How to Make a Travel Photo Collage for Your Wall

What to do with all of those pictures you take on vacation.

travel picture collage ideas

When I travel, I take a lot of pictures. And I mean, a LOT. I think when I got back from China, I found I had taken over 6,000 pictures! Yes, we were going non-stop all day for 28 days, and I saw soooo many amazing places, and in all fairness, there were a number of duplicates in there. Nevertheless, because I saw so many incredible things and had such a fabulous trip, I wanted to share that with my family and friends. But nobody, and I really mean NOBODY!, wants to slog through 6,000 vacation photos (including me!). So over the years, I’ve come up with a few ways I share my travel pictures while also being able to enjoy them myself.

1. social media: facebook, instagram, etc., 2. photo book/journal, 3. blog page, 4. photo collage, social media: facebook, instagram, etc., i’m pretty sure you would have to be living under a rock to not have thought of—or used—number 1. it’s the easiest photo sharing method and will randomly hit the most amount of people. for all of its faults and frustrations, social media has been a great venue for sharing family and vacation photos. and best of all, you get immediate feedback from friends and family., the downside of this is a) not everyone is on social media (i know, hard to believe), and b) three or five years from now you’ll be looking for that picture you really liked from your trip to the bahamas, and will have to scroll through countless pictures of your dog to find it. still, i always love sharing my photos on social media. (follow me on instagram lmorgan_travels ), photo book/journal, personally, i like doing a photo book after every major trip. it takes a little time to choose my favorite pictures, but after that, it’s pretty easy to do. i use two different services for this, depending on how much i’m willing to spend on quality., the first online site i use is snapfish.com . i use them a lot because their platform is super easy to navigate, you can upload tons of pictures at a time, and they have a lot of templates and patterns to create a really nice-looking book. best of all, they often run specials on their photo books, so they aren’t too expensive., my only problem with snapfish is that while the quality is good, it’s not great. and every once in a while, i want great quality. for that i use printique.com (previously adoramapix.com). their quality is excellent, but you do have to pay more for it. when i’m doing a really special book, that’s the site i use. my china book (actually 2 books) i had done in a glossy photo finish that looks very professional. sometimes you can find them running a special on their books, you just have to keep an eye out., i’ll be doing a blog post on how to create a great travel photo book, so check that out when i do, last year before heading out on my trip around the world, i started this travel blog. it was surprisingly an easy thing to do. i did a little research and found a platform that would work perfectly for my purposes. wix.com is one of many web development services available, but i chose this one because it allows even the technologically challenged like myself to create a nice, professional looking site. and what i liked most was it was absolutely free of course, there are up-sells if you are so inclined and i did end up paying a little extra to get my domain name as my website address, but it doesn’t change the look of the site itself. a blog page can combine both your journal and your photos into shareable content for friends, family, and/or the world. you can write as much or as little as you’d like, about anything you’d like..

Create a Photo Collage

So this is really what i wanted to talk about today. creating a work of art for your home that gives you joy and triggers memories every time you look at it. over the years a number of people have commented on my travel photo collage, and then they asked me how they can create one of their own. so here is a step-by-step tutorial on how to do it yourself., materials you will need: canvas inkjet paper, canvas frames, inkjet printer, scissors, and a stapler. that’s it for hanging the collage, you’ll want a ruler, a level, small nails, a hammer, and two-sided tape., the canvas inkjet paper i use is the 8-1/2”x11” from photo paper direct and you can get it on amazon. they sell a 10 pack and a 20 pack. here is a direct link to their product: photo paper direct, the 5”x7” canvas blocks i get from michaels. they have a couple of different kinds, but the one that is 1-1/2” thick is the one i prefer and it is the gallery wrapped heavy duty canvas, level 3 by artist’s loft. the other one is too thin in my opinion, but you may prefer it. they often have a sale on their canvases, so keep an eye out for that. here is a direct link to the artist’s loft canvas: michaels ., choosing your images, of course, you may decide it’s not a travel collage you want to do, but one of your kids, or your cat, or just some of your favorite photos you’ve taken over the years. great there really is no limit to what your collage theme could be. my collage started out as a 4x5. that’s 4 frames across and 5 down. as you can see, it’s grown since then and is now a 6x6., for my collage, i’ve chosen just one picture from some of the different places i’ve been or lived. i picked something that is either iconic about the place, or brings back a specific memory. i try to keep the images fairly simple, in fact, the simpler, the better. if every picture has too much going on in it, the group as a whole will start to look too busy. so when you’re choosing your photos, look for images that have strong graphic lines. you can also do some creative cropping to edit out extraneous information., the other consideration when choosing your photos is contrast, especially if you’ll be toning them like i have. here, you’ll have to consider color less than how it would look as if it were in black and white. sometimes, if you squint your eyes you can get an idea of what it will look like. sometimes a lot of trees, grass and flowers will come across as very flat, whereas white puffy clouds against a blue sky will give you a more dynamic picture. so look for whites, mid-tones, and blacks….typically. i say that and my taj mahal picture is one of my favorites and it pretty much lacks a mid-tone range, so all rules are made to be broken, how to: create your photos and get them ready to print, the first part of your project is all done on the computer. this will be the most time consuming part of the project (or it is for me anyway). choosing your pictures, setting them up to be the right size, and digitally manipulating them to be just the way you want them takes a little time, but it’s well worth it. the first photo you work on will probably take the longest as you figure out your style and how to work through the steps i’ve laid out for you below., i’ve made all of my images duo-chromatic. so if you look closely, you’ll see the photos aren’t actually “in color.” they’re more like black and white photos, but with a sepia (or green, blue gold, red, or blue) tone to them. again, this keeps the collection from looking too chaotic, and keeps it cohesive., if you don’t have a good photo imaging program and/or aren’t very fluent in how to use them , i have written up a how to that goes through the whole process step-by-step. what is a good photo imaging program one that allows you to set up an exact size for your print, allows you to work in layers, and lets you manipulate the color into mono- or duo-tones. if you don’t have one, don’t worry, i’ve recommended a free imaging program for you to use and how to use it. it’s not all that hard, and i’ve included a bunch of pictures to help you out. click here for those instructions., if you’re using photoshop or your own imaging program, here are the steps to create the photo for print:, the end product you’re going for here is basically a 5”x7” image with a 1-1/2” border around it. i’ve also done some extra stuff like turning the image into a duotone, rendering clouds in the border, and softening the edges of the image. you can pick and choose which of these (any or all of them) you want to do., 1. work from a copy of the original image. i almost always recommend this., 2. change your image size to 5”x7” and 300 dpi or ppi., 3. convert your image mode to a grayscale., 4. convert your image mode duotone and choose the colors you want to use., 5. adjust your levels, contrast, sharpness, etc. until you’re happy with the image., 6. make your canvas size 8”x10” with the image centered in the new space., 7. create another level, 8. using the eyedropper tool, choose a light color from the image for the sides of the canvas block., 9. using the paint bucket, fill the new layer. move the layer down so it sits behind the original., 10. optional: filter > render > cloud, 11. adjust the opacity of the new layer until you like how it looks, 12. select the original layer so the selection box is on the edges of the 5x7 image., 13. select > feather > 25 pixels, 14. select > invert, 15. delete. this should soften the edges of the image for you so there isn’t a hard line between that and the new color of the sides of the frame., 16. that’s it, you’re done now you just have to print it up., when you’re all done, it will look like this:.

travel picture collage ideas

How To: Wrap Photo Your Canvas Frames

This is actually the easy part. once you’ve done one, the rest will come together pretty quickly. for this part of the project you’ll need your canvas photo paper, inkjet printer, scissors, and stapler., print your completed images on the photo canvas paper. the white side is the side you’ll want to print on. set up your preferences so that it is printing the best quality print and on the appropriate type of paper. my printer calls it matte specialty paper, but they are all so different. i would recommend just printing one to start and crafting your first block from that to make sure everything turned out the way it should before printing up the rest., to get the canvas to wrap smoothly around the frames, you’ll need to make a few cuts. you’ll do these cuts to each of the corners..

travel picture collage ideas

Now grab your blank frame and wrap the canvas print right over the top of it. Take some time to make sure your edges are falling on the edge of the frame.

Once you feel confident you have the image square on the frame, lay them upside down on the table. without letting the canvas slip out of position, pull it tight across the back and put 3 staples along each side. then tucking the tabs under, staple the short side., if you have a little over hang on the sides, trim that off so you can't see it from the front of the frame..

travel picture collage ideas

That’s it, you’re done! Now all you have to do is hang it up on the wall.

How To: Hang Your Collage

Obviously, you can hang your collage any way you want. if you’re looking for some guidelines, i have my frames hung with 1” of space between them on a grid. you may have a more horizontal space and want to do more across than down, or you may even want to hang them in a more random pattern., once you’ve decided on the pattern, measure out where to put the nail holes. remember that there will be 1-1/2” from the top of the frame to where it will actually sit on the nail. if you are doing a grid and have a long level with a ruler on it, using that is the best and easiest. once you’ve marked your wall, use small nails to set the frames on and add a strip of double-sided tape along the bottom to keep them from slipping out of level., conclusion:, get creative with your collage. have fun and don’t be afraid to put your own twist on things. you may decide to go all black and white, or all sepia, or even keep the original colors as they are. you may decide to not hang it on a grid, but in a more random pattern. i've often thought of getting a world map that is larger and hanging it in there with dots representing where the pictures are from., reusing the same duotone palette for multiple images, i feel gave my collage a more cohesive look – i think for 36 images i used 6 different palettes – but there are no rules when it comes to creating your own work of art. if you do create your own photo collage, i would love to see a picture of the results in the comments section below., it really makes me happy every time i look up and see this wall of memories. and while i still have my daily journal and my photo books that i can take out to show those really interested, the collage is always there, front and center. and i can’t tell you how many people comment on it and like hearing about where each picture is from..

Travel Photo Collage Ideas to Commemorate our Family Vacations

Sharing is caring!

During our stay in Boston, my in-laws were telling me about their retirement travels and showed me the collages they made to commemorate every trip. I thought a Travel Photo Collage is a genius way to remember the fun times you have while traveling! I’ve had large prints made of beautiful photos I have taken while traveling, but I had never made a travel photo collage until now.

If you are like me, you will share your travel photos on Instagram for a couple of weeks and then in a photo album on Facebook. Once you have shared and share on social media, your photos end up on hard drive completely forgotten. Travel collage with family and scenic photos you took during travel gives you a permanent reminder of your vacation. This way you don’t forget the fun times. We added them to the wall collage in the living room. Here are some Wall Collage Ideas.

Travel Photo Collage Ideas

This Nashville Trip was spur of the moment as we evaded a hurricane coming for South Florida. The trip was actually a welcome retreat. It was filled with lots of family time and lots of street art! Nashville is a really fun town! This Summer Memories collage has a ton of fonts to choose from and the option for adding two line of copy. I put the location on top along with details of the trip below with the season, year, and family members that went on the trip.

Family Photo Collage

This collage is filled with family photos from our trip to visit family in Boston. I took some awesome scenic photos of the Boston skyline and the boats in the harbor. I really wanted to focus on my daughter and husband in this collage. The photo of the two of them is my favorite of all time. I am so glad it is in our living room forever! I kept the font simple in this family photo collage. It is called Family + Friends Collage from Minted . You can get in various sizes from 5″ X 7″ to 40″ X 54″.

Table of Contents

Why should you create photo collages?

Contrary to popular belief, creating a photo collage requires much more than just arranging pictures into a grid or frame. In reality, it’s an art form that allows you to express your creativity, celebrate your favorite experiences, and tell a story. Collages are amazing tools to preserve memories, relive your nostalgia, and even celebrate special occasions. From family vacations to wedding and birthday parties, photo collages capture the moments that matter most.

Still on the fence about collages? Even if you’re not looking for fun art projects to make your walls pop, photo collages can help you reflect on your life and appreciate the people who’ve made an impact. Some of the best reasons to create collages include:

Push your creative skills

Want to try out a new art form? Looking to push your creative boundaries? Whether you’re a pro graphic designer or total newbie, photo collages are perfect for anyone. They’re a great way to showcase your artistic abilities and get the creative juices flowing — and it only takes a few minutes to create your own. You can even use photo collages to track your progress as an artist over time.

Add a personal touch

Bored of plain walls? From dorm room decorations to living room centerpieces, photo collages can help you add a personal touch to your space. Design collages with pictures from your big day, photos of your pets, or family photos over the years. No matter what your collage ideas look like, the creative possibilities are endless!

Visualize your goals

Whether you’re trying to live a healthier lifestyle or take more time to relax, photo collages are an amazing way to visualize your goals. All you have to do is find images that represent your vision, arrange them on a grid, and add some motivational quotes to keep yourself inspired.

5 popular types of photo collages

Ready to channel your inner artist? Before we dive into our favorite picture collage ideas , let’s take a step back and discuss the different types of collages. Each type of collage has unique characteristics, so you’ll want to make the best choice for your creative needs. Some of the most popular types of colleges include:

1. Grid collages

When most people think of collages, they’re probably picturing grid collages. Grid collages arrange images in a grid-like pattern, making them a great format for showcasing a collection of images with a consistent theme. For example, if you’re highlighting pictures from your last vacation or showcasing food photography, grid collages are a simple way to piece your pictures together.

2. Blend collages

When you’re ready to turn the creativity up a notch, blend collages can save the day. They blend multiple images together to create a single image, so they’re the perfect choice for creating surreal or dreamlike images. Whether you’re trying to capture a certain mood, upgrade your vision board, or test out your artistic skills, blend collages can help you find inspiration.

Blend photo collages

3. Freeform collages

Freeform collages aren’t your typical collage. When you make a freeform collage, you’ll arrange your images in a nonlinear, creative way based on your artistic vision. These collages are great for showcasing images with a more artistic or abstract theme, such as mixed media or abstract photography. Freeform collages require a bit more creativity and experimentation, but the results can be truly unique and eye-catching.

4. Layered collages

Layered collages, or mixed collages, use layers of different types of media, such as magazine cut-outs, photographs, and newspaper, to create a cohesive collage. If you’re looking for a fun DIY art project or want a creative design to spruce up your space, layered collages can instantly add a touch of creativity.

Layered collages

5. Photo montages

Photo montages involve cutting and gluing pictures together to create new images. Many creators choose to photograph the new image to add a seamless element to their photo collage. The good news? With photo editing tools like Picsart , you can skip the scissors and glue and create your own photo montage online.

  • Additional Resources

Creating a happy and beautiful home is a great way to spark joy in your life. Adding photo keepsakes is one of the fastest and easiest ways to dress up an empty wall or room and fill it with color and creativity — picture collages let you display multiple moments all at once.

Deciding on the perfect style for your space will depend on a number of factors such as theme, size, and room setup. Your personal style preferences will also impact your collage preferences, so consider the look you’re trying to achieve and the finishes you prefer before you commit.

Photo collage and photo prints in home

Wondering what to feature in your photo collage layout? You can choose to display your favorite photos of loved ones or stick to a theme such as a favorite memory or important life event.

Consider where you’ll be hanging the collage as you select the photos and how these memories will impact you while you’re in the room. Displaying family photographs in a home office can help take your mind off work when you need a break, and photos from your favorite vacation can help inspire daydreaming.

Here are some ideas to inspire your photo collage project:

  • Vacation : Choose photos from your favorite vacation or combine moments from multiple trips for a collage that will inspire wanderlust! If you have a travel buddy, order two copies to share the happy memories.
  • Family : Displaying family photographs is a classic and timeless way to make your home feel cozier and lived in. Guests will love looking through your family’s special moments, and you can also give yourself daily reminders of everything you have to be grateful for.
  • Pregnancy : If you’re looking for ways to decorate a nursery as you nest, consider compiling your favorite photos from pregnancy and displaying them in your little one’s future room.
  • Life Achievement : Capturing an important moment in your life is meaningful, so why not commemorate it for years to come? Make a collage of a life achievement, such as a graduation, and put it somewhere you’ll get to enjoy often. An office is a great spot for a framed diploma and graduation photo collage.
  • Wedding or Special Occasion: Some meaningful moments only happen once, such as a wedding or a parent’s 80th birthday. If you’ve recently captured a special occasion on film, create a collage for yourself and other attendees so the memories live on forever.
  • Holiday : Instead of tossing out your family’s Christmas card once the season is over, consider displaying it in a collage with other memories from the holiday season so you can use it as holiday decor next winter.
  • Pet Gallery : Do you have a furry friend or another pet that you hold dear? Display meaningful moments from their life to show how much they’ve grown up with you and your family through the years.

If you’re looking for even more creative themes, check out this list of photo collage ideas for every room .

Pick Your Collage Design Style

Since there are various photo collage options to choose from, it’s important to select a style that fits your space’s needs. Before you buy, consider how much space you’re looking to fill, how you’d like to hang or display your collage, and how much you are willing to spend on your work of art.

Woman hanging up a photo in her home

Below, we’ve listed some of the most popular photo collage styles offered by Shutterfly. We also describe where these styles work best, and details on how to hang or display them in your home.

Photo Collage Poster

If you’re looking for a large photo collage to display on your wall, a beautiful photo collage poster is an easy and affordable option. Like traditional posters, this style is printed onto photo paper and you can choose a glossy or matte finish. You can then mount or frame the poster print to hang it.

Combine up to 30 photos of family and friends, or of your favorite trip or destinations, using easily customizable collage poster templates. You can choose from six sizes and a landscape or portrait orientation. You can also add in backgrounds, different layouts, and texts.

Photo collage posters are perfect for filling large wall spaces in living rooms, bedrooms, and offices. Design a photo grid layout with photo editing tools to customize your own collage. Feel free to add stickers on the online photo collage maker for additional touches. They also make great college dorm room decor!

Canvas Collage

You can display your photo memories in hallways and living rooms with a canvas collage. Your personalized canvas print lets you showcase photos of your favorite memories for all to see.

These eye-catching images are printed from an inkjet printer onto a canvas. From there, you can choose whether to frame the canvas or create an unframed canvas collage using the gallery-wrapping technique.

This cozy and customizable display is perfect for rooms with lots of character such as bedrooms. It’s also great for sentimental spaces such as living rooms and home offices.

Metal Print Collage

This industrial-style, high definition wall art is perfect if you’re looking for a modern photo collage. The frameless design makes this display sleek and clean, perfect for contemporary homes. Incorporate black and white photos for a classic look.

Once you’ve selected your metal print collage, you can choose a matte or glossy finish and start uploading your photos. Metal prints are also treated with ChromaLuxe, which makes the prints moisture, fade, and scratch-resistant. This durability allows the prints to be hung either indoors or outdoors.

If you do have an outdoor space you’re looking to dress up, this is your best option to prevent wear and tear.

Acrylic Collage Prints

These premium, high-quality collages have a crisp and modern look, and their lightweight design makes hanging simple, no frame required. With five sizes to choose from, you can easily create a polished design to fit the needs of your space.

Acrylic photo collages do come with a higher price tag, making them the perfect gift for an anniversary or other special occasion! Customize one online for the special person in your life and they’ll find plenty of places to showcase it.

Variety of framed photos and canvas prints hanging in home

This elevated collage style is perfect for rooms with lots of foot traffic, such as a dining room, entryway, or living room.

Framed Print Collage

If you like the look of traditional framed photos , then this collage style is for you. These prints are displayed on cardstock and then framed for a decorative finish that’s easy to hang.

If you plan to display your collage in a room that already has framed photos hanging or on display, a framed print in a collage style will have a natural flow with your other pieces. This option is also great if you’re combining your collage with other prints and art into a gallery wall.

Choose from a variety of layouts and combine creative elements from our Art Library. We have hundreds of free photos, quotes, and patterns that you can add to your collage to make something truly unique.

Framed print photo collages

Once you’ve chosen your frame style and layout, and added your own personal flair, you can display your framed print in a living area, office, bedroom, or stairwell. There really is no wrong room for this timeless look.

Ceramic Tile & Tabletop Prints

Elevate your photo collage with a ceramic tile display. Your photos are printed onto a ceramic tile and then typically showcased on a metal or wrought-iron easel.

Show off your favorite memories in a unique and sophisticated way. You can even add text and other design elements to your unique tile display.

ceramic tile, tabletop prints, easel back canvas prints

We recommend setting your ceramic tile and or other collage-style tabletop prints in an area with counter space that needs dressing up, such as in a kitchen or dining room area. These tiles also make great gifts for special occasions, and their small size makes them easy to wrap and transport.

DIY Photo Collage

If you prefer DIY projects, you can make a photo collage using photo prints. This is the perfect DIY project to do at home, and you can complete it in an afternoon. Upload your favorite photos to Shutterfly and purchase and print your photos in as little as one hour.

Decide how you’d like to hang your collage and then purchase the appropriate materials. You can easily tape or glue prints to a piece of cardboard and then frame it, or you can elevate your look by mounting photos on a unique hard surface such as a piece of driftwood.

Other creative ideas include making a photo collage on a coffee table, vintage door, hanger, or wall.

3. Heart-Shaped Collage

5. Ombre Photo Collage

6. Clothespin Collage

Clothespins, twine, and a piece of trim come together to create this awesome DIY photo collage with a rustic touch. Customizable to fit any size wall, the collage securely keeps photos in place but also makes it easy to switch them out as needed.

7. Rustic Window Collage

8. Macrame Collage

travel picture collage ideas

9. Photo Frame Collage

Creating a collage using photo frames can be tricky because it’s hard to visualize what your frames will look like on the wall. However, you can simplify the job and ensure your photo collection fits in any space when you use craft paper to design and rearrange until the collage is perfect.

travel picture collage ideas

10. Clipboard Collage

While you can buy store-bought clipboards for this DIY photo collage, you have more control over the finished look when you build your own using distressed, stained planks and clips from a crafts store. Because photos aren’t permanently affixed, you can change them whenever you’d like.

travel picture collage ideas

11. Christmas Tree Collage

travel picture collage ideas

12. Fairy Light Collage

Fairy lights are a fun and whimsical way to decorate nearly any space, but when you arrange them so you can hang pictures, you’ll create a DIY photo collage that you can enjoy day and night. travel picture collage ideas

13. Grid Style Photo Collage

If you fancy yourself a perfectionist, you’ll love the look of this grid-style photo collage. Arranging photos of the same size in clean, neat lines offers a modern look that’s perfect for any space. You can create this nice look with just foam core board, mod podge, and your favorite photos.

travel picture collage ideas

travel picture collage ideas

16. Wood-Backed Collage

With some wood and a little paint, you can create a gorgeous, rustic backdrop for your photo collage. Pro tip: To give the wood a weathered look, just lightly sand it once the paint is dry. Use clips to hold your photos, and you can change them out as often as you’d like.

Travelers unite! Whether you travel the country or the world, you’ll love reminiscing about your trips when you look at this lovely map-shaped DIY photo collage. This type of collage works best if you have a bigger space to work with as you can really see the detail of your exciting photos.

24. DIY Photo Collage Clock

Form meets function in this creative DIY photo collage. Build your own free-standing clock with a piece of thin wood and a clock kit, or go all out by transforming a section of your wall into the clock. Either way, photos as the background or on the hours make this a piece that’s all yours.

 25. Washi Tape Collage

We love this washi tape photo collage idea because it allows you to play with colors and patterns. You’re free to use as many designs as you’d like, or you could create a theme by sticking with a particular color palette. As a bonus, you can easily remove the tape and try something new whenever you’d like.

Tips for Making the Perfect Handmade Photo Collage

It doesn’t matter whether you’re super craftsy or not — creating a homemade picture collage can be as easy or as elaborate as you’d like. However, whichever route you take, there are some things to think about, such as style, positioning, and size.

Choosing a collage style

The very first step in your DIY photo collage project will be choosing a style. Do you want to arrange your photos in a shape, such as a heart or moon? Is there a certain look or feel that you’re aiming for? Also consider your skill set and how much time you have to dedicate to the project. For example, if you don’t have much time nor a steady hand, you may want to opt for a wall decal rather than painting a family tree.

Figuring out positioning

In addition to determining where you want your collage, you also need to think about how large it will be and its exact placement. Also think about the size of the photos you’ll use for your project. For example, 8 x 10 photos are more appropriate for a large collage, while wallet-size photos are perfect for use with a letter, number, clock, or map-style collage.

Marking out space

Once you’ve decided the size and placement of your collage, it’s imperative that you do a dry run with paper cutouts, pencil, twine, or other temporary placeholders to be sure that the picture in your head can be properly transferred to your wall, staircase, or other space. Marking out your space will also ensure that you stay on track and that your collage comes out just as you planned.

Choosing frames or going frameless

No matter which DIY photo collage style you choose, you generally have the freedom to decide whether you’ll use frames ( Amazon have a great selection ) or go frameless. Choosing one or the other typically falls to preference, but you may find that frames give a more polished look to your project. Frames will also keep photos from curling with age and weather. On the other hand, some collage styles demand that you go frameless. For example, the clothespin ( these ones are bright and colorful ), fairy light, map, and washi tape wall collage ideas we’ve suggested before won’t work if you use frames. For these projects, try to print your photos on thicker paper for extra durability.

Hanging your photo collage

When deciding how to hang your photo collage, you need to consider the surface you’re working with and the composition of your collage. Heavier collages may need wall anchors to ensure they don’t fall. But if you’re renting or otherwise can’t screw things into the wall, you need to look into temporary measures. The washi tape project we suggest above offers a perfect solution: Washi tape peels away easily, so you can remove your collage at any time. You can also use Command Hooks which feature a sticky backing that removes without damaging surfaces. The brand even offers cute spring clips that look just like small clothespins.

Why not combine these fabulous photo collages with a DIY hat rack !

Honestly? I was apprehensive and was hoping that it wasnt going to let me down or that the quality wasnt going to be as good as id hoped...well I need not have worried. Absolutely stunning. Honestly its absolutely amazing. The picture is just wow, and my Dad whom I got it for as a birthday present with a selection of his drawings displayed as a present was blown away. It is amazing. Review in United Kingdom

I am so impressed with photo-on-canvas! I wanted a 75-100 picture montage so I could use and see all the pictures I take on my phone. I love the way I could upload the pictures from my phone then save my creation and then login and view it on my laptop to edit and check the alignments etc. I'd been looking for something like this for ages. The delivery cost of £20 added quite a bit more to the final total but then to see the work that went into the delivery it was worth it! I was updated every step of the way and could see the route my parcel travelled and it was delivered safely to me on the time and day stated. It's already on my wall pride of place now thank you!!

Top 15 picture collage ideas

1. the chronological path.

Imagine a collage that celebrates the passage of time, like a visual autobiography. Perfect for showcasing a special occasion like a child's growth, a relationship milestone, or a family vacation series.

For this collage, envision a clean and minimalist layout. You can use similar frames or a grid format for a cohesive look. Consider black and white photos for a timeless feel. As you arrange the photos chronologically, starting from the earliest memory to the most recent, you'll be creating a visual journey that tells a story.

Here's how you can personalize it:

Childhood memories: start with a baby picture in the center, surrounded by photos from different stages of your child's life. Include school milestones, achievements, and family outings.

Love story collage: begin with your first encounter, followed by dates, proposals, and wedding photos. Add captions like "First Date – 2020" or "Happily Ever After" to enhance the narrative.

Vacation memories: begin with travel preparations like packing photos, followed by arrival pictures, scenic shots, and fun activities. Include a small map or souvenir ticket as an embellishment to bring the experience to life.

2. The themed collage

Embrace vibrant colors and playful patterns to create a collage that bursts with energy, reflecting a specific theme.

Use photos with bright colors like beach scenes, pool parties, and ice cream cones. This theme practically begs for colorful frames in various sizes. You can even create a background with patterned scrapbook paper to further amplify the playful mood. Play with different photo sizes and shapes to add visual interest.

Here are some personalization ideas to get you started:

  • Family adventures: include photos from hiking trips, amusement parks, or road trips. Use a map background and mark the locations you visited with tiny pins or stickers to create an interactive element.
  • Friendship celebration: fill the collage with pictures of you and your friends laughing, celebrating birthdays, or enjoying hobbies together. Add cut-out hearts or friendship symbols crafted from colorful paper to showcase the bond you share.

3. Story collage

This photo collage goes beyond just pictures; it tells a story through a carefully curated sequence.

Start with pictures of decorating, followed by guests arriving, cake cutting, and happy moments. You can add a journaling card at the bottom with a birthday message to personalize the experience.

Here are some examples to inspire you:

A first hike: begin with photos of packing your backpack, reaching the trailhead, scenic views during the hike, and a final picture at the top with a sense of accomplishment.

A culinary creation: showcase the process of making a favorite dish. Start with gathering ingredients, chopping vegetables, cooking, and finally, the finished product with a journaling card listing the recipe to not only capture the visual aspect but also preserve the delicious memory.

4. Mother nature

Embrace the beauty of nature by incorporating natural textures and earthy tones into your collage.

You can use wooden frames (stained or natural) for a rustic touch. Decorate with pine cones and small twigs to further connect the collage to the natural world. Consider using canvas or burlap fabric as the background material instead of traditional mounting paper for an added touch of texture.

5. The whimsical one

For the whimsical spirit, let's create a collage that defies expectations and embraces the fantastical.

Imagine a world where reality bends, and imagination takes flight. Here, photos can be manipulated, embellished, and combined to create a scene straight out of a fairytale. Think Alice in Wonderland meets your favorite memories.

Start by gathering photos that lend themselves to a touch of whimsy. This could be anything from playful portraits with silly expressions to everyday objects captured from an unusual angle.

Next comes the transformation. Use photo editing tools or good old-fashioned crafting techniques to add a touch of magic. Perhaps a mischievous grin is added to a normally stoic cat in your picture, or maybe a hot air balloon floats serenely above your childhood home.

For the collage itself, consider a free-flowing, organic layout. Ditch the conventional grid and let your photos dance across the background. The background itself can be a canvas for your whimsy. Paint splatters, stardust glitter, or even hand-drawn illustrations can provide the perfect backdrop for your fantastical scene.

Finally, the embellishments! Buttons, feathers, sequins, or even miniature figurines can add a delightful 3D element and further enhance the whimsical narrative.

6. The minimalist masterpiece

Embrace the power of simplicity with a photo collage that celebrates a single color palette. This approach creates a sense of sophistication and allows the photos themselves to truly shine.

Concept: choose a dominant color, like black and white, sepia tones, or a specific pastel shade. Select photos that predominantly feature that color or can be edited to seamlessly blend into the chosen palette.

Style: opt for a clean and uncluttered layout. Depending on the desired effect, arrange the photos in a symmetrical or asymmetrical pattern. Consider using square or rectangular frames in the same color or material for a cohesive look. For a minimalist touch, mount the collage on a background of the same color.

Here are some more ideas to make it personal:

Black and white cityscapes: capture the architectural grandeur of a city with black and white photos of iconic buildings, bustling streets, and historical landmarks.

A sepia-toned childhood: showcase nostalgic memories from your childhood with sepia-toned photos of family outings, birthday parties, or first days of school.

Pastel delights: celebrate the joy of spring or summer with a pastel-themed collage. Include photos of blooming flowers, refreshing drinks, and vibrant sunsets.

7. A celebration of textures

Engage multiple senses by incorporating various textures into your photo collage. This adds depth and dimension, making the artwork more interactive and engaging.

Select photos that showcase interesting textures, such as cobblestone streets, soft fabrics, or the rough bark of a tree. You can also integrate non-photographic elements like fabric scraps, sandpaper, or dried leaves.

Depending on the textures you choose, experiment with a free-flowing layout or a grid format. A grid could be ideal for showcasing diverse textures in a balanced way, while a free-flowing layout could work well for natural textures like leaves or pebbles. A neutral background, like white or black, can make the textures stand out.

You can tell a number of stories, like:

A culinary adventure: capture the textures of your favorite meals in your collage. Include photos of flaky pastries, fluffy pancakes, or glistening fruits combined with actual fabric scraps resembling napkins or textured paper resembling parchment.

A day at the beach: combine photos of the smooth sand, the rough texture of seashells, and the woven texture of a beach towel to bring the coastal experience to life. Include small pieces of real sand or crushed seashells for a truly tactile experience.

A walk in the woods: showcase the different textures encountered on a forest walk. Include photos of smooth stones, rough bark, and soft moss alongside actual dried leaves and twigs for a multisensory experience.

8. The photo and text collage

Combine the visual power of photographs with the emotional impact of words to create a narrative-rich collage.

Choose photos that tell a story or evoke a certain emotion. Pair them with handwritten snippets, quotes, song lyrics, or short poems that enhance their meaning and create a personal connection.

Experiment with layout and presentation. You can integrate the text directly onto the photos using photo editing software or handwrite them on separate pieces of paper before mounting them alongside the pictures. Consider using a variety of fonts and colors to add emphasis and visual interest.

A travel journal collage: combine photos from your travels with short descriptions of each location, funny anecdotes, or reflections on the experience.

A love story in words and images: tell the story of your relationship through photos and handwritten quotes or song lyrics that capture significant moments.

A day in the life collage: document a typical day in your life with photos and corresponding descriptions or short phrases to showcase your daily routine.

9. The single photo collage

Sometimes, a single powerful image deserves its own dedicated space. In this collage, the focus is entirely on one photograph, allowing it to tell a story or evoke an emotion with maximum impact.

Choose a photo that holds significant meaning or captures a moment of pure beauty. It could be a landscape shot, a portrait, or a still life with a hidden depth of detail.

Here, the key is to elevate the chosen photograph. Consider using a large frame or mounting it on a textured background like canvas or wood. You can also incorporate subtle embellishments that complement the image, like dried flowers for a nature photo or miniature gears for a picture of a clock.

10. Beyond the frame

Break free from the confines of a flat surface and create a multidimensional collage that pops out from the wall.

This is where imagination takes center stage. Use various materials and techniques to add depth and dimension to your collage. Experiment with layering photos, using boxes or small shelves to create mini-displays for specific pictures.

You can also incorporate found objects, ribbons, and other embellishments to enhance the narrative.

A childhood treehouse: create a miniature treehouse using cardboard boxes or wooden shelves. Decorate it with photos of your childhood adventures and add miniature furniture like tiny swings or ladders.

A family recipe box: craft a decorative box from cardboard or wood and adorn it with photos of family members enjoying meals together. Inside the box, include handwritten recipe cards, adding a touch of practicality to the sentimental collage.

A travel souvenir display: gather mementos from your travels like postcards, ticket stubs, or small trinkets. Arrange them on a mounted piece of wood or canvas, incorporating photos of the locations visited. This creates a personalized travel memory board that goes beyond the typical photo collage.

11. The silhouette story

This photo collage uses the power of silhouettes to create a dramatic and evocative narrative. Utilize photos with strong backlighting or strategically edit photos to create clear silhouettes. Play with the contrast between light and shadow to tell a story or evoke an emotion.

Try layering silhouettes on a colored background. You can use a single color or create a gradient effect for added visual interest. Consider incorporating negative space (the empty space around the silhouettes) as part of the storytelling.

12. The crowdsourced collection

Create a unique and sentimental collage by gathering photos from multiple contributors. This might involve a physical collage or a digital one, depending on your preference. Experiment with different layout styles to showcase all the contributed photos cohesively.

A birthday celebration: ask friends and family to send you photos of their favorite moments from a birthday party and create a collage showcasing the shared experience.

A graduation milestone: gather photos from classmates, professors, and family members to capture the collective memories of a graduation ceremony.

A team project: compile photos from team members documenting different stages of a project, creating a collaborative collage that celebrates the journey and the final outcome.

13. The accordion collage

Make a unique photo story with printed photos on sturdy paper, scissors, glue or strong double-sided tape, and optional decorative embellishments. This format unfolds the story or theme one photo at a time.

Print your chosen photos on cardstock or sturdy paper. Experiment with photo sizes and shapes – squares, rectangles, or even triangles. Fold each photo accordion-style, creating a series of connected panels. You can then glue or attach the folded photos side-by-side to a larger backing board.

This format is great for telling a story chronologically, like a travel adventure or a growing child. Additionally, you can showcase a single location from different angles, such as a historical building or a city street. If you're looking for an artistic approach, try experimenting with black-and-white photos or other creative techniques.

14. Going retro

To create a vintage collage of Polaroid photos, you will need photos printed in a square format, preferably with a white border. You will also need scissors or a craft paper cutter, as well as glue or strong double-sided tape. Decorative embellishments like twine, clothespins, or mini washi tape can add extra charm, but these are optional.

Print your chosen photos in a square format with a white border, mimicking the classic Polaroid look.  Alternatively, you can use existing Polaroid photos if you have them. Cut out the photos and arrange them on a flat surface. Consider using a grid layout or a more whimsical, overlapping arrangement.

Here are some tips for hanging your photos:

Use twine and clothespins to attach the photos to a backing board for a hanging display.

To add a personal touch without damaging the photos, use mini washi tape or stickers.

This format is ideal for showcasing a specific event, a group of friends, or a collection of travel mementos.

15. The mood board collage

This collage does not depict any particular event or person. It aims to capture a specific mood or feeling. The main focus is on choosing photos and imagery that can evoke a particular emotion, such as "joy," "adventure," "calmness," or "inspiration."

Embrace diversity in your collage-making by not limiting yourself to personal photos. You can cut out images from magazines, travel brochures, or even greeting cards that resonate with the chosen mood.

Play with color and texture to set the tone for your collage. For instance, incorporate vibrant, joyful yellows, calming blues, serene greens, or black-and-white photos for a nostalgic or mysterious feel. Additionally, you can add textured elements like fabric scraps or dried flowers to further enhance the mood.

Let your intuition guide you in the process of creating a balanced composition. This collage format allows for a freestyle approach, so experiment with different layouts, layering photos, and creating negative space for a harmonious composition.

To achieve this, you will need a mix of personal photos, magazine clippings, or printed images. You'll also need scissors or a craft paper cutter, glue or strong double-sided tape, and a large backing board made of cardboard, canvas, or foam board. If you wish to decorate the backing board, you can use paint or decorative paper.

This type of collage has a dual purpose. It can be used as a vision board to help you set and achieve personal goals or as a mood board to inspire creative projects. You can use it to capture a specific season, a favorite book, or a song that evokes strong emotions. Creating a collage is a great way to explore your creativity and experiment with various design styles.
