A COMPLETE GUIDE TO NAOUSSA, PAROS – THE COOL, COSMPOLITAN CENTRE OF THE CYCLADES

10 days in Greece

Naoussa is a lively fishing village at the north of the island of Paros, a perennial favourite with visitors, especially in Summer.

Naoussa is the 2nd biggest town on the island and is slightly more upmarket, and more expensive than Parikia. It has many excellent bars and tavernas around the main square at the port and lovely shops and boutiques, as well as a winery.

People say Naoussa reminds them of Mykonos 20 years ago but we think it’s even better. The Old Harbour means it is geographically blessed, there are good beaches, a vibrant nightlife and there is a lot to do. Many people find they really have no need to leave the town at all!

When to visit Paros

July and August are peak season and Greeks themselves have holidays in August and head to the islands along with many other Europeans.

Outside of these months, visiting in the autumn or in springtime means lower prices for accommodation and mild weather.

The Meltemi wind can pick up between August and October, but it isn’t so bad that it will ruin your vacation. If it’s a windy day in the Cyclades we head to a protected beach, usually south facing. Every island has them!

Best beach and swimming weather: June to September

Best sightseeing weather: March to June and September/October

Where is Naoussa, Paros?

Naoussa is the 2nd largest town on the island of Paros in the Cyclades group of islands.

It is located in the north of the island, about 15 minutes from the Port and 25 minutes from the airport.

naoussa greece tourist attractions

How to get to Naoussa

There is a fairly new domestic airport on Paros and flying is an easy 30-minute flight from Athens. Otherwise, the ferry is popular and fun.

Flying from Athens to Paros

This is a popular route serviced by   Olympic Airlines / Aegean,  and   Sky Express.

If you book early enough flights can often be cheaper than the Ferries and it is certainly quicker. The airport is quite new but small and there are only two gates so plan your visit carefully.

Flying to Paros from other destinations

At this point, the airport runway is not big enough to take large planes, although plans have been approved for this to be extended.

If you want to fly to Paros from another island or destination you have to connect via Athens or Thessaloniki. Sometimes in Summer smaller charter flights have arrived from places like Geneva but they are infrequent.

Ferry Athens to Paros

You can travel by ferry to Paros from mainland Greece through the ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrion in Athens. The main port of Paros is Parikia which is located on the western side of the island.

The ferry route from Piraeus to Paros runs regularly with 2 ferries a day in the low season and up to 5 in Summer. The ferry trip from Athens to Paros takes between 3 and 7 hrs depending on what ferry you book.

You can book online at   Ferryhopper   or you can buy a ticket in Athens at either the port or one of the many ticketing agents you will see around the city.

If you are traveling in July, August or during one of the many religious festivals or public holidays it pays to book ahead .

Ferry to Paros from Santorini and other islands

Paros is well connected to most of the other islands in the Cyclades group. Mykonos , Naxos , Syros , Ios and Serifos all have regular direct services and they, in turn, connect to other islands such as Santorini , Milos , Folegandros and Sifnos .

You can even connect with the Dodacannese Islands like Rhodes via Syros or Santorini and Crete via Naxos or Milos.

Again, check the Ferryhopper box below for schedules and prices.

Once you have arrived on the island, at either the Port or the Airport you have 4 options to get to Naoussa.

Either catch a Taxi or Bus, hire a car – all covered in detail below, or ask your hotel to arrange a private transfer to pick you up ( this is our preferred option especially if its your first time. Sometimes the Hotels can be hard to find!).

 Getting around Paros

There is a good bus service on Paros that services the entire circumference of the island and many of the interior villages. Be sure to  check timetables  first.

There are a few Taxis on the island but they can be hard to get in Summer. They can usually be found at the Port for ferry arrivals but it can pay to book in advance by phone if you need one.

Car and Scooter rental

Hiring a car is highly recommended on Paros so you can discover for yourself the many things the island has to offer or even pop over to neighbouring Antiparos next door.

Many Hire cars are manual and it is best to get a small one as parking can be very tight in many places! Most places will deliver to your hotel in Naoussa and many have offices at the Port and/or can meet you at the airport.

We use and recommended Discover Cars  for car hire.

There are a number of water taxis that take people out to some of the beaches. In Naoussa you can catch the boat from the harbour over to Kolimbithres/Paros Park and Lageri Beaches, several times an hour in summer.

Naoussa hotels and houses

It’s important in Naoussa to choose your location carefully.

The Old Town is car-free and the big public carpark in the centre of the town is no longer operating, so if your hotel is not within walking distance you will likely experience parking issues.

If you stay TOO central and near the bars and clubs you may find things are very noisy, especially late at night.

We love to stay at Paliomylos Spa Hotel . It’s a stylish, cycladic hotel with exceptional service as hundreds of our readers can also attest to. Chrys is a Greek Australian who truly understands what being in the hospitality industry is all about. The hotel is high on the hill back from the centre of town which means it is very quiet, and there are great views over the district and Piperi Beach as well as good parking, something that many hotels in Naoussa struggle with.

If Paliomylos is booked out or not open ( it opens May-October) then Hotel Senia is close by and a perennial favourite and also have 2 bedrooms suites and apartments. Papadakis is also very good.

If you are happy to splurge and are looking for an adults-only experience then Lilly Residence and Parian Boutique Hotel are both stunning while great cheap and cheerful options include Irini Rooms and Hotel Iris both of which have rooms with balconies and sweeping views.

If you are after a fully self-contained house that can sleep at least 6 people then you can rent both a one-bedroom and two-bedroom house at   Villa Helena   right near Piperi Beach. Its a quiet spot yet only a 5 minute walk into town and Kristos will look after your every need.

Other family/group friendly places with two and three bedroom apartments include Zoumis Studios and Vammos Luxury Apartments , both in excellent, central locations.

For a bit of a splurge check out   White Cliff   which oozes Cycladic-chic and even has an outdoor jacuzzi, with great views and super stylish interiors.

 Naoussa dining & Nightlife

You can bascially divide the dining precincts of Naoussa into 4 groups. Keep in mind many of the these are open between April and October.

1. The Old Harbour .

This is the most popular dining destination and certainly the most photographed.

It is the heartbeat of the village and where you will find hundreds of tables lined around the harbour belonging to excellent tavernas such as Mario, Sigi Ikthios and Tsachpines.

Some of the best bars in the town are also here and as people move to them after dinner the harbour becomes somewhat of a laid back nightclub until the wee hours of the morning.

Our favourite bar is Agosta while Linardo and Methystra are very Insta-famous!

2. The New Harbour .

Adjacent to the Old Harbour to the west is where you will find the Marina. Along the harbourfront are a string of restaurants and some are very good such as Archipelagos and Bluefish.

The ones to the left of the harbour are fairly quiet as there is no through traffic, cars or pedestrians, whereas the ones to the right, near the entries to the Old Harbour usually have waiters hawking for business outside and are very touristic.

3. The Back Beach .

On the other side of the Old Harbour to the east is a pebbly beach. Not really suited to swimming but lined with more tavernas and bars and a place a lot of first timers often miss. Along here you will find some excellent seafood tavernas such as Statheros and Taverna Glafkos as well as Come Back and Fotis All Day Bar s.

4. The alleys and back streets .

In amongst the winding alleys you will also find numerous culinary delight and some of the best wining and dining on the island. We love to dine at Soso , Yemeni Wine Restaurant , Safran and Open Garden , which, as its name implies has a lovely garden setting.

The Meat Bar is great for carnivores and Kafeneion is very popular for good reason.

Sante Cocktail Bar is one of the prettiest bars in the village and set around a large weeping willow in a small square in the centre of the maze. Kosmos , Ohia and Trickster Bar are all close together, just behind Come Back , which creates a mini outdoor nightclub feel late at night.

We think the best Souvlakia is at Souvlakia Kargas which is where we seem to have a quick lunch at least once every visit while Sousouro and Cafe Carino are excellent coffee shops. Heading back over the bridge to the west Kiranos Cafe is also great and Ragoussis Bakery is a must do!

Don’t forget to get some Loukamades (greek donuts) at To Paradosiako , which make some of the best in Greece. We often buy these to eat on the walk home. Highly addictive!

Live Music in Naoussa

In Summer a number of tavernas will have guys on the Bazouki playing live music at night. Locations and times may change depending on the season and the year.

For something very authentic, laid back and often with a full band and dancing head to To Takimi which is right at the back of the main dining area and is a great night out. This is where serious musicians gather on Sundays to play and many locals, including enthusiatic you people, come to dance, which often spills out on to the street. This is a real treat!

Things to do in Naoussa

Naoussa beaches, kolymbithres.

The beach at Kolymbithres is one of the most famous in Paros. It is located west of Naoussa in Plastira Bay and is surrounded by huge boulders of granite that have been worn away over the centuries into smooth platforms used by tourists to sunbake and relax.

The water here is shallow and crystal clear and there is a great Taverna right next to the beach called  Anemons which does great home-cooked food.

To get to Kolymbithres you can drive and park along a number of sandy tracks or catch the small ferry over from Naoussa.

It is made up of a monastery, a museum, an open-air theatre, a number of walking/hiking routes and a couple of lovely beaches.

One of those beaches is Monastiri which now has a very good modern taverna and beds and umbrellas for hire.

The cove here is protected from the wind and the water is very calm making it an excellent spot for families with young children in particular. Make a day of it and explore the whole park. There is ample parking on-site and entrance is free.

The main beach of Naoussa, Piperi is located at the southern end of the town and is about 200 metres from the main fishing port.

It is a wide sandy beach which is surrounded by a number of excellent hotels and villas such as Paliomylos Hotel , Adonis and Sea House that looks over the bay towards Paros Park or over the town towards the Harbour.

There are a few umbrellas but no beachfront tavernas. It can get choppy when the Meltemi wind blows in which case you are better off heading over to Monastiri ( above) or the beaches in the South of the island.

Located to the West of Piperi Beach is Piperaki a tiny version of its big brother with rocky platforms for swimming. A good option if it’s very hot and you dont have the time nor the energy to get to the better beaches.

Agio Anargyroi

This is a nice beach on the eastern side of the town which has a wide, shallow beach that is popular with families in summer.

There are a number of tavernas on the waterfront and umbrellas and sunbeds for hire. The only drawback here is that it is very exposed on windy days when it is best to head to Lageri, Kolymbithres and Monstiri.

Good hotels that are right next to this beach are Kalypso and Roussos Beach Hotel.

Lageri is the most eastern beach in the Naoussa harbour and you get there by either car or water taxi. It is very sheltered so a popular choice in summer, especially if it is windy. The water is calm and very clear but it is unorganised and it is popular with naturists so not very family friendly.

Historical sites

Naoussa venetian castle.

One of the main landmarks of Naoussa and likely to appear in almost every photograph is the old Venetian Castle in the Harbour.

Built in the early 14th century by the Venetian Duke of Naxos the castle was a fortress that protected the town from hostile invaders. You reach it simply by walking along the sea wall that protects the Old Harbour and you can walk right into the round bastion where cannons were once positioned in the gun holes. Much of the Castle is now underwater and it is in disrepair but is rarely crowded and affords some of the best views of the harbour. Go early in the morning.

Old Port of Naoussa

This is the heartbeat of the town and the central point of all activity. In fact, it would be safe to say that the Old Harbour has become the trademark of Naoussa.

Still a working harbour lined with fishing boats the harbour is now fringed with tavernas, bars and cafes and is the social focal point of the island in Summer and on important holidays.

It’s a lively and colourful spot and one of the prettiest fishing harbours in all of Europe.

Faneromeni Church

Agios Faneromeni Church towers over the town and is a striking landmark from a distance.

This is the parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and it was built in the Byzantine Era. It is very beautiful inside and worth a few minutes to see. If there is a religious event then this is where you will find all the townfolk and the bells tolling in the bell towers.

Monastery of St. John of Deti

This small, isolated monastery has a history dating back to the 16th century. Original called Agios Ioannis ( John) the monastery was abandoned during Ottoman rule and restored in the 1960’s by a Dutch artist.

Today it is popular with hikers and photographers.

Officially called the Environmental and Cultural Park of Paros, Paros Park is located at the far eastern end of the harbour and is accessible by car or water taxi. There is plenty of parking.

Covering over 800 acres on the peninsula the park consists of the Monastery ( see above), a nice, calm beach with a great taverna and sunbeds, extensive hiking paths, a Museum and an amphitheatre that hosts the Annual Summer Festival each year. Events during the Festival include Opera, theatre, a Triathlon and other musical performances.

Shopping in Naoussa

Woven through the maze of narrow alleys and cobblestone back streets are a myriad of shops, boutiques, galleries and food outlets.

The quality of retail is generally very good, actually some of the best in the Greek Islands. Small artisans stores selling stunning handmade jewellery, crafts and artwork can be found next to cheap and cheerful boutiques and souvenir shops as well as high-end fashion stores.

You’ll also find optometrists, tobacconists, shoe shops, beauty salons and some excellent homewares stores too.

Be sure to check out Sendouki and Lotus for homewares and gifts, Eclectia, Alkimini’s, White in Paros, Letos, Knots and Gorgo for fashion and accessories and Greg and Alenia Jewellery.

Other things to do in Naoussa or nearby

Aegean tennis centre.

Located just 6 minutes drive out of Naoussa is the Aegean Tennis Centre where you can play Tennis and Padel Tennis. Courts can be hired by the hour and you can take lessons as well.

Moraitis Winery

On the outskirts of town just behind the main Church is a small but very good winery. Moraitis grow their grapes just outside Naoussa on their 10-hectare vineyard but the winery in Naoussa serves as their cellar door and cafe. Here you can do some wine tasting ( and purchasing!) as well as learn about the history of the winery, the types of grapes grown and the winemaking process ( the Cyclades are quite unique in this regard). You can also enjoy a light meal and grazing plates in their very charming cafe.

Kokou Horse Riding Centre

Horse riding enthusiasts will love doing a tour with the Canadian founders of Kokou, who have licensed guides to take you on a morning swimming tour or an evening coastline tour with their 25 lovely horses. What a great way to see some of the less visited parts of Naoussa’s surrounds and get some fanstastic photos too.

Taos’s Centre

If you are looking for wellness and relaxation on your vacation then Tao’s is your place. They offer Yoga, Meditation, Pilates, Dance, Massage and more and even have long stay and group hosting programs. Located just outside Naoussa in a tranquil, rural setting.

Sailing & Boats

One of the very best activities you can do when visiting the Greek Islands is spending time on the water and a sailing trip is guaranteed to be a highlight of your trip. We highly recommend this cruise that goes over to the neighbouring islands of Antiparos and Despotika or this excellent cruise to fascinating  Iraklia and stopping at beautiful Schinoussa on the way.

Or hire your own boa t! Explore the many bays, beaches and coves and caves around Naoussa under your own steam. A great day out for the whole family.

Right next to the pedestrian bridge on the harbour you will also find Pantasoulas Daily Cruise who do trips around the island and sometimes further afield of weather is permitting.

If you want to learn how to sail the Cyclades is the place to do it! The Naoussa Sailing Team have a fleet of training dinghies and qualified instructors to show you how to master this great water sport.

Spa Treatments

Indulge yourself with a lovely facial, massage or other spa treatments at one of the excellent salon’s in the town. We love the small Spa at Paliomylos Spa Hotel with its personalised service and indoor spa pool. You can also find great treatments at Faena Beauty Salon, Exymno Anatripsis and Vivians Nail Boutique.

Important holidays and festivals on Paros

If you are lucky enough to be visiting Paros during an important religious holiday or festival then you are in for a treat.

The Parians love to celebrate and are infamous for their partying ways especially on Easter Sunday when it is not uncommon for fireworks to go off and people to dance on the roofs of the buildings lining the old harbour.

**TIP: Be warned however that it is important to have your accommodation and ferry tickets prebooked for these days as they often completely sell out.

January 6th – Epiphany: This is when the young men of the island gather at the ports and dive into the chilly Aegean sea to get the Cross (Stavro).

Mid January – Carnival : A huge feast marks the start of the costume parties held at the cafés and bars across the island and ends with events hosted by island associations, the largest of which are the ones in Naoussa, Parikia and Marpissa.

January/February ( 6 Mondays before Palm Sunday) – Clean Monday: A public holiday across Greece this is when sinful attitudes and non-fasting foods are left behind and Lent begins.

25th March – Independence Day. This is celebrated with great fanfare all over Greece and recognize the events that liberated the country in 1821. The celebratory Doxologia mass takes place at Ekatontapiliani, while students participate in parades at all villages on Paros including Naoussa. It is a very important public holiday.

March or April – Easter.  Easter in Greece takes place at different times each year depending on the   Julian calendar . Generally, the date for Easter is set on the first full moon after both the Spring Equinox and Passover, which usually occurs around the middle to the end of March. This means every year   Orthodox Easter   takes place between one and four weeks after Catholic (Western) Easter.

Celebrations for Easter is an entire week called Holy Week and starts with processions and much candle lighting on Good Friday.

On Saturday the Ceremony of the Resurrection takes place in churches all over the country and the bells are rung for extended times. This is the pinnacle of Greek Easter and fireworks go off after a very important Midnight Mass.

Easter Sunday is the biggest religious holiday of the year. After Church, there is a huge feast where fasting is broken. In Naoussa there is a huge party around the fishing harbour with people dancing on rooftops until dawn.

23rd June – Kleidonas festival, which is marked by fires, music, dance, traditional delicacies and good wine with the lighting of the bonfire and the burning of the Mayday wreaths. Young people also make a show of jumping over the fires which is said to ward away evil spirits.

2nd July -the Fish and Wine Festival

17th July – Revival of the Bagpipes

23rd August – The Festival of the Pirates marks the anniversary of the pirate raid on Naoussa, led by Barbarossa in 1537.

NAOUSSA, PAROS – THE COMPLETE TRAVEL GUIDE

Welcome to Naoussa, the charming little village on the northern coast of Paros , Greece. With its beautiful Cycladic architecture, colorful harbor, and narrow alleys adorned with white houses and vibrant pink bougainvilleas, Naoussa truly oozes that amazing Greek island charm! It’s pretty as a picture during the day, but it is when the sun starts to set that this place really comes alive with loads of energy, pulling in a multitude of visitors who come to explore some of the island’s best restaurants. So, what are the must-do things in Naoussa? From wandering around its charming streets to indulging in delicious local food and, of course, hitting the beach, there are plenty of things you can’t miss when you come to town. And don’t you worry, I’ve got you covered with a complete travel guide that includes all the best hotels and restaurants in and around Naoussa, plus some other handy info to help you plan the perfect trip!

BEST THINGS TO DO IN NAOUSSA, PAROS

1. explore the naoussa port and village.

Step into the beautiful streets of Naoussa, and immerse yourself in its lively atmosphere. With white-washed houses, cobbled stone streets, and blue dome churches, Naoussa effortlessly captures the essence of a Greek paradise.

Stroll along the picturesque port and check out the freshly caught octopus drying in the sun. Continue on to the Venetian castle from where you will have a beautiful view of the village, revealing the tapestry of white-washed houses, cascading bougainvillea, and azure waters stretching towards the horizon. Finally, walk up to the beautiful Faneromeni (Panagía) Church with its stunning Orthodox architecture and decor. Sitting on top of a small hill. it is also an excellent viewpoint over the town, in particular at sunset.

Best things to do in Naoussa Paros

Once a quaint fishing village, Naoussa has blossomed into a vibrant town filled with upscale bars, delicious restaurants, and shops featuring everything from local souvenirs to high-end Greek fashion brands. If you are into shopping you can easily spend the full day here, otherwise a couple of hours would do to explore all the beautiful corners of Naoussa.

Naoussa Paros harbor

For a quiet experience, wake up early and explore Naoussa in the morning, ideally before 10 am. Before everyone awakens, the town is draped in a peaceful ambiance, allowing you to capture its essence without the crowds. Watch as the local restaurants prepare for the day and set up their terraces for delicious lunches and dinners ahead.

Naoussa Paros harbor

It is at sunset when Naoussa truly comes alive. As the golden hour casts its warm glow upon the town, visitors start filling up streets, terraces, and rooftops to enjoy a cocktail or a tasty dinner! The best places to do so are mostly around the port and by the small beach located just East of it, from where the sunset views are amazing. I was truly swept away by the charming atmosphere of Naoussa at sunset time.

Naoussa Paros sunset

2. Visit the Moraitis Winery

There is evidence of wine being produced by the Greeks for more than 6500 years and you can learn more about it with a visit of the Moraitis Winery , just outside of Naoussa.

With a history dating back generations, this family-owned winery proudly showcases the island’s winemaking traditions. Book a winery tour and a super friendly and knowledgeable guide will share his insights on the family history, grape cultivation, and the winemaking processes. The 45 min tour ends with a wine tasting of 3 or 5 wines that can be paired with a cheese tasting. Visiting Moraitis Winery is one of the best things to do in Nouassa if you are a wine enthusiast seeking an authentic and enriching experience. Since most of the restaurants on the island have Moraitis wines on their menu, I recommend doing the wine tasting (that can be done without the winery visit) at the beginning of your trip, so you can make informed decisions during your upcoming dinners!

The winery tours are regularly fully booked, so don’t forget to book online well in advance.

Naoussa Paros Moraitis Winery

3. Check out the stunning beaches around Noussa, Paros

The island of Paros is well known for its pretty beaches and a few of them are located on the North Coast, a short drive away from Naoussa.

  • Monastiri Beach : Named after the church perched on a nearby rocky cliff, this beach is part of Paros Environmental and Cultural Park , dedicated to preserving the beautiful wildlife of the island. Once upon a time a quiet little cove it is now home to a trendy beach club, also named Monastiri Beach. The beach is lined up with loungers and parasols and there is a bar and a restaurant on site. Sheltered from the strong winds, and with very shallow water, this beach is ideal for a relaxing day, including with children. We didn’t stay at the beach as I personally prefer much wilder beaches, but we had lunch at the Monastiri Beach restaurant and both food and wine were excellent! Umbrella sets on the beach go from 50 to 70 EUR / day and you should book ahead .

Naoussa Paros - Monastiri beach

  • Perikopetra Beach : My favorite beach, not only in Naoussa but on the whole island. Not technically a beach as there is no sand strip, Perikopetra is a stunning cove with crystal clear water, lined up by white bolder where you can lay your towel and leave your belongings. The area is not well known so you are quite likely to be there almost by yourself, which is pretty special in Paros ! To access the beach, park your car at the Monastiri Beach parking and keep walking to the left of the Beach Club, following hiking trail #3.

Naoussa Paros Perikopetra Beach

  • Kolymbithres Beach : Often mentioned as one of the best beaches on Paros island , Kolymbithres Beach is only 10 min drive from the center of Naoussa. It is a beautiful beach made of several little coves, bordered by large rock formations. The water is crystal clear and each little creek offer some parasols, sunloungers, etc. I personally visited in the afternoon and thought it was too packed but I can totally imagine Kolymbithres Beach to be stunning early morning before the crowd arrives.

Naoussa Paros Kolymbithres Beach

  • Santa Maria Beach : 12 min drive East of Naoussa, you will find Santa Maria beach, a sandy beach with turquoise waters and great views of the nearby Naxos island. The bay offers shallow and calm waters, ideal for families. You can grab some (pretty expensive)sun loungers in the eponym beach club or simply lay your towel on the sand in the small free area of the beach.

Hike in Paros Park, only 10 min from Naoussa

If you have had enough of lounging at the beautiful beaches of Naoussa, why not go for a hike and find new viewpoints to admire the beautiful island? Paros Park is located just 15 min drive from Nouassa, and offers 3 main walking routes and 4 secondary paths, going all around the Peninsula. The hikes are of moderate intensity (although the heat can make it more challenging than anticipated) and pass through beautiful viewpoints. Don’t miss the Korakas Cape Lighthouse and stop by some beautiful creeks for a refreshing dip, like in Perikopetra Beach .

Hiking Paros Park is one of the best things to do near Naoussa, and if you love it, you can also find quite a bit of hiking trails in the center of the island. You can check all the routes on ParosHikes.com .

WHERE TO STAY IN NAOUSSA

Naoussa and its surroundings offer some of the most beautiful properties on the island and are a great place to stay during your time in Paros . After hours (or days!!) of research for the best hotels in Paros , I came up with the below list of 8 amazing hotels and villas, that have stunning architecture, and beautifully decorated rooms, and are ideally located in or around Naoussa. Due to the increasing popularity of Paros island in general and Naoussa in particular, hotel prices get crazy high during peak seasons, so I highly recommend booking way in advance in order to grab the best deal

WHERE TO EAT IN NAOUSSA

Naoussa has hands down the best restaurants on the island! From street food to semi-fine dining and the best dessert in Paros , there is definitely something for everyone and we were never disappointed. Don’t hesitate to book ahead, as Naoussa gets extremely busy at night, and finding a table in the most popular restaurants can be a challenge. Here are the Naoussa restaurants we tried and loved.

  • Sigi Ikthios : Located on a lively square by the port, Sigi Ikhtios serves delicious Greek cuisine and fresh seafood. At night the square is absolutely packed which brings a great lively ambiance! The tzatziki serving is generous and the main courses we tried (calamari risotto and prawn linguinis) were yummy. The digestive shot offered at the end of the dinner was the cherry on the cake! Service is friendly and incredibly quick considering the crowd! Definitely book ahead or come super early to grab a table. | Reserve here
  • Luaz Seafood : Modern and trendy restaurant split between the seaside (facing Naoussa’s sunset) and a beautiful town square. We were happy to find some fresh sushis, sashimis and prawn tempuras to finally have a light dinner! The ambiance is a bit fancy ( slightly pretentious maybe ) but the service is impeccable. We had a lovely time, in particular thanks to the stunning sunset view by the sea, but I thought it was pretty overpriced. Book ahead and insist on being seated on the seaside, otherwise, it is not worth it. | Reserve here
  • Daverona : If you can’t eat seafood and would like a quiet restaurant away from the crowd, Daverona is a great choice. We ordered the pasta linguini and stuffed chicken and both were delicious. The service was friendly and efficient, and the price was very reasonable (for Paros’ standards). Because it is located further from the center, the atmosphere is calmer, and less crowded than other places. | Reserve here
  • Come back : A cool cafe, with good salads and cocktails, perfect for lunch by the sea or some casual sunset cocktails. | Reserve here
  • To Paradosiako : It doesn’t matter how full you are from dinner, you simply cannot miss grabbing dessert at To Paradosiako. An institution for years, they serve the best Loukoumades on the island. Loukoumades are traditional doughnut balls, covered in delicious toppings, like honey and cinnamon, Nutella, etc. It is worth every single calorie!

Naoussa Paros Best restaurants

Travel Tips: The best way to book for dinner is by calling the restaurants as most don’t seem to have WhatsApp. But if like me you don’t have a functioning phone line while in Paros, you can either email (better do it a few days ahead) or just walk to the restaurant in the early afternoon. Usually, there is staff preparing for the dinner service and they can take your reservation on the spot.

HOW TO GET TO NAOUSSA

Paros island is easily accessible from Athens and the nearby Cycladic islands, via plane or ferry:

  • Flying to Paros: Paros has a small local airport, effortlessly connecting the island to Athens and Thessaloniki through two leading airlines, Aegean and Sky Express. Prepare for a swift flight, as the journey from Athens to Paros is only 45 minutes. During peak seasons, daily connections abound, but it’s wise to plan ahead and secure your spot early, as flights tend to fill up quickly. My go-to platform for checking out the best flight options is always Skyscanner .
  • Ferry to Paros: Hopping on a ferry to Paros is a great alternative for travelers journeying from Athens or other nearby islands like Mykonos and Naxos. Embrace a slower pace as the Athens-Paros route typically takes between 3 to 4.5 hours. During the summer months, ferry fares between Athens and Paros range from 40 EUR to 70 EUR while the shorter trip from Mykonos to Paros (1h) costs around 50 EUR. Based on my own experience, the ferries are both secure and reliable, providing comfy seating, reliable internet as well as food and beverage service. You can find the best ferry options and book your ticket in advance with Ferry Hopper .

Once you arrive either at Parikia Port, or Paros Airport, Naoussa is only a short drive away (20 min from the ferry terminal and 30 min from the airport). The best way to reach Naoussa and discover the island on your own terms is by renting a car. In 2023 we rented our car via RentalCar and paid only 27 EUR / day for a small Volkswagen Up, which was a great deal. Traffic can be intense and parking situations difficult around Parikia and Naoussa, so don’t hesitate to rent a small car, like a Fiat 500 or equivalent. You can also easily rent an ATV or some scooters from Parikia or Naoussa.

If you prefer public transport, there are quite a few bus lines connecting all the main towns of the island, including one starting from the Airport. To go to Naoussa, you will have to stop in Parikia first and then hop onto the Parikia – Naoussa bus, which comes every 30 min to 1h, from 6.30 am to 3 am. You can find the latest info on schedules and tickets here .

BEST TIME TO VISIT NAOUSA

Like all the Cycladic islands, the best time to visit Naoussa and Paros, in general, is during the shoulder months of May, June, and September. During these months, the weather is lovely without being too hot, and the full crowd hasn’t arrived yet. Chances are, prices will also be slightly lower than during July and August too. Sadly, Naoussa is no longer the quaint little fisherman village it once was, so if you want some calm and quiet, definitely avoid the peak summer months.

A Quick Guide to Naoussa – Paros’ Chic Harbour Village

The whitewashed harbour village of Naoussa (sometimes spelt Naousa ) is extraordinarily pretty – and increasingly one of the most popular destinations in the Cyclades. Situated at the northern end of the island of Paros, it’s undeniably one of the highlights of any trip to this unique Greek island. Wondering if it’s the right place for you? Read on.

narrow street with flowers in Naoussa

What’s Naoussa Like?

When you picture a trip to the Greek islands do you imagine a whitewashed town with those distinctive sugarcube buildings? Well, Naoussa is certainly one of the best examples of that.

But if you’re looking for a quiet place with an authentic Greek feel then Naoussa is probably not for you – it’s no longer a hidden secret, and has a little bit of that cosmopolitan vibe that Mykonos Chora is known for. It’s not (yet) Disneyfied but it does cater to very modern tastes. There are a few traditional Greek tavernas, but these are outnumber by swanky international cuisine and chic cocktails bars, with a generous side helping of expensive designer clothing boutiques. Food and drink prices are higher than average. The narrow cobbled alleyways are a delight to wander around but in high season you will be nose-to-tail with fellow travellers. At around midnight the late bars get going and there are a few places to continue dancing til dawn.

Linardi, Naoussa

It is undeniably beautiful and though and attracts a mixed crowd of visitors, even if the shopping caters to a young urban crowd and Instagrammers.

There’s still a sizeable fishing fleet based in Naoussa’s harbour and you can watch the fishermen get their catch on in the mornings and evenings.

Lots of people drive in to Naoussa in the evening from the surrounding areas so I’d be careful on the roads at night.

fishing boats in Naoussa harbour

The harbour is particularly picturesque at sunset. The light in this part of the Greek islands is something you have to experience.

However I was struck by the amount of trash in the sea in the harbour and on the coastline in the wider area, despite the best efforts of Clean Blue Paros to tackle this (although this problem is by no means limited to Naoussa or to Paros!). Hopefully attitudes will start to change.

Where to Stay in Naoussa?

Naoussa is the most popular seasonal resort on Paros and there’s an abundance of accommodation options. There aren’t many places to stay in the old part of town which is behind the harbour though. This is where most of the shops are bars are located, so it’s pretty busy and loud in the evening and it would feel a bit claustrophobic to stay here. If you’re determined to stay central here are a few 2-star hotels next to the harbour.

There’s a cluster of accommodation to the west of the old quarter, spreading out towards Piperi beach and up onto the hill behind. This is where most of Naoussa’s budget accommodation is located. There’s an increasing amount of development going on near Piperi, including some boutique hotels. There’s a bus stop near the beach too, and it’s a 5-15 minutes walk into town depending on your location. Be aware that many hotels are up a short hill and the roads around here are very rough concrete – certain death for wheeled luggage.

Piperi beach, Naoussa

Beyond Piperi and half way to Kolymbithres is Livadia , home to some of the best luxury hotels in the area such as Parilio , Astir and Sant Andrea Seaside Resort . The shore here is rocky with some narrow bits of beach. It’s a long walk to town.

On the east side of the old chora is another cluster, but on this side you’ll find many small boutique hotels – like the fabulously-named Angels Pillow (adults-only). The beach on this side – Agioi Anargyroi – is better than Piperi but by no means the best on Paros. There are a number of hotels right by the back (across the road). Parian Boutique Hotel , Kalypso Hotel , and Conteratos Beach Hotel are all very close to the beach.

Design-lovers should check out Mr and Mrs White or the adults-only  Lilly Residences ,

On a budget? Hotel Mary is a cheap and friendly hotel run by ex-backpackers.

Which Are the Best Beaches Near Naoussa?

Before you book a stay in Naoussa it’s important to know that there’s no beach right in town. If you want to walk out of your hotel and flop on the beach then there are much better places to do that than Naoussa – check Where to Stay in the Cyclades:Ultimate Beach Resort Guide for more ideas.

The closest two beaches to town are:

  • Piperi – course-grained sand, can get a bit wavey.
  • Agoi Anaryroi – cleaner and more sheltered than Piperi, with some sun loungers. Not so private as the road runs along side it.

Agoi Anargyroi beach, Naoussa

Neither are the finest (or cleanest) beaches in the area and it’s definitely worth heading further afield if you’re planning a beach day. The most beautiful beaches in the area are short trip away by boat or road.

But Naoussa is located in the middle of a large semi-enclosed Plastira Bay which is home to some spectacular coastal scenery. Particularly on the western peninsula where the large granite boulders and strange rock formations now form part of the 80 hectare Paros Paros. You can spend a day here exploring smaller coves and coastal trails.

water taxi map and sign, Naoussa

Thankfully there are plenty of water taxis right at the harbour which sell return tickets. It’s an easy day out. Depending on the season, not all routes run every day but there should be at least one running (as long as the weather is ok):

Kolymbithres and Monastiri are the most famous beaches with fine sands and shallow waters strewn with boulders. They are both organise organised with a few cafes and tavernas on hand as well as gentle watersports.

Lageri on the eastern peninsula also sometimes features on the boat routes – the sheltered sands here are in a wild and undeveloped part of coast and are favoured by the clothing-optional crowd, just so you know. The beaches before Lageri are not notable – the double beach at Stefano is better from a distance – but you can have an excellent seafood supper at Siparos .

All three are much more sheltered from the winds and waves than the beaches at Naoussa.

You can also catch the bus or drive to Santa Maria where you’ll find the windsurfing aficionados on a long sandy stretch of beach, and a sheltered family-friendly cove at Mikri Santa Maria .

Boat trip to Kolymbithres

What to Do in Naoussa?

Naoussa is a great destination for those who don’t just want to flop on the beach – it’s a photogenic base with great upmarket shopping, dining, and nightlife. The main appeal is simply wandering its labyrinth. But there are a few things in particular worth checking out:

One of Naoussa’s main landmarks is Kastelli , the Venetian fortress which is right by the harbour. It’s a great spot for photos but you’ll need sure footing to cross the walkway which is constantly battered by waves.

The other great photo spot is where the old buildings abruptly meet the sea – look for the bright pink Linardo at the end of the harbour and keep walking around the corner, or have lunch at one of the cafes with waterfront tables such as Fotis .

At the back of town on the east side is the Moraitis Winery where you can stop by to taste a flight of local wines.

blue taverna tables in Naoussa

As Naoussa is an old fishing village it’s no surprise there are plenty of great seafood restaurants (including trendy sushi joints) around the harbour.

Want to support the fight against single-use plastic? Clean Blue Paros have a map of participating businesses including cafes offering reusables.

To explore the wider area under your own steam there are many rental agencies where you can pick up a car, an ATV, a scooter, or a bicycle.

If you’re into hiking then you should definitely spend some time at Paros Park, and then also head inland for hiking trails around Paros’ gorgeous interior villages such as Lefkes and Marpissa. You can find further details at Paros Hikes . Dedicated hikers might want to pick up a copy of Cicerone – Walking on the Greek Islands which covers Paros as well as neighbouring islands.

It’s possible to visit neighbouring islands Antiparos and Naxos on day trips but you’ll have to reach Pounta and Parikia respectively to catch the ferry. In high summer (July/August) you may find additional water taxi routes available, as well as excursions further afield to islands like Mykonos and Delos.

fishing boats in Naoussa inner harbour

How to Get to Naoussa?

Naoussa is on the very northern tip of Paros. The main ferry port on Paros is Parikia – see KTEL Paros for routes and timetables. There is a small bus station right next to the ferry port and buses frequently run the 10km to Naoussa.

Paros is well-connected with Pireaus and other islands in the Cyclades. See Ferryhopper for ferry connections and tickets.

It also has an airport, currently domestic flights only – see Skyscanner for flights and deals.

Naoussa has a popular marina – see Marina Reservation  for further info.

2. Moraitis Winery

One of my favorite things to do in Naoussa was visiting Moraitis Winery . You can walk up from town for an afternoon of wine tasting and a tour of the winery. I’d highly recommend making reservations in advance, particularly if you are interested in a tour. Note that the tour is not available after 5pm, so plan accordingly! We went mid-afternoon since we spent the morning hiking, and it was absolutely perfect.

There are so many great places to enjoy craft cocktails in Naoussa, and I have a few different recommendations for spots. Naoussa is definitely known for its nightlife, so you really can’t go wrong. Each evening in Naoussa, we hit up a different spot and honestly I loved all of them. The atmosphere of being able to sit in the white cobblestone alleys and people watch was just amazing. 6. Shopping in Naoussa

Make sure to set aside some time to do a little shopping. The most typical souvenirs of Naoussa are local wine, cheese, honey, olive oil, and jams. I can personally attest to having tried all of the items and would fully recommend either partaking in them while on the island or bringing a little something home with you.

7. Van Tour Around Paros

If you’re short on time in Paros, then this is the ticket for you. Join this half-day guided tour around the island. You’ll get to see the main sights without the hassle of having to rent a car, navigate, or find parking.

Lefkes Cafe in Paros

8. Old Port of Naoussa

When I think of the best things to do in Naoussa, Paros, the old port is what immediately comes to mind. The port is full of the old style fishing boats, fishermen mending their nets, and the fresh catch of the day strung out to dry.

It’s no surprise that some of the restaurants surrounding the old port have the freshest seafood in town! There’s one restaurant that actually sets up a table on an old fishing boat if you really want to get into the fishing vibes. I loved walking around the port in the morning before it got too busy, but also really enjoyed the people watching that came with sunset and dinner time.

Naoussa Port in Paros, Greece

9. Venetian Fortress

Located in the gorgeous old port, take some time to visit the old Venetian Fortress. It was built in the 15 th century to protect the town from pirates. In Medieval times, pirates were a huge threat to the town and there are tales of pirates raiding settlements for food and killing the locals. On August 23 rd each year, the town celebrates the Barbarossa Pirate Festival of Paros to celebrate its victory against the notorious pirate, Barbarossa. Naoussa has many references to Barbarossa today and the restaurant was actually one of my favorite Instagram spots on Paros !

Much of the fortress has crumbled and fallen into ruin, but it is interesting to experience the history and also provides some great viewpoints for photos.

10. Vacation Photographer

The town is so incredibly photogenic that one of the best things to do in Paros is to schedule a vacation photographer to commemorate your time on the island! Whether you’re traveling solo, planning a proposal, or just want to capture picture-perfect memories with loved ones, it makes for a memorable experience!

The views alone make this one of the best things to do in Naoussa and I cannot describe how great the vibes are during sunset.

12. Sunrise at Paros Viewpoint

At the other end of the spectrum, I’d recommend catching the sunrise at Paros Viewpoint. To get there, Google Linardo (an extremely Instagrammable bar). From Linardo, walk toward the Aegean Sea, and you’ll see this viewpoint of Paros to your right. It was definitely one of my favorite photo spots on Paros and I loved the morning light at the location. Here is the location on Google Maps . This does transition into an area where people eat later on in the day, so I’d definitely recommend coming in the morning, even if you don’t make it in time for sunrise!

Paros Viewpoint also gives you unbeatable views of the island’s whitewashed houses over a sparkling blue sea. We launched our drone (we have a  DJI Mini 2 ) to get these views of the town. Before launching, make sure to check Greece’s drone regulations and the weather conditions to ensure you’re operating safely and according to the rules!

On The Water

13. sailing in the small cyclades.

Spend a day sailing through the crystal clear water of the Aegean. Swim, snorkel, explore secret beaches, and soak up the sun while sipping on Greek wine. The sailing excursion leaves from Piso Livadi, which is approximately 20 minutes from Naoussa. You can coordinate a transfer to Piso Livadi through the tour company or through your hotel.

Spending time on the water was absolutely one of my highlights from my time in Greece and one of the best things to do in Naoussa. The water is stunning and it is so relaxing.

14. Small Boat Rental

If you’re more of a do-it-yourself kind of person, this self-drive small boat rental may be the ticket for you. You can explore Paros’ secluded beaches by boat and a big plus of this specific rental is it includes snorkel equipment! This will give you the flexibility to go where you want on your own timetable. The marina is located in Aliki, Paros.

15. Traditional Gulet to Despotiko & Antiparos

Another option to get on the water is to do an island cruise on a traditional gulet . You’ll sail on the gulet along the coast of Paros, explore some pirate caves, and then on to discover Despotiko and Antiparos. The boat leaves from Piso Livadi, which is approximately 20 minutes from Naoussa. You can coordinate a transfer to Piso Livadi through the tour company (reach out at least 2 days in advance) or through your hotel.

16. Day Cruise to Amorgos

If you have the time during your trip to Naoussa, it is worth looking into a day trip to Amorgos .  Amorgos is the easternmost island of the Cyclades and the island’s stunning mountain scenery surrounded by the unending sparkling water make for an incredibly scenic day trip. Amorgos is a bit more secluded than its neighbors and is home to charming alleyways, noteworthy architecture, and fabulous beaches.

Parks & Beaches

17. paros park.

Paros Park is a protected seaside nature reserve with a network of walking trails, remote beaches, and hidden caves. It one of my favorite things to do in Naoussa, Paros. One of the paths leads to Korakas Lighthouse, located on the point. If you’re interested in the lighthouse, follow trail number 1. There is also a 3.9 mile loop that is a popular spot for an easy hike.  AllTrails  includes all sorts of hiking tips, maps, and recent trail conditions if you are interested in a hike.

Paros Park lighthouse

It was incredibly windy the day we went, but it turned out to be a really enjoyable hike overall. We enjoyed great views of the Aegean Sea and could look back toward Paros, as well. Paros Park is a great way to escape the summer crowds and enjoy a bit of nature.

18. Kolymbithres Beach

Ok, I’m going to give you three beach recommendations that are near Naoussa and based on what you’re looking for that day, you can make your decision. Kolymbithres is one of the most famous beaches on Paros and has absolutely stunning scenery. Picture huge rocks framing the beach and small coves. However, it is definitely a well-known beach and it was absolutely packed when we went. I like a quieter scene, so we didn’t stay long.

However, there are a number of positives for visiting Kolymbithres. In comparison to a lot of the beaches on Paros, Kolymbithres is calm, quiet, and relatively windless, making it a great place for small kids to easily play in the water. There are sunbeds for rent, though they do tend to be filled by late morning and tend to be more expensive than those on the rest of the island.

Kolymbithres is also one of the easiest beaches to get to from Naoussa – a water taxi from the port of Naoussa will drop you at the beach in just over 5 minutes.  There are also scheduled busses and taxis from town. Lastly, there are a handful of beach bars and restaurants, making it easy to grab snacks and drinks while at the beach.

Overall, the scenery makes it a must-see thing to do in Naoussa, but I’d recommend coming in the morning before it gets too busy. If you time it right, it is one of the best things to do in Naoussa, Paros.

19. Lageri Beach

Lageri is more difficult to access and can be a bit tricky to find. However, this means that it is much quieter than Kolymbithres. There are no sunbeds or umbrellas, so bring your own.

Lageri is a gorgeous sandy beach and is relatively calm. Fair warning: it is a nudist beach, but you’ll also see families enjoying the sunshine. Of the three beaches mentioned in this article, Lageri is the most off the beaten path.

20. Santa Maria Beach

Honestly, Santa Maria was my beach of choice on Paros. It has the best of both worlds: it is easily accessible, has a free section of the beach, and also has a beach bar . My recommendation is to put down a towel on the free section of the beach and then just walk over to the beach bar when you want a drink or some food.

The sunbeds seemed a little expensive, but I loved the beach. Even if it isn’t beach weather, it is worth taking a stroll down the beach to get stunning views of the rock pools. The scenery alone makes it one of the best things to do in Naoussa, Paros.

Where to Stay in Naoussa, Paros

There are so many great options for where to stay in Naoussa. Here are a few of my recommendations!

Lilly Residence (Adults Only) – Enjoy luxurious accommodations and breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea at this stunning hotel. This is truly a once in a lifetime experience – take advantage of the champagne breakfast on the sun terrace or tasty cocktails at the pool-side bar. Best of all, this hotel is only a 5 minute walk into town!

Paliomylos Spa Hotel – This mid-range hotel offers a pool with spectacular views of the Aegean Sea. If you get a little chilly, take a dip in the indoor salt-water hot tub. The hotel is located within walking distance of restaurants and bars and is about 10 minutes from downtown Naoussa.

Fotilia Hotel – This mid-range boutique hotel is located just a few minutes’ walk from the center of downtown (and is pretty affordable!) They also offer a free airport shuttle service, which makes getting to the hotel incredibly convenient. It is a family-run business and all of the employees are so welcoming. Fun fact – the hotel has a windmill room if you want to get super into the Greek life!

Getting to Naoussa, Paros

The two main ways to get to Paros are via air or ferry, depending upon your starting point. If you are arriving from Athens, you could choose to fly (we did) or come via ferry. The flights from Athens are approximately 45 minutes vs. a ferry ride of 3-4 hours. For us, the ability to save time coupled with the fact that we were already at the Athens airport made it an easy choice. Aegean Air offers multiple direct flights per day from Athens to Paros. From the airport, arrange transport to your hotel in Naoussa or rent a car.

Your other option is via the ferry. If you are coming from another island (Naxos, Santorini, Mykonos, etc.), the ferry is an easy option. FerryHopper helps to find the best and cheapest ferry tickets and searches across the main ferry companies in the area. When moving between islands on our Greece trip, we used FerryHopper to book tickets and it was an incredibly easy process. From the ferry port in Parikia, it is easy to find a cab to your hotel or you can rent a car.

Getting Around Paros

I personally recommend renting some kind of vehicle to get around Paros. It gives you so much more flexibility to explore the entire island on your own schedule. Whether you prefer a scooter, ATV, or car is completely up to you.

Of our 4 days on Paros, we rented an ATV for a day, a car for two days, and were on foot for one day. Pros of an ATV are that it is fun and easier to park in busy locations. However, if you are driving long distances, it gets a bit sweaty under the Greek sun (and also very windy!) Cars are preferable for driving any longer distances around the island, but ATVs or scooters are sufficient for hopping between the nearby beach and town.

ATV rental in Naoussa, Paros

To find your best deal on car rentals in Paros, check out Expedia . The site will filter through all the larger rental companies on the island so you can get your best deal. One thing to note here – there are certainly some cheaper deals, but oftentimes, they are with less reputable companies. I’d recommend either sticking with a global company you know (e.g. Alamo, Budget, Hertz, etc.) or thoroughly reading the reviews of the smaller companies. There are definitely some great smaller companies out there and we rented our ATV from one of them!

If you’re planning to mostly stay within Naoussa and/or you prefer to not rent any type of vehicle, you can take advantage of the public bus system on Paros or book transfers. Parikia is the center of most of the bus routes. The Paros bus timetable is straightforward and ticket prices are reasonable. The main downside of the busses is that you will have less freedom to explore on your own and you will have to be aware of the bus schedules.

I hope you found this guide to the top things to do in Naoussa, Paros helpful in planning your travels. If you have any other cool things to do in Naoussa, drop them in the comments…I always love to hear your suggestions!

Naoussa: one of the most interesting travel destinations in the attractive central macedonia  .

Old neighbourhoods, exquisitely beautiful groves and fine wines

BY NIKOS MAOUNIS

Translated by avgi daferera, published 10 september 2022.

Built on the foothills of mount Vermio , Naoussa is a city with history, interesting sights, special flavours, but also home to celebrated vineyards and wineries, making fine wines.

All the above make the mountainous city of Imathia one of the most interesting travel destinations in the already attractive central Macedonia region, gaining it the title “land of Xinomavro”. A title that makes sense, since this unconventional but charming variety of wine –with its intense red colour, beautiful aromas and strong tannins, reminiscent of Pinot Noir– is produced here.

Meanwhile, the link between a good life and wine drinking seems to have deep roots in local time, as ancient mythology tells us that Semeli, the mother of the god Dionysus, was born in Vermio. In more recent times, the vineyards of Naoussa suffered great damages due to phylloxera. But from 1968 onwards, the Boutaris company –with Konstantinos & Giannis Boutaris at the helm – replanted about 500 acres of Xinomavro around Giannakohori.

Nowadays, apart from the Xinomavro , the varieties Negoska, Naousseiko, Sefka, Prekniariko, as well as so-called Local Wines of Imathia are also grown in the area. Younger winemakers are also entering the field, slowly reviving the Naoussa wine-growing zone, which has been registered as a Protected Designation of Origin Zone. Xinomavro, of course, is still the finest red variety in northern Greece, making Naoussa one of the most famous wine-producing areas in all of Macedonia. It also retains the OPAP (Appellation of Origin of Superior Quality) designation.

Naoussa of wine.

Most of the wineries in the city and the wider region are open to visitors, being members of the “Wine Roads of Northern Greece” ( www.wineroads.gr ). They are also included in the “ Naoussa Wine Route ”, the largest part of which extends to the boundaries of the municipality of the same name, which is the second largest in the prefecture of Imathia (23.000 inhabitants), including the former communities of Arkohori, Giannakohori, Rodohori and Stenimacho. There is no better way to get acquainted with the local wine culture than to follow this route.

Well acclimatized to continental climates, Xinomavro is grown on many mountain slopes in central Macedonia, as far away as Pindos, Thessaly, and Greece’s border with North Macedonia. Apart from Naoussa, it is also found in Amindeo, Goumenissa, Pella, Siatista, Grevena, Velvento, Metsovo and Rapsani.

The Wine Route starts from Veria, 74 kilometres from Thessaloniki, and from the small village of Vergina –world-famous for the museum of the same name, where momentous archaeological finds are kept. You must absolutely visit the museum, and it’s best to do it with a guide, if you want to understand the magic of ancient Macedonia.

The road then goes up to Bagratsa and continues in the peripheral areas of Naoussa: Stenimacho, Mademi, Giannakohori, Nea Stranza and Episkopi. It is a landscape full of alternating, undulating slopes, dotted with the famous vineyards. The route ends, of course, in Naoussa, whose natural balcony-park overlooking the valley offers travellers a perfect stopping spot.

What else is worth seeing in naoussa .

Apart from wine, Naoussa also had a golden age with the textile industries that developed there in the 19th century, as the Arapitsa river that runs through town made it particularly suitable for this profession. Vetlans Naoussa was once world-famous, although it has not stood the test of time. Today, most of these beautiful industrial buildings have been handed over to the municipality as Industrial Heritage and are about to be returned to the residents and visitors of the city as places of recreation and culture.

So, let’s start with a walk through the old neighbourhoods – Alonia, Puliana and Batania. The rich mansions, the imposing public buildings, the thematic Wine and Vine Museum, and the traditional Macedonian houses take you on a journey to a glorious past. A trademark is the Clock Tower, located in front of the Town Hall. It was built in 1 985 , using limestone, and it stands 25 meters high. The new meeting point for the residents, however, has become the new Obelisk, in the main square.

Three kilometres outside Naoussa, the Agios Nikolaos Grove has been declared a place of outstanding natural beauty. Photo: Shutterstock

Next stop is the Municipal Park, where there’s an artificial lake, wooden bridges, alleys, fountains, and paved paths. Here, you’ll see ducks, pigeons, peacocks, and squirrels, but you’ll also enjoy the wonderful view of the plain of Imathia. And, of course, you’ll also pass by the place of Sacrifice, where in 1822 – during the massacre of Naoussa– several women of the city preferred to throw themselves and their children into the waters of Arapitsa, rather than be captured by the Ottomans. Thus, after the establishment of the Greek state, Naoussa was declared “heroic” by royal decree and a monumental statue of a woman from Naoussa with children in her arms was built at the site of the sacrifice, in Stubani.

At 3 km from the city, you can visit the Agios Nikolaos Grove , which has been declared a place of outstanding natural beauty. It is a green area with huge plane trees, crossed by the Arapitsa river. It includes a small artificial lake with trout and ducks, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, a playground, restaurants, taverns, and cafes. Finally, if you find yourself in Naoussa during carnival season, the Genitsari and Boules custom is a unique traditional event.

Arkohori, Giannakohori –where the Holy Monastery of Timios Prodromos, an important attraction, is located– and Rodohori, the Pontian village of Imathia, are worth visiting.

In general, the region is a skiing paradise, with 3-5 Pigadia resort being a great destination for winter sports enthusiasts. It is located at an altitude of 1,430-2,005 meters, with a snowmaking system. In addition, there is Seli at an altitude of 1,530 – 1,890 meters, which is the first organized ski resort in Greece.

Further attractions include the Macedonian Tombs of Judgement and of the Flowers (of the Palmettes) in Leukadia, two of the best-preserved monuments of ancient Mieza, as well as the city’s ancient theatre, which has been renovated. In the first tomb there is also a rare painted decoration, dating back to the end of the 4th century BC.

In general, Mieza a city thrived during the years of the Macedonian kings, especially during the period when it hosted the famous School of Aristotle, where he taught young nobles “moral and political reason”. In fact, Alexander the Great was among his students, between 343 and 340 BC, before moving to Pella. The School was located at Nympheon, outside present-day Naoussa. Nowadays, on the opposite side of the road, there is the Cultural Centre, which is dedicated to it: visitors can learn about the history and the archaeological site through the audio-visual material available.

Of course, starting from Naoussa , you can visit two other beautiful cities in northern Greece: Veria, which is also the capital of Imathia, and Edessa, with its famous waterfalls. In Veria, it is worth passing by the Apostle Paul’s Tribune (Bema), the place where the Apostle Paul taught during his visit there between 50 and 60 AD.

In addition, there are famous Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches, such as the Holy Monastery of Timios Prodromos or Panagia Soumela , chapels on the lush green foothills of Vermio, and of course the traditional districts of Barbuta (Jewish) and Kyriotissa, with their old houses with wooden balconies. Last but not least on the attraction list, Arapitsa: the river that shapes Naoussa with its passage and has always been its driving force. That’s why they call it “white coal”, after all.

17 Things to Do in Naoussa Paros, Greece

Here’s a guide to the best 17 best things to do in Naoussa Paros, Greece. Paros is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea, part of the Cyclades island group and the entire island is picturesque. Naoussa is the most cosmopolitan town on the island of Paros and whether it’s a day trip or your holiday base, this comprehensive guide to Naoussa Paros has you covered!

Getting From Paros Port and Paros Airport to Naoussa

Like many other Cyclades Greek islands, you can reach Naoussa Paros from Athens by boat or plane . Leaving from either Piraeus or Rafina port, you will be in the port of Parikia in about three to four hours, depending on the route.

Ferry docked at the main port of Paros, Greece

🚗 If you have a rental car, the distance from Parikia to Naousa is only 10 kilometers and there are signs to direct you there in about 15 minutes. The most beautiful mountain village on Paros, Lefkes , is also only 10 km from Naoussa.

🚗 Getting around the island by your own steam means trying the rental agencies in the main port or main town of Parikia, (or a few places in Naoussa) or booking ahead of time with Discover Cars to make sure there’s a vehicle available for you at prices that won’t make your eyes water.

🅿️ In Naoussa, you can park in one of the three free large parking areas at the entrance to the village. The car park that was in the center of the town is closed and the Old Town is car-free.

🛵 A scooter is another option and an ATV rental lets you get around on the dirt as well as the paved roads.

🚌 Another choice is to head to the bus station (next to the Parikia ferry port) and take the next one to Naoussa, as there are frequent connections. You can buy your tickets at the vending machine or from the bus driver for €1,80.

🚌 You can also buy a daily bus ticket that costs €10 and you can use it for as many bus rides as you want within the day. Lastly, if you prefer, a taxi will take you to Naoussa for about €25.

✈️ If you fly from Athens Eleftherios Venizelos Airport, you will reach Paros National Airport in 40 minutes.

⛴️ You can take the car ferry to Antiparos and also boat trips around Paros , Antiparos, and some of the nearby uninhabited islands.

Why choose Naoussa?

Naoussa is a fishing village in the northeastern part of the island whose harbor was defended from pirates by a Venetian castle. It is the “Mykonos” of Paros, full of glamorous and chic boutiques, bars, and restaurants. There are some excellent hotels and resorts here .

Beyond the souvenir shops are a series of alleyways that are one of the prettiest parts of the Greek Islands! Here’s what to see.

1. Traditional architecture and stone-paved alleys

The traditional architecture and the authentic character of Naoussa are maintained despite the massive tourism boom that has occurred in this quaint fishing village.

It will take just a short walk to Naoussa harbor at sunset to feel the magic of this place.

Back street of Naoussa, Paros Island, Greece

Whitewashed houses full of flowers with blue windows, fishing boats, and colorful restaurants with tables just a few meters from the water with amazing sea views make the old harbor an ideal place to start exploring Naoussa.

As you walk from the seaside pavement to the narrow stone-paved alleys and back streets of the village, you will discover why Naoussa is considered one of the most beautiful villages in the Cyclades.

2. Naoussa Marina

The village has the biggest fishing boat fleet in the Cyclades and the Naoussa marina is filled with pleasure craft.

Naoussa Marina, Paros, Greece

From small fishing boats to large yachts, all types can be found in the marina.

There are sections for tour boats for day trips, water taxis, and caiques that connect Naoussa with many beaches, start their journey here.

The whole waterfront area is packed with outdoor tables from the bars and restaurants and at night and until the wee hours of the morning, you can find people drinking and relaxing.

3. The Kastelli of Paros

At the edge of the village stands a small Venetian fortress, the Kastelli of Paros , built in the fifteenth century to defend the harbor.

naoussa greece tourist attractions

The view of the castle at night along with the various boats and the sea creates a scenic picture.

Although the Venetian castle is half sunken, a walk in the ruins during the daytime will take you back to the time the Venetians ruled the island and the view is great for taking photographs.

The visit is free and a stone path leads to the castle. The path can be slippery – be careful especially when the water is high.

4. Church of Saint Nikolaos

Next to the castle, the Church of Saint Nikolaos , protector of fishermen and naval officers is also worth a visit.

Agios Nikolaos, Naoussa, Paros

The small church is built at the entrance of the harbor and many small boats are moored in front of the church. The facade is minimal following the traditional Cycladic architecture and the elaborate belfry is made of marble. It’s impossibly scenic!

5. Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary

At the highest point of the village, you will reach a beautiful church, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary rising above Naoussa, Paros

The church is built on the east hill and has great views of the Aegean Sea.

The first church was built in the 17th century but was later demolished and a grander one was built in the 19th century.

The highlights are the two belfries and three entrances as well as the carved marble icon screen, the work of the sculptor Dimitrios Lyritis.

There are 16 marble stairs leading to the main entrance and an alley with pine trees in front of the church.

6. What to Eat: Naoussa specialties + mountains of seafood

There are countless Naoussa dining options, and in addition to the usual Greek cuisine , you’ll have the chance to try the local specialties.

Octopi drying in the sun at a seafood restaurant beside the port of Naoussa Paros

🍽️ Gouna is probably the most well-known traditional dish, sun-dried and salted mackerel .

🍽️ In general, the seafood is of high quality, and grilled octopus and kakavia (fish soup) are highlights in every taverna.

🍽️ Try local dishes that include or are based upon chickpeas and fava as well as dishes made of cheese like Saganaki.

🍽️ You will have a chance to buy local produce in many shops in the village: cheeses such as myzithra and cream cheese ( anthotiro ), wine and souma , an alcoholic drink similar to raki.

🍽️ Also, honey of wonderful quality is produced on Paros and other Cycladic islands. The small amount produced is usually sold out by the end of August.

Where to Eat in Naoussa

👩🏼‍🍳 One of my favorite places for food in Naoussa village is Kafenio Palia Agora , offering homemade traditional Greek food at great prices.

👩🏼‍🍳 Another great alternative is Yemeni Taverna , hidden in the narrow streets of the village. Meat eaters will love this place but great options are also available for vegetarians and vegans.

Fried fish, Naoussa waterfront

👩🏼‍🍳 Also, if you take the time to find the secret garden of restaurant Ydroussa you will be rewarded with an amazing meal in a beautiful private courtyard full of trees.

7. Naoussa Nightlife until Sunrise

Nightlife in Naoussa is very vivid, making the village very popular among young crowds. You will find choices from lounge bars with sea views to nightclubs open until the morning.

🍸 You can stop for an early evening drink at Fotis All Day Bar . The bar is on the beachfront with great sea views. Coffee, brunch options, and cocktails at reasonable prices make it one of the best bars in the village.

🍸 One of the locals’ favorite spots is Kosmos Cocktail Bar. Their menu includes classic cocktails but also their own.

🍸 You can kick on at Linardo , a nightclub with music and dancing until sunrise, in beautiful surroundings next to the sea.

Beaches, Beach Clubs, and Beach Bars

Beaches and beach bars must surely be one of the best parts of the Greek islands!

Some of the most beautiful beaches in Paros can be easily reached either by car, by foot or by taking a caique (small boat) or a water taxi from Naoussa marina.

8. Kolimbithres Beach, the best-known Paros beach

One of them you definitely don’t want to miss is Kolimbithres Beach .

Kolimbithres Beach, Naoussa Paros

Unique rocky formations, white sand, and crystal-clear blue water will amaze you after only a short trip from Naoussa.

The Beach bar Paros on the Rocks offers food and drinks all day long while you can rent sun loungers and umbrellas for an extra cost.

9. Monastiri (or Katholiko Beach) on windy days

Right next to Kolimbithres, you can also visit Monastiri (or Katholiko Beach) .

Monastiri beach, Naoussa, Paros

Monastiri Beach is in Paros Park and has clear shallow and calm water and is a great choice for days when the island is windy as it is one of the beaches less affected by the wind.

Monastiri Beach House is an elegant beach bar where you can rent sun loungers and umbrellas and taste a variety of dishes and drinks.

However, there is plenty of space on Monastiri Beach for those who prefer to sit on the sand in the shadow of the trees (the famous armirikia or Tamarix trees found on the Cycladic islands). Lastly, various water sports are available here.

10. Santa Maria Beach for white sand and water sports

Only two kilometers away from Naoussa, is Santa Maria Beach. Some argue that this is the best beach on the island and the most exotic one, and there are arguments to support it.

Santa Maria Beach and Beach Bar, Paros

Right opposite the island of Naxos, the water is cool and clear, while the sand is white and clean.

There are many beach bars and taverns on the shore to choose from and you can also try water sports such as windsurfing, kite surfing, jet skiing, and snorkeling.

Here you will also find Santa Maria Beach Bar, one of the best beach bars on the island.

The biggest part of the beach offers sun beds and umbrellas, however, along the shore are small coves where you can get the feeling of a private beach area.

These three beaches are the most popular ones in Paros.

🏖️ Note that the cost for sun beds and umbrellas usually starts at €30 per set (two loungers and one umbrella) and can reach €50 for the first rows.

If you prefer a beach within walking distance from Naoussa, you also have two great choices.

11. Agoi Anargyroi Beach

Agoi Anargyroi Beach, Paros, Greece

Agoi Anargyroi is a small beach only a 10-minute walk to the east side of the harbor. The beach is sandy with shallow water and two hotels in the area offer sun beds and umbrellas.

12. Piperi Beach

For a quieter option, head to Piperi Beach , in the West part of the village.

Piperi Beach, Naoussa, Paros

Piperi Beach is in Naoussa and the houses are so close to the sea that the water actually touches the walls.

There are a few sets of beds and umbrellas available to rent starting from €10 per set.

13. Visit the Environmental and Cultural Park of Paros

A short drive from the village you will find the Environmental & Cultural Park of Paros . You can get there either by car or by water taxi (take the one to Monastiri Beach).

Environmental and Cultural Park of Paros, Greece

The Environmental and Cultural Park is on an 800-acre peninsula where you can hike, swim, and take part in cultural and environmental activities.

Paros Park was founded in 2009 with the primary goal of promoting sustainable tourism in the Aegean Sea.

Inside the Park, there are walking trails, rocky formations, and coves to explore.

There is also an outdoor theatre that runs a summer Festival at the Park with concerts and plays and an open-air cinema.

There are three beaches in the park: the main one, Monastiri Beach, and two secluded beaches, Perikopetra, and Tourkou Ammos.

14. The Monastery of St. John’s of Deti

In Paros Park, you will also find The Monastery of St. John’s of Deti , with views of Naoussa Bay.

St. John of Deti monastery and exhibition building, Environmental and Cultural Park of Paros, Naoussa

The name Deti originated from the belief that St. John was able to cure malaria that hit Naoussa residents in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The monastery was built in the 16th century and renovated in 1806. On 29 August each year, the monastery holds its annual celebration. The night before people attend the midnight church service.

15. Wineries and Wine Tasting

The Greek islands have a long history of winemaking and one of my favorite activities in Naoussa is the wine tasting experience at Moraitis Winery.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Moraitis Winery (@moraitis_winery)

The winery was founded in 1910 and now the fourth generation of the family owns 10 hectares of land and continues the tradition of wine production with modern means.

It is a chance to taste some great wines and learn about the past, present, and future of wine production in the Cyclades.

16. Summer Festivals

During the summer, festivals take place all over Greece and on Paros island as well.

Festival in the Park, Naoussa Paros

🏴‍☠️ If you are lucky enough to be visiting Paros on 23 August, you can attend the Pirate Festival in Naoussa, prompted by Barbarossa’s invasion of Paros in 1537.

The village gets very crowded and the party continues until the early morning hours.

🐠🍷 Also, on 2 July, Naoussa celebrates the Fish and Wine Festival . Fishermen on their fishing boats fry fish in Naoussa harbour.

They offer the fired fish to festival goers along with local wine and souma . Music and traditional dances accompany the food. This was started by fishermen in the 1970s to attract tourists.

🎉 Festival in the Park runs from June to September featuring over 20 events at the Archilocus open-air amphitheater.

🎉Carnival in Naoussa (not to be confused with Carnival in Naoussa, northern Greece) begins on January 17 and if you’re in Greece in winter, this is the place to be!

17. Day Trips to Neighbouring Islands

Island hopping is a lot of fun from Paros because it’s so near other islands in the Cyclades group.

Here are the 10 most popular destinations for day-tripping from Paros. Check out Ferry Hopper for single and multi-destination timetables and tickets.

The wide difference in traveling times is because of the larger ferries and the high-speed catamarans. The catamarans can take half the time of the ferries which is essential if you’re taking a day trip.

  • Milos: 1-2 daily departures from June to September with fast ferries. Trip duration 1 hr 30 minutes to 3 hr 30 minutes
  • Ios: 4-6 daily departures from June to September with regular and high-speed ferries. Trip duration 3 hours (approx. half time for speed ferries).
  • Mykonos: 8-10 sailings from April to October. Journey takes 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 min.
  • Naxos: 3 to 7 departures depending on the season. Travel time is about 20 min.
  • Santorini: 4-5 daily itineraries from April to September. The journey takes from 1hr 45 to 4hrs 40 minutes depending upon the type of ferry you choose.
  • Amorgos: 2 dep. with High-speed Ferries and 1 with Regular ones. Travel time 3 hours
  • Syros: 2 daily departures from May to October. Travel time 1 hour, 35 minutes
  • Antiparos: small boats and car ferry from Poudra ports.
  • Kofonisia : 2 sailings per day, 2 hours 35 to 3 hours 5 min.

Boasting the best hotels on the island of Paros, you are spoilt for luxurious Naoussa hotels and other accommodation options but there are also a few lovely hotels in Naoussa for budget-conscious travelers.

Parilio, a Member of Design Hotels

One of the most beautifully furnished hotels on the island, and a contemporary minimalist exterior and pool area make this a stylish and private retreat. There are only four suites in this boutique luxury hotel at Kolimpythres.

Cosme, a Luxury Collection Resort

This property has only perfect reviews and is only 1 kilometer from the center of Naoussa. It’s only 50 meters from the beach and has a swimming pool and hot tub. The infinity pool looks over the sea and some rooms and suites have their own mini-infinity pools in the private courtyards.

Lilly Residence-Sea View Suites, Adults Only

Heated private plunge pools, infinity pools, and Spa baths, also a jetted tub (outdoor jacuzzi) in some suites, champagne buffet breakfast beside the pool, dinner, and cocktails at the pool bar, and Hermes accessories in the rooms make this hotel an obvious romantic choice.

Cove Resort

This is my favorite place in Paros – there is a wonderful holiday feeling in the landscaped private gardens and infinity pools, the lighting of the property at night, and just spectacular pool and beach areas. The rooms are lovely, but their private outdoor spaces make them extra special.

Minoa Hotel

For those traveling on a budget, Minoa Hotel is 300 meters from Naoussa Center with rooms overlooking the harbor. Free wifi and parking are available for the hotel guests.

Naoussa Paros: Guide to Paros Island’s Stylish Seaside Town

naoussa paros greece

As Paros Island grows in popularity as an alternative to more frequented islands like Santorini and Mykonos, Naoussa Paros is becoming a hotspot in the Greek Cyclades (also known as Naousa ).

This small but lively harbour town on the north side of Paros Greece is quickly turning into a refined and stylish destination . Chock full of trendy global eateries and suave bars , they take place of more traditional cafes and guesthouses (that you can find elsewhere on Greece Paros).

While Naoussa Greece can be described as the next Mykonos Chora, it also has an abundance of charm . Meandering the streets of Paros Naoussa, ducking into eclectic yet metropolitan shops , sitting al fresco and enjoying a seafood dish while watching the people go by.

It can all be found in Naousa Paros. Plus, some of the best beaches in Paros can be found within a 10-minute drive.

Naoussa Paros Greece: Who is it Best For?

Are you wondering where to stay in Paros Parikia or Naoussa ? Well, luckily there is a pretty big difference between Naoussa or Parikia and who each is best for.

If you are travelling to Paros for the first time and only have a few days and you crave the authentic quiet island life . Or, you want to base somewhere convenient for day trips and you want the convenience of the ferry port within walking distance , then Parikia is for you.

However, if you are visiting the Greek Islands to have some fun, nightlife , and experience a more social upmarket vacation , then Naoussa village is for you. Either way, whether you stay in Parikia or Naoussa town, you can visit the other Paros highlights within 15 minutes, so you won’t be losing out.

TIP | If you want to really get off the grid and experience Greek island life, book your villa in Lefkes Paros , a charming hilltop town

How to Get to Naoussa Paros

You’ve decided on staying in Naoussa Paros, but how do you get from Paros port to Naoussa (or Naoussa to Parikia)? Well, there are a few convenient ways to get there including car hire Paros , Paros ATV rental, taking buses in Paros or even grabbing a ride in a taxi Paros. I’ll go into more detail below:

Renting a Car in Paros + Naoussa

Car rental Paros Greece is pretty easy to find at the port town of Parikia, but if you are planning your trip to Paros Greece and specifically to Naoussa, I recommend booking in advance with Discover Cars .

What’s great about Discover Cars is they compare local, national and international rental companies to give you the best price , plus they give you full insurance coverage for only $7USD a day (30% lower than booking directly with a local company). You can expect to pay approximately $280USD base for a one-week economy car rental via Discover Cars .

Arriving to find that all the car hire Paros companies are sold out would be devastating to your trip to Greek Paros. And, since exploring Paros by car is the best way to see the island , you want to make sure you book in advance!

Remember to check if you need an international driver’s permit before booking a car rent Paros Greece.

If you do decide to wait and book a car rental Paros Greece when you get there, you will find a huge concentration of companies around the Paros port. Picking up a car rental at the Paros port, rather than waiting until you get to Naoussa via bus or taxi, is your best option for reaching Naoussa at ease.

Paros ATV Rental

If driving a car in a foreign country is not your jam, or if you like the maneuverability of a smaller transport , then I’d recommend hiring an ATV through DK Scooters ATV Rental Paros . You can find this Paros ATV rental company within a 3-minute walk from the Paros port. They are open weekdays from 9AM-6PM.

If you are already staying in Naoussa, or only want to rent an ATV for a single-day trip, then I recommend Paros on Wheels .

Make sure you have a properly classified driving license specifically for ATV or quad rentals. You will be denied a rental if you don’t have this.  TIP | Negotiate the price ! There’s always a little wiggle room when it comes to prices on the Greek islands, especially if you offer to pay in cash. If you are renting a scooter, don’t pay more than €20 a day in cash.

naoussa greece

Bus Paros + Naoussa

Although I recommend renting a car , ATV or scooter for your time in Paros due to well-maintained roads, you can always board the bus in Paros instead. The bus system services the Naoussa to Parikia route multiple times a day.

The Paros bus schedule will give you the latest times for the bus Naoussa Parikia route.

In general, if you are worried about renting a car, ATV or scooter in a foreign country, you can definitely make due taking the Paros bus from town to town.

The bus runs from main villages such as Parikia, Naoussa, Lefkes, Drios, Aliki, Antiparos Port, and Paros airport. It’s doable, just make sure to plan out your trip based on the bus schedule in advance, if possible.

You can find tickets at the Parikia and Naoussa terminal stations as well as stores and mini markets in Parikia , Naoussa, Lefkes , Prodromos, Marmara, Marpisa, Piso Livadhi, Drios, Aliki, Punda, Voutakos and Antiparos.

Paros bus tickets range from €1.80 to €3.00 based on the route.

naousa paros greece

Private transfer services are plentiful in Paros, just search in Google and you can have your pick of the litter. I will warn you now though, private taxi services are offered at a pretty high price here in Paros, so I’d opt for a car rental or hop on the local bus.

Where to Stay in Paros Naoussa

Think white-washed Cycladic architecture, crystal blue pools, trendy decor , welcome to hotels in Naoussa Paros. Due to its popularity as the little Mykonos of Paros, Naoussa offers many luxury suites and upscale Paros boutique hotels . If you are used to the finer things in life, then a Naoussa hotel Paros is for you.

Don’t be discouraged if you don’t have a whopping budget, though. This stylish village also offers a Paros Naoussa hotel that won’t break the bank, too.

If you are wondering where is the best place to stay in Paros Naoussa, the following list of Paros hotels Naoussa has you covered:

Cove Paros | $$$

Naoussa Beaches Paros

There are two Naoussa Paros beaches to choose from when staying within the stylish village of Naousa: Piperi Beach Paros and Agioi Anargyroi Beach . While these aren’t the most scenic beaches, they are great if you want to spend the day at a Naoussa beach within walking distance.

If you are determined to get the most out of your visit to Naoussa Grece like I was, then I recommend renting a car and making the quick 10-15 minute drive along the coastal roads to a few of the best beaches in Paros:

Santa Maria Beach Paros

paros naoussa

Located a 10-minute drive northeast of Naoussa Paros, you will find the white sand Santa Maria Beach. This is one of the largest and most expansive beaches on all of Paros island, and you can find everything you need here.

Park your car or ATV in the ample dirt parking lot and either take up one of the many lounger and umbrella rentals (€9 a day) or throw a blanket on the soft sand. You can also find a couple of restaurants and beach bars at the southern end of the beach.

The clear blue waters are so inviting, and making the trip to Santa Maria Beach from Naoussa Paros is a breeze. If you are up for something more adventurous, you can try diving with ProDivers Paros .  WHERE | Santa Maria Beach Paros

Lageri Beach Paros

naousa paros

Located on the same peninsula as Santa Maria Beach on northeastern Paros, you will find the secluded Lageri Beach .

A little harder to get to means you won’t run into many other visitors, so if you are looking for quiet , this is the beach for you. Do note, that Lageri (one of the best Paros Beaches Naoussa has to offer) is classified as a nudist beach , but you are welcome either way.

Lageri Beach also doesn’t have much access to amenities , so bring water and snacks with you. Park your car at the Lageri Beach access point , and make the 10-minute walk to the beach. Because a day at the beach equals rest and relaxation, this was definitely my favourite Naoussa Paros beach.

WHERE | Lageri Beach Paros

Monastiri Beach Paros

naoussa greece

A 15-minute drive northwest of the Naoussa Paros island is Monastiri Beach. Tucked into a shallow cove, the Monastiri Beach Bar Paros features a sandy inlet with loungers and umbrella rentals (€25 a day). Due to the shallowness of the cove, you can walk out quite far from the beach. You can even rent a paddleboat to float around the cove.

If you are looking for something truly unique to do nearby Naoussa Village Paros, you can catch a movie at the outdoor cinema located right next to Monastiri Beach. Showings are at 21:30 on select days.

Make sure to take the short walk up to the Monastery of St. John’s of Deti, just above Monastiri Paros for great views of Naoussa Cove and Naoussa Paros Island as a whole.

What to Do in Paros Naoussa

If you are wondering what to do in Naoussa Paros, I got you covered. The absolute best thing to do in Naoussa is simply to roam around the charming whitewashed alleyways and discover all the nooks and crannies of this trendy seaside village.

But if you are staying for more than 1 or 2 nights, then this list of things to do in Naoussa Paros will give you some ideas:

1. Venetian Castle

naousa paros greece

Situated on a thin spit of sand in the centre of Naoussa cove, are the ruins of an ancient Venetian castle. The castle was once built in the 15th century by the Sommaripa dynasty to protect the port from pirate attacks .

Take the narrow cement walkway out to the circular stone foundation and for a unique view of Naoussa Paros island Greece, take a peek through the windows inside the ruins .

Please note, that the narrow seawall used to access the archaeological site can be slippery when wet and take care when those pesky Greek island winds take flight.  WHERE | Venetian Castle in Naoussa Paros

2. Agioi Anargyroi Church

naoussa paros

The Agioi Anargyroi Church sits prominently above the village of Paros Greece Naoussa.

What’s special about the church other than the picturesque exterior with broad staircase , is the view over the trendy seaside town of Naoussa. You can see a good portion of the town, plus great views of the Naoussa cove beyond.  WHERE | Agioi Anargyroi Church in Naousa Paros

3. Moraitis Winery

Moraitis Winery Paros is one of the most famous Greece vineyards on the island. Located an easy 10-minute walk from downtown Naoussa, Moraitis Paros offers Naoussa wine derived from the unique organic Monemvassia and Mandilaria varietals .

You can visit Moraitis winery’s tasting room Monday to Friday between noon and 10 PM.  WHERE | Moraitis Naoussa Winery

5. Dine El Fresco at Sousouro

naousa paros

My absolute favourite restaurant in all of Naoussa Paros, Sousouro is a foodie’s dream and the quaint surroundings don’t hurt either. Take up a seat at one of their cozy tables al fresco , and order yourself a fresh-pressed green juice and avocado toast.

A perfect place for people-watching, socializing or journaling, you name it; Sousouro is not to be missed.

6. Take Photos at Linardo Paros

naoussa greece

Gosh, if you’ve ever been on social media, I’m sure you’ve seen photos of this cute pink and white bar exterior . Located right by the crashing waves of Naoussa cove, Linardo Paros is an Instagrammer’s dream.

For best results, wait to take pictures here until the sun is at its highest in the sky, or during the golden hour before sunset . Besides how photogenic Linardo Naousa Paros is, you can also enjoy an exquisitely made cocktail and watch the sun go down over Naoussa.

Linardo’s is also a great Naoussa attraction to visit along with the Venetian Castle since they are located right next to each other.

7. Monastery of St. John’s of Deti

naousa paros greece

Now, this Naoussa attraction isn’t necessarily in the village of Naoussa per se, but it’s a Paros highlight that can’t be missed. Take the 15-minute drive along the coastal road west in your Paros rental car to the Monastery of St. John’s of Deti.

A great thing to do in combination with a day at Monastiri Beach, the monastery has unparalleled views of Naoussa cove and Naoussa Paros village . Make your way around the front side of the monastery and climb the rocks to the top.

Don’t walk on top of the roof, please! It’s dangerous and frankly disrespectful. Plus, you don’t need to, you can see the same view from the rocks.  WHERE | Monastery of St. John’s of Deti, Naoussa Paros

8. Visit Petra Farms

naoussa greece tourist attractions

Petra Farms is a food producer located just off the road to Monastiri Beach. Focused on the sustainable growth of perennial Mediterranean crops , you can find their products in some of the independent shops in Naoussa’s centre.

The Petra Farms property takes up 24 acres of land on Paros island’s northern coastline and produces crops like capers, oregano, lavender, figs, grapes and olives .

You can arrange a Petra Farm tour and tasting where you will take a 30-minute walk of the land and then take a seat on their balcony overlooking Naoussa bay and taste beautiful food and wine.

Best Naoussa Restaurants Paros

Honestly, you can stay in Naoussa for a week and not eat at a top-quality restaurant twice. Naoussa Paros is known for upscale dining experiences with international cuisine . It’s harder to find authentic Greek tavernas here.

Nevertheless, if you are a foodie like me, you’ll never get bored with the Naoussa restaurant scene. And, if you are into tasting Naoussa wine , most restaurants in Naoussa Paros will offer a nice selection of local varietals.

Here’s my shortlist of the best Naoussa Paros restaurants:

How to Get to Paros by Air + Sea

Paros is located in the Cycladic island group in the Aegean Sea south of mainland Greece and is easily accessible by plane or ferry .

Are you wondering how to get to Paros Greece? Well, it depends on the time and budget you have available. you can choose from flight or ferry. If you are coming from neighbouring Cycladic islands, a ferry is probably your best bet.  Please note that ferry crossing can be cancelled last minute due to strong winds and unpleasant sea conditions. I wouldn’t let this dissuade you from taking the ferry though (this is what I did!), just make sure you have a couple of days buffer in your trip plans.

Ferries to Paros

Travelling by ferry is the main means of transport in the Cycladic islands. I used ferries for my two months spent in Santorini, Mykonos, Milos, Naxos and Paros and can recommend it to you. A ferry to Paros from neighbouring islands is common and plentiful.

Based on your budget, you can choose from multiple ship sailings a day. Speed boats are the most expensive but will get you from island to island quickly. If you would rather be spending your hard-earned money on island experiences, slow ferries are also available.

I used Ferry Hopper for the entirety of my trip in the Cycladic Islands and booking a ferry Paros was no exception.

NOTE | Ferries can be cancelled at the last minute due to inclement weather, so make sure to schedule a couple of days buffer into your Greek Islands trip, just in case.

There are a few different ferry ports offering services from Athens to Paros, but the main and most convenient one is Piraeus. From the city centre of Athens, take the M1 metro to the port of Piraeus .

If you’d like to reach Paros as quickly as possible, the speed ferries Athens to Paros take approximately 3-4 hours. Of course, with the convenience of getting to Paros from Athens quickly, you will pay twice as much as ferry lines like Blue Star ferries Paros.

I used Blue Star via Ferry Hopper for the majority of my ferry crossings in the Greek Islands and can recommend them. A ferry to Paros from Athens via blue star will take 4.5-5 hours.

Ferries From Santorini to Paros

Ferries Santorini to Paros (or Paros to Santorini) are common, especially due to the popularity of Santorini on most people’s Greek islands trip. Depending on what ferry itinerary you choose, you can make it from the Santorini port to Paros port in 2-4 hours, with multiple direct Santorini to Paros ferry options daily.

You can either book your tickets with a local office on Santorini or Paros, or book in advance with Ferry Hopper, which is advisable in the busy months of summer.  NOTE | If you are staying in Oia on Santorini, and you’d like to purchase ferry Santorini Paros tickets, you will have to transport to Fira to purchase locally.

Mykonos to Paros Ferry

Ferries from Mykonos to Paros run multiple times daily during the summer months of the year. Because Mykonos is located a short distance north of Paros, you can take a ferry from Mykonos to Paros in under an hour.

If you are travelling from Mykonos to Paros, remember that the ferry port is located outside of Mykonos Chora and you will need to either take a taxi for the 10-minute journey, or the local shuttle boat that departs from the Chora harbour.

Ferry from Naxos to Paros

You can reach Paros from the neighbouring island of Naxos in as little as 30 minutes via ferries Naxos to Paros on Ferry Hopper . If you opt-out of the more expensive jet boats, you can arrive in Paros from Naxos in less than an hour. The proximity makes it easy to visit Paros on a day trip from Naxos, too.

Ferry Milos to Paros

Milos is located on the far west of the Cycladic island group in Greece. Therefore ferry itineraries between these two islands are not as plentiful.

In the summer months, you may be able to find one or two trips a day, and they may be indirect sailings. The sailings between Milos and Paros are also more expensive, coming in at 70-80 euros each.

Paros Antiparos Ferry

Antiparos is located just off the shores of southwest Paros island. You can only access Antiparos directly through Paros. Make your way from Parikia down to the Port of Pounta to catch the 10-minute ferry across to Antiparos. You can check the Paros to Antiparos ferry schedule for the latest sailing times.  The Paros to Antiparos ferry costs €1.20 per passenger or €6.30 per car.

Greece Travel Planning Guide

► what is the best way to book my greece accommodation.

I always use booking.com for all my accommodations worldwide, and Greece is no exception. I stayed in some really epic places on my adventure around the islands.

For more cozy apartment-style accommodation try VRBO (better and safer than Airbnb).

► What are the best day tours in Greece?

Taking a day tour in Greece is a great way to experience the top attractions and learn from a knowledgeable guide.

I highly recommend these Greece tours:

  • Santorini: Volcanic Islands Cruise with Hot Springs Visit
  • Mykonos: Delos Guided Tour
  • Naxos: Half-Day Cooking Class in Greek Tavern
  • Milos: Kleftiko Caves Cruise with Snorkelling
  • Athens: Acropolis & Ancient Sites Combination Entry

► What is the best ferry website in Greece?

Hands down, Ferry Hopper is the best ferry website in Greece for booking your Greek island connections. This is how I booked all my Cycladic island ferries and can recommend them.

Ferries on Ferry Hopper can connect you from Athens to any island in the Cyclades including Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros and Milos (plus more!).

You can choose from the fast ferry boats or the more economical slow ferry vessels and can compare prices on the website before booking.

► Should I rent a car in Greece?

If you are flying in and out of Athens to see the top sights and don’t plan to leave the city, I don’t recommend renting a car. You can easily get around Athens by walking, taking public transportation, like the underground metro or ride-share services like Uber.

If you are heading to the Greek islands , this is where I would highly, highly (did I say highly?), rent a car in Greece . Islands like Milos, Paros and Naxos are best explored by car hire as the roads are more desolate and attractions are further apart.

I always use and recommend Discover Cars for this. Make sure to book early especially if you plan to visit Greece in the summer! Believe me, they sell out fast.

If you are going to plunk down on a beach for a week in the Greek Cyclades, I wouldn’t bother with a car rental. You can take a taxi or local transportation on the island to the beach destination of your choice (after your ferry trip from Piraeus, of course).

► What is the best site to buy flights to Greece?

For finding cheap flights to and within Greece, I recommend booking through Skyscanner .

► Can you drink tap water in Greece?

Yes! You can drink straight from the tap in Athens , Greece’s capital. Here the water supply is of good quality but may taste of chlorine depending on what area you are staying in.

Some Greek islands will have warnings against drinking tap water, so make sure to bring a self-filtering water bottle with you (LARQ is my fave) instead of resorting to pesky single-use plastic water bottles.

Paros Naoussa

Seaside tables on the promenade of Naoussa in Paros, a heartbeat away from the traditional fishing boats

General information

Naoussa in Paros is a beautiful picturesque fishing village located in a huge bay in the northern part of the island, 10 kilometers east of Parikia - the capital town.  It is considered one of the prettiest villages in the Cyclades . Despite the tourism development, this lovely village has managed to keep its authenticity , traditional character and charm, with its whitewashed and flowered little houses and its tiny churches and chapels, surrounded by labyrinth-like narrow, stone-paved streets.

The lovely village of Naoussa is built around a tiny picturesque port where little colorful fishing boats ( kaikia ) moor. The remains of a Venetian castle can still be seen, creating a unique and enchanting atmosphere. Little taverns and ouzeries  (small Greek taverns serving ouzo and meze ) line up the promenade, adding a traditional charm to the friendly ambiance. At the same time, the main square boasts everything you need in terms of buses and ATM machines .

Although quieter than Parikia, the village hosts several lively bars and nightclubs that stay open until dawn. As one of the liveliest places on the island, Naoussa offers a wide variety of  restaurants , too. When you visit the village, make sure to have lunch or dinner and enjoy freshly made delicacies at one of the best local restaurants . Some of them can be found in a location with great sea views.

From the wildest and more secluded seashores to the fully organized ones, those beaches are ideal for everyone, covering all tastes and needs. All of them can be reached via footpaths, asphalted roads, or by caiques (small fishing boats) from the port.

In addition, the village has many beautiful churches to visit such as the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin , which is located on the highest spot of the village, or the Church of Agios Nikolaos (Saint Nicholas) which houses an impressive Byzantine Museum. The museum houses an exhibition of invaluable 13th-century icons. Some of the town's monuments date back to the Byzantine era. The buses that depart from there take visitors to the main bus station in Parikia Village. From Parikia, visitors should take another bus to reach Naoussa. From Paros Port to Naoussa: The central bus station is located at the main Port of Paros (Parikia). From there, visitors who have arrived by ferry should take a bus to reach Naoussa. Tip: Since buses don’t always stop at every scheduled stop of their itinerary, our advice to visitors is to inform the driver about their final destination in advance.

  • leda_dacanalis 17 Jul 2011 Great location horrible food The spot is what attracts people to this restaurant but when the food arrives you are in for a dissapointment. Everything is overpriced but very very average. So is the service. I've had spectacular eats at other more modest places in the Greek islands at a fraction of the price.
  • oliviatres 03 Apr 2011 Good spot to watch people One of the many restaurants around the port of Naoussa. Good food, kind of more elegant than the usual taverns, but the best is the spot. A good place to watch the people go up and down.
  • agelikoni 26 Oct 2009 Beautiful villages You cannot visit Paros and not even pass by Naoussa. Naoussa is a beautiful village, located on a huge bay, in northern Paros. As you can easily understand from the hundreds of boats at the bay, this is a fishing place. Wherever you go in Naoussa, bay, narrow streets, churches, beach, still this is one of the best places in Paros. While there, you can take a look at the Wine Museum, and if you are visiting Paros in summer, ask the locals about the dates of the fish and wine festival! Very close to Naoussa, there is the Paros Aqua Park. The park is very big and it was a nice surprise to see that they are actually using sea water! I don't remember the ticket fare, but I think it was not that expensive. If you like quiet villages, away from the crowded villages, Lefkes is a small village in the center of the island. Away from the sea, provides a very cozy environment, with Greek traditional coffee shops and taverns.
  • L_Wallace 29 Mar 2009 Sophisticated and vivid Do not have any doubt that Naoussa is the best village on Paros. Parikia, the capital, is also fine but it gets too noisy sometimes. But Naoussa gives another sense: more picturesque, more sophisticated, more vivid with the bars around the small port. I honestly adored this village, it has a secret power to make you feel optimist.
  • Aishling_24 14 Nov 2007 Naoussa was spectacular Village of Naoussa was spectacular, beaches were lovely on the island, nightlife was quite hard to find, didn't find any nightclubs in fact. Aqualand was fantastic. Taxis were not freely avail and to get back to our hotel was always a hassle. So I recommend that you bring your driving licence as we wanted to rent quad bikes but didn't have our licences with us. There was one italian restaurant in Naoussa -can't remember its name but it had the nicest italian food I've ever tasted; there wasn't enough asian food available though.
  • K_Stirling 19 Dec 2006 A clean village near the sea Nationality: Greek Age: 38 -How did you get to Naoussa village: By motorbike -Where is your accommodation located: Santa Maria - Naoussa -How much time did it take you to reach the village: 20 minutes -What are the conditions of the roads that take you to Naoussa village: Good -Did you enjoy the trip to the village: Yes -In order to get to Naoussa village were enough signs in order to find it: Had to ask someone on our way -Why did you choose this Naoussa village: Proposed by our travel agency in Athens -How would you describe the village: Many flowers, clean, by the sea, many churches, restaurants/cafιs, great atmosphere -Can everything, one might need, be found in the village: Telephone, bank, mini market, restaurants, cafes, bars, clubs, shops, travel agencies, hotels and other accommodations - Did the village meet your expectations? Greece consists of thousands of islands, some of the more well-known vacation spots including Santorini and Mykonos. The country’s cuisine is vibrant and rich. Olives are a popular ingredient in many Greek dishes, which makes sense why Greece is the third-largest producer of olives.

Between history, culture, cuisine, and nature, Greece is an undeniably attractive tourist destination you should not miss out on. It’s one of the sunniest places in the world, with plenty of rays for exploring ancient archaeological sites, tanning on white-pebbled beaches, and adventuring to your heart’s content.

To discover the best things to do in this Mediterranean country, use this list of the top tourist attractions in Greece and create your dream itinerary.

A fishing village in the Cyclades on the northeastern section of Paros Island, Naoussa attracts people from all over the world. They came here to admire its white washed buildings and enjoy its beaches for summer vacation.

Naoussa’s dazzling golden beaches, like Kolymbithres Beach and Monastiri, stretch along the natural bay. Many of these beaches, which vary from secluded to crowded, can be accessed on foot. However, some require trips by caiques, small fishing boats, that launch from the local port.

Naoussa is well-known as a summer hotspot but is also famous for its local wine production. It also features impactful historical sites like the Venetian Castle. The castle dates back to the 15th century. It was used to protect the island from pirates and later on as a defensive tower for the Ottomans.

Only two hours from Athens, a trip to Nafplio opens up a world of local history to learn more about. The beautiful town was the first capital of the new Greek state until 1834 before the title was passed on to Athens. Walk down cobblestone alleys of medieval Old Town. Head to the Italianate Syntagma Square at the heart of the city. White Tower of Thessaloniki

Located in northern Greece in Macedonia, the White Tower of Thessaloniki is an iconic historic landmark.

Thessaloniki is Greece’s second-largest city. The ancient city is full of history, having played a vital role in the Byzantine period. The White Tower of Thessaloniki was around during a majority of the city’s historical turning points. It was termed “the Red Tower” and “the Tower of Blood” throughout Ottoman history. This was because of the tower’s role as a prison where brutal torture was enforced.

The monument houses a museum depicting the city’s history. At the top of the White Tower are awe-inspiring viewpoints of the Thermaic Gulf and the city. Outside the tower is the promenade, the popular seaside pedestrian street that routes past the White Tower.

22. Old Town of Rhodes

Old Town of Rhodes

Encircled by medieval walls, the Old Town of Rhodes has been inhabited since medieval times. Along the walls are seven gates, said to enter another world, and walking through them, visitors will find one of the best-preserved fortified cities in Europe.

Rhodes was home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Colossus of Rhodes, a statue of the Greek sun god Helios. Unfortunately, the Colossus of Rhodes was disassembled and sold in AD 654 when the Arabs invaded Rhodes.

The main square, right inside Marina Gate, features a central fountain, cafes, and shops to explore. One of the prominent shopping streets, Sokratous Street, heads off from the square. Next, stroll down the Street of the Knights, a cobblestoned street lamp-lit route outstandingly preserved to relieve the days of medieval knights. Finally, visit Our Lady of the Castle, a Byzantine-style church estimated to have been built in the 11th century.

The museum is only a short drive from the Acropolis archaeological site, where the famous tourist attraction, the Pantheon, sits. The museum features miniature replicas of the Acropolis after each major invasion in Athens, including Roman, Ottoman, and Persian. Continuing on through the Acropolis Museum is the display of the ancient Athenian neighborhood, which was discovered while building the museum.

One of the favorite attractions of the museum is findings from the Parthenon, the historic temple dedicated to the goddess Athena and one of the biggest attractions of Greece. The museum’s third-floor houses artifacts and sculptures from the Parthenon, including original marble inscriptions.

Hydra

One of the Saronic Islands in the Aegean Sea, Hydra, is about a two-hour ferry trip from Athens.

As one of the most popular islands near Athens , the car-free island attracts visitors of all kinds, including famous ones like painters Henry Miller and Leonard Cohen. The island is known for its elegance, history, and it’s main port, surrounded by old churches and 18th-century mansions. Old canon bastions used to defend the island in the Greek War of Independence decorate the port.

The busy harbor is frequented by fishermen heading off to catch a hefty bounty. Some fishermen will use their boats to sell fresh catches after their return. Cats are a standard part of life in Hydra, many of which come to get their morning meal at the harbor.

Just wandering the streets of this enchanting town is one of the most rewarding things to do in Greece. First, have dinner at one of the restaurants for a fresh seafood dish caught locally. Then, stop at a cafe for a quick dessert or refreshing drink.

19. Mount Athos

Mount Athos

Found on the edge of the Athos peninsula in Macedonia, Mount Athos is a holy mountain that has served as an Orthodox spiritual center since 1054. Women and children are forbidden to visit Mount Athos.

Twenty monasteries, including subsidiary establishments, decorate the slopes of Mount Athos. Since Byzantine times, Mount Athos has maintained a self-administered status, with its first constitution signed in 972.

To visit Mount Athos, a permit must be issued. Only ten non-orthodox and 100 Greeks and orthodox visitors are given permits daily, valid for four days. Mount Athos is a well-loved spiritual place where many men come to prioritize spirituality. Arriving at Mount Athos on a permitted visit, one will be overcome by structures that date back centuries on a thousand-year-old site.

Delos

Near Mykonos in the Aegean Sea’s Cyclades archipelago, Delos is the mythological birthplace of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis.

The island is an archaeological site featuring ruins of Doric temples, mosaics, and the famous Terrace of the Lions statue. The only inhabitants of the islands are archaeologists and caretakers of the island. There are no hotels or other stays to spend overnight on Delos. Once a religious center and commercial port, the island was quickly abandoned after several attacks and has stayed that way since 7 BC.

Excavations of Delos began in 1872, some of which continues to this day. A trip to Delos is one of the most popular things to do in Mykonos and offers a leap back in time. The island is an archaeological site dating back to the Archaic and Hellenistic periods.

17. Cape Sounion

Cape Sounion

At the southern point of Attica and the end of the Sounio Peninsula stands the Temple of Poseidon in Cape Sounion.

Built in 5 BC to honor Poseidon, the structure was constructed entirely of white marble. The Temple of Poseidon is a renowned monument of the Golden Age of Athens. The Aegean Sea stretches out on three sides of the temple, and the scenery of the sunset descending into the sea is mesmerizing from this viewpoint.

The Temple of Poseidon had 34 columns. Only fifteen are left standing. If you look closely at one of the columns, you’ll find the name, Lord Byron. The famous poet inscribed his name during a visit to the historic site in 1810.

16. Epidaurus

Epidaurus

Once a small city of ancient Greece, Epidaurus is a famous archaeological site found on the northeastern Peloponnese in Argolis.

One of the biggest tourist attractions of Epidaurus is the Ancient Theatre. The theatre was established in 4 BC to host religious ceremonies honoring the god Asclepius. It was also used to host plays and symposia and as a wrestling arena. This is because of the theatre’s outstanding acoustics and symmetry, which are used to host ancient Greek drama performances in the present day.

Epidaurus acted as a health center in ancient times, referred to as “The Asclepion.” Myths accumulated between the ill that stayed in the Asclepion. That the god Asclepius appeared in dreams and cured their ailments.

15. Portara, Naxos

Portara

The Portara is an iconic landmark on the largest Cyclades islands on the islet of Naxos.

A colossal marble doorway acts as the favored jewel and landmark of Naxos . The construction of the Portara began in 6 BC under the decree of tyrant Lygdamis. However, construction ceased when Lydgamis was overthrown, resulting in only the Portara, or “door,” being built. It was believed that the structure was meant to be a temple dedicated to Apollo, but there is some controversy over its original purpose.

The photogenic marble gateway of the Portara illuminates stunningly, whether it be sunset, sunrise, or at night. Stroll up the cobbled pathway to the Portara and explore the ruins and encompassing sights beheld there.

14. Corfu Old Town

Corfu Old Town

The northernmost of the Ionian Islands, Corfu is found in the Adriatic sea near the western coasts of Albania.

Corfu is loved for its captivating architecture and history, with some buildings dating back to the Venetian period. Within Corfu’s Old Town are cobbled streets, old churches, charming shops, and adorable cafes.

For one-of-a-kind local finds, explore the local shops for clothes, sandals, trinkets, and fun souvenirs to take home. Many churches in Corfu’s Old Town are open to visitors looking to take a peek at the intricate design and architecture or simply to light a candle and say a prayer. Listen to live music as performers show off their talent to the crowds. Finally, get a taste of the local cuisine that fuses Greek and Venetian cuisine with an eastern twist.

13. Knossos Palace

Knossos Palace

The largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete, the Palace of Knossos, is the residence of the mythical King Minos, the son of Europa and Zeus.

Southeast of Heraklion in Crete, the palace symbolized the Minoan civilization. It was used as a political and ceremonial center for the Minoans. The palace was inhabited for a few thousand years until its destruction and the end of the Minoan civilization in 1375 BC.

The original Palace of Knossos, not the reconstructed one after its devastation, was four wings of four-story houses centered around a courtyard. A maze, or labyrinth, connected to the courtyard. In Greek mythology, the maze, or “Labyrinth,” was the home of the Minotaur that battled Athenian hero Theseus.

Combine a palace tour with a trip to the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion. Visit the museum first for a deeper understanding of the Palace of Knossos.

12. Ancient Mycenae

Ancient Mycenae

One of the major centers of Greek civilization, Ancient Mycenae is an ancient city and archaeological site and was a military stronghold that strong-armed the Cyclades, Crete, and southern Greece. The old archaeological site is southwest of Athens and north of Argos in the Peloponnese.

The first to speak the Greek language, the Mycenaens thrived until their eventual downfall around 1200 BC. After that, the Bronze-age acropolis was one of the greats, heavily impacting Greek culture and mythology.

9 Lindos, Rhodes

Lindos

A town on the island of Rhodes, Lindos preserves Greece’s second most visited archaeological site.

The legend goes that Danaus, the son of the King of Egypt, founded Lindos. Greek mythology believes that when Danaus fled his brother and Hera, he resided on the island before moving to Greece’s mainland.

The Acropolis of Lindos can be seen from every viewpoint in the town. On the first level of the acropolis is a Byzantine church of St. John established around the 13th century. There is also a big Hellenistic stoa and the remains of a temple. On the top of the stairs are the ruins of the Temple of Athena Lindia, a 4 BC sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Athena.

Visit the ancient theatre of Lindos, dating back to 4 BC. The historic amphitheater was used for festivals, plays, and athletic competitions. Admire the Church of Panagia, an elaborately designed chapel with a Rhodian campanile tower and hanging chandeliers.

Delphi

An ancient town in Phocis, Delphi rests between the Phaidriades Rocks of Mount Parnassus.

A major religious center in the 6th century BC, the Panhellenic sanctuary of the god Apollo lies in Delphi. It was the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia, translating to “Athena who is before the temple (of Apollo).” Visitors would first see the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia, then reach the sanctuary of Apollo.

Archaeological finds discovered Mycenaean remains, showing the area was inhabited in 2 BC. The sanctuary was established in 8 BC, its influence extending over Greece. Pilgrims came to Delphi to meet the priestess of Pythia and the Oracle of Delphi, which was widely known for divining the future. Delphi was once home to the Pythian Games, second to the Olympics for Greeks, to honor Apollo.

Now, visitors to Delphi can tour the archaeological sites of these historic religious sanctuaries. Other noteworthy artifacts and educational information can be found at the nearby museum.

Mystras

Referred to as Myzithras in the Chronicle of the Morea, Mystras is a historic town in the southeast of Peloponnese near ancient Sparta.

The settlement of Mystras began in 1249 with the construction of an amphitheater surrounding a fortress overlooking Sparta. However, after multiple attacks and occupations, by the Byzantines, Turks, then Venetians, Mystras was soon abandoned in 1832 with only ruins left behind.

The well-preserved archaeological sites feature Byzantine churches, fortress walls, and palace remains to peer over. The site is split between three sections—the fortress on the summit, the upper town, and the lower town.

Built by the Franks and preserved by the Turks, the fortress is historically outstanding, with stunning scenic opportunities from atop the hill. Within the upper and lower town sections are cobblestone streets worn down after centuries of use and numerous structures dating back to the 12th century.

I spent 4 days in Athens, Greece. Here are 10 things that were worth it and 5 I'd skip next time.

  • I recently spent four days in Athens, Greece, while traveling around Europe .
  • Stumbling upon the National Garden was a great treat, and I loved learning about the Acropolis.
  • On the other hand, I'm not sure the Roman Agora or Hadrian's Library are worth a visit .

Insider Today

In October, I traveled to Athens, Greece , for the first time since I was 18 months old.

I spent four days exploring some of the city's amazing landmarks and sites. But even though I didn't pay for all of the attractions — because some are free for EU citizens 25 and under — there are a few I wouldn't spend time on again.

The Greek city just made Delta Air Line's list of most-searched summer destinations for 2024, so if you're currently planning a trip, here's everything that was worth the time and money and the few things I'd skip on my next trip.

I was glad I happened upon Athens National Garden.

naoussa greece tourist attractions

I happened upon the National Garden kind of by accident when I was looking for some green space to run in. It's completely free and perfect for a walk, jog, or run.

The space is very peaceful and also has ponds with lots of turtles. I ended up going back a few days later to sit and read in the shade.

The Acropolis is definitely worth it, especially in the morning.

naoussa greece tourist attractions

The Acropolis, which I'd consider the main tourist attraction in Athens, is a must-visit.

The citadel contains several ancient buildings, most notably the Parthenon. I was told to start waiting in line around 7:30 a.m. (it opens at 8), and it was well worth the time and effort.

It got busy — and hot — really quickly. I couldn't imagine going any later, and I ended up being able to take a nap afterward anyway.

I wasn't too sure about Mount Lycabettus, but the views won me over.

naoussa greece tourist attractions

I planned to go to Mount Lycabettus (the highest point in Athens) for sunset one night. I thought I'd allotted enough time, but everyone seemed to have the same idea since there was a huge line when I arrived.

Truthfully, I was a bit disappointed by the tram ride, and when I got to the top, I was overwhelmed by how many people there were. But the view made it worth it.

I ended up staying for dinner and had a delicious meal of Greek salad , moussaka, and white wine for about $16.

I'm so glad I paid to run along the track at Panathenaic Stadium.

naoussa greece tourist attractions

The stadium is cool on its own — it dates back to 600 BC and is the only marble stadium in the world. But I went early in the morning, during the designated running hours of 7:30 to 9 a.m., and got to run around the track.

It's only about $10 to enter (I paid the student price of $5), and it was one of my favorite things I did on the trip.

Kerameikos Archaeological Site is one of the coolest cemeteries I've ever seen.

naoussa greece tourist attractions

I had pretty low expectations going in having seen my fair share of cemeteries , but I was pleasantly surprised by this one.

The tombstones were pillar-shaped, and there were great views of the Parthenon.

If you're doing the Acropolis, make sure to swing through Plaka afterward.

naoussa greece tourist attractions

It's worth walking around the neighborhood surrounding the Acropolis.

There are great taverns with traditional Greek food and places to buy all the souvenirs your heart desires. I really enjoyed wandering around and exploring some of the picturesque side streets.

Even after seeing the real deal, I got a lot out of the Acropolis Museum.

naoussa greece tourist attractions

I'm not usually a big museum person, but the Acropolis Museum is definitely worth a visit.

I went after I'd already seen the landmark, and it gave me good context. It houses many artifacts that were excavated from the site, and beneath the museum is an in-progress excavation of ancient Athens.

Areopagus Hill provided stunning views for free.

naoussa greece tourist attractions

Behind the Acropolis is a prominent rock outcropping. It can be a slippery and steep walk up, but the views of the Acropolis and the surrounding area are breathtaking.

Entrance to the hill and its surrounding park is also completely free.

I could feel the history at the Ancient Agora of Athens.

naoussa greece tourist attractions

The Athenian Agora is one of the best-known examples of a traditional Greek meeting place. It had great views of the Acropolis and was beautifully adorned with trees and other ruins.

I was especially impressed by how well the Temple of Hephaestus was preserved. There's also a museum, and the second floor has a nice balcony where you can look out over the agora

I'm glad I swung by the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

naoussa greece tourist attractions

Many of the attractions in Athens date back centuries, but the tomb is much more contemporary.

Dedicated to Greek soldiers killed in war, the tomb itself is visually quite simple. But there are guards that stand in traditional garb, which reminded me of Buckingham Palace .

It's also pretty central — right next to the National Garden — so I didn't have to go out of the way to see it.

Next time, I'd skip Monastiraki Flea Market and shop in Plaka instead.

naoussa greece tourist attractions

I was excited to go to a flea market but was quite disappointed to find that this one didn't sell anything much different than the rows of stores in Plaka.

I will say that the square near the market had good views of the Parthenon, but I was able to see similar angles from other places in the city.

After seeing the Athenian Agora, I'd skip the Roman Agora on future trips.

naoussa greece tourist attractions

In contrast to the Athenian Agora, the Roman version wasn't much to write home about.

The gate at the front is kind of cool, but I think could just look from the outside instead of wasting time going in.

Hadrian's Library didn't wow me.

naoussa greece tourist attractions

I didn't find the "library" all that special.

The ruin isn't really a building, just pillars. And like the Roman Agora, you could easily just peek through the gates to get a good sense of the place.

I wanted to love the Temple of Zeus, but I was a little underwhelmed.

naoussa greece tourist attractions

I was excited to see a temple devoted to the King of the Gods, but it was kind of disappointing.

To be fair, the temple was under construction when I went. But I felt that there wasn't a ton to look at regardless.

The Lyceum of Aristotle isn't all that exciting and it's far from everything else.

naoussa greece tourist attractions

The original lyceum was destroyed. All that's left of it is a few ruins that were discovered about 30 years ago.

It's relatively new since it wasn't opened to the public until 2009, but I felt like it wasn't worth the walk since it was far from most of the other landmarks .
