Star trek beyond's costume design.

The key for all of these guys was to make each one unique and special. Sanja had various silhouettes picked out and we tried several before getting here. 

The Survival Jacket appears fairly complex, but it's actually very highly complex. Not only were we sourcing over seven different fabrics used for this jacket ranging from a cotton duck to polyester to china silk, but we had fabric that was screen printed as well as a specialty vinyl for the pipping. The original jacket also utilized mixed media elements including rubber, plastic, and metal. We feel our attention to detail for this piece was extremely high and the fit is perfect. Even though this ornate costume stands in contrasts to the typically understated look of Starfleet's uniforms, fans will see after the movie that it fits within the context of the story.

This just makes me more disappointed with the movie than I was before. Don't get me wrong, it's a solid action movie, but it had some really great art design, but was so fast-paced I don't feel like I was really ever able to get a good look at any one thing.

I'd take fast action over a The Motion Picture style lingering on everything for all of time approach! Some design, a lot of design, isn't meant to be seen, fully, it's just part of the texture of the film. I'm sure in your life you walk past bits of amazing design all day long without noticing. And sure it's nice when you do notice things and really appreciate how they were made, but they are worthwhile existing if they do the job even if they are just seen from the corner of your eye, be that in a movie or reality. Look at another aspect of the film, movie soundtracks aren't really there to be enjoyed as their own thing, they are part of the overall movie, helping to tell the story. Yet you can also enjoy them separately, and take in every nuance of them too. I see the production design much like that.

I can see where you're coming from, but personally I find the pacing of Beyond... well, wearying. It's a good action movie, don't get me wrong (if Simon Pegg can do anything, it's make a good action movie) but IMHO even action movies should never be mostly action. You need calm moments for the juxtaposition. In the totality of Beyond there are only what, two or three scenes in the entire movie (amounting to no more than two or three minutes) where the characters actually have time to talk calmly to each other. That's ridiculous. Bringing up TMP as the only alternative is silly and hyperbolic. The Motion Picture and Star Trek Beyond are both decent movies that err with their pacing to either extremes: the one being too slow, the other too fast. The examples to look at are First Contact, The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country... all of which had fantastic action scenes that still only took up a relatively small faction of the runtime in each film. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, when a film's pacing is too fast to allow for establishing shots, there's a serious problem.

You might trying watching the film with your pre-conceptions about it being an action film turned off Fox. Because there are probably more quite moments of characters talking in Beyond than either of the previous films. Most of the scenes on Altamid were characters walking about talking to each other. Plus there were the earlier scenes with Kirk being depressed on the Enterprise. And later in the film even the actiony Kirk vs Krall fight was chatty at times. And establishing shots were one of the visual signatures of the film, there were quite a few really wide spacey establishing shots throughout.

Geek Chic: Fashion Inspired by Jaylah from Star Trek Beyond

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise, the newest installment,  Star Trek Beyond, had an outdoor IMAX world premiere a few weeks ago at San Diego Comic-Con . My best friend Jacqueline (she’s the one who got me into Star Trek) and I didn’t get tickets to the premiere, although we watched the pre-movie fireworks show from our distant hotel room and then tried to lip-read the first five minutes of the film. We were unsuccessful.

We did catch an actual showing last week and I’m so glad we did! For long-time Trek fans, this film feels the most true to “Star Trek” out of the three reboot movies; for casual fans, it’s just a ton of fun! (Although there are a couple scenes that made me weep.)

Know Your Geek: About Star Trek Beyond

• Star Trek Beyond is directed by Justin Lin and written by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung (who also plays Sulu’s husband in the movie!)
• The movie stars John Cho , Simon Pegg , Chris Pine , Zachary Quinto , Zoe Saldana , Karl Urban , and  Anton Yelchin . It also introduces Idris Elba as Krall and Sofia Boutella as Jaylah.
• In Star Trek Beyond, the crew of the USS Enterprise is well into its five year mission. For adventure-loving Captain Kirk, things are getting stale. But be careful what you wish for…
• The Enterprise faces a terrifying new enemy, Krall, who is determined to prove that unity is what weakens humanity. (Basically, the exact opposite of the ideals of the Federation.)
• Along the way, we meet newcomer Jaylah, an alien who teams up with the crew to fight Krall. She’s a savvy engineer and skilled fighter who also has great taste in music.

Outfits Inspired by Jaylah:

While I was a big fan of Michael Kaplan’s costume design for the last two movies, I also really liked that Star Trek Beyond costume designer Sanja Hays dressed the crew in uniforms that felt more reminiscent of those from the original series.  Since I’ve already done several Star Trek posts , though, I decided to focus on the newest and most visually striking character, Jaylah .

Minor spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen the movie yet!

Welcome To My House

Jaylah is handy with a staff and lives in the wreckage of an old Federation starship, which she refers to as her “house.” While she’s initially distrustful of the Starfleet strangers, she quickly brokers an alliance.

Like her, Jaylah’s outfit is tough (but also really cool!). Snag her utilitarian layered look for yourself by sticking to a monochromatic palette. A black top, vest, and boots heighten the contrast of the pale gray jeans, while a leather cuff and studded backpack toughen up the ensemble. Finally, a pair of bar-shaped earrings allude to Jaylah’s weapon of choice.

The Beats and Shouting

To undergo her transformation into Jaylah, Sofia Boutella had to sit in the makeup chair for 5 hours each day. It’ll take much less time than that to put on an ensemble inspired by the geometric design of Jaylah’s makeup.

Start with a graphic black-and-white dress, then add a pair of heels and a sleek tuxedo blazer. Accessorize with a metallic clutch and gleaming earrings reminiscent of Jaylah’s eyes. Finally, try out a two-tone cat-eye with this black and white set. Perfect for a night spent dancing to your favorite music (aka the beats and the shouting!).

Will I Have To Wear the Shirt?

At the end of the movie, we get to see the whole crew, along with Jaylah, in civilian clothing. I couldn’t find a good photo of the scene, but Jaylah’s outfit was on point.

I’ve put together a similar look: it’s essentially a softer, toned-down version of her battle gear in a pale neutral palette. It’s also a great fall outfit! Slip on a taupe waterfall jacket over a heathered tank and white jeans. Wedge ankle boots and a studded messenger bag add an edge to the outfit, while Starfleet earrings allude to Jaylah’s future.

ANOVOS' Beyond Survival Jacket

Fancy the cool Survival Jackets you saw in Star Trek Beyond ? Well, ANOVOS soon will offer their high-end version of it, with the product created using reference and measurements taken from the original screen-used Beyond production assets. The identical style fabrics have been custom dyed to match the distinctive quilted panels seen in the Beyond garment. The jacket’s abrasion panels feature a rubberized texture pattern and the Starfleet arrowhead insignia badge and hardware are replicated in cast rubber and finished in silver.

The jacket will be priced at $575.00 USD, and will come in sizes Small through 2XL. ANOVOS will offer flexible payment plan options.

Jose Salcedo, CEO of ANOVOS; Maegen Hensley, Director of Soft Goods Productions; and Steve Fronzcek and John Cooley, of the ANOVOS Product Design Team, recently talked to StarTrek.com in detail about the Survival Jacket. Here's what they had to say:

ANOVOS has offered jackets in the past, including the Captain Picard "Darmok" jacket, the "Archer" jacket from Star Trek: Enterprise , and uniform pieces from Deep Space Nine and Voyager . How did production of the Star Trek Beyond Survival Jacket compare to these previous releases?

Jose Salcedo: Each jacket has its own level of complexity and this one was no different. Our Picard Jacket was about how to create a garment using screen used elements while still being functional in the real world. The Archer Jacket was all about where to implement creative elements from the Star Trek Universe in a real functional jacket. The Star Trek Beyond Survival Jacket is about venturing into a style of garment that we had never encountered -- coupled with new materials. The complexity found in the survival jacket was further compounded in having to combine hard parts with exotic fabrics. The end result is nothing short of amazing. We were able take what we learned from our previous Star Trek jackets to engineer a way to make this Beyond costume a real world garment, while maintaining a high level of quality and accuracy to the original. I really think people are going to like this jacket for not only the way it looks, but its also surprisingly comfortable to wear.

The Survival Jacket appears fairly complex, with multiple textures, layers and details that contrast the streamlined look of most Starfleet uniforms. What challenges did you face while recreating this unique costume piece?

Maegen Hensley: You are right. The Survival Jacket appears fairly complex, but it's actually very highly complex. Not only were we sourcing over seven different fabrics used for this jacket ranging from a cotton duck to polyester to china silk, but we had fabric that was screen printed as well as a specialty vinyl for the pipping. The original jacket also utilized mixed media elements including rubber, plastic, and metal. We feel our attention to detail for this piece was extremely high and the fit is perfect. Even though this ornate costume stands in contrasts to the typically understated look of Starfleet's uniforms, fans will see after the movie that it fits within the context of the story. The greatest feature of the Survival Jacket though is its diversity. It can be worn as a everyday jacket, not just a costume piece.

The design of the Survival Jacket makes it appears to be quite functional. Are there any special features that ANOVOS has included?

Steve Fronzcek and John Cooley: If the Survival Jacket appears functional it is because it's design cleverly ties directly to its purpose in the story. It's designed to be something a Starfleet member would wear in a dangerous situation and so it's meant to comfortably protect the wearer in a multitude of environments. It can be worn by itself -- but as we see in the film when it's worn with the pants, boots and environmental equipment belt, it can provide warmth or cooling as needed, in addition to a few other systems that were implied by Star Trek Beyond 's costume designer, Sanja Hays. The design of the jacket is so well thought out and executed that there was little else that we could add to the design, except --  this jacket wasn't going to have the benefit of being worn with the ensemble's equipment belt and, knowing that one needs a place to stow their communicator or mobile phone, we added a pocket to the interior of the jacket. That's all the help this coat needed from us. This is easily our favorite costume from Star Trek Beyond and we can't wait to see it worn right here on Earth.

Beyond Paradise confirmed for season 3 and special episode

Humphrey and Martha's story isn't over.

The BBC announced the exciting news about the Death in Paradise spin-off following its hugely emotional season finale on Friday (April 26).

"The response to series two has been fantastic. So much love goes into the making of the show, and we’re delighted that the audience have enjoyed it so much," said executive producer Tim Key.

"We can’t wait to get back to Shipton Abbott for another Christmas special and series to continue the story and learn more about our characters and the town they live in – I can promise that we’ll be making the viewers laugh, cry, laugh a bit more and then baffling them with a series of ingenious puzzles. There will also be a duck.”

The second season of Beyond Paradise has continued to be a ratings winner for BBC One, with its opening episode attracting an impressive 7.5 million viewers thus far.

Friday's finale provided some resolution about the future of Shipton Abbott's station house following CS Charlie Wood's internal investigation, as well as an emotional decision for Martha and Humphrey about their future together.

The finale episode included Hollyoaks legend Jeff Rawle in a guest role as curator of the Shipton Abbott Museum, while Doctor Who 's Peter Davison recurred throughout the second season .

Global Screen , the Munich-based international sales outfit, has boarded worldwide sales on “The Trek,” the upcoming first feature from leading South African cinematographer and director Meekaaeel Adam . The film is a horror-Western, in which starvation, suspicion and madness plague a family as they cross the Kalahari Desert under the eyes of primeval spirits.

“The Trek” is set in 1846, when a Dutch-Afrikaans family and their British travel companion set off on a challenging journey through the Kalahari Desert. Along the way, they meet Atshumao, a stoic man of the Khoen people, one of Southern Africa’s original indigenous, nomadic population groups.

The film stars an established South African cast which includes Morné Visser (“The Kissing Booth 1,2,3”), well-known comedian Rob van Vuuren (Netflix series “Ludik,” “Slumber Party Massacre,” “Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom,” “The Mauritanian”), Trix Vivier (“Trackers,” “Legacy”), Maurice Carpede (“The Kingdom”), Camilla Borghesani (“Roxy”) and newcomer Leah Lindeque.

Durban-born Adam, whose background includes commercials, music videos and documentaries, has quickly emerged as one of South Africa’s leading young talents since moving into feature films. His first feature as DOP, Apartheid political thriller “The Last Victims” (2019) was recognized with over 20 awards at international festivals including a best cinematography nod at the RapidLion Film Festival, also known as the South African International Film Festival. Adam also recently directed and served as cinematographer for one episode of “Stories of a Generation – With Pope Francis,” the Netflix docu-series that features Martin Scorsese.

Global Screen’s Martin Schneider describes “The Trek” as the kind of special elevated genre cocktail today’s buyers are always on the hunt for: “The film is an innovative blend of historical thriller, survival horror and supernatural elements that draws on authentic Southern African lore and history as well as its unique Kalahari Desert setting. The story also incorporates the complex themes at the forefront of today’s cultural conversations, especially the dark legacy of racism and colonialism.

“Meekaaeel has established himself over the last years as one of South Africa’s best DOP’s and now one of the country’s most exciting up-and-coming directors. His story-centric approach to shooting and commitment to visual storytelling make him the perfect fit for this special genre project. In terms of Meekaaeel’s precision and the visceral nature of his filmmaking, we are reminded of movies like ‘Bone Tomahawk’ by S. Craig Zahler and directors who craft gripping, multilayered genre films with substance as well as scares, like Karyn Kusama or Jeremy Saulnier, also a DOP turned director.”

Adam commented: “The key conflict that the film explores is the oldest one of them all: the struggle over land. Our family of settlers, whose arrival tips the natural balance, are put on a brutal collision course with forces that are bound to protect the land at any cost. Both sides in this conflict stand to lose everything and there’s a feeling of inevitability as each step on their journey strips them of more of their humanity. I think this speaks to the loss of innocence that the colonial project brought about and the importance of looking back so as not to let history repeat itself. A partner like Global Screen – who understands the weight of this story – is indispensable in allowing ‘The Trek’ to be seen by genre and film lovers far beyond South Africa.”

Faithful to South Africa’s multilingual history, the film is majority English language, but also features dialogue in Afrikaans and Khoekhoengowab, a now endangered language that makes heavy use of click consonants.

“The Trek” was written by James C. Williamson, J. Hannah Massyn and Sandulela Asanda. Williamson’s 2020 festival hit “Fried Barry” played Sitges, Fantasia and L’Étrange Film Festival and found distribution in over 70 countries, including deals with Shudder and ShowMax.

“The Trek” will also feature original music from Haezer, one of South Africa’s top electronic musicians.

“The Trek” is currently in post-production and expected to launch at a major film festival in the second half of 2024. The film is produced by Williamson for The Department of Special Projects and Warren Gray for Resistance Pictures in co-production with Alto Media (South Africa), Resistance Pictures (Cape Town), and Sternenberg Films (Germany). It is supported by South Africa’s Department of Trade and Industry and National Film and Video Foundation.

“The Trek” reflects a growing focus on genre content for Global Screen, part of the Telepool Group, best known for its expertise with animation, family entertainment and prestige drama. Global Screen’s foray into elevated genre includes the Sandra Hüller led nightmare-thriller “Sleep,” a debut feature by Michael Venus in which the Oscar- and BAFTA-nominated Hüller plays a woman plagued by horrific dreams, which become a never-ending nightmare haunting an entire village community.

Recent genre titles handled also include “You’re Not Me” (Tú No Eres Yo) by Goya-nominated producers Marisa Crespo and Moisés Romera, a Spanish-language satirical thriller, which launched at Fantastic Fest in Austin, before having its international premiere at Imagine Film Festival Amsterdam.

The Force is with Fortnite yet again thanks to the epic new Star Wars event kicking off on Friday 3rd May.

It's a massive crossover event, filled with new and returning character skins, weapons, and much, much more.

This time around, Star Wars is getting all up in LEGO Fortnite, Rocket Racing and Fortnite Festival, too! Check out the LEGO Fortnite Star Wars cinematic trailer to see what it's all about:

That the Star Wars event is so massive in 2024 shouldn't come as a massive surprise to anyone — especially when you consider that Disney recently made a big investment in Epic .

Here's everything you need to know about the new Fortnite Star Wars event release date, launch time in the UK, what skins are included, and more.

When is the fortnite star wars event 2024 date and start time revealed.

The new Fortnite Star Wars event release date is Friday 3rd May 2024 , Disney and Epic games have confirmed.

This means that the 2024 Fortnite Star Wars event will be will under way in time for May the 4th (be with you), a celebrated day in the Lucasfilm franchise's fandom.

It has been confirmed that the Fortnite Star Wars event start time in the UK will be 2pm on 3rd May 2024 , after you have downloaded the v29.40 update.

Expect to be downloading that update for a while, as there's a lot of new Star Wars-themed content in it among other fixes and whatnot.

This will give players something fresh to enjoy while they wait for the next Fortnite season .

What are the new Fortnite Star Wars skins?

The 2024 Fortnite Star Wars event includes a bunch of new skins, not least Dagobah Luke , Lando Calrissian , and Chewbacca !

Here is the full list of confirmed Star Wars skins included in the crossover event and how to get them (thanks, official Fortnite website !):

Returning Star Wars outfits in Fortnite (all can be bought from the in-game shop):

• Leia Organa
• Sith Trooper
• Zorii Bliss

What's more, a few Star Wars outfits (and loads of other non-Star Wars skins) are getting LEGO variants. The Star Wars ones getting LEGO looks are Darth Vader , Krrsantan and Mandalorian .

Finally, the Beskar Car Body is being added to the game, along with the Beskar Bundle which includes a bunch of different colour wheels and decals, too. This new car can be used across all Fortnite modes and even in Rocket League.

What else is in the Fortnite Star Wars event?

It's not just new and returning skins in the Fortnite Star Wars event this year. There's something going on across all modes in the game, with new features and items aplenty in Battle Royale and LEGO Fortnite, especially.

Fortnite Star Wars event: What's happening in Battle Royale?

Chewbacca and his Bowcaster are on the island . You'll find Chewie at a specific Imperial Roadblock (he's at a different one each match) and it's up to you to rescue him.

Once you have saved the legendary Wookiee, he will give you his Wookiee Bowcaster as a weapon to use! You'll also be able to find them within Imperial Chests at Imperial Roadblocks.

Two more iconic weapons are in Battle Royale, too: Darth Vader's Lightsaber and E-11 Blasters . You'll find Vader's Lightsaber equipped to the big bad himself inside the Lambda Shuttle. Defeat him to earn his Lightsaber.

The E-11 Blasters are held by the Stormtroopers and can be looted from Imperial Chests at Vader's landing sites.

Finally, a list of Star Wars Quests will be available to complete during the event up until it ends on 14th May at 2pm here in the UK (9am ET for those in the USA). Complete ten of these quests to unlock the AWR Pack Back Bling .

What's new in the LEGO Fortnite Star Wars event?

In one of the largest updates to LEGO Fortnite yet, the Star Wars crossover means big business thanks to the introduction of the buildable Rebel Village location, LEGO Pass: Rebel Adventure , and many new items.

The v29.40 update is bringing with it a whole new Star Wars-themed island that will stick around in LEGO Fortnite indefinitely.

On this island, a pair of Macrobinoculars will show you to the Rebel Village. It's your job to help build it up to become the new Rebel Headquarters. You level it up by completing objectives and constructing new Rebel buildings.

You'll use Lightsabers, the Bowcaster, DL-44 Blasters, E-11 Blasters and the Thermal Detonator to take down opponents – craft them all apart from the Lightsaber at the new Rebel Workbench with Plastoid and Durasteel.

To unlock your Lightsaber, you need to help the Rebels build up their Village.

Finally, we have the separate LEGO Pass: Rebel Adventure . This has a free and premium track. Purchase the premium track for 1,400 V-Bucks and you'll unlock the Chewbacca skin instantly (both LEGO and regular Fortnite versions).

All of its rewards aren't exclusive to the pass, and they might be available to purchase from the in-game shop at some other time.

Complete the Pass's Quests to earn Studs. The more Studs you earn, the more you unlock from the Pass.

The LEGO Pass: Rebel Adventure will be available to purchase and complete up until 23rd July 2024 at 1pm UK time (8am ET in the USA) .

Fortnite Festival Star Wars event

The Mos Eisley Cantina setting is coming to the Fortnite Festival Jam Stage on 3rd May.

Complete seven Fortnite Festival Star Wars Quests and you'll unlock the Seven-string Hallikset Guitar .

All of the above will all be available in Fortnite Festival until 14th May at 2pm here in the UK (9am ET in the USA).

You can also purchase and play through the new Jam Track, Cantina Band (you're already humming along). You'll also be able to buy the Endorian Drum Kit and Nalargon Keytar, too.

Rocket Racing Star Wars event

The Star Wars event in Rocket Racing brings with it two separate sets of Quests.

Complete seven Star Wars Quests in Rocket Racing to unlock a Battle Pass Level Up and 14 to unlock the Energy Binders Trail.

Complete four May the Fourth Quests to unlock Anakin's Podracer Decal and complete eight to unlock the Darth Maul Decal .

Both sets of Rocket Racing Star Wars Quests will be available to complete until 21st May at 2am in the UK . For those in the USA, they'll be available to complete until 9pm ET on 20th May .
