There’s no better time of year to decorate than at Christmas time. Even before I became a decorator and lived, breathed, dreamed décor, I would “rev up” and put forth my best efforts for the holidays. Let’s just say it’s a big deal. I’ve hosted my extended family for Christmas for the past 15 years, so I have had a bit of practice. I pride myself on never creating the same display twice. Every year, even if I am working with basically the same décor elements I create something fresh and new by mixing it all up.

Whether you have a big budget or a non-existent one, I know one thing for sure. You can create magic by simply using your creativity. That’s why time spent getting inspired is so worthwhile; it’s like money in the bank. I hope this tour gives you some new ideas and inspires you to step outside your tried and true decorating.

Your surroundings should add joy to all your holiday celebrations. I hope this post motivates your own holiday decorating. Let’s begin my Farmhouse Christmas Tour.

A Christmas Tour with fabulous festive ideas from The Design Twins: Welcome to Julie's Home

As you step through the double doors, you enter a wide hallway that I like to decorate in vignettes. You can see the tree just beyond the staircase inviting guests to join us in celebrating the season.

farmhouse Style Entry with rustic details for holidays

Lots of fun farmhouse Christmas touches create a warm, rustic feel amidst the more classic details of our home. The casual farmhouse ambiance says relax and stay awhile.

Holiday Decorating: Home Tour with festive farmhouse sign with wooden trees and metal deer for creative vignette

I really have so much fun decorating this front entrance chest. My decorating began with this special farmhouse Christmas sign from Denise @deveniedesigns that is my favorite Christmas song, “Fall on Your Knees.”

Honestly, I might not be able to put this away after the holidays. I find myself singing it all the time now.

In addition, I used this rustic farmhouse galvanized oval tray and wooden trees, adding some holiday stars, and finished it off with white glitter pine cones for a bit of sparkle.

Next, evergreen/boxwood items add a pop of color and give it an organic feel. Symmetry was created adding two evergreen topiaries and two similar (but not matching) metal deer. Aren’t they cool?

Family room decorated for Christmas with traditional, modern farmhouse elements

Let’s move into the heart of the home, our family room.

A wall of glass sliding doors allows plenty of light and a beautiful year-round evergreen view of  our golf course.

This view influences my desire to bring the natural feel indoors. Therefore, I chose to decorate the family room with traditional reds, holidays evergreen, magnolia, and elements of farmhouse and rustic décor.

Fur pillows mix with bright red ones to add a punch of color against the sea of neutrality. My Pottery Barn Cable Knit Throw and Luxurious Faux Fur Throw add a cozy winter feel to this family gathering spot.

Country Cozy Cottage christmas Home Tour

Farmhouse elements mix with cozy Christmas reds, whites and evergreens to create a welcome and relaxed holiday vibe.

Rustic elements add warmth and a country cabin feel: an antler candle holder, a rustic twig nest, evergreen accents, pine cones and candles. A farmhouse mood is achieved using a reclaimed wood tray, farmhouse red-stripe cotton runner, rustic basket, and old books tied in string. Want all the details on how I put this coffee table together? I share a step-by-step tutorial to create a masterful coffee table for any season or occasion.

Rustic Farmhouse elements create a cozy Christmas feel in this holiday home tour

Pops of red and green peek out of the neutral decor to add the right touch of holiday without overwhelming the relaxed feel of this family room. Lit candles and a mix of surprising textures add finishing touches to this coffee table display.

Ready for Holiday Entertaining in this cozy Christmas Home Tour

All my choices here are meant to invite everyone to settle in and get comfortable.

Lots of pillows provide comfort, not just cute décor.

Three different throws punctuate the large, wrapping sectional, so everyone gets their own.

Since this is the main TV watching venue I’m always careful to not put anything too tall on the coffee table.

Plenty of candles are lit all around that add to the cozy, as well as aromatic atmosphere.

Holiday decorating with rustic farmhouse details add warmth to traditional family room decor with red, white and green accents

Does anyone else play the game of “furniture scramble” when the Christmas tree displaces furniture? This happened this year. I like the changes so much I might keep them. This is one area where both the chair and table had to move to make way for the tree.

In addition to their new home in the family room, I updated their look with Christmas details. Shop the look with similar items at the end of this post or click here to go to our shop.

cozy warm inviting fireplace with pillows and throw

There is nothing better when the weather gets nippy than cozying up next to a warm fireplace with your favorite book and a soft fur throw.

Confession time. This is the very first year I’ve ever decorated my master bedroom. I’m not sure why. I’m especially surprised since now I realize how easy it is.

In addition, I’m probably enjoying my master bedroom holiday décor more than any other room. When you see how easy it is, you might be motivated to do a little holiday makeover in your room too.

Country Christmas Bedroom decor with traditional farmhouse style

I began with new white bedding. The center pillow is from Pottery Barn and is the Denver Plaid. My deep red pillows in back are from Target   and are regular size pillow cases (that I propped up so they would look bigger). This festive Merry Christmas “throw” is actually a table runner from a company called Mud Pie, which I love.

Framing the four poster pencil bed is some faux garland strands of red bells and holly.

Finally, hung in front of the creamy  linen curtains is a rustic hand painted wood sign “Wishing you a merry, merry Christmas.”

farmhouse rustic country cozy bedroom look for the holidays

I swapped out my usual elegant gold tray on the bench for this reclaimed wood one to add the perfect rustic country touch. I left room on either side because my husband likes to have a place to sit to put on his socks. When my decor functions as well as looks good the result is a happy home.

holiday reds and tartan add to master bedroom Christmas makeover

My day to day neutral decor is the perfect backdrop for some pops of merry red and tartan. This farmhouse side chair gets a makeover by trading out its usual creamy throw for a gorgeous tartan throw (that doubles as a scarf or shawl) and a bright Merry Pillow from Target.

Cozy Farmhouse cottage decor added to Master Bedroom Retreat

On the bedroom side table a pair of winter doves, a faux evergreen bough and a pine Christmas candle add a soft holiday update. A red buffalo plaid pillow peaks out from below. The look is understated country charm.

master bedroom gets updated for holidays with charm

The angel wings look quite on point for Christmas, even though they stay year round. A new boxwood topiary adds a bit of holiday green to the otherwise neutral vignette.

Master bedroom decor is holiday ready with traditional reds, pillows and tartan

A Christmas tartan throw from Pottery Barn , and a cute Christmas pillow turn this normally neutral reading nook into a festive corner. The regular tray is swapped out for a country rustic basket and filled with another fringed red plaid throw. One can never have too many throws, or apparently, too much plaid.

Holiday cozy bedroom vignette with holiday mugs

This year I have a new artificial Christmas tree from King of Christmas . I’ve owned artificial trees since the 1990’s, but I’ve never had a tree of this quality. This is the “King” tree of theirs. The tree is nine feet tall, is beautifully flocked, and comes pre-lit. It’s my first flocked tree, and I always worried that the flocking would make a mess.

So far, there is no mess. I love how easy it was to incorporate my Farmhouse Christmas theme using this flocked look. It would look equally beautiful if you were going for glam or almost any theme. No wonder flocking seems to be so in right now. It’s magical.

For all the details on how I decorated this tree, including step-by-step instructions for how to make these bows head over to my post Easy Christmas Tree Decorating Tips .

If you are anything like me part of you really enjoys seeing all the creativity. When I look at other people’s homes, (whether it’s in person, on a blog, or in a magazine) I get very inspired and excited to go home and work my own magic. Another part of me gets slightly overwhelmed, even discouraged. That “grass is always greener” mentality or just a bit of insecurity can set it. I want to offer my advice in this department.

My hope is that you will take inspiration but not feel pressure from it. I’m right there with you honestly trying to take my own advice. Especially during the holidays when our to do lists seem never ending I hope my tour and the others you look at will add to your joy and excitement without adding stress.

With my blogging and Instagram responsibilities compounding my list of obligations this year I decided to focus my efforts on certain areas of my home. Before I began decorating, I decided which areas of my home to focus on and which areas to skip. You can do this too. This is a no-guilt, smart solution to holiday decorating that I highly recommend. Because my family is spending the holidays at my sister Jodie’s, I chose to do just one tree and skip my outdoor lights. I also “skipped” the entire second level of my home. This allowed me to focus my efforts better and really helped my stress level.

Limiting my task list helps me enjoy the process. When this mama is less stressed the whole family feels less stress. I know it is the same in most households. For more strategies on how to manage stress read my recent blog post devoted to this all-important topic, Avoid Holiday Stress: 5 Strategies .

Being proactive in managing potential stress is a great way to have more time, energy, and joy during the holidays. So, pick and choose your priorities, my friends, and enjoy. After all, this time of year should be focused on traditions, family, and celebrating the birth of Our Savior.

From Jodie and me, we wish you a blessed, peaceful and joyous holiday season.

With love and gratitude,

Thank you for sharing good ideas and “ho to’s” without overdoing the personal “this is what I ate for breakfast” minutia that too many bloggers put into their posts. Your post was practical and inspirational. I especially appreciate the gentle reminder to seek balance and be fine with it when your life is too busy to decorate every inch of your home. I’m also glad to see that you felt it was important to share the true reason for celebrating Christmas, the birth of our Savior. It’s easy to fall into the commercial trappings of the holiday and feel compelled to “do it all” and keep up with what we see on our screens. Christmas can be beautifully celebrated while still focusing on the true reason for the season. I will look forward to your future posts!

We are so glad you enjoyed this blog post. It makes us so happy to hear you connecting with our content. Well said my friend. So excited to see you on the blog in the future!

Timeless Traditional Christmas Home Tour – Rockwall Holiday Home Tour

I’m so excited to share another Christmas home tour with you. This is Stephanie of @BloomingIvyLane’s home. We shared this gorgeous home earlier this year and are thrilled to share it spruced up for Christmas. Stephanie’s holiday decor is unconventional and natured inspired. Here we saw design ideas we’ve never seen before and we look at homes for a living so that’s saying something!

FRONT PORCH

When I walked up to Stephanie’s home and saw this stunning arrangement over the front door I knew we were in for a treat this year. Stephanie mixed dried hydrangeas, evergreen and hops. She said she was inspired to do this from a storefront in New York. I love that she finds inspiration in unconventional places. There is a cute vintage Santa greeting you at the door.

LIVING ROOM

You walk from the entry into the coziest living room. The finishes elevate the room and add character to this new build home. Stephanie has an evergreen garland on the fireplace with dried hydrangeas layered in. You’ll see this is a theme in her decor this year.

Stephanie also has a garland draped in front of her hutch here. Both the placement of the art and garland are creative but still timeless. That’s what I love most about Stephanie’s design.

Her Christmas tree is filled to the brim with colorful ornaments. We toured her old home and the tree is decorated very similarly. It’s fun to see a new home with the same decor and how fresh it can feel.

HEARTH ROOM

This hops garland in this sweet sitting area in the kitchen was a tour favorite. I’ve never seen a garland like this for Christmas! It travels from the floor across the mantle and all the way up to the ceiling. This double sided fireplace was the perfect place to do this. She kept is classic on one side and did something really creative on the other.

BUTLER PANTRY

More evergreen and dried oranges adorn the shelves in the butlers pantry. Then classic touches of evergreen in the mudroom. This is one of my favorite parts of Stephanie’s home.

PRIMARY BEDROOM

Here you’ll see a garland draped on a giant mirror making a statement and reflecting the other side of this stunning room. If you don’t know how to decorate for the season just throw a garland on it and you’re good to go!

house tour christmas

This room is so sweet everyday but feels extra cozy for Christmas. I love the mix of patterns and colors is such a traditional way. Also, the Christmas trees in the shower are so fun!

house tour christmas

Last but not least the upstairs. Stephanie has designed this cozy sitting area at the top of the stairs that is the dreamiest spot to drink coffee. I love the pattern in the wallpaper against the pattern of the chairs.

Her boys rooms are also perfectly decorated for the season. I love that every room has a tree with it’s own unique flair.

house tour christmas

I hope you enjoyed Stephanie’s home as much as we did. If you’d like to see Stephanie’s home without the seasonal touches you can head here for more photos and a full video tour . If you’d like to see Stephanie’s mom’s home you can head here ! It’s also beautiful and so timeless. They both have an eye for design.

Home Bunch - Interior Design Ideas

Happy December, my wonderful friends! I couldn’t start the month in a better way than sharing a beautiful Christmas House Tour with you, and for that I am really excited to have Jordyn of @ourpnw_home on the blog again. This time around, her home is fully decorated for what I think is the best time of the year!

Here, she explains more about how she decorates her home for Christmas and what this season means to her and her growing family:

“Christmas at the Smiths has always been a special event, and this year it is extra special. As we welcome you to our home this Christmas season, I hope you find yourself inspired, and know how honored we are to have been asked to have our home part of the Home Bunch Christmas Feature series!”

See Jordyn’s Full House Tour on Home Bunch :

 – Modern Farmhouse Interiors with Subtle Fall Decor .

Christmas House Tour

“Living in the PNW (Pacific Northwest) it can become quite a dreary time of the year, but thankfully for Christmas time, we can light it up, not only on the inside but also outdoors! Starting the first of November, you can find my husband outside hanging Christmas lights on every tree, and roof line he can reach, and find myself Jordyn, inside tinkering on her Christmas plans. We’ve always loved lights, we used to be THAT house that had the 40,000 Christmas lights strung, and hundreds of cars lined up waiting to watch the show. Those years were so fun, and most definitely something we will be known for (well mainly my husband). Then more kids came, we moved to a new home, and are finding joy other ways with our new young family, and within our new home.”

Exterior Paint Color: Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze .

Front Porch

I fell in love with Jordyn’s home the moment I saw her front door! I absolutely love everything about it and how she enhances its beauty with seasonal decor.

Meet the Homeowner

It’s such a pleasure to have Jordyn on the blog again. Besides being a busy mom of 3, she really knows how to decorate her dream home like a pro! 🙂

Oh, Oh, Oh, Christmas Tree!

“Come Christmas morning, you will find this mama not so patiently waiting by the tree for her little ones to awake, so she doesn’t miss the excitement on their faces when they see that Santa has come. This is my JOY. Put aside all the décor, the over the top amounts of wreaths strung through the home, what is worth it all, is my family. I hope more than anything in the world, is that they remember how great their Christmases were together as a family, and the memories we made along the way.”

Merry Christmas!

“A day spent together, opening presents, jamming out to Christmas music, and dancing around together is the best day for this family. A day we look forward to all year long. We soak up this day as much as we can, sometimes not opening all presents at once, and enjoy the gifting all through the day. Matching Christmas jammies for the whole crew, and mama bear slippers are some of the special components that we do to bring as much fun as we can to this day. We don’t forget about the eggnog either, yum! Christmas day truly is the most joyful day of the year, and we hope this year brings so much joy to your family as well.”

I want to thank the homeowner for sharing all of the details above. Make sure to follow Jordyn on Instagram to continue seeing her home!

Above the bench, three faux wreaths decorated with velvet bows add that perfect finishing touch. Loving the simplicity of this space this year.

house tour christmas

Happy Thanksgiving, Friends! I hope your day is filled with the people you love, turkey, and more things to be thankful for than you can count. As I’m getting ready for the 2023 Christmas Tour on Monday, Nov 27th, I thought you might like to see last year’s home tour. There are lots of ideas and inspiration to use for your Christmas home. Remember to stop back on Monday! Here is a little hint of what to expect this year…

house tour christmas

Enjoy last year’s tour!

Welcome to the 2022 StoneGable, Merry And Bright Christmas Home Tour! I’m so glad you are here!

I’m part of the Blogger’s Best Home Tours hosted by Kelly at The Tattered Pew . Kelly has worked tirelessly to put together this Christmas tour of 35+ bloggers’ Holiday homes going on all week long! Today you can visit 7 homes!

If you are coming from Cecilia’s at My Thrift Store Addiction … WELCOME! I’m sure you loved her Christmas home and the way she incorporated beautiful and thrifty items into her decor!

I’m so excited for you to look around our Christmas home and I hope when you leave you will have lots of ideas to use in your home this Holiday season!

A ffiliate links included. See our  Discloser Policy . As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

Come on in the front door!

I think a wreath is a happy and hospitable way to welcome anyone who comes to our front door!

Most of the Christmas decor are things I already have. I like to challenge myself to use them in new and interesting ways.

But the wreath… it’s new! Cedar is a very popular green this year, and I am certainly on the cedar bandwagon! I opted not to use a bow on this wreath because it is gathered up at the top with twine. It’s a pretty and casual modern look.

house tour christmas

This wreath is huge! So it can easily be seen from the road!

Come on into the foyer!

house tour christmas

The heart of our foyer is this long white console table. And I packed it full of Christmas decor this year.

I’m not much of a collector but one thing I just can’t pass up are little trees! The console table holds some of my favorites plus a couple new additions.

You will see lots of little trees scattered throughout our Christmas home.

What do you collect?

One of the questions I get asked every year is how to decorate with what we collect. So this year I wrote a helpful post, DECORATING WITH CHRISTMAS COLLECTIONS . And it has been one of my popular posts so far this year.

In the post, you can see the big difference in how I decorated last year compared to this year.

house tour christmas

Did you notice the white and silver reindeer art? I love reindeer. They are adorable! But this reindeer is so majestic I decided to prop him up in the foyer to greet you!

house tour christmas

This year I took pictures with lots of lit candles! I took the photos over a three-day period and the last day was so dark and rainy. So I lit some of the candles and enjoyed the ambiance as I took pictures.

On the bottom shelf of the console, you will get a little clue about a color that plays a big part in our Christmas Home this year!

house tour christmas

If you love a Christmas home that looks cohesive and has a designer flair then the most important thing you can do is choose a Christmas color palette!

I’ve wanted to use red in my Christmas home for several years but I seemed to default to greens and neutrals which I love.

I decided early that this was the year to add red! A color palette helped me to keep on track. This year’s colors were inspired by last year’s CHRISTMAS MASTER BEDROOM .

I wanted to use the same colors plus a touch of red.

Here is my Christmas color palette this year…

house tour christmas

A color palette makes decorating so much easier. You can see a very helpful post, HOW TO CHOOSE A PERFECT CHRISTMAS COLOR PALETTE here .

I think knowing our color palette and the style and feel we want our Christmas homes to radiate gives us a huge head start and makes decorating so much easier and enjoyable.

Let’s walk down our long foyer and head toward the living room.

house tour christmas

Let’s take a quick pause by the stairs.

house tour christmas

The stairs look a whole lot different than they did last Christmas! This past summer we painted them and added a runner.

They were originally golden oak. Lots and lots of golden oak! Two stories worth of stairs!

The trouble with painting golden oak is the strong and noticeable grain in the wood. My husband and son worked together and found a quite easy fix for making the wood look much smoother! And they used a sprayer to paint the spindles. It was a big project but so worth it!

I’ll share how we transformed our stairs after the first of the year.

Garland on the stairs would be overkill so I opted for greens, ribbons, and vintage-looking Christmas balls.

I also used my favorite battery-operated candles on every other stair. They look so pretty in the evening!

THE LIVING ROOM

house tour christmas

THE WHITE BUFFET

The white buffet is the first thing you notice in the living room. And the little upholstered stools too.

I found them earlier this fall and could not resist! I put one on either side of the buffet. I’m a big fan of symmetry! You can see these well-made stools HERE . They come in several colors.

On top of each stool, I added buffalo check pillows and little frosted wreaths (see them HERE ). The wreaths also hang in every window in our home.

I added a bit of red to this end of the living room with the red plaid gifts. I like this wrapping paper because the pattern looks light and airy for a plaid.

house tour christmas

On top of the present is my favorite Christmas bow. Here is a post about CHRISTMAS RIBBONS AND BOWS with a little video about how to make these fluffy bows.

On the buffet are a few more Christmas trees from my collection.

house tour christmas

Some of my trees, like the little one above, are decades old.

In the center of the buffet, I put together an easy arrangement in a hammered brass bowl.

house tour christmas

Arrangements and vignettes are the backbone of my Holiday decor. They are easy to make and can be styled in so many ways!

HOW TO CREATE A HOLIDAY VIGNETTE STEP-BY-STEP will give you lots of ideas for making pretty Christmas arrangements too. And a peek at our Christmas sunroom.

The mantel this year has an asymmetrical garland.

house tour christmas

The lit garland was hung using four 3M hooks. Lots of bits and pieces of greens were added to this garland to make it look lush.

I repeated the crisp brown and white ribbon that is also on the tree and on the newel post of the stairs.

I cut the ribbon about 5 feet long to keep making the loops manageable. And then I cut the ends of the ribbon into a classic French V’s.

On a last-minute whim, I added red wooden beads to the garland too!

house tour christmas

I hung tree stockings at the short garland end of the mantel along with a few vintage Christmas ornaments.

Can you tell which stockings is mine?

house tour christmas

I kept the brown and white pillow on the spindle chair from the fall. I love these pretty little pillows and they worked with my Christmas color palette.

house tour christmas

THE COFFEE TABLE

In the middle-ish of the living room is the upholstered coffee table. This year I used a pretty glass mirror as a tray and added some of the smaller trees I collect that light up.

house tour christmas

And I added a bit of seeded eucalyptus.

house tour christmas

Seeded eucalyptus is much airier and lighter than greens. It lets the reflective beauty and light of the mirror show through.

house tour christmas

THE CURLACUE CHEST

The Curlacue chest holds a white porcelain Holy Family.

house tour christmas

Behind the little Nativity, I propped a light silhouette picture of Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and the star.

house tour christmas

THE CHRISTMAS TREE

This year, like last year, I used our heavily flocked Christmas tree.

house tour christmas

I decorated it with mostly white, brown, bronze, and neutral ornaments and ribbons. And I used just a little bit of red too!

house tour christmas

I like a tree that is full of things to look at! Ornaments, ribbons, ornaments, berries, and big stems of something pretty!

This is the first year I used a tree collar. It was white so I spray painted it an antique bronze to work with my colors. I’m now a fan! What do you think? Do you like a tree collar or skirt?

house tour christmas

I started to wrap some of our gifts to coordinate with our Christmas tree!

house tour christmas

Our six little grandchildren (6 and under) could not stop touching the tree! They especially LOVED jingling the jingle bells. And that made it snow all over the floor and they loved that too! And so did I!

house tour christmas

I saw the wonder and magic of a Christmas tree through their eyes! Christmas is just so special with grandkids!

Now let’s head to the dining area…

THE DINING AREA

The dining area is on the backside of the Christmas tree! So when we are eating we can see the entire tree from the other side!

house tour christmas

I got a new rug for this area. It came yesterday. I took advantage of the early Black Friday sales. I always get indoor/outdoor type rugs in our dining room. They are so much easier to clean up. You can see the new rug HERE .

This Christmas season I kept the decor rather simple.

house tour christmas

But simple can be so pretty! I put greens down the center of our table and looped the same brown and white ribbon through them.

house tour christmas

And then I added this beautiful Capiz leaf garland (see it HERE on sale now).

house tour christmas

A shallow-footed bowl in the center of the table holds seven, ruby red pomegranates.

house tour christmas

Well, friends, I have so much more to share with you like our Christmas kitchen…

house tour christmas

And our sunroom…

house tour christmas

And a couple bedrooms and more!

So stop back next Monday to see part 2 of our 2022 Merry And Bright Christmas Home Tour.

Just beautiful as always! I really love the brown and white ribbon throughout your displays. But I must say, my favorite were the arrangements on your stair posts. Love the sheer and striped ribbon together! So pretty! They deserve a diy post just by themselves. Wishing you a peaceful Christmas and good health. Thank you for all your hard work and sharing it with us!!

Hi Diana, thank you! Right now I have a horrid cold from the grandbabies, so I need a bit of good health! Merry Christmas!

I love your wreath at the front dorr. Did you create it by yourself?

And of course I love your whole decor in the house, too. : – )

Beautiful, as usual. How fortunate that Hobbes allows you to decorate the mantle- my Annie would bring it down faster than I could put it up.

Thanks, Emily! Merry Christmas.

I just love, love following your blog and all the creative ideas, how to and recipes you share. Your Christmas home tour is gorgeous and I have garnered many ideas. Would you please share how you attached the beautiful greens together, or did you use a teardrop swag on your newel post. My stair banister certainly would be an overkill but the greens would be perfect. I certainly could use any tips you would share. Thank you and Merry Christmas!

I used a small cedar garland and folded it in half. I tied it to the bow and then tied the garland to the newel post. I hope this helps. So glad you enjoyed the tour. Merry Christmas, Beverly!

Amazing!!! I love the white and silver deer art on your foyer table. Is that something that is still available?

Hi Cassie, Merry Christmas! The deer art is from a local shop.

Yvonne, everything beautifully elegant as always. In love with the white and silver reindeer art and would love the link to purchase. Have a great holiday season. Helen

Hi Helen, that reindeer is very popular! I found it at a local shop and I don’t have a source. Sorry.

I love your blog and forward to reading each week. Where did you get the baskets on the bottom of your console table and on the Carolina Room near the tree??? Also love the brown color lumbar like Fall pillow, where did you find that one?? So appreciate the links in the Christmas ? articles.

I found it locally, Sorry Sabrina. The lumbar pillows were from Amazon and are not in stock. Things right now are flying off the shelves. So sorry.

Yvonne, your home looks beautiful for the holiday season.

Hi Yvonne! I love your pops of red and your tree is stunning–pinned! You’ve created such a welcoming, festive entry. Wishing you a joyous Christmas season. Blessings, Cecilia @My Thrift Store Addiction

Cecilia, So sweet! Merry Christmas

I just love your elegant Christmas decor ! Where did you get that beautiful round wicker tray under your coffe table I have the same kind of ottoman and was looking for something exactly like that and also what size is it .

I found the basket tray at Wayfair. However, I don’t see it there anymore. Look on Wayfair, they have others you might like, Debbie.

Yvonne, your Christmas decor this year is spot on! It is so perfect, you have inspired me to use red next year.Bless you for sharing your beautiful decor with your followers. Have a wonderful Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

How sweet, Susan! I was surprised at how much I love red in our home.

Really beautiful! Love the color scheme and the nativity vignette is perfection!

Your home is so lovely. Such gorgeous details. So fun hopping with you this week. I adore your mantle decor.

Thank you, Renae.

Your home looks so cozy and inviting for the holidays, Yvonne. I love every detail. Christmas perfection! Happy to be hopping with you this week. Pinned!

Thanks, Jen! Merry Christmas.

Yvonne! Your home is definitely Merry and Bright! You have been blessed with the gift of decorating and curating a beautiful home and it blesses so many besides just your family! Thank you for sharing your home with us and the special touches and memories. I could just hear your grandkids laughing touching the tree and bells! Merry Christmas my friend and thanks for joining the tour!

Oh, Kelly! How sweet! I’m so thrilled to be part of your tour! Beautiful homes, beautiful women.

It’s all beautiful! I especially love the deer picture in your foyer. Like you, I’m not a collector but I do collect trees and deer for my Christmas vignettes. I use those little battery operated mini lights too. They are set to come on a 4:00 and off at 10:00. They lend that magical touch. My colour palette is mostly white with touches of gold and very small additions of red. Looking forward to the rest of your home tour.

Sounds so beautiful!

Beautiful as always!!!

Thank you, Andrea! I loved sharing our home with you!

Loved your tour! It’s always gorgeous!! Thanks so much for all the ideas!

Can you tell me where you found the framed quote “The Lord bless you and keep you”.

Here you go Kay: https://rstyle.me/+asiVZJz4zFnvERel1fh6dg

SOOOOO clean, light, bright and merry – Love everything Yvonne!! Would you mind sharing the source for the beautiful white footed bowl which is holding the pomegranates? LOVE it! Christmas blessings!

Yvonne, your home looks Christmas Beautiful! I love everything about it. I can’t wait to see your post in January about your stair redo. Merry Christmas!

Absolutely gorgeous!!!!

Wow! Your home looks gorgeous for the holiday season. Everything is so elegant and pretty! Love that tree! Pinned.

Thanks, AnnMarie

Your home looks beautiful for the holiday season!

Thanks Kim! Merry Christmas.

Okay… next year, for sure, I want to come at Christmas time! Tanglewood looks amazing, as always. I have to agree, the last minute decision to use the red beads on the mantel was a GREAT idea! And I thought I had a lot of ornaments on my tree! I have to go get my bins out of storage to fill all the ‘holes’ in my tree now! 😉 Can’t wait to see the kitchen and the sunroom… and the bedrooms, as well! LOVE those prints at the end of the counter! Love you, and always love working with you!

Yes, come at Christmastime next year! Lancaster has so much to do!

Merry and bright indeed Yvonne! The red is a big hit this year and I think you found the perfect balance. Everything is lovely and inviting as always. I love the mirror that you used as a tray on the ottoman. I want to try something like that on our round ottoman. Thank you for the inspiration! Happy Christmas!

Thank you Michelle! Merry Christmas!

Very beautiful and unique this yezr.. Some great deas gleamed. Thank you. I did try the link “Making A Bow” for wreath making but got a 404 error..page no longer exists. Hope you can fix that. Thank you

Sorry about that Susan, here you go: https://www.stonegableblog.com/christmas-ribbon-and-bows/

Stunning simplicity. Cozy yet elegant. Perfection! Thanks for sharing ?. I’m in love with the sunroom rug. Did you have it in your other home – do you have a source for it?

Hi! I love that added some color in your rooms. It really refresh’s the decor. Thanks for the tour. I’ll be back to view more?

I think so too! I’m just thinking about what color I can use for winter.

I loved the tour! Where did you find the three Santa-reindeer prints hanging on the wall at the end of your counter?

Hi Cheryl, they are a digital image that I had printed. See them here: https://rstyle.me/+KF99q9LEvHaISec3m95k6w

Beautiful tour, Yvonne! Love how your tree sits between the living and dining area so you can enjoy it all around.

Thanks, Lora. The tree can be seen from almost all of our downstairs rooms.

I love your touch of red throughout and the way you looped the ribbon in your garland! All beautiful!

I noticed you don’t show that beautiful mango bookshelf from this past spring or summer. I am in love with that. Would you be willing to share where you purchased it? I live about an hour away from your area and would love to drive down to the store and shop.

Hi Linda, I loved that bookshelf too. But it was really too big for the foyer so I gave it to a sweet young family. I found it at The Treasure Place in Intercourse. Hope this helps.

Wow Yvonne! Your home looks so beautiful! I adore that mirror! It’s incredible! Merry Christmas!!!

Merry Christmas, Stacy!

Yvonne, Your home looks lovely this Christmas season!! The plaid pillows and touches of red are just the right touch of elegance and added interest. Lovely!!! Thanks for sharing. Can’t wait to see the bedrooms! How do you keep your cat from creating mayhem with your Christmas tree? I heard cats are famous /infamous for climbing into trees. Nancee

Our cat, for some strange reason, has never touched the tree. Fingers crossed that he won’t this year.

I can’t tell you how much you inspire me with your home tours, Yvonne. Every detail is so beautiful from the little trees displayed throughout your gorgeous house to the bowl of pomegranates on the table. I am amazed by your talent when it comes to holiday ribbons. Both your Christmas tree and mantel are just stunning. Happy holidays!

You are just the sweetest, Kim! I feel the same way when I come to visit your home too! Merry Christmas!

You always so do Christmas so beautifully! I love all the pretty touches (especially that reindeer), Merry Christmas to you and your family. xx

Your holiday home is absolutely stunning, Yvonne! I love how elegant, yet cozy and inviting your home is! Your creativity and talent is such an inspiration. I am so happy to be touring with you. Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas!

I’ve always looked forward to your Christmas tours every year, and this one is just as stunning as ever, Yvonne! I LOVE your small touches of red this year. And I’m pinning that mantel garland for sure. It’s gorgeous. Have a very Merry Christmas!!

Merry Christmas, Kate!

Hi Yvonne, I just was curious how you fit the tree in a “ collar “. Would that work with a real tree? It looks like a big planter. Looks lovely! Marianne

Hi Marianne, what a great question. The tree color comes in four parts. They click together with a magnet. You would have to know the measurements of your tree stand and then make sure it fits a collar. This is the first year we used a tree collar and won’t go back! Merry Christmas, Marianne.

Lovely house. So warm and inviting. May I ask where you bought the buffet? Thanks.

Hi Carol, I found it at Wayfair. Sorry, they don’t carry it any longer.

Yvonne, your home is beautifully decorated for the holiday season! Where did you get the silhouette in the frame behind the holy family. I love the idea! Merry Christmas!!

Hi Leslie, I found it here: https://rstyle.me/+jK-zgkNyH3UaY7J3wHhdYg

Your home is so lively, warm and inviting. I love all the white! Hoping you feel better soon so your holiday season is magical. Merry Christmas.

Thanks, Cindy!

Hello, I don’t leave replies often, but I had to reply this time. Your home is absolutely beautiful in all its Christmas decor! You did an amazingly festive job! Love it! Your tree is exquisite, and I like the idea that you used it again this year. All rooms shown are beautiful, and I am looking forward to viewing part two. Merry Christmas!

Thanks so much, Sandi. Merry Christmas.

Yvonne, I have been admiring your beautiful flocked tree for years. We decided to invest in fake tree this year and I’m wondering where you got yours. Would you mind passing on that to me?

Hi Cindy, We love our tree. It’s on the slim side and fits nicely in our living room. Here is is: https://rstyle.me/+8G6EEAomLrRLD18-5Scouw

Wow! There’s so much to love! I am definitely taking some ideas with me: The simple White Mary, Joseph and Jesus figurines with the picture of Bethlehem in the background, and just the perfect votives on each side to give it importance; the white bowl in the kitchen with pomegranates; your kitchen curtains, the understated beauty of your decorating. It’s all so beautiful! Thank you for the tour. I loved it very much.

Sweet Mary, thank you so much! Merry Christmas.

Stunning home tour, I love your style, everything about your decor speaks to my love of classic design.xx

Thank you so much, Janette! Merry Christmas.

Thank you for sharing your Beautiful home! You are so blessed with talent, I’m always in awe.

Merry Christmas. Rose.

Love the white reindeer print sitting on the chest in the foyer. Where did you get it? Do you know if it is still available? Everything is beautiful!

Thank you! I found the Reindeer locally. Sorry, I don’t have a source.

2023 Christmas Home Tour

Our annual Christmas Home Tour day starts… NOW! Every year, I consider splitting up our efforts across individual blog posts but as always, when it comes down to it, I ultimately decide to include ALL of it in one lump home tour. So, welcome! And thank you for stopping by for a visit.

*Posts on KelleyNan.com may contain affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Click  HERE  for full disclosure.

Before we go anywhere or do anything, I want to preface this year’s post with a caveat or two 😉 If you’ve been around this year, you know how focused I’ve been on simplification and minimization. We’ve succeeded in some areas and still have lots of areas I’d like to improve but even the idea of the Christmas season was a major catalyst in wanting change. The storage, the schedules, the things . So, I wasn’t particularly stoked to start the season because honestly, I didn’t want to see it.

Here’s a few changes/shifts I chose to implement ahead of the season to honor my commitment to simplifying…

  • No new holiday decor. I have so much in storage — some I use every year, some I rotate and end up using every few years, some embellishments I’ve never used. There’s honestly not THAT much I don’t ever use but it’s still a lot of “inventory” to manage. I plan to thin out my arsenal and before I do that, I didn’t want to bring another thing into this house when I have plenty. There’s a fine line since I love fresh things and part of my job is to bring ideas, but in a personal capacity, I put my foot down. So… how’d I do? Pretty good. I’ll elaborate as we go through the post.
  • Bring out fewer trees. For the first time, we don’t have a tree in the dining room! I did add one back into the bedroom since we missed that last year but aside from that, we have our main living room tree, nostalgic family tree, and Eliza’s tree which we just pull into her room from the playroom. We’ve literally had years with 7-8 trees so the current number we have is maaah-velous .
  • Display less. Instead of bringing out bins and trying to decide where everything should go, I looked around and tried to decide what areas I wanted to add holiday decor to . There is literally not a thing in the kitchen this year.
  • Decorate early. Which we do each year (starting at the beginning of October).
  • Fewer gifts. No buying just to buy to fulfill some sort of imaginary quota/visual. Both mine and Dave’s gifts are experience gifts this year, too, and I’m gifting my mom an experience again.

I’m certain there’s more that slipped in there, but those distinct focuses have already made a difference this season. So, now that I’m rambled about what this year’s Christmas tour is not , let’s talk about what it is .

It’s breathable. It’s only the favorites. It’s repurposing. It’s classic over trends. It’s reinvention within the constraints of working with what I have. It’s less stress and obsession over the details. In this season of life, it’s more enjoyable. It’s a celebration of finally making some seasonal updates after remaining unchanged for the majority of the past year.

So, let’s head in to a “lighter” but complete 2023 KN Christmas home…

*Available sources can be found below photos throughout the post.

BTW — the outside of our house usually isn’t complete until after the annual home tour launch, so here’s a look back when we finished our exterior last year.

Christmas Wreaths On Windows with Red Bows and Lights

There was no need to change out this big vase of magnolia stems in the entry, so I didn’t. (These are the kinds of simple decisions I’ve made this year that have been liberating). I invested in a bunch of the stems over the past few years, adding them to my collection gradually, and I’m so glad since originally intended for the cooler months, I now pretty much keep them on permanent display.

I love a natural/rustic moment, mixed with a little glitz. Sprinkling jingle bells anywhere is always a good idea 😉

Like I mentioned, it’s the first year we haven’t had one (or two!) trees in the dining room. I miss it a little but simplifying in here was a major win.

Since we didn’t do a tree, I went a little more elaborate on the sideboard than I usually do, and embellished a strand of garland, nestling in our little modern concrete village collection.

Modern Christmas Village

For the centerpiece, I wanted something low and something that wouldn’t compete with/detract from the sideboard. I mixed gold ornaments and the Amazon pears I added rub n’ buff to a few years ago.

I used faux berries I had in storage that coordinated with our tree theme this year and mixed in the regular greenery go-tos — faux cedar and live magnolia leaves. I love using live eucalyptus too, but time constraints didn’t allow for it without stress so it was an easy omission.

2023 Christmas Home Decorating Ideas with Green Trees and Colorful Decor

In the areas we use a lot and do a lot of living in daily, I kept things to a minimum so as not to create a bunch of stuff we’d be having to move to eat, prepare, work, etc.

I’ve never met a bowl of balls I didn’t love and to me, it’s the easiest way to carry your Christmas colors into adjoining spaces. Just save a few from your tree to use in an arrangement(s).

If you’re working within space constraints or just don’t want to allocate a ton of surface space to something like a village, try going vertical with it. You can stagger your dwellings front to back and add books/boxes for elevation. Think more Santorini, less Main Street 😉

And for this year’s Christmas color scheme/creation…

Here it is! I was originally going to go with red, green, and gold but I’d been holding onto that thick blue ribbon for the past several years, so I decided to morph the scheme into something a little more unexpected.

THIS velvety ivory and gold ribbon was another new purchase I hadn’t anticipated, but I was satisfied using all ornaments and picks from my arsenal. The ribbon shop carries a lot more pretty, wired ribbons — and additional colors with the gold backing, like mine, HERE .

I also pulled out copper/brown ornaments I last used over 10 years ago and never thought I’d be brining them out again! Well… here we are! By the way, if you’re wanting to incorporate some of that brown/coppery color on a budget, Target still has THIS pretty tinsel-finish set and it’s 30% off right now (making it $10.50/set of 9!) When I last looked, the viral flocked ornament set in brownish tones (also 30% off, making it $7!) was out of stock but I know it’s been coming and going. The other sets ( HERE ) that are still in stock have some GORGEOUS color combos!

While the tree has some bold colors, I didn’t want that to take over the living room, so I focused on the copper/natural tones and stuck with linen pillow covers instead of anything too heavy. Again, I had it all on hand. I’ve kept my pillow organization under control all year (remember THIS project ?) which made sourcing them so much easier and less daunting.

Using my regular garland strand (the Costco strand is still my Number 1!), I spent time embellishing the mantel. It’s one of my favorite places to decorate since it’s so finite 😉 You can find a full tutorial on my approach to mantel garland HERE .

Side note — I already had our chimney cleaned for the season but we have to replace the inside walls (scheduled for next week). I’ll be excited when it’s a little bit cooler and officially fire season. And, if you want to save it for later, you can find a regular home maintenance list HERE .

I purchased my green velvet pillows years ago from West Elm, but I found some dead ringers on Amazon for a steal HERE . They come in a bunch of colors and sizes and in a set (the 20″ set of two, for example, is currently $16.99!).

I adore our growing collection of family Christmas cards. This year’s card is already framed and on display 😉

That little lit tree in the basket was another minor unexpected, impromptu decor purchase since I stumbled upon it at the Outlet, but it’s the *perfect* size. You can find it online in three sizes HERE .

Incorporating just a few things and leaving most of the built-in bookshelf decor as is (with minor adjustments) is a huge time saver.

As a side note, in the photo below, the terracotta vase on the bottom shelf on the right is so much prettier in person. It’s also a surprisingly good deal, coming from PB. You can find it in a few sizes HERE .

I love that our tree is all maximalist but as a whole, I feel like I can still breathe easily in our living room. There’s fewer pillows on the sofas, I barely adjusted the coffee table decor, and it’s so easy to “reset” at the end of each day.

The conversation room continues to hold our most special (and most fun to look at!) things. With all the visual stimulation from the variety of ornaments, I simplified the surrounding decor in this room this year.

I was happy to use more ribbon I’ve had for years, still brand new. And, I love the thin ribbon on the nostalgia tree. BTW — you can find tips on decorating a family tree HERE .

I gifted myself with THIS glass and glitter book stack ornament from Anthro — so pretty in person and perfectly commemorates my uber bookish year.

I won’t source individual ornaments (we’d be here all day and most are no longer available) but my favorite places to find special/cute ornaments are (tap the names below for their ornament collections)…

  • Anthropologie
  • Target (some seriously cute ornaments at ridiculously low price points)
  • Pottery Barn

I don’t remember if I publicly pondered on KN or just in a KN newsletter, but I was considering a brown quilt… and I did it! I had taken a break from the Belgian Flax Linen Quilt , and honestly, nothing compares. I was so excited to get a fresh one for the first time in a few years and also — don’t hold me to it but I’m enjoying not having ALL white bedding for a bit.

Two things.

  • Last year, I decided to forego a bedroom tree and I really missed it. So, I brought in one of my flocked trees to leave bare — after it was set up, I plugged it in and it wouldn’t fully light. I took that one down — no problem, I had a second identical tree. I hauled it upstairs and set it up… it also didn’t fully light. So… enter THIS tree . I love the slender size and the downward sloping branches — it’s perfect to leave bare with no effort. Mine is the 7′ flocked pencil spruce that has been in and out of stock for weeks.
  • And then, Number 2, since I’ve been thriving in my reading era, I’ve REALLY been spending a lot of time in my bedroom reading corner. I saw THIS barrel swivel chair (upholstered) at the Outlet for a stellar price and in my mind, it matched the bedroom. In person… it does not. Even though it’s gray, it’s a REALLY cool gray and almost looks blue against my bed fabric, rug, and the rest of the bedroom. But, it’s so so comfortable to read in. So… the verdict’s out. I love the chair, I love reading in the chair, I hate how the fabric looks in my bedroom.

Last year, I was so excited for Eliza to have a purple tree in her purple bedroom. Except… she didn’t really have a purple bedroom because her bed ended up taking more than a year to get here. So, this year, we did a purple(ish) tree 2.0. She and I tag teamed the family tree downstairs and she still likes coming home to a “surprise” tree in her bedroom so we’ll see what she’s feeling next year 😉

I actually used THIS Merry & Bright print from Little Sleepies as the color inspo — I had bought Eliza the blanket for the season (not currently available) to match a set of pjs. For the first time, I used only what I already had for her tree.

We’ve been enjoying Christmas in our home since before Halloween (it’s no secret around here — the trick or treaters always get a laugh 😉 ) and before we put it all away, I am tasking myself with letting go of some back-stock still in storage. I’ll also be more fully setting up my storage system with QR codes ( HERE ) to alleviate the hunting next year.

Thank you, thank you for stopping by today for what is one of my favorite blog days of the year, each year. Here’s to a beautiful season ahead, and remembering to prioritize what makes you and your family happy.

wow, everything looks Amazing!! Lots of great ideas too.

Thank you for taking the time, Annie. I appreciate your kind note so much. I hope you have a very Merry Christmas season!

Absolutely stunning!

Thank you, Kristie, and Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Simply Spectacular and as beautiful as you! Loved it all! Holiday Blessings and Cheer ♥️💚

Once again you’ve outdone yourself! Your home looks fully decorated but not overdone! I keep telling myself I MUST stop buying but…….. One question about the blue ribbon – isn’t it dupioni silk, not velvet?

Thank you for visiting our Christmas home, Denise! The blue ribbon I used on this year’s Christmas tree is silk-like. The ivory ribbon with the gold backing is velvet. I hope you have a Merry Christmas!

Thank you so much, Darla! I know this holiday season will be especially magical for you all.

Gorgeous as always! I love that you decided to use what you already have and mix it up in new ways!! I’m challenging myself with that this year and am excited to see how I can re use and recycle! Merry merry Christmas!

Thank you, Meagan, for your sweet note. I was so determined to use what I had on hand and it worked. I know you can do it, too, and hope you have a very Merry Christmas!

It’s all very beautiful and just the right amount. You used restraint this year which is better than I did. As soon as Halloween was over, I decorated. My thought was to just add a few pieces to my existing decor but I ended up fully decorating. I did pretty much stick to my buy nothing new. Out with a friend I saw two can’t leave in the store garlands. Oh well, maybe I’ll do better next year. Oh, and Eliza’s tree is spectacular with all those pretty purple and pink balls. She must be over the moon with her pretty bedroom.

Thank you, Joanna, for taking the time to visit and for your note! Like you, I always have good intentions… Since “simplifying” has been my mantra this year, I was determined to stick to my guns. And I still say, if you see something that you absolutely must have, go for it! I hope you have a wonderful Christmas season. xoxo

Amazing! What a fun way to spend a Saturday morning. Thank you for the inspiration, my friend.

Thank you, Renae, for taking the tour of my Christmas home. I hope you and yours have a magical Christmas season!

Wowza! Just stunning once again. Well done!

Thank you so much for your kind note, Corine! I appreciate you taking the time to tour and wish you the best Christmas season.

Can you please tell me what finish the Iron Ore is in your dining room? Also, have you ever done a video showing how you decorate your main tree from start to finish? I would love to learn from your amazing skills!

Hi Robin, Thank you so much for visiting my home for Christmas. The paint finish in the dining room is eggshell. If you’re on Instagram, I have published several reels recently that demonstrate the steps I take to decorate my trees. Merry Christmas!

As usual, everything is beautiful. I absolutely love the tree in your room. It’s now on my list.

Thank you, Doris, for your sweet note and for taking the tour! I’m so happy to have that tree and love the look with just lights and no decorations. I hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

This is just beautiful, you always do an amazing job! I am loving the neutrals, the layers, and simplicity, but most of all it is just so intentional! Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas!!

Hi Christine, Thank you for taking the time to tour and for your kind and thoughtful note. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and also hope your Christmas season is magical!

So beautiful!! Thanks for the inspiration. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Thank you for your sweet note and for taking the time to visit! I hope you and yours have a very Merry Christmas!

I am truly in LOVE with your maximalist tree in the living room. It adds so much to your otherwise minimal space, it’s a beautiful balance. Seeing all of your holiday decor makes me so excited to break more of mine out! As soon as our cabinet painters are done with the kitchen reno, I’m adding in all of my kitchen decor. Thanks for the inspo, and the reminder to take things a lil slower this season!

Thank you for taking the time to tour our Christmas home, Amelia! I imagine you are having busy days since you are in the midst of your kitchen reno. I hope it is completed soon and that you have a very Merry Christmas!

I love, love, love your decorations Year after year. They’re simply stunning. One question for you, how do you store all of your accessories, ornaments, etc.?

Thank you for your kind message, Wanda! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and I will be sharing a post on this topic soon.

I recently shared our home tour in this seasonal tour with 35 bloggers. I look forward to this holiday tour each and every year.

Each year my friend Marty from A Stroll Thru Life organizes this amazing tour of homes.

This year I did our tour a bit differently. I told a story about our Christmas traditions intermingled with photos of our porch, dining room, family room, and kitchen. Be sure to follow along by signing up for my newsletter . I'll be sharing more detailed photos of those rooms throughout the holiday season.

Some share a whole home tour while others may just share one room.

Regardless, you will walk away with stories that will warm your heart and hopefully some ideas to inspire your holiday decor.

One of the things that I love most about this tour is how eclectic it is. It is not labeled farmhouse or traditional or even contemporary.

What you will find is a little something for every style.

While there were many views from each of the home tours that I love, I've selected my very favorite one here for each of the homes.

You can see much more! Right with each photo, you will see a way to continue reading. Just click that button to go to each of the homes.

Don't forget to pin your favorites so that you can easily refer back. While you are at it, PLEASE PIN THIS POST BY CLICKING HERE .

Go grab a cup of coffee, tea, or maybe a glass of wine depending on the time of day, and enjoy the tours!

Christmas gift guide to Moscow surroundings

house tour christmas

Visitors from America and Western Europe might be surprised to discover that Russia celebrates Christmas on January 7th. That’s because the Russian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar. After the end of the Soviet Union, some Russians have begun celebrating Christmas on December 25 in accordance with the Gregorian calendar. But many Russians still observe the tradition of fasting on January 6th, breaking the fast with a large feast on Christmas Eve after the first star has appeared in the sky.

During the Soviet era, Christmas and religious traditions were banned in Russia. Santa Claus was replaced by Ded Moroz, or, Grandfather Frost, an old man with a long white beard who would bring gifts to children on New Year’s instead of Christmas. According to Russian tradition, Ded Moroz is accompanied by his granddaughter, Snegurochka, the Snowmaiden, who helps him on his journey to give presents to children.

Although the tradition of having a Christmas tree, known as a yolka in Russian, was also banned during Soviet times, Russians got around this by having New Year’s trees from which they hung homemade decorations. Today, the restrictions of the Soviet Union have faded into history, and during the Christmas season visitors to Russia can even purchase Christmas ornaments in the shape of matryoshka dolls, or religious icons that depict nativity scenes.

Heading counterclockwise around the Golden Ring this holiday season, northeast of Moscow, your first stop will most likely be the city of Vladimir, home to some of Russia’s most striking churches and cathedrals. The Vladimir region is known for its fine crystal. Stop by the Crystal, Lacquer Miniatures, and Embroidery Museum ( 2 Bolshaya Moskovskaya ) for an overview of traditional crafts before visiting the gift shop in the museum to browse the crystal selection. Vladimir Chic ( 2 Dvoryanskaya ) also sells local glass and crystal work.

Typical souvenirs are also for sale in Vladimir’s old town, especially by the Golden Gate, a triumphal arch and defensive tower that is one of the last-remaining parts of the wall that once surrounded ancient Vladimir and a sure stop on any tour of the Golden Ring.

Just 63 kilometers from Vladimir lays the nearby city of Gus-Khrustalny , the ‘Crystal Goose,’ also home to a rich glass and crystal making tradition. You can visit the glassmaking factory in Gus-Khrustalny and buy gifts ranging from plates and vases to decanters, or visit the outlet store back in Moscow ( 4 Ilyinka ) just east of the Kremlin.

North of Vladimir, you’ll arrive in Suzdal, one of the Golden Ring route’s more tranquil towns. Suzdal boasts a number of small bazaars and stands outside the main tourist sites where visitors can purchase local honey mead, called medovukha, along with traditional crafts, like a pair valenki, or Russian woolen boots, which make an ideal Christmas gift for friends and family back home. The shopping stands outside Suzdal’s Museum of Wooden Architecture and Peasant Life ( Ul. Pushkarskaya ) are also highly recommended. Market Square ( Torgovaya Pl ) houses a number of shops where visitors can search for arts and crafts.

Following the Golden Ring north of Suzdal, many tours will stop in the city of Kostroma, a former trading outpost on the immense Volga River. One of the city’s highlights is the Museum of Linen and Birchbark ( 38 Tereshkova ), where visitors can view exhibits on traditional Russian crafts woven from flax and bark. A gift shop in the basement sells tablecloths, napkins, baskets, linen dolls, and traditional clothing typical of the region.

South from Kostroma, stop in the city of Rostov-Veliky for enamel jewelry, a craft which allows artists to produce small paintings on metal that are then fired to produce a thin glaze over the image. Rostov became famous for its tradition of enamel work. Today, visitors can purchase rings, earrings, bracelets, brooches, and jewelry boxes in the gift shop of the Rostov Enamel factory ( 3 Borisoglebskoye Highway ).

While you’re in Rostov, visit the House of Crafts ( 16 Vtoraya Tolstovskaya Naberezhnaya ) for local pottery and the Souvenirs shop ( 5 Ul. Kamennyi Most ) for ushanka hats—Russian fur caps with earflaps—paintings, and samovars for tea lovers.

The last two stops on a tour of the Golden Ring are the cities of Pereslavl-Zalesskiy and Sergiev Posad. Pereslavl is most famous for its embroidery work, available at the Art Salon ( 12 Ul. Sovetskaya ) along with souvenirs made of wood and stone. Nearby Sergiev Posad is considered the place where Russia’s matryoshka dolls were first invented, and was the chief production center of the dolls before Soviet times. Visit the city’s Toy Museum ( 123 Pr. Krasny Armii ) to get a better sense of the birthplace of one of Russia’s most recognizable toys, then head over to the market alongside the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius—one of the city’s most important sites—to load up on matryoshka dolls, painted eggs, and icons before going home.

If you’ll be in the Golden Ring during New Years, the city of Vladimir hosts an impressive Christmas fair, with an iceskating rink and performances by local artists, in the main square ( Sobornaya Pl ). In most other Golden Ring cities you’ll find similar events in the center square as Christmas nears.

Most shops and markets in the Golden Ring are open year round. If you’re coming to Russia for a short period of time, whether in winter or summer, consider a trip to this stunning part of the country, and bring an extra bag if you plan to go shopping for Christmas gifts.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.
