International travel is generally fun, and Mexico may be one of the best destinations for travelers from the United States. This is due to its stunning beaches, favorable exchange rate and, of course, its easy access from the U.S.

But the passport expiration rules in Mexico might keep you from having fun south of the border.

Let’s take a look at Mexico’s six-month passport rule this year, as well as ways to travel to Mexico without a passport and tips for getting your passport renewed.

Passport expiration rules for Mexico

Mexico’s passport validity rules are fairly lenient, especially when compared to other countries.

Unlike in Europe, where U.S. travelers must have at least six months of validity remaining on their passport when they visit, there has been no Mexico six-month passport rule in recent years.

Air travelers

According to the U.S. Department of State’s website, travelers entering by air need only have a passport that is currently valid.

There is no Mexico passport rule of six months. However, those arriving in the country do need to have at least one blank passport page in their book for stamps.

Overland travelers

If you’re entering by land, you'll need a valid passport. If you plan to travel beyond the immediate border area (approximately 12 miles), you will need to stop at the National Migration Institute office to obtain an entry permit.

Note that there are some exceptions to this entry permit rule, such as travel into Baja California , so be sure to confirm what’s required of you before you depart.

The process differs for those entering by water, especially if they're on a cruise or a private boat.

Although all travelers entering Mexico by water need to have a valid passport, there are some exceptions for closed-loop cruises that depart and return to the same U.S. port. In these cases, U.S. citizens need only bring their birth certificates and a valid government-issued ID to board their cruise.

Those on private boats are able to use a passport card rather than a passport book if they’re entering territorial waters but do not go ashore. Otherwise, they’ll need to meet all of Mexico’s standard entry requirements.

Can I travel to Mexico with an expired passport?

Even though there aren’t any passport requirements of six months validity for Mexico, that doesn’t mean you’re allowed to travel passport-free. This is especially important to note if you have an expired passport.

Although it may be possible to enter Mexico by a land crossing without needing to present documentation, it’s still something that you need to have with you on your person.

Renewing your passport

Don’t meet Mexico’s passport expiration rules? You’ll need to renew your passport if you want to enter the country.

If your passport is not damaged and was issued less than 15 years ago, among other criteria, you’ll be able to renew your passport by mail using the DS-82 form.

Here are all the requirements for renewing by mail:

You must submit your passport with your application.

The passport was issued when you were age 16 or older.

The passport was issued within the last 15 years.

The passport was never reported as lost or stolen.

The passport is not damaged other than normal wear and tear.

The passport has your current name or you’re able to provide legal documentation of your name change.

If your passport doesn’t meet all of these requirements, you’ll have to complete an application for a new passport instead. This is done in person through the DS-11 form.

Traveling to Mexico without a passport

It’s possible to travel to Mexico without a passport, though the circumstances in which you can do so are limited.

First, there are those closed-loop cruises that we talked about. For example: You board your cruise from a U.S. port, such as San Diego, cruise south down to Mexico and debark in Cabo San Lucas . There is no passport control at the cruise terminal; you’re simply able to get off the ship. At departure, you’ll board, sail north and return to San Diego.

When debarking in San Diego you’ll go through U.S. immigration. If you don’t have a passport, you can instead present your birth certificate and ID.

Second, it’s possible to enter Mexico by land using a passport card.

These allow citizens to reenter the U.S. from Mexico, Bermuda, Canada and Caribbean countries by land or sea. They cost less than a passport book, but they're not valid for other international travel or any travel by air.

After June 30, 2022, US citizens can no longer use their expired passports to return to the United States. If your passport expires abroad, you must contact the nearest US embassy or consulate to apply for a new US passport.

When and how to renew your passport, according to the State Department

Rest assured: The process is relatively straightforward, and most applicants can easily do it online.

Here's everything you need to know about renewing your U.S. passport.

When should you renew your passport?

When timing your passport renewal, there are many dates to consider. I would argue the most important date to remember is six months before your passport expires. This is because many countries require travelers to have a minimum of six months of passport validity left at the time of entry.

As long as you submit your passport for renewal at least six months in advance, it should also cover your expiration and travel dates.

Additionally, remember that U.S. passports are valid for 10 years for most adults and five years for passports issued before the age of 16.

When you identify all of the dates for your specific circumstances, you should check current passport processing times , which change frequently.

Current processing times

If you do not have travel booked within the next two months, the agency advises you to renew your passport via routine service to receive it within six to eight weeks. For travel within the next two months, your best option is expedited service. For either option, you should tack on another two weeks for processing to begin and another two weeks for the passports to be returned.

Urgent travel

If you have international travel planned in the next 14 days, you have a few options to renew your passport. Your first option falls under the urgent travel category, which is for non-emergency travel within two or three weeks. In this case, you should attempt to make an appointment at a passport agency or center, either online or in person.

For life-or-death emergencies necessitating international travel within three days, you must provide documentation of a qualifying emergency circumstance to make an appointment. Do this online if you've not yet applied for a passport or via phone if you have applied.

Note that you can schedule these appointments up to two weeks prior to travel, but your appointment must fall within three business days of travel. Also, note that appointments for urgent travel are limited and cannot be guaranteed.

How should you renew your passport?

Most people are eligible to renew their passport via mail; this requires completing a Form DS-82 and providing a photo, your most recent passport and a check for the fees. Passport photos must meet the specified guidelines listed here .

All passport applications sent by mail must be transmitted via the U.S. Postal Service — no exceptions. If you use another carrier, your renewal package will be returned to you without being processed. If you're mailing your passport renewal application from Canada, you must use Canada Post.

If you meet one of four circumstances — including if you applied for a child under age 16, lost your passport or received your most recent passport 15-plus years ago — then you must renew your passport in person at a passport acceptance facility . Some facilities allow walk-ins, while others require appointments, so double-check your desired location's requirements.

How much does it cost?

Renewing your passport costs $130 for a passport book, $30 for a limited-use passport card and $160 for both the book and a passport card. If you plan to expedite your service, factor in an additional $60. You can also pay $18.32 for faster mailing.

Travel Docs Update: Online Passport Renewal and Digital Driver’s Licenses

New options have arrived, for both U.S. passports and driver’s licenses, that may give travelers more flexibility.

Americans needing travel documents increasingly have digital options that can make the process faster and easier.

As of this week, renewing a passport no longer requires mailing in an application , but can be done with a click of a button. And in the last few months, more states have started issuing mobile driver’s licenses, which can be stored on a phone.

Here’s what travelers should know.

You can now renew your passport online.

Renewing a passport will no longer require you to mail in an old passport and send a check to the State Department, or schedule a visit to a passport agency. Now, many U.S. passport holders can renew online and pay by credit or debit card. Eligible applicants must be 25 or older, be renewing a passport issued between 2009 and 2015, and live in a U.S. state or territory. Applicants will also have to upload a digital passport photo. You must have your old passport in your possession.

It’s unclear if the online option will speed up passport processing, which the State Department advertises as generally taking six to eight weeks. (The State Department said in a news release on Wednesday that routine passport processing is currently well under this time frame.)

More states have issued mobile driver’s licenses, which are accepted at select airports.

Mobile driver’s licenses have proliferated; more than a dozen states , including California and Hawaii, now offer them. Other states say their versions are coming, among them Montana, New Mexico and West Virginia.

Some of these digital IDs can be downloaded to Apple or Google Wallets, while others, like New York State ’s mobile license, require you to download an app. For IDs stored in Apple Wallet, travelers can even show a license using an Apple Watch.

The Transportation Security Administration has a list of which state mobile driver’s licenses it accepts and where they are accepted. At T.S.A. security checkpoints, digital ID readers scan these mobile licenses.

The T.S.A. still encourages travelers to bring their physical IDs, in case a digital ID can’t be verified.

Real ID goes into effect on May 7, but it may take far longer for the program to be fully enforced.

After more than 15 years’ worth of delays , the deadline for Real ID, a security-enhanced driver’s license with higher standards for issuance, is in sight. The Department of Homeland Security says that travelers who want to use their driver’s licenses for domestic travel should update them by May 7, 2025. Real IDs are marked with a star — generally gold or black — and vary in appearance by state.

However, the T.S.A. recently proposed a rule to allow for a two-year transition to full enforcement of Real ID, saying that as of January, only about 56 percent of U.S. driver’s licenses were Real ID-compliant.

In the future: A digital ID from a passport?

Google announced that it would soon begin a test allowing some Android users to create digital IDs from their passports . These could be used at the same airports where the T.S.A. accepts mobile driver’s licenses, but it’s unclear how soon they could start being rolled out and how they would work for international travel.
