Had a wonderful excursion to Sealounge Catamaran! The staff was terrific; very accommodating and fun! The beach was beautiful, they prepared a fabulous lunch, and the cocktails on the beach were perfect. I would do this again in a heartbeat!

Guide to Visiting Playa Herradura, Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Located just a few miles north of  Jaco  in Puntarenas Province, Playa Herradura is a small fishing village turned tourist destination.

The  dark sand beach  lining the  horseshoe-shaped bay  is a beautiful spot to visit on the central Pacific coast. With mass construction on the northern end of the beach, you’ll find large-scale resorts and hotels, boutique shopping options, and beachfront restaurants.

Plus, the  marina in Herradura Bay  is also well-known for water sports, including sport fishing, jet skiing, surfing, and parasailing.

How to Get to Playa Herradura

Located right next to Jaco on the central Pacific coast, Herradura Beach is easy to reach by car or bus from various places in Costa Rica.

Playa Herradura is located  just 4 kilometres north of Jacó Beach  in the province of Puntarenas. This makes it less than  2 hours drive from the capital, San Jose,  from where you can rent a car when landing at the international airport.

If you’re travelling from  Tamarindo , the drive takes around 4.5 hours. It’s an easy drive, as the beach is located just off the main coastal road (route 34).

By Bus/Shuttle

There is no direct public bus to Playa Herradura, but you can take any bus heading to Jaco. There are local buses from downtown San Jose to Jaco, leaving roughly every two hours and costing between $5-10 for the two-hour trip. 

From Jaco, you can take a taxi for the short 4km drive to the beach.

Another option is to take one of the  shared shuttles to Playa Herradura,  which can stop at your chosen hotel. The private shuttle from San Jose costs  $60 USD per adult  with companies like Interbus, Easy Ride, and Ride CR.

Parking at Playa Herradura 

There is  some parking on the road  that runs along the beach. This is not a secure parking lot with guards, so make sure not to leave any valuables visible and always lock your doors. On weekends and holidays, parking may be extremely tight as locals and tourists come to enjoy the beach.

Facilities at Playa Herradura 

There has been plenty of construction in recent years along Playa Herradura, Costa Rica. 

On the northern end, you’ll find  Los Sueños Resort and Marina,  shops, and restaurants. The southern end of the bay is a bit more rustic, but you’ll find bathrooms and showers in the camping areas for an extra fee.

There are plenty of activities to do in and around Playa Herradura, whether in the water or on land.

Try Sport Fishing

Playa Herradura is  most famous for its fishing.  It’s home to Costa Rica’s largest fleet of game fishing captains and boats, with vessels from 30 to 180 feet. 

Los Sueños Marina is also home to two  exclusive sportfishing tournaments  each year, where you can cast a line for 40-pound dorado, 300-pound yellowfin tuna and big Pacific sailfish.

Relax on the Beach

Walk along the beautiful bay, and you’ll find plenty of room to sit on the beach and relax in the sun. It’s the perfect place to escape the busy resorts and find your own spot under some trees or to take a quick dip in the water. 

Play Golf at Los Suenos Resort

Located within the resort complex is  La Iguana  Championship Golf Course,  an 18-hole, par-72 golf course designed by Ted Robinson. Landscaped to include exotic plants attracting wildlife and birds, it’s one of the best places to play golf in Costa Rica.

The driving range is open from 7am – 4pm. There’s also an option to book a package that includes a stay at the Marriott Los Suenos Resort and a round of golf.

Go Shopping

Playa Herradura has turned into a shopper’s paradise with shopping malls and stores built in and around the resort area. Back from the beach on the main coastal road is  Plaza Herradura, a shopping precinct  with fast food, fashion stores, and a supermarket. You can also find some great souvenirs there at  Danica Gallery,  including masks, jewellery, and traditional Indigenous crafts.

Explore on Day Trips

Playa Herradura is a great base from which to explore more of Puntarenas. It’s easy to reach more beaches nearby, including the popular  Playa Hermosa , the small beach of  Playa Mantas,  and the tucked-away  Playa Bejuco .  You can even go further afield to Carara National Park and  Manuel Antonio National Park  for hiking and wildlife spotting.

Spend the Day at Vista Los Sueños Adventure Park

Just a short 5 km drive from Playa Herradura is this expansive  Los Suenos Adventure Park. 

They host a range of activities to keep people of all ages busy for a day of fun. Spend a  full day tour  doing zip-lining, horseback riding, and ATV riding with lunch, or a  mountain biking tour  through the jungle, past farms and streams, to reach a breathtaking waterfall.

Can you swim at playa herradura.

Yes, the beach has fairly  calm waves  and is  perfect for swimming and stand-up paddle boarding . Occasionally, the small waves are enough for beginner surfers to get out in the water, but otherwise, swimming is fairly safe.

Can you Fish at Playa Herradura?

Playa Herradura has earned itself a reputation as  one of the best fishing destinations in Costa Rica.  Sportfishing is the main activity at the beach, with the world-class marina home to many large, fully equipped fishing boats and the host of sport fishing competitions every year. 

Avid fishermen travel to Herradura specifically for the abundant marlin, tuna, dorado and mahi mahi.

Can you Surf at Playa Herradura?

The calm waters in Playa Herradura make it  not the best spot for surfing . However, it can occasionally be good for beginners when the waves build up, but otherwise, stand-up paddleboarding is more ideal.

Is Playa Herradura Safe for Families? 

With its gentle waves and clear water, Playa Herradura is  perfect for families . In fact, the area has been popular amongst local families for generations, and now, with more facilities, it’s one of the best day trips in Puntarenas.

El Pelicano Restaurant

Located on the white sand beach south of the marina and resort area, this seafood restaurant is the ultimate  tucked-away gem for sunset drinks and dinner.  Some of the highlights include lobster tacos, tuna burgers, and ceviche, with all the seafood coming in fresh from the marina. It’s a casual place, but the food and service bring it all up a notch.

Restaurante Lanterna

Located on the marina in Herradura Beach, this  Italian restaurant  occupies the perfect spot for a romantic dinner. From delicious steak to grilled octopus, it’s more of an indulgent affair with high-end prices to match. 

Casita Del Sabor

On the main coastal road outside of Playa Herradura, this restaurant is a  rustic, local affair.  Serving generous meals all day long, you can order everything from pancakes at breakfast to ceviche and grilled whole fish for lunch.

It is a good spot to stay if you want to be close to all the action of the Jaco area, but want a more peaceful and luxurious experience.

You will have trouble finding budget-friendly options here.

Map Of Herradura

The village is located just north of the bustling town of Jaco.

It is located about 1.5 hours from San Jose by car. 

Flights to Costa Rica

For flight booking we suggest Skyscanner . They are our go-to flight booking site for great rates.

It is best to fly into San Jose (Juan Santamaria International Airport) to easily get here.

Driving to Herradura

We suggest renting a car to drive yourself.

The highway from San Jose to Herradura is a well-maintained. You should have no issues if you are a somewhat experienced driver.

Keep in mind that the highway is a toll road. You need to pay with cash, but they do accept dollars if you don’t have colones.

We usually pay with a $10 bill and the change (in colones) is enough to pay for the rest of the tolls. 

About an hour into your drive you will cross over a river called Rio Tarcoles which is usually lined with people. Pull your car over and walk back onto the bridge to check it out. You’ll see huge crocodiles below waiting for a tasty meal. 🙂

You do not need to rent a 4×4 for this route. The roads are all paved.

Private Shuttle to Herradura

If you have a small group, the most comfortable option is hiring a private shuttle.

We are big fans of Adobe Transfers and they are more than happy to stop along the drive so you can check out all the crocodiles at Rio Tarcoles or other viewpoints.

Public Bus to Herradura Costa Rica

If you are only going to a hotel in Herradura and not planning on traveling to other places, the bus from San Jose is your cheapest option.

The public bus will only cost you a few dollars and runs several times a day. It’s not the most comfortable and if it’s full you could be left standing for the whole ride, but hey, it’s cheap!

You can check out the full bus schedule here . As your destination put in “Herradura.” Keep in mind that the bus departs from downtown San Jose, not from the airport.

Transportation In Herradura

Herradura is so small that you really do not need a car. It is very easy to just walk around.

However, you most likely want to take some fun day trips. For that, you will either need a car or book tours with transportation included.

If you don’t feel comfortable driving from San Jose to Herradura, but would like a car while you explore the area, you can rent a car from Adobe and input Jaco as your pick-up location.

They have an office directly in the downtown area of Jaco. In the comments section of the rental car reservation, you can specify that you need the car delivered to you at your hotel.

Adobe will deliver it to you free of charge if you are within 12 miles of their location (which all Herradura hotels should be less than 12 miles away).

Herradura Costa Rica Weather

From December until mid-April there is hardly any rain in Herradura. The weather tends to be very hot and humid.

Just keep in mind that this is also prime tourism time and the nearby town of Jaco tends to be one of the most crowded beach towns in the country. This means that by default, Herradura gets filled up as well.

From mid-April until the end of July you can expect sunny and hot days with a daily afternoon thunderstorm. The rain usually rolls in around 2 pm and typically does not last for more than a few hours. Even after the rain ends for the day it tends to stay warm.

From August until December the weather is a complete surprise. Sometimes there will be nice sunny days and other times there can be nonstop rain.

Keep in mind that this is also the least popular time to travel so there are fewer tourists and everything is a bit cheaper.

Things to Do in Herradura Costa Rica

Enjoy playa herradura.

The Herradura beach is a nice place to spend a beach day with calm waters that you can swim in.

If you are staying at Los Sueños Resort you will have access to their championship golf course with sweeping Central Pacific Coast views. 

Take a Sport Fishing Trip

It is possible to experience world class deep-sea or in-shore fishing from Herradura.

Your experienced guide will help you to try and catch marlins, mahi-mahi, sailfish, and more!

If in shore or deep-sea fishing is your thing, Jaco is a great place to take a trip from.

We suggest booking your trip with Captain Jorge on the Barrileta.

Playa Hermosa is the perfect spot for more experienced surfers. If you are new to surfing you are better off trying out the waters near Jaco.

There are plenty of surf shops that offer board rentals as well as lessons.

Herradura Restaurants

Amphitheater Restaurant – This is the kind of place that you need to see to believe. Here you can enjoy a delicious luxury meal with a view of the amphitheater and ocean beyond. We highly suggest getting an early dinner (around 5:15 pm) to fully embrace the sunset views. 

LANTERNA Italian Steakhouse – Located at Los Suenos resort, this restaurant offers great views of the busy Herradura harbor. I always opt for one of their traditional Italian dishes and Thomas is all about the fresh seafood.

El Pelicano – This place has a little of everything and all of it is delicious. We like this spot because you can get a table directly on the beach and it has a pleasant relaxed atmosphere. 

La Puesta del Sol – Good place right on the beach that serves things such as pasta, burgers, and traditional Costa Rican fare.

Los Suenos Resort – This is a Marriot resort located directly on the beach. This is one of the few places in Costa Rica that has a golf course , so golf lovers, this is your place to be.

The property has a kids club, multiple restaurants, several interconnecting pools, and a fitness center.

Hotel Villa Caletas – The style of this place is not at all what you would expect to find in Costa Rica, and we kind of love it. Here you can expect ornate marble everywhere.

Vacation Rentals in Herradura

We always love renting a home or villa for our vacation in Costa Rica. This gives you more privacy and allows you the flexibility to cook your own meals.

Note: We try to only ever suggest places with good cancellation policies, but always double-check before booking.

There is a huge variety of villas at all price points located within the Los Suenos Resort property. For a ton of options, check out VRBO and the Marriott Homes & Villas website .  

I suggest booking through Marriott directly to make sure the home includes access to all the Los Suenos amenities. 

Here are a few places we really like…

Villa La Perla  – Four bedroom, five bathroom, sleeps eight. There is a private pool, grill, and hot tub on the private property with access to resort amenities. 

Casa Patron –  Six bedroom, six bathrooms, sleeps 18 guests. There is swimming pools, a large game room with a Championship pool table, and a barbecue area. 

Casa Oasis – Five bedrooms, six bath home that can sleep up to 10 guests. The outdoor area has a sun deck, jacuzzi, and swimming pool. 

Herradura Travel Tips

Herradura is the place to go for a resort getaway close to action. It’s a really nice spot.

If you are looking for a lot of action, Jaco is the place to stay. 

If you want a relaxed surfer vibe, head south of Jaco to Playa Hermosa .  

Packing for Herradura Costa Rica

If you are staying in Herradura you most likely are staying at Los Suenos resort. That means you kind of need a mix of all types of clothing (dependinf on your plans). 

We usually pack swimwear for the beach, catamaran tours, and hanging by the pool; semi nice clothes such as sundresses and lightweight pants with a nice shirt for dinners, and breathable shorts, tshirts, and sneakers for day trips zip ling or hiking.

Overall, don’t forget to take sun protection very seriously here.

Playa Herradura

A coastal town just 4km north of Jaco , Playa Herradura is one of Costa Rica’s most vibrant destinations. HRG is home to the beautiful Playa Herradura, or in English, Horseshoe Beach (but nobody calls it that!). Playa Herradura gets its name from the way the beach is perfectly encompassed in a bay, shaped just like a horseshoe.

So, what is there to discover in this desirable beach town? A scenic beach? A luxury resort? World class Sportfishing? Today we will review why Playa Herradura is Costa Rica at its very best.

A Geographical Gem

Playa Herradura is one of the most sought after destinations in the region of Puntarenas, thanks to its idyllic tropical beach with calm blue waters, and its proximity to the international airport in San Jose.

On the south side of the bay you’ll see Isla Herradura, an uninhabited island sitting at the edge of the bay, helping frame those perfect pacific coast sunsets. On the north side of the bay is where you’ll find Los Sueños Resort and Marina , lined with immaculate fishing boats and yachts. And right in the middle is Herradura Beach.

A Perfect Costa Rican Beach

The bay protects the beach from major swells, making this beach perfect for swimming and popular amongst families. The beach is lined with tiki bar style restaurants and on the weekends you’ll find plenty of Tico families enjoying the shade under the almond trees.

You can also find stand up paddleboard and kayak rentals here. Playa Herradura is a lovely little beach, dear to many Costa Ricans. But what else does Herradura have? Is it just a beach?

The Crown Jewel of Herradura: Los Sueños

If you drive away from the beach you’ll pass the enchanting entrance to Los Sueños. Beautiful landscaping surrounds the guard gates to enter the resort. You’ll drive down a palm tree lined road, passing a scenic creek, a few holes of the luscious La Iguana championship golf course , and before you reach Marina Village you’ll have an enchanting ocean view of Herradura Bay. You’ll also go by a number of condominiums and villas, many of which are managed by HRG Properties & Rentals.

Marina Village is a great place to reconvene: there is a cafe with delicious coffee drinks and a full menu, along with several restaurant options. All of these restaurants overlook the boats which sit in the world famous Los Sueños Marina. Los Sueños also has its own small beach on the north side of the bay. It’s the perfect place to watch the sunset and dig your toes into the soft sand.

Most of our guests choose to get around in a golf cart once they’re here, and hire our drivers to take them on their excursions outside of the resort. Los Sueños Resort is the crème de la crème of lodging and vacation experience in the region, and we’re so lucky to have it in Playa Herradura!

Discover the Central Pacific Coast

Most people don’t visit Herradura without at least checking out the neighboring town of Jacó (ha•KO). Jacó is a hotspot for travelers of all ages. It has great surfing, plenty of restaurants, and a busy nightlife.

At HRG, we love to bring our clients surfing at Jacó beach, and we’re always happy to recommend our favorite restaurants.

Vacation Vistas

Just a few minutes north of Herradura is a tourist destination known as Punta Leona. It’s popular amongst Costa Ricans who travel from San Jose to enjoy Playa Blanca, a white sand beach with calm waters. Many of our guests like to check out Playa Blanca and then enjoy the sunset at Villa Caletas, where you’ll find the best ocean views in all of Costa Rica from their stunning amphitheater.

Further south past Jacó you’ll find Playa Hermosa, a black sand beach with world fame in the surfing community. Beware, these waves are for advanced surfers only. But tourists and locals alike love to grab lunch at Vida Hermosa on the beach and watch the pros do their thing!

Wildlife at Manuel Antonio

Travel even further south and you’ll find Manuel Antonio National Park , which makes a great day trip from Herradura. Rainforest, white sand beach, monkeys, and sloths are just part of what make Manuel Antonio the best park in Costa Rica, and we have it only one hour from Herradura.

The Local Side of Herradura

Leaving Los Sueños and heading towards the main road, you’ll pass a residential area, with a few small markets and local eateries. As you approach the main road, you’ll see the big Herradura Plaza on the right.

Here you can find the best grocery store for 50 miles, Automercado. Travelers love this store because they can find American comforts, international specialties, and Costa Rican classics.

Driving across the main road into the other side of town, you’ll find our adventure park where many great tours begin. As you go through this local part of Herradura, you’ll see how many local Costa Ricans live. Keep your eyes peeled, you might see a good soccer game going on! Herradura has a great community, with many people employed by the tourism and fishing industries.

Adventure Awaits

Herradura is not only beautiful for its beach, but for the mountains that crawl up to the shore. This makes it a great spot for adventure tourism. Travelers from all over the Puntarenas province come here to enjoy ziplining, ATV and side-by-side tours, as well as horseback riding at Vista Los Sueños adventure park.

In addition to ATV, waterfalls, and horseback riding, Herradura’s proximity to other activities makes it a prime destination on the central pacific coast. On the way to your lodging from the airport, you will pass the world famous Tarcoles River, home to many American Crocodiles who bathe in the sun while tourists look out over the bridge.

Within 15 minutes of Los Sueños you can also find Carara National Park, a Mecca for birders or travelers who wish to see scarlet macaws, toucans, and many other colorful birds of paradise.

Herradura: Gateway to the Vast Pacific

Tourists from all over come to Herradura Bay to embark on their boat trips. The calm waters of this protected bay make it the perfect launching boat for boats big and small. People come to fish the coastline in smaller boats, or they join the big leagues of the Los Sueños Marina fleet for a day of deep sea fishing .

For non-anglers, we always suggest a day cruising to the white sand beach on Isla Tortuga, where you can snorkel, kayak, and explore the turquoise waters of the gulf of Nicoya.
