We did the cocktail city true crime tour in Charleston, SC and it was 5 stars. Michael (Mike) was an amazing tour guide and a great conversationalist. The tour was seamless, uncrowded by other bar patrons, and timed perfectly to allow for group conversation as well as ample and detailed storytelling by our guide. The drinks were wonderful and definitely worth the ticket price.

We have never been to Charleston before so decided to take this tour after reading the reviews. SOOO glad we did!! What a blast! Don was such a charismatic guide and so fun to hang out with! We learned a lot and had so much fun the entire time! I don’t write many reviews, but I truly had to for this tour! If your on the fence, don’t be! And ask for Don!!

This really was a great tour. Don our guide was fascinating and had lots of great stories. It was obvious he had a great relationship with the venues, and more importantly with the bartenders themselves. The drinks were very good, and quite varied. Plus they were strong. By the last one we were very happy. Highly recommend this tour.

Definitely do not recommend. The owner of this business was our guide and showed up late, disheveled, looking like he had just dragged himself out of bed (or off the floor) after a bender and was nursing a hangover. The first bar on our "tour" was closed (which he didn't know until he showed up) so we wandered around stopping at what seemed to be random open bars with no specific significance. He did tell a few stories about Charleston history, but all delivered in a monotone, like he was just going through the motions. The tour is advertised that there would be appetizers along the way but that never happened. We never spent long enough at a place to even consider ordering anything, or even having enough time to finish our drinks (guess we were supposed to just chug them). All in all it was very disappointing. Don't bother spending your money with this guy.

Photo of Brian O.

So...was pretty excited about this tour. Sadly, we left the tour bored and hangry. We were fed one appetizer at the first pub. Each pub we went to we expected to eat but nothing else was served for the next 2 hours. The stories told had a few bits of interesting info but went on for what seemed like eternity. So many dates and names! At what we hoped would be the last pub, Daniel drug us (he stumbled) to one more place which wasn't even a pub. Somehow Daniel's last beer ended up on our tab. Shady! Some of the pubs we went to didn't even have historic relevance. Daniel was a nice guy but it may be time for him to hand in his tour credentials. Definitely not worth the money. You can mosey around Charleston easily and create your own pub crawl.

Photo of Olivia D.

Don't waste your money. The tour was just to have a guy chaperone us at several bars.. we paid for all of our own drinks and he tried to sneak one of his drinks into our tab at one of the last stops. Save yourself the disappointment and just google bars in downtown to go to. Seriously nothing special for $42/person

Photo of Brittany A.

I would not recommend spending your money on this tour. The tour guide got hammered and left us half way through the tour when we had 2 more places to go. She was also the owner! My friend called when she left, her husband answered and said she got too drunk to finish the tour (she was in the background laughing hysterically!) and he said he would refund us. We got more history about England than we did about Charlston. We were very disappointed but they did provide us the refund.

Photo of Rachael K.

I would not recommend this company, specifically Daniel (our tour guide). Nothing about Daniel really screamed "tour guide." He showed up disheveled, unorganized, and didn't really make a point to get to know us or make our experience special. This was a bachelorette party, but it felt like Daniel was tagging along with us trying to make small talk and sharing 1-2 stories about Charleston. Some of the waitresses seemed to appear uncomfortable in his presence.. which was really awkward. And at another bar he tried to get us to pay for one of his beers (not telling us his beer was on our tab when he told us it's time to pay), which I didn't think anything of, until I read more reviews on here that he tried to do the SAME THING to other groups! Not cool. We each paid around 40$ each for this experience and received 1 appetizer and were responsible for all of our own drinks. Anyway. Not sure what the rest of the money went towards. Would recommend literally anything else than this experience

Photo of Madison B.

My husband and I visited Charleston in October and signed up to do a haunted pub crawl. While we did meet great people and visit great spots in Charleston, there was NOTHING spooky or ghostly about the tour. Did get some fun facts about the city itself, but definitely not what we paid for. The tour guide was super friendly but there wasn't much of a haunted-factor.

Photo of Lex G.

We LOVED this tour! We're new to the area and loved to learn more about our new home! Daniel took us to 5 historic bars downtown and was super knowledgeable about everything to do with Charleston's history! It was a fun time and we definitely recommend this tour to anyone!

Photo of Elizabeth J.

This was an absolute scam. Daniel showed up high and did not make any effort to make the night special. I do not recommend having Daniel as a guide. Do not waste your hard earned money for this tour.

Photo of Joey G.

We took a quick trip for two nights down to Charleston for some R&R and decided to do something fun, WHY NOT! Looking at tours and not wanting to smell horse crap for an hour on a Carriage Tour, the Pub tour sounded like the best option. Bought the tickets two hours before the tour on my laptop and away we went. Met at Tommy Condon's and enjoyed some nice Irish Nachos and a Black & Tan while listening to the most awesome tour guide! Dan has more historical knowledge about South Carolina and Charleston that most anyone I know, he should be on Jeopardy! We had a small group max of 6 due to COVID and the other two couples from Athens GA were a delight to pair up with. The pubs were great as well as the conversation. I would like to come back and take the kids because of the history lesson as well as the tales of the pirates! #BlackBeard #5Stars #WorthEveryPenny #DontDoAnyOtherTourButThisOne

Photo of Tara L.

We went to Charleston for my sisters bachelorette trip! We did the pub & brewery tour one day and had so much fun! We definitely recommend it to anyone! Daniel was our tour guide and was super nice and knowledgeable!

Charleston Food & Drink Tours

A row of several small glasses of beer.

Charleston is renowned for its food culture, and several local guide companies offer food-focused tours to introduce you to a selection of the establishments in and around the city that contribute to this culture.

The bulk of food tours, mostly walking, visit a selection of locally-owned restaurants and artisanal shops, either within the downtown area or in one of Charleston’s other well-known dining districts, Upper King Street.

Charleston is also home to several microbreweries, distilleries and even a tea plantation. A bus tour can take you outside of the city to see a few of these businesses to see and learn more about their manufacturing processes, and usually taste the product too.

If you are looking more for new company and a drink than an education, there are also a few pub crawls on offer in Charleston, each visiting a handful of pubs and taverns in the city, with a few throwing in a little history too.

Or, for something a little bit different, you could try one of the seasonal boat tours offered to one of Charleston’s local barrier islands that offers the opportunity to sample a traditional regional dish or food-related pastime, such as crabbing or a lowcountry boil. – See details of tours to Capers Island or Morris Island.

Advance reservations are usually required for these tours.

Pub Crawl Description

Join Revelry Tours on the Speakeasy Sagas Pub Crawl and we'll transport you back in time to the roaring 1920s, when the sale and consumption of alcohol were illegal across the United States.

During Prohibition, Charleston had a rich history in the prohibition era, with a thriving underground speakeasy culture and plenty of fascinating stories to discover. During the pub crawl, you'll visit a variety of historic bars and pubs that were once speakeasies, hidden from the watchful eye of law enforcement.

Your knowledgeable guide will share stories of Charleston's bootleggers, gangsters, and other colorful characters who were involved in the illegal trade of alcohol during prohibition.

The Speakeasy Sagas Pub Crawl will include several stops at different bars and pubs in the Historic District of Charleston. Each of these carefully chosen locations has its own unique prohibition-era ambiance.

You'll have the chance to try some classic cocktails like the Old Fashioned, Gin Rickey, or Manhattan, all of which were popular during the 1920s. You'll also have the chance to try craft beers and wines that have been crafted in the spirit of prohibition-era libations.

Henry's on the Market

Henry’s on the Market is the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Charleston, opening its doors all the way back in 1932. The bar has more than just great drinks. You can enjoy its stunning rooftop deck or even its exclusive dance lounge.

On this stop, you’ll learn about the strange and fascinating history of bootlegging during the Prohibition Era, everything from smuggling booze in hollow chicken eggs to getting a boat just to drink in international waters.

Blind Tiger Pub

The Blind Tiger Pub gets its name from the term “blind tiger” which was used to describe illegal drinking and gambling establishments. Now, this blind tiger won’t turn a blind eye to make sure you get the best drink possible.

Here you'll learn about a member of the Capone family who didn’t turn to crime. In fact, he became the opposite and actually became prohibition agent who would have no trouble breaking apart his brother’s bootleg empire.
