10 Things I Learned About Cunard’s World Cruises
We recently returned home after nine nights on Cunard’s Queen Victoria. We were onboard for the first segment, sailing from Southampton to New York. This was the first segment or leg of Queen Victoria’s 98-night World Voyage. Our ship and Queen Mary 2 sailed out of Southampton the same night, with the QM2 beginning its world cruise, sailing in the opposite direction! We have done a leg of the voyage a few times. We have learned a lot.
- It is iconic. This voyage marks 100 years Cunard has been doing world cruises. During the voyage I interviewed several of the ship’s officers. I learned when the UK National Lottery was launched, the press asked people what they would do with the money if they won. Two of the top answers were “Book a round the world cruise on the QE2” and “Fly on the Concorde.” The round the world cruise has a special place in people’s imagination.
- It’s a bucket list thing…or is it? I would think sailing around the world is something most people would do once, then check off their bucket list and move onto the next item. There are many passengers on the world cruise who take this 3+ month trip as an annual event! It’s like a club! They see each other once a year, yet are side by side for those three months.
- It has it’s own language. As you could imagine, our icebreaker question aboard Queen Victoria was “Are you on for the full 98 nights?” We later learned the slang expression among those passengers was “Doing the world.” “We are doing the world” was their way of saying “We are on for the full 98 nights.”
- It creates it’s own demand. Queen Victoria carries about 2,000 passengers. How many can give up 14 weeks of home life to sail around the world? I guessed about 400, maybe 600. The rest of the cabins would be occupied by people like us, sailing for one of two segments. I was wrong! On this voyage, 1,200 passengers were “Doing the world.”
- What is a passengers biggest expense? Surprisingly, it’s not their bar bill or internet service. The largest expense for many passengers is booking their next voyage! The ship has a future booking office onboard. In years past there was always a line. Now it seems they have moved to an appointment schedule. Friends we know who are “Doing the world” booked their 2024 world cruise early in the voyage. Unlike shorter cruises, it seems there are no upgrades and discounting is minimal.
- How passengers save money. Fares for the World Cruise start around $16,000 per person for an inside cabin, double occupancy. Add another $3,000 for a window and a further $5,000 for a balcony, bringing you to $23,000+ per person. Suppose, like us, you enjoy wine and spend $100/day between the two of you. That’s about another $10,000! You need ways to keep costs under control. Cunard charges for it’s Internet package, but Internet at sea can be pretty poor. Some passengers skip Internet access on the ship and visit a McDonalds or Starbucks in each port to catch up on their e-mails! The ship also offers drinks packages and bottle packages at decent prices.
- The world community onboard. The World Cruise passengers have their own dedicated lounge space (in the Winter Garden). If you don’t know everybody already, you need a way to make friends. Cunard has abundant social gatherings. Many are held daily. The solo travelers meet twice a day. I have heard this is wildly popular and the gathering expands in all directions. There are service club meetings, a Christian fellowship gathering and a Womens Institute meeting to name just a few. The trivia sessions, held four times a day (!) draw a huge crowd.
- The cabin party phenomenon. Years ago, we lived in New York City. Back then, going out to the Hamptons on Long Island was what many Manhattanites did to escape the heat. People who buy a “share” in a house, giving them a bed to sleep in every weekend from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Each house would throw a party once during the summer. Summer weekend residents of the other houses would attend. Hosting a party for others became the admission ticket to all the other’s parties! The World Cruise seems to work the same way. A couple will host a cabin party. Many will attend, perhaps spilling out into the corridor. This party gets that couple invited top the other cabin parties held during the 98 night voyage!
- Touring on land. Cunard offers excellent tours in various ports. Many are creative. They are carefully described in terms of degree of strenuous activity. Visiting dozens of ports and buying tours can start to get expensive. We have met people whose strategy is to identify the iconic hotel in the city and book a table for lunch at their restaurant. These seasoned travelers are encyclopedias of good information. We learned going to the bar at Raffles in Singapore and ordering the famous “Singapore Sling” is the thing to do. Since every tourist wants to do it, the drinks are wildly expensive. Having lunch at a different restaurant in the hotel is a luxurious experience and money well spent. We learned the Marina Bay Sands luxury hotel in Singapore (Three towers with the huge deck on top – You saw it in Crazy Rich Asians. ) is breathtaking, but elevator service to get back to ground level leaves something to be desired.
- People are friendly and equal. Your Cunard keycard recognizes your World Club status, but not the category of accommodation you have booked. Friends have told us although the Grill level accommodations have exclusivity, many Grill guests choose to attend the solo traveler gatherings or dining in the main Britannia restaurant from time to time. Generally speaking, we have found I would like to invite anyone we have met on Cunard over to our house for dinner! Staff treat everyone as kings and queens, regardless of the length of their voyage or the cost of accommodation.
Yes, “Doing the world” is still on the list of things I would like to do during our lifetime.

Bryce, You should have stayed on board with us! As we head into Abu Dhabi next Sunday, we’ve had great weather and port visits! Your article is spot on! The Singapore Sling was $37SD at Raffles (I’d do that again!) I just need to figure out when to retire before booking my next world cruise! Cheers From Table 139!
Bryce, we were doing Southampton to Sydney on the same voyage. 2023 was unusual – there’s normally circa 400 but due to Covid there were three-years’-worth of World Voyagers, hence 1200. Expect the numbers to reduce again. It was so good we are going to do the second half at some point!

Cunard World Cruises
If you’re ready for the adventure of a lifetime, where you’ll find a decade’s worth of memories and unique experiences, it’s time to consider a World Voyage with Cunard Line. Spend months cruising from Europe to Africa, Australia, Asia, and the Middle East, and each destination will be rich with art to view, cuisine to indulge upon, and fascinating history to enrich yourself with. You may have the opportunity to purchase sapphires and rubies in Sri Lanka, or tour some breweries in Australia. From dining on the Mediterranean coast to immersing yourself in the cultural hubs of Asia, you can do it all on a Cunard Line World cruise.
Things to Do on a World Cruise with Cunard Line
Get ready to cross off some major spots on your bucket list when you embark on a world cruise with Cunard Line. For instance, you can visit the Taj Mahal in India, see the Valley of the Kings in Egypt and attend a gaucho party in Argentina.
- Paris and Seine River Cruise (Paris, France) First you’ll see some major Parisian sites on land during a guided ride through the city. You’ll see famed sites like the Champs Elysees, the Arc de Triomphe and the Place de l’Opera. Then you’ll board a river ship on the Seine River to see some more of Paris’ never ending wonders. On the cruise you’ll pass the Chaillot Palace and Orsay Museum. Onboard you’ll have a lunch where the flavors of France will be on full display. Then finish the day shopping in the city’s beautiful boutiques.
- The Taj Mahal Overland (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) Take a 5-day trip to see the amazing Taj Mahal. This marble mausoleum was built to honor the emperor’s late wife and has stood as a testament to love in the years since. Your trip will also include a day in Kuala Lumpur where you’ll see the National Palace and ride to the top of the Petronas Twin Towers for a majestic view. You’ll also visit New Delhi, the capital of India.
- Gaucho Party (Buenos Aires, Argentina) Experience the rich history of gauchos in Argentina at a gaucho party. When you arrive at this party, which is held at a country residence, you’ll be greeted with Argentinian specialties like empanadas and wine. You’ll have a great view of the pampas, or lowlands, of the country as you enjoy an Asado party. Then you’re in for a show as people will perform traditional songs and dances while the horse riders show off their skills.
- Essence of Australia Overland (Sydney, Australia) Spend three days exploring the land down under. On day one you’ll head to Melbourne where you’ll see the Koala Conservation Centre on Phillip Island. Stay late to watch the Penguin Parade where wild penguins emerge from the water and walk across the beach to burrow in sand dunes. The next day you’ll board the Puffing Billy railway train for a ride through the scenic countryside. Then you’ll head to the Yarra Valley wine district for some tastings. Lastly, head to Brisbane for some more wildlife viewing.
- Swinging 60’s San Francisco (San Francisco, California) Head out on a magic bus to Chinatown and then to North Beach, where the beatniks hung out. You’ll see the City Lights bookstore, a favorite of Jack Kerouac. Then you’ll head to the famed intersection of Haight-Ashbury. You’ll get off at Golden Gate Park, the site of the first Human Be-In, and possibly join in on a drum circle. When back on the bus you’ll watch video and hear music from the era.
- Luxor, Karnak and Valley of the Kings (Safaga, Egypt) The Temple of Karnak is a huge complex that was an important spot for several pharaohs. While on this Cunard excursion, you’ll tour this site and then have a buffet lunch before heading out to Luxor. In Luxor you’ll visit the Valley of the Kings where many pharaohs were buried. It was here where the tomb of King Tut was found in 1922. This excursion is rich in history and you’ll be given plenty of time to take pictures of these stunning sites.

Best Places to Travel the World With Cunard
For over a century and a half, the iconic ships of cunard have defined sophisticated ocean travel. they have always been the most famous ocean liners in the world. a cunard world voyage brings some of the greatest sights right to your door, with illuminating guest speakers and creating gourmet cuisine to unlock the secrets of the destinations you will be visiting. from sydney harbor to the panama canal, the caribbean islands and the south pacific, the world is just a port away, when you experience it aboard cunard..
Courtesy of Cunard
If you've been inspired by the world cruise that's been making the rounds on social media, you have two new itineraries to consider. Cunard Line, a historic British cruise line dating back to 1840, has just announced more than 300 new voyages for the 2025–2026 season — and that includes two world cruises with overnights in cities like Singapore and Sydney.
The first of its world cruises is a 116-night sailing on Queen Anne , Cunard's new ship scheduled to launch in May. The 3,000-passenger ship will depart from Hamburg, Germany, on Jan. 6, 2026, continuing through the Mediterranean and eventually the Suez Canal. From there, Queen Anne will journey through the Middle East before making for Southeast Asia. The itinerary continues to Australia, then loops back through the Indian Ocean with stops at Mauritius and Réunion Island. The final leg brings guests to South Africa; Namibia; the Canary Islands; Madeira; and Southampton, U.K., before disembarkation in Hamburg on May 2, 2026.
The second world cruise is a 108-night sailing on Queen Mary 2. Guests embark in Southampton on Jan. 11, 2026, and immediately sail a transatlantic leg to New York. From there, the ship makes its way south to Curacao before crossing the Panama Canal. After a few stops on the west coast of North America, including Los Angeles and San Francisco, it's time to explore the Pacific islands: Hawaii and French Polynesia are on the docket. After that is a segment sailing to New Zealand and Australia, followed by a journey through Southeast Asia. Next up is the Middle East, a transit through the Suez Canal, and a final leg across the Mediterranean. Guests will disembark in Southampton on April 30, 2026.
Think more than 100 days on a cruise is a little too much for you? Don't worry — you can also book shorter segments of the itineraries if any of the destinations pique your interest.
On both Cunard world cruises, you can expect an old-school atmosphere as a nod to the cruise line's heritage. For instance, Gala Nights onboard are a formal affair, and many of them are themed: Roaring '20s, Masquerade Ball, and Black and White, for example. But that doesn't mean the ships lack modern amenities, like onboard WiFi.
Rates for the full world cruises start from $15,967 per person for the 116-night cruise and $16,699 per person for the 108-night cruise ; bookings open in early March.

What is a world cruise?
Never mind the moniker, a world cruise may visit several continents but not circumnavigate the globe. Cruise lines usually designate one ship (a few offer two) to sail about 100 days or longer — some even sail more than 200 days — without repeating ports.
World cruises traditionally start in January and end around April or May. They sail round-trip from one American city, such as San Francisco or Miami, or offer a choice of starting points on both coasts, making access easy.
What to know about world cruises
With so few world cruises available, book far in advance. Bookings open roughly two years in advance, and some small-ship cruises sell out within hours. You'll need the extra time to make arrangements to leave your home for months. For that reason, this story will focus on 2025 world cruises.
Related: Hot cruises you'll need to book at least 1 year in advance — maybe even 2!
Around-the-world cruise cost
Such lengthy sailings cost plenty. The bigger ship lines offer the lowest fares, although extra fees for what's not included (such as shore excursions and alcohol) can add up quickly. If contemplating a big-ship voyage, read the inclusions carefully, as they vary among lines.
Luxury vessels bundle many costly amenities into the fare, like business- or first-class plane tickets and luxury hotel stays, and charge the most. They also deliver fine dining, pampering service, glam surroundings and impressive special events. (Silversea Cruises has previously rented out an entire island to entertain its world cruise guests.)
Thus, expect considerable price differences. Count on spending about $20,000 per person minimum to score an entry-level accommodation on the bigger ships and approximately $80,000 to $90,000 per person for an ultraluxury vessel.
Note that for the poshest lines, "entry-level" may mean a spacious, elegant suite with a veranda. For other lines, the most basic cabin is a small, windowless room.

World Voyage
Thanks to an overwhelming response to its 2024 world cruise (which is currently waitlisted), Azamara announced itineraries for both 2025 and 2026, both aboard the 684-passenger Azamara Onward.
Azamara Onward is the newest ship to join the Miami-based line's four-vessel fleet. The ship's size provides an intimate experience and allows it to call on small towns bigger ships can't access.
For 2025, the 155-night, 37-country voyage begins in San Diego and ends in Southampton, England, with visits to exciting locales in French Polynesia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Italy, France and others.
Along the way, world cruisers can sample authentic Hawaiian cuisine; explore the unspoiled beaches and the lush rainforest on Stewart Island, New Zealand; and visit the world's largest Buddhist temple in Indonesia.
The itinerary will include a pre-sailing welcome party, exclusive cultural events, concierge service and other upscale perks.
The 2026 world cruise sets sail from Miami and concludes in Barcelona. The itinerary for this 155-night expedition features some of the world's most iconic landmarks and sites.
Cruisers will have the opportunity to explore the great pyramid of Kukulcan and other ancient Mayan sites in Chichen Itza, Mexico; wander among Rio de Janeiro's architectural gems and experience the awe of Iguazu Falls in Brazil; sample Peruvian cuisine and soak in the landscape of Machu Picchu in Cusco; scale the Great Wall of China; and enjoy other bucket-list worthy adventures.

The 2026 world cruise departs Jan. 6, 2026. Prices start from $85,141 per person.

If luxury and unparalleled personal service are important to you, consider Crystal 's 2025 world cruise aboard Crystal Serenity .
The beloved upscale line went bankrupt and stopped sailing in 2022. However, luxury tour operator Abercrombie & Kent acquired it and brought it back to life with a $150 million glow-up, starting with 740-passenger Crystal Serenity.
With newly renovated expansive suites, an array of social areas and nearly one staff member per guest, Crystal Serenity offers ultimate comfort, quality and personalization. Every cabin comes with a butler ready to assist with reservations, laundry and any other needs you have during your global odyssey.
Beginning in Fort Lauderdale and concluding in Barcelona, the sailing spans 123 nights with visits to 31 countries. The cruise kicks off with a welcome celebration, and guests can enjoy themed onboard and shoreside events and gala dinners throughout the sailing.
Exciting destinations along the way include Belize, Honduras, Argentina, Chile, South Africa, the Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Egypt and Jordan. Passengers can get a close-up look at Argentine tango through performances, enjoy street food in Sri Lanka's capital city and celebrate like a Greek god on Mount Olympus, among other events.
Custom excursions and pre- and post-cruise tours organized by Abercrombie & Kent are available along the way (for an additional cost).

Queen Anne's maiden World Voyage in 2025 will span 111 nights, beginning and ending in Hamburg, Germany. Along the way, guests can explore historic churches in the Old Town of Lubeck, Germany, a UNESCO World Heritage site; visit the historic city of Antigua, Guatemala's original capital; and indulge in retail therapy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's bustling shopping hub.
Passengers will enjoy spectacular new elements on this ship. The vessel's main pool area, The Pavilion, is topped with a gorgeous retractable glass roof that will act as a showpiece and also a functional structure to keep poolgoers dry on rainy days.
If you're seeking the most luxurious accommodations and exclusive experiences on board, book Princess or Queens Grill suites. Fares include outstanding amenities such as private dining rooms, coffee and specialty tea service, priority boarding, and a private outdoor lounge area.
Queens Grill suite passengers receive butler service, too. However, many lovely inclusions, such as white-gloved servers presenting complimentary daily tea, are available for all guests.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises
Navigate the World
World cruises prove perpetually popular on this ultraluxe line. They often sell out in the blink of an eye.
Availability is limited on the 2025 150-night world cruise on the 700-passenger Seven Seas Mariner, sailing round-trip from Miami to San Francisco. This itinerary includes cruising in Antarctica, the Chilean fjords, French Polynesia, Taipei and Bali.
Perhaps because its 2025 sailing is nearly sold out, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is one of the first cruise lines to announce its 2026 world voyage, also on Seven Seas Mariner.
This journey will be the line's longest, sailing for 154 nights and visiting 77 ports in 41 countries across six continents. The itinerary includes three new ports of call for Regent, including Lifou Island and Mare of the Loyalty Islands in the New Caledonia archipelago. Count on visiting 47 UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Australia's Great Barrier Reef and Robben Island in South Africa.
For all its around-the-world cruises, Regent piles on primo inclusions — first-class flights, unlimited shore excursions, luggage service, an open bar and a visa package are among countless amenities.

Wonderfully remote ports, like Cochin, India; Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; and Nuuk, Greenland, tempt travelers to come aboard for the long haul.

9 new around-the-world cruises have joined Royal Caribbean's Ultimate World Cruise at sea. See what they're like — from a sold-out 6-month luxury cruise to a cheaper $21,100 option.
- Nine new around-the-world cruises have already set sail in 2024.
- These ships joined Royal Caribbean's nine-month Ultimate World Cruise at sea.
- Oceania said its 2024 world cruise sold out in 30 minutes.
The Seven Seas just got a bit more crowded: Nine new world cruises have recently set sail, joining Royal Caribbean's ongoing Ultimate World Cruise in a quest to travel around the world in 2024.
TikTok has developed an obsession with Royal Caribbean's nine-month vacation . But it's not the only one of its kind — nor was it the most in-demand.
In 2021 and 2022, other operators also announced their global cruises, with one selling out 30 minutes after it was offered. Since the start of the new year, nine of these have already embarked. Take a look at which ones.
Oceania Cruises — the premium $48,500 six-month option
Oceania's 2024 world cruise was so hot that it sold out 30 minutes after reservations opened in March 2022, the premium cruise line said at the time.
After almost two years of waiting, these travelers finally set sail from Los Angeles on January 14. For the next 180 days, the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings subsidiary says the Insignia is set to sail to 96 ports in 34 countries.
The vessel is now on its way to Hawaii, the Pacific Islands, Australia and New Zealand, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Canada, according to its world cruise itinerary . This includes 24 expected overnight stays in destinations like Yangon, Myanmar, and Reykjavik, Iceland.
Oceania's cabins started at $48,500 per person.
Regent Seven Seas Seas Cruises — NCLH's $73,500 ultra-luxury 4 ½-month cruise
On January 6, the Seven Seas Mariner departed Miami on a roundtrip 132-night global expedition . Through May 17, the ship is set to stop at 66 ports in 31 countries — sailing to expected destinations in Central America, Hawaii, the Pacific Islands, New Zealand and Australia, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Bermuda.
Fares started at $73,500 per person for Regent Seven Seas' basic suite . Too cheap? The most luxurious 2,000-square-foot accommodation had a $200,000-per-person price tag.
Like Oceania, these fares didn't stop travelers from flocking to the luxury cruise . The ship was fully reserved in less than three hours when bookings opened in July 2021, Regent Seven Seas said at the time.
Azamara — a private equity-owned $39,000, five-month sailing
Azamara's sold-out 2024 world cruise departed on January 5 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Over the next 155 nights, the Azamara Onward plans to stop in 40 countries across Central and South America, the Pacific islands, New Zealand and Australia, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe before concluding in Barcelona.
There are 22 overnights scheduled throughout this world tour .
The private equity-owned cruise line's 2024 global adventure started at $39,000 per person for the windowless interior cabin. Travelers who prefer to cruise in luxury would've paid $157,000 per person for the highest-end suite.
Silversea Cruises — Royal Caribbean Group's $66,000 4 ½-month world cruise
Ultra-luxury Silversea's 2024 global vacation set sail on January 15 from San Francisco. Through May 26, the Silver Shadow is scheduled to see 65 ports in 14 countries.
Related stories
Unlike most world cruise itineraries, this one is scheduled to spend most of its 132 nights traversing the Pacific Ocean, sailing to the Pacific Islands, New Zealand and Australia, Southeast and East Asia, Alaska, and Canada before returning to San Francisco.
Silversea's fares started at $66,000 per person for the least expensive vista suite, cheaper than Regent Seven Seas' cruise of the same length.
Princess Cruises — Carnival Corp's almost four-month $21,100 vacation
On January 4, the Island Princess embarked on its 111-day world cruise from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with a second pickup scheduled in Los Angeles on Thursday. From there, travelers are expected to get to see 51 destinations in 27 countries across Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Europe, and the Americas, according to the Carnival Corp brand.
Fares started at almost $21,100 per person.
Regret not going on Princess' world cruise? There's another chance: The cruise line's second 2024 global itinerary is sailing in late April.
Seabourn Cruise Line — Carnival Corp's almost 5-month $74,300 itinerary
It seems like every major cruise giant has an ultra-luxury brand. Carnival Corp's is Seabourn — and on January 11, the Seabourn Sojourn departed Los Angeles on a 145-day, 72-port, 28-country cruise.
The sailing is set to conclude in Piraeus, Greece, near Athens, on June 5. Along the way, the itinerary shows the Seabourn Sojourn traveling east to destinations like Hawaii, Australia, China, Japan, Sri Lanka, Egypt, and Jordan.
The Sojourn is scheduled for 20 overnights in destinations like Cairns, Australia, and Honolulu.
Fares started at $74,300 per person.
Cunard — A 3 ½- and four-month cruise from Carnival Corp's UK-based operator
Luxury operator Cunard has two 2024 "world voyage" itineraries: 123 nights on the Queen Mary 2 and 107 nights on the Queen Victoria.
Queen Mary 2's four-month roundtrip New York City voyage departed on January 3, sailing east to 32 ports in the UK, Europe, Africa, Australia, Asia, and the Middle East, according to its itinerary.
Eight days later, the Queen Victoria also began its 3 ½-month roundtrip Southhampton, UK journey. According to the UK-based operator, the ocean liner is set to sail west to 29 ports in Bermuda, Aruba, Central and North America, the Pacific Islands, New Zealand and Australia, Asia, Africa, and Europe.
Cunard did not immediately respond to Business Insider's inquiry about its fares.
Holland America Line — the four-month roundtrip Florida cruise
On January 3, Holland America Line's world cruise guests would've moved onto the Zuiderdam to spend the next 127 nights circumnavigating the globe, according to the operator's itinerary.
This roundtrip Fort Lauderdale, Florida cruise is scheduled for 46 ports in the Caribbean, Central and South America, the Pacific Islands, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
Holland America did not immediately respond to Business Insider's inquiry about the itinerary's fares.

Already planning to see the next solar eclipse in 2026? What travelers need to know.
Umbraphiles feeling the post-eclipse blues should start checking the expiration date on their passports.
The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026, over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA .
In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.
Here’s what you’ll need to know before packing your bags:
Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?
The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.
Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.
Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.
One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality.
Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.
Is it better to see it from the beach?
Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .
Cruising Altitude: What it was like to see the eclipse from a plane
Will there be eclipse cruises or flights?
Almost certainly, although most operators have not announced specific plans yet.
Cruise lines will also offer more viewing opportunities. Princess Cruises “has created a bespoke itinerary aboard Sky Princess to position the ship near Spain on that date,” according to a spokesperson for the line. The cruise will open for bookings on Princess’s website on May 23.
Cunard Line has sailings on its Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria and Queen Anne vessels that will put passengers in prime spots to watch .
'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship
Holland America Line is also planning multiple sailings around the event, though details are still to be announced. “Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's vice president of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, previously told USA TODAY in an email.

A Retro Look At Cruises Through The Decades
Posted: November 29, 2023 | Last updated: November 29, 2023
Sailing through time
1830s: the very beginnings
1840s: the first pleasure cruises
1840s: a landmark in cruise-line history
1850–60s: early developments
Passenger cruising continued to develop through the mid-19th century, with luxuries like on-board lounges and simple entertainment emerging. Shown here, in 1856, is Cunard's RMS Persia, one of the largest ships of her time and an early Blue Riband winner (an award given for high-speed Atlantic crossings).
1870s: the New World
1880s: lighting up the ocean
1890s: “floating palaces”
1900s: entering cruising’s golden age
At the turn of the century, there was still a frisson around cruising and large, buzzy crowds would often gather to see off the ships. This nostalgic photograph was snapped between 1900 and 1915, and shows large steam boats leaving from the White Star Line dock in Detroit, Michigan. Well-dressed passengers fill the ships' upper and lower decks too.
1900s: the first purpose-built cruise ship
1910s: onboard entertainment
1910s: the Titanic disaster
One of the most famous and devastating events in cruise history occurred in this decade. Dubbed "unsinkable" by the White Star Line's vice-president, the Titanic set out from Southampton on her maiden voyage on 10 April 1912 to much applause. But just four days later, she collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic: the compartments in her hull filled with water and she tragically sank. The disaster claimed the lives of more than 1,500 people.
1910s: First World War
1920s: cruising’s golden age continued
1920s: setting the bar high
1920s: a festive feast
1920s: the first round-the-world cruise
Another major milestone came in the 1920s: the very first round-the-world cruise. The Cunard Line's RMS Laconia (pictured here leaving Liverpool circa 1920) sailed around the globe in 1922, calling at 22 ports along the way, and taking 450 lucky passengers with her.
1930s: all games on deck
1930s: making a splash
1940s: post-war cruising
1950s: the post-war decades
Come the 1950s, cruise ships had another phenomenon to compete with: jet planes. Commercial air travel boomed in this decade, with comfier aircraft and improved routes enticing travelers into the skies. Many cruise liners underwent swish post-war refits in an attempt to stay afloat: this 1950s photo shows the opulent dining room of French liner SS Île de France after a dramatic post-war makeover.
1950s: going Down Under
1950s: the Blue Riband record breaker
Though formalized in the 1930s, the Blue Riband – the award for the passenger cruise liner with the fastest Atlantic-crossing time – has its roots right back in the 19th century. The record is still held by SS United States of United States Lines, which first sped across the Atlantic in 1952. She's pictured here on 9 July 1952, docking in Southampton.
1960s: the Jet Age
1970s: The Love Boat
As flying became more commonplace, the popularity of cruising looked set to dwindle. However, one particular TV series is often credited with keeping travelers' passion for cruising alive. The Love Boat – aired from the 1970s – was a comedy series that followed the crew and passengers of luxury liner SS Pacific Princess. Such was its popularity, some say it brought cruising back into the mainstream once more. This shot shows Cunard Line's Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1975.
1970s: cruising opens up to the masses
1980s: the cruise to nowhere
The 1980s is thought to be the decade that pioneered the "cruise to nowhere," where the ship really was the destination. The SS Norway (pictured) – a lavish mega ship with room for thousands of passengers and amenities like a casino – embarked on a no-docking cruise in this decade.
1990s: Disney takes to the water
2000s: making waves in the modern world
The 2000s saw larger-than-life, no-expense-spared, mega cruise ships sail onto the scene. This sunset snap shows Cunard Line's Queen Mary II as she completes her first trans-Atlantic voyage in January 2004. At this time, she was the largest and most expensive cruise ship ever constructed with room for 2,200-plus passengers, a theater and even a planetarium, setting the bar for the ships of posterity.
2010s: bigger, better and healthier
2020s: off to a rocky start
The 2020s got off to an eventful start. The COVID-19 pandemic halted almost all cruises, with some passengers and crew marooned onboard while testing and entry protocols were debated. In 2021 rife cancellations, last-minute border changes and variant outbreaks persisted. However, the years since have indicated a return to pre-pandemic popularity, with 300 cruise ships departing in April 2022 – pretty impressive compared to just 22 departing in April 2021. Cruise lines have incorporated more health and safety protocols, such as advising passengers to control their TV, light and temperature via an app instead of touchpoints.
