yellowcard tour review

Show Review: Yellowcard offers a throwback to the past and a glimpse of the future on Ocean Avenue anniversary tour

In the words of Derek Sanders, emo music is alive and well in the year 2023 and all our favorite bands pulled together an epic lineup on Saturday night. Yellowcard’s reunion tour turned Ocean Avenue anniversary sold out Arizona Financial Theatre, filling Phoenix with nostalgia alongside a peek into the future.

Anberlin started things off with a wash of red haze and a setlist perfectly curated for the energy of the evening. The crowd warmed up with “Godspeed” and “Lacerate” as the band paced the edge of the stage to rile up the room. The closer of “Feel Good Drag” took everyone right back to 2005- the perfect opener for the rest of the lineup.

Florida natives Mayday Parade have also been on this touring circuit for decades now and provided the direct support for their old friends in Yellowcard. Singer Derek Sanders emerged under a spotlight to the first notes of “Oh Well, Oh Well” before the full band kicked in with their wall of sound. Sanders whipped his hair, guitarists Brooks Betts and Alex Garcia tossed their guitars and the audience responded to this display by nearly drowning them out with their own singing.

Like Yellowcard, Mayday Parade has toured extensively on their past work, but recently released new music to debut on this tour. It was the classics, however, that got the people up off their feet- the band knows their audience very well and made sure to close out their sprint of a set with “Jersey” and “Jamie All Over”. We’ve heard the songs a million times but they truly never get old.

It’s been a long six years since Yellowcard played what they thought would be their final show, but the band took the stage like no time had passed. From their triumphant return at Riot Fest in 2022, this tour was the beginning of a victory lap and what can safely be called an official return to the scene. Arizona welcomed them with open arms as they brought us right back to that place off Ocean Avenue with “Way Away” and “Breathing”.

This tour is the commemoration of 20 years of the iconic Ocean Avenue album, but the band drew from every section of their catalog, pulling out some deep cuts and fan favorites like “One Year, Six Months” and “Fighting”. Alongside Mayday Parade, Yellowcard also released new music this year, debuting “Childhood Eyes” from their first endeavor back as a band.

Singer Ryan Key took several opportunities between songs to express his gratitude for his bandmates, the fans and everyone who allowed the band to reunite with such success. Arizona Financial Theatre was awash in colorful lights, familiar sounds and a wave of thankful emotions- especially for everyone seeing Yellowcard for the first time that night.

The band took us “Back Home” before returning to the stage for an epic encore that included a rafter-raising sing-along to “Only One” before burning the place down to the title track “Ocean Avenue”.

Key dropped a not so secret tidbit that the band is already planning for 2024 and beyond, drawing huge cheers from a fanbase that’s thrilled to have them back. We’ll get the stage ready for their return and keep them in the big venues they’ve humbly requested we not take away- the next tour will be a look into the future for our throwback favorites.

LIVE REVIEW: Yellowcard, Mayday Parade, Story of the Year, This Wild Life in Boston, MA (07.09.23)

Last night something special made its way to MGM Fenway, my new favorite personal venue in the city, and it’s been a long time coming. The iconic Yellowcard performed their first show in Boston since 2016 on their farewell tour. And they currently find themselves on the 20th-anniversary tour of Ocean Avenue. Easily the biggest audience the band has headlined in Boston, and one vocalist Ryan Key commented on. Saying Key, “We stopped being a band because we couldn’t fill that room across the street,” seemingly about the House of Blues. For non-Mass residents, it is just down the street and half the capacity of MGM. A room that Yellowcard sold out practically instantly when tickets went on sale for this run. And along with them for the ride were bands that are no strangers to spending some time in the band’s company in one way or another.

Be it Key mentioning that the band and Story of the Year both were competing at the same time with their “Avenue” albums (referencing Story of the Year’s debut album, Page Avenue ). Or Ryan Key talking about his time touring as a solo artist, which included an opening slot for main support on Mayday Parade ‘s 2018 headline run. And of course, one can’t forget the longtime act in This Wild Life , who has been a longtime Warped tour fixture and touring mate of both of the last mentioned bands in the past. After all, the Warped Tour community, if anything, has kept the ethos of supporting and playing with friends who are just as supportive of you. And that idea was evident throughout the night.

But before one gets ahead of ourselves, the night was a four-band bill that kicked off just before seven pm with Long Beach, California’s This Wild Life . The band found themselves here just about a year ago,  at yet another new venue that came to life in Covid at Crystal Ballroom in Somerville. And the love for the band was clear in the crowd. I walked into the room to the tunes of a long-time hit for the band, “Concrete,” with a rock and roll energy that made for an electric start to my evening. Working with limited space, considering the number of bands still coming in the evening, the duo quickly transitioned to “Headfirst.” As well as a great instrumental jam between founding members Kevin Jordan and Anthony Del Grosso , the band, as it became a theme throughout the night, announced that they would be back in November for a headline tour. And they sweetly finished the set by Jordan introducing the band as “your budget Blink 182 aka This Wild Life”. The band, in full, performed a short but well-suited kickoff of the night to come.

Next up was a band that has been a stranger to Boston for a long time, St. Louis, Missouri’s Story of the Year . We’re talking about 19 years, according to vocalist Dan Marsala . Marsala spoke about how the last time they played Boston was at the House of Blues, and it was the same night that the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004 right across the street. Said Marsala, “They were playing the St. Louis Cardinals. We definitely got booed that night.” But despite the band not playing a show since then until last Sunday night, you definitely couldn’t tell it from the crowd. From the second the lights went down, Story of the Year rocked their way through the set with huge crowd roars. Starting it out with a brand new track, “Tear Me to Pieces,” within the crowd, the first mosh pit of the night immediately came to life, and it didn’t stop once throughout the jam-packed set. Playing both old and new, the crowd was singing along no matter what.  “The Antidote” had a beautiful pivot of some slower moments but then culminated in a more ‘loving pit’ where those in the audience could be seen singing the lyrics to their friends. Or huge roars when it came to one of the bands’ earliest tracks, “Anthem of Our Dying Day.”    The set slapped throughout and brought me back to the early days of Warped beautifully.

Ending the set on the perfect note with the anthemic, “Until the Day I Die,” the band exited with the mention of them returning in January, which set off the crowd.  A particularly sweet moment of guitarist Ryan Phillips making a conscientious effort to pick up every set list and comically throw the set lists over his shoulder or from under his legs endeared the crowd even more. It was a tremendous Warped worthy performance from a long-loved band in Boston.

Next up was no stranger to Boston with Tallahassee’s Mayday Parade . Starting with “Oh Well, Oh Well ,”  Mayday Parade crushed a 40-minute set filled with all the hits. But as well as the hits, the band’s second song was a recently released new track, “More Like A Crash .” The reaction to the song wasn’t lost on the emotional frontman Derek Sanders . Sanders said, “To look out and see you singing along to a brand new song makes me very happy.”

But while the new music went over well with the crowd, the band at this point propelled into the vibes fans have fallen over for head over heels when it comes to Mayday Parade. Be it “Anywhere But Here,” Sanders prefaced the next track, “Miserable At Best,” by saying, “Emo music is alive and well. 2023, you know what I’m saying.” The resurgence of “emo music” is clear this year, and the successful transformation of festivals like When We Were Young, and Transplant has made that something true. And we’re for here it. With “Miserable At Best , ” the crowd was treated to a piano performance by Sanders and drummer Jake Bundrick which had everyone in the room in tune in silence. This was great to see, considering concert etiquette is something we haven’t always seen in the best form lately. But concert etiquette in 2023 last night wasn’t an issue because the room was filled with “elder emo’s.” I wouldn’t doubt it if anyone in the room was younger than their late twenties. Collectively a crowd of people knew what pre-pandemic life was like when it came to shows and made for a magnificent night of live music.

As the band dropped into the last few tracks off their set, another new one, only about a week old this time, with “Got Me All Wrong , ” the crowd indeed went off. The band concluded their set in the only way we know how they finished off their main support performance with “Jersey” and “Jamie All Over , ” back to back. There’s a reason why Mayday Parade has continued to be one of the lasting acts from the Warped Era and the crowd was all over it.

And the night was not over yet as just about thirty minutes after Mayday Parade vacated the stage, Yellowcard vocalist Ryan Key led his team of boys on stage to the audience’s glee. Being the band’s first show in Boston since their farewell tour in 2016 at House of Blues, as previously mentioned, the crowd went off as the band quickly burst through a powerful hits parade. Back-to-back renditions of “Way Away,” “Breathing,” “Lights and Sounds,” and “Believe” had the crowd going insane and all before the band even said one word to the crowd. And from the crowd’s reaction, that was perfectly fine with those in attendance. Continuing into “Rough Landing, Holly,” Key chose this time to say a hypothetical, “Is anyone having a good time or what?” At this point, the show slowed as Key broke down the history with each tour opener. Be it the previously mentioned “war of the avenues” or his time as a solo artist traveling in a van again opening for  Mayday Parade.

His banter was on point with the crowd and his bandmates on stage. Even bringing up the “elder emo’s” when saying, “The elder emo’s up front are getting their asses kicked.” This was just before breaking into “One Year, 6 Months”   and jumping into “Hang You Up” off their album When You’re Through Thinking, Say Yes ,  (2011). For this one, Key brought out Derek Sanders of Mayday to the stage for a duet moment, with Sanders sweetly saying after, “Give it up for Yellowcard, Boston!” Immediately, on violin, Sean Mackin said, “And if you don’t mind, make some noise for our fearless leader, Ryan Key!” The camaraderie and love for all involved continued with Key saying, “One of the best things about this tour is that I get 31 hugs from Derek Sanders”.

The positive energy never let up throughout the set as it had been the whole night, with the band quickly bursting into “Empty Apartment.” This came before playing the debut single off their first release since 2016 with “Childhood Eyes.” The title track off the new EP smashed it with the crowd, and the EP drops on July 21st, so keep your eyes peeled for that. The love and evident appreciation from the band flowed out throughout the set, be it Key saying, “We put out thirteen songs that changed our lives forever.” This and talking about the album’s producer, Neal Avron. Avron was in attendance that evening and proudly took in the show from the row in front of me. It was also complimented by the guys in This Wild Life going off for each song from outside the backstage door. The impact Yellowcard has had and still has is evident, and hopefully, they will continue to make their presence known as the emo revival comes on strong in 2023.

As the set started closing, the band ended their regular set on “Back Home” before quickly returning to the stage for the encore. The encore was kicked off with “With You Around” before quickly propelling into unquestionably two of the band’s biggest tracks with a gorgeous rendition of “Only One.” The track was before the one and only “Ocean Avenue.” With Key saying at the end before breaking into the track that made Yellowcard a household name, “This is the biggest tour we’ve ever done in our entire careers,” the crowd swooned. Only being about a week into this run and a sneaky little return back to Mass at the Worcester Palladium in just over a month near the end of the tour, Yellowcard still shows how well-loved and how much love they still have for each other overall these years. The lineup was perfectly curated, and who knows, maybe I may have to make that trek down to Worcester to see the lineup in a truly Warped fashion.

Interview: Yellowcard’s William Ryan Key On Return, Tour And EP

  • July 21, 2023

Pop-punk giants Yellowcard return with their first collection of new songs in seven years, as they release their new EP Childhood Eyes. It’s an unexpected comeback from a band that felt like it wrapped up with a nice, neat bow in 2016.

But one performance can change everything. And as vocalist William Ryan Key describes, that’s exactly what happened last fall at Riot Fest. But as unexpected as the return might have been, the reception to Yellowcard’s newest chapter is arguably more stunning.

Packed amphitheaters filled with energized fans have greeted Yellowcard on their tour over the past few weeks. It appears to have even caught  its four members off guard, who were playing to (still impressive) crowds of about 1,000 people during their final years. Key talks about that feeling while dishing out stories from how the new music and comeback came together.

How has it felt being back on tour?

I wish I could put it into words. It’s the biggest tour we’ve ever done in our entire careers. And to be doing that over 20 years in, there’s not really any rational explanation for it… In some cities we are playing venues that are literally five or six times the size of venues we would have played in, say, 2013 or ’14. And we are selling these venues out. So we are all kind of suspended in this out of body sort of sense of disbelief I think.

You’ve said you thought Yellowcard was done in 2016. What changed?

A part of doing this this late in life is you are trying to make a living. You are trying to provide for your family. It’s one of the reasons we stepped away for, what we thought was for good. Year after year, it was harder to have the level of success that made it worth being away from home for seven, eight months out of the year… In 2021 when the phone call came in about playing Riot Fest; the honest answer is why we took the call was the guarantee to play was so high that we couldn’t believe it.

And then it snowballed from there?

That started a conversation. And as soon as we confirmed we were going to play Riot Fest in 2022, I think Live Nation could smell blood. And they put together this tour that we are on now. We didn’t know at the time, but the fanbase was going to potentially be ignited in such a massive way. And with it also being the 20 th anniversary of Ocean Avenue’s release, it was the perfect time for Live Nation to dangle the carrot in front of us. Once we played Riot Fest, everything was fire on all cylinders. We wanted to make some new music, which we hadn’t thought about before the show… You could tell that people were so excited to see us again. It was an open arm embrace back into the world of music.

Let’s talk about that new music. What’s it feel like to release your first album, in this case an EP, in seven years?

I think the nice thing about his EP is we have no expectations. We’re not chasing anything. We’re not trying to claw our way back to our former success. The way we are approaching things collectively is a no expectations attitude. We take it one day at a time. One show at a time. If it ends tomorrow… We will step away from it with, I think, a bigger sense of accomplishment and fulfilment this time. And if people are excited about new songs, it’s just icing on the cake… We aren’t hanging on if it is going to get played on the radio or get on a huge playlist. That’s not what’s important.

How does that attitude impact the music creation process?

I think if we keep operating on that wavelength and we go make more music and approach it in the same way, I think you are going to get really pure, core Yellowcard music from us. We just want the fanbase to be excited. I say this on stage; now that you have given us the opportunity to tour again and play at these amphitheaters you can’t take it away from us now (laughing). If we come back through in a few years you have to come back… We want to retain peoples’ attention and support and that’s going into our music.

How would you describe the new EP?

I think the music, the band itself on the EP very effortlessly captured a sound of Yellowcard’s pasts. It’s a tricky thing when you are doing that. You don’t want to be 43-year-olds sounding like 23-year-olds… The fact that we were able to stumble into the sonic direction the EP made was very cool and felt very natural. Honestly, it was almost a fun challenge for us because the last two full lengths albums we made, we had very much moved on from the pop-rock and pop-punk sound from Yellowcard just because that’s not where our hearts were at.

But this EP was different?

We were so focused on getting the fanbase excited. So how do we make a record we are pumped on, but is undeniably going to turn the true Yellowcard fans’ heads? But lyrically, I think I was able to stay more in the place of some of my songwriting of my later years… I definitely internalize much more… And turn it into song.

Is that what you did with the first single “Childhood Eyes”?

The single itself, it is a style of lyric writing that I use often in my career; turn the verse on its head in the chorus. You may be experiencing a hardship in the verse, but the chorus finds positivity. The song “Childhood Eyes,” I wanted to basically personify the music business and the industry and my experience in it… This toxic relationship, whatever you want it to be, that’s the “you” in the song. With the chorus, I try to turn back on myself, with all the negative energy in the world…And the chorus I wanted turn in a way to say “am I the only one who finds hope and positivity and following my dreams in this challenging space?” And that is the music industry.

There are plenty of great reasons to collab with Vic Fuentes (Pierce The Veil) and Chris Carrabba (Dashboard Confessional). But why did you choose those two to be on the album?

Vic and I were just texting because I just heard their new record and I was texting him telling him how good I thought it was.. And I said “hey by the way, we’ve been tossing around the idea of having guest vocals on the EP. If I send you the demos, would you be down?” And he got back to me and said “I want to do ‘Three Minutes More’.”

It sounds like you two have a good friendship. What about Chris?

Chris and I have developed a really good friendship and relationship through my time living in Nashville… So when I was venturing off into the wilderness as a solo artist, he was a huge resource for me to pick his brain. And he was always someone in my ear saying “I know Yellowcard is coming back”… So he is very happy to be saying “I told you so.”

What song is he on?

I had a song laying around that ended up going on the EP. It’s an older song I wrote in 2015, called “The Places We’ll Go”. So my vocals on that song, except for the first and the third verse, are actually vocals I tracked for myself in 2015 and they are just going on an album now… So I sent that demo to Chris… And said this song would just be gorgeous and super impactful to have your voice on it…The exposure we will get with these guys being so generous with their time, its invaluable.

The environment around the music scene has changed quite a bit with TikTok and the increase of scene solo artists since Yellowcard last released an album. How is navigating the promotional process going?

We have someone that works with the band, full-time on a salary that is running our social media campaigns. And she’s just so brilliant in the way she is able to stay in tune with what’s happening… It’s a fine line too. Like I mentioned earlier you don’t want to be writing songs in your forties that make you sound like you are in your twenties. You have to have that energy and it sounds authentic, or you will sound like you are forcing it I think… We have to walk a fine line of trends on social media that wouldn’t play well for who we are as people and the age we are now.

You were recently on a song with This Wild Life. How does it feel for you to work with bands that probably were inspired by Yellowcard to even start creating music in the first place?

I don’t think I ever got to a place in my head where I felt I was that person or we were that band… So when I’m working with someone like This Wild Life, I play Call of Duty with them. We are friends. They are huge Yellowcard fans and they joke about it all the time. But I’m just singing a song with my friends. I feel like most things are like that, whether its producing records with friends or doing guest vocals on a song, It really feels like I’m just being creative.

What is next for Yellowcard after the tour and EP?

The  nice thing about what’s next is we don’t know. I feel like this is the first version of the band since Ocean Avenue that isn’t chasing Ocean Avenue . We are celebrating it now… Conscious or subconscious, it’s just impossible to say we weren’t chasing that for so many years. Right now there is just an undeniable sense of optimism or happiness from as all… I do believe it is safe to say we are operating again as a band full time.

Even Yellowcard don't know why they're bigger now than ever

"This is, without question, the best chapter of the book so far," says the pop-punk band's frontman, Ryan Key.

Sydney Bucksbaum is a writer at Entertainment Weekly covering all things pop culture – but TV is her one true love. She currently lives in Los Angeles but grew up in Chicago so please don't make fun of her accent when it slips out.

yellowcard tour review

Not even Yellowcard know why they're bigger than ever now.

The four musicians behind "Ocean Avenue" — one of pop-punk's most enduring songs — broke up in 2016. Now, seven years later, they've just wrapped a comeback tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of their most beloved album, Ocean Avenue , as well as the release of a new EP, Childhood Eyes . During their trek through the country, the group played to the biggest crowds they've ever had — something that still floors them as they gear up for their set at the Las Vegas music festival When We Were Young later this month.

"I truly never believed I'd be doing anything with Yellowcard again," lead singer and guitarist Ryan Key tells EW. "We had all moved on, and Yellowcard was a closed book in our past, so to be having all these wild opportunities, it's a special time to be in the band. This is, without question, the best chapter of the book so far."

It all began (again) when former band members Key, Sean Mackin, Ryan Mendez, and Josh Portman got an invitation out of the blue to play Riot Fest in Chicago in September 2022. "That phone call came in and changed our lives forever," Key says, explaining that the offer included the fattest paycheck they'd ever been promised. "You don't want to talk about money, right? But that's what got us on the phone," he admits. "Some of us in the band hadn't spoken in six years at that point — no communication whatsoever."

Thanks to their booking agent's insistence — they had "worked too hard for too long" — and because the money was just too good to turn down — they agreed to the gig.

"If this is what it was like all along, we never would've broken up in the first place,'" Key says. "But maybe we would have. I know what I was like when I was 24 — not taking care of myself, just off the rails. I don't even know if I would be here if we had been as successful as we were this summer every year of our career."

For Key, sleeping all day, staying up all... niiii iight was just the tip of the iceberg in the band's earlier years. "Having this happen now when I'm in this more mindful, mature place in my life is the best thing that could have happened for me," he says. "Riot Fest was such a big success for us — the energy around it was so positive and exciting that we got into planning the tour really quickly after that."

It wasn't just the fans' response to their festival set that inspired them to reunite — it was also the discovery that they worked better now than before. "I don't think there's ever been a time where we all spent so much time together," Key says, reflecting on the group's Ocean Avenue 20th-anniversary tour, which kicked off in July and wrapped in August. "There wasn't a sense of individuality or needing to be away from it if you weren't on stage, which was very much the case [during] what we thought was the end of the band in the late 2010s."

So why is Yellowcard experiencing their greatest popularity ever, 20 years after becoming a household name? "I wish I had an answer," Key says. "I really don't. We are so baffled by the size and scope of what we're doing." He remembers in 2015 that they were struggling to fill a 900-capacity room in Detroit. During their 2023 summer tour they played for almost 7,000 in the city.

"People can give you all the different explanations: Fans are older and they're bringing their kids to the show, they have more disposable income, the pop-punk emo scene is having this resurgence, it was the 20th anniversary of Ocean Avenue ," Key says. "But that just doesn't translate to seven times the amount of people... When 'Ocean Avenue' was on the radio every five minutes in 2004, we weren't playing 6,000- to 7,000-seat amphitheaters, much less selling them out. It's surreal."

Key thinks the band owes at least some of its recent success to their mindset shift — they're finally at peace knowing they'll likely never have another "Ocean Avenue."

"We've spent the majority of our career — subconsciously for the most part, but it's impossible to deny — chasing 'Ocean Avenue' after 'Ocean Avenue,'" Key says. "You reach that mountaintop and then you start to come back down the other side, and you're always going to be trying to climb back up. This time, the sense of that, subconscious or otherwise, is completely absent. We are all just enjoying, sitting back, and watching it happen as opposed to being hyper-focused on, 'What if it slips away again?'"

And if it does? Key says they're not worried, and actually more open-minded and optimistic about their future than ever — new album or not, When We Were Young and beyond. "Playing 'Ocean Avenue' at that festival, as the sun's going down in Las Vegas, it's going to be monumental," he says with a smile, adding that they'd love to continue touring.

"I'm excited to see what's next, because I just have no idea," Key says. "Every phone call we get is more shocking and exciting than the last one, so I think the next few years are going to be really incredible."

Yellowcard will perform at the When We Were Young festival on Oct. 21 and Oct. 22.

Yellowcard proves pop-punk is not dead (Syracuse concert review, setlist, photos)

Pop-punk is not dead. Even Yellowcard, the headliner at Thursday night’s concert at St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview, seems a little surprised by that.

The genre peaked in the late ‘90s and early 2000s with artists like Blink-182 , Good Charlotte, Fall Out Boy , Simple Plan, All-American Rejects and dozens of others. Now two decades later, some of the biggest acts of Warped Tour and MTV days gone by are headlining their own tours — like Yellowcard — or uniting for nostalgia events like the When We Were Young festival . The fans and artists are older, but the music they love hasn’t changed.

“It’s safe to say that the band is bigger than we’ve ever been in our entire career right now,” Yellowcard singer Ryan Key told Rolling Stone last week. “We have a running joke that when the pandemic hit and the world was sort of on the brink that maybe the world did actually end and we’re in an alternate timeline now. And that’s why the band is so big.”

About 4,000 people came to see Yellowcard’s “20 Years of Ocean Avenue” tour at St. Joe’s Amp in Syracuse. It’s a relatively small crowd for the 17,500-capacity venue, but the pavilion-only show still sounded like a full house when the audience sang along at the top of their lungs to songs like openers Story of the Year’s “Until the Day I Die” and Mayday Parade’s “Jamie All Over.” (It’s still weird to see the lawn empty at the amphitheater, though.)

Yellowcard front-loaded its 90-minute set with a trip down memory lane on “Way Away” and “Breathing,” from the band’s 2003 album “Ocean Avenue.” Key’s voice was well-complemented by violinist and backup singer Sean Mackin, plus the fan chorus made songs like “Believe” and “Empty Apartment” sound bigger than ever.

Yellowcard dipped into the rest of its catalog, too, including 2006′s “Lights and Sounds” and 2007′s “Light Up the Sky.” Later songs like “With You Around” and “Awakening” didn’t fare as well, but a duet version of “Hang You Up” (from 2011′s “When You’re Through Thinking, Say Yes”) sounded great with Mayday Parade’s Derek Sanders joining in on stage.

And it’s not all about the past, either. Pop-punk has made a comeback in recent years with newer artists like Machine Gun Kelly, Olivia Rodrigo, Meet Me @ The Alter and Willow. Veterans like Fall Out Boy, Avril Lavigne, Paramore and All Time Low have released new music over the past year — Yellowcard, too.

“We were not thinking at all about making any new music,” Key told the Syracuse crowd before performing “Childhood Eyes” from Yellowcard’s new EP of the same name that features Pierce the Veil and Dashboard Confessional. “We all live in different cities and have families and things... but then we played one show and the energy between the four of us up here was just so incredible.”

Yellowcard closed the night with the band’s two biggest songs, “Only One” and the catchy radio smash “Ocean Avenue.” All the 30- and 40-somethings in the crowd were suddenly “16 and it felt so right.”

This Wild Life, which also jokingly calls itself “Hot Topic Mumford & Sons,” opened the show with a vibey 20-minute set highlighted by acoustic guitars, covers of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” and Blink-182′s “I Miss You,” and even a brief workout with push-ups and jumping jacks .

Story of the Year sounded flawless, injecting the early portion of the night with hair-thrashing energy on songs “And the Hero Will Drown” and “The Antidote.” Only bassist Adam Russell wasn’t jumping around, but he had a good excuse: A walking boot on his injured foot. The band’s 35-minute set closed with the anthemic “Until the Day I Die.”

Mayday Parade had even more fun, with each band member running around on stage throughout songs like “Oh Well, Oh Well” and “Jersey.” The husky-voiced Sanders sounded best when he took things down a notch on the piano-driven “Miserable at Best,”

Emo Night Brooklyn kept things moving between each set, DJing on stage with a mix of emo, alternative rock and pop-punk favorites like Metro Station’s “Shake It,” All-American Rejects’ “Dirty Little Secret,” Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar We’re Going Down” and (of course) The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside.” He’ll be back in Syracuse to perform Sept. 23 at The Song & Dance .

LIVE REVIEW, PHOTOS: Yellowcard’s Final World Tour

The American pop-punk band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1997, YELLOWCARD , is saying goodbye with a Final World Tour . Yes you read that right. The band we all know and love for hits like “Ocean Avenue”, “Only One” and “Here I Am Alive” released their final self-titled album this year,  Yellowcard, and announced their Final World Tour after 20 joyous years making music. The final lineup consists of Ryan Key on lead vocals and guitar, Sean Mackin on violin and vocals, Ryan Mendez holding down lead guitar and backing vocals, and Josh Portman on bass.

Statement from the band: “When saying farewell, it is hard to know where to start, especially when there are so many reasons not to say it, but the time has come to share this news, after countless discussions and months of thought, we have decided that it is time for Yellowcard to come to an end. This will be our last album and our final world tour.”

On Tuesday, November 15 th , Yellowcard played a sold out Baltimore Soundstage. Baltimore Soundstage is a one level mid-size venue located in the heart of downtown Baltimore, Maryland. The place was packed to maximum capacity, aka nuts to butts, and the crowd was almost as loud as the band as they sang along. The band opened their twenty-four song set with 2003 hit “Believe” followed by songs off their 2016 farewell album such as “Rest In Peace” and “What Appears”.  Between songs, lead singer Ryan Key took time to talk to the crowd and at times things got emotional when he shared how difficult the decision was for Yellowcard to call it quits and tough times with his family since Ryan’s aunt passed recently due to brain cancer. I walked past fans covering their mouths and shedding tears in silence. There’s no question that so many people connect with the band on a personal level and Yellowcard will be missed dearly. The music sounded mesmerizing and aside from a few emotional breaks, fans were jumping, screaming, singing and crowd surfing like you would expect at a pop-punk concert. The band delivered a high energy, attention-grabbing set and they ended the show with a two song encore performing fan favorites “Only One” and “Ocean Avenue”. Yellowcard continues their final shows at many locations worldwide, concluding March 25, 2017 in Anaheim, California.

“Announcing a Yellowcard tour is something I never thought we would get to do again,” says Ryan Key. “Much less, a tour with bands of this caliber made up of such amazing people and good friends. Being given the opportunity to play music together again is truly a gift that we are not taking for granted. We are going to make these shows extremely special for all of the fans who we have missed so much these last six years.”

Certified double Platinum in the US by the RIAA, Gold in Canada, and Silver in the UK, Ocean Avenue solidified Yellowcard’s indelible mark on the music world. The undying esteem that the album owns has not diminished in the twenty years since its release.

They may be one of the few Pop-Punk bands with a violinist but don’t think Yellowcard are an empty gimmick – they’ve got a platinum album to prove otherwise.

Formed in Florida in 1997 the band took its name from their high school days when ‘yellow cards’ were handed out for party fouling. The year they formed they released their debut album ‘Midget Tossing’ and then followed up 2 years later with ‘Where we stand’.

At this point however, after a bit of line up shifting, the band ended up with a fresh start and radically changed its sound from hardcore leaning, to a more melodic, pop punk sound. With this new start they were able to build up enough buzz to sign with Capitol records who, in 2003, released ‘Ocean Avenue’ which would go on to become the band’s finest achievement.

When it spawned hit singles like ‘Way Away’ and ‘Ocean Avenue’, the band’s popularity sky rocketed and before they knew it they were experiencing successes they never could have imagined. The album went platinum and soon enough the band were doing everything from headlining the Warped tour to picking up MTV awards.

With newfound fame, the band continued forward releasing albums until in 2008 they went on hiatus for personal reasons leaving fans heartbroken however they needn’t have worried as in just a couple of years they were back together releasing albums and continuing to tour. So while many may write off Yellowcard as just ‘that band with a violinist’, to their fans they are so much more and that’s what counts.

Live reviews

At first, I wasn't totally sold on going. But then I thought "why not?" So, I brought my ticket to go, and 71 days later, it arrived.

Now, Mayday Parade were also coming with them, which was totally awesome! Because they are amazing themselves.

So, the Sunday night before the show, I literally didn't sleep at all. Got out of bed at 1:30am, on the Monday, and was leaving the house at 4am. Arrived to the venue at 4:30am, and it was fucking freezing. It was -4.3 degrees for like 5 hours, but felts like -7 degrees. It was ridiculous. At around 12:30pm, some awesome people showed up and came and sat with us. Half an hour later, I had drunk 5 big energy drinks and hadn't thrown up yet. But by the time it got to around 4:30lm, I was feeling a bit dizzy.

It was finally time to go into the venue after freezing outside for 15 hours. And I ran straight to the center and grabbed onto the barrier. Amazing.

It actually didn't take long for everybody to get inside as there was only 250-300 people.

Openside came on, and I had been talking to the drummer outside, who was really nice, and they came on stage and nailed it! Amazing. Their cover of Sugar, We're Going Down Swinging and amazing.

Mayday Parade.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Jersey started and I was gone, jumping as much as I could with being pushed from every direction. But when Hold Onto Me started, one of my very favorite songs ever, I cried a little. It is so beautiful. But by the time Mayday Parade were closing with Black Cat, my entire body hurt, and my voice was sounding all stupid and I badly needed water.

Yellowcard.

Yes. They came on stage, and fucking nailed it! Never seen a band with that much energy, and giving out that many good vibes.

I myself have also never had that much energy after not sleeping for 24 hours. This band is amazing. And everybody should go and see them. Even if you don't like them, go and see them because after you see them live, you're gonna like them. They're a bunch of funny people, with really great music that totally know how to have a good time.

I loved every second of their set, and I can't wait until they come back.

This year I attended Slam Dunk fest in Leeds and was really there to see New Found Glory. Due to a technical error onstage, Yellowcard only had about half an hour rather than a full hour to play what would've been a full playthrough of Ocean Avene. So when they finally emerged on-stage after ages of waiting around holding onto our decent place up-front close to the main stage my expectations were pretty low. But I was more than pleasantly surprised.

Like others have mentioned, they are incredibly polite and fun guys to see play. They addressed the issue with the technical faults and apologised even though it was not their fault. I was surprised at the amount of fans around me who looked really disappointed. What could've turned into an outright riot soon transformed into the best live performance I've seen yet.

To ignite an audience in such a short amount of time was totally a new thing for me. Their sound was amazing, as good if not better than studio quality. They played all the hits from Ocean Avenue, making decisions on the fly and improvising parts of their songs to befit the situation. I got the feeling they were putting absolutely everything into the show. It was crazy. Sheer, awesome, back-flipping epicness.

I became a fan that day, learning songs I hadn't heard once, falling in love with that sweet yet raw melodic sound. Their guitars were nice and loud, complimenting the rest of the instruments, especially the violin. Definitely the best-sounding band on the main stage. I'll never forget it.

I must have caught them on an off day when I saw them at Warped '07 because I wasn't overly impressed (still loved their music). Now I'm kicking myself for not getting out to see one of their shows sooner, I definitely missed out. I saw them again at Warped this year, and wow, just wow. The crowd was absolutely losing their mind and the band's energy was so infectious. I had such a crazy good time I made sure to get there early for the next Warped show I went to later that week so I could be at the barrier.

On warped they played a decent mix of favorites off every album. When I saw them headlining in the fall the set heavily featured their newest album Lift a Sail. I managed to snag a VIP ticket with a meet and greet, the guys were funny and gracious and even though Ryan Key was feeling sick he still came out.

There are awesome soaring solos and a couple quiet moments for heartfelt ballads. Pay attention to violinist Sean Mackin to catch him do a backflip when he's not playing. The original drummer, LP, has left but I think Nate Young (formerly from Anberlin) did a great job. The energy and momentum was pretty high from start to finish.

The crowds were mostly in their mid 20s and pretty rough throughout the entire show. Expect lots of crowd surfing, circle pits, and moshing. I know I love crowds like that but if you're not comfortable/experienced you should definitely stick to the sides or the back.

Overall it's a great time and I left with a huge smile on my face. Can't wait to see them again!

Yellowcard’s debut Ocean Avenue came out over 10 years ago! There’s a lot to catch up on but with them still making new music and being one of the best live bands, Yellowcard are a band you need to know about. ‘Ocean Avenue’ and ‘Light Up The Sky’ are probably the songs you are most likely to have heard of, although they may be from sometime ago. When the band got back together after a break of several years, new music was soon to follow with the fantastic ‘When You’re Through Thinking Say Yes’ and the newest album ‘Southern Air’ featuring one of my personal favourites: ‘Here I Am Alive’. They perform a great mix of songs, both old and new in each setlist and really bring the crowd alive, whether at a festival or at one of their headlining shows, leaving everyone smiling, wanting more and remembering why Yellowcard have been around for so long; it doesn’t get much better than this. Fans of Yellowcard come in all shapes and sizes, those who’ve been with them for 10 years and those introduced there and then, but all can come together and go crazy for a night of fun, thanks to these great guys from California and next time, we hope to see you there!

Recently reformed alt-rockers Yellowcard are back on the live circuit to play to fans with their melodic rock, bringing sets made of old and new music to venues around the globe. Despite the several line up changes and numerous hiatuses, the fans have stuck by Yellowcard and as the lights go down in Coventry's Kasbah the cheers that erupt are evidence of the band's unwavering popularity.

Beginning with a number of tracks from 2012 LP 'Southern Air' the crowd remain enthusiastic as the energetic band tears through the new material with vigour. The violin is an unusual addition for a rock quartet but when watching the intensity in which Sean Mackin plays the instrument spurs the crowd on to cheer and shriek during his personal solos.

It didn't take long for the band to bring out the old singles such as 'Way Away' and 'Lights & Sounds' and they seem as excitable as the crowd during the intro to these cult favourites. The largest cheers of the night though are definitely reserved for the encore duo of 'Only One' and their most recognisable hit 'Ocean Avenue'. Despite some time away, Yellowcard seem refreshed and re-energised onstage.

I grew up listening to Yellowcard and I saw them at the Road to Warped Tour 2014 in Anchorage, Alaska. The short time that they played was awesome and so when I heard that they were doing their final tour I bought VIP tickets immediately regardless of who would go with me, what homework I had, or how much it would cost. The concert was even more amazing than I would've expected! These guys are so talented, kind, and passionate about what they do. I am so blessed to have met them and be a part of the experience! I am moved every time I listen to their songs and those emotions were amplified when I saw them live. They sounded incredible and I'm going to miss them. Thank you for sharing this experience and giving me the opportunity to say farewell!

Awesome concert! At first it seemed a bit calm since not many seemed to know the kenneths. At second was the band Normandie here people got a bit more loose and started to dance but what happened when yellowcard came on I honestly didn't expect. They came on and BOOM in split second everyone went crazy and almost the whole crowd was in a moshpit that was simply awesome! The music of all bands was great and i had a great time. Unfortunately this is yellowcard's last tour so better go to seem them live now you still can!

They rocked the f**k out of the Baltimore Soundstage! I am very sad they are on their final world tour. My advice to everyone would be go see them while you can. It was an amazing show. Like Torches was also a fantastic bad. I'm not sure if they will be on the rest of the tour with yellowcard but you should definitely check them out too. Thanks again to Yellowcard for putting on a great show and for all the music they gave us over the years!!!

This has to be one of the best concerts I have ever had the privilege to attend. I'm so happy I was able to be apart of the final tour. They're show was lively, entertaining, and they interacted with the crowd well. You could tell they are down to earth people and have a huge appreciation for their fans. I will never forget this night or Yellowcard.

Okay, we all know Yellowcard is amazing. But you thought they were good in recording? That's nothing compared to them live. Yellowcard live is INCREDIBLE. They sound wonderful, they're funny, they're polite, and they know how to put on a dang good show. If you EVER have the opportunity to go see Yellowcard live, DO IT. No regrets, I promise.

Yellowcard are returning to the road this summer. The band is touring for the first time in almost seven years to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their watershed album Ocean Avenue . The trek kicks off on July 5 at the Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore and wraps up on August 8 at the Levitt Pavilion in Denver. Throughout the run, the band will be performing in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Atlanta, and more alongside This Wild Life. Additional special guests Mayday Parade, Story of the Year, and Anberlin will appear on select dates.

“Announcing a Yellowcard tour is something I never thought we would get to do again,” says frontman Ryan Key. “Much less, a tour with bands of this caliber made up of such amazing people and good friends. Being given the opportunity to play music together again is truly a gift that we are not taking for granted. We are going to make these shows extremely special for all of the fans who we have missed so much these last six years.”

Yellowcard retired as a band six years ago. They released their tenth (and final, for now) studio LP, Yellowcard , via Hopeless Records in 2016. They returned to the stage at Riot Fest in Chicago last September.

“When we stepped away in 2017, all of us thought it was truly the end,” the band said at the time. “However our journey together continues to surprise us.”

Certified double platinum in the US by the RIAA, gold in Canada, and silver in the UK,  Ocean Avenue  solidified Yellowcard’s indelible mark on the music world.  The undying esteem that the album owns has not diminished in the twenty years since its release. With signature singles “Way Away,” “Only One,” and the title track “Ocean Avenue” among the 13 tracks, it not only marks their entrance into the mainstream but also the stratospheric success of the band whose subsequent albums cemented the band’s legacy in the history of alternative music.

Jennifer Lopez Quietly Rebrands Tour as Greatest Hits Show Amid Weak Ticket Sales

Jennifer Lopez Variety Cover Story

After canceling seven dates of her first North American tour in five years amid weak ticket sales, Jennifer Lopez has renamed it to apparently broaden its scope, changing it from “This Is Me… Now” to “This Is Me… Live | The Greatest Hits.”

Requests for comment from Lopez’s reps and Live Nation, which is producing the tour, went unanswered. Live Nation’s site hasn’t been updated to reflect the tour’s name change, but it does have conflicting titles on Lopez’s listings, including “This Is Me… Live” and “This Is Me… Now The Tour.” While some venues hosting Lopez’s performances haven’t changed the original listings on their respective sites, there are a few instances confirming the rebrand, for shows at Palm Springs’ Acrisure Arena and Inglewood’s The Forum . A sponsored Facebook ad from Lopez also features a graphic with the new title.

Upon release in February, “This Is Me… Now” struggled to find an audience, selling 14,000 copies in its first week. While the album did debut atop the Billboard Top Album Sales Chart due to 11,000 in physical sales, it arrived at No. 38 on the Billboard 200, becoming the second of her nine studio albums to bow outside the top 10.

The album was one part of a self-financed $20 million multimedia project including the tour and the two films, “This Is Me…Now: A Love Story,” and a documentary, “The Greatest Love Story Never Told.” Variety described the endeavor as an examination of “Lopez’s life as a serial romantic” following her romantic rekindling with actor Ben Affleck, who she married in 2022 after nearly two decades apart.

Tik Tok food critic leaves big impact, big tips after GTA restaurant tour

'keith lee effect' is real, say 3 restaurant owners whose businesses got boost from visit.

Keith Lee in Scarborough

Social Sharing

Three Greater Toronto Area restaurant owners say they are feeling the "Keith Lee effect" after the Tik Tok food critic came to town to sample their offerings.

Keith Lee, an American mixed martial artist turned food critic, conducted a food tour in the GTA on the weekend. Lee has more than 16 million followers on Tik Tok. The videos of his GTA stops are topping more than four million views.

Owners say the "Keith Lee effect" is real and has given their businesses a boost. On his tour of the GTA, Lee sampled Iraqi shawarma, Korean sponge toffee lattes, pepperoni and fried chicken pizza, and baked macroni and cheese.

Ibrahim Al-Ameri, co-owner of Sumaq Iraqi Charcoal Grill, an Iraqi shawarma restaurant in Scarborough, says his restaurant is usually busy but it is now really busy after Lee visited on Saturday. Lee had veal, chicken and mixed shawarma.

Al-Ameri said Lee has prompted people to come to the restaurant who most likely would have not visited it before.

"We found out when everybody did, when we saw the video was uploaded. It was insane — it went viral. We couldn't be more excited," he said.

"Ever since he came by, the wait time has doubled," he said. "It's very exciting feedback."

Keith Lee in Ajax

Colter Smith, co-owner of Biscuits to Baskets in Ajax, said patrons might have to get in line now that Lee has been there. Smith said "it's been pretty wild" since Lee dropped by on Friday.

Smith said he had "no clue" who Lee's wife and sister were when they ordered food. Lee came in afterwards.

The Lee family bought Korean sponge toffee lattes and some cake. Lee offered them a "very nice tip." The video was published on Saturday. Business "exploded" on Sunday, Smith said.

"People are just calling us left and right. It's pretty cool," he said.

"It's really noticeable — the Keith Lee effect is a real thing for sure," he added. "We thought we had plenty Sunday and we sold out of it so quick."

Keith Lee in Toronto

Rodney Best, co-owner of Afro's Pizza in Toronto, said Lee came in on Friday. He had two Davis Jr. pizzas, one Hendrix Experience pizza, one Beef samosa pizza and one Afro's Baked Mac and Cheese. He left a $3,000 tip. His review was published on Sunday.

"After he was done tipping, he then sent another tip on top of that to pay for the night's pizza for the rest of the guests who came through here. Anyone who came by, they were able to get a free pizza for the next three hours after he left. From 8 to 11, we were just giving away pizzas," he said.

The restaurant had to close down on Monday to restock its kitchen.

Lee has 'massive influence,' food writer says

Suresh Doss, a Toronto food writer, said how restaurants are reviewed has changed with the advent of social media.

People used to read reviews by food critics in newspapers, then flock to restaurants, but now people will watch reviews on such platforms as Instagram and Tik Tok, then descend on eateries, he said. Lee is leading the way, he added.

"I think he's probably the most influential food person right now on social media because he approaches food from a very organic point, where he goes to places, pays for his food and then does this thing in the car, where he does selfies and he reviews the food and he has a scale," Doss said.

"Someone like Keith Lee has a massive influence where they see something and they're like: 'I want to experience what he experienced. I want to eat that thing.'"

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Get Loose in Los Angeles

By Ethan Millman

Ethan Millman

Three hours into Bruce Springsteen ‘s epic return to Los Angeles on Thursday night with the E Street Band, he stared down the sold-out crowd at the Forum. “Do you have anything left?” he shouted, midway through “Twist and Shout,” the second-to-last song of his first L.A. show in eight years. Five decades in, the magic of a Springsteen show remains: He always seems to have a little bit left in the tank.

The 2024 version of the tour has been looser than last year’s, which stuck fairly close to a single set list, and Thursday was no exception. Springsteen kicked off with a true rarity, a cover of John Lee Hooker’s “Boom Boom” (most frequently played on the Tunnel of Love Express Tour back in 1988), before jumping into “Lonesome Day” (rarely played last year, but now a staple in the set) and “Prove It All Night,” then his live -favorite arena-rock reworking of Jimmy Cliff’s “Trapped.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Six dates into their return to the road, Springsteen and the E Street Band sounded like they had never been interrupted. “Are you having fun yet? Because we haven’t had fun yet,” Springsteen told the crowd just over an hour into his show. “This is our pre-fun. We’re here to wake you up, shake you up, and take you to higher ground. The E Street Band is here to bring the joyous power of rock & roll into your life. But we need your help. We plan on sending you home with your feet hurting, your hands hurting, your ass in paralysis, and your sexual organs stimulated.”

Springsteen maintains a remarkably simple setup and show presentation compared to the other blockbuster live shows currently on the road. The visuals are limited to video screens and elegant stage lights, keeping the focus on the 17 musicians onstage with him. He doesn’t really need much else.

From there, the show was all joy and catharsis, with an unbroken string of hits and live favorites, beginning with Nils Lofgren’s jaw-dropping guitar virtuosity on “Because the Night,” and inevitably reaching “Thunder Road” and “Born to Run.” As he has throughout the tour, Springsteen finished the show alone with his meditation on life after death, “I’ll See You in My Dreams.”

Springsteen and the E Street Band will play another Forum show on Sunday.
