9 best beer apps for Android for the hops fans

Beer is one of our oldest beverages. The earliest beers were potentially 13,000 years old, if not older. Many people drink it, whether cheap beers for college parties or craft beers at local brewhouses. That’s kind of what makes beer so special. It can be cheaper than soda or expensive enough to feel fancy when drinking it. There is a lot of beer out there, and your phone can help you see it, buy it, and keep track of it. Here are the best beer apps for Android.

We’d also like to give honorable mentions to RateBeer ( Google Play ) and Beers ( Google Play ). Both apps have loads of potential, but RateBeer needs some more polish, while Beers hasn’t seen an update since 2018.

• Drizly (and similar apps)

Price: Free

The BJCP is an authority on beer classifications. Its official app helps you figure out what kind of beer you have and how to differentiate between other beers. The app shows the BJCP guidelines, last updated in 2015. You can search for various types of beer, the ability to bookmark style categories, and there isn’t an ad as far as the eye can see. It’s a good, quick resource for beer fans.

BrewGene is another resource for beer drinkers. It houses more than 100,000 types of beer, complete with ratings for each one. You can read ratings from other people and add your own rating. You can also track the beers you’ve had, find beer around your town, and create a wishlist of beers you want to drink.

The app has its ups and downs, but it’s generally good most of the time. We think Untapped is better, but this isn’t terrible.

Beer has one of the longest histories of just about any topic. There are many websites, resources, and even Wikipedia has a lot about various types of beer and beer companies. Google is a good way to find some of those resources, even if today’s Google leans a bit too heavily on random listicles rather than what you’re actually looking for. When you have a topic with so many subtopics, a quick Google search can answer a lot of simple questions.

Google Maps is one of the best resources for finding local beerhouses and brewhouses. A quick search can reveal a bunch in your area. Maps can also tell you opening and closing times, reviews from other Maps users, and directions. It’s especially helpful in larger cities where a local brewhouse may be a bit harder to find. It’s a bit of a lame recommendation, but it’s still a good one.

Reddit is another decent spot for beer drinkers. There are many subreddits for the topic, including large ones like Beer and Craft Beer and more local ones like this specific subreddit for Atlanta beer fans. You can connect with people near and far about brewhouses, various types of beer, and get recommendations from other people. Reddit has other topics, too, so you won’t have an app for only beer on your phone.

Tavour is a service where you can buy beer. It boasts beers from a bunch of different breweries from 47 different states. For the most part, it works a bit like Amazon. You surf for beer, find the ones you like, and then order. The order is shipped to you, and that’s that. There is also a rating system so you and other buyers can share your thoughts on each brew.

The app was recently updated with some big changes, and people aren’t happy with the new bugs introduced, but it’s usually a pretty decent place to buy beer that you can find near you.

Price: Free / $5.99 per month / $54.99 per year

Untappd is arguably the most popular beer app on mobile. It boasts an all-in-one experience that does most of what every other app on this list is capable of doing. You can find, favorite, and review your favorite beer. Additionally, you can find places that sell beer near you so that you can find the good stuff. Some other features include a social element where you and your friends can share your experiences, alerts when venues near you get new types of beer, and some other stuff.

The one downside is the takeover from Foursquare. It made the map section a bit more difficult to use. Otherwise, this is definitely the one we’d recommend first.

Price: Free / $12.99 per month

YouTube is a decent place for beer enthusiasts. There are many how-to videos, review videos, and just general videos about beer. You can find videos about the history of some products or the differences in the various types of beer. This is also an excellent resource for first-time brewers as there is an endless supply of beer brewing videos to learn from. Not every video is good, but most of them are decent, at least.

Drizly (and similar food delivery apps)

Price: Free / Varies

It is easier than ever to have beer delivered directly to you very shortly. Drizly, and similar apps (including Uber Eats), can deliver beer directly to your door. It’s primarily useful for restocking beer during a party when everyone’s a bit too drunk to drive. However, you can find all kinds of spirits on the app, including some fancier ones you may not have known about. Delivery fees may differ by region, and Drizly isn’t available everywhere, so those of you in smaller towns may not be able to use it.

Which Beer App Should You Use To Track What You Drink?

There are about as many beer-related apps out there as there are different types of beer. Well, not really, but there’s a ton. From the gimmicky beer pong simulators and beer glugging apps to the hardcore beer brewers statistics applications, there’s really something for everyone. Just like beer! I’ve spent some time perusing the good, the bad, and the ugly of some of the more downloaded beer apps out there so that you don’t have to. My thoughts are below:

Untappd (Android, iOS, Windows Phone)

After playing with over 25 different apps, I really found Untappd to be the most useful, user-friendly, and all around well-built social beer app. Untappd lets you connect with Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare friends and invite others via e-mail. The basic premise of Untappd is that you “check-in” whenever you sit down to enjoy a beer. You can rate it, upload pictures of it, and see who else in your social network also likes or hates the beer. You can also search for nearby bars, breweries, and beers which is especially helpful if you’re interested in trying some uncommon microbrews that are not widely available. The more you check-in, the more badges you earn, like “Newbie,” “Liquid Lunch,” and “I Believe in IPA!” The badges don’t really serve a purpose other than to remind you what a lush you are, but as a former Pokémon addict you “Gotta catch em all!”

One of my favorite features of this app is that you can look up “trending beers” and further filter by micro and macro brews that are trending. For instance, earlier this week The Concourse (part of the Gawker network) ran an article about Troeg’s Nugget Nectar. And sure enough, this beer was trending on Untappd. Using Untappd, I found what bars around me serve this beer, what other users think of the beer, and the other beers I should check out if I like Nugget Nectar.

One other small feature I enjoy about this app is the ability to connect with your brewers. For example, I checked in while drinking Bear Republic’s Racer 5 IPA, gave it a 4 Bottle Cap review (out of 5) and got a nice little note from the brewery itself. I doubt Anheuser-Busch would ever send me a similar message . Feeling connected to and appreciated by the people who make your beer is a nice bonus.

If I had to find a downside to this app, it would simply be that I’m not sure I need a reminder of what a drunk I am. I’m not a heavy user of the app, not yet anyway, but if you check-in frequently, your friends and family now have hard data that shows them how much of a degenerate alcoholic you are. Fortunately, you can still drink all the liquor and wine you want. Shhhhh, our little secret.

Beer Citizen  (Android, iOS)

This app has a huge database of beers with detailed beer descriptions and user submitted reviews. It doesn’t really do anything that Untappd can’t do, but the depth and detail of reviews far surpasses what Untappd offers almost to a fault. A user can review a beer by its appearance, scent, taste, and mouthfeel. But within each of those categories there are literally dozens of additional fields you can review. These include things like heavy, frothy, oily, warming, acidic, effervescent, floral, citrus, pine, malts, dark, carbonation, head retention, the list goes on and on. For my purposes, this is just too much detail that I don’t find particularly useful – it’s also a bit overwhelming. I also don’t know how a beer can be both light and crispy and also heavy and creamy, but the way the reviews are laid out, this seems to be the case quite a bit.

Beer Counter  (Android, iOS)

Pretty much just what it says. It counts how many beers you’ve consumed and can also tell you how much you’ve spent. You can change the amount of dollars per beer and also change the amount of currency. I suppose this could be useful for trying to split up a bill at the end of the night, but if you’re seriously using a counter to track your beer consumption for the night, you’re doing it wrong. There’s also an iOS version!

Beer?!  (Android, iOS)

This app will just text your friends “Beer?!” so you can invite them out for a beer. I’d rather just text my friends. It’s easier than using this app.

BeerCalc  (Android)

BeerCalc is really for more hardcore home brewers. With this application you can type in the original gravity and final gravity of the beer you made and the app will tell you things like the ABV of your beer and how many calories and carbs are in your beer per 12oz. It provides even more detail than that, but again this app is really not for the casual beer drinker and is only going to find use among serious home brewers. BrewR is a similar app, but after playing with both for a bit, BeerCalc seems a little more fleshed out and user-friendly.

TapHunter  (Android, iOS)

This app has a lot of potential, but it’s just not there yet. TapHunter can tell you what beers are on tap at bars near you as well as what that bar has in cans and bottles and also beers that are “on deck.” Let’s say you’re a huge fan of some super rare Belgian Trappist Ale and you see that it’s “on deck” at a bar you like. You can figure out when it’s officially tapped and go enjoy it before they run out. Unfortunately, TapHunter’s database is just too small to be useful right now. I live in a part of Brooklyn, NY that has nearly an infinity amount of bars and the app only tells me there’s 3 bars within 3 miles of me. It’s useful for tracking those few bars, but not much else.

Any Beer ABV  (Android, iOS)

Any Beer is the only app I actually paid for. It was only $0.99. The app is incredibly simple and has an enormous database of beers, telling you the brewery they’re from and the alcohol content they contain. I’m not sure I’ll ever get much use out of this app, but every once and a while I do find myself staring at a bottle of beer that doesn’t mention the ABV and more likely than not this app will be able to tell me what the alcohol content is. Pretty useful if you want to make sure you’re not accidentally drinking some 2.0% beer for weaklings or accidentally getting some 11.0% beer and thus blacking out faster than intended.

BJCP Android  (Android, iOS)

BJCP, or Beer Judge Certification Program, is easily the most detailed app when it comes to describing different types of beer. This app is basically the equivalent of a giant study guide for people who want to pass the beer equivalent of whatever the top sommelier exam would be. Their database lists everything from light lagers and pilsners to meads and ciders. The categories are then even further subdivided and tell you, in excruciating detail, all about the beverage’s aroma, appearance, flavor, mouthfeel, ingredients, and history. If you want to homebrew a pale ale and make sure that your pale ale could win the equivalent of best in show at Westminster, then this app should be your guide. There’s also an iOS version!

5 essential apps for brewing your own beer

Brewing comes with some math homework—but there are apps for that.

In the two years since my wife and I started making our own beer , we learned that brewing is mostly about keeping your equipment clean, but it also involves doing a lot of math. 

That’s where brewing apps come in handy: they do a lot of the calculations so you can focus on designing and scaling your recipes. These tools will also guide you through all of the timing on brew day, making them especially helpful if you’re a beginner. 

Every homebrewer should check out Brewfather. This platform is available for desktop browsers , Android , and iOS , and features full syncing capabilities between devices so you can design a recipe on your computer and then check details on your phone.

Creating a recipe is easy—just add the ingredients (fermantables, hops, and any other additions), and the size of your batch. The app will automatically make all the calculations for you, including the amount of water you have to add, for example. When it’s time to brew, Brewfather will create all of the timers you’ll need, complete with a schedule of when you’ll need to add in all of your components.

To save you some time, the platform is also constantly updating its extensive library of ingredients, which includes all the relevant statistics for each one, like yield percentages and IBUs. Just search for your ingredients and the platform will take them into account automatically. 

Brewfather’s free version gives you access to almost all its features, but you’ll only be able to store five recipes. If you don’t want to pay, you can always export a recipe to make room for a new one, and then import it again later if you need it. On the other hand, if you decide to invest and have an electric hydrometer, Brewfather’s $20-a-year subscription version allows you to integrate it, so you can get real-time updates on your phone about how fermentation is coming along. 

Brewfather is available for free for Android , iOS , and on the web . Unlock premium features with a $20 a year subscription.  

BeerSmith was the most-recommended app on the market until Brewfather came around. It’s available as a direct download for Windows, macOS, and Linux, but you can also get to it on your web browser and mobile device. 

This platform might look a little dated, but it’s still powerful and comprehensive, with built-in support for a staggering amount of ingredients, though you might need to install add-ons for some of them. One of its best features is calendar mode, which allows you to track the brewing, fermentation, and aging of your various ongoing libations in one place. BeerSmith also lets you print step-by-step directions for your designed recipe, set up timers for the brewing process, and access an online collection of user-submitted recipes if you need a little inspiration. 

BeerSmith is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux , for $35 after a 21-day free trial. You can also download it on Android and iOS for $5. Subscriptions start at $15 a year.

Brewtarget is open source, which means it’s completely free. The user interface is crude yet effective, but the ingredients list isn’t nearly as complete as similar applications. 

There’s no mobile version and no cloud syncing, so everything runs and is stored entirely on your computer—this could be a downside or a benefit depending on what you need. Brewtarget is not the best app on this list, but it’s the best free brewing app you can install on your computer, and once you set it up with the recipes and ingredients you normally use, it might work very well for you. 

Brewtarget is free for Windows, macOS, and Linux .

BeerCalc is another free, web-based option. It’s not quite as polished at Brewfather and has one major downside—the platform uses the metric system and there’s no way to change that.

Still, BeerCalc has an impressive amount of user-contributed recipes and ingredients to get inspiration from and makes it easy and quick to create and share your own. And because BeerCalc runs on the web you can easily access it from all of your devices, without having to worry about syncing. Just don’t expect a lot of bells and whistles outside the recipe creation process. 

BeerCalc is available on the web for free.

Priceless Brew in a Bag Calculator

Brewing in a bag is an alternative brewing method that, unsurprisingly, requires you to put grains in a bag to brew your beer. The advantage here is that you can mash and boil in the same pot, saving you some space and sparing you from getting more and more equipment. Priceless Brew in a Bag Calculator is a free web app you can use for quick calculations when deviating from traditional brewing. It can determine things like your strike temp, how much water you have to pour in, and how many yeast cells you’ll need to ferment your temperature. 

This isn’t anywhere close to a replacement for the other tools here, and it doesn’t aspire to that, and it’s for someone who already has a recipe and wants to quickly calculate some crucial information.
