The Verve 3’s benefits from the smooth and efficient gearing provided by Shimano’s Acera components. Both the front and back derailleurs are Acera as well as the shifters. Trek has downgraded the front crank to a 2-speed ring but put a 9-speed Shimano HG200 cassette on the rear, with 11-36 cogs. This gives the rider 18 gears overall with the added range provided by the extra-large 36t rear cog.

Hydraulic Disc Brakes

Trek has also decided to go with Shimano in the braking department this time around. Shimano’s MT200 hydraulic disc brakes are a firm favorite amongst hybrid and MTB riders alike. They provide great grip, instant reaction time, and no slippage even in wet weather.

Bontrager Hardcase Wheels

Bontrager’s Hardcase Ultimate tires are the real deal when it comes to tackling hazardous city streets. These things will carve through rubble or broken rocks without trouble and should even keep you safe against glass shards or small nails. It’s built from tough, reliable components that are simple to clean and repair, making maintenance an easy task for new riders. It doesn’t have the suspension required for heavy off-road riding but it does have extra-large tires to absorb the shock of small rocks and bumpy roads. This makes it a decent bike for riding on dirt tracks in parks or along country lanes.

Shimano Groupset

Hydraulic disc brakes

What Can Be Better?

It’s hard to find any cons about those bikes, and we really couldn’t find anything major. If you are willing to sacrifice the speed and ease of riding, you might want to swap the rigid fork to a front suspension with at least 50mm travel.

Another not-so-good fact about these bikes is that they look really nice and glossy, which means you have to take good care of it by not getting the frame scratched. We also recommend investing in a solid bicycle lock too as this bike simply won’t get unnoticed!

It is almost impossible to fit a front rack on the verve 3. There’s only a mid fork eyelet, and the fork is too wide for the little options there are for mid-fork mounting front racks.

A friend bought a Verve 1in black. It is labeled as a “1” yet it has much up-graded components. It’s more like a “3”. It was purchased and put to together by Trek employees. Is this possible?

Trek dub the FX and FX Sport ranges as their ‘anywhere, anytime fitness bike’ as opposed to just being a commuting bike with a performance edge. Flat bars and a more relaxed, upright geometry point to its urban riding purpose but it would not look out of place on more characterful bike paths and longer, more varied rides.

As the name-change suggests, there is a dividing point in the range with the FX 1, FX 2 Disc, and FX 3 Disc more on the commuting side of the equation looking at their spec sheet. Even then, the difference between them is vast enough to make it worth serious consideration which is best for your needs.

At the top-end, however, those with the FX Sport moniker throw in Shimano’s mid-range road groupsets and a carbon frame. The subsequent range of gears, smooth shifting, and compliant ride is deserving of something sportier than just the commute. Performance levels are right at the top of what you would expect from a flat-barred bike; a mid-point for riders using two wheels for more than commuting but not yet ready for, or requiring, a fully-fledged road bike.

Starting with the entry-level FX range, the FX 1, FX 2 Disc and FX 3 Disc are all built around an Alpha Gold Aluminum frame. Alpha Aluminum is Trek’s innovative aluminum lay-up, which has been built to offer more compliance without reducing the stiffness-to-weight and affordability favored in alloy frames. Alpha Gold sits between Alpha Silver and Alpha Platinum, with the end result supposed to reduce fatigue over longer distances. Sleek welding keeps looks sharp too, particularly as all frames in the range boast internal cable routing.

The choice of forks varies as you climb the range though, with steel on the FX 1, alloy on the FX 2, and carbon thereafter, including the FX 3. If your target is predominantly commuting, carbon is unnecessary and the durability of the other two should take precedence. Carbon, however, improves the compliance through the front of the bike and serves up sharp handling and lightweight too.

On the FX Sport models, that carbon fork is paired with an Alpha Aluminum frame on the FX Sport 4 and an OCLV carbon frame on the FX Sport Carbon 4, FX Sport 5, and FX Sport 6. OCLV is Trek’s patented carbon lay-up process, which looks to improve the durability of its carbon frames. Other tech passed down from higher-end models includes the IsoSpeed decoupler. 

By allowing the seat tube to flex independently of the top tube, road buzz is smoothed significantly, without impacting on the bike’s rigidity and pedaling efficiency. Road racing legend Fabian Cancellara used IsoSpeed-equipped bikes to tackle the cobbles of Paris-Roubaix, so it should ramp comfort up to noticeable levels on anything the FX Sport is likely to tackle.

All frames in the range are DuoTrap compatible, allowing wireless integration with your bike computer or smartphone from a sensor in the chainstay. Trek have also looked to save time and maintenance with the 3S chain keeper. It is a very small touch, but a further testament to Trek’s attention to detail.

The groupsets clearly highlight the expected usage of each model, with the FX 1, FX 2, and FX 3 all wearing components from Shimano’s entry-level urban ranges. Shimano Altus, Shimano Tourney, and Shimano Acera are combined, with the FX 1 and FX 2 featuring triple cranksets for more gear options. The FX 1 uses rim brakes – though a disc version is available – and other bikes in the series come with hydraulic discs.

Step up to the FX Sport range, however, and the components step up too. Both the FX Sport 4 and FX Sport 5 wear Shimano Tiagra and the FX Sport 6 features Shimano 105. The exception to the rule is the FX Sport Carbon 4, with Shimano’s gravel-specific GRX group to highlight its off-road capability. It further reiterates Trek’s claim of an ‘anywhere, anytime’ bike.

On the FX 1 and FX 2, it is Bontrager Connection hoops, on the FX 3, FX Sport 4 and FX Sport Carbon 4 you get Bontrager Tubeless Ready Disc wheels and on the FX Sport 5 and FX Sport 6 the Bontrager Affinity Discs.

It is standard fare, from the entry-level end of Bontrager’s vast range, and whether you feel the need to upgrade will center on your riding intentions. For the FX 1 and FX 2, the wheels are basic at best but you do get Bontrager’s H2 reflective hybrid tires with them. They include reflective sidewalls and are built to blend durability, smooth rolling, and grip.

Again, the Tubeless Ready Disc wheels are the basic version of a range which stretches as high as the elite-level Aeolus hoops. The FX 3 uses H2 Hard-Case Lite rubber, while the FX Sport 4 and FX Sport Carbon 4 use R1 Hard-Case Lite. As indicated by the name, the H2 is built with hybrid bikes in mind, while the R1 is more aimed at road riding. Both feature Hard-Case puncture protection for durability, however.

Finally, the FX Sport 5 and FX Sport 6 step things up a little, with the Bontrager Affinity Disc-Ready wheels and R1 and R2 Hard-Case Lite tires respectively. As with all bikes, however, upgrading the rolling stock will make a big difference to your ride. Like many Trek bikes, the Alpha 1.2 features an aluminum frame. This lends to the overall lighter weight, and sets it in great company with its Trek brethren as sturdy bikes that will hold up to whatever Mother Nature can dish out.

The frame does rise at the front end, which does create a more comfortable upright riding position. This is a simple tweak that seasoned riders will appreciate, and can provide a helpful learning experience if it’s your first time on the trail.

As a result, it is an acceptable type of suspension. When riding in a normal mountain, the fork does not have a soft or hard damping effect, making it more difficult to bottom out. Trek’s fork performs better in all of the effects observed.

Shimano’s drivetrain has the same configuration as the drivetrain of many cheap mountain bikes nowadays, and it performs well in terms of sturdiness and riding efficiency, as well as responsiveness.

At going on 59 with a disability, I purchased this bike 2nd hand. It is well worth it. Hadn't ridden in years. This bike is easy to shift, lightweight and has everything I need in a bike, with the exception of a better seat. It wasn't the right fit and purchased one that fit better. It is quiet and smooth when shifting. I wish I had found out earlier that it's worth purchasing a Trek over a Schwinn, which was my former favorite bike. It is a misty-greenish color. I have never taken it off road. I ride on paved trails with slight hills.

The seat is so-so.

I have had the pleasure of riding a Trek 7200 Hybrid since 2007 and have enjoyed every ride taken ! We just passed 25,000 miles this week, in fact, heading to my 30,000 mile goal for this superior bike by end 2020. The bike rides very smoothly and handles beautifully under road and mild off road conditions. I'd seriously consider refurbishing this machine at the 30,000 mile mark rather than buy new given the nearly perfect "fit" for my riding style ! The Trek 7200 is my recommendation for anyone, beginner or seasoned rider, who is looking for both comfort and performance in a bike. I am a delighted customer for for the Trek 7200 Hybrid !

I've replaced the rear rim three times so far, with an average mileage of ~7,000 miles per rim. It's aluminum and prone toward cracking at the spoke connection as I understand from the shop pros. Otherwise maintenance has been reasonably minor and normal given the overall mileage and age of the bike. The cracked seat post last week was a true surprise and could have been a real inconvenience if I'd been further than the three miles from home that I was then. I'll put that one on age and mileage though.

I have had this bike for 10+ years, have ridden thousands of miles on it, have never had it tuned up (while I probably should), have pulled all 4 of my children with it over the years in several bike trailers, which the bike has outlasted. I currently ride it 4 or 5 times a week and go between 7 and 20 miles pulling my almost 3 year old daughter. She loves the long rides through the forest preserves near my home (paved trails). I am looking to get a new bike because while this bike is a work horse and has never failed me, I do get burned by all the guys on road bikes (when I am riding alone). I want something where I can keep up with the faster bikes when I ride by myself but have no plans to get rid of this bike for pulling my daughter. It still shifts great, brakes work great, and I have no issue riding up huge hills pulling a trailer. My one complaint would be that the frame only enough room for one water bottle but not really an issue as I just throw more water in the trailer :)

Great upright fit, comfortable, never needed any shop servicing in 12 years, easy cruising on paved and gravel trails, great components.

A little heavy compared to current bikes.

Original owner from 2004. On long rides or daily commuting, just a great bike. Just like every bike, make sure you're fitted properly at a good dealer. Replaced the tires yesterday for the first time after 2000 miles. Took 30 minutes. Go to YouTube and EBay and save $50.00. First changes or adjustments of any type in 12 years. Would buy a Trek again and again. Ride on people. :-)))

Sturdy, well built manual machine. Very comfotable and modular, provided you understand that when you buy any bicycle, you just buy the raw material to custmise your finnish.

HEAVY bicycle.

I bought this sample new some 7 years ago, and it is likely to be in use by me, at least another 8, or 9 years, when aging (now I am 61) may force me to buy a much lighter one, paying a lot of money. I use bikes everyday for going to work, since 45 years ago. This one uphold a front wheel motor. I have exchanged the saddle some day, and disassembled the headset, on behalf of a short lasting concubine. Afterwards I owned an electric bicycle for some 8 months. till I realized that if I continue lazy I will die earlier. Back to the FX 7200, my headset needed a part or two I extracted some day in the past. I went to the city Trek branch (Natania, Israel), who look at me as a sort of paleo man, wanted I leave them the bicycle to update the full headset to the last cry of mode, or I buy a cheapo bike they offered me. Meaning I had a sort of trashy bike to get rid of. But from reading the internet, from my additional incursions into eBay, I knew these folks in Israel had no idea of the worldwide availability of older bikes, parts, youtube how to videos, etc. It took me to days of work to understand the job myself, and thus from the abovementioned folks I bought some parts. My fx is running again like a fly, and will do for years to come. Now all parts are at their mid age flourishing like a pair of used leather shoes. FX 7200 is the choice of my common sense.

Durable. Nothing breaks and I've never been stranded anywhere. I did have one accident, but fortunately my left hand, arm and leg protected the bike from getting scratched.

Maybe it's my weakness. I'm 5' 8"--the frame is a little tall for me. However, I do enjoy the high riding position.

I've added some accessories (bottle cages, trip computer, tool bag) but the mechanicals are pretty much stock. Very reliable, simple, easy to work on. I'm big on routine preventive maintenance. Bought it when I was 59 and now I'm 69. In the early years with this bike, I did maybe 30 miles a day, 62 on a Saturday. I've slowed down some but still get in some good rides in our East Texas boonies. When I tell my non bike friends what I have invested in it, their response is always the same "but I can buy a bike at WalMart for $99". Once they ride with me, they figure it out in a hurry.

It was able to fit me like a glove. Comfort, Durability.

I really couldn't find a weakness. The brakes had to be adjusted more then usually.

This is the best bike I have ever had. I am 6'3" 225. Most bikes can't handle me. This one could and still had more room to play with.

This is one tough bike. It is extremely durable and even though mine is regularly ridden and is nearing 8 years of age it still looks and rides like new.

The seat is too hard.

This is a perfect bike for the city, a bike that can easily cope with mounting gutters, potholes and gravel, but is light enough to be nimble and ridden with speed. This is easily the best bicycle I've owned.

From blueprint to reality

Metallic materials can’t be moulded like composites. Creating the unique shapes that make for great ride characteristics requires forming, or an actual manipulation of the tube material to take on a desired shape. Holding a sincere belief that materials as difficult to work with as aluminium can in fact be manipulated into something exceptional, Trek has created unique Alpha Aluminium frame designs that are so much more than tubes of aluminium welded together. We go a step further in our willingness to experiment, and the difference is noticeable in performance, comfort and aesthetics. By stretching aluminium alloy to its absolute capacity, Trek engineers are able to achieve a two-fold benefit: reduced weight and reduced stiffness in key areas that produce a harsh ride quality.

What is hydroforming?

Proven effective in the world of high-end performance cars, hydroforming is the process of injecting fluid into a cylindrical frame tube to manipulate it into a more beneficial shape. Hydroforming allows Trek engineers to bring complex aluminium frame designs, especially those with advanced aerodynamic properties, from the drawing board to the production line. Ask any engineer, and they’ll tell you that the quintessential engineering shape is a circle. Alloy frame tubes begin as cylinders because this shape allows for an equal load distribution and stiffness that is uniform throughout the tube. Because circular shapes lack in aerodynamic properties, however, Trek employs hydroforming to manipulate the aluminium alloy tubes into performance shapes that retain strength while also adding to the frame’s aerodynamic properties and ride quality.

Seamless transitions

Trek’s advanced Alpha Aluminium frames feature Invisible Weld Technology, a revolutionary welding process that decreases weight and increases structural integrity, while also delivering finely tuned welds that are as aesthetically pleasing as they are strong. Let’s be honest: Looks matter. A premium road bike requires clean, esteemed aesthetics that are not blemished by sloppy, highly visible weld material at every joint. Invisible Weld Technology produces welds that are just that – invisible. By forming pressurised tube shapes that fit together perfectly, Trek’s engineers make it easier not only to weld tubes into frames, but dramatically reduce the amount of weld material required to do so. Less weld material allows for larger continuous surface areas on the frame, which increases strength and durability. Using less weld material also allows production engineers to control every gram of material that goes into the bike, which results in frames that are lighter than many carbon fibre alternatives. The spiraling 246m high Evolution Tower is located on plots 2-3 of Moscow-City high-rise business district on Presnenskaya Embankment of Moscow river. New multi-function center occupies the territory of 2.5ha in area, 2ha of which is a landscaped terraced civic plaza, the integral part of the new city piazza, the central open public space of Moscow-City business downtown.

ivic plaza includes 10m high ceremonial stairs (leading from embankment and pedestrian Bagration Bridge to the higher terraced levels) as well as landscaped areas with green lawns, trees, water features, travellators and feature lightboxes.

Under the piazza levels the 2-storey retail mall connects the Evolution Tower with metro station and pedestrian bridge over Moscow river, thus integrating the new development into the large Moscow-City district, the Europe's newest and most ambitious high-rise cluster (7 of 10 highest European skyscrapers ae located here), housing over 4 million square meters of office and retail areas with associated transport and engineering infrastructure.   

The Evolution Gallery mall houses food court and 6,000m2 family entertainment and educational center for various children activities (the first center of that kind in Moscow). 

The 82,000m2 office tower has 52 levels rotated 3 degrees each floor with overall twist reaching 156 degrees clockwise. With world’s largest innovative cold-bent glazing the tower façade provides seamless floating reflection that rotates the panoramas of Moscow skyline vertically, where the reflected clouds moving up enhance the dynamic visual impact of the twisted tower, an unprecedented optical effect in the world architecture.  The Crown with supporting steel structure made of two twisted arches provides the helipad at the very top as well as the open observation roof decks at Levels 51-52 featuring the best panoramas of Moscow riverside with views towards the historical center. 

From the very beginning the developer and architects have set an ambitious task to create a recognizable and symbolic tower, the new icon of contemporary Moscow.  The sculptural DNA-shaped twisting tower symbolizes the evolution spiral with the white façade ribbon wrapping over the roof in a form of 90-degree twisted infinity symbol, which speaks of philosophical concept of evolution and celebrates the development of human civilization. From spiraling onion domes of St. Basil to the iconic Tatlin Tower concept the Russian architecture was obsessed with idea of spiral. The simple and innovative design was based on principles of twisting square-shaped floor plates with vertical structural RC frame supported by a central core and 8 columns with continuous beams and 4 spiraling columns at the corners. 

The proposed structural scheme with cantilevered continuous RC beams and cantilevered floor slabs  picking up the overhangs from the twisted floor plates appeared to be simple, efficient and economical. The complex sculptural tower façade envelope was built using the innovative cold-bent glazing with flat double glazed units cold-formed in 3D within the aluminum frame under its own weight to avoid stepping in geometry. This approach appeared to be both more energy-efficient and more cost-efficient solution in comparison to the stepped curtain wall units previously applied in some twisted unitized facades. 

The multifunctional architectural glass by Guardian significantly reduces the solar gain whilst providing the double glazed unit thermal performance equal to standard triple glazed unit normally used in Moscow to withstand harsh winter conditions. The use of innovative TWIN elevators by ThyssenKrupp saved 2 shafts within the core (10 TWINs instead of 12 double-deckers in the original concept) and contributed to the overall project sustainability with lesser power consumption per passenger. Other sustainable design features include green roofs over the retail mall and integrated coil floor heating under landscaped civic piazza levels using the return water in winter to melt the snow and ice for the safety of pedestrians. The reinforced concrete formwork by PERI, including self-climbing ACS formwork specially designed for the twisting corner columns, allowed to achieve the impressive speed of RC frame construction of 6 days per floor due to perfect site logistics by Renaissance Construction as main contractor. 

All innovative design solutions and optimizations secured the delivery of this fairly unique skyscraper within the project plan and almost within the budget of the standard ‘benchmark’ high-rise building. This turned out to be a major achievement of the design and construction teams. 

The organic twisting silhouette dominates on its background of extruded glass towers greatly contributing into the overall composition of the high-rise Moscow-City cluster. The development delivered a significant open public space on the landscaped roof of the retail mall, thus providing the perfect mix of business uses with public and social activities of the civic plaza and the mall with its food court and core family entertainment function. The synergy of that mix with large underground car-park complemented by the direct link to the metro station and pedestrian bridge as means of main public transportation secured the successful project completion with the recent entire tower acquisition. Bold shape and timeless aesthetics as added values brought by its unique architecture materialized in a commercial success of this project with the tower being fully acquired for corporate headquarters even in the context of oversupply in the Moscow office market. The outstanding quality of architecture and its fine detailing, state of the art building services and communications of Class A office Tower together with the highest level of transport accessibility  (direct access to metro station from the lobby, large car-parking, proximity to boat pier and helipads) make this property very attractive for tenants and visitors. The beautiful riverside panoramas from offices are complemented by green roof and water features of the large 2ha terraced civic piazza as the main recreational outdoor space with direct link from the office tower lobby. 

The highest quality of façade cladding, glazing, vertical transportation and MEP equipment from leading European and international suppliers provided the truly Class-A office environment with the luxury of minimalist spirit in the architecture of the new landmark on the Moscow skyline. Even before its completion the sculptural spiral of Evolution Tower, more often appearing in commercials, posters and magazines, became a new icon for modern Moscow as the symbol of its business ambitions and fast development. The Evolution Tower also became the monument to the courage of its developer (Snegiri Group) and investors, who built the great deal of trust with architects, engineers and contractors by investing their efforts and funds in a challenging adventure of designing and building the unique and innovative skyscraper for the capital of Russia.
