What are the charges and fees?

Full details of our charges and fees can be found in our   Travel Money Card terms and conditions .

The Post Office Travel Money Card is intended for use in the countries where the national currency is the same as the currencies on your card. If the currency falls outside of any of the 22 we offer on your card, you’ll be charged a cross-border fee. For example, using your card in Brazil will incur a cross-border fee because we do not offer the Brazilian real as a currency.

Cross border fees are set at 3% and are only applicable when you use your currency in a country other than the ones we offer.

For more information on cross border fees, please visit our cross border payment page.

There are no charges when using your card in retailers in the country of the currency on the card. This means that a €20 purchase in Spain would cost you €20 and will be deducted from your euro balance.

To avoid unnecessary charges to your card, wherever asked, you should always choose to pay for goods or withdraw cash in the currencies of your card. For example, if you are using the card in Spain you should always choose to pay in euro if offered a choice; choosing to pay in sterling (GBP) in this example would allow the merchant to exchange your transaction from euro to sterling. This would mean your transaction has gone through two exchange rate conversions, which will increase the total cost of your transaction.

For loads in Great British pounds, a load commission fee of 1.5% will apply (min £3, max £50). A monthly maintenance fee of £2 will be deducted from your balance 12 months after your card expires. Expiration dates can be found on your TMC; all cards are valid for up to 3 years.

A cash withdrawal fee will be charged when withdrawing cash from a UK Post Office branch or from any ATM globally that accepts Mastercard.

We have listed all available currencies and their associated withdrawal limits and charges below:

Apple Pay security and privacy overview

Find out how Apple protects your personal information, transaction data and payment information when you use Apple Pay.

Apple Pay allows you to make easy, secure and private transactions in shops, in apps and on the web. You can also send and receive money with friends and family using Apple Cash (US only). And with contactless rewards cards in Wallet, you can receive and redeem rewards when you pay using Apple Pay.

Apple Pay is designed with your security and privacy in mind, making it a simpler and more secure way to pay than using your physical credit, debit and prepaid cards. Apple Pay uses security features built in to the hardware and software of your device to help protect your transactions. In addition, to use Apple Pay, you must have a passcode set on your device and, optionally, Face ID or Touch ID .

Apple Pay is also designed to protect your personal information. Apple doesn’t store or have access to the original credit, debit or prepaid card numbers that you use with Apple Pay. And when you use Apple Pay with credit, debit or prepaid cards, Apple doesn't retain any transaction information that can be tied back to you. Your transactions stay between you, the merchant or developer, and your bank or card issuer.

When you add credit, debit, prepaid or travel cards

When you add a credit, debit, prepaid or travel card (where available) to Apple Pay, information that you enter on your device is encrypted and sent to Apple servers. If you use the camera to enter the card information, the information is never saved on your device or photo library.

Apple decrypts the data, determines your card’s payment network and re-encrypts the data with a key that only your payment network (or any providers authorised by your card issuer for provisioning and token services) can unlock.

Information that you provide about your card, whether certain device settings are enabled and device use patterns – such as the percentage of the time the device is in motion and the approximate number of calls you make per week – may be sent to Apple to determine your eligibility to enable Apple Pay. Information may also be provided by Apple to your card issuer, payment network or any providers authorised by your card issuer to enable Apple Pay, to determine the eligibility of your card, to set up your card with Apple Pay and to prevent fraud.

After your card has been approved, your bank, your bank’s authorised service provider or your card issuer creates a device-specific Device Account Number, encrypts it and sends it along with other data (such as the key used to generate dynamic security codes that are unique to each transaction) to Apple. The Device Account Number can’t be decrypted by Apple but is stored in the Secure Element – an industry-standard, certified chip designed to store your payment information safely – on your device. Unlike with usual credit or debit card numbers, the card issuer can prevent its use on a magnetic stripe card, over the phone or on websites. The Device Account Number in the Secure Element is isolated from iOS, watchOS and macOS, is never stored on Apple servers and is never backed up to iCloud.

Apple doesn’t store or have access to the original card numbers of credit, debit or prepaid cards that you add to Apple Pay. Apple Pay only stores a portion of your actual card numbers and a portion of your Device Account Numbers, along with a card description. Your cards are associated with your Apple ID to help you add and manage your cards across your devices.

In addition, iCloud secures your Wallet data – like passes and transaction information – by encrypting it when it's sent over the Internet and storing it in an encrypted format when it's kept on Apple's servers. You can disable iCloud support on your device by going to Settings > [your name] > iCloud and turning off Wallet. Find out more about how iCloud stores and protects your data .

When you use Apple Pay in shops

When you use Apple Pay in stores that accept contactless payments, Apple Pay uses Near Field Communication (NFC) technology between your device and the payment terminal. NFC is an industry-standard, contactless technology that’s designed to only work across short distances. If your iPhone is on and detects an NFC field, it will present you with your default card. To send your payment information, you must authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode (except when you use Express Mode with a payment or travel card). With Face ID or with Apple Watch, you must double-click the side button when the device is unlocked to activate your default card for payment.

After you've authenticated your transaction, the Secure Element provides your Device Account Number and a dynamic, transaction-specific security code to the shop’s point of sale terminal, along with additional information needed to complete the transaction. Again, neither Apple nor your device sends your actual payment card number. Before they approve the payment, your bank, card issuer or payment network can verify your payment information by checking the dynamic security code to make sure it’s unique and tied to your device.

When you use Apple Pay within apps or on the web

When you use an app or a website that uses Apple Pay in iOS, watchOS or macOS, the app or website can check if you have Apple Pay enabled on that device. You can manage this option in Settings > Safari on your iOS device, and in the Privacy tab in Safari preferences on your Mac.

To securely transmit your payment information when you pay in apps or on the web, Apple Pay receives your encrypted transaction and re-encrypts it with a developer-specific key before the transaction information is sent to the developer or payment processor. This key helps ensure that only the app or the website that you're purchasing from can access your encrypted payment information. Websites must verify their domain every time they offer Apple Pay as a payment option. Like with in-store payments, Apple sends your Device Account Number to the app or website along with the transaction-specific dynamic security code. Neither Apple nor your device sends your actual payment card number to the app.

Apple retains anonymous transaction information, including the approximate purchase amount, app developer and app name, approximate date and time, and whether the transaction was completed successfully. Apple uses this data to improve Apple Pay and other products and services. Apple also requires apps and websites in Safari that use Apple Pay to have a privacy policy that you can view, which governs their use of your data.

When you use Apple Pay on your iPhone or Apple Watch to confirm a purchase from your Mac in Safari, your Mac and the authorising device communicate over an encrypted channel via Apple servers. Apple doesn’t retain any of this information in a form that personally identifies you. You can disable the ability to use Apple Pay on your Mac in Settings on your iPhone. Go to Wallet & Apple Pay and turn off Allow Payments On Mac.

When you add and use rewards cards with Apple Pay transactions in shops

When you add contactless rewards cards to Wallet , all the information is stored on your device and encrypted with your passcode. You can choose to have a rewards card automatically presented for use in the merchant’s shops when you make an Apple Pay purchase (or you can turn off this setting in Wallet). Apple requires all information sent to the payment terminal to be encrypted. Rewards card information is only sent with your authorisation. And Apple doesn’t receive any information about the rewards transaction other than what's displayed on the pass. iCloud backs up your cards and keeps your rewards cards up to date on multiple devices.

If you sign up for a rewards card and provide information to the merchant, such as your name, postcode, email address and phone number, Apple will receive notification of the sign-up, but the information that you share will be sent directly from your device to the merchant and is treated in accordance with the merchant’s privacy policy.

If you lose your device and need to suspend or remove cards from Apple Pay

If you turned on Find My on your device, you can suspend Apple Pay by placing your device in Lost Mode instead of immediately cancelling your cards. If you find your device, you can re-enable Apple Pay.

You can go to your Apple ID account page to remove the ability to make payments with the credit, debit and prepaid cards that you were using with Apple Pay on the device.

Erasing your device remotely using Find My also removes the ability to pay with the cards that you were using with Apple Pay. Your credit, debit and prepaid cards will be suspended from Apple Pay by your bank, your bank’s authorised service provider, your card issuer or your issuer's authorised service provider, even if your device is offline and not connected to a mobile or Wi-Fi network. If you find your device, you can add the cards again using Wallet.

In addition, you can call your bank or issuer to suspend your credit, debit or prepaid cards from Apple Pay. The ability to use rewards cards stored on your device is only removed if or when your device is online.

When you send and receive money with Apple Cash (US only)

Apple Cash allows you to send and receive money with other people in Messages and Wallet. When you receive money, it’s added to your Apple Cash card that can be used to make purchases using Apple Pay in shops, in apps and on the web. Person-to-person payments and the Apple Cash card are services provided by Apple’s partner bank, Green Dot Bank, member FDIC. You can learn how Green Dot Bank protects your information by reviewing their privacy policy .

When you set up Apple Cash , the same information as when you add a credit or debit card may be shared with Green Dot Bank and with Apple Payments Inc. Apple created Apple Payments Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary and licensed money transmitter, to protect your privacy. Your Apple Cash account registration information (name, address), balance, transaction amounts and who you send money to or receive money from are stored separately by Apple Payments Inc. in a way that the rest of Apple doesn’t know. Your personal data stored with Apple Payments Inc. is used only to provide you services that you request, for troubleshooting, regulatory purposes and to prevent fraud.

To verify your identity, you may be asked to provide information, including your name and address to the bank and their identity verification service provider. This information is only used for fraud prevention and to comply with US financial regulations. Your name and address is securely stored by the partner bank and Apple Payments Inc., but any additional information that you’re asked to provide – such as National Insurance number, date of birth, answers to questions (e.g. confirm street name you have previously lived on) or a copy of your government ID – can’t be read by Apple.

When you use Apple Cash – including when you add money or transfer money to a bank account – our partner bank, Apple, and Apple Payments Inc. may use and store information about you, your device and your account to process the transaction, for troubleshooting, to help prevent fraud and to comply with financial regulations. Apple may provide Apple Payments Inc. with approximate use patterns from your device about how frequently you communicate with that person by phone, email or in Messages. The content of your communication isn’t collected. This information is stored for a limited time, and in such a way that it is not linked to you unless the associated transaction is determined to require further analysis due to suspicious activity.

More information about using Apple Pay with your travel card

If you designate a travel card that you've added to Apple Pay as an Express Travel card, you can pay and travel without having to use Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode first. You can manage Express Transit on your iPhone in Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay, and on your Apple Watch via the Apple Watch app.

You can temporarily suspend travel cards by using Find My to place your device into Lost Mode. Or you can remove travel cards by erasing your device remotely using Find My or by removing all cards from your Apple ID account page . Travel cards can't be removed or suspended if your device is offline.

In the unlikely event that you misplace your card, you can suspend the card by giving us a call on +61 (2) 8974 0856. We can make arrangements to transfer you money via Western Union. Additionally, as the card isn't linked to your financial institution, you can rest assure that if someone has it, they can't access your accounts back home.

Easy - login to my.travelmoneyoz.com and from here, click on Account Details in the menu bar. From here, you're able to edit your email address, phone number and address. For help with changing anything us, give us a call on 13 61 95, or +61 (2) 8974 0856 from overseas.

No, Currency Pass works just like your every day debit card. You can simply tap and go for every day purchases or withdraw funds from an ATM. The only time you really need to be online is if you want to manage your funds via our easy to use app or website.

Currency Pass works just like your every day debit cards. You can use it for tap and go purchases, paywave and online shopping. But we've made it just a little bit better by being able to load up to 10 different currencies so that when you're travelling you can spend the local currency and always know how much it's costing you.

Travel Money Oz Currency Pass is a debit card. You can only spend the funds that are loaded onto the card. The best part is, you won't get caught out with hefty credit card fees and interest. You're only spending your money.

We're pretty confident we have most destinations covered however Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Syria and Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk regions are affected by sanctions, which means that your Currency Card will be declined if you try to use it in these countries. Additionally, all Mastercards will not work at Russian merchants or ATMs. The list of countries in which the Currency Card does not work will be updated from time to time, so please check back here before travelling.

  • How do I get a Currency Pass?
  • How much will a card cost me to purchase?
  • Can you buy a Currency Pass if you're under 18?
  • Can I get a second card?
  • What do I do if I can't buy a Currency Pass online?

Getting a Currency Pass is easy. You can order a card online via our website (this will take up to 14 business days to receive in the mail) or simply visit one of our stores to take one away immediately.

Our Currency Pass is free to buy - just make sure it's loaded with minimum $20 to get started. We don't charge any fees for issuing and loading your card in store either. (Although, merchant fees will apply if you are using a credit card to load funds). More info on fees and limits can be found here.

Yes, you can get a Currency Card if you are under 18. You will however, need to complete your identity verification in person at your nearest Travel Money Oz store. Only Australian Passport or Drivers License will be accepted as valid ID.

Unfortunately we can only give 1 x card per Currency Pass account.

To buy a Currency Pass online, you must verify your identity against several government sources (100point ID check). If your identification doesn't meet the online requirements, you still may be able to buy a Currency Pass in store if you're an Australian resident. Simply bring in a valid photographic Australian Passport, or Australian state driving license and we can set you up on the spot.

TOP TIPS WHEN USING YOUR CARD

  • How do I use my Currency Pass overseas?
  • What do I do if an overseas vendor asks if I want to pay in AUD?

Always select credit when making a transaction (including at ATMs!) and if given the option, pay in the local currency of the destination vs AUD, providing it's loaded on your card. This avoids you paying extra conversion fees (this is often called Dynamic Currency Conversion).

We recommend always paying in the local currency if it’s loaded on your Currency Pass (local currency of the destination). In some situations, ATMs and retailers may offer ‘Dynamic Currency Conversion’ (payment in your home currency). This however, simply allows them to dictate their own exchange rate and may result in you being charged fees associated with a foreign transaction. Spending in the local currencies means you always know what you're paying and have greater control over your funds.

REGISTERING

  • How do I register online?
  • What do I do if I'm unable to register my account?

Follow these steps...

  • Go to the register page.
  • Enter your details into the registration form and press next.
  • Create your password and security questions.

  • How do I activate my card?

Just like your regular bank cards, for security reasons Currency Cards need to be activated once you've received it. To do this, follow the below prompts...

Call Mastercrd on 1800 098 231 or on +61 (2) 8974 0856 from outside of Australia

Press 1 to hear the card services line in English

Press 4 for Card activation or PIN Assistance

Follow the prompts and enter your card details

Your card is now active, continue to listen and follow the call options to hear your new PIN number

LOGIN/PASSWORD

  • How do I log in to the portal?
  • Who do I contact if I'm locked out of my Currency Pass account?

Easy - go to the login page and enter in your email and password. If this isn't proving to be easy, and you're having a bit of trouble, give us a call on 136195 (or +61 (2) 8974 0856 if you're overseas).

No stress - head to my.travelmoneyoz.com and select 'I have forgotten my password' to reset your account. If you're still having trouble, give us a call on 13 61 95, or if calling overseas +61 (2) 8974 0856

  • How do I reveal my PIN?
  • How do I change my PIN?

You've got 2 x options..

1. By phone - Give us a call on 136 195, or if calling from overseas +61 (2) 8974 0856. From here, press 11 to hear the card services line in English and then press 2 for Card Activation or PIN Assistance. Follow the prompts and enter you card details to hear your current card balance.

2. Reveal via desktop (note this won't work as well on mobile!) - Log into the my.travelmoneyoz.com portal. Click on the Currency Card link at the top of the screen. Reveal PIN is the 5th option.

You can change your PIN number at select RediATM's... but, not all RediATM's support this, so to save you time and effort - log into the Currency Pass portal, click on Currency Card and through to Change my PIN, you'll see the ATM finder where you can type in your suburb or postcode to find your nearest RediATM.

LOADING & ACCESSING MONEY

  • How can I load my card?
  • What currencies can I load?
  • What is this SMS I need to get to reload?
  • I'm get an error message when I try to reload, what should I do?
  • How do I change my card's default currency?
  • What is the maximum/minimum amount I can load on my card?
  • How long does it take for funds to be loaded onto my card?
  • What happens if I run out of funds in one currency, but have other currencies available?
  • How do I transfer between currencies?
  • How much will it cost for me to reload my card?

You have a few options. You can load money onto your card using the Travel Money Oz app, or by logging into your account on our website - from here, you can load via Debit or Credit Card (including using Google or Apple Pay), or via Bank Transfer (using Poli for secure and instant bank transfers), or you can load your Currency Pass in any of our stores nationwide. You can also reload your card with BPAY at any time from your online banking account (2-3 days for BPAY transfers to appear).

Up to 10! They include... USD, EUR, GBP, NZD, CAD, HKD, JPY, SGD, THB and AUD.

If you're heading somewhere and their currency isn't one of the above, no stress - load in AUD (or any of the others) and withdraw the local currency from an ATM. Or swipe/tap as normal and it will convert as you go with each transaction.

We use extra authentication as a security measure when you reload funds. The SMS is sent from your bank, not us. If you can't receive the SMS, you'll need to contact your bank to update your details. As an alternative, try reloading using BPAY, however, if we're a new payee, it's possible your bank still may need to send a SMS.

Received an error during your reload? This means your card has not been loaded (even if you see the funds pending in your bank balance). Please contact us via [email protected] before you re-attempt your transaction.

To start, make sure you're logged into the Currency Pass portal then...

Select Currency Card in the top menu, and Currency Card Settings

Then click on the set default currency button

Once this change is made, any unquoted Bank transfer or BPAY loads will land in the default purse.

The minimum amount you can load is $20 (AUD) but who are you kidding, you'll be spending alot more than that on your holiday.

The maximum amount your can load onto your Currency Pass in one load is $10,000 (AUD). If you need more just speak to us in store.

How quickly do you need the money? Credit / debit card transfers are instantly available. Bank transfers will take 1 business day (Mon-Fri) and prior to 2pm AEST. BPAY will take a little longer, this is on average 3 business days. Alternatively, come and see us in store at one of our 140+ locations for more immediate assistance.

If a purchase cannot be completed because there are not enough funds in that currency on your card and you do have other currencies, the card will automatically convert other currencies to complete the purchase. The transaction will be split across 2 or more currencies and will appear that way on your statement. Read more about this in our PDS.

Log into your account by clicking on the login/register button at the top of the Travel Money Oz website. Once you're in, click on the Currency Card tab, and select Transfer between currencies. Select the currency you wish to transfer from, and to. From here you can enter the amount you wish to transfer. You will then see the amount of the new currency, along with the rate in which the transfer is completed. Don't forget to click "Confirm Transfer" to complete your transfer.

Please refer to our Fees for more information.

BALANCE & TRANSACTION HISTORY

  • How do I check my balance?
  • How do I check my transaction history?
  • Can I use my card for a pre-authorisation?
  • Why are there pending transactions?

You can check your balance by logging into my.travelmoneyoz.com or through our app. Your balance will be on the home page once you've logged in. Or, give us a call on 13 61 95 or +61 (2) 8974 0856 from overseas and you can hear it over the phone.

Should you need to take a peak at the shopping damage, you can view your full transaction history online at my.travelmoneyoz.com or via the Travel Money Oz app. Both of these options also allow you load additional funds and transfer money to other currencies.

If you’re using your Currency Pass for pre-authorisation for a bond payment with a merchant (i.e for a hotel, car hire or cruise), the pre-authorisation amount may not be released back onto your card for up to 30 days. If you pre-authorisation amount hasn't cleared within this period, give us a call on 13 61 95 or +61 (2) 8974 0856 from overseas.

Any pending transactions will update as the merchant settles them. Once this happens it will be reflected on your transaction history. Should you need to dispute a transaction please give us a call on 13 61 95, or +61 (2) 8974 0856 from overseas.

  • Can I use my card at an ATM?
  • Why are there extra ATM fees on my statement?

Make sure you're using an ATM that accepts Mastercard Always press "credit" If you've entered your PIN incorrectly more than 3 times, your card will be blocked as a security measure. If this happens please give us a call on 13 61 95 or +61 (2) 8974 0856 from overseas.

Every time you use an ATM, it's likely you'll be charged a standard ATM fee, with this, there may be additional charges from that ATM provider where you withdrew money. We've outlined this in our PDS so you're aware. The difference in fees may also be due to the transaction being made in your local currency, versus the currency of the country you're travelling in. We always recommend making purchases in the local currency where possible, and being aware of the ATM fees before you withdrawal cash as the more you use an ATM, the more fees you're likely to incur.

LOST OR STOLEN CARD

  • I have lost my card, or it has been stolen, what do I do?
  • How do I get a replacement card?

To order a replacement card, give us a call on 13 61 95 and we can sort you out with your 2.0 card! If you're having issues activitating your card, also give us a bell on the same number.

CANCELLED OR SUSPENDED CARD

  • My card has been cancelled or suspended, what should I do?

Please give us a call on 13 61 95, or +61 (2) 8974 0856 from overseas.

  • How do I cash out my remaining funds?

If you've returned home with leftover currency (well done, you!) you have a few options:

Your card is valid for 5 years, so you can hold onto it and use it again next trip. You can transfer any leftover funds to AUD and simply use the card for day to day transactions. You can have the balance transfered back into your Australian bank account. There's 2 x ways you can do this... 1. Online

Login to my.travelmoneyoz.com click on cash out to bank account. We'll need to confirm how much you want to cash out, your ID and your Australian bank details. You will also need to confirm your Mothers Maiden Name and DOB (this must be of the cardholder). This will take up to 5 x business days and you will be charged a $10 fee which will come out of your balance.

Give us a call on 13 61 95, or +61 (2) 8974 0856 from overseas. This will take up to 10 x business days and you will be charged a $10 fee which will come out of your balance.

The simplicity of Apple. In a credit card.

With Apple Card, we completely reinvented the credit card. Your information lives on your iPhone, beautifully laid out and easy to understand. We eliminated fees 1 and built tools to help you pay less interest, and you can apply in minutes to see if you are approved with no impact to your credit score. 2 Advanced technologies like Face ID, Touch ID, and Apple Pay give you an enhanced level of privacy and security. And with every purchase you get Daily Cash back that you can spend  3 or save. 4 Apple Card. It’s everything a credit card should be.

Created by Apple. Powered by iPhone.

Built for iphone.

Apple Card lives on your iPhone, in the Wallet app. You can sign up in as little as a minute and start using it right away with Apple Pay. 5 Your transactions, payments, and account details are all in one place, where only you can see them. 6 You even make your payments right in the Wallet app — just select your amount, tap, and it’s done.

We want to make it easier to pay down your balance, not harder. So Apple Card doesn’t have any fees. No annual, over-the-limit, foreign-transaction, or late fees. 7 No fees. Really. Because your credit card should work for you, not against you.

The first credit card that actually encourages you to pay less interest.

Pay less interest.

Most credit cards emphasize your minimum amount due. But when you pay only your minimum each month, it costs you a lot in interest over time. Apple Card is different. When you’re ready to make a payment, Apple Card estimates the interest you’ll wind up paying, based on any payment amount you choose. 8 And it does that in real time, so you can make an informed decision about how much of your balance to pay down.

Unlimited Daily Cash back.

Real cash you can use right away.

Unlimited Daily Cash

When you buy something using Apple Card, you get a percentage of your purchase back in Daily Cash — not a month from now, but every day. It’s real cash, so unlike rewards, it never expires or loses its value. You can choose to have it automatically deposited onto your Apple Cash card in the Wallet app, and it’s ready to send or spend however you’d like. 9 Or you can open a Savings account with Apple Card and route your Daily Cash directly into the account, where it can earn interest. And there’s no limit to how much Daily Cash you can get. Use it to buy things in stores, on websites, and in apps. Make a payment on your Apple Card. Pay back a friend. Or save it up and watch it grow over time.

Get 3% Daily Cash back at Apple. And at select merchants when you use Apple Pay.

3% daily cash.

Apple Card gives you unlimited 3% Daily Cash back on everything you buy at Apple — whether it’s a new Mac, an iPhone case, games from the App Store, or even a service like Apple Music or Apple TV+. You also get 3% Daily Cash back on purchases you make at select merchants when you use Apple Card with Apple Pay. ◊◊

Trusted partners for a different kind of credit card.

Partnerships.

To create Apple Card, we needed an issuing bank and a global payment network. Apple Card is the first consumer credit card Goldman Sachs has issued, and they were open to doing things in a new way. And the strength of the Mastercard network means Apple Card is accepted all over the world.

iOS 17.4: View Your Apple Cash's Virtual Card Numbers in 4 Easy Steps

With these numbers, you can use your Apple Cash online where Apple Pay isn't accepted.

  • Apple software beta tester, "Helps make our computers and phones work!" - Zach's grandparents

dscf1205-1

When Apple released iOS 17.4 on March 5, the update introduced a few bug fixes and a host of new features to your  iPhone , including more Stolen Device Protection settings and transcripts in Podcasts . And one of those new features is virtual card numbers for Apple Cash , allowing you to use Apple Pay in more places online.

CNET Tech Tips logo

According to Apple , Apple Cash is a digital card in your iPhone's Wallet app that can be used to buy items in physical and digital storefronts as well as in apps that accept Apple Pay. But now with iOS 17.4, you can generate virtual card numbers to use at digital storefronts that don't accept Apple Pay. However, it's important to note that Apple Cash doesn't support some merchant categories, such as cashlike transactions.

Here's how to view and use your Apple Cash virtual card numbers .

Read more: You Should Download iOS 17.4.1 Now

How to set up and view your virtual card number

If you haven't set up your Apple Cash card , here's how to do that. If you've already set up an Apple Cash card, you can skip past these instructions.

1. Open your Wallet app. 2. Tap your Apple Cash card near the bottom of your screen. 3. Tap Set Up Now under Set Up Apple Cash . 4. Follow the on-screen prompts and your Apple Cash card will be available in no time.

Once you've set up your Apple Cash card, you'll have a card number, expiration date and security code for your card, like you'd have on a physical credit or debit card. Here's how to view your virtual card numbers.

1. Open Wallet .  2. Tap your Apple Cash card. 3. Tap the three dots ( ... ) in the top right corner of your screen. 4. Tap Card Number .

Now that you've got a new virtual card number for your Apple Cash, your iPhone's Safari app can autofill your card information if you make a purchase on your phone. You can also manually enter your card's information on other devices or in other browsers to make purchases, too.

And if you think your current card number has been compromised, you can easily request a new virtual card number. Follow the steps above, tap Request New Card Number , then tap Request again and you'll immediately be given new virtual card numbers -- no waiting for your bank to send you a new card.

For more on iOS 17, here are all the features your iPhone could get with iOS 17.5 and what was included with iOS 17.4 . You can also check out our iOS 17 cheat sheet .

Apple Card and These Six Other iOS Features Available in the U.S. Only

While most iOS features are available internationally, some remain exclusive to the U.S., such as the Apple Card, Apple Card Savings, Apple Cash, Apple Pay Later, Wallet IDs, Roadside Assistance via Satellite, and Clean Energy Charging.

US Only iOS Features

Apple Card's financial partner in the U.S. is currently Goldman Sachs, but it was reported that the partnership will be ending as early as this year .

While there have been clues that the Apple Card might expand to additional countries in the future, such as an Apple Card trademark filing in Canada , Apple has not confirmed any immediate plans to launch the card internationally.

Apple Card Savings

apple card savings account feature

Given the Apple Card is available in the U.S. only, so too is the savings account.

Apple Cash banner

Apple Cash remains available in the U.S. only, and despite clues like a trademark filing in Canada , it is unclear if the feature will expand to other countries.

Apple Pay Later

Like the other financial features on this list, it is unclear if or when Apple Pay Later will expand to other countries.

apple wallet drivers license feature

Apple said it was working to offer the ID feature across the U.S. in the future, but the company has yet to announce any specific plans or a timeframe, and it has not indicated if the feature will ever launch in other countries.

Roadside Assistance via Satellite

Apple said the feature is available "beginning" in the U.S., so it will likely expand to some additional countries in the future.

Clean Energy Charging

Clean Energy Charging is available in the U.S. only, and Apple has not indicated if or when it will be expanded to additional countries.

The Apple Card: Should You Get One?

The Apple Card delivers up to 3% cash back and other benefits to the Apple faithful.

We may get compensation if you visit partner links on our site. We may not cover every available offer. Our relationship with advertisers may impact how an offer is presented on our website. However, our  selection of products  is made independently of our relationship with advertisers.

The Apple Card is a sweet deal for the iPhone crowd, with some caveats. To get the greatest value from this credit card, you'll need to pair it with the wallet app called Apple Pay and an Apple device to make purchases, such as an Apple Watch , iPhone or iPad .

In exchange for your fealty to Apple, you get 3% cash back on purchases of Apple and select other products, 2% back on most purchases, and 1% back if you use your card alone, without using Apple Pay.

Best of all? The cash back hits your Apple Cash account every day , unlike many cards that make you wait for your rewards until after you have paid your monthly bill. And by linking your Apple Cash wallet with a high-yield Apple Savings account, you can start saving your cash back seamlessly at a competitive interest rate.

Apple Card overview

Image

This card is designed for fans of Apple products. When linked with Apple Pay, the card gets 3% cash back from Apple Store purchases, Uber and other merchants, 2% back at all other merchants that take Apple Pay and 1% back when using the card alone. Cash rewards are deposited daily in an Apple Cash or Apple Savings Account.

Apple Savings account rate : Recently 4.4% APY .

Annual fee : None.

Sign-up bonus : None.

Interest rates : Variable APR of 19.24% to 29.49%.

Pros and Cons

  • Simplicity . With no points to track or travel miles to redeem, this card can save you time and brain cells.
  • Encourages saving . Apple does a good job of helping you save money. When you elect to have cash back deposited in an Apple Savings account, your brain may be less likely to think of the cash as free money to spend. The Savings account recently had an interest rate of 4.4% APY. While there are better high-yield savings accounts available, paying over 5%, the rate is still well above the national average.
  • No waiting for cash back . It's deposited every day into your Apple Cash or Apple Savings account.
  • Rewards stacking . By combining your Apple Card with Apple Pay and the loyalty programs of participating merchants, you can score some great rewards. For example, get 3% cash back when you buy gas, car washes or convenience items at Exxon Mobil stations and earn Exxon Mobil Rewards+ points , which you can redeem against a future purchase.
  • No fees . No annual fee, late fee or foreign transaction fee.
  • Monthly installments . With Apple Plan , you can pay over time at a low interest rate, or at 0% for Apple products.
  • Happy customers .  The Apple Card won Best Co-Branded Credit Card for Customer Satisfaction with No Annual Fee in the J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Credit Card Satisfaction Study . And the Apple Cash payment app won first in its category in the 2023 Kiplinger Readers' Choice Awards .
  • Security. The card and payment app are designed for enhanced security .
  • Easy on the credit score . You can apply for the card and see your credit limit and interest rate without a hard pull on your credit. If you enroll, however, your credit score will be impacted, as is customary when applying for a card .
  • No welcome or sign-up bonus. Some of the best credit card bonuses exceed $1,000 , and other 2% flat rate cash back cards like Apple Card offer $200 bonuses .
  • No purchase protection . Unlike other credit cards, like those in the Visa Signature line, this card does not come with purchase protection (typically 90 to 120 days of insurance against theft or damage, depending on the card). That's a real consideration if you plan to buy a laptop or iPhone with your card for the 3% back rate. iPhones, for example, come with a 90-day warranty. After 90 days, you can buy   Apple Care insurance for up to $149 for two years of coverage. Credit cards like the Chase Freedom Flex, on the other hand, offer smartphone coverage up to $600 for free.
  • Encourages spending. Yes, we just said that the card can help trick your brain into saving money, but it can also entice you to spend more. That's because people spend more money — almost 10% more on average — when using mobile payments than when paying a physical credit card. This type of "frictionless" payment is just so easy, you don't have as much time to pause and think about your spending.
  • Not accepted everywhere . Although most merchants accept Apple Pay, currently, Walmart, Kroger, H-E-B and Sam's Club do not .
  • Uncertain future banking partner . The Apple Card partners with Goldman Sachs , but that relationship will be unwound over the next year or so. It's unclear which financial institution will step in to sponsor the card, or if any rewards rates will change.

Current 3% back partners

Here are the recent merchants that pay 3% back when you pay with your Apple Card with Apple Pay. Note that these partners may change.

A list of the 3% back partners in 2024, including Exxon Mobil, Uber, Uber Eats, ACE Hardware, and more.

Rewards cards dos and don'ts

As with any  rewards credit card , be sure to weigh these benefits against fees — although there are happily none in this case — and make sure you understand how to use the card effectively.

In addition, while reward credit cards are great if you use them wisely,  always pay them off in full and on time each month  to avoid interest, which can dwarf any rewards you earn. Don't change your spending habits to earn extra points. That's a slippery slope that can lead to overspending.

If this is your first foray into credit cards, or you just want a refresher, make sure you know  how to choose a credit card . And ensure you are familiar with what counts as a  good credit score .

  • Mastercard launches mobile virtual card app to simplify travel and business expenses

travel money card apple pay

HSBC and Westpac to unlock the convenience, security and efficiency of tap to pay transactions

Mastercard announced a new mobile virtual card app that enables virtual commercial cards to be seamlessly added to digital wallets. The innovative app is designed to offer financial institutions more choice in how they deliver the secure and sustainable contactless payment solutions that companies increasingly expect.

For over a decade, Mastercard has pioneered virtual card solutions to simplify tedious expense report and reconciliation processes for employees, contractors, recruits, and consultants who often use personal cards or cash for reimbursable business expenses. As companies navigate changing payment preferences particularly from the entry-level workforce – with over two-thirds of millennials having adopted digital wallets 1 – mobile technology is unlocking the next frontier of convenient contactless payments.

“Businesses worldwide are seeking fast and secure payment experiences, where payments can be made with just a click or tap, and finance teams can experience automatic reconciliation,” said Chad Wallace, global head of Commercial Solutions, Mastercard. “With today’s launch, we’re providing innovative tech that digitizes business and travel expenses, while also empowering businesses with more control of and visibility into their finances.”

The app leverages Mastercard’s innovative virtual card and tokenization platforms, enhanced data, and robust spend controls all within one easy-to-use interface. Accessing Mastercard mobile virtual cards is made seamless through the app so users can quickly experience the benefits of tap to pay. Mastercard mobile virtual cards can be used by organizations spanning a range of sizes and industries – including healthcare, insurance, fleet, higher education, and corporate travel.

Key capabilities and benefits of Mastercard’s mobile virtual card app include:

  • Increased security : The app offers the ability to set up a biometric authentication and an added security measure using a PIN to view card details. Each virtual card is also tokenized, enabling the cardholder’s sensitive data to be replaced by a unique card number so sensitive account details are not exposed.
  • Robust spend controls: Organizations can confidently stay compliant with expense policies using Mastercard’s transaction-level controls, which limit how, where, and when a mobile virtual card can be used.
  • Flexible integrations: Financial institutions can quickly get to market through Mastercard’s user interface or flexible API-based integrations, and offer unique features such as customized card art.
  • Holistic and seamless payment experience: The app provides a single interface to check the status of card balances and view pending and completed transactions, and is bank-agnostic, enabling users to access and manage virtual commercial cards issued by multiple participating financial institutions.
  • Real-time and enhanced data: For each mobile virtual card created, custom data elements are automatically captured and matched to the transaction, providing organizations with increased insights into spending and automatic reconciliation to optimize back-office processes.

HSBC Australia and Westpac will be the first financial institutions to offer organizations and corporate customers mobile wallet functionality through the Mastercard app.

“We’re pleased to partner with Mastercard to bring mobile wallet virtual cards to our Australian corporate clients, providing them with a smarter, safer, and faster way to pay,” said John Scott, Head of Global Payments, HSBC Australia. “Mobile wallet usage is growing, with the Asia-Pacific region accounting for over half of the digital payment transactions globally 2 . As contactless payments continue to surge, it’s important that corporate clients have access to best-in-class payment solutions to keep their business secure and take advantage of the increased efficiency offered by the latest technologies. HSBC has a history of delivering innovative digital solutions to our corporate clients, and we’re proud to add to that legacy with the launch of mobile wallet virtual cards in Australia. We plan to launch in other markets later this year.”

“Westpac is pleased to be one of the first domestic banks in Australia to offer the new Mastercard mobile virtual card app to our corporate and commercial customers in addition to our existing virtual card capabilities. The global payments market is at an inflection point and the mobile wallet solution, combining digital innovation, real time processing and security through robust controls is another way we’re helping our customers,” said Jeff Byrne, Managing Director of Global Transaction Services at Westpac Institutional Bank.

The app will be available in other key markets for users with a commercial virtual card issued through an organization by a participating financial institution. Once registered for the app with an invitation code, users will find their commercial virtual cards automatically linked and ready to be added to select digital wallets for use across Mastercard’s trusted global network.
