The Ultimate Foodie’s Guide to Historic St. Augustine, Florida: Our 4-Day Itinerary

Kayla Springmyer

St. Augustine is a city rich with history, culture and culinary adventure. Originally founded in 1565, St. Augustine really is America’s Oldest City .

Charming restaurants and celebrated architecture can be found all around the city, which continues to serve as a cultural mecca as it has for hundreds of years prior. The cultural and ethnic diversity of St. Augustine is made evident from the vast array of cuisine available at every turn. St. Augustine was recently named one of USA TODAY’s Readers’ Choice 2020 “Best Historic Small Towns” and lonelyplanet.com’s “Top U.S. Destinations with European Style.”  Whether you’re looking for a relaxing getaway or an educational adventure, St. Augustine is a wonderful choice.

We were invited out by Florida’s Historic Coast to discover the city and enjoy the impressive array of food available. Here is The Ultimate Foodie’s Guide to Historic St. Augustine.

best food tour st augustine

Check into the Edgewater Inn

St. Augustine is home to many quaint hotels filled with beauty and history. We stayed at the Edgewater Inn , which is a comfortable bed & breakfast located right on the water, and only steps away from St. Augustine’s historic downtown district. The Edgewater Inn only offers a handful of rooms, so we recommend making your reservation as far in advance as possible.

best food tour st augustine

We stayed in a king room with waterfront views and a patio. The hotel room interior was clean, spacious and homey.

best food tour st augustine

The highlight of staying at the Edgewater Inn is the spectacular view you can get right from the comfort of your room. A patio door in our room opened up to the clear blue water of the Matanzas River, with the Bridge of Lions and historic downtown area visible. The view alone is undoubtably worth a stay at this hotel.

best food tour st augustine

We were provided with two rocking chairs to sit and enjoy the view with. Bamboo dividers offered privacy from neighboring hotel guests.

best food tour st augustine

Despite being small, the Edgewater Inn has some impressive amenities. A pool is available if you need a quick dip after a long day or if you simply want to lounge under the sun.

best food tour st augustine

After checking into the hotel and getting ourselves situated, it was time to begin exploring St. Augustine.

Free Wine Tasting at San Sebastian Winery

San Sebastian Winery was originally founded in 1996, and today serves as a historic and beloved staple in the city of St. Augustine. This winery offers free wine tastings every day of the week, with no reservations required. Due to COVID-19, our tasting looked a little different than usual, but it was still a great experience for any wine lover. There’s also a rooftop restaurant you can visit for even more food and wine samplings. Two of our favorites were the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Pinot Grigio.

best food tour st augustine

Dinner at Kingfish Grill

Kingfish Grill is a lovely marina-front restaurant with a generous amount of outdoor seating. The menu is pretty extensive, featuring an assortment of fresh seafood and sushi dishes.

best food tour st augustine

We started off with a Sauvignon Blanc and a beer.

best food tour st augustine

As an appetizer, we enjoyed the Fried Clams. They were very similar to a calamari dish, and were equally as tasty.

best food tour st augustine

For entrees, we ordered the Fish Tacos as well as the Cry No Mas roll and the Ultimate Spicy Tuna roll. All three were spectacular. The fish tacos were fresh and seasoned to perfection, and the sushi rolls featured flavors both unique and delicious.

best food tour st augustine

For dessert, we enjoyed the Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée and the Florida Key Lime Pie. The Crème Brûlée was phenomenal, and the key lime pie was both sweet and refreshing.

best food tour st augustine

Kingfish Grill was a great dinner spot, with an impressive menu. During our visit, quite a few menu items were already sold out for the night so we recommend visiting earlier in the day if you can.

Breakfast at the Inn

Another great amenity offered by the Edgewater Inn is the complimentary breakfast available seven days a week. Every morning, you can head to the dining room to enjoy a continental-style breakfast as well as some home-cooked additions which can be prepared fresh at your request. During our stay, we enjoyed the breakfast casserole made with egg, cheese, vegetables and ham.

Historic Red Express Tour

There are various historic tours you can take to learn a bit more about St. Augustine. We boarded the train for the Red Express Tour, where we learned all about the history of St. Augustine from the 1500’s to present day.

best food tour st augustine

In the late 19th century, Henry Flagler (co-founder of Standard Oil) began leaving his significant impact on the city of St. Augustine. Upon arrival, he began building the Ponce de Leon Hotel. The hotel opened to the public on Jan. 10, 1888 with immediate success. It was one of the first buildings in the United States with electricity, even before the White House. Flagler was good friends with Thomas Edison, who installed the generators at the Ponce de Leon Hotel himself. When it opened, hotel guests were so unfamiliar with electricity and distrusting of light switches that children were hired to turn the lights on and off throughout the day.

The former Ponce de Leon Hotel is now home to Flagler College, pictured below.

best food tour st augustine

Throughout the educational tour, we also passed by The Oldest House Museum and Gardens.

best food tour st augustine

St. Augustine is famous for what are referred to as “love trees.” Pictured below, these trees form when two unique species of trees grow through one another. Legend says that if you kiss your loved one underneath a “love tree,” you will remain with that individual for the rest of your life. These particular love trees are located right in front of Bar Harbor Cheesecake Factory, which we stopped by later in the day.

best food tour st augustine

The Red Express Tour lasted a little over one hour, and was a great way to quickly become familiar with the city.

Corks & Forks Strolling Tour with The Tasting Tours

The best way to experience a new city is through its food, and St. Augustine offers a number of unique food tours providing the opportunity to do just that. If you’re looking for a walking tour that covers the absolute best food and wine samplings St. Augustine has to offer, Corks & Forks Strolling Tour is the perfect choice. Hosted by The Tasting Tours , Corks & Forks combines delicious food and wine pairings with historical tidbits and educational opportunities along the way. Plus, it’s an excellent chance to make some new friends along the way.

best food tour st augustine

The first stop on our Corks & Forks tour was Athena Restaurant . Athena is a family-owned Greek restaurant located right in the heart of St. Augustine. Their menu is full of authentic Greek cuisine and beverages, all of which are prepared fresh with care. If you’re a fan of Greek food, Athena is a St. Augustine must.

best food tour st augustine

We were greeted with Kouros’ Agiorgitiko, a traditional Greek red wine.

best food tour st augustine

We also sampled the Saganaki (flaming cheese) as well as some traditional Greek gyros. The wine and flaming cheese dish paired well together. After sipping the red wine, the flavor of the cheese seems to change before your own tastebuds.

best food tour st augustine

Next on the tour was the Old City House Inn and Restaurant . Located within one of St. Augustine’s premier bed & breakfasts, this restaurant offers an outdoor dining experience that is both comfortable and elevated. We had the chance to sample a delicious Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc, which was paired with a lovely grilled salmon dish.

best food tour st augustine

The next stop was the Cafe Alcazar , an elegant eatery located inside the Lightner Museum, in a space which originally housed the largest indoor swimming pool of its time. The cafe is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. only. During our visit, we sampled the Escargot Alcazar and the Sesame Shrimp, both of which were fantastic. The wine pairing was the Clifford Bay Sauvignon Blanc, which was equally as tasty.

best food tour st augustine

Next on the tour was Casa de Vino 57 . This spot, housed in a historic 1807 building, features a wide array of boutique wines. During our food and wine tour, we had the opportunity to sample three wines or draft beers of our choosing, while enjoying a lovely charcuterie board. Our favorite beer was the Lost Coast Brewery Tangerine Wheat Ale, and our favorite wine was the Sheep Creek Sauvignon Blanc (which we may have even purchased an additional bottle of).

best food tour st augustine

Last and certainly not least on our tour was Bar Harbor Cheesecake Company . Originating in Maine, Bar Harbor Cheesecake Company offers an intimate eating and drinking experience. The St. Augustine location has 20 seats, and reservations are only given to returning customers. The restaurant offers over 40 flavors of home-cooked cheesecake as well as carefully-crafted European cheeseboards, soups, salads, appetizers, entrees and more.

It’s a lovely place to stop if you have the time to sit, relax and enjoy an entirely unique culinary experience. If you’re on a time crunch, you can stop by their take-out window and order your favorite items to-go.

best food tour st augustine

We were greeted with a breathtaking presentation of beautiful charcuterie boards, hummus boards, crab and lobster dips, jams and cheesecakes. The level of care that goes into each and every menu item at Bar Harbor Cheesecake Company is spectacular.

best food tour st augustine

We sampled the Island Grove Blueberry Moscato. It was smooth, with a slight sweetness that is flavorful while not overwhelming.

best food tour st augustine

We also sampled three cheesecake flavors: blueberry lemon, chocolate espresso and amaretto. Each was exquisite. The blueberry lemon was sweet and refreshing, the chocolate espresso tasted rich and decadent while the amaretto was nutty and delicious. While we recommend trying all three, our favorite was the amaretto. The cheesecake samplings also paired wonderfully with the blueberry moscato.

best food tour st augustine

We’d never been to a restaurant quite like Bar Harbor Cheesecake Company. If you only have time to stop by one eatery in all of St. Augustine, it should be this one. You won’t regret it.

The Tasting Tours hosts a number of separate food tours across St. Augustine and Jacksonville, Florida. To learn more, go to TheTastingTours.com .

Relax & enjoy the evening sunset

After an incredibly filling day of food of wine, we recommend a relaxing evening. You can walk around more of the historic downtown area, or head back to the inn. We decided to enjoy the sunset from the comfort of the back patio of our hotel room.

best food tour st augustine

Late night Ghost Tours of St. Augustine

With a city that dates back as far as St. Augustine, a somewhat spooky history is to be expected. If ghosts and ghouls are of interest to you, you’ll definitely want to consider one of St. Augustine’s many unique and thrilling ghost tours. We went with Ghost Tours of St. Augustine , which is a 75-minute walking tour that stops by some of the most haunting spots in the city.

best food tour st augustine

We learned the chilling history of some of St. Augustine’s most haunted locations from the cemetery to haunted hotels, churches, alleyways and even the Castillo de San Marcos.

best food tour st augustine

Once the ghost tour is over, we recommend walking around the empty streets of St. Augustine and taking in their beauty at night. You’ll likely remain full from the generous food and wine tour for the rest of the night, but if you work up an appetite for a late-night snack, we recommend checking out Burger Buckets . The Brauhaus Gourmet Pretzel and the homemade ice-cream deserve a chef’s kiss.

Breakfast with a view

Once again, we started our day off with a tasty complimentary breakfast at the Edgewater Inn. This time, we decided to take the food to-go and enjoy our meal on our water-front patio.

best food tour st augustine

St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum

In order to really get a feel for the impact of St. Augustine’s historic past, we recommend visiting as many museums and historical sites as you can fit in your trip. We decided to stop by St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum , where we had the opportunity to learn about the lengthy history of the lighthouse. With admission, you can climb to the top of the lighthouse for some remarkable views of the city, and you can also explore the premises and museum grounds.

best food tour st augustine

St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park

To learn more about some of the species native to St. Augustine along with wildlife from around the globe, stop by the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park . Serving as an educational zoo, funds from the Alligator Farm go to wildlife research and conservation efforts. It’s a great place to stop by if you have any animal lovers or small children in your group.

best food tour st augustine

Lunch at Meehan’s Irish Pub & Seafood House

For lunch, stop by Meehan’s Irish Pub & Seafood House , located right across the Matanzas River. You can find traditional Irish bites here, from the Shepherd’s Pie to the Meatloaf Dinner. Head upstairs to enjoy Johnny’s Oyster Bar on a spacious outdoor deck overlooking the water.

best food tour st augustine

The Hand-Cut Irish Chips are unmatched. Perfectly crispy and tossed in garlic, parsley and parmesan, you’ll find yourself finishing off the entire bowl if you aren’t careful.

best food tour st augustine

The Oysters Meehan are another must-try. These delicious fresh shucked oysters are baked with lemon garlic herb butter and topped with parmesan.

best food tour st augustine

We also ordered the Fresh Catch Sandwich, which is served over fresh tomato and zesty slaw, and topped with a key lime aioli. During our visit, the featured catch of the day was Blackened Mahi-Mahi. Once again, this dish was fantastic.

best food tour st augustine

Everything we tried at Meehan’s genuinely impressed us, and we’ll definitely return the next time we’re in St. Augustine.

Lightner Museum

After lunch, stroll over to the Lightner Museum for an afternoon of art and history. This historic museum occupies the old Alcazar Hotel, a Gilded Age resort built by Henry Flagler in 1888. Now, the Lightner Museum — named after Chicago publisher Otto C. Lightner — is home to an impressive collection of 19th and early 20th century fine and decorative art.

best food tour st augustine

Free tour & tasting at St. Augustine Distillery

St. Augustine Distillery is another exciting place to visit while in St. Augustine. It offers complimentary distillery tours and liquor tastings throughout the day. During the COVID-19 pandemic, tours are still happening but they are currently self-guided. Along the way, you can learn more about the brewing and distillery process while tasting some signature cocktails like the Florida Mule, New World Gin & Tonic, Rum Tiki and the Old Fashioned.

best food tour st augustine

The Florida Mule featured all the best parts of a typical Mule cocktail, with an added layer of flavor. In short, we loved it.

best food tour st augustine

The Gin & Tonic was our favorite of the four cocktails. It was refreshing, tasty and not too strong.

best food tour st augustine

The Rum Tiki had all the flavors of a tropical beach beverage, and would only be made better by adding it to a frozen cocktail.

best food tour st augustine

You either love or hate an Old Fashioned, and if you love them this is definitely one you’ll want to sample.

best food tour st augustine

Vodka, gin, rum and bourbon are available to purchase at the end of the tour, as well as the cocktail mixes, all of which are prepared right on-site in the distillery.

best food tour st augustine

Dinner at St. Augustine Fish Camp

For dinner, we stopped by St. Augustine Fish Camp . This new restaurant recently opened in 2020 with the goal of combining a welcoming neighborhood atmosphere with fresh and creative seafood dishes. From our perspective, it achieved just that.

best food tour st augustine

To drink, we ordered the Cucumber Basil Gimlet which features Nolet’s Gin, St. Germain Elderflower Liquor, cucumber, fresh basil, simple and lime.

best food tour st augustine

To start with, we ordered the Broiled Oysters. They were cooked to perfection with horseradish bacon cream. We highly recommend this appetizer.

best food tour st augustine

For dinner entrees, we enjoyed The Catch of the Day, which was flounder, as well as the grilled salmon with horseradish hollandaise, steamed spinach and parsley new potatoes.

best food tour st augustine

For dessert, the Signature Bread Pudding is a must. During our visit, the flavor was cookies & cream, but it changes day-to-day so be sure to ask. It was mouthwatering, and our only regret was not being able to finish the entire dish.

best food tour st augustine

Believe us, it was even more delectable than it was beautiful.

Check out of the Inn

As the trip comes to an end, it’s time to pack up your belongings and say goodbye to the Edgewater Inn. If you have the time, we highly recommend making a few more stops before you have to leave, though.

Castillo de San Marcos National Monument

The Castillo de San Marcos is a famous national monument located right along the Matanzas River. The historic fort was originally built by the Spanish to defend Florida. The monument now preserves the oldest masonry fortification in the continental U.S. and maintains over 450 years of cross-cultural history. During your visit, you’ll get to see where soldiers once slept and where strong walls of coquina stone protected against cannon fire.

best food tour st augustine

Wednesday Farmer’s Market at the St. Augustine Beach

If you’re going to be in St. Augustine on a Wednesday, we highly recommend making a quick trip to the Wednesday Farmer’s Market at the St. Augustine Beach. Local merchants and small businesses gather to sell fresh produce, homemade goods and more. It’s important to support local businesses, so this is a great pit-stop to make before you head home.

best food tour st augustine

Calling all coffee lovers! Stop by the Growers Alliance booth for some freshly brewed Kenyan coffee, served both iced and hot. You can choose from a variety of flavors, sweeteners and milks (both dairy and nondairy options are available).

Founder of Growers Alliance, Martin Kabaki, grew up on a coffee farm in Kenya. Now a resident of St. Augustine, he created Growers Alliance Cafe & Gift Shop. Profits go to supporting coffee growers, clean water initiatives, orphanages, hospitals and education in Kenya. To learn more about how they’re giving back, click here .

best food tour st augustine

If you’re not able to make it to the farmer’s market, you can still try some Kenyan coffee at the Growers Alliance cafe storefront located just down the street from the St. Augustine Beach, at 322 Anastasia Blvd.

best food tour st augustine

You can also find other vendors selling products like fresh honey, jams and much more.

best food tour st augustine

Lunch at Sunset Grille

For a final lunch in St. Augustine, we made our way to Sunset Grille on A1A. 2021 is Sunset Grille’s 30th year in operation, and it’s no surprise after you’ve tasted their food. Much of the menu is fairly simple, offering a variety of seafood dishes as well as more traditional American fare. But the quality of the food paired with the friendly staff at Sunset Grille truly sets it apart.

best food tour st augustine

We started off with a classic, the Mozzarella Sticks. They were simple but delicious, served with a homemade marinara sauce.

best food tour st augustine

For our entrees, we went with the Sunset Chicken Sandwich and the Baja Salad. Both were incredibly filling and made for a fresh, tasty lunch by the beach.

St. Augustine Food Scene – 12 Things To Love in Florida’s Historic Coast

By: Author Raymond Cua

Posted on Last updated: July 31, 2022

Want to know more about St. Augustine’s food scene? In this food guide, we’re dishing out 12 things to love about the city’s food scene including best restaurants and where to eat & drink in St. Augustine.

Founded by Spanish explorers in 1565, St. Augustine, Florida is very rich in culture and history.

In fact, it is the oldest city in the USA.

What I was most in awe about St. Augustine is that it has kept its Spanish influences all over the historic colonial district.

It really feels like you’re not in the US anymore.

Did you know? St. Augustine is listed as one of The Most Beautiful Towns in America by Condé Nast Traveler.

I’m originally from the Philippines , which was colonized by Spain , so I kind of felt I was back there as I strolled thru the historic district.

Daytime in St. George Street in St. Augustine, Florida

With over 450 years of history and diverse cultures, and being along the coast, there is so much to love about the St. Augustine food scene!

One thing you’ll quickly realize is most of its culinary aspect has a bit of travel aspect involved whether history, sight-seeing, or nature which makes a great day trip to St. Augustine !

In this food guide, I’ve broken them down into 12 things based on my 3-day visit to Florida’s Historic Coast!

This includes some of the best restaurants and things to do that highlights the food scene in St. Augustine.

St. Augustine Food Scene Guide

Here’s why you’ll love the food scene in St. Augustine in Florida’s Historic Coast!

Eat, drink, sleep and swim while overlooking the bay and marina

For three nights, I stayed at the Marker 8 Hotel & Marina, which is one of the best hotels in St. Augustine with awesome views of the marina and Matanzas Bay.

The hotel is also conveniently situated a good 10-minute walk to historic downtown across the Bridge of Lions.

Everything you do at the hotel has views overlooking the river:

  • Eat : Complimentary made-to-order breakfast is at the second floor dining room. Both indoor and outdoor dining has awesome views.
  • Drink : Complimentary wine at the first floor bar during social hour for each night of your stay. The bar is adjacent to the outdoor pool and lounge, with windows overlooking the marina.
  • Swim : The outdoor pool and lounge is right by the marina and river.
  • Sleep : The 26 guestrooms all have either a patio or balcony (depending on the floor), all of which overlooks the river.

Staying at Marker 8 Hotel & Marina is a great way to start enjoying the St. Augustine food scene, especially when doing the St. Johns River-to-Sea Loop .

Feast with a view of St. Augustine Beach

All about that salt life? Salt Life Food Shack lets you eat, drink and be salty while enjoying the views of St. Augustine beach.

Did you know? The term Salt Life was originally a phrase used on a spearfishing trip, but is now widely used for everyone who loves the beach life culture.

Salt Life Food Shack serves an eclectic menu ranging from seafood dishes, to sushi rolls, to burgers and street tacos.

The restaurant’s casual open air-space makes you feel close to the beach.

If you love oysters, I highly recommend the grilled garlic parm oysters.

It’s a half dozen fresh oysters, chargrilled in garlic butter sauce then topped with parmesan.

It’s not something you find most of the time for oysters.

I also really enjoyed the poke tuna taco at Salt Life Food Shack.

With poke becoming such a trend, I’m quite surprised it’s the first time I’ve seen poke taco.

The tuna was really fresh and buttery complimented with the right amount of sesame soy dressing and wasabi cream that doesn’t overpower the tuna.

Travelling Foodie Tip : They offer free rides to the shack if you live, or are staying, within parameters around the shack .

Seafood at Salt Life Food Shack in St. Augustine, Florida

  • Grilled Garlic Parm Oysters ($14.99)
  • Poke Tuna Taco – Raw poke tuna tossed in sesame soy dressing with avocado and wasabi cream
  • Rockin’ Lobster Roll – Lobster salad with cream cheese, spinach and carrots in a soy paper wrap, topped with sliced mango, jalapeños, wasabi fish eggs and Sriracha

Dine in one of the oldest houses in St. Augustine’s historic district owned by a James Beard nominated chef

My favourite meal was at Preserved Restaurant, one of newest and best restaurants in St. Augustine.

Owned by 2015 James Beard nominee and Executive Chef Brian Whittington, Preserved Restaurant features Southern cuisine that showcases local farmers in one of the oldest houses in historic Lincolnville built between 1865-1885.

Did you know? The restaurant is named Preserved because they have preserved the original structure of the house, even tearing down everything that was not original to maintain its Victorian character.

Their popular item that’s perfect for sharing is the House Charcuterie Board.

The short rib rillettes is a standout on this board as it comes with a layer of fat on top that you mix with the rest of the jar to add that extra level of richness and creaminess.

Charcuterie at Preserved Restaurant in St. Augustine, Florida

When you explore St. Augustine’s food scene, you’ll see oysters done in interesting ways.

I just had to try the Roasted East Coast Oysters.

The house bacon lardon added a nice hint of saltiness without being overpowering.

Oysters at Preserved Restaurant in St. Augustine, Florida

If you’re looking for that really Southern taste of cajun/creole, I highly recommend the Local Caught Fish at Preserved Restaurant.

It comes with very flavourful crawfish etouffee, a Cajun-style stew made by smothering seafood with a buttery rich sauce made with roux served over rice (in this case, rice middlins).

It was my first time having rice middlins, or rice grits.

The texture reminded me of risotto.

Try a unique version of clam chowder

One thing I was most surprised to learn about St. Augustine’s food scene is they have their own signature clam chowder.

The Minorcan Clam Chowder was created by Minorcan settlers who came to Florida to work as indentured servants on New Smyrna Beach’s indigo plantation.

What makes it unique? It’s deep red in color because it uses a tomato base.

But the main thing about Minorcan Clam Chowder is it uses a key ingredient called datil pepper that gives a spicy kick.

Did you know? Datil pepper is a popular locally grown product in St. Augustine. It is hotter than jalapeno, but less than habaneros.

We went to Catch 27, a fresh-catch seafood restaurant in the historic district.

All their seafood are caught fresh and locally in Florida.

Even the fish, shrimps and clams at Catch 27 are caught in Florida waters daily.

That’s why we definitely wanted to try the Minorcan Clam Chowder here.

Be sure to also try their Deviled Egg BLT with Southern Fried Oysters as well – I told you there’s so many unique oyster dishes here!

Catch 27 in St. Augustine, Florida

For someone who love New England Clam Chowder, Minorcan Clam Chowder is definitely a different experience to get used to since it is more of Manhattan-style chowder.

I definitely enjoyed the spicy kick the datil pepper brings, but still prefer the creaminess and none tanginess of the New England version. Definitely worth a try to taste something truly St. Augustine!

If you share the same chowder preferences as me, a local told me I would probably enjoy St. Augustine Seafood Company because they serve one called “Half & Half” that combines Minorcan Conch Chowder and New England Clam Chowder. You can check out St. Augustine Seafood Company here .

I wasn’t able to try this, so do let me know what you think!

I still think you have to try the original because you still have to try the real thing, but then also try this one to see which one you like more.

Dine in America’s oldest street

Just by the Plaza de la Constitucion in St. Augustine’s Historic District, you’ll find Aviles Street, the oldest street in the United States.

It’s not hard to miss because the entrance is denoted by a stone archway.

This historic brick street is home to St. Augustine’s arts district with several galleries.

The street was renovated and became sidewalk friendly allowing outdoor seating from independently owned restaurants and cafes.

We went to La Herencia Cafe, a traditional Cuban cafe serving Cuban food from family recipes.

They are known for their all day breakfast as well.

We went here for breakfast, and I tried the Guajiro, which has a delicious mix of ingredients I wasn’t expecting to have for breakfast.

Note: As of 2021, La Herencia Cafe has closed, but there are still other restaurants you can enjoy at America’s oldest street!

La Herencia in St. Augustine, Florida

  • Guajiro ($12) – open-faced omelet over Cuban toast, topped with black beans, roasted pork, salsa and Romano cheese
  • Beans & Feta ($11) – open-faced omelet over Cuban toast, topped with black beans, feta cheese and red onions
  • Mango Mimosa ($6)

Tour a distillery in a historic ice plant and sample spirits for FREE

The St. Augustine Food Scene is not just all food. It includes drinks too!

Housed in a historic 1920s ice manufacturing plant, the St. Augustine Distillery produces a variety of spirits including vodka, gin, rum and bourbon.

They have free tours and tastings that begin every half-hour on Monday-Sunday from 10:30am to 5pm.

St. Augustine Distiller Tour

Our tour guide, Brian, was very knowledgeable about the history of St. Augustine Distillery and distilling process while adding a bit of comedy in his delivery.

After the tour, we were able to sample four different cocktails that use each of their spirits: Florida Mule for vodka, Rum Tiki Cocktail for rum, Grapefruit Hibiscus for gin, and the Old Fashioned for bourbon.

We also got to sample their Double Cask bourbon and limited edition Port Finished bourbon, which is aged using port wine barrels from St. Augustine’s San Sebastian Winery.

You can learn more about San Sebastian Winery here .

Enjoy fresh local oysters overlooking Matanzas River

One of the best things about St. Augustine’s food scene is dining with a view.

There are a lot of restaurants in St. Augustine’s historic district that has views of the Matanzas River.

For this, we went to Meehan’s Irish Pub & Seafood House at night.

Travelling Foodie Tip : Head upstairs to Johnny’s Famous Oyster Bar at Meehan’s, and onto balcony for fresh air and beautiful views as you dine.

View of Matanzas River from Meehan's Irish Pub in St. Augustine, Florida

When you reach the second floor of Meehan’s Irish Pub & Seafood House, you’ll see their display of fresh raw bar selection.

I was very fortunate that the local St. Augustine oysters were available that night!

I definitely had to try them, and they were so fresh and delicious: mid-sized, creamy in texture and quite sweet.

Local Oysters at Johnny's Famous Oyster Bar at Meehan's in St. Augustine, Florida

Being an Irish pub, you have to try their Reuben Sandwich, which was piled high with very marbled and flavourful corned beef.

If you like calamari, you’ll definitely want to try the Cast Iron Calamari at Meehan’s Irish Pub as it’s pretty unique.

Served on a hot cast iron which withstood the cold night we had, the calamari was very flavourful with the burst of lemon garlic and fresh herbs.

The squid was so fresh that I can still taste the squid even with the sauce they had on the skillet.

Sail through the sunset while sipping on drinks

Being on the coast, sailing on the waters is a great way to explore St. Augustine.

I did the sunset sail aboard Schooner Freedom, and it was such a great experience!

Did you know? Freedom is an authentic replica of a 19th century blockade-runner.

Imagine sailing for two hours, spotting some dolphins (if you’re lucky), and admiring the sunset while sipping wine (or your drink of choice) and having fun conversations with the passengers…

That’s the life right there!

Travelling Foodie Tip : If you also want to learn some sailing, passengers are more than welcome to help set sail and maybe even take the helm.

People watch while sipping sangria at the historic pedestrian-only street

When in St. Augustine, you can’t miss St. George Street, the most touristy street in the city.

This pedestrian-only brick street spans four city blocks filled with shops, restaurants, museums, hidden courtyards and a lot of history.

One thing you’ll notice strolling the street are all the bars and taverns serving sangria.

We went to Sangrias Wine and Tapas Piano Bar for their specialty sangrias.

Dine inside the former world’s largest indoor swimming pool

St. Augustine’s history is also built in luxury. In the late 1800s, the city was a frequented resort destination for the rich thanks to Henry Flagler opening the Ponce de Leon Hotel and the Hotel Alcazar.

An 1887 Spanish Renaissance Revival style building, Hotel Alcazar had the largest indoor swimming pool in the world at that time.

I love how St. Augustine’s food scene takes advantage of its history!

The hotel is now the Lightner Museum, but the swimming pool has been transformed into Cafe Alcazar for people to enjoy a unique dining experience surrounded by history.

Wine and dine around while touring St. Augustine

Want to combine eating, drinking and touring?

You’ll want to check out The Tasting Tours, voted best “crawl” in St. Augustine by Travel and Leisure Magazine.

This is a great way to get a well-rounded experience of St. Augustine food scene.

Unlike other food tours that just take you to various restaurants, this 3-hour walking tour also takes you around the city where you’ll learn something fun and informative.

Our tour route took us around Flagler College, Casa Monica, Lightner Museum, Aviles Street, Plaza de la Constitucion, and St. George Street.

We did the Corks and Forks Pairing Tour (food and wine) with our tour guide, Molly Verlin.

She is very knowledgeable about St. Augustine, the arts and architecture with her background in art history.

The great thing about this tour is we got to do some of the things already in this list, including dining at Cafe Alcazar and dining along Aviles Street.

Stop 1: The Gifted Cork

This was the tour meeting point and also the first stop.

Here, we were able to sample four different wines of our choice based on a selection of California wines.

It was paired with three kinds of cheeses: champagne, asiago and gouda.

Stop 2: Old City House Inn & Restaurant

Taste local flavours with food festivals

With an abundance of fresh seafood year-round, a diverse culture rooted in history, and a strong Spanish influence, St. Augustine’s food festivals are also quite diverse and unique.

Examples of which include the St. Augustine Spanish Wine Festival in September, Datil Pepper Festival in October, Annual Great Chowder Debate in November, and the Lions Seafood Festival in March.

Taste of St. Augustine Festival

During my visit in April, I had the opportunity to attend the 22nd Taste of St. Augustine Festival at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre.

All proceeds of this annual fundraising event goes to EPIC Behavioral Healthcare to support substance abuse prevention, intervention, outpatient treatment and aftercare services.

The Taste of St. Augustine Festival featured local tastes from over 25 restaurants and vendors with live music and other activities.

Entrance was $5, and food range from 2-5 tickets (1 ticket is $1).

It’s like having the best of St. Augustine food scene in one spot!

My two favourite dishes were the gator & shrimp creole from Raintree Restaurant and blackened shrimp & grits from South Beach Grill.

I’m glad I got to try the popular gourmet ice pops from The Hyppo which are all-natural and handmade.

They didn’t have the toasted black sesame that I initially wanted to try, so I went with the mango champagne, which was actually better because the tropical taste made it so refreshing on the hot day.

20 Best Things to Do in St. Augustine, Florida

Here's how locals recommend exploring the coastal city, from ghost tours to gourmet ice pops.

With more than 450 years of history, it's not surprising that St. Augustine — the oldest continuously occupied settlement in America — is packed with intrigue. This coastal city is one of the best places to visit in Florida , thanks to all the fascinating things to do and see here, plus quaint places to stay and delicious eats to enjoy.

If there’s anyone who knows the best things to do in St. Augustine, it’s Barbara Golden, who has served as communications manager at the St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra & The Beaches Visitors and Convention Bureau since 2005. “I’ve been lucky enough to work in the tourism industry in the St. Augustine area for more than 40 years,” Golden says. “I get to explore and interact with great people and experiences here every day.”

Of course, the city has other superfans, too, like Florida travel and lifestyle blogger Mandy Mizell, who's known as The Flohemian to her followers. “I first visited St. Augustine on my fourth-grade field trip — a Floridian rite of passage — and fell in love,” Mizell says. “I told my mom at the tender age of 10 that I was going to Flagler College, which I did for a year. When I met my husband, a Flagler College alum, I started visiting the area three to four times per year and spending every Christmas there with his family. I began a Florida travel blog shortly after I met him, and I used our family visits as an opportunity to seek new adventures around St. Augustine.”

Serving as your unofficial tour guides, here's what Golden and Mizell point to as the best things to do in St. Augustine, from classic, can’t-miss attractions to lesser-known locals’ picks.

Related : Hotels to Book for a Trip to St. Augustine

Go for a ride with Old Town Trolley Tours.

It may be touristy, Mizell admits, but taking a ride with Old Town Trolley Tours is a great and easy way to get around St. Augustine, and you'll hear historical tidbits about the 458-year-old city as you go. Plus, Mizell points out, “It’s a free sober ride around town — and most of the local distilleries, wineries, and breweries offer free tastings. There’s also a connection to the Old Town Trolley Beach bus, so you can easily navigate the area without a car.”

Tour Castillo de San Marcos National Monument.

Castillo de San Marcos National Monument is a Spanish stone fortress that was built in 1695 and offers unbeatable views of St. Augustine Inlet. “I love to stand on the ramparts, looking out at the Atlantic Ocean,” Golden says. “I love to imagine what it was like living here in the 1600s, being on watch for approaching pirates or British invaders. Today, the views are of boats moored in the Bayfront, pods of dolphins swimming and playing in the bay, and kayakers paddling by. The rangers, reenactors, and storytellers here are engaging, and I learn something new about our history every time I visit.”

Mizell shares the same love for the landmark and recommends visiting after sundown. “The fort has a special energy at night, and it’s completely free of charge to wander the grounds outside after hours. The entire fort is illuminated, making for some fun night photos with palm tree shadows in the background. You’ll also overhear haunted tales as ghost tours pass through the area. Sit on the wall during a full moon and watch boats cruise along the Matanzas River.”

Cool down with a gourmet popsicle.

Everyone loves a home-grown success story, and The Hyppo is exactly that. Opened in 2010 with a little money and a lot of passion, this shop sells ice pops that are inspired by Mexican paletas, and they contain local, in-season produce and herbs in super-fresh flavor combinations like cucumber lemon mint, blackberry jasmine, pineapple ginger, and (this writer’s favorite) mango mojito. Today, there are five Hyppo locations around Florida, plus pop peddlers across the nation. The pop shop is named for the patron saint of Saint Augustine — the city was discovered on the day of the Feast of Saint Augustine of Hippo — and their flagship store location is on Hypolita Street.

Get spooked on a ghost tour.

It’s another touristy itinerary item, but ghost tours in St. Augustine are popular for a reason, and you simply can’t leave the city without taking one. From Old Town Trolley Tours’ Ghosts & Gravestones tour aboard their signature ghoulish trolleys to lantern-lit walking tours with Ghost Tours of St. Augustine , there are many to choose from, some more spooky than others. Expect to end the night fully freaked out after hearing tales of St. Augustine’s dark past and the hauntings that continue today.

Tour the St. Augustine Distillery and have a drink upstairs.

The St. Augustine Distillery and upstairs Ice Plant Bar is a two-for-one stop. “No visit to the Oldest City is complete without embracing its true spirits,” Mizell says. “This local distillery is located inside the historic FPL Ice Plant. They offer free tours with complimentary tastings, which will get the light drinker quite tipsy. Be sure to visit the Ice Plant restaurant and bar upstairs for a cocktail, where each concoction is served with special types of ice.” There’s also a gift shop where you can purchase the distillery’s sippables, plus non-alcoholic treats that are often created in collaboration with other local businesses.

Visit St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum.

For a birds-eye take on the Oldest City, head to St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum . “Climb 219 steps to the top for the most spectacular view of historic St. Augustine, the surrounding area, and the Atlantic Ocean,” Golden recommends. “I also like touring the grounds to see the wooden boatworks and the local volunteers working to build authentic replica vessels. My favorite part is entering the archaeology lab to observe maritime archeologists working to identify and restore some of the treasures they find on wrecks off our coast — most hundreds of years old.”

Relax at the beach.

While the main appeal of St. Augustine is certainly its winding cobblestone streets and centuries-old Spanish colonial architecture, its beaches are also worth a visit. Nearby St. Augustine Beach is a popular choice, while the white sands of tranquil Crescent Beach and breezy Butler Beach are perfect places to unwind.

Dine at The Floridian Restaurant.

For full-fledged, Florida-style dining with a Southern twang, chow down at The Floridian Restaurant . “Located on Spanish Street, this farm-to-table restaurant is adorned with quirky Florida decor, such as vintage rattan, alligator heads, and Florida kitsch,” Mizell shares. “The native Floridian chef composed a menu sourcing local ingredients with dishes that pay homage to all the flavors that influence St. Augustine. It's predominantly upscale Southern fare with local recipes passed down over generations.”

Plan a wintertime visit to experience Nights of Lights.

There’s no bad time of year to visit St. Augustine, but some visitors make annual pilgrimages from mid-November to the end of January to witness Nights of Lights , one of the top holiday light displays in the world. Decked in millions of tiny white lights, the city glows with a warm and festive atmosphere that’s breathtaking to see, and the spectacle is completely free to enjoy.

Watch a show at St. Augustine Amphitheatre.

Located on Anastasia Island, the St. Augustine Amphitheatre is an outdoor amphitheater that seats up to 4,000 people, making it a great place to catch some of your favorite acts. Mizell also recommends going on a Saturday morning, when you can browse a farmers’ market full of local vendors selling produce, art, and prepared foods. “There’s always live music, and it gives you a real glimpse of the local life and flavors of St. Augustine,” Mizell says. “Oftentimes there’s a featured local artist or author that you can chat with and learn lore about the Oldest City.”

Zipline over crocodiles.

Alligators and Florida go together like beaches and sunshine, and the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park is a great place for an up-close (but safe) encounter, plus educational programming. “My favorite experience is the Crocodile Crossing, a zipline and ropes course over the crocs and gators,” Golden shares. “It’s a workout and a fun way to see the park’s inhabitants.” Another favorite is the rookery, where hundreds of wading birds nest each year between February and June. “The sight is amazing,” Golden adds. “If you love birding, this is the spot — roseate spoonbills, egrets, herons of all kinds, and more can be seen here.”

Try local chocolate.

If you have a sweet tooth, Golden recommends touring the Whetstone Chocolates factory . “Free samples come with this tour that tells the story of chocolate (one of my favorite things in life), including the Spaniards introducing it to the rest of the world, how artisan chocolates are made, and the right way to eat fine chocolate,” she shares.

Stroll Magnolia Avenue.

Contrary to what its name suggests, Magnolia Avenue is lined not with blooming magnolias but with the second-most Southern of trees: “This scenic street is shaded by live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, and it's one of the most photographed streets in America,” Mizell says. “It also has a great photo opportunity in front of the Fountain of Youth sign.” Directly across the street, grab a freshly squeezed lemonade from The Fountain of Juice to enjoy as you walk.

Take a scenic drive.

Hit the road for a 72-mile coastal drive along the A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway from Ponte Vedra Beach to Flagler Beach. “I like to pack a picnic and head down to the spectacular beaches at Matanzas Inlet, then take the ferry over to our other fort, Fort Matanzas ,” Golden shares. “Paddle the inland waters with Ripple Effect EcoTours to see dolphins and other native animals in their natural habitat, followed by a visit to Marineland Dolphin Adventure to take a deeper dive into the aquatic life here, and — my very favorite — swim with a dolphin and learn to speak their language.”

Get out on the water.

Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and sailing are great ways to get another perspective on St. Augustine. “I feel safest with minimal boat traffic, paddling in front of the Castillo de San Marcos, on Salt Run, or at Matanzas Inlet,” Golden shares. She also recommends sailing charters for all the salty fun with none of the work. “One of my favorites is St. Augustine Sailing for a sunset sail — makes me feel like I am in a Christopher Cross song. They also have some really fun themed sails — brunch, Magic on the High Seas, and dinner cruises with a private chef.”

Visit Ponte Vedra Beach.

Don’t forget about Ponte Vedra Beach — a luxury resort town with beaches, golf, and nature preserves just north of St. Augustine. “The beaches at Ponte Vedra are very unique, and between St. Augustine and Ponte Vedra sits the GTM NERR ; we refer to it as the GTM Reserve,” says Golden. “This is the coastal site where Ponce de Leon actually sighted land on April 2, 1513, and came ashore the following day and claimed all of Florida for Spain. There’s even a statue of Ponce de Leon at the north beach parking area. The sand dunes here tower over the coquina beaches; in fact, they are 40 feet high in some places — the highest dunes in Florida. It’s also a great place to hunt for fossilized shark’s teeth .”

Take a nighttime bioluminescent kayaking tour.

Want to get out on the water, no SPF required? “One of my other favorite activities at the GTM Reserve is a night paddle with Geo Trippin ,” Golden shares. “They take guests out on Guana Lake, where they paddle into the night to see the bioluminescent jelly combs. It’s like magic to see the sparkles that light up around your paddle in the water, and your guide will explain the existence of this natural phenomenon since the beginning of man and its importance to our environment. Unlike other places where biolumes are a seasonal occurrence, they are present year-round on Guana Lake.”

Book a food tour.

The food scene in St. Augustine has exploded in recent years, with eateries dedicated not only to the latest food trends but also to showcasing locals’ culinary heritage, from Greek, Menorcan, and Latin influences to down-home Southern cooking. “It’s hard to eat at all the great restaurants here, so I like to taste a few at a time on one of our city’s food tours ,” Golden says. “They change featured restaurants (usually three to four on each tour) and the chef or a manager comes to the table to talk about what’s so special at their restaurant.”

Groove at Colonial Oak Music Park.

According to Mizell, one of the hidden treasures of historic St. George Street is Colonial Oak Music Park , where you can “listen to live local music under a 300-year-old oak tree streamed with lantern lights.” What could be better? The one-of-a-kind venue also has improv comedy nights, where you can sit back and enjoy a laugh or become part of the show as an audience volunteer. “In September, the Colonial Oak hosts artists during St. Augustine’s annual Sing Out Loud Festival and features national music acts,” she adds. “The best news is that most events have free admission, so you can pop in for a song or hang out for the whole evening.”

Visit Anastasia State Park.

Located less than 10 minutes by car from historic downtown St. Augustine, the serene Anastasia State Park has 1,600 acres of beaches, tidal marshes, maritime hammocks, and ancient sand dunes, where visitors can swim, fish, canoe, kayak, hike, and even camp. The park also has a full calendar of events , from guided paddle adventures and bird walks to trail hikes and coffee with a park ranger. It’s a vacation within a vacation, right in the middle of everything.

What agency inspects restaurants in Florida?

Routine regulation and inspection of restaurants is conducted by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. The Department of Health is responsible for investigation and control of food-borne illness outbreaks associated with all food establishments.

How do I report a dirty restaurant in Florida?

If you see abuses of state standards, report them and the Department of Business and Professional Regulation will send inspectors. Call the Florida DBPR at 850-487-1395 or report a restaurant for health violations online .

Get the whole story at our restaurant inspection database .

What does all that terminology in Florida restaurant inspections mean?

Basic violations are those considered against best practices.

A warning is issued after an inspector documents violations that must be corrected by a certain date or within a specified number of days from receipt of the inspection report.

An administrative complaint is a form of legal action taken by the division. Insufficient compliance after a warning, a pattern of repeat violations or existence of serious conditions that warrant immediate action may result in the division initiating an administrative complaint against the establishment. Says the division website: "Correcting the violations is important, but penalties may still result from violations corrected after the warning time was over."

An emergency order — when a restaurant is closed by the inspector — is based on an immediate threat to the public. Here, the Division of Hotels and Restaurants director has determined that the establishment must stop doing business and any division license is suspended to protect health, safety or welfare of the public.

A 24-hour call-back inspection will be performed after an emergency closure or suspension of license.
