The Men’s Selection Committee announced the squad for the upcoming IDFC First Bank 5-match T20I series against Australia scheduled to start from 23 rd  November, 2023 in Visakhapatnam.

India’s squad:  Suryakumar Yadav (Captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad (vice-captain), Ishan Kishan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Shivam Dubey, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Avesh Khan, Mukesh Kumar

Note:  Shreyas Iyer will join the squad as vice-captain for the last two T20Is in Raipur and Bengaluru.

When does it start?

The ODI World Cup win is still fresh but the cricket machine rolls on, and India host Australia for the first of five T20s beginning Thursday night. The tour will last 11 days with the fifth match played on December 3.

November 23: First T20, Vishakhapatnam

November 26: Second T20, Thiruvananthapuram

November 28: Third T20, Guwahati

December 1: Fourth T20, Raipur

December 3: Fifth T20, Bengaluru

All matches start 12.30am AEDT on the following date

Why is this series relevant?

It's a fair question, coming so hot on the heels of a fantastic 50-over World Cup. And the cheap answer would be to point to Indian cricket's insatiable appetite and the associated TV dollars it brings in. But dig a little deeper and with an ICC event now every 12 months, it is only 195 days until the T20 World Cup starts in June.

That tournament will be held in the Caribbean and the USA and, while there's no denying this series is opportunistic scheduling, it does offer an opportunity for fringe players to stake their claim in the cauldron of international cricket. After all, Australia is only scheduled to play 11 T20s before that World Cup – five here, three against the West Indies at home in February and another three in New Zealand in March. 

For the Aussies, this is another chance for a look at the likes of Matt Short, Aaron Hardie and Tanveer Sangha who are all newcomers to international cricket, as well as a notable chance for Steve Smith to press his case as a T20 opener following his Big Bash fireworks last summer.

So it's not a full-strength Aussie side?

No, but you could take a view that actually adds to the appeal for this series. England hung around in Australia for a white-ball series they were thoroughly uninterested in after their T20 World Cup win last year, but this Australia squad has a fresh injection of personnel.

A host of players including fast bowling trio Pat Cummins, Mitch Starc and Josh Hazlewood have been rested from the series, as have allrounders Mitch Marsh and Cameron Green.

David Warner was initially named in the squad but has been withdrawn, meaning another opportunity for allrounder Aaron Hardie.

From the playing XI that won the ODI World Cup, Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith and Adam Zampa are all included in this squad.

Just how many of those feature in the opening match remains to be seen, with Head in particular having heartily enjoyed the post-match celebrations following his player-of-the-final award for a century in the run chase.

World Cup squad members Sean Abbott and Marcus Stoinis are also staying on for the T20s, as is Tanveer Sangha, who travelled with the World Cup squad as a reserve player.

In addition, coming in fresh are Matthew Wade, who skippers the team, Jason Behrendorff, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Matt Short and Kane Richardson.

Head coach Andrew McDonald also flew home on Wednesday with assistant Andre Borovec to take over for the T20s.

Hang on, didn't Matthew Wade retire?

Talk of the veteran wicketkeeper's international retirement has been proven premature! Matthew Wade, who himself considered his international career over 12 months ago after the T20 World Cup on home soil, is back to captain Australia.

Wade is in the job on an interim basis only, taking over from Mitch Marsh who captained for three matches in South Africa in August. The Tasmanian has not played international cricket since that T20 World Cup last year.

Australia have been without a permanent T20 captain since Aaron Finch retired in February, and do not appear in any rush to appoint one.

How about the Indians?

Plenty of time to lick their wounds for the beaten Indians with only three of their World Cup squad members included in their 16-player group for this series.

Suryakumar Yadav is the only member of the playing XI from the ODI World Cup final to stay on, and will captain the side. Squad members Ishan Kishan and Prasidh Krishna are also in the group while top-order bat Shreyas Iyer will join them for the final two matches.

How's the time difference?

Honestly, it's not the best for Aussie fans on the east coast. While the World Cup saw the vast majority of games start at 7.30pm, these are shorter T20 matches played entirely in the evening, which means 12.30am start times in Sydney and Melbourne.

Head-to-head

It seems low, but there have only been 27 T20 internationals between Australia and India since the first in 2007. India holds the advantage 15-10 (with one washout, and one abandoned before a ball was bowled).

Of the 10 times they've met in India in this format, the home side has won six of them.

Australia has only won a multi-game T20 series in India once, in February 2019 when Glenn Maxwell starred with 56 and 113no as they won 2-0.

Last time they met

India won a three-game series 2-1 in September last year in a series best remembered for Cameron Green's breakout as a white-ball player. The tall Western Australian scored 61 from 30 and 52 from 21 as an opener in the first and third games of this series, which no doubt helped him land a sweet A$3.15m price at the IPL auction just a few weeks later.

Recent form

Australia underperformed in the T20 World Cup on home soil 12 months ago, and have only played one T20 series since with all the focus leading up to the just-concluded ODI World Cup. The T20s they did play went well – a 3-0 whitewash of the Proteas in South Africa in September.

Mitchell Marsh, who captained the side, was a beast with 186 runs across the three games, while Travis Head put on 115. Tim David and Matt Short both finished with strike rates north of 200.

Sean Abbott claimed eight wickets and had an economy rate of just 7.

But Australia are on a six-game winning streak in the T20 format, beating Sri Lanka, Ireland and Afghanistan in the group stage at last year's T20 World Cup before the South Africa series. You have to go back to 2019 to find a longer win-streak in the format for Australia.

‘A strong spin option’: Australia name Todd Murphy in Test squad for tour of India

Todd Murphy has bowled his way into Australia’s Test squad with the Victorian one of four spinners selected for next month’s tour to India. Uncapped at Test level, Murphy has been named alongside fellow tweakers Nathan Lyon, Ashton Agar and Mitchell Swepson.

Matthew Renshaw and Peter Handscomb have also earned call ups with Marcus Harris left out, as Australia try to win a series in India for the first time since 2004. Captain Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Scott Boland and Lance Morris are the five quicks, with Australia preparing to play as many as three in some Tests and as few as one in others.

Starc will miss the first Test in Nagpur on 9 February with a finger injury and will join the squad afterwards, while allrounder Cameron Green will tour from the outset with his broken finger.

“We have selected a squad that provides the depth and flexibility required to adapt depending on the conditions we may encounter,” chief selector George Bailey said.

Such is Australia’s stability, Murphy is one of only two players in the group not to have played Test cricket before. The offspinner impressed on last year’s Australia A tour of Sri Lanka, and stayed on as a reserve bowler for the main Test tour afterwards. He has since starred in the Sheffield Shield, with 14 wickets at an average of 17.71 this summer.

“Todd Murphy has progressed quickly having impressed in domestic cricket and recently with Australia A,” Bailey said. “With those performances Todd has emerged as a strong spin option.”

Those returns have also impressed the likes of Lyon, with Murphy a genuine chance to play as a second or third spinner in India. Left-armer Agar will likely begin the tour as the first-choice backup with his ability to turn the ball the other way, but Murphy remains an option.

“There’s no secret that I’m very impressed by Todd Murphy,” Lyon said last month. “I have done a lot of work with Todd, been around the Sixers with him. He’s definitely put his hand up.

“I first bowled with him two years ago in the Shield bubble ... He’s got the skillset there. It’s just about him learning the craft tactically and mentally and just really honing in on that skillset of bowling an unbelievable stock ball.”

Australia could make further changes to the squad between the second Test in Delhi and the the third in Dharamsala, with a lengthy gap between the matches.

IND v AUS 2022 squad: Full T20I team lists and injury updates for India v Australia

India will play a three-match T20I series against Australia beginning September 20 – here’s the full squad list for IND v AUS 2022, including team news and injury updates.

India, who could not make it past the Super Four stage at the 2022 Asia Cup , would be looking to get back to winning ways when they welcome defending T20 world champions Australia. India opted for a full-strength squad , with Rohit Sharma leading the side. KL Rahul will act as his deputy, with Suryakumar Yadav and Virat Kohli also expected to feature heavily.

Axar Patel, Deepak Hooda and Dinesh Karthik, all of whom played intermittent roles at the Asia Cup, have been included. Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant also make the cut. On the bowling front, Mohammed Shami has been recalled, with Harshal Patel and Jasprit Bumrah also being passed fit after missing the Asia Cup due to injury.

Australia, too, selected most of their first-choice players. Aaron Finch, who recently retired from ODI cricket , will be leading the side. Pat Cummins returns after being rested for the ODI series against New Zealand and alongside Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc is part of a formidable bowling unit.

David Warner, though, has been accorded a break. That said, Australia have plenty of quality in their ranks, with Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, Mitchell Marsh and Tim David capable of being match-winners.

The series will start on September 20 at Mohali. The 2nd and 3rd T20Is are scheduled to be held at Nagpur and Hyderabad on September 23 and 25, respectively.

Rookie‘s call-up, veteran’s recall confirmed as spin-heavy Aussie Test squad for India revealed

Australia has named a four-pronged spin attack for its four-Test tour of India, including 22-year-old spin sensation Todd Murphy who is in line to make his debut.

An 18-man squad for the tour, beginning on February 9, was revealed on Thursday with Murphy included with fellow spinners Nathan Lyon, Ashton Agar and Mitch Swepson.

Like Agar, batsman Matt Renshaw retains his place in the squad after being called up for the New Year’s Test. Peter Handscomb, a veteran of sub-continental conditions is recalled and in line to make his first Test appearance since 2019 — however News Corp reports he could be in doubt because of an injury suffered playing park cricket on Tuesday.

“Todd Murphy has progressed quickly having impressed in domestic cricket and recently with Australia A. With those performances Todd has emerged as a strong spin option,”chief Australian selector George Bailey said.

“Selection in this squad also provides another opportunity to spend time alongside Nathan Lyon and assistant coach Daniel Vettori in India which will be invaluable to his development.

“... Peter Handscomb deserves his place back in the squad,” Bailey said. “His domestic form has been strong recently and Pete has proven he can perform at Test level.

“His experience against spin on the subcontinent is valuable and he is also an exceptionally good close to the wicket catcher.”

Victorian Murphy is viewed as the second-best spinner in Australia, according to News Corp , and could play alongside Lyon should selectors choose to name two in the best XI.

But former Aussie paceman Michael Kasprowicz fears debuting Murphy could be dangerous for the 22-year-old.

He instead believes Swepson, who he watched while commentating of Australia’s tour of Pakistan last year, will “go really well if the conditions and opportunity presents itself”.

Swepson and Murphy are likely bidding for Agar’s spot in the side after his wicketless performance at the SCG against South Africa — although Bailey has suggested he is a strong starting option.

“Ashton Agar continues to impress following his comeback in Sydney and we believe left-arm finger spin will play an important role in Indian conditions,” Bailey said.

Handscomb, if fit, and Renshaw will provide batting options with Cameron Green racing the clock to return from his broken finger, while Mitchell Starc will miss at least the first Test in Nagpur beginning on February 9.

Uncapped quick Lance Morris retains his place in the squad and could be a chance for an international debut.

Opener Marcus Harris, who featured in the squad over the summer but did not play, and spinner Adam Zampa were among the unlucky omissions.

The question of whether to blood Murphy, play Agar or ignore a second spinner altogether remains the largest question hanging over Aussie selection.

“Don’t do it (debut Murphy) in India,” Kasprowicz told the Nine papers . “They are the best players of spin in the world. There’s a temptation when you turn up to a spinning wicket … you end up finding that bowlers try too hard for their wickets.

“This whole search for spin (in India) ... there’s a bit of a myth about that. The best spinner ever was Warnie. His record in India wasn’t fabulous. He’s bowling against the best players of spin in the world in their conditions. That was the other side of it. As far as spin bowlers, you don’t need to overthink it. You’ve got to almost simplify it.

“I spoke to (ex-Indian coach) Ravi Shastri during the IPL years ago. I asked what’s the secret in India in the subcontinent. He said it’s all about accuracy. He said it’s not about the flight or dip … it’s about getting it in that right area and the pitch naturally gives you variation. I’m excited about this series because someone like Nathan Lyon has been there and done it all before.

“I think Travis Head’s off-spin is pretty cool. If he is coming in for five or 10 overs in a day, if the wicket is turning, he’s going to do a good job.”

Australia needs just one win in India to lock up a spot in the World Test Championship final this June in England.

Big names miss out as Australia reveal squad for T20 World Cup

A host of big names have missed selection as Australia announced their 15-player group for next month's ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Veteran batter Steve Smith, young gun Jake Fraser-McGurk, experienced seamer Jason Behrendorff and all-rounder Matt Short all miss the cut as the 2021 T20 World Cup champions sprung some surprises when revealing their squad for the four-week tournament in the West Indies and the USA.

Left-arm spinner Ashton Agar wins a recall despite not having played a T20I since the last T20 World Cup on Australian soil in 2022, while Marcus Stoinis, Tim David and Cameron Green join Glenn Maxwell in the final squad as all-rounder options.

Mitchell Marsh will captain the side, with his promotion to full-time T20I confirmed by Australia alongside the squad announcement.

Selection chair George Bailey believes Australia have a well-balanced squad and is confident of a strong showing in the ninth edition of the T20 World Cup.

“This is an experienced squad with extensive World Cup experience that offers a variety of structures and covers the scenarios the panel believes will factor in the West Indies with the unique nature of the venues and our opponents," Bailey said. “It’s great to have Ashton Agar back into the squad following a spate of unfortunate and untimely injuries.   “We believe Ashton can play a critical role in this tournament along with Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Cam Green and Mitch Marsh in complementing our front-line attack options.  “The batting options available allow a tailored approach to each venue and opponent.”

Bailey noted that the squad size of 15 left many in-form players unlucky to miss selection.

“Steve Smith, Matt Short, Jason Behrendorff, Aaron Hardie, Spencer Johnson and Xavier Bartlett were all part of long conversations, along with several others, including Jake Fraser-McGurk who is yet to play T20 International cricket but continues to impress and is developing rapidly," Bailey said. “Being constrained to a squad of 15 for World Cups is always a challenge given the different scenarios and options we’d like to cover.   “We will continue monitoring several players who have missed out on this preliminary squad and note that if we need to change this squad, we have the option to do so over the coming month in accordance with ICC regulations.   “Ultimately the balance of the final 15 needs to provide the best chance of being successful in this campaign.”

Rohit Sharma mistimed a ball towards the covers, where Travis Head took an absolutely brilliant take.

While Marsh has been performing the role as interim captain of Australia's T20I side for much of the last 12 months, the T20 World Cup will be his first major tournament as skipper.

"It's been an immense privilege to play for my country and now an even greater honour to lead the squad to a World Cup," Marsh said,

"We have had some strong success in recent times and I am hopeful that will continue in what looks like a wide-open tournament."

Australia open their T20 World Cup campaign against Oman in Barbados on June 5, before Group B fixtures against England, Namibia and Scotland.

However, it was noted that the selection process left many deserving and in-form players unfortunate to miss out.

Mitch Marsh was appointed as the captain of the Australian squad, marking a significant leadership role for him. Notably, this edition of the T20 World Cup will see Steve Smith absent from the Australian World Cup squad for the first time since 2014, signalling a notable change in the team's composition and dynamics.

Ashton Agar and Cameron Green have been included in the squad despite their absence from the T20I circuit for nearly 18 months, highlighting the selectors' confidence in their abilities and potential contributions to the team. Additionally, the squad includes death-over specialist Nathan Ellis, who will bolster the fast bowling department alongside Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood. This formidable fast-bowling trio, complemented by Ellis's expertise in closing out innings, adds depth and versatility to Australia's bowling lineup, enhancing their prospects for success in the upcoming T20 World Cup. The announcement of reserves is still pending, but it's worth noting that several players, including promising talent Jake Fraser-McGurk, seasoned seamer Jason Behrendorff, and versatile all-rounder Matt Short, did not make the final squad.

Mitch Marsh, who has been acting interim captain for Australia's T20I side over the past year, will lead the team in a major tournament for the first time at the T20 World Cup. This marks a significant milestone in Marsh's career, and his leadership will be crucial in guiding the team's fortunes in the tournament. NOTE : All participating teams can make changes to their squad until May 25. After this deadline, any alterations to the squad will necessitate approval from the ICC's Event Technical Committee.

Selectors hopeful of Mayank Yadav staying fit and boarding flight to Australia for Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Report

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) pacer Mayank Yadav has impressed the national selectors enough with his performances in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) for them to want him fit and ready for India’s tour of Australia later this year.

India will be hoping to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in what will be their first five-match Test series Down Under in more than three decades. And having Yadav, who has been consistently clocking speeds in excess of 150 kmph this IPL, alongside Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj in the pace unit could prove a game-changer for the Rohit Sharma-led team.

According to a report on The Indian Express , Yadav will be heading to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru where he will undergo a medical assessment before being put under the watch of biomechanics experts and fast-bowling coach Troy Cooley.

The report also states that the Delhi pacer will also likely tour Australia with the India A team later this summer for the selectors and the Indian team leadership to get a better idea of his skills in those conditions before making a decision on his selection.

“The plan is to gradually increase his workload. If he is fit and ready, the ‘A’-team tour will be a good developmental tour for him. If not, we will see him in the Duleep Trophy,” a source was quoted as saying in the report.

While the BCCI is in no mood to rush Yadav, who has just one First-Class appearance under his belt besides 17 List A and 14 T20 matches, into the national side, they are keen to award him a fast-bowling contract , which had been introduced by the board this year and was awarded to Akash Deep, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Umran Malik, Yash Dayal and Vidwath Kaverappa.

Yadav set the stage alight in the ongoing IPL, collecting back-to-back three-wicket hauls against Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), winning the Player of the Match award in both games. He had bowled a 155.8 kmph thunderbolt in the match against PBKS, and would do one better against RCB in his next appearance, bowling the fastest delivery of the season so far in that match that measured 156.7 kmph.

Yadav, however, has struggled with his fitness after getting his maiden IPL season off to a fiery start. He had bowled just one over in LSG’s home game against Gujarat Titans before walking off the field with a side strain . It later turned out to be an abdominal injury that forced him to miss the next five matches.

Even when he returned to action in the home game against Mumbai Indians on Tuesday, Yadav failed to bowl his full quota of overs and walked off the field after bowling 3.1 overs.

While there hasn’t been an official announcement ruling him out of the remainder of the season, LSG head coach Justin Langer provided an update on Saturday on the eve of their home game against Kolkata Knight Riders, saying the tearaway quick was unlikely to play any further part.

Several former cricketers, most of them Indian, have called for the 21-year-old pace sensation to be fast-tracked into the national team, some even calling for his inclusion in the squad for the T20 World Cup that takes place in June. England pace legend Stuart Broad had even suggested Yadav wouldn’t necessarily have to go through the grind to play at the highest level of the sport.

Former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson, on the other hand, had warned against including him in the Test setup on the basis of his IPL performances, saying the rigours of red-ball cricket could take a toll on Yadav if he wasn’t accustomed to bowling 15-20 overs a day and that India could utilise him as their trump card in the white-ball formats.
