The town is right on the Wales Coast Path and  The Coastal Way . Ceredigion's coast is also well-known for wildlife including the famous Cardigan Bay bottlenose dolphin pods. Aside from the obvious perk of beautiful views across the harbour in all weathers, Y Seler  is one of Aberaeron's best rated restaurants, with a cosy atmosphere and specialities including Carmarthenshire mussels, scallops, cod, shrimp and sea bass. The dog friendly terrace is the setting for tapas during the summer months.

Experts in fresh fish and ice cream

Fresh fish and seafood are sold by the waterside here at The Hive , while squid, crab, pulled pork and steak feature on the restaurant menu. Sweet teeth are catered for in unique style with homemade honey ice cream (including a Turkish Delight version), and you'll be entertained by live music at the weekend.

Llanerchaeron Georgian villa and gardens

There's a lot to take in at the National Trust owned  Llanerchaeron . This minor gentry estate is largely unchanged since the 18th century, when John Nash designed its villa and walled kitchen gardens. Meet sheep, pigs and Welsh black cattle on the working organic farm or wander around artefacts left by its last resident 25 years ago.

Crossing 45 acres of wildlife, Blaencamel Organic Farm is an award winning family farm in nearby Ciliau Aeron, renowned for its organic produce, ecological ethos and woodlands. Take a stroll along the River Nant and visit the acre of greenhouses to find out the secrets behind their specialities, then visit the shop to pick, taste and sample for yourself. Dolphin spotting in Cardigan Bay

Cardigan Bay  is just one of two places along the British coast where bottlenose dolphins can be spotted. Over 300 of them spend part of the year in the area, usually throughout the summer, peaking in numbers during September and October. There are several companies operating  boat trips , mainly from nearby pretty village of New Quay, to watch these wonderful creatures cavorting in their natural habitat.

New Quay Honey Farm: a hive of serenity

Honey wine was an inebriating favourite among Welsh people during Roman times, so this passionately run complex of hives added a tipple making meadery to its tea room and shop, which had been supplying sweet treats since the mid 1980s.  An intriguing accompanying exhibition  is laid out on the top floor of a chapel. New Quay Honey Farm 's Heather Mead has won awards, featured on the Great British Menu on TV and called the best mead I've ever tasted by a writer in The Times.

From the mid 18th century, Thomas Johnes – perhaps the best known owner of Hafod , a spectacular 200 hectare estate - laid out its paths in a picturesque style to suit picturesque walks. 200 years later, his success means you can plot your path (from easy to strenuous) along bridges, monuments, cascades and valleys. Hafod is around 50mins drive form Aberaeron - there's a choice of routes you can take to explore the gorgeous Ceredigion countryside.

Vale of Rheidol Railway

See stunning scenery in style. A short drive down the coast road to Aberystwyth brings you to the Vale of Rheidol Railway , or you can catch the train from Devil's Bridge. Opened to the public in 1902, it's one of the most scenic narrow gauge routes in the world. The last steam railway owned by British Rail before being privatised in 1989, it's now a gentle way to wind through stop-off points from Devil's Bridge to Aberystwyth.

Aberaeron Beach

Aberaeron Beach is made up of rock and shingle, with a series of groynes which run the length of the beach stopping any tidal shift. It is a popular beach for walking, fishing, birdwatching and sailing enthusiasts. If you are lucky, on a warm day you may even spot the some of the porpoise population.

How To Get To Aberaeron Beach

Arriving by car.

Aberaeron sits on the stretch of coast between New Quay and Aberystwyth, and the A487 (coast road) runs through the outskirts of the small town. As you approach, you will see the brightly painted houses along the main road (leading to it being know in our family as the rainbow town).

There are three car parks in Aberaeron. One to the south of the harbour which only has about 8 spaces. The other two are north of the harbour nearer to the beach itself.

Regent Street car park is the first you will come to and is only a short stroll from the beach. It has plenty of room and handily has four electric vehicle charging points.

The final car park is along the sea front and is only a 5 minute walk to the harbour. This car park has toilets located nearby and also has great views from your car if the weather isn’t too good.

All car parks are pay and display and offer you the option to pay by card.

Arriving By Foot

Aberaeron sits on the coastal path, and is only 6.5 miles from New Quay. This section of the coastal path is quite an easy walk with no major challenges. When the tide is out, it’s possible to walk along the beach between New Quay and Llanina point, a favourite walk of Dylan Thomas when he lived in the area.

Aberaeron beach isn’t quite as pretty as some of the other beaches on this coastline but offers lots of options for sports and nature lovers. It is a favourite spot for sailing, fishing, experienced surfers and birdwatchers alike. For our family, its appeal was that it was really quiet and offered the perfect spot for perfecting their stone skimming skills and the time old favourite activity of clambering over rocks. As the beach is west facing it is a great place to watch the sunset over the sea while enjoying an evening stroll.

Aberaeron Town

Aberaeron was built around a Georgian square in 1805. These beautiful period properties are painted in bright colours which give the town a vibrant feel even on a dull winter’s day. The different colours were not merely decorative but in the past they had a very practical purpose. They were to help the sailors quickly identify their home when returning from fishing trips.

These characterful buildings surround the harbour, interspersed with cafes, craft shops and restaurants. Its a charming place to wander round after you’ve visited the beach and there are lots of places to grab a drink or a bite to eat.

There is also a large park with a playground to keep the little ones entertained for half an hour.

Eating Out In Aberaeron

Aberaeron is well known locally as the place to go for quality food in a stunning setting. There is a host of different food options, from cosy cafes to high end restaurants.

On our first trip to Aberaeron we visited the Harbourmaster which sits (as is suggested by the name) right alongside the harbour, facing west to catch the last rays of sun on a summer’s day. It has a lovely terrace to the front of the building overlooking the harbour, which is the perfect spot to sip on sundowners.

We were seated inside, with views of the boats bobbing up and down in the harbour and the sun shinning through the large picture window. We all found something that we enjoyed on the menu, which is locally sourced, with a selection of dishes featuring Cardigan Bay shellfish and fish, Welsh lamb and beef, Ceridigion cheese and organic vegetables. The food was delicious and the atmosphere and staff were lovely.

As we loved Aberearon so much, we returned later in our holiday to sample the food at The Hive, a bright orange restaurant that sits right next to the harbour. The Hive offers a range of small plates which can be ordered tapas style or larger meals. The food again was delicious and the setting was cosy and intimate with fairy lights twinkling as the sun set.

The Hive also serves its famous honey ice cream from a kiosk outside which is irresistible on a hot day.

Y Seler is a high end restaurant that also has a large terrace with comfy seating and great views, situated right in the middle of the harbour. We didn’t eat here, but had drinks sitting in the sunshine on the squishy sofas. The menu looked amazing but not as child friendly as some of the other places nearby which is the only reason we gave it a miss.

Why We Love Aberaeron

Aberaeron has it all – a beach, easy parking, pretty rainbow houses, a harbour to enjoy a drink by, lots of independent stores to mooch around not to mention lots of places to eat food glorious food! It is a little gem of a town which we returned to three times in during our week stay nearby, which just says it all!

Laura loves travelling across the UK and abroad. She has two children and a husband who are often her travel companions. Beach holidays, cosy cottages, treehouse adventures and brunching are just a few of her favourite ways to spend her travel time.

Aberaeron Georgian Harbour Town Cardigan Bay

Aberaeron – a charming Georgian town on the Cardigan Bay coast of West Wales

History of aberaeron.

Aberaeron has a long history as a fishing port with many local people supplementing their income by fishing for herring during the season.

In 1805 plans were laid to construct the harbour at the mouth of the Aeron River. This resulted in the town being greatly expanded with many fine houses being built. The railways brought about the development of many coastal towns such as Aberaeron, Bournemouth and Brighton as holiday destinations

Aberaeron has a good selection of guest houses, self catering cottages and and excellent restaurants. The great classic architect John Nash who built the near by Llanerchaeron mansion was reputedly involved in the planning of the new town.

Shipbuilding also flourished with over 60 sailing vessels being built including 35 schooners ‘the greyhound of the ocean’ Aberaeron became a thriving and prosperous town.

Today in Aberaeron

Aberaeron retains its Georgian character with elegant brightly painted town houses – there are 248 listed buildings in Aberaeron town and it is still a focal point for the rural communities in mid Cardigan Bay. Aberaeron is becoming something of a foodie delight. Enjoy a stroll around the harbour along Quay Parade, and enjoy lunch or afternoon tea at The Hive on the Quay or the award winning Cellar Restaurant and Bar – The Best Restaurant In Wales 2019. The excellent restaurant – The Harbour Master is situated on the harbour with views of the colourful houses across the water.

Take a boat trip to explore Cardigan Bay’s marine ecology and Heritage Coast from the harbour. Plus many charming shops including the Aberaeron Craft Centre, eating places and pubs to enjoy. There are a number of festivals and events in the town which are worth looking out for when planning a trip here. In July there is the Aberaeron Regatta and August is busy with the Aberaeron Mackerel Fiesta,  Aberaeron Carnival with it’s street floats and colour themed dress code and a Beer and Cider Festival.  All current Aberaeron events can be seen on the events calendar .

Aberaeron to Llanerchaeron Cycle-way

Aberaeron is easy to find on the main A487  Cardigan  to  Aberystwyth road. There is a regular bus service between Cardigan and Aberystwyth that stops at Aberaeron. There is also plenty of parking in the town.
