Much of the business world appears to be embracing more remote work. As just one example, a study conducted by AT&T predicted that the number of jobs moving to the hybrid work model would increase from 42 percent in 2021 to more than 80 percent in 2024. Increased remote work means opening up the possibility of people being able to work from pretty much anywhere, but that is not necessarily tied to their jobs. Think of it more as an added perk, creating multiple full-time travel jobs.

However, jobs that require travel and pay well appear to be going in a positive direction as well. For example, the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected that the number of pilots and flight engineers will increase by 6 percent over the coming decade. 1. Flight Attendant

Flight attendants aren’t just there to hand out snacks and drinks. Part of their jobs involves checking safety equipment to ensure everything looks good. Flight attendants must also have conflict resolution skills to deal with unruly passengers or people who just want to stir up trouble. They also have training to handle some medical emergencies should they happen in the middle of a flight. As a flight attendant, you get to travel the world, spending up to 100 hours in the air every month. Shifts can be exhausting (up to 14 hours), but if there’s enough time between flights, you can check out local landmarks and other fascinating sights in a foreign country. Some airlines also allow their flight attendants to travel for free when they’re not on the job.

With hospitals desperately needing more nurses, a travel nurse can fill that gap from eight weeks to two years. Travel nurses can go pretty much anywhere that needs their expertise. If you have medical experience and don’t want to be tied down to one place for too long, becoming a travel nurse will help you see the world while providing help to people of all types of backgrounds.

7. Photographer

According to the American Trucking Association, the industry is in need of 80,000 drivers , meaning pay and benefits are much more competitive than they were years ago. Jobs that require travel also often require remote work skills. Learning how to work remotely can be a challenge, but here are some helpful tips you can use to excel at your job outside an office setting.

27 Seriously Cool Jobs That Require Travel & How You Can Find Them

A long time ago I learned one thing about myself. I learned that I can’t live in one place for too long and I need to travel often. But before I realized that, subconsciously I was always looking for various projects and jobs that require travel, pay well, and provide great opportunities to move abroad.

And this is what my life for many years was about.

I would find a job that let me move to another state, allow me to travel and learn something new in between. After a while (like in a year or so) I needed a new challenge and more travel. So I would find another job in another part of the country that also provided an opportunity to travel.

With such a lifestyle, I got to live in five different states (originally I am from Ukraine ,) then in five more countries and then I started an online business that helped me start making money online and travel whenever and wherever I want. 

Throughout all these years I also learned another thing – there are actually a lot of people in this world who are like me. They are also eager to find a job that will either require travel or leave enough time for personal travel and adventures. 

In fact, that time when moving from one place to another was a challenging thing to do has passed. Today we are living in the world when it’s easy to travel and easy to move somewhere new. Alright, it’s not that easy now with all the madness but things will improve for sure, just give it some time.   

If you have a goal to move to a new region, country, city, or state, you need to remember that it’s very possible. You just need to arrange a few things and have a plan. And the most exciting part about a  move to another country  is the ability to travel extensively and see the world at your own pace.

So, in this very long and very detailed post, I would love to share a list of amazing traveling jobs.

Some of them are either jobs that I worked or considered to work myself. Others are careers that involve traveling that are pretty common these days. A lot of these jobs pay well and don’t need any experience. Other jobs require degree and experience but pay even better. More on that below.

NOTE : Since our world recently went crazy, a job market started to experience the toughest times. Obviously, we all know that and we are all in the same boat. Yet, you have to remember that things will get better.

Now, is the best time for you to stay positive and invest time in yourself. I am also giving lots of tips on what you can do today to be able to get one of these jobs in the nearest future and in the midst of the crisis.

Jobs That Require Travel With No Experience

1. hotel professional.

***Yes, these days hospitality business is on hold. But guys, it is going to come back. If you are thinking to enter this field, now is the best time to learn how you can do that. 

There is a reason why I would like to start my list with hotel professional jobs. The hospitality business has a lot to offer and this is one of a few fields only that you can enter without experience and in many cases degree. Everything that you need is your charisma, ability to work with people, and desire to deliver an outstanding service.

But before I go into details, let me tell you two things:

First of all , a lot of jobs in the hospitality field do not require direct travel (some do and we’ll talk about them later). But! From my personal experience and from the experience of my colleagues, with a hotel professional job you have hundreds of opportunities to move around and explore the world at your own pace. Below I’ll explain how.

Second , the hospitality business is truly an amazing field for anyone who doesn’t have working experience or wants to travel without a degree.

Mark and I have spent years working in the hospitality industry while making a pretty good salary, enjoying benefits that come with it and moving around the United States. If we ever want to go back into this business, our experiences that come from top hotels in the U.S. will help us land a job in many hotels not only in America but outside the country.

After starting our full-time travel  we have been already offered hotel jobs in Vietnam , had set interviews in Kuala Lumpur , capital of Qatar Doha and Europe. We believe it is a wonderful opportunity to see the world while having a meaningful career.

Getting a Hospitality Job – What You Need to Know

There is a wide range of jobs within the hospitality industry . Since hotels are open 7 days a week, 365 days a year, you can choose for yourself which shift to work. Choose your own schedule and enjoy diversity.

So many people from different cultures and backgrounds work in hotels. Most of the chains offer amazing opportunities. While most of the jobs require you to stay in one place you can easily move to another country or region within the same brand. And when I say this type of job let’s you travel, I mean you can transfer to a new hotel in a new location every 6-12 months.

Also, this is probably one of a few fields where you can move up a career ladder very quickly . You can start with an entry-level job and become a manager within a year. Or, you can apply for the same position but in a new city or country. The hotel management team who is interested to bring you onboard will always facilitate the visa process. It is one of the best ways to get a work permit abroad .

Courses & Classes to Take to Enter the World of Hospitality:

Yet, at the same time, I would love to recommend you look into a few tailored online hospitality courses (mentioned below) that introduce you to the industry and teach you all the main aspects.

Taking any of the courses does not mean that you will automatically get a job. However, educating yourself is important, plus you’ll get your name out there and understand if this field is for you at all.  

Right now, while the economy around the world is going through tough times, the hospitality business is one of those industries that was hit really hard. Hotels are closed and no one is traveling. However, the time of uncertainty will pass and people will start traveling even more than they used to in the past.

So you have a great opportunity now to use all that time and learn as much as you can. If you would like to become a hotel professional in the nearest future, start investing in yourself today. Start devoting a few hours per week to something that can help you change career in the future.

And what is really great with the hospitality business, for entry-level jobs, you don’t necessarily need to have a degree. All you need is your personality, understanding how this industry works, zest to learn, and professionalism. 

That being said, I highly recommend you looking into a few courses and find free information from hotel professionals who are already in this business.  

I personally have taken dozens of courses. Some of them, at first sight, were offering high-quality online education but in reality, had a lot of information that I could find online for free.

So, among all those courses I took, I would highlight only a few:  

UDEMY COURSES:

I took a lot of Udemy online classes which for the most part were very helpful. At present time, Mark is still going through two of their courses on web development (I am mentioning them below.) 

So, if you are new to the hospitality business or even if you have been doing this for a while, you have a wonderful opportunity to learn and grow. And here what I personally can highly speak of:

• Customer Service 2.0 – for those interested to work in Front of the Office department 
• How to Become a Professional Waiter – if you are looking to work in a restaurant (at the hotel or anywhere else.)
• Improve Your English For Tourism And Hospitality – for non-native speakers who are looking to work in the hospitality business in English speaking country 
• Hotel Management Fundamentals – a great short course on a career as a hotel manager
• Social Media Marketing – a social media course that will come in handy in many fields, not just hospitality. But if you are interested to work in the marketing department. 
• How to Open Your Own Hotel, B&B, or Inn – very helpful course for anyone who is thinking to open his own Airbnb/bed & breakfast/Inn, etc.

OTHER COURSES:

• HOW TO BUILD A HOSPITALITY BUSINESS – this course prepares for a professional management career in the hotel industry. 2. Traveling Housekeeper

Some people may assume that this job is very similar to a hotel professional job that I mentioned above. Yes and no.

Traveling housekeeper is basically a person who chooses to look for housekeeping jobs anywhere in the world and go when the opportunity arises.  But to tell you the truth, there are plenty of opportunities. Finding a job won’t take much of the time. Although keep in mind, this is not fully one of the jobs that involve traveling. It is that job where you can travel as you wish. 

In nowadays world, when more and more people choose to travel and more new B&Bs and guest houses are popping out, there is a huge demand for people who do housekeeping. Besides that, let’s be honest, the majority don’t want to do this type of job. Finding it will not be difficult to do.

Anyone can become a traveling housekeeper. This is a wonderful job for those who want to travel and work but don’t hold any degree or experience. More than that, if you are thinking about how to get a job abroad without experience, you can always start with a housekeeper job. Also, if you’ve had a career in something else but want to take a break and move around, take a look at this type of job for travelers.

I have never really thought that it allows you to travel the world until I started to meet others who are doing it.

Last year, for instance, in Kotor, Montenegro , I met a guy from the UK who was spending three months there working as a housekeeper in a guest house. Two months ago, when visiting Cyprus , I met a girl from Russia who was spending three months on the island also working as a housekeeper in one of the hotels.

And then just two weeks ago in Braşov, Romania , I met an American lady who was spending two months in the city working at the hostel. She has been traveling as a housekeeper for a few years now while living in different countries around Europe.

Getting a Traveling Housekeeper job

There are many various websites where you can look for this type of jobs in other countries. Depending on a destination, you can work in hostels and guest houses, fancy hotels, and someone’s homes.

If traveling to another country where you are not authorized to work, most likely you will be doing this job in exchange for housing and food only. Although some places are willing to pay a stipend.

If you are interested to check a few jobs, for the beginning, I suggest you take a look at Workaway  or Worldpackers  websites. They are the most known. However, I am writing another blog post on how and where to find housekeeping jobs around the world. So make sure to check it later.

Also, I recommend you checking a few courses in housekeeping ( like this one ,) if you are willing to find a housekeeping job quickly in a hotel or rent your property on Airbnb.

3. Member of an Archaeological or Geological Expedition

In order to work as an archeologist, you must have higher academic education and at least some experience. However, excavations and geological developments involve not only scientists and archeologists but also unskilled workers who can do some simple work.

If you get a chance to join the expedition, you will be able to travel to a historical place, touch the antiquities, and communicate with highly intelligent people. Some decide to pursue a degree in this field after participating in a few expeditions while others, mainly students, choose this opportunity mainly for traveling.

If you decide to start looking for these jobs, keep in mind a few things. First, you must have good health, stamina, and be physically prepared. The work is associated with archaeological expeditions always takes place in different climates. A person should not have any allergies, especially to materials of organic origin.

This type of work can be done both individually and in a team. Therefore, those who apply should be also emotionally stable, calm, and patient.

Jobs That Require Travel And No Degree

4. traveling photographer job.

Before you jump to the next job, don’t skip this one, thinking that you know everything about a job as a photographer.

Becoming a professional traveling photographer can open a door to endless opportunities if you are ready to invest time and be disciplined. It can go from something as simple as selling or licensing your own photographs and being able to travel to huge photo shoots abroad for the client’s expense. 

However, don’t assume that a desire to travel and the ability to see good potential shots are enough to start this career.

First of all, you’ll need to buy the right type of camera  and have patience – both in anticipation (and creation) for a good shot, and in terms of building a career. You definitely won’t become a star in a month, so expect to study and practice a lot.

Also, you’ll need the stamina to withstand the rhythm of work and business skills to sell your services.

So, if you decide to seriously take up photography, first of all, start studying. Yet at the beginning of your journey, you don’t need any expensive online photographer courses for beginners . Seriously, it’s just a waste of money. These days, there is a huge amount of absolutely free information and you can easily learn the basics with that. YouTube is your friend here .

Later with time, when moving to the next level, you’d probably need to buy a course (also optional.) But on initial stages, there is no need for that.

5. Traveling Jobs in Agro-Tourism (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms)

Voluntary Organic Farm Workers is a trend that getting more and more popular each year. Organic farms exist in at least 50 countries and you can go to any place you feel like.

The job basically includes 4-6 hours a day of work 5-6 days per week. In exchange, you receive accommodation and food. No one owes anything to anyone – it is some type of exchange without money.

To become a member of the program, the farmer provides evidence of the ecological cleanliness of his farm and pays an annual fee. Volunteers also pay a fee when register on the website.

While this is technically not a job, you still get most of the expenses covered in exchange for work. Today you can be collecting coffee in Brazil, grapes in France or olives in Italy, and tomorrow fly to Australia to pick the peaches.

6. Tourist Entertainer

Here is another job for people who like to travel. A tourist entertainer is a person who conducts various celebratory and entertainment events and himself acts in them as an actor. The task is to maintain the joyful mood of the audience and participants.

There are 3 different types of entertainers :

– Those who work with children – usually with children under the age of 14. Most in demand at children’s parties. – Entertainers who work on corporate programs – they usually help a corporate leader in hosting games and competitions and participates in promotions and presentations. – Entertainers at the hotel – work in hotels located in resort areas. There, they engage in entertainment programs for people of all age groups.

If you want to travel the world, then you have to look for jobs in the last category. Jobs for entertainers at hotels are seasonal and permanent. The biggest demand is in the areas with all-inclusive hotels.

This job perfectly suits actors and is perfect for cheerful and sociable people . Your chances are even higher if you speak other languages.

7. Truck Driver 

A career of a truck driver is an excellent option for those who don’t have a degree and don’t see themselves working in the office but who are eager to make good money pretty fast and travel around the country (and abroad.) And this is definitely a job with a lot of travel. 

However, the profession of a truck driver is rather a lifestyle. Despite the apparent simplicity, it is definitely not the easiest and safest job. And it doesn’t fit everyone. This job is difficult and a driver should be in good shape, physically and emotionally.

Still, there are many benefits, a good salary, and ability to travel.

Yeah, I get that you don’t experience a lot from behind the wheel. But you still see different sceneries, cities and smaller towns when driving through them. Also, you may see something while having rest time.

By the law (depending on the country,) a driver can drive a truck for a certain period of time and then have 10-20 hour rest. In the USA for example, the rest time is usually 10-12 hours and driving hours cannot exceed 11 hours. So you decide how to spend your rest time.

Another thing, some truck driving jobs are among the highest paying travel jobs.

According to the Bureau of Labor, the salary in America varies from $30,000 to $120,000 a year. It depends on qualifications, experience, the state, and the company you work for. Check this excellent source  for more details. 

How to Find a Job of a Truck Driver 

First of all, the qualifications.

In order to become a truck driver, you do not need to have a degree. In general, education is not important here.

The main thing is to be at least 21 years old (for the US,) pass a drug and alcohol test, undergo a physical exam, attend a truck driving school training which will prepare you for a commercial driver’s license test and knowledge, and then get your license in DMV.

I have never personally thought about becoming a truck driver. So I can’t share much about this job. It is somewhat similar to working in a large resort hotel since the territory of modern ocean liners is quite comparable to the size of coastal hotel complexes.

9. Au-Pair as One of the Best Travel Jobs For Young People

I wouldn’t be recommending this job if I didn’t do it myself and didn’t know how much it can pay you back. Also, with the au-pair job, a lot of families never ask for any degree. Experience – yes, CPR certificate – yes. Degree – no.

Every time I am thinking about my au-pair years I am getting a warm and comforting feeling inside. I wish I could actually go back in time and replay those moments again.

Some people will say that au-pair is not a job, but an exchange program. That is true, but at the same time, it is a job you do for others. And very often you can find au-pair jobs that require travel and allow you to travel during your free time. You work a full-time schedule and put a lot of effort in taking care of little ones. And yes, taking care of children is a job no matter what other people tell you.

Au-pair salary is not high, but taking into consideration that all your expenses are covered, the pocket money you get from a family is more than enough.

I was able to travel on my monthly au-pair salary, save up for my first car, and buy lots of unnecessary things. Families I lived with were traveling from time to time, so it provided me with an amazing opportunity to see a little bit of the U.S .

An au-pair job is not a short-term job for carefree people who don’t have a plan for their life. It is a very rewarding and enriching experience. It can grow into any other job related to children and their development.

CARE.COM – This website is not an au-pair site but there you can find a lot of live-in nanny positions as well as housekeeping, senior care, pet care, tutoring, and special needs jobs. It covers mainly the USA and Canada.

Honestly, I have never really thought that I would ever recommend blogging as one of those great jobs that pay you to travel. And actually, if you make it as a career, it will pay very well. You don’t have to choose a niche in travel (especially during these times) to start working online and be able to travel (or live) anywhere in the world.

Once you make money online from your own website, you decide where and when to go. You still may need to travel to conferences, meetups, and various events to grow as a professional and learn. Although with a new corona-world, there will be more online events than actual physical ones.

A professional blogger is not really a traveling job that requires travel. It is rather a fantastic job that gives you more freedom and time to travel whenever you want.

I started to blog 2 years ago and today I am making enough from my blog to be able to live in a developing country and cover the expenses of three people. Not enough yet to live a luxury lifestyle in the U.S. but enough not to go back to a cubical lifestyle.

13. Virtual Assistant

I am strongly convinced that the job of a virtual assistant is a fantastic job that lets you travel, move around a lot, and helps you choose where to live.

The person who is somewhat a universal specialist who helps an entrepreneur conduct business through the Internet. He/she plays a very similar role as a personal assistant but everything is taking place online instead of the actual office. A virtual assistant answers emails, works on a schedule, does some social media work, creates presentations, organizes webinars, arranges mailing services, and does any other task that a person he works for needs.

Depending on previous experience, the assistant may specialize in one field or another. But in general, this is a person who knows how the Internet works, can find the right service, write a request, control contractors and be the “many-armed” multi-worker who knows how to make other person life easier.

I actually don’t believe you can qualitatively and deeply experience a new destination during your layover, or a few of them. But with flight attendant job you can be based in a new city and/or country, and fly for free all over the world during your days off or vacation.

When you are working as a commercial flight attendant, you usually fly standby. Many people don’t take nanny positions seriously, believing it’s not prestigious to be a babysitter. I’ve heard some people saying that only uneducated and unambitious individuals work as nannies because there is nothing else they can do with their lives. Ouch, hearing that hurts. Because in reality, working as a Nanny is very demanding, rewarding, and joyful at the same time. This job requires a patient, knowledgeable, and loving heart.

And what, if I tell you that as a Professional Nanny you can travel the world and earn up to $200K per year? It is one of the careers that require travel for sure. 

A professional nanny is a relatively new term and gaining popularity among both families and nannies.

There are some distinct differences between this job and a Babysitter or a Nanny.

As a Professional Nanny , you have to be CPR and First Aid certified, hold a degree in any field related to childcare, have more than five years of experience working as a babysitter, au-pair, and/or nanny for a high-profile family.

If you are just starting out as a nanny, there is no point in spending your time on professional nanny applications. In most cases, the agency will turn down everyone who doesn’t have any solid experience. So for that situation, it would be much better to start looking for a regular nanny position.

Keep in mind that competition is very high and only the best of the best applicants get a job. 

In regards to agencies, there are a lot of them in America and Europe. For the most part, they have offices in different parts of the world, so you can apply with the closest to your location branch.

What is particularly great about this job is the length of contracts. Some of them are as long as 13 weeks. After the contract is over you are free to take a break or sign a new contract to move to another place. Event-Planner is a specialist who organizes business and entertainment events for companies and individuals. This person works closely with a client to decide where an event will take place and where to hold it. He or she is responsible for thorough planning and organization.

Recently, on my trip to Vilnius , I met a girl, who was organizing our trip, who was an event manager. She shared how she was traveling around Europe and arranging events for her company at least once a month. Her company was participating in various trade shows and travel conferences, so her task was to organize everything.

If you are looking for entry-level jobs that require travel and if you have at least some relevant experience , then look for jobs in event agencies, especially those that are related to travel in one way or another. Some of the examples are companies that participate in large business forums, event agencies that organize a wedding in an exotic place or a master class in a foreign land, etc.

Despite the popularity of the profession, there is no such major as event management or event planning in any university. The event industry employs people with the most diverse backgrounds, but more often those who are psychologists, journalists, and philologists.

This profession also intersects with marketing, PR, and sales. Therefore, if you have a marketing or management degree and at least some experience, your chances of getting this job are high.

21. SAP Consultant

SAP consultant job is one of those jobs that can literally take you around the world.

The term SAP software stands for Systems Applications and Products in Data Processing. This software was developed by a German company and helps many companies around the world to manage business operations and customer relations.

SAP consultant is basically a person who knows everything about SAP software and can give advice. In many cases, he or she is an expert, project manager, and programmer at the same time.

There are two areas in this field where SAP consultants can work: Technical or Functional . Technical stands for software development and programming . Functional is all about the knowledge of tariffs, commissions, revenue shares, interfaces, and more. It is really impossible to describe this job in a few paragraphs only. First of all, even if you go to the actual office, you often have to be with a customer who can be located in another city or often country. I have two friends who work as SAP Consultants. One friend is working remotely and occasionally travels to meet with her customers. And this friend is saying that working as an SAP consultant is one of the best IT jobs that requires travel, literally. 

Another friend’s husband is working physically in the office. I have the impression that he signs a new contract every year because they are always on the move. With this job, both of them have already lived in Brazil, Sri Lanka, in a few states in the United States and recently they moved to Germany.

This job is also challenging and requires certification. But it pays very well and helps you live a life of travel. One of my friends, who does it, has never even been to college. She has taken a few courses and dedicated a lot of time to self-education.

As with any other profession, there is no easy job and free money. You have to work and study hard. But if others can do it, you can too.

22. Luxury Travel Advisor

A luxury travel advisor is not the job of a travel agent that you may think of. Travel agents usually book tickets, hotels, or transfers. They sell cruises and all-inclusive resort getaways. Sweet. But.

Luxury travel advisors’ job is kind of similar and different at the same time. These people also make lots of reservations and travel arrangements, yet they work on a totally different level. They usually have access to world-class events, private islands, resorts, and hotels, and work with only a special caliber of a traveler. Not like us, kind of budget travelers who are trying to get the most out of a dollar.

Luxury travel advisors offer luxury, organize everything in the blink of an eye, and always deliver the highest service. To give you an example: they provide their clients with access to the Monaco Formula 1 , Millionaire’s Row at the Kentucky Derby , help them walk the red carpet of a fashion week, sing on stage with a favorite band, and even travel to space. Those kinds of experiences.

At some point in my life, I was aiming at this job at Virtuoso – a network of the best luxury travel agencies . I didn’t get it but if I did, my job would include lots of travel and my starting salary was going to be 55K per year (in Los Angeles.) At the same time, full health insurance was provided along with all the perks and discounts on travel, and lots of room for growth.

A luxury travel advisor job is very demanding. It is not all glitter but this traveling career provides an opportunity to travel the world and be able to make six figures within a few years (after lots of hard work, of course.) Here is more information on this job, if you are curious.

23. Geologists

Among all the jobs for travelers, the job of a geologist is probably the least known one. Geologists are specialists who study the structure, composition, and patterns of Earth’s development. They examine minerals, sedimentary rocks, what’s happening in the earth’s crust, analyze earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, the historical sequence of geological processes, and much more.

There are a few different specializations in geology. Some geologists work for oil and gas exploration companies, others for civil engendering firms, or government agencies. Petroleum and engineering geologists most of the time travel to various distinct areas with a goal to locate gas and oil deposits.

In addition to conducting laboratory analyses, developing documentation and recommendations, such specialists from time to time go to faraway regions. They search for mineral deposits, assess the possibility of building various structures in new territories, from factories and power plants to the metro.

On the one hand, the profession of a geologist makes it possible to visit both the remote corners of the Taiga and lesser-visited hot African countries. On the other hand, you need to be prepared to live in various (often challenging) conditions, so for working in the field, in addition to the necessary knowledge, you will need good physical preparation and endurance.

24. English or Any Other Subject Teacher

Nowadays everyone is writing about English Teaching jobs as a perfect opportunity to see the world and make pretty good money. And this opportunity is awesome indeed. But what about other teaching jobs?

I have been tutoring kids in math, science, and social studies as well as the Russian language . My friend, who is from Hungary, moved to Sweden because she was offered a job as a piano instructor. My other friend is teaching Spanish in South America. The list goes on and on.

Mark and I have been also teaching English while living in Vietnam  and were offered a job in Thailand and China. Salary, accommodation, and working conditions were so appealing that we almost signed the contract.

The reason why we changed our minds was that we wanted to concentrate on remote work and invest time in our blog. But chances are still high enough that we may reconsider this option in the nearest future.

What interests us more though is online teaching . No obligations to be at a specific place or country. We can be teaching outside of the classroom while exploring the world on our own terms. So can you.

You don’t have to be an English teacher for securing a good teaching job. Nowadays, you can be teaching so many other things and subjects. Choose what you know well, what you love teaching, and pursue your dream.

Where to Find a Job as an English Teacher? 

Before you even start looking for a job, the first thing to do is to get certified. Most schools will ask for TEFL/TESOL/CELTA teaching certification, so get ready for that in advance.

There are many different online teaching courses where you can study and get a needed certificate. I personally completed a course with i-to-i company . Later, when my legal name changed, they had no problem sending me a new certificate for a very symbolic payment.

Some of my favorite resources for finding a job as an English Teacher are Dave’s ESL Cafe , EslBase , and TEFL . For teaching English (and other languages) online, I had success with Tandem , Italki , 51Talk , and EF Education First . But there are many more agencies out there that connect teachers with schools and students.

25. auditor.

At first glance, the work of an auditor has nothing to do with travel. It seems that auditors never travel abroad but only work long hours in their offices. It is partially true. As an auditor, you work crazy long hours that sometimes it feels you live where you work.

Nonetheless, many times working as an auditor grows into a career that allows you to travel. Auditors often leave for inspections to different cities and even countries. Often they spend weeks and months in one place.

I have been working for Deloitte and one Private Equity in Ukraine and remember how many times my colleagues were away. They were gone to work on projects in many countries in Europe and in Central Asia.

Working as an auditor provides many travel opportunities but also a lot of challenges. Of course, it is not always possible to see exotic places. But you can often spend several weeks in different cities and countries which means you’ll have time to get acquainted with the local culture and lifestyle.

Working as an auditor is a very, very intense job. It requires a diploma and at least a few years of experience in a smaller company.

26. seasonal jobs to see the world.

Two years ago when we were in Alaska we took a tour to Denali National Park. Our bus driver was a 30-something lady from Texas, whose job as a bus driver was seasonal and lasted less than 6 months.

She shared details of working this job during the summer months and then heading to Colorado to work as a ski instructor during the winter . This young lady loved both of the states and kept coming to each of them every year. Besides the opportunity to enjoy her favorite places she was earning a salary and living the dream.

There are many stories like this one.

Our friends have traveled through Europe while working on farms, picking up berries, and being lifeguards at the pool. Some of our neighbors were diving instructors and camp leaders in Central America.

We personally have been offered seasonal jobs in hotels across the U.S. and Canada. Opportunities are endless and the sky is the limit. If you are looking for any possible way to move abroad or travel in slow mode while earning money, take a look at seasonal jobs.

Of course, you can’t make a fortune working those jobs. However, you can definitely have all your travel expenses covered and even save some money for the future. It really depends on the job and how much time you are willing to work.

To give you an example, there was a time when I secured one seasonal job in a resort in Utah. My salary was going to be around $1,600K per month before taxes with included accommodation and lunches. It was an entry-level job that required 40 hours of work per week. Not bad for someone in transition or traveler like me.

We are not implying that this is the amount of money you are going to get for your next seasonal job. You may get more, or you may get less. Some of the jobs require prerequisites and qualifications, but there are many others where you don’t need to have any specific experience. You’ll go through training and will learn what to perform.

27. Theater, Drama and Dance Performer

This field is a bit competitive to get into, but if you have experience and zest then don’t fret.

We meet more and more people who work as dancers and actors worldwide. They work on cruise ships, in summer camps and amusement parks. Jobs in this field exist across all borders and there are so many variations of them. You don’t need to be on the way to Los Angeles just to express yourself. Opportunities are ample worldwide and you have to spend some time searching for them.

Today you can be performing on the stage in China and in a few months fly to Turkey or Greece. Spend a few years in this field or make it a career. The choice is yours.

A lot of people travel the world and get paid while doing there hobbies. You can be the next one who’ll do the same.

Hi Tyler, to be able to become a luxury travel advisor, your first step is to build up your resume and show at least some experience in tourism, particularly the one when you need to book travel for clients or arrange various events.

Jobs that you’d need to have before applying for a luxury travel assistant are a travel agent, events manager, concierge in a luxury hotel, a variety of roles on a cruise ship where you are responsible for shore excursions, providing exceptional customer service to each guest, assisting guests with account inquires, resolving customer service issues, and answering telephone calls, and other jobs with similar responsibilities.

The most important is to start with something and have some experience to show. With 0 experience, your chance of getting a luxury travel assistant job is equal to 0 too unless you know how to network and have great connections.

Great article. I’ve always wanted to travel. Comfortbility restraint, fears and just life dramas held me back. I recently made the leap to Colombia from US. I have a H.S. diploma and 2 years or so of college so I have some credits. Questions is what to do now. I was injured and had surgery. I also have a dog but I don’t want to further let life pass me and just stair at walls or basically nothing. I just want to travel and experience different culture and indulge in sceneries. My background is mostly mechanical (automotive) and IT although I don’t hold certifications I mostly did repairs for all peripherals and smart devices but nothing long term. I was think of finishing school for medical probably nursing if not something with IT. As to how to make passive income from my research most of it requires investment. But again great piece and any response would well be appreciated.

Hi William, You are absolutely right, in order to make a change and especially passive income, you do need to be ready to invest money and your time. Without investment, you can’t move forward, no matter which field you choose. It’s difficult for me to recommend anything on this matter because everything depends on what you enjoy doing and either you are ready to devote time to education or not. But I can guarantee, if you don’t give up, you will succeed. For me personally, it took almost 3 years to reach my financial goal (it would be faster if not for covid), for other people it takes less time. So it is very relative. Just don’t hesitate and wait for better times, start today.

Are there *local* websites or places within Ukraine to list for a teacher/nanny when we relocate to Ukraine? My needs are a bit different (I think) than an au pair. Our children will be attending online school and while I am working, I need help with an English speaking teacher/nanny to assist with their schoolwork most days of the week and most months of the year – I would need someone who can speak English and Ukrainian (or Russian). I know some Russian and a little Ukrainian but I don’t even have a cyrillic keyboard (cannot make my chromebook to do this) so I can search for such things on the internet.

Yes, there are local agencies that help with finding a nanny and any other staff member for the family. Off the top of my head, I can recommend Sincere Heart agency and VIP Service. The 2nd company’s website is in Russian only but I know they help with finding English speaking nannies too (I was applying through their agency) and here is their contact page . You can send them a message directly or through the WhatsApp. All cell phone numbers and email are mentioned there as well. These agencies usually connect nannies with families in big major cities but they may be able to help to find someone in a smaller town too. Don’t hesitate to send them a message and get in touch!

Hi Mike, hotel jobs are great for people who look to explore new places at a slow pace. There are not really jobs where you need to travel. Instead, with hotel jobs you can transfer between properties within a relatively short period of time, in this way staying in one place 6-12 months. And that’s when you can travel on your own during days off and spare time.

The best jobs in hospitality where you can work up to 1 year and then transfer to a new property (or start looking for a new job in the same field) are in front office (reception, front desk agent, concierge, social media marketing receptionist, bellman, van driver, night auditor which by the way is always in demand), housekeeping, dining, maintenance, and spa.

But my number one tip – it is relatively easy to get au-pair job even without needed experience or education in child care, the main thing to stay professional and show all your intelligence. 1. Airline Pilot

People choose to become airline pilots for many reasons. Some love flying, others want to visit different locales every day.

Scheduled commercial and cargo airline pilots can be sent anywhere in the world. Depending on the pilot scheduling system, their schedule can bring them home at the end of the day or put them in a two-day layover elsewhere.

At some airlines, pilots can bid for their favorite schedules based on seniority. At other airlines, it’s randomly assigned. Either way, not knowing where you’ll be that day or later that month is quite exhilarating.

For charter airline pilots, the assignment can be even more exotic. Charter pilots never have the same flying schedule. A customer may require a flight to Asia, then another customer may require the same plane to fly a European route.

Being a cargo pilot can also be an exciting opportunity and similar to being a charter pilot. You can fly cargo and freight instead of passengers with most flights happening in the evening or early morning hours.

Salary for airline pilots can vary wildly. But the average salary for airline pilots is $113,167, according to Glassdoor, as of February 5, 2021.

How to Become a Commercial Pilot

If you’re looking for a way to check out cities around the world while working, being an airline pilot is the best way to do it.

Just keep in mind that years of training to become a pilot stands between you and the left seat in the cockpit.

You may first decide to join the military to receive your pilot training and also help pay for college with a scholarship.

But you will also need to obtain a commercial pilot’s license and other advanced training.

2. Flight Attendant

Much like airline pilots, flight attendants enjoy the same sort of globetrotting lifestyle as their colleagues in the cockpit.

Most commercial flight attendants follow three types of scheduling systems:

• Based on seniority (Preferential Bid System)
• Bid on an already strung together group of shifts (line bidding)
• Random assignment without choice

Flight attendants could end up on multi-day itineraries with one or two-day layovers in exotic destinations. Or they could be set up with an out-and-back schedule that has them back in their own bed at the end of the day.

A layover means an opportunity to check out an exotic locale while the airline pays for your hotel. Although, you’ll have to work the flights to and from.

Both flight attendants and pilots are entitled to flight benefits. They can fly anywhere they want during their off-time, as long as there’s a seat available.

Flight attendants also enjoy a relatively high salary. According to Salary.com, the median annual flight attendant salary is $77,602, as of February 5, 2021.

How to Become a Flight Attendant

Becoming a flight attendant is a selective process.

For example, of the 150,000 people that applied to be a flight attendant at Delta Airlines, only 1% were actually selected to go on. That’s a worse acceptance rate than the Harvard class of 2021, according to Business Insider .

To get started as flight attendant, be sure to check an airline’s website for open recruiting season.

Note: Due to the pandemic, many commercial airlines have a hiring freeze for new flight attendants.

3. Travel Nurse

A subset of the nursing industry you may not be familiar with are traveling nurses. These nurses work on temporary contracts to ease nursing shortages and stick around for a few weeks or a few months at each hospital.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, traveling nurses have been helping at understaffed hospitals and administer the vaccine.

Staffing or travel agencies may offer housing or travel reimbursements. Hotels may also offer discounts but you can consider these hotel alternatives for more privacy.

One of the big allures is that traveling nurses get to pick where they go next and it may be a spontaneous decision.

Currently, 34 states participate in a Nurse Licensure Compact . The NLC allows nurses who reside in a participating state to be able to practice as a nurse in another participating state.

This compact makes being a traveling nurse within participating states much easier, as a nurses’ license is much more portable.

Travel nurses make $71,179 a year on average, according to Glassdoor.com.

Quite a handsome salary for being able to work and travel at the same time. But some COVID-19 traveling nurses are making as much as $10,000 per week, according to Nurse.org .

How to Become a Traveling Nurse

To become a travel nurse, you should look for placement/employment agencies and nurse staffing agencies.

These agencies may offer benefits to travel nurses that you would expect with full-time permanent nurses, such as 401(k) and health benefits.

The basic requirements to become a traveling nurse include having at least one or two years of nursing experience. Being a Registered Nurse (RN) is helpful too.

4. Management Consultant

Friends and family members who work for companies like McKinsey & Company and Accenture are likely consultants. You’re most likely going to be self-employed and may not earn benefits unless you open a Solo 401k or a similar retirement plan.

While their expertise may differ, they’re likely working for a client in a distant town to solve a business problem.

A common schedule among consultants is a Sunday evening or Monday morning departure to the Client’s city. They’ll spend the next few days and nights there and then fly home on a Thursday evening.

They’ll continue doing this for as long as the client needs them. When the contract is concluded, they’ll spend time in the office until dispatched to another client’s project.

Due to the extensive flying involved in many projects, many consultants earn elite status in airline and hotel programs. That means when it comes time to travel for vacation, they enjoy the perks of their work.

However, the downside is the extensive travel to a destination that’s not of your own choosing. But you want to be on the go and have a knack for solving business problems, becoming a consultant may be a dream job.

The average pay for management consultants is about $87,805, according to PayScale. But large annual bonuses are typical in this industry.

How to Become a Management Consultant

There are many paths to becoming a consultant as a recent college graduate or a corporate professional.

Many consulting firms look to hire candidates with these traits:

• Have a university degree in business administration
• Obtain professional accreditations or industry certifications
• Possess in-depth research skills
• Have project management experience

You may have to first work for a consulting firm to gain experience. In time, you might be able to start your own business and consult your own clients.

5. Tour Guide/Tour Leader

You may be an excellent tour guide if your knowledgable about these facts:

As a tour leader, you can lead sightseeing tours of countries, cities, and cultural treasures You can also lead guided experiences as an Airbnb host .

Due to the pandemic, providing online experiences is another portal to explore as people explore the world from their living room.

“There are jobs touring the general sights of countries, sailing the Nile in a dhow, guiding safaris, mountain biking, doing European cultural tours, riding horses, carrying out conservation work, driving overland trucks, walking and leading family trips,” says Wanderlust .

They also cite that while some leaders only work during peak season, many do it as a full time job.

Of course, there is naturally a downside to this. You’re following a fixed itinerary set forth by the tour company, although this could change from tour to tour. You’re also living out of a backpack, which could be a pro or a con, depending on your disposition.

In addition, the average pay for tour leaders is $50,013, according to GlassDoor. Relying on tips is a must in this occupation if you only earn an hourly rate.

You can also use your tour guide experience to be a travel agent. It’s possible to help people visit your city or direct them to other great destinations.

How to Become a Tour Leader

If you have leadership and interpersonal skills, this may be the job for you.

6. Civil Servant

Working for the government may not seem like a well-traveled job, but it can be. You could be stationed elsewhere domestically or internationally.

Some of the most common civil service jobs include:

• Law enforcement
• Secret Service
• Public relations for a federal agency

You may not have much influence where you travel to, depending on the agency and its seniority structure.

Just remember that you will likely need to take a competency-based exam, like a civil service exam, in order to be considered.

In particular, with the federal government, the pay is known upfront. Your potential for advancement and future raises is well documented in publicized pay scales/pay grade.

The average civil servant earns $76,504 according to GlassDoor. However, pay rates can vary widely as the federal government has many employees in travel and non-travel fields.

How to Become a Civil Servant

A civil service job is a career path that is well documented and transparent. You will know your future potential income before you apply.

7. International Aid Worker/NGO

Working as an international aid worker or for a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) can be very fulfilling. If you have a sense of purpose, social justice and compassion, it can be a very satisfying job.

International Aid Workers might perform these roles:

• Feed the poor
• Counsel refugees
• Provide medical care
• Offer microfinancing
• Teach children

NGO‘s can be found everywhere, even in industrialized countries. They all have various roles in improving the lives of the communities they serve.

In other words, being an international aid worker doesn’t mean you have to be off-the-grid in the middle of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Pay can range wildly. Humanitarian aid program directors can stand to make at least $52,000 to start, says internationalrelationsedu.org .

In the Peace Corps, you’ll train for three months and then serve two years in the country of assignment.

The most common placement for volunteers is in Africa, with 46% of the volunteer force located there in 2017. You’ll receive a living allowance, along with medical and dental care.

The most common job for volunteers involves education and in health.

Being a Peace Corps volunteer is also one way to pay off student loans quickly .

9. English Teacher

A popular job for those in their 20’s is to become an English Teacher in a foreign country.

The most notable need for these teachers is in countries where both the written alphabet and spoken words are not rooted in Germanic language, such as South Korean, Japan, China and other Asian countries.

For English as a Second Language (ESL) students, they strive to learn English to advance their career, broaden their horizons, and possibly travel or work internationally.

As an English Teacher, you’re providing their communication lifeline and the opportunity for upward mobility through language education for foreign students.

The average pay for English teachers abroad vary wildly. In Japan, the pay is about $1,700 to $5,000 a month, according to gooverseas.com .

One teacher even documented her journey to making $100,000 a year teaching overseas.

English teachers abroad often work through placement agencies, who provide salary and sometimes housing and other assistance.

One thing to note, English teachers in foreign countries are foreign workers and subject to visa restrictions set forth by those countries.

There have been reports of placement agencies and schools taking advantage of English teachers who are unfamiliar with local laws and customs. Conduct your due diligence.

Due to travel restrictions, you can also teach English online . This opportunity lets you connect with students across the world. You can also gain teaching experience.

10. Field Service Technician

If you’re a tradesman, being a field service technician may be a good career move if you want to travel for work.

Every industry relies on machines and components to function properly in order for workers to do their job. Technicians travel to repair and maintain equipment for clients.

You might work on these machines and components:

• Generators for electrical utilities
• Cell phone towers
• IT-related setups (i.e., computer systems, headsets)

All of these jobs require service technicians to go into the field to work on these machines. We’re not talking about fixing refrigerators in your own town.

But rather, machines that are installed hundreds of miles from the nearest town.

When those machines go down, Field Service Technicians go to work. On their own or as a team, they drive to wherever they’re needed.

They setup their own work site, figure out how to fix the problem, and then report back to the home office.

They may stay on the road for days or weeks at a time, visiting distant client offices or rural equipment installations.

These technicians never know where they’ll be, but they know they’ll be touring around their assigned territory to ensure that their company’s machines are always working.

The average pay for field service technicians is 52,984, according to Glassdoor.

11. Professional Yacht Crew

A professional yacht crew ensures a yacht is always functional, ready and mechanically sound on a moment’s notice.

Their clients, the yacht owner, is most likely very discerning. Whether for work or play, the owner wants the very best crew for their big investment.

Professional yacht crew live on the yacht itself. Each member of the crew has an essential function, but they must work together to keep the yacht in tip-top shape.

A professional yacht crew has the following roles:

• Captain: steering the yacht
• Chief Stewart: caring for the guests and staff
• Engineer: managing all onboard systems
• Deckhand: assisting superiors, loading cargo and performing maintenance

Some people may think of working on a yacht as an extended vacation. It is, most definitely, not.

However, most all of your living expenses are taken care of while working on a yacht. You are provided housing, a uniform and anything you could need by the owner.

Your salary goes straight into your bank account.

12. Cruise Ship Staff

• Medical staff
• Entertainer

But there are many more postions that many don’t think of.

Modern cruise ships are basically floating cities. Every function you can imagine in a city is contained on a boat.

But every job is oriented to making a customer’s vacation pleasant and enjoyable.

Cruise ship staff members typically sign contracts to work on a ship for a set duration of time. You’ll be provided with housing, food, health care and a salary.

13. Au Pairs

Being an Au Pair is a job of trust. Families are relying on you to help raise their children.  You’ll run errands involving the children (i.e. picking up kids from school) and attend to the child’s need.

One night, you may be tasked with helping the child with their homework. On another night, you may spend hours playing with the children.

No two days are the same, as the position is multifaceted.

But being an Au Pair is different from being a Nanny in one very fundamental way. Au Pairs are often from another country.

Au Pairs live with the host family, learning about their culture and language. In exchange for the lodging, food, and the experience, the Au Pair provides childcare and associated services.

Au Pair’s stipends typically average just under $200 a week, or $800 a month, according to Glassdoor.

It’s often a leap of faith to become an Au Pair, as you’re also putting your trust in the host family.

Many Au Pairs use a placement agency, which requires interviews, references, and screening.

Au Pairs must also obtain a visa or satisfy any other entry requirements to be in that country, which is normally disclosed by the placement agency.

14. Teacher (of any kind)

If you have a knack for teaching others a skill, you may be able to be a teacher and travel at the same time. Teachers are always in demand.

You can teach these subjects:

• Substitute K-12 teacher
• Computer programming
• Ski instructor

Your skills are in demand somewhere in the world and oftentimes schools have term-limited contracts to fill. Either during peak seasons or as an ongoing need throughout the year.

You can hop around to different schools in different locations teaching what you love.

And if you can’t find a school that offers a position in a field you are an expert in, you could set up your own class.

As an entrepreneur, you could rent out a yoga studio to teach your own yoga classes, for example. Or you could teach the teacher, providing training services to those who teach other students.

At the most basic, you could also be a substitute teacher for a K-12 school. The assignments change daily, and you’re often paid a substantial daily rate, sometimes $100 a day or more.

Salaries can vary wildly as a traveling teacher and the subject field you’re in.

Some teach jobs require certification, so be sure to see if you need to pursue additional certificates before being a traveling teacher.

15. Bartending

Wherever you go in the world, there’s a neighborhood bar to keep the locals happy. Every one of those bars requires a skilled bartender to recommend drinks, serve customers, and build a robust beer, wine, and cocktails list.

But being a service industry job, bartending jobs are often high turnover jobs.

Chances are, if you’re skilled at bartending, you’ll be able to snag a job anywhere you go.

Furthermore, elite bartenders (mixologists) often compete in cocktail making competitions, making them very desirable in major metropolitan cities.

These mixologists can command a salary premium working behind the bar. But they can also make great money consulting for bars as well.

According to jobshadow.com, a mixologist can make $200-$400 a shift. As a consultant, they could earn $100-$500 a recipe.

Either way, bartenders rely on tips to keep their occupation sustainable. Tips in the hundreds of dollars are not unheard of during every shift.

To become a bartender, you’ll need to study up on drinks. You may be able to get a foot in the door by becoming a barback first.

As with any job, you’ll need to work your way up and demonstrate to the bar owner that you have the chops to interact with his or her customers.

16. Busking/Street Performer

Believe it or not, there are a lot of people who make a living busking around the world.

Whether they’re performing a musical instrument or putting on another type of performance for the crowd, busking can be lucrative for those who can put on a unique show or demonstrate unsurpassed talent.

For performers, busking also gives them a chance to either break into the industry or try out new projects. And busking also allows them to hone their craft and build a following.

According to Mentalfloss , many celebrities first got their start busking, including:

While salaries vary wildly for buskers, Time magazine interviewed one successful busker who made $21.22 an hour.

How to Become a Street Performer

This occupation isn’t for the faint of heart.

It takes hard work, dedication and time dedicated to honing your craft. But if you build a following and catch a good opportunity, the upside potential is very high.

17. Freelance Graphic/Website Designer

If there’s a most obvious occupation that could be completely location-independent, it’s freelance graphic and website designers.

The work is one part creative and one part analytical. But the only thing you need to get the job done is a laptop, software, and an internet connection.

This is an online job with no investment necessary to start. As your skills improve, you can upgrade to better software and marketing tools.

As long as you can market yourself and find new clients, you can complete the work anywhere you want.

Freelance graphic and website designers need to stay abreast of software and design developments in the industry.

That means constant re-training and re-familiarization with new software. And being a freelancer, you’re also responsible for health care, taxes, and the like.

On the flip side, you could take your job to a low-cost country, raking in pay at the rate of a higher-wage country. Your clients will never know the difference if you’re at home or on a beach in the Caribbean.

According to Glassdoor, the average salary for these kinds of freelancers is about $56,000-$60,000 a year.

How to Become a Website Designer

If you’d like to become a freelance graphic or website designer, it’s useful to have some experience working at an office-based design job or design agency first.

Once you’ve got the foundational skills down pat, you’ll need to learn how to strike out on your own and build up a clientele.

There are many books and resources available on how to become a freelancer. Many freelancers also write about their experience online through their own personal blog.

Also consider starting a blog to display your prior work and tell clients how to contact you.

18. Truck Driver

Many Americans tend to ignore the logistics of how items get to a store for purchase. It normally involves truck drivers as the essential link between a distribution warehouse and the local store, bringing products to customers in need.

In fact, according to Time magazine, “ …80% of U.S. communities depend on truck drivers for the delivery of everyday goods. ”

Truck drivers traverse America and sometimes across land borders into Canada and Mexico as well as well.

Long-distance truckers may haul these items:

• Products for sale
• Postal mail
• Heavy equipment
• Anything else you can think of

The arrangement between the truck driver and its employer can vary wildly.

Some truck drivers are sub-contracted, meaning they use a company’s truck to deliver the company’s goods. You may earn less but can enjoy benefits like cheap health insurance .

Others are owner-operators, which means they own and operate their own truck, picking up assignments and contracts along the way.

Whatever the arrangement, being a truck driver puts you on the road for hours and days at a time. While you are away from your family, you get to see all of America and maybe more.

19. Railroad Worker

While this is a pretty broad label, railroad workers can travel along the tracks to complete their jobs. Some work on the track itself, others operate the trains.

The most common railroad positions that require travel are the train crews and operations supervisors.

Every one of these jobs is essential to ensure that goods and passengers flow across our vast nationwide network of railroads.

It’s more cost-effective and environmentally-friendly to ship by rail than truck in many instances.

Whatever the job, rail aficionados will be well served to consider a job in the railroad industry. The median pay for railroad workers is $65,020 and there are about 105,500 Americans working in the industry, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

How to Start Working for the Railroad

To become a railroad worker, you’ll need to have a high school diploma to start. You’ll often start with on-the-job training for your career field.

Being an operations supervisor can require a four-year degree or relevant work experience if you don’t start as a non-supervisory employee.

Many openings for for freight railroads. However, you can also look for opening at Amtrak and other passenger rail carriers.

20. Be a “Rental Foreigner” in China

Renting a foreigner is a phenomenon in China that may regain in popularity once international travel restrictions relent.

Chinese companies often hire White or foreign looking individuals to stand in as a pretend CEO or other important figure to lend credibility.

This could be a mainland Chinese company looking to gain traction on the international stage or a local real estate development looking to woo new buyers into their community.

From an outsider’s perspective, it could be seen as a deceitful occupation. But for Chinese businesses, it’s business as usual. Especially in a country where creating a fantasy world of pomp-and-circumstance is important.

CNN interviewed a few of these actors. One pretended to be an “architect from New York…giv[ing] design plans for a new museum to local officials.”

Another actor “was paid 2,000 yuan (about $300) to fly, along with a couple of Russian models, to a small city in the central province of Henan where he delivered a speech for the grand opening ceremony of a jewelry store there.”

Bottom line, being a foreign actor in China is a good way to make some extra cash while learning all about a new country. If you can put aside your moral scruples, then the work may also prove to be interesting as well.

21. Roadies

Often the invisible hands behind a concert, roadies have the job of working with famous bands to make sure their tours go off without a hitch.

As the band visits city after city, roadies move equipment and set up the stage.

Roadie jobs include:

• Sound engineering
• Stage hands
• Lighting technicians
• Guitar technicians
• Pyrotechnician

But more likely than not, you’ll start out your roadie career moving equipment. This role is the bottom of the roadie totem pole but you make money traveling.

You’ll need the appropriate skills to work each job as a roadie. Especially when it comes to technical positions like sound engineer.

Pay can vary wildly. According to careersinmusic.com, roadies can expect to be paid $80 to $400 a show. According to a Wall Street Journal story , roadies average $57,000 a year, with some cases making up to $200,000 a year for larger name celebrities.

22. Travel Videographer/Photographer

Being a traveling creative professional can be lucrative. Especially when that job involves being a videographer or photographer focused on the world of travel.

If your job is to document the art of traveling, you must travel to do the work.

A travel videographer or photographer should not be confused with a traveling videographer or traveling photographer.

Being able to transport yourself to a shoot is not a unique skillset. However, appropriately capturing the beauty of a locale is a unique skill.

Jobs in this area can vary wildly.

You could work for production company that’s responsible for producing a show about traveling. Or you could actually be hired by a tourism agency to be a capture their country in the best light.

Another possibility is traveling and selling photos and videos to various outlets for money.

Whatever the deal is, having a good creative eye is essential in a job like this.

You’ll never know where you’ll end up, but you need to make sure you capture that locale in the best light.

How to Become a Travel Photographer

Finding a job as a travel videographer or photographer is not for the faint of heart.

You may want to build up a portfolio of work to show to potential clients.

Or, you may want to work at a travel marketing or tourism agency first to develop contacts in the industry while honing your skills on the side.

23. Athletic Scout

How did the most famous sports players become famous? By having their talent recognized by a scout.

Athletic scouts travel the country year-round to find the newest talent playing in the field or on the court. It takes a keen eye, sharp intuition and a good understanding of sports and player performance stats to be a good scout.

Of course, all of this traveling means you’ll be watching hundreds of local sports games. Which means a lot of sitting for the traveling and game watching portion of the job. But you’ll be handsomely rewarded for doing so.

The average salary of a professional sports scout is $58,971 a year, according to payscale.com .

How to Become an Athletic Scout

To become an athletic scout, it takes one-part skill and one-part luck. You’ll need to start with a college degree and have extensive experience playing sports yourself, along with proper certifications.

Then, you’ll need to find a job as a part-time talent scouter. Sometimes, that means working independently or with a team. You’ll cultivate a relationship with the team itself and build trust with them that you can identify good potential talent.

Next, you’ll need to build your contact list as you travel. Coaches want to trust that a scout has a good eye and great reach within a pool of talent.

Being an independent scout may require extensive travel at your own expense. Being able to book cheap flights can help you attend more games.

No matter which of these jobs you choose, you can rest assured that you’ll get to travel as a part of your job.  That means you’ll get to see the country, or the world, while getting paid. 

Some jobs involve much more labor than others, but either way, you won’t be stuck in a dimly lit cubical farm again.

15 Jobs That Can Earn You Airline Status Within A Year

TPG got into the points and miles game at a very young age , and a number of our readers are following suit. We have a number of high school and college students in the TPG Lounge on Facebook, and a handful have asked for suggestions on career options that involve a lot of travel. To that end, here are some of the best suggestions from our TPG Lounge members as well as our own research.

While other guides may suggest pursuing a lifestyle of travel by Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) or becoming an Instagram influencer, we decided to focus on career paths that are most likely to earn you that coveted status on the company dime.

One caveat: One of the highest-profile careers in the travel industry actually won't earn you airline status. Working for an airline will get you phenomenal travel benefits , including free or deeply discounted flights for you, and buddy passes for a number of designated family members and companions. But no, you won't hold that coveted top elite status except on flights you purchase on an airline that doesn't employ you, like everyone else. In fact, your "free" travel will usually require you to wait on standby, and be prioritized below any paid fare. However, your constant stays around the world could help you earn lifetime status with hotels very quickly — not a bad consolation prize.

Some of the more obvious career paths that will earn you airline status within a year include:

1. Management Consulting

Management consulting is usually the first option mentioned in conjunction with careers that involve travel with airline, hotel, and rental car status. Just how much travel do these jobs entail?

"Almost any major consulting firm (Deloitte, McKinsey, Bain, etc.) will require a lot of travel, although fairly repetitive. Most of those firms have a 4/1 or 3/2 structure (4 days in the client office, 1 day in your home office) that mean you'll be traveling every week. But you'll be traveling to the same place every week (most likely) for the duration of your project. Big accounting firms like Ernst&Young can also have a fairly heavy travel schedule, especially around corporate tax season." – Tracy V.

As a bonus for status chasers: Many of the top consulting firms have corporate contracts with airlines that may allow you to skip status-match challenges.

"If you work for a large company that has millions of dollars in the travel budget, make sure you reach out to your corporate travel agent and see if any agreements for status have been negotiated," says TPG writer Richard Kerr. "... A registration form for Deloitte had the option to skip a Delta challenge and be matched for a one-year period straight away by showing a competitor's status."

Typical skillset desired: Top grades from a well-ranked university; a business or comparable professional degree, or relevant years of work experience; MBAs preferred.

While internal and external auditor roles differ in terms of who they report to, the overall objective is the same: Ensuring that companies are operating at peak potential by monitoring company-wide compliance, safety guidelines, and safety standards. For corporations with a lot of branch offices, achieving this goal means many miles on the road and in the air.

3. Corporate Recruiter

The Points Guy himself began his career recruiting for financial firm Morgan Stanley, logging thousands of travel miles and millions of points each year flying across the nation to host networking events. You may be required to utilize the firm's internal booking agent or a corporate credit card for booking travel. However, most will still allow you to add your own frequent flyer number and known traveler number for TSA Precheck. So you might not be able to rack up 500,000 points in spend per year, but you will earn credit (and status) for every mile you travel.

Typical skillset desired: Strong people-facing skills; a communications- or business-related degree, or relevant years of work experience.

4. National Sales

Sales is an industry where meeting face-to-face will always hold value. Not only will you develop valuable career skills in this field, you could very well end up traveling to a region over and over again as part of your sales territory, or criss-crossing the country or even the globe to meet your clients.

Tip: Tech start-ups are always hiring for talented sales people... and many newer companies don't have established travel policies. So if you can prove a strong case for you to travel out to a client, you most likely will be able to book the trip on your own card, and submit an expense report for reimbursement later.

5. Corporate Event Planner

Corporate event planners often fly out several times a month to monitor company-sponsored functions on-location. Depending on the company or agency you work for, you may be able to charge corporate expenses to your personal card for later reimbursement.

Typical skillset desired: Strong people-facing skills; ability to handle constant change and various decision-makers; organizational and time management skills.

6. Military or Civil Service

A number of TPG Lounge readers shared their travel opportunities with the military: "I've seen most of Europe, Africa, Caribbean and Asia with the Army", said Payem A.

Even if you aren't deployed overseas, you can still maximize your earning opportunities within official travel guidelines. Nine-year veteran naval officer and TPG contributor Richard Kerr published an extremely comprehensive guide of regulations for government travel in September 2017.

Typical skillset desired: Passion; commitment; patriotism.

7. Travel Agent or Tour Operator

The sky is the limit for creative careers within the global tourism industry, which is worth over $7.6 trillion USD as of 2016 , and opportunities have skyrocketed in recent years.

Bespoke travel is one such recent niche, where travelers looking for something a little off the beaten path can turn to small-scale travel agents , who compile arrival-to-departure itineraries filled with unique experiences custom-tailored to the client's interests . Destination yoga retreats are rising in popularity, while motorsport fanatics pay top dollar for VIP experiences at the Monaco Grand Prix or race supercars through the Icelandic Highlands . Some expats have found ways to fund their overseas lifestyles by introducing local culture to visiting tourists over half-day foodie tours .

Within the TPG Lounge, we've even found a number of travel agents who focus on finding great award flights for busy travelers.

"I love helping people book their award flights. I have some clients who pay a small monthly fee or yearly fee who do a lot of points travel, and I have others who don't travel as frequently, but still like to use points for travel. I charge a per trip booking fee." – Dallin H.

Typical skillset desired: Proficiency with travel booking tools and software; creativity in planning unique travel experiences; ability to resolve last-minute changes and emergencies; fluency in one or more foreign languages.

The following jobs may not as readily present themselves as mileage-earning opportunities, but some careful planning can easily result in thousands of miles.

1. Digital Nomad

"Learn coding and become a 'digital nomad'. You can check out r/digitalnomad on Reddit. Accommodation — hotels and apartments — is much cheaper in much of the world, so not only can you travel the world, but you can also spend less money." – Anthony L.

A number of websites connect digital nomads with companies seeking to hire. Check out Facebook groups for remote jobs , or websites RemoteJobs.com , Remote.co , We Work Remotely in addition to the usual job sites such as Monster or Indeed .

Since living abroad has both advantages as well as drawbacks, make sure to research expat award travel best practices in order to maximize your points and miles strategy.

Typical skillset desired: Expertise in an online field such as programming, SEO/AdWords, or social media marketing

2. Researcher

If you make it through the grind of earning your Ph.D, there could be a significant amount of travel in your future. Academic, scientific, and medical researchers often find themselves circling the globe to promote or pursue their work, while archaeologists travel to dig sites around the world.

Some 70,000 additional travel-related jobs — in places such as hotels, travel agencies, airports and museums — were created in the U.S. in 2016, according to Skift, a travel industry research firm. Federal projections show the leisure and hospitality sector continuing to expand modestly in the years ahead.

One option is an unusual program from the giant retailer Amazon that recruits workers to help handle seasonal peaks in fulfillment center demand from nearby camp grounds. Amazon CamperForce pays up to $11.50 an hour, with time and a half for overtime. Benefits include paid campsite fees and a completion bonus. Be aware that working in an Amazon fulfillment facility can be noisy, difficult work. Expect a lot of lifting and time on your feet.

Qualifications: Past experience in this type of work helps. Expect on-the-job training if necessary. Go to the Workamper site to track down jobs on its bulletin board. Many campgrounds post jobs on their own sites; have a look, too, at CoolWorks .

4. Tour guide

The nitty-gritty: If you're a history buff, or a born educator, this might fit you to a T. You need to be at ease talking to groups of tourists and have your facts and anecdotes at the ready. You might lead visitors through points of historical interest in your hometown or give personal tours of, say, a local winery or pretzel factory.

Pay range: Typically $9.04 to $20.52 per hour, according to PayScale .

Qualifications: The most in-demand skill is a knack for captivating an audience. Employers might require you to pass a written exam of knowledge of specific locations and city history. Some community colleges offer short-term courses in tour- and travel-related occupations. The certified tour professional certification is offered through the National Tour Association .

Think, too, about the not-for-profit Road Scholar program , which offers 5,500 "learning adventures" in 150 countries and all 50 states. If you become an "ambassador" for the program, you promote it through speaking engagements. Your compensation is credits toward participation in those adventures.

5. Peace Corps

The nitty-gritty: This is not your usual travel industry job, but consider the experience of San Francisco resident Barbara Jue, 68, who served in the former Soviet republic of Moldova for two years. As a small-enterprise development adviser, she lent her know-how to a nongovernmental agency that focused on developing small businesses in the country.

"Peace Corps was an aspiration since I was a teenager in the '60s when I was drawn to JFK's vision," Jue says. After she retired as director of global compensation at the Clorox Company, the time seemed right. "If you can help make a difference, you have a more fulfilling life, right?"

She cautions that the Peace Corps is not for everyone: "Because Moldova is a developing country, health, sanitation and language, for me, were challenging, but you learn to be adaptable and flexible," Jue says.

The bottom line is that the Peace Corps wants to enlist older volunteers like Jue. At present, nearly 500 volunteers older than 50 are serving in countries around the world. A few are in their 80s.

The current push for older volunteers dates to 2011, when the Peace Corps began working with AARP to connect with older volunteers for its Peace Corps Response program , which sends experienced professionals abroad. The program may have special appeal to older people because it requires a shorter time commitment: three months to a year instead of the traditional 27 months. Married couples may serve together, but each person must apply and qualify as a volunteer separately.

Pay range: There is no salary per se, but all volunteers receive comprehensive medical and dental benefits during service. Financial benefits include paid travel to and from the country of service, housing and living expenses, vacation days and a readjustment allowance upon completion of service that can amount to thousands of dollars.

Qualifications: For Peace Corps Response, you must be a U.S. citizen and one of the following: an experienced professional, a returned volunteer, or a licensed physician or nurse.

17 Things Airlines Are Not Required to Compensate You For

While airlines in the U.S. and abroad must uphold certain service standards and follow industry regulations, they are not legally responsible for every mishap or inconvenience that occurs before, during, or after your flight. Here are 17 surprising instances in which airlines aren’t obligated to offer compensation to passengers.

Delays or Cancellations

The National Security Law Firm states, “In the United States, airlines are not required to compensate passengers when flights are canceled or delayed.” Even when traveling through Europe, airlines will only compensate you for significant delays that aren’t the result of events beyond their control.

Emotional Distress

Travel delays can be beyond stressful—especially if you have a medical condition or vital appointment or are traveling with young children. Unfortunately, the emotional distress you suffer due to flight delays, cancellations, or turbulence isn’t the airline’s responsibility, although many offer extra physical assistance to those in genuine need.

Missed Flights Due to Personal Reasons

No matter how important, unfair, or heartbreaking they may be, your personal problems are not the airline’s responsibility, even if you’re unavoidably detained from boarding. They certainly aren’t required to take action should you oversleep, get stuck in traffic, or get the time wrong! You’ll have to pay a fee to rebook or purchase tickets for an entirely new flight.

Inconvenience Due to Flight Changes

Flight changes may be frustrating and potentially disruptive to your other travel plans, but the airline is only obligated to inform you within a certain timeframe. The flight provider doesn’t have to compensate you for missed connections, disrupted travel plans, or additional expenses due to the alteration , so long as they give you at least 14 days’ notice.

The Total Value of Damaged Hold Luggage

While airlines are liable for damage to checked luggage, the amount of compensation you receive is capped and often limited by the carrier’s specific policies. If the quality or condition of your luggage is to blame, you might not get anything. Even if it is the airline’s fault, you’re unlikely to be reimbursed entirely, especially for high-value items like professional cameras.

Discomfort on Board

Airlines are not obligated to compensate their customers for an uncomfortable or inconvenient flight experience. Although noisy passengers, cramped seating, or inadequate food and drink service can be frustrating and annoying, don’t expect any type of refund. They may offer coupons or apologies if you report your disapproval, but they aren’t legally bound to do so.

Refreshments During Delays

The U.S. Department of Transportation reveals that American airlines are only required to offer food or drink after a tarmac delay exceeding two hours. Unless the delay falls under extraordinary circumstances or exceeds this threshold, you must purchase refreshments yourself or remain hungry/thirsty!

Items in Lost Checked Bags

Airlines are required by law to locate and return lost checked baggage, but compensation for lost items within the bag might not be covered (or might be capped). They are also not bound by any timeframe, so replacing the item early out of necessity won’t be a compensable expense either. For high-value items, always purchase separate, specific insurance.

Missed Work

While missing work due to flight disruptions can be frustrating, airlines are not obligated to compensate passengers for lost wages or missed opportunities arising from such situations. It simply wouldn’t be feasible to do so, according to AirHelp . In rare circumstances, flight delays over three hours warrant compensation, but not for lost earnings.

Medical Expenses Due to Normal Flying Discomfort

Suppose you experience minor discomfort during the flight, such as ear aches, motion sickness, or headaches. In that case, this isn’t the airline’s responsibility—no matter how bumpy the flight or landing! However, many cabin staff will offer things like lozenges, vomit bags, free water, or pillows to help passengers who are suffering while onboard.

Missed Pre-Booked Services

If your flight is delayed or canceled, you may miss pre-booked, pre-paid services like airport lounges, quick passes, or specific in-flight meals. While the service is often transferred to a later flight or rebooking, the airline is not obligated to provide a refund or offer any compensation if such services cannot be provided.

Seat Class Demotion

Even if you’re involuntarily downgraded from your purchased seat class due to operational reasons, the airline isn’t obligated to compensate you for the additional discomfort and disappointment. Most airlines will automatically refund you the price difference, but don’t expect to receive extra cash for the inconvenience, even if it’s a special occasion like a honeymoon.

Missed Connections Due to Weather

According to Travel + Leisure , airlines are only obliged to compensate you for a missed connection if the reason for your late arrival was within their control. This does not include missed connections for things like unforeseen weather conditions or strike actions. However, they’re often required to rebook you on the next available flight or offer an alternative route.

Missed Flight Due to Late Arrival

Even if you arrive late at the airport through no fault of your own, the airline isn’t responsible, and you may not even be liable for any type of refund. Unnaturally high traffic volumes, late trains or buses, road work, or parking delays aren’t the airline’s problem, so don’t expect any compensation for missed flights due to these reasons.

Incorrect Special Meals

If you pre-order a special meal (like vegetarian, halal, or diabetic) and it is not available on board or is delivered to the wrong passenger, the airline isn’t obligated to compensate you unless you paid extra for it. They may offer an apology or a replacement meal (which may not suit your needs), but they’re not legally required to provide a certain type of meal.

Missed Connecting Flights Due to Immigration

The airline has no control over the immigration procedure that is enforced at border crossings, so they won’t compensate you if you missed a connecting flight because you were stuck in an immigration line. Make your situation known to airport staff, who might offer to fast-track you. If that fails, your airline will help to rebook you on the next available flight.

Lost or Damaged Mobility Aids

Airline staff are legally required to handle mobility aids (wheelchairs, canes, etc.) with care, but the airline isn’t liable for the cost of a brand-new replacement should any damage or loss occur. You may be entitled to partial compensation (depending on the item’s condition) or nothing if the damage was caused by previous wear and tear or insufficient protection.

Dogs will soon be able to experience their own “ fur st” class flight with the launch of the world’s first jet charter company specifically designed for man’s best friend. 

BARK, the dog toy company that coordinates the popular treat subscription BarkBox, is partnering with a jet charter service to take away the challenges of long-distance traveling with dogs, according to a press release. BARK Air, as the company calls it, offers the “white glove experience typical of a human’s first-class experience and redirected all that pampering to pooches.”

Taking dogs on airplanes is, typically, a stressful endeavor with different airlines having different policies for pet travel. For example, American Airlines allows small dogs in a carrier to be placed under the seat in front, but larger dogs are put in the cargo space, which has been found to be stressful for the pet. For United Airlines , pets can fly in the cabin if there’s enough space, but they must fit in a carrier under the seat in front.

“We are excited to take the insights we’ve learned over years to create an experience that is truly dog-first, which is drastically different from just accepting dogs – from the ground to the skies,” said Matt Meeker, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer at BARK, in a statement.

However, you’ll need to pay a hefty fee for the dog-friendly flight. For now, a ticket for just one dog and one human will run you at least $6,000 one way. 

The first BARK Air flights will take off on May 23, and so far, there are only two flight routes available, both from New York’s Westchester County Airport. From New York to London’s Stansted Airport, it’ll cost $8,000 one-way and to Los Angeles’s Van Nuys Airport will cost $6,000 one-way. Tickets are available for purchase on April 11.

Not only does BARK Air allow dogs, it also focuses on the furry friends by treating them like VIPs, the press release said. BARK Air passengers can skip TSA checkpoints and screenings and instead experience a simple check-in process where they can meet the other dogs on the flight and the humans are served a meal cooked by on-site chefs. 

When boarding, a BARK Air concierge is on-hand to ensure the dogs are socializing and adjusting to the environment well. 

Each flight will undergo “Dogs Fly First” flight prep that includes “calming pheromones, music, and colors that pups prefer.” To make the flying experience easier and more enjoyable, dogs have access to various aids such as calming treats, noise-canceling ear muffs, and calming jackets.

During takeoff and descent, dogs are given a beverage of their choice to help their ears adjust to cabin pressurization. Of course, there will be plenty of treats on the flight.

Flying With Dogs or Cats? These Are Airlines’ Pet Policies

American recently relaxed its rules for pets traveling inside the cabin with their owners. Here’s what the major U.S. airlines require to travel with a pet.

Flying with a pet can be expensive and confusing, with fees, weight limits, carrier size rules and the need to make sure there’s no loud barking (or meowing) on board.

Recently, American Airlines relaxed its pet policy to allow passengers to bring a carry-on bag in addition to a pet in a carrier, and more private flight options have been emerging in recent years for pet owners who can afford them.

Still, flying with large or medium-size dogs can be tricky, and many travelers are wary of leaving a pet in the plane’s cargo hold.

For those traveling on the major carriers with their pets as carry-ons, here’s what to know about each major domestic airline’s policy.

Southwest Airlines

On Southwest, a Dallas-based carrier, two checked bags can fly at no cost, but not pets. Southwest charges $125 per pet carrier on its flights.

Dogs or cats are allowed to travel below a seat in an approved carrier — up to 18.5 inches long by 8.5 inches high and 13.5 inches wide — according to the airline .

Southwest has a few caveats for those traveling with pets: The pet must stay in its carrier during the flight, and the carrier is considered a personal item or carry-on bag.

Up to six pets are allowed on Southwest flights. Once six pets are booked onto a flight, no further customers may add a pet companion to their booking.

United Airlines

United Airlines has no weight or breed restrictions for cats and dogs as long as they are in an approved hard or soft-sided carrier, measuring 17.5 inches long by 9 inches tall and 12 inches wide for a hard carrier, or 18 inches long by 11 inches tall and 11 inches wide for a soft carrier.

United charges $125 each way for travel with pets. There is no fee for service animals on United flights, but some forms are required before the flight.

The carrier must fit under a seat, and where a passenger is allowed to sit can vary according to the type of aircraft. For example, people traveling with pets cannot sit in emergency rows. If you’re traveling with two pets (the maximum allotted), you are required to book two seats.

Delta Air Lines

Small dogs and cats can travel on Delta Air Lines flights as long as they can fit inside a carrier stored below the seat. The size of the carrier depends on the aircraft, but in general the airline recommends a soft-sided carrier no larger than 18 inches long by 11 inches tall and 11 inches wide.

Your pet must be at least 8 weeks old and small enough to have some room to move around in the carrier, which must have ventilation openings on three sides.

Delta charges $95 for pets traveling as carry-on companions, and the passenger can bring only one personal item along with the pet. Certain seats cannot be booked for travel with an animal, such as those in an emergency exit row.

American Airlines

American Airlines allows cats and dogs to travel in a carry-on container, which must remain under the seat in front of the pet owner throughout the flight. The airline recommends a soft-sided carrier that measures 18 inches long by 11 inches tall and 11 inches wide.

The fee for a carry-on pet on a domestic American Airlines flight is $150.

Flights are limited to seven carry-on pets, not including service animals, and American Eagle flights are limited to five carry-on pets, with one in first class. There is no charge for service animals flying on American flight, but the airline requires forms to be filled out in advance.

The airline said in a statement that it had recently changed its cabin pet policy to allow customers with a pet to also bring either a personal item or carry-on bag stowed in the overhead bin (but not both).

“We made the change to provide a more convenient and comfortable experience to customers whose pets fly American,” the airline said.

Spirit, JetBlue, Frontier and Alaska

Spirit allows dogs and cats on its flights in a carrier no larger than 18 inches long by 14 inches wide and 9 inches tall for a fee of $125. The weight of the pet and the carrier cannot exceed 40 pounds, according to the airline .

Small dogs and cats can fly on JetBlue for fee of $125 each way , in an approved carrier. Up to six pets are allowed on JetBlue flights.

Frontier allows pets on board for a $99 fee each way, as long the pet fits in a carrier. Passengers can have only a personal item or carry-on in addition to their pet carrier.

Pets can travel in a carrier on Alaska Airlines flights for a fee of $100 each way. A passenger can travel with a pet carrier and a personal item, or a carrier and a carry-on bag.

Private or charter flights

Those who take their pets on private or charter flights, which can cost many thousands of dollars, have much more leeway. Dogs that weigh less than 150 pounds can sit on seats.

BarkAir, a charter operator tailored specifically for those flying with dogs, charges about $6,000 for a dog and its owner to travel, with flights between New York and Los Angeles and New York and London. Carriers are not required, and dogs can sit on laps, seats or beds.

These 15 states will now investigate complaints about airline service under new Biden agreement

The Biden administration is enlisting the help of officials in 15 states to enforce consumer-protection laws covering airline travelers, a power that by law is limited to the federal government.

The U.S. Department of Transportation said Tuesday that the states, which include California, New York and Illinois, will help ensure that government enforcement activities keep up with a current boom in air travel.

Under an agreement announced by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, state attorney general offices will be able to investigate complaints about airline service. If they believe an airline violated the law or is refusing to cooperate with investigators, the states could refer cases to the Transportation Department for enforcement.

In return, the Transportation Department, or DOT, will give the states access to its consumer-complaint system and train state employees about federal consumer laws covering airlines.

“This is a partnership that will greatly improve DOT's capacity to hold airlines accountable and to protect passengers,” Buttigieg told reporters.

Buttigieg pointed to travelers whose flights are canceled and then must wait days for another flight or pay more to fly home on another airline. “Things like that are a violation of passenger rights, and we are seeing far too many cases of that,” he said.

The states and territories whose officials signed the “memorandum of understanding” with the Transportation Department are:

• Connecticut
• New Hampshire
• North Carolina
• Pennsylvania
• Rhode Island
• District of Columbia
• Northern Mariana Islands
• U.S. Virgin Islands

Buttigieg, a Democrat, repeatedly cast the agreement as bipartisan, but only two of the state officials who signed on are Republicans. Buttigieg indicated his department hopes to recruit more states.

Under U.S. law, the federal government alone regulates consumer-protection laws covering airlines. The carriers are not legally required to respond to state investigations.

Consumer advocates have pushed to expand enforcement power to the states. However, both the full House and a key Senate committee declined to include that proposal in pending legislation that covers the Federal Aviation Administration, part of the Transportation Department.

“During the pandemic, we actually got more complaints about airline traffic than any other topic, and it was frustrating” because the state had no authority to investigate the complaints, Colorado Attorney General Philip Weiser said.

Weiser argued that Congress should give states power to enforce airline consumer-protection laws, “but I have to say, we didn't wait for Congress to act.”

Consumer groups praised the agreement while saying they would rather see Congress write into law the power of states to regulate consumer-protection rules.

“This is the next best thing," said William McGee, an aviation expert at the American Economic Liberties Project, which opposes industry consolidation. “We don’t look at this as a threat to DOT’s authority. We look at it as the states assisting DOT, which doesn’t have the staffing to handle all the complaints they get.”

Airlines for America, a trade group representing the largest U.S. carriers, said it works with state and national groups “to constantly improve the customer experience for all passengers. We appreciate the role of state attorneys general and their work on behalf of consumers, and we look forward to continue working with them."

The Emirates President's honest assessment of the situation after Tuesday's record rainfall in Dubai indicates that the airline is determined to be better prepared for similar events in the future.

Dubai’s flagship carrier Emirates has had to cancel nearly 400 flights and delay many more in the 3 days following Tuesday’s thunderstorm, Emirates President Tim Clark wrote in an open letter to customers on Saturday.

Extending an apology to all affected, Clark wrote, “We know our response has been far from perfect. We acknowledge and understand the frustration of our customers due to the congestion, lack of information, and confusion in the terminals. We acknowledge that the long queues and wait times have been unacceptable.”

He assured travelers that the airline is committed to learning from this experience to “make things right and improve future processes.”

The UAE experienced its heaviest rainfall in 75 years on Tuesday, halting operations across the country. In Dubai, over 1,200 flights were canceled and 40 were diverted.

The adverse weather conditions significantly impacted operations at Emirates.

“To free up resources and capacity to manage impacted customers as a priority, we had to suspend check-in for passengers departing Dubai, implement an embargo on ticket sales, and temporarily halt connecting passenger traffic from points across our network coming into Dubai,” Clark wrote.

Flight Schedules Restored

As of Saturday morning, while regular flight schedules have been restored, the Emirates chief said the airline would take a few more days to clear the backlog of rebooked passengers and bags.

Clark acknowledged the difficulties faced by customers, pilots, cabin crew, and airport employees in reaching the airport due to flooded roads and logistical challenges.

As a result, staffing shortages and difficulties in transporting essential supplies such as meals and flight amenities hindered operations.

Talking about the present situation, Clark wrote, “Passengers previously stranded in the airport transit area have been rebooked and are enroute to their destinations. We have put together a taskforce to sort, reconcile, and deliver some 30,000 pieces of left-behind baggage to their owners.”

 On Friday, Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai International Airport said the hub is “100% operational.”

Indian Advisory on Travel to Dubai

The Indian embassy in the UAE on Friday has advised inbound Indian passengers travelling to or transiting through Dubai International Airport to reschedule their travel operations.

“Inbound Indian passengers travelling to or transiting through Dubai International Airport are advised to reschedule non-essential travel till operations normalise,” the advisory read.

Dubai International Airport has temporarily restricted the number of inbound flights following the flash floods.

“In adherence to the instructions issued by Dubai Airport Authority, we have adjusted our flight operations to and from Dubai to continue with the maximum permissible reduced capacity of 50% of our schedule,” an Air India Express spokesperson said in a statement.

Air India in a statement informed about the cancellation of its flights to and from Dubai due to continued operational disruptions at Dubai Airport. “Customers booked on our flights with valid tickets for travel till 21st April 2024 will be offered a one-time waiver on rescheduling and full refunds for cancellation,” an Air India spokesperson said.

IndiGo too has cancelled some of its flights to Dubai.
