How the Picard Season 3 Soundtrack Unlocks All of Star Trek

For World Music Day, let's look at how Picard's final score stretches across the entire final frontier, from familiar themes to deep sonic cuts.

Illustration of headphones attached to a music player, both adorned with Star Trek deltas

StarTrek.com

The music of the Final Frontier is one of the most grounding aspects of the entire Star Trek phenomenon. Rather than sounding overtly futuristic, the musical world Trek has always been the opposite — old-fashioned and classic. When Nicholas Meyer hired James Horner to compose the music for The Wrath of Khan , he asked for a score that was "nautical, but nice." This single phrase perhaps best describes a large swath of famous Star Trek scores; the music is rooted in an antique style, combined with a buoyant sense of optimism. The music of Trek looks forward, partly, by looking back. In real life, Star Trek scores have been played at the commissioning of space shuttles, at least one U.S. Presidential Inauguration , and on March 11, 2024, Jerry Goldsmith's themes from Star Trek: First Contact were played during a ceremony in which Sweden was inducted into NATO.

Sometimes, it seems the classical music of Star Trek is oddly more pervasive in everyday life than Star Trek itself. Yes, there have, of course, been examples of non-classical music in Star Trek ; from Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride," to Enterprise 's "Faith of the Heart," Kirk blasting The Beastie Boys' "Sabotage," and, in 2023, musical theater and pop stylings throughout " Subspace Rhapsody " in Strange New Worlds . But, for almost six decades, classical scores have been the sonic glue binding the Trek universe together. From Original Series composers like Alexander Courage and Sol Kaplan, to Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner in the classic films, to Dennis McCarthy in The Next Generation era, Michael Giacchino 's scores for the Kelvin Universe films, to Jeff Russo in Discovery and Chris Westlake in Lower Decks , Nami Melumad on Strange New Worlds and Prodigy , each Trek score often contains a piece of another. But, perhaps more than any orchestral Star Trek event to date, the soundtrack for Star Trek: Picard Season 3 bridges various eras simultaneously, but also created edgy, new directions for Trek scores that had never been tried before.

The Picard Season 3 score — composed by Stephen Barton and Frederik Wiedmann— is a rosetta stone of nearly all of Star Trek music, ever. Here's your guide to why this 2023 score is so unique, how it's the perfect place to start your Star Trek musical education, and why, if you haven't already, consider spinning this one on vinyl .

"All Good Things…Must Come To An End"

The original Enterprise-D crew (Deanna, Riker, Picard, Beverly, Worf, Geordi, and Data) sit around the poker table while raising a glass in 'The Last Generation'

"The Last Generation"

While it's somewhat obvious that Star Trek: Picard Season 3 is a direct follow-up to Picard Season 2, a huge thrust of the series is also a coda to the era of The Next Generation TV series and four feature films. So, throughout this score, there are various musical references to the hugely famous main theme from Star Trek: The Next Generation composed by Jerry Goldsmith. But, within this musical cue, there's an Easter egg to 1979. As many fans know, the immortal TNG main theme was actually first composed by Goldsmith for the film Star Trek: The Motion Picture . And while the bombastic march opens that film, and every episode of TNG, a slower more ballatic version of the theme was created for the classic track "The Enterprise ," in which Scotty and Kirk view the newly refitted ship for the first time.

Riker looks over his shoulder to the left towards Picard aboard a shuttlecraft in 'The Next Generation'

'The Next Generation'

In Picard Season 3, this dreamy arrangement of the TNG/TMP theme is on full display in the back-to-back tracks "Hello, Beautiful" and "Leaving Spacedock," in which Picard and Riker take a shuttle to the U.S.S. Titan -A, and we hear the gentle strings of "The Enterprise " from 1979. However, as this musical moment continues, and Commander Seven takes the Titan out of spacedock, a new musical theme emerges, which showrunner Terry Matalas has called " The Titan Theme, " since it plays in many instances in the series that focus on the scrappy starship itself. And yet, by the end of Picard Season 3, the Titan becomes a new version of the Enterprise . So, when Riker and Picard roll-up on the Titan and hear the TNG/TMP main theme, it's not just a neat Easter egg, the music becomes a foreshadowing element that helps tell the story.

Deep Cuts Reveal Myriad Star Trek Legacies

Beverly Crusher at the command center of her medical shuttlecraft in 'The Next Generation'

"The Next Generation"

Just as Beverly Crusher sends Picard a transmission as a myriad codec, the Picard Season 3 soundtrack contains a myriad of references to all sorts of other Star Trek music. Some of these cues are somewhat obvious. The end-credits for the series borrows from the First Contact main themes, first introduced in 1996, while Jeff Russo's arrangement of the TNG main theme, crafted for Picard Season 1 and Season 2, still exists as part of the brief title card at the top of each episode. But, once you start digging into the episode-by-episode tracks, deeper cuts start to reveal themselves, ever so slowly.

In "Old Communicator," ominous woodwinds play as Picard riffles through his stuff, to find his TNG-era red uniform. These notes are reminiscent of Ron Jones' music for " The Best of Both Worlds " in The Next Generation , reminding us of that time Jean-Luc lost a uniform just like this when he was assimilated by the Borg. But, for composers Barton and Wiedmann, this is just the first of many musical cues from the past.

On the bridge of the Titan-A, Jack Crusher and Seven of Nine go through the starships housed at the Fleet Museum in 'The Bounty'

"The Bounty"

When the Titan arrives at the Fleet Museum in the sixth episode, " The Bounty ," we get a track called "Legacies," which has rapid-fire sonic Easter eggs like no other piece of Star Trek music before or since.

As Seven and Jack observe the various ships in the museum, each one gets his own theme; for the Defiant , we hear Dennis McCarthy's main theme for Deep Space Nine , for the movie-era Enterprise -A, an arrangement of the Alexander Courage TOS theme, and as Seven waxes nostalgic about the U.S.S. Voyager , a triumphant and bittersweet rendition of the Jerry Goldsmith main title from Star Trek: Voyager plays. Impressively, these musical cues are packed into three minutes and fifteen seconds, meaning "Legacies," tells the story of four starships, through music, in a very short amount of time.

Did we say four ships? Yes! Because in addition to the Defiant, Enterprise -A, and Voyager , the medley of "Legacies" eventually concludes with Leonard Rosenman's 1986 themes from Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home . And that's because Jack realizes that the captured Klingon Bird-of-Prey, which Bones christened the H.M.S. Bounty all those years ago, has a cloaking device that the crew of the Titan can use. And so, this wonderful nod to Rosenman's music not only references The Voyage Home , but also moves the present tense of the story forward.

That Cinematic Feeling

A Musical Legacy: Scoring the Final Season of Star Trek: Picard

On the liner notes to Picard Season 3, Terry Matalas specifies that the score for this season was designed to remind fans of the big, epic music from the films. Even though this was a season of a TV series, the sound of Picard Season 3 is cinematic. "I knew early on that Picard Season 3 needed to sound like the great Trek film scores that came before it," Matalas writes in the liner notes. "[When] I was five…the track 'The Enterprise ' was imprinted onto my brain."

And so, in collaboration with composers Barton and Wiedemann, Matalas steered the music of Picard Season 3 into a massive tribute to the entirety of previous Star Trek film scores. This was accomplished by the sonic Easter eggs we've just pointed out, but this feeling also exists more broadly throughout the entire soundtrack. The dark track "Dominion" isn't one that contains any sonic Easter eggs, but is unique to this soundtrack, as is the heroic hero theme for the Titan , heard in "Leaving Spacedock" and throughout the all ten episodes of the season.

Seven of Nine sits in the captain's chair of the Titan-A, renamed Enterprise-G, in 'The Last Generation'

But, the brilliance of the Picard Season 3 soundtrack isn't that it simply checks-off various Star Trek musical boxes. Instead, it seamlessly blends the old with the new. In "Legacy and the Future," longtime fans will be reminded of Denis McCarthy's tender music from 1994's Star Trek Generations , but as the track builds, we move from the immortal Alexander Courage fanfare, and into the new , future-facing music created for the Titan , which is destined to become Captain Seven's ship, the Enterprise-G , boldly headed into the future.

And so, the Picard Season 3 soundtrack isn't just a series of nostalgia hits. Its music allows us to revisit stories from across the whole timeline of Star Trek , but, also, imagine an unfolding new future, full of wonder, hope, and adventure.

  • On 21 October 2020 , Production Weekly included a third season in its listing of upcoming productions, although no official announcement has been made. [3] [4] It was officially confirmed on 8 September 2021 during the Star Trek Day 2021 celebration.
  • Season 3 was filmed back-to-back with season 2 in order to control costs and accommodate production schedules, [5] and principal photography, aka production, began at the start of September 2021, immediately after production on the second season had wrapped on 29 August. [6]
  • On 3 January 2022 , production on this season was temporarily halted due to a COVID-19 outbreak on set. [7] [8] Production resumed four days later on 7 January 2022 . [9]
  • On 8 March 2022 , production on this season had finished shooting. [10] It was also confirmed that this season will be the final one. [11]
  • On "First Contact Day", 5 April 2022 , it was revealed that the original cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation – LeVar Burton , Michael Dorn , Jonathan Frakes , Gates McFadden , Marina Sirtis , and Brent Spiner – had joined the cast for the third season, as a means of finally giving their characters "a proper send-off". [12]
  • On 2 May 2022 , Alison Pill confirmed that she would not be returning for Season 3. [13]
  • On 5 May 2022 , Evan Evagora and Santiago Cabrera confirmed that they would not be returning for Season 3. [14]
  • On 6 May 2022 , Isa Briones confirmed that she would not be returning for Season 3. [15]
  • The third season being made available on Paramount+ foreign subsidiaries concurrently with Prime Video, making it no longer the exclusive series streamer outside the Americas, might, in the context of the increasingly vicious streaming wars , be construed as a harbinger that the series will be pulled from Prime Video the moment the season release schedule is completed. [16] It was in light of this that CraveTV did loose all its Star Trek content, Picard included with its very recent third season addition, on 1 August 2023, after the Star Trek franchise had revoked its streaming rights in favor of Paramount+ Canada. [17]

Reception [ ]

In 2023 the rating agency Nielsen started recording ratings for original streaming programming, with resulted in that both Picard and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have made the Top-10 (Original Programs) Streaming Chart since then. After season three debuted, Picard has managed to occupy Nielsens original streaming top-ten listing on three separate weekly occasions, with a ninth spot as it highest ranking. during its inaugural streaming run. [18] [19] [20] It must be understood that the Nielsen streaming ratings are not based on (individual) season three (episode) views alone as is commonly, but mistakenly, believed by a substantial part of the US populace, reviewers included, but on those of the show in question in its entirety, thus in this particular case including episodes from the first two seasons as well – an understandable misconception though, as traditional broadcast Nielsen ratings are based on individual television production viewings.

Star Trek: Picard: Season 3 Reviews

It’s a handsomely produced collection of callbacks, inside jokes, and familiar cues. A collection of saccharine nostalgia that says nothing ever changes and nothing ever should.

In the end, this is the final mission for the next generation crew that they deserve.

Full Review | Jun 18, 2024

The second season completely tied up most of its characters and storylines and cleared the stage for current showrunner, Terry Matalas, to finally make the Next Generation sequel that fans had wanted all along.

Full Review | Original Score: 4.5/5 | Jul 25, 2023

While the season provides excellent reunions and nostalgic moments, it also serves as a reminder of the missteps of 90s-era Star Trek that other modern Trek series have moved past. It's a bittersweet goodbye; but a necessary one for Trek to move forward.

Full Review | May 2, 2023

This is reportedly the last season of Picard, and it’s fitting that it goes out on an emotional high and leaves the door open for new adventures.

Full Review | Apr 26, 2023

Not a mere encounter: this is a proper adventure. And a very good one at that: it's exciting and complex, with interesting twists, and while it isn't as daring as we might demand in today's times, it's quite ambitious. [Full review in Spanish]

Full Review | Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 24, 2023

Picard took us on a hell of a ride, but it too definitively asserted that Jean-Luc Picard and his friends were the be-all, end-all of this era of Trek.

Full Review | Apr 24, 2023

After a disastrous second season, ‘Picard’ set a new heading and brought back its legacy characters—and just may have authored the greatest course correction in the history of the small screen.

Full Review | Apr 21, 2023

Star Trek: Picard season 3 just wrote the blueprint on how to do nostalgic fanservice while telling a fantastic story at the same time.

Season three is one of Star Trek’s crowning achievements, the gold standard for how franchises can blend in legacy characters while maintaining vitally present plotlines that don't completely rely on nostalgia.

Full Review | Apr 18, 2023

Nostalgic and satisfying, this is the third and farewell voyage under the auspices of Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), reuniting him with various beloved crew members.

Full Review | Original Score: 8/10 | Apr 5, 2023

It is not like Star Trek: The Next Generation, in the sense that it mimics a conspiracy thriller as opposed to a philosophically driven space odyssey. But it is "Star Trek," and a fitting closer

Full Review | Mar 2, 2023

Whether it’s the clever deployment of fan-favourite characters such as Ro Laren and Tuvok or the OMG moments when he’ll [Terry Matalas] casually throw in the Enterprise-A or Voyager, this season’s been a gift to fans.

Trekkies will be pleased to have the old crew again. There’s an easiness and history felt between these actors and their characters.

I'm pleased to log that it follows the prime directive for a Star Trek show: It's really good.

Full Review | Feb 24, 2023

After two seasons spent avoiding The Next Generation, Picard wholeheartedly embraces it, with appearances coming from Michael Dorn, LeVar Burton, Marina Sirtis and Brent Spiner. It's exhilarating to be reunited with them all.

Weaving together a fantastic culmination of years of storytelling, with a brilliant mix of beloved legacy cast & fantastic new additions, Star Trek: Picard will certainly unite both old and new Trek fans with a gripping final frontier

Full Review | Original Score: 5/5 | Feb 23, 2023

It leans heavily into TNG nostalgia, and that’s okay. Picard will always be my captain.

Full Review | Original Score: 3.5/4 | Feb 22, 2023

All-around kudos to showrunner Matalas... for shepherding this heartfelt finale in a way that’s authentic to the characters, the franchise and the established stories. This season of “Picard” doesn’t feel like fan fiction; it feels legit.

SNEAK PEEK – Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Ep 10 “The Last Generation”

Jack Trestrail

The series finale of Paramount+’s Star Trek: Picard series is here. The third and final season culminates with an episode titled “The Last Generation”. Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Ep 10 has the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew reunited with the USS Enterprise-D one last time. What originally started as a look at Jean-Luc Picard’s (Sir Patrick Stewart) life has become a nostalgic field trip with the original team. Are we excited? Yes! Trek Central has preview images, trailers and more.

Star Trek: Picard’s finale episode will be an hour long. According to Terry Matalas, the showrunner, it’s a “very full hour” of Star Trek . Perhaps we’ll get more cameos from Star Trek legends? We know Tim Russ might return as Captain Tuvok, hopefully, the real one this time. How about other Star Trek legends, though? Who else might help Jean-Luc Picard defeat the Borg once and for all? Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Ep 10 is written and directed by Terry Matalas.

“In a desperate last stand, Jean-Luc Picard and generations of crews both old and new fight together to save the galaxy from the greatest threat they’ve ever faced as the saga of Star Trek: The Next Generation comes to a thrilling, epic conclusion.” Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Ep 10 – Official Episode Synopsis

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Ep 10 – Preview Pictures

For the final time, we have preview pictures for Star Trek: Picard . Sadly, these are not the most groundbreaking in terms of a preview. However, it does make sense. The show’s creatives are careful not to spoil what is coming up in the finale episode. It makes sense, but all Star Trek fans are eager to see something. Regardless, there are some fantastic shots of William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes), Mr Worf (Michael Dorn) and Jean-Luc on the USS Enterprise-D bridge. Only four pictures in total, I am afraid.

We can also see Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) and Mr Data (Brent Spiner) at the front of the bridge, working at their consoles. Doctor Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) seems to have been told to stand next to Worf. Sadly it seems like Crusher has no dedicated station on where to stand. If only the producers had decided to recreate the upgraded Star Trek: Generations bridge. Then there would be an extra set for Crusher. I guess she could sit at the back. Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) assumes her old chair by Picard.

The Ready Room – Preview Clip

Last week’s The Ready Room after show has given us a sneak peek at Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Ep 10 . We’re thrown back into the action as The Next Generation crew commands the USS Enterprise-D. I question why they returned to Earth, given that a fully-fledged Starfleet armada is just waiting there. However, it does appear that the crew did call for help. Mr Data (Brent Spiner) mentions how emergency hails have gone silent. So maybe we won’t see a giant fleet v fleet scene this week?

Recent Star Trek seasons have had a habit of ending seasons with giant fleets coming together. Many fans have pointed out how this season’s final plot seems similar to other Star Trek shows. Specifically, the fleet’s being taken over. For example, Star Trek: Prodigy recently ended its first season with a fleet battle. Star Trek: Discovery also ended its second season with a rogue fleet. Have people been watching Battlestar Galactica on repeat or something? I joke, of course, but you can see it.

The Borg appears to have been hiding in plain sight—the USS Enterprise-D ventures to Jupiter, where a Borg vessel seems to be hiding. You’ve got to wonder how Starfleet did not detect this beforehand. Though perhaps a transwarp conduit has only recently appeared here or something. I’m sure there will be some technobabble explanation that Star Trek will provide like always. Can we also appreciate how cool it looks to have the Enterprise-D coming out of warp once again? Seriously, it’s a fantastic model of the famous ship.

Episode Promo

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Ep 10 marks the end of the Star Trek: Picard series. It’s been a long road, but we’ve finally got there. It’s a bittersweet ending, as the third season finally allowed the show to find its feet. However, I wish it would stop taking jabs at the past two seasons at various points. Regardless of how it goes, this will be a very jam-packed episode. The finale episode of the series has a lot of things to do. It will need to conclude the series, but also the episode and season plot line as well.

Thinking about it, the episode synopsis may hint at some surprise cameos. We know there are some still to come in Star Trek: Picard , it seems. However, who could actually appear? Notice the synopsis says, “crews both old and new”. Could this mean we’re about to get another generation of Star Trek to come to save the day? Seriously, all we need is Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) to show up to help out. She dealt with the Borg well last time.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3  airs on Thursdays via Paramount+ for those in the United States. Additionally, on Crave and the CTV Sci-Fi channel for viewers in Canada. However, new episodes air Fridays via Amazon Prime Video in international regions like the United Kingdom. Paramount+ also streams the episodes in select locations, such as Italy, Germany and France.

Prodigy’s Shocking Ending Connects (Nearly) All of Modern Star Trek Canon

Let’s dig into the memory banks.

The Loom attacks in 'Star Trek: Prodigy.'

The biggest Star Trek binge in franchise history has arrived. Netflix dropped all 20 episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 on July 1 , which led to a shocking and surprisingly open-ended finale. In addition to a time travel plot and a guest character who connects Prodigy to several other eras of Star Trek, the last episode, “Ouroboros Part II,” also syncs up with several major plot points from Star Trek: Picard . In fact, Prodigy’s finale helps make various aspects of Picard more explicable in the tapestry of modern Trek.

Here’s what the final moments of Prodigy mean for the Star Trek timeline, and how the show is set up for a hypothetical Season 3. Spoilers ahead.

Prodigy Season 2’s ending sets up Picard Season 1

The new crew of the USS Prodigy in the finale of 'Star Trek: Prodigy' Season 2

The new crew of yet another new starship.

After defeating the Loom and Asencia, Gwyn, Rok, Dal, Jankom, Zero, Ma’jel, and Murf all find themselves back at Starfleet Academy. Finally, it looks like Star Trek’s Boxcar Children will get their happy ending, but no. It’s First Contact Day 2385, and as everyone in Starfleet celebrates, longtime fans know what’s coming. In Picard Season 1, April 5, 2385, is when Synths go rogue and attack the Utopia Planitia Shipyards on Mars. We saw this from a few different points of view in Picard , but the focus was on how it impacted Jean-Luc Picard. Here we see it from the perspective of the Protostar crew, various young people at Starfleet Academy, and the inner circle of Starfleet Command itself.

This leads to a few interesting and revealing references. Because of the Synth Attack, Admiral Jellico (Ronny Cox) makes it clear that “Starfleet Command has been asked to scale back and cease all exploration and focus on protecting our own planetary citizens.” This means the Romulan Evacuation has been canceled. As established in Picard , Jean-Luc was spearheading the Evacuation and resigned from Starfleet when it shut down. Now we know that the person who told Picard to quit was Jellico. In the Prodigy finale, Jellico says, “I have already informed Admiral Picard. He didn’t take it well, to say the least.”

This revelation is ironic. In The Next Generation's two-parter, “Chain of Command,” it was Jellico who took command of the Enterprise-D while Picard was on a secret mission. While Jellico isn’t technically a bad officer, the fact that he accepted Picard’s resignation in 2385 only adds to how furious Jean-Luc must have been.

Starfleet uniforms, combadges, and more

Raffi (Michelle Hurd) and Picard (Patrick Stewart) in 'Picard' Season 1.

The uniform style seen in Picard Season 1 has been retroactively explained in the Prodigy Season 2 finale.

The impending Romulan Supernova doesn't originate with Picard Season 1 but the first J.J. Abrams reboot movie, where Spock was trying to help the Romulans avert the catastrophe and ultimately traveled back into an alternate timeline. In Prodigy, as Janeway, Jellico, and other Starfleet admirals discuss the future, there’s a mix of different uniform styles on display. Janeway is wearing the 2385-style uniform that Picard and Raffi wore in Picard Season 1’s flashbacks, while other characters wear a style closer to what we’ve seen throughout Prodigy . Jellico even lampshades the conflicting styles in this era, saying, “We don’t even have enough combadges to upgrade half the fleet.” These are small details, but this scene does a lot of work to tie Prodigy, Picard, and the Abrams films together.

The Crusher brothers meet

Jack Crusher and Jean-Luc Picard in 'Picard' Season 3.

Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) and his father, Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), in Picard Season 3.

Before everything goes sideways on Mars, we see Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) visit his mom, Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), on Earth, where Beverly introduces Wesley to his then-new brother, Jack Crusher. There, in 2385, Jack is a toddler, but by 2401, he’ll be in his twenties and become an essential part of Picard Season 3.

“We wanted Wesley to meet Jack,” co-showrunner Kevin Hageman told Inverse before Prodigy Season 2’s launch. “At the time, the [ Picard producers] were curious what we were doing with Wesley.”

Will there be a Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3?

The USS Protostar (and also the USS Prodigy) in 'Star Trek: Prodigy.'

The USS Prodigy has arrived.

The final moments of Prodigy Season 2 reveal that the crew of the destroyed Protostar is being given another ship of the same class dubbed the USS Prodigy . This is notable because while the series is called Prodigy , the Season 2 finale is the first time the word references a starship.

Janeway gives everyone “field commissions,” making them all defacto Starfleet officers, and sends the crew on a mission of exploration despite Starfleet’s concerns. She explains: “As the Federation’s borders are receding, it's of the utmost importance that you are a beacon of light to those beyond our reach.”

There’s also an unexpected switch in commanding officer. Since Season 1, Dal (Brett Gray) has acted as captain, but he willingly hands command over to Gwyn (Ella Purnell). So as Prodigy Season 2 ends, it’s Gwyn who bodly leads the crew to where no one has gone before.

There are currently no concrete plans for Prodigy Season 3. In conversation with Inverse , the Hageman brothers emphasized that there’s “a lot of dreaming,” though it seems possible the Prodigy’s adventures could continue in another iteration of Trek beyond this series. But as of right now, the crew has been given a massive reset button and the chance to adventure across the Final Frontier.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 is streaming on Netflix.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 Ending & Shocking Season 3 Set Up Explained

Star trek is making up for how tng “did wesley crusher wrong,” says executive producer, how old is wesley crusher in his star trek comeback.

WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Prodigy, season 2, episode 15, "Ascension, Part 1"

  • Star Trek: Prodigy has revealed that Zero lost out on a new body due to Star Trek: Picard's Mars Attack.
  • Prodigy season 2 added this heart-wrenching layer to an already catastrophic Star Trek universe tragedy.
  • Zero can still get an android body, but not until the 25th century when the synth ban is lifted.

Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 revealed another tragedy of the Mars Attack from Star Trek: Picard that hinges on one unexpected character. Although Prodigy has mainly taken inspiration from Star Trek: Voyager , season 2 revealed two huge connections to Star Trek: The Next Generation and Picard . One of these connections was the return of Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton), who acted as an advisor for Prodigy 's cast of characters throughout the season. The other was the reveal that season 2 was set around the same time as the Romulan evacuation and subsequent Mars Attack featured in Picard season 1.

Since its introduction, the Mars Attack has become a hugely significant event in the Star Trek timeline , resulting in several universe-altering events including the Federation's ban on synthetic life. Having the tragedy foreshadowed throughout Prodigy season 2 added another layer to the season for audiences who understood what was coming. Several scenes in particular hit harder than they would have under normal circumstances, including one in Prodigy season 2, episode 15, "Ascension, Part 1" featuring the character of Zero (Angus Imrie) .

Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 brings the time travel saga of the USS Protostar full circle. Here's what happened and what it all means for season 3.

Star Trek: Picard’s Mars Attack Is Even More Tragic For Prodigy's Zero

Zero lost out on a new body because of the attack on mars.

Picard 's Mars Attack means that Zero will be unable to get an android body. Zero went through an intense journey during Prodigy season 2, starting when they were gifted a corporeal body from a planet that the crew stopped at on their journey to find Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran) . This was a huge leap forward for Zero, but once they left the planet, the body began to break down. During "Ascension," Zero discussed the possibility of getting a synthetic body with the Doctor (Robert Picardo) and the two made plans to contact the Daystrom Institute to get the ball rolling.

As a Medusan, Zero used a fully technological containment suit to be able to move around, but their corporeal body allowed them to experience sensations for the first time.

However, thanks to the Federation's synthetics ban, Zero's dreams will be short-lived. Prodigy season 2 didn't actually show the enactment of the synth ban, but Picard indicated that it came into effect not long after the Mars Attack. In the post- Prodigy season 2 timeline, the Daystrom Institute's synthetics program will be shut down and all research and development on androids will be suspended . Picard season 1 showed the multiple tragedies that resulted from this, but Prodigy season 2 has added to that tragedy list with the loss of Zero's chance at an android body.

Zero Can Get An Android Body - But Not Until Picard's 25th Century

Zero is going to be waiting a while for a synth body.

Luckily, Zero's dream of getting a new body hasn't been crushed completely; it will just be a long time before they can make that dream a reality. Thanks to Picard season 1, the synthetic ban was lifted around 2400 after Admiral Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the crew of La Sirena managed to prove that the attack had been orchestrated by Romulan infiltration of Starfleet. With the ban out of the way in the 25th century, Zero has every right to request a new synthetic body to replace the containment suit they moved back into during Prodigy season 2.

Zero won't have to wait forever for their dream of becoming corporeal again to be realized, but the fact that it will take so long when they've already had a taste of that freedom is truly heartbreaking.

However, Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 is set during the early 2380s, meaning that Zero will have to wait almost 20 years for the synth ban to be lifted. Of course, Zero will likely be a high-ranking Starfleet officer by the 25th century, meaning that they should have no trouble getting an android body similar to the one Picard received . Zero won't have to wait forever for their dream of becoming corporeal again to be realized, but the fact that it will take so long when they've already had a taste of that freedom is truly heartbreaking.

Star Trek: Prodigy is the first TV series in the Star Trek franchise marketed toward children, and one of the few animated series in the franchise. The story follows a group of young aliens who find a stolen Starfleet ship and use it to escape from the Tars Lamora prison colony where they are all held captive. Working together with the help of a holographic Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), the new crew of the USS Protostar must find their way back to the Alpha Quadrant to warn the Federation of the deadly threat that is pursuing them.

Star Trek: Picard

After starring in Star Trek: The Next Generation for seven seasons and various other Star Trek projects, Patrick Stewart is back as Jean-Luc Picard. Star Trek: Picard focuses on a retired Picard who is living on his family vineyard as he struggles to cope with the death of Data and the destruction of Romulus. But before too long, Picard is pulled back into the action. The series also brings back fan-favorite characters from the Star Trek franchise, such as Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), Worf (Michael Dorn), and William Riker (Jonathan Frakes).

Everyone Forgot Star Trek: Picards Raffi Stalked Admiral Janeway

  • Raffi Muskier's determination led her down a dark path but she was right - the Romulan Zhat Vash orchestrated the Mars attack of 2385.
  • Raffi, once a Starfleet officer, abandoned the organization after being accused of stalking Admiral Janeway.
  • Raffi was proven right in uncovering a Starfleet conspiracy orchestrated by Commodore Oh and the Zhat Vash.

Star Trek: Picard ' s Commander Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd) is one of modern Star Trek 's most interesting characters, but many have forgotten that Raffi once stalked Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). Captain Janeway led the USS Voyager on an unplanned seven-year mission through the unexplored Delta Quadrant, eventually bringing the ship home in one piece. Janeway went on to become one of Starfleet's most celebrated Admirals, and continued to lead missions in Star Trek: Prodigy. Prodigy season 2 ended with the devastating attack on Mars by rogue synths, which was first described in Star Trek: Picard season 1.

Star Trek: Picard season 1 picked up fourteen years after the Mars attack, with Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Raffi still dealing with the ramifications of it. Prior to the attack on Mars, Starfleet had been engaged in a massive project to relocate the Romulan population, as their star was about to go supernova. Admiral Picard led these evacuation efforts, with Lt. Commander Raffi Musiker at his side. When the synths turned on Mars, they killed nearly 100,000 people and destroyed around 20,000 ships. Due to this devastating loss, Starfleet called off the Romulan relocation project, which led Admiral Picard to resign in protest. Raffi struggled in the wake of Picard's resignation, eventually abandoning Starfleet herself.

Star Trek: Picards Mars Attack Was Worse Than We Thought

Star Trek: Picard season 1 was built upon a devastating attack on Mars that changed the Federation, and Star Trek: Prodigy confirms how bad it was.

Why Star Trek: Picards Raffi Stalked Admiral Janeway

Raffi grew paranoid and fell into addiction after admiral picard resigned from starfleet..

Before Lt. Commander Raffi Musiker left Starfleet, she became convinced that the Romulan intelligence agency known as the Tal Shiar was behind the Mars attack. This belief eventually led Raffi to stalk Admiral Janeway, possibly in an attempt to get someone to listen to her theories. Although she initially tried to go through the proper channels, Raffi could offer no evidence to support her beliefs, and Starfleet denied her requests for more resources. From that point forward, Raffi grew paranoid and erratic, as she continued to pursue her theories without authorization.

Raffi disobeyed twenty-seven direct orders and committed thirteen offensives worthy of a court-martial. Musiker developed a substance abuse problem, came to work intoxicated, and hacked into the Starfleet database. The last straw for Starfleet Command, however, was when Raffi began stalking Admiral Janeway. Starfleet then ordered Raffi to undergo therapy and attend a rehabilitation program, but after a year, she chose to leave Starfleet anyway. When Jean-Luc Picard sought Raffi out in Star Trek: Picard season 1, the former Starfleet officer lived alone in a small, isolated house in the vicinity of Vasquez Rocks , and described her life after leaving Starfleet as "one long slide into humiliation."

Raffi Was Right About A Starfleet Conspiracy

Raffi's determination to find the truth led her down a dark path, but in the end, she was right all along..

Ironically, Raffi's seemingly crazy conspiracy theories turned out to be right. The attack on Mars was orchestrated by Commodore Oh AKA General Nedar (Tamlyn Tomita), the Zhat Vash's leader who had infiltrated Starfleet. The Zhat Vash were a secret Romulan cabal of Tal Shiar operatives who existed for thousands of years. The main goal of the Zhat Vash was to eliminate all synthetic life in order to prevent extinction of organic life at the hands of artificial intelligence. Oh climbed high enough within Starfleet to become director of Starfleet Security, which gave her the necessary clearance to orchestrate the Mars attack.

The creation of synthetic life had been banned after the Mars attack, but this ban was lifted when the Zhat Vash was revealed to have been the true perpetrators.

Raffi Musiker accompanied Jean-Luc Picard on his adventures in Star Trek: Picard season 1, which unveiled the full extent of the Zhat Vash's involvement in the Mars attacks. Raffi later returned to Starfleet with the rank of Commander and was assigned to the USS Excelsior. In Star Trek: Picard season 3, Raffi was working with Starfleet Intelligence, where she put her investigative skills to good use. When a Starfleet recruitment center was destroyed on M'Talas Prime, Raffi again became determined to uncover the truth, and she was eventually proven right yet again. In Star Trek: Picard season 3's finale, Raffi joined the USS Enterprise-G as the First Officer to Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), having come a long way since she stalked Admiral Janeway.

The Big Picture

  • Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 delivers great storytelling, and introduces beloved characters from Star Trek: Voyager .
  • In an interview with Robert Picardo, he discusses his return as the Doctor, and the generational impact of Star Trek.
  • A Season 3 has not been greenlit, but Picardo shares his hopes for his character if the series returns.

Star Trek: Prodigy delivered one of the best twenty-episode seasons of Star Trek storytelling with Season 2. Not only did it brilliantly tell the stories of its young cast of characters, like Dal ( Brett Gray ) and Gwyn ( Ella Purnell ), but the series also introduced beloved characters from series, like Star Trek: Voyager , to a brand-new generation of Star Trek fans. Throughout Season 1, Janeway ( Kate Mulgrew ) was a guiding force as a hologram aboard the Protostar , and with Season 2 of Prodigy we got to even more Janeway as the real Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway stepped into focus. With Janeway's search for Chakotay ( Robert Beltran ) becoming a central focus of the season, it's really no surprise that Prodigy 's creators brought back another beloved face from Voyager : the Doctor ( Robert Picardo ).

Following the release of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 on Netflix , I had the opportunity to catch up with the effervescent Robert Picardo to discuss his return to the role after nearly thirty years. In our short, but lively conversation, we discussed the generational impact of a franchise like Star Trek, what it was like reprising the role of the Doctor, his reaction to seeing the animated version of himself on the Voyager again, what evolved and changed in the recording booth, and what he would love to see the Doctor do in a potential Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3. You can read the full transcript of the interview below.

Star Trek: Prodigy

A group of young aliens escape captivity by commandeering a derelict Starfleet ship, the U.S.S. Protostar. As they navigate the galaxy, they must learn to work together and uncover the ship's secrets. The show blends adventure and discovery, appealing to both new viewers and longtime Star Trek fans.

COLLIDER: I have to say Star Trek: Voyager means so much to me. That's the show that I grew up with in the Star Trek Universe, and I love that a whole new generation gets to experience the characters that were so formative in making me who I am today. What is it like to have been part of a franchise that is so generation-spanning the way that Star Trek is?

ROBERT PICARDO: It's always gratifying to meet fans at personal appearances, and people come up to you on the street and all that, who say, “I grew up watching you.” But I love hearing the ones that said “my dad and I,” or “my mother and I.” I'll ask you, for example: did you sit with your whole family or did one of your parents sit and watch with you?

It was my mom and I, and I got to watch Prodigy with my mom, as well, so it felt full circle.

PICARDO: My personal theory is that because Janeway was a female character, the mother and daughter sitting down and watching Star Trek, the curve might be a little higher for Voyager than the other shows. But I don't care what it is. I don't care if it's grandparents and grandchildren. I've literally heard stories of four generations of a single family sitting down together and watching the show, and that really has to make you feel good as a performer.

Because Star Trek really does promote the core principle that exploration and learning about our place in the cosmos is reason enough to extend the human presence in space. We're not out looking for cheaper cellphone battery materials — which is what's happening right now on the moon, which is why we're all worried about China landing on the dark side of the moon, because it's all about space mining and who's gonna get ahead — but the glorious ideals of Star Trek, of just understanding that exploring to understand more and also the other themes of inclusivity and creatures from different alien backgrounds working together in harmony, all of those images are really great for parents and children and grandparents and children, for generations to share, to sit in front of and share.

So, I'm touched by your story of you and your mom. Your mom is obviously a forward-thinker. And that you still enjoy it is also nice, and that you're now a fully-formed adult and that you still enjoy it is great.

I love what Prodigy does. I think it's the perfect concentration of everything that Star Trek is packaged into stories aimed at kids, and adults alike. I think it's great. I'm curious for you, what was it like getting that call and getting to come back to Star Trek and reprise this character?

PICARDO: I've done a fair amount of animation throughout my career, but I have never played a character in animation that I created in live-action. So, it was familiar in some respects doing it, but very different and unique in the fact that I was trying to play a character that I had started playing 30 years ago, this coming August. So, mostly the technical challenge, I thought, was pitching my voice up because as I've gotten older, my voice sits down here, but the Doctor, especially when he was excited about something would really breathlessly ramble. So the pace of his speech, especially when he was on his game and talking about something he’d figured out medically, and having to spew information at that high pace, that was the main challenge, so that I sounded the same age vocally.

When I started to read the scripts that [Kevin] Hageman and their writing team created, it was fun to see that they really use the Doctor well. All of the humorous things about him were carried forward, his self-delight, the fact that he was writing holo-novels, and no one was a bigger fan of his work than he than he was — all of that fun stuff. But also, when the chips are down and there was a crisis, it really was, “How do we solve this young female cadet or would-be cadet that is in dire trouble, and how do we bring her back?” So all of the drama, which of course, is geared to a younger audience, but still, the stakes are high. Even in an animated series, the stakes were serious and important. I love the way they use the Doctor credibly and convincingly in serious scenes, as well.

I didn't know what it would be like. I'm dear friends with Kate Mulgrew, so she told me a little bit about the recording experience, how she was enjoying it, and what it meant. I knew that Kate is a great talent and very serious about protecting the legacy of her character, so if she was happy, I had every expectation that I would be too. So, that was not a surprise.

Robert Picardo Recalls the Recording Process for 'Star Trek: Prodigy'

Something I really like about animation is how things can change. You don't necessarily think that animation is going to be something that evolves like when you're on set or something like that, but a lot can change in the recording booth, and then after they get to the editing bay, they can come back with pickups and change things around. Were there ever any moments with the Doctor that kind of evolved during the process for you?

PICARDO: Yes, we rerecorded some stuff, even some of the pilot, because we were just starting out. We went back and rerecorded some of the pilot, I think to raise the pace of the character. It's very hard when you're recording alone, and you don't hear the other characters. That's the hardest thing. I mean, in an urgent scene, that kind of explains itself. When it's life or death, “We've got to do something right now,” that urgency makes everything happen quickly. But when it's just general introductory conversation, the Doctor first presenting himself to the would-be cadets and all that, I do remember we went back and rerecorded it mostly just for additional pace. During the recording, if I had an idea for a joke and they loved it, there was tremendous freedom, and if they liked it, they recorded it.

The frustrating thing about animation is that you have the inspiration of things happening, you ad-lib something, it all seems like fun, we're laughing in the recording booth after, and then you have to wait two and half years to see it. [Laughs] It's not like in live-action where if you go, “Oh, that was an interesting shooting day, I'm gonna go ask the producer if I can watch the dailies the next day.” No such thing. But the point is that if the excitement is in the room when you record it, it's gonna be on the screen when it's animated.

I definitely feel like that comes through watching it, as well. I know that you don't get to record in the room together, but when you got to see the final product and got to see yourself again next to Janeway on the Voyager , what was that reaction like for you? I know watching those scenes for myself, I cried.

PICARDO: [Laughs] I don't know that I cried. And I must be honest, I haven't watched all 20 yet, but what I've seen, it is emotional. It's emotional to see even the Voyager animated and to hear the underscore. It's such an important part of my life and career. It does two things: first of all, you don't wanna mess with your legacy. You kinda go, “I worked hard. I did a good job. I don't wanna mess that up.” But the other side of that is, “Oh, how cool. That's still part of me.” Even though I'm at a very different stage of life personally and in my career, that is still part of me, and we can create new Star Trek. So, it was really a blast. It was a lot of fun, and I hope the show is successful enough that Netflix will consider a Season 3.

I hope so. I know Season 3 is up in the air, which brings me to my next question. If there is a third season, is there anything that you didn't get to do in Voyager that you would love to be able to maybe get to do as the Doctor in animation?

PICARDO: Wow! Probably have a romance. That's the best thing in the world. At the age I'm at now, it's not gonna play in live-action, but how great would it be? I really loved the little shows in the past, the one in real life where he had a holographic family. There was an episode in the past, I called it our “beauty is only skin-deep” episode — I think it was called “Lifesigns” — where the Doctor fell in love with a hideously deformed Vidiian woman who he was working on and didn't care what she looked like. It's always fun at a certain stage of life to play a character who's acting like he's a 16-year-old on a date, and you can't do that in live-action, but you can certainly do it in voiceover. So, yeah, it would be fun to see a personal episode of the Doctor.

It might be fun to sing a little opera again. I think whatever singing I did was only a couple of phrases. I think I sang a couple of notes, but to have a little opera performance, that would be fun. But other than that, the writers have such great imaginations. They'll think of better things than I can.
