Mackinac Island Pictures

Mackinac Island pictures are the quintessential American summer we are all seeking. Mackinac Island is located in Northern Michigan between the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan. What gravitates people towards this magical island could be attributed to the smell of fudge . Others might say because no cars are allowed on the island or that everything is done by horse and carriage, on foot or on a bike . Which ever you decide, this storybook island is going to capture your heart.

Mackinac Island pictures are always stunning to see. You could not take a bad photo of this island if you tried because it is THAT beautiful.

Looking over Mackinac Island

One of the very first Mackinac Island pictures I take is on approach to the island. When taking the ferry from Mackinaw City, arriving to Mackinac Island is a coastline of stunning homes and boats. You can see through imagery just how incredible this small 8 mile circumference island is in Lake Huron.

I have never flown to Mackinac Island because the ferry is easier, but I would love to see an overview of the island. If I get the chance to do that I will update these Mackinac Island pictures because I would want to share that experience with you! Due to the airport on the island being so small, it is limited to very small aircraft.

Mackinac Island

As far as Mackinac Island pictures go, the best place to catch a sunrise above all is on the lawn of Mission Point Resort . Adorned with Adirondack chairs, you can’t help but be taken aback by how beautiful Lake Huron lights up in the morning sky. If you are lucky, you will find these incredible hues of purple and pink, so enjoy it while you can.

Mackinac island pictures

Mackinac Island Sunrise

So I gave you the best sunrise, but now you must know where to see the best sunset! Mackinac Island pictures are what dreams are made of when it comes to these hues. A favorite spot to see the sunset is at the Grand Hotel  on their front porch. The front porch of the Grand Hotel is actually over 600 feet long overlooking the Lake and grounds.

There are other amazing spots to see the sunset all around the west coast of the island. There is a walking and biking path for you to get as many Mackinac Island pictures as you wish.

Fun fact: Mackinac Island does not allow cars on the island (unless you are law enforcement) and I have only ever once seen a fire truck. The easiest way for people and goods to be transported without walking, is by horse and carriage. The taxi service on Mackinac Island is a horse drawn carriage, same with the carriage tour .

Mackinac island pictures

Mackinac Island pictures all include fudge at some point. One simply doesn’t visit Mackinac Island and NOT eat fudge. You can smell it from the ferry. Last I checked there were about 17 fudge shops on the island. You cannot miss it.

Walking or biking around the coastline leaves many opportunities to get epic Mackinac Island pictures. For example, this shot of Lake Huron during the sunset. Whether you choose to walk or bike the island, you can stop anywhere along the path and take photos.

Mackinac island pictures

One could argue that the best Mackinac Island pictures are taken right on the main drag. The second you get off the ferry you can see all the stunning homes and bed and breakfasts . These properties will be the real sell on convincing you that you need to live on the island, as a result, people end up returning year after year.

Island House

Mackinac Island pictures from summer and fall. This gorgeous island in Northern Michigan looks like it is from a fairy tale.

There are a lot of gorgeous finds on Mackinac Island, and directly off. For example, Round Island Passage Lighthouse and because the sun is setting, there are some beautiful hues! You could walk the Main Street because its mostly flat, from end to end and take 500 pictures easily.

Mackinac island pictures

If you are planning to visit Mackinac Island I recommend staying a night at the Grand Hotel because it is a masterpiece. No two rooms within the hotel are the same, the food is sensational and its a true luxury property. In the evening proper attire is required at the hotel and its a time old tradition that guests appreciate. If you are not a guest of the hotel you will not be able to get indoor photos because you are not staying there. However, you can pay a small fee to enter.

Grand Hotel

Sailing is popular on Mackinac Island because of the surrounding Great Lakes. Each year they have the races and for the rest of the year boaters come through until it gets cold. You would be hard pressed to find a Mackinac Island picture of the main street and no boats present unless it was winter and the water was frozen.

One of my favorite Mackinac Island pictures is from up in the island and sun beams are beating down through the trees. The island is yours to explore. Take a bike, walk or even the island tour. There is a lot to be seen and learned beyond the main street.

Mackinac Island Pictures: Fall

Just recently I experienced Mackinac Island for the first time in the fall. The weather is not very predictable and it was a bit cold, but my Mackinac Island pictures come out quite lovely. The leaves were changing, the island wasn’t as crowded and there was still plenty of daylight.

Mackinac Island Pictures: Locations and Events

There is always something happening on Mackinac Island because it is a seasonal destination. Therefore everyone flocks from late April to early November for their holiday. Book your trip to Mackinac Island in advance because it is a small island with limited lodging and often rooms are sold out. However, if you just want to visit for a day, you can take a ferry both ways very easily. Just purchase a round trip same day ticket and park at the ferry terminal.

If you are planning to visit Mackinac Island and want to get your own pictures, here are the best places and some of the top events of the summer season.

Locations for Mackinac Island Pictures:

  • Sunrise at Mission Point Resort Lawn
  • Sunset either on the deck of the Grand Hotel or on the walking path off the main street
  • Boats along the front drag of the island
  • Michigan Governor’s summer residence
  • Butterfly House
  • Fort Mackinac
  • Sugar Loaf Point Lookout
  • Doud’s – the countries oldest grocery store
  • Kayakying around the island

Events for Mackinac Island Pictures:

  • Mackinac Island Lilac Festival
  • Taste of Mackinac
  • Lilac Festival Grand Parade
  • Mackinac Island Fireworks
  • BELL’S BEER Bayview Mackinac Race
  • Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac
  • Mackinac Island Fudge Festival
  • Mackinac Island Halloween Weekend
  • Great Turtle Trail Run

If you are planning to take your own Mackinac Island Pictures, here is some gear I suggest!

  • A Canon camera – I shoot with this camera because it is lightweight, affordable and takes high quality images.
  • A memory card to store your photos
  • A back-up for your photos – don’t forget to back them up everyday because I lost over 7,000+ photos once!

WOW! Very beautiful!

Thank you for your practical photo suggestions. I am a Catholic priest and landscape photographer. Question. Once you arrive by ferry how does do you travel to Arch Rock and Sugar Loaf Point Lookout. If I have two days to visit where would you suggest most economical place to stay. B&B is OK.

' src=

Thanks for stopping by, Matt!

The best way to see Arch Rock in my opinion is to take the Carriage Tour – and that will take maybe an hour to get there? Otherwise I think you can walk there in about 30-45 minutes. Alternatively you could take a bike or taxi.

Most economical would be a BnB. Prices are so different around the island. I would suggest going during the week when there is not a huge festival (like the Lilac festival) or during a holiday. Also, the closer to the begining and end of the season is where the best deals are. If you go during the height of the summer you will pay a premium.

La Brea Creator Explains That Game-Changing Time Travel Twist in Season 3

The third season of La Brea just introduced a major twist that could change everything.

macken travel

Spoiler warning! Spoilers below for La Brea's Season 3 episode, "Don't Look Up"

Surprise! In La Brea's latest episode, "Don't Look Up," creator David Appelbaum introduces another level of time travel to the story as Ty Coleman (Chiké Okonkwo) is back in Los Angeles not long before the sinkhole disaster, and he's got to find a way to find an answer now to getting his friends out of 10,000 B.C.. What does he do?

How to Watch

Watch  La Brea  on NBC  and  Peacock .

He finds Dr. Sam Velez (Jon Seda) at his hospital and gives him a list of imminent predictions to secure his trust and help. It works like a charm and that spurs them to bail out Gavin Harris (Eoin Macken) from the drunk tank so they can find out more about the organization where Maya Schmidt (Claudia Ware) is located.

To get some insight into this twist, and some other key character moments,  NBC Insider  got Appelbaum and cast members Eoin Macken, Zyra Gorecki, Jon Seda and Chiké Okonkwo chime in to provide their thoughts on this packed episode.

La Brea  creator David Appelbaum explains the new time travel twist

Gavin Lucas and Scott walk through woods on Episode 302 of La Brea

The whole premise of La Brea centers on portals that allow humans to travel back in time. But having the seasoned, present-day versions of characters go back in time to just before the pilot of the series and see their former selves is a new wrinkle that really emphasizes how much has changed in three seasons.

"What we really liked about going to that time period is that there's a sense that you've learned so much about these characters over the first few seasons. And then to go back to the point in time, when Sam and Gavin hadn't gone through any of that change before, we found to be a really exciting idea," Appelbaum explained. "And there'll be other characters that will meet along the way as well. In wrapping things up, there's a sense of full circle-ness that you really get which was the really exciting part of that story."

Asked if the whole idea of paradoxes — having a character change something in the past that affects the future — was something he and the writers worried over, Appelbaum said yes and no. "I think the goal with all the time travel stories is they're a lot of fun. But with time travel there's also the danger of it becoming confusing," he said. "So that's what one of the things we tried to just avoid, and to just make it as clean and simple as possible. And even if you're not a genre fan — which I am and a lot of our writers are — that you can still understand.

RELATED:  Tiny Back to the Future Easter Eggs You Almost Certainly Never Spotted Finally Revealed

"Everyone understands Back to the Future, " he cited. "You don't have to be a genre fan to like a story like that. But there are some stories that get into the particulars of the rules and we really wanted to avoid things like that."

What Eoin and Chike thought about this new time travel wrinkle

Asmara Feik as Petra, Nicholas Gonzalez as Levi, Chiké Okonkwo as Ty, Eoin Macken as Gavin, and Rohan Mirchandaney as Scott in La Brea 301

It's a big challenge to ask actors to play two versions of themselves, but the La Brea actors tasked with that Season 3 assignment were all enthusiastic about getting to revisit their former selves.

"It was the reason to do the job for me," Okonkwo admitted with enthusiasm. "When you start with the first scene, Ty's a guy who's struggling with his mental health and thinking about taking his own life. That, I feel, is the best way to open a chapter for a character. Because it meant that I had to work out who this person was, work out how to get him back from that point, to being part of this great society in the sinkhole with the others. He really had to find some meaning in his life. And honestly, that was the gift of the job for me, to be able to work out how to go from one pole to the complete opposite one. In Season 3, that only becomes even more with jumping between times and trying to do what's right for his friends, and also do what's right for his family and the people he loves down in the sinkhole."

Macken agreed, even if he added that it got a bit confusing at times. "I thought that was a really interesting methodology to bring those narratives together. Myself and Chiki and Jon enjoyed that because it allowed us to have an understanding of where the characters were initially. And then also you got to see an extremist where they are now. It actually became quite fun. I think it gave an extra dimension to what the show is, and added these layers to it which was probably important for Season 3 because it opens up the whole lore of what La Brea is, in terms of what it still could be and what it kind of became. It's not that often you get to go deeper into a backstory of your original character. They're already situated on the page, and then you got to go back and explore it further."

Jon Seda and Eoin Macken on their dad growth

La Brea 302 Dr Sam Gavin

"Don't Look Up" features one of Jon Seda's favorite scenes of the whole season, when Sam and Gavin get really honest with one another in the cell about their fears and growth as parents during this crazy set of survival circumstances. "We're talking about our kids," he said. "At first we're going out each other and then we're understanding each other so we have a heart-to-heart. That to me was a real relatable scene, I think for many people. For Eoin and myself to be able to have a chance to really show that on the show, I think was was a great moment."

That talk then dovetails into Gavin apologizing to Izzy for not communicating with her, and not really seeing her for the woman she is growing into. "Gavin has to adapt to how Izzy's character is developing which becomes really important," Macken said of their character's maturing relationship. "Their relationship starts to change from what it was in Season 1 to now because she's naturally older, and they've gone through so many things. I think that was something that we're able to really put a nice button on [for them]."

Zyra Gorecki discusses Izzy finding her path in 10,000 B.C.

Leyla watches Izzy shoot an arrow on La Brea Episode 302.

Izzy gets to channel her inner Katniss Everdeen as she awkwardly battles to master the bow and arrow to be a more useful member of the community. Through her testy relationship with Leyla (Edyll Ismail), Izzy finds her center and gains a lot of confidence in her potential, which actress Zyra Gorecki said was very welcome to play.

"With Izzy and her character arc, she's obviously growing up," she said. "When you see her for the first time, she's 16-years old. She's done a lot of growing up in a very short period of time. All of her relationships around her have changed so drastically, with her father, with her Uncle Levi, with her mom, and brother. Everyone around her has changed so drastically. She's just sitting there trying to figure everything out, while also growing up and being in 10,000 B.C."

Watch new Season 3 La Brea episodes every Tuesday night at 9/8c on  NBC . You can currently stream Seasons 1 and 2 of La Brea on  Peacock .

How travel inspired an entrepreneur to create a surf luggage company

Ken Macken is a serial entrepreneur who had been running his own companies for nearly ten years. But after a workaholic lifestyle led him to burnout and a relationship breakdown in his mid-30s, he took some time out to travel.

An avid surfer and kiteboarder, Ken used his travel career break to seek out the best wind and wave spots around the world. The experience made him realise the need for durable surf luggage, and so after returning home to Australia he founded Mile High Luggage, which he now runs while living on the Sunshine Coast.

In this interview, Ken discusses the reasons behind his career break, what he learned from travelling, the inspiration for his new company, and how he has readjusted his work–life balance.

What was your life and career situation before you took a travel break?

My life was very different. I was working 12–16 hours a day 6–7 days a week in my own companies for almost a decade. I have always loved what I do, and have followed my passion in my career which has allowed me to live in different countries and meet some amazing people.

I love learning and applying what I learn. Continuously challenging myself and exploring new ideas with like-minded people.

Why did you decide to take a travel career break?

My life was work work work, and not many vacations or time with my partner, which resulted in me suffering from burnout in my mid 30s. This was an eye-opener for me, as my company and relationship all ended at the same time.

But instead of letting this get me down, I took the option to have some time to myself and travel. All I knew was that I wanted to go kiting somewhere where it was windy, and surfing where there were waves.

What arrangements did you make with your workplace before you left for the trip?

I was fortunate enough to have a little money, and my last company was wound down, so it was easy for me to make the decision to pursue travel. Initially I thought it would be for three months, which has turned into a passion of travel and exploring the world.

What inspired you to focus the trip on surfing and kiteboarding?

I have always loved being in the ocean, and I started to get into kiteboarding the year before I started my travels. I wanted to get better at it and I knew there was a community of people that followed the wind around the world, so I decided to do the same.

Substituting the corporate life to hop around the world’s best coastal adventure spots must have been a seismic change. How did it feel to be cut loose?

So, so good. Best decision ever! The ability to view the world and meet the people was amazing.

I had travelled a lot in my past life, but that was for conferences, meetings and seeing suppliers, which never allowed me to see much more than a hotel room or the odd bar. This new way of traveling allowed me to immerse myself in the culture and people of all these destinations.

Were there any difficult aspects of travelling long-term, and if so, how did you adapt?

You have to learn how to travel with the bare minimum, or it will cost you a fortune in luggage fees or transport costs. I downsized to a kite/surf bag (size of a golf bag), carry-on bag and a backpack. That was it. Not having all your regular things is a bit annoying at first, but you quickly realise you can make do without.

What did you learn from your travels that you would never have learned otherwise?

I learned that travelling alone with no agenda or timeline is such a fantastic way to enjoy your life. I have always travelled with someone or for some specific reason, which kept me on a rigid itinerary. Having the time to just relax and enjoy my own company was something I desperately needed to do.

What inspired you to set up a surf luggage company?

I was tired of opening up my soft kite/surf bag and finding my boards damaged. Cracks, dings and fractures all from the handling during transport. It didn’t matter how I packed it or how much foam padding I crammed into it, they would find a way to damage my gear.

This meant I would have to repair my boards before I could go on the water. Nothing worse than showing up at a destination with beautiful peeling waves and you can’t go out.

I spoke to hundreds of people and the majority of them experienced the same issue. Months of talking to potential customers, the airline industry and insurance companies gave me clarity on what was needed. So Mile High Luggage was conceived, and I developed a lightweight yet incredibly strong board case that would protect our precious sticks when we travel.

Why did you decide to embark on a completely new career direction after your travels?

I have always worked in manufacturing and had my own companies so I knew why, how and what to do to pursue and tackle this market. I was working within a niche of a niche of a market that I knew incredibly well that was underserved. This was a problem I was personally facing and nothing was going to change anytime soon unless I pushed this forward. So I did.

Living and working on Australia’s sunshine coast sounds like a dream, but are there any downsides to this lifestyle?

Noosa and the Sunshine Coast region is truly a magical place to live. We have beautiful beaches, warm water, peeling waves and wind all summer, which makes for a dreamy place to work from.

This does come with some downsides, as it is a small town with limited services available in the manufacturing industry. But, having a solid background in global manufacturing sourcing and a large network of people, and staff helping me in other continents, has helped me eliminate a lot of issues most others would face tackling a new company like this from a small coastal town.

I produce my bags in Australia from as many locally sourced components as possible. This allows us to ensure short lead times in production and also maintain extremely high quality control.

How do you balance managing your business with other things you enjoy in life?

My work is super important to me as it always has been, but I am no longer doing the 16-hour, seven-day weeks like I did in the past. I balance my time with going for a surf in the morning and/or a kite in the afternoon while trying to stick to an eight-hour work day (some days work requires me more).

This has helped me stay relaxed, focused and happy with my time I put not only into work but also myself, which then makes me more productive.

What advice would you give to other people considering taking time off work to travel?

Do it! You will not regret it. The only problem you will face is that you might not want to stop travelling. Don’t put it off. Pack your bag (preferably a Mile High Surfcase) and start your adventure.

‘La Brea’: Eoin Macken Says Time-Travel Rules ‘Start to Make Sense’ in Season 2

Zyra Gorecki as Izzy Harris in La Brea Season 1

Fall Preview

  • ‘La Brea’ Boss Details His Ideas for a Revival
  • ‘La Brea’ Boss Answers Series Finale Burning Questions

Last fall’s No. 1 new drama in the 18–49 demo — about Angelenos sucked through a sinkhole into 10,000 B.C. — returns with a mess of loose ends to tie up. In La Brea Season 1, de facto leader Eve Harris ( Natalie Zea ) saw an interdimensional portal blip away her teenage son Josh ( Jack Martin ) and his gal pal Riley (Veronica St. Clair), with quiet 12-year-old Lilly (Chloe De Los Santos) trailing behind.

Elsewhere, Eve’s estranged husband Gavin ( Eoin Macken ) and their daughter Izzy (Zyra Gorecki) — joined by the grown-up Lilly, known as Ella ( Michelle Vergara Moore ) — leaped into a Seattle sinkhole that sent them back to the time of woolly mammoths… but miles away from their loved ones. And those were just the major shockers.

Heading into La Brea Season 2, here are a few answers we need ASAP, answered by creative team and cast.

How does the season pick up?

In the opener, titled “The Next Day,” Josh and Riley “wake up in 1988 and realize they’re stuck there,” previews showrunner David Appelbaum. “One of their main obstacles is how are they going to get back to their families in 10,000 B.C.?” While in the time of compact discs and Cheers , though, they’re drawn into a mystery tied to “one of the central questions of the series: Why do these sinkholes exist?”

Will the time-travel rules finally be explained?

“It starts to all make sense,” confirms Macken, who was as curious as viewers have been. “I was like, ‘How is this gonna coalesce?’ Once it does, it’s pretty cool.”

'La Brea' Unveils Time-Bending First Look at Season 2

'La Brea' Unveils Time-Bending First Look at Season 2

Are there others who have fallen through sinkholes?

Yep, and they do not come in peace. “We meet a new and dangerous group who become one of our main antagonists,” Appelbaum says. A new character played by Jonno Roberts ( Wrecked ) has been described as “a brilliant scientist and businessman who just might be trying to save the world.”

With enough hubris, he could fit into that group. But villain or hero, he sounds like a prime candidate to be in that strange tower that secretive Rebecca Aldridge (Ming-Zhu Hii) showed survivor Scott ( Rohan Mirchandaney ).

What’s the danger level?

High! First: more prehistoric beasts! And as Gavin, Izzy, and Ella trek from Seattle to L.A. and Eve’s camp endures more threats, Macken says with a laugh that we should expect the worst.

“David Appelbaum is a ruthless storyteller when it comes to where characters go and what happens and who may live or die. I’ll just say that!”

Why use a travel agent?

We can think of a million reasons why you should book with a Maven Travel agent! But, here are the best reasons- we love what we do and are trained on many different aspects of this business! Plus we have built relationships with our suppliers, hotel management teams, and cruise business development managers to keep us in the know! We are travelling ourselves to do site inspections and experience these properties and ships firsthand, as well as attending trainings on various destinations.  Planning a cruise, tour, resort/hotel stay or booking airfare is not a one size fits all option. We customize your trip to fit your needs and budget! Just as you would go to a dentist to fix a cavity or hire an electrician to wire your home, using a travel professional takes the guess work out of planning your next trip! If there is an issue before, during, or after your trip, we are here to handle the details, 24/7. When you book with us, you will have the personal phone number of your travel professional to contact them directly, not a call center where you will be on hold for hours on end talking to a stranger! Many people have the misconception that using an agent is more expensive than booking it yourself. However, that is not necessarily true! We are paid by our affiliates and tour operators to handle all the details of booking your vacation. We take it personally when you entrust us to plan your well-deserved getaway!  You are our Maven Travel family!

Passport Book vs Passport Card

Many of our clients ask us this question. A passport book is the best option for any type of travel! The passport card was designed for the specific needs of northern and southern (Canada & Mexico) U.S. border communities with residents that cross the border frequently by  land . The passport  book  is the   only  document approved for international air travel. Many countries require at least 6 months validity left on your passport expiration date for entry.  For further details about applying or renewing a US passport, please visit  https://travel.state.gov/ content/travel/en/passports. html

Do I need travel protection insurance?

The short answer –  YES!  We always recommend purchasing travel protection. Many suppliers have cancellation penalties. If you need to cancel your vacation due to an unexpected event, travel protection can help you to recoup any money that you may have lost due to those penalties being assessed. Also, many people do not realize that when you are traveling outside of the state/country, your current health insurance will likely not be accepted should you need medical attention while on your trip. Just like car insurance, you never know when you might need it, until you do! We work with our supplier insurance and with a 3 rd party company, Travel Safe, to offer our clients many different coverage options. To explore the policies that are offered through Travel Safe, or to purchase a policy to protect your vacation investment, please visit TravelSafe.com or ask your travel professional.

How will I know what the covid rules are for my destination?

One thing that has been consistent through this whole time of the pandemic is that rules and protocols can change at a moment’s notice! Vaccinated? Not Vaccinated? Covid Testing Required?  We are here to help you navigate through all the details to make your trip enjoyable from start to finish! For more guidance, please visit  https://www.cdc.gov/ coronavirus/2019-ncov/ travelers/index.html

Are there other travel restrictions to be concerned about?

There are some restrictions for those who have a felony, DUI conviction, or are delinquent in paying their child support obligation to name a few. Travelers are responsible for understanding the travel restrictions pertaining to the offense. Please reference the website for the country that you will be visiting as well as the US State Department website  https://travel.state.gov/ content/travel.html  for further details about any destination.

Can I book excursions before my trip?

If exploring & adventure are on your to do list while you are on vacation, we have a few options. While there are usually many different tour companies to book through at the resort or onboard the ship, sometimes they will sell out. If there’s something that’s on your bucket list that you’d really like to experience, we recommend booking ahead of time by using the links we have provided! * Please note, the cancellation details for each excursion listed in the tour operator’s website prior to booking.*

What Our Clients Say

I know that contacting Maven Travel was the best decision we made during these Covid times. April was able to narrow down our search by the things the matter the must to us as we travel to celebrate our wedding anniversary! Even as flights got changed before our trip, April was able to make new arrangements for us. The Secrets Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa – Unlimited-Luxury had everything to offer, was running at a 40% capacity and the staff was great, friendly and made us feel at home for a full week. We also had access to the the Breathless Riviera Maya, we definitely had best of both worlds. Our ocean front room was to die for, literally the best views, day and night. We would give Maven Travel service 5  ⭐ ️ ⭐ ️ ⭐ ️ ⭐ ️ ⭐ ️ ! Can’t wait to plan my next getaway!

– Silvia S.

Thank you for the excellent job you did coordinating and planning our California vacation.  We had a great time and everything went smoothly, from the limo pickup,  our flights, rental car,  and limo drop off.  Working with you was so easy and you communicated so quickly and effectively. Again, thank you, we had great fun, and we certainly will recommend you and Maven Travel to our friends and family!

Toby & Vicki

Our vacation was wonderful! We definitely needed it and enjoyed every minute! Thank you so much for all your help we couldn’t have been happier!!!
