Rising up from the Fraser River and into the foothills of the Coast Mountain Range, Mission offers an awe-inspiring vantage point of the Fraser Valley. The abundance of our rivers, lakes and lands serve as a constant reminder of our deep-rooted history.

Attractions

Residents and tourists alike enjoy the natural setting and world-class attractions that the Mission has to offer.  Known for festivals, superb fishing, mountain biking, hiking, heritage and cultural sites, this Fraser River community has much to offer.

Steelhead Forest – Mona Lucas

The District of Mission is one of the few municipalities that manages its own forest resources. The Forestry Department maintains 13 recreation trails within the Municipal Forest for hiking, horseback riding or mountain biking. Our forestry trails are signed at the trail head and marked throughout the route with orange reflective markers.

Rolley Lake Provincial Park

Stroll around Rolley Lake and listen to wild birds as you take in forests and marshland boardwalks.  Swimming, fishing and canoeing are also great activities for this area. Allow approximately 1 hour for this predominately flat wilderness trail.

• Hayward Lake

Linked to Stave Lake Reservoir this BC Hydro owned property makes the ideal location for a family day out.  Hiking, boating, fishing, swimming  or relaxing by the beach are all on offer.  Try the 18 km loop around Hayward Lake that includes floating bridges and a waterfall (check the BC Hydro site for partial closures and trail information)

Stave Dam Forest Interpretation Trail

After traveling through the naturally regenerated forest, the interpretive loop at Stave Dam Forest peaks with a lookout that on a clear day can see vistas as far away as Vancouver Island. Well worth the 45 minutes and uphill ascent.

Fraser River Heritage Park

Fraser River Heritage Park is located at one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in the area overlooking the Fraser River. The park is located at the former site of St. Mary’s Mission for which the City of Mission is named.

The park is the site of many community activities, including weekly Wednesday and Friday evening concerts during the summer season.

Cascade Falls Regional Park

Cascade Falls – Mona Lucas

Cascade Falls Regional Park is a 22-hectare park  renowned for its spectacular waterfall which drops an impressive 30 meters into a large emerald pool, continuing on as Cascade Creek. With an ideal viewing location from the suspension bridge, which is just a 15 minute walk (mainly up stairs) from the parking lot.

Cascade Falls Park is a 14 km drive down Sylvester Road then turn right onto Ridgeview Road.

Mountain Biking

Due to Mission’s mountainous terrain and expansive Municipal Forest, the community offers a number of mountain bike friendly trails. These trails are primarily located within three trail networks: Bear Mountain, Red Mountain, and Heritage Mountain. Each of these locations offers trails of varying difficulty, providing suitable terrain for both beginners looking to ride their first trail and the most seasoned veterans looking for a real challenge.

Whether it’s the sandy beaches of Hayward Lake, the crystal clear canyon pools of Norrish, Lost, or Cascade Creeks, or the boat access shorelines of Stave Lake, Mission has many scenic destinations to canoe, kayak, paddle board, or just cool off at on a hot summers day.

Sturgeon Fishing – Doug Elias

The Fraser River offers no other angling opportunity quite as thrilling as fishing for a prehistoric monster — the White Sturgeon.

Known as the Sturgeon Capital of the World , the Mission section of the Fraser has the largest population of sturgeon. The fish can be caught year-round, though spring and fall are the prime times.

Anglers from around the world consider the Fraser River one of the top angling destinations for salmon. Approximately 60 per cent of all salmon in BC pass by Mission en route to their home waters.

Mission Art Gallery & Centre

Mission Arts Council – Maurice Motut

The Mission Art Centre houses a gallery, gift shop, and tearoom and offers unique exhibits from local and regional artists in a variety of media.  The exhibits change every two to three weeks year round.  The Gallery’s gift shop offers local goods crafted by artists, which include fiber arts, ceramics, jewelry, and more.

Hours of operation are Wednesday-Sunday 1:00pm to 4:00 pm.

Mission Museum

The Mission Museum tells the story of human occupation in Stó:lō traditional territory dating back over 9,000 years ago and continuing to the present day.

Historical stories feature the arrival of Father Fouquet and the establishment of St. Mary’s Mission as well as the story of Canada’s first train robbery by Billy Miner. Rotating museum exhibits highlight specific aspects of Mission’s past.

The Powerhouse at Stave Falls

Stave Falls Power House – Dale Klippenstein

Experience an authentic 1912 power generating station at the Powerhouse at Stave Falls , a National Historic Site of Canada.

The Powerhouse features five generators and turbines, a hall of antique electrical appliances, interpretive exhibits about the importance of electricity in British Columbia and hands-on science activities that explain how electricity is made for young and old alike.

Westminster Abbey

The working Benedictine monastery bell tower of Westminster Abbey can be seen for miles from locations east of Mission.

The Abbey welcomes visitors to its grounds, with a dress code – no shorts or overly exposed skin when entering the Abbey Church. Please be mindful that this serene setting is also a working monastery and seminary.

Be sure to take the 5-minute walk to the viewpoint where you can enjoy one of the Fraser Valley’s most spectacular views.

Public Recreation Facilities

The Mission Leisure Centre is a hub of leisure activities in Mission. Our comprehensive facility features pools, rinks, a curling facility, gymnasium, fitness studio, weight room, squash & racquetball courts, multipurpose rooms, a physiotherapy clinic and concession. So whenever you enjoy yoga or swimming, basketball or hockey, dancing or want to learn first aid, or simply enjoy a coffee and socialize with friends, there is something for everyone.

Mission Rotary Sports Park

Located on Oyama Street, the sports park boasts four baseball diamonds, four slo-pitch diamonds, four soccer fields, two all weather fields, field houses, parking, waste receptacles, washrooms, team rooms, referee rooms, concession, caretaker residence, parks signage, baseball and soccer storage and batting cage.

Water Spray Park

The Water Spray Park located on the Mission Leisure Centre grounds opens the Victoria Day long weekend and operates 10am – 8pm each day until the Labour Day weekend. It is also open on weekends only in September (weather permitting).

Lacrosse Box

The Lacrosse Box located in Centennial Park is available for drop-in play year round. It is ideal for lacrosse, ball hockey and basketball. For rental opportunities contact the Booking Clerk at 604-820-5368.

Tennis Courts

Centennial Park & Hillside Park feature tennis courts available for use free of charge on a first come, first serve basis. The Centennial Park Courts are reserved for the Mission Tennis Club from May – Sep on Tuesday & Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings. For more information on the Tennis Club, call 604-826-2586.

Mission Soap Box Garden

Since its inception in 1993, this community organic garden has been operated by numerous volunteers providing many with an opportunity for hands on participation in community gardening. The garden is located just above the Skate Park north of the Leisure Centre. The Garden is managed & maintained by the L.I.N.C. Society which donates a portion of the vegetables grown to the local food bank and food centre. Visitors are welcome. Contact Sherry or Glenn at 604-820-1015 or [email protected] for info.

Disc Golf Course

9 holes of disc golf are now available at Centennial Park. Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, players use a flying disc with the target being a chain basket. The Parks, Recreation & Culture department has worked in partnership with the Fraser Valley Disc Golf Club to set up the course which is open to play year round in the park. Access to the course is free and discs are available for purchase at the Leisure Centre.

Wellness Gym

You can now exercise in the fresh air year round! The Wellness Gym in Centennial Park is an accessible exercise hub with equipment and suggested exercises to guide your wellness journey. A great compliment for a walk in the park.

Off Leash Dog Park

Dogs are welcome on a leash in all Mission parks and are permitted off-leash in the designated off-leash dog park located at the north end of Centennial Park.

Mission golf & country club.

Established in 1960, the Mission course combines a demanding layout with attractive landscaping and thickly forested terrain to provide a truly challenging golf experience. It’s creatively designed 9 holes boasts a unique change of tee decks for your back nine. Paired with a wonderful clubhouse and banquet facility, Mission Golf & Country Club is one of BC’s most mature and well conditioned golf courses.

Cedar Ridge Golf Course & Driving Range

Cedar Ridge offers an excellent golf experience by providing guests with an 18-hole Par 3 golf course that can be enjoyed in less time than a full size course–while still providing challenges to the practiced golfer and attainable successes to the beginner. Meanwhile, the log-constructed driving range with heated stalls allows for year-round practice.

Public Transit

West coast express.

West Coast Express – Dale Klippenstein

As the home base of Translink’s commuter railway, Mission is the first stop in the morning and the last stop in the evening as the West Coast Express travels to and from Vancouver. The train closely follows the Scenic 7 route, making stops in Mission, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, Port Moody, and Vancouver.

Central Fraser Valley Transit System

BC Transit, through their Central Fraser Valley Transit System, provides regional bus and HandyDart services to the Abbotsford-Mission region. These transit services not only allow riders to get around Abbotsford and Mission, but it also allows them to travel between the two cities on its Valley Connector route. In addition, BC Transit’s Fraser Valley Express provides riders the opportunity to travel from Abbotsford to Chilliwack and Langley.

Mission Raceway Park

Mission Raceway Park – Dale Klippenstein

Mission Raceway Park is one of the fastest drag strips in all of Western Canada and the United States Northwest. The low elevation (24′ above sea level) boosts horsepower, making it one of the fastest tracks around.

Mission Raceway features some of the quickest dragsters on the planet with speeds in excess of 270 mph.  The drag strip provides safe, controlled racing conditions for those who range from casual hobbyists to internationally ranked professionals.  Drag racing runs from March until mid-October.  A road racing club and motocross bike racers also use the track on non-drag weekends.

Pismo City Beach is the main stretch of sand lining the downtown district and a very popular spot to enjoy the ocean. The Pismo Beach Pier juts into the Pacific Ocean here, standing as an iconic landmark of the city. It's also a popular pedestrian pathway for fishing, strolling, and photographing the long stretch of beach on either side.

Opposite the pier is a lively district filled with live music and lines outside of neighborhood restaurants. This trendy area is popular throughout the day and into the night. The Pismo Beach Promenade connects to the pier and this restaurant district, providing a vehicle-free pathway to navigate the rest of the beach.

Clam digging has always been popular on the beach, though special regulations now apply to protect the species, and those interested in harvesting need to obtain a license. Other popular activities on the beach include sand volleyball, kiteboarding, and taking long walks on the wide shoreline.

To access the quieter north end of the beach, a large wooden staircase owned by the city is found on Wilmar Avenue stretching down to the sand.

This 11-acre public park is a crown-jewel natural space of Pismo Beach and has an interesting history regarding a large concrete dinosaur that could be seen from the highway. The novelty dinosaur no longer exists at this city-owned space, but the stunning shoreline and natural features still make it one of the most popular oceanfront parks in the county.

A paved path makes its way around the perimeter of the park atop a high rugged bluff with generous views, revealing the many sea caves below. Other amenities at this ocean-front park include a popular playground area with unique amenities such as dinosaur and sea creature play structures, as well as decorative "dinosaur eggs" kids can crawl into.

Dinosaur Park is on the north side of the city, in the Shell Beach neighborhood of Pismo Beach. It also features rentable venue space including an amphitheater, reception area, and an ocean-vista ceremony space.

The Monarch Butterfly Grove is on the north end of Pismo State Beach, south of the Pismo Pier. It's an essential stop during annual monarch butterfly migrations. Between November and February , tens of thousands of monarch butterflies descend upon this natural shelter and literally overtake the branches of the surrounding eucalyptus and pine trees.

The Monarch Butterfly Grove is an amazing natural cycle and demonstration of long-distance migration. It's also a free and fun activity the whole family can enjoy.

Pismo State Beach stretches for miles along the coastline south of downtown, offering a wide variety of seaside activities. Surfing, swimming, suntanning, and all the usual beachside attractions are easily accommodated, as well as more unique things to do like clam digging, freshwater fishing, and sand dune exploring.

Pismo State Beach is also the only beach in California where visitors can drive onto the beach with off-road and personal vehicles. The Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA) allows trucks, four-wheelers, and other motorized vehicles to explore the abundant shore, including many enormous and shifting sand dunes.

Two campgrounds are available for tents and RVs at Pismo State Beach, with motorsports enthusiasts often filling the Oceano Campground to the south. The North Beach Campground , closer to downtown, features quieter surroundings and proximity to the Monarch Butterfly Grove also located within the park.

Spyglass is a quiet neighborhood park with ocean views. It features playground equipment, barbecue pits, and a large grassy area perfect for lawn games. However, one of the real appeals of this four-acre park is its mile-long stretch of beach, enabling activities like surfing, sunbathing, and tide pool exploring.

The trail leading down to the beach is steep and potentially difficult to navigate. High tide can make the trail inaccessible, making a tide chart handy to bring along when visiting the beach at Spyglass Park.

Oceano Dunes is on the south end of Pismo State Beach . It's a designated State Vehicular Recreation Area and unique as the only place in California where motor vehicles can access the beach.

Vehicles with four-wheel drive have a much easier time navigating the beach without the risk of getting stuck, and many visitors opt for ATVs, dune buggies, or motocross bikes to navigate the sprawling sand dunes. This unique SVRA status makes Oceano Dunes a very popular place to visit, especially on the weekends.

The unincorporated community of Avila Beach is just north of Pismo Beach, accessible with a short drive and turnoff from Highway 101. It's situated along the San Luis Obispo Bay shoreline with several scenic places to pull over and enjoy the view.

Many trips to Avila Beach center around the Avila Beach Pier and the adjacent shopping and restaurant district. Here, a supreme beach scene unfurls on either side of the pier, and a lively atmosphere emanates from the storefronts. And the nearby Central Coast Aquarium offers several hands-on exhibits to round out a visit.

The entire coastline along Avila Beach is worth a detour. To the west, Old Porte Beach and Fisherman's Beach offer seaside parking spots. And if you're coming from Pismo Beach, take some time to explore Smuggler's Cave and the adjacent Pirate Cove's Beach (clothing optional).

Pismo Beach Premium Outlets is accessible from the 101 in the southeast part of town. It features name-brand deals and nearly 40 stores offering discounts from their regular retail price. Parking is plentiful at Pismo Beach Premium Outlets, and most stores are open seven days a week.

Storefronts like the Nike Factory Store, Kate Spade, and Tommy Hilfiger are often reason enough to visit, with other popular retailers including Levi's, OshKosh B'gosh, and IZOD.

Avila Hot Springs is near Avila Beach and offers fun for the whole family. It features places to stay, play, and swim just northwest of Pismo Beach. The appeal of this public facility, situated atop a natural artesian mineral hot spring, comes from the heat and health benefits of the water.

The large freshwater heated swimming pool at Avila Hot Springs has plenty of space to splash around, and the 400-square-foot mineral pool at the facility reaches a muscle-soothing 104-degrees Fahrenheit.

Avila Hot Springs is open seven days a week. Day passes are available and dry camping and cabins enable overnight visits. Long-term cabin rentals are also available for those looking to stay for an extended time. Other amenities at Avila Hot Springs include swimming lessons, couples' massages, and bike rentals to cruise along the nearby Bob Jones Trail .

Palisades Park is a charming seaside park north of downtown, comprising six acres of ocean views. The park is neatly manicured with clean, cut grass and a mile-long pedestrian path, making it a popular place to visit for a picnic or leisurely stroll.

A playground at the park is popular with young children, and public tennis courts offer a fun way to volley near the ocean. Picnic tables and barbecue pits are also reservable at Palisades Park for large group activities.

Also known as the City to the Sea Trail , this paved bike path offers a great way to spend the afternoon exploring San Luis Obispo County. Starting near Avila Hot Springs , where bicycles are available to rent, the three-mile path lives up to its nickname as it heads to Avila Beach following San Luis Obispo Creek. Crossing scenic pedestrian bridges and escaping the sound of motor vehicles, the trail passes through a golf course before ending near the Avila Beach Pier.

Ebb Tide is a charming coastal park overlooking San Luis Obispo Bay near the Shell Beach neighborhood. It's accessible from Shell Beach Road, with limited parking at the cul-de-sac trailhead. Additional parking is available in large lots across Shell Beach Road.

The park navigates a modest open grassy space between residential units. Here, a beautiful view across the ocean accompanies almost every vantage point. This is a popular area to lay down a blanket and soak in the sun.

A steep staircase leads down to the beach at Ebb Tide Park. This long, skinny beach is easily walkable, and the rock protrusion on the south end reveals tide pools when the ocean is ebbing. Ebb Tide sees some crowds on the weekends but is relatively uncrowded for this part of the coast.

A few blocks from Spyglass Park in the Shell Beach neighborhood, Eldwayen Ocean Park is another popular community space. It spans over a mile along the coastline and features a manicured path atop a short ocean bluff. A steep set of stairs within the park accesses a sandy beach, where tide pools are exposed during low tide.

Every October, thousands of people flock to the shores and streets of Pismo Beach to celebrate the city's biggest event: The Pismo Beach Clam Festival. Entering its 73rd year of festivities in 2019, the Pismo Beach Clam Festival celebrates the natural bounty and unofficial pastime of Pismo Beach. Live music and three days of community flavor define much of the festival, as well as parades, surf competitions, and clam digs.

Margo Dodd is a lovely public space just north of Dinosaur Caves Park. It features a covered gazebo and stunning views of the coastline in both directions. There's beach access in the park, at the end of Pier Street, where some of the best tide pools in the area reveal themselves at low tide.

The stunning Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is one of the many top tourist attractions of San Luis Obispo and can be reached from Pismo Beach with a 15-minute drive.

Established in 1772, Mission San Luis Obispo was the fifth mission in California founded by Father Junipero Serra. Public and private services are still held in the historic mission, and an on-site museum details its centuries-long history. Many other scenic and historic attractions of San Luis Obispo are within walking distance of the Mission.

Morro Bay is another top destination in San Luis Obispo County, north of Pismo Beach, on the other side of Point Buchon. It takes less than 30 minutes to reach Morro Bay from Pismo Beach. And upon arriving, it's hard to miss Morro Bay's most defining feature: Morro Rock .

Morro Rock stands 581 feet tall just offshore from the city, providing a dominant landmark and home to nesting peregrine falcons. Although it is a historic monument , travelers might be a little disappointed after taking the long trip to South Dakota just to look at some faces carved into the rock , notes Thrillist . That’s not to say Lombard Street isn’t worth seeing. To make the most of Lombard Street, get out and walk the iconic winding brick road.

The famous road sees up to 350 cars per minute , adds Thrillist . Despite all the traffic and a slow five mph speed limit, driving down Lombard Street only takes a few seconds , and then you just drive off. Unless you have a passenger taking pictures of the San Francisco views, there’s nothing to remember this trip by other than boasting you drove down the street.

If it’s just pictures you’re after, then you’ll want to go early in the day before the daily line of cars begin making their way down, notes The Getaway . Although this stretch of road in San Francisco is an iconic part of the city (with over two million visitors a year!), you’d be better off seeing the majestic Golden Gate Bridge or traveling the Great Highway to take in the northern California coast.

6. Hollywood Walk of Fame

The sixth spot on the list of the most overrated tourist attractions in America is the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This attraction is nothing more than a bunch of dirty sidewalk panels with a slew of tourists vying for pictures of names on the concrete , explains Flannels or Flip Flops . There are many other ways to explore Tinseltown including hiking up to the Hollywood sign or catching a show at a small, intimate venue.
