Katie Sarah

Aussie mum becomes first woman to complete death-defying mountaineering feat.

In 2007 Katie came to within 400m of the summit of Mount Everest on her first ever high-altitude climb.

A successful summit was prevented partly by a badly healed broken ankle.

After gaining more climbing experience, she returned to Mt Everest in 2010. This was a successful bid, becoming the first South Australian (and sixth Australian) woman to summit Everest.

In 2013 Katie completed the 7 summits, successful climbs of each of the highest peaks on each continent.

In January 2018 Katie completed the 7 volcanic summits, with a summit of Mt Sidley in Antarctica.

She is the only female in the world, and one of only less than 10 people ever, to have completed both the 7 summits and 7 volcanic summits.

Katie has several tertiary qualifications including a Bachelor of Business in Finance, a Masters in Accounting and is a Graduate of the AICD.

She owns and manages Sarah Mountain Journeys Pty Ltd, is married and has three teenage sons.

Katie is also a Board Member of a not for profit organization, Holiday Explorers, and is a regular volunteer and supporter of the Leukemia Foundation.

She joins us today to share what’s been happening since she gave her first public address, to our Club soon after her first attempt at Everest.

Katie Sarah is a trailblazing adventurer and businesswoman, owning Sarah Mountain Journeys Pty Ltd in Adelaide.

Her diverse career spans technical, sales, and managerial roles in national organizations and family businesses.

Katie's first high-altitude climb was in Bolivia in 2006, leading to summits of Mt Himlung, Mt Vinson, and Everest.

By 2013, she completed the Seven Summits, and by 2018, the Seven Volcanic Summits.

Katie aims to achieve the Explorers’ Grand Slam. In 2023/24, she circumnavigated the globe aboard Outlaw, rounding Cape Horn.

Mountaineering and the Volcanic Seven Summits

Updated list of Volcanic Seven Summit completers

As I mentioned in my recent post , there have been two more completions of the Volcanic Seven Summits.  The list below reflects these.

This post is an update to my posts of 9th November 2016 and 28th June 2017 .

These completions have been achieved by Katie Sarah, an Australian guide based in Adelaide who runs Sarah Mountain Journeys, and well known UK guide David Hamilton who runs High Adventure and regularly works with both Jagged Globe and ALE.  Links to their websites are in the list.

In addition, further research indicates that the French guide and photographer, François Bernard, has also completed the Volcanic Seven Summits.

Mario Trimeri, François Bernard and David Hamilton have also completed the seven continental summits (Carstenz version).

Andrey Filkov and Katie Sarah have completed the seven continental summits (Kosciuszko version).

Aleks Abramov, Vitaliy Simonovic and Dan Bull have completed the seven continental summits (both Carstenz and Kosciuszko versions).

I would be interested to hear from anyone who is aware of any person looking to achieve this challenge.  Ted Fairhurst who only has Ojos del Salado to do is presently in Chile having to deal with poor weather in order to complete the challenge.

My friend Satyarup Siddhanta has completed both the versions of 7 summits. He has recently completed Mt Giluwe and is two volcanic summits away from completing the prestigious holder of 7 summits as well as 7 volcanic summits. The remaining are Pico de Orizaba & Mt Sidley. He has also completed skiing the last degree in South Pole. Let me know how I can connect with you to provide more details. If Satyarup sticks to his plan, he’ll be the youngest in the world to have completed both seven summits and seven volcanic summits. Currently this is held by Daniel Bull.

Sarah's Journey

Once upon a time in a bustling city, there lived a young woman named Sarah. Sarah had always been full of dreams and ambitions, eager to make a difference in the world. She worked hard in her career, excelled in her studies, and was known for her kindness and generosity.

However, one day, tragedy struck Sarah's life. She lost her beloved parents in a car accident, leaving her heartbroken and lost. The pain of the loss seemed unbearable, and Sarah struggled to find meaning in her once vibrant life.

In her darkest moments, Sarah turned to the scriptures for comfort and guidance. She found solace in Psalm 34:18, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit," and in Isaiah 41:10, "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

Through prayer and reflection on God's Word, Sarah began to see her loss in a new light. She realized that her parents' legacy of love and faith lived on in her, and that she had a purpose to fulfill even in the midst of grief.

Driven by a newfound sense of purpose, Sarah started volunteering at a local shelter for the homeless. She poured her heart into helping those in need, listening to their stories, and offering them hope and encouragement.

As Sarah immersed herself in serving others, she experienced a transformation within herself. Her grief slowly turned into compassion, and her sense of loss was replaced by a deep gratitude for the time she had with her parents and the opportunity to make a positive impact in the world.

Through her journey of finding purpose and meaning in life, Sarah learned the truth of Romans 8:28, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." She found comfort and strength in knowing that even in the midst of pain and loss, God had a plan for her life, and that every experience, joyful or sorrowful, could be used for His glory.

Fifty years ago, I committed my life to serving the Lord. I hold an associate degree in Christian Education and a bachelor’s degree in Christian Counseling. I live by 1 Corinthians 9:16, and Ephesians 3:7-8. In my retirement, I focus on studying and sharing the teachings of God’s Word with others. Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Prince William Responds After Being Asked About Kate Middleton’s Health Amid Cancer Treatment

Prince william provided insight into how kate middleton has been doing as she continues her cancer battle privately during the 80th anniversary of the d-day landings june 5..

Prince William is giving a new update on Kate Middleton .

As the Princess of Wales continues her cancer treatment out of the spotlight, William shared how her health journey has been going.

While visiting veterans at the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings in Portsmouth June 5, the Prince of Wales explained that Kate was getting better and added, "She'd have loved to be here today."

"I was reminding everyone her grandmother served at Bletchley Park," he continued in a video shared to  video on X  (formerly known as Twitter) June 5. "So, she had quite a few in common with some of the ladies here who were at Bletchley." (Kate's paternal grandmother Valerie Glassborrow worked at the historic World War II spy base, where Alan Turing would crack the Enigma code that was used by Nazis to encrypt covert messages.)

And it seems William—who shares kids Prince George , 10, Princess Charlotte , 9, and Prince Louis , 6, with Kate—will continue attending events solo as the 42-year-old focuses on her health. In fact, she will be absent from the Colonel's Review ahead of the Trooping the Colour Ceremony on June 8.

"This year General James Bucknall K.C.B., C.V.O will carry out the role of Inspecting Officer," a Kensington Palace spokesperson told NBC News May 30, "on behalf of HRH The Princess of Wales at Colonel's Review as she continues her recovery."

While Kate has chosen to battle the disease privately, William assured the public that she and the kids are staying positive .

"All doing well, thank you," the 41-year-old shared, per The Daily Mail  back in April. "We're all doing well."

As for Kate, she highlighted how supportive William has been since she stepped back from her royal duties in March to focus on her health.

"It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family," she said in her video message . "Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance."

Kate Middleton Shares Chemotherapy Update

Nearly three months after sharing her cancer diagnosis, the Princess of Wales said that she's "making good progress" with chemotherapy , though there are  "good days and bad days" amid her health journey .

"On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting," Kate wrote on Instagram June 14 . "But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well."

She added, "My treatment is ongoing and will be for a few more months. On the days I feel well enough, it is a joy to engage with school life, spend personal time on the things that give me energy and positivity, as well as starting to do a little work from home."

In a March 22 video message, the Princess of Wales shared that she'd been diagnosed with cancer after undergoing abdominal surgery in January.

"It was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful," she said before noting that tests after the operation found cancer had been present. "My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment."

Dolly Parton to spotlight her family in new album and docuseries 'Smoky Mountain DNA'

On nov. 15, 2024, parton will release the album "dolly parton & family: smoky mountain dna – family, faith & fables.".

Dolly Parton 's desire to fully embrace her family's roots amid her now perpetual place in the global spotlight has reached a new level.

Via a partnership between Dollywood and Parton's co-owned Owepar Entertainment, on Nov. 15, 2024, the "Coat of Many Colors" vocalist will release the album "Dolly Parton & Family: Smoky Mountain DNA – Family, Faith & Fables."

The release will create a musical lineage from the Parton family's roots in the United Kingdom in the 1600s to their home in Appalachia's Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee.

The project will be available on vinyl and CD and via digital download and streaming. A four-part docuseries to accompany the album is also in production.

Parton's cousin, Richie Owens, produced an album featuring generations of her immediate and extended family (including those who have passed away) performing songs important to the Parton family legacy from the UK to present-day East Tennessee. Of note, particular focus is given to the Reverend Jake Owens, Parton's grandfather, who, as a press release notes, "instilled in her and her relatives a profound respect for faith, a deep love of music and storytelling, and strong enduring family values."

For the attached docuseries, performances of the songs — featuring Parton and her relatives — were filmed at Knoxville's Bijou Theater.
