When it was constructed in the early 1970s, it was the tallest building in the southern hemisphere!

What to do there: The Top of Africa is a great place to get stunning views of Johannesburg and the surrounding area. As well as noticing the lack of nearby water source, you’ll probably note the world’s largest urban forest here too. Once you’ve finished at the observation deck, head down into the Carlton Centre. It may not be the luxury hotel that it once was, but it still has a shopping centre on-site where you could pick up some souvenirs!

Why it’s awesome: This family business was set up above a garage in 1974 but has had to move since then due to stock size. Incredibly, at Collectors Treasury, there are over 1 million used books! What to do there: You don’t have to be interested in reading or books to visit Collectors Treasury. It does help though! This unusual and intriguing store also collects maps, vinyl records, photographs, and a whole host of other memorabilia from days gone by. Johannesburg is found in the northeast of South Africa and is home to the country’s main international airport. With a sprawling urban area that stretches for miles, it’s the most populated city in South Africa. Even so, it’s not one of the country’s three capital cities. Unusually for such a large city, once the extensive suburbs and townships end, there is nothing except open plains and beautiful countryside. Despite this, Johannesburg is often avoided by tourists visiting South Africa because of its reputation for crime.

But this is largely overstated, and rarely impacts visitors to the city. The reality is that Johannesburg is the cultural heart of modern South Africa. All in all, Jo’burg is the perfect base from which to explore the many national parks and game reserves found in the area. It’s also the ideal place to see the best of South Africa’s contemporary culture. Down the road is the historic city of Pretoria, where you can learn more about the divided history of this country. Not too much further away, Sun City offers amusement and water parks for those looking for a different kind of escape from Johannesburg. In other words, there are many great day trips to be done from Johannesburg, and these are the very best.

Below you’ll find my top picks for attractions easily reached from Johannesburg. Having traveled extensively across South Africa more than once, I know first-hand what’s worth your hard earned time, and what isn’t.

1. Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park is perhaps South Africa’s most famous national park.

It’s also one of South Africa’s largest, covering an enormous area of almost 8000 square miles. Johannesburg acts as an ideal gateway for international travelers to South Africa looking to visit the park.

From Johannesburg, a multitude of companies offer day tours to the fringes of Kruger. Here you can get a taste for the wild nature of South Africa’s savannas and see the icons of African wildlife, including the Big Five game animals.

It can be tricky to see all five species (lions, elephants, rhinos, Cape buffaloes, and leopards) in a single day.

However, it’s not impossible with an experienced guide, and there are plenty of other animals to keep you open-mouthed, from giraffes to hyenas.

With such an expanse of wilderness to explore, you’re sure to find yourself wanting to return again and again. After all, no two days at Kruger National Park are ever the same.

Soweto is found on the outskirts of Johannesburg’s city centre. Although now considered part of the city itself, for a long time this area was very, very separate.

It makes for an incredibly interesting day trip, as Soweto was the largest township in South Africa during the dark days of Apartheid.

The name of the area means simply South Western Townships, and a tour here will give you a glimpse of the Johannesburg beyond its glittering central office blocks.

You can learn about the turbulent history of the township but also experience the vibrant lifestyles that are lived here. The modern symbol of Soweto, the muraled cooling towers of Orlando Power Station, are a sign of this.

A must for any visit to Soweto is the Apartheid Museum. It’s galleries are dedicated to detailing the horrors of South Africa’s policies of racial division. But there’s a lot more to see besides.

The Orlando area was home to Nelson Mandela before his imprisonment on Robben Island. Now a museum and national monument, the tiny red brick building where he lived still holds the bullet holes and burn marks caused by petrol bombs, alongside much of its original contents.

Tours also include time learning about the Soweto Uprising, an event that led to the deaths of several school children protesting against the use of Afrikaans in Soweto schools.

Together attractions make Soweto an intriguing place to visit, and one of the best day trips to make from Johannesburg.

3. Sun City

After a heavy dose of history and politics in Soweto, you may be looking for something a little more light-hearted and relaxing when it comes to taking your next day trip from Johannesburg.

Sun City is essentially one big holiday resort. South Africa’s most famous getaway, it’s an excellent place to visit if you are looking for relaxation, fun, and amusement parks.

Think Las Vegas, and you’ve got Sun City pretty much sussed. You can find everything from spas and water parks, to bars and even a casino. In short, fun for all the family.

Kitsch it definitely is. Yet at the same time, Sun City has an allure like nowhere else in South Africa, and certainly nowhere within proximity to Johannesburg.

Sun City is a two-hour drive away from Johannesburg, meaning that while there are plenty of hotels tempting you to stay the night, it makes for a great day trip too.

What’s more, trips to Sun City are often combined with a tour of Pilanesberg National Park, my next pick.

4. Pilanesberg National Park

Pilanesberg National Park is located right next to Sun City, but it’s an entirely different world to explore.

Being so close to Johannesburg, Pilanesberg makes for an excellent place to visit to experience the wild nature of South Africa without needing to spend days in the bushveld.

The park takes its name from an enormous mountain, formed from a now extinct volcano. But most people visit for the chance to see the huge variety of wildlife that lives within its boundaries.

You can spot all of the Big Five animals, as well as almost every species which calls South Africa home.

The volcanic landscape is simply breathtaking, especially around the Mankwe Dam area of the park.

To get a real overview of all the park’s magnificent landscapes, ascending to the skies in a hot air balloon is a fabulous idea.

5. Pretoria

Pretoria is found just an hour to the north of Johannesburg’s city center and is one of South Africa’s three capital cities (alongside Cape Town and Bloemfontein).

As a result, it’s home to a host of administrative offices, many beautiful pieces of architecture in their own right.

There’s also a great deal of history, connected not only with the Afrikaaners who founded the city, but also the nomadic tribes who roamed the plains of the area before them.

To get a feel of what the city’s all about, a good place to start is the impressive Voortrekker Monument.

It’s a grand legacy built to commerorate the hardships faced by Afrikaaners forced to move north to escape British colonisation.

For a full lowdown of the history of this time, head to Pretoria Forts, built to protect against British advances.

Then visit the Union Buildings on Meintjieskop hill. The seat of the South African government, the buildings were designed by British architect Sir Herbert Baker, who was also partially responsible for New Delhi.

6. Magaliesberg

Magaliesberg is a formidable mountain range found to the north of Johannesburg and an area that makes for a wild escape from the confines of the city. The scenery is absolutely beautiful.

It’s rugged, mountainous and full of wildlife, and there are plenty of opportunities to explore the nature, to hike to waterfalls, and to climb its peaks.

Alternatively, grab a ticket for the Hartbeesport Aerial Cableway, which will take you to the top of the Magaliesberg Mountains without any effort.

Elsewhere in the area you can find many farms and wildlife reserves, giving visitors the opportunity to explore local life in this secluded part of South Africa just a short hop from the country’s biggest city.

7. Rustenburg

Rustenburg is a city located two hours away from Johannesburg, and it’s found in beautiful surroundings in the foothills of the Magaliesberg Mountains.

Meaning ‘place of rest’ in Afrikaans, it’s a phrase which still perfectly describes the town.

It’s really the gateway to exploring the entire region, but the town itself offers visitors a look at Afrikaaner history in the area.

There is a great museum explaining the town’s importance, and there are many battlefields nearby which were the scene of fighting during the Anglo-Boer War.

8. Hartbeespoort

Also found in the foothills of the Magaliesburg Mountains is the town of Hartbeespoort.

This lakeside community is a charming place to visit and is the site of the Hartbeespoort Dam.

It’s an excellent place to wind down and to enjoy boating trips or cruises across the scenic lake.

That said, Hartbeespoort has also become a center for adrenaline sports.

White water rafting on the Crocodile River (no crocs present) is becoming increasingly popular, while divers have the unusual opportunity of delving into what was once a chrome mine.

Meanwhile, big cat lovers should head to the Ann van Dyk Cheetah Center, a sanctuary committed to protecting these superb creatures.

9. Maropeng Visitor Centre

The Maropeng Visitor Centre, found within the Cradle of Humankind UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an incredible learning center and exhibition space located close to Magaliesburg.

The center showcases the rich discoveries that have been made in the area by archaeologists uncovering human fossils and remains and piecing together the early years of humanity.

It’s a great insight into the importance of southern Africa to the evolution of humankind as a whole. Its exhibits include stone tools thought to be a million years old, predating our own species by around 700,000 years.

10. Sterkfontein Caves

The Sterkfontein Caves are located close to the Maropeng Visitor Centre and can be visited on the same day trip from Johannesburg.

Ten to 15 minutes apart, it’s well worth ensuring any tour you go on includes a shuttle between the two attractions.

The caves are part of the broader Cradle of Humankind UNESCO World Heritage Site because it was within these caves that many of the most important discoveries have been made.

These include the unearthing of many, very early human species, such as Australopithicus bones dated to around 3 million years ago.

The most famous example is probably Little Foot, a near complete skeleton 3.5 million years old. Little Foot was only discovered in 1994, and had enough of the ankle remaining to show he or she walked upright.

11. Krugersdorp

Krugersdorp is predominantly a mining town, built to take advantage of the huge deposits of gold and minerals that were discovered in the Witwatersrand area close to Johannesburg.

The town itself may not have much to offer tourists, but the surrounding area is rich in beautiful scenery and many underground cave systems that can be explored.

A favourite place to visit is the aptly named Wonder Cave. One of South Africa’s largest caves, it drops 22 meters below ground.

Visitors are able to reach the bottom thanks to 87 steps, from where the range of stalagtites, stalagmites and cave pearls are best viewed.

A second top Krugersdorp attraction is the Bothongo Lion and Rhino Reserve, which has game drives in open-sided vehicles departing multiple times a day.

12. Cullinan

Cullinan is another mining town found close to Johannesburg, and this town is very much of interest to those wanting to learn more about the history of the region, and the mining opportunities that brought many settlers here.

Many of the buildings date back to the early 20th century, when the town was first established. Walking through the streets is almost like taking a step back in time.

The town contains several small museums worth popping into, while horse rides and zip-lining are available in the surrounding countryside.

13. Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve

The Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve is an unusual nature reserve, in that it’s located less than ten miles from Johannesburg city center.

Being so close to the city, it’s surprising to find so much wildlife and beautiful scenery right on the doorstep, and makes for an easy escape, as well as a great look at the nature of the region.

So although Klipriviersberg might not meet the stature of either Kruger or Pilanesberg national parks, it still makes for a superb day out from Johannesburg.

The reserve has healthy populations of many ungulates and antelopes, including zebra, wildebeest, and red haartbeest. But Klipriversberg is best known as a birding destination, with 230 bird species identified in the reserve.

14. Skeerport

Skeerport is a quaint little town that’s found close to the Hartebeesport Dam, not far from Johannesburg.

This small town is set in glorious surroundings and is known as one of the area’s best hot air ballooning spots.

Take to the skies as the sun rises and enjoy the incredible scenery from the air. If you can manage the early morning departure from Johannesburg that is!

15. Bloemfontein

Bloemfontein makes for a long day trip from Johannesburg, but it’s worth the drive to see South Africa’s judicial capital in all its glory.

The city center is awash with lawyers rushing from attractive building to attractive building.

Among them are several interesting museums, including a detailed Boer War Museum.

The city’s Loch Logan Waterfront complex is a nice place to do some shopping, before relaxing on the lake edge with a drink as the sun descends on another day in paradise.

15. Croc City Crocodile & Reptile Park

Croc City has guided tours daily from 9 am to 4:30 pm which features reptile interaction, where all visitors are given the opportunity to safely interact with various reptiles (Including a croc-hatchling). Crocodile feeding happens on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 pm. They do a venomous snake show, which is very popular, every Sunday at 11 am. Additionally, in 2014 they opened a Zip-line which we call a Flyover; the only one of its kind in Africa where you can safely fly over the crocodile enclosures!

Calisto’s Portuguese Restaurant

(Gillview, Johannesburg) Rated: 4.7

Rooted in vibrant traditions and bursting with rich flavours, Calisto’s Portuguese Restaurant in Gillview does not disappoint. Known for serving the best flame-grilled chicken, flavour-packed trinchado and espadas, and the freshest seafood around (including the beloved prawns), this family-run restaurant has a slew of 5-star reviews, making it one of Jozi’s favourite spots to grab a hearty meal and share a jug of sangria. When you step inside, you’re met with a warm dining room, complete with gingham tablecloths and lanterns dangling from the rafters. For families, there’s a great outdoor kids ’ play area with slides, climbing structures, and ample space to run around while parents unwind inside.

Ciro’s

Inspired by the farm-to-fork movement, Chef Ciro Molinaro’s restaurant champions the traditions of seasonal , family-style slow food, where each ingredient is the hero of the dish. From hand-made pasta and pizza, to small cichetti, mains and tempting desserts on the menu , Ciro’s truly earns its reputation for being one of Joburg’s top-rated eateries. Nestled between art galleries and contemporary stores, the restaurant offers tables on the shaded veranda and in the courtyard under vines hanging from the trellises above. Inside, a cosy fireplace awaits on wintery evenings, making it a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Tip: In a hurry? Take a detour through to their deli and grab a delicious meal to-go.

We had a wonderful first visit at Ciro’s. Sitting outside was lovely, especially since there are not many places one can do that in JHB. Pasta was homemade and truly one of the best I’ve had in SA. Definitely try it out for a date night or dinner with friends.

Looking for a spot to hang out with your friends, enjoy hearty food, throw back some ice-cold drinks and listen to musicians play while catching a live game ? Then be sure to check out Fu-Bar. Conveniently located behind a driving range and just around the corner from Padel courts, they’re fast becoming Sandton’s go-to hangout spot, promising an unforgettable experience no matter the occasion.

Great spot for a festive Friday or Sunday afternoon. Love the bands/DJ. Food was good and the service was great. I’ll definitely go back.

George’s Grill House

(Germinston & Sandton) Rated: 4.7

When it comes to the perfect cut of meat, owner George Kutra knows a thing or two. George’s Grill House is a traditional steakhouse offering a one-of-a-kind dining experience. The modern menu , inspired by the Mediterranean, showcases superior dry and wet-aged matured cuts of meat, hand-selected by George himself. Reviewers praise everything, from the laid-back atmosphere to the excellent service, delicious food, and personal touch. These 5-star reviews landed them a top 100 spot in the Reviewers’ Choice Awards 2023 !

Absolutely loved everything about the restaurant! The service was amazing, the food tasted incredible and made everything extra special for the occasion. Definitely will be going back soon.

The contemporary menu , lovingly created by his long-time personal chef, Xoliswa Ndoyiya, features dishes inspired by all of his favourites. On Sundays, join them for their jazz lunch from 12h00 – 15h00, and celebrate everything Madiba cherished.

This was an incredibly unique experience for me. Dining in Mandela’s actual home, surrounded by artefacts of his makes this a truly special evening. The staff were wonderful and really made you feel “at home”.

When it comes to authentic Turkish cuisine, Istanbul Kebab in Melrose Arch tops the charts. Since opening in 2023, over a thousand reviews have poured in, praising their Mediterranean menu packed with delicious options including döner kebabs, wood-fired lahmacun (flatbreads topped with mince, cheese and herbs) and, of course, mixed platters. When making a reservation, book for the whole family! Their portions are generous and you’ll want to sample a bit of everything. If you’re in Sunninghill , don’t miss their second location, and be sure to pop in to their on-site butchery.

(Hyde Park, Sandton) Rated: 4.7

Visit Just Teddy in Hyde Park and step into an enchanting world where Parisian flair meets Middle Eastern flavours. This isn’t your average afternoon tea! From the moment you arrive, you can expect impeccable service and a luxurious atmosphere that’s captured the hearts of those who appreciate life’s finer things. It’s a great choice for marking special occasions, from birthdays to kitchen teas and bachelorettes. If you’re vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free, simply let them know ahead of time and they’ll whip up something delicious just for you.

Great ambience and attention to detail. Enjoyed all the sweet bakes. My first visit and will definitely be back again.

With nothing but glowing reviews, the Lapa has become a favourite spot for locals and out-of-towners to catch a live game on the rooftop, enjoy a traditional braai from their menu , sip on a cocktail, and catch up with the “boets” over a top-class burger and beer.

With an extensive menu featuring Mediterranean-inspired dishes that are as beautiful as they are tasty, it’s a great spot in the northern suburbs of Joburg to grab a tasty breakfast or lunch. Just be aware, Olives and Plates is very popular and gets super busy, so make sure you book ahead to secure your table.

The taste and the presentation of the food was phenomenal but what stood out for me was the service. Unbelievable service of the highest standard!

• The restaurants have to be located within the city of Johannesburg.
• Each restaurant must have received 60 or more public reviews within the past 12 months (from 1 April 2023 – 31 March 2024).

How can this be a true reflection when some of your restaurants chosen have barely 100 reviews ? set the criteria correctly, surly over a 1000 reviews and above 4,6 score says this is a consistent restaurant.

Hi Pino, we agree that consistency is key. For this blog post, we included places with over 60 reviews from the past 12 months (as of March 2024). We didn’t want to exclude smaller eateries or restaurants that recently joined Dineplan but had been gathering great reviews in a short time. This way, we can spotlight both the newcomers and the established favourites in Johannesburg.

This is in no way a complete list, but it should give you a good idea of what to expect and where to go when visiting for the first time. It’s the list of the very best things to do and places to see in South Africa .

I ranked this list by putting my own favorites on top. So if you are limited in time, I suggest that you start with the top of the list and work your way down. At the bottom of this article, you can also find the map indicating all the main tourist attractions in South Africa mentioned in this post. Find out!

If you want to visit every place from this list, you’ll need at least 3 weeks and it will be rushed. If you want to see all the best places in South Africa mentioned in this article AND have some time to explore somewhat deeper, you’ll probably need at least a month…

These are the best places to visit in South Africa:

1. Cape Town

If there is one place you absolutely have to see in South Africa, it’s Cape Town . It was the oldest European establishment in South Africa (1652) and is therefore often referred to as the Mother City.

It’s difficult to describe in just a few words what Cape Town is all about. You really have to experience it in order to be able to appreciate the mingle of African and European cultures, a mix of tradition and modern, and the unique blend of city life and nature…

If South Africa is the world in one country, then Cape Town is the world in one city. Absolutely not to be missed when visiting South Africa!

Here are some of the main places you have to see in Cape Town : Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, Table Mountain, Signal Hill & Lion’s Head, Robben Island, Bo-Kaap area, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Two Oceans Aquarium, and also the city center with its local markets, shops, restaurants, and museums.

TIP:  If the gondola to the top of Table Mountain is open, go there first. It often gets closed due to high winds, so don’t leave it for the last day.

2. Cape Peninsula

Together with Cape Town, Cape Peninsula  is one of the most impressive regions of South Africa. This is one of those places that you really don’t want to miss!

The absolute highlights of the Cape Peninsula include Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point and the stunning 12 Apostles   coastline from Camps Bay to Hout Bay and further south along Chapman’s Peak Drive .

Not to be missed is Simon’s Town with Boulder’s Beach penguin colony (yes, you can see wild penguins in South Africa!) and also an ocean walkway from  Muizenberg to Kalk Bay via St. James beach is really nice. Groot Constantia wine region in Cape Peninsula has spectacular scenery and some of the best wines in South Africa.

Also, in Hout Bay you can take a boat to see a seal colony – it’s called Duiker Island , but most people just refer to it as Hout Bay Seal Island. This is a very popular tourist attraction, so you may want to book in advance. For a more unique experience, you can even go snorkeling with the seals .

TIP: One day is hardly enough to see the highlights of Cape Peninsula. So if you can, try to spend at least a few days in this area. I recommend at least a week for Cape Town and Cape Peninsula, with 3-4 days being an absolute minimum.

3. The Garden Route

Another absolutely amazing region, the Garden Route is one of those places you really have to see in South Africa as well. This +-200km stretch between Mossel Bay and Stormsrivier is one of the most scenic routes in the world, but you have to take the time in order to truly appreciate it.

You could drive the Garden Route in just half a day, but you won’t see much just by sitting in the car. So ideally you take at least a couple of days to explore this area. 

Some of the nicest places along the Garden Route are Storms River and Tsitsikamma National Park , Robberg Nature Reserve , Plettenberg Bay , the whole area around Knysna (don’t miss the Heads and the Featherbed Private Nature Reserve!), Wilderness , and the beautiful coastline along the entire route.

Oudtshoorn , famous for its ostrich farms and Cango Caves , is a bit out of the way from the rest, but it’s also considered as part of the Garden Route. Well worth a visit.

TIP: If you are traveling with kids or if you just love wildlife, don’t miss Monkeyland and Birds of Eden   (both just next to each other). Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve is a great place for a family-friendly safari along the Garden Route and Knysna Elephant Park is one of the best ethical places to interact with elephants in South Africa. 

4. Kruger National Park

Without any doubt, Kruger National Park is one of the best-known places to visit in South Africa. If you want the best wildlife safari experience in South Africa, then Kruger NP is definitely the place to be.

Kruger is the oldest and also the biggest National Park in South Africa. To give you an idea, with 2,000,000 hectares (20,000 km 2 ), it’s about the size of Israel or the state of New Jersey. In other words, Kruger NP is huge! Ideally, you plan to spend at least 2-3 days in Kruger NP and make several game drives.

Hundreds of animal species call Kruger home and it’s also the best place to see the Big 5 in South Africa. The Big 5 refers to five most difficult African animals to hunt on foot: lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and Cape buffalo. Hunting is really not cool anymore, but this term is widely used as a sort of ‘5 must-see African animals’ list.

There are 101 ways to explore Kruger National Park. You can opt for one of the many luxury lodges and private safari rides , organized day tours , or you can drive and explore Kruger NP with your own car. No matter which way you choose to explore Kruger National Park, it’s a place that you really must see in South Africa!

TIP: Combine a visit to Kruger National Park with the nearby Panorama Route and Blyde River Canyon (see below).

5. Blyde River Canyon & Panorama Route

Blyde River Canyon is one of the most beautiful natural landmarks of South Africa. It’s also one of the largest canyons in the world.  Due to its proximity to several main entrances of Kruger National Park, Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve and the whole Panorama Route make a very popular day trip in the area.

Together with Kruger NP, Blyde River Canyon is one of the most popular tourist attractions in northern South Africa.

Start your day with breakfast at the famous Harrie’s Pancakes in Graskop . Then head north to the Pinnacle , God’s Window , and Wonder View . Further highlights of the Panorama Route include Lisbon Falls and Berlin Falls , also  Bourke’s Luck Potholes , and Lowveld viewpoint . But the most impressive of them all is the Three Rondavels viewpoint . The scenery here is simply spectacular!

Three Rondavels was one of the first places we visited just after arrival in South Africa and that image stayed with us forever. It was here that we fell in love with this amazingly diverse country and realized that it has so much more to offer than we ever imagined… Don’t miss if you are visiting Kruger NP and have a day to spare!

If you have more time, you can also consider a visit to the Echo Caves  or a small museum-town called Pilgrim’s Rest.

6. Hermanus

Hermanus is my husband’s favorite place in South Africa, one we always wish we had stayed longer at…

The town itself isn’t that special, but its coastline is second to none! Grab a picnic and explore the beautiful coastal walking path. The bay near Hermanus is known as the best place to see whales and dolphins in South Africa and it definitely lives up to its reputation!

You can take a whale watching boat tour and get really close to these majestic animals, but you can usually also see them from ashore. Both experiences are very different and each special in their own way. I really recommend both – taking the boat tour and also walking the coastal route in Hermanus and watching whales and dolphins from the shore.

Please note that whales are not always around. The best time to see whales in Hermanus is between June and December, but some years they arrive earlier or leave later, so you just never know. 

We have been on many whale-watching tours all over the world, but nowhere did we see so many whales from so close by as in Hermanus. There were tens of whales just meters away from our boat… We also saw hundreds of dolphins while walking along the coast. It sure is one of the best places to go whale – and dolphin-watching in the world.

TIP: Nearby Gansbaai is also a beautiful place with a stunning coastline and a good chance to see the whales. It’s not as well known and therefore much less visited than Hermanus, but it’s a perfect place to visit for those who have more time in the area and looking to discover some off-beat hidden gems.

7. South Africa Wine Region: Stellenbosch and Franschhoek

South Africa has become world-famous for its wines and the best region to see the wineries and taste some wines is the beautiful area between  Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Franschhoek.

This wine region is just a short drive from Cape Town and is therefore really easy to visit, even if you only have limited time in South Africa.

Stellenbosch and Paarl are bigger towns and I’m not sure if they are worth a visit, but the nearby wineries and the surrounding scenery is a must. We loved the quaint little Franschhoek town with its white buildings, hilly landscapes, and a very cozy atmosphere. Such a beautiful region – a place you have to see in South Africa!

TIP: Don’t drink and drive! If you are staying in Cape Town, you can visit the wine region with an organized day tour. Here is one of the best-rated and most complete wine region tours from Cape Town  that I was able to find. 

8. Cape Agulhas – Southernmost Tip Of Africa

Cape Agulhas, the Southernmost place in Africa , is so far from every other landmark in South Africa and main tourist routes that it doesn’t get the attention it deserves. But what a beautiful and unique place it is!

Standing at this point where two oceans meet you truly feel like you’ve reached the end of the world…

The best way to visit Cape Agulhas is by making a stop there on your way from Cape Town to the Garden Route (or vice versa). We once did it in a day, just stopping there when driving from Knysna to Cape Town, but it was a really long drive.

TIP: I suggest that you break the drive and either stay in Cape Agulhas or in the area around Hermanus or Gansbaai for one night.

9. Drakensberg

Another wonderful region a bit off the beaten tourist path in South Africa is the Drakensberg mountains . The Dragon Mountain is a +-200km mountain range between the Kingdom of Lesotho and KwaZulu Natal province in South Africa, a few hours drive from Durban. 

The region is known for its incredible vistas, countless waterfalls, mountain streams, rock pools, caves, and tranquil scenery pretty much undisturbed by human development. The Drakensberg is the highest mountain range in South Africa and if you visit here in the winter (July) as we did, be prepared for the freezing cold temperatures at night.

Theoretically, you could visit the Drakensberg region just for a day, but ideally, you spend at least a couple of days here. There is a wide range of outdoor activities available, such as hiking or golf to mention just a few…

TIP: If you stay close to the Underberg area (we stayed at this hotel ), you can pop over the border and visit Lesotho for a day ( day tours are available too). 

10. Addo Elephant National Park

If you are looking for a malaria-free family-friendly safari experience in Africa, Addo Elephant National Park is one of the very best places to do that.

South Africa’s third-largest National Park is located in the southern part of the country, close to Port Elizabeth and just a few hours drive from the Garden Route.

As the name suggests, Addo Elephant NP is a perfect place to see wild elephants. This park is home to over 600 elephants and they are all around. Many other African animals live here as well and if you are really lucky, you may even get to spot The Big 5…

TIP: You can easily explore the park on a self-drive safari. But – as always – a guided open-jeep safari tour will give you a very different experience. If you come here for a few days and have your own car, I suggest you do both – visit the park on your own but also book at least one safari ride.

11. iSimangaliso Wetland Park

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, iSimangaliso Wetland Park has a lot to more to offer than it looks at first sight. It’s not that widely known and definitely not one of the main tourist attractions in South Africa, but it’s well worth a trip.

iSimangaliso Wetland Park has it all: beautiful scenery, unique landscapes, white-sand beaches, snorkeling, diving, and lots of wildlife. You can expect to see rhino, zebra, buffalo, troop baboons, wildebeest, and even elephants, to name just a few…

One of the main reasons tourists visit this area is to see hippos in the wild. iSimangaliso Wetland Park is a paradise for water-loving animals and is, therefore, one of the best places to see hippos and crocodiles in South Africa .

TIP: You can visit the park by car, but if you really want to get close to the hippos and the crocodiles in a safe way, it’s best to book St. Lucia estuary boat tour . The boat tour takes just two hours, so you can spend the rest of the time self-driving and exploring the park.

12. Pilanesberg National Park

Just over 2 hours drive from Johannesburg, Pilanesberg National Park is probably one of the easiest and best-accessible places for a wildlife safari in South Africa.

Pilanesberg Game Reserve is set in an extinct volcanic crater, where the soil is rich with grasslands, perfect for wildlife. A man-made lake, Mankwe Dam, is used as a drinking waterhole – a perfect place to see African animals.

Wildlife here includes zebras, lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and many other species. Because the park is rather small, it’s quite easy to find the animals, even if you come here just for a few hours.

TIP: You can visit Pilanesberg National Park  as a day trip from Johannesburg , but if you have some time to spare, stay a few days. If you like places like Las Vegas in the US , don’t miss the nearby  Sun City with entertainment for young and old.

From luxury resorts and casinos, waterparks and golfing, to outdoor activities, wildlife viewing, and even hot air balloon safari – this area truly has it all.

13. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park

One can never have too many safari experiences in Africa, right? So if you are visiting St.Lucia/Durban area, then I really recommend a day trip to  Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park .

This park is not as well known as Kruger and the other National Parks mentioned above, but it’s just as beautiful and offers amazing wildlife viewing. Africa’s Big 5 live here and, of course, many other animals.

TIP: You can visit this park on a self-drive safari or take a guided safari tour from Durban . If you want to make the best of your short time, you can also opt for a tour that combines Hluhluwe and iSimangaliso Wetlands, mentioned above.

14. West Coast National Park

Just an hour drive north of Cape Town, West Coast National Park is the locals’ favorite, so if you come in a warm season, expect it to be busy. This park has beautiful beaches, stunning coastlines, scenic hiking trails, wildlife, and lots of wildflowers.

Springtime (August – September) is the best time to see the flowers and the park might be even busier than usual. 

West Coast National Park is considered a real jewel. It’s not a must-see in South Africa if you are short on time, but if you are staying in Cape Town and have a day to spare, definitely check it out!

TIP: There aren’t many facilities here; it’s all about nature. So if you come for a day, make sure to bring some food and plenty of water. 

Durban is considered one of the cities that you should see in South Africa. We found that there were better ways to spend our time in South Africa than visiting its cities… so we didn’t stay in Durban longer than necessary. Just in case you wonder, Cape Town is a whole other story, one city you have to see.

Nevertheless, if you are traveling in this area, you shouldn’t miss Durban. One of the best things to do here is go to the beach and stroll the Golden Mile , visit UShaka Marine World  or Durban Botanic Gardens .

Durban is also a good base for a day trip to the earlier mentioned Hluhluwe-iMfolozi NP and iSimangaliso Wetland Park, and also to the Drakensberg mountains. A really interesting thing to do in Durban is also this Shakaland and Zulu culture day trip .

TIP: If you are short on time, fly from Durban to Port Elizabeth or Cape Town – it will save you lots of driving. 

16. Johannesburg

The largest city in South Africa, Johannesburg’s history goes back to the 19th century. It’s hard to believe that this bustling city with a population of 1 million started as a gold-mining settlement.

If you want to learn about South Africa’s long part to democracy, then don’t miss Soweto township ( go with a guide! ) which was once home to Nelson Mandela and also Desmond Tutu. 

Must-see in Johannesburg is the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill , a former prison complex. Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, and tens of thousands of others were imprisoned here at some point in South Africa’s turbulent history…

17. Namaqua National Park & Namaqualand

Namaqualand and Namaqua National Park , close to the Namibian border, are so far from all the other tourist attractions in South Africa that you’ll hardly ever see it mentioned as one of the best places to visit in the country. It’s actually more of a hidden gem of South Africa.

Come spring and the dusty valleys are transformed into a magical wildflower wonderland. The whole area is covered in colorful flower carpet, attracting local visitors and international tourists alike.

2 weeks is the minimum time if you want to see the most beautiful places of South Africa. If you have about 10 days, spend 3 days in Kruger NP and fly to the south of the country for the rest of the trip. If you have 1 week or less, it’s best to concentrate on just one area – either Kruger NP and surroundings or Cape Peninsula and the Garden Route.

The end of this month I am going to travel to South Africa by myself. I am 21 years old and I am from the Netherlands. The first 2 weeks I am going to work at an Baboon orphanage center in Phalaborwa, which is next to the Kruger National Park. In these two weeks I will have some free time to visit the Kruger Park on a safari. After the two weeks I have 4 weeks to travel by myself to see other beautiful places in South Africa, and stay in hostels etc. My idea is to take a flight after the two weeks from Hoedspruit airport to Durban or Kaapstad, and then stay there for a while and see other nice places. Do you guys have any tips for my journey?

Hi Jesse, this sounds like an amazing experience for you! With 4 weeks to travel in South Africa (and already having seen Kruger before), you can see a lot. Durban - Drakensbergen area is nice, but I'd definitely try to spend more time in the south - the Garden Route, Cape Town, etc. If you are not renting a car, it will be a bit more difficult to explore outside the cities, but you can find a lot to do in/near them too. If you choose just one place, then Cape Town is really the best option. And you can also take some tours if there are some places you absolutely want to see and can't easily get to on your own. Although all these top restaurants in Johannesburg are highly recommended, I wanted to share my personal favorites:

Urbanologi is a unique dining concept located in the Mad Giant Brewery. The restaurant and brewery can be found in Ferreiras Dorp – the heart of Johannesburg.

The Asian-fusion restaurant serves urban garde cuisine in a modern industrial space resulting in an unusual dining experience. With a relaxed ambiance and a trendy atmosphere, Urbanologi is popular with diners throughout the city.

However, many of the patrons were young students from the local University. Bright splashes of colorful graffiti result in a youthful vibrance.

Dining at Urbanologi

We started with some drinks, specifically a cocktail and an ale brewed on-site.

The Jozi Thyme cocktail which is one of their signature drinks is made of a unique combination of ingredients. However, these elements blended into the perfect drink. Smooth, sweet, and full of flavors, I could barely taste the alcohol.

The Super Session Cannabis Ale caught our attention and was very tasty. A well-brewed craft beer that should definitely be sampled at Urbanologi. Therefore, I highly suggest that you enjoy a signature cocktail or craft beer during your meal.

The food at Urbanologi is experimental in design but very tasty. Their menu changes with the season and according to what is available. Locally sourced ingredients ensure that dishes are sustainable. The meals come in smaller portions and the dishes are best for sharing.

We enjoyed the Ciabatta and Goats Cheese Board as starters. However, the variety of cheeses really got our attention. Each dish was served with a number of sauces, dips, jams, butter, and other goodies.

For the main course, we sampled the Duck Breast and the Lamb Loin. Both the duck and the lamb were soft, juicy, and delicious. Therefore, it was difficult to choose our favorite. The dishes had a number of vegetables and sauces that added to the flavor.

Dessert truly was the highlight of this lunch and was exceptional. We had the Rolled Oat Mousse and Banna Malt Gelato. The mousse was divine – fluffy and only sweetened by the raspberries and syrup below it. However, the gelato was just as good and combined with a brownie made of pure cacao.

Che Argentine Grill

Che Argentine Grill is another terrific restaurant in an up-and-coming area of Johannesburg.

Maboneng like Ferreiras Dorp is situated on the outskirts of the CBD and is part of the current rejuvenation of the city. The area is much safer than it was in the past and is made up of businesses such as Che Argentine Grill which contributes to its revival.

Therefore, this restaurant is quite popular with travelers and a great dining spot for locals as well. The owners are originally from Argentina and they got their start by selling their local fare at markets. Due to the popularity of their empanadas, they were able to open a restaurant and share more of their cuisine with Johannesburg.

We joined them for one of their events recently and really enjoyed the experience. The Argentinian event we attended was quite fun and the atmosphere was energetic.

Dining at Che Argentine Grill

Upon arrival, we got to taste their signature Iona wines before we were seated. We then sampled some cocktails, specifically Caiprihina’s.

Most people in South Africa just don’t know how to make these cocktails so we were eager to try the Argentinian versions. We had Che’s Caiprihina which included grapefruit and naartjie and the Latin Caiprihina which was flavored with ginger and chilli. Both were superbly mixed, but the latter was quite hot.

For starters, we tried those famous Empanada that are pies. The pastry is full of beef and a selection of vegetables. Served with a traditional tomato puree it was one of the best pies I have ever had.

Next up was the Churizo which was spicy and full of rich flavours. All meals are prepared from traditional recipes and are typical Argentinian fare.

Our main course was Pork Ribs which they cooked on an open fire outside. The meal included crispy chips and a freshly made salad. The meat was soft, juicy, and very tasty. There was a good mix of meat and fat but it was very rich.

We ended the lunch with authentic Argentinian desserts. We tried the Pancake with Vanilla ice cream and the Flan. Both desserts were served with a toffee or caramel sauce that is common in Argentina. It was such a yummy way to end our meal at Che Argentine Grill .

Parea is an authentic Greek restaurant located in the lovely area of Illovo. The central location is right within the corporate environment of Johannesburg and as a result, is busy at all times.

Parea is a large but inviting space with a very lively energy. The restaurant is decorated in whites and blues in a typical Greek style. However, the open terrace with its red and green fairy lights is the prime spot for diners. With such a special ambiance and bright beautiful lighting, it attracts many people who drive along this busy street.

And the spectacular food makes sure that people return. We had the pleasure of dining at Parea on a Friday night and got to enjoy the festivities. On weekend evenings Parea provides live entertainment for a festive vibe. The entertainment that night included traditional Greek dancers, plate-breaking, as well as talented belly dancers.

Dining at Parea

We began the evening with some cocktails since it was a Friday night. During the night we tried the Strawberry Daquiri which was amazing, the Caiprhina which was very strong, and the well-prepared Mojito.

The starters were a tapas-style array of choices that we really enjoyed. We sampled the Pita Bread with four tasty dips before trying the traditional Greek Salad. Next, we had the Calamari Tubes and Squid Heads which was my favourite. At the same time, we tried the Fried Brinjals in a tomato sauce with melted feta which was rather interesting.

We really enjoyed the variety of starters we sampled at Parea .

For the main course, we had the Parea Line Fish served with Chicken Kebabs and an Endive Salad. The fish was well cooked and so soft it fell apart after we added some sauce.

We loved the taste of the well-prepared kebabs as well. The salad was unique and the main course as a whole was very filling. The portions at Parea are quite large and you will leave feeling satisfied.

Our dessert was quite authentic as we tried the Baklava with ice cream and the Greek yogurt sweetened with nuts and honey. Both dishes were scrumptious and uniquely Greek.

Our experience at Parea was overwhelmingly positive and we are eager to return to try some more of their meals as the menu is quite large.

Dukes Burgers

Dukes Burgers is a hidden gem in the lively neighborhood of Greenside. This vibrant space in Johannesburg is always busy as it offers plenty of entertainment options.

Dukes Burgers has the best gourmet burgers in the city. As you duck in off the street you are greeted by a space decorated with regal purples and an interesting collection of items. Head further in and you will find the secluded courtyard at the back. Dine in the fresh air in this secret spot protected by big leafy trees. The causal atmosphere, friendly staff, and peaceful surroundings will have you feeling relaxed instantly.

We had lunch at Duke’s and I just want to mention that the portions are huge, so make sure you arrive hungry.

Dining at Dukes Burgers

As usual, we tried their cocktails, but I was tempted to also try their unique alcoholic milkshakes. During lunch, we tried the Rainbow which was very sweet and colorful, the Blood Orange Coco Mojito which was a delicious blend, and a Watermelon Mint G&T which was refreshing.

For a starter, we shared the Firestarters and they were really spicy. These crumbed pickled jalapenos were stuffed with cream cheese, mozzarella, feta, and mixed herbs.

We chose not to have two starters as the portions are incredibly generous at Duke’s and we could barely finish all our food. Luckily we took home some leftovers and could enjoy it all over again.

Dukes offers burgers made from a variety of different meats. Whether you want the usual beef and chicken or want to try something a bit different like lamb or ostrich, there is a patty and burger combo for you.

We had the Feather Duster which has an ostrich patty in a BBQ sauce topped with melted blue cheese, mushrooms, and crispy bacon – absolutely incredible. The flavours mixed perfectly and I enjoyed every bite.

We also tried the Snow White which had a lamb patty topped with mint jelly and thin apple slices – such a unique combination but amazing.

Both burgers were served with sweet potato crisps which are a healthy alternative to chips.

For dessert, we savored their large pies and ice cream which was simply divine. We had the mixed berry pie the apple crumble pie and left Dukes feeling full but happy.
