2022 Easter Jeep Safari Concepts Invade Moab Packing EV Power

2022 Eater Jeep safari

For over 80 years, Jeep has worked hard to maintain its spot atop the off-road hierarchy. Currently a part of the Stellantis empire, Jeep continues to forge ahead, blending proven hardware and capability with rapidly emerging EV technology. Confident that electrification can be a vital part of the brand’s future, Jeep is bringing five fully operational and off-road-ready EV-enabled concepts to the 2022 Easter Jeep Safari, April 9-17 in Moab, UT, to prove their mettle.

Hosted by the Red Rock 4-Wheelers club, the annual Easter Jeep Safari (otherwise known as EJS) draws thousands of Jeepers for a week of fun and sun while driving on Moab’s famous red slick rock. “What a better place to show these new concepts than at Easter Jeep,” said Jim Morrison, Senior Vice President and Head of Jeep Brand North America. “It’s with those that we’ll be able to push the limits to even more and get [customer] feedback. They can tell us where they want to take the Jeep brand for the next 80 years.”

While it remains to be seen just how close the maker is to fielding an all-electric consumer-ready off-roader, Morrison remains confident: “We’re convinced more than ever that this is the future; electric [powertrains] are fast, powerful, quiet and offer great control,” adding, “there’s a lot happening at Jeep right now, and very quickly by the way.”

In addition to the five EVs, Jeep will have a few traditional concepts on hand to show off the latest in parts and accessories from Jeep Performance Parts, Mopar and a select group of aftermarket vendors. But it’s the five below that excite us the most.

Jeep ’41 Concept

“We’re very proud of our military roots,” Morrison stated, “that’s where we started.” Born for the combat zone, Jeeps rolled off the assembly line over 80 years ago, heading towards active duty as an essential part of the U.S. Army.

“The idea behind the [Jeep ’41 concept] is a four-door Rubicon 4xe,” he said, hinting at the ’41 concept’s “hybrid system.”

Blending military strength and resolved capability, the Jeep ’41 concept marries the automaker’s history with its electric future: the Wrangler’s 4xe’s plug-in hybrid technology. The Jeep Wrangler ’41 4xe concept showcases two electric motors, a high-voltage battery system, a hearty TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission, and a state-of-the-art 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 engine producing 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The concept’s powertrain earns an estimated 49 MPGe and provides up to 21 miles of “nearly silent, zero-emission, electric-only propulsion,” Jeep stated. “making it the most capable, technically advanced, and eco-friendly Wrangler ever.”

Off-road cred is bolstered with a two-inch lift kit with 35-inch BFGoodrich mud-terrain tires and custom drab-colored Fifteen52 17-inch Analog HD wheels detailed with CJ-inspired center caps.

The ’41 concept nods to its past by including an olive drab matte green finish and a simple black powder-coated steel bumper. However, it adds a WARN winch and a Jeep Performance Parts bumper bull bar. Topping it off, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler ’41 concept features a tan soft-top and JPP half doors. Finishing touches include a custom stenciled graphics package and accent-colored tow hooks.

The 2022 Jeep ’41’s interior is accentuated with canvas-covered seats and digitized camo and accented with Serafil 1043 stitching. A Rhino-lined floor fortifies the ‘41’s toughness while a custom shift knob from the Jeep Graphic Studio blends with drab-accented instrument panel insets.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe Concept

Jeep’s mission of “Zero Emission Freedom” amps up with several electric-assisted vehicles, including the new Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in electric concept, offering 56 MPGe and up to 25 miles of all-EV drivability. Proving its chops with its completion of the famed Rubicon Trail in full EV mode, the Grand Cherokee (GC) includes a new sway-bar disconnect, increasing its off-road ability.

Same as the production-ready Grand Cherokee 4xe model, the GC Trailhawk 4xe concept is propelled by two electric motors, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and a 400-volt battery pack. The GC 4xe concept is also equipped with a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission and Jeep’s class-exclusive Jeep Quadra-Lift air suspension, featuring an enhanced ride quality.

Also showcased on the Grand Cherokee 4xe concept are 20-inch Vossen neutral gray metallic matte-painted wheels with 33-inch BFGoodrich mud-terrain tires. Trimmed wheel wells and custom widened flares successfully give way to its current setup. In addition, Mopar-supplied rock sliders enhance the vehicle’s protection against trail hazards and random off-road obstacles.

As with other 4xe plug-ins, a custom Industrial Blue facade and idyllic 4xe glare-proof black-and-blue matte Trailhawk hood decal and Lagoon Blue tow hooks signify Jeep’s commitment to near-term electrification.

Additionally, a custom roof rack with incorporated tie-downs and a black-painted Rhino Liner roof adds to this concept’s versatility and durability when loading and unloading cargo. Finally, custom fog light bezels with four LED projector fog lamps help drivers see when the going gets tough.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe concept’s interior dons custom saddle-colored upholstered seats with “Rodney” houndstooth details. Although the primary coloration is custom, this concept still features Jeep’s signature 4xe Trailhawk badging and Surf Blue stitching.

Jeep Wrangler Magneto 2.0 Concept

At last year’s EJS event, Jeep demonstrated its dedication to Zero Emissions Freedom by showcasing a first-of-its-kind Jeep Wrangler Magneto BEV concept, a dedicated battery-electric vehicle. This year, the Magneto 2.0 concept takes the idea further with increased power, capability, technology and overall control.

Many changes are in effect with the 2022 Jeep Wrangler Magneto 2.0 concept. “It’s an open laboratory door to what we’re thinking behind the scenes,” said Mark Allen, Head of Jeep Global Design, at an industry event. “When we talked about this vehicle last year, I could go buy an electric car and drive that on the road now, but there’s nothing in the off-road space that’s fully BEV, and we were very curious about what that means.”

Jeep kept certain elements “in an attempt to ask the [BEV] question openly,” Allen stated. He wants people to “drive this vehicle and experience a fully battery-electric vehicle off-road.”

The response from the Magneto BEV’s initial showing last year was phenomenal. So it’s no surprise that certain elements remain in place with Magneto 2.0, including a six-speed manual transmission. The double-locked Dynatrac 60 Pro-Rock front axle and Dynatrac Pro-Rock 80 rear axle utilize a 5.38:1 gear ratio. With so much torque on tap and the gear ratios employed, Jeep changed the first gear in the manual transmission from 5.13 to 3.36 to enable “true, one-pedal driving,” even in precarious terrain.

“It solved a few problems up front,” Allen said, “but we were also curious about gearing with an electric motor, and it proved to be pretty good.” He feels the gears seem a bit counterintuitive, but it allows users to select a “very slow controlled crawl speed through the transfer case and the gearing.”

Although the total range wasn’t disclosed, four lithium-ion battery packs churn out 70 kWh employing its 800-volt system. Typically developed for high-performance race cars, a specialized inverter converts power from DC to AC to run the sophisticated axial flux motor.

Peak amperage is more than doubled over last year’s rendition, landing at 600 amps. Like other full EVs, the Magneto 2.0 BEV creates instantaneous power. It pushes a heart-pounding 625 horsepower and up to 850 pound-feet of torque—more than triple the torque from last year. The Magneto 2.0 scurries from 0-60 miles per hour in only two seconds, says Jeep.

Based on a two-door Wrangler-style body, the Magneto 2.0’s wheelbase is stretched by 12 inches. It runs a three-inch lift kit that makes room for massive 40-inch Maxxis Razr mud-terrain tires mounted on 20-inch wheels.

Other details include Surf Blue paint, a custom bikini top, custom bumpers, carbon fiber bits and a unique hood boasting a blue-accented window allowing admirers a sneak peek of the under-hood power unit.

Jeep Bob Concept

Jeep’s Bob concept marries the best of both worlds by blurring the lines between the famed Jeep Wrangler and the relatively new Gladiator JT truck. “Bobbing” is slang for shortening a vehicle for better off-road capability; In the Bob’s case, that means shortening the Gladiator’s truck bed overhang by 12 inches. Custom front and rear steel bumpers and high-clearance fender flares increase Bob’s approach and departure angles while protecting the vehicle in precarious situations. The fender flares do double-duty by allowing additional space for larger tire sizes.

Bob’s modifications include a three-inch lift kit with custom off-road suspension components, Dynatrac Pro-Rock 60 axles backed by King coils and bypass shocks, and beefy 40-inch Maxxis Razr mud-terrain tires mounted on 20-inch Raceline beadlock wheels.

Jeep paid close attention to Bob’s multi-finish exterior paint scheme, blending matte and gloss finishes for increased richness. In addition, the exterior showcases a vented carbon hood that adds a custom façade while allowing increased airflow to Bob’s powerplant. Vivid bed-lined floors and custom embellished seats inside the cockpit produce a stylish environment.

Bob is fueled by a turbocharged 3.0-liter Eco-Diesel V6 engine mated to a TorqueFlite 8HP75 eight-speed automatic transmission. “I realize the sun is probably setting on diesel, but this powertrain is well respected in the off-road community and we like to showcase it,” said Allen. This setup is configured for low RPM shifts and can easily adjust to challenging terrain. The Jeep Bob concept is also furnished with a Mopar cold-air intake to increase torque and boost fuel economy.

Jeep Rubicon 20th Anniversary Concept

Off-road enthusiasts have flocked to the Jeep moniker since the Willys-Overland “jeep” debuted in 1941 after winning the government contract for Army vehicles. It later transformed into a civilian Jeep (CJ) and started hitting showroom floors four years later. It was the world’s first light-duty four-wheel-drive vehicle and started an off-road revolution.

Today the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon —the most factory-capable model—commands about 30% of Wrangler sales, setting the stage for extreme off-roading prowess. Taking the industry by storm since its 2002 introduction, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon celebrates two decades of rock-crawling, overlanding and trail-loving fun while paying homage to Wrangler’s capability and cult following.

Armed with the 392-horsepower 6.4-liter V8 engine used in the Rubicon 392, the Rubicon 20th Anniversary concept boasts a Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) two-inch lift kit, 17-inch Mopar beadlock-capable wheels shod with beefy 37-inch BFGoodrich mud-terrain tires. A steel front bumper and bull bar incorporate a recovery-ready WARN winch, while an underbody steel skid plate helps to protect the vehicle’s critical components.

The Rubicon 20th Anniversary concept’s matte Granite Crystal exterior vinyl wrap complements a Sky One-Touch Power Top, removable side panels, and custom-built half doors for an expansive experience. A performance hood with center scoop allows extra airflow while a rear Mopar swing gate and on-board air compressor make quick work of after-trail inflations. In true 392 fashion, an active dual-mode performance exhaust offers occupants either a controlled demeanor for in-neighborhood drives or a loud-and-boisterous growl for throttle-happy drivers.

Additionally, a hat tip acknowledging 20 years of Wrangler Rubicon’s success includes a 20 th -anniversary hood decal, gold badging and tow hooks, and an American flag fender decal.

2023 Easter Jeep Safari to Reveal EV Concepts

The 2023 Easter Jeep Safari is happening soon. Here is a sneak-peek at a few of the electric concept vehicles Jeep will be unveiling.

Easter Jeep Safari to Reveal EV Concepts

2023 Easter Jeep Safari lineup of Jeep® brand concept vehicles

2023 Easter Jeep Safari lineup of Jeep brand concept vehicles

Every year in the beautiful red rock setting of Moab, Utah, is the Easter Jeep Safari. Jeeple (Jeep people) of all shapes and sizes make their way into the picturesque desert to show off their incredible builds, participate in off-road challenges and surround themselves with like-minded enthusiasts. Though, for Jeep (and some other manufacturers that sneak in), it's a chance to show Jeep owners what's coming down the pipe.

For the most part, it's Jeep unloading concepts upon concepts. Easter Jeep Safaris of the past have been no exception – it's where the Jeep Hemi was introduced, the PHEV hybrid and all-electric concepts were unveiled – and this year will be no different. According to Jeep, there are four electrified concepts that are incredible, even for non-Jeep owners.

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe Concept

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe Concept

First up, the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe. No, nothing special has been done to the powertrain or the four-wheel-drive system, but it does come with a rather festive paint job. Jeep was overwhelmed by the support for the pink edition they brought a few Safaris ago, so this year, they'll be bringing a magenta version.

The grille's design is the same as seen on the 20th Anniversary Edition Wranglers, though the hood has a two-tone decal and design package that's unique to the magenta version. Instead of stock Jeep wheels, the magenta 4xe runs 37s on 17-inch American Expedition Vehicles. Forever a favorite among the Jeeple, AEV also provides the front and rear bumpers, which house the Warn Zeon winch.

Jeep Wrangler Magneto 3.0 Concept

Jeep Wrangler Magneto 3.0 Concept

Next is the Magneto 3.0 EV concept. For three years in a row, Jeep has brought an all-electric concept to the Safari, with no word on when an all-electric version would be produced. This time, though, Jeep will be bringing out the Magneto 3.0 Wrangler concept.

Incredibly, the all-electric powertrain would still be paired with a traditional manual transmission, which would transfer 625 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque to the 4x4 drivetrain. Even with that much power under the pedal, Jeep swears that, unlike the other concepts, the range and mileage have been "greatly approved."

1978 Jeep Cherokee 4xe Concept

1978 Jeep Cherokee 4xe Concept

Serving as the resident resto-mod is the 1978 Cherokee 4xe concept – a plug-in hybrid that pays incredible homage to the era. Underneath the time-appropriate frame is the Wrangler's 4xe powertrain – two electric motors paired to a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo – while on the inside, all the color and character of the 70s are in full swing.

Mixed with the groovy styling, though, is a tasteful blend of modern technology and creature comforts. From the brown leather seats, the driver is behind a modern Jeep steering wheel, complete with all the deliciously modern technological goodies, like air conditioning, terrain select mode and more.

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe Departure Concept

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe Departure Concept

Finally, the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe Departure concept. This is the concept that will make saying "tubular" popular again. The grille has a tubular seven-slotted guard to protect the radiator and lights, and all four doors have been swapped for tubular framing. For extra seating at a campsite, the front grille guard can also be used as a bench.

Covered with Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) aplenty, the Dark Harbor Rubicon plug-in hybrid concept has JPP's factory-made 2-inch lift kit, 37-inch all-terrain tires, and beautifully bronze 17-inch wheels. Keeping well in line with the "Departure" moniker, the spare tire holder has been swapped for a tubular holder that's removable to help improve the departure angle.

For the first time in all 50 states, the Departure will be fitted with flat fenders that are 100% legal, don't compromise space in the wheel wells for larger tires and meets OEM lighting requirements and tire coverage.

  • Jeep brand’s mission of Zero Emission Freedom takes charge with four new electrified concept vehicles, including the reimagined Jeep Wrangler Magneto 3.0
  • All concept vehicles are equipped with an array of advanced powertrains and showcase the latest prototype and production parts

March 30, 2023 , Auburn Hills, Mich.  – An entirely new collection of eye-catching, efficient and mission-capable concept vehicles will be unveiled and driven off road during the 57th annual Easter Jeep Safari, April 1-9, 2023, in Moab, Utah, the Jeep® brand’s home away from home. Electrified power and commanding performance will be front and center during this year’s Safari. The Jeep brand and Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) by Mopar design teams have created several one-of-a-kind rock-crawling and terrain-traversing vehicles that will take four-wheeling to the next level and prove why there’s nothing quite like legendary Jeep 4×4 capability.

“Every year, more than 20,000 Jeep enthusiasts descend on Moab, Utah, for Easter Jeep Safari to wheel in the most extreme off-road conditions, where our engineers continue to push the capability of our Jeep vehicles to next levels,” said Jim Morrison, senior vice president and head of Jeep brand North America. “It’s the perfect place to showcase our seven new Jeep concepts, because it’s with these Jeep enthusiasts that we’ll be able to push the limits even more and get their feedback on where they want to take the Jeep brand into the future.”

This year, seven distinctive Jeep brand and JPP concept vehicles are equipped with an array of advanced powertrains. Back by popular demand is Jeep Wrangler Magneto, the first battery-electric vehicle (BEV) concept from the Jeep brand. The third iteration of the powerful and capable Jeep Wrangler SUV concept, Magneto 3.0, and three additional Jeep 4xe concept vehicles are testament to the Jeep brand’s commitment to Zero Emission Freedom and 4×4 leadership. Each concept also features the latest production and prototype JPP from Mopar, developed with rigorous specifications and legendary 4×4 capability in mind.

“Our annual trip to Moab allows us to showcase the latest selection of custom and authentic, quality-tested Jeep Performance Parts from Mopar,” said Mark Bosanac, North America senior vice president, Mopar service, parts and customer care. “Unlike any other aftermarket offerings, our growing portfolio of factory-tested and factory-backed parts and accessories are specifically designed and engineered to face the toughest trails in the world.”  The 2023 Easter Jeep Safari concept vehicles include: Jeep Wrangler Magneto 3.0 Concept Third time’s a charm for this off-road beast. When the Jeep design team began building the Jeep Wrangler Magneto concept, the intention was always to use the platform to test, discover and push the boundaries of 4×4 electrification. The Jeep Magneto 1.0 concept was first introduced in 2021 as a fully capable BEV that was stealthy, quiet, quick and an unmistakable rock-climbing force. Jeep brand engineers and designers created a zero-emission vehicle with Jeep 4×4 capability that provided new levels of efficiency, environmental responsibility, and extreme performance on and off road. Based on a two-door 2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, the Jeep Magneto features a custom-built axial flux electric motor that operates up to 6,000 rpm and connects to a six-speed manual transmission for ultimate control. The compact e-motor was initially tuned to deliver up to 273 lb.-ft. of torque and 285 horsepower. The debut of the  Jeep Magneto 2.0 concept in 2022  pushed the performance envelope further. Peak amperage in the propulsion system was more than doubled to 600 amps, which enabled the concept vehicle to instantly deliver up to 850 lb.-ft. of peak torque to the wheels – more than triple the torque output of the previous version of the concept – and 625 horsepower for serious rock-climbing challenges. Updates to Jeep Magneto this year include a new, more efficient motor that boosts the torque output, as well as updated programming, which results in a 20% increase in useable energy and range. Also new to the Jeep Magneto 3.0 concept this year are three driver selectable functions that capitalize on the benefits of a fully electric powertrain in serious off-road situations:

  • Output select allows the driver to choose between two power settings (standard: 285 horsepower/273 lb.-ft. of torque; maximum: 650 horsepower/900 lb.-ft. of torque)
  • Two-stage power regeneration mode allows normal driving while off, or enhanced brake regeneration using the electric motor when engaged
  • Aggressive hill descent mode can be selected in low range to offer true ‘one pedal’ off-road driving in serious rock-crawling situations

Adding to its prowess are Dynatrac 60 front axles (5.38:1 ratio), Dynatrac 80 rear axles (5.38:1 ratio), 20-inch off-road beadlock wheels, 40-inch mud terrain tires and a custom 3-inch lift.    The Jeep Magneto 3.0 concept also tests the concept vehicle’s proportion. For ease of access, the door opening has been modified and swept back an additional six inches. For added accessibility, a new B-pillar was moved rearward 60mm from stock to make way for a custom anti-roll bar. The front fender was stretched back on the trailing edge two inches. The windshield has been raked back 12 degrees to give the side view a “chopped” roof feel without shortening the front glass.   Jeep Magneto 3.0 has an updated paint scheme that pays homage to all three evolutions of the concept vehicle. The Bright White and Surf Blue motif remains, but the third iteration introduces more vibrant exterior details, including the addition of red accents. The Jeep Magneto 3.0 concept front seats have been re-trimmed in a rich blue leather and adorned with red accent stitching to match the exterior. The rear seats have been removed and the floor has been Rhino-lined in Surf Blue for added functionality and durability. Jeep Scrambler 392 Concept Originally introduced in 1981, the Jeep Scrambler (CJ-8) was the Jeep brand’s first convertible, compact truck. Highly capable and versatile, this unique small pickup truck was similar to the CJ-7, but featured a longer 103-inch wheelbase and a long rear overhang for increased cargo space. Fast forward four decades, the Jeep Scrambler 392 concept builds on the fun, open-air origins of the CJ-8 with a powerful twist. Though a V-8 engine was never offered in the CJ-8, the 392 Scrambler concept offers impressive power and incredible torque with its 6.4-liter HEMI® V-8 engine (470 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque).   The Jeep Scrambler 392 concept, which started as a four-door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, also emphasizes lightweight off-road performance, achieved through custom carbon-fiber bodywork. The transformation showcases the Scrambler’s new two-door aesthetic with an open-air freedom personality. The windshield is laid back 12 degrees and matches a lower roof. The modified silhouette gives a nod to chopped top hotrods. One of the most exciting features on the Jeep Scrambler 392 concept is the newly released AccuAir air suspension kit developed for the Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator. This system allows an adjustable suspension lift ranging from 1.5 inches up to 5.5 inches and can be custom adjusted on the fly with an in-cab controller or through long-range Bluetooth on a wireless device. The sculptural rear quarter panel is designed to emphasize the door aperture, as well as wider rear flares. The updated bodywork also includes a new front fender flare and a new carbon-fiber hood. In the middle of the hood rests a tinted clear insert to spotlight the heart of the Jeep Scrambler 392 concept, its monster 392-cubic-inch engine. Custom front and rear lightweight bumpers and the new fender flares provide added clearance for a larger tire and wheel combo. The Jeep Scrambler 392 concept sits on 40-inch tires wrapped around custom 20-inch rims. The rims and tow hooks are finished in Brass Monkey paint, the same as today’s stock Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392. The exterior of the concept is painted in Sublime green, while the interior boasts custom seats with plaid blue inserts and green stitching. 1978 Jeep Cherokee 4xe Concept Another trip down memory lane leads to this year’s Resto-mod concept build. First introduced in 1974, the Jeep Cherokee (SJ) was a sporty, two-door version of the Wagoneer and featured bucket seats, a sports steering wheel and racy detailing designed to appeal to younger, more adventurous drivers.  A year later, the Wide-Track option was available with key upgraded features, including exterior stripes, larger tires, 3-inch wider axles, larger front and rear wheel cutouts, Dana 44 front and rear axles and an interior with more creature comforts.  Which leads us to the present day of this concept vehicle-loving journey. To pay homage to the Jeep Cherokee SJ, a first-of-its-kind vehicle with on- and off-road chops, the Jeep design team set out to reimagine the iconic full-size SUV with a modern spin.  The Jeep Cherokee 4xe concept began its life as a 1978 Jeep Cherokee, which was affectionately blended with a 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe. The original Jeep Cherokee was intended to take the Jeep Cherokee SJ to the next level of performance, and that ethos rings true for this concept vehicle.  The original body was heavily modified and the exterior fuses original proportions with a bright, unmistakably 1970s-theme multicolor paint scheme. While the ’78 Jeep Cherokee 4xe concept looks similar to a vintage Jeep Cherokee SJ at first glance, it has transformed into a modern, electrified, off-road performer. Under the hood, the ’78 Jeep Cherokee 4xe concept features the advanced Jeep Wrangler 4xe powertrain, which provides a unique on- and off-road experience through the combination of two electric motors, a high-voltage battery pack and a high-tech 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 engine. An eight-speed automatic transmission is mated to a 4:1 transfer case to deliver more than enough power to 37-inch tires wrapped around custom 17-inch “slotted mag” style wheels.   The Jeep ’78 Jeep Cherokee 4xe concept’s custom interior features low-back bucket seats trimmed in leather. The rear bench seat was replaced with a four-point safety cage, and the rear cargo space houses a full-size spare tire just in case the trail gets a little too wild.   Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe Concept Following the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the special-run, limited-edition Tuscadero exterior paint color that debuted in 2021 for Jeep Wrangler models, the Jeep design team decided to up the ante on this head-turning chromatic magenta color. The team drew a line in the Moab sand and decided it was time to flip the color’s perception and make it a lot tougher than expected.  Enter this special Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe concept with its legendary electrified off-road capability, unapologetic color palette and a powerful platform for any adventure. The exterior of the Jeep concept boasts an eye-catching, pink-hued paint with Gloss Black accents sprinkled across the front grille and headlamp bezels. The signature seven-slot grille was borrowed from the new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 20th Anniversary model, which sets off a custom hood graphic with a tone-on-tone print that fittingly ties into the interior theme.  Off-road capability has been increased with the addition of an adjustable AccuAir air suspension kit to allow ample clearance for massive 37-inch tires that are wrapped around custom 17-inch high-gloss black American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) Borah wheels. Additional AEV pieces include front and rear bumpers, differential covers and a Warn Zeon winch. Grand Wagoneer Overland Concept Over the hills and through the Canyonlands we go with the cross-trekking 2023 Grand Wagoneer Overland Concept. The all-new Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer vehicles reinterpret their own legacies and take the premium SUV into uncharted territories of comfort and adventure. With this in mind, the go anywhere, do anything concept vehicle takes off-road exploration to the next level – and in true Grand Wagoneer style. The Grand Wagoneer Overland concept leverages the all-new 3.0-liter Hurricane Twin Turbo 510 engine to lead adventure-seekers further off the beaten path. Delivering 510 horsepower and 500 lb.-ft. of torque, the powerful Hurricane engine offers premium performance while also delivering improved fuel economy versus many competitors’ naturally aspirated V-8 and boosted six-cylinder engines. The overlanding-inspired concept boasts an incredible amount of appointments inside and out. The concept’s main feature is a custom RedTail Overland Skyloft affixed to the top of the Grand Wagoneer’s roof. The carbon-fiber constructed Skyloft unfolds in around 10 seconds from the inside by simply pushing up with one arm. To accomplish the Skyloft’s integration, the design team began by removing the second- and third-row seats. The rear-most sunroof was repositioned to create a custom weatherproof, pass-thru entrance from the lower third-row seating area to the upper Skyloft level. A fore/aft sliding door and a small step, which also doubles as a usable table, allows for easy access. The Skyloft provides a climate-controlled oasis complete with a sleeping space for two people and enough windows to soak in even the most panoramic views.  And while the Skyloft may be the optimal choice to take in a starry night, the main cabin space below also received plenty of attention to detail. Whether it’s to escape a quick downpour or change out of muddy hiking gear, the concept’s truck bed-lined cargo floor handles any outdoor element with ease. To complement the Grand Wagoneer’s rear seat entertainment and other creature comforts, the cozy interior was appointed with two oversized beanbags, a plush throw rug, pillows and custom, ambient interior lighting. The spacious interior also provides ample storage for bikes, gear and anything else worthy of the trip. The exterior of the Grand Wagoneer Overland concept is painted in Industrial Green with Gunmetal accents. A massive Warn winch was added to the front grille and features two sets of custom laser lights for superior night-time visibility. A durable, black Rhino-lined roof has a subtle pop of orange color to pay homage to the countless amounts of outdoor gear used by overlanding enthusiasts. Larger wheel openings and custom wheel flares, as well as a custom front chin and rear valance help complete the look, while also delivering aggressive approach and departure angles for superior off-road capability. The concept’s 35-inch tires wrapped around custom 18-inch wheels provide a natural 1.5-inch lift to the vehicle for added breakover and ground clearance. Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe Departure Concept The Jeep Wrangler 4xe Departure concept builds upon the iconic open-air cockpit of the best-selling and most capable PHEV in America with innovative and conceptual items from the JPP by Mopar design team. Notably, the spare wheel and tire mount allows the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe to push the limits of available departure angles with 4×4 electrification.   Riding on 17-by-8.5-inch Vintage Bronze KMC Impact OL wheels and 37-inch BFGoodrich tires, the Wrangler 4xe Departure concept features a JPP 2-inch lift kit with BILSTEIN performance shock absorbers. The BILSTEIN shocks use remote reservoirs to provide greater cooling capability for increased suspension travel and improved Jeep 4×4 off-road capability. Protecting the seven-slot front grille first introduced on the 2023 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 20th Anniversary edition is a custom-designed tubular grille guard measuring 4 feet by 1 foot that folds down to create an innovative bumper bench, a perfect relaxation perch for two while out on the trails. Below the grille guard is a modified Rubicon bumper with a Warn winch.    New, custom, flat-fender flares and wheel liners, designed specifically for larger wheel and tire combinations, provide additional clearance. The flat fender flares have integral removable daytime- running-light (DRL) covers for the off-road enthusiast who may require extra tire clearance for extreme off-road situations. This concept is the first 50-state legal fender flare with OEM DRL and meets 50-state tire coverage requirements.   The design team continues to explore customer needs by investigating additional trail lighting. The Wrangler 4xe Departure concept uses three concept header-mounted, 11-inch TYRI rectangular LED lights with custom brackets that mount to the backside of the windshield header. Each light easily pivots out of the way when the windshield is folded down. Illuminating the ground at all four corners are custom rock lights.  Custom rock rails with mounted slider tubes provide enhanced body protection and easier access to the elevated cabin, while JPP tube doors provide the ultimate open-air experience. For added storage capacity, the Wrangler 4xe Departure concept features Molle panels that attach to the sport bar and the body tub to house additional trail-rated accessories that need a mounting point. The design team used the Wrangler 4xe Departure concept to explore innovative options to mount the spare wheel and tire, while keeping harmony with other accessories. At the rear is a custom convertible tube gate that offers front- or rear-facing positions for the spare wheel and tire. When the spare is flipped outward, the system acts as a bed extender to provide more cargo space. When the gate is turned toward the cabin, the rear overhang is greatly improved for off-roading while the spare wheel and tire are safely secured. The convertible gate maintains a factory backup camera and CHMSL in either position.   The rear cargo compartment features Jeep Rubicon trail rails with tie downs to store additional accessories, and a signature JPP all-weather cargo mat. The stunning Dark Harbor blue exterior on the Wrangler 4xe Departure concept is contrasted inside the cabin with the vivid chromatic seating surfaces. The design team uses an expressive color combination of light Acorn Squash Nappa leather contrasted with darker Carnegie Hall brown Nappa leather, accented with warm off-white Serafil stitching. The Dark Harbor blue color continues onto the instrument panel, which features various Vintage Bronze accents. The Wrangler 4xe Departure concept also features a concept instrument panel accessory rail to mount phones or accessories for recording trail rides. For the driver, stainless-steel JPP pedal covers include black rubber pads, adding plenty of traction to the accelerator and brake pedals. In addition, JPP door-grab handles provide easy entry and exit.     The new JPP heavy-duty vinyl flooring system is available now for all production four-door (JL) Wranglers. With integrated Jeep floor drains it allows for easy interior cleaning.   Jeep Gladiator Rubicon Sideburn Concept The Jeep Gladiator Sideburn concept, wearing a striking Solar Flash Yellow, explores new tools designed for the burgeoning interest in off-road adventure.    Powered by a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, the Gladiator Sideburn concept features a JPP 2-inch lift kit with BILSTEIN performance shock absorbers. The BILSTEIN shocks use remote reservoirs to provide greater cooling capability for increased suspension travel and improved Jeep 4×4 off-road capability.   At all four corners, black HRE 17-by-9-inch FT1 six-spoke wheels ride on 37-by-13-inch BF Goodrich tires. Protecting the seven-slot front grille borrowed from the 2023 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 20th Anniversary edition is a custom-designed tubular grille guard measuring 4 feet by 1 foot that folds down to create an innovative bumper bench, a perfect relaxation perch for two while out on the trails. Below the grille guard is a modified Rubicon bumper with a Warn winch.   Responding to customer feedback and debuting on a Gladiator Sideburn concept, the JPP by Mopar design team installed a pair of removable 11-inch TYRI rectangular LED lights to each of the roof panels, suspended by custom bracketry in the concept-light fairing. The light fairing is attached to each roof panel and features a quick disconnect. A concept JPP Gladiator Sport Bar, made from lightweight carbon fiber and steel, enhances the space between the cabin and the bed with a design that features bed steps on both sides for easy access. The sport bar also features a mid-shelf with tie downs for portable storage totes. Each tote can be locked and secured via eight available tie-down loops. Four T-track rails on the upper portion of the sport bar enable easy installation of bike, kayak or other roof-mounted cargo systems. The bed on the Gladiator Sideburn concept is truly unique. Created to further enhance the strong and lightweight Jeep design language, the bed features integral Molle panels above and behind the wheel flares for additional storage. Integral RotoPaX containers are specially designed for liquid storage during off-road adventures. Within the bed is a modified Mopar bed-mounted spare tire carrier that holds a 37-inch wheel and tire. A custom tailgate carries the standard back-up camera, CHMSL and features three Molle-panel openings, along with a custom floating Jeep badge in the center opening.  The open-air feel of the Sideburn Gladiator concept is further enhanced by the available JPP half doors while JPP side steps and JPP grab handles assist with entry into the elevated cabin. The open cabin features seats, armrest, shift boots, parking brake handle and half-door pull straps trimmed in a deep, dark, red-brown Vienesse Relicate Nappa leather with Soul-stopper thread. The thread accents continue onto the top pad of the instrument panel and steering wheel.   Custom instrument panel bezels carry a 3D topographical map of Moab scenery finished in matte-black base and gloss dark-silver trails. Accents throughout the cabin are finished in Atomic Silver matte paint.  Decorative, stainless-steel JPP pedal covers provide foot traction for feathering through the trails, and a concept JPP heavy-duty vinyl floor system (for JT Gladiator model) with integrated floor drains allows for quick interior hose-outs.

Jeep reveals 2024 Easter Safari concepts

We get two wranglers, a gladiator and a wagoneer this year.

jeep safari electric

There may be snow on the ground in many parts of the country as I write this, but spring is in the air even way up here in the once-frigid expanse of Michigan, and with it comes Jeep's annual celebration in Moab, Utah — the Easter Jeep Safari . And as is tradition, Jeep has a handful of concept builds to show off to this year's Safari-goers. While we won't be seeing anything along the lines of the now-retired Jeep Magneto or 392 Scrambler , it's still Easter Jeep Safari; there's always something cool.

Blame the UAW strike, retirements in Jeep leadership ( former design chief Mark Allen departed in May of last year) or what have you, but 2024 is a bit of a lean year. Jeep is bringing just two ground-up concept builds and two Jeep Performance Parts accessorized models to the 2024 edition of Easter Jeep Safari. There are no wild vintage riffs or rebodies this year, but that's just as well. We can file these in the "attainable" category for once. Let's dive in.

2024 Jeep Low Down Concept

Jeep Low Down

The Low Down Concept celebrates the V8. It was short-lived in the Wrangler but the 392 also made a splash in the Grand Cherokee SRT8. It may not be a "Jeep engine" in the strictest sense, but it's certainly one that Jeep fandom has embraced in recent years. The Low Down gets its name from an older Easter Jeep Safari Concept: the Lower Forty . Both are designed around their V8 engines (the Lower Forty had a 5.7-liter Hemi) and were customized so that the engines could be fitted without having to lift their bodies for extra clearance. This one rocks a standard 392 with 475 horsepower and a stock-height suspension but beefed-up Dana 60 axles and a set of 5.38 gears. That color is called Poison Apple Red, by the way.

2024 Jeep Willys Dispatcher Concept

Jeep Willys Dispatcher

With the retirement of the badass 6-speed electric Magneto , this 4xe-based Willys Dispatcher is by default the most forward-thinking concept Jeep has at the Safari this year. Embracing a sense of juxtaposition, Jeep's designers used this concept as the foundation for a throwback build featuring 36-inch tires on eggshell-colored steelies highlighted (literally) by a bright green finish. Inside, there's distressed leather with houndstooth inserts and no headrests to be found. Vintage. Or like on TV. Take your pick.

2024 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon High Top Concept

Jeep Gladiator Rubicon High Top

This one's my personal favorite. Maybe it's the sweet two-tone finish or the big, fat sidewalls, but this pickup-based build speaks to me. Those thick shoes are 40-inch BFG KO3s on 18x9-inch KMC Grenade Crawl beadlock wheels. Never would have imagined I'd see a street Jeep tire that would make an 18-inch wheel look tiny, but here we are.

Like the Vacationeer below, the High Top is decked out in Jeep Performance Parts goodies, including flat fender flares, Dana 60 front and rear axles, an AccuAir adjustable air suspension ( We got to sample one last year! ) and an entire pile of visual and go-anywhere bolt-ons from JPP and their partners at American Expedition Vehicles et al. This one's just based on the standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, but that's OK. I'll take it as it sits.

2024 Jeep Vacationeer Concept

Jeep Vacationeer

No, not vacationer, but Vacation eer . This spearmint-wrapped Grand Wagoneer with a roof tent and a bunch of stuff in the back is... well, OK, it's a Grand Wagoneer with a roof tent and a bunch of stuff in the back. In fact, maybe it's just me, but the Vacationeer looks an awful lot like the Camp Lux Grand Wagoneer from a year ago, which was also a Grand Wagoneer with a roof tent and a bunch of stuff in the back. But it can't be, right? I mean, it's green and the wheels are different... Can you rattle-can a roof tent chassis? Asking for a friend.

That's it for the 2024 round of Easter Jeep Safari Concepts. As I said above, it's a lean year in Moab, but 2024 is going to be a big one for Jeep. Why? One word: Recon . Stay tuned.

Jeep Reveals 7 Concepts for 2023 Easter Jeep Safari, Including the Electric Magneto 3.0

  • Jeep revealed seven concepts ahead of this year’s Easter Jeep Safari, set to kick off on April 1.
  • Among the concepts is the fully-electric ‘Magneto 3.0’, as well as a restomodded Jeep Cherokee, a Wrangler-based Scrambler 392 and an Overland-prepped Wagoneer.
  • The TFL team will sample each of these concepts at EJS next week, so stay tuned for more updates!

Easter Jeep Safari is back once again, and with it we have a new batch of Jeep concepts!

Each iteration of Easter Jeep Safari brings more than 20,000 enthusiasts to the wild desert around Moab, Utah, and this year’s event is right around the corner. From April 1-9, Stellantis will show off seven distinct concepts, including a new (and final) iteration of the fully electric, Wrangler-based concept, now called ‘Magneto 3.0’. While we’ll cover each concept in further detail once the TFL team hits Moab next week, here’s a quick rundown of what each concept is all about.

Wrangler Rubicon 4xe Magenta concept

Remember Tuscadero Red? Jeep had such a successful run with the color that they went one further with this magenta concept. The color may not be to everyone’s taste, but at least the company actually offers interesting colors for the Wrangler lineup beyond your standard (and extremely boring ) white, black, silver and gray, with maybe a red or blue thrown into the mix.

On the whole, this concept is still a Wrangler Rubicon 4xe at its core. This concept brings in the new gloss black seven-slotted grille that’s part and parcel of the 2023 20th anniversary models . You also get 17-inch AEV Borah wheels, AEV front and rear bumpers and a Warn Zeon winch. It is hiding one trick under the skin, which is an AccuAir adjustable air suspension kit. That allows the Wrangler 4xe better clearance for the 37-inch BFGoodrich mud-terrains, while the four-corner airbag setup lets you raise the vehicle up by anywhere from 1-1/2 to 5-1/2 inches.

Magneto 3.0 concept

Yep, the electric Magneto concept is back for what Jeep says is the final time. This third iteration makes a host of improvements to this Wrangler-based concept’s pure EV philosophy. At its heart, there’s a 70-kWh battery as well as a 6-speed manual (!) transmission. More specifically, the Magneto 3.0 uses the TR6060 unit out of a Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, though it’s been beefed up to handle the wallop of torque the EV powertrain provides.

The 2023 iteration of the fully electric Wrangler concept uses a more efficient axial flux motor. That translates to increased torque — up to 900 lb-ft from 850. Jeep says it also unlocked 20% more range and “usable energy” from the battery, while you still get 625 horsepower (155 more than the 6.4-liter V8-powered Wrangler Rubicon 392). A two-stage power regeneration mode enhances the Magneto’s capability to put more juice back into the pack, while offering something closer to one-pedal driving off-road.

The Magneto 3.0 concept gets a custom anti-roll bar, as well as modified front fenders and a raked windshield to give it more of a “chopped” look without actually cutting down on the front glass. To that, the concept also sees a 3-inch custom lift to accommodate 40-inch mud-terrain tires on 20-inch beadlock-capable wheels. At the front, this concept gets a Dynatrac 60 front axle and a Dynatrac 80 rear axle, both at a 5.38:1 ratio.

Scrambler 392 concept

Back in 1981, Jeep introduced an extended version of the CJ-7 called the CJ-8 Scrambler as a convertible pickup truck. This concept pays homage to that unique idea, but brings it into the 21st century with a far more powerful V8 under the hood.

For this application, Jeep took a standard four-door Wrangler 392, complete with its 470 horsepower 6.4-liter engine putting out 470 lb-ft of torque. The development team then used carbon fiber bodywork to transform the rig’s aesthetic into a two-door, two-seat short bed pickup. Like the Magneto 3.0, the Scrambler’s windshield is raked back 12 degrees. This rig also gets the AccuAir suspension setup, 40-inch tires and custom 20-inch wheels.

Grand Wagoneer Overland concept

The next Easter Jeep Safari concept focuses on the brand’s largest, most luxurious SUV. This short wheelbase Grand Wagoneer gets the company’s new 3.0-liter Hurricane straight-six, putting out 510 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. To that, Jeep fitted a RedTail Overland Skyloft tent, made out of carbon fiber and deployable from inside the car in about 10 seconds.

On the “lower level”, as it were (Jeep removed the rear sunroof to fit a trap door for the tent), there are two oversized beanbags, a throw rug and custom ambient lighting. Up front, the Grand Wagoneer Overland concept gets a Warn Zeon winch, while there’s another recovery D-ring fitted into the hitch receiver around back. This car still sits on its stock suspension, but the 35-inch tires give it a natural 1.5-inch lift over the standard Grand Wagoneer, for better ground clearance and breakover.

1978 Jeep Cherokee 4xe restomod

It wouldn’t be an Easter Jeep Safari display without at least one restomod, and that’s where this 1978 Cherokee SJ comes in. The team bought the donor vehicle for this project for about $2,500 and proceeded to both restore the original shell and modify a Wrangler 4xe into the mix under its skin. In fact, you can see there’s still the “Wrangler” grab bar on the passenger side of the rig.

The new part of this restomod that was “affectionately blended” (Jeep’s words) into the design was the plug-in hybrid powertrain. With that, this Cherokee SJ gets an 8-speed automatic transmission and a 4:1 transfer case. Apart from the unique interior touches like the customized dashboard inlay, the Cherokee gets a (sadly non-functional) eight-track player, 37-inch tires and 17-inch “slotted mag” wheels.

JPP concepts: Wrangler Departure and Gladiator Sideburn

Stellantis always seizes the opportunity to showcase its parts catalog at Easter Jeep Safari and this year is no exception. The two entries we get this year are one Wrangler-based concept, called ‘Departure’, and a Gladiator-based concept called ‘Sideburn’.

The Sideburn (in Solar Flash Yellow) uses the standard 3.6-liter V6 engine, but brings in a Jeep Performance Parts 2-inch lift kit with Bilstein performance shocks. At each corner, you get 17-inch HRE six-spoke wheels and 37-by-13-inch BFGoodrich tires. The Sideburn also incorporates a pair of removable 11-inch TYRI rectangular lights, and there’s a concept JPP sport bar around back made from carbon fiber and steel.

As for the Departure, Jeep again elected to use a Wrangler Rubicon 4xe as a base. To that, they brought in a 2-inch JPP lift and 37-inch BFG tires on 17-by-8.5-inch KMC Impact OL wheels. Again, you get Bilstein shocks and TYRI rectangular lights, while the Departure gets flat fender flares with removable daytime running-light covers. You also get tubular doors and the grille guard also folds down into a bench that you can use while out on the trails (at least if it’s not boiling hot).

Stay tuned to our channels for more hands-on time with each of these seven concepts!

Mopar Announces Concept Jeeps for 2022 Easter Jeep Safari

April 8, 2022

Electrified power, legendary 4×4 capability and commanding performance will be front and center during this year’s Easter Jeep® Safari, the Jeep brand’s home away from home. The Jeep brand and Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) by Mopar team are bringing their A game with an extraordinary lineup of custom-built 4×4 and 4xe concept vehicles to conquer the iconic red-rock terrain in Moab, Utah. Thousands of off-roading enthusiasts and Jeep brand loyalists from all over the world will descend upon Moab, April 9-17, for the weeklong annual tradition of trail rides and technical off-roading.

“Easter Jeep Safari is the perfect opportunity for the Jeep brand to push the limits of four-wheel-drive development and, most importantly, to stay connected with our customers,” said Jim Morrison, senior vice president and head of Jeep brand North America. “Moab is a rite of passage for many Jeep owners, and to own a Jeep is to truly understand the lifestyle – it’s what the Jeep brand is all about. Whether it’s a Jeep concept or the latest Jeep production vehicle, our customers have the chance to get up close and personal with our passion projects during this event. From a fully capable BEV off-roader to rugged and powerful terrain tacklers, every concept is a true reflection of what our customers tell us they want and give a taste of where the future of the Jeep brand and off-roading can go.”

jeep safari electric

Electrified power, legendary 4×4 capability and commanding performance will be front and center during the 56th annual Easter Jeep Safari, the Jeep® brand’s home away from home. The Jeep brand and Jeep Performance Parts by Mopar (JPP) team are debuting an impressive lineup of custom-built 4×4 and 4xe concept vehicles, including the all-electric Jeep Wrangler Magneto 2.0 concept.

This year, 10 distinctive Jeep brand and JPP concept vehicles are equipped with an array of advanced powertrains. The notable lineup is punctuated by the triumphant return of Jeep Wrangler Magneto, the first battery-electric vehicle (BEV) concept from the Jeep brand. The even more powerful and capable Jeep Wrangler Magneto 2.0 and four additional Jeep 4xe concept vehicles are testament to the Jeep brand’s commitment to Zero Emission Freedom. Additionally, each concept features the latest production and prototype JPP from Mopar, developed with rigorous specifications and legendary 4×4 capability in mind.

“Teaming up with the Jeep brand, there is no better place than the annual Easter Jeep Safari to show off our latest production and custom innovations to true off-road enthusiasts,” said Mark Bosanac, North America vice president, Mopar service, parts & customer care. “Unlike any other aftermarket offerings, our factory-tested and factory-backed Jeep Performance Parts are specifically designed and engineered to face the toughest trails in the world.”

The 2022 Easter Jeep Safari concept vehicles include:

Jeep Wrangler Magneto 2.0 Concept A year ago, the Jeep Wrangler Magneto concept demonstrated that a battery-electric propulsion system would be true to the Wrangler’s heritage of on-road and off-road capability. A vehicle that demonstrates the Jeep brand’s dedication to Zero Emissions Freedom.

The Jeep Wrangler Magneto 2.0 is amped up – literally – creating a terrain-dominating off-roader that carries you far, far off the beaten path.

jeep safari electric

Jeep® Wrangler Magneto 2.0 Concept

The Magneto 2.0’s powertrain basics include: Custom-built axial flux electric motor that operates up to 5,250 rpm Six-speed manual transmission for ultimate control over the propulsion system Four lithium-ion battery packs, distributed throughout the chassis for weight balance, with a combined power of 70 kW/h, running an 800-volt system An inverter derived from race cars converts DC power to AC for the high-tech motor That’s a great start, but the Magneto 2.0 team set their sights on the “strap in and hold on with both hands” end of the performance spectrum.

Peak amperage in the propulsion system is more than doubled to 600 amps, which enables the Magneto 2.0 to instantly deliver up to 850 lb.-ft. of peak torque to the wheels – more than triple the torque output of last year’s concept – and 625 horsepower for serious rock-climbing challenges.

A new electric powertrain calibration maintains the peak amperage for up to 10 seconds – think of it as electronic nitrous oxide.

First gear ratio in the manual transmission is changed from 5.13 to 3.36. When combined with the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon’s Rock-Trac transfer case, the Magneto 2.0 demonstrates unequaled rock-crawling capability with its instant on-demand torque delivery. A driver-selectable maximum regeneration function added to the propulsion system offers a true “one-pedal” driving experience.

Getting all that torque to the ground calls for some hardware upgrades.

jeep safari electric

It starts with 12 inches added to the wheelbase of the two-door Wrangler body style, creating some extra room for powertrain components and giving the Magneto 2.0 proportions similar to the “LJ” Wrangler Unlimited from 2004-06. Augmenting that stretch are a custom 3-inch lift kit and 40-inch off-road tires mounted on 20-inch wheels.

The stout, off-road specific chassis setup includes a Dynatrac 60 Pro-Rock front axle and a massive Pro-Rock Dynatrac 80 rear axle with a 5.38 ratio and lockers for both axles, custom driveshaft and an off-road suspension.

Custom, lightweight bumpers replace the factory units, front and rear. Carbon-fiber wheel flares, front and rear, cover the wide tires without adding much weight. These elements enhance the Magneto 2.0’s approach and departure angles on the trail.

Surf Blue paint, a custom carbon-fiber B-pillar, custom bikini top and carbon-fiber hood give Magneto 2.0 a powerful look. The custom hood includes a blue-tinted, transparent window that gives a view of the power unit underneath.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe Concept This spring, the Jeep brand is launching the first-ever electrified Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, which will deliver 56 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) and 25 miles of all-electric range. Easter Jeep Safari gives the Jeep brand and Jeep design team the opportunity to take production vehicles like the Grand Cherokee 4xe to the next level.

Jeep® Grand Cherokee Trailhawk PHEV Concept

Stealthy performance and quiet confidence are evident with this overlanding-inspired concept. The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk concept pairs legendary Jeep 4×4 capability with electrified freedom to deliver ultimate fuel efficiency and driving range.

The most 4×4-capable and sustainable Grand Cherokee ever, the new Trailhawk 4xe, has conquered the Rubicon Trail in full-electric operation, and now it’s ready to tackle all that Moab has to offer. It features a new class-exclusive sway-bar disconnect, allowing for improved articulation and traction over rocks and rough terrain.

Like the new production Grand Cherokee 4xe, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe concept is powered by two electric motors, a 400-volt battery pack, 2.0-liter turbocharged, four-cylinder engine and TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission for maximum efficiency and capability. It’s also equipped with Jeep’s class-exclusive Jeep Quadra-Lift air suspension to optimize ride performance, while the class-exclusive sway-bar disconnect delivers improved articulation and traction over rocks and rough terrain.

The overall design inspiration behind the Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk concept builds on the passion of overlanding Jeep SUV and pickup truck owners who dare to go off the grid and explore the unknown.

The concept boasts a custom Industrial Blue exterior, along with signature 4xe Lagoon Blue tow hooks and glare-proof black-and-blue matte Trailhawk hood decal. Adding to its adventuresome appearance is a custom roof rack with integrated tie downs, black painted Rhino Liner roof for added durability, custom fog light bezels with quad LED projector fog lamps and custom vinyl side graphics for protection against debris. Mopar rock rails add further protection against nature’s less-forgiving elements.

The interior incorporates custom saddle-colored upholstered seats with “Rodney” houndstooth inserts. The seats also feature the signature 4xe Trailhawk badge and Surf Blue stitching.

The off-roading rig also comes equipped with custom 20-inch painted Neutral Gray metallic matte wheels with 33-inch BFG mud-terrain tires. Trimmed wheel wells with custom widened flares are the perfect complement to the meatier wheel and tire combo.

Jeep ’41 Concept “Since 1941.” It’s notably displayed, a badge of honor on Jeep brand vehicles and a symbol of pride that recognizes the Jeep brand’s longstanding military heritage and legendary 4×4 capability leadership for more than 80 years.

During Easter Jeep Safari, the Jeep brand pays homage to Jeep vehicles of the past. This year, the spotlight shines brightly on the Wrangler Willys.

jeep safari electric

Jeep® ’41 Concept

Every Jeep brand vehicle has a unique story to tell, with a legacy that links back to the original Willys MB – a trusty 4×4 vehicle the U.S. Army specifically requested. The Willys MB did everything, went everywhere and was a significant influence on 4×4 vehicles built thereafter.

The retro Willys concept heading to Easter Jeep Safari this year blends military grit and determination with the Wrangler 4xe’s electric-vehicle technology. The concept’s 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain is capable of an estimated 49 MPGe and delivers up to 21 miles of nearly silent, zero-emission, electric-only propulsion, making it the most capable, technically advanced and eco-friendly Wrangler ever.

The Wrangler 4xe’s advanced powertrain provides a unique on- and off-road experience through the combination of two electric motors, a high-voltage battery pack, a high-tech 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 engine and robust TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission.

The concept’s exterior color, including wheel flares and mirror caps, is honorably decorated in an olive D.R.A.B. ‘41 matte green finish, with black powder-coated steel bumpers, Warn winch and JPP bumper hoop. The retro trim cap accentuates a tan soft-top, while JPP half doors offer an enhanced open-air experience to let even more of the outside in. A custom stenciled graphics package from the Jeep Graphic Studio and accent-colored tow hooks are the finishing touches fit for a five-star general.

Inside the ’41 concept is a retro shifter with a customized shifter cap from the Jeep Graphic Studio, along with canvas-covered seats that feature digital camo inserts and Serafil 1043 stitching. A Rhino-lined heavy texture floor in D.R.A.B. ‘41 matte green adds durability. The concept’s instrument panel inserts are also painted D.R.A.B. ‘41 matte green and the cluster features a custom Willys retro graphic.

The ’41 concept sits on a JPP 2-inch lift kit and 35-inch mud-terrain tires with 17-inch Fifteen52 wheels painted in D.R.A.B. ‘41 matte green.

Jeep Rubicon 20th Anniversary Concept Iconic off-roading destinations like the legendary Rubicon Trail in Northern California and the backcountry red-rock trails of Moab, Utah, are where boulder-conquering SUV legends are born. Twenty years ago, the Jeep brand introduced the most capable production vehicle of its time – the Wrangler Rubicon.

jeep safari electric

Jeep® Rubicon 20th Anniversary Concept

Built around a new 2003 model-year, two-door Wrangler, and adorned with the legendary Rubicon trail name, the Wrangler Rubicon took the industry by storm in the summer of 2002. The iconic Rubicon model, inspired by the enthusiasts who dreamt about it and often tried to wrench one of their own, was now available to order straight from the factory, not to mention with a warranty. It was equipped with options unheard of at the time and not available on any production Jeep SUV, including Dana 44 axles, front and rear lockers, disconnecting sway bar, rock rails, oversized 31-inch mud-terrain tires and wheel flares to truly take off-roading to the next level.

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon continues to be a “proof of concept” for the Jeep brand, where lessons learned in off-road meccas like Moab and feedback gleaned from enthusiasts and Jeep brand loyalists continue to push the brand and the entire Jeep lineup forward.

The Rubicon 20th Anniversary concept, based on the quickest, most powerful Wrangler yet – the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 – continues the legacy established two decades ago by setting the benchmark for performance and capability with its 6.4-liter V-8 engine, customized exterior and stunning interior.

The modified four-door Wrangler Rubicon 392 features an active dual-mode performance exhaust that switches between wild and outrageous, a performance hood with center scoop, custom-built half doors and Sky One-touch powertop with removable side panels for open-air freedom.

jeep safari electric

The concept’s matte Granite Crystal exterior vinyl wrap is accentuated with gold tow hooks and badging, a Rubicon 20th anniversary hood decal, American flag fender decal and Mopar swing gate air compressor.

For additional capability, a JPP 2-inch lift kit, 17-inch Mopar beadlock-capable wheels with 37-inch mud-terrain tires, steel bumpers and hoop with Warn winch and steel belly pan were added to help navigate treacherous terrain and challenging off-road conditions.

Jeep Bob Concept Designed to blur the lines between two mighty off-roaders, the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator, the Jeep Bob concept is a playful spin on the popular trend of “bobbing” the long overhangs of pickup truck beds to make it the ultimate terrain tackler.

jeep safari electric

Jeep® Bob Concept

Based on a Jeep Gladiator Rubicon, the most noticeable traits of this truck are not what’s on it, but rather what’s missing. All four doors and B-pillars have been removed for the ultimate open-air freedom. Additionally, a customized hardtop has been perforated and a canvas top has been stretched over top to provide shelter from the elements while allowing natural light through.

The Gladiator bed has been “bobbed” a full foot of length. Custom steel front and rear bumpers improve the vehicle’s approach and departure angles, and are built to withstand all the rigors of off-road use, while maintaining a stylish and sophisticated appearance. Inspired by the off-road performance world, high clearance flares make room for the larger rolling stock.

Off-road capability is further amplified by a 3-inch lift with custom off-road suspension components, Dynatrac Pro-Rock 60 axles supported by a mix of King Coils and Bypass shocks, plus massive 40-inch tires are mounted to 20-inch beadlock wheels that, all combined, provide ultimate four-wheeling confidence.

jeep safari electric

The multi-finish exterior paint scheme mixes gloss and matte finishes for added flair and texture. Inside, bright bed-lined floors plus custom trimmed seats create a fun and sporty environment. A vented carbon hood adds a notable performance appearance and ensures better airflow to the engine.

The Bob concept is powered by the award-winning, turbocharged 3.0-liter Eco-Diesel V-6 engine. To handle greater torque loads, the EcoDiesel V-6 connects to a TorqueFlite 8HP75 eight-speed automatic transmission, calibrated for low RPM shifts and to easily maneuver rigorous ground. It’s also equipped with a Mopar cold-air intake to further boost torque and improve fuel economy.

Jeep D-Coder Concept by JPP The Gloss Black Jeep Gladiator D-Coder concept carries more than 35 JPP and Mopar accessories, each painted in contrasting Maraschino Red and labeled with QR (quick response) codes, making this high-performance off-roader a rolling catalog of factory-tested and factory-backed items available for customer purchase.

Jeep® D-Coder Concept by JPP

Each scannable QR code provides a live link to the Mopar eStore consumer website for specific part numbers, specifications and pricing information. Enhanced QR codes on the bedside and hood link to the current JPP catalog.

Up front on the Gladiator D-Coder concept is a Rubicon three-piece modular bumper carrying a single-hoop tubular grille and winch guard with a pair of TYRI 7-inch LED off-road lights just above a Rubicon Warn winch. A JPP 2-inch lift kit with FOX shocks helps provide ample room for the JPP 17-by-8.5-inch five-spoke beadlock wheels riding on BFGoodrich KM3 37-inch tires.

On the front-passenger side, a JPP snorkel keeps water out of the 3.6-liter Pentastar engine when fording through high water depths while safely allowing air into the Mopar cold-air intake system under the hood. Completing the powertrain upgrade is a free-flowing Mopar cat-back dual-exhaust system. A JPP Gorilla Glass windshield offers up to three times the strength of a standard windshield. A pair of TYRI 5-inch LED lights mount securely in JPP A-pillar mounting brackets on each side of the cowl area.

Heavy-gauge steel JPP rock rails provide protection for the lower body panels and sit just below the JPP tube doors, fitted with JPP tube-door mirrors on both sides. Additional rock rails protect the truck bed behind the rear wheels and feature a replaceable nylon rock-rail trim cover. Mopar grab handles assist with easy entry and exit into the lifted cabin, while a Mopar mesh sunbonnet provides an enhanced open-air experience.

jeep safari electric

The distinct Maraschino Red contrasting theme continues inside the cabin of the Gladiator D-Coder concept with Katzkin leather covering both rows of seats. An enhanced QR code on each seat links directly to the Katzkin website for details on customizable leather options, including colors, stitching and accents, along with real-time pricing information.

Rounding out the interior are Mopar accessories, including four door-sill guards, stainless-steel pedal covers and all-weather floor mats throughout. Inside the truck bed, which is protected by a spray-in textured Mopar bedliner, a set of mounted Mopar bed rails carry a THULE low-profile cargo basket for additional storage space.

Jeep Birdcage Concept by JPP Designed as a wide-open-air extreme 4×4 machine, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe Birdcage concept showcases a variety of custom accessory innovations from JPP and Mopar, while also proving its industry-best capability, as well as its class-exclusive, off-road 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain.

jeep safari electric

Jeep® Birdcage Concept by JPP

Riding on an industry-first JPP 2-inch lift kit with FOX shocks, specifically engineered and tuned for the plug-in hybrid electric Wrangler 4xe, the vibrant Eagle Brown off-roader features Granite Crystal metallic and various signature Jeep 4xe Surf Blue accents.

Improving the front approach angle on the Wrangler 4xe Birdcage concept is a custom rock-slider skid plate that connects two rounded 2-inch steel support bars, integral to the custom seven-slot grille. The slider plate protects the recessed Warn winch, optimally placed for improved rock-crawling performance. For a unique appearance, two low-mount, Surf Blue closed-tow hoops are securely attached behind the skid plate to the side of the frame for improved tow performance. JPP five-spoke beadlock wheels measure 17 by 8.5 inches and are mounted with BFGoodrich KM3 37-inch tires. New custom flat-fender flares and wheel liners, designed specifically for larger wheel/tire combinations provide additional clearance.

The flat fender flares have integral removable daytime running light (DRL) covers for the off-road enthusiast who may require extra tire clearance for extreme off-road situations. This concept is the first 50-state legal fender flare with OEM DRL and meets 50-state tire coverage requirements.

For additional off-road protection with 37-inch tires, the Jeep design team created taillight spacers to meet federal lighting requirements. The resulting location of the light assembly enables the concept aluminum taillamp guards to better defend from trail mishaps. Illuminating the ground below the Jeep Wrangler 4xe Birdcage concept are underbody rock lights at all four corners while custom rock rails on each side feature additional slider tubes mounted for enhanced body protection.

jeep safari electric

For the serious off-roader who craves true open-air wheeling, the windshield and windshield wipers are removed. The design team tastefully closed off the instrument panel and created custom cowl and windshield-wiper filler panel covers, creating a smooth factory appearance while protecting against dirt and debris. Three concept header-mounted 14-inch JPP TYRI off-road LED lights provide sleek, modern lighting.

On the interior, Tobacco Leaf and Cocoa Brown leather seats feature distinctive seat inserts and Surf Blue accent stitching, which carries through on the instrument panel, steering wheel, shifter boot and emergency-brake handle. Front-seat occupants will find a custom JPP instrument-panel accessory rail that holds various mobile devices securely in place. Mopar stainless-steel pedal covers use black rubber pads to provide the driver with plenty of traction to the accelerator and brake pedals. Armorlite vinyl floor throughout the cabin provides a durable and easy-to-maintain surface with drain plugs for rinsing.

The Mopar design team created the Add-A-Trunk concept decklid panel that provides security for accessories when the roof is removed. Designed for any Jeep Wrangler model with the capacity to store a full-size cooler with ease, the Add-A-Trunk feature uses gas-assisted shocks to lift the decklid panel out of the way for easy access when the swing gate is open. Eight tie-down loops and five grocery-bag hooks provide extra functionality.

For additional storage, a 600-pound capacity Rhino-Rack cargo basket is securely mounted to the top of the roll cage. Inside the tailgate panel, a JPP swing-gate flip-down table provides a perfect working or eating space and sits next to an integral on-board air compressor.

2021 SEMA Concepts Three additional head-turning Jeep concepts by JPP, recently introduced at the 2021 SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) show, will be making the trip to Moab for the first time.

Among the three Jeep concepts that debuted at SEMA, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe concept showcases how passionate off-roaders can build upon the award-winning SUV with factory-backed items from JPP. The Jeep Wrangler Overlook concept stretches a four-door Wrangler Sahara into a three-row off-roader loaded with luxury touches, while the intimidating Kaiser Jeep M725 concept is the transformation of a vintage 1967 Kaiser Jeep M725 military ambulance into an ultimate off-road support machine and rolling mascot for JPP.

What’s It Like Behind the Wheel of Jeep’s EJS Concepts? We Have the Answers

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

We just went off-roading in Jeep’s latest concept vehicles in Moab. Pinch us, as it feels like a dream to actually get behind the wheel of such iconic next-generation hand-built custom vehicles at the world’s most well-known Jeep gathering, Easter Jeep Safari.

While Jeep didn’t go as wild with its Easter Jeep Safari (EJS) concepts as it has in years past , it did focus on products and brand directions that are actually coming to market very soon. You will see an all-electric Jeep Wrangler at a dealership in the next few years, you’ll see a 20th-anniversary special-edition Wrangler next year, and you’ll see some really trick new parts available through Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) later this year.

“Easter Jeep Safari is the perfect opportunity for the Jeep brand to push the limits of four-wheel-drive development and, most importantly, to stay connected with our customers,” said Jim Morrison, Senior Vice President and Head of Jeep Brand North America.

Mark Allen, Jeep’s head of design, told us that not only are the EJS Safari Concepts great marketing tools, but also that bringing them to Moab each year allows him to teach his designers how to drive off-road properly.

This allows him to trend spot and directly hear from Jeep consumers — something he calls “live research” — and get honest reactions to concept parts and designs that might make it into future products.

2022 EJS Jeep Concepts Driven

Jeep showed off seven all-new concept builds at EJS this year, and let us climb behind the wheel of each of them on trail in Moab. Sure the terrain was pretty mild, but we assure you that every one of these concept vehicles is fully capable off road and was driven without issue by a wide range of journalists.

Huge shoutout to Jeep for continuing to keep its eyes and ears on its enthusiast customers and bringing to market the products we want.

Here are our hands-on thoughts about the 2022 EJS Jeep concept vehicles after a great experience in Moab driving every one of them.

Most Anticipated: Magneto 2 Concept

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

  • Powertrain: Axial Flux electric motor with 70 kW/h battery pack (4 lithium-ion packs)
  • Performance: 625 hp, 850 lb.-ft. of torque, 0-60 in 2 seconds
  • Lift/wheels/tires: 3-in. lift, 20-in. wheels, 40-in. tires
  • Key features: 6-speed manual modified Hellcat T6060 Tranzilla transmission, 12-in. extended wheelbase to 2-door Wrangler, Dynatrac 60 up front and 80 in rear, carbon fenders/hood/B-pillar

The all-electric Magneto 2 was far and away the most sought-after to drive and the concept that Jeep was most proud of. It is an open engineering testbed that shows us that Jeep can make a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) that is true to the off-road-focused DNA of the brand.

Climbing into this machine takes effort, as it’s rolling on 40-inch tires. There is plenty of room to easily get in though, as the wheelbase has been stretched 12 inches, giving it LJ Wrangler Unlimited proportions.

Behind the wheel, it just feels special, especially so because it has a third pedal and a six-speed shifter. It’s near-silent, besides some electrical noises from under the hood. And once it clicked into gear and rolling, all you really hear is the big tires rolling across the terrain.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

The manual transmission works just like any other, but isn’t needed to get going and will never stall the vehicle. Last year, Magneto had 285 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, and this year, Magneto 2 has 625 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque. With these massive power upgrades this year, it equates to the need for a built Tranzilla transmission and burly built axles at each end.

With that power and equipment to put it down, Magneto 2 is said to be able to do 0-60 mph in just 2 seconds. Sadly, Jeep did not let us test this claim. We can say that power was never lacking when we crawled this Jeep over ledges or gave it a bit of skinny pedal on the flats.

While you get three pedals in this Jeep, it offers one-pedal drive-through regenerative braking. Select an appropriate gear for the terrain and speed you want to go, and the accelerator pedal does the rest.

Magneto 2 feels super open to the world and ready for adventure. The blue-tinted sky panel in the custom bikini top projects a blue hue into the cabin when the sun is overhead, letting you know you’re in no ordinary Jeep.

Instead of a winch, there are low-profile lightweight bumpers at both ends of the vehicle, for a trim look and increased approach and departure angles. Aggressively styled carbon fender flares complement the carbon B-pillar, and hood. The hood also has a cool blue-tinted transparent window that gives you a view of the electric power unit underneath.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

The real question is if the all-electric Jeep, which is sure to hit the market in the next few years, will be based on the tried-and-true super-off-road-capable Wrangler or a custom EV chassis that allows for better packaging and utilizes Wrangler off-road componentry.

After talking to a wide range of people at Jeep, my best guess is that they will have the next-generation Wrangler accommodate a wide range of ICE and EV powertrains.

Surprise Favorite: Bob Concept

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

  • Powertrain: 3.0L Eco-Diesel V-6
  • Lift/wheels/tires: 3-in. lift, 20-in. beadlock wheels, 40-in. tires
  • Key features: Bobbed 12 in., doors and B-pillars removed, custom hardtop/soft-top combo, carbon hood and fenders, AEV front bumper

Our surprise favorite of the 2022 EJS Jeep Concepts was Bob. The name, of course, comes from the rear overhang reduction, known as “bobbing.”

Basically, the frame rails and body/bed are cut down behind the rear axle, in order to optimize departure angle for extreme off-road adventures. Jeep took a full 12 inches off the rear of the Bob Concept.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

Bob started life as a diesel Jeep Gladiator Rubicon before being trimmed and tweaked. The doors and B-pillars are permanently removed, and the hood and fenders have been replaced with lightweight carbon versions. Even the hardtop roof has been modified to let light through from the canvas top that is stretched over it.

Bob felt like it could tackle any off-road obstacle you put in its path with ease. The super-torquey Eco-Diesel powers massive 40-inch tires that roll on burly Dynatrac Pro-Rock 60 axles suspended with some of the latest and greatest shocks from King. Strong, capable, and easy are the words we’d use to describe driving off-road in the Bob Concept.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

While the pumpkin orange isn’t our favorite shade of orange, the overall look of the entire vehicle is super-classy and custom. Besides the combo of gloss and matte paint on the outside, the inside has also been bed-lined for durability and the seats tweaked for a sporty look to match the exterior.

Urban Assault Winner: Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe Concept

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

  • Powertrain:  2.0L turbo 4-cylinder and 2 electric motors w/400-volt battery pack
  • Performance:  56 MPGe, 25 mi. of all-electric range
  • Lift/wheels/tires: Stock Quadra-Lift air suspension, 20-in. wheels, 33-in. M/T tires

Hitting dealer lots very soon, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe (PHEV) is sure to be a big seller. It offers 25 miles of all-electric range as well as off-road goodies like a front sway-bar disconnect, rock rails, and adjustable-height air ride suspension. Jeep even tackled the Rubicon trail with the production version of this vehicle, in full electric mode.

For the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe Concept, Jeep brought us some big aesthetic upgrades and bigger tires. Besides the blue color scheme and graphics package, the roof is Rhino-lined black, and custom 3D-printed roof racks with integrated tie-downs were installed.

While the roof rack mounts look super cool, we weren’t a big fan of the Rhino lining. Instead of looking tough, it cheapened the otherwise upscale look of the concept.

Inside the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe concept is super sharp-looking saddle leather upholstery with ‘Rodney’ houndstooth cloth inserts. Combined with blue contrast stitching and the signature 4xe Trailhawk badging, the inside of this concept vehicle is just a really nice and luxurious place to be.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

Wedged under this concept are 33-inch mud-terrain tires without any suspension modifications, which took some considerable fender trimming and widened fender flares. Those meaty tires are wrapped on 20-inch wheels.

While big wheels and tiny tire sidewalls are not optimal for off-road adventures, they do look really good! The setup also worked better than we would have expected off-road.

Coming Soon: Rubicon 20th Concept

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

  • Powertrain: 6.4L V-8
  • Lift/wheels/tires: JPP 2-in. lift, 17-in. wheels, 37-in. M/T tires
  • Key features: Sky One-Touch powertop, custom half doors, winch, swing gate air compressor

Take a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 and add some nice 20th-anniversary touches and you get the 20th Concept. The Rubicon was born in 2003 as a two-door Wrangler, so we’ll see its 20th anniversary next year.

After talking with the good people at Jeep, we’re pretty positive we’ll see a special-edition 20th-anniversary Rubicon on the market next year — and it will likely have many of the touches seen on this concept.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

The Rubicon 20th Concept has a Granite Crystal exterior wrap and gold accents, with an anniversary hood decal, and American flag fender decals. It also features custom half doors and a Sky One-Touch powertop with removable side panels.

Off-road goodies include 17-inch wheels wrapped in 37-inch mud-terrain tires, steel bumpers, a Warn winch , steel skid plates, and a soon-to-be-released Mopar swing gate air compressor.

The Wrangler Rubicon 392 just puts a massive smile across your face, on and off road. Add in some refined looks, an open-air top, and big tires, and you’ve got a winning package.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

Jeep always brings out at least one concept to EJS that harkens back to its past. Usually, that’s an old Jeep with modern components and custom touches. But this year, they went the route of taking a new Wrangler Willys 4xe and giving it some throwback touches.

“Since 1941” is displayed somewhere on all modern Jeep vehicles, and recognizes Jeep’s military heritage. The idea behind the ’41 Concept is to honor the original Willys MB that served the U.S. Army for many years.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

The entire ’41 Concept is done up in matte olive D.R.A.B. with sand and digital camo canvas interior. Even the Rhino-lined floor, instrument panel inserts, and gauge cluster are finished in olive D.R.A.B. Willys retro graphics and stenciled graphics help connect the Jeep with its heritage. The ’41 Concept also gets half doors, a tan soft top, and a winch.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

We particularly loved the retro shifter and customized 3D-printed shifter caps, versions of which are found on many of this year’s concepts. The ’41 Concept drove like a well-sorted Wrangler 4xe, but with some no-frills, get-the-job-done Army attitude.

Cool Parts: Birdcage Concept

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

  • Powertrain:  4xe PHEV w/2.0L turbocharged I-4
  • Lift/wheels/tires: 2-in. JPP lift, 17-in. JPP beadlock wheels, 37-in. M/T tires
  • Key features: Custom lighting, DRL fenders, Fox shocks, custom sliders, custom front bumper, Add-A-Trunk, swing gate air compressor

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

You might not think that brown and blue are colors that would go together well (we didn’t), but they really work well on the Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) Birdcage concept. Based on a Wrangler Rubicon 4xe, this concept is all about showing off some cool new accessories, and a few prototype parts, from JPP. It is also all about open-air off-road adventures, having no windshield or roof.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

Big 37-inch tires fit under new custom flat-fender flares and wheel liners. The fender flares feature the first 50-state-legal — for both daytime running lights (DRL) and tire coverage requirements — integral removable DRL covers.

The idea is that they provide more tire clearance when removed for extreme off road, but are safer and road-legal on the highway. Even the taillights have been custom-fitted to meet federal lighting requirements for a 37-inch tire fitment, while still being trail-worthy with aluminum taillamp guards.

Fox shocks provided a smooth ride, while a custom rock-slider skid plate integrated into the front end and custom side rock sliders protected the Jeep on the trail. For carrying big gear, a heavy-duty (600-pound capacity) Rhino-Rack cargo basket is mounted atop the roll cage.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

We also really dug the out-now JPP swing-gate flip-down table, the soon-to-market integrated swing-gate air compressor system, and the Jeep tool roll. Both of the future accessories looked like high-quality, well-thought-out products that any Jeep user would value when out on the trail.

The concept “Add-A-Trunk” decklid panel was an interesting possible future JPP part as well. It flips up on gas struts, provides secure storage on top, and covers up gear in the rear cargo area.

Buy Now: D-Coder Concept

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

  • Powertrain: V-6
  • Key features: All the JPP & Mopar parts and QR codes to buy them now

Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) took a Jeep Gladiator Rubicon and threw more than 35 JPP and Mopar accessories at it. The gloss black Jeep has every accessory in a contrasting Maraschino Red color, which are each labeled with a QR code.

Basically, the D-Coder Concept is a rolling catalog, where customers can buy parts online directly from their phones by scanning the QR codes on the vehicle.

2022 EJS Jeep Concept Drive

You could pretty easily buy and have built at the dealership this Jeep pickup yourself today, minus having all the red accessories, without some extra effort.

We particularly liked the Thule basket rack over the truck bed, as it would allow for more outdoor adventure toys on your off-road adventures. The tube doors are also tons of good fun on the trail, but sadly not all that practical for daily Jeep adventures.

Jeep Blends Retro and Modern in Latest Moab Concepts

The Easter Jeep Safari is right around the corner, so it only makes sense for Jeep to show off its custom chops.

jeep easter jeep safari concepts

  • The Easter Jeep Safari is a massive off-road gathering in Moab, Utah, during the last week in March.
  • The design team prepared a custom Gladiator, Grand Wagoneer, and a pair of custom Wranglers ahead of the event.
  • These custom concepts highlight the design team’s prowess but also feature pieces available out of the Jeep Performance Parts catalog.

Spread across the portfolio, Jeep prepared a Gladiator, Grand Wagoneer, and two different approaches at a custom Wrangler. While these custom concepts won’t hit the dealership anytime soon, the company has borrowed some ideas from these concepts over the years and shuffled them into production.

Jeep Wrangler Low Down Concept

Kicking off the concept run, it’s probably most wise to discuss the pair of Wrangler machines. The first Wrangler echoes another Easter Jeep Concept that was dubbed the Lower 40 concept over a decade ago and is clearly the inspiration for the modern Low Down Concept.

This new concept rides on 42 inches of BFGoodrich Krawler rubber that wraps a set of 20-inch wheels. Surprisingly, these massive tires are managed by a stock Wrangler Rubicon suspension. Dana 60 axles fore and aft pack 5.38:1 gearsets to take the power from the 6.4-liter Hemi V8 and send it to that big tire package.

Naturally, there’s plenty of custom bodywork. High-clearance fender flares are tasked with covering the tires and keeping things from rubbing. Shortened front and rear bumpers help with approach and departure angles. Jeep also made a custom see-through power dome hood to show off the 6.4-liter mill.

The rear door handles were deleted to make it look like an LJ-series Wrangler despite having two more doors. Jeep finished this custom Wrangler in poison apple red. A minimalist, motorsport-inspired interior helps round out this Wrangler.

Jeep Wrangler 4xe Willys Dispatcher Concept

The second custom Wrangler dubbed the Jeep Willys Dispatcher started life as a Jeep Wrangler 4xe. This custom 4xe rides on a set of 36-inch Traxion tires that wrap a set of 16-inch by 7-inch alloy faux steel wheels. This tall and narrow concept harks back to vintage offroading, and it sports a Warn winch housed in the custom front bumper and is finished in element 115 green.

While the outside is relatively mild, this PHEV Wrangler features an over-the-top interior, with custom houndstooth and leather seat covers to accent the vintage vibe. A JPP Bikini top and vinyl floor covering round out the old-school aesthetic.

Gallery: Jeep Gladiator Rubicon High Top Concept

Jeep’s custom Gladiator also leans into yesterday’s styling with a wild custom finish. Dubbed Gingersnap, this Gladiator sports a two-tone ginger snap metallic finish with a black graphic package—looking like it was ripped right out of the 1980s.

This custom pickup rides on a set of 40-inch BFGoodrich K03 tires that wrap 18-inch KMC Grenade Crawl wheels. Concept JPP flat fenders advance the vintage style and could one day make their way to the JPP catalog.

Like the other off-roaders, this Gladiator sports a set of Dana 60 axles that pack 5.38 to 1 gears. A modified AEV front bumper houses a Warn winch, and an AccuAir air suspension gives you an adjustable ride height.

Jeep Vacationeer Concept

Rounding out the custom Jeeps is the Vacationeer. Based on the Grand Wagoneer Series III, this custom luxe family hauler leans into the overlanding lifestyle. Riding on a set of 35-inch BFGoodrich mud-terrain tires that wrap 18-inch wheels, this Jeep still has some off-roading chops. There’s also a custom woodgrain graphic that ties its spearmint paint to the Wagoneer’s heritage.

While the color looks cool, the biggest change might be the roof tent and interior. The folks at Jeep removed the second and third row of seats to make this rig better suited for sleeping. There’s also a custom, carbon-fiber RedTail Overland SkyLoft that sits on the roof.

Accessing this pop-up tent is as easy as climbing through the hole in the roof that Jeep made. That’s right: You climb into the roof tent from inside the cabin. A custom Kiel James interior rounds out the major changes.

Sorry, none of these custom machines are for sale, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if some of these styling decisions trickle down to the production lines—namely, that woodgrain graphic. If you want to see these in person, they’ll all be at the Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah this month.

2024 Easter Jeep Safari: Four New Concepts, Each with a Different Purpose and Palette

Jeep returns to Moab with a quartet of Wrangler, Gladiator, and Grand Wagoneer–based concepts that go high, low, and retro.

Jeep Vacationeer Concept

jeep concept

We knew the creatives at Jeep couldn't keep their hands off the new Wagoneer for long, and the Vacationeer is here to prove us right. And no, that's not a typo; the "ee" is a not-so-subtle nod to the Wagoneer it's based on. As long as we're pointing out the obvious, it would be pointless to pay homage to the Wagoneers of yore without at least a touch of woodgrain, and the Vacationeer wears it in the thin-strip style of select Jeep models from the late 20th century, including the low-volume Wagoneer Brougham of the early 1980s.

The custom exterior paint, dubbed Spearminted, is similar to the hue of the paint on the Willys Dispatcher Concept also found on this list, but it ramps up the spent nuclear fuel rod effect to Simpsons levels of iridescence. Larger wheel openings and custom body-side flare extensions shroud 35-inch BFGoodrich mud-terrain tires mounted to 18 x 9.0-inch 701 Method racing wheels. The tire and wheel package provide a 1.5-inch lift while front and rear skid plates help to deflect obstacles, and a front-mounted Warn winch and a trio of 11-inch TYRI LED lights provide peace of mind. Jeep's 510-hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six "Hurricane" engine provides the power to keep the vacation rolling.

jeep concept

The Overlanding vibe is strong thanks to the custom carbon-fiber RedTail Overland Skyloft affixed to the roof. Featuring climate control, room for two, and panoramic viewing capabilities, it seems like the ideal place to spend a night in the boonies, or even your driveway. To make climbing up and in via the weatherproof pass-through easier, Jeep removed the second- and third-row seating and mounted a small step that doubles as a table.

The rear area features a bed liner to stow gear. Distinguished fashion designer and Wagoneer enthusiast/owner Kiel James Patrick was tapped for the front upholstery, coming up with a design featuring classic Jeep vehicles dotting a distinctive and charming New England–inspired pattern. (Attn. Jeep: You know you could sell this fabric for real, right?)

Jeep Wrangler Low Down Concept

a red jeep on a dirt road

Longtime fans will likely remember the Jeep Lower 40 concept the brand dropped back in 2009 at the 43rd annual Easter Jeep Safari. This year's Jeep Low Down concept exists as an update of sorts, following the theme of fitting the biggest tires possible without altering the suspension or lifting the ride height.

The formula involves some clever cleaver work to make room for ginormous BFGoodrich Krawler 42 x 14.5 R-20 mud-terrain tires mounted on 20-inch beadlock wheels. Custom carbon-fiber fender flares help facilitate the project. Otherwise, the Wrangler Rubicon 392 suspension remains untouched, but Dana 60 axles with 5.38 gears are brought in to replace the standard Rubicon Dana 44s. The result is a low center of gravity teamed with increased ground clearance, breakover, and approach and departure angles.

The exterior is finished in Poison Apple Red paint, and the hood is a custom carbon-fiber unit with a see-through power dome. The profile gets a bit of streamlining with the removal of the exterior door handles, and a race-style fuel filler resides in the driver's-side rear quarter.

jeep concept

Interior tweaks include a Rhino-lined floor, black leather seats with cloth inserts, and a radio delete instrument panel. "Listening to the engine is enough, in the Low Down," says Chris Piscitelli, design manager for Dodge/SRT, who had a hand in creating this year's concepts. A custom red-tinted semi-transparent bikini top makes sure any light that passes through glows with a red hue.

Like its Lower 40 inspiration, the Jeep Low Down relies on a V-8 engine, in this case a modern 475-hp 6.4-liter 392 (you saw the numerous callouts, right?) and an eight-speed automatic transmission, whereas the Lower 40 made do with just a 390-hp 5.7-liter Hemi.

Jeep Gladiator Rubicon High Top Concept

jeep concept

Born from the efforts of Jeep Performance Parts designers and the Mopar engineering teams, the Gladiator Rubicon High Top Concept channels the '70s J-series pickups, particularly the highly decorated versions from the mid-'70s when Jeep tried to get hip. (Remember the Jeep J-10 Honcho ?)

Brown was the official color of the 1970s, so Jeep starts off with a two-tone Ginger Snap metallic exterior with bold graphics that look the part. Interior mods are subtle but appropriate. The seats have been trimmed with custom quilted and perforated tan and black Alea leather, and JPP logos reside on the headrests. JPP provides the sun bonnet, pedal kit, floor mats, and doorsill guards. JPP also provided some concept flat fender flares.

jeep concept

Mods from outside vendors include a front bumper from American Expedition Vehicles—check the custom protective hoop sitting just above a Warn winch—rock rail power steps from Rock Slide Engineering, and a truck bed storage system with lockable dual sliding drawers from Decked.

Power comes from the trusty 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine mated to a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. Torque is funneled to Dana 60 front and rear axles with matching 5.38:1 gears, then moves on to 40 x 13.5 R-18 BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3 tires mounted on 18 x 9.0-inch Satin Black KMC Grenade Crawl beadlock wheels. An AccuAir adjustable suspension helps fine-tune the suspension for the task at hand.

Willys Dispatcher Concept

jeep concept

Aside from the paint, the Willys Dispatcher doesn't look much different from the current Wrangler. And although there's a lot more going on here than just its Element 115 green paint, we'd be fine if there wasn't. As designer Chris Piscitelli not so coyly mentioned in brief preview, more than one current Jeep color first debuted on concept vehicles like this. A gloss-black windshield surround almost disappears—along with the standard black roll cage—due to the high contrast with the nuclear-age-inspired green paint.

Exterior color aside, the Willys Dispatcher, which counts the postwar-era Willys Jeeps as its inspiration, has some pretty cool features, including front and rear Dana 50 axles with 4:70 gears and 36-inch Traxion tires mounted on 16 x 7.0-inch white steel wheels for the perfect vintage look. The bumpers are crafted to look homemade old-school, the front with a beefy Warn 8274 winch mounted. The flat fenders and "Willys" stamped lettering in the hood really play into the retro vibe.

jeep concept

Inside, distressed saddle leather mixes with houndstooth cloth inserts; combined with the low back seats—sans headrests—the midcentury vibe is palpable. The vinyl flooring is from Jeep Performance Products, as are the bikini top and the onboard air compressor.

For all the looking back, the powertrain is undeniably modern, the Willys Dispatcher using Jeep's 2.0-liter plug-in-hybrid 4xe propulsion system that delivers 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque through an eight-speed automatic. It's a blend of old and new that successfully transcends time.

These 4 New Jeep Safari 2024 Concepts Run From Retro To Outright Rude

I n Moab, Utah, from March 23 to 31, Jeep is once again holding its Easter Jeep Safari event. Easter has always been the time of year when Jeep shows off whatever wacky concepts it's working on, and the 58th annual event is no different. For this year, Jeep brought out four concepts: the Low Down, the Willys Dispatcher, the High Top, and the Vacationeer.

Starting from the least crazy, the Willys Dispatcher has the bones of a Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid and is supposed to call to mind the first generation of Jeeps meant for regular people who weren't in service in the European of Pacific Theaters of World War II. The powertrain is the same: a 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor that outputs a combined 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.

The body and aesthetics, however, are a different story. The paint is a color that Jeep is calling Element 115 Green, and the steelie-inspired wheels are 1950s cream-colored. The inside is saddle leather and cloth seats. To further give it a retro look, the headrests were removed because why not? It's a convertible with only the slightest impression of a conventional "roof." A huge embossed "Willys" logo on the hood completes the Jeep's classic vibe.

The Vacationeer And The High Top

Next is the Vacationeer. It's based on the Grand Wagoneer, only with a fairly substantial lift and the obligatory 35-inch tires. It sports a number of skid plates underneath for overlanding aptitude. But the centerpiece is the huge rooftop tent supplied by RedTail Overland, called the Skyloft. The interior temperature is adjustable (because, of course, it is), and can fit up to two people. It's powered by the twin-turbo Hurricane inline-six engine that makes 510 horsepower (the same engine that will feature in the upcoming new Dodge Charger), and it's finished in a color called "Spearminted." A rooftop tent on a luxury SUV isn't that unusual, but in this case, the factory roof of the Grand Wagoneer has been removed, making Vacationeer essentially a two-story camping spot.

The Jeep Gladiator Rubicon High Top concept is fitted with 40-inch tires and an adjustable air suspension system. According to a Jeep press release, it was made to show the Gladiator's off-road credibility. It sports a "Ginger Snap" paint scheme and the tried and true Pentastar 3.6-liter V6.

The Jeep Low Down

Lastly, the Jeep Low Down Concept takes the cake for the most insane Jeep the automaker will show off. It's powered by the soon-to-be departed 392 V8 and is based on the Wrangler Rubicon 392. It has 42-inch tires on 20-inch wheels and is completely absurd, whatever angle you look at it. To make matters weirder, there's a clear cover on the hood so you can see the engine. Plus, there's no infotainment system to speak of. Jeep exterior designer Chris Piscitelli points out, there's a two-mode exhaust that can be set to "loud and entirely obnoxious: that's all the entertainment you need in this one." That's about as unambiguous of a reason you can have.

There's little chance the Jeep-buying public will see cars like the four Easter Safari concepts hit dealership lots anytime soon, and the event really acts as a testing ground for both Jeep engineers and the Jeep Performance Parts division. That said, it's hard not to get at least a little excited to see goofy factory Jeeps with wild (and in some cases impractical) modifications thrashing about the desert.

Wrangler low down concept.

Jeep has built more than 100 of these custom 4x4s since 2008, but only a select few have managed to stick in the minds of the Jeep faithful. The new Rubicon 392 -based Wrangler Low Down concept pays homage to one of the most famous Easter Jeep Safari builds, the Lower 40 concept from 2009. That early build featured a V-8 engine swap under the hood, and made use of gigantic 40-inch rubber despite a stock ride height. The new truck is a bit more extreme, trading that old-school 5.7-liter V-8 for the potent 6.4-liter engine provided by the Rubicon 392. The new build also retains the stock suspension package from the Rubicon 392 model, but swaps out the stock Dana 44 axle for more robust Dana 60s with 5.38 gears. Those beefier axles help support the truck’s massive 42-inch BFGoodrich Krawler mud-terrain tires, which come installed on a set of 20-inch beadlock wheels. The stock fenders have been replaced with a set of flared carbon units, which help give the truck a purposeful stance. A Poison Apple Red paint job and a red-tinted bikini top are a nice nod to the original concept as well.

2024 jeep willys dispatcher concept

Wrangler 4xe Willys Dispatcher Concept

The second Wrangler build looks even further back in brand history, paying respects to the early civilian model Jeep from the post-war era . Based on the 4xe hybrid model, this Willys Dispatcher Concept gets some old-school appearance tweaks, including custom steel bumpers at both ends. The hood also features stamped “Willys” branding, which it shares with the original seven-barred product. Upgraded Dana 50 axles with 4.70 gears help increase capability, as do the Super Traxion 36-inch tires. That rubber comes wrapped around retro-style steel wheels, which are finished in a cream hue. The SUV itself is finished in a bespoke shade of Element 115 Green paint, which is accented nicely by the blacked out windshield banner. The best looking part of this custom SUV is the interior, complete with distressed saddle leather and houndstooth inserts throughout. The headrests have been pulled from the seats to improve that retro appearance. It’s the sort of thing we’d love to see make its way to the production models, however unlikely. The throwback style Warn Winch is another nice touch and helps to round out the package.

Gladiator High Top Concept

The Gladiator High Top Concept is a bit less of an involved build, borrowing mostly from the Jeep Performance Parts catalog. Upgrades include items like an AccuAir air suspension system, which work with Dana 60 axles at both ends to support 4x4 endeavors. The suspension system is put to the ground via a gigantic set of 40-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3s, which come wrapped around a set of 18-inch KMC Grenade Crawl beadlock wheels. A set of flat fender flares and AEV bumpers ensure that the large rubber is covered and ready for road-use, while giving the pickup some additional flair. Out back you’ll find a truck bed storage system by Decked, which brings a bit of overlanding capability to the build. A Warn Winch and some rock slider steps have also been added should any off-roading adventures take a turn for the worse.

2024 jeep vacationeer concept

Vacationeer Concept

Rounding out the 2024 Easter Jeep Safari lineup is the Grand Wagoneer-based Vacationeer Concept. The design is a clear nod to the original Wagoneer models, complete with the oh-so lovely wood grain graphics missing from the current production model. The woody look pairs very nicely with the Spearmint paint, which has slightly more white in the mix than the aforementioned Element 115 color. The wheel openings have also been massaged to make room for the larger 35-inch tires, which come wrapped around 18-inch Method Race wheels. A 1.5-inch suspension lift adds a bit of aggression to the stance, while bringing a bit more off-road capability to the table. The rear rows of seats have been removed in favor of a carbon-fiber RedTail Overland Skyloft, which serves as a passthrough rooftop tent for ideal camping conditions. Under the hood sits a high output variant of the Hurricane inline-six engine, which provides 510 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. That said, the real highlight of this build is found on the interior, where Jeep enlisted the assistance of fashion designer Kiel James Patrick. The custom flannel seats feature famous Jeep models from years gone by, and fit with the theme perfectly. This is exactly how the Grand Wagoneer should have looked in production form, but we’ll settle for a concept like this one.

The Easter Jeep Safari runs through March 31st, 2024 in Moab, Utah. If you’re a diehard Jeeper, it might be worth the trek to lay eyes on these unique concept vehicles.

Jeep honors past with 2024 Easter Jeep Safari concepts

Joel Feder

As the Easter Jeep Safari kicks off for the 58th year, the off-road automaker continues its tradition of creating concepts for enthusiasts to drool over.

On Monday, Jeep unveiled four concepts for the 2024 event, including two modified Wranglers, one Gladiator, and a Grand Wagoneer. Each concept gives a strong nod to the past in various ways while putting a focus on today’s consumer trends. They’ll be on display and roam the 39 trails at the event, which takes place in Moab, Utah, from March 23-31.

Here’s a breakdown of each of the concepts.

Jeep Willys Dispatcher concept

Jeep Willys Dispatcher concept

Jeep Willys Dispatcher concept

This retro off-roader celebrates Jeep’s Willys roots with a touch of post-WWII Americana. The basis is the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe plug-in hybrid, but it’s a far stretch from the electrified SUV consumers buy off dealer lots.

Underneath, the axles have been swapped for beefy Dana 50s at both ends with 4.70 gears. Those axles bolt to custom 16-inch vintage-looking steel wheels painted bright white. The Jeep team wrapped those wheels in 36-inch Super Traxion tires that are tall, narrow, and knobby. A 2.0-inch lift provides more ground clearance.

To complete the vintage exterior look, the hood has Willys stamped into its sides like the early military Jeeps. Both bumpers have been replaced with custom steel units with cut-off ends. Those bumpers both feature what’s known as “helicopter hooks,’ which WWII helicopters would hook to haul Jeeps through the air. A Warn 8274 Classic winch sits up front should things get a bit sketchy when off-roading.

The exterior is finished with Element 115 green paint contrasted by a gloss black windshield surround and roll bars. Inside, Jeep retrimmed the seats with distressed leather and contrasting houndstooth inserts. The trim on the dashboard matches with houndstooth cloth. For a more military-like look, the headrests were removed and the carpeting was replaced by a Jeep Performance Parts vinyl floor covering.

Jeep Low Down concept

Jeep Low Down concept

Jeep Low Down concept

Jeep said the Low Down concept marks a celebration of the V-8 engine. It mixes vintage race-inspired design with capability.

The Low Down is about speed, noise, and capability. To that end, it’s based on the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 with its 6.4-liter V-8.

Jeep beefed up the concept’s running gear with Dana 60 axles front and rear with 5.38 gears. The suspension remains stock, but the entire package rides high thanks to BFGoodrich Krawler 42-inch tires mounted on 20-inch brass beadlock-capable wheels. Between the massive tires and stubby bumpers, the approach and departure angle are nearly “nothing,” according to the Jeep team.

The exterior is meant to evoke “race car vibes,” the Jeep team said, with Candy Apple Red paint, custom high-clearance flat-top carbon-fiber fender flares, no rear door handles, and custom carbon-fiber hood with a see-through power dome featuring eight holes drilled into it for a view of the motor.

The interior’s covered by a custom translucent red bikini top and the floor’s been coated in Rhino Liner. Jeep stripped out the Wrangler’s touchscreen for a more focused interior. “The exhaust has two settings, loud and obnoxious, which is all the entertainment you need,” the Jeep team said. The radio has been deleted because “the motor’s the entertainment.”

Jeep High Top concept

Aiming for attainable performance, the Jeep High Top concept starts life as a Gladiator Rubicon and grabs from the Jeep Performance Parts bin.

In the name of enhanced capability, the Jeep team swapped out the axles for Dana 60s with 5.38 gearing. The truck rides on AccuAir air suspension that can be adjusted on the fly. Massive BFGoodrich 40-inch K03 all-terrain tires wrap black silver-lipped 18-inch Grenade Crawl beadlock-capable wheels. To clear those tires, Jeep Performance Parts flat fender flares have been added, which marks the first time the team has put these on a Gladiator. Fans will note these flares have been used on Wranglers in the past.

The stock 3.6-liter V-6 sits under the hood and it’s hooked to the Gladiator’s 8-speed automatic transmission.

The exterior reaches for a 1970s and ’80s J10 look with a black and Ginger Snap paint scheme. Aficionados will note a similar paint color originally dubbed Ginger Poly or Golden Ginger existed on the J10 back in the day. The retro two-tone graphics play off a black Jeep Performance Parts sun-bonnet top.

An AEV RX front bumper was modified with a low hoop so it wouldn’t impact the front camera’s viewing angle. Rock Slide Engineering rock rails protect the truck’s side rails and double as power assist steps for shorter occupants.

Inside, custom seats feature quilted leather from Alea Leather and the Jeep Performance Parts accessory rail sits atop the dash. This allows GoPros, iPads, and other electronics to be mounted on the dash easily for the day’s adventure. The bed sports a Decked storage system for trail gear, and it can be locked.

Jeep Vacationeer concept

Jeep is finally ready to give the people what they want: wood trim on the side of a Wagoneer. Well, some people.

Based on the Grand Wagoneer Series III , the Vacationeer honors the nameplate’s heritage while aiming for fans’ nostalgia heart strings.

The massive Wagoneer concept receives a 1.5-inch lift and rides on white 18-inch 701 Method Racing wheels. Jeep wraps the wheels in 35-inch BFGoodrich Mud Terrain tires, but for the rubber to clear custom body-colored fender flares were installed after opening the wheel wells a bit. Custom front and rear skid plates, a revised front fascia with LED off-road lights, and a Warn winch up front complete the exterior changes.

Spearminted paint contrasts with a white protective coating of Rhino liner covers the roof. A custom rack sits atop the SUV with auxiliary lighting and a RedTail Skyloft roof tent. The key design bit is the wood grain stripe that adorns the sides of the Vacationeer concept. It’s a decal inspired by the woodgrain paneling on the ’60s and ’70s Wagoneers, not the full body panels from the ’80s. The decal is textured to feel like wood.

Inside, Tupelo leather seats feature inserts designed by New England’s clothing magnet Kiel James Patrick. Those inserts feature Easter eggs with little TJs, CJs, and JTs hidden within the plaid design. The second- and third-row seats and second-row sunroof were removed. That leaves easy access to the roof-top tent from within the Vacationeer. The Jeep team Rhino-lined the floors to make cleanup easier. Jeep even put a vintage luggage set inside the Vacationeer concept for that old-school feeling.

If you're thinking about purchasing a vehicle rugged enough to finesse rocky trails, chances are, one make comes to mind: Jeep. This specialty automotive manufacturer has a long history of producing trucks and SUVs capable of off-highway adventures — so much so that the term jeep is used by many to refer to all SUVs, whether the vehicle in question is a true Jeep or not.

Jeep took root in WWII as the name of the now-iconic four-wheel-drive military vehicle produced by Willys-Overland and Ford for the U.S. Army. The name's origin is somewhat of a mystery; popular belief is that it morphed from "GP," or "general purpose," though others have suggested that it was a nickname derived from a character featured in the Popeye comic strip of the time.

The mid-1940s saw the introduction of the first civilian Jeep, the CJ-2A. It offered many features not available on military versions, such as a tailgate, an external fuel cap and a side-mounted spare tire, and was targeted mainly toward farmers and construction workers.

Civilian Jeeps caught on with the public, and by the 1950s, new models such as the CJ-3B and the CJ-5 had been introduced. The CJ-5 had the longest production run of any Jeep vehicle, continuing for 30 years after its introduction in the early '50s. The company changed owners during this decade as Willys-Overland was sold to Kaiser in 1953.

Jeep broke new ground in the 1960s with the debut of its Wagoneer. Geared toward active families, this early SUV was the first four-wheel-drive vehicle equipped with an automatic transmission. A new "Dauntless" V6 became available as an option on the CJ-5 and CJ-6 in 1965. This was the first time that a Jeep CJ could be equipped with a V6. Packing 155 horses, the engine's horsepower almost doubled that offered by the standard four-cylinder.

By the 1970s, Jeep had changed ownership yet again, with the purchase of Kaiser-Jeep by American Motors Corporation. New models like the CJ-7 and the Scrambler were rolled out. Additionally, the company unveiled some new technology with the introduction of the world's first automatic full-time four-wheel-drive system. Dubbed Quadra-Trac, it was available in the CJ-7 as well as in full-size Jeep trucks and wagons. During this decade, Jeep's fortunes soared as four-wheel-drive vehicles became increasingly popular with large sections of American buyers.

The 1980s saw the introduction of the Cherokee and Wrangler. The Cherokee was one of the first of the new breed of SUVs — high-riding midsize wagons that skyrocketed in popularity as the decade progressed. The Wrangler replaced the CJ series in 1987 and offered the raw functionality of the CJ along with more comfort features. That year also saw the purchase of American Motors by Chrysler, with the Jeep brand becoming part of Chrysler's Jeep/Eagle division. One of Jeep's most popular models, the Grand Cherokee, debuted for 1993. This handsome, midsize SUV offered considerably more comfort and luxury than the smaller Cherokee while still providing stout off-road capability.

Jeep fell under the umbrella of DaimlerChrysler after Chrysler and Daimler-Benz merged in 1998. This partnership resulted in a few new models, such as the Liberty and Compass, though none were able to attain great sales success. In 2007, Daimler sold the Chrysler Group to a private equity firm. It is now under control of Fiat.

More recently, the company has added a couple of enticing models to its lineup (including a four-door version of the Wrangler and the pavement-scorching Grand Cherokee SRT8) and made substantial performance and quality improvements under the hoods and within the cabins. As such, we expect Jeep will not only maintain a loyal group of customers but will also bring new fans into the fold.

Jeep Safari Yumuri day tour - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

How to safari without the Jeep

CLOSE ENCOUNTER Visitors cross paths with an elephant in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park during a Remote Africa safari.

Our group of six chatted quietly as we strode across the dusty, sun-scorched terrain of Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park early on a September morning, the dry season’s unrelenting rays warm on our faces. Suddenly our guide, Alex Phiri, stopped and raised his hand, bringing his finger to his lips.

I followed his gaze. Some 100 yards straight ahead stood a 3,500-pound hippopotamus, staring squarely in our direction.

Phiri quickly ushered us behind a tree, where we cowered, our hearts beating fast—the only sound birdsong. The world’s third-largest land mammal, the hippo is ferocious when it feels threatened, and can be more dangerous than notoriously fearsome animals such as lions.

This hippo swung its huge head to the right, then slowly back toward us—then repeated the motion several times, as if engrossed in an intense tennis rally. The park ranger accompanying us (standard procedure on any walking safari) slowly lifted his rifle, training it on the animal in case it decided to charge.

After one more lingering look our way, the hippo turned and lumbered off, away, and eventually out of sight. “Well, that was lucky,” Phiri said, smiling wryly as we collectively exhaled. “He was either heading that way, or straight at us.”

jeep safari electric

It’s not an experience I would have had on a more traditional Jeep safari, in which the metal barrier of the vehicle and the ability to make a quick escape provide some separation from wild beasts. But such spine-tingling encounters are always a distinct possibility when traversing the bush on foot.

It was here in South Luangwa—one of the world’s great wildlife sanctuaries—that the British conservationist Norman Carr first led walking safaris for tourists in the 1950s. A largely under-the-radar experience for many years, they’re becoming more popular as intrepid safari-goers seeking a culturally connected and environmentally sensitive experience opt to leave the Jeep behind. Dedicated walking safaris are still a niche sector offered by only a handful of operators, and like all high-quality safaris, they can be pricey, starting at around $1,000 a day per person during high season.

“We’ve certainly seen an uptick since COVID—I think it’s part of a general movement toward a greater immersion in nature after a couple years of lockdown,” says John Coppinger, a former guide and owner of Remote Africa Safaris , which runs five camps—three of them walking-only—across South Luangwa and North Luangwa National Parks. “There’s no sound of the engine, no smell of diesel—you really become part of it all,” Coppinger continues. “You’re not only up close and personal with the big game, but you see so many of the little things that you never pick up in a vehicle.”

Indeed, ambling single file (a safety precaution) along trails forged by elephants and hippos over countless generations offers a sensorial smorgasbord and a way to explore these ancient landscapes in step with the local people who know them best.

Ambling along trails forged by elephants and hippos over countless generations offers a sensorial smorgasbord.

During a walking safari through Kenya’s 58,000-acre Loisaba Conservancy —its shimmering green-gold hills studded with kopjes (red-rock outcroppings)—our guide, Bashir Ali, showed us wild basil, used locally as an insect repellent, and the “toothbrush tree” ( euclea divinorum, in Latin) a handy helper in the bush. This botanical lesson was on a recent visit to Loisaba Lodo Springs , the newest addition to the Elewana Collection , which operates 15 camps and lodges across Kenya and Tanzania. Ali was gleeful when I spotted a leopard tortoise—a member of the “Little Five” (which also includes the ant lion, elephant shrew, red-billed buffalo weaver, and rhino beetle). Africa’s smaller species, it turns out, can be as thrilling as the iconic “Big Five” (leopard, lion, elephant, rhino, and buffalo).

If getting out of the Jeep seems daunting, it’s worth remembering that humans have walked these paths for millennia. “In Kenya, Maasai and Samburu tribesmen have grown up looking after their fathers’ cows with little more than a rungu —a throwing club—a walking stick, and a sword,” explains Sacha Toronyi, Elewana’s guide trainer, who has led walking safaris for 30 years. “They learn to coexist with nature from a very young age, so by the time they become guides, they’re ahead of everyone in understanding local ecosystems and animal behavior.”

Another close call back in Zambia illustrated his point. The morning after avoiding the hippo charge, our group embarked on a four-hour sojourn to Remote Africa’s Big Lagoon Camp , surrounded by ebony forest on the Luangwa River’s west bank.

jeep safari electric

I was lost in reverie after watching three giraffes, still as statues, nibbling acacia branches in the soft morning light—when a gesture from Phiri stopped us short. Less than 10 seconds later, a sounder of warthogs—a mother and her babies—shot out from their underground den on the path ahead of us. One after another like cannonballs, they raced off, tails held high.

We looked at each other, dumbstruck. “How did you know they were coming?” I asked Phiri, who had grown up in the local Mkasanga village. “I felt the vibrations as they moved underground,” he replied casually.

Walking safaris are designed to avoid risky run-ins, but they are plenty thrilling, and can offer animal encounters otherwise unheard-of. Though a solitary buffalo is another of Africa’s most dangerous animals, a large herd of them—which can number up to a thousand in South Luangwa—is another story.

“They’re just like cattle—you can literally walk through them, and they make space for you,” explains Jennifer Coppinger-Riddin, John’s daughter and Remote Africa’s general manager. “You’re not just seeing them … but you’re smelling them, and as they move they kick up dust all around you. It’s quite immersive, and you’re right in the thick of it.”

If you’re very lucky, trekking through the bush can even bring you up close to one of the continent’s most endangered species. Remote Africa’s walking-only Mwaleshi Camp is shrouded by the remote wilderness of North Luangwa National Park, home to Zambia’s only population of wild black rhino. And in January, 21 black rhinos were relocated to the Loisaba Conservancy––where Elewana is the only accommodations provider––elevating the sprawling sanctuary to “Big Five destination” status. The monumental move marks one of Kenya’s most significant translocations to date, and the first time Loisaba has seen rhinos since poachers killed off the last of the species there 50 years ago.

For walking-safari devotees, part of the attraction is space and solitude—cherished rarities conspicuously absent at famous safari destinations like the Maasai Mara, where a wildebeest river crossing during the Great Migration will attract hundreds of Jeeps jockeying for a glimpse of the action.

“Walking along pathways created by these magnificent animals over many thousands of years … you feel truly connected to the earth,” says Elewana’s Toronyi. “It’s a whole other world out there.”
