Back in the mid-to-late 1980s, the CEO of Alabama’s state employee pension fund—Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA)—hatched an outlandish plan to build multiple golf courses simultaneously throughout the state, a state never before regarded as a golf destination. Nothing like it had ever been conceived, let alone attempted, but this man hoped to attract golf tourists and stimulate economic activity. Absurd, right?

A graduate of Minnesota State University, Mankato where he earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, and later taught business and finance courses, Dr. David Bronner also attended the University of Alabama where he received a law degree in 1971, and a Ph.D. the following year. He then taught more business, finance, and education courses at various graduate schools before becoming Assistant Dean of the Law School at UA. In 1973, at the age of 28, he was given the top job at RSA.

With that level of education, and those qualifications and academic/real life experience, perhaps Bronner could be trusted, and his somewhat wild and unconventional proposal for a golf trail might not be so crazy after all.

Now, a quarter of a century later, with a total of eleven sites and 468 holes  and eight major resorts, half a million rounds a year are played on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, and RSA’s assets have grown from about $8 billion to over $35 billion—credit for which doesn’t go to the Trail entirely, but it remains by far the most conspicuous and ambitious of Bronner’s investments.

How to Tackle the Trail

There probably are people—mad golf addicts—that have played all 26 courses in one trip. Such a voyage would mean roughly 85 miles of golf, and over 700 miles of driving, however, so it’s probably best to do it in chunks.

I’ve visited six Trail sites on three separate trips—Ross Bridge in Hoover in 2010 when I played the back tees from 8,191 yards and had no fun at all (Director of Golf Chip Purser told me no one had been “stupid enough” to play all 18 from the tips); Magnolia Grove and Lakewood outside Mobile in 2014; and Hampton Cove, The Shoals, and Silver Lakes in the northern third of the state just a few weeks ago.

Jones has never been my architectural cup of tea, but I have to say I’ve enjoyed every Trail course I’ve visited, even Ross Bridge which is no doubt a beautiful place and probably good fun when played from a more suitable set of tees. With the mighty Tennessee River to the right and the plantation-style clubhouse high above the green, the par-three 18 th on the Fighting Joe Course at The Shoals is probably the prettiest hole I’ve ever seen. And, despite the ominous names, the Heartbreaker and Mindbreaker nines at Silver Lakes probably possess my favorite Trail holes. At first light on a sunny day, the place is really rather delightful.

The most you’ll pay for a round on the Trail is the $142 (including cart) it costs to play Ross Bridge—considered the Trail’s flagship facility—before 10:30 am during Fall and Winter. But the typical price for 18 holes with cart on the majority of Trail courses is less than $90. Annual memberships are available and start at $1,500, and Trail Card ($40) members get discounts of up to 50% on green fees—the only problem being you have to be an Alabama resident, or live within 100 miles of a Trail course, to qualify.

History of the RTJ Trail

Bronner hired Robert Vaughn, a former Director of Golf at Tanglewood Golf Club in Clemmons, N.C. to expand the idea and put together a design team. Vaughn also set up Sunbelt Golf Corporation to manage the courses, and worked hard on selling the idea to municipalities, corporations, and private developers in order to secure donations of prime land within easy driving distance of the state’s major highway system.

To design the holes, Bronner and Vaughn chose Robert Trent Jones who had worked on 500+ courses during a 50-year career. Then well into his 80s, Jones had more or less retired, and what little work he was doing was mostly overseas.

But Bronner knew the value of Jones’s name. This was five years before Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw built Sand Hills; a decade before David Kidd’s Bandon Dunes opened and American golfers got to experience the beauty of links golf at home; long before Tom Doak’s minimalist movement started trending; and 20 years before firm/fast/natural/strategic/Golden Age-inspired openings almost became routine. During the 1960s and 70s, Jones had been the most prominent figure in the industry, and though Jack Nicklaus, Pete Dye, Tom Fazio, and his own two sons‚ Robert and Rees, had supplanted him by the end of the 1980s, Bronner still considered him the ideal man for his trail, and somehow managed to coax him back to work.

During design and construction of the courses, Jones relied heavily on his young associate Roger Rulewich, who graduated from Yale in 1958 with a degree in civil engineering. Rulewich learned everything he knew about golf from Jones, and the holes he built were clearly inspired by his mentor. Classic Jones course characteristics such as big, contoured greens, a large front bunker, plenty of water, and at least one “signature hole” were evident throughout the Trail whose first four sites—Hampton Cove in the north of the state, Magnolia Grove in the southwest, Oxmoor Valley in the middle, and Grand National in the east—opened in 1992.

Alabama’s RTJ Golf Trail has been acclaimed since it opened 25 years ago, and deservedly so. There are better courses in the Yellowhammer State, but few would deny the Trail was an inspired (if slightly wacky) idea, has made a considerable contribution to the wealth and identity of the state, and really is a magnificent achievement.

Grand National, a Robert Trent Jones (RTJ) Trail course, near Auburn/Opelika offers three 18-hole layouts, the Lake, Links and Short Courses.  I played the Lake course.  It was the home of the PGA Tour’s Barbasol Championship from 2015 to 2017, an event held opposite the British Open. Grand National, by all reports, was the single greatest site for a golf complex Robert Trent Jones, Sr. had ever seen. It was the first course opened on The Trail in 1992.

Built on 600-acre Lake Saugahatchee, 32 of the 54 holes drape along its filigreed shores. Both the Links course and the Lake course were in the top 10 of Golf Digest’s list of “America’s Top 50 Affordable Courses”. They list all three courses at Grand National among the nation’s 40 Super Value courses by Golf Digest’s  “Places to Play”.

With 12 holes hugging the shore, Grand National’s Lake Course has a quartet of par threes as good as you’ll find anywhere.  The Links course has no weaknesses. The eighteenth is the strongest finishing holes in the RTJ Trail.   The Short Course has half its holes hugging Lake Saugahatchee and is one of the best in the nation.

Alabama’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is an assortment of 486 holes of championship golf  over 27 courses on 11 sites across Alabama.  Eight Resort Collection hotels on the Trail are Marriott or Renaissance properties.  The New York Times called the Trail “Some of the Best Public Golf on Earth”.  Dr. David Bronner, CEO of the Retirement Systems of Alabama, had a dream. Invest pension funds and build 26 world class golf courses that would challenge people enough that “they would want to come back and try again”.  He lured the legendary Robert Trent Jones, Sr. out of retirement and the rest is history.  The development of The Trail moved more dirt than the Panama Canal.

It astonished me to learn he opened eighteen courses in two years (1992-1993).  They added three more courses in 1999.  The final six courses opened between 2004-2005.  Bronner thought the courses would attract tourism to Alabama.  He was correct.  I ventured to Alabama to play quality public golf because of The RTJ Trail reputation.

The practice area is all grass.  No mats here.

The Lake Course

Part of this course is open with gentle mounds, many water areas and tall grassy areas.  There is a reason they call this the Lake Course. On seven holes Lake Saugahatchee comes into play.  Other parts of the course are tree lined with fairways that look smaller than reality. Grass is Bermuda. They place fairway bunkers to be a nuisance on most holes.  Bunkers and penalty areas are occasionally not visible from the teeing area. Bunkers often narrow the landing areas.   Check yard landing area yardages.  This is not a course that demands or rewards driver on every tee.  That’s a good reason to get a yardage book from the pro shop. Some greens jut into the water provide pleasant scenery while providing exciting approach shot opportunities.  Greens are large, gently rolling and usually multi-tiered. I also noticed a profusion of multicolored Fox squirrels darting in and out from the trees.

Hole Highlights

Hole 1 – Par4 364 yards.  The first hole is memorable and an unusual dogleg left.  Players start with a tee shot of only 170-200 yards to a landing area preceding a large bunker that bisects the fairway. A double tiered green guarded by water challenges the approach.

Hole 12 – Par5 493 yards.  For big hitters who can cut off a larger part of the water on the tee shot and clear the fairway bunker, this hole is reachable in two.  A tree impedes that goal if the player does not clear the water by enough margin.

Hole 15 – Par3. Back Tees 230 yards, Orange Tees 182 yards.  Playing to an island green, it’s all carry over water.  This may be the most scenic hole in the entire RTJ Trail.

Playing the Grand National Lake Course is a great depiction of the RTJ Trail.  It’s no shock that the PGA Tour played here for three years. And, it’s a remarkable value.

4 reasons the rtj golf trail should be your next golf trip.

There is no other golf destination like it. The RTJ Trail in Alabama spans hundreds of miles. Only Myrtle Beach comes close in terms of top-to-bottom distance. The RTJ Trail courses were built concurrently. St. Andrews took hundreds of years, while Bandon took 2 decades. While Pinehurst unites three communities, the RTJ Trail unifies an entire state in golf.

And yet, the RTJ Trail bears elements that make each of those other destinations a success. It has the diversity of courses found along the Grand Strand, if not the variety of architects. RTJ offers variety of terrain and shot value, if not the native sands of North Carolina, the Oregon coast and Scotland. Most important, the RTJ Trail offers many reasons to return, all thanks to the range of venues where courses are located. Let’s have a look at 4 reasons to make Alabama’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail your next destination venture.

1) Sites and Scorecards

The first thing your eyes catch, even if you read from left to right, are the numbers on the official Trail web site: 468 holes, 26 courses, 11 sites. If you’ve ever gone on a trip where you change hotels and locales with the sun, you understand how frustrating and exhausting such poor planning is. I know from personal experience: I planned a trip to Michigan that way, and it ended with a near-fistfight! Only one of the 11 sites (Ross Bridge) has just 18 holes, but it’s a mere 5-minute car ride from the 54 holes at Oxmoor Valley. With the exception of the 36-hole Highland Oaks property, in the southeastern corner of the state, each site is within an hour drive of another. In the case of Highland Oaks, no southern Iditarod is necessary. Both Grand National (Auburn/Opelika) and Cambrian Ridge (Greenville) are 2 hours away.

A fact not emblazoned across the crest of the trail, each of the sites for golf courses was donated to the Retirement Systems of Alabama, the entity responsible for the massive undertaking. One might suspect that the lands acquired would be less than ideal for golf, but that’s not the case. The rumpled geography (including climate and weather, in addition to topography) of the state ensured an assortment of characteristics. Some layouts sit high above rivers and small lakes, while others traverse hillsides. Others still, abut the gulf of Mexico. In each case, the land offered was either viable in its current condition, or manipulable with minimal earth-moving.

2) Diverse Layouts

I’m the first to step forth and say that there was a lot about Roger Rulewich’s approach to golf course architecture that I dislike. I found his Ballyowen in New Jersey to be nearly unplayable. Perhaps it was the pretense of an Irish golf course, that in no way, shape or form looked like, felt like, played like, an Irish golf course. I wasn’t a fan of Saratoga National, either, as it seemed to base itself on ways to disrupt golf with water. It’s known that Rulewich was the driving force behind the RTJ Trail. Mr. Jones, Sr., was up in years when the trail was build: he passed away in 2000, 6 days short of his 94th birthday. As his lieutenant, Rulewich oversaw much of design and construction. AND he did a great job. Our trip took us from Prattsville to Birmingham, to Auburn/Opelika. None of the courses felt remotely like a copy or twin of any other. I will warn you that the Links course at Grand National (Auburn/Opelika) is actually more  lakes  than the adjacent Lakes course, but that’s nothing. Both courses and the 18-hole, par-three layout on site are a barrel of fun.

Let me tell you what it’s like to play an 8200-yard course. The Ross Bridge course near Birmingham is a delight for the senses. Up and down wondrous land, bagpiper playing as your come to 9 or 18, vistas across adjoining fairways, extending for acres. Back to the challenge. For transparency, I’m a 52-year old, 5’9″ guy with above-average fitness and golf ability (I’m fairly strong, very good hand-eye coordination and a traveling 5 handicap), so base your personalization of this experience off that. Now, here is the paradigm: everything in your mind shifts. Your shortest par-3 hole is 250 yards, and most of them require a 235-yard carry over doom. Your par-4 holes live in the rarefied air above 480 yards, unless they are uphill and only 450. As for the par-5 holes, I almost parred one of them. I hit more solid shots on this golf course than I can describe, and I did not make a single par. I had plenty of chances at par, but couldn’t get the putts to fall. Zero greens in regulation meant zero birdie putts. No chip-ins, either. Are you begging the question “Why did you do it?” Imagine the ultra-marathoner and the challenge that she faces in running way more than 26 miles. I wanted the experience. I wasn’t interested in a score. No one but you cares what you shot on your trip; they only ask about the experience. For me, the experience was brought to fruition at 8200 yards.

We had the opportunity to play two  short courses. Long before par-3 courses became the rage at Bandon Dunes and other locales, the RTJ Trail incorporated them into their sites. Their reasoning, based on logic, was that golfers might not be up for 36 challenging holes in a day, but they might like a warm-up 18, or a day-ender. Hence, the open-arms approach to the short course. The day we played the 8200 yard course at Ross Bridge, we warmed up at Oxmoor Valley’s wee links. I use the term  warm up with intent; the morning was a chilly, windy one on the ridge, but when we descended into the valley, the wind abated. The vertical topography demands that holes play either up or down a slope. The other reason for the term is, you will use nearly every club in your bag. No need to go to the range before a round at Oxmoor or Ross Bridge. Play the short course early and you’ll be ready for 18 holes in no time.

Our other venture onto a less-than-regulation layout was at Grand National. Home to the aforementioned pair of regulation courses (Lakes and Links), Rulewich and Jones found a way to weave the short course onto the same land as the big fellows. No perimeter wasteland here, no use of unneeded land for a throwaway course. The shortie at Grand National is just the thing to end a day, which is what we did when we pulled into town. Knowing that we had 36 big holes the following morning, we opted for brief and exciting, and Grand National Short offered both. Oh, if you’re wondering, the Lakes and Links courses provide the same memories, challenges and thrills. Former home to the PGA Tour’s Barbasol Championship, if I had to pick one resort to which to return, it would be hard to say no to Grand National.

3) Nearby Towns

It’s a 360 mile drive from Huntsville (in the north) to Point Clear (in the south), the longest distance between sites. Not far behind is the 340-mile trek from Muscle Shoals (also in the north) to Point Clear. That’s a lot of state, and to imagine 9 other sites and almost 400  other holes in between, is nearly preposterous. Fortunately, the Trail lives in harmony with its state. Unlike some resorts that strive to keep you on site, gypping the local businesses of needed cash and awareness, courses along the trail encourage you to visit places like Opelika, Prattville and Point Clear. The  esprit de corps of an entire state is on display at every stop along the trail.

Case in point: Opelika . No need to ride-share from the resort. One of the drivers will take you into town, and pick you up at the pre-arranged hour. No charge for the ride, but don’t forget to tip the chauffeur. We took a 10-minute ride into town, expecting only dinner. What we found was a delightful, reclaimed downtown. Once home to factories and a busy train trestle, this pleasant area is now home to restaurants, breweries, distilleries and benches. What better place to be, after a round or two of golf, than an urban space with a place to dine, quaff, and relax? If you’re in the area in the fall, there’s another town nearby, called Auburn. Rumor is, they play a bit of football over there.

You’ll find an Opelika nearly everywhere you go along the trail. Each has its own flavor to savor, and offers the perfect complement to hard-fought battles on the links. As much as I want to return to see the other courses along the trail, I also want to visit the Yellowhammer state again for its small towns.

It might seem odd to return to the importance of lodging, immediately after I’ve suggested you take a tour of the towns that house the Trail venues. There are times aplenty when you don’t want to go out after 36 holes. You want to lay down in a comfortable bed for a few hours, have a nice dinner on site, and watch a game or two on television, in the tavern. The majority of the properties have on-site lodging, allowing you to roll out of the golf cart and into  your room. It’s time for a dip in the pool or hot tub, followed by a beverage at the outdoor bar. Or, a quick shower and nap, then down to the grill room for some vittles.

Oh, the room. Let’s not forget the beds that make you feel like you’re sleeping on air cushions, the sitting rooms that allow friends to gather for television or conversation, nor the windows that look out, more often than not, onto the golf courses themselves. If it weren’t for the golf, you’d be forgiven for spending as much time as possible in the suite! Ironically, the one resort where we had to stay off-site was the one we most wanted to see. The Ross Bridge clubhouse and lodge, a Marriott property, was completely booked by a company for a retreat. No rooms were available, and you couldn’t go inside at the turn or the 19th hole, except to visit the pro shop. It’s understandable why that company, and others like it, would want to seclude its employees for training purposes. With gentle waterfalls, distant vistas and multiple dining options, Ross Bridge might be the premier property along the entire Robert Trent Jones golf trail.

Concluding Thoughts

–The best place to fly into is Atlanta. The drive is not too distant, and is entirely interstate. You even gain an hour when entering Alabama. What’s more, with Atlanta being a hub for so many airlines, chances are excellent that travel costs will be reduced;

–Our visit included the middle row of courses, from top to bottom. We saw some of Oxmoor Valley, and all of Ross Bridge, Capitol Hill and Grand National. A second visit would be the northern trio of The Shoals, Hampton Cove and Silver Lakes, where 6 regulation and 1 short course await. Visit #3 would take on the southern tier, the most ambitious of the trips. Four sites, offering 8 full-size and 1 short course, sit in anticipation of our arrival. After that, a 4th trip would select the favorite properties. Interstates and beltways move travelers from each corner and every perimeter, in appropriate amounts of time;

–As with any golf getaway, do your homework and know what to expect from the weather. My threesome assumed (typical northerners) that anything south of us would be balmy, steamy and sunny. It certainly was more enjoyable than upstate New York in March, but had we packed properly, we would have muttered less. Alabama is a beautiful state, and the positioning of the RTJ Trail golf courses throughout, ensures that visitors will experience and enjoy something new, no matter which corners of the state they visit.

What an interesting course. The other two on property spend a good bit of time below the ridge, but Senator is always on top, always out of the trees, exposed to the elements. I didn’t ask, but I hope that they allow it to play firm and fast always. The ground game is often sorely missed here in the USA.

Prattville and Grand National were two of my home sites for years. Unbeatable quality of golf for the money just to reiterate. I urge would be travelers to include Farmlinks if possible.

I don’t announce my arrival, as I don’t want service that differs from the non-writing customer. I agree with your assessment. We were in Alabama in late March, not necessarily the best time for climate, but every place we stopped was beyond standard, in the proper direction.

Vincenzi’s 2024 travelers championship betting preview: patrick cantlay to continue impressive play.

The third major championship of 2024 did not disappoint as Bryson Dechambeau capped off a sensational week with the second U.S. Open victory of his career. The season rolls along to Cromwell, Connecticut, where TPC River Highlands hosts the 2024 Travelers Championship. This is yet another designated event with a $20 million dollar purse.

TPC River Highlands is a 6,841-yard par-70 that has been a PGA Tour stop for 40 years. Home of the only 58 in Tour history, it is possible to go extremely low at this Pete Dye design. However, TPC River Highlands does feature a difficult closing stretch with holes 16-18 all historically averaging scores over par.

The Travelers Championship will play host to 72 golfers this week. Being a signature event, almost all of the best players on Tour will be teeing it up.

1. Strokes Gained: Approach

Strokes Gained: Approach sits at the top spot in the stat model this week. The course is relatively short, and golfers with multiple types of skill sets compete here. Iron play is often the great equalizer allowing the shorter hitters to compete, and that should be the case again this week.

2024 Travelers Championship Picks

Patrick cantlay +2500 (fanduel).

When a player contends in a major in the previous week, I typically like to fade said player the following week. However, this week feels a bit different to me. Cantlay has been struggling all season, and I can’t help but feel like the former FedEx Cup champion found something during the U.S. Open. I also don’t think he was incredibly disappointed with the result. He played well on Sunday and was impressive over the weekend, finally getting a true feel of what major championship contention felt like. It was all positives for Cantlay at Pinehurst.

Cantlay will now head to a spot where he’s had an incredible amount of success but has not yet notched a victory. In his last six starts at the course, he’s not finished worse than 15th. His best start came last year, where he finished T4. He ranks 1st in the field in Strokes Gained: Total at TPC River Highlands. Cantlay is also a Pete Dye specialist and ranks 4th in the field in Strokes Gained: Total on Dye tracks. The 32-year-old ranks 3rd in Par 4 birdie or better percentage.

Cantlay was spectacular across the board at Pinehurst. For the week, he ranked 3rd in Strokes Gained: Approach, 7th in Strokes Gained: Ball Striking and 10th in Strokes Gained: Putting. I fully expect him to build off of that performance and contend once again at one of his favorite Tour stops.

Sam Burns +3500 (DraftKings)

Sam Burns had a great Sunday at Pinehurst, which is always a bonus heading into the following week. He shot -3 in his final round, which got him into the top ten (T9) in what was a successful major for a player who’s not performed his best in them historically.

Burns is a prolific birdie maker who can win a boat race to -20 as well as anyone on Tour. He’s also had some success at both Pete Dye courses, where he ranks 13th in Strokes Gained: Total over his past 36 rounds, and at TPC River Highlands, where he ranks 12th in Strokes Gained: Total over his past 36 rounds.

Burns has been playing some solid golf of late. He has four top-15 finishes in his past starts including a T13 at the Wells Fargo Championship, 10th at the RBC Canadian Open and 15th at the Memorial Tournament. He has gained strokes on approach and off the tee in five of his past six starts.

The LSU product can win golf tournaments in a variety of ways. His ability to make putts if it turns into a wedge and putting contest makes him a strong candidate to contend this week.

Sahith Theegala +4500 (BetRivers)

Sahith Theegala has been playing some solid golf over the last few months. As we saw last year with Keegan Bradley, a missed cut at the U.S. Open shouldn’t necessarily scare someone off from a player who fits TPC River Highlands, which I believe Theegala does.

TPC River Highlands is the site of Theegala’s near victory a few years back. He finished in a tie for 2nd in 2022 after making double-bogey on the 18th hole with a one-shot lead, losing to Xander Schauffele. Theegala will now head back to the course as a more mature player who is in the midst of the best season of his career.

This season, the former Haskins award winner in having strong finishes in some of the season’s most important events. He finished 5th at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, 6th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, 9th at the PLAYERS Championship, 2nd at the RBC Heritage and 12th at both the Memorial Tournament and PGA Championship.

In his past 24 rounds, Sahith ranks 12th in Strokes Gained: Approach, 11th in Strokes Gained: Ball Striking, 18th in Par 4 birdie or better percentage and 8th in Strokes Gained: Putting on Bent/POA mixed putting surfaces.

If this turns into another shootout, Theegala has the type of ball striking and putting combination that can win a race to -20.

Sungjae Im +6600 (BetRivers)

After seemingly regaining his form over the past month, Sungjae took a step back at last week’s U.S. Open. The South Korean missed the cut, shooting +10 over his first two rounds. Despite the disappointing result, I don’t believe one poor start at a long and difficult golf course is enough reason to give up on him. 

Although the score was regretful at Pinehurst No. 2, Im hit the ball pretty well from tee to green. In his two rounds, he gained strokes both off the tee and on approach. His downfall was with the putter, which can be extremely hit or miss, especially over the course of this season.

Prior to the U.S. Open, Sungjae had finished in the top ten in three of his previous four starts. He finished T4 at the Wells Fargo “Signature Event” at Quail Hollow, T9 at the Charles Schwab Challenge and T8 at The Memorial Tournament. He’s also gained strokes off the tee in nine straight events.

Im has made three starts at TPC River Highlands, finishing 21st, 58th and 29th respectively. Im hits fairways at a high clip, which will be a massive advantage this week and his lack of driving distance won’t be an issue. He also ranks 12th in the field in his past 24 rounds in Strokes Gained: Total on Pete Dye designs.

It’s been a long time since Im has won an event (2021 Shriners), but I believe he’s back on the upswing and is still a higher end talent on the PGA Tour with another win coming soon.

Tom Kim +6600 (BetRivers)

After a sluggish start to the 2024 season, Tom Kim has come on strong over the past month or so. The South Korean started his stretch of impressive play at Valhalla for the PGA Championship, finishing 24th. After that, Kim put together finishes of T4 at the RBC Canadian Open and a T26 at last week’s U.S. Open. In between, he finished T43 at The Memorial, but hit the ball great from tee to green.

Tom has done an impressive job of playing well at long and difficult setups, but this week, he will head to a course in TPC River Highlands that should his game immaculately. Both of Kim’s wins have come at short setups that mitigate his biggest weakness, which is driving distance. The course is short this week and fits the mold of the tracks Tom has had great success at over the past few seasons on Tour.

In his past 24 rounds, Kim ranks 7th in Par 4 birdie or better percentage, which will come into play this week. He also ranks 19th in the field in Strokes Gained: Ball Striking.

Kim is already a three-time winner on the PGA Tour and has shown that if he gets a sniff of contention, he can close out a tournament with the best of them.

Vincenzi’s 2024 Memorial Tournament betting preview: Collin Morikawa to reign supreme at Jack’s place

The PGA Tour heads to Jack’s place to play the 2024 edition of the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday. The Memorial is regarded as one of the most prestigious non-majors of the PGA Tour season, and for the second consecutive year the tournament will be a “Signature Event”.

Muirfield Village Golf Club is a 7,571-yard par-72 located in Dublin, Ohio that features Bentgrass greens. A Jack Nicklaus design, the course was built in 1974 and redesigned by Nicklaus in 2020. The course can play extremely difficult due to its long rough and lightning-fast greens.

The Memorial Tournament will play host to 80 golfers this week, which is down from 120 last year. The top 50 and ties will make the cut. Being a designated event, the field is predictably stacked and will feature most of the biggest stars on Tour. All eligible players have committed to the event in addition to sponsor’s exemptions Matt Kuchar, Brandt Snedeker and Billy Horschel.

Jack Nicklaus designs all have one thing in common: They reward the best iron players on Tour. When designing Muirfield Village, Jack created a second-shot golf course that strongly benefited golfers who could really dial in their approach shots. With that in mind, does it surprise anyone that Tiger Woods won this event five times?

2024 Memorial Tournament Picks

Collin morikawa +1800 ( fanatics ).

Collin Morikawa has consistently shown up in the biggest events over the past few months. He finished in a tie for 3rd at The Masters, 9th at the RBC Heritage, a tie for 16th at the Wells Fargo Championship and a tie for 4th at the PGA Championship. He also finished 4th in his most recent start at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Iron play is always a strong indication of where Morikawa’s game is trending, and his Strokes Gained: Approach numbers have seen a recent uptick. The two-time major champion has gained an average of 4.0 strokes on approach over his last two starts, which despite not being as good as his peak approach numbers, are a major improvement over the past year or so.

Morikawa has played some great golf at Muirfield Village throughout his career. He won the Workday Charity Open in 2020 and lost in a playoff at The Memorial Tournament in 2021. His two most recent starts at the course have ended in a withdraw and a missed cut, but his current form is much better than it was over the past few seasons coming into the event.

In addition to the strong iron play, the ability to keep the ball in the fairway will be a major advantage for a Memorial Tournament that I anticipate will play relatively difficult. Morikawa has gained strokes off the tee in eight consecutive starts, including 3.8 strokes at the PGA Championship and 4.0 strokes at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

The American has been fantastic at Nicklaus Courses since he burst onto the scene on the PGA Tour, and that was once again on full display at Valhalla last month. In his last 36 rounds, Collin ranks 3rd in Strokes Gained: Total on Nicklaus designs. He also ranked 1st in the field in Good Drive %, which will be a key this week.

It’s been a while since the 27-year-old has won a big event on Tour, but that could very well change this week at Jack’s place.

Justin Thomas +2500 (BetMGM)

Justin Thomas is winless in last 43 professional starts, dating back to the 2022 PGA Championship. For a player with 17 professional wins and in the prime of his career, that’s a long time.

Other than being “due”, Thomas has shown signs that is just about all the way back from his two-year slump. He has four top-ten finishes this season, with three of those being at a “signature” event or a major. Most recently, he’s finished in a tie for 5th at the RBC Heritage, a tie for 21st at the Wells Fargo Championship and a tie for 8th at the PGA Championship.

JT has loved Nicklaus designs throughout his career. He finished 2nd at the 2020 Workday at Muirfield Village, losing in a playoff to Collin Morikawa. In his last 30 rounds at the course, he ranks 6th in Strokes Gained: Total.

In addition to the obvious course fit, Thomas’ ball striking numbers have come to life of late. He gained 4.1 strokes on approach at the PGA Championship to go along with 4.6 strokes off the tee. Valhalla another Jack Nicklaus design so it’s encouraging to see that’s where he had arguably his best ball striking week of the season. The key for Thomas will be keeping the ball on the fairways this week and he’s improved his SG: OTT performance in four consecutive starts.

Thomas is finally in form and ready to get back in the winner’s circle at Muirfield Village.

Byeong Hun An +5000 (DraftKings)

Byeong Hun An is playing the best golf of his career. This season, the 32-year-old has finished T16 at the Genesis Invitational, T16 at The Masters, T8 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and 3rd at the Wells Fargo Championship.

The South Korean’s ball striking has been fantastic this year. He’s gained strokes both off the tee and on approach in six consecutive events. An will now head back to a course where he’s had plenty of success. Back in 2018, he lost in a playoff to a surging superstar named Bryson DeChambeau. Ben has five top-25 finishes in eight starts at the course. The few times he missed the cut were in 2020 and 2021 when he was really struggling with his game.

An has had some close calls of late and I believe we need to stick with him for one more week.

Corey Conners +6000 (DraftKings)

Corey Conners is absolutely striping the ball right now. In his past 24 rounds, the Canadian ranks 2nd in Strokes Gained: Approach, 5th in Strokes Gained: Ball Striking and 22nd in Good Drive %.

At last week’s Canadian Open, Conners ranked 4th for the week in approach and finished in 6th place. In his previous two starts, Conners ranked 2nd in Strokes Gained: Approach at the Wells Fargo Championship and 4th at the PGA Championship. There are very few players on the planet that are currently hotter with their irons than Corey Conners.

Conners has a solid history at Muirfield Village with mixed results. His best finish came in 2022, when he finished T13 and also finished T22 back in 2020. While putting is typically Conners’ greatest weakness, he’s gained strokes on the greens in three of his six starts at the course and ranks 30th in the field in Strokes Gained: Putting on fast Bentgrass, so there’s hope that the 32-year-old can putt to field average this week.

Conners’ ability to hit fairways and dial in his mid-irons can propel him to the top of the leaderboard this week at a course that favors ball strikers.

Will Zalatoris +8000 (DraftKings)

I’m not entirely sure if Will Zalatoris is fully healthy based on his recent struggles, but there are enough positive signs for a player of his talent at this number.

Zalatoris made a Friday charge in his most recent start at the PGA Championship, which enabled him to sneak through the cut line. For the week, he gained 3.56 strokes on approach and has gained on approach in nine of his past ten starts.

Although he’s struggled at times, Zalatoris still has some strong finishes in big events this year. He finished in a tie for 9th at the Masters, a tie for 4th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and a tie foe 2nd at the Genesis Invitational.

If Zalatoris is feeling fit, Muirfield Village is a perfect course to showcase his strengths. He’s one of the best iron players in the world and already has a 5th place finish in his most recent start at the course (2022).

This is a buy low opportunity on a world class player that has win equity.

Saso says so! Yuka Saso survives for second U.S. Open title

One of my favorite golf writers was the late Ron Balicki, and not just for the shared first name. Balicki was called, and enjoyed, the nickname “Wrong Ron,” because whoever he chose to win, was guaranteed to do not that. I might have inherited the moniker, sadly, and if you read yesterday’s update, this week goes miles to secure that designation. Four amateurs made the cut, and three of them tied for low amateur at 12-over par. I picked the one that did not make that number. Hilarious, no? As for the tournament proper, the new “Wrong Ron” guessed the correct country, but the wrong golfer. I went with Hinako Shibuno, and it was the  other pride of Japan, Yuka Saso, who stole the show. Alas!

For a healthy portion of the day, odds were in the favor of a player earning a second Open title. Important note:  her name was not Yuka Saso. As golfers around her crumbled, Minjee Lee held steady at +1 on the day, and -4 on the week. Arpichya Yubol from Thailand had made the big move of the day. She reached -3 on the day an -1 for the week, before two late bogies dropped her to solo fifth position, a remarkable achievement. The round of the day came from Ally Ewing, who posted four birdies against zero bogeys for 66 and a tie for third spot.

As for Minjee, the round’s thread began to unravel at the 9th. A missed fairway led to bogey, and she followed with a three-putt for another at the tenth hole. Double bogeys at 12 and 14 took her out of the running for the title, and opened the chase to a new segment of the field. Hinako Shibuno would ultimately finish in solo second, one of two golfers to finish under par on the week. Shibuno was never a threat for the title, but when others lost their momentum, she found herself positioned for a runner-up finish.

It was Yuka Saso who turned in the day’s memorable performance. Saso turned in even par on the day, preserving her position at one-under par. Andrea Lee (+5) and Wichanee Meechai (+7) fell away from their place atop the third-round chart, as did Minjee Lee. Suddenly, Saso had posted four birdies in five holes on the inward half. She finished at two under on the day, four under on the week, and earned a three-shot win over Shibuno.

In her post-0round comments, Saso revealed that she had doubts that she would win again, especially a major title. She discussed the addition of a new putter to her bag, and her extraordinary confidence in her driver. Finally, Saso revealed how important the first cut of rough was to the resolution of the tournament. That wee bit of playable grass made all the difference in her mind.

With the refreshing transparency that all writers desire, Yuka Saso won for a second time on Sunday. We’ll forgive her if she values the US Open silver a bit more.

Q-School is back in session -- and with higher stakes.

For the first time in a decade, PGA TOUR cards will be available at the PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry, which will be held Dec. 14-17 at TPC Sawgrass’ Dye’s Valley Course and Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. The top five and ties will earn an immediate promotion to golf’s highest level.

2024 Solheim Cup to Honor U.S. Military Members at AWS Command Post

GAINESVILLE, Va., June 27, 2024   – To honor those who have bravely served their country, the 2024 Solheim Cup is proud to announce a ticketing and hospitality program for U.S. Military members. From Sept. 10-15, 2024, the best golfers from the United States and Europe will take to Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Va., for a chance to claim the most prestigious team title in women’s golf.

Courtesy of a partnership with AWS, the Official Cloud Computing and Infrastructure Sponsor of the 2024 Solheim Cup, current and former members of the U.S. Military will receive two complimentary tickets per day to the AWS Command Post or two complimentary grounds tickets during Practice Days and 50% off two grounds tickets during Competition Days. This program will provide access for Active Duty, Active Reserve, Veterans, Military Retirees and ROTC personnel.

“We are honored to sponsor the 2024 Solheim Cup. Similar to our unwavering commitment to supporting the public sector, this is a small gesture of our appreciation for the service and sacrifices of our active-duty military members, and veterans, who have served our nation,” said Dave Levy, vice president of AWS Worldwide Public Sector (WWPS). “We look forward to welcoming these heroes to the Solheim Cup and celebrating the amazing talents of the world's best female golfers."

The AWS Command Post, with an elevated view of the fourth hole at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, will include food and beverage options, as well as private restrooms. Tickets for the AWS Command Post will be available on a first-come first-served basis, with limited space availability per day.

• General Admission  - Daily and weekly General Admission tickets include access to tournament grounds, various open seating options across the course and food and beverage options available for purchase at concessions.
• Solheim Pavilion   - Spectators will have week-long access to tournament grounds and the Solheim Pavilion, an open-air, unreserved seating area offering elevated views of the third, fourth, 13th and 14th holes. This also includes upgraded food and beverage options for purchase.
• Clubhouse   - Clubhouse tickets will provide ticket holders with access to the clubhouse hospitality and an on-course viewing deck on hole 17. Tickets also include valet parking (one pass for every two tickets purchased; no pass for a single ticket), food and beverages.
• Captains Club  - In addition to access to tournament grounds and all-inclusive food and beverages, Captains Club tickets offer an open-air, unreserved seating area with elevated views of the fifth and seventh holes.
• Junior General Admission  - Juniors (17 and under) will receive admission for $1, which will be donated to  LPGA*USGA Girls Golf , with a ticketed adult during Practice Rounds (Tuesday-Thursday). For Competition Days (Friday-Sunday), Junior tickets are available at a significant discount.
