

Space Force series

Space series on Netflix can be not only full of danger and drama, but can also make viewers laugh. The plot of Space Force tells the story of US Air Force General Mark Naird, who dreams of leading the US Air Force but instead becomes the Space Force commander. Now he must begin the exploration of the moon and ensure America’s dominance in space, but all his actions are accompanied by failures. Much of the series’ success was ensured by the star cast: Steve Carell, John Malkovich, Ben Schwartz, Diana Silvers, and Alexei Vorobyov. Decide for yourself how good Space Force turned out by watching both seasons.

Best Korean space series on Netflix

Netflix has shows produced not only in the United States but also in other countries. In September 2021, South Korean filmmakers blew up the fans of the survival genre with the Squid Game series, and in December, they released a very solid new space series on Netflix.

The Silent Sea (2021)  IMDb 6.9

Netflix The Silent Sea

The name “Silent Sea” comes from the Sea of Tranquility on the Moon. The story is about a manned mission to retrieve samples from a lunar research base. The land of the future is suffering from desertification, which is why drinking water consumption is strictly rationed. A scientific team is sent to the abandoned Balkhe lunar station, where 117 people died as a result of an accident five years ago, to understand the causes of the tragedy and find a solution to save the Earth.

Basically, The Silent Sea is science fiction with a touch of thriller and mystery. The 8-episode series is slow-paced but has enough intrigue and danger to satisfy patient viewers.

Best sci-fi series on Netflix

Sci-Fi does not always include a space theme, but we could not ignore these two magnificent series about our hypothetical future, especially since they touch on the subject of space.

Black Mirror (2011-2019) IMDb 8.8

Netflix SciFi Black Mirror

This British mini-series warns us that a future where we lose our humanity in technology is more than possible, and it’s not as far away as we think. The Black Mirror series is not connected by one storyline; each tells its own short story, which could well turn into a full-fledged Hollywood movie in the genre of social utopia, sometimes with a touch of satire and sometimes horror. The series will impress even a sophisticated sci-fi fan and perhaps make you think that not a single, even the most progressive, technology will make us better until we ourselves want to change.

The series consists of 5 seasons, including 22 stories. Fans of Netflix space series will be especially interested in episode 1 of season 4, telling about the USS Calister starship, which is a kind of homage to Star Trek.

Altered Carbon (2018-2020) IMDb 7.9

Netflix Altered Carbon

This is one of the best space sci-fi series on Netflix, and it takes us to the 27th century, when humanity’s dream of colonizing deep space has long become a reality. People conquered the solar system and went beyond it, but they never invented the technology of instantaneous movement in space, so flights to other planets take decades.

However, there is an alternative solution — transferring human consciousness from one body to another. Consciousness is stored in special stacks and, if necessary, loaded into the body, which acts as a carrier. This forms a special class of wealthy centenarians who copy their consciousness to a backup medium, thus moving between bodies. The body of one of them, Lawrence Bancroft, is killed, and he revives dangerous mercenary Takeshi Kovacs to find the killer.

The series is based on the book by Richard K. Morgan and is a nuclear mixture of cyberpunk, noir, detective, action, and science fiction genres, so it has found a lot of fans.

Best Netflix animated series about space

Some might think that animation and Sci-Fi are incompatible, but only until they watch these two Netflix space cartoon series.

Love, death and robots (2019-) IMDb 8.4

Netflix Love, death and robots

If you liked Black Mirror , then you will definitely like Love, Death and Robots . The series is an anthology (each episode has its own story) in the genres of science fiction, horror, thriller, and dark humour. We assure you, you have never seen cartoons like this before. The series is very diverse, both in terms of storylines and graphics. You will see both downright cartoonish episodes and those hardly distinguishable from a real movie.

The project was inspired and executive produced by Oscar-winning director David Fincher ( The Game, Fight Club, Alien 3, Panic Room, Zodiac, House of Cards ). Love, Death and Robots has been out for three seasons already, and we will surely have a fourth one. If you like thrilling science fiction flavoured with black humour, this collection is for you. Just remember to keep kids away from the screen, as Love, Death and Robots — are cartoons for adults.

Apollo 10½  (2022) IMDb 7.3

Netflix Apollo 10½

A nostalgic adult Netflix space series directed by Richard Linklater that brings childhood fantasies to life. Stan, a fourth grader from Houston, comes from a large family, is a mediocre student, and leads a wholly unremarkable life. Everything changes when, in the midst of the 1969 space race, two NASA experts turn to him for help — to become the first man on the moon before Apollo 11 with Neil Armstrong goes there. The lad accepts the offer, and the mission is called Apollo 10½ . The director leaves it up to the viewer to decide whether Stan ends up flying into space because the main message of the series is not about going to space. It sort of returns the adult audience to their own childhood and asks the question anyone would like answered: what happened to our childhood dreams?

As with Waking Life and The Blurred , Linklater rotoscoped real actors into animated counterparts. That is why fans of Zachary Levi, Jack Black, and Glen Powell can enjoy their acting in a non-trivial manner.

The bottom line

Netflix considers the ratio of viewership and cost to be key factors when deciding whether to renew the series or cancel it. That is why some of the above series were cancelled. However, this does not make these shows bad, and they still have their fans. Perhaps, after reading our list, you will join them. And we will continue to tell you about new Netflix space series worth checking out.

Apollo 11 - one of the best space movies

Looking for a space movie or TV show that’s a bit more realistic? Below, we look at the best space movies and TV series that you can watch via streaming services like Disney Plus , HBO Max , and others. These movies and series depict realistic space flight with past, present, and future technology.

Apollo: missions to the moon.

Editor’s note: We’ll regularly update this list of the best space movies and space TV shows as new ones are released.

2001 a space odyssey

While we are over two decades past the date of this movie, you should try to think of it as an alternate timeline when we didn’t stop going to the moon after Apollo 17. Director Stanley Kubrick gave audiences a look into that possible future, where you could take regular trips to a massive space station, and later to the moon. However, it’s the final sequence that most people remember. You can check out the movie, and its sequel 2010, on HBO Max.

The Right Stuff (Movie)

right stuff space movies 1

The Right Stuff movie was based on Thomas Wolfe’s non-fiction book on the early days of the US space program. This excellent film concentrates its narrative on the test pilots of the late 1940s and early 1950s, many of whom went to NASA as the first Mercury astronauts. Look for an excellent Sam Shepard playing test pilot Chuck Yeager, and Dennis Quaid and Ed Harris as astronauts Gordon Cooper and John Glenn, respectively. You can watch this excellent space movie free on the Roku Channel.

the right stuff space tv shows

Disney Plus, in collaboration with National Geographic, adapted The Right Stuff into a TV series. This docudrama focuses on the original Mercury Seven astronauts (no Chuck Yeager here) and concludes with the first manned US space flight. While it only lasted one season, it’s still worth watching.

Sandra Bullock is alone in orbit in this modern-day space movie. Her shuttle gets hit by some orbiting space debris caused by a Russian rocket, and she’s lost her partner (George Clooney). Can she survive long enough to get back to Earth?

If you want the real, unfiltered story behind the moon landing 50 years ago, check out this recently released documentary available to stream on Hulu. When we say “unfiltered,” we mean it; this film only uses footage, taken from over 11,000 hours of film and video, that was made as part of the Apollo 11 mission, including some 70mm film previously not seen by the public.

There’s no narration, interviews, or special effects to recreate any scenes. It’s about as close as you can get to being a part of the original flight. That makes it one of the best, if not the best, realistic space movies.

From The Earth to the Moon

From the Earth to the Moon - space tv show

After starring in Apollo 13, Tom Hanks extended his time in space with this 1998 HBO mini-series. This 12-episode series chronicles the history of US space exploration, from the founding of NASA to the first Apollo missions, all the way to the end with the last manned lunar landing with Apollo 17.

Hanks directed the first episode of this series, and wrote or co-wrote several others. Many well-known actors play roles in this mini-series, including Tony Goldwyn, Bryan Cranston, Cary Elwes, Gary Cole, Sally Field, and many more. It’s perhaps the best TV series to depict the actual events of the Apollo space program. It’s available to stream with an HBO Max subscription.

For All Mankind Apple TV Plus shows space

Apple TV Plus is the home for this excellent alternate history, exploring what might have happened if the Soviet Union had landed on the moon first instead of the United States. It also shows how the US and the USSR might have continued to visit the moon, rather than end their exploration in the early 1970s.

apple tv plus logo 1

National Geographic’s Apollo: Missions to the Moon is dedicated to the Apollo program’s 12 years and 12 missions. The documentary relies exclusively on archival footage of the astronauts and crews who put men on the moon. Apollo: Missions to the Moon covers the entire decades-long program, not just the days of the Apollo 11 mission. It’s a chance to relive the space race through the cameras of news teams that were there.

Honorable mentions

Here are a few more space TV shows and space movies that didn’t make our final list

  • Stargate SG-1 : Netflix has this fun action series, which grounds the high-end alien tech with some Earthbound humor and settings.
  • Space Force : This comedy series is set mainly on Earth, but occasionally goes into space and even the Moon.
  • Stowaway : This movie shows how a trip to Mars is made more complicated by an unexpected passenger.
  • Space 1999 : This show, inspired greatly by 2001, does have the silly premise of the moon being blasted out of Earth’s orbit.
  • Halo : The newly launched space-based TV show, based on the popular video game, has some realism in terms of its space travel.

These are the best space movies and space TV shows, in our opinion, although there are plenty of other great ones on offer. We’ll update this post with new ones once they are released.

Labour are warning voters against complacency at the polls on 4 July as the party says "change will only happen if you vote for it".

In an article for The Observer, Labour campaign coordinator Pat McFadden said the election debate was "in danger" of being "consumed by polls" and the idea that the outcome is "somehow pre-determined".

"No way is this election a done deal. The headlines about the clutch of MRP polls disguise a huge level of uncertainty," he said.

The public need to think about whether they want five more years of Conservative rule or "the chance to rebuild with Labour," said Mr McFadden.

He branded Tory warnings against a Labour "supermajority" a "cynical voter suppression strategy".

"The reason the Tories are talking down their prospects is to try to persuade swing voters that they either don't need to vote or, because of their argument the result is decided, to persuade voters they can afford to vote for one of the minor parties where the seat is a Labour/Tory battle," he said.

A Labour win would "put Brexit in peril" and see Sir Keir Starmer try to overturn the vote that changed the country eight years ago, Rishi Sunak has said.

The Conservative campaign suggested Labour have pledged to negotiate a new deal "without telling the public what they would accept in return".

It cited experts as warning that Sir Keir's party would have to make "considerable concessions" to meet its manifesto pledge to deepen ties with the UK's European neighbours.

In a statement on the anniversary of the Brexit vote, Mr Sunak said Sir Keir "has never believed we can succeed as a sovereign country and has tried to overturn the result time and time again".

He said the Labour leader has committed to "years more wrangling the EU" and abandoning the country's "hard-won freedoms".

"Keir Starmer would recommit us to free movement of EU citizens, taking thousands more illegal migrants and binding our businesses again in Brussels red tape," he said.

"It would be a betrayal pure and simple of the public's wishes by a party with no faith in Britain and no plan for our future as an independent nation."

Meanwhile, business secretary Kemi Badenoch accused Labour of rubbishing facts and promoting "dodgy forecasts" about UK growth.

Sir Keir earlier denied that Labour has plans to rejoin the EU, after Ms Badenoch told The Telegraph that he would put Brexit at risk if he became prime minister.

"We are not re-joining the EU, we are not re-joining the single market or the customs union," the Labour leader said.

A top Conservative official has reportedly taken a leave of absence amid allegations that they placed bets on the timing of the general election on 4 July.

The allegations were published in The Sunday Times , which reported that the official is being investigated over claims they placed "dozens of bets".

A Conservative spokesman said: "As instructed by the Gambling Commission, we are not permitted to discuss any matters related to any investigation with the subject or any other persons."

Sir Keir Starmer has branded attacks by the veterans minister on his Labour electoral opponent "sad and desperate".

Mr Mercer, the Tory candidate for Plymouth Moor View, accused his political rival Fred Thomas of lying about his military record after a hustings event earlier this week.

In a series of posts to the X, the minister questioned whether Mr Thomas had served in combat missions while serving as a Royal Marine.

He suggested the Labour candidate had misrepresented his service "for political gain".

Asked about Mr Mercer's comments, Sir Keir said it was "sad desperation" from the veterans' minister. "It's desperate."

The Labour leader said his remarks underlined that the Conservative Party is "party first through and through".

Labour said Mr Thomas was a "decorated ex-Royal Marine" who was unable to discuss his military service due to its "highly sensitive" nature.

Mr Thomas said he was "proud of having served my country for seven years, including overseas on operations".

Here are all the candidates for the Plymouth Moor View constituency:

  • Shaun Hooper  - Reform UK
  • Sarah Martin  - Liberal Democrats
  • Johnny Mercer - Conservatives
  • Georgia Nelson  - Green Party
  • Fred Thomas - Labour

Union boss Sharon Graham has said she does not agree with Labour's fiscal rules and the party should borrow more to invest.

Speaking to Sky News'  Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips  in an interview that will be broadcast in full tomorrow, the Unite general secretary said other countries with growing economies have a larger debt-to-GDP ratio than the UK, "so there is wiggle room".

Rachel Reeves , the shadow chancellor, has promised to retain the Tories' commitment that debt as a proportion of GDP must be on track to fall in five years if Labour win the election on 4 July.

She has ruled out borrowing to fund day-to-day spending, saying her focus will be on reforms to grow the economy.

But Ms Graham said: "I don't agree with Rachel Reeves in terms of what has been said about the plans on growth.

"If you look at other countries - in France, their debt to GDP is 112%. In America, where the economy's growing, it's 130% debt to GDP. Ours is around about 99%. We have wiggle room. Give Britain a break."

The union leader said that workers "are literally hurting beyond anything that you could comprehend" due to the cost of living crisis.

She added: "We need the straitjacket off a little bit, get some wiggle room there.

"Borrowing to invest is not the same as other borrowing. It's borrowing to invest."

You can watch the full interview with Sharon Graham on Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips from 8.30am tomorrow morning on Sky News.

Sir Keir Starmer said he always suspected Boris Johnson's relationship with the truth "would bring him down"- as he revealed how he "set a trap" for the ex-prime minister over the partygate scandal.

In an interview with The Guardian, the Labour leader said he "couldn't care less" about the insults Mr Johnson hurled at him over the despatch box, including when the then PM called him a "pointless human bollard".

"I'm not saying I have great insight, but I felt his character would bring him down," he told the newspaper.

"I thought, there's a guy who is detached from the truth. Whether he's lying or not, it doesn't matter to him."

Sir Keir then laid out the specific way he "set a trap" for Mr Johnson to catch him out over the Downing Street parties scandal, according to The Guardian.

Scarlett Maguire, a pollster with JL Partners, says focus groups run by the firm in Rishi Sunak's constituency show that the D-Day blunder and the recent betting scandal in the Tory party have cut through to voters.

Both issues have been "incredibly damaging" for the prime minister, she says.

Ms Maguire said one voter told researchers that the betting scandal "showed a complete disregard for voters".

"They were saying the impression was that it was just like Partygate. It was indicative of a political class and this particular political party that takes voters a bit for a ride and takes their votes for granted," she says.

"That sense was something that came through very strongly."

Ms Maguire said these issues mean voters could perceive Mr Sunak as being "out of control".

However she pointed out that the public also "do not like the sound of a Labour majority", and there's an "appetite" to prevent this.

"It about whether that works and about whether people actually think 'you know what? I am really cross with the main parties... I'm going to do more of a protest vote'."

Next up on the show is pollster Scarlett Maguire , director at JL Partners.

She's asked first about the big polling story of the campaign, which has been the rise of Reform UK support in the UK.

Asked if the Conservatives should be worried about this, Ms Maguire says she is "sceptical" that Reform could end up with a greater share of the vote than the Tories - in part because they are not standing in every seat.

However she notes the rise of Reform has been "the defining feature of this campaign - or at least the only real action we've seen in the polls".

Ms Maguire says Rishi Sunak's decision to call the election while 20 points down in the polls was unprecedented.

"He desperately needed a campaign where he could win back those voters that started voting Reform and also win back those Conservatives that were now telling pollsters they don't know. So far, he's not done either," she says.

Next up is a discussion with the Politics Hub panel on JK Rowling's accusation in The Times newspaper that the Labour party is "abandoning women".

In a 2,000-word essay, the author said she will "struggle to support" Labour if Sir Keir Starmer keeps his current stance on gender recognition.

Sir Keir has defended Labour's record on gender equality in response, saying he was "proud" of his party's history on the subject.

Charlie Rowley , former special adviser to Michael Gove, says the issue is a "sticky wicket" for Labour, but he adds that there are "so many other issues in society" that require focus.

"Party leaders shouldn't be getting caught up in the minutiae of this kind of conversation," he says.

Meanwhile, Ava Santina Evans, political correspondent at PoliticsJOE, says Labour advisers are worried the issue will "ramp up just before polling day".

She adds it's unfair to trans people in the UK "to experience this sort of rhetoric before the election".

"This election really is a lot to do with the politicisation of people's bodies," she says.
