Opportunities in the Travel Industry in Nigeria

1. freelance travel agent.

As a freelance travel agent, you will need much less capital and infrastructure to start off. All you might need is a laptop, internet service and a printer. The beauty of the freelance agent is that you can start even from the comfort of your bedroom. You do not necessarily need an office space to begin business.

You will however need to have developed a fair number of clients who will be willing to entrust you with the responsibility of making their travel plans come through.

As a freelance travel agent, you will need to get yourself attached to an IATA registered operator. You will merely serve as sales outlets for the IATA accredited operator. The advantage of working with an accredited operator is that they are usually first to get notifications of reductions in travel fares and other discounts. It is imperative that you are attached to an IATA registered operator. This is because you cannot pay for an air ticket for someone directly to an international airline. The IATA acts as a clearing house for all airlines registered with it.

The capital required to start as a freelance agent can be as little as ₦100,000, to purchase a laptop, printer and internet service.

2. IATA Licensed Agent

You might decide to enter this business as an IATA licensed agent. This involves you registering your company with the IATA as an accredited travel agent. Before you decide to do this, please ensure that you are very aware of what you are doing because the requirements for IATA accreditation could cost you quite a lot. More care should be taken here because it involves a lot more capital than being a freelance agent.

The major advantage here is that you get access to a lot more customers and also have access to the IATA airline database where you can easily get the best ticket prices for your customers. This further translates into higher profit margin. You are even allowed to make bookings for chartered flights.

IATA regulation stipulates that before you can register your travel agency in Nigeria with them, you must meet the following minimum requirements;

  • Four or five workers of which at least two must have significant experience with working with an airline or recognised travel agency
  • You must have an office apartment
  • At least four computer systems with full internet connection and constant power supply
  • You have to be registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

Your start off capital requirement will be in the region of ₦1.5 m to ₦5m. This will depend on your location and the scale you intend to start off with.

Once you have all these requirements, they can then begin to process your registration. Issuance of the license is still subject to other considerations. For a detailed guide on how to obtain the license, please visit their website at www.iata.org .

After obtaining your IATA license, you will then proceed to subscribe with a Global Distribution System (GDS). The GDS is a centralized computerized system used by registered travel agents for the reservation of airline seats, hotel rooms and other items. You can register with famous GDS companies like Sabre , Amadues or Galileo . Their registration procedures and requirements can be found on their websites.

Please be aware that the IATA and GDS registration also comes with training programmes that will expose you on ways to fully explore the possibilities that come with using these systems. Close attention should be paid to these training courses if you intend to make the best use of these systems.

Step 1: Create A Niche

Travel agency deals in a wide array of services. The business can center on corporate, luxury, religious, educational, holidays, or specialty trips. Also, it can include persons with disabilities, men, women, footballers, executives, or can be tailored around a specific group.

More so, to be effective, it is advisable to find a niche in the travel market that has not been explored and grow in it. In doing this, it will reduce the competition you will face and make you stand out in the industry.

First, conduct thorough market research and find out the major needs of the people. Also, decide if you want to render service to people of a particular age, gender, sector, or industry.

In doing all of these, your business will be more effective and you can build a brand that will resonate with people in the industry.

Step 2: Create A Business Plan

A business plan helps you map out the specifics of your business and discover some initial unknowns. It will help you stay on track and serve as a guide on how to operate.

A viable business plan should be based on your market research and analysis. It should include some key points like the existing competition, pricing, product, organizational structure, aims and objectives, financial plans, and projections. Also, it should contain the description of the business, niche, goals, and how you intend to overcome the likely challenges you will face in the travel industry.

As long as you have a business plan, it will be easier to secure funds from banks and other financial institutions.

Step 3: Secure Funding

Finance is important to start and to maintain a business. Having enough funds is one of the realistic ways to bring ideas to live and gives one the capacity to put the best foot forward in business.

As a travel agency, you need funds to secure a location, set up an office, build a website, create promotional materials, and pay for labour. Besides, to keep up with the smooth operation after the business has been set up, it is important to set aside some cash for the day-to-day activities at least for the first 1-4 months. So, you must ensure that you have a source of finance before you swim into the ocean.

Hence, decide if your personal savings is enough to set up the business. If not, you will have to source for funding through crowdfunding or reach out to family and friends for support.

Also, you can write to commercial or microfinance banks for loans or approach investors to invest in your business. Perhaps, you can team up with few people who are also interested in the travel industry and form a partnership.

Step 4: Register The Agency

A travel agency can be structured as a limited liability company, a sole proprietorship, or can be set up as a host, franchising, or consortium structure. Also, it can be a small and privately owned company or part of a larger entity. Whatever structure you want the business to take, it must be registered.

First of all, register with the Corporate Affairs Commission, an agency in charge of business registration in Nigeria. This can be done through the online portal of the commission or you can approach ReDahlia , a brand preoccupied with offering business solution services to entrepreneurs.

Secondly, if you are hoping to operate on a large scale, you will have to obtain a license from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). You have to meet certain criteria before applying for the license. To obtain the license, log on to the official website, and follow the process for license application.

Thereafter, proceed to register with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). The NCCA regulates, supervises, and monitors the activities of travel and other aviation agents operating in Nigeria.

If you want to operate on a large scale, you can write to the Director-General of NCAA attaching the following documents;

  • Certificate of incorporation
  • Memorandum and articles of association
  • Tax clearance
  • Curriculum vitae of the directors
  • Details of insurance
  • Evidence of agency appointment
  • Evidence of IATA accreditation (if any)
  • Corporate company profile
  • Receipt of payment of N10,000

Step 5: Get A Host

Depending on the startup capital, you can decide to start as an independent agency or pay a host agency. This way, the host agency takes care of all regulatory policies, provides office requirements, and splits the commission with you.

They provide the brochures and every basic thing, while you just serve as a travel agent under them. So, if you are planning to be a home-based travel agent, you can approach a travel agency that will serve as a host while you join as an independent contractor.

However, if you have the resource to start the business ground up, you can create your own brand, be the host, and build your client base. You will need to get the necessary license in your name, secure a location, set up an office, hire employees, and invest in the promotion of the business both online and offline.

Step 6: Secure Location

For more credibility as an agency, it is important to have a physical business location, no matter how small it may be. This is because the location is one of the most important factors for success in the business. It positions a business to attract the right customers and clients.

A travel agency should be located in a strategic area where it can be easily accessed by the target audience. Also, it should be well designed to reflect the brand and large enough to accommodate the team and the incoming clients.

More so, you should have a signpost that signals your service offering to passersby. This will create awareness for the brand and may attract customers.

Step 7: Hire Employees

You can start alone if you want to operate on a small scale. However, if you intend to offer services to a wide array of clients, you might have to hire travel agents or support staff that will support the operations of the business. These people, must share the same value and understand the vision of what you are building.

You can hire full-time or part-time staff depending on your need. Some of the staff that matter in a travel agency business are the Client Service Manager, Travel Consultant, Sales, and Partnership Director, etc.

Step 8: Market The Agency

Selling is the lifeblood of every business, and to sell, you need to create brand awareness and make the world know about your business offering.

It is ideal to come up with a marketing plan. This will serve as a blueprint on how to market, promote, brand, and create a positive perception for the brand. Marketing your travel agency can be done in a number of ways and must be tailored around the target audience’s consumption habits.

In the following paragraphs, I will give you some tips you can use for your marketing.

1. Create A Logo And Website

First, your business needs to have a unique logo, a website, business card, flyers, and brochures. Your logo should be timeless and communicate your brand offering.

The website should explain what your business offers and should be optimised for SEO. This will help your business to be found organically when people search for keywords in your industry on Google.

2. Social Media

Leverage social media platforms to promote your business. So, start by creating a page on Instagram , Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. Offer value to your audience and advertise and promote your business on your page.

Also, approach existing customers to give testimonials and positive reviews about your service, then post on your platforms. This way, you can convince the audience that you offer the best services.

3. Ask For Referrals

Once you offer a credible service to a client, do not hesitate to ask for a referral. A client will be happy to refer you to friends and family if you offer a credible service. Do not hesitate to ask. You can have a referral package where people who refer clients to you get a certain commission or a discount on their next patronage.

4. Word Of Mouth Advert

Word of mouth advertising is still the most reliable form of advertising for any business. Let people know about the service you offer, tell your friends to tell their friends and family. Let the word spread. Do not pass on any opportunity to market your service.

The Association has evolved tremendously over the years and now enjoys the recognition of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA); the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC); the International Air Transport Association (IATA); and the Universal Federation of Travel Agents (UFTAA).

In November 1973, a group of travel agents at the instance of Jerry Onuoha Ibe Nwosu of SCAN Travel convened a meeting of travel agencies in Nigeria which held at the John Holt Travel Agency, then located at 149/153 Broad Street, Lagos. At that meeting, an association called the Nigeria Association of Travel Agencies (NATA) was established. Roxy Udo, then General Manger of John Holt Travel Agency became the 1st Honorary President; Tunde Akala, Manager of then Mandillas Travel Agency became 1st Vice President and the convener, Jerry Nwosu became the association’s founding Secretary. The founding fathers saw the need to organise a national body comprising of travel agencies for the purpose of promoting member’s interests, serving as the mouthpiece for agencies, regulating member’s activities and maintaining discipline and professionalism within the travel and tourism industry. NATA later metamorphosed into what is now known as The National Association of Nigeria Travel Agencies (NANTA) which is the umbrella body of all Travel Agencies operating in Nigeria.

Nanta’s first advocacy occurred in january, 1994, when the then executive council led by tunde johnson, presented a paper to then minister of finance, dr. soleye. in the presentation, nanta advised the government to authorize airlines and travel agents to collect airport taxes and remit to the government monthly rather than collecting such taxes from passengers at check in. this advice which was well received and implemented, helped to drastically reduce long queues formed at the airports for tax collection., today, nanta is registered under the land use perpetual act as a non-profit and non-governmental organization (ngo), promoting travel and tourism in nigeria. the association has evolved tremendously over the years and now enjoys the recognition of the nigerian civil aviation authority (ncaa); the nigerian tourism development corporation (ntdc); the international air transport association (iata); and the universal federation of travel agents (uftaa)..

Travel Agency: List of Registered Travel Agencies in Nigeria with Their Contacts

husmansodiq

Are you looking to book that dream getaway to an exotic destination? Fantastic! But how do you ensure you’re getting the best deal and working with a reputable company? That’s where a trusted travel agency comes in. They handle all the details so you can focus on the fun parts, packing your bags and soaking in the sights. If you’re based in Nigeria, you have plenty of options to choose from. We’ve compiled a list of registered travel agencies across the country along with their contact details.

What Is a Travel Agency?

A travel agency is a company that specializes in tourism and helps customers plan and book travel arrangements. They act as a middleman between tour operators, hotels, airlines, and car rental companies to provide you with the best deals and packages. Travel agencies typically offer both leisure and business travel services. On the leisure side, they can help book vacations, cruises, adventure trips, and more. For business clients, they handle travel logistics for meetings, conferences, and corporate events.

In summary, using a registered and reputable travel agency takes the hassle out of trip planning so you can focus on enjoying your adventures and making cherished memories. With their expertise and industry connections, travel agents can help craft your dream getaway.

Benefits of Using a Travel Agency

Using a travel agency for your trip planning has so many benefits. Here are a few of the top reasons to consider an agency:

  • Save time: Planning a trip can be complicated and time-consuming. Travel agents do the work for you and can book everything from flights to hotels to tours.
  • Save money: Contrary to popular belief, travel agencies often get industry discounts and deals that translate into savings for you. They also know the best times to book for the lowest fares.
  • Avoid hassles: Booking through an agency means avoiding the hassle of coordinating everything yourself. They handle any issues that come up along the way so you can relax.
  • Customized trips: Tell your agent where you want to go and your budget, and they’ll craft a personalized itinerary tailored to your needs and wishes.
  • Insider knowledge: Travel agents stay up-to-date with the latest tourism trends, new attractions opening up, and hidden gems in each destination. They know the spots that aren’t in the guidebooks.
  • Recommendations: Not sure where to go? Your agent can provide recommendations based on your interests and budget. They know which destinations pair well together for multi-country trips.
  • Special access: Travel agencies often get VIP access to events, tours, and attractions, as well as upgrades and amenities. They pass these benefits on to their clients.
  • 24/7 support: Should any issues come up during your trip, like a missed connection or medical emergency, your agent is on call to help no matter the time.
  • Peace of mind: Booking through a reputable agency means your trip details are handled by professionals. You can feel confident everything will go smoothly, leaving you to simply enjoy your vacation.

List of Registered Travel Agencies in Nigeria with Their Contacts

When looking for a travel agency to help you book your next trip, you have many options to choose from. Here is a list of registered travel agencies in Nigeria, according to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

Choosing a reputable travel agency can help ensure you have a smooth trip-planning experience. Check reviews from other customers and compare the types of services offered to find an agency suited to your needs.

How to Choose the Right Travel Agency

When choosing a travel agency, there are several factors to consider:

Licensing and certification

Make sure the agency is properly licensed and certified to operate. Check with the relevant government agency that oversees travel companies. Licensed agencies will have met certain standards and have mechanisms in place to protect customer funds. Unlicensed companies could disappear with your money .

Experience and expertise

Select an agency that specializes in the type of trip you want to take. If you’re planning an African safari, choose an agency experienced in arranging safaris and know the logistics. For complex itineraries, an expert agency can save you time planning and avoid hassles. They have insider knowledge and contacts to arrange unique experiences.

Services offered

Think about what services are most important to you. Do you want a full-service agency to handle all the details or just help with booking flights and hotels? Consider offerings like:

  • Customized itineraries based on your interests
  • 24-hour support in case of emergencies
  • Travel insurance and visas
  • Special needs accommodations
  • Unique experiences like cooking classes, private tours or meet-and-greets

Reviews and references

Check online reviews to see ratings and comments from other travelers. Ask the agency for references from previous clients with similar trips to get firsthand feedback on their experience.

Travel agencies charge in a few ways: service fees added to your trip, a commission from travel suppliers, or a combination. Ask about all potential fees upfront and get quotes from multiple agencies before booking. While you want an affordable price, don’t choose an agency based only on the cheapest cost; you often get what you pay for in service and quality.

Choosing a reputable travel agency can help ensure your dream getaway goes off without a hitch. Do some research, determine what’s most important to you, and find an agency with a proven track record of handling those types of details so you can relax and enjoy your trip!

So there you have it, a comprehensive list of registered travel agencies in Nigeria to help you plan your next getaway. Whether you’re looking to book a family vacation, romantic getaway, or business trip, one of these agencies should be able to find you the best deals and handle all the arrangements. Traveling can be stressful, but knowing you have a trusted agency in your corner will help ensure your trip goes off without a hitch.
