Further Antagonism Towards Mathieu van der Poel as Spectator Throws Object at Wheels
Paris-roubaix incident follows earlier harassment at tour of flanders and other races..

Days after a police investigation was announced following incidents at the Tour of Flanders, Mathieu van der Poel faced further aggression from spectators at Paris-Roubaix .
The Dutchman was heading towards a solo victory on Sunday when a spectator appeared to throw a cycling cap towards his wheels. The incident happened with 42.2km remaining in the race and, fortunately, the object did not lodge in his spokes or his brakes.
Had they done so, it was possible that Van der Poel would have crashed.

Replays of the footage showed the person involved appeared to be an adult woman.

According to HLN.be, Van der Poel also had beer thrown at him on the Carrefour de l’Arbre sector of the race.
Earlier this week Belgian police said they were investigating aggression from spectators at the Tour of Flanders. Van der Poel had what appears to be beer thrown at him on at least two occasions on the Oude Kwaremont climb.
“We’re definitely taking it seriously,” police chief Joost Duhamel said, according to Het Nieuwsblad . “As a beer thrower, you can think that it is not easy to be found in such a crowd. But still, we have multiple witnesses. People who have seen it happen and who do not like this behavior.
“We get videos, and we are actively looking for images of the perpetrators. A man from our team is now working on that full-time and there is already a result.”
It is likely that similar action will be taken after the Paris-Roubaix incident.
Van der Poel has endured several such incidents in recent months.
In December he was competing in the Hulst World Cup cyclocross race and was filmed spitting at spectators on the final lap.
He said afterwards that they had been booing him during the race, and that he had experienced similar behaviour beforehand.
However a social media user suggested he faced more than verbal abuse: “Those Belgian ‘fans’ were throwing urine and beer at him. I stood next to them,” @Niomachiavelli claimed.
Van der Poel retweeted that message.
Asked about the latest incident on Sunday, the race winner did not want to get drawn into details.
“Those people have some frustration, I think. I don’t want to care about it much, and not pay attention,” he said, according to HLN.be .

Paris-Roubaix 2024: Mathieu van der Poel retains classic cycling title in style
A blistering attack 60km from the finish saw Mathieu van der Poel make it back-to-back wins in the Paris-Roubaix men's road cycling classic.
The Dutch star, who last weekend claimed a third victory in the Tour of Flanders , surged clear of the lead group at the start of sector 13 -- the sectors count down from 29 to one - of the cobbles.
And the reigning road race world champion was able to avoid mechanical mishaps on the infamous terrain, coming home exactly three minutes clear on Sunday (7 April 2024) in the hardest one-day race on the road cycling calendar.
Speaking after the race, van der Poel said of his break, "I just wanted to make the race hard from thereon because I know that’s my strength. I felt super good today. When I had the gap, I knew that it was a tailwind to the finish for the most part.
"You always know in Roubaix a puncture is never far away, but I had quite a gap and the car also behind me so I was confident. And I could really enjoy the moment more than I could last week. I was really at my limit last week but today I felt incredible and I could really enjoy the last part.”
He also gave thanks to his Alpecin-Deceuninck teammates, including second-placed Jasper Philipsen , saying, “I’m super proud of the boys and very happy to finish it off."
The 29-year-old is the first man since Tom Boonen in 2009 to win back-to-back Paris-Roubaix races, with the Belgian going on to claim a record-equalling four victories.
Van der Poel also became the eighth man to win the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix in the same year, a feat last achieved by Fabian Cancellara in 2013.
Fellow world champion Lotte Kopecky claimed the fourth edition of the women's 'Paris-Roubaix Femmes' race on Saturday.
Kopecky was in a group of six riders entering the the Roubaix Velodrome, and the Belgian outsprinted Elisa Balsamo to secure her first Paris-Roubaix triumph.

Van der Poel on top again despite course criticism
The build-up to the 119th edition of the 'Hell of the North' was dominated by concerns about crashes after a number of riders were injured in the Itzulia Basque Country race on Thursday.
Two-time reigning Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard suffered multiple injuries including a collapsed lung and broken collarbone, while Jay Vine avoided requiring spinal surgery having slid off into a concrete ditch.
The Australian will spend up to six weeks wearing a neck brace and is doubtful for both the Tour de France and the Olympic Games Paris 2024 .
Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic also face time on the sidelines after being caught up in the mass collision.
A new sharp U-turn was introduced on the Paris-Roubaix course this week to slow riders down before the Arenberg Forest section, a measure van der Poel had questioned on social media with the words, "Is this a joke?"
The 55.7km of cobbles in the 259.7km test are notoriously hard on both body and bike, but the pre-Arenberg chicane was free of incident. And the riders had not even reached the cobbles when a pile-up forced Elia Viviani to abandon.
The early cobbled sectors and strong winds triggered big splits in the peloton before the halfway stage.
Just after the Arenberg Forest section, a group of three made the first serious break with Stefan Küng , Nils Politt and van der Poel's Alpecin teammate Gianni Vermeersch going clear.
Tom Pidcock was among those working hard at the front of the pack, and the trio was soon reeled in before van der Poel made his decisive attack.
Denmark's former world road race champion Mads Pedersen tried to close the gap, but the presence of Alpecin riders Vermeesch and Philipsen in the chase group made his task almost impossible as van der Poel extended his lead to two minutes with 35km remaining.
Vermeesh was then dropped from the chase group, and New Zealander Laurence Pithie lost his front wheel on a bend transitioning from tarmac to the cobbles while in second place.
Despite a mighty effort, Pithie was unable to close the gap leaving Philipsen, Pedersen, Küng and Politt to fight it out for the podium places.
Philipsen attacked with 10km to go with Küng unable to go with him, but could not shake off the others.
Pedersen led the three into the velodrome, Politt moved alongside, but Philipsen found a gap down the inside to make it an Alpecin one-two ahead of the Dane with Politt fourth.

The Masters 2024: Matthieu Pavon in the spotlight ahead of realising Augusta dream
By Mathieu Wood
Golf reaches a wider audience when The Masters arrives, placing players at the front of the sports agenda. Even with his remarkable rise to prominence in recent months, Matthieu Pavon knows this is no ordinary week.
Having won his maiden DP World Tour title in Madrid in his 185th appearance last October, Pavon went on to secure dual membership status with the PGA TOUR, birdieing the final four holes at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai to cap a fine finish to the campaign.
He has since become the first French winner on the PGA TOUR since 1907 with his victory at the Farmers Insurance Open in January. “No words”, he said with a beaming smile in his immediate post-round interview after birdieing the final hole to win at Torrey Pines, California.
Pavon is now a member of the world’s golfing elite. After reaching a career-high in the Official World Golf Ranking, the French star has the keys to fulfil all his goals as he looks ahead to his first appearance at Augusta National.
“It [The Masters] is the week I have dreamt about for so many years,” he told the DP World Tour.
“It is the Major that I want to win the most. It is also the history of the Green Jacket, and it looks pretty on some of the winners’ shoulders!"
🏆 DP World Tour win 🪪 PGA TOUR dual membership 🏆 PGA TOUR win All in three months. The journey was long. Bravo @matthieupavon 👏 https://t.co/AOcNz8Zsjy — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) January 28, 2024
A week on from his first practice round at the famed Georgia venue, in the company of Major winner Shane Lowry , the excitement for World Number 25 Pavon is clear to see. And so it should be.
It's a long way from when he was struggling to make an impression as an amateur, and then when he first set out as a professional in 2013.
“I am at the spot that I dreamt about for so many years," he added.
"Yes, of course, it took me 10-11 years to get there but it is all about the journey and the process. It doesn’t matter to me if it comes to me in four or 11. It was just a matter of time.
"I feel really prepared after those 11 long years to get to this spot and now I am ready to stay there."
I am at the spot that I dreamt about for so many years
In what can be a solitary sport, travelling the world away from family, Pavon is thrilled at the prospect of sharing his long-awaited Masters debut with those who mean the most to him.
His mother, Beatrice, is a golf instructor while his father, Michel, won France’s top-tier division in football with Bordeaux during a 15-year playing career before moving into coaching. Both are on site in Georgia along to support their son, along with Matthieu's brothers.
"My mum and dad went to the Masters in 2009, 15 years ago," he said. "It will be nice to share some time with them.
"I know that they really liked it and they dreamt that I could get there and play one day. I am bringing all my family.
"There is a fellow Frenchman who is coming too, Adrien Saddier (fellow DP World Tour member). He wanted to come and see the practice rounds so he will be with me until Wednesday. I think it is going to be a lot of fun."
During his parents' visit to Augusta National, his mum buried a coin on the grounds as a good luck charm with the hope her son would one day play at the famed Georgia venue.
While, Pavon has no intention of specifically looking for the coin, he does intend to do something similar for his two-year-old son.
"I think it's part of the story, and it's only better that that coin maybe stays here forever," he said.
"The only thing we're going to do now is probably I'm going to get a coin myself, bury it somewhere for maybe wishing that my son one day will come as a player over here."
"I don't know if he wants to play golf. It doesn't matter. But maybe I wish that. It would be fun if in the next 20, 30 years my son gets here as a player. That would be an awesome story."
“He writes the history of male French golf!” The French announce call for @MatthieuPavon ’s first TOUR win is electric. @CanalPlusGolf | @AdrienToubiana pic.twitter.com/wY3KqvpYHz — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) January 28, 2024
L'Équipe – the French nationwide daily newspaper devoted to sport – dedicated a section of its weekend supplement on Saturday to Pavon, just days ahead of the first men's Major of the season.
The last golfer to be on the front cover of the L'Équipe magazine was Céline Boutier last September, two months on from her maiden Major Championship victory on home soil at The Evian Championship.
While he is not a Major winner yet, Pavon will be hoping to generate more headlines this week after his history-making exploits so far this year.
Just like Boutier, Pavon's career has reached new heights in recent times after years of perseverance and playing out of the spotlight. No longer.
He will be a headline draw on home soil later this year when the FedEx Open de France heads to Le Golf National. Before that, he is set to represent his country in a home Olympic Games this summer at the 2018 Ryder Cup venue.
Pavon has made four previous Major starts in his career, with his best a tie for 25th in the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.
So, what has the 31-year-old learned from his past experience of playing in what are the biggest weeks in golf?
"These tournaments are special," he replied. "They are supposed to be the toughest all year.
"It’s really about how you manage yourself. How mentally you can be prepared to to that event and also how good your attitude can be.
"The key in mind is to be super positive and patient during weeks like this."
Recognising history, with Fuzzy Zoeller the last rookie to win the Masters in 1979, Pavon is aware of the challenge he faces, having enjoyed some pre-tournament practice at Augusta National early last week.
"The more you play it, the better you get over there," added Pavon, who cites Tiger Woods' memorable chip-in during the final round in 2005 as his first Masters memory.
"It is really tricky around the greens. There are lots of elevations. The greens are fast, so there are spots you can’t be and some others that you better find.
"It is all about course management and being very precise with your iron play."
Now, the notion that Augusta National is a course that suits drawers of the golf ball is often remarked.
As a result, for a player who typically works the ball from left-to-right instead, Pavon has been honing in on ensuring he is best equipped to summon both shapes on call with the support of his coach Jamie Gough, who works with several leading golfers, including fellow Masters participant Ryan Fox.
"I am a fader of the ball, but I think Jack Nicklaus was too and he won a couple of Masters! he said with a smile.
"It’s all about getting a couple reps playing some draw shots. I have worked on it over the years with my coach Jamie and I know how to draw the ball but practicing a few extra draw shots on the range could help for sure.
"Jamie is pretty big to me. We have changed my swing over the years. I wanted to get rid of the left side of the golf course, so we had to make a few technical changes.
"Jamie is super nice, he always finds some super simple exercises that you can repeat every day and makes me better all the time and this is what we did together."
All his hard work has led him to this. Amid all the pre-event attention, Pavon is intent on ensuring he doesn't get caught up in the excitement and focuses on the values that have enabled him to take recent big steps forward in his career development.
"I am trying to treat this tournament the same way I prepare for every other. I think that is key," he said.
"If you put too much expectation or too much pressure on yourself on those big tournaments that is when you get caught a little bit uneven."

‘We take the risks’: Van der Poel believes riders are biggest danger in cycling
- Jonas Vingegaard taken to hospital after crash on Thursday
- Dutchman aiming to successfully defend Paris-Roubaix title
Mathieu van der Poel, who aims to retain his Paris-Roubaix title on Sunday, says riders are the main danger when it comes to race safety.
Thursday’s stage four in the Tour of the Basque Country was marred by a horrific crash in which Jonas Vingegaard broke a collarbone and several ribs and also sustained a pulmonary contusion and a pneumothorax. The crash happened at a turn on a high-speed descent and the race leader, Primoz Roglic, was forced to abandon, while Remco Evenepoel suffered a fracture to his right collarbone and his right shoulder blade.
“I think the most dangerous part of cycling is the riders themselves,” the Dutchman told a press conference for Sunday’s race. “We take the risks and that’s the main problem, everyone wants to be at the front in the same place and it’s not possible. We can change a lot of things to make it better, but it’s never going to be completely secure.”
Van der Poel won his third Tour of Flanders last Sunday , and this weekend the world champion is favourite for Paris-Roubaix as he seeks to defend the title. Race organisers have implemented a chicane in an effort to slow the riders down as they head into the notorious cobbled Trouée d’Arenberg, one of the most dangerous sections of the Hell of the North. After the change was announced a few days before the race, Van der Poel responded to a video of the chicane posted on social media platform X by asking: “Is this a joke?” – and the rider is still not convinced.
“I think it’s good that they’re trying something. But in my opinion, the chicane is not the right solution and also to do it in the week before the race is not the best option either,” he said. “Obviously, it’s one of the most dangerous places of the season, so it’s good that they’re thinking about change, but for me change isn’t always the best thing to do. If you go into Arenberg in 20th position, it’s pretty good, you’re still in the race, but if you go into the chicane in 20th position, I think everyone who is after positions five to 10 will get stuck and then you easily lose 30 seconds.”
Van der Poel’s belief that riders themselves are the biggest danger will not, however, see him change his tactics for the race as he pursues his sixth Monument title. “Like I said, the riders are the main issue, but I’m also joining the party, if you want to win, you have to be where everyone wants to be at the crucial moments.”
