GLASSJAW's first 30th anniversary show: See video and setlist

Glassjaw are celebrating 30 years of "making things" with five special shows to close out 2023. Last night (December 20th), they played the first of the bunch at the Observatory in Santa Ana, California, where the Long Island post-hardcore vets ripped through a whopping 24-song(!) setlist that covered every inch of their discography.

They played large portions of their two classic albums, Worship & Tribute and Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence , five tracks off Material Control , and several other deeper cuts.

The biggest surprise of the night was when Glassjaw pulled out "Black Nurse," a song from their 2011 Coloring Book EP that they hadn't played live since 2014.

It made for an exciting start to these highly anticipated shows, and above and below you can check out video from throughout the night, as well as the full setlist, courtesy of Setlist.fm .

Glassjaw will continue the 30th anniversary festivities tonight (December 21st) in Los Angeles, and then travel back East for a December 28th gig in Chicago and then a two-night stint in Brooklyn on the 29th and 30th.

To further commemorate three decades of Glassjaw, Revolver and our sister brands BrooklynVegan and Alternative Press have teamed with the band for a deluxe photo book that includes oral history of Glassjaw as told by the people who and the places that influenced the band.

In addition, Revolver has newly pressed five of Glassjaw's greatest works to limited-edition vinyl, packaged together as The Playable Collection . Quantities of the vinyl and the book are both extremely limited, and you can order yours at Revolver' s shop .

Glassjaw is an American post hardcore band formed in 1993 by vocalist Daryl Palumbo and guitarist Justin Beck from Long Island, New York, U.S.

After meeting at summer camp Daryl Palumbo and Justin Beck played their first show as Glassjaw in 1994. The band was strongly Influenced by their membership in other bands, including Beck’s Jewish straight-edged metalcore band Sons of Abraham, and Palumbo’s straight-edged XbustedX. Whilst playing the local hardcore scene, Glassjaw’s line-up changed frequently. Earlier releases included the EP “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” in 1997, and 2000’s debut album “”Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence”.

The album showed off Glassjaw’s powerful and aggressive guttural vocals - dealing with uncomfortable topics such as Palumbo’s Crohn’s disease - and has often been cited as a milestone in post-hardcore. Its follow-up “Worship and Tribute” released by Warner Bros. Records in 2002 was engineered and mixed by Mike Fraser and was a more mature album, with influences as far reaching as Anthrax and The Cure.

With Palumbo experiencing a relapse with his Crohn’s disease as well as performing with his new group Head Automatica, Glassjaw went on a indeterminable hiatus, in which time band members Todd Weinstock, Dave Allen and Larry Gorman were all fired from the band. A couple of years later in 2005 with Manuel Carrero returning on bass after five years, and Durijah Lang filling in on guitar, Glassjaw played three shows at Farmingdale, New York’s The Downtown.

In 2007 the band played a one-off show at the Carling Academy Brixton, in London, England and a warm-up show at the Camden Barfly a day earlier, proving Glassjaw still has life in them. Following headline shows in Southern California, U.S. and a bunch of headline slots at festivals including Saints & Sinners, the band began releasing snippets of their new material.

After a series of teasing single releases including “(You Think You’re) John F*cking Lennon” and “All Good Junkies Go To Heaven” Glassjaw announced the upmcoming release of an EP and LP. The singles were later revealed to feature on the EP “One Color Green (The Singles)” released on 1/11/11. “One Color Green (The Singles)” has been followed up by the “Coloring Book” EP and Glassjaw continue to tour extensively.

Live reviews

What can be said about Glassjaw that hasn’t been said already? One of the most influential hardcore bands for their role in innovating and perfecting the post-hardcore sound that began to hit its stride in the early 2000’s.

The band is spot on live, ripping through their music note for note as effortlessly as anything I’ve seen. Daryl Palumbo, one of two founding members that remain in Glassjaw, is as good a live singer as there is in the post-hardcore world. From his soaring high pitched vocals, to his eccentric dance moves during the band’s extended instrumental sections, Palumbo is an absolute joy to watch on stage.

I most recently saw Glassjaw at Reading in 2011, and I initially had a fear that perhaps the stage, and the moment, might be too big for them to handle but that initial fear was put to rest very quickly as soon as their trademark sound started bursting through those speakers. I don’t know if the other audience members shared my same fear, but if they did, their fears were certainly destroyed as well. In a crowd of tens of thousands, you would be hard pressed to find a single member of that audience that wasn’t in absolute awe of Glassjaw’s combined musicianship and showmanship.

Report as inappropriate

American post-hardcore outfit Glassjaw have been around longer than most give them credit for due to recent public interest gathering and further critical publicity. The group has always been known for their disputes inter-band and with their record label so despite them enjoying a two decade career, their studio album tally still remains at two. This does not seem to deter the fans though who continually follow the group around as away from the conflicts, you cannot deny this band's prowess as a live outfit.

It is an intense performance from the minute the first guitar kicks the venue into life. It is then dragged kicking and screaming through ninety minutes of the most extreme and chaotic post-hardcore music you can imagine with heightened guitar riffs and a thumping snare drum keeping everything in some form of order. It often descends into utter madness as Daryl Palumbo screams into his microphone with a suitably sweaty forehead yet the more insane the band allows itself to get, the more mental the fans react so its a pretty good two way system.

I will give them the benefit of the doubt seeing as it was the first show of the tour, but...

First four songs were played too slowly. Sad as they were 4 great songs. Then fifth song the pace picks up and they go into some spacey stuff from the last 2 EPs. Just when you think they will burn the place down with some classic jams...sets over.

3rd time I've seen this band and this was the most boring.

Chicago embarrassed me this night.

Glassjaw played an amazing set, Daryl didn't hold anything back.

What was the crowd doing?

Standing around like zombies at a house party.

If this is the reception they get every time they come out here, I'm not surprised they don't do more shows outside of the east coast.

Glassjaw was amazin the venue was great the crowed was a little roudy for my taste, in defense it was a glassjaw show. They were pushing so hard behind us they had to pull me up n i lost a shoe then escorted me out. It was still a show worth going i heart u daryl.

About Glassjaw

After 30 years, post-hardcore band Glassjaw is still not down for the count

Glassjaw vocalist Daryl Palumbo.

• Show more sharing options
  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Glassjaw vocalist Daryl Palumbo still has a hard time using the word “legacy” to describe his band’s contribution to the post-hardcore scene.

“There’s so much pomposity in saying ‘legacy’ when I already have a hard enough time accepting any sort of compliments or hearing that my band did anything significant,” he said.

”I get that we all have a legacy — like if you’re a criminal who dies in prison, that’s your legacy — but I never drank the Kool-Aid.”

And yet, 30 years after forming the band as teenagers in Long Island, N.Y., in 1993, Palumbo and co-founding guitarist Justin Beck continue to see their impact play out in packed mosh pits across the world whenever they decide to return to the stage.

This week, Glassjaw returns to a sold-out crowd at the Echoplex on Dec. 21 (with an additional show the night before at the Observatory in Santa Ana) to kick off a short tour celebrating its three-decade milestone.

The band’s first two full-length releases — 2000’s “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence” and 2002’s “Worship and Tribute” — shaped the early 2000s New York post-hardcore scene alongside bands like Quicksand and Thursday.

Palumbo’s emotionally raw yet skillful vocals, combined with Beck’s unconventional rhythms and guitar licks, created a heavy and visceral sound that added musical exploration and lyrical allegories to the rage and vitriol of hard rock.

While others stuck with power chords, simple rhymes and standard time signatures, Glassjaw has always been more of an art project for the duo rather than a commercial success.

“Glassjaw was just a very young, pretty suburban version of a lot of [New York hardcore bands], but it’s an honor whenever anyone tells us they’re a fan,” Palumbo says. “I love music, and I’m a fan of everything from rap to metal, and I love the changes that I’ve heard in hardcore. I don’t keep up as much on modern bands as I should, ” Palumbo says, though he said he’s proud to see bands like Turnstile that continue to push eclectic, hardcore-infused jams.

“ They’re very much considered hardcore, and they play to thousands of people at giant festivals without sacrificing any of their integrity, ” Palumbo said. “That didn’t exist when we were young, so it’s an honor that I could not possibly put into words to even be told that Glassjaw left a tiny dent on the face of this big ‘alternative’ universe we live in.”

Daryl Palumbo.

With the resurgence of hardcore and post-hardcore reaching a bigger (and younger) audience than ever before, members of Gen Z and beyond are discovering the genres’ influential bands and elevating them to new heights. For Glassjaw, which hasn’t been a full-time focus for any of its members since 2003, it means an expanding fan base even when Beck and Palumbo’s attention is elsewhere.

But it also means there are more distractions for Glassjaw to contend with than ever before. Beck spends his days running his band merchandise giant MerchDirect as it approaches its 25th year (and also looking at new business ventures), while Palumbo left New York for Florida and continues to work as an artist. He relaunched his poppier project, Head Automatica, earlier this year.

Although Glassjaw’s 30th anniversary tour is only five dates across three cities, that scarcity is also some of the appeal for the band’s fervent following. Despite their lasting impact (they spent much of 2022 on a sold-out tour celebrating the 20th anniversaries of their first two albums), Palumbo and Beck haven’t tarnished their legacy by watering down their discography with halfhearted cash grabs or inflated releases.

Since reaching the MTV2 audience in the early 2000s, Glassjaw has released only a trio of EPs (one of which is an iTunes-exclusive trio of B-sides from “Worship and Tribute”) and 2017’s “Material Control.”

Even without frequent new releases, Palumbo and Beck have always been insistent that Glassjaw isn’t going away. Since their brief hiatus for Palumbo to help manage his Crohn’s disease and focus on Head Automatica’s 2004 debut, “Decadence,” the two collaborators have performed at least a few shows (often one-off festivals) every nonpandemic year. Even their rotating cast of a rhythm section has stabilized a bit in recent years, with Chad Hasty not only performing with Glassjaw since 2015 but also sitting behind the kit for the Head Automatica reunion tour.

While it may seem to those on the outside like the future of Glassjaw is always in flux, Palumbo and Beck have been creatively “married” for long enough that it seems like only one of their deaths would prevent the band from hitting the stage once in a while.

“For Justin and I to have been as close as we are since we were literally children, it’s pretty crazy to see the things that we’ve done together,” Palumbo says. “We’re just a couple of dudes from New York who never took any of this too seriously. Glassjaw has existed for us way longer than it hasn’t, and it’s been 30 years of inside jokes and expecting things to all go wrong. I could be eating dinner with my family, but if you tell me I have to jump in and play a Glassjaw show, I could do it.”

Despite more than 20 years and a lot of emotions passing since the duo wrote the vast majority of Glassjaw’s live show catalog, some things haven’t changed. Beck is still the sensible businessman of the group, Palumbo is still the electrifying wild card, and both still carry the signature New York pessimism, sense of humor and passion that rings true regardless of generation.

“I still like the venom and passion that was in a lot of the old songs, but there is a level of disrespect and lack of couth that sometimes I don’t dig,” Palumbo says. “We don’t play certain songs live, because I don’t really need to be as venomous as I used to be. These days, I know how to harness my inner voice and use it as a tool. I can play with that anger and that venom without being fully led by my emotions. But Glassjaw will always remain ugly and edgy and irreverent. It’s heavy music. There’s never anything happy.”

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).
