Ensenada Cruises Port Guide

On a cruise to Mexico , an Ensenada cruise port of call takes you to a colorful, exciting city where you can enjoy the bustle along its broad promenade, head into the quiet of wine country, or dive into local history and culture found at its museums. Aside from its cosmopolitan sights, Ensenada is also close to impressive natural wonders and long, sandy beaches.

Experience the culture of Ensenada on a visit to the Riviera Center, which is located in a former hotel and casino. The building features stunning architecture with ornate detailing on its impressive woodwork and beautiful tiles. Here, you’ll find the Museum of History, which houses a number of significant artwork and artifacts. You can learn more about the history on display and the building itself on a docent-led tour through the museum. The center is also home to an adjacent garden where visitors can walk around.

This exciting boardwalk is a must-see in Ensenada. It’s home to two of Ensenada’s most iconic sights: the colorful Ensenada sign and a huge Mexican flag that weighs over 300 pounds. After you get your photo op by the sign, explore the rest of the Malecon, which has a farmers-market feel thanks to the many vendors selling local produce, artisan crafts, and other goods. You’ll also find pretty water fountains shooting out of the ground which light up at night.

La Bufadora

La Bufadora is the name given to a huge blowhole located by Ensenada. At one of the largest blowholes in North America, watch as Pacific waves rush through a cave and up into the air every few minutes, sometimes with a blowhole fountain that reaches 100 feet high.

Zipline Over Las Cañadas

If you want some adrenaline-inducing adventure during your time in Ensenada, embark on an excursion that will take you ziplining high above the Mexican wilderness in Las Cañadas. Marvel at the wide canopy of the treetops as you zoom above the breathtaking scenery. Two of the ziplines you’ll go down are over a quarter of a mile long, giving you plenty of time to take in the views as you squeal in excitement.

Wine Tasting in Guadalupe Valley

The nearby Guadalupe Valley is quickly becoming one of the hottest wine destinations in the world for wine connoisseurs to visit. The region’s unique blends are gaining international attention, and a tour around the valley to its various wine tasting rooms provides you with an unpretentious wine experience. You’ll learn about how wine is made in the Guadalupe Valley, which varietals are the most popular, and how they taste, all while soaking in gorgeous vineyard views.

One of the top things to try in Ensenada is the Baja fish taco, which consists of deep-fried fish placed within a corn tortilla and topped with a tangy white sauce and a heap of cabbage. The secret to this simple yet delicious dish is in the white sauce. You’ll find them in stands along the malecon. Other popular dishes to try include burritos, tamales, mole, and quesadillas.

During your Ensenada cruise port of call, don’t miss tasting local wine from the Guadalupe Valley. For one of the best margaritas in town, head to Hussong’s Cantina, a landmark bar that serves up potent margaritas.

Culture & History of the Ensenada Cruise Port

The origins of Ensenada are traced back to the Yuman People, who inhabited the area when Spanish settlers arrived in the mid-1500s.The city was originally called San Mateo by the settlers. In 1602, its name was changed to Ensenada, which means “cove” in Spanish. Today, Ensenada is a bustling, vibrant city that continues to evolve into more than just a quick getaway for cruisers and those visiting from north of the border. It was added to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in 2015, mostly due to a local food scene brimming with delicious cuisine that incorporates innovative approaches to sustainability and intercultural elements. The nearby fisheries and wineries also contribute to the food culture in Ensenada as well as to the economy. 90% of Mexico’s wine production occurs in Ensenada, and the region is home to over 50 wineries encompassing over 500 wine labels.

The Ensenada, Mexico cruise port is conveniently located close to the city center, making it easy to see top sights, do some shopping, and get a bite to eat or drink shortly after getting off your ship. You’ll also find a market selling souvenirs right by the cruise pier, along with a liquor store and pharmacy.

If you don’t want to walk to town (which is roughly a mile away from the pier), simply hop on one of the many shuttle buses that run between the cruise pier and downtown Ensenada. There are also taxis waiting by the cruise port to take passengers into town or to one of the outlying sights. One of the most stress-free ways to get around is on a shore excursion that will get you to where you’re going in comfort and guarantees you’ll be back to the ship before it departs the Ensenada, Mexico cruise port for another destination.

The official currency in Ensenada is the Mexican Peso, though many businesses will accept the U.S. Dollar as well. It’s good to double check before hiring a service or dining somewhere if you’re planning to pay in cash and use dollars. If you need to withdraw some pesos, you can find an ATM at one of the several banks downtown. Credit cards are widely accepted here. When tipping in Mexico, use similar customs you would use in the U.S.A. Generally, you’ll want to tip 15% to 20% of the total bill for service in a restaurant or bar, or when hiring a taxi service. Tips for tour guides are also appreciated.

A Weekend Getaway Guide: Carnival Cruise to Catalina Island & Ensenada

By The LA Girl

Carnival Imagination docked at port

If you’re looking for a fun, creative way to get away, a cruise may be just the ticket!  Carnival  offers an incredibly affordable and amazing 4-day cruise that stops in Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico . It leaves from Long Beach Cruise Terminal so you won’t have to deal with the airport.

It’s a great option for an extended weekend getaway since lodging, meals and entertainment are all included in the cost. You won’t have to worry about driving anywhere and you can have fun all night long and be just a few flights of stairs away from your room.

There’s no point in worrying about getting bored on the cruise because there’s literally a million things to do. Since I don’t want this blog post to go on forever, I’ll only highlight my top 13 things to do on a Carnival Cruise to Catalina Island and Ensenada.

Eat to your heart’s content  –  On Carnival Imagination , there’s no shortage of food since there are dining options 24/7. There’s fine dining for dinner where you can enjoy a beautiful 3-course meal or a casual buffet, depending on your mood.

Beautifully decorated shrimp entree

Watch some great shows  – Looking for something to do after an amazing dinner? There’s too many options to choose from! Enjoy one of the live musical shows, watch some comedy, sing (or just watch) at the karaoke bar – there are endless entertainment options.

Relax and treat yourself at the spa  – The onboard spa is pretty amazing! I opted for the Spatopia treatment which included a full body massage and a full facial. It was so relaxing and my massage therapist also recommended a detox ritual that I’m currently doing.

Lounge by the pool  – If you want to just chill, then enjoy lounging by the ship’s main pool. You can take a dip or hang out in the hot tubs. If there’s too many kids around, you can head over to the 21 and over area for a more serene environment.

Carnival Imagination pool deck

Shop ’til you drop  – Looking for some retail therapy? The shops onboard feature souvenirs, fine jewelry, cosmetics, liquors, accessories and more! They have lots of sales and promos going on all the time, so make sure you drop by a few times.

Win big at the casino  – You don’t have to go to Vegas to gamble! There’s a casino onboard and you’ll get to play your favorite table games and maybe even win a jackpot on the slots.

Explore Catalina Island  – On this cruise, you’ll get to stop at the quaint town of Avalon. It’s a beautiful island town with lots of history and plenty of activities to do while the cruise is docked for the day. Make sure you book an excursion and make the most of your time at Catalina Island.  Note: Excursions are not included in the cruise price and are an extra charge.

Many boats in the water with Catalina Island town behind

Go on a food tour  – We are so happy to have booked the  Taste of Catalina Food Tour ! Our amazing tour guide was a local and knew so much about the island. We went to 7 different restaurants and had incredible tastes at each spot. I highly recommend it!

Travel to another country  – The second stop on this cruise is to Ensenada, Mexico. If you’ve never been, this will be your chance to experience a little bit of local Mexican culture. There are many types of excursions available to book during your time here including horseback riding, ATV adventures, winery tours and more.

Eat local Mexican cuisine  – During our time in Ensenada, my mom and I had an incredible lunch featuring fresh oysters, steamed clams, abalone pasta and a panna cotta to finish. I’m still thinking about that meal even now.

Dine at the Chef’s Table  – For fellow foodies, I highly recommend experiencing the Chef’s Table dinner. This dinner is limited to only 15 guests and you will be personally escorted by the chef to the galley where you’ll see where over 20,000 meals are prepared each day.

You’ll enjoy some tastings and also meet the Head Pastry Chef who will show you how to make their delicious chocolate cake. The main dinner features a 7-course meal that is beautifully presented. During our dinner, we also had the pleasure of a magic show in-between courses – a true delight!

3 Day Baja Mexico Cruise from Long Beach with Carnival

Thinking of booking a weekend cruise from Long Beach to Ensenada in 2023? This article is everything you need to know about cruising from Long Beach to Ensenada with Carnival Cruises. It’s the perfect weekend getaway cruise from long beach to Mexico!

My husband, son, and I sailed with Carnival for this 3 Day Baja Mexico cruise from Long Beach . It is a great long weekend vacation, especially for anyone within easy driving distance of Long Beach, California. It is a super fun way to spend a weekend and what my husband and I found out, is we truly had a vacation. Because of the teen club, which my son loved, we found we had lots of time to relax and enjoy the cruise to Mexico as adults.

Cruise to Mexico on the Carnival Radiance

As vacations or weekend getaways go, a cruise is a much simpler trip compared to any other type of travel. One of my favorite things about a cruise is once you board, you have arrived at your home away from home. Simply unpack and you are done!

Unlike a road trip where you are moving from location to location — on a cruise, there is no need to constantly unpack and pack again, change hotels, or drive from place to place.

So if you’re interested in a fun cruise for a weekend getaway, and are interested in what  Carnival has to offer, this post is for you! When we sailed with Carnival we were on the Imagination ship, but the Radiance is the newest ship in their line for this weekend cruise.

Long Beach Cruise Terminal

Long Beach Cruise Terminal

When you cruise out of Long Beach with Carnival, you’ll depart via the Long Beach Cruise Terminal, which is the busiest port in North America with ships docking five days a week.

The 146,000-square-foot state-of-the-art Long Beach Cruise Terminal has been totally renovated and is beautiful. The palm tree-lined terminal, is huge and allows for quick and easy embarkation.

To enter the terminal, you’ll need to provide a boarding pass and a passport because it’s an international cruise.

Fun Fact: The terminal encompasses the world’s largest, free-span geodesic dome, which was originally built for  Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose plane . I’m probably dating myself here, but the Spruce Goose was located here in Long Beach until the mid-1990’s when it was then moved to Oregon.

Our Mexico 3 Day Carnival Cruise Itinerary on Carnival

Carnival Radiance is a Fantasy-class cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line. We departed on this Mexico 3 day cruise from Long Beach and visited Ensenada, Mexico. Our cruise itinerary:

  • Day 1 – depart Long Beach
  • Day 2 – fun day at sea
  • Day 3 – Ensenada
  • Day 4 – arrive Long Beach

This is a fun itinerary for a weekend getaway, but after experiencing a 3-day cruise, we all agreed that we’d love to try a longer cruise. Between the teen club for my son and all the fun things to do onboard, there just wasn’t enough time to experience it all plus enjoy some downtime.

Boarding The Ship in Long Beach (Embarkation on Carnival) for our Cruise to Ensenada

The cruise to Ensenada sets sail at 5:30 PM and everyone must be aboard 60-minutes before sailing. Staterooms are ready at 1:30 PM, so, make your first day onboard more fun by arriving at the earliest boarding times!

Guests who are scheduled to arrive before 1:30 PM can check their bags curbside so they can be free to enjoy lunch, which will be served on Lido Deck 10 until 4:00 PM.

Tip! Bring a Carry-On Bag: When you first board your cruise ship, it can be a few hours before your luggage is delivered to your stateroom. Pack a few essentials like swimwear, sunscreen and a change of clothes in case you want to go to the pool or water slides.

Carnival Staterooms

Stateroom on Carnival

There are three stateroom categories on the Carnival Radiance; Interior, Ocean View, and Suite. There are two types of suites; junior and grand. We had an ocean view room, which is listed as sleeping up to five people.

This would be an extremely tight fit. Our room was set up with a king-size bed and a Pullman (a bed attached to the wall — like an upper bunk– that can be pushed up for more space when it’s not being used for a bed).

We found we spent very little time in our room and used it mostly for sleeping and ‘getting ready’ for the day or dinner.

There is so much to do on the Carnival cruise and with a three-day cruise, we found we spent very little time in our room and preferred lounging at the pool to the stateroom.

Planning Your Day Onboard

Each day on the cruise you will receive a “Fun Times” itinerary that includes everything there is to do onboard. It shares sections for “top entertainment’, “food”, “drinks”, “spa”, “music”, “movies”, “casino”, “shopping”, “kids & teens” as well as a schedule for everything happening with the times and locations.

It’s your cruise ship bible and we carried it with us and constantly referred to it throughout the day and evening.

Sailing With Children or a Teenager

Teenagers on Carnival Cruises

When we sailed on the Carnival Imagination, it offered three clubs for kids; Camp Ocean for 2–11 year-olds, Circle C for 12-14 year-olds and Club O2 for 15-17 year-olds. Our son had just turned 16 and loved the teen club.

It opened around noon daily and closed at 1 A.M. As I shared above, my husband and I found that our son wanted to hang out with the other teens and for the most part planned his days and nights around the club.

The teens in Club O2 hung out in the club room, went to onboard shows, the video arcade and met for meals. Our son had a great time and loved connecting with other teens and my husband and I found we were on our own for most of our cruise — having dinner on our own and enjoying many of the onboard shows.

I’m sure if we did a longer cruise, there would be more family time, but with just three days my son opted to hang with the other teenagers on board.

So you know: The kids and teens clubs are all included in the price of the cruise.

Food On Board the Carnival Cruise

Carnival imagination

There are lots of eating options onboard Carnival for breakfast, lunch, dinner, late-night munchies and snacks including these options incorporated in your cruise price:

  • Main dining room
  • Blue Iguana (Mexican Cantina)
  • Guy’s Burger Joint
  • Pirate Pizza (24 hours)
  • Carnival Deli (24 hours)
  • Lido Restaurant (Buffet)
  • Soft-serve ice cream (24 hours)
  • 24 Hour Room Service

The most notable of the restaurants is best-selling author, restaurateur and Food Network personality Guy Fieri’s Burger Joint which strives to bring all the authentic appeal of a roadside burger shack as the cool poolside spot for hot burgers and hand-cut fries.

The busiest spots for lunch seemed to be the Burger Joint and Blue Iguana Mexican Cafe, both located on the Lido Deck. These two are quick and easy and located near the pool.

You can also head inside on the same deck to check out made to order pizza and deli sandwiches as well as the Lido Deck buffet.

Dinner has many options as well, but we opted for the dining room each evening, which includes a three-course meal. You have a choice of two seatings– 6pm or 8:15pm.

If there’s one thing about cruises, it’s that you have lots and lots of choices and you’ll certainly never go hungry! You can eat at all these places  on the Carnival cruise.

Food Allergies: If you have dietary restrictions like I do (gluten-free) they are more than willing to accommodate you. I ordered my meal for the following evening during dinner and they would create whatever dish I wanted gluten-free.

Pool & Outdoor Bars

carnival imagination pool

There is one resort-style pool on the Carnival cruise to Mexico and it is located on the Lido Deck. On either side of the pool, you’ll also find a Jacuzzi.

The main pool area is one of the most popular spots on the cruise during the day. There are lots of spots in both sun and shade to relax and enjoy the views of the Pacific ocean.

You’ll also find lots of fun activities happening on the Lido Deck — we caught a hairy chest contest that was fun and funny to watch.

weekend cruises ensenada

Also on the Lido Deck, you’ll find the Red Frog Rum Bar and Blue Iguana Tequila Bar.

There is also an adults-only (21 years+)  outdoor space on the Promenade level called Serenity with a large hot tub and lounge area with chaise recliners.

WATER WORKS

Waterworks on Carnival Imagination

Carnival has a waterpark called WaterWorks and it includes a twister waterslide, a double straight slide, two mini slides and a spray park. We traveled in March, which can be hit or miss as far as weather.

During our cruise, we had a bit of rain on day one and it was a tad chilly for the waterslides for us.

That didn’t stop loads of other cruisers from enjoying the slides. I’d love to head back during a warmer month and spend a good deal of my day here!

Evening Shows & Entertainment

The evening schedule regularly offers 20+ options of shows, art auctions, comedy, karaoke, trivia, meet & greets and so much more.  On a three day cruise, it’s really impossible to do it all, so you’ll want to choose wisely!

We really enjoyed the comedy on board and made a point to go to one of the three nightly shows in the Xanadu Lounge. They offer PG and adult versions (18+) of the comedy shows. Our son really enjoyed the comedy as well and joined us most evenings for the PG show.

We were really impressed by the comedy shows, musicians and the entertainers for the “Showtime” extravaganza shows in the Dynasty Lounge.

Onboard, you’ll also find the Mirage Piano Bar, Illusions Nightclub (18+), Shangri La Lounge, Dream Bar, Atrium Lobby Bar, Alchemy bar where they specialized in martinis and cocktails and have a casino.

Ensenada: A Day In Port

Port day in Ensenada

Day two of the cruise is spent docked in Ensenada. The ship arrives at approximately 8:15 am and doesn’t depart until 5:30 pm. You can spend your day onboard the ship, on an organized excursion or explore the town of Ensenada on your own.

There are more than 20 shore excursions you can book when you buy your cruise or while you are on the cruise ship. Excursion options range from nearby wine country tours of Valle de Guadalupe (Guadalupe Valley), to surfing, kayaking, food tours and lots more.

During our day in port, we chose to explore the town on our own. We’ve visited Ensenada and the wine country many times, so we enjoyed visiting a local museum, lunch at Muelle 3 and strolling through town.

Don’t Miss the Sunset

Sunset from Carnival Cruise

The sunrise and sunset can be spectacular sailing on the pacific coast. I caught a gorgeous sunset on night two of our cruise from Long Beach to Ensenada. Make sure to plan to be outside for sunset at least one night to truly enjoy mother nature at her best!

Planning Your Carnival Cruise to Mexico

Booking your cruise.

You can book your 3 Day Baja Mexico cruise from long beach with Carnival via our affiliate link with  Cruise Direct   for as little as $154 and you’ll never have to pay a booking fee.

They also have a “best price guarantee” to get your best Carnival Cruise deals and cruise from Long Beach deals, offer flexible payment plans, and have options for lots of Carnival Cruises to Mexico .

Buy Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is designed to cover unexpected medical emergencies and events such as trip cancellation, lost, stolen or damaged luggage by an airline or cruise line, and other related losses incurred while traveling.

I’m a fan of World Nomads for short-term trips. Protect yourself from possible injury & theft abroad. Read more about why you should always carry travel insurance .

Getting to and from Long Beach to Your Cruise

Long Beach Carnival cruise terminal is 23 miles from Los Angeles International Airport; travel time is approximately 50 minutes. It’s 12 miles from Long Beach Airport; travel time is approximately 20 minutes.

There’s a garage right next to the terminal and the daily rate is $20. You can also get dropped off by taxi or shuttle.

Taking a Carnival Cruise? Here are a few tips:

Need a hotel the night before or after your cruise? There are many places to stay in Long Beach. There is a wide range of hotels, from budget to luxury. For a luxury hotel that won’t break the bank, I recommend the  Westin Long Beach , which is currently the  #1 hotel on Tripadvisor .

For a mid-level hotel, I suggest the iconic Queen Mary .  Finally, for a budget hotel, try the Royal Inn Motel Long Beach . You can also check HotelsCombined for the best Long Beach Hotel Rates .

Hotels in Long Beach: Check Trip Advisor reviews for all Long Beach Hotels .

What to pack:  The temperatures each season vary greatly, but even in summer it can be chilly at night and very warm during the day. I visited in March and was very happy to have a light down jacket , warm socks (I love Ice Breaker ), a waterproof outer layer and rain jacke t, and some hiking boots (I love Keen ). If you are visiting in Winter, you’ll want to bring heavy-duty layers.

Best Time of Year for the Long Beach to Ensenada Cruise: My favorite months for the cruise are October and November. The weather tends to be warm, but not hot. Spring can be hit or miss. You may have summer-like weather or some rain. Early summer may bring foggy mornings, but they should burn off by about 10am.

6 Indispensable Items to Pack for a Carnival Cruise Vacation

  • Get the Cruising Guide to Southern California: Golden Gate to Ensenada, Mexico .
  • I always bring Bonine on a cruise. It’s for motion sickness and similar to  Dramamine but doesn’t make me drowsy.
  • Bring a good quality mirrorless camera for getting those beautiful photos of the ship and Mexico. I use the Sony Alpha a6000 .
  • You’ll get a lot of sun on board and it can be deceiving with the cool breeze, so make sure to bring Neutrogena Sunscreen, Broad Spectrum Spf 45
  • A great cross body travel bag . Crossbody bags are great for your day in Mexico. The bag hangs across your chest to keep all your valuables safe!
  • Don’t forget sunglasses for the beautiful sunny days at sea. A.J. Morgan Unisex Sunglasses are a great choice and very affordable!
  • Water shoes are a great item to pack for any pool or beach vacation. They take up little room when packing and great if you end up at a beach that is rocky or with very hot sand.

Pin it for Later!

Ah, yes, memories. I remember when the dome was built for the Spruce Goose. Now, it’s where folks can depart for weekends or weeks! Thanks for the share about this quick trip.

It has literally been a decade since I last did a cruise, but it was with Carnival and seeing your photos certainly brought back fond memories. I was the one on the Pullman bed and the teen club kept me occupied leaving my parents with lots of free time too!

Wow I never realised you could book such a short cruise (never thought of it actually). It might be the perfect trial for me as I am not sure if a cruise would be my thing but I could probably do three days to check it out 😀 How does it work with passport control on the cruise if you’re going to Mexico?

Gorgeous sunset! I’m impressed that they have a club for teens that’s obviously interesting enough for them that they prefer it.

I lived in Southern California for a while and had quite a few friends who went on this cruise. They all loved it and reading this now makes me understand why! It sounds like a great break from things. And I have been to Ensenada which is a good place to spend the day!

We have friends who have done this cruise but we never have tried one. I think a short one like this would be a good introduction. Not having to continually pack and unpack as you move from place to place sounds inviting, and so many dining and entertainment options. Hmmm…..

It always blows my mind how much can get packed into these ships! They truly are entertainment destinations on the move! Awesome guide for the Carnival cruises.

I absolutely love the sunsets one can capture from a cruise! The Carnival Imagination cruise looks pretty awesome and it is nice that they had a teen’s club – that kept your teenager entertained! I love cruises – especially the pools, the dining options and the activities on board. Good that you also went to explore the city when the cruise was docked on port even though you had visited Ensenada earlier – many people do not explore the city and choose to stay on board!

A short cruise is just what I may need to get over my cruise hangup. Somehow I have a feeling it would be too ‘tied-down’ as compared to a land trip. So much food on board!

I have been wanting to take these short cruise. We love cruising and it is such an easy and affordable way to getaway for the week. I’d actually like to do the one that stops at Catalina as well.

Los Angeles

weekend cruises ensenada

Los Angeles is the second-most populous city in the United States, after New York City, and the most populous city in the Western United States. With an estimated population of four million, Los Angeles is the largest and most populous city in the state of California and the cultural, financial, and commercial center of Southern California. Nicknamed the "City of Angels" partly because of its name's Spanish meaning, Los Angeles is known for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, and sprawling metropolis. The city is also one of the most substantial economic engines within the nation, with a diverse economy in a broad range of professional and cultural fields. Los Angeles is also famous as the home of Hollywood, a major center of the world entertainment industry. A global city, it has been ranked 6th in the Global Cities Index and 9th in the Global Economic Power Index. The Los Angeles combined statistical area also has a gross metropolitan product of $831 billion, making it the third-largest in the world, after the Greater Tokyo and New York metropolitan areas. Los Angeles hosted the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics and will host the event for a third time in 2028.

Santa Catalina

weekend cruises ensenada

Just off the coast of Southern California is an island that looks much like California did two hundred years ago, a wilderness of oak, cactus, and sage, an island with secluded coves surrounded by ocean with lush kelp forests and abundant sea life. This is Santa Catalina Island, a wilderness preserved for all to enjoy. Yet, Catalina has all the accommodations and recreational activities of a modern beach resort.

weekend cruises ensenada

Hey, there's more to this town than it just being the finish line for the annual Newport-Ensenada Race! The City of Ensenada has completed a total renovation of Primera, the main street downtown. Enjoy a stroll down the cobblestone sidewalk complete with outdoor cafes, interesting shops, strolling musicians and street vendors. The malecon (harbor boardwalk) renovation was completed last year and provides a beautifully landscaped walk along the harbor front to the Ventana Del Mar Plaza with its huge Mexican flag. From there, you can look across the rio at the new small craft harbor nestled in the middle of the new cruise ship docks. It will be interesting to watch the progress on this new endeavor. The story is that in order to expand the cargo port on the north side of the harbor, the developers had to relocate the passenger ships' dock and provide some type of recreational asset for the city. It looks to be a good solution. Ensenada is also a swell place to take possession of your new boat (more on that later), get a new bottom job for your old boat or set as your destination for an extended coastal cruise, a fun weekend road trip or the start of some long distance cruising! The people of Ensenada are trying hard to improve their city, both for turistas, a big part of their income and for themselves and their families. We have seen improvements which are good, and yet some loss of the "Mexico-ness" in some of the tourist areas. We have met a lot of the residents and business people and want to thank them for their hospitality. As visitors, it is our obligation to live up to the Bienvenidos and the Mi Casa es Su Casa that have been extended to us.

San Diego inundated as rains bring city’s wettest January day on record

SAN DIEGO — More than a month’s worth of rain fell here on Monday, causing widespread, dangerous flooding in the city’s urban core. It was San Diego’s wettest January day on record and ranked in the top five wettest days for any time of year since 1850.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria declared a state of emergency Monday afternoon. Areas south of the city were hit particularly hard, and an evacuation center was established for those displaced by flood damage. The wild weather closed numerous roads and schools, and disrupted transit routes. The city’s central library and its police headquarters were also shuttered for the day because of flooding. While there were no reported fatalities as of Monday evening, footage posted online showed submerged cars, as well as vehicles being carried away by floodwaters.

Two to three inches of rain fell in three hours, according to Alex Tardy, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in San Diego. The intense rains caused tributaries to the San Diego River to overflow, sending debris into the river. The river exceeded its flood stage of 10 feet, cresting at just over 11 feet — flooding nearby sports fields and parking lots and submerging major river crossings. A flood warning was in effect until late Monday.

“This is significant rainfall anywhere, but 2-3 inches in three hours is going to rank up there with probably a 50- to 100-year type flood,” Tardy said in an online update.

The day began with a harrowing morning commute and numerous accidents on freeways amid the downpours. Around 9:30 a.m., San Diego residents received a wireless alert for a flash flood warning that covered much of the county. “This is a dangerous and life-threatening situation,” the message read. “Do not attempt to travel unless you are fleeing an area subject to flooding or under an evacuation order.”

PRELIMINARY records are trickling in for San Diego. SO FAR today, we are at the 5th wettest day on record since 1850 and have surpassed the wettest day in January history. We'll have to see if we record any more rainfall before midnight! #CAwx pic.twitter.com/IQ42yCd4SR — NWS San Diego (@NWSSanDiego) January 23, 2024

As the rain intensified, city streets began to flood along the harbor, in low-lying urban neighborhoods and in beach communities.

There were reports of water rescues across the county, mainly for drivers caught on flooded roads, along with hundreds of rescues from homes, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

The San Diego Trolley cut rail service to downtown because of inundated routes.

“Due to severe rain, Downtown is flooded. Most trolley service is suspended or there is minimal service,” the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System wrote on its website Monday morning. Some service had been restored by afternoon, but other transit routes were closed or rerouted due to flooding on the San Diego River in Mission Valley, northeast of the city center.

Flooding continues across the San Diego metro this afternoon. Here are some photos from Fashion Valley, where several feet of water remains over area roadways. Curious to see how much rain fell near you over the past 3 days? Check out this link: https://t.co/UAtQmHTkpx #CAwx pic.twitter.com/vIHUL100i5 — NWS San Diego (@NWSSanDiego) January 22, 2024

The intense storm helped to pull the city out of precipitation deficits for this season. San Diego is now running above normal for the water year, which began Oct. 1. As of just last week, much of Southern California had only received about 25 to 50 percent of its normal rainfall.

On Monday, the 2.70 inches that fell in San Diego in eight hours exceeded its January average of 1.98 inches. Some spots saw close to 4 inches.

Monday’s deluge was part of a storm system that brought rain and snow to the state over the weekend. The storm intensified over San Diego as a deep layer of moisture converged with a disturbance in the upper atmosphere.

Despite a strong El Niño in the tropical Pacific Ocean, most of California has been running behind on rainfall, with snowpack well below average, mainly due to a lack of bigger storms and atmospheric rivers, combined with warmer temperatures.

We’re in danger of falling off a ‘snow loss cliff.’ Here’s what that means.

Studies have shown that climate change is causing more intense precipitation in the United States, with more rain falling in a single day, because a warmer atmosphere can hold more water.

Confidence is increasing that a major pattern change could bring stronger storms, along with heavy rain and mountain snow, to California at the end of the month, after a brief warm and dry period later this week.
