Assateague Explorer A+++++ experience
Our 2009 vacation involved a family of seven going to eight states and the District of Columbia in 6 days. It was an awesome experience. We started from Michigan and on our fourth day we were in Virginia. Our visit was awesome. We went on the Assateague Explorer for a superb pony search. We saw so many beautiful ponies. We learned so much about the Island from Captain Mark and his first mate (sorry I couln't make out your signature on the cover of the video I made you guys sign). My niece Cora has read all the Misty books and was so hyped to actually visit where Misty was from. It was such a great time and I think it was the highlight of my whole vacation. Thanks guys for making a little eight year old girls dream come true. She has dreams of growing up and going back to buy a pony. Everyone should experience this tour and buy the video they made.
We were appalled by the lack of safety instruction and control that the kayak tour guides exhibited. The groups were much too large for only two guides, and kayaks were crashing into each other and ramming into other passerbys so hard that the front of one kayak actually went over the legs of the passenger in another kayak resulting in injury. The guide did nothing to manage the situation even after the accident, he sat around and chatted instead of going over to assess the situation. The kayaks were allowed to drift into the nearby dangerous motorboat lane as there was not education about the deep channel buoys. All in all an unprofessional experience that was much too crowded.
On several websites, it suggested that it was best to see the sights of the Assateague island by boat so I decided to take my young family on a sunset cruise of Assateague Island. We were most interested in seeing the ponies and lighthouse. Overall, I would rate the cruise a 3 out of 5. The boat captain (a local) and the tour guide (a zoology student) were both very knowledgeable and nice. Unfortunately, however, the elements were not with us for the cruise. The horses were too distant for pictures and the clouds ruined the sunset. In the end, I did not need the cruise. Earlier in the day, we were able to get much closer to the ponies at Assateague National Seashore and were able to walk up to the lighthouse at Chincoteague National Park. Given that the cruise cost $40 per adult and $30 per child, I did not find the cruise worth the money.
Over the Fourth Of July Holiday, we took one of their 1.5 hour boat cruises. I traveled with my mother and my 4 month old baby. the boat was easy to board and was clean. The operator was pleasant and had some interesting stories. They pointed out many different birds. The ponies were not cooperating with our trip but we did get to see them from a distance. The reason I picked them was they were willing to take a four month old and this was one of the shorter cruises - several of them were 3 or 4 hours long which would have been too long for a baby.
CAPTAIN MARK IS VERY PROFESSIONAL, AND MOST KNOWLEGABLE ABOUT THE AREA. He was a Park Service Ranger, and is a Native of the Chincoteague area. His Grandfather was a movie Star, starring in the area's Famous " Misty" Movie. Capt Mark was the First, to have the Boat tours in this area, and in 20007 the Good Mourning America news show took a tour with him on his Assateague Explorer boat to film the Ponies on Assateague. I have always been impressed on Capt Mark's tours, and he goes to Better, hard to get to, Locations that the other local tour operators who either don't how to get to, or are afraid to go to. I have read the recent Negative comments, that I know ARE NOT TRUE, about Mark's Assateague Explorer, and I STRONGLY SUSPECT them to merely be from his Competitors boat cruise businesses,posing as a tourist review. Everyone should know, that if you want the BEST Boat Tour in the Chincoteague area, then feel Confident to take this Tour with Assateague Explorer, with Capt Mark. You Won't go wrong, and you will be Glad you did. His boat is USCG inspected and he is only one of two operators in the area, to my knowledge to have a MASTERS CAPTAIN LICENSE, not just a SIX PACK license like most of his competitors. This makes Our Families feel much Safer on the boat trips. I also like the Fact that he can take more people on his boat, than most of his Competitors are allowed to take on theirs, so families don't get Split up on tours.
I called to get information about a private kayak tour and could barely understand the woman on the phone. She barely sounded like she even know what she was talking about. I booked a tour for the pontoon boat cruise after feeling a little weary about a kayak experience and showed up. Two other people were on the dock waiting for the same cruise and no one showed up. I called the office and the same lady said, "oh yeah, we cancelled that b/c there weren't enough people booked." No one called me to cancel although I left my number and name while reserving and she didn't even act like she wanted the business. I asked around town and found out that the other cruise companies have been trying to get this tour operator to do better business for a while now b/c he has a reputation for short tours, unfriendly attitude and not showing up for booked tours. Sad, but someone else got my business and I'm really glad I went with them and did not pay this company any of my money.

We enjoyed our boat tour to see the ponies on Assateague Island. Captain Shane was nice and answered our many questions. While we didn't get as close to the horses as we'd hoped, we had a good time and are glad we went. We went in early April and would recommend to others to dress in layers and be prepared for high wind. It got pretty chilly!

We came to Chincoteague for our 33rd wedding anniversary. This tour did NOT disappoint for our celebration. Our guide knew his stuff: from the boat, navigating in weather (really really windy), knowing safety, AND there is the tour, full of information, some history, spots to see the ponies & other Assategue residents, all with humor & being very personable.
Wonderful experience with Captain Shane! April was a great time to see the ponies, which we saw multiple herds of, birds and learn about the history of the island. It was peaceful, serene and exactly what a vacation needs!
Great tour guides to show you the ponies and other wildlife around Assateague Island. Highly recommend.
Horses of Assateague Island in Chincoteague, VA
Such an excellent sunset tour! Captain Shane and Jennifer the naturalist tour guide were awesome! Plus, we saw the horses and a baby horse!! So adorbs! Book with them now, you'll also learn a ton from Jennifer's knowledge of the islands.
Sunset Cruise
We had a great boat tour with Captain Shane! He was very knowledgeable about the area and its history. We saw ponies, sting rays, and even bald eagles!
Since the weather was poor for the sunset cruise we originally booked, the owner allowed us to reschedule for a 9:30 cruise the next day. The guide knew his stuff an made the trip quite enjoyable. We got the see the wild horses, but bring your binoculars.
Saw the ponies, turtles, birds, and a beautiful sunset. Great narration provided during the trip.
we took a sunset cruise with Captain Shane and it was marvelous. We learned a lot about the islands from him and he was an excellent guide. we saw ponies, bald eagles and lots of sea birds. He knew just where to go to increase the chances we could see wildlife. Highly recommend.
We had a very disappointing experience with this company and tour. if it helps, I did reach out with this commentary before posting a review but no one responded - and I called and emailed multiple time. So... review instead, I guess... First of all. I reserved this tour a few days before we planned to go and received no confirmation. In my party, I had a visitor who has mobility issues. I emailed a couple times (your website said to email with questions), to find out the accessibility of the boat. I never heard back. Then the day of the tour, I called and was told that the boat could be simply walked onto. When we got down there from Maryland, it turned out that this was absolutely not the case. Not only would someone have had to walk down 3 small steps, but then literally climb on a milk crate and then back UP onto the boat. Obviously the member of my party with mobility issues could not do this, so she did not attend the tour. Therefore we paid $55 for her ticket and it wasn't used. Then when we were actually ON the tour, the guide really had not much to say. He told us the history of the island is mostly legends and therefore there is no history he can share. Really the only information we got was when we asked questions - and even then, he wasn't overly talkative. He didn't engage any of the guests in conversation. The captain asked where we were from, the guide didn't even do that. We were obviously there to see the ponies. But the guide didn't have much to tell us about the ponies beyond the fact that the pony swim was cancelled this year and last. And that in the 70s they were thought to be dying off so mustangs were donated. Beyond that, I still have no idea why the horses are there, when they got there, and why some of them are sold off every year. I know the captain's family is related to the horse used in the Misty movie because it said so on your website. But the guide didn't bother to even give us this interesting fact. To top this off, the ponies were not seen on our tour. I absolutely understand that you can not control wild animals, so I understand that is a risk we take. but the guide basically had no sympathy for us. He said "every tour is different" and then we just left the beaches where we hoped to see the horses and headed back. We had driven down from Maryland this morning to see the horses, and while I can't control the fact that they were not there, it would have been nice to feel like the guide even cared that we were not going to see the attraction we came for. We were also surprised there was no communication going on behind the scenes to determine if/when the ponies would appear. They did bring us along another island and point out birds (the same ones we could see when we were back on land). So essentially, I paid $55 each for 4 tickets for a boat ride that I could have taken up here in Maryland - or even home in Maine (and one of my guests sat in the dar while we were on the boat because it wasn't even accessible for her). I would not be complaining if I felt I had heard good stories and the history of the horses, the island, the area... ANYTHING. But instead I left feeling both disappointed and unfulfilled. I learned nothing new. I saw nothing new. I felt like we were a burden to the guide - he didn't have any charisma and didn't seem interested in talking to us. And with the big sign asking for tips on the boat, I feel like I had to give a tip for a job I honestly felt was NOT well done. In addition, the attempted sale of merchandise when we were all feeling disappointed and had no connection with the speaker was awkward and unnecessary. Again, while I understand you can not control the behavior of the horses, we left feeling like we wasted a day of our vacation.
