During the month of December, the prices are hiked up because lots of travelers plan their vacations during that part of the year.  You can visit the Andaman Islands anytime between September to May. Travelers who want to enjoy the monsoon can visit Andaman during June and July. During June and July because of rain, the islands are seen in a different way. All water activities are operational throughout the year and on days when heavy rains take place the water activities get delayed or shifted to the next day.

How is the weather in Andaman Island during the time of the visit?

The weather in the Andaman Islands varies from 25 Degrees to 33 Degrees and it's a tropical climate throughout the year. Temperature wise even during peak summers the island temperate is around 30 - 35 Degrees.

Step 2 - How many days are required to visit Andaman?

To give a perspective of how many days are required will share the map of the Andaman Islands. The Andaman Islands are divided into North, Middle and South Andaman Islands. The majority of people who travel to Andaman Islands visit the south Andaman Islands that cover Port Blair, Havelock and Neil Island.

Andaman Island Map

If you plan to cover the middle and north Andaman Islands then you will need 9 - 10 days . Check the tour summary below to refer Day 1 - Arrival at Port Blair Day 2 - Travel from Port Blair to Havelock Island and Stay at Havelock Island Day 3 - Visit Havelock Island Day 4 - Travel from Havelock to Neil Island Day 5 - Return from Neil Island to Port Blair Day 6 - Port to Diglipur (North Andaman) and visit Baratang Island Day 7 - Visit Diglipur Day 8 - Return from Diglipur to Port Blair via Covering Middle Andaman Day 9 - Departure from Port Blair You can extend a couple of days more to do things at leisure.

So basically, the number of days you want to visit the Andaman Islands varies upon how many places you plan to visit during your stay at the islands. Post the above itineraries you still have some offbeat places such as Long Island to cover which in itself requires 3 days.

For travelers who are short of time can consider a 4 days trip to Andaman Islands and cover Port Blair and Havelock Island as per the itinerary below. The first and the last days of your visit to Andaman should be in Port Blair as the only commercial airport of Andaman is in Port Blair. Other islands has to be visited in a ferry from Port Blair

Day 1 - Arrival - Stay at Port Blair Day 2 - Travel to Havelock Island Day 3 - Return from Havelock to Port Blair Day 4 - Departure

Step 3 - Things to visit in Andaman

Now while you are planning your visit to Andaman you will need to know what the best things to do in Andaman are and the major places that need to be visited. The top places in the Andaman Islands are

Port Blair Andaman Islands

Baratang Island

The major locations at Neil Island are  Bharatpur Beach Laxmanpur Beach Natural Rock Formation Sitapur beach Travelers who prefer visiting the islands for water activities should spend more time at Havelock Island as the major activities are done at Havelock. Refer our detailed article about things to do in Andaman Islands to get all details about various things that one can do in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Knowing what you want to do in Andaman is crucial while planning your island trip. Check our some of our best articles about places, beaches, offbeat things in the islands that can help you select what you want to do in Andaman Beaches in Andaman Tourist places in Andaman Islands Offbeat places in Andaman

Step 4 - Get your flight tickets

Flight tickets to the Andaman Islands can get really expensive based on your date of travel. The airport where you land at Port Blair is called Veer Savarkar International Airport and the code is IXZ

Direct flights are available from Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. Connecting flights are available from all cities with intermittent direct flights from Mumbai and Delhi as well.

When you plan your budget for Andaman the flight costs are a great deal. If you get cheaper quotes for flights then your overall package cost goes down.

Approx cost of flight per person from major cities

Chennai (MAA) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights - One Way - 6000 - 9000 Rupees per person

Kolkata (CCU) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights - One Way - 6000 - 9000 Rupees per person

Bangalore (BLR) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 8000 - 12000 Rupees per person

Hyderabad (HYD) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 8000 - 12000 Rupees per person

Delhi (DEL) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 10000 - 16000 Rupees per person

Mumbai (BOM) to Port Blair (IXZ) - Direct Flights / 1 Stop - One Way - 10000 - 16000 Rupees per person

If you see the price flight varies a lot based on the season and your date of travel. The price can sometimes go very high to reach the Andaman Islands specifically from the North part of India. You can connect with the Experience Andamans team to get group flight prices from the below-mentioned cities and as per availability we will share with you the series airfare.

The cities that we have best price to Port Blair are Chennai Kolkata Bangalore

Step 4 - Cost of Accommodation

Now once you know the cost of a Flight from your city, the next is to add the price of accommodation at all the islands that you are planning to stay in the islands as per your itinerary.

The accommodation has to be booked at Port Blair, Havelock and Neil Island

At Port Blair, the cost of the stay is comparatively cheaper than that of Havelock and Neil Island

Budget accommodation - Less than 1500 Rupees per night on double-sharing basis 2 Star Properties - 2500 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 3 Star Properties - 3500 - 4500 Rupee per night on double sharing basis 4 Star Properties - 5000 - 9000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 5 Star Properties - 8000 - 15000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis

At Havelock Island  Budget accommodation - Less than 1500 Rupees per night on double-sharing basis 2 Star Properties - 3000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 3 Star Properties - 4500 - 5500 Rupee per night on double sharing basis 4 Star Properties - 5000 - 18000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis 5 Star Properties - 20000 - 40000 Rupees per night on double sharing basis

Likewise at Neil Island.

The major cost of your trip to Andaman Islands will be

Flight Cost + Accommodation Cost - These two costs will cover around 70% of your total package cost in Andaman Islands

Let's take an example to get an approximate cost so far for your trip to Andaman Islands

Consider 2 Adults are traveling from Chennai and are visiting Andaman Islands for 5 days with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island

Flight ticket cost = 8000 x 2 x 2 (return airfare) = 32000 Accommodation Cost in 3 Star hotels Port Blair = 3500 x 2 = 7000 Havelock = 4500 x 2 = 9000

The total cost of accommodation with Breakfast = 16000

Total cost for your trip so far = 32000 For Flights  + 16000 For Accomodation = 48000

Now we need to consider the cost of Ferry, Transport, Activities and Food which we will cover below

Step 5 - Cost of Ferry to move from one Island to the other

Ferry in Andaman Islands is very important again. Basically you will be landing at Port Blair airport and to go to other islands such as Havelock and Neil Island you will need a ferry that takes you from one island to the other and brings to you back. These ferries are of prime importance in your trip planning. If you select an island to book where the ferry is not on a regular basis then you will end up paying more or you can even end not reaching the islands because of no ferry operational.

Ferry to havelock from Port Blair

The major ferries that operate in Andaman Islands are :

Government ferry - No online booking only counter booking allowed Makruzz Nautika ITT Majestic Green Ocean

Except for the Government ferry, all other ferries can be booked online.  Check the ferry booking details on our website that can be booked online

So the ferry charges approximately 1500 Per Person for each side. Therefore for 2 adults as per our previous itinerary, we will need a ferry from Port Blair to Havelock Island and return from Havelock to Port Blair Ferry cost = 1500 x 2 x 2 side = 6000

Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) = 54000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island

Next we need to discuss about the other cost such as transportation, activities and sightseeing.

Step 6 - Cost of water activities

Once you are sorted with your flight, hotels and ferry then comes the next part of your trip planning is the cost of water activities in the Andaman islands . The major activities that is done in Havelock Island island are as below :

Andaman water sports seawalk

Scuba Diving costs Rupees 3500 Per Person Sea Walking cost Rupees 3500 Per Person Jet Ski ride cost Rupees 700 Per Person Semi Submarine cost Rupees 2100 Per Person Likewise many activities are available at different islands, please check the detailed list of all the water activities in Andaman on our website.

So as per our previous itinerary plan suppose we want to add Scuba Diving  for 2 people then the package cost will add up 7000. After adding the activity the package cost will be

Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) = 61000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island Many travelers add 2 - 3 different activities in Andaman and as per the price the budget of your trip increases.

Step 7 - Cost of transportation as per your itinerary

In this section, we will specifically discuss about the package cost for 4 Night and 5 days. So far we have came down to the below cost

Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) = 61000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island Let us consider the itinerary as below :

Day 1 - Airport Pickup. Then visit to Corbyns Cove Beach and Cellular Jail - Overnight at Port Blair Day. 2 - Travel from Port Blair to Havelock in a ferry and visit Radhanagar Beach - Overnight at Havelock Island Day 3 - Visit Elephant Beach Day 4 - Scuba Diving at Havelock Island and Return to Port Blair Day 5 - Departure

Cabs in Andaman

The cab cost for the above pickup and drop will come approximately to 7000 Rupees for all pickup and drops. If you are taking a 2 wheeler at Havelock Island then the cost only for Port Blair pickup and drop will come to Rupees 4000 and for 2 days two-wheeler will cost you 500 Per day rental with petrol extra. So lets consider 1500 including rental and the petrol.

So overall in transportation, you will be spending approx 6000 Rupees In the above cost entry ticket to Cellular Jail, Light and Sound Show and ferry ticket to Elephant beach are not considered. These tickets for couple will cost around 3000 Per Couple So the revised budget now becomes

Total trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons + Transportation + Entry tickets = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) + 6000 (Transportation) + 3000 (Entry Tickets) = 70000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island

With this we have now come to an approximate cost for your trip to Andaman Islands including flight, hotels, ferry, activity and transport. The last leg is the food cost which will bring you to the overall cost

Step 8 - Food Cost

The final part of your cost comes from your food and personal expenses. Let's consider the average meal cost per person is 500. Therefore for 4 days, you will be having 8 meals in total including lunch and dinner

Approx cost of food equals 500 per meal x 2 person x 4 days x 2 (lunch and dinner) = 8000. Let's keep an upper side for food to be around 10k considering evening snacks etc

Total Final trip cost = Flight + Hotel + Ferry + Scuba Diving for 2 Persons + Transportation + Entry tickets + Food = 32000 (Flight) + 16000 (Stay) + 6000 (Ferry) + 7000 (Scuba Diving) + 6000 (Transportation) + 3000 (Entry Tickets) + 10000 (Food) = 80000 Per Couple for 4 Night 5 Days trip with 2 Nights in Port Blair and 2 Nights at Havelock Island

Therefore we can say that an approximate cost of 80000 will be spent on your 5 days trip to Andaman Islands. The key to planning your trip is to get the lowest deals on flight and hotels. If you get it cheaper then you save a lot more during your trip.

Step 9 - Conclusion

Now, while you got to know what is the break up of the tour and you should plan your trip to Andaman Islands. The above same steps has to be followed whether you are visiting Andaman Islands from any part of India.

Andaman & Nicobar

Andaman Travel Guide_Places to visit in Andaman

Last Updated on: Dec 26, 2022

About this blog: Pristine beaches, clear blue waters and exquisite marine life – This is what we thought before travelling to Andaman. What we got after our visit was much more. This blog is a complete and comprehensive travel guide for planning an Andaman trip. This Andaman Travel Guide has tips for best places to visit in Andaman, best things to do and other important travel information. Read on to know more.

Andaman is a wonder of nature. This archipelago provides a lot of attractions for tourists and backpackers alike. Andaman has some of the best beaches, most virgin natural trails and mesmerising sunsets. The place also has an interesting history and all these reasons were enough for us to plan an Andaman trip.

Radhanagar Beach_Havelock Island

We had always been keener on visiting the mountains. So Andaman, the sea and beaches were quite fresh and lovely for us.

About Andaman & Nicobar Island

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands comprises 572 islands that lie at the juncture of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. Out of these 572 islands, only about 38 are inhabited. The Andaman group is separated from the Nicobar group by a 150 km wide channel known as the Ten Degree Channel.

The Andaman group has 325 islands while the Nicobar group has only 24 islands. North, middle and South Andaman are collectively known as the Great Andaman. The islands include Landfall Island, Interview Island, the Sentinel Islands, Ritchie’s Archipelago, Rutland Island and Little Andaman in the south, which is separated from the Nicobar group of islands by the Ten Degree Channel.

The main islands of the Nicobar group are Car Nicobar in the North, Camorta, Katchall and Nancowry in the centre and Great Nicobar in the south.

Aerial view of Andaman from flight

Interestingly, Andaman Island is closer to Myanmar (190 km) and Sumatra (150 km) in Indonesia than it is to mainland India (almost 1200 km).

The islands are quite unexplored mainly due to the distance and accessibility from the mainland. And that is where the beauty of the place lies.

History of Andaman

Usually, before visiting any place, we look at the history of the place. It helps us to understand the place and people better. Andaman trip was no exception. While delving into the history of the place, I did find out some interesting facts.

That Andaman was a British penal settlement in the colonial era is known to all, but the place seems to have historic evidence older than that period.

  • It is not actually known when the first inhabitants came to this group of islands. It is believed that Andaman had a population over 30,000 years ago. The earliest archaeological evidence dates back to 2,200 years ago.
  • In between 1014 to 1042 AD, King Rajendra Chola I of the Chola Dynasty was the first one to colonize these islands and formed a naval base to launch expeditions against the Sriwijaya Empire of Indonesia.
  • Later the islands came under Danish East India Company and were under them till 1868. Finally, these islands were purchased by the British East India Company in 1869 and they later formed a penal settlement in these islands.

Top Places to visit in Andaman Trip

We realized in our Andaman trip that the place is a delight for both conventional tourists and backpackers alike. The list of places to visit in Andaman is quite a long one, but all these are worth your time. We will start with the conventional places and then go to the offbeat ones.

1. Port Blair

Port Blair is the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Also the largest town, it is also the entry point for all the other islands. So in all probability your trip will start from here.

There are a few places of interest in the town like the Cellular Jail , Samudrika Marine Museum, and water sports complex among others. And if you want to visit a beach, you can head towards the Corbyn’s Cove Beach. You can also enjoy water sports here.

Cellular Jail_Port Blair_Andaman Travel Guide

Things to do in Port Blair

  • Visit the Cellular Jail to see and understand the struggle of the freedom fighters who were sent to this penal settlement for serving punishment. Do not miss the light and sound show in the evening. . It shows the story of the India freedom fighters and how India got independence through the light and sound show.
  • Visit the Samudrika marine museum, water sports complex to enjoy water sports.
  • Visit the Corbyn’s Cove to get a vibe of the beach.

Day Trips from Port Blair

There are a number of day trips that you can do from Port Blair, all of them special in their own. If you have adequate time, you can do all of them, otherwise choose according to your preference.

Chidiya Tapu

Chidiya Tapu is around 30 km from Port Blair and the place is famous for its sunset and bird watching. You can make a day trip from Port Blair to Chidiya Tapu.

Wandoor Beach and Jolly Buoy Island

Jolly Buoy Island_Andaman

These 2 places can also be covered on a day trip from Port Blair. Jolly Buoy Island is a part of Mahatma Gandhi National Park and the place is famous for its crystal clear water and underwater coral reefs. Boats to Jolly Buoy start at 9 am in the morning from Wandoor and come back by 3 pm. So, if you are planning to take a ride to Jolly Buoy, please reach Wandoor before 9 am.

Chatham Saw Mill

Chatham Saw Mill

Chatham Saw Mill is the oldest and largest sawmill in Asia. But this is not the only reason that you should visit the sawmill. The history of the mill starts from the time when Lt. Archibald Blair landed at Port Blair in 1789 to establish a British settlement there, more so as a deportation centre for the convicts. The sawmill was earlier used to cater to the needs of the west.

Mill Timings: 8.00 AM to 2.30 PM except for Mondays and Thursdays.

North Bay Island

Jet Ski_Water sports at Andaman

Take day trips to North Bay Island and Ross Island. North Bay Island is known for water sports. You can do scuba diving, snorkelling, jet ski, sea walk and speed boat ride here. The island is an hour ferry ride from Port Blair Jetty.

2. Ross Island (Netaji Subhash Chandra Dweep)

Ross Island_Andaman

Ross Island is another place that will leave you spellbound. This island was the erstwhile capital of Andaman until 1941 when an earthquake destroyed the island. Ross Island was the headquarters of the Indian Penal Settlement for nearly 80 years.

The island had markets, bakery, stores, workshop, water distillation plant, church, tennis court, printing press, secretariat, hospital, cemetery, open air theatre and others. Today, everything has disappeared except some old dilapidated buildings, which housed some of these landmarks.

Usually, North Bay Island and Ross Island tour is done together in a day .

3. Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)

Radhanagar Beach_Havelock Island

Havelock Island is the most popular island and also receives the highest footfall of tourists and will be a highlight of your Andaman trip. Havelock boasts of beautiful and pristine beaches, turquoise sea and some of the best diving sites in South Asia.

Radhanagar Beach is considered one of the most beautiful beaches of Asia. You can rent a motorbike or scooty like we did and explore the island. We recommend you to spend at least 2 nights at Havelock Island. Havelock Island is also a backpackers’ delight.

Things to do in Havelock Island

  • Visit and enjoy a great time on the beautiful beaches of Havelock Island. Visit the Radhanagar Beach during the sunset and Kalapathar beach during the sunrise. Other beaches are Vijaynagar beach and Govindnagar Beach.
  • Go for scuba diving. As already mentioned Havelock has some of the best diving sites in South Asia. It is better to take a dive from the diving schools that are near Beach no 3 & 4.
  • Laze around the Elephant Beach. Elephant Beach is about 20 minutes boat ride from Havelock Island. With white sand and beautiful coral reefs, the place is an absolute winner. Also, you can indulge in water sports like snorkelling, sea walk and glass-bottom boat ride here.
  • You can also trek to the Elephant Beach from Radhanagar village.

Planning to visit Havelock Island? Here is a complete Guide to Havelock Island with all the details.

4. Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)

Natural Bridge_Neil Island_Shaheed Dweep

This beautiful island is a backpacker’s paradise. The turquoise blue sea waters and golden sandy beaches are a treat to the eyes. Apart from the pristine beaches, there is also a natural bridge at Neil Island. Shaheed Dweep or Neil Island is a small island and you can explore the entire island in a day on a two-wheeler. Like in Havelock, you can hire a motorbike or scooty here too and explore the island.

A visit to Neil Island or Shaheed Dweep can be done in a day trip, but staying for a night is highly recommended. Neil Island was our favourite place in the entire Andaman trip.

Places to visit in Neil Island

Visit the beautiful beaches of Neil – Bharatpur Beach, Sitapur Beach, Laxmanpur Beach and the natural Beach.

At Bharatpur Beach, you will find a diving centre. You can go scuba diving, glass bottom boat ride and snorkeling here as well.

5. Baratang Island

Baratang Island_Andaman

Baratang Island is situated between South and Middle Island. It has beautiful beaches, mangrove creeks, limestone caves and mud volcanoes. Baratang Island is about 100 km from Port Blair and it takes almost 5 hours to reach and the conditions of the road are quite poor. We are not discouraging, but visit this place only if you like to explore the unknown and are not intimidated by long hours and poor conditions of the journey.

Please note that you will need a permit to visit the limestone caves.

6. Diglipur and North Andaman

Ross and Smith Island

This is perhaps the best-kept secret of Andaman trip. North Andaman is yet an unexplored region of the island. It takes almost 12 hours to reach Diglipur by road from Port Blair. But once you are there, you will be mesmerised by the virgin beauty of the place.

Places to visit in Diglipur

Ross and Smith Island

Ross & Smith islands are actually two islands – Ross & Smith joined together by a sand bar to make a single group of islands. The water is crystal clear and the sand bar appears during low tide. During the high tide, the sand bar disappears leaving a trail of water between the two islands.

Lamiya Bay Beach: Lamiya Bay beach marks the foothill of the Saddle Peak, the highest peak in North Andaman.

Mud Volcano at Shyamnagar & Limestone cave at Diglipur: Like in Baratang, you will see mud volcanoes in Shyamnagar in North Andaman. Limestone caves in Diglipur are also known as Alfred caves and located near Ramnagar Beach.

By Air: You will get flights to Andaman from all the major cities of India.

By Ship: If you wish to experience the life at the seas, then you can reach Port Blair by ships that are available from Kolkata, Chennai and Vishakapatnam. It usually takes 4 days to reach Port Blair.

Flights are thus the easiest and convenient option of getting to Andaman.

Government Ferry at Andaman

Island Hopping: How to get around on an Andaman Trip?

Once you are at Andaman, you cannot escape island hopping. There are two types of trips.

Islands for Day Trips

These islands are nearer to Port Blair and you can make a day trip to these islands. Simply head towards the Aberdeen Jetty and pick up an Andaman tour packages operator to make your bookings instantly for  Andaman Honeymoon Packages  as well. Your hotels can also do the bookings for you. Ross Island, North Bay Island, Jolly Buoy Islands are some of these islands where you can make a day trip.

Islands for Night Stay

If you want to visit the Havelock and Neil Island, then you have to go to the Phoenix Bay Jetty . There are Government boats as well as private operators. You cannot pre-book in a government boat. You have to stand in a queue in the morning to book your tickets. Among the private operators, Makruzz is the best.

We had travelled in both the government ships and Makruzz. Very obviously, Makruzz is faster than the government counterparts, but what I liked in the government ferry is that you can simply roam about everywhere in the ferry and can enjoy on the deck watching the endless blue seas.

Makruzz cruise_Andaman Island Hopping

How to get around within the islands?

You can hire 2 wheelers at both Havelock and Neil Island to explore the places. Also, you can get cabs if you travelling greater distances. We had hired a scooty at both Havelock and Neil Island to move around.

Some amazing things to do in Andaman

Water sports in andaman.

Water sports at Andaman_Things to do in Andaman

Andaman is heaven for water sports. Bestowed with beautiful coral reefs and clear waters, the archipelago boasts of the best underwater activities. You can go scuba diving, snorkelling and sea walking. For water sports like jet ski ride, banana boat etc, North Bay Island is a good place. You can also do scuba diving and snorkelling here. But we would recommend you to scuba dive either in Havelock Island or Neil Island.

Scuba Diving in Andaman

scuba diving experience in Andaman

Andaman has some of the best diving sites in the country and this we have been reiterating for long. Well, it is not without reason, because the beautiful coral reefs and marine life is simply amazing. For Scuba Diving in Andaman , we will recommend Havelock and Neil Island.

If you are doing scuba at Havelock, don’t do it at Elephant Beach, but do it at the diving sites near Beach No. 3 & 4. There are a number of operators and you can take a pick. We had done with Barefoot Scuba in Andaman. For Scuba diving, don’t forget to take the guidance of certified PADI instructors.

Where to stay in Andaman?

Places to stay in Havelock_Andaman

Andaman has plenty of options for hotels and in all possible budgets. For your trip to Andaman, we would recommend you to stop for the night at Port Blair and Havelock Island. If time permits, spend one night at Neil Island too. Both Port Blair and Havelock has a lot of options. Diglipur and North Andaman have relatively lesser options. Sio it would not be a bad idea to book beforehand.

Camping at the beaches is not allowed at Andaman unless the resorts arrange it with permission.

What to eat in Andaman?

While at Andaman, it will be a sin not to try the seafood. At Havelock, you will find some great food at Barefoot Bar and Restaurant, Full Moon Café, Black Beard’s Bistro, Red Snapper and Anju-Coco Resto. Neil Island has very limited options in regards to food.

Things to eat at Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)

Is any permit required for Andaman Trip?

Indian nationals do not require a permit for visit to Andaman.

For Foreign Nationals

All foreign nationals required a RAP (Restricted Area Permit) to visit the Andaman Nicobar Islands, which is easily available on arrival at Port Blair by flight or ship from the Immigration Authorities for 30 days subject to availability of valid visa. This is extendable for another 15 days in certain cases with permission and the delegated authority to extend permission is the Superintendent of Police, FRO/CID, Port Blair.

The Restricted Area Permit can also be obtained from the Indian Missions overseas and also from the Foreigners Registration Offices at New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata and from the Immigration Authorities at the Airport of New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.

Recently, to promote tourism in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, foreign tourists will not require RAP for visiting the following 30 Islands in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands:

(1) East Island (2) North Andaman (3) Smith Island (4) Curfew Island (5) Stewart Island (6) Landfall Island (7) Aves Island (8) Middle Andaman (9) Long Island (10) Strait Island (11) North Passage (12) Baratang (13) South Andaman (14) Havelock Island or Swaraj Dweep (15) Neil Island or Shaheed Dweep (16) Flat Bay (17) North Sentinel Island (18) Little Andaman (19) Chowra (20) Tillang Chong Island (21) Teressa (22) Katchal (23)Nancowry (24) Kamorta (25) Pulomilo (26) Great Nicobar (27) Little Nicobar(28) Narcondum Island (29) Interview Island and (30) Viper Island (Day visit only).

Visiting the tribal areas is strictly forbidden for both Indians and foreigners. So if anyone is trying to sell such Andaman trip, refuse.

Andaman and Nicobar Island

What is the best time to visit Andaman?

Andaman can be visited throughout the year. However, the best season of the island is from mid-November to early March. This is considered to be the best season to visit Andaman.

Network and wifi

Although you will get mobile services, the data connection at Andaman is very poor. Internet and wifi services are quite bad here. Both Neil and Havelock Islands had very poor mobile network connection also. So enjoy the place without internet and wifi. We were quite happy to spend a few days without these so-called “essentials”.

ATMs in Andaman

You will find a number of ATMs in Port Blair. Havelock too has a few ATMs near Beach No 1 or the Jetty. There are a couple of ATMs in both Neil Island and Diglipur. It is better to carry cash with you while travelling to Neil and Diglipur.

Beaches in Andaman

Is it safe to travel in Andaman?

Yes, Andaman is quite safe to travel. The island is quite a peaceful place with not many instances of problems of safety. Of late, the news of the death Christian missionary in North Sentinel Island has been going around. Be aware that a few aboriginal tribes have their home in the remote islands of Andaman & Nicobar and they have kept themselves distant from the civilization. They do not take intrusion in their land and life lightly. So as travellers, we would request you not to visit the tribal areas without a guide. Also, most of the tribal areas are strictly forbidden for both Indians and foreigners.

Secondly, do keep in mind about the safety measures at the sea. Do not go out to swim all alone even if you are a great swimmer. Also please adhere to your instructor or trainer while scuba diving and snorkeling. Stay safe and have a great trip.

Hello Agni & Amrita

Thanks for this nice article – very helpful!

I wonder if it’s necessary to book flights from Chennai to Port Blair in advance (December/January) or are there always some seats left?

Hey Alex, thanks for reading our blog. We usually book our flight tickets 1 to 2 weeks in advance (not months!). But usually and hopefully, you will get tickets from Chennai at shorter notice as well. However, prices can be steeper at short notice. Hope this helps. Hey this is an amazing article. Thanks for such valuable information 🙂

This looks so, so pretty! It would be so much fun spending a couple of days island hopping. We would definitely spend some time on all of the different boats!

I didn’t know anything about Andaman but you’ve given me a real education – I love it! I really want a chilled out break somewhere beautiful and I feel like this could be the place. Looks like there is plenty to do and see!

Looks amazing there! I absolutely love the rock bridge, it looks like something that might not stand there forever so you were lucky to see it. Nature is wonderful when it gives us places like these. Hopefully I get to visit someday!

Wow! so detailed and attractive article! Islands are dreams I have in my bones; probably because the hills of my place were Islands in the ancient eras. We found big shells and also a complete whale skeleton in our soil! Very inspiring article thanks for sharing! And also the sentence ““We believe in being wings to each other and travelling helps us in doing so.” is so sweet !

This is quite a comprehensive post about Andaman islands. Frankly, I didn’t know that it would take 4 days to reach Port Blair by ship. Woow! I am planning to visit Andaman soon and I shall definitely start with this article.

I am overwhelmed with so many activities that can be done there! I am pretty sure I will for snorkeling. DId you go for snorkeling or diving there?

Andaman Itinerary For 6 Days

  • April 24, 2022

The far-flung archipelago of Andaman & Nicobar Islands consists of 572 islands, out of which only 37 are inhabited. The islands of Nicobar are off-limits to tourists, and we can only visit a few islands in Andaman. Located in the Bay of Bengal off the eastern coast of India , the Andaman Islands are a sight to behold. Sun-kissed beaches, azure waters, exhilarating water activities, intriguing history, and abundant natural beauty are just a few of the reasons to visit this tropical paradise. Additional attractions include spectacular sunsets, limestone caves, mangrove rainforests, and abundant marine life. In fact, it is an excellent destination for scuba divers and snorkelers as it is home to a plethora of vibrant coral and exotic marine life. This itinerary will take you through the most inhabited and exciting areas of the Andaman Islands.

Suggested Andaman Itinerary for 6 Days

Day 1 of andaman itinerary: port blair.

The only way to get to the remote islands is to fly into Port Blair. Direct flights are available from Delhi , Kolkata, Mumbai , and Chennai to Veer Sarvankar International Airport in Port Blair. Check the flights and connectivity before planning your vacation, as the timetable changes randomly. In Port Blair, there isn’t much to do. However, Cellular jail should be on your agenda. The Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani, was a colonial prison that housed several prominent Indian freedom fighters. The horrifying stories of brutality and depravity are sure to have a sobering effect. There is also a light and sound show in the evening (6 pm-7 pm). If you have time left, you can go to the coconut palm-fringed Corbyn Beach and watch a scenic sunset. Enjoy a leisurely meal and spend the night in Port Blair.

Day 2 of Andaman Itinerary: Havelock and Radhanagar Beach

To get to Havelock (Swaraj Deep Island), you can use a seaplane, a government-operated ferry, or a private ferry. Choose Markuzz Ferries for your ferry transfer since they are spacious and comfortable Catamarans. They offer air conditioning, nice seats, clean restrooms, and a small snack bar. The trip will take about 1.5 hours and will cost close to Rs1400 ($20) one way. If you can’t get tickets in Markuzz, you’ll have to use Green Ocean Ferries, Aashi, Sea Link, or government-operated boats, which are cheaper but have subpar facilities and may take longer.

During this trip, we plan to spend as much time as possible on Havelock Island, which is noted for its clean beaches , lush green forests, and rich underwater treasure. Take the morning ferry (departs from Haddo Jetty) to Havelock and get off at Swaraj Deep Jetty. To get to your hotel, you’ll need to take a taxi/auto from there. Check into your hotel and spend the rest of the day at Radhanagar Beach. The secluded beach is located on the western coast of Havelock Island. The Radhanagar Beach (Beach 7) is ranked among Asia’s top ten most gorgeous beaches, and you’ll see why when you visit. The crescent-shaped beach spans 2 kilometers and has an average width of 30 to 40 meters.  Velvety sand, excellent waves, emerald waters, picturesque sunset, and scarce crowds make this beach a perfect place to relax and enjoy. There are no water sports on the beach. Taj Exotica Resort & Spa is a 1-minute walk from the famed beach. If you can afford the upscale resort, go for it.

andaman trip how many days

Day 3 of Andaman Itinerary: Elephant Beach, Havelock

Today we are going to visit Elephant Beach. A small cruise boat will take you to Elephant Beach from the Swaraj Deep Jetty in less than 30 minutes. The round-trip ferry would cost Rs1000 ($14) per person. It leaves you there for three hours, and you are free to do whatever you choose during that time. The same jetty will bring you back after the allotted time.  Another way to reach Elephant Beach is by trekking. The trail begins at the Forest Camp, which is located 8 kilometers from the jetty. Because the trail runs through dense rainforests, it is recommended that you bring an escort with you on the one-hour trek. You can get a guide for 500 rupees (USD 8). The guide will accompany you to Elephant Beach, assist you while you are there, and bring you back to the Forest Camp. Keep in mind that if you go trekking, you must return the same way you came. You will not be able to go back on the ferry.

Havelock’s Elephant Beach is a great place to go snorkeling. The crystal-clear water, rich coral reef formations, and amazing marine life near the coast provide for an unforgettable snorkeling experience. You’re going to have the time of your life if you love water activities. There’s Jet skiing, banana boats, an underwater sea walk, parasailing, and a slew of other water activities. Except for snorkeling (Rs1500) and parasailing (Rs3250), most of the activities cost Rs600. Elephant Beach is quite crowded and extensively commercialized. If you are not interested in water sports, you can skip going there and spend the day at other beaches such as Beach 2, 3, and 7. The last boat leaves Elephant Beach by 3 p.m. The rest of the day is free to do whatever you choose. If you’re in the mood to venture out again, Beach 2 and 3 have some nice restaurants and beach shacks.

PS: If you want to do scuba diving in Havelock, arrange a morning excursion so you can return in time to explore Elephant Beach. Scuba diving will take around two hours to complete. The diving establishments are located at Govindnagar Beach No. 2, which is quite close to the Jetty. Remember that the last ferry to Elephant Beach departs from the jetty at noon and make your plans accordingly. You’ll have a long day ahead of you, but scuba diving in Havelock is highly recommended.

andaman trip how many days

Day 4 of Andaman Itinerary:  Neil Island

Today we are going to leave for Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep). The Markuzz ferry from Havelock Jetty to Neil Island Jetty leaves at 10 a.m. and takes one hour. Neil Island is smaller than Havelock and has laid-back vibes. The island was inhabited only in the 1960s and has been slowly rising on the popularity charts due to its unexplored coral reefs, picturesque beaches, amazing biodiversity, and lush forests. There are three main beaches in Neil Islands – Sitapur Beach, Bharatpur Beach, and Laxmanpur Beach. Nestled between tropical forests and clear turquoise seas, the beaches look spectacular. Each one of them has its charm.

The sea around Bharatpur Beach is full of corals and schools of fish. It is the only place in the Neil Islands where you can enjoy water sports. However, snorkeling and scuba diving can be enjoyed on all three beaches. Sitapur Beach is also called “Sunrise Beach” as it offers spectacular sunrise views in the morning. The beach is known for its limestone formations. Laxmanpur Beach is a broad spur of white shell sand and you can find an abundance of corals and shells in the shallow, clear waters. The Natural Bridge, also called Howrah Bridge by the locals, is the highlight of Laxmanpur Beach. The bridge is made of natural rock formations. Most of the resorts on Neil Island are located on Bharatpur Beach. Stay overnight on Neil Island.

PS: You can go to Kalapathar Beach early in the morning before leaving for Neil Island to see a breathtaking sunrise. The beach is located on the southern side of Havelock and is approximately 6.5 kilometers from the jetty. It is easily accessible by car, taxi, or bike.

andaman trip how many days

Day 5 of Andaman Itinerary: Port Blair and Ross Island

It is now time to return to Port Blair. The Markuzz Ferry, which runs from Neil to Port Blair, departs at 11:30 a.m. and takes one hour. On reaching Port Blair, we are going to visit Ross Island. The tiny island is only a kilometer from Port Blair and is easily accessible through a 15-minute boat ride from the Aberdeen jetty. The island closes at 3 p.m. for day visitors, so plan. You can still visit the island if you don’t get there in time for the last boat. Ferries depart at 4 p.m. for the light and sound display, which begins at 5:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased three days in advance. Ross Island is closed on Wednesdays.

For nearly a century, Ross Island served as the administrative headquarters for the Indian Penal Settlement. It had all the modern comforts procured by the Britishers until an earthquake struck the island in 1942. The ruins of a church, a bakery, a museum, a jail, a cemetery, and several other structures are scattered all over the island. Ross Island (recently named Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island) exudes a rustic and one-of-a-kind charm.  What impresses you the most is the myriad flora and fauna that can be found on the serene island. It is home to deer, peacocks, and a variety of other birds. The trees have reclaimed the island and wrapped their roots around the crumbling ruins, creating an eerie and intriguing sight. There are no cars allowed on the island, but you can explore the island in a golf cart if you don’t want to walk. Return to Port Blair for dinner and a night’s stay.

Day 6 of Andaman Itinerary: Fly Back

The flight to your next destination would most likely depart in the morning. Pack your belongings and head to the airport. It’s time to say goodbye to the Andamans.

PS: If you have an extra day, you can plan a visit to Baratang Island. However, be prepared for a long and exhausting day. I felt that it was not worth going to Baratang Island.

Things to know before visiting Andamans

  • The best time to visit Andamans is between November and March. The months of April and May can be quite warm, particularly in the afternoons. The weather begins to heat up and become humid in the following months. Monsoon is from June to September , so avoiding that season is better. March to June – 22°C to 33°C, June to September – 27°C to 30°C, October to Feb – 20°C to 30°C
  • Although the islands are in the same time zone as Bangkok, they follow Indian Standard Time. As a result, the day begins very early. Go to bed on time so that you can wake up early to make the most of the light.
  • Ferries must be reserved in advance because they are the sole way to travel between islands. All your carefully laid-out plans will go haywire if you can’t find a suitable ferry.
  • Only private ferries can be booked online and in advance. Government ferry tickets can only be purchased at the counter two days before the trip.
  • Boarding closes approximately 20 minutes before departure. Before that, you have to get your luggage scanned and your tickets verified.
  • Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, caps, an umbrella, flip-flops, a swimsuit, cover-ups, and mosquito repellent with you.
  • The locals are straightforward, honest, and trustworthy.

Andaman Itinerary

  • Getting vegetarian food is not a problem in Andamans.
  • The mobile network is extremely patchy, with no connectivity on smaller islands. For a stable connection, you need to rely on the hotel’s WIFI. The WIFI is sometimes only accessible in the hotel’s lobby.
  • Big hotels accept cards, but you’ll need cash for cabs, small eateries, tickets, and a variety of other small transactions. Payments with Digital Wallets are also accepted in many places.
  • Although there is no Uber or Ola in the Andamans, taxis are easily available. They usually have a set fare for each route and don’t bargain much. You will be offered package deals by most of the taxi drivers you come across.
  • Auto rickshaws are easily accessible on all Andaman Islands. Because the distances are short, it makes sense to choose this less expensive method of transportation.
  • Most beaches close at 5 p.m., and this is strictly enforced by the lifeguards patrolling the beaches.
  • If you are daring enough to kayak through the mangroves at night in Havelock, you will be able to view the bioluminescent plankton that makes the water shimmer every time the paddle dips in the water. The waters are said to be home to a few crocodiles, so go at your own risk.
  • Foreign visitors to the Andaman Islands are no longer required to get a “Restricted Area Permit” as of July 2018. Foreign visitors with a valid Indian tourist visa can now visit the Andaman Islands and stay for the duration of their visa.
  • Onge, Jarawa, Sentinelese, and Andamanese are the four tribes that live on Andaman. They can be fiercely hostile. Do not make interaction with tribals. It is strictly prohibited by the Indian government and is a punishable offense. This is the most effective way to cut off them from the modern world and allow them to carry on with their age-old traditions.

Two For The World

Andaman Itinerary: Castaway on India’s Beautiful Andaman Islands

12 feb 2024 13 apr 2020 | dan.

In this post, we share our 10-day Andaman itinerary and highlights from one of the most offbeat destinations in India: the beautiful, far-flung tropical archipelago of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Tucked between the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea between India and Myanmar, a cluster of little-heard-of islands makes up the remote and beautiful Andaman and Nicobar archipelago.

There are around 570 islands in this ocean-bound outpost, though less than 10 per cent of them are inhabited. Even fewer of the islands are open to tourists, and those are only in the Andaman cluster.

These far-flung stepping stones between continents have drawn people from across the region and beyond for more than 50,000 years. Today, some of the scattered islands are still home to uncontacted stone age tribes, while others blend Asian and subcontinental cultures, and some bear the traces of a more recent European colonial past.

Despite decades of outside influence, and beyond the walls of the upscale resorts, the islands that can be visited by tourists are still mostly low-key destinations, with limited tourist infrastructure.

In that regard, there’s still a sense that the Andamans are flying largely beneath the tourism radar. That said, judging by the extensive building works going on in some of the places we visited, things are changing.

For now though, if you’re looking for a little piece of rustic paradise off the beaten track, where time moves more slowly, life is simpler, the food is delicious and the sunsets sublime, then the Andamans are calling.

Planning an Andaman Nicobar Trip

There’s plenty to think about when considering Andaman travel. Two key questions though are  how long you have , and  what kind of holiday  you’re after.

Despite there only being a handful of Andaman islands that can be visited by tourists, getting around and between them can be time consuming, challenging and prone to sudden change. The more time you have, the more broadly you’ll be able to travel. With less time, you’re better off focusing on one or two islands.

Our Andaman itinerary spans 10 days and three islands:  South Andaman Island  (home to the capital, Port Blair),  Havelock Island  and  Neil Island .

We should note this itinerary is based on our ideal plan rather than our actual trip: for us, sudden severe weather led to lastminute ferry cancellations which kept us in Port Blair longer than planned, and very nearly scuttled our trip to Havelock and Neil altogether.

Fingers crossed you luck out with perfect weather and smooth transport for your Andaman Nicobar trip. We recommend being as flexible as you can though, and ready to change your itinerary if you need to.

How do you get to the Andaman Islands?

To get to the Andaman Islands, most people fly into the capital, Port Blair, from the Indian mainland.

There are several flight hubs, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad. Our Delhi to Andaman flight took around five hours.

Hardier souls than us might consider reaching the islands by sea. It’s a crossing of three to four days from Chennai, Kolkata or Visakhapatnam.

When is the best time to visit Andaman?

The best time to visit Andaman is between October and May, over the northern winter and spring. Summer heats things up from around April.

The Monsoon season sets in between May and September. You can still visit Andaman, but it’s less than ideal as the rains are heavy and often, and the seas can be big, which in turn means unpredictable travel schedules.

That said, this is the tropics and the weather will do whatever it likes, whenever it likes. We visited in October and experienced the ragged edge of a cyclone to the north, which drenched part of our stay and forced us to be more nimble with our plans. That’s travel!

How do I get between the Andaman Islands?

Realistically, the best way to get between the Andaman islands is by passenger ferry. There are Government ferry services and private services run by ferry companies Makruzz and Green Ocean. Government services are significantly cheaper than private services, but tickets only become available a couple of days in advance and have to be purchased at the ferry ticket offices.

With limited time, we wanted to try and gain a bit of certainty by booking our tickets online ahead of time. We did so through Makruzz.

Then bad weather led to a number of ferry services, including ours, being cancelled on the day we were supposed to travel from Port Blair to Havelock. We found ourselves in a chaotic scene at the Port Blair ferry terminal as unhappy passengers from various services converged in an attempt to board later ferries.

After multiple trips between the ferry terminal and the Makruzz offices in an effort to organise passage on another boat, we finally managed to board a ferry the next day before services were cancelled again. We were incredibly lucky, but as we’d lost a day of Havelock time, and nearly weren’t able to get to Havelock at all, it was a solid reminder that it helps to have a backup plan if things don’t go as they should.

Our Suggested 10-Day Andaman Itinerary

Days 1 & 2: port blair, south andaman island.

We suggest two nights in Port Blair at the start of your trip, and one more night at the end before your flight (in case there are ferry delays between the islands).

You only need a couple of days here as there are only a handful of places to visit in Port Blair. Of course, you may wish to stay longer if you’re basing yourself here for some further explorations of South Andaman.

It’s a good spot to get oriented though, and to organise onward ferry travel to and from our next islands: Havelock and Neil.

Places to visit in Port Blair

This rough and tumble port town rises and falls over hills to the waters’ edge in bright, flaking paint and rusty corrugated roofs fringed by lush green tropical vegetation.

The British Raj set up a penal colony at Port Blair in the mid-19 th  century, and the remnants of this colonial period are still starkly visible, at the grim Cellular Jail, and on nearby Ross Island, both of which are must-sees.

One of our fave ways to take in the town, while enjoying some very tasty cuisine, was from the rooftop restaurants at the Light House Residency near the Netaji Stadium, and the Hotel Lalaji Bayview. When wild weather rained all over our plans to explore further afield on South Andaman, we retreated to these spots to marvel at the storms and rework our itinerary.

Port Blair town is the starting point on an Andaman Nicobar trip.

Top Places to Visit in Port Blair

Cellular jail.

Port Blair’s Cellular Jail was the British Raj’s response to Indian rebellion against their rule. It was built to house political prisoners, ensuring the country’s most prominent activists were locked far away, out of all reach.

The original jail, built over ten years from 1896, had seven long wings radiating out from a central tower, and filled with nearly 700 individual cells where prisoners were kept in solitary confinement.

Today, three of the uninviting wings remain and the Celullar Jail is a national memorial to India’s fight for independence.

There’s a nightly sound and light show that tells the story of the jail. We’d love to be able to say whether it’s worth the ticket price but we were rained out of the experience.

Ross Island

This is our favourite site in Port Blair and a must on an Andaman itinerary. A fifteen-minute ferry ride from town, Ross Island is worth at least half a day of rambling to explore and reimagine its haunting, vine-clad ruins.

Ross Island was once an administrative HQ for the British Raj in the Andamans, and a brutal penal colony for political prisoners. It was their forced labour that hacked out and built a settlement on the forested island. The island community had houses, admin buildings, even a church and a cemetery, all connected by pathways.

Ross was abandoned following an earthquake in 1941 and the arrival of the Japanese with WWII. Ever since, nature has been reclaiming her island and today, the ruins of Ross are webbed with tree-roots as the jungle swallows them whole.

Vines reclaim a building on Ross Island.

Zonal Anthropology Museum

In any other place, we would probably give this flaking, faded storehouse a wide berth.

But the collections it houses, and the stories they tell about the long history of the Andamans and its people, make the Zonal Anthropology Museum an important stop on an Andaman Nicobar trip.

The Andaman and Nicobar archipelago is still home to some of the last uncontacted stone age tribes in the world – uncontacted for their survival, but also by their choice. Visiting the islands where they live is strictly prohibited, though people have tried – even recently – to their terrible detriment.

We found just being in the vicinity of such ancient culture an intriguing aspect of our visit to the Andamans. This museum is really the best way to learn about the archipelago’s Indigenous people, as well as the more recent waves of people who have brought their cultures and traditions to the islands.

Exploring South Andaman beyond Port Blair

With more time upfront or at the end of your visit, you might consider arranging a driver or a tour to some of the other key sites in and around South Andaman. These include:

  • Red Skin Island and Jolly Buoy Island  in Mahatma Gandhi National Park, around 45 minutes southwest of Port Blair. These gorgeous tropical islands and their crystal clear waters are alternately open to day visitors for 6 months each, giving the other island time out to recuperate. Entry is by permit only.
  • Chidiya Tapu Beach  – Around half an hour south of Port Blair, this is a popular little gathering place by the water. We spent our last afternoon of Andaman sightseeing here, hoping for one of the epic sunsets the beach is renowned for. If we’re honest though, compared to other Andaman beaches, we found this one a little underwhelming. Plus there are crocodiles in the water, so swimming is off the cards. Still, it’s a nice enough spot to settle back for an hour or two of people watching with a chai.

Andaman Sightseeing: Clouds build over Chidiya Tapu

Should you visit Baratang Limestone Caves? Baratang Limestone Caves are around 110km north of Port Blair on Middle Andaman, and are touted as a popular day trip from the capital. Tour descriptions say it involves a very early start from Port Blair, a long, bumpy ride through the interior jungle of the island and a boat trip through mangroves to the caves. Baratang was originally on our Andaman itinerary before heavy rains ruled it out. On investigating further, we weren’t disappointed. The tour to Baratang involves travelling along the Andaman Trunk Road, an illegal route carved right through the middle of the tribal lands of the Jarawa people. India’s Supreme Court ordered the road closed back in 2002, to limit the increasing exposure of the Jarawa to the outside world and to minimise the risk of disease, exploitation and abuse. Unfortunately, the road remains open, and while there are efforts to minimise contact by tourists and workers passing through, there are plenty of references online to this part of the journey being like a ‘human safari.’ For the sake of the Jarawa and their health, wellbeing and dignity, we recommend skipping Baratang and any other sites requiring passage along this road, until there’s a legal, considerate alternative route available.

Days 3 – 6: Havelock Island

We spend four nights on Havelock, travelling to the island by ferry from Port Blair.

Havelock Island is the most popular tourist island in the Andamans, and while there are plenty of Havelock Island resorts, it’s still low-scale enough to feel like tourism hasn’t got a solid foothold yet. There was plenty of construction underway when we visited though, so it’s really just a matter of time before it does.

There are just two main roads on Havelock. Even so, we found it very easy to leave the busy main stretch behind and go zipping through the hinterland on hired mopeds, called ‘scooties.’

Havelock boasts some superb beaches and – along with Neil Island – serves up spectacular sunsets, some of the most impressive we’ve ever seen.

There are pretty beaches to laze on and turquoise waters to snorkel. For the adventurous, there’s the jungle trek to Elephant Beach. And for scuba junkies, it’s said there’s some of the best diving in the world. In fact, it was scuba diving that first put the Andamans on our bucket list.

There’s plenty to fill four days on Havelock, but if you’re just here to chill, choose your beach and settle in.

Here are some of the main things to do in Andaman’s Havelock Island.

Havelock’s East Coast Beaches

Havelock’s main road runs along the east coast, and there are a couple of lovely beaches backed by jungle, where early risers can greet the sunrise.

Really though, even if you like a sleep in, the pearly white sands and crystal waters of  Vijay Nagar Beach  and  Kala Pathar Beach  are perfect for sunbaking at any time of day, though swimming is best left for when the tide is in.

As we discovered, the tides go way, way out on this side of the island, leaving skies that go on for absolutely ever.

Places to visit in Andaman: Vijay Nagar Beach with the tide out.

Sunset at Radhanagar Beach

A vast swathe of white sand on Havelock’s west coast, backed by vivid green forest, Radhanagar Beach is renowned for its sunsets. And by renowned, we mean this is one secret that’s well and truly out. Radhanagar is one of the most popular places to visit in Andaman.

We made our way here one afternoon and found the beach absolutely heaving with people. Still, it’s large enough that you can wander away from the masses, who tend to crowd directly in front of the beach entrance.

A meander north brings you to pretty Neil’s Cove, while part way along the beach, a pathway into the trees pops out at the upmarket Barefoot at Havelock resort. We dropped in for a drink at the hotel bar here while we waited for the sun to drop a little lower.

Things to do in Andaman - Sunset at Radhanagar Beach on Havelock

Trek to Elephant Beach

The secret retreat of Elephant Beach is on Havelock’s northwest coast, a stunning stretch of white sand and clear water. It’s only accessible via a 2km hike along an elephant logging trail. The trackhead is signposted off Road 4, which crosses the island to Radhanagar Beach.

It isn’t a long hike to Elephant Beach, but take note of the weather before you go. We set out on the trek but were forced to turn back thanks to serious bogs created by recent rains. We persisted until we were covered in mud and couldn’t move without slipping or being sucked into quagmires. It was a laugh, but hard and messy work at the time.

If you plan to do the hike, be prepared – take a hiking pole if you can and wear shoes you don’t mind being caked in mud.

Scuba Diving Havelock Island

Word is the Andaman Islands have some of the world’s best dive sites, and it was this endorsement that first had us considering an Andaman Nicobar trip.

Diving is also offered on Neil Island, but we opted to do a couple of days’ diving from Havelock. There are around 25 dive sites scattered around the island, with macro diving a highlight.

Unfortunately for us, a trifecta of temporary restrictions on Andaman boat diving combined with churned up waters from the recent cyclone to the north and a stormy second day, meant our dives were limited to sites close to shore in less than stellar conditions.

Our dive guides were outstanding though and did their absolute utmost to give us the best experience they could.

It’s definitely worth doing a couple of dives while you’re here. If you’re a more experienced diver, we recommend contacting the dive centres ahead of time for more information about the sites and opportunities available.

We search out diving experiences wherever we can. Check out some of our other global  diving adventures here .

Days 7 – 9: Neil Island

We spend three nights on Neil Island, travelling to the island by ferry from Havelock.

Tiny, low-key Neil Island turned out to be the highlight of our Andaman itinerary. Slow-paced, rural, rustic and remote, it was here that we felt like true castaways.

We spent our days chilling on the beach, paddling and spotting iridescent manta shrimp in crystal clear waters, sampling delicious Indian curries, and cruising through the emerald green countryside on scooties.

Without fail, the end of the each day found us on the western shore with cameras and tripods. The sunsets here are without compare.

Andaman Itinerary - Sunset on Neil Island

Our Highlights on Neil Island:

Sunset point, laxmanpur beach.

This curving stretch of white sand and rocky shoreline points to the horizon on the northwestern tip of Neil. Fittingly named Sunset Point, it’s a magnet for just about every tourist on the island come the end of each day. It’s a beautiful spot at any time though, and good for swimming and snorkelling.

As the only Western tourists on the beach, we attracted plenty of attention too when we visited, and spent much of the final hour of daylight chatting with locals and taking part in selfie group shots.

Laxmanpur II Beach

Tucked around the corner from sparkling Laxmanpur Beach, the rocky shoreline of Laxmanpur II stretches away to the south, accessible only at low tide. It turned out to be our favourite spot on Neil Island.

Speckled with deep rockpools full of fascinating sea creatures, backed by green jungle, and split by a soaring natural rock arch, Laxmanpur II is much more than just a great spot to watch the sun go down.

But it goes without saying, the sunsets are truly spectacular. Just be sure to check the tides so you don’t end up stranded.

Andaman Nicobar Trip: Laxmanpur II Beach on Neil Island

Sitapur Beach

This was our local beach during our stay on Neil Island: an eye-catching bay on the east coast with interesting rock formations, turquoise water, and a lush, jungley backdrop. Huge kapok trees fringe the coast here, making for lovely forest wanders.

While it’s a great beach for whiling away the hours at any time of day, Sitapur Beach is also Neil Island’s most popular spot for watching sunrise. We made our way down here each dawn, bought a freshly brewed chai from the local pop-up chai guy, and settled in to greet the day.

Places to visit in Andaman - Forest backing Sitapur Beach on Neil Island

Exploring the countryside

While you can cover Neil Island pretty quickly by scootie or bicycle (the island is less than 14 square kilometres), getting out each day for a ride through the lovely green landscape was a highlight for us.

It also gave us a chance to search out roadside restaurants, and we ate some of our best meals in these little family-run establishments.

We also enjoyed heading into town in the evenings to visit the small but bustling market (Neil Island grows most of the region’s fruit and veg), and stop for a snack of chai and gulab jamun (Indian donuts).

Exploring by scootie is a highlight of an Andaman tour itinerary.

Day 10: Return to Port Blair

It’s good to have some extra time to get back to Port Blair, just in case there are ferry delays.

We had no problems for the return journey, and arrived back in Port Blair in the early afternoon.

So we took the opportunity to hire a car and driver for one last stint of Andaman sightseeing: a trip to Chidiya Tapu Beach in the island’s south (see our entry on this spot under Days 1 & 2 above) and a final Andaman sunset.

The next day, we farewelled this unique little Indian archipelago, and flew back to Delhi.

Thanks so much Prapti! We hope you’ve found it useful. If you’re headed to the Andamans, have a fantastic time!

hey, a perfect itinerary that I was looking for. A relaxed and adventurous both with absorbing the local culture. I would like to know when did you visit the island?

Hi Karan, thanks for your message. We travelled to the Andamans during the month of October, and October to May is said to be the best time to visit. That said, we did still encounter some wild weather and had to be flexible with our travel plans as a result. That’s travel though – we still had a great time. Hope you get to visit! All the best!

Thank you author for your beautiful article. Keep it up.

Thanks so much, glad you liked the post.

Can you suggest some good hotels to stay in all three places – Port Blair, Havelock and Neill Island. Where did you guys stay and how was it? Thanks!

Hey Shobhit, we went pretty low-key with our stays in the Andamans. On Neil & Havelock, we stayed at the Emerald Gecko beach huts – very basic, great locations. We got around on hired scooties. In Port Blair, we found a bed and breakfast but it was out of town and with hindsight, we’d have stayed nearer to the centre. Good luck with the trip planning and happy travels! ~Dan

Hi Dan & John, Wonderfully described itinerary and your adventures in Andaman. This is exactly what I was looking for to plan my trip to the islands this December. Appreciate the small details you provided about the Limestone Caves and its legality and the diving tips on Havelock and Niel island. Looking forward to this trip!

Hi Shobhit, thanks so much for your feedback, really pleased you’ve found the post helpful! And very excited to hear you’re visiting very soon – look forward to hearing about your adventures!

You haven’t mention mud volcan,..Amrapali Beach, Ramnagar Beach Ross n Smith Iceland etc..

Hi Anand, thanks for your feedback! So much to see in the Andamans – we hope to get back one day and visit your suggestions so we ca. Write about them too!

Hi Dan & John, I really enjoyed going through this as you shared your planning and Experiences amazingly. Though I’ve been to Andaman and it is simply awesome. what I find more amazing is Andaman won’t leave you, its beauty and Serenity calls you. Just in case if you want to read my experience, you’re most welcome. Cheers

Hi Madhuri, thanks so much for your kind words, glad you enjoyed reading our post about the beautiful Andamans – it is most certainly a corner of the world that stays with you. Happy travels!

Hello, Information about all such places are available anytime on Tourism website if you google more can be found about what all you have shared but what is interesting about your Guide to these places is your first hand experience, As for any traveler or tourist First hand experience of other traveler is always more authentic then reading on Google or Govt.Tourist website,

so thanks for sharing your wonderful journey but what I wonder is what is keeping our Govt.from exploring & developing these Islands for Increasing Tourists from Around the Globe when there is such huge Potential lying there

Personally for Me -The life time Adventure would be Seeing Those Primitive People or As You Mentioned “Stone Age Clan” “The Children Of Nature” who are Luky & Save to Enjoy the Real essence of Beautiful Earth And Till Date Have Not Been Victim To Greed Of Evolution That Leaves No One Who’s not Evolved with it & more Luky are the ones who are not been Hunted by Modern Ugly Materialistic Humans”

“Looking Forward for more of your Adventures-Good Luck”

Hey there Ramman,

Thanks so much for leaving a comment. We’re really glad to hear you enjoyed reading about our experiences in the beautiful Andamans.

I guess for Government’s it’s always hard to strike the right balance between promoting tourism and the risk of overdevelopment. We loved the laid back, low-key vibe in the Andamans and feel like the balance is about right.

The closest you’ll be able to get to the indigenous peoples of surrounding islands will be the wonderful the Zonal Anthropology Museum where you can find plenty of information and exhibits about the local tribes.

The islands they live on are thankfully off-limits to tourists to protect their health, wellbeing, and culture.

All the best Dan and John

I am planning to visit Andamans later this month. This is my first time planning all by myself instead of going with a tour company. I am so confused with how many days to dedicate to a place and what all to plan and when. It is all so overwhelming. Your post is quite detailed and has given me a fair idea of how I should plan. Really appreciate you giving all the little details. 🙂

Hi Pooja, thanks so much for your kind comments, we are so pleased to hear our Andaman itinerary was useful for your planning.

We’d love to hear how your trip goes, so please feel welcome to share your own experience and any recommendations you might have here.

Regards Dan and John

I am from Andaman and Nicobar Islands. You missed some beautiful spots like rose and Smith island and there is trekking spot in Andaman. You can also visit the rangat and mayabandar island. port Blair to digilipur car trip is also awesome experience.

Hi A, thanks for sharing some other highlights of this beautiful archipelago. We hope to come back one day with more time to explore further!

When is the best time to visit and what is the approximate budget for 4 night stay?

We think the best time to visit is between October and May, and we’d be inclined to avoid the Monsoon season, which sets in between May and September.

In terms of costs, it really does depend on your preferences as you can find accommodation from budget to high end, and found other costs, such as food, scootie hire, and diving to be quite reasonable.

Cheers, and happy travels. Dan and John

A very interesting description of Andaman Islands and its beautiful beaches. Pl also mention the approximate expdr of 10 days visit to Andaman.

Hi there K, thanks for your feedback! The great thing about the Andamans is that the islands cater for travel at all budget points, so the cost of a 10-day visit really depends on personal budget and interests. Hope you get to visit!

I thought we were pretty much done with India but Andaman and Kerala are still missing. Thanks for this detailed write up. Surprised you didn’t mention any recommended accommodations. It looked surprisingly clean in you video.

Hi Ksenija, thanks so much for the feedback! We hope you get to Kerala and the Andamans one day – we reckon you and Mirek would definitely appreciate both. We are planning to add some info on where we stayed once lockdowns are over and places start opening up again. We stayed in cabins run by the same company on both Havelock and Neil and they were very rustic….so rustic in fact, we’re watching closely to see if they do reopen. We really hope so! Cheers, Dan & John

A first-timer’s guide to India’s Andaman Islands

Isabella Noble

Oct 29, 2019 • 7 min read

andaman trip how many days

Glittering salt-white beaches washed by teal shallows, swirls of ancient, often-impassable jungle, hot-pink sunrises over spindly coconut palms – the Andaman Islands , scattered like pearls in the twinkling Andaman Sea, remain a tantalising mystery to most travellers.

Two men paddle in the shallows of an otherwise empty beach on Havelock Island, which is part of the Andaman Islands archipelago. The white-sand beach is backed by forest.

Remote and still a challenge to reach, the dreamy Andamans lie geographically closer to Myanmar and Indonesia than the rest of India (1370km to the west), and are populated by both South and Southeast Asian settlers, and (sadly threatened) indigenous tribal communities. Together with the off-limits Nicobar Islands (south of the Andamans), the archipelago comprises 572 islands, with just a handful accessible to visitors. Those that do make the long journey here will find an alluring laid-back vibe, a compendium of India’s best beaches and some of the finest diving and surfing in Asia.

Considering a visit? Covering everything from how to get there to where to stay, here’s our guide to visiting the Andaman Islands for the first time.

A group of Indian children playing in the shallow turquoise waters near the Havelock Island jetty.

How to get to the Andaman Islands

There are no international flights to the Andamans, so you’re looking at a domestic flight into Port Blair from mainland-India cities such as Chennai , Hyderabad , Mumbai , Delhi or Bengaluru . It's also possible to reach the islands via the original route: by sea. A few ferries rattle across the Bay of Bengal to Port Blair from Chennai, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam , though timings are unreliable and distances long.

The requirement for foreigners to have a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to visit the Andamans was overturned in 2018. Now travellers can visit 29 inhabited and 11 uninhabited islands without permits, including Havelock Island, Neil Island, Long Island, North Andaman, South Andaman, Middle Andaman and Little Andaman (though always excluding tribal areas).

Best time to visit the Andaman Islands

December to March are the top months for warm, sunny weather, good transport links and the best diving conditions, and you’re also likely to spot turtles nesting on Middle and North Andaman. The shoulder months of October, November, April and May are less reliable weather-wise, though accommodation prices drop, crowds are down and there’s consequently less strain on the natural environment.

The shell of an old Protestant church built of stone masonry, with windows made from Burma teak, that still stands on Ross Island in the Andamans. The church is missing its roof, and through the hole - and window gaps - the green jungle is visible.

An overview of each of the islands

Everyone’s first (ahem) port of call is the bustling provincial capital Port Blair , on South Andaman. While in town sorting out travel arrangements, it’s worth exploring the chilling British-built 1906 Cellular Jail National Memorial , where political prisoners were once held, and the jungle-wreathed Victorian British–style ruins on Ross Island (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep), the islands’ colonial-era administrative headquarters until 1941. But the best of this region is out in the wild: the 280 sq km Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park is a popular day trip from Port Blair (permit required).

Where to stay: Andaman Homestay , Port Vista and Lalaji Bay View are reliable budget-to-midrange picks. Towards the upper end, go for Fortune Resort Bay Island or Sinclairs Bayview , both with sea panoramas.

Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)

When people rave about the Andamans, they’re often talking about dazzling Havelock Island , the most developed of the islands. Silky beaches backed by thick rainforest melt into sparkling turquoise water, and the diving and snorkelling here rival the very best in South Asia. Established operators such as Dive India , Ocean Tribe and Barefoot Scuba lead you through underwater depths to spot wrecks, sharks, rays, turtles, schools of snapper and more.

Post-diving, laze away your days catching the sunrise at Kalapathar , swimming at sheltered Neil’s Cove and strolling along fabulous Radhanagar , one of Asia’s most spectacular beaches, before settling in for home-cooked Indian-international dinners, perhaps at Full Moon Café or Anju-Coco Resto . For something more active, hike into the lushly forested interior and to Elephant Beach , or join a kayaking expedition through the mangroves.

Where to stay: Eco-conscious British-run Jalakara offers boutique seclusion, a seductive infinity pool and seven uniquely designed rooms amid betel-nut trees and banana palms. Just back from Radhanagar’s sands, ecofriendly island original Barefoot at Havelock has graceful bamboo, timber and tented cottages. Budget-friendly haunts include Emerald Gecko’s beachside huts; Flying Elephant , with its bungalows overlooking electric-green rice paddies; and backpacker favourite Green Imperial . Most dive schools have simple accommodation.

A huge, admittedly slightly terrifying, spotted fish swims towards a diver off the coast of Havelock Island. In the background a reef is visible with smaller fish swimming around it.

Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)

A few notches down in busyness from its sister Havelock just north across the water, Neil Island is a delightfully easy-going, pancake-flat world of rice fields, palm trees, rocky beaches, a small bazaar and a sleepy jetty that leaps into action when ferries arrive. Budget travellers head here for the rustic beach-hut vibe that originally lured people to Havelock (though mainstream tourism is on the rise on Neil, too). While Neil’s beaches aren’t fantastic for swimming, there’s excellent diving courtesy of pioneering schools like India Scuba Explorers and Dive India (you might even spot a dugong!).

Where to stay: Fuss-free bungalows such as Emerald Gecko , Breakwater Beach Resort and Kalapani epitomise all that’s wonderful and laid-back about Neil. Waterside SeaShell is arguably the island’s most upmarket stay.

Little Andaman

The kind of deliciously isolated place mentioned in hushed whispers among enamoured travellers, Little Andaman is the southernmost island that it's possible to visit in the Andamans. It's bordered by powder-soft, sun-dusted white beaches, tangles of mangroves and tumbling teal waves that make for some of India’s most terrific surf, especially at sweeping Butler Bay and from February to April. Around 130km south of Port Blair, Little Andaman suffered serious casualties during the 2004 tsunami, but has since bounced back and now ranks among the most enticing destinations in the Andamans. Around 25 sq km of the island is a protected, off-limits tribal reserve for the indigenous Onge people.

Where to stay: Most accommodation is of the budget beach cottage genre; try Hawva Beach Resort or Ieshika Resort, just back from Netaji Nagar beach. Many guest houses rent surfboards.

Middle & North Andaman

Few travellers tackle the long journey north from Port Blair to Middle and North Andaman, but venture here and you’ll uncover outstanding snorkelling, pristine honey-gold beaches, impenetrable primeval jungle, a world-renowned turtle-nesting site, a string of eerie limestone caves, a smattering of serene offshore islets, and much more.

Kalipur beach  (just outside the Andamans’ second-largest settlement, Diglipur, in far North Andaman) is believed to be the only place in the world where leatherback, hawksbill, olive ridley and green turtles nest on the same coastal stretch (mid-December to March or April). There is simple accommodation at Kalipur, from where hikes up the Andamans’ highest mountain, 732m-tall Saddle Peak , can also be arranged.

In the remote area around Mayabunder, on Middle Andaman, you can stay amid glinting rice fields with a local conservationist family at self-sufficient Ko Hee Homestay , heading out on wildlife-spotting treks and learning about traditional crafts. Or get away from it all with a spell on quiet, untouristed Long Island, just off Middle Andaman, where bamboo-clad Blue Planet is the only place to stay.

A view of a rock formation on the beach of Neil Island. The rock has been eroded to form a large arch, spanning a section of the rocky beach.

Getting around

Once you’ve made it to Port Blair, the only way to reach most of the other islands is by ferry. Government ferry tickets are released just three days ahead (it can be a scramble at ticket offices!); tickets aren’t available online and you’ll need to ask locally for schedules (there’s an information office at Port Blair’s Phoenix Bay Jetty). Buses trundle north from Port Blair through Middle Andaman and on to Diglipur on North Andaman – cheap, though time-consuming!

Thankfully, Havelock and Neil are also linked to Port Blair and each other by private ferries operated by Makruzz , Green Ocean , Sea Link and ITT Majestic ; these usually open for bookings (including online) at least a month ahead, making them the easiest option for travellers. On most islands, hiring your own bicycle or motorbike is the best way to explore.

Visiting the islands responsibly

The Andamans’ fragile ecosystems and small, isolated communities remain seriously at risk from tourism (and other) development. Divers and snorkellers can help by choosing environmentally responsible operators, ensuring reefs aren’t damaged (by flippers, or by touching marine life etc), while more general practices include minimising single-use plastics, clearing any rubbish encountered, not removing shells from beaches, and supporting hotels, shops and restaurants committed to a green ethos. If you’re looking to donate your time, the NGO Reef Watch Marine Conservation accepts volunteers.

Meanwhile, for both safety and dignity, the islands’ indigenous tribal communities live in regions off-limits to visitors. Heartbreakingly, many groups have become extinct in the last century, and there are serious repercussions for anyone caught trying to access these restricted areas.

It’s also worth noting there have been several fatal crocodile attacks in the Andamans in recent years: check locally as to where it’s safe to swim and keep out of the water at dawn and dusk.

This place offers spectacular photo ops - a boat hooked to a bench, a tire hung to a tree! This beach has some of the best restaurants of Havelock Islands located close by - Fat Martin, Venom Bar are some good options to explore.

Day 7 - Neil Islands

Make sure to book your ferry ticket from Havelock to Neil islands at least 2 days in advance. Private ferry tickets can be booked online (make sure you book these prior to booking your hotel). Ultimate Andaman Holiday Planning Guide

Plan your andaman trip with us..

You’ve decided on a trip to the Andamans, it’s locked and final; but you want to know about all the many things to take into consideration to make for the Ultimate trip. We get ya, nobody wants to be taking any chances with their precious and numbered vacation days! This is exactly why we’re going to give you the full scoop on every little detail to keep in mind while you plan & book your trip to the Andamans.

Read on to know more!

andaman trip how many days

How to plan the Ultimate Trip to the Andamans?

Step 1: pin down on what you want your trip to look like.

What your trip looks like often boils down to the intent behind your trip and the type of traveller you are. Your intent could be adventure, a honeymoon, an anniversary with your partner, some quality family time or plain ole alone time. A lot of your vacation decisions rest on this intent.

Here are some bite-sized takeaways for different types of travellers:

For the romantics:

More Havelock + Neil, less Port Blair should be your go-to mantra. If you’re looking at about a week, the ratio can be 6:1. Nothing says romantic like a beach-side resort with swaying coconut trees and an open-aired bar. Look for an upper-category room to ramp up the oomph factor.

Read more about how you can plan the most romantic trip here.

For the adventurers:

Do not miss out on the breath-taking scuba-diving experiences you can have in the Andamans. The best places to dive are: Havelock, Neil & Chidiya Tapu, Port Blair. If you’re an experienced diver, looking to organise a dive trip to more remote locations like Barren Island, seasoned dive shops like Lacadives will be happy to help you with it. You’ll have to call at-least 1-2 months in advance and book it, since it’ll require special permits that could take time to come through. Look up & book other activities before you go, these could include: kayaking, sea karting, jet skiing, para sailing, sea walking, snorkelling & trekking.

Click here for the Complete Guide to Scuba Diving in the Andamans.

For the family traveller:

Mix it up with some culture and adventure. You can split your time equally between Port Blair, Havelock and Neil. Do look for properties with pools, because no family vacation is complete without pool games. If you’re a large family, you can approach hotels for a group rate and even book a private party space in advance!

For the solo traveller:

The nicest part about going solo is the freedom to set your own pace and to explore off-beat places. So, if you’re keen on something like this, look up lesser-known islands like: Long Island, Ross & Smith, Little Andaman and Rutland. You’ll find yourself transported backwards in time to idyllic little towns and villages that will allow you a sort of mental re-awakening. But hey, if it’s Havelock + Neil you’re craving, then by all means, go for it! They are sure to give you equally enriching experiences.

Step 2: Pin down on a Budget Range

Your budget range will probably determine the resort or hotel that you choose to stay at. If you’re looking at a luxury or a mid-range group of hotels, it could mean that you’re not looking to cut corners in most places and can comfortably accommodate a range of island activities, restaurant hopping and bar hopping in your budget. So, this one’s mostly for people looking to travel on a tighter budget.

There are some things we recommend you skimp on and some things that you absolutely don’t, if you’re not looking to splurge and go all-out. Here it goes:

  • Regardless of what your budget is, feel free to cut down in Port Blair but go in for the best resort that your budget can offer in Havelock.
  • If you’re looking to add a bit of adventure, allocate a minimum budget of 10k per person for a vacation of 4-5 days. You may not partake every day, but you’ll want to do something every 2 days to break the monotony of the beach and the pool.
  • Allocate a minimum budget of 7k per person for restaurant hopping for a vacation of 4-5 days. You may not want to eat at the resort or hotel of your stay every single day. So, put aside a small budget for exploring different eateries. This is an absolute must.

Step 3: Pin down on the perfect number of days

While the “perfect number” may sound far-fetched, there is a number at which just about any traveller will be happy. That sweet number, lovelies, is 7 days aka. a week. Anything less than that and you’re sure to be feeling like you’re hurrying along. You’re dreading the end of your vacation even before it has started. We’ve done it and it’s the worst! More than a week is, of course, ideal but some may say that we’re being over-optimistic. So, we’ll leave it at 7 days minimum. That’s the sweet spot, if you will.

Step 4: Know the different seasons and the best time of travel for you

Do you want to be here when it’s pouring cats, dogs and whales? Maybe. Maybe you’re the rare breed of traveller that relies only on your hearty spirit to make the best of your holiday. However, that’s not been our experience with most holiday-makers. Weather can be a deal-breaker for most people. Pick your dates smartly and in all probability, you may end up having a sunny time.

So, for the weather-cautious, the break-down of tourist seasons in the Andamans looks more or less like this:

Process of Booking the Holiday

andaman trip how many days

Step 1: Flights First

Booking of flights is a great starting point for travellers to the Andamans. Here are a couple of tips to keep in mind:

  • Book flights 1-2 months in advance: Flights to Port Blair during the High + Peak seasons can be exorbitant, if they’re not booked in advance. So, try and book at-least 1-2 months in advance, if not more. This is especially for folks looking to travel in December and January. Last-minute ticket costs in these two months can go to as high as Rs. 30,000 one-way and getting a ticket can become an annoying, expensive affair.
  • Book flights smartly, it can save you money: If you’re looking to spend time only in Havelock & Neil, book the earliest flight into Port Blair, so you can get the last ferry to the islands that departs from Port Blair at 2 pm. Similarly, from Havelock or Neil, book the earliest ferry into Port Blair, so that you can leave on the last flight back. This will mean that you can give Port Blair a complete miss, if you want to, without spending the night here.

Step 2: Ferries before Hotels

Book your inter-island ferry tickets (from Port Blair to Havelock or Neil islands) before you book your hotels, even if you’re someone that loves to take it as it comes. There are a limited number of ferries on the islands and thereby, there are a limited number of tickets. We’d recommend booking it at-least a month in advance. At worst, you can do 3 weeks in advance. Through the years, we’ve seen some travellers come to the islands without ferry tickets and struggling with it after they’ve arrived. It can make for a bitter experience if you only have a few days in hand and are not pleased to be stuck in Port Blair.

Step 3: Hotel Bookings

Booking hotels and resorts is a vast field to cover, but we’ll give you the most important things to keep in mind while booking them.

  • More Havelock + Neil, Less Port Blair: If we had a rupee for every time we’ve said this, we’d have a piggy bank full of fat coins. But this is essential and cannot be said enough. If you’re here for a tropical beach vacation, then Havelock & Neil islands are where you want to be spending the most time. Although Port Blair district does have its own set of coveted beach locations, we’re still a little partial to the island twins: Havelock & Neil.
  • Location. Location. Location: Decide on whether you want a moderately crowded space or a near-isolated resort on a remote part of the island. Most people on short trips prefer to stay close to the buzz. All the islands are comfortable quiet after dark, so you are not likely to be faced with loud music or drunk vacationers, in any case. But if you’re after a special type of isolation, and are looking to step off the beaten path, you only need ask.
  • Beach-side hotels > Hotels not on the beach: We don’t think this needs an explanation. But we’re still going to do it: white sand, a heady sea breeze and a beach lined with coconut trees. Okay, you get the drift.
  • Pool is cool: Disgustingly rhymed words aside, even if you’re on a beach, luxuriating in a pool is a whole different vibe. And if it’s a pool with a pool-side bar, extra brownie points for that! Because nothing better than sitting on a flamingo, sipping chilled beer and soaking up the sun.

Step 4: Booking your Activities

Booking your activities well in advance may be to your advantage if you have very few days of vacation time and don’t have the luxury of flexibility.

  • Book your Scuba session in advance: If you book a Scuba-Diving session (you should definitely), do it well in advance. This is especially applicable during peak season between December and January when most dive shops get completely booked out.
  • More adventure, less sight-seeing: Indulge in more adventure activities, like water sports & trekking, and less sight-seeing activities. Try to pick 2-3 sights to see, if at all and don’t let FOMO get the better of you.

Do a maximum of 2 Activities/day: Don’t book yourself for more than 2 activities in a day. You probably don’t want to feel like you have a time-table to follow. Don’t try and cram in too much, without giving yourself any breathing space.

Important Travel Resources

Packing list: what to carry and what not to carry.

We’re not going to bore you with every little thing but we’ll give you a list of island-relevant things that shouldn’t be missing in your packing list.

What to Carry:

andaman trip how many days

Necessaries:

What you don’t need: .

A lot of people wonder if their Indian sim cards will work on the Andamans and the answer is: yes, it will! We have three main service providers here: Airtel, Vodafone and BSNL. So, if you’re with any one of them, you don’t have to worry about getting a new sim card when you land or getting an international sim card before you depart. BSNL and Airtel are your best bet. If you’re not with any of them, you could get one before you arrive and it’ll work just fine.

Cash or Card?

Although we do have ATMs everywhere in Port Blair and we have a couple in Havelock & Neil and most places do accept card payments, it’ll still be prudent to carry some amount in cash. You may need it for smaller eateries, roadside vendors, to pay for some activities and such. An all-card approach is definitely not advisable. At all times, keep at-least Rs. 5000 in hand which can be replenished at an ATM when it runs out.

Calling it a (holi)day

We’ve covered lots of little bits to get you going and this blog should serve as a gentle guidance for your Andaman Vacation Plan.

The Complete Andaman and Nicobar Island Guide for First Timers

Paromita Roy

  • Updated on May 14, 2023
  • Andaman Nicobar , Guides & Tips , India

andaman trip how many days

If you want to enjoy the scenic beauty of dazzling beaches and explore the exotic marine life through coral reefs, then you must make your next trip to Andaman and Nicobar Islands . The enticing islands have become one of the most popular beach holiday destinations in India.

Table of Contents

Travel Guide for Andaman and Nicobar Island First-Timers:

When is the best time to visit andaman & nicobar islands.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands can be visited at any time of the year, except during the rainy season. However, the most popular season for tourists is the winter season, which generally falls between November and February. If you are not bothered by the summer heat of India, you can also plan a trip during the months of March and April.

The islands are a popular tourist destination due to their picturesque beaches, scenic views, and serene environment. The archipelago is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, and offers ample opportunities for water sports such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and surfing.

During the winter months, the weather is pleasant and conducive for outdoor activities. The temperature ranges between 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, and the humidity is relatively low. This makes it an ideal time to explore the various beaches and indulge in water sports.

If you prefer to avoid crowds, it is recommended to plan your trip during the shoulder season, which falls between September and October or March and April. During this time, the weather is still pleasant, and the tourist inflow is comparatively lower.

On the other hand, the monsoon season , which falls between May and September, should be avoided as the islands receive heavy rainfall and strong winds during this period. The choppy seas and inclement weather make it difficult to indulge in water sports, and many tourist activities are suspended during this time.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands can be visited throughout the year, but the best time to visit is during the winter season. However, if you prefer a quieter atmosphere and are not bothered by the summer heat, you can plan your trip during the shoulder season. Whatever time you choose to visit, the islands are sure to leave you mesmerized with their natural beauty and tranquil environment.

The airport is well-connected to all major cities in India, making it easy for travelers to plan their journey.

If you are looking for a more adventurous way to reach Andaman and Nicobar Islands, you can take a ship from Visakhapatnam, Chennai, or Kolkata. This option is ideal for those who want to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. However, the journey can take anywhere from 2 to 4 days depending on the departure location and weather conditions. It is recommended to check the schedule and book your tickets in advance to avoid any inconvenience.

The number of days you need for a trip to Andaman depends on the places you want to visit and the activities you want to do. However, in general, a minimum of 5 to 6 days is recommended to explore some of the main attractions of Andaman, including Port Blair, Havelock Island, and Neil Island.

During this time, you can visit popular tourist spots like the Cellular Jail in Port Blair, Radhanagar Beach in Havelock Island, and the Natural Bridge in Neil Island. You can also indulge in water activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, and sea walking.

If you have more time, you can extend your stay to explore other beautiful islands like Baratang Island, Ross Island, and the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park. Additionally, you can spend more time relaxing on the beaches, exploring local markets, and trying out the local cuisine.

In summary, a minimum of 5-6 days is recommended for a trip to Andaman, but you can extend your stay based on your interests and the places you want to explore.

WHICH MONTH IS BEST FOR ANDAMAN TRIP?

andaman trip how many days

The best time to visit Andaman is from November to mid-May, which is the dry season and the peak tourist season. During this time, the weather is pleasant, with clear skies, calm seas, and comfortable temperatures, making it ideal for outdoor activities like swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, and sightseeing.

The months of December to February are particularly popular, as the weather is cooler and less humid, and the sea is at its calmest, making it perfect for water activities like snorkeling and scuba diving. This period is also ideal for exploring the islands and soaking in the natural beauty of Andaman.

It’s worth noting that the peak tourist season can mean higher prices for flights, accommodation, and activities, and the popular attractions can get crowded, so it’s important to book in advance and plan accordingly. Overall, the best time to visit Andaman is during the dry season, from November to mid-May, for the best weather and optimal conditions for outdoor activities and sightseeing.

WHICH MONTH IS CHEAPEST TO VISIT ANDAMAN TRIP?

The cheapest time to visit Andaman is typically during the offseason, which is from May to September. During this period, the number of tourists visiting the islands decreases, and the prices for flights, accommodation, and activities tend to be lower than during the peak tourist season.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that Andaman has a tropical climate, and the offseason coincides with the monsoon season, which can mean heavy rains and strong winds. While it’s still possible to visit during this time, it’s worth considering the potential impact on outdoor activities and sightseeing.

WHAT IS THE BENEFITS BOOK BY LOCAL TRAVEL AGENT?

andaman trip how many days

In addition, it is important to keep in mind that Andaman is a tropical region and is far away from the mainland. This means that the weather can be unpredictable, and transportation can be limited. A travel agent with experience in Andaman can help you navigate these challenges and ensure that your trip goes smoothly. They can also provide guidance on the best time to visit based on weather patterns and can help you select the most reliable and comfortable transportation options. By booking an Andaman tour package with a travel agent, you can have the added assurance that you are in good hands, even in an unfamiliar and remote destination. Here are some advantages to booking your trip through a travel agent:

Local expertise: Travel agents have local knowledge and experience that can be invaluable when planning a trip to Andaman. They can help you navigate the local culture, customs, and traditions, and can suggest the best places to visit and activities to do based on your preferences and interests.

Hassle-free planning: Planning a trip to Andaman can be complex, especially when it comes to transportation, accommodation, and activities. A travel agent can help you plan your itinerary, book your flights, ferries, and taxis, and arrange your accommodation and activities, taking the hassle out of the planning process.

Better deals: Travel agents often have access to exclusive deals and discounts that may not be available to the general public. They can also help you find the best deals on flights, accommodation, and activities, saving you money on your trip.

Support during the trip: In case of any issues during your trip, a travel agent can provide support and assistance, helping you deal with any unforeseen situations. They can also arrange for medical assistance, if needed, ensuring that you have a safe and hassle-free trip.

Peace of mind: By booking your Andaman trip through a travel agent, you can have peace of mind knowing that your trip is well-planned and organized, and that you have access to support and assistance throughout your journey.

In summary, booking your Andaman trip through a travel agent can offer a range of benefits, especially given the unique challenges posed by the region being a tropical island and far from the mainland. A travel agent can provide local expertise, hassle-free planning, better deals, support during the trip, and peace of mind, ensuring that you have a safe and enjoyable trip to Andaman.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO PLAN A TRIP TO THE ANDAMAN ISLANDS ON MY OWN?

andaman trip how many days

If you’re planning to visit Andaman, it’s possible to book your tour on your own, but we recommend considering the advantages of booking through a local tour operator.

It’s important to keep in mind that Andaman is a tropical region and is far away from the mainland of India. This can make it challenging for travelers to navigate the region on their own, especially if they are not familiar with the local language or culture. By booking an Andaman tour package with a travel agent, you can take advantage of their local knowledge and expertise to make the most of your trip.

Travel agents with experience in Andaman can help you choose the right activities and attractions based on the time of year and weather conditions. They can also offer recommendations for the best accommodations, restaurants, and shopping spots. They can handle all of the details, including transportation and activity bookings, to ensure that your trip runs smoothly.

Additionally, booking an Andaman tour package with a travel agent can provide you with peace of mind. If any unexpected situations arise, such as flight cancellations or lost luggage, your travel agent can offer assistance and guidance to help you navigate the situation. This can be particularly valuable when traveling to a remote and unfamiliar region like Andaman.

In summary, booking an Andaman tour package with a travel agent can provide you with local knowledge, customized itineraries, hassle-free arrangements, better deals, assistance during emergencies, peace of mind, and all while keeping in mind the unique challenges of traveling in a tropical region that is far from the mainland of India.

Andaman Trip Itinerary for first timers

andaman trip how many days

Andaman Trip Itinerary

If you are visiting Andaman for the first time, there is a lot of info available on the internet on where to go and what to do. You have seen the picture perfect clear blue waters and white sand beaches. If you could, you would fly there right now. So what’s a great way to plan an Andaman itinerary for first timers?

Here are a few simple steps

andaman trip how many days

1. How would you like to plan your trip?

a) Group package tour: Some people love to travel in the comfort of a guided group tour. You have someone to take care of every aspect of the group, a nice group of individuals to travel with and a planned fun experience. You can approach a tour agency in your city to do this

b) A regular package tour: This can be a package customized for your family, friends and colleagues. You can approach a local tour operator for this. Ideally that is who everyone approaches as they have the best local knowledge and are well aware of every trip nuance.

c) Self-planned trip: With all information now available online, it is easy to book your own trip the way you want. You can get quotes from multiple tour operators from aggregator websites and choose the package you want for the best price.

If you choose a, you’ll probably already have your entire itinerary planned for you. If you choose b or c, you have lots of room for customization. Here’s what to do next

2. Book your flight tickets

Flight tickets are quite a cost component in an Andaman trip. Booking one as soon as possible, especially if there is a sale / discount can let you save a lot of money. Here’s all the info you need on Flights to Andaman

3. Plan you number of days of stay

If you are a first timer, we recommend you spend at least 5 days on the island. Give another 2 days for travel and that makes it a week of vacation. This is good for a regular and a honeymoon package.

4. Plan you budget

Google cheap Andaman packages and you’ll find one for as low as Rs. 5000 per person and others for more than a lakh and a half. It depends on the level of service, type of stay and choice of activities. We generally recommend that “cheap” not be a guiding factor as you many end up with a less-than-good experience.

4. Now comes the best part – your actual Andaman itinerary

Andaman has a lot of beaches with popular ones featuring in most itineraries and the quite ones tucked away from sight. Ideally, everyone wants the best of both. Similarly, you want to see the popular sites but also want some alone time, relaxing and enjoying. You want a bit of adventure with a scuba or snorkel but also want to explore the natural magnificence of the limestone caves and a slice of history at the cellular jail. And of course, no vacation can be complete without some souvenir shopping. Here’s how to plan it all in your Andaman itinerary

1. A day at Port Blair

andaman trip how many days

The main attraction in the city is the Cellular jail and its sound and light show. You can plan your trip in such a way that you can visit the jail during the day, spend some time out shopping and around the Corbyn’s Cove (It is a regular beach) and then catch the sound and light show in the evening

2. Spend a day around Neil Island

andaman trip how many days

Neil has some wonderful beaches like Sitapur, Bharatpur and Laxmanpur. It has the famous Howrah bridge and can offer a day of relaxation and an amazing sunset. Stay at the Neil island and soak in a wonderful Andaman experience

3. A day at Havelock

andaman trip how many days

Havelock has beach No. 7 or Radhanagar beach which is voted the best beach in Asia and 8 th best in the world. Considering its popularity, you may find it a tad crowded but nonetheless, it is a must visit.

During day 2 or 3, you can choose to snorkel and/or a glass bottom boat ride.

4. Scuba diving day

andaman trip how many days

A Try Dive is great for anyone who wants a slice of adventure (even if you don’t know how to swim). Done in half a day with a short theory followed by an actual dive with an instructor, it will be everything you dreamed of. Return to Port Blair for the night

5. Limestone caves / Mud volcano day trip

andaman trip how many days

The trip requires that you leave your hotel around 3AM, navigate through the dense Andaman forests and canoe through the mangroves to catch 2 amazing natural wonders. You’ll return the same day by 5PM to spend the night at Port Blair

While this is a great standard itinerary that covers a bit of everything, you can stay an extra day to either explore some of the other beaches for a day of relaxation or do another day of scuba diving.

Additional notes

Honeymoon packages can get a few add-ons like candle light dinner, bed decoration on one occasion and an additional session of snorkelling on the house.

So, we have put together a step by step guide on the things you should consider while you make plans for your next vacation to Andaman islands . We have tried to list out things in a certain order which will take you through the brainstorming phase of your trip planning with ease .

So take a deep breath and let’s get started !

Step 1 : Decide your travel partner solo/family/friends

A vacation is all about memories and experiences and you have to decide what kind of memories you want to create on every particular trip, for this you have to ask yourself:

Who are you travelling to andaman with?

This question is a very important one if not the most . Are you planning to travel solo? With your partner? With your family?

andaman trip how many days

If you are travelling solo you would probably want to avoid staying at a resort popular with couples and might not want to visit a zoo etc. you might prefer to go for treks , adventure activities and meet new like minded people .

A solo trip is not for everyone ,it can be a life-changing experience for many people while it is a disaster for some.

Travelling solo is a process of self-discovery and ambition. Also, the highest degree of self-indulgence

As wonderful as this adventure sounds, it comes with a cautionary tale.

There are certain things you need to be very sure of when travelling solo or with family.

Roadmap of the entire Andaman trip

Let’s say, on your arrival, will you be getting a cab to the hotel? Will the Hotel offer all the amenities such as wifi, food, credit card machines?

What would be the distance between the main city and the hotel? The distance between the places you plan to visit and the hotel?

What is the number of days you intend to spend in Andaman Islands and will it work within your budget framework?

Travelling as a couple

A honeymoon couple travelling to Andaman wants a different experience from a solo traveller or a family group.

A couple generally looks out for places which offer you relaxation and luxury. The main focus here is to spend some quality time with the partner. A week or two is the preferred duration.

Take a look at the itinerary of Tropical Andamans. We have a brilliant one-week strategy. This involves visiting beaches, scuba diving, swimming, site seeing. Always book in advance, it will fetch you at least 5 -10% discount.

Travelling with family

Travelling with family is a beautiful experience. It leaves a lasting impression of childhood memories. And fosters a deep bond with your loved ones.

Travelling with elderly or kids calls for the extra vigilance and planning.

Make sure that the activities you pick do not include many miles of walk or dangerous sports. Stick to the basics such as cultural heritage sites, museums, and beaches.

Make sure to pack the required medicines and the extra food.

Keep the kids informed. Accustom them with the itinerary, places, heritage and stories. In a scenario that they may get lost or misguided, it would be easy to find the way back.

In case you need help with a wheelchair, we would suggest hiring a private car for the trip

Step 2: How many days to you want to stay in Andaman

This step is the most crucial in setting the tone for the rest of your trip. It questions your budget and area of interest.

Once the traveller decides on who to travel with. The next is to contemplate on the number of days.

Considering the duration your Andaman vacation is vital. It may depend on a lot of factors. Say how far is your travel to Port Blair?. Will you get your leave approved? Would you want to leave a day or two to get back home and relax?

andaman trip how many days

Based on this you might want to avail one or the other package option Tropical Andaman provides:

We have a 3 days quick trip

Day 1 – Airport pick up followed by local city and heritage sites on the day. Cellular jail and light and show program by the night

Day 2 – Havelock island and Radha Nagar beach

Day 3 – Elephant beach (snorkelling trip. and a boat ride). Evening head back to Port Blair

Day 4- Drop you off to the airport

Do keep in mind that these are the basics of this beautiful island. And with plenty of time in your hands, we would suggest a four or five-day trip

Day 4 – Ross island and north bay island

Day 5 – Neil island

Usually a minimum of 5 days is required for an Andaman tour which covers all major attractions.

You are welcome to extend your stay with an immersive experience for ten days.

You can spend more days in every location and relax on the sandy beaches.

Do check our itinerary section for more information

Step 3 – Budget of your trip

Keeping your budget in mind is also very crucial. The easy way would be to decide on a rough budget.

  • Split your budget into the core activities and others.
  • Make sure you divide enough money for all the core necessities. E.g. Transport (airline ticket, taxis, buses), sightseeing, hotel reservation.
  • Try and book a Andaman tour package which includes at least two meals a day. In that case, you wouldn’t have to worry about finding a place to eat, when you get up or go to bed. You can always have that one meal a day outside and enjoy the local cuisine.

andaman trip how many days

Then allocate the rest of the money for other activities.

E.g. scuba diving, shopping, dinner, dates etc.

Keep aside some funds for contingency.

Prioritize what you want the most, it’s difficult to have it all.

Depending on the couple or the family, you might want to book in advance. This will avail good discount options. Also, pre-booking everything would avoid last-minute confusion.

A solo person can go easy and take one step at a time.

If you have answers to these questions then the next step is to get all your documents ready.

Step 4: Decide on your travel style

Travel style differs from one person to another. It is important to ponder on who you are and what you would like out of the trip.

For an adventure junkie, there is sea diving, bungee jumping, jet skiing and kayaking only to name a few.

But in case you prefer privacy, then lie down by the coconut tree and soak up the sun. Islands here give you that perfect private atmosphere.

andaman trip how many days

In the evenings, head to the resort bar for socials and grab a drink and enjoy the sound of the crashing waves.

For all the romantics, it’s also an idyllic place for a proposal. The breezy sunset, crashing waves and the candlelit dinner will escalate your senses.

Go ahead and hire a photographer and capture the memories with your beloved.

For the family group, we always recommend our package with the most amount of sightseeing. From the cellular jail to the glories of Ross island. The children, young and old will enjoy it.

We would recommend hiring a private vehicle for a couple. And group vehicles for the ones with family. It is more convenient and inclusive.

The solo travellers best suit travelling with a tour guide or with a group.

Step 5: Consider the weather

The season plays a very vital role. It will make or break your vacation. You don’t want to be stuck at a beach with heavy rainfall.

The best season for activities in Andaman is without question, the summer and spring.

andaman trip how many days

This season is ideal for scuba and snorkelling. The simmering sun on light blue waters will steal your heart.

But, if you are low on budget you may consider the off-seasons as well. The discounts offered on the Andaman Tours makes it worth the while.

Step6: Book flight tickets

Once you have done the above, it’s time to Book your flights to Andaman.

Yet, consider the following:

Is there a direct  flight  from your location to Port Blair. Will you travel to havelock by bus or a hired car? How many islands do you wish to visit and the mode of transport you are most comfortable with?

andaman trip how many days

Would you like to travel with other groups?

Our company’s itinerary will help you with understanding your potential options.

Reconfirm all your bookings, make sure you have the number of all the cab drivers and guides.

Step7: Book your stay in Andaman

It is best to book your hotel at the earliest.

We would suggest comparing different hotels and the room sizes for your needs.

If you are tight on your budget, look for the cheap hotels or resorts

andaman trip how many days

Before your booking, you can request your agent for a clear picture of the location.

Homestays are also an option for the ones looking for cheap accommodation.

In case you are travelling with family or are going solo, we recommend making the city as the base location.

Make sure that you Keep in touch with your  travel agent  and get all the needed updates.

Reconfirm your hotel booking a week before you plan to start.

Step8: Book all entry ticket for sightseeing

This step may seem trivial, but we assure you it’s best done at the earliest. Booking your entry and sightseeing ticket in advance. This will help you with reducing your waiting time and any on spot confusion.

andaman trip how many days

Keep your agent informed about all the places you wish to see. Book everything beforehand to stay calm and comfortable.

The Port Blair city has a lot to offer.  Cellular jail  with its historic past is mesmerizing. They have a brilliant light and sound show in the evenings.

The anthropological museum is a complete delight. They offer narratives of the native tribal. The Jarawas, the Onges, the Sentinelese, the Shompens, are the few to mention.

There are also stores with souvenirs, pearls and other authentic island items.

The ross island is happily situated in the middle of the sea. About an hour away from the city, it’s a complete nature&rsquos delight. There are also places like marina park and jolly boy national park. All these places would need passes for entry or activity.

Step9: Book all cruise and ferry tickets

By now it may seem tedious, but we advise you to be proactive and book your cruise and ferry tickets.

If you plan to travel to  havelock , then consider the boat timings, hotel check-in timing and your travel routine.

andaman trip how many days

You could opt for different ferries depending on your budget. Mac cruise, green ocean and govt ferry are a few options.

Consider the timing and the cost of the ferry to all the locations you plan to travel. There are options to travel in the morning and noon.

Step 10:Transport and Connect

Once again consider your transport. We suggest solo travellers opt for group transport for safety and security reasons.

For honeymoon couples, we generally recommend private vehicles for privacy.

andaman trip how many days

Depending on how many people you are travelling with, you can book one or more private cars.

Always keep in touch with your agent and inform him at the earliest about your transport needs.

Also, request for a driver who either knows Hindi or English.

Reconfirm that your package has a pick-up and drop service.

We also recommend keeping our drivers name and number saved in your mobile.

Leave an itinerary for your hotel manager as well as a close friend or a family member

Keep a portable charger with yourself. Ensure that your phone has a full battery and connectivity.

Well, if you are not travelling solo and with a family, you should adhere to the above guidelines anyway.

Step 11: How to make the payments

If you get confused about how and when to pay.

We recommend paying an advance of about 20 to 30 per cent to the agent before the trip. Cruises and sightseeing places can get booked only for the full amount. But before you do that read up and understand all the cancellation policies.

andaman trip how many days

We suggest upfront payment for at least 2 meals. This will avoid the confusion and chaos of finding an eatery place in an unknown location.

You can pay via credit or debit card. Consider an EMI option as well.

Step 12 : Safety and security

Andaman is generally a very safe place for tourist. But it is better to take all the basic precaution. Here are few things you should keep in mind:

andaman trip how many days

Store the documents such as passport, identification card, ATM cards in a very protective belt.

You can invest in a money belt for travellers if you don’t have one.

Also leave all the non-essential valuables such as gold rings, chains, iPad at home.

Make a copy of your air travel, hotel booking and important contacts

When you are solo and a woman

The beat of a solo traveller is quite different.

They aim to discover the hidden secrets of the places, Learn the ways of locals around. Immerse oneself in the culture and heritage of the place. This may take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months.

The plan for solo travellers is quite the catch as well. It includes trekking, visiting the homes of the natives(Jharawas and ongis ). Visiting beaches, surfing, paragliding, scuba diving and luxury spa.

Now if you are a woman travelling solo, the challenges are the same with extra concern for safety. The best is to keep in touch with the locals and to keep your family or friends updated about your whereabouts.

Use social media platforms to keep your loved ones updated. Whatsapp, Instagram and Facebook are an indispensable tool.

And most paramount, we recommend group transport for moving from one place to another. This is a more safe and sustainable option for solo travellers.

Step 13: packing and getting ready for the trip

We recommend you keep a folder with a scanned copy of all the important documents. Passport is the quintessential one.

Make a list of all the documents and keep the originals separate from the scanned copy.

Carry scanned copy everywhere. Keep the originals safe in your luggage or at the hotel safe.

Keep a copy of the itinerary with you at all times

andaman trip how many days

Reconfirm all your booking and airport pickups.

Be sure to save all the required phone numbers. It should include

Passing Ports

Port Blair, Havelock and Neil Island

This is how I spent five days in Andaman Islands, and so can you!

If you are looking for a place to relax and enjoy nature to the fullest – you will be happy that you have zeroed in on Andaman Islands. Andaman and Nicobar Islands are one of the seven Union Territories of India. Comfortably seated on the Bay of Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar consists of more than 500 islands. Tribals inhabit most of these islands and some of the known tribes are Onge, Jarawa, Sentinelese, Great Andamanese, Nicobarese and Shompen tribes. As travellers, we have few islands that allow entry while the rest belong to tribal communities which is mostly restricted.

This small island is a photographer’s delight. Be it trekking to mountain peaks, visiting the caves, snorkeling or walking on the sea bed, Andaman Islands is a treat for all. Clear beaches, amazing sunrise and sunset views, colorful marine life and numerous corals studded beaches, this should be a destination that one should not miss. So how many days do you think you need in Andaman Islands? Read below!

How many days to spend in Andaman?

It absolutely depends on what you want to do. If you want to learn scuba diving, then it’s more than a week, however, if you just want to take a break from your hectic life and have fun – between three to five days is ideal. Oh, age no bar as there is something in store for everyone. Underwater walking, snorkeling are some of the must do’s t enjoy the marine life of Andaman Sea.

Suggested Itinerary for the Andaman Islands

The capital of Andaman, you definitely need a minimum of 2 days to explore this place.

Must Do’s at Port Blair : Cellular Jail (pic above) along with the sound and light show, a visit to the nearby islands such as Ross, Viper and North Bay Island, Baratang Caves, Jolly Buoy Island, Chidiya Tapu and Munda Pahad Beach, Corbyn’s Cove and Wandoor beach.

Here is a detailed post on the things to do when in Port Blair .

Havelock Island

I’ll definitely suggest a minimum of two full days in Havelock. If you are someone who wants to take rest and immerse yourself in beauty, then more than two it is! Catch the one and half hour long ferry to reach this island from Port Blair. You can also quickly pay a visit to the Elephant Island from Havelock for water activities.

Must Do At Havelock: Swim in one of the best beaches of Asia – Radhanagar beach and don’t forget the beautiful sunset!

You will get more information here on where I stayed and what you can do to enjoy this island to the fullest.

Neil Island

A very small island yet beautiful. Neil Island is between Havelock and Port Blair and you can stay here for minimum two days. If you decide to visit both these islands, Neil Island will ideally be the last stop before heading back to Port Blair. This island is lush with paddy fields on both sides, this is a paradise for those seeking absolute silence.

Must Do’s at Neil Island: Visit the Bharatpur , Sitapur and Laxmanpur beach. Do not miss the naturally formed bridge when in Laxmanpur beach. This post on Neil Island will offer more info on the place I stayed .

Have you been to other islands and explored more? Please do let us know in the comments section 🙂

Thank you Swarup. When are you planning this trip?

Hi. I will be staying in Club Mahindra resort. Whats it like in Andaman. Are you struck in the resort and eating standard food. Or you can go out and eat local street food. Oh yes food becomes a major part if my travel

Hi Atul.. in PB there are places where you can venture out to eat while I doubt the same in Neil and Havelock. My deal was all food inclusive so I neded up eating at the resort and I am a vegetarian 🙂 That being said, there are small places that do serve snacking food.

How many days are required for Andaman trip?

How many days are required for an Andaman trip?

Andaman and Nicobar Islands, located in the Bay of Bengal, is a breath-taking tropical paradise that attracts thousands of tourists every year. With its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush green forests, it is no wonder that Andaman has become a popular destination for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. If you are planning a trip to this beautiful archipelago, one of the first questions that might come to your mind is how many days are required to explore Andaman fully. In this blog post, we will discuss the ideal duration for an Andaman trip and provide you with a suggested itinerary to make the most of your time in this stunning destination.

1. Short Trip: 3-4 Days

If you have limited time and just want to get a taste of Andaman, a short trip of 3-4 days is possible. In this duration, you can visit the capital city of Port Blair and explore some of its famous attractions like Cellular Jail, Samudrika Naval Marine Museum, and Corbyn's Cove Beach. You can also take a day trip to North Bay Island, which is known for its coral reefs and snorkeling opportunities. However, keep in mind that with such a short duration, you won't be able to explore the other beautiful islands and beaches that Andaman has to offer.

2. Standard Trip: 5-7 Days

A standard trip duration of 5-7 days is ideal if you want to experience the best of Andaman. In addition to visiting Port Blair, you will have enough time to explore some of the other popular islands like Havelock Island, Neil Island, and Ross Island. Havelock Island is famous for its Radhanagar Beach, which has been ranked as one of the best beaches in Asia. Neil Island, on the other hand, is known for its serene beaches and natural beauty. This duration also allows you to indulge in water sports activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, and jet skiing.

3. Extended Trip: 8-10 Days

For those who want to truly immerse themselves in the beauty of Andaman and have a relaxed vacation, an extended trip of 8-10 days is recommended. With this duration, you can explore not only the popular islands but also the lesser-known ones like Baratang Island and Long Island. Baratang Island is famous for its limestone caves and mangrove forests, while Long Island offers secluded beaches and stunning sunsets. You can also take a day trip to the famous Elephant Beach in Havelock Island and go on a snorkeling adventure to spot vibrant corals and marine life.

4. Island-Hopping Trip: 10+ Days

If you are a true island lover and want to explore as many islands as possible, then a trip of 10 days or more is recommended. This duration will allow you to indulge in island hopping and visit exotic islands like Little Andaman, Diglipur, and Rangat. Little Andaman is known for its beautiful waterfalls and surfing opportunities, while Diglipur offers a chance to explore the famous Ross and Smith Islands. Rangat, on the other hand, is home to pristine beaches and mangrove creeks. This kind of trip requires more time and planning but guarantees a unique and unforgettable experience.

The ideal duration for an Andaman trip depends on your preferences and the amount of time you have. While a short trip of 3-4 days allows you to experience the highlights of Andaman, a longer trip of 8-10 days or more gives you the opportunity to explore the hidden gems and lesser-known islands. Whether you are a beach lover, adventure enthusiast, or nature admirer, Andaman has something to offer to everyone. So plan your trip accordingly, pack your bags, and get ready to create memories that will last a lifetime!

Don't forget to share this blog post with your friends and family who are planning a trip to Andaman!

Your guide to the solar eclipse 2024 - when is it happening?

A rare total solar eclipse will occur across a strip of the United States on Monday, with millions hoping to catch a glimpse of the celestial phenomenon that is the continent’s first since 2017.

Here’s what you need to know:

What is a total solar eclipse?

On Monday April 8 2024 Mexico, the US and Canada will experience a total solar eclipse when the Moon will line up perfectly between the Earth and the Sun and block out the Sun for a total of 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

What time is it set to begin?

Nasa says it will enter the US at 2.27pm ET (6:27pm GMT) and leave around an hour later.

Why is everyone excited?

Often such events happen in remote parts of the world but this year it will pass over many heavily populated places. Once it hits the US from Mexico, it will pass through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

Tiny parts of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear. When the eclipse enters Canada it will pass over southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

How many people will be able to see it?

Estimates suggest 44 million people live within the path of totality, with another couple hundred million within 200 miles.

What are people doing to prepare to see it?

The eclipse has become a major tourist attraction, with large numbers of people flying to locations in the area of total eclipse. CBS News said as many as 4 million people were expected to fly to cities such as Dallas, adding up to $1bn into local economies as hotels and campsites get sold out.

Is there really a mass wedding?

Just a few moments before the eclipse, almost 300 couples from 22 states are set to wed in Russellville, Arkansas, which is in the area of totality. Among them are Carlotta Cox and Matthew Holloway of Knoxville, Tennessee.

“Being in the path of totality during a solar eclipse is just something,” Mr Cox told a local reporter. “There’s not an experience like it and for people that have not really experienced it, I recommend that they put it on their bucket list.”

What are others doing?

There are watch parties hosted by everything from Brooklyn Botanic Garden (which should get around 90 per cent totality) to the Main Street Garden in Dallas, which should get 100 per cent totality.

The New York Adventure Club is selling a three-day train journey in 1950s First Class Pullman cars for $8,000 from New York City to Niagara Falls from April 7-9 “to witness an awe-inspiring total eclipse pass over New York State for the first time in over 60 years”. Inmates at New York state’s Woodbourne Correctional Facility will get to view the eclipse after lawyers sued the state’s Department of Corrections and Community Supervision over not being allowed to see it.

What will happen during the eclipse?

“During a total eclipse, the sky darkens suddenly and dramatically. The temperature drops. Stars come out. Beautiful colours appear around the horizon,” said National Public Radio science journalist Nell Greenfieldboyce.

“And the once-familiar Sun becomes a black void in the sky surrounded by the glowing corona - that’s the ghostly white ring that is the Sun’s atmosphere.”

While it is not expected pets and farm and zoo animals will act too strangely, there are some potential exceptions; the New York Times says “cows may mosey into their barns for bedtime, flamingoes may huddle together in fear [and] the giant, slow-motion Galápagos tortoise may even get frisky and mate”. In truth, nobody is completely sure and experts will be watching what happens.

Is it safe to look at the Sun?

Experts say it is not safe to look at the Sun during a partial eclipse with the naked eye and people should use eclipse glasses that are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses. During the few minutes of totality, when the Moon is fully blocking the Sun, it is safe to look.

Is there also a comet to see?

During totality viewers may be able to see Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks a comet, along with Venus Saturn and Mars. It may be hard to see with the naked eye.

When was the last total solar eclipse?

The last was August 21, 2017, August 21, 2017, but it only lasted about half the time of this one. The next total eclipse is to take place in Wed, Aug 12, 2026, but expected to hit just parts of Greenland, Iceland and Spain.

2044 solar eclipse path: See where in US totality hits in next eclipse

Compared to this year's eclipse, with a path of totality that will cross over 13 states, the 2044 total solar eclipse won't have as quite as broad of a reach. here's what to know:.

andaman trip how many days

Millions of Americans are by now eagerly awaiting the next total solar eclipse , which is only hours away from passing over a large swath of the continent .

But when the celestial event comes and goes, the awe-inspiring impression it leaves on skygazers may leave them with one question: "When can we see that again?"

Unfortunately, we'll have to wait awhile – this sort of spectacular astral phenomenon doesn't happen very often . Here's what we know about the next total solar eclipse that will cross over the contiguous U.S.

Solar eclipse glasses: What to know about glasses, safe viewing before the solar eclipse

When will the next total solar eclipse happen in the U.S?

Only seven years have passed since Americans had the opportunity to view a total solar eclipse, a relatively rare celestial event in which the moon appears to us here on Earth to completely block the sun.

The resulting fleeting moments of darkness can last for minutes or just mere seconds and is known as " totality ," whereby the sun's outermost layer known as the corona makes a rare appearance.

Today's total solar eclipse , the first in North America since 2017, will travel over portions of northern Mexico, thousands of miles of the U.S. and the maritime provinces of Canada, according to NASA . According to astronomers, this eclipse will be brighter, will last longer and will be visible to more people than the last one in North America.

It's also the last one for 20 years in the United States.

After Monday, the next total solar eclipse viewable from the lower 48 states will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

2044 total solar eclipse path of totality

Compared to this year's eclipse, with a path of totality that will cross over 13 states, the 2044 total solar eclipse won't have as quite as broad of a reach .

The Planetary Society, a nonprofit involved in research, public outreach and political space advocacy, says that during the 2044 eclipse, the path of totality will only touch three states.

The eclipse will begin in Greenland, sweep through Canada and end around sunset in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

It's not too early to start thinking about where you want to witness it. According to whenisthenexteclipse.com , Americans may want to make sure their passports up to date.

The place to be will likely be Banff National Park in Alberta and Jasper National Park , with Calgary and Edmonton also within the path of totality.

What to know about the 2033 eclipse in Alaska

Outside of the "lower 48," Alaska is set to experience a total solar eclipse much sooner.

On March 30, 2033, a total solar eclipse will occur in Russia and cross over Alaska, according to nationaleclipse.com . The maximum duration of totality for this eclipse will be 2 minutes and 37 seconds.
