Turkey’s melting pot: a foodie break in Istanbul
The best way to understand the city is through its food, and the best guide is a Michelin-star chef who knows where to find succulent doners, crisp calamari and rich taramasalata
S aturday morning, 10am, and I’m sitting at a café table on a cobbled street in the Beşiktaş neighbourhood of Istanbul, sipping a glass of çay (Turkish tea) and waiting for breakfast. By the café entrance, a plump, grey-haired man in a crisp white apron is sharpening a knife, before slicing through what is generally acknowledged to be the largest doner kebab in Turkey. The kebab weighs 100kg, a meaty monster slowly cooking from the outside in. Our guide, Sinan, tells us that Black Sea (Karadeniz) doners from this area are always the best – all of it will be gone by mid-afternoon.
Istanbul is a city that runs on its stomach. It may be steeped in history, but the best way to understand this multi-layered melting pot of east and west, Ottoman and Byzantine, is undoubtedly through its food. I’m lucky enough to be spending a couple of days with Cenk Debensason, recently awarded a Michelin star for his restaurant, Arkestra . The chance to discover the city through his eyes – and taste buds – promises a different version of Istanbul.
After breakfast, instead of following the well-trodden tourist trail to the historic district of Sultanahmet, we head north to Bebek, a leafy suburb where the streets are dotted with boutiques and small-batch coffee shops. I feel rather like I’m in the Turkish equivalent of Hampstead. Like London, Istanbul shares a similar sense of being a collection of villages, stitched together over the centuries, and getting away from the centre offers the chance to experience it more like a local than a visitor. We dip into Midnight , where the artfully arranged shelves and racks are filled with jewellery, ceramics and clothes by the city’s hottest designers, and head on to the Petra Roasting Company , where sofas are shared with snoozing cats and the nuttily rich Ethiopian coffee fires us up.
From Bebek, we go further north to Tarabya, a waterfront neighbourhood that has attracted tourists since it began life as a health resort in the 18th century. As we drive alongside the Bosphorus, it reminds me of the winding roads that flank Lake Como: restaurants and hotels on one side, the water on the other – and on the opposite side, opulent mansions built decades, even centuries before, for the city’s wealthy elite.
We’ve come for lunch at Kiyi , an Istanbul institution that has been serving the same fish-rich menu since it opened in the 1960s. The meal is exquisite: plump mussels stuffed with mint, crisp calamari, rose-tinted octopus and taramasalata thick with roe. The vast turbot that appears as our shared main course, buttery soft, slipping off the bone like silk, ruins me for all other fish for ever.
After lunch, we drive back to Beyoglu to explore the cobbled streets of the Çukurcuma district, where the elegant, European-style mansions house antique shops selling everything from ancient statuary to art deco lamps and retro 1960s furniture that could have come straight from the set of Austin Powers. One of the most famous is A La Turca , owned by the ebullient Erkal Aksoy, who shows us around his extraordinary emporium before settling us in on slouchy leather sofas with tea, biscuits and glasses of his homemade cherry brandy.
The following day we set out on the ferry to Kadiköy, on the Asian side – one of the city’s foodiest neighbourhoods. Next to me, a man produces a bread roll from his pocket and tears off chunks, throwing them up to the gaggle of gulls flying alongside the boat. To my surprise, instead of swooping down to gobble the crumbs from the water, they dive and dart to catch the bread in mid-air – an impressive display of aeronautics that shows the gulls are as obsessed with food as everyone else in this city.
In Kadiköy, we dip into pickle shops, with their glass jars stacked from floor to ceiling, and cubby-hole stalls with great gold samovars of olive oil and soft mounds of spices – scarlet chilli, golden saffron, the brittle woody flowers of star anise. It’s warm enough to sit outside for lunch at Çiya Sofras , which specialises in traditional Anatolian dishes. The table groans with unctuous aubergine and yoghurt dips, crispy lahmacun (flatbread with spicy meat) and succulent kebabs.
The ferry ride back is a blissful hit of sunshine before we walk through the city’s Dickensian meatpacking district to one of its newest treasures – the Zeyrek Çinili Hamam – a spectacularly beautiful Turkish bath, dating back to the 16th century. Opening its doors this spring after a 13-year restoration project, it offers bathing spaces that are pristine white and freckled with stars cut into the domed ceiling, and there’s a fascinating museum charting the cultural importance and history of hamams in both Ottoman and modern-day Turkish life.
On our final night, we take a taxi through the city’s labyrinthine roads to Arkestra , Debensason’s restaurant, tucked away in the quiet Etiler neighbourhood in Beşiktaş. Stepping through the door feels like walking into the coolest kind of house party. Upstairs, cocktails are flowing in the Listening Room bar, while the main dining room feels like a buzzy, upmarket bistro. The food is modern and creative, a confident mix of classical French technique and vibrant Asian flavours. Tuna sashimi comes with sushi rice ice-cream and a ginger ponzu vinaigrette, panko fried beef with sweetly sour tonkatsu sauce. Everything looks beautiful, tastes delicious and leaves you wanting just a little bit more – the perfect metaphor for Istanbul itself.

Epic Amazon sale on travel essentials — 11 deals I’m eyeing, starting at $3
I'm tempted to buy them all for an upcoming trip
Quick Links
Amazon travel deals.
I used to consider myself something of a traveling pro. Catching a flight or two a month used to be the norm, but in the last few years, I can count the number of times I've arrived at a destination from the air on just one hand. Needless to say, my in-transit routine is a little rusty. And for an upcoming trip, there are still a few last-minute gadgets I'm eyeing to make the going easier.
Thankfully, nearly everything on my list is on sale at Amazon. I uncovered nine discounted travel essentials to supplement, re-supply, or replace the few items I already have on hand. For instance, while I absolutely adore my check-covered packing cubes from Calpak , they aren't exactly phenomenal at compressing my clothing. That's where these Amazon finds come in handy.
- Lysol Disinfecting Wipes To-Go 2-Pack: was $4 now $3
- Airless Pump Bottle Refillable Containers: was $9 now $7
- ProCase Travel Jewelry Box: was $17 now $9
- Small Nylon Crescent Crossbody Bag: was $14 now $10
- Packism 3-Pack Clear Toiletry Bags: was $13 now $11
- Anker Nano Power Bank: was $29 now $18
- Hyted Travel Adapter and Converter: was $39 now $29
- Bagsmart Compression Packing Cubes: was $42 now $39
- Mee Audio Wireless Audio Transmitter: was $49 now $42
- Apple Air Tag 4-Pack: was $99 now $79
- Nori Press Travel Steam Iron: was $120 now $106
Lysol Disinfecting Wipes To-Go 2-Pack: was $4 now $3 I wipe down everything on a flight — the tray, seat, buckle, you name it. A small, portable pack of disinfectant wipes is a must for me, but an often overpriced buy at the airport. I recommend scooping up this discounted pair before even heading out the door.
Airless Pump Bottle Refillable Containers: was $9 now $7 @ Amazon Full disclosure: I'll be transporting my haircare, lotion and more in the mini travel bottles from Ries this go around, but love the price point of these 1.8-ounce airless pump bottles over on Amazon. "No waste! No spills!" one reviewer writes. And that's the biggest benefit of going with this type of reusable dispenser, in my opinion.
ProCase Travel Jewelry Box: was $17 now $9 @ Amazon For some reason, I've never invested in a travel-sized jewelry organizer. Instead, I have a bad habit of stuffing gems and baubles in the pockets of my toiletry bag. This ingenious, shell-shaped leather box, however, offers a multitude of ways to securely store everything I'm planning to wear (and then some!) with a top lid partition and removable clapboard. It's just 4 inches wide and 2 inches tall but can carry up to 5 necklaces, 20 earrings, 7 rings, and 8 bracelets. But the best part? The black colorway is currently 44% off.
Packism 3-Pack Clear Toiletry Bags: was $13 now $11 @ Amazon Truthfully, I've never had an issue with packing too many skincare or makeup items. But armed with the knowledge that London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports are notorious for being strict on this front, I'm not taking my chances with the 100ml liquid limit (a rule that, although due to be lifted, still stands). Sturdier and more leakproof than Ziplock, I'll be tapping one of these see-through, waterproof baggies instead.
Small Nylon Crescent Crossbody Bag: was $14 now $10 @ Amazon I'm a "small purse" type of person, but knowing full well I'll be spending the majority of my day away from a hotel room, I knew I'd need a bag big enough (but not too large — my Longchamp Le Pliage is just a tad too cumbersome) to carry all of my essentials and mirrorless camera. This trendy, crescent-shaped sling bag is made with water-resistant nylon that's fully packable.
Anker Nano Power Bank: was $29 now $18 @ Amazon If you, like me, swiftly drain your phone's battery, a portable charging pack is a must. But I've decided my old model is simply too big and bulky anymore, especially since it limits use with a cord. Anker's miniature USB-C version is far more compact and won't interfere with my picture-taking. Reviewers say it's quick, convenient, and extremely lightweight. It's also 37% off right now.
Hyted Travel Adapter and Converter: was $49 now $37 @ Amazon After realizing the travel plug adapter (a must-have when venturing outside of the U.S.) I purchased for a long weekend in Ireland actually wouldn't safely support my hair styling tools, I started searching for a fairly priced converter. This particular unit, albeit a bit of an eyesore, is 24% off and converts 220V to 110V.
Bagsmart Compression Packing Cubes: was $42 now $39 @ Amazon After watching these packing cubes compress down in action on TikTok, I dreaded having to replace my current set but knew it'd likely be worth the swap. Even a few inches of spare room — especially in my super slim, ultra-light July carry-on —would be welcomed. This 6-pack is backed by 8,800-plus positive reviews, which note the quality zippers and fabric, range of size options, and pack down.
Mee Audio Wireless Audio Transmitter: was $49 now $42 @ Amazon We've all probably heard of Twelve South's AirFly ($54), but I hate paying full price for anything, and this brand alternative is $12 less. This pick, in particular, supports up to two AirPods, handy when not traveling solo, to share music or tune into the same film. One reviewer even writes, "The audio quality is fantastic. I was initially skeptical about using a wireless audio transmitter, fearing that it might compromise the sound, but I'm happy to report that the sound remains crisp and clear."
Apple Air Tag 4-Pack: was $99 now $79 @ Amazon Nothing stresses me out more than having to check luggage, but with a 9-day vacation coming up, I won't be able to fit everything (or the souvenirs I bring back) in my carry-on. An Apple Air Tag, however, would at least enable me to keep tabs on where my suitcase ends up. It's only $5 short of the lowest price we've ever seen for a 4-pack.
Nori Press Travel Steam Iron: was $120 now $106 @ Amazon Not every hotel I stay at always has an ironing board on hand, but I've also never splurged on a travel-friendly steamer. Luckily, Nori's Press is 10% off and will fit in my suitcase much like a hair straightener would. The price alone is worth not having to worry about bent collars or wrinkly tops.

Having the right tech on a trip allow you to relax and keep connected.
Having the right tech on board - or on the road - makes everything easier. In the words of Mama Cass, things are getting better every day - today's tech is lighter, more powerful and useful than ever before. Here are some of the best gifts for a mother who likes to be on the move.
Bolt Magnetic Speaker
The Bolt speaker has a magnetic plate that can attach to a car, boat or golf cart.
From tailgating to boating or bringing some sound to a rental kitchen, the new Bolt speaker ($79.95) from Outdoor Tech has a powerful magnet meaning you can attach it to any metal surface whether a car, fridge or golf buggy. Using bluetooth (no surprise there), it’s also waterproof (handy for jet skiing) and can charge your tech in its spare time.
Kindle Scribe
A Kindle Scribe allows you to read, write and anotate with your tablet
Not opting for the smallest, lightest Kindle might sound counterintuitive in a travel tech guide, but the ability of the Kindle Scribe (from $339) to multitask makes it an inflight winner. It has up to 64gb to play with, weighs a delightful 433g and - at the end of the day - does more than any other Kindle. You can take notes, the conversion to text even works for my doctor-bad hand-writing. Lots of people will use it to annotate text in a work tool but for those of us who are born doodlers, we get to decorate the margins of the books in a completely guilt-free way.
Torras Coolify Cyber
Aircon becomes portable, thanks to this gadget
For when you need some air-conditioning alongside getting into nature, the Torras Coolify Cyber ($279) allows you to add serious chill when exercising or sightseeing. An instant temperature reduction of 10 degrees cools the face, neck and back, thanks to three thermoelectric semiconductors and four high-speed motors but it’s lightweight and almost silent.
Bang & Olufsen Ader Error collaboration
This Danish/South Korean collaboration is a very stylish one
When it’s important that your mother’s speaker is very stylish indeed. The cult Danish audio company Bang & Olufsen has launched a limited-edition collaboration with the Seoul-based fashion brand. A fusion of fashion and music, the company’s Beosound A1 portable speaker (from £450) has been allied with Ader Error’s signature Z-blue color, accompanied by a bespoke leather speaker bag and speaker stand.
Your Best Look Yet At The New iPhone 16
Trump media stock djt at risk of a new short selling plunge, ryan garcia what s ostarine and how could a boxer use it to cheat, mz skin lightmax minipro eyeconic led.
High tech lightweight skin care from a leading firm.
Seeing red can be a good thing on Mother’s Day, when they give power packed facials at home. While a full face LED mask can look a little full-on (and is not ideal if you’re feeling claustrophobic), these MZ Skin Lightmax Minipro Eyeconic LED eye patches (£300) won’t scare the grandchildren. Harnessing Red 630nm and Near Infrared 830nm wavelengths to silicone LED pads that are conducted through Hydrocolloid patches, there’s a travel pouch to make transporting them easy.
Denon PerL Pro earbuds
These Denon earbuds measure your hearing and adapt automatically
One of the very best stealth audio brands, these Denon earbuds ($349) - equipped with Qualcomm aptX Lossless technology - automatically measure your hearing and create a unique profile while spacial audio from Dirac Virtuo puts you in the center of your audio. Easy to switch between powerful noise canceling or a social mode, the earphones have a powerful eight hour battery life while the case delivers three additional charges and - should you wish to chat to your mom, there are eight microphones for voice pickup.
Tile Mate tracker
A Tile Mate tracker could help reunite you with your luggage
In December, having an Airtag allowed me to observe - at an annoying distance - my suitcase languishing in Antigua after I’d made it onto a puddle jumper to Anguilla. In happier news, my tracker meant that I could steer the airline staff to it. Since I periodically question my slavish devotion to all things Apple, a Tile (from £19) is an Android equivalent and usually cheaper.
