Found: The Best Travel-Sized Toiletries The Internet Has To Offer

Packing up your beauty routine shouldn’t be stressful.

Product, Skin care, Material property, Cream, Brand,

Vacation should be something that you anticipate with nothing but excitement, but when it comes to preparing for it, that’s rarely the case. After all, finding a way to pack everything you need to keep up with your regular skin and hair care routine can be challenging—especially if you’re only using a carry-on.

Not to worry, though. Walmart (yes, Walmart!) has an amazing section of travel-sized toiletries. Whether you’re headed to Tulum for some R&R, Colorado to hike a 9er, or just need to shower at the gym post-workout, these 10 tiny products will keep you feeling like your normal self.

$9.99 L'Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Serum

L'Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Serum

We love the look of the perfect tan. But the process of achieving it? Not so much. Sitting out in the sun all day can damage your skin—especially if you ditched the SPF in hopes of scoring a deeper bronze. To stay sun-safe without losing that coveted complexion, pack this streak-free, no-fuss self-tanner.

$36.50 Clinique Moisture Surge Face Moisturizer

Clinique Moisture Surge Face Moisturizer

Finding a moisturizer that deeply hydrates your skin without weighing it down can be tricky, but this lightweight gel-cream option fits the bill. The 100 percent oil- and fragrance-free formula is made with hyaluronic acid and aloe leaf extract to help hydrate and soothe the skin.

$5.90 Bioderma Sebium H2O Micellar Cleansing Water and Makeup Remover

Bioderma Sebium H2O Micellar Cleansing Water and Makeup Remover

Just because you’re on vacation doesn’t mean you can slack off when it comes to removing your makeup. To help make the process as quick as possible, add a bottle of this micellar water to your toiletry bag.

The oil-free, vitamin E-rich formula is made with tiny balls of fatty acids called micelles that attract makeup, dirt, and debris from pores—without robbing your skin of moisture in the process.

$23.94 L'Oreal Paris Revitalift Derm Intensives Hyaluronic Acid Serum

L'Oreal Paris Revitalift Derm Intensives Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Hyaluronic acid  holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Since this particular HA is made with two different weights of the ingredients—a lighter one that dives deep into pores and a heavier one that sits on the surface of the skin—a single drop can plump fine lines from the inside out and vice versa. It also helps minimize the appearance of pores. Simply put: It will totally rejuvenate your skin.

$9.00 It's a 10 Miracle Leave-in Conditioner Plus Keratin

It's a 10 Miracle Leave-in Conditioner Plus Keratin

If your vacation includes dips in the ocean or pool or hours spent shade-less in the sun, you’ll want to bring a leave-in conditioner along for the journey. While many leave-ins are too large for air travel, this bestseller is just the right size.

Made with aloe leaf extract,  sunflower seed extract , and  hydrolyzed keratin , a few spritzes throughout the day can help strengthen and repair sun-damaged strands by smoothing the cuticle and infusing them with nutrients.

$8.97 Bare Republic Mineral SPF 50 Sport Sunscreen Stick

Bare Republic Mineral SPF 50 Sport Sunscreen Stick

Regardless of whether you’re heading to the sand or the slopes, sunscreen is a must. Instead of lugging around a large bottle (which, BTW, will likely get snagged by the TSA), bring along this convenient sport stick.

The mineral formula is reef-safe and offers SPF 50 coverage with 80 minutes of water resistance. And since it’s so tiny, it makes for really easy re-application—an absolute must whether you’re exploring on vacay or just out around town.

$4.47 Secret Freshies Invisible Solid Antiperspirant and Deodorant

Secret Freshies Invisible Solid Antiperspirant and Deodorant

Deodorant isn’t usually an issue when walking through security, but traditional tubes can take up unnecessary space. That’s why this sphere of antiperspirant is such a game-changer. It offers odor and wetness protection that can be reapplied in a jiff thanks to its purse-friendly size.

$1.08 Not Your Mother's Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray

Not Your Mother's Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray

No beach? No problem. With this mini salt spray you’ll be able to achieve beachy waves any time, any place. If you do find yourself along the coast, the texturizing spray can help perfect your fresh-off-the-beach hairdo.

$17.95 Shanty Travel Makeup Bags

Shanty Travel Makeup Bags

Skip the plastic baggie and opt for a set of these TSA-friendly clear plastic toiletry bags. The variety of sizes allow you to sort your toiletries by type to stay organized on your getaway (and every day after). Since they’re rectangular, they’ll make good use of every inch of your carry-on, unlike shapeless or round makeup bags.

$10.67 International Women's Premium 13 PC Assembled Kit, TSA Compliant

International Women's Premium 13 PC Assembled Kit, TSA Compliant

At the end of the day, if you simply don’t have the energy to stock your own toiletry bag and instead want to focus all your attention on the adventure ahead, do yourself a favor and buy this have-it-all grab bag.

The TSA-compliant kit, which features shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, deodorant, and more, fits easily into any carry-on, gym bag, or daypack, making it a must for those who live their lives constantly moving from point A to B.

Minimalist Travel Toiletries List for Women

What should be on your travel toiletries list as a female traveler? Well, every woman has their own take on what their essential travel items should be.

As a digital nomad who is frequently traveling, I have whittled down my own essential travel toiletries list, which I hope will be helpful for others preparing for their own trips.

My Travel Toiletries List

I’m somewhat of a minimalist by nature, so there’s actually little variation between what I keep in my toiletry bag on a regular basis and the items I pack for travel. In fact, my toiletry bag is always ready for travel – I can just grab it and go.

Updated: 2023. Originally published: 2019.

Women’s Hanging Travel Toiletry Bag

My toiletry bag is one of the few things that’s gone absolutely everywhere with me.

This toiletry kit was given to me as a gift about two decades ago, and I’m sure I’ll continue using it for many years to come. (It even made our Surprisingly Useful Gifts for Travelers list!)

Why is this the best toiletry bag over time?

– For one, it’s top quality . The material is super durable and waterproof.  – The material is also easy to wash out when spills happen. – It’s versatile . It can hang up or sit, roll up or lie flat. – The bottom compartment detaches , in case I need to further downsize my minimalist toiletries. – It’s not boring. Not a style I would have chosen for myself, but I love that it’s bold and fun .

Unfortunately, Fossil no longer makes these toiletry cosmetics bags. So I did some research on alternatives.

For a durable, high quality hanging toiletry bag , I highly recommend looking at REI. You might find cheaper options elsewhere, but REI brands are more dependable and likely to last much longer.

Like my own toiletry bag, the SCOUT Burrito has three compartments and is able to both hang from a hook or sit up on its own when rolled up.

One difference: the large compartment on the bottom does not detach.

Travel Essentials for Women

As I mentioned, essential travel items for me may be different for you. These are the important things I always keep in my toiletries kit, whether we’re traveling or not:

Main compartment:

– Round hair brush (I’ve had it since middle school!) – Waterproof mascara – Emani natural vegan lipstick – Mineral powder foundation with SPF – Schmidt’s Rose-Vanilla natural deodorant (more on my quest for an effective natural deodorant here ) – Blush and compact mirror (I mostly use it for the mirror) – Prescription medicine – I transfer this to my carry on when checking my bag – Bite splint/night guard (for TMJ/clenching teeth – obviously, this is not essential for everyone!)

Middle pocket:

– One nail polish (for touch ups) – Feminine pads (more depending on the timing) – Lactaid pills (for lactose intolerance) – Eye mask (I sometimes bring this in my carry on instead) – Nail file

Top see-through pouch:

– Preserve re-usable 100% recycled razor   – Hair ties and bobby pins – Scissors/trimmer set – Tweezers – Mack’s slim fit foam earplugs

Not pictured:

– Electric toothbrush, toothpaste, floss (not pictured because Jedd carries it. Lucky me!) – Advil (it stays in my carry-on/laptop bag)

Other Important Items Depending on the Trip

toiletries list for travel | Minimalist Travel Toiletries List for Women

Occasionally, I do add a few optional items, depending on whether I’m going on a weekend getaway vacation or a long-term trip. Destinations are also a factor – certain items are more useful in Southeast Asia or South America that aren’t necessary in Europe.

Those optional toiletry items include:

– Bug repellent (from heavy Deet spray to the milder Off Active or the alternative Picaridin lotion ) – Waterproof sunscreen (see reef-safe options here ) – Over-the-counter meds (may include anti-diarrheal, allergy meds, etc.) – A few bandaids – Travel size wipes – Small sewing kit – Change of earrings (if I’m attending a formal event) – Tampons – Compact nano-dry towel – Travel-sized squeeze bottle (if we need to bring our own shampoo) – Ear plugs

And here’s a checklist of a few remaining travel essentials for women to pick and choose from:

– Chapstick/lip balm – Q-tips – Menstrual cup – Curling or straightening iron – Blow dryer – Comb – Nail polish remover – Hand sanitizer – Moisturizer – Body lotion – Hair spray/gel – Mouth wash – Shaving cream – Face wash and other skin care – Body wash – Wash cloth/loofah – Glasses/Contacts & Contact solution – Shampoo & Conditioner – Facial wipes – Eyeliner/Eye shadow – Concealer – Other favorite beauty products

How to create your own minimalist toiletries packing list

There are two strategies you could take to make your toiletries checklist:

1) Use my list as a starting point. Add or subtract your own essential items as needed.

2) Lay out the products you use on a daily basis along with an empty toiletry bag. Pull out the items you absolutely need and pack them!

Some quick tips for downsizing and choosing toiletries

– Your hotel or other travel accommodations may provide shampoo, soap, hair dryer, and more. Consider leaving these behind. – You can buy comparable toiletries in almost any country, so if you leave out something you need, you can always buy it. – Pack multi-purpose products. For example: wipes that can be used for removing make-up, face scrub, and cleaning hands. – Aim to bring just the right amount of product for the length of your trip. Fill travel-sized containers from your products at home.

Taking toiletries on a plane: Packing tips

We typically like to check a bag each on most trips. In this case, it’s not a problem to pack any toiletries in checked luggage. Nevertheless, my toiletries are nearly all allowed in carry on bags (a.k.a. hand luggage) as well.

The big issue taking toiletries in a carry on bag is going through TSA airport security . Two main concerns are: 1) liquids 2) sharp objects

Containers with liquids, gels, pastes, or creams larger than 3.4 ounces must be packed in a checked bag. Yes, toothpaste is considered a liquid by TSA. Stick deodorants should not count as liquid if they’re solid or powdered.

For a short trip, you can simply get travel size toiletries and put them in a ziplock bag in your carry-on luggage. For a longer trip where you’ll need more supplies, pack toiletries in checked luggage or consider buying them at your destination.

Things like tweezers, nail clippers or mini scissors, disposable razors, etc. are usually fine to carry on. Check the TSA What Can I Bring? page to be sure.

A note about traveling with liquids

Because things bounce around when you travel, plus the cabin pressure changes during flights, liquid toiletries are prone to leak. We always reuse plastic Ziplock bags to ensure any messes are contained.

Another great trick is to put a small piece of plastic wrap over the mouth of bottles or tubes and secure the lid back on over it. This essentially creates a seal to prevent leaks, as long as the container isn’t over-full.

The 11 Best Mini-Sized Beauty Products, According to a Beauty Writer Who Travels All the Time

travel size toiletries home bargains ladies

Byrdie / Amelia Manley

Minis are really cute; whether it’s a toy car, a baby animal, or a doll-sized kitchen set, miniature items have a way of melting my heart every time. My favorite category of all within the “mini” genre is probably a dead-giveaway: makeup. I’ve spent hours in those dangerous check-out lanes of Sephora where exclusively-made miniature skincare, makeup, brushes, and sponges have been placed (brilliantly) for customers awaiting check-out. On several occasions, I’ve gone in for literally only one item, and ended up leaving with dozens of others because of a long check-out line; I just kept finding more of my favorite products in travel sizes.

Because I travel a lot, I dedicate a good amount of time to strategically packing. I usually bring an entire pharmacy with me because I never know what to expect from a foreign country’s drugstores or local shopping, lest I forget something. There’s also nothing worse for me than re-purchasing something I know that I already have at home. If you’re like me and you belong to the COO club (carry-on only), you’ve had your fair share of experiences with an overstuffed bag. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve had to sit on my Rimowa luggage, praying it doesn’t crack, just so that I could zip it into something shaped like an Oreo cookie (the fabric space-expanders spilling out everywhere).

After finding out that many brands make miniature versions of their beloved products, I started researching to see what else was out there. Since switching exclusively to minis for travel , my bags have gotten a lot lighter.

With travel season upon us, I decided to round up all of the best mini products. So, whether you’re packing for your trip to Mallorca, you want to try something new with less cost commitment, or you just love how cute miniature makeup looks on your vanity, I’ve rounded up all the fan-favorites here.

Final Verdict

We're giving top honors to the Augustinus Bader The Cream . Its innovative formula is packed with natural amino acids, vitamins, and molecules to help regenerate your body's own stem cells. It's also packed with great hydrating ingredients like aloe leaf, avocado, shea butter, and more, so it certainly lives up to its claim of replacing every skin product you need after cleansing.

Looking to cover up while you're on the go? Try the Nars Mini Radiant Creamy Concealer . It's great for adding highlight, contour, or medium to full coverage concealing without dryness or creasing.

What to Look for in Travel Size Beauty Products

Packaging materials.

Whether you're just tossing it in your bag for touchups or traveling on a plane, you'll want to make sure the product you're buying is made of up durable materials. It shouldn't pop open or break and spill all over your bag.

Application

While minis are compact and easy to pack when you need to travel light, always consider the product's application. If you have to pack extra tools for it, then it takes up more space than its cute small size. If you aren't positive what more will be needed for products, reference all-in-one makeup kits to review what you need to accompany assorted products.

You might find yourself distracted by the shiniest and most exciting products, but don't forget to purchase and pack the everyday items you need, too. Whether your staples include brow gel, sunscreen, or lip gloss, you'll want to have a mini-version of the things you rely on the most, not just the fun extras.

When looking to travel by air, you'll need to adhere to the TSA rules for carry-on cosmetics. You're allowed to bring a total of one quart-sized clear, resealable bag filled with products. Inside this bag, each item needs to be 3.4 ounces or less.

Provided you will use up whatever is contained in your travel-size toiletries, they are worth it. That's because you were able to carry them on rather than pay extra for a checked bag, which costs more. You'll want to recycle them instead of putting them in the trash to reduce your carbon footprint.

Travel-size toiletries last about the same amount of time as their full-size counterparts; it's dependent on how long that specific product lasts. Mascara can get dried out and exposed to bacteria , and should be replaced every few months.

The TSA is pretty strict about traveling with liquids, and because of that, its rules about what counts as a liquid err on the, well, solid side. Aerosols, pastes, creams, and gels are all liquids, so makeup products like mascara, foundation, eyeline r , moisturizer, and perfume are all considered liquid.

How long I’ve been using it: Since 2019; I use this one when I'm traveling with just a carry-on.

Why I like it : The Peak Design bag is water-resistant, making it easy to clean up any spills, and I like that there is a specific compartment for my toothbrush and another for my razor. Inside, there are a ton of small pouches to keep items organized. It’s my go-to for a long weekend trip.

3 products you’ll always find inside :  Cadence Capsules , my  Quip toothbrush , and  contact solution .

How long I’ve been using it: Nine months; it is the one I use when I'm checking a bag.

Why I like it : If I’m traveling for a week or more, I’ll bring Calpak’s clear cosmetic case in the large size. I’ll admit, I was overwhelmed by the size when it first arrived, but it does fit absolutely everything—toiletries, skincare, make-up, even my hairbrush, vitamins, and full-size contact solutions—and it’s nice to have everything in one place. Plus, the clear design means I can double-check that everything’s there at a glance.

How long I’ve been using it: Eight months

Why I like it : This floral toiletry bag is so functional and versatile: it works just as well to organize makeup products and tech accessories as it does toiletry essentials. I recently brought it with me on a weekend trip and I was so impressed with how much I could fit inside this seemingly small bag. I was able to keep my travel-size face wash and moisturizer laying flat inside, along with other must-haves like sunscreen and deodorant. I used the two elastic slip pockets to keep Q-tips and my contact lenses separate from everything else. I also utilized the thin slip pockets on the top of the bag for my go-to lip balm and lip liner. The bag is compact enough that it didn’t take up much room in my weekender bag, but still tall enough that some products can stand up straight inside, like my contact solution and small Vaseline tub. Bonus: It’s made of water-resistant fabric and features a top handle to easily carry it around.

3 products you’ll always find inside : I never travel without my  Supergoop! Unseen sunscreen ,  Vaseline , and a  travel-size CeraVe hydrating face wash .

How long I’ve been using it:  A year and a half

Why I like it:  There’s something about Ceremonia 's colorful "market" pouch that puts me in instant vacation mode. It’s more of a makeup bag than a traditional Dopp kit, with a single main zippered compartment and no internal pockets, but that’s why I love it. Well, that and the fact that it’s also very cute and handmade from upcycled materials. It has a spill-proof lining—ideal for throwing greasy sunscreen bottles and my smudgy Marvis toothpaste in—and can fit about a weekend’s worth of product, which is really all I need and tend to use anyway (even on longer trips). Did I mention it’s also a great beach bag companion?

3 products you’ll always find inside: Victoria Beckham's Future Lash , which gives the prettiest natural lift and rinses off with warm water; the  fragrance oil I wear every day; and extra  slip silk scrunchies , because you never know when one will vanish into the void.

How long I’ve been using it: 10 months

Why I like it:  The space inside surprised me the most. I travel very light, and that applies not only to my carry-on but my toiletries as well. I take only the necessities. The toiletry case comes with five individual pockets that line the interior which is surprisingly roomy; if that’s not enough, then I can always stack my toiletries on top of one another in the center. I’ll often worry about my toiletry bottles becoming loose and leaking onto my clothes, but the one time I did have a mishap my anxiety was quelled once I saw the bag kept it contained.

3 products you’ll always find inside:   Sol de Janiero Brazilian Bum Bum Cream ,  La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair UV SPF Moisturizer, and the  Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb Parfum in the travel-size bottle.

More Dopp kits we recommend

“I don’t own this bag yet, but I think I need to. I spotted it on Instagram, and it’s the exact type of Dopp kit I’ve been looking for. With toothbrush and razor holders, an interior mesh pocket, a side pocket, and even elastic straps to stick in Chapstick, mascara, or whatever, it feels like a super smart organizing system (especially in contrast to my current method of throwing everything haphazardly into a roomy  Baggu pouch ). I love that it’s water-resistant, and the squared-off shape makes so much sense among my packing cubes. I also think the Terra collection this bag is a part of, which includes earth-toned, rugged-ready bags with tons of straps and compartments, is what might finally get me into  Calpak luggage —this Dopp kit feels like  Patagonia and  Baboon to the Moon  got together and decided to make a toiletry set for women who like a “gear” look but also want to organize their skin care products.”  — Megan Spurrell , senior editor

TSA-Approved Beauty Products

The TSA is a government agency that enforces the travel-sized toiletries we can store in our carry-on bags. To help, here's a quick reminder on what you're actually allowed to bring on the plane and how it should all be stored:

Carry-on bags

You're allowed one quart-sized resealable bag , and inside of it, you can include liquid, gel, and aerosol beauty products that are 3.4 ounces or smaller. Solid and powder makeup is allowed, but if they're bigger than 12 ounces, you'll need to put them in a bin for an X-ray screening. According to the agency, any liquid, aerosol, gel, cream, or paste that triggers an alarm during screening will require additional screening.

Checked bags

You don't need to worry about the size of your toiletries in a checked bag, but you'll still need to store your powder, solid, and liquid travel-sized toiletries in clear resealable bags — the size of these clear bags does not matter.

Stocking up on these travel-sized toiletries before your big trip will make you comfortable and keep you feeling right at home throughout your travels. Each beauty product featured was carefully researched by our beauty editor, Nicole Saunders, to ensure they align with TSA guidance. She also considered the ingredients and materials used to make each travel-sized toiletry, and for added reassurance, every item on our list boasts impressive ratings and reviews.

Topo Designs Dopp Kit

Sophisticated style, unique flat-bottom design, and enough space for every other item on this list

Who this toiletry bag is for: Minimalists and frequent travelers who want to keep all their toiletries in one place

One-of-a-Kind Design

The Topo Dopp Kit is different from other toiletries bags, and that’s why we like it. It’s the only one we tested with a flat-bottomed triangular design, which helps it sit easily on small bathroom counters (which I love). It’s also one of the few (good) toiletry bags that doesn’t come with any internal organization, again, a feature we really enjoy for streamlined minimalist packing and quick use.

Having too many internal organization pouches and pockets takes away from the overall storage space of your toiletry bag. But the real problem is how “organization” leads to overpacking. Stashing a ton of “just in case” items into your toiletry kit pockets is one of the easiest ways to pack too much stuff .

The Topo dopp kit is just one big pouch for all your stuff so you can see everything at a glance. The internal water-resistant nylon lining is even a bright contrasting color (like bright green) so you can easily locate all your stuff. It’s a small detail, but a nice touch.

Coming in at 11 inches long, this dopp kit is big enough for full-size bottles (although I don’t recommend traveling with them), and can easily handle full-size toothbrushes, electric razors, and other larger items. However, the soft shape and lack of hard edges lets it conform to most carry on sized travel backpacks .

The 1000D cordura fabric is tough enough for whatever you pack and, while not perfectly waterproof, the nylon interior and YKK zipper are super reliable. The handle loop can work for hanging this bag in a pinch, and you can customize your bag with a leather, canvas, or even ripstop nylon exterior in a variety of colors to match your swagger.

What We Like: Simple, Durable, Reliable

  • Simple, thoughtful shape: This bag is big enough for everything you need but doesn’t encourage overpacking
  • Flat-bottom design : We love how the flat-bottom design lets this bag sit on even tiny counters without tipping over and spilling stuff everywhere
  • Contrasting interior fabric: See everything at a glance

What We Don’t Like: Not Great for Hanging

  • No hook: The carrying loop can hang from a hook, but it’s not ideal
  • Zero organization: The simple design is a plus for us, but if you need organization for makeup or medication this might not be the bag for you

Lermende Clear Quart-sized TSA Toiletry Bag

Clear, simple, spacious, and great for frequent carry on travelers who want to save time in TSA security

Who this toiletry bag is for: Frequent travelers and people with multiple (TSA-approved) liquid toiletries

A Clear Winner

TSA regulations mean that you’re supposed to store all your liquids under 3.4 oz in a clear quart-sized bag that you remove for inspection. But we don’t all do it. If you’re a frequent traveler who’s sick of getting hassled because you pack a lot of toiletries, be proactive with this regulation-sized toiletry bag and breeze through security screenings.

The Lermende clear quart-size bag is the max allowable size, yet still lightweight. It’s waterproof, well-designed, and quite simply, the easiest way to travel with liquids. We liked the strong PVC construction and simple carrying loop.

It can make a great second toiletry bag for overflow items and makeup if you can’t fit all of your toiletries in one bag.

What We Like: Clear and Lightweight

  • TSA Compliant: What you see is what you get
  • Affordable : At just $10 (for the 2-pack) these toiletry bags are a bargain for carry on travelers

What We Don’t Like:  Boxy

  • Boxy. The square shape can be hard to pack in some smaller or slimmer carry on bags
  • See-through. The see-through case is great for security, but you won’t have any privacy when you land, which can be annoying in hostels or shared accommodation

travel size toiletries home bargains ladies

An affordable, sleek, easy to use electric travel toothbrush. It even comes with a built-in carrying case for the most reliable way to keep your teeth clean on the go

Who this toothbrush is for: People who want clean teeth without the hassle of a bulky electric toothbrush

Not Your Average Travel Toothbrush

There’s a reason the quip toothbrush doesn’t feel like a travel toothbrush. It’s because it isn’t a normal travel toothbrush.

Unlike the flimsy folding travel toothbrushes you’re used to, the quip is a powerful, portable electric toothbrush designed for everyday use. It just also happens to be built for travel, thanks to the clever carrying case/travel case and long battery life (it’s rated to last for 3-months on a single AAA battery).

I signed up for the quip refill plan (with the metal finished brush) last year, and it’s been fantastic. The 2-minute vibrating brush timer is amazing (and it keeps me honest), and I like getting a “new” brush every three months. But the best part is how well the toothbrush travels.

I like packing my “everyday” toothbrush knowing that I don’t have to compromise while traveling. And the ability to stick the case to the mirror and have it ready in the morning is a simple thing, but instantly makes anywhere I’m staying feel more like home, especially during extended stays.

I love the metallic finish option (I have slate) ($40), but at $25, the plastic handle quip is an affordable way to see if a quip electric toothbrush is right for you.

Pro tip: Save your money and skip the quip toothpaste add-on since the tube is 4.7 oz (not TSA compliant).

What We Like: Doesn’t Feel Like a “Travel” Toothbrush

  • The timer: I am a bad brusher. Or, I was before the quip. The two-minute timer helps me keep good brushing habits even on the go
  • The travel case : The case transforms this sleek stylish toothbrush into a badass travel toothbrush in seconds. It lets your toothbrush breathe to dry off (which is nice), and you can attach it to a mirror (the back is sticky) to keep your toothbrush handy on longer stays
  • It’s a normal toothbrush: I have one toothbrush for home and for travel, which is one less thing to think about

What We Don’t Like: A Tad Heavy

  • The weight : The quip toothbrush is heavier than just about every other travel toothbrush, thanks to the battery and handle. But we’re talking a few ounces. If you’re an ultralight minimalist, obviously a little extra weight isn’t ideal, but a great toothbrush is absolutely worth a little extra weight in your toiletry bag
  • Price : Yes, $25 is a bit much for a “travel” toothbrush, but it’s your teeth. You can pay a little extra to keep your teeth a little longer.

Jason Sea Fresh Fluoride-Free Toothpaste

Everything you need for a clean mouth, and none of the harsh chemicals you don’t

Who this toothpaste is for: Minimalists, frequent travelers, and people who want a natural toothpaste that actually works

Naturally the Best

Jason sea fresh travel toothpaste is a slam dunk. It’s exactly the right size for long trips (3 oz)—not too small, not too big for the TSA. It’s also a great alternative to big name brand toothpaste packed with harsh chemicals that can actually harm your enamel.

I’m obviously not a dentist, so take any recommendations here with a grain of salt, but Jason toothpaste doesn’t have any fluoride, gluten, saccharin, artificial sweeteners (which is hilarious that some toothpaste does). It’s also free of parabens, propylene glycol, and SLS, which can cause canker sores in lots of people.

Basically, Jason toothpaste is a great natural alternative to some of the bigger name brand toothpastes with stuff that you just don’t want in your mouth. But if that’s not for you, here’s what to look for if you still prefer a “traditional” travel toothpaste:

  • ADA Seal : Make sure your toothpaste is approved by the American Dental Association
  • SLS-free : Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS causes your toothpaste to “foam” and it can be harmful to your mouth, causing things like cancer sores
  • Avoid whiteners: Whitening agents can strip the enamel from your teeth. Some experts also claim that whitening ingredients in toothpaste aren’t in contact with your teeth long enough to do much to whiten teeth anyway
  • Avoid Triclosan : This antibacterial ingredient supposedly helps prevent gingivitis, but has been largely removed from all toothpastes (although not technically banned) since it can interfere with your thyroid and cause antibiotic resistance

What We Like: Not Just Another Tiny Tube of Toothpaste

  • It lasts forever: One tube of toothpaste can last for weeks
  • Tastes great : The natural flavor is fantastic
  • No harsh chemicals : You don’t want SLS or sweeteners in your mouth

What We Don’t Like:

  • Not much: Honestly, for the price and the quality, this product is fantastic

Little Seed Farm Natural Deodorant

All-natural travel deodorant with activated charcoal (not baking soda or aluminum) for a better clean smell

Who this deodorant is for: Long-term travelers who want to stay naturally fresh

Natural Deodorant

Deodorant is one of the most important toiletries you can pack. Heck, it might be one of the most important things in your travel backpack , period. Make sure you get a deodorant that makes you smell great, but one that you want to use day in and day out.

The natural deodorant from Little Seed is a crowd favorite, but that’s not just because of the cute goats and marketing. This natural deodorant works using activated charcoal—not baking soda or heavy metals, like aluminum, to filter out your stank, for cleaner smelling travel days.

If you’ve ever had to toss out a favorite travel shirt due to sweat stains in the armpits, that’s likely to due the aluminum in your deodorant. Seriously.

Activated charcoal is a great “scent” but you can order test-size samples in each scent to find one that best works with your body chemistry. And test-size samples are perfect for short trips.

Try switching to a natural deodorant that not only smells great, but doesn’t use harmful chemicals or cruel production practices. You might want to transfer this deodorant from the glass container into a lighter plastic screw top container or an empty tin.

What We Like: It’s Naturally Good

  • Lasts forever: A container can last for several months (I’m on month six)
  • No aluminum: Don’t ruin your shirts (or your body!) with harsh chemicals and heavy metals

What We Don’t Like: It’s a Little Different

  • Takes getting used to: Unlike roll on or spray deodorants, you have to spread this one by hand (or wooden applicator). It takes a little getting used to

Dr. Bronner Pure Castile All-in-One Soap Bar

Bar ($5) It’s Dr. Bronners. It’s amazing. What else do you need to know?

Who this soap is for: Long-haul travelers and people who want a natural all in one soap that actually works for all the things

The Dr. Is In (your bag)

If you don’t know about Dr. Bronner’s All-In-One soap, I don’t know who you are or how you’ve managed to avoid this fantastic product.

Dr. Bronner’s is literally the “do everything” soap since you can clean just about anything with it including your hair, skin, clothes, and I’m sure any funky mess you happen across.

I prefer the Dr. Bronner’s soap bar to the ever popular Dr. Bronner’s liquid soap simply because it lasts forever. Sure, it’s heavier than the liquid soap, and you need to carry a soap container or ziploc bag to keep it from gooping up your toiletry kit, but aside from that, you can travel with absolute confidence knowing that whatever mess you make, you can clean it up.

5 oz bars are all they sell, which can be a bit much for shorter trips. So I recommend cutting a bar in half to lighten the load.

What We Like: One soap to rule them all

  • Use it for everything: I use this for hair, body, and clothing
  • That smell : That smell, tho. Mmmmmm…

What We Don’t Like: Soap bars are a bit annoying

  • Soap bars : Like any bar of soap it can be a hassle to pack. If you’re taking a short weekend trip, snag a tube of the Dr. Bronner liquid soap in a 3 oz bottle

Sea to Summit Hand Soap Flakes

Featherweight soap in your pocket for when you really need to wash your hands

Who this travel soap is for: Germaphobes and people that really need a little extra (lightweight) soap on the go

Forget Hand Sanitizer

Here’s the thing about travel—it’s messy. Not everywhere you go will have soap in the bathroom (or a bathroom for that matter). If you’re a germaphobe, or know you’re traveling off the grid and need to keep your hands clean, the Sea to Summit soap flakes are one of the only “just-in-case” toiletry items I heartily recommend.

The easy to use click-shut case contains 50 leaves of “soap” so it will last a while if you ration them out. Great for dirty bathrooms or sketchy places when you just need a quick wash.

Honestly, they make a whole line of travel soaps, from body wash to laundry soap, but the hand soap is the only useful item. One leaf is enough to lather you up for a quick wash, just make sure that you take out the soap leaf before you get your hands wet, or you might use the whole thing in one go. Seriously.

What We Like: Weighs Nothing

  • Lightweight: This featherweight container weighs next to nothing for ultralight cleanliness on the go
  • Pocket-size : You can put this in a purse, fanny pack , or your pocket without adding any bulk
  • Easy to use : Just open it up, grab a flake, click the case closed, and lather up

What We Don’t Like: Not a Ton of Use

  • Single use: Each soap flake is pretty small, so you’ll need multiple flakes for truly messy situations
  • Don’t get wet : Not great if you’re already wet (or muddy) as the leaves will stick together if you touch them with wet hands

Harry’s Truman Shave Kit

Get an easy, accurate shave from a lightweight travel razor that costs less than $20

Who this razor is for: Minimalists, frequent business travelers , stylish budget backpackers

You need a razor if you’re traveling for more than a few days. Sure, growing a vacation mustache seems like a good idea, but you still need to trim and shape that lip caterpillar if you want to pull it off.

The choice to go with a travel (disposable) razor or an electric razor is a personal one, and has a lot to do with the frequency you need to shave (daily vs weekly), and how long you’re traveling. However, a good disposable razor with a few extra blades and a good case can last for weeks or even months.

Are disposable razors allowed in a carry on bag?

  • Disposable razor w/ extra blade heads: YES
  • Electric razor: YES
  • Straight razor: NO
  • Safety razor (the old school ones with removable blade heads): NO

The Truman travel razor from Harry’s is a solid choice that you can get cheaper than most Gilette or other disposable razors at your local drug store. Plus, the weighted core handle and rubber grip are actually a pleasure to use.

To get the most bang for your buck, skip CVS and order the Harry’s Truman Travel Kit for $30 to get a razor handle, three five-blade razor heads, 3.4 oz shaving gel (which is way better than bulky shaving foam), travel cover, and a pretty decent dopp kit bag all for the price of a 3-pack of regular blades at the store.

What We Like: Affordability in a Travel-Sized Package

  • Just the right price: For $15, you get a travel-ready razor and shaving gel that will last for weeks
  • Portability : No charging or batteries required

What We Don’t Like: Not Great for Long Trips

  • Still disposable : If you have to shave everyday, this isn’t a great setup for long trips, since even great disposable razors only last so long

Braun M90 Mobile Shaver

The best lightweight electric travel razor for minimalists and business travelers on the go

Who this electric razor is for: Long-term travelers, minimalists, business travelers

A Reliable Shave

I don’t always use an electric razor when I travel. Mostly because they’re heavier than a disposable razor, and I don’t have to shave all that often. Plus, it’s one less thing to charge.

However, the Braun M90 travel razor has me rethinking my old-timey shave options.

This  travel-friendly, compact razor only weighs 3.2 ounces and is packed with useful features. The blade guard protects the shaving foil during travel and also locks the razor into “off” mode so it won’t turn on in your bag. And when you flip the guard down to use the razor, it turns into an extension for a better grip, which is partly why the razor is so compact.

It’s washable which makes it easy to keep clean, and the wider foil prevents you from those painful nicks and scratches you can cut with budget electric razors. There’s also a convenient sideburn trimmer (aka “mustache shaper”) that flips out from the side, which I really enjoy.

This is a thoughtful travel razor that packs a serious punch for the small size. Personally, I like that it runs on (2) AA batteries, not rechargeable USB, because you can’t always find a plug in the bathroom, and charging a razor isn’t my top priority.

Affordable, compact, and packed with travel-friendly features—the Braun M90 is a solid travel razor for guys that just need to keep it clean on the go.

What We Like: Powerful and Portable

  • Long battery life: You can run this thing for weeks on (2) AA batteries (120 hours of run time)
  • No charging: Batteries mean you don’t have ever have to charge it
  • Portable : It’s only 3.2 ounces and fits in the palm of your hand

What We Don’t Like: Still a Portable Razor

  • Lacks some power : It’s a portable razor, so there are some trade-offs with power and closeness; you can tell when the batteries are running low

SunBum SPF50 Tinted Sunscreen Face Stick

Hands down the best zinc-based sunscreen for your face—especially if you’re active or in the water

Who this sunscreen is for: Active travelers who regularly spend time in the sun or surf

Professional Grade Zinc Protection in a Portable Package

Yes, sunscreen is a “toiletry” item, and yes, you should use it every day.

As a former surf instructor, I’ve been applying sunscreen to my forehead, cheeks, and (pretty big) nose for decades. And I’ve always had three big problems with most sunscreens:

  • They’re not travel-friendly : Liquid sunscreen can’t fly carry on
  • They’re super obvious: Most zinc sunscreen looks like you smeared your face with paint, which is fine in the surf, but not great for walking tours
  • They get in your eye : I can’t handle sunscreen that runs when you swim or sweat

Luckily, SunBum zinc sunscreen isn’t any of that.

The lightweight, easy to pack case is perfect for tossing in your bag or daypack. The SPF zinc goes on clear (with a tiny tint) so you don’t even know you’re wearing it. And it won’t run in your eyes no matter how hard you sweat.

This sunscreen is easy to apply, works like a charm, and honestly lasted me for months. Literally. I used this sunscreen on my face in Spain , Portugal, Indonesia, Malaysia , Singapore, and Thailand . And it comes in a 0.45 oz container.

I can’t explain it, but it just plain works like a charm and will last until the heat death of the universe. Well worth the upfront cost. However, if $18 is a little steep, you can get the 1 oz SPF 50 clear zinc sunscreen (not a stick) for just $10.

What We Like: Never Runny, Easy to Use

  • It lasts forever: I used this stick for months
  • No harmful chemicals: Reef safe and doesn’t contain any oxybenzone or petroleum
  • Sweat proof: You can swim, surf, and sweat in this sunscreen
  • Small package: This is a face sunscreen. You can put this elsewhere, but it won’t last nearly as long or work as well
  • Cost : $18 is a bit steep for a sunscreen stick, but it’s worth it

All Good Organic Zinc Sunscreen Butter

Natural zinc for unbeatable natural sun protection

Who this sunscreen is for: Long-term active travelers and minimalists who want a little extra daily sun protection

Everyday Zinc Protection

All Good is a sunscreen company from California that’s dedicated to making the best reef safe zinc sunscreen you can buy. And they nailed it. This tiny tin of zinc has been with me on multiple adventures, and it’s still going strong.

Seriously, just a dab of zinc for my face and hands is all I typically use for long surf sessions and outdoor activities like driving my moped (on my arms and neck). It’s so effective because there’s no filler in the formula.

In fact, they only use six ingredients to make this stuff: organic beeswax, organic coconut oil, organic calendula flowers, organic jojoba oil, vitamin E, and 25% pure zinc oxide.

One tin will last you for months, and it’s easy to fit in the waist belt pocket of your backpack for easy use on the go.

You have to make sure you rub this zinc in, since it doesn’t go on clear, and yes, you will have a bit of a pale tint if you really lay it on thick, but if you’re going hiking, swimming, sailing, or just out walking all day, toss this little tin in your day bag for easy effective sun protection on the go.

What We Like: Good for You & the Environment

  • It lasts forever: One container can last for months (I’m on month six with half a tin to go!)
  • Reef safe : Made with natural ingredients that not only keep you safe, but also the delicate aquatic life around you
  • Ghostly. It can be a little pasty if you put on too much; start with just a dab, it’ll last longer
  • Cost . $21 seems like a lot for sunscreen, but not when you see how long this lasts

What Not to Pack: Toiletries to Avoid

Avoid silicone travel-sized bottles.

Silicone reacts with all kinds of ingredients including alcohol and salicylic acid (which is in more than you think)

Aerosol Bottles

Aerosol gels and creams are notorious for malfunctioning, especially in pressurized cabins and flights not to mention hot bus compartments and other “non-optimal storage environments.” Avoid any pressurized cans if you can.

Anything 3.5 oz & Above

The TSA caps carry on liquids at exactly 3.4 oz (100mL). Don’t try to sneak your favorite full-size toiletries on or you might land with nothing.

Leather Dopp Kits

For some reason, bespoke leather bathroom bags have become popular. They shouldn’t be. Leather is heavy, and holds the smell of liquids and gels for longer. You can’t air out leather if something goes wrong in your toiletry bag, and honestly, leather bags are heavy and more expensive than better travel fabric alternatives like waxed canvas and ripstop nylon.

How Were These Toiletries Tested?

If you want to learn about budget travel, minimalist carry on packing, or how to travel (and even live and work) in dozens of countries all over the world, Shawn is your guy. Shawn is not a New York Times bestselling travel author, but he is a full-time freelance blogger, copywriter, and content manager and is also a published photographer. He likes to rock climb, trek, surf, ride his bike, and read a bunch of sci-fi books.

I’m currently on my second around-the-world trip, and I’ve had a blast testing all of these toiletries and grooming products for you guys. I’m obsessed with discovering and testing quality products to create the ultimate minimalist, carry on -friendly packing list that’s lean enough for budget flights, yet tough enough to keep up with my active traveling lifestyle.

I surf, climb, bike, and hike all the dang time, and I need toiletries that can keep me smelling fresh and clean no matter what I get into.

My secret wish is to travel with nothing more than a fanny pack and a cool hat, but until that magical day happens I’ll keep winnowing down my carry on packing list until I can fit all my gear in my pocket.

Not all of these products have been with me for the entire trip. I’ve purchased a few items along the way, obviously, and some of the items I quickly tested before settling on a favorite that lives in my bag. But every item has been battle-tested in real world travel environments including:

  • And more

Key Concerns While Testing

  • Portability: How does the product travel, and is it TSA-approved for carry on travel?
  • Ease of Use: Can I pack and use this product on the go with relative ease?
  • Performance: How does the product actually work in hot, cold, sweaty, stinky, real-world travel conditions?
  • Value: Is the product worth the price, and would I pack this for any specific type of trip?

Portability and performance are my top concerns, because at the end of the day, you’re only going to pack the items that actually fit into your bag. And you’re only going to use the items you packed. However, I always make sure that the toiletries I test and recommend are useful for most people and simple to use while traveling. And it never hurts to get a good deal.

Travel & Leisure / Kristin Kempa

Anyone who’s adventure-bound — whether headed on a weekend camping excursion or a month-long beach stay — will need to make smart and strategic packing decisions, especially when it comes to toiletries. The best travel toiletries are portable, multi-functioning, and convenient, to help you maintain an effective grooming routine with fewer, smaller items than what you’re used to using at home.

From compact skincare products to versatile hygiene essentials, we’ve culled the best travel toiletries in every category. And, keeping the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule for liquids in your carry-on luggage in mind, we’ve swapped some traditionally liquid items for solid alternatives to make packing even easier.

Best Face Wash

Evolvetogether face wash.

Evolvetogether

It’s lightweight, convenient, and sustainable.

It may not be as effective at removing makeup as other solutions.

Whether you’re trying to cut down on liquid toiletries for your carry-on luggage or you’re just trying to avoid potential spills in your bag, non-liquid products are very convenient for travel. This tried-and-true powder face wash comes in 100 percent biodegradable individual-use packets, so it’s easy to pack the exact amount you need for your trip.

Plus, they’re slimmer and more lightweight than even a miniature bottle of liquid. The water-activated unscented face wash turns into a foam with an ultra-fine sandy texture that cleanses, exfoliates, and moisturizes your skin.

The Details: 30 packets, 2 x 3.5 inches each

Best Face Moisturizer

Elizabeth arden eight hour cream.

It delivers long-lasting hydration in a travel-friendly tube.

Some skin types may be sensitive to salicylic acid.

Between the dry air in plane cabins and climate changes in a new environment, traveling can be taxing on your skin. This small but mighty tube of petroleum-based face cream delivers eight hours of hydration to help keep your skin soothed, dewy, and moisturized. Meanwhile, it’s formulated with vitamin E to repair damage caused to the skin barrier and salicylic acid to promote gentle cell turnover for healthier, smoother-looking skin. A bonus: this purse-friendly product doubles as a balm for cracked and chapped lips.

The Details: 1.7 ounces

Best Lotion

La roche-posay lipikar ap+m triple repair body cream.

The multi-tasking formula eliminates the need for multiple creams.

Be sure to layer SPF on top.

When you travel, multi-tasking products are your best friend as they allow you to lug fewer items overall. That’s why we love this prebiotic moisturizer, which can be used on your body, hands, and face. It’s packed with a combination of shea butter, glycerin, and niacinamide to replenish lost moisture and soothe dry skin. The non-greasy, non-sticky formula is non-comedogenic and safe for sensitive skin.

The Details: 2.5, 6.8, or 13.52 ounces

Best Body Wash

Glossier milky jelly cleansing bar.

It won’t count against the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule for carry-ons.

It’s pricey.

Another convenient multi-tasker, this nourishing cleansing bar can be used both on your body and face. And feel free to toss this ergonomically-designed soap bar in your carry-on luggage since it won’t count against the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule. The fragrance-free vegan cleanser is safe to use on sensitive skin, and it’ll leave your epidermis feeling hydrated and never stripped. It uses chamomile extract to help balance and even your complexion.

The Details: 3.85 ounces

Best Face Sunscreen

Summer fridays shadedrops spf 30 mineral milk sunscreen.

It’s enriched with vitamins, antioxidants, and soothing chamomile.

If you’re prone to sunburns, you may prefer a higher SPF value.

Whether you’re headed beachside or hitting the ski slopes, dermatologists agree it’s imperative to protect your skin from the sun with SPF 30 or higher whenever you’re spending time outdoors. This sunscreen is formulated like a lightweight serum, so it has none of that greasy, sticky feeling of traditional sunscreen, nor will it leave a white cast on your skin. It’s formulated with zinc oxide (which is safe for sensitive skin), smoothing and plumping squalane, and a vitamin E-based antioxidant complex that helps protect skin against free-radical damage.

Best Body Sunscreen

Babo botanicals sheer mineral sunscreen lotion spf 50.

It has a comfortable, lightweight formula.

There is a faint mineral smell.

When we tested 20 different travel-sized sunscreens , this nourishing, non-greasy SPF 50 formula stood out above the rest. We particularly loved the lightweight, liquid formula, which felt more like a lotion than a sunscreen and was not as heavy or sticky as old-school sunblock tends to be.

Plus, we were able to get plenty of use out of just a small dollop of the zinc oxide-based product, making the 3-ounce a better value for the price. It offers 80 minutes of water-resistance, so it’s a great pick for beach or pool trips. Plant-based ingredients including shea butter help moisturize and soothe skin.

The Details: 3 ounces

Best Shampoo

J.r. liggett's all-natural shampoo bar.

The long-lasting bar is equal to approximately 24 ounces of liquid shampoo.

The rose, lavender, and spearmint scent may not be for everyone.

Not only are shampoo bars more environmentally friendly (due to lack of plastic packaging) and more cost-effective (since you typically get more washes out of a bar than a bottle) than their liquid counterparts, but they’re also a mess-free, TSA-friendly option for travel.

We especially love this all-natural pick because it can also be used as a body soap, a lubricant for shaving, or for hand washing clothing items such as socks and underwear. The 100 percent vegetable oil formulation doesn’t strip the natural oils from your hair and naturally conditions it, so many people find they don’t need to use an additional conditioner after shampooing (and can therefore pack one less item).

The Details: 3.5 ounces

Best Conditioner

Pureology hydrate conditioner.

It softens and moisturizes hair while controlling frizz.

It's expensive.

When subjecting your hair to new environments while traveling, it can easily get dried out. This creamy and luxurious conditioner deeply softens and nourishes stressed hair and works to restore moisture. It’s formulated with moisturizing jojoba, health-promoting green tea, and sage, which supports hair follicles. Just a small amount of this color-safe conditioner goes a long way, making it an effective choice for travel (and it helps to balance out the hefty price tag).

The Details: 1.7, 9, and 33.8 ounces

Best Hair Serum

Christophe robin regenerating serum.

This all-in-one hair serum hydrates dry hair and protects against heat damage.

Be sure to travel with the lid so the press pump doesn't get bumped accidentally.

This regenerating serum is the only hair care item you'll need to pack in your toiletry bag (besides shampoo and conditioner, of course). It's designed to hydrate and replenish dry hair while acting as a heat protectant for up to 440 degrees Fahrenheit. The main ingredients all have specific purposes, too, including strengthening prickly pear seed oil, nourishing tucuma butter, and castor oil to provide a healthy shine that won't leave your hair looking or feeling greasy. You only need to use a small amount so the tiny bottle takes up very little room and lasts a long time.

Best Hair Brush

Putysuun travel comb brush combo.

This compact item includes two styling tools in one.

It may feel a bit flimsy.

A hair brush can be a tricky item to pack due to its awkward shape and bristles, which can get caught on and damage vulnerable items such as knit sweaters. This combination tool includes a hair brush and a fine toothed comb in one, so you can address all your hair styling needs with a single item. The best part is that it folds up into a compact tool that won’t risk snagging other items in your luggage. When folded, it becomes a pocket-friendly size that’s easy to stash.

Best Hairspray

Sexyhair spray & play volumizing hairspray.

It protects hairstyles against humidity.

It can make your hair feel a little crunchy.

When you’re traveling, it’s impractical to pack various hairsprays, gels, and styling creams for a variety of hairstyles. Instead, rely on a single product which has numerous uses. This small but mighty hairspray has plenty of hold to keep your tresses securely in place no matter your activity.

The volumizing spray provides fullness, lift, hold, and shine, and it’s suitable for use on all hair types. If you’re headed to a hot or humid location, rest assured that the product’s humidity protection will help keep your strands from frizzing for up to 72 hours.

The Details: 1.5, 10, or 16 ounces

Best Hand Sanitizer

Touchland hand sanitizer.

It’s formulated with moisturizing aloe vera.

The scents are strong.

Whether you’re boarding a long-haul flight or trekking through terrain where you won’t encounter a sink for quite a while, hand sanitizer will help keep your hands clean. This flat container is extra convenient because it slides nicely into a pant or purse pocket — or you can clip it to a key ring or lanyard. The aloe vera-based formula is moisturizing, and each bottle contains 500 sprays. Choose from delicious scents like lemon-lime spritz, frosted mint, and citrus grove.

The Details: 1 ounce

Best Travel Razor

Gillette venus comfortglide white tea blades.

Courtesy of Amazon

It comes with a travel case for safe packing.

The short handle may be tougher to maneuver than a larger one.

With a mini handle and a nifty travel case, this razor is easy and safe to toss in your toiletry bag and won’t take up too much space. The pivoting head gets into tough-to-reach areas for a smooth, close shave. The three-blade razor is surrounded by water-activated gel bars that release a rich body butter lather, guarding your skin against nicks, cuts, and irritation as you shave — and eliminating the need for an additional shaving cream.

Best Mini Deodorant

Lume whole body deodorant.

It can also be used on your feet, thighs, and anywhere else you sweat.

The roll up mechanism can stick and become defective.

When you’re traveling, it’s helpful to pack multi-functioning products that allow you to tote fewer items overall. This full-body antiperspirant helps keep your pits, feet, and any other area where you tend to sweat feeling and smelling fresh for up to 72 hours. Powerful yet gentle, the aluminum-, paraben-, and baking soda-free formula is safe for sensitive skin.

The Details: 2.2 ounces

Best Travel First Aid Kit

Protect life small first aid kit.

It helps ease the stress of mini emergencies.

 It doesn’t include pain medication.

It’s always a good idea to carry first aid essentials in case of small emergencies like scrapes or splinters. Don’t let the small size of this health kit fool you: it contains 100 pieces, including numerous bandages, gauze pads, an emergency blanket, a CPR mask, tweezers, a tape roll, and more. Pack the 7.5 x 5.2 x 1.5-inch container in your backpack or purse to address minor injuries on the go without having to stop at the drugstore.

Best Travel Toiletry Containers

Liquisnugs premium leak-proof silicone travel bottles.

The TSA-approved bottles come in two different sizes.

You may need to purchase multiple sets to accommodate all your travel liquids.

Some of your favorite toiletries may not be available in travel-friendly sizes. That’s where these nifty refillable containers come in. Available in 2- and 3-ounce sizes (use the larger containers for liquids you use more frequently), the silicone bottles are super simple to fill with your lotions, body washes, shampoos, and more thanks to a larger opening at the top. In our testing , each individual bottle held up well and there wasn’t any spillage or damage after we tossed, turned, and dropped them in our simulations.

The Details: 2 and 3 ounces

Best Toothbrush

Kulusion dental travel kit.

It holds your toothpaste, too.

It’ll count as a liquid if you fill it with toothpaste.

Here’s another useful tool that can replace multiple items. This travel-sized toothbrush comes with a built-in, refillable toothpaste container, which easily releases your preferred toothpaste with the touch of a button. When shut, the contraption keeps the soft toothbrush head clean and protected.

Best Bug Spray

Off family care insect repellent ii with picaridin.

It doesn’t have any off-putting chemical smells.

It doesn’t come in a container larger than 4 ounces.

When T+L put 16 different bug sprays to the test , this OFF! pick rose to the top of our list. What we love: the highly effective 5 percent picaridin formula has a very light scent and doesn't feel sticky at all, you may even forget you have it on. Plus, the non-leak bottle is easy to use and it disperses a fine, even mist onto skin. The 2.5-ounce size can be tossed in your carry-on luggage or it can fit in your pocket for day trips.

The Details: 2.5 and 4 ounces

Best Dry Shampoo

Living proof perfect hair day dry shampoo.

Your hair will smell fresh and clean in between washes.

It’s not cheap.

The less time you spend shampooing your hair on vacation, the more time you’ll get back to enjoy your trip. On days between hair washes, you can use a dry shampoo to freshen up your tresses and say goodbye to greasy strands. Living Proof’s cult favorite version goes a step further by actually cleansing your hair, so it looks, feels, and is clean. The fragrance is nice and not overtly floral or chemical.

The Details: 1.8, 5.5, or 9.5 ounces

Tips for Buying Travel Toiletries

Know which items you truly need.

When you pack for a trip, know you won’t necessarily need to have all the comforts of home with you. Prioritize your daily essentials including toothpaste, soap, and deodorant. Consider which items you’ll realistically use, and which ones you can do without (for instance, you may want hairspray for a trip to Paris but not for a camping excursion). If you’re staying at a hotel, think about items you may not be picky about (such as shampoo and body wash) that may be provided by the facility free of charge.

Invest in reusable containers

You may find miniature versions of your favorite products adorable to look at, but they’re not the most sustainable or cost-effective option. Plus, your favorite brands may not even have travel-size picks available. Consider investing in reusable containers in TSA-friendly sizes. That way, you can fill them with the full-sized toiletries you already buy and you can take just as much as you need for the length of your trip.

Use a clear, ziplock bag to store your liquids and prevent leaks. This also makes it easier to see what you have and comply with airport security regulations. Try to stock up on multi-tasking products (for instance, a lotion that can be used both on your face and body) so you’ll have to pack fewer items. Use reusable travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces or less for any larger items that you want to pack in a carry-on.

Pay attention to TSA travel restrictions and make sure all your carry-on items comply with the official 3-1-1 liquids rule , which states that you can bring containers equal to or smaller than 3.4 ounces that fit in a single quart-size resealable bag. When possible, try subbing in solid alternatives to liquid toiletries (for example, a bar of soap over a liquid body wash), which are not subject to liquid restrictions and take up less space.

Travel Toiletries | Ultimate Guide

Travel Toiletries | Ultimate Guide

  • Travel Toiletries

Here’s Chris @ Gravel's Ultimate Guide to Travel Toiletries.

Chris here - why listen to me? Well I've been designing & selling toiletry bags for years and have collectively have tested hundreds of toiletries. We reluctantly admit that we’ve spent crazy hours scouring the aisles at WalMart, Target, boutiques...& online retailers for the best travel toiletries. We even had a toothpaste brushing session where we tested 25 toothpastes to see which one we’d like best.

Most of these travel toiletries are linked to Amazon so you can pick these up quickly before your next trip. At the bottom of the page there is also a section dedicated to Women’s Travel Toiletries.

My current travel toiletries load-out

toiletry bag for men

Quip Toothbrush, Harry's deodorant, David's toothpaste, QTips, Toenail clippers, pill bottle with mini pharmacy (Tylenol, allergy medicine, Ibuprofen, etc), Travel Bottles with Dr. Bronners & Harry's Body Wash, Band-Aids, Ear Plugs...and it's not pictured but I typically have some sort of lip balm.

Toothbrush  Chris' Pick! Quip ($25)

travel toiletries - quip

Why Chris loves it - It’s compact & electric! There are beautiful colors to choose from. They come with a travel case to protect the bristles. It uses AAA batteries that last what seems like forever. They have monthly subscriptions  The only drawback is that the bristles don’t spin, it’s more of a vibration.

They fit nicely in any of our toiletry bags - either the Explorer SLIM toiletry bag or Explorer PLUS toiletry bag.

To be honest though...you can get a cheap toothbrush from WalMart and it'll probably perform just as well. I wish the Quip bristles moved more like a spinning brush head. I just love the design, feel, etc.

At the end of the day just bring what travel size toothpaste you have so you don’t have to go out and buy something that’s probably super similar. After trying SO many...they are all pretty similar to be honest. I do know some people that will take a larger tube and transfer over toothpaste into their travel toiletries...you could try that with toothpaste but that just doesn’t sound fun to me.

Davids 1.75oz ($5/tube). I look forward to brushing every time with Davids. They’re expensive but it makes brushing a joy and I justify the price because toothpaste lasts so long and the "price per brush" (PPB?) is still super low. We were worried the aluminum toothpaste packaging would cause a toothpaste explosion after getting smashed while traveling but alas...that doesn’t happen!

travel toiletries - toothpaste

Best Bang For Your Buck

Crest Gum Restore .85oz ($2/tube). We love this one because it’s inexpensive but tastes good & is a little cheaper.

Dr.Tung’s Smart Floss - Cardamom Flavor ($3.98/ea). I splurged on this to see what the buzz was all about. Seriously, check the reviews...who leaves reviews for FLOSS!? I now know why - it’s the perfect floss. It expands a little and its texture gets the job done better than any other floss we’ve used.

travel toiletries - floss

Placker’s Dental Floss   (10.62/Pack @ $0.02/each). You probably know about these but they’re great to just toss a handful into your toiletry bag and then you’re set. The best part about them is the “toothpick” mode where the little pointy part can get food out of those hard to reach places.

As with all travel toiletries...if you already have some floss at home they all really do the same thing so you can just buy some of these when you are ready.

Electric Razor For Men

Braun Series 3 ($54.99). Low profile & just works. It fits SUPER well in our Explorer PLUS toiletry bag .

travel toiletries - braun

Razor For Women

Harry’s ($26.98 for a handle & 13 razor heads) These razors aren’t marketed specifically towards women… but wow are they a steal for the price and quality. Each razor head lasts me 3+ months.

Shampoo For Men

When traveling with shampoo...or any liquid travel toiletries for that matter...reality is instead of buying some travel toiletries...just take what you already have. We made travel bottles that fit together to make the most of the vital space in your toiletry bag - Soft 3oz (89 ml) Liquid Bottles (Two Pack) . Fill them, change the label to whatever’s inside, and pack them away so you don’t have to worry about showing up to your hotel with that teeny bottle of shampoo you all have to share.

travel bottles

Dr. Squatch - Fresh Falls 12oz ($18.95) You may have seen the Dr. Squatch commercials...they’re hilarious. The first time I tried Dr. Squatch was when I showered at a friend’s house and used his. I instantly loved it!

Shampoo For Women

OUAI Shampoo & Conditioner Set ($56.00) There are 3 different options to choose from depending on your hair: Fine, Medium and Thick. They each provide different benefits based on what your hair-type needs. Like all of their other products, they are cruelty, paraben, sulfate, and gluten free.

Deodorant For Men

Chris’ Pick - Harry’s Odor Control ($16/3 pack). I hate standing in the travel toiletries aisle at WalMart and smelling 20 different deodorants. Buy this three pack - they all smell good. Harry’s is notoriously good at nailing all their scents. I’ve given up anti-perspirant and it took me a while to finally settle on a deodorant I love.

Deodorant For Women

Caitlin’s Pick - Hey Humans Natural Deodorant ($12.41). This brand is amazing. They’re vegan, cruelty free, and paraben free. Even aluminum free! So no more stains on white or tighter fitting shirts. Thank the heavens. Just when you think it couldn’t get better, their packaging is made from recyclable paper too. It’s great for your pits and for the planet!

Chris’ Pick For Men

Dr. Bronners Castile Soap 2oz ($4.99/ea). The first time I used castile soap I was shocked how it was so liquidy but quickly learned a little bit goes a long way. It’s even cheaper to buy a larger 8oz size of Dr. Bronners or even larger 25oz size of Dr. Bronner s and use our Soft 3oz (89 ml) Travel Liquid Bottles (Two Pack) to fill them up. You can even pick these up at WalMart.

travel toiletries - dr. bronners

Caitlin’s Pick For Women

Method ($6.99) This brand has some of the BEST scents. It will literally leave you smelling fresh all day. They have a few different options (even a line for men) and they never disappoint. If they had candles in the same scents, I’d hoard them all.

Caitlin’s Pick For Women

Travel bottles.

Gravel’s Pick ($14) Soft 3oz (89 ml) Liquid Bottles (Two Pack)

travel toiletries - travel bottles

We scoured the internet for bottles to carry our liquid travel toiletries...we couldn’t find anything we liked so we made our own. They fit together nicely and you can fit 2 in the Explorer SLIM toiletry bag & up to 7 in the Explorer PLUS toiletry bag.

Travel Toiletries To Always Have (just in case)

Mack’s Ultra Soft Earplugs ($10.79) Inexpensive and you might as well buy these in bulk just to have in case your hotel has an outside karaoke bar that goes until 4am. Yes, Chris here speaking from personal experience. I now include these with my travel toiletries list as small yet essential.

travel toiletries - earplugs

Band-Aid Pack of 100 ($6.88). You never know when you’ll get a little cut so I always keep a few stashed in the fleece pocket on the back of our Explorer SLIM toiletry bag

Toenail Clippers/Fingernail Clippers

HAWATOUR Toenail/Fingernail Combo ($9.97) Amongst all your travel  toiletries...this is a must have. You don’t want to be snuggling and catch your sharp eagle claw toenail on your significant other.

QTips - SUPER useful to have some stashed in your toiletry bag for any potential cleaning or just getting out of the shower with itchy ears. C'mon...we all LOVE that.

Portland Bee Balm Subtle all natural scent & the bee wax helps it stay on longer so you don’t have to re-apply every 20 minutes. I just got the Yuzu and LOVE it.

travel toiletries - lip balm

You probably have a ton of these in your pen drawer though.

Ache/Pain Relief

Tiger Balm (11.30) When traveling you’ll be walking and moving muscles you don’t always use...so you might end up with sore muscles. This stuff is expensive but lasts a long time and works wonders for sore muscles.

Pill Containers & Medicine Carry

EZY Portable Pill Case ($3.49/2) An essential part of my travel toiletries is bringing a little case with an assortment of Tylenol, allergy medicine, etc. so I have a portable little pharmacy in my toiletry bag. These are small, compact, & just nice to have.

Tweezerman Mini Slant Tweezers ($10.99) These take up little to no room and always find a way to be useful. They even come in handy as an impromptu screwdriver (long story).

Manta Sleep Mask   ($35.00) These are perfect for getting some shut-eye on those extra long flights or even road trips.

Aveeno Active Naturals   ($6.90) This one is perfect for daily use and is gentle enough for sensitive skin.

Chris’ Pick QP Collections ($34) I was introduced to beard oil from a friend and...IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE. If you are growing out a beard if you start using beard oil from the start of growth your beard will be super soft & cuddle-able. I’ve been using this oil for years now and just love it.

Women Specific Travel Toiletries

We wanted to have a section dedicated to women’s travel toiletries so you ladies can stay flawless.

Glow Recipe Blueberry Bounce Gentle Cleanser ($10.00-34) A great cleanser that is good for any skin type. It rolls a bunch of great ingredients into one so that you can pack light. It removes makeup and is packed with antioxidants, hyaluronic acid and gentle AHAs.

La Roche-Posay Purifying Foaming Face Wash (14.99) A must-have for oily or sensitive skin. The foam makes your face feel extra clean after a long day. This cleanser is paraben and sulfate free with no synthetic fragrances.

Dry shampoo

Batiste 1.6oz ($8.99) It absorbs a lot and doesn’t make your hair feel dry or brittle.

IGK First Class - Charcoal Detox ($29) A more expensive option but it gets the job done with less uses.  Salon-approved and won’t leave you with a white-cast.

Feminine Hygiene

Tampons /Menstrual Cup  - Whatever works for you! Good to have something while on the go.

Face Masks and serums -- if you’re feeling extra

Brooke’s Pick - Travel-Sized  Glow Recipe Mini Watermelon + AHA Glow Sleeping Mask ($22.00) Brooke swears by this on long flights. It prevents dry skin, smells great and protects you from that gross feeling after a long plane ride.

Paula’s choice skin perfecting 2% BHA liquid exfoliant ($29.50) This is the number one product for Paula’s choice. It unclogs pores, smoothes wrinkles and evens out skin tone.

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask ($22.00) Another great “travel toiletries” option for long flights or layovers. Slap this mask on and have soft lips for the rest of the day.

Women's Hair/Long Hair

travel size toiletries home bargains ladies

Curling Iron/Straightener

6th Sense 2-in-1 Mini Flat Iron/Curling Iron ($24.95) This product still seems unreal to me. It’s genius. Why pack your straightener and curling iron when you could have 2 for the price of 1? Seriously take my money.

Conair - Cordless Petite ¾” Ceramic Multi-Styler ($29.99) No more cords with this  multi-styler. It still heats up to a max of 400 degrees, but takes up half the room. Conair offers this as a flat iron too!

Hair Oil/Hair Mask

Olaplex Bonding Oil ($28.00) Olaplex No. 7 is a life saver for dry ends. It won’t weigh down your hair and a little bit goes a long way. It’s amazing on flights because the bottle is already small enough for TSA (it’s 1oz) and it has a stopper so that it never spills.

Briogeo mini don’t despair, repair! ($14.00) After a long day of traveling, give your hair some extra TLC with this mask. It’ll help to suck some moisture back into your locks and add shine - a must have for your travel toiletries list.

We've been designing toiletry bags for years & know that everyone packs so different. We made different size toiletry bags so you can match your load-out to your trip needs. We took photos with the same toiletries so you can see how each bag packs a little different (and one has 2x storage volume).

travel toiletries - toiletry bag for men

Recognize toiletries from the post? You can see we put in the Harry's deodorant, Mack's earplugs, Dr.Tung’s Smart Floss, Gravel's travel bottles, etc.

Explorer SLIM Toiletry Bag - Pack in a ton of travel toiletries while staying super compact. You'll be able to pack a ton but it's made to be super slender & compact in your travel bag. If you like to travel with an electric razor, electric toothbrush, & bulkier items you'll want to check out the Explorer Plus toiletry bag.

travel toiletries - explorer slim

Explorer PLUS Toiletry Bag - Great for packing bigger items like electric razors, electric toothbrushes, & liquids. It comes with a clear & removable TSA approved bag for quick scans at security checkpoints & it doubles as nice hanging shower bag.

travel toiletries - explorer plus

If you are looking for travel toiletries - we hope this list helped you find new ones to pack inside your toiletry bag! If you are using anything that isn’t on this list that you think should be - leave a comment below and we’ll check it out!

The Best, Most Surprising Travel Minis

Portrait of Ailbhe Malone

Perusing the travel-toiletries aisle is a very specific kind of joy, whether you’re at a Duane Reade near your home or a pharmacie in the 5th Arrondissement. There’s the visual pleasure of something big made small as well as the chance to try a pricey item for a fraction of the cost of the full size. (Finding out that a shampoo makes your hair frizzy instead of fluffy is far less painful when you’ve spent $10 rather than $25.) It makes packing your Dopp kit or toiletry bag feel like a little treat instead of a crazed puzzle.

So I’ve rummaged through the metaphorical travel aisles to find minis of dozens of Strategist-approved brands. Everything is either under 3.4 ounces or a solid so that you can take it through TSA. I’ve mainly focused on stand-alone products (many of which are from brands you might not have realized make travel-size products), but I’ve also included some sets that are particularly good value. From skin care to shampoo, it’s a treasure trove of tinies.

Need tips on packing a minimalist travel toiletries kit? Look no further!

Are you a minimalist packer, or do you find it hard to resist the temptation to overstuff your suitcase? Travelling light is achievable when you plan well and choose the right items, including minimalist toiletries.

In this post, I reached out to   Giorgy from G-Extreme Travel  for her thoughts about using travel size toiletries, as she has been using them for some years now in her minimalist toiletry bag! Here’s what she has to say about minimalist travel toiletries, how to pick the best minimalist toiletry bag, and which travel toiletries you shouldn’t leave home without.

Best Minimalist Travel Toiletry Bag

⭐️ Rating: 4.6 out of 5 | Brand : Sea to Summit

In a rush? The best way to organise your minimalist toiletries is with this Hanging Toiletry Bag . It’s a smaller bag, so you won’t be tempted to overpack. As a bonus, there’s room inside to stow your clear plastic liquids bag – once you clear airport security 🙂

Minimalist toiletries and containers that meet TSA rules can be a great time saver at airport security.

Simply packing less stuff means you won’t need to worry about the cost or hassle of lugging checked baggage with full-sized shampoos and other bulky bottles. Or the wait at the baggage carousel after your flight for your checked travel bag to arrive!

tsa liquids policy

How To Pack The Perfect Travel Toiletries Kit Using Minimalist Toiletries

Using carefully selected minimalist toiletries can also have environmental benefits. Sustainable products create less waste, reduce packaging, and use fewer resources. And travelling light means fewer carbon emissions too!

Organise Your Dry Toiletries With A Minimalist Toiletry Bag

A minimalist toiletry bag is a must-have for minimalist travellers. After all, keeping your dry travel toiletries organised is much easier when they are all in one place: this is where a minimalist toiletry bag comes into play.

Your minimalist hanging toiletry bag  will keep your dry toiletries organised. Its design features a large main compartment and pockets to store smaller toiletry items, including makeup brushes. They are perfect for minimalist travellers and digital nomads who only want to carry the bare essentials, as you can identify what’s inside each area without rummaging through multiple compartments. A huge win 🙂

This is the best bag for your minimalist toiletries because you can hang it up in even the smallest bathroom – perfect when you lack counter space for your toiletries in your room or bathroom.

Use TSA Approved Travel-sized Bottles (100ml or less)

TSA minimalist toiletries

Do you save the tiny plastic bottles you get as samples when you buy cosmetics? They are the perfect size for your minimalist toiletries kit and a great sustainable option. Just rinse them out, then refill the bottles with your liquid travel essentials!

Alternatively, it’s worth investing in refillable bottles that are  TSA-compliant .

Preparing toiletries to meet the TSA Liquids Policy

All You Need to Know About the TSA 3-1-1 Liquids Rule

Pack a tsa-approved clear plastic bag for liquid toiletries.

Separate your liquid items from the other items in your hanging toiletry bag . Pack them in a TSA-approved, quart-sized clear plastic bag, making your liquid toiletries easy to identify and remove at airport security. It also removes any worries about liquids spilling and soiling clothes or other items in your bag.

Now you know what to bring for a successful minimalist toiletry kit while travelling!

Avoid Packing Toiletries You Don’t Need

But wait, that is not all! When packing minimalist toiletries for a trip, you must consider every item you pack and only bring products you truly need.

Which items are necessary for your trip? Do you need that eye cream? Could a regular facial moisturiser do the job? Try to limit yourself and stick to the essentials only.

Look out for products that can serve multiple purposes. For example, a nourishing facial oil could also work as a body oil or an intensive hair mask.

Could you use your lip balm to replace lipsticks or a combined shampoo and body wash rather than separate products?

minimalist toiletries - what's in your make up bag

Switch Liquid Toiletries For Solid Products

Solid toiletries were such a game-changer for me! As strict TSA rules limit the liquid products in your carry-on bag, why not save your liquid “quota” for products without a solid alternative, like facial toner and sunscreen?

However, shampoo, conditioner, and soap are easy to swap from a liquid to a solid product. The bonus is that solid shampoo, conditioner, and natural soaps are often lighter than the liquid version and don’t take up as much space: perfect for your minimalist toiletries packing list.

During the year 2020, I switched all of my liquid products for Lush solid alternatives. Not only do these lightweight bars last up to 80 washes (equivalent to 4 months!), but they also have an enchanting aroma that lingers long after each use. It is without question one of the most minimalist and eco-friendly approaches!

Refill Toiletries Locally

shopping for toiletries

Last but not least, remember that you can likely replenish your minimalist toiletries at your destination. Local products will most likely suit you when you visit a country with a different climate!

If you need help finding the right minimalist toiletries during your trip, try some quick online research or check reviews and recommendations for products available in the country you’re visiting.

Additionally, asking locals for their opinion on specific items always helps. Most people love talking about their homes and what products they use or recommend. It can help you understand the local culture and minimalist toiletries you should consider purchasing.

Travelling does not have to be complicated! With the minimalist approach to packing toiletries, your trips will become hassle-free, smooth, and enjoyable.

What is in My Minimalist Toiletries Bag?

Here’s precisely what’s inside my dry toiletry bag and my clear plastic liquid bag on every trip I take. I’ve picked everything carefully, opting for eco-friendly products where they are available!

What Is In My Dry Toiletries Bag?

  • Bamboo Comb
  • Lush Shampoo Bar

  • Nail clipper
  • Menstrual Cup
  • Washable Cotton pads
  • Bamboo Qtips

What’s in My Clear Plastic Liquids Bag?

Faqs about minimalist toiletries.

Are you thinking about switching to high quality minimalist toiletries? If so, here are some FAQs to give you some more information:

How Do You Minimise Toiletries?

Find the essentials that work best with your lifestyle and stick to those products when packing.

Try to bring sustainable products like solid soaps and shampoo bars instead of liquid versions – this will also help save you space on your trips. Additionally, look for refillable items to use during your travels.

Lastly, research the products available at your destination before you leave! This will ensure you have all the essential minimalist toiletries on hand during your trip.

What Are The Necessary Toiletries?

For most trips, you’ll need shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, hand sanitiser, toothpaste and a toothbrush. All these are available travel-sized for your minimalised accessories travel kit.

You may also want a razor, cotton Pads, Q-tips, and sunscreen. And remember to pack your facial moisturiser and a lightweight, folding hairbrush. Bamboo is the perfect choice for minimalist toiletries, as it only takes up a little space and adds little weight to your bag .

A travel first aid kit is essential for your trip. Pack band-aids, antiseptic cream, and any other necessary items to help you deal with minor injuries on the go. Along with some vital medicine that could help you in emergencies (anti-histamines, diarrhoea tablets, painkillers, and so on).

Pro Tip: Remember to pack liquids from your first aid kit in your clear plastic bag to pass through airport security.

What Toiletries Does A Girl Need?

Women often need to pack more toiletries! Here’s how to keep it minimalist with your toiletries:

Makeup:  Instead of packing your whole collection of eyeshadows, mascaras and contours, bring the essentials.

Face Masks : Pack a minimalist sheet mask or an all-natural clay mask to give your skin some TLC during your travels.

Tweezers:  Make sure to pack a lightweight tweezer and a pocket-sized mirror to tame those pesky eyebrows or chin hairs!

Period/personal hygiene products : Moon cups and washable period pants are a sustainable alternative to pads or tampons.

You may also want to include reusable makeup remover pads, solid perfume and body scrub.

How Many Toiletries Should You Have When Trying To Be A Minimalist?

The number of toiletries you pack will depend on the length of your trip and your personal hygiene needs. Fewer items are always better, so stick to the absolute essentials.

No matter the length of your trip, ensure that you pack minimalist toiletries that are travel-sized and packaged in eco-friendly containers. This will help to keep your toiletry bag light and compact, so you can enjoy your minimalist lifestyle while travelling.

What Are Toiletries?

Toiletries are essential items that help us to stay clean and comfortable. They include a range of products such as soaps, shampoos, conditioners, creams, lotions, toothpaste and more.

Depending on your needs, you can customise your minimalist toiletry kit with travel-sized versions of these products that will only take up a little space in your bag.

Toiletries fit into two categories: skin care and hair care products.

Skincare toiletries include facial cleansers, toners, moisturisers, serums and masks. They help keep your skin looking healthy and free from blemishes or dryness.

Hair care toiletries include shampoos, conditioners and styling products, all of which help keep your hair looking clean and healthy and styled the way you want it.

Final Thoughts – Minimalist Toiletries

Travel-sized containers are helpful when travelling, making packing much more straightforward. You can usually buy replacements on the road; that extra space in your bag could be handy!

Remember that less is more when packing your toiletry bag for a trip. Pack only the essentials and focus on quality items that will last you the entire duration of your travels.

Are you ready to choose minimalist toiletries in eco-friendly containers for your next trip? Ditching unnecessary items and embracing carry-on travel is a great zero-waste way to care for yourself and our planet simultaneously!

You’re all set for a hassle-free adventure next time!

Pin for later!

35 Best Essential Toiletries for Travel for Women

We’ve all heard the famous phrase from a credit card commercial that asks, “What’s in your wallet?” Perhaps more importantly to you fellow travelers is knowing the essential toiletries for travel to pack in your bag. Especially travel essentials for women.

“What’s in your toiletry kit?”

One of the most common questions my husband, Chris, and I are often asked is, “ What should I pack for a trip? ” or “What are the essential toiletries that I need for travel overseas?”

If you are a first-time traveler, or even a seasoned traveler, learning a few NEW “ tricks of the trade ” helps to streamline the packing process. My husband, Chris, often travels for business and offers the Ulti mat e Guide to Planning Travel if you want to delve deeper.

You will find that business travelers have packing and all things travel-related planned to perfection.

This post explores the essential toiletries in your bag with links to my Amazon Storefront for convenience. Because, let’s face it, who doesn’t like to shop at Amazon and have it show up on your doorstep a few days later ?

Before we start talking about some of my favorite travel products, let’s back it up a little and discuss your luggage or travel bags to organize your travel essentials for women.

Travel Essentials for Women: Luggage and Organization

Since I often pack the medicine and some basic toiletries for the whole family when we travel, my toiletry bag is sometimes a bigger checked bag. Oh, I can streamline and downsize for a trip when space is limited, especially if it just my husband and me traveling, or if it is just easier to carry-on our luggage without checking. Generally, I like to have all of my “stuff” with me—a small comfort of home when I am traveling.

When counter space is minimal in a hotel bathroom or Airbnb, these hanging bags are ideal and don’t take up a lot of extra space.

4. Travel Toiletries Containers

HINT * You can also check the travel-size products where you like to shop for smaller-sized options of your favorite products. If your favorites aren’t available in smaller sizes, travel toiletries containers are the perfect size to fill with your go-to shampoo, conditioner, or body wash (especially if hotel toiletries aren’t always your favorite). These bottles meet TSA guidelines, and cut down on full-size beauty products that take up precious real estate in your bag of essential toiletries.

TSA Approved plastic travel bottles

5. Containers with Twist-Off Lids

Another great find are small Containers with Twist-off Lids for items such as lotion, tablets, and vaseline.

Travel Containers Silicone with Twist Lid

6. Mini Spray Bottles

And don’t forget Mini Spray Bottles too! I fill mine with my leave-in conditioner or laundry stain remover.

Fine Mist Spray Travel Bottles

Perhaps I am EXTRA CAREFUL (I have had hair gel leak all over my essential toiletries in my luggage), so I recommend that you use zippered plastic bags to store products that may leak. It is just better to be safe than sorry.

7. Water Resistant Travel Pouches

If you want to go a little fancier on the best travel gear for women with travel bags, Chris and I both use Water Resistant Travel Pouches as well. They are versatile for your essential toiletries, snacks , and essential gadgets .

Women’s Travel Essentials: Hair Products

Now, let’s talk about hair products because they can potentially take up a lot of space. And really, who wants to be without their favorite products and using hotel toiletries instead? Everyone wants to look great on vacation and for all of the Instagrammable moments.

Most hotels and vacation rentals provide a hair dryer.

8. Hair Diffuser

If you have curly hair, a hair dryer with a diffuser attachment might be one of your essential toiletries for travel. You can’t always count on a diffuser being provided in your accommodations.

Universal hair diffusers are a lot easier to pack than searching for a travel hair dryer with a diffuser that also has a dual voltage option .

9. Flat Iron and Curling Iron

Do you use a Flat Iron , Curling Iron , or other styling product? These are a few of my girls’ favorites that are part of their essential toiletries:

NuMe Hair Straightener Tourmaline Ceramic Flat Iron

These appliances take up space in your travel gear, so if you need to pack lightly, just ask yourself, “Do I really need them?”

10. Shampoo, Conditioner, etc.

shampoo 4522695 1920

I like to take my own hair products instead of using the shampoos and conditioners and hotel toiletries that are provided. If you plan to stay in an vacation rental or other lodging, you will definitely need to bring your own shampoo and conditioner as they are not usually provided. You will also want to plan for your own hair gel , leave-in conditioner , and hair spray if you use them.

I buy full-size product for home use and fill my Small Travel Bottles with my favorites.

Not YOUR favorite products? Click through ANY link and search on Amazon for YOUR essential toiletries.

Don’t forget to tuck in your favorite comb , hair pick , brush , or round brush for styling as well as scrunchies , “ouchless” hair bands , elastic bands , and b obby pins [affiliates].

Sunscreen & Beauty Products

11. broad spectrum sunscreen.

Let’s start out with the most important beauty product of them all— PCA Skin Active Broad Spectrum SPF 45 sunscreen with zinc oxide, sweat and water resistant. I’ve got my whole family, husband included, hooked on this stuff. It should be one of your essential toiletries that you wear everyday whether you are traveling or not!!!

PCA SKIN Active Broad Spectrum SPF 45 Sunscreen

12. Anti-Aging Serum

Beauty products are amazing right? Before I apply my sunscreen in the morning, whether I am on vacation or not, I start with Image Skincare Vital C Hydrating Anti Aging Serum . Not only does it smell like an orange grove , it also helps to keep your skin looking young. I love this stuff!

You’re going to be in vacation pictures (hopefully) so you should look beautiful!

13. Makeup Remover Wipes

I may not use Neutrogena Makeup Remover Wipe Singles in my everyday beauty routine at home, but I definitely use them when I travel. They are so handy and eliminate the space other products take.

Basic Toiletries

We’ve covered hair and beauty, now for a few of the basics in your women’s travel essentials.

toothpaste 3067570 1920

Maybe you could do without some of them, maybe you don’t want to. It all depends on the space you have available.

14. Blistex

15. toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, 17. deodorant, 19. perfume, 20. gold bond ultimate healing lotion, 21. hand sanitizer pump and travel size, 22. sunscreen.

Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to the rest of your exposed skin. When you are in the sun sightseeing all day long, you won’t always realize that you are burning until it is too late. That doesn’t make for a fun vacation.

Banana boat sport sunscreen spf 30

29. Off! Deep Wood Mosquito and Insect Repellent Wipes

I usually tuck a few packets of Off! Wipes in my bag. After river rafting in New Zealand on one of our 10 Best Adventures Around the World , my legs were attacked by tiny little biting bugs and I pulled out these wipes to keep the bugs at bay.

30. Clorox Wipes

With germs, you can never be too safe. Add a small pack of Clorox Wipes to your bag of essential toiletries for a little peace of mind.

31. Bandages

Putting together a small first aid kit is a great idea.

32. Blister Bandaid

If you walk as much as our family does on vacation , you might just end the day with a blister or two. Blister Bandage s help to ease the discomfort.

33. Moleskin

Essential toiletries for travel: laundry, 34. all laundry pods/tabs.

If you plan a vacation that last longer than a week, you will likely need to do some laundry. I take laundry pods because they are easy to use and I know how the detergent affects my family’s skin. Try the Tide Sink Packets if you have a few small items.

35. Tide To Go Stain Remover

Spills and accidents will happen. Take care of them when they do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do i need travel size toiletries.

Yes. Not only do they save on space when you pack but they also follow the TSA regulations when you fly with liquids in your carry-on luggage.

Is it cheaper to buy travel-size toiletries?

Not always. Buy your toiletries in bulk or check your local grocery store for their Travel-Size section. Use refillable containers to add your favorite brands such as shampoo and conditioner.

How strict is TSA with toiletries?

You are able to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in your carry-on bag and through the security checkpoint. Sometimes an item will be overlooked; HOWEVER, if you are traveling overseas, your toiletries will be scrutinized there as well.

What toiletries are NOT allowed in a carry on?

Toiletries in containers larger than 3.4 oz (100 ml).

This is a wonderful list! Thanks for making it!

Hope it helps!

I try to keep my bag stocked and restocked so it is ready to go on a whim!

Great. Let me know how the Blister Bandages work for you!

This is so helpful! thanks for sharing.

Glad you liked it.

This is so helpful, especially with places opening up now and people traveling more now!! I am keeping this list in mind when we go on our next trip!!

Just keeping my fingers crossed for some travel this Fall.

Yes! Airborne always! But I always forget insect repellant…that’s a good one!

The handy single pack wipes of insect repellent are perfect.

I have found memories of going into the travel section and buying miniature toiletries for traveling. It was one of the highlights of the trip. These days, though, I much prefer filling smaller containers. A lot more convenient and less waste. Not as much excitement, though. Thanks for all of the wonderful ideas!

Agreed. I fill small containers now so that I can take the toiletries that I use at home.

I used to carry original bottles but my home bottles are very big. Finding great carry on sized re-fillable bottles was a life saver. I usually resort to cutting my hair short for long trips to reduce the hair product and styling products I carry. The one thing we buy over and over again is Aloe for sunscreens. Really should be in my toiletry kit.

Glad I am not the only one that keeps buying aloe. I used to have a small travel-size bottle and it somehow disappeared.

This is a great list! I particularly like the Tide stain remover, such a good idea!

I love that there are so many products to make travel easier.

My mum won’t travel with any other type of plastic zip bags other than Ziploc, so it’s funny you’ve mentioned them here as essential! This is a great list you’ve put together – I always end up forgetting something!

Either I forget something or think of something that would make travel easier.

Ziplock are my go-to favourites. I use the extra large as clothes bags too. I pack them by outfits making it so simple to when travelling.

Great idea.

This is a great list! After so long without travelling, I need a reminder of essential items to pack! Thanks for the great guide!

I always keep my toiletries packed and ready to go.

So glad you included blister bandaids! They’re a life saver on trips with lots of walking and if you have sensitive, blister-prone skin like me

They sure make a big difference when a small blister could have a big impact on your sightseeing.

Thanks for this post, is very useful ?

Glad it was helpful.

Great list! Very detailed; I like to use ziplock bags to sort out my products too! One thing I need to remember to pack is blister bandaids; those would definitely come in handy!

Click through on one of the links!

Great list. I also use zip lock bags for shampoo and such. I once had an explosion of shampoo in a suitcase. It came on shoes and more.

Yes, been there done that. I err on the side of caution for all of my liquids now.

These are great suggestions for travel necessities! I always feel like I need make-up and hygiene items to freshen up after a long day of travel. Thanks for sharing!

It is a great idea to include a few of your must-haves in your carry on as well.

Great selection! Packing toiletries is the most important part of getting ready to travel (it is to me, at least!:)))

Some of use more toiletries than others, but this list gives some good ideas of what to choose.

So helpful! I’ll be traveling soon, so I’m pinning this.

This is such a helpful post! I often forget things and have to spend the first few hours dashing to the supermarket! Julia x

I can be forgetful too. Having stores near by is always convenient.

Goodness what a good (but long) list! I have to admit, I normally bring a fraction of this but I totally agree about your tip of storing it all in zip lock bags. They have saved me from spills plenty of times. 🙂

I like to be prepared, especially on a two week trip away from the comforts of home.

this is a really great list! i love to see the everyday Ziplocks on the list, because they really do come in handy for carry-on travel.

Whoever created Ziploc bags is a genius.

This is a great list, I always have a separate bag for toiletries and always take my own, I love the list

It is nice to have your favorites when you travel.

Such a helpful, comprehensive list. Moleskin is a must after all those walking tours and hikes – but something I always forget!
