Why Should You Do The Bandaje Falls Trek?

bandaje falls

The trek is in the remote area of the western ghats. Lies in Dakshina Kannada of Karnataka, Bandaje falls is one of the least explored waterfall treks in this part of the state. A tributary of the Netravathi river forms the waterfall. The  height of the waterfall  is approximately  200 ft.  which is HUGE!

The hike is known as Bandaje Arbi (waterfall in the location language) Falls.

Ballalarayana Durga fort is the first part of this trek; on your way to Bandaje Falls. This fort is not only known for its breathtaking view and

greenery charms, but it’s also an ideal spot for amazing sunsets. Earlier, people used only to cover the fort & return as not many were aware of the waterfall.

This trek cannot be done in a single day from Bangalore, as reaching the base village will take 7-8 hours. Hence, we advise doing the trek over the weekend.

The waterfall is close to the scenic Charmadi ghat and lies around 25 km from Ujire.

  • Location:  Near Durgadahalli, Chikmagalur district.
  • Height:  200 ft.
  • Trek Difficulty:  Moderate
  • Ideal Season:  Monsoon & Winter

How To Reach Bandaje Falls?

Bandaje Falls View

Public Transport:

The closest town accessible via public transport is Sunkasale village. From Bengaluru, you can take a  KSRTC  bus to Mudigere. These are overnight buses and will drop you at Mudigere early morning. From there, you can take a local bus to Sunkasale & then you can hire a local vehicle to take you to the start point.

Private Transport:

If you are travelling in your car, you can reach the start point directly; there are a couple of good homestays where you can stay for the night and start your trek the following day. The distance from Bengaluru is around 290 kms and can take anywhere between 7-8 hours, including halts.  Get Directions.

How Difficult Is The Bandaje Falls Trek? What Is The Trek Route?

bandaje trek homestay

The Bandaje falls trek is moderately challenging. The trek distance is 6-6.5 kms from the  start point , and it takes around 7-8 hours to reach Bandaje falls & return to the start point.

It would be best if you tried to start the trek in the early hours to witness the sunrise from the Ballalarayana Durga fort. The views from this point are majestic, especially during the monsoon months. One can divide the trek into two sections.

Start Point to Ballalarayana Durga Fort:

The trek distance from the start point to the fort is around 3KM and will take around 1.5 hours to reach. This section of the trek is through the dense forest and is a bit tiring compared to the 2nd section, as you gradually climb up till you reach the fort.

Ballalarayana Durga fort to Bandaje Falls:

The 2nd section of the trek is around 3.5 KM and will take approximately 2.5 hours to reach the Bandaje falls. This section of the hike is relatively easy. After the fort, most of the part is walking on grasslands and rolling hills, and you have to descend at the end to reach the waterfall snout.

Important Information

  • Avoid wearing shorts & half sleeves shirts during the monsoons, as you are prone to leech attacks.
  • If you are new to trekking, you should hire a guide from the local village who can help you on the trail.
  • An Ideal Itinerary:  Start your day early from Bengaluru, reach Sunkasale around the evening and rest for the day at a local homestay or go for a stroll to the rani jhari viewpoint. Start your trek the following day by 6:00-6:30 AM, so you have enough time to enjoy the entire hike and get enough time at the waterfall. Come back to the homestay by 2:00-3:00 PM and leave for Bengaluru if you are comfortable driving on the same day.
  • You can ask your homestay to arrange for your breakfast & lunch en route.
  • Carry about 2-3 litres of water as there is no good water source on the route.
  • The  trail route link  for Google Maps.

Commencing at the Rani Jhari viewpoint, the path winds through the historic Ballalarayana Durga Fort, a structure dating back to the 15th century. The entire trek spans a round trip of approximately 15 kilometres.

Planning your journey between November and May is advisable for an optimal trekking experience to Bandaje Arbi Falls. Heavy rains during the monsoon months from June to September make the trek more challenging.

It is strongly recommended to enlist the services of a local guide or opt for a reputable trekking agency.

Commencing and concluding at the Rani Jhari viewpoint, the trek covers a total distance of 15 kilometres round trip. This is a return trek with an estimated duration of 8 hours, accounting for numerous breaks.

  • Starting and Finishing Points: Rani Jhari’s viewpoint.
  • Total Distance : 15 kilometres return.
  • Type of Trek : Return.
  • Time Taken : 8 hours with lots of breaks.
  • Grade : Moderate to Hard.
  • Path: Rani Jhari viewpoint — Ballalarayana Durga Fort — Bandage Arbi Falls — Rani Jhari viewpoint.

The trek is graded as moderate to hard, following the path from Rani Jhari viewpoint to Ballalarayana Durga Fort, then onward to Bandaje Arbi Falls before returning to the Rani Jhari viewpoint.

Despite the absence of camping restrictions, completing the trek before sunset and returning to the homestay is crucial for safety reasons.

About Rani Jhari View Point

Rani Jhari Viewpoint, also known as Edge Point, is a scenic spot near Kalasa in the Chikamagaluru district of Karnataka. Offering awe-inspiring Western Ghats and Ballalarayana Fort vistas, this viewpoint captivates with its breathtaking panoramas.

Visitors can enjoy the beauty of Rani Jhari viewpoint without any entrance fee or specific visiting hours.

Rani Jhari view point 1

How to Get to Rani Jhari Viewpoint?

Access to Rani Jhari Viewpoint is exclusively possible via a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Regular 2-wheel drive cars are unsuitable for navigating challenging road conditions, resembling an off-road experience due to their poor state. To facilitate a smooth journey, renting a jeep from your accommodation is advisable, and many jeep owners affiliated with homestays offer transportation to and from the viewpoint.

For those opting for a trekking agency, these transportation charges are typically integrated into the package, and the trekking agency manages all necessary arrangements for your convenience.

By Public Transport

Public transportation to Rani Jhari Viewpoint is unavailable. However, an alternative option is to walk from the nearby homestays.

About Ballalarayana Durga Fort

Ballalarayana Durga Fort stands as a deserted ancient hill fort commissioned by the spouse of Veera Ballala I, the monarch of the Hoysala Empire. The precise construction date remains unclear, with conflicting information suggesting the 12th century, according to some sources and the 15th century, according to local accounts.

Presently, the sole surviving feature of the fort is a surrounding wall or compound, with minimal remnants of its former fortification. Visiting the fort reveals modest remains, and the prominent feature at the hill’s summit is an orange flag, marking the pinnacle of the hill.

About Bandaje Arbi Falls

Elevated at 200 feet, Bandaje Arbi Falls, also known as Bandaje Falls, is situated in the Charmadi region of Belthangady taluk in Karnataka. Accessible exclusively through hiking, the Falls’ summit offers stunning views of the Ghats and valleys.

Frequently shrouded in mist, the waterfall is often elusive. However, on favourable days with clear weather conditions, the trek to the top unveils captivating vistas of the surrounding landscapes. In the local language, “Arbi” translates to waterfalls, aptly capturing the essence of this natural wonder.

Other Things to See on Bandaje Arbi Falls Trek via Ballalarayana Durga Fort

Neelakunji flowers.

Neelakurinji, a shrub native to the forests of the Western Ghats in the southern part of India, derives its name from the Kunthi River within the Silent Valley National Park in Kerala.

Typically found in Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, these flowers are renowned for their unique blooming pattern, occurring once every 12 years. Our fortunate encounter with these gorgeous flowers occurred while trekking to the Bandaje Arbi Falls.

Kodige Falls

Kodige Falls, a privately owned waterfall, offers an excellent spot for a refreshing dip and water fun. The water, though not shallow, has slippery rocks. Visitors are required to pay an entrance fee of INR 30 per person. Access to the waterfall is exclusively possible via a 4-wheel drive.

Our homestay owner, Sanjay, recommended this waterfall, and he graciously transported us to and from the falls in his jeep. The round-trip jeep ride for the entire group amounted to INR 800.

Is Bandaje Arbi Falls Trek via Ballalarayana Durga Fort Safe for Solo Female Trekkers?

For solo female trekkers, I recommend opting for a reputable trekking agency. Joining an agency ensures a hassle-free experience as they handle all arrangements, including booking homestays, organizing transportation, and providing meals. While I didn’t perceive the location as particularly dangerous, its isolation within the forested surroundings could pose potential risks, making the guidance and support of a trekking agency valuable for safety and security.

Download the Emergency Plus app for any unforeseen situations. The app does not require a mobile network; it shows your location. This is useful to inform the emergency services in case of any emergency. If you are a tourist, always have good comprehensive travel insurance to cover yourself in case of any emergency.

Closing Notes

The Bandaje Arbi Falls trek stands out as one of the most scenic treks I’ve experienced in the Western Ghats. The journey unfolded amidst breathtaking views adorned with vibrant greens and blues palettes. To all fellow trekking enthusiasts, I wholeheartedly recommend embarking on the Bandaje Arbi Falls trek for an unforgettable adventure amid nature’s splendour.

Situated atop a hill of 1509 meters high , this fort stands glorious overlooking the town of  Sunkasale  which is conquered by trekking through the dense forests of the Western Ghats. This famous trek route starts at Mundaje leading to the ruins of the historic fort. This fort is not only known for its breathtaking view and greenery charms, but it’s also an ideal spot for amazing sunsets. During the evenings one can sit here and cherish the peaceful aura and relax under the hues of colours. After we reach the peak, you can rest and enjoy the breathtaking view, devoid of any noises and accompanied by the ever-blowing gentle breeze.

We then trek down to visit the Bandaje falls and make our way back to the base. The Bandaje Falls is locally known as Bandaje Arbi. Arbi is the term used to describe a waterfall in the local Kannada language. It is located in the Charmadi ghat section of the Western Ghats, situated at a height of 700 meters above sea level. It plunges 200 feet from the hilltop and is a surreal sight to behold. The waterfall continues its journey downhill as a single stream to join the river Netravathi as a tributary. The best part about the waterfalls is that the spot is neat and clean and nature wears a gorgeous look in this authentic place.

After refreshing in the falls, we trek back to the base and reach the homestay. With sumptuous dinner, we shall dance, and sing our way amidst the forests of the Ghats, in our “wanderlusty” style!

It is a giant five-tiered waterfall, forming a pool at the base where you can take a dip. This decision is at the discretion of the trek leader. They will decide what is safe for the group.

We will take some time to relax and rejuvenate at the waterfall, then enjoy a local cuisine lunch at a nearby homestay.

After a short while, we will start our journey back. On the way, you will still be reminiscing the moments. You can sit and watch the passing scenery or play games.

Later in the evening, we will take a halt for dinner. After an hour or so, we will reach our destination. It’s difficult to cut the conversations just when we start to open up. What’s life without adventure? Isn’t the real purpose of life to travel, to experience new places, and witness the sunrise from new mountaintops? This thought is what united Jatin and Tarun over a cup of chai, in spite of being from two unrelated backgrounds (CA and IT). They knew each other since the time Jatin was helping Tarun learn the ways of the wilderness through weekend treks and outings with another traveling group. Their love for traveling and trekking together motivated them to start something of their own. Thus was born “Plan The Unplanned”, where travel goals come true. Under the Companies Act, Plan The Unplanned is incorporated as Unplanned Journeys Private Limited They started their journey on unsteady ground, much like any other company, but they shared an infatuation for travel and adventure with their customers, which amplified their determination, and thus, Plan the Unplanned family keeps getting bigger every day! Just about any travel idea can come alive with Plan The Unplanned…treks, adventure activities like rock climbing, kayaking, rafting, backpacking trips across the country, cultural outings, photo walks; everything that fellow travelers need, to explore the great outdoors together. Well now that the wanderlust has kicked in and you can already see a vacation in your nearest future, here’s what we have to offer!

Terms and Conditions

Frequest questions.

Q: I have booked the trek when will I get further updates regarding the trek? A: Well, most of our treks are usually confirmed by Thursday and you would receive a EVENTS HEADSUP mail that would contain details as regards Pickup Points ( Location and Timings ), Outdoor Leader ( Point of Contact ), Do’s, and Don’ts.

Q: Would I be added to a WhatsApp Group once the trek is confirmed? A: Yes, the Events headsup mail would contain a link for WhatsApp Group through which one can join and interact with fellow travellers and outdoor leaders.

Q: Is the trek recommended for beginner? A: Well, the trek level although being moderate is certainly recommended for beginners.

Q: Is it safe for Solo Women Traveller ? A: Yes, it’s much safe and sound. We have been organizing these treks over the years now and we always have had an equal ratio or sometimes we have women in the majority. We also have female outdoor leaders who are on board and lead the other trekking enthusiast. We have made sure our homestay/tent accommodation is separate for men and women.

Q: I've never gone on a hike before, so can I do this one? A: Yes. Ballalarayana Durga might be a good first hike for someone who has an active lifestyle. We encourage some preparation before tackling a hike for persons who live a very sedentary lifestyle.

Q: Is it necessary for me to hire a guide to trek Ballalarayana Durga? A: No. It isn’t as one can fairly see the path to Ballalarayana Durga from Rani Jhari Point.

Q: Do I have to carry luggage all the way during trekking? A: Not at all. You could keep all the extra luggage back at the campsite/homestay and carry only the necessary stuff for the trek (Raincoats, Torchlight, Waterbottle, lunchbox, and your valuable)

Q: What is "Without Travel" option during my booking process? A: Well, if you select this option, all the travel arrangements for your entire itinerary must be managed by yourself, and Plan the Unplanned crew will not be managing anything related to your travel. We recommend you come via car for a smooth travel experience to, from and within the destination. For better clarification call us 9482070194, 8147086083

Q: Would I be able to postpone to a future in case I do not attend the trek on the day of departure? A: We are extremely sorry, you cannot postpone to any future date in case you fail to attend the trek on the mentioned date for any reasons whatsoever ( family/health/work emergencies ). You can write to us at [email protected] as regards and our team will get in touch with you on the same

Q: What about the Ballalarayana Durga trek's cellphone network and connectivity? A: Only at the base will you find a mobile network for practically all major providers like Airtel, Vodafone, Jio, and others. Throughout the journey, you will be outside of the network's service region.

Q: Can we leave the luggage at the homestay? A: Yes, it is possible to leave your luggage at the homestay and carry the necessary things on your trek.

Q: I'm looking for a spot to park my vehicle. Is there parking available? A: Vehicles can easily get to the start of the hike. By road, the base is well linked. Parking is available immediately at the base. As a result, you may park your car and begin your hike directly from the campground!

Q: Is the trail filled with leeches? A: If you go trekking during the monsoon season, you will almost certainly encounter leeches along the way.

Q: Is it possible to camp anywhere along the trail? A: No. Only the area behind the Kalabhyraveshwara temple is suitable for camping. Before beginning the hike, pack your tents and leave them in your cars. Tents are not permitted to be carried on the path. If you arrived by bus, leave your tents at a local's house and ask for them to be looked after at Durgadahalli or Sunkasale before beginning your trip.

Ballalarayanadurga Trek & Bandaje Waterfalls – Weekend Getaway From Bangalore

  • Group Size: 8 - 12

bandaje trek homestay

Hello Trekkers!

Hidden among a blanket of greenery on top of the hills, Bandaje Arbi Waterfalls is a campers paradise in western ghats. The only way to reach the falls is through trekking. It plunges 200 feet from the hilltop and is a surreal sight to behold. The best part about the waterfalls is that the spot is absolutely clean and untouched, largely because of the strenuous trek uphill.

On Day 1 we set on an 8 Km trek to  Bandaje waterfalls  from our base camp. The trek initially passes through a village, a couple of forest streams, after which it becomes steep before entering a dense evergreen forest. The forest is so thick that sun rays will hardly reach the ground. After taking a well-deserved dip in the chilling waterfalls, we indulge in raw nature camping overnight. We will sleep in the tranquility of mother nature and wake up to the unbelievable sunrise glistening through the mist.

We will then continue the trek towards Ballarayanadurga Fort, which is around 5 km distance from the falls. The trek trails are very confusing, one reason why we would opt for the forest guide. Once we ascend the initial forest path, the wide-open Shola grasslands that offer breathtaking views all round will welcome us.

Halfway through the trail that takes us on one of the most beautiful terrains in the western ghats, there is a 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains, that suggests we reached the peak of the mountain. From here, we descend towards the Ballarayanadurga fort which is on an adjacent mountain.

We will explore the remains of a fort that was built during the Hoysala dynasty. It stands as proof of magnificent past and architectural excellence. After this, we shall hike down another 3 Km to the civilization where our vehicle would be waiting to pick us.

One would seldom find a place as peaceful and isolated as Bandaje Arbi Waterfalls and Ballarayanadurga fort. If you seek solitude from raw nature, just book it.

Seasonal Variations

  • June to Sept (monsoon): Monsoons bring the best out of Ballarayanadurga. It rains persistently, filling up the streams and creating mini-waterfalls everywhere. This means we may have to take a dip in the adjacent streams instead of going right under the falls at Bandaje Arbi. But the experience in monsoons is simply amazing.
  • Oct to Jan (winter): Clouds will make way to clear blue skies. Nights will be colder. Plenty of water in the falls to take a shower. Amazing sunsets and sunrises at Bandaje & Ballarayanadurga will continue throughout the winter. Surely the best time to experience the bliss of nature.
  • Feb to May (summer): Mountains get drier and more brownish. It will be hot and humid that can sap off our energy. We usually avoid doing Ballarayanadurga in summer.

CelebWatch: Shatner Gets “Weird” + Pine Goes To “Moscow” + Nimoy Wraps “Fringe” + Quinto On The “Margin”

Shatner pitches "Weird or What" in Cannes

We will find in May if William Shatner’s new sitcom Bleep My Dad Says gets picked up, but one Shatner show that is definitely going on the air is Weird or What , a new documentary series Shatner is co-producing an hosting. The show description press release make it sound a bit like Leonard Nimoy’s In Search Of :

in Weird or What? William Shatner will investigate and analyze all that is weird in the world, including everything from paranormal phenomena to weird and wonderful creatures, from medical oddities to mysterious disappearances, and bizarre natural disasters to mystical monster attacks.

The show has been sold to Discovery Channel in the US and History Channel in Canada. Today Shatner is at the MIP TV convention in Cannes today selling  the show to the world. Variety reports that production company Cineflix has successfully sold the show to "nearly every territory". At the event Shatner described the show:

We’re looking at weird circumstances but we’re presenting them in a light-hearted, jaunty way. We’re not taking ourselves too seriously.

Chris Pine headed to Moscow as Jack Ryan

Last year Chris Pine, the new Kirk, was tapped as the new Jack Ryan, to head up another big Paramount franchise. New details have emerged on this next film based on the Tom Clancy character. Pajiba reports the following story synopsis for the next Jack Ryan film (now with the working title of "Moscow"):

The movie will pick up with the Jack Ryan not long after his stint in the Marines, before he’s joined the CIA, while he’s a Wall Street stock broker, an occupation that will play heavily into the script. In the Clancy novels, Jack Ryan was a successful financial analyst in Baltimore for Merrill Lynch. In the new movie, he will have transplanted to Moscow to continue his financial advising, not for Merill Lynch (which has been absorbed by Bank of America), but for a billionaire employer. It is that billionaire employer who eventually sets Jack Ryan up to take the fall for terrorist plot designed to collapse the U.S. economy. After that, Ryan must race against time to clear his name, reveal the terrorist plot, and save his wife, who has been taken hostage by the billionaire employer.

No word yet on when "Moscow" will go in front of cameras or be released, but probably following Pine’s work on the next Star Trek .

Nimoy’s last day as an actor? + honored as space inspiration

Spock Prime, Leonard Nimoy has recently stated he is ready to back into acting retirement. This would mean his last job as an actor would be reprising his role as William Bell in the season finale  JJ Abrams’ Fringe . And yesterday, Nimoy tweeted " Finishing work on Fringe today. Really good experience. The two parter will air in May." Today he tweeted that his back home. Speaking of Twitter, in just four days TheRealNimoy has picked up almost 33,000 followers.

But Mr. Nimoy is still out and about. On Thursday Leonard is being honored by the Space Foundation at the National Space Symposium in Colorado. Nimoy is being presented with the Douglas S. Morrow Public Outreach award for being an inspiration to people around the world "to explore the wonders of science, space, and technology." And a reminder, next Friday the original Spock is headed to the Vulcan, Alberta, Canada (the official Star Trek capital of Canada) to unveil a bust of himself, and then he is off to the Calgary Entertainment Expo for the weekend.

Quinto on NYSE floor

Finally we come to the new Mr. Spock, Zachary Quinto. The actor is currently in New York  filling out his resume as a producer an actor in Margin Call , a film set in the world of the stock market. Last week Zach tweeted this pic of himself with his Before the Door production company partners.

While he has been in New York, Quinto has been a frequent Twitterer, sending gems like this one last Thursday:

the t-shirt i was wearing today smelled. so i bought a new t-shirt. now it smells. already. why you got to be so smelly t-shirts?

But no worries, Zach was cleaned up all nice by the next night…

Jeez, that photo of Nimoy is fierce! :D

I cant wait to see nimoy and the shat at vegas will miss them when their gone

Shats new show sounds fun–long as they dont make fun of believers cuz that could be bad n sad–

Like a jaunty “In Search Of…”

If I see one more word with quotes around it I’m going to “scream”.

Has Shatner seen Star Trek 11 yet?

How really cares. I don’t. maybe I did at one point. But I don’t now. Let it go. For crying….out….loud

“We’re not taking ourselves too seriously.”

In contrast to some of today’s Hollywood actor wannabees, Shatner can afford to not take himself too seriously. :)

Nimoy looks like an old, and very wise Spock on that photo. Acting retirement surely would be a waste of material…

#6 No, he’s busy having a life. :))

The two shows should be combined to form a show called “Weird Fringe”, and in the first show William Shatner could focus on mysteries of Mr.Spock’s bowl haircut.

Wow whats up with Quinto’s nerdball galsses….First we see a hobo Spock and now dork Spock.

ZQ’s follow up tweet is hilarious!

Nimoy always look cool…kinda badass…you wish Fringe would throw a evil Spock beard on him! Shat looks kinda pudgy…a jolly old type… I was really hoping Mr Nimoy would make it in the new MI movie as Paris…maybe a evil Paris with a beard!

Jack Ryan before Star Trek or after???

From everything I’ve seen of Ben Affleck, he’s pretty impressed with himself. Chris Pine will be 1000 times better than him.

Quinto needs a fashion adviser.

I think Quinto should do a music video as Bilbo Baggins

Alec Baldwin was a great Jack Ryan. Tough act to follow (and I’m a big Ford fan).

16. Yeah! xD lol

Quinto is always dressed stylish, cool and modern- I love it. Zach, just rub some patchouly on yourself and get back to work please!!!!!!!! And Bleep Jack Ryan!

Best Virgin Moscow Mule Recipe

Nov 30, 2019

Wherever there are great cocktail recipes, there are equally fabulous mocktail recipes for those of us who enjoy all the style and taste of cocktails without liquor. In this post, we reveal the best recipe for the Virgin Moscow Mule on the internet! Let's get started!

Introduction

A cocktail is essentially a blend of two or more ingredients of which at least one is alcoholic. As of late, cocktails are getting more inventive with upwards of four and five ingredients.

The Moscow Mule keeps it classically simple with only three ingredients that most of us already have at home. Vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice.

The intense burn of the ginger beer blended with the refreshing sourness of lime juice delights the palate and warms you right up from the first sip.

There are a multitude of practical reasons for choosing a mocktail over a cocktail.

This could include health concerns and diet practices. Or, maybe you're the designated driver and don't want to miss out on a fun night with your social group.

Whatever the reason, mocktails make sure no one is left out.

Most will say that a mocktail is simply a recipe for any cocktail sans the alcoholic ingredient(s), but we're going to show you fantastic ways to enjoy a Virgin Moscow Mule without sacrificing flavor or taste.

Ingredients:

  • Sparkling Water
  • Fresh limes
  • Ginger beer
  • Simple syrup

Instructions:

  • You can either muddle a couple of fresh limes or use freshly squeezed lime juice. We won't tell if you decide to do both ;)
  • Next, combine your favorite sparkling water and a splash of ginger beer
  • Add a serving of simple syrup (1 part water, 1 part sugar)
  • Stir. If you have a shaker on hand, you can also shake the combined ingredients together, but be cautious when pouring as the turbulence may have created a little extra fizz from the sparkling water.
  • Pour over ice

With this excellent non-alcoholic version of the Moscow Mule, you can have guilt-free seconds or even thirds!

Health Benefits

Typically, in every 6 oz serving of the traditional Moscow Mule cocktail there are approximately 180 to 200 calories.

One fantastic upside of making a Moscow Mule mocktail is that with the extraction of vodka (say 1.5 oz) you can eliminate around 96 calories, meaning that a typical 6 oz serving is approximately 100 calories or less!

Layers of Flavors

one whole ginger beside four sliced ginger

Now that we've laid the foundations, it's time to explore the variations and wonderful layers we can add to perfect our Virgin Moscow Mule.  With these alterations, your mocktails are sure to be enjoyed by all!

In addition to following the preparation of the basic recipe noted above, we suggest adding a few slices of fresh ginger to the mix.

To fully extract the flavors of the ginger, consider muddling it with your limes. Be careful to strain afterward, unless you want to be sucking up bits of ginger through your straw and set your mouth ablaze!

Coupled with the ginger beer, this is sure to amplify the smoldering tones of the original cocktail's taste.

Be sure to use ginger beer and not ginger ale. Most commercially sold ginger beer, though fermented, is alcohol-free. It differs from ginger ale in the way it is manufactured. The intensity of ginger essence in ginger ale isn’t comparable to that of the essence in ginger beer.

So, if you decide to replace ginger beer with ginger ale, you’ll be disappointed at the silenced flavors of ginger in your drink. Essentially, what you’d be drinking wouldn’t be a Moscow Mule at all.

Take it from us, use ginger beer!

If you would rather direct your variations or additions towards the sweet and fruity citrus flavors of your Virgin Mule, you can switch out the simple syrup for a fruit-flavored syrup.

Use a lime-flavored syrup if you would like to stay true to the original characteristics of the classic Moscow Mule.

If you're looking to put a spin on your virgin mule, don't be afraid to try any berry-flavored syrup for an extra layer of fruity goodness.

Sugar-Free Options

Not everyone is a fan of sugar and all things sweet. With this modification, the recipe can accommodate those of us who are patrolling our sugar intake due to dieting and/or health concerns.

More specifically, if you're counting calories or looking to steer clear of sugar all together, you can modify the Virgin Mule recipe by using sugar-free syrup.

With 8 grams of sugar in one tablespoon of conventional syrup, the sugar-free option is a great way to go. A couple of dollops of the sugar-free syrup is a guilt-free way to enjoy the sweetness of this mocktail without the guilt.

Depending on your location and accessibility, you may or may not find brands of sugar-free syrup.  All the merrier if you can!

If you can’t find sugar-free syrup, another option is to use flavored sparkling water to add some additional flavour to your mocktail.  Some brands of flavored sparkling water are sold in tasty flavors with no sugar, no sweeteners, and no calories. Furthermore, the carbonation in sparkling water will augment the invigorating fizz of the ginger beer.  Win-win-win!

Serving Time

Just because we've decided to forego the alcohol component doesn't mean we're also forsaking presentation. We 're all about balance in life as well as in mocktails. So, if one component of the drink has been removed, another must be added!

And what better place to embellish then in the presentation?

It's no secret that the Moscow Mule is served in a copper mug . There are a variety of reasons why, and one of them is that copper is trusted to maintain a cooler temperature. In addition, the copper adds a "zing" to the flavor of the cocktail with each sip.

Whatever the reason, we can't deny that a Moscow Mule served in a copper mug just looks and feels right. The same is to be said for a Virgin Mule.

Besides, if we’re talking about looks, no one has to know you’re drinking a mocktail if you don’t want them to. The copper mug will keep your secret!

In lieu of serving your Virgin Mule in a copper mug, you can serve it in any bar glass. With so many types and shapes of cocktail glasses, there really is no reason why you couldn't enjoy your mocktail in a highball, an old fashion glass, or even a martini glass.

Whatever you have on hand should work just fine!

Garnish Like a Pro

Add a lime wedge to the rim and voila!

Want to take things up a notch? Drag the lime wedge along the rim of your glass, allowing the citrus to coat the edge. Turn your glass upside down into a plate of salt or sugar.

Extra points for presentation and added flavor with every sip!

For herb garnishes, clap your choice of herbs between your hands to bruise it lightly and release its essential oils and aroma.  Mint works great!

And here's an extra tip. If you have them, sprinkle a few pomegranate seeds on the surface of your drink! However, be careful if drinking with a straw as those little seeds will get sucked right up! It’s also a beautiful addition to your Virgin Mule, as you can see in the photo below.

We hope this article has been useful in helping to introduce you to the Virgin Moscow Mule! The Moscow Mule is an incredibly versatile drink, so don't hesitate to let your creativity push you to experiment with new variations. And, if you want to take your presentation and style up a notch, make sure to equip your kitchen bar with a few copper mugs !
