Despite Seattle’s history with Ride the Ducks, tour company plans new fleet of tourist vehicles that go on land, water

John Malouf knows that Seattle may not be keen on the idea of someone launching another fleet of amphibious vehicles on its waters and roadways.

It was just six years ago that a Ride the Ducks of Seattle vehicle loaded with tourists broke an axle and crashed into a bus filled with international students, killing five people and injuring 60. Millions were paid out to victims and their families , resulting in the tour company closing and filing for bankruptcy in April of last year.

“I know your history well,” Malouf said of the crash, and the legal journey that followed.

Still, Malouf thinks this is a prime spot to launch his Seattle Splash Tours , an “amphibious adventure” scheduled to open this summer, offering 90-minute rides on land and water in Hydra-Terra vehicles built for tourism by Cool Amphibious Manufacturers International.

“This is a completely different amphibian, built for tours,” said Malouf, who has been running Alaska Amphibious Tours in Ketchikan, Alaska, for the last 20 years.

“It really comes down to safety.”

Unlike the Ducks vehicles — some of which were built in the 1940s and ’50s for use in the military, and maintained for decades — Seattle Splash Tours will use newer vehicles made with modern parts. The oldest vehicle in his fleet is 20 years old, he said, and the aluminum hull is filled with Coast Guard-approved buoyancy foam, “which is a huge advantage.”

“You can’t sink ‘em,” he said. “They are positively buoyant.”

His vehicles have “proven performance” in 16 countries, and he called them “the safest amphibious vehicles for tourism.”

His tour company has had one death in its history: In 2004, a pedestrian walked in front of a vehicle and was killed . Investigators found the company was not at fault.

Malouf has received a two-month permit from Seattle’s Department of Parks and Recreation to launch the vehicles at the Sunnyside Avenue North boat ramp, where the Ducks used to launch, and where he hopes good times will begin again.

“We feel there is a bit of a vacuum there,” Malouf said of Seattle, a city he got to know well as a harvest diver. “There is a good market there. Seattle is a great tourist destination, and it has taken a hit in the last couple of years.

“It could use a little splash and fun.”

Where the Ducks tours had a more comedic tone — “Captains” at the wheel with funny names and crazy hats, punning and playing loud music — the Splash tours will be more informative, but still a good time, he said.

“We like to have fun,” Malouf said. “I think Ride the Ducks had huge local sponsorship, and after the accident, they had a hard time getting through that.

“We’re going to stand on our own,” he continued. “We’re a different company and do things the way we like to do it. And safety is our priority, coming in.”

In February 2019, after a four-month civil trial, a King County jury awarded the victims of the crash $123 million. The jury determined that Ride the Ducks International — the Branson, Missouri-based manufacturer of the Duck amphibious vehicle — bore 67% to 70% of the responsibility for the crash; and that Ride the Ducks of Seattle was 30% to 33% at fault. Awards to each of the 40 plaintiffs ranged from $40,000 to $25 million.

After the crash, the state Utilities and Transportation Commission, which regulates commercial charter buses and tourist vehicles statewide, suspended the local company from operating its 20 tourist vehicles and also found that Ducks Seattle had 463 safety violations.

Last year, four U.S. senators introduced the Duck Boat Safety Enhancement Act, after a 2018 duck boat accident in which 17 people were killed on Table Rock Lake in Branson, Missouri.

The bill passed the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation and is expected to be considered by the full Senate this year.

If passed, the law would reinforce National Transportation Safety Board recommendations, requiring the use of life jackets and equipping all operating duck boats to be more buoyant in case of emergency flooding. The law would also require the logging of safety actions; annual safety training for crew members; and the consideration of safety recommendations in previous incident reports.

Ride the Ducks left Seattle for good last July, when the 19 remaining vehicles were put up for auction , and sold for between $5,000 and $45,000; the higher bid was for a vehicle painted with the University of Washington colors and logo.

“They exceeded the best expectations we had,” said Colin Murphy, of the James G. Murphy Company, which handled the weeklong auction. “And we didn’t have a clue what they would go for, because they aren’t really for sale on the open market.”

The vehicles were sold to mostly private owners, from Mount Vernon in Skagit County to New York, Maine and Florida.

“They landed everywhere,” Murphy said, adding the Ducks portable ticket office sold for $4,500.

Malouf has no set start date for selling tickets. But he expects a little pushback, considering what has happened here, and in other parts of the country where amphibious vehicles were involved in accidents.

“Of course, there is going to be resistance,” he said. “There are always going to be haters. But you just keep a smile on and keep on trucking.”

And floating. That, too.

Seattle Sightseeing Tour Itinerary

  • Chevron down 1. Downtown Area

The city tour begins in Seattle’s bustling downtown core, highlighting the Pike Place Market, Seattle Art Museum, Shopping District, and the world’s first Starbucks.

  • Chevron down 2. Pioneer Square & Stadium District

Seattle’s original downtown is now a 35-square-block historic district filled with turn-of-the-century Romanesque architecture, art galleries, and trendy restaurants, all of which border the sports stadiums for the Seahawks, Sounders, and Mariners.

  • Chevron down 3. International District & Waterfront

Home to Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Cambodian, and Hmong communities, this neighborhood continues to play a role in Seattle’s multicultural identity. Seattle’s waterfront includes the aquarium, Ferris wheel, classic seafood restaurants, funky souvenir shops, historic piers, and ferry and water taxi terminals.

  • Chevron down 4. Seattle Center & Queen Anne View Point

The Seattle Center is a 72-acre urban park and is the site of the 1962 World’s Fair. It’s the home of the Space Needle, Paul Allen’s Experience Music Project, Dale Chihuly’s Garden and Glass exhibition, and the Pacific Science Center.

Kerry Park on Queen Anne Hill provides a dramatic panoramic photo opportunity of Seattle’s skyline. You also view the spectacular architecture and aesthetic in one of the city’s more exclusive, old-money neighborhoods.

  • Chevron down 5. Ballard Locks & Fremont Neighborhood

Opened in 1917, the lock system and ship canal connects the fresh water of lakes Union and Washington with the salt water of the Pacific in Puget Sound. It’s a popular destination for watching boats navigating between the two waterways. It also features a fish ladder for observing the seasonal migration of salmon.

Fremont neighborhood, famous for its outdoor art and nude bicyclists in the Summer Solstice parade, is also a microcosm of the challenges Seattle faces as it grapples with growth. This once-quirky bohemian artist colony is now transforming into a high-tech powerhouse with offices for Google, Tableau, and Adobe while remaining true to its artsy roots.

Jack in the Box's first new burger in 8 years sold out so fast you can't find it anywhere right now

  • Jack in the Box quietly rolled out the Smashed Jack burger in early January.
  • The chain's first new burger in eight years was expected to be available for six weeks.
  • It sold out in two weeks. The chain plans to bring it back for a national rollout next month.

Insider Today

Jack in the Box wants the Smashed Jack to be the "best burger" in the fast-food industry.

It's off to a great start.

Two weeks after launching, the Smashed Jack has become a fast-food unicorn. It's nearly impossible to find as the chain ran out of supplies to make the specialized burger, which customers couldn't get enough of.

"We're sold out," Ryan Ostrom, Jack in the Box's chief marketing officer, told reporters at a media event Wednesday at the chain's San Diego headquarters.

The fast-food chain, a self-billed edgy rival to McDonald's , quietly rolled out the Smashed Jack in early January.

"No marketing, no advertising, we just put it on the menus," Ostrom said.

But word still got out, leading to hordes of fans scrambling to get their hands on the $8 premium burger. Ostrom said the chain sold nearly 70,000 burgers in a single day. One store received a single order for 27 Smashed Jacks.

Ostrom said the original plan was to quietly launch the burger for about six weeks to get restaurant teams prepared for a national launch in the spring. But the Smashed Jack was so popular that, after two weeks, supplies ran out, and the chain couldn't get enough patties out to stores.

"We couldn't keep it in stock, we couldn't keep it on the shelves," Ostrom said. "We unfortunately failed on this soft launch, which we did not think was going to happen."

The Smashed Jack, which took two years to develop, features a hefty, ¼-pound smashed-style beef patty that's made in a manufacturing facility and then shipped to the chain's 2,200 US restaurants. It also comes with two slices of cheese, a new Thousand Island-inspired "Boss" sauce, pickles, and loads of grilled onions — all stuffed between a brioche bun.

The loose-grind 100% seasoned beef patty is different from other burgers on the menu.

"It's actually the biggest patty we have," Ostrom said, adding that it was also "juicier" than other patties on the menu.

The chain is ramping up production of the smashed-style patties and said it was "working quickly to ensure a smooth and successful wide launch that will meet the unprecedented demand" for the burger when it officially rolls out in late February. A bacon double Smashed Jack , a burger with two patties and bacon, is also set to be available.

"We're just making sure we have enough in store. Will we? We don't know yet," Ostrom said this week. "It depends on the passion for this burger. We're predicting strong results from it. We hope our stores can stay in stock. They might not. And if it happens again, then we'll have to figure out another plan and make more."

The popularity of the burger is reminiscent of the 2019 debut of Popeyes' fried-chicken sandwich . It launched in August of that year and immediately sold out as the chain ran out of inventory to make the sandwich.

The sandwich is now a staple on the Popeyes menu and ignited a never-ending chicken-sandwich war with rivals such as Chick-fil-A and McDonald's.

Jack in the Box is hoping for the same kind of buzz with the Smashed Jack.

The chain said the burger scored big in a recent blind taste test it conducted that put the Smashed Jack up against burgers from McDonald's, Wendy's , and Burger King .

Ostrom said consumers chose the Smashed Jack as the best burger. He's not shy about his aspirations for the burger, which come as McDonald's is revamping its burgers .

He said Jack in the Box wanted its burger to be the best in the quick-service restaurant industry. "I get excited when we go after the competition."

Justin Timberlake is going out on tour for the first time in five years in 2024 and he’s making Seattle one of his first stops.

The musician and actor announced the news of The Forget Tomorrow World Tour on Thursday night’s episode of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on NBC, the same day he released his new single, “Selfish” and a video for the song. Additional information about the dates and locations are available on Timberlake’s website, justintimberlake.com .

The tour, which has 22 dates, will begin Monday, April 27 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia. Timberlake will make Seattle his second stop on the tour and play at Climate Pledge Arena on Thursday, May 2. From there, he’ll move south and play in San Jose, California, Las Vegas, San Diego and Los Angeles later in May. He’ll also perform in Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, Boston and New York City’s Madison Square Garden before concluding Tuesday, July 9 in Lexington, Kentucky.

Justin Timberlake ticket information

As USA TODAY explains , premium members of Justin Timberlake’s fan club, called Tennessee Kids or TN Kids , can experience the tour with exclusive fan deals, if they’re willing to pay the yearly fee to enjoy those perks. Tour tickets will be made available to premium fan club members through Ticketmaster and they will have access to these tickets Monday, before the general public.

Live Nation notes that since Citi is the official credit card of Timberlake’s tour, cardmembers will have access to presale tickets for U.S. dates beginning Tuesday at 10 a.m. (local time) until Thursday at 5 p.m. through the Citi Entertainment program .

Verizon also will offer customers presale access for the tour through Verizon Up , Live Nation says. Customers will have access to presale tickets for U.S. dates beginning Tuesday at 10 a.m. until Thursday at 5 p.m.

Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Friday at 10 a.m. and you can visit justintimberlake.com or go right to the Ticketmaster website . The page for the Seattle show, specifically, can be accessed here .

Justin Timberlake’s upcoming new album

The tour announcement and release of “Selfish” combines with Timberlake revealing news of the release of his sixth solo album, “Everything I Thought It Was.” The album, due out March 15, is Timberlake’s first new music since 2018’s “Man of the Woods.”

Timberlake made the announcement about the upcoming album while performing a free one-night-only concert at the Orpheum in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, on Jan. 19, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal . The show was about 90 minutes and featured his 11-piece “Tennessee Kids” backup band  “in an unusually intimate and meaningful setting,” the Memphis outlet explained in its coverage. About 1,500 people were in attendance.

Timberlake performed “Selfish” during an appearance on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” over the weekend. He served as the episode’s musical guest and appeared in the monologue and one of the sketches with Fallon and host Dakota Johnson.
