INTERVIEW — The Music of STAR TREK: PICARD with Composers Stephen Barton and Frederick Wiedmann, Plus: Season 3 Soundtrack Release Info!

Connect with trekcore.

One of the highlights of  Star Trek: Picard’s third and final season — aside from the reunion of the  Star Trek: The Next Generation  crew — has been the sweeping, cinematic musical score which has accompanied each episode of this year’s adventure.   Series composer Jeff Russo departed the show after Season 2 — and new composers Stephen Barton and Frederick Wiedmann took charge of musical efforts for the series’ final outing.   We caught up with the pair at the  Star Trek: Picard Season 3 premiere in February, where we discussed their point of view on the show’s new musical identity, nailing the right version of the theme song used in the show’s closing credits, and referencing existing Star Trek themes properly in this new modern context.   Finally, we’ve also got the details of Season 3’s official soundtrack release, coming April 20!

TREKCORE: One of the standout things to me through the first six episodes is the score for the season. It’s got a real classic feeling — compared to the classic films and the older shows. What was your edict, or were you given an edict when you guys came on board for Picard  Season 3?

STEPHEN BARTON: I think I think the biggest thing was — well, the first thing was, when I saw it had pretty much already been shot. I was on set a few times, so I think the biggest edict was a personal edict of “Don’t screw it up.”

Because, you know, when you watch… I’ve been on shows where you watch it and you’re like, “Eh, it’s pretty good.” This one, you watch it. I just sat and I binged and I watched it three or four times, and I’m like, “Oh my goodness me, this is really good.” So I think that was a big one.

But I mean, musically, for me, I think it was a little bit about bringing the sort of naval thing from Wrath of Khan and some of what James Horner brought, as well as obviously, the Jerry Goldsmith theme. But a bit more of that sort of militaristic feeling. Weaving that into it in a way that didn’t feel like it was sort of a time warp but in a way that felt sort of right for now, kind of.

I mean, [showrunner Terry Matalas] and I often talked about, like, what would James Horner do if he were here now? Kind of thing. And I think that was a lot of the approach. Yeah.

FREDERIK WIEDMANN: I think the big challenge was, times have changed slightly since The Next Generation  was on the air. So how do we take this material and bring it into this current aesthetic of filmmaking without it feeling that we’ve pushed it too far into something modern, but still having the nostalgia feel alive and stay in the spirit of what fans want and want to go back to.

Here is the brilliant ⁦ @ComposerBarton ⁩ conducting his Titan theme with all those wonderful nods to Horner in his arrangement. String section only. It’s been stuck in my head for over a year. #StarTrekPicard pic.twitter.com/f5YCKXI6MS — Terry Matalas (@TerryMatalas) March 4, 2023

BARTON: The biggest part of it for me also, is the themes. You have to use and treat them like absolute nuggets of gold. And one of the things you can’t do is plaster them everywhere. You can’t literally use them like the wallpaper on some kid’s bedroom or something.

We want to have that sort of sense of like we’re telling a story and not just sort of going… you don’t want the music to be a commentator the whole time going, “You’re watching Star Trek !” “Did you forget you’re watching Star Trek ?” I mean, we get it. We know. So it’s using them in a very respectful way and then sort of finding ways to develop them.

Because, I mean, that’s the other thing. Every time you look at Jerry Goldsmith’s work, in particular, every movie, he found a new way of putting a spin on it. When we re-recorded certain pieces of music — because there are a few — we would go back and I would look at the movies and they were different speeds in different movies and go back and say, “Okay, well, do we want to be the speed from Nemesis , or do we want to look at this? What are we trying to say with this?”

TREKCORE: Yeah, because certainly, like in the end titles, you use the main theme from Star Trek: First Contact , but then you also use the theatrical film version of the  Next Generation main title theme.

BARTON: The funny thing is where we’ve recorded any of those [with the orchestra] and some of the players had played on those movies, and it was one of those things where they would just sit there — our French horn player is a fabulous French horn player, he’s the principal of the Hollywood Bowl, a guy called Dylan Hart. And you could just see every time he came up on the sheet music in front of him, we looked over at him and he just smiled back and it’s like, “Okay, this is going to be fun.”

star trek picard season 3 lp

TREKCORE: But I also noticed along the way, especially in “The Bounty,” there’s things like that little thread of the STAR TREK IV theme — just a little nugget along the way.

BARTON: Well spotted, firstly!

TREKCORE: Well, it’s one of my favorite films. Was it a challenge to use any of that score that was produced for film in a television production. Was there stuff where we had to fight battles?

WIEDMANN: I don’t think at all, because all of this is so timeless to me, at least. And musically speaking, none of it feels old or dated — so whatever we were given as material to use and incorporate, it felt very natural and organic.

BARTON: From just a standpoint with Paramount, I think it was one of those Paramount-CBS things, they both realized what we were trying to do. It was one of those ones if you show, not tell. And we sort of said, okay, there’s certainly moments specifically in [“The Bounty”] where we come back to five separate themes — and so, it’s like you couldn’t not do that.

I mean, if we didn’t do that, it would seem like a sort of disservice. But I mean, part of doing that was also then to say, how do you present it in a way that honors it and isn’t just like hitting a button exactly like a needle drop? And so I think a lot of what we did was look at the heart of why those tunes worked and what they were saying.

Particularly with Voyager’s tune, I think that was one that every time… we don’t use it much, but when we do use it, we want it to mean something.

star trek picard season 3 lp

TREKCORE: There’s a lot of contemporary needle drops, as you put it, in the first several episodes as well. Were you involved with any of those choices or is that separate from your department?

BARTON: Most of those are courtesy of Drew Nichols, our editor, who is also one of the most phenomenal music editors. He’s someone who’s able to cut those and really choose incredibly well.

Especially source music for Liam Shaw for the dinner sequence and a couple of the other scenes where you really want it to say something — it’s not just background music, but you’re sort of saying something about the character. And he understands that innately. So most of that was in when we got there.

This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.

How Picard Season 3 Finally Broke a Classic Star Trek “Mandate”

The New Next Generation is here.

Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine in 'Star Trek: Picard' Season 3.

It’s hard to believe, but 30 years ago, as The Next Generation began its seventh and final season, there were still vocal Trekkie haters who claimed the show wasn’t really Star Trek. How times change. What was once the “new” Star Trek — a 1987 sequel to a 1960s sci-fi series — is now retro.

In 2023, Picard Season 3 is the second coming of The Next Generation. But, according to the people who made it, this season isn’t just about looking back. The callbacks may be tied to the ‘90s, but for showrunner Terry Matalas, his cast, and crew, this season is all about pushing the franchise into a brave new style of Star Trek storytelling.

Launched in 2020 , Star Trek: Picard sought to tell ruminative down-to-Earth stories about the struggles and further adventures of a much older version of Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). Often called the Star Trek version of Logan , the tone of Picard has always been more earnest and darker than in The Next Generation. Despite its merits — including nuanced writing from Pulitzer-Prize-winning novelist Michael Chabon — aspects of Season 1 rubbed fans the wrong way. And while most hardcore fans loved the new Stargazer in Season 2, there’s debate on whether or not that season stuck the landing.

But now, it seems with Picard , the third time’s the charm. The advance buzz for Season 3 is overwhelmingly positive, with all critics noting there’s a pretty big tonal shift here. But how did it happen?

A new Picard story

Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes and Jeri Ryan in 'Picard' Season 3.

Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, and Jeri Ryan in 'Picard' Season 3.

“This season came to me very fast,” showrunner Terry Matalas tells Inverse . “I knew what all the big moves are and I had to sell it to Patrick [Stewart], to Secret Hideout, and to Paramount+ very quickly.” Matalas joined the Picard creative team after Season 1, and the tonal and aesthetic differences with Season 3 are all the result of his vision. Before joining Picard , and before helming the SyFy reboot of 12 Monkeys , Matalas was a production assistant on Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise . His nerd street cred is clear.

Although series star Patrick Stewart had initially been resistant to bringing back too many TNG characters just for the sake of it, Matalas won him over with the overall pitch for the season. Johnathan Frakes, who returns as Riker, and directs two episodes this season, was there when Matalas outlined his vision to Captain Picard himself.

“Before we started, Terry had lunch with me and Patrick [Stewart], and was very upfront about what he wanted to do,” Frakes says. “He asked if Patrick was cool with it, and Patrick was all in.”

Conflict on the Bridge

LeVar Burton as Geordi La Forge in 'Star Trek: Picard' Season 3

LeVar Burton as Geordi La Forge in Star Trek: Picard Season 3

In Picard Season 3, the stakes are bigger, and the tone is closer to classic Star Trek feature films. “We wanted this season to be something monumental for this crew,” Matalas reveals. “It had to feel big, the same way The Undiscovered Country was for the original crew. The stakes have to be high because this is the last go at it.”

By now, most fans know that all seven cast members from The Next Generation are reunited in this season, along with a few secret surprises from the ‘90s Trek yet to be revealed. But, for the returning cast, there was a big difference between Picard Season 3, and the heyday of The Next Generation . In the ‘90s, the crew of the Enterprise didn’t argue with each other. In Picard Season 3, conflict is everywhere.

“In the original Next Gen the mandate was no conflict among the main bridge crew,” LeVar Burton says. “And that was tricky and unnatural. So, this was delicious to play, it was great fun.”

Because the show is still called Picard , you can easily guess which character Geordi La Forge (Burton) finds himself in conflict with. But he’s not the only one. Jean-Luc’s reunion with Beverly Crusher is also brimming with down-to-Earth conflict. For McFadden, the material in this season was bigger than anything she was ever able to do on TNG .

Gates McFadden as Beverly Crusher in 'Picard' Season 3.

Gates McFadden as Beverly Crusher in Picard Season 3.

“I wish we'd had more scenes like this earlier on,” she says. “It was fantastic because Patrick and I are both theatre actors. So, it’s wonderful to just have a scene where you can really go for it.”

Stewart agrees with McFadden and notes that part of why he even agreed to do Picard at all, was because of the tonal difference of the series. “Some experiences that these characters have had, some are good. Some are not so good,” Stewart reveals reflectively. “And that had a strong effect on me and made it possible for me to sometimes sink a bit low in mood and temperament. I think it’s closer to real life.”

A new Star Trek ship, a new crew

While the final season of Picard creates an exciting story that allows The Next Generation cast to shine in bold new ways, it’s not only about the old gang. Raffi (Michelle Hurd) and Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) — who appeared in the two previous seasons of Picard — return here. And through these characters, the future of Star Trek beyond this moment might be glimpsed. Seven, of course, originated on Star Trek: Voyager , but her arc in Picard has turned her into a much more well-rounded character. And this time out, she’s finally in Starfleet, the first officer on the USS Titan , and constantly sparring with Captain Liam Shaw, played by Todd Stashwick, probably famous to sci-fi fans for his role in the TV version of 12 Monkeys.

Todd Stashwick as Captain Liam Shaw in 'Picard' Season 3.

Todd Stashwick as Captain Liam Shaw.

In the first episode, fans will notice that Shaw and Seven don’t get along. Like, at all . But Stashwick says this isn’t a mistake. It’s by design. “When choosing a first officer, you don't want someone who agrees with you,” he explains. “You want to have a dissenting opinion. You want to have someone who is the things you aren't.”

The Titan bridge is rounded out by several newcomers, too, perhaps most notably, Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut as Sidney La Forge, one of the daughters of Geordi La Forge, who is the helmsman of the new USS Titan . Chestnut tells Inverse she decided to create a consistent way to control the Titan , by repeating certain patterns with her hands. “There’s a method to my madness if you look closely at my hands!” she says with a laugh. Sidney’s journey is also bigger than it might seem. But, detailing too much about her character, or, for that matter, Ed Speleers' new role, might be a spoiler. For now, let’s just say, there are plenty of new Starfleet heroes in Picard Season 3.

The future of 25th-Century Star Trek

Patrick Stewart, Jeri Ryan, and Jonathan Frakes in 'Picard' Season 3.

(Picard) Patrick Stewart, Seven (Jeri Ryan), and Riker (Jonathan Frakes) on the bridge of the USS Titan in the debut episode Picard Season 3, “The Next Generation.”

Whether or not Star Trek: Picard Season 3 leads to a new season of a different Star Trek series remains to be seen. For now, this is the ending of this series and the ending of the story of The Next Generation crew. And the feeling will remind fans of the 1987-2005 era of Star Trek. But, Picard Season 3 is also a contemporary television show, and that means massive twists are coming, and the drama won’t unfold in the style of ‘90s Trek.

“I’m really interested in telling human stories,” Matalas says. “In terms of television, one influence on me is very much Ron Moore’s Battlestar. I like those situations where everybody's right and everybody's wrong. It’s really great dramatic territory.” Matalas explains his views on how to write effective twists and mystery boxes slightly differently than other showrunners in the business: “There is a practice in some writers' rooms that, if the audience can guess what you're doing, don't do it. And I don't subscribe to that. You have to accept the fact that the audience may guess what's going on, but they have to like it, too.”

Matalas is quick to point out he didn’t write the season by himself. He reteamed with two of his 12 Monkeys collaborators, Sean Terretta and Chris Monfette, and sings the praises of the other Picard writers, Cindy Appel, Jane Maggs, and Matt Okumura. “I had a tremendously brilliant writing staff. They worked really hard under difficult time constraints and a lot of pressure. And they shined through it all.”

Will team Matalas continue to tell stories set in the 25th Century era of Star Trek? The showrunner reveals that when one fan told him that this felt like the “beginning of the Terry Matalas era of Star Trek,” at first, he “winced.” At first.

“But, then, after I thought about it, I understood what they meant,” he says. “There is a different kind of tone here that blends a lot of different kinds of storytelling. I just hope people respond to it.”

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 debuts on Paramount+ on February 16, 2023. It will consist of 10 episodes.

  • On 21 October 2020 , Production Weekly included a third season in its listing of upcoming productions, although no official announcement has been made. [3] [4] It was officially confirmed on 8 September 2021 during the Star Trek Day 2021 celebration.
  • Season 3 was filmed back-to-back with season 2 in order to control costs and accommodate production schedules, [5] and principal photography, aka production, began at the start of September 2021, immediately after production on the second season had wrapped on 29 August. [6]

  • On "First Contact Day", 5 April 2022 , it was revealed that the original cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation – LeVar Burton , Michael Dorn , Jonathan Frakes , Gates McFadden , Marina Sirtis , and Brent Spiner – had joined the cast for the third season, as a means of finally giving their characters "a proper send-off". • On 6 May 2022 , Isa Briones confirmed that she would not be returning for Season 3. [15]
  • The third season being made available on Paramount+ foreign subsidiaries concurrently with Prime Video, making it no longer the exclusive series streamer outside the Americas, might, in the context of the increasingly vicious streaming wars , be construed as a harbinger that the series will be pulled from Prime Video the moment the season release schedule is completed. [16] It was in light of this that CraveTV did loose all its Star Trek content, Picard included with its very recent third season addition, on 1 August 2023, after the Star Trek franchise had revoked its streaming rights in favor of Paramount+ Canada. Star Trek: Picard: Season 3 Reviews

star trek picard season 3 lp

In the end, this is the final mission for the next generation crew that they deserve.

Full Review | Jun 18, 2024

The second season completely tied up most of its characters and storylines and cleared the stage for current showrunner, Terry Matalas, to finally make the Next Generation sequel that fans had wanted all along.

Full Review | Original Score: 4.5/5 | Jul 25, 2023

While the season provides excellent reunions and nostalgic moments, it also serves as a reminder of the missteps of 90s-era Star Trek that other modern Trek series have moved past. It's a bittersweet goodbye; but a necessary one for Trek to move forward.

Full Review | May 2, 2023

This is reportedly the last season of Picard, and it’s fitting that it goes out on an emotional high and leaves the door open for new adventures.

Full Review | Apr 26, 2023

Not a mere encounter: this is a proper adventure. And a very good one at that: it's exciting and complex, with interesting twists, and while it isn't as daring as we might demand in today's times, it's quite ambitious. [Full review in Spanish]

Full Review | Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 24, 2023

Picard took us on a hell of a ride, but it too definitively asserted that Jean-Luc Picard and his friends were the be-all, end-all of this era of Trek.

Full Review | Apr 24, 2023

After a disastrous second season, ‘Picard’ set a new heading and brought back its legacy characters—and just may have authored the greatest course correction in the history of the small screen.

Full Review | Apr 21, 2023

Star Trek: Picard season 3 just wrote the blueprint on how to do nostalgic fanservice while telling a fantastic story at the same time.

Season three is one of Star Trek’s crowning achievements, the gold standard for how franchises can blend in legacy characters while maintaining vitally present plotlines that don't completely rely on nostalgia.

Full Review | Apr 18, 2023

Nostalgic and satisfying, this is the third and farewell voyage under the auspices of Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), reuniting him with various beloved crew members.

Full Review | Original Score: 8/10 | Apr 5, 2023

It is not like Star Trek: The Next Generation, in the sense that it mimics a conspiracy thriller as opposed to a philosophically driven space odyssey. But it is "Star Trek," and a fitting closer

Full Review | Mar 2, 2023

Whether it’s the clever deployment of fan-favourite characters such as Ro Laren and Tuvok or the OMG moments when he’ll [Terry Matalas] casually throw in the Enterprise-A or Voyager, this season’s been a gift to fans.

Full Review | Original Score: 5/5 | Mar 1, 2023

Trekkies will be pleased to have the old crew again. There’s an easiness and history felt between these actors and their characters.

Full Review | Original Score: 3.5/5 | Feb 25, 2023

I'm pleased to log that it follows the prime directive for a Star Trek show: It's really good.

Full Review | Feb 24, 2023

After two seasons spent avoiding The Next Generation, Picard wholeheartedly embraces it, with appearances coming from Michael Dorn, LeVar Burton, Marina Sirtis and Brent Spiner. It's exhilarating to be reunited with them all.

Full Review | Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 23, 2023

Weaving together a fantastic culmination of years of storytelling, with a brilliant mix of beloved legacy cast & fantastic new additions, Star Trek: Picard will certainly unite both old and new Trek fans with a gripping final frontier

Full Review | Original Score: 5/5 | Feb 23, 2023

It leans heavily into TNG nostalgia, and that’s okay. Picard will always be my captain.

Full Review | Original Score: 3.5/4 | Feb 22, 2023

All-around kudos to showrunner Matalas... for shepherding this heartfelt finale in a way that’s authentic to the characters, the franchise and the established stories. This season of “Picard” doesn’t feel like fan fiction; it feels legit.

Full Review | Feb 22, 2023

In a final season which feels more like the start of something new, than anything approaching retirement, Star Trek: Picard builds on a rich heritage harking back to Next Generation.

Full Review | Original Score: 4.5 | Feb 19, 2023

It’s wonderful. It’s also officially the end. Trekkies will be overjoyed – and then devastated the fun is over almost as soon as it has begun.

Boldly going where no one has gone before is... fine. But boldly going where we’ve all been before might not be so bad either. That’s the big gamble of Star Trek: Picard season 3, which not only brings Patrick Stewart’s Trek captain back for a final adventure, but pairs him with his original crew from Star Trek: The Next Generation .

The trailer for the nostalgia-heavy season 3, which will arrive next February, debuted during Paramount Plus’ “Star Trek Day” livestream, and gave us new looks at LeVar Burton’s Geordi La Forge, Michael Dorn’s Worf, Gates McFadden’s Dr. Beverly Crusher, and Marina Sirtis’ Deanna Troi. Next Gen and Picard alum Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner also return to the series, alongside Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd. 12 Monkeys creator Terry Matalas steps in as showrunner for the season, which will also be the series’ last.

The trailer for Picard season 3 is vague on plot details, but does reveal the captain and his crew’s new ride: the USS Titan, commanded by Captain William T. Riker, a starship with serious Enterprise vibes. We also see Dr. Crusher holding off some masked foes with a rifle, and a Federation building imploding — things remain not good in the utopian future!

What’s going on and why Picard needs to call his work fam for help will become clear when Star Trek: Picard season 3 premieres on Paramount Plus on Feb. 16, 2023.

Ah… it feels just like old times in a new sneak peek at Star Trek: Picard ‘s final season.

Paramount+ unveiled a new teaser for the upcoming third and final season, along with a premiere date: Season 3 will debut Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023, with new episodes airing weekly. The announcements were made by series star Patrick Stewart himself at the annual “Star Trek Day” celebration on Thursday.

In the teaser, Jean-Luc gets a distress call from his old flame Dr. Beverly Crusher: “We need your help.” We see what looks like Starfleet headquarters crumbling into rubble (!) as Jean-Luc consults with his former right-hand man Will Riker. Jean-Luc doesn’t want to ask his old friends to put themselves in danger (“Since when?” Riker laughs), but his Enterprise crewmates Geordi La Forge, Worf, Crusher and Troi all assemble as Riker tells him: “Wherever you go, we go.”

They get a lift from Seven of Nine aboard the gleaming new starship the U.S.S. Titan — and they all zip off together to tackle their final mission. As first announced back in April , Next Generation alums LeVar Burton (Geordi), Michael Dorn (Worf) and Gates McFadden (Crusher) are joining the cast of Picard ‘s final season, with Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis also returning as Riker and Troi, following their Season 1 appearance.

Press PLAY above for a first look at Picard ‘s final season, and then beam down to the comments to share your first impressions.

I cannot wait for this.

Yes, please.

So they went with a new design on the Titan? I remember they had a design contest with the books for what the Titan would look like. Guess since they’re ignoring the books, might as well ignore that as well.

Lower Decks used the Luna Class Titan Design, so Probably a Titan-A situation. (maybe)

I would hope that’s the case.

I didn’t love the first two seasons, but I am exited for this.

Freakin’ goosebumps!!!

Make it so! YES!

I really hope we get to see them all together rather than one here and one there without any interaction. I know there were Covid protocols in place during filming, so those rules better not ruin it for the fans.

Your heart’s in the right place but boy did that sound entitled.

But what about Elnor and Rafi?

Raffi appears in the trailer at the 40-second mark.

Also, the only way they can really end this show is with Jean-Luc dying. Right?

It’s Sci-Fi, maybe he’ll bee digitally downloaded where no man has gone before…

Well he already died he’s an android now soo…..

Picard died already.

The producers stated months ago that the series is left open enough that if Patrick Stewart wants they can do more seasons.

I am so glad they kept Seven… I feared she was just a short term guest.

If they’re smart, after “Picard” ends in S3, they’ll keep a Modern Trek show going with Jeri Ryan, Michelle Hurd, and possibly others, maybe Some Voyager/DS9 cast show up along the way.

Gdang it…Paramount is gonna make me pay just to watch this! LOL I got chills and I’m so excited!!

Geordi's famously problematic star trek: tng "romance" explained.

Every Starship Enterprise Chief Engineer In Star Trek

Star trek’s 20 best holodeck episodes, why power book iv: force & power book ii: ghost are both ending.

  • Lt. Geordi La Forge struggled with romance on Star Trek: TNG, particularly with Dr. Leah Brahms.
  • In TNG season 3, Geordi enlists holographic Dr. Brahms to free the Enterprise from a booby trap.
  • Geordi's infatuation with holographic Brahms led to a problematic encounter with the real Leah.

On Star Trek: The Next Generation , Lt. Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) had bad luck with romance, and his relationship with Dr. Leah Brahms (Susan Gibney) was particularly problematic. As the Chief Engineer of the USS Enterprise-D, La Forge's first love was the ship and he often struggled to make meaningful connections with actual women. Although TNG focused on the adventures of the Enterprise and her crew, the show regularly checked on the characters' interpersonal lives. Every crew member, from Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) on down, had at least a few romances throughout Star Trek: The Next Generation 's seven seasons.

In Star Trek: The Next Generation season 3, episode 6, "Booby Trap," the Enterprise gets stuck in a centuries-old booby trap and Geordi must figure out a way to break the ship free. Needing to better understand the nuances of the warp engines, La Forge enlists the help of the computer's version of Dr. Leah Brahms, one of the original developers of the Enterprise's warp drive. La Forge moves to the holodeck with a holographic version of Dr. Brahms, and the two eventually find a way to free the Enterprise from the trap. This also revealed Geordi's feelings toward Dr. Brahms, which remain infamous decades later.

A brief history of Star Trek's legendary Starfleet Chief Engineers who have kept the USS Enterprise running for over 200 years from 2155 to 2401.

Who Is Dr. Leah Brahms In Star Trek: TNG & Why Was Geordi Infatuated?

Brahms was portrayed by susan gibney, who later appeared as captain benteen in two episodes of star trek: deep space nine..

After studying at the Daystrom Institute of Technology , Dr. Leah Brahms began working for the Institute, eventually becoming a design engineer. In this position, Brahms oversaw the improvements to the engines of the USS Enterprise-D, and she later became a professor of Theoretical Physics at the Daystrom Institute. Although the real Leah Brahms does not appear in "Booby Trap," the Enterprise computer constructs a hologram based on Brahms' personality profile and various public appearances. While working with the hologram of Brahms, La Forge began to develop feelings for her, despite the fact that he has never met the real Leah Brahms.

Feeling the sting of rejection, La Forge forms a quick connection with Holo-Brahms.

Geordi is obviously impressed by Brahms' engineering knowledge and general intelligence, and the two develop a rapport as they work to save the Enterprise. In the opening scene of "Booby Trap," Geordi strikes out with a woman while on a date, and later discusses his romantic woes with Ten Forward bartender Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) . Feeling the sting of rejection, La Forge forms a quick connection with Holo-Brahms. La Forge rarely encounters people who know as much about the Enterprise's engines as he does, so it makes sense he would fall in love with one of the minds who helped design them.

What Happened When Geordi Meets The Real Brahms in Star Trek: TNG

The real leah brahms visits the uss enterprise-d in tng season 4, episode 16, "galaxy's child.".

In Star Trek: The Next Generation's "Galaxy's Child," Dr. Brahms visits the USS Enterprise-D to inspect the modifications La Forge has made to the engines. Brahms is mostly unimpressed by La Forge's updates to her engine design, and she quickly grows weary of his overly friendly behavior toward her. Geordi feels like he knows Brahms because of his experience with her hologram, but she obviously has no knowledge of that encounter. When La Forge gets a bit too forward, Brahms informs him that she is married, which comes as a shock.

When Leah later learns of Geordi's hologram program from "Booby Trap," she is understandably upset, saying: "I'm outraged by this. I have been invaded. Violated. How dare you use me like this?" La Forge then gets mad at her for the way she has been treating him, accusing her of "badgering" him, which is not a great look for the Enterprise Chief Engineer . In the end, however, La Forge and Brahms put aside their differences to save the Enterprise from a newborn space creature that has been draining energy from the ship.

An illusion of Dr. Brahms appeared in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3, episode 3, "Mining The Mind's Mines," offering to design warp cores with Ensign Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero).

Why Geordi's Most Famous Star Trek: TNG Romance Was So Problematic

"every time you're touching the engine you're touching me. real professional.".

Geordi La Forge's "romance" with Leah Brahms is problematic for a number of reasons. Creating a realistic hologram of a still-living real person is already questionable, but La Forge goes even further by developing feelings for the holographic Leah. As La Forge later discovers, Leah Brahms is a real person with real feelings, so recreating her on the holodeck in this way is not only an invasion of privacy but also just creepy. La Forge was supposed to be working, and he didn't need to create a hologram of Brahms considering he had an entire engineering team at his disposal.

Holo-Brahms delivers the particularly cringe-worthy line: "Every time you look at this engine, you're looking at me. Every time you touch it, it's me," which the real Leah rightfully calls out.

La Forge's holodeck romance is bad enough, but then he behaves terribly toward the real Leah Brahms when she visits the Enterprise. La Forge acts overly friendly toward Brahms and then yells at her when she explains how his holodeck recreation made her feel. Then at the end of "Galaxy's Child," Brahms apologizes for her behavior, even though everything she said and did was perfectly acceptable given the circumstances. Geordi does not come off well at any point in this storyline, regularly behaving out of character.

Star Trek's holodecks entertain, fulfill fantasies, heal old wounds, train cadets, and malfunction badly, as seen in these 20 best episodes.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Fixed Geordi's Problematic TNG Romance

By the time of picard season 3, geordi is married and has two daughters..

Thankfully, by the time of Star Trek: Picard season 3, Commodore Geordi La Forge had become a family man, with two adult daughters. Lt. Sidney La Forge (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut) and Ensign Alandra La Forge (Mica Burton) both followed in their father's footsteps and joined Starfleet, though Sidney became a pilot rather than an engineer. Geordi's family came about in part because of a request from LeVar Burton. In an interview with IndieWire , Burton spoke about La Forge's infamous "romance" with Leah Brahms, saying: "That little stalkerish episode with Dr. Brahms never sat well with me."

Despite La Forge's problematic romance story in TNG , the character never suffered any consequences, as he and Brahms later became friends. A line in the alternate future of TNG's series finale "All Good Things..." even suggests that La Forge and Brahms may have eventually gotten married. Star Trek: Picard made the smart decision to ignore Geordi's relationship with Leah Brahms, and instead focus on his relationship with his daughters. Geordi appears to be a dedicated father and, though we didn't meet his wife, he has clearly moved on from his infatuation with the holographic Leah Brahms from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Not available

Star Trek: The Next Generation is the third installment in the sci-fi franchise and follows the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew members of the USS Enterprise. Set around one hundred years after the original series, Picard and his crew travel through the galaxy in largely self-contained episodes exploring the crew dynamics and their own political discourse. The series also had several overarching plots that would develop over the course of the isolated episodes, with four films released in tandem with the series to further some of these story elements.

Star Trek: Picard

After starring in Star Trek: The Next Generation for seven seasons and various other Star Trek projects, Patrick Stewart is back as Jean-Luc Picard. Star Trek: Picard focuses on a retired Picard who is living on his family vineyard as he struggles to cope with the death of Data and the destruction of Romulus. But before too long, Picard is pulled back into the action. The series also brings back fan-favorite characters from the Star Trek franchise, such as Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), Worf (Michael Dorn), and William Riker (Jonathan Frakes).

Why Star Trek: Picard Teamed The Borg Up With The Changelings

In the "Star Trek: Picard" episode "Võx" (April 13, 2023), Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) used her empathic abilities to reach into the mind of Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) to explain the mysterious, brief psychic spells he periodically and uncontrollably falls under. Jack had revealed that he possessed martial arts skills he never knew he had, can occasionally read people's thoughts, and even invade the brains of others, taking control of their bodies. Nothing is known about Jack's powers, other than he was being murderously pursued by Vadic (Amanda Plummer), a vengeful Changeling who hoped to unlock their secrets.

It seems that years ago, the Federation kidnapped several Changelings, including Vadic, and performed cruel medical experiments on them. Vadic only wants revenge for the Federation's unacknowledged war crimes. Jack has something to do with her plan.

In "Võx," it was revealed that Jack's powers came from, rather unexpectedly, the Borg. It seems that Picard (Patrick Stewart), Jack's father, unwittingly passed a Borg gene (!) into his son's brain, giving him latent Borg superpowers. Jack, upon learning of his Borg genetics, flees distraught to a nearby Borg ship, where Vadic's true mastermind is revealed: a dying Borg Queen (Jane Edwina Seymour, voice of Alice Krige). She reveals the Borg were in cahoots with the Changelings this whole time, and that their plot was ... well, read below for a fuller explanation.

In 2023, "Picard" season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas  took to Reddit to answer questions from fans . During his Q&A, Matalas revealed why he paired up the Changelings with the Borg, stating that he felt the two notorious "Star Trek" antagonists have a lot in common.

Read more: Why Khan Noonien Singh Casts A Shadow Over The Entire Star Trek Universe

The Borg Cut A Deal

Matalas didn't explain how the Changelings and the Borg first came into cahoots, or how they were able to form their partnership, so Trekkies have to take it for granted that the two groups of villains met at some point, compared grievances with the Federation, and hatched a mutually beneficial plot. The Borg revealed to the Changelings that the corpse of Admiral Picard was being held at a Federation black site, locked up in a vault. Picard's consciousness was shunted into an android body at the end of "Picard" season 1, so his dead organic body was fair game for storage.

The Borg also revealed that a deadly brain ailment embedded in Picard's gray matter was actually the aforementioned Borg gene, only mistaken for a disease. It was left behind from when the Borg assimilated Picard several decades before. The Changelings stole Picard's dead body, extracted the gene, and then infiltrated dozens of Federation ships. Using many, many Federation transporters, the Changelings were able to implant the Borg gene into the brains of anyone who beamed anywhere. A wrinkle: the implanting only worked on anyone under the age of 25, as they were more susceptible to brain gene manipulation.

Once infected with the Borg gene, the Borg Queen could "activate" the Federation's youth, assimilating them all at once, and forcing them to attack their commanders. The Changelings and the Borg would get to see the Federation fall.

The team-up is odd from the outside, but Matalas felt it was organic, writing:

"The Changelings/Founders and The Borg have a lot in common. They both have had Starfleet attempt to wipe them out with weaponized viruses. 'DS9' and 'Voyager.' They both are kind of like a Hive. It seemed like the perfect Team-up."

Perfect? Hm...

The Common History Of The Founders And The Borg

The weaponized virus Matalas referred to is a morphogenic virus implanted in the Changelings during the seventh season of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." The changelings were said to be the founders of the Dominion, a powerful, warlike empire from the Gamma Quadrant of the galaxy, hence Matalas' reference to them as Founders.

The Borg virus was a neurolytic pathogen that Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) deliberately infected herself with. She then allowed herself to be assimilated by the Borg, spreading the disease through their cybernetic network. This was the plot of the final episode of "Star Trek: Voyager," titled "Endgame" (May 23, 2001).

Matalas was well-versed in "Star Trek" to recognize the similar plights suffered by both the Borg and the Founders and decide that they should team up. He clarified that Vadic had been talking to the Borg Queen for the entire season; when Vadic retired to her quarters, she severed her own hand and watched it grow into a weird, goopy face that she could communicate with. This was, Matalas clarified, the face of the Borg Queen, somehow able to used Vadic's own body as a communication device:

"The Gelatinous Head was the Borg Queen speaking to Vadic via a long-range communications device. If you look at the face and the Queen, they are the same."

It seems out of character for the Borg to outsource their villainy; they have historically been more like cyborg zombies, marching relentlessly forward, sharing a group mind and only thinking of assimilating others. Some Trekkies wondered how a deal might have been struck.

Did the dying Borg Queen meet Vadic at a coffee shop to brainstorm plans? Perhaps not, but that's an amusing visual.
