Andriy Mykailovych Danylko (born 2 October 1973), better known as his drag persona Verka Serduchka, is a Ukrainian comedian, actor, and singer. He represented Ukraine in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 as Verka with the song "Dancing Lasha Tumbai", finishing in second place. He has sold over 600,000 records. He has appeared in films, most notably a cameo as Verka in the American comedy film Spy (2015). Andriy Mykhailovych Danylko was born to a working-class family in Poltava on 2 October 1973. His mother, Svitlana Volkova, came from the noble Khomentovsky family, who were friends with the artist Ilya Repin. In 1980, at the age of seven, he lost his father to lung cancer. Since childhood, he had a talent for drawing and music, and he entered art school in 1984. His talents were manifested in other areas as well; he was the captain of the KVN school team, played as a schoolboy for the CPTU No. 30 team, and performed annually on the stage in the summer children's camp. In addition, he became interested in theater and entered the local theater studio in the seventh grade, where he was engaged in a studio called Grotesque and was part of the theater group Compote. In 1991, he graduated from Poltava Secondary School No. 27, and later graduated from the Kyiv State College of Circus and Variety Arts.

‘Dancing Russia Goodbye’ with Ukrainian Eurovision star Verka Serduchka

The drag sensation brings her hyper-energetic stage show to the Warfield to raise charity funds and awareness.

Besides Abba and Celine Dion, the great Eurovision Song Contest has introduced some wonderful talent over its 67 years. Even, or especially, if the music is sometimes fabulously overdramatic or hilariously wacky , it’s always a terrific show. The friendly competition—which pits singers from European countries (plus Israel and Australia, for some reason) against each other in a marathon contest to see whose representative song is voted the best—is like a sparklier version of soccer/football: Rather than fighting things out on the battlefield, nations can indulge in some cathartic rivalry through a little razzle-dazzle and a lot of physical exertion.

But what happens when war intrudes on the proceedings? In 2022, after it invaded Ukraine, Russia was banned from Eurovision, and the Ukraine entry won. ( It was a fine song, too. ) In 2023, because the contest could not be held in the winning country, as was traditional, it was hosted by the runner-up’s home city of Liverpool. And one of the contests most memorable performers—fantastic drag entity Verka Serduchka , who represented Ukraine in 2007—was there to sing her eternal hit entry “Dancing Lasha Tumbai,” only now the lyrics were officially changed to “Dancing Russia Goodbye.”

Throughout the invasion, Verka has been a light for her country, performing in a Kyiv underground Metro station/bomb shelter , receiving an Award of Merit from Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, and keeping spirits up during the devastation as “the people’s anti-depressant.”

Now, Verka Serduchka and her band are touring for the first time since the invasion, and she’s coming to the Warfield, Sat/16, 8pm to raise money for the Help Heroes of Ukraine charity. The tour is called “Ukraine Will Win,” and the show is going to be wild. I got to squeeze in a few questions with Verka (aka comedian Andriy Mykailovych Danylko) as she is busy bringing breathless joy to the world.

48 HILLS We are so happy to be able to see you in San Francisco. How does it feel to be touring for the first time since the invasion started? 

VERKA SERDUCHKA It’s very difficult. I understand that people outside Ukraine are kind of tired of the topic of the war. So our goal is to remind them about it again while entertaining. We remind that we need help, we need weapons and funds. I talk about this in a satirical manner for the entire concert. For our people, who were forced to leave the country and now live all over the world, we are trying to bring back at least some kind of piece of the “old time.” We want to remind them about Ukraine, of their home, and that in the end, everything will be fine.

48 HILLS Tell us about what we can expect from a full Verka show. I’m already taking my vitamins so I can keep up with the energy.

VERKA SERDUCHKA It’s difficult to define the genre: it combines everything—music, humor, stand-up. Serduchka’s humor is a reaction to what is happening around her. But without tears, no matter how bad it is. Make fun and insult the enemy, and encourage our people—that is our style. Serduchka is declared an enemy in Russia and has been banned from entering Russia for 50 years .

VERKA SERDUCHKA is the Eurovision sensation: her iconic performance is considered by many to be one of the best in the history of the contest.

After decades on stage, her live show easily attracts crowds that number in the thousands in any major city of the post-Soviet territory (as it was in Kyiv recently). Verka also made a cameo in the 2015 20th Century Fox blockbuster "SPY" with Melissa McCarthy and Jude Law.

VERKA SERDUCHKA & BAND's first charity tour outside of Ukraine since the beginning of the war will also cover North America. The full band (over 20 people!) will rock Miami, Chicago, New York, Toronto, San Francisco and Los Angeles, in April of 2023.

The Eurovision hit, now permanently changed to "Dancing Russia Goodbye", will be presented as well, as it was first introduced in Kyiv's train station bomb shelter for the military, medics, and volunteers in June of 2022.

VERKA SERDUCHKA joins jury as 2024 Ukrainian Eurovision hopefuls battle to represent homeland

The organizers of Eurovision 2024 ’s National Selection revealed the jury members chosen by Ukrainian voters on the Diia app, public broadcaster Suspilne reported on Jan. 21.

The trio includes Andriy Danylko (VERKA SERDUCHKA), Eurovision 2016 winner Jamala , and Bez Obmezhen band frontman Serhiy Tanchynets, with 43.79%, 23.62%, and 12.42% of the vote, respectively.

A total of 720,000 Ukrainians participated.

Tanchynets joins the jury for the first time, while Jamala, the most experienced member, has chosen Ukraine’s representative six times.

The final, featuring 11 candidates, is on Feb. 3, with Dmytro Shurov as the music producer.

Hosts are Timur Miroshnichenko, Yulia Sanina, and Vasyl Baidak. Bookmakers favor Alyona Alyona & Jerry Heil’s “Teresa & Maria” at 58%. Mélovin, Anka, Yagody, and Yaktak also compete.

The final, on Feb. 3, will be a TV concert, viewable on the Diia app, UA:Culture, Eurovision Ukraine YouTube channel, and other platforms.
